12 Best Pet Carriers to Keep Dogs and Cats Comfortable and Safe in Transit

12 Best Pet Carriers 2023 for Traveling With Furry Friends

Traveling with a pet requires sorting out a whole lot of logistics—beyond making sure your own packing list has been properly ticked off, you’ll need to factor in the food, toys, and gear your pet will need on the road and wherever you’re headed. But even before that’s been mapped out, you’ll want to find a trustworthy pet carrier. Reliable, comfortable, and sturdy pet carriers to throw over your shoulder or on your back when your hands are full make navigating the airport a more streamlined experience, and keep your pet comfortable while in transit.

Whether you’re traveling with your furry friend on a month-long vacation to another state, heading to a rental house for a week or two, or just setting out on a quick weekend getaway, these airline-approved carriers will keep your pet safe on the go. Scroll down for a dozen great pet carriers for dogs and cats, including a space-age pod that's perfect for naps and an  Arlo Skye carrier that attaches to your favorite carry-on—but first, a few tips to keep in mind while you shop and plan.

What size pet carrier will fit under an airline seat?

Size requirements vary by airline, so always double check with the one you’re flying for the latest pet guidelines before departure. Here are size and weight specifications for  JetBlue (17" x 12.5" x 8.5"),  American Airlines (18” x 11” x 11” for soft-sided bags, 19” x 13” x 9” for hard-sided kennels), and Delta and  United (both 18” x 11” x 11”). Make sure your pet has room to stand up and turn around while inside.

Does a dog carrier count as a carry-on?

Pet carriers must fit under the seat in front of you. However, they can effect your luggage allotment. On JetBlue, for fares above Blue Basic, a carry-on suitcase, backpack, or duffel is allowed so long as it fits in the overhead compartment. However, on other airlines, like American and Delta, your pet carrier replaces your carry-on bag, and your second item is limited to a personal item.

What type of carrier should I get?

It depends on what size pet you have and how you travel. A soft side carrier or backpack carrier is easiest to fit under an airplane seat, and may be more comfortable and breathable for your pet.

Think through your typical (non-pet) travel routine and how you’ll need to adjust it when your personal item is dedicated to your pet. If you often travel with another person, that person can store things you’ll want accessible during the flight in their personal item, but if you’re traveling solo, you’ll probably want to pick a carrier with additional storage for your boarding pass, earphones, and other small essentials. Backpack carriers are best for smaller dogs or cats, though all come with weight guidelines to help you determine whether it'll fit your pet.

Paravel Cabana Pet Carrier

  • Dimensions: 11"L x 20.5"W x 11"H
  • Weight maximum: 20 pounds

One of the chicest new additions to the pet carrier world is Paravel's latest ideation, which is largely inspired by their wildly popular Cabana Tote (yes, the one that’s sold out seven times). The design team has resized it to fit a pet up to 20 pounds and added comfortable elements like a washable liner and mesh panels for airflow, all while maintaining the sustainability that the brand is known for by constructing it out of 38 upcycled plastic water bottles. It folds down to be completely flat for easy storage, even if you live in a tiny Upper West Side apartment like me. But the best part? The ability to embroider your pet's name or initials on the side of the carrier. Traveling with your pet has never been more fashionable—or sustainable. — Scott Bay, associate editor

Wild One Travel Carrier

  • Dimensions: 17.5"L x 11"W x 10"H
  • Weight maximum: 16 pounds

Tested by  Traveler  contributor Lauren Dana Ellman, Wild One’s design-friendly pet carrier comes in tan, spruce green, and black, and fits dogs that are 16 pounds and under. “It’s clear this carrier was designed with versatility, durability, and functionality in mind,” Ellman wrote. "There are mesh walls for added breathability, a built-in collar clip, a detachable shoulder strap that pulls double duty as a leash, and a cushion that can be rolled out to use as a plush dog bed or travel mat when you get to your destination.” That interior mat is machine washable, too.

Away pet carrier

  • Dimensions: 18.7"L x 10.8"W x 10.75"H
  • Weight maximum: 18 pounds

It should be no surprise that Away’s pet carrier is just as streamlined and chic as their hit luggage. The bag, which fits pets up to 18 pounds and comes in standard black or an au courant gray-blue, is incredibly thoughtfully designed. Standout features include plush, removable sherpa bedding, plenty of pockets for you to store travel documents, and a side pocket with drainage holes (so you can store your included collapsible water bowl inside). Plus, wide openings on both the side and top for easy access, mesh panels on three sides for maximum ventilation, and a roll-up screen so your pet can see what's going on outside. As for safety: Innovative exterior latches can fasten the carrier to a car seat belt, and an interior safety-collar clip prevents adventurous pets from scampering out as soon as you unzip the carrier, And, of course, it’s designed to strap onto any type of Away luggage, making toting this carrier a breeze, even through a crowded terminal. — Juliet Izon

The 6 Best Airline-Approved Pet Carriers of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We tested 13 carriers on roundtrip domestic flights

The Spruce Pets / Sarah Naftzger

The Winners

How we picked, more we recommend.

We tested 13 airline-approved pet carriers on roundtrip domestic flights with both cats and dogs. After dozens of hours of combined flight time, our testers most appreciated machine washable linings, built-in trolley sleeves, lots of ventilation, and a balance between structure and flexibility that provides the most comfort for their pets. Our favorite has all of these features.

After testing on domestic flights, Away's The Pet Carrier is our favorite airline-ready pet carrier . It's not only attractive but fully featured, with multiple points of entry, a trolley sleeve, lots of ventilation, a waterproof lining, and a machine washable bed. Plus, it's crash test certified. For a more affordable option , check out the Petsfit Expandable Pet Carrier instead. It's got lots of ventilation, and zip-out accordion sections that let you make the carrier a lot bigger—and more comfortable for your cat or dog—when you're not walking around with it.

We also identified four more airline-approved pet carriers that we think are worth your consideration:

  • Best for Small Dogs: Wild One Travel Carrier
  • Best Kennel: Gunner G1 Kennel
  • Best Tote: Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Travel Carrier
  • Best for Cats: Travel Cat The Transpurrter

The Best Airline-Approved Pet Carrier

Away the pet carrier.

  • Quality 5 /5
  • Comfort 5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5

What We Like: Crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety; Water-resistant lining; removable and washable bed; trolley sleeve for seatbelt or rolling suitcase attachment

What We Don't Like: Not suitable for pets over 18 pounds

The Away Pet Carrier is sturdy, sleek, versatile, and easy to clean. Plus, it meets the requirements of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) so it’s suitable for in-cabin use on most major airlines (always check with your flight provider).

During the testing period, our Chihuahua-mix participant was comfortable and secure for the duration of a six-hour flight. The Away carrier's leather and nylon exterior is structured enough to offer protection and stability, but has enough flexibility to squeeze into tight under-seat spaces. We also found it easy to carry by hand or over a shoulder, with double straps similar to a gym bag.

The Pet Carrier has both internal and external pockets, including a side pocket with a waterproof lining and drainage holes—ideal for a collapsible water bowl. Mesh panels on three sides make for excellent ventilation, and each can also be unzipped for quick access to your pet, or covered with privacy panels to block external stimulation. The interior has a padded, fuzzy bed that is both removable and machine washable.

The Spruce Pets / Alessandra Amodio

The Spruce / Sarah Naftzger

The carrier has a weight maximum of 18 pounds, which is lower than others on our list, but keep in mind that some airlines have a 20 pound weight maximum for pet and carrier combined. Airlines may weigh pets with their carriers on the luggage scale, and an 18-pound dog combined with the 4-pound Away travel carrier might lead to travel disruptions, so it's a limit you'll want to be conscious of before traveling.

This bag is more expensive than many of our other favorites, but we found the craftsmanship of this pet carrier to be worth the premium. Away provides a warranty for one year after purchase. It also comes with a dust bag for storage between flights. And to top it all off, this carrier received a five-star crash test rating certification from the Center for Pet Safety .

Available in Jet Black or Coast Blue

An Affordable Alternative

Petsfit expandable pet carrier.

People / JT Wilde

  • Size 4.5 /5
  • Quality 4.5 /5

What We Like: Plush liner can be unzipped and removed for cleaning; expandable side gives pets more room to spread out; includes external pocket and a loop for wheeled luggage handles

What We Don't Like: Handles are not padded and can become uncomfortable

The wire-framed structure of the Petsfit Expandable Pet Carrier allows for flexibility when placed under an airline seat. While you wait to board, a zippered mesh encasement can be opened up while keeping your pet fully contained. Pets are usually required to stay in their carriers unless you are in a designated pet area of the airport. With this carrier, a zippered mesh encasement can be opened up while giving your pet extra room to stretch while keeping them fully contained.

Our participating dog could not fully stand in the small-sized carrier, but they did have room to move around and get cozy. The carrier comes with a plush pad that can be unzipped and fully removed for cleaning.

The Spruce Pets / JT Wilde

The carrier has a padded shoulder strap and two unpadded handles. We found the latter to be slightly uncomfortable when holding for a longer duration (e.g. waiting in line to deplane). To give your hands and shoulder a break, there is a loop on one side to slot through the telescopic handlebar of a suitcase.

Available in three sizes and four colors

Testing: We selected 13 bestselling and highly-rated pet carriers for real-world testing. Tests were conducted with both cats and dogs, with testers using the carrier on domestic flights. Our testers primarily tested the products on long, roundtrip flights , many six hours or more. Carriers were also tested on roadtrips, Amtrak travel, in the subway , and a variety of other travel scenarios, with many testers subjecting their carrier to a wide range of activities over several weeks or months. Testing was completed during the peak holiday season, further stress-testing each of the carriers.

Throughout testing, our volunteer testers followed a methodology created by our testing and research team to ensure we received back consistent notes from tester to tester. Testers provided feedback in the following categories: size, design, portability, ease of cleaning, comfort, quality, and value . Equipped with their first-hand observations and scoring feedback, our editors then ranked and categorized our top picks for the perfect pet carrier to suit your travel needs.

Other Carriers We Tested

In addition to our winners and recommended pet travel carriers, we also tested:

Petmate Aspen Pet Porter Dog Kennel : While not as tough as our favorite cargo hold kennel, this more affordable option scored well with our tester, who used it to travel with a 55-pound dog.

Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier : Our tester cat was able to pry open the zipper and tear this carrier up with her claws—we have some durability concerns. Also, only the smallest two available sizes are suitable as an under seat carry-on.

Sleepypod Air In-Cabin Pet Carrier : This is a high-quality, premium carrier, but its duffle bag design was a little too claustrophobic for our big cat tester, and so at this price point we preferred carriers with a stiffer leather construction.

Arlo Skye The Pet Carrier : We liked the rectangular construction and abundant ventilation, but felt that some of the other premium carriers are an overall better value.

Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier : Another excellent premium option, this carrier earned the same crash test certification from the Center for Pet Safety as our best overall, but it's a little bigger and bulkier, making it a slightly less attractive option for lugging around the airport.

What To Look For

Size Guidelines

Flights have more stringent requirements than other ways of traveling with your pet . The exterior measurements of the carrier you select must fall within the sizing guidelines provided by the airline provider for your flight. A typical limitation is that pet carriers need to be within 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches tall to fly in the cabin. Some airlines also have a maximum weight for your pet plus their carrier, but this varies between airlines, so we recommend using the guidelines provided by the airline you intend to fly with your pet most frequently. Here are the restrictions for some popular airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • United Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • American Airlines

Beyond requirements, the interior of your carrier should be spacious enough for your pet to stand (even temporarily), turn around, lie down, and adopt multiple positions. Commercial calming aids for dogs and cats can help with restlessness and anxiety. Read The Spruce Pets for more travel tips .

Hard-Sided vs. Soft-Sided

The carriers that made our list tend to fall in between hard and soft, offering structured yet flexible coverage for your pet that is just malleable enough to accommodate under the seat dimensions on an airplane. The softest of our selects, the tote-style Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Carrier, has firm base which is important for your pet to feel steady while being carried. If you dog is too big to fly in cabin, then you definitely need a hard-sided kennel, like our Best for Cargo choice, the Gunner G1 Kennel .

Easy Carrying

If your pet carrier will be your personal item on a flight, then it's likely you'll also be juggling a piece of carry-on luggage. If you have a piece of wheeled luggage with a standard handle, then look for what's called a "trolley sleeve" when shopping for a carrier. A trolley sleeve is a tight band that attaches to your luggage handle, allowing your carrier to ride on top of your luggage.

While most carriers feature two handles, you may also want to seek out a carrier with a third, cross-body shoulder strap. This can make it easier to tote a carrier through airports, leaving your hands free for additional luggage. Many of our favorite carriers have a removable shoulder strap, which can be left off if you're trying to save a little weight.

Wild One Travel Carrier

The Spruce Pets / Anna Mejorada

  • Size 3.5 /5
  • Comfort 4 /5
  • Portability 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5

What We Like: Versatile design includes a shoulder strap that can be used as a leash; easy to wipe clean; folds flat when not in use; can be personalized with your dog's name

What We Don't Like: Very snug fit under airplane seat; carrier's measurements exceed limits for some airlines

Best for Small Dogs: This versatile pet carrier has an internal padded mat that can be unfolded to expand giving your dog a cozy space to nap once you arrive at your destination. The bag has a cylindrical shape that does not allow for all small dogs to stand up inside when fully zipped up but does offer more space horizontally for them to spread out. Our tester dog, an eight-pound Pomeranian, had space to lay down, put their head up, and get comfortable, but if you’ve got a short-legged friend, like Dachshund , or a very petite pal, like a Chihuahua , then they’ll fit right in.

The carrier is well made with durable zippers, allowing for flexibility in use and mesh paneling for airflow and to keep your dog in view. To get your dog acclimated to the bag, you can open up one of the sides to let them come in and out as they please, and when you are on the plane, you can unzip just the top to slide in a treat. The shoulder strap can be removed and used as a leash, and there are two additional padded handles for a comfortable and secure grip.

A slotted panel on the back allows you to place it on the handlebars of your suitcase or secure it in a car by passing a seatbelt through. However, unlike our selection for Best Overall, the Away Pet Carrier, this bag has not been crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety. The carrier is available in black, green, and tan, and folds up flat for storage.

Available in black, tan, and a limited edition spruce color

Gunner G1 Kennel Intermediate

The Spruce Pets / Lisa Pezzuto

What We Like: Lifetime warranty, back wheels make the heavy carrier easier to transport; small, medium, and intermediate sizes are 5 Star Crash Test certified by the Center For Pet Safety ; reinforced sides absorb impact and regulate temperature

What We Don't Like: Very heavy and typically requires more than one person to move

Best Kennel: If your dog is too big to fly in the main cabin—which for most airlines is around 20 pounds—then they will have to ride in the cargo section of the airplane. The best option we found is the Gunner G1 Kennel. It’s designed to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, with rotomolded double walls to regulate the temperature and absorb the impact for any bumps that may occur during takeoff, in the air, and when landing. You won’t be able to access your dog during your flight, so it’s important to make sure they are secure prior to boarding.

Your dog will need water in their kennel for the flight, and the recessed floor for this carrier will limit any discomfort they may experience in case of a spill. You can also add an orthopedic bed designed for the kennel or your dog’s favorite blanket.

The Spruce / Lisa Pezzuto

The kennels are made in the United States and come with a lifetime warranty. There are four sizes available and all except the largest received a five-star crash test certification from the Center for Pet Safety .

To find the right size for your dog, Gunner offers an online tool that takes into consideration your dog’s weight and measurements with length from nose to base of tail and height from front paws to top of the head. The kennel has rear wheels to help with transport, but we found it necessary to have two adults at a minimum for moving, especially with a dog inside. And in case anyone with hands instead of paws gets stuck inside, the door can be opened from both sides by humans.

Available in four sizes and five colors

Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Travel Carrier

Love Thy Beast

What We Like: Sturdy base with an easy-to-remove platform; large zipper pocket on one side; smaller zipper pocket also functions as a loop for suitcase handle or seatbelt; lightweight and suitable for daily use

What We Don't Like: Soft sides don't provide much protection.

Best Tote: The Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Travel Carrier is a soft-sided tote-style bag with two shoulder straps and a sturdy base so your pet can stand confidently. It’s made of nylon and canvas, and the internal panel, which is held in place with hook and loop straps, is easy to take out and wipe clean. It’s also very lightweight and suitable for daily use.

Our eight-pound canine participant was able to stand up, sit, lay, and turn around inside the bag when fully zipped. The bag is designed to support dogs up to 25 pounds.

The two longer sides of the rectangular-shaped bag are opaque and each features a zippered pocket. One pocket is large enough to stash essentials such as puppy pads , a leash , and a collapsible water bowl . The other pocket is slimmer with dual zippers so it can also be used as a loop for a seatbelt or suitcase handlebars. The top and shorter sides are made from a durable mesh so you and your pet can keep an eye on each other.

We found that the mesh made it difficult for other passengers to see our furry traveler, and the bag has less structured protection than other carriers we tested, so be sure to give your aisle mates notice that your pet is inside so they can watch their step.

Available in multiple colors and material s , including waxed canvas and nylon

Travel Cat The Transpurrter Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier

The Spruce Pets / Morgan Ashley Parker

What We Like: Scratch-resistant mesh and water-resistant interior; full blackout capability to keep pets calm; various straps allow for customized carry

What We Don't Like: Carrier is long, limiting ability to fit under all airline seats; too unwieldy for wear as a cross-body carrier

Best for Cats: With scratch-resistant mesh, the Transpurrter Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier from Travel Cat is an excellent choice for air travel with a kitty companion ( here are some of our favorite cat carriers for your other travel scenarios). If you have an anxious cat or one that is new to travel, this carrier is designed to offer a calming space with a black interior and a full blackout side panel to block out external stimulation.

The versatile bag can be carried in multiple ways including as a duffle, a backpack, and on top of a suitcase. We found the bag to be easy to carry in all formations except as a crossbody bag. But the weight distribution might feel different for you with your cat inside.

Travel + Leisure / Katherine Alex Beaven

The Spruce / Morgan Ashley Parker

TripSavvy / Morgan Ashley Parker

A leash tether is located inside so you can open up one of the panels to let your cat poke their head out. This is both adorable and very convenient for layovers, giving your cat the opportunity to see where they are without worrying that they will escape. To further foil any spur-of-the-moment urges to bolt from the bag, the zippers snap closed to prevent your cat from pawing it open.

The carrier features external pockets for essentials, is easy to spot clean, and has an internal mat that can be removed and machine washed.

Available in Dark Charcoal, Heather Grey, and Heather Grey & Teal

There is no standard among airlines so you have to check the guidelines with your flight provider for each flight. All of the carriers on our list have been approved by at least one major airline provider based in the United States, including Delta, United Airlines, American Airlines, Southwest, or Jetblue, but each has its own pet policy.

Some airlines have a maximum weight of 20 pounds, which typically includes both your pet and their carrier. But each flight provider has their own pet policy.

It’s important to give your dog or cat as much space as possible but you can offer a few comforts. A small treat or toy to reinforce good behavior, and a small blanket can make the interior a little cozier. Introduce your pet to the carrier at least a few days before your flight to help them get accustomed to the space.

Introduce your pet to the carrier at least a few days before your flight to help them get accustomed to the space. Place a treat inside so they build a positive association with the carrier. Before you board, make sure your pet has the opportunity to pee–no one likes to be contained with a full bladder. Try to remain calm and upbeat, pets pick up on the emotions of their humans very quickly, so if you are relaxed, they are more likely to be relaxed. If anxiety is a reoccurring issue for your pet, speak with your veterinarian about the appropriate options for your cat or dog.

"These are great carriers as they are hardy for travel, collapse for storage, and fit perfectly under the seat for in cabin travel. Also, I like that they have one side that is mesh and the other side is solid with a pocket. You can face solid side toward the aisle so people walking around the plane don't upset your dog." He adds, "Overall, I would recommend it for in-cabin plane travel."

Frequent traveler and luxury travel advisor Ashley Les, founder of Postcards From , also appreciates that the design puts her cats at ease when flying. "I find that with more mesh, cats are exposed to more light and sight – it gets them more anxious," she says, adding: "There are multiple ways to get my cats in the carriers, from the sides or above, as well. I love that you can take out the bottom to wash it separately."

Price: $28.99 or less for medium

Sherpa's Original Deluxe Pet Carrier – Medium in black against white background.

Courtesy of Sherpa

What sets this carrier apart: Beyond a patented, crash-tested flexible wire frame that keeps your little buddy safe, Sherpa provides a Guaranteed on Board program that offers a refund for your flight and airline pet fee if you're denied boarding because of the small or medium sizes of this carrier. This mesh and polyester bag is an industry standard with good airflow. The front and top entries have locking zippers, and this collapsible carrier also features a removable (and machine-washable) faux-lambskin liner, a rear pocket for storage, and a seat belt safety strap that doubles as a luggage strap.

Travelers appreciate: This Sherpa carrier is renowned for its reliable functionality and amazing value. Recent travelers say the medium carrier fits well under the seat and keeps their pet comfortable in transit.

Price: $70 or less for medium

What sets this carrier apart: This Petsfit carrier's medium size adheres to most airline requirements (as does the small carrier). One of the mesh windows can be unzipped to form an extra compartment, expanding the carrier by 9.4 inches for an extended width of 20.4 inches. This product is a great option if you need a carrier for air travel but still want your pet to enjoy a bit more space to stretch out when not tucked under the airplane seat.

The sturdy solid wire construction ensures the bag won't collapse but is flexible enough to tuck into a small space, though you may need to remove the rods on either side if the carrier is too tall to fit easily underneath. There's a side pocket for storage, double zippers and a water-repellent inner cloth.

Travelers appreciate: "The Petsfit carrier was flexible enough to squeeze under most airplane seats, but still was sturdy enough to hold," says Alexandra Lauren of the travel blog The Bucket List Mermaid , who has used this carrier to fly with her cat. "My kitty could look around the airport with the built-in leash in the carrier. The expandable portion was an added bonus because it allowed for more room for my pet when on long layovers or when I had an empty seat on the airplane." Lauren also recommends Petsfit's expandable backpack-style carrier for a hands-free option.

Price:  $56.99 or less for medium

Natuvalle 6-in-1 Pet Carrier – Small in blue against white background.

Courtesy of Natuvalle

What sets this carrier apart: For travelers seeking versatility, this Natuvalle cat or dog carrier can be used like a backpack, shoulder bag, tote with carrying handles or even – if worn on your front – a baby carrier. This convertible choice can also be used as a car seat crate with built-in seat belt loops, and you have the option of using it either in the upright or side position. Other features include zipper locks, mesh panels, reinforced stitching, two walk-through doors and a photo ID tag. The carrier is foldable and has reflective stripes for night travel. While there are medium and large size options, the extra-small and small sizes are your best bet when it comes to fitting under an airplane seat.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the versatility of this bag; some travelers say the carrier fits best under the seat when on its side, as the upright position can be too tall.

Price:  $119.90 or less for small

Best Backpack: PetAmi Backpack Pet Carrier

What sets this carrier apart: Go hands-free with this PetAmi backpack-style carrier. A sturdy frame maintains its shape while you traipse through airport terminals, with chest and waist buckles for extra support. Four-sided access makes loading easy, and a rollaway mesh top means your furry friend can stick their head out the top when you're not in the air. The safety strap and buckle are designed to thwart even great escape artists, and a sherpa-lined bed entices fur babies to relax. The backpack carrier color options include red and purple.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the easy carrying this style provides, though they advise that you'll need to store this bag on its side in the plane cabin, and it won't fit on every airline.

Price: $39.99 or less

Away's The Pet Carrier in light blue against white background.

Courtesy of Away

What sets this carrier apart: It's a splurge, but this cat and dog carrier is made by Away, a popular luggage brand known for its sleek design and functionality. The same applies to this nylon and leather tote, which comes in black or a coast blue. The water-resistant lining is paired with sherpa bedding and exterior pockets that can hold a phone, keys or waste bags. If you already have an Away suitcase, this carrier will fit seamlessly over the handle with its trolley sleeve.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners who travel with this bag like that it's roomy, saying their pets seem comfortable inside. This carrier fits pets up to 18 pounds but is a bit on the larger side of an airline-approved carry-on, so be sure to research your airline's policies before taking it aboard.

Price: $225 or less

Dog inside a blue Sleepypod Air against white background.

What sets this carrier apart: The Sleepypod Air is designed to compress to fit under the seat during takeoff and landing; when the seat belt sign is off, your pet can enjoy slightly more room (but be aware that it doesn't hold its reduced size in a freestanding position, only when tucked into a small space). This unique carrier employs sturdy luggage-grade ballistic nylon for its base, with a panel of mesh running along the front, top and back. A removable privacy panel can be slid over part of the mesh. Available in multiple colors, this crash-tested model also has a seat belt strap, a trolley sleeve and a comfortable shoulder strap for carrying it.

Travelers appreciate: Users like the carrier's many features and say it's a good option especially for larger cats traveling by air, but some pet owners felt there was not enough airflow (especially with the privacy panel) for longer flights.

Price: $199.99 or less

What sets this carrier apart: Any furry friends larger than about 20 pounds will likely have to travel in the cargo hold if they're not a service animal. You'll want a very sturdy dog crate for the journey that meets every regulation, and SportPet's kennel passes the test for many travelers. This carrier meets International Air Transport Association guidelines with two snap-on water dishes and four stickers that indicate a live animal is inside; a "floor gutter" contains messes for easy cleanup. The durable plastic frame is connected with metal nuts and bolts and features airline-required tie holes for bungees.

This travel crate comes in six sizes, from small up to XXX-large, so be sure to determine the right size for your pet. A cushioned bed is not included and costs extra. For more information on pets traveling in cargo, consult the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Travelers appreciate: Pet owners like the sturdy construction and the compliance with airline regulations, but the traveler-favorite feature is the removable wheels, which are included with the carrier (except with size small).

Price: Ranges by size from $76 to $385

Best for Cats in Cargo: Petmate Two-Door Kennel

Petmate's Two-Door Kennel in pink against white background.

Courtesy of Petmate

What sets this carrier apart: This option made of hard plastic and steel wire is tough enough to protect your cargo-contained cat, according to recent travelers. (Keep in mind that airlines do not recommend hard-sided carriers for in-cabin travel, and this kennel is too large to fit under airline seats.) The two front and top doors assist with entering and exiting, and color options like hot pink or blue will make this kennel easy to spot. The carrier comes in small (24-inch) and extra-small (19-inch) sizes, so choose accordingly based on the measurements of your cat. As with most hard-sided crates, you will have to purchase a plush bed separately.

Travelers appreciate: "I haven't traveled by air with this carrier, but I've owned it for years and really appreciate how sturdy it is," says Catriona Kendall, associate editor of travel at U.S. News. "The assembly of the carrier is straightforward, and my cats feel safe enough to hang out in it at home."

Price: $66.99 or less for 24-inch

How to choose the best pet carrier

There are a few major points to consider when choosing a carrier that will serve as your pet's safe space during a flight:

Size: Selecting the right carrier size for your pet is essential not only for your pets' comfort but also for their safety, according to Sara Hogan, hospital manager at Clarendon Animal Care in Virginia. "Please ensure the measurements for your carrier meet a standard that allows for your pet to comfortably turn around AND lay down," she says. But be aware that if the carrier is too large for your furry friend, they could end up injured in transit. The best way to determine the right size is to take measurements of your pet; to be as precise as possible, use the IATA's formula .

Keep in mind that only carriers able to fit under the seat in front of you are allowed in the plane cabin – a space that will vary by airline. Consult the next section on airline policies for more information.

Airflow: Don't underestimate the importance of adequate airflow. "Carriers and crates really need to have proper ventilation for short or long-term travel," Hogan says. "There IS a difference between taking your pet down the street to a friend's house or the vet and taking your pet on a trip with any sort of additional time involved."

Stability: Check the quality of all the zippers and materials − you want this to be an escape-proof carrier, and any malfunction can put your pet at risk. "If something has previously broken or fallen off the carrier or crate look to replace the piece or the entire crate/carrier," Hogan advises.

Soft-sided vs. hard-sided: If your pet is small enough to fly in the cabin, most airlines highly recommend a soft-sided carrier, which gives the most flexibility. Airlines are often slightly more lenient with the dimensions for soft-sided carriers in the cabin as long as they are able to fit underneath the seat without blocking the aisle of the airplane. Another bonus: Soft pet carriers often come with removable fleece bedding for extra comfort.

Note: Crates and carriers destined for the cargo hold of the plane must be hard-sided. Find more details on carrier specifications for the cargo hold in the FAQ section at the bottom of this page.

Airline pet carrier dimensions

Each airline sets its own specifications and safety rules for pets in the plane cabin with you, so be sure to check with your intended airline for dimension limits, breed restrictions and other guidelines. Be aware, too, that most major airlines based in the U.S. do not offer an option to transport animals in cargo.

Use the links below to find more information on the specific pet policies for the following U.S.-based airlines. Each airline's size limit for soft-sided pet carriers in the cabin is also listed, with dimensions given in length by width by height.

  • Alaska Airlines : 17 x 11 x 9.5 inches
  • Allegiant Air : 19 x 16 x 9 inches
  • American Airlines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches
  • Delta Air Lines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches
  • Frontier Airlines : 18 x 14 x 8 inches
  • Hawaiian Airlines : 16 x 10 x 9.5 inches
  • JetBlue : 17 x 12.5 x 8.5 inches
  • Southwest Airlines : 18.5 x 13.5 x 9.5 inches
  • Spirit Airlines : 18 x 14 x 9 inches
  • Sun Country Airlines : 16 x 10 x 8 inches
  • United Airlines : 18 x 11 x 11 inches

How to prepare to fly with a pet

Help your pet acclimate.

When preparing to travel with your furry companion, planning ahead is key, especially if your pet isn't used to being confined in a crate or carrier. "I recommend buying the carrier as far in advance of travel as possible to allow your dog to become comfortable relaxing in the carrier in a familiar home environment before traveling," says Amanda Farah, CPDT-KA, national training and behavior coordinator for Best Friends Animal Society.

Some pets are sensitive to loud noises, so one way to prepare them for the journey is by playing recordings of sounds they might encounter in transit, Farah says. "I'd say a good general rule is that because so much of what they encounter during air travel will be new and potentially stressful, you should familiarize them to many factors as possible in the weeks or even months leading up to travel."

Book your travel far in advance

Keep in mind that airlines limit the number of pets allowed on a flight, so book early and try to secure a direct flight to cut down on travel time.

Familiarize yourself with your departure airport

Before you set off on your journey, familiarize yourself with the airport you're departing from – such as where to find a pet relief area – and how to go through security with a pet in tow. For example, you must never place your pet on the security conveyor belt (only the empty carrier goes through the X-ray tunnel).

Research your destination

This is a crucial step. Some countries will not allow pets in at all, while other destinations (such as Hawaii) may have strict rules about rabies vaccines or require all animals to travel in cargo. Christine Barton, a veterinarian with The Vets , recommends checking the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service website to learn about requirements for health certificates, vaccines and more.

Other considerations will depend on what type of vacation you're planning; if it involves hiking or camping with your dog, Barton suggests checking the expected weather, making a small emergency kit for you and your pet, and considering a GPS tracker for remote areas. Wherever you're headed, locate the closest emergency animal hospital just in case and make sure to book pet-friendly accommodations .

Consult your vet

Once you've done your research, your veterinarian can help ensure your pet has everything you both need to travel, such as microchipping, required or recommended vaccines (and proof of them), testing, and health records, Barton says. A vet can also address any health concerns. "Doctors can discuss risks, precautions, and things to monitor while traveling," Barton explains, adding that you should make sure your pet is up to date on needed preventive medications, such as treatment for fleas or heartworm.

If your furry friend struggles with anxiety, your vet can prescribe them a medication to make the journey less stressful for both of you. "Talk to your veterinarian before administering any sort of medication to your pet, but definitely consider it for future travel," Hogan says.

Frequently Asked Questions

A carrier being "airline-approved" typically means it adheres to the airline's size requirements, is leakproof, provides adequate airflow and keeps your pet securely inside.

You can find a pet carrier on wheels, such as the  Snoozer 4-in-1 Roll Around Pet Carrier  or the  SportPet Rolling Plastic Kennel , but keep in mind that most wheeled pet carriers are too large to fit under the seat on most airlines, even with detachable wheels. Wheeled options can make your furry friend easier for you to transport, but they also tend to make for a bumpy ride for your pet, so consider carefully whether a carrier on wheels is right for your cat or dog, especially if they're easily frightened.

Most major airlines in the U.S. do not allow pets to travel in cargo; some, like American Airlines, only offer this service for active military or diplomatic personnel. Of the major U.S. airlines, only Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines currently accept animals in the cargo hold, so keep that in mind if you have a medium or large dog – or if your intended destination does not welcome in-cabin pets.

Most animals who fly in the cargo hold are fine, but there's still a risk of your pet being killed, injured or lost, according to the Humane Society of the United States. The most common dangers are excessively hot or cold temperatures, poorly ventilated crates, and rough handling. Be sure to follow all IATA guidelines for cargo crates to ensure your pet's safety. Before you book a flight, you may also want to research the airline's history with companion animals in the cargo hold.

The kennel you choose for cargo travel must allow your pet enough room to stand, sit upright, turn around while standing and lie in a natural position, according to the IATA. Carriers must made of rigid materials and include a solid roof, a leakproof base, a door with well-maintained hardware, working handles and ventilation on all four sides. Labels that say "Live Animal" and "This Way Up" are also required by the IATA.

A water dish must be securely affixed to the inside of the carrier, with open access for your pet to drink and for someone to refill it from the outside without opening the crate. A food container can either be inside the carrier if it's sealed or attached to the outside.

A pet carrier usually counts as either a personal item or a carry-on. Depending on the airline policy, you may be able to bring either a personal item or a carry-on bag (not both) in addition to your carrier. Check your airline's carry-on luggage allowance and pet policy to see what you can bring.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires puppies and kittens to be at least 8 weeks old to travel, but airlines may impose their own age restrictions on top of that. On Delta, for example, companion animals must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic flights. United Airlines says your pet should be at least 4 months old for international travel to comply with rabies vaccine requirements.

Your furry friend will incur certain fees for flying, but the cost will vary by airline. American Airlines, as an example, charges a $125 service fee for a carry-on pet, while Allegiant's fee is $50. Cargo fees may depend on trip details: Hawaiian Airlines charges $60 in fees for domestic flights and $225 for flights between Hawaii and North America, while the cargo fee on Alaska Airlines is $100. Service animals typically fly at no charge as long as they meet the airline's requirements.

It depends on your pet, according to Hogan. "If they're quite anxious you may want to offer food with a bit more advanced time prior to the flight to avoid vomiting in the carrier or on themselves, however, not too much time where they'll be hungry throughout the travel day," she advises. "Water is important to offer as often as possible in any setting. Access to using the bathroom more than once prior to travel is also advised so as not to miss an opportunity for output!"

Conveniently, some airports may have pet relief areas your dog can use either before or after you go through security, but that's something you'll have to research beforehand.

No. Unless your pet is a service animal of a certain size, airlines typically require pets in the cabin to be secured in their carrier and stowed under the seat in front of you.

Dog is waiting for the owner on the railway platform

Packing smarter can make all the difference when loading up an overflowing trunk or trying to avoid a checked bag at the airport. But while you worry about making all your stuff more manageable, don’t forget that there’s likely a better solution for your canine traveling companion, too. If you’re still relying on a spare backpack or, worse yet, a plastic bag to carry your dog’s gear, you’re ready for the convenience of a dog travel bag.

With a bag designed for your pet, no space goes to waste. You’ll find dozens of clever designs to carry around your dog’s accessories, with many including on-the-go travel bowls to keep your pup content at each stop. You have numerous excellent options to consider and to help you cut straight to the most worthwhile products, follow our reviews of the ten best travel bags for dogs.

A Quick Comparison of Our Favorites in 2024

The 10 best travel bags for dogs, 1. mobile dog gear week away tote pet travel bag – best overall.

Mobile Dog Gear’s Week Away Tote is the ultimate travel bag, adding more unique features than the average carrier while using almost the same amount of space. With the larger option having two food bags capable of carrying up to 30 cups of kibble, it can handle everything from a weekend trip to the lake to a week-long out-of-town vacation.

Jet setters enjoy comprehensive features to facilitate travel with their pets. Like many dog travel bags, it meets most airline carry-on measurements, and the collapsible bowls and placemats fold up into the bag, storing efficiently to make feeding your dog quick and pain-free at every stop.

While the bag generally has a quality build, the only issue many consumers had involved the zippers easily breaking. Otherwise, the design is practical and effective. Several mesh pouches around the outside provide easy access and organization for frequently needed items. The Mobile Dog Gear bag makes the journey with your dog effortless and worry-free, earning our pick for the best overall travel bag for dogs.

  • Large food bag capacity
  • Several mesh storage pockets
  • Includes ID tag
  • Zippers break easily
  • Not water-resistant

2. PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag – Best Value

The PetAmi Dog & Cat Travel Bag is the best travel bag for dogs for the money; it’s a low-priced, high-quality, and fully functional tote for all of your dog’s belongings. The storage pockets aren’t as numerous as those on some alternative bags, and it doesn’t have the plastic mat for the collapsible bowls, but there’s little you’ll miss out on otherwise with this airline-friendly carrier.

Rather than mesh pockets, the PetAmi bag’s exterior storage compartments use the same water-resistant Oxford covering, keeping all your accessories safe when caught in the rain. The only slight knock against the pockets involves the interior mesh pocket, which lacks a zipper and lets loose items fall out when opening the case.

  • Water-resistant outer cover
  • Leak-proof lining
  • Several color options
  • No mat for bowls
  • Inner mesh pocket doesn’t zip

3. Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack – Premium Choice

The stylish and multi-functional Mobile Dog Gear Weekender Backpack keeps all your puppy’s materials easily accessible. Collapsible food bowls accompany a fold-down non-slip feeding mat and two food bags with space for up to five cups each.

With the undersized capacity, this bag is primarily for smaller dogs. But if you have a weekend getaway or camping trip planned, it could be the perfect solution for any pet. Small touches, like the quilted outer cover, dog bone ID tag, and built-in waste bag dispenser pocket at the front of the pack, elevate the design and enhance the comfort.

  • Waste bag dispensing pocket
  • Fashionable quilted cover
  • Small food bag capacity
  • Limited color options

4. Rubyloo Dog Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Rubyloo’s The Original Doggy Bag™ promises to make travel more fun with its patented design and 100% lifetime warranty backing the well-built traveler. The water-resistant cover comes in five colors (including a cool camo print), has two collapsible bowls, and includes two food carriers that hold eight cups each.

The Rubyloo dog travel bag is comfortable to carry and supplies some of the best storage features to keep your items handy and secure. Alongside the removable primary compartment divider, you get a front pouch with a zippered pocket, a bottle storage side pocket, a mesh rear pocket to hold a couple of frisbees, and a side pocket with a waste bag dispenser.

  • Ample storage compartments
  • Waste bag dispenser
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Only one available size
  • Not ideal for larger dogs

5. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag leaves nothing out, ensuring you have the organization, flexibility, and dependable design you need to travel with confidence. Two closable front pockets join a mesh pocket covering the luggage sleeve, an elastic travel bottle side pocket, and a dual-zippered side pocket, letting you quickly retrieve tissues or dog waste bags.

While the water-resistant pack has plenty of features, a few minor issues prevent it from being the perfect travel bag for dogs. The small containers only fit a total of about 10 cups of food. It’s only ideal for short outings and weekend trips unless you have a small dog. The magnetic buttons on the front pocket also have more potential to come undone, so you must be careful about how you pack.

  • Versatile storage compartments
  • Zippered tissue/bag compartment
  • Small food containers
  • Magnetic clasps are less secure
  • Food bowl colors are random

6. Top Dog Pet Gear Dog Travel Bag

Top Dog Pet Gear’s Dog Travel Bag covers all the essentials at an excellent price point. Two food pouches carry 6.5 cups of food a piece, which is a relatively small amount compared to some other listed items. But if you have a small–medium dog, it could suit you perfectly for an entire week.

Everything is here except the bag dispenser and placemat for the bowls. A spacious magnetic front pocket accompanies a mesh back pocket, an elastic banded water bottle side pouch, and a zippered side pocket on the exterior. Inside the bag, the Velcro divider compartment divider and zippered mesh pocket efficiently store toys, grooming accessories, food, and more.

  • Relatively inexpensive
  • Ideal size for small–medium dogs
  • No placemat for bowls

7. Teamoy Dog Travel Bag

The Teamoy Dog Travel Bag sets itself apart by adding an extra storage section for dog owners who aren’t enjoying enough organization from the traditional travel bag design. Sitting above the primary storage area is a compartment containing a large, zippered mesh pocket under the lid and three additional mesh pockets, giving you four more places to organize your dog’s leashes, toys, grooming tools, and other small items.

The substantial storage space should make you feel confident bringing dogs of any size on a multi-day excursion. And with the larger bag having containers capable of holding close to 30 cups of food, it provides plenty of room for your dog’s kibble and treats.

  • Extra storage compartment
  • Large food containers
  • Zippers prone to breakage

8. BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag

Quality combines with a hint of fashion in the BAGLHER Dog Travel Bag , featuring a durable, water-resistant Oxford outer cover in 12 unique color and print options. Available in two sizes, it has an ample food storage system for several days of adventures and an efficient arrangement that keeps it from feeling bulky.

While the overall construction quality is stout, the BAGLHER loses a few points for its small bowls, which are unlikely to suit a large dog, and the missing exterior rear pocket. Although it has a luggage sleeve, the bag lacks the wide pocket many packs feature, taking away substantial storage opportunities.

  • Durable build
  • Several unique colors and designs
  • Good food storage capacity
  • Small bowls
  • No rear pocket

9. ARCA PET Travel Backpack

The ARCA PET Travel Backpack is comfortable and classy, a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry pack that conveniently organizes your dog’s necessities. A single waterproof container efficiently stores up to 15 cups of food, and 11 unique pockets across the interior and exterior offer separate storage for all kinds of equipment. Although it isn’t as spacious as some other packs, it’s one of the easiest to haul around for a day or two.

  • Several storage compartments
  • Comfortable to carry
  • Relatively small capacity

10. beka. Dog Travel Bag

You won’t have to worry about forgetting a thing with the beka. Dog Travel Bag . Two large food storage containers can hold several days’ worth of food for even the heaviest dogs, and the added compartment up top gives you the extra pockets you need to keep all your pet’s items organized. Although the bowls may be too small for a large dog, the overall construction quality and thoughtful features make this one of the best values of any dog travel bag.

  • Only one size available

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Travel Bags for Dogs

Dog travel bags generally follow similar formulas to the point that you can expect certain features from nearly any product. Totes have food containers, collapsible bowls, and luggage sleeves, while almost every primary compartment uses a Velcro divider. In many areas, manufacturers try not to tinker with what already works. Still, there are a few ways you can distinguish travel bags and make the best choice for your dog and traveling style.

Keeping all your dog’s toys stored comfortably in your bag is a top goal for any owner. Checking the bag’s dimensions and capacity will ensure you can pack everything you need for a multi-day outing.

Some bags offer their internal storage capacity in liters for you to compare. But you can also glean a certain amount by comparing the bag’s exterior dimensions. Sizing is critical for planning your traveling as well. Although most bags are airline-friendly, the slight variations in sizing could be the difference in whether you can add that extra towel or hair brush.

Food Storage Containers

Food storage containers are water-resistant, lined pouches that typically come with travel bags for dogs. They have handles and wipe down easily with a damp cloth. Although the design doesn’t change much, the capacity will, with some capable of holding enough food for over a week and others only handling less than a weekend’s worth.

The number of cups of food that will fit in each container can vary slightly depending on the kibble size. If you can’t find the capacity for the food bags, you can compare their dimensions to get a rough idea of how much they’ll hold.

Two bowls typically come with the pack, with some including a folding placemat. The collapsible bowls usually consist of BPA-free silicone, compressing in for easy storage in the bag, though you can find some bags with bulkier, non-collapsible bowls made of lightweight stainless steel. Plastic bowls should also have a hook hole for a carabiner. Regardless of whether the pack includes the small carabiners, the hanging loop allows you to store your food bowls on the bag strap hook to free up space inside.

If you have a larger dog, prioritize travel bags with wider bowl sizes. Too many consumers buy a pack without considering their 100-pound dog’s needs in this department and end up with an enormous challenge getting them to eat out of undersized bowls. While small dogs can eat out of almost anything comfortably, a 5-inch-wide dog dish won’t be feasible for a dog with a large snout. The bowl size is one reason Mobile Dog Gear’s bag shines: it has 7-inch-wide square bowls.

Special Features

Dog travel bags can sometimes seem like the same product with different labels. The best travel bags for dogs subscribe to similar tried-and-true versatile features, but with a closer look, you can find notable differences beyond the bag’s size.

  • First aid kit (these usually do not contain the first aid materials)
  • Poop bag/wipe dispenser
  • Feeding placemat
  • Treat pouch

Don’t discount the importance of the color, either. Fitting alongside the rest of your luggage, dog travel bags should ideally be an aesthetic match. If the detailed specs aren’t overly critical to your decision, explore the surprising array of bag colors, patterns, and prints to personalize the look and create your style.

You have two essential styles of dog travel bags available : a tote or a backpack. Totes generally offer the most capacity, exterior storage pockets, and convenient access to anything you need due to their squat and wide shapes. You will usually have three transporting options: a carrying handle, removable shoulder straps, and a sleeve to fix the bag around the pull-up handle on your rolling luggage. A tote is ideal for multi-day trips and the most convenient for storing in a car’s trunk or on an airplane as a carry-on or personal item.

Backpacks are generally taller than they are wide, meaning you may have to go digging if you leave a toy at the bottom of the bag. Exterior storage pockets are often more limited in size and amount. Still, you’ll get many of the same essential features that totes have, such as the collapsible food bowls.

While totes are superior to backpacks for functional storage, backpacks are the most comfortable and convenient. If you plan to go on hikes or short weekend getaways and want to keep your gear on hand without it being cumbersome, a backpack is the way to go.

With a well-rounded set of features, including ample storage capacity, large bowls, and a sturdy build, the Mobile Dog Gear Week Away travel bag will reliably suit dogs of any size and offer the ultimate travel experience. For those looking for great deals, PetAmi and Top Dog deliver affordable, high-quality designs, while Modoker and BAGLHER supply a slew of colorful packs to help you stay fashionable. • A Quick Look at Our Favorites in 2024
  • The 10 Best Dog Travel Bags
  • 1. PetAmi Dog Travel Bag – Best Overall

PetAmi Dog Travel Bag

While backpacks tend to offer more comfort and convenience when carrying them, they don’t offer as much space, compartmentalization, or stability as handled tote organizers like the PetAmi Dog Travel Bag .

The PetAmi comes in a good range of colors and designs and has two main compartments within the bag. One holds the two food containers that are included with your purchase, and the other similarly sized compartment can be used to hold blankets, coats, and other larger items. Multiple pockets also provide space for leashes, toys, and more. As well as the food containers, the bag also includes two collapsible bowls. The whole bag has a capacity of 22 liters (6 gallons), which should include enough room to hold food for a few days, but you may need something larger if you’re going away for a week or more.

The reasonable cost, decent size, and convenient and intelligent compartmental design of the bag make this the best available dog travel bag, but the cloth food containers are a challenge to clean, and the mesh pockets tend to leak their contents when you open the top.

  • Compartmental design keeps everything in place
  • Includes two food storage containers and two bowls
  • Plenty of pockets and compartments
  • Food containers are tricky to clean
  • Top pockets could do with being zippered
  • 2. Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag – Best Value

Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag Accessories Supplies Organizer

The Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag has a very similar design to that of the PetAmi above, but it does have a smaller capacity of approximately 16 liters (4 gallons), compared to the 22 of the PetAmi. However, it is very competitively priced, being one of the cheapest options on this list, and it has some good features.

The main section of the bag holds the included food storage containers and can be used for coats or blankets and leashes. There are also multiple pockets and the top pocket of the Bundaloo is zippered so everything stays in place. This bag also includes two collapsible containers.

It is small and is best suited to small breed dogs for day trips or, at a stretch, a weekend away. If you’re traveling any longer than this, you will need to take additional food in separate containers or use Ziplock bags. However, the low cost and the well-laid-out design make the Bundaloo the best dog travel bag for the money.

  • Very competitively priced
  • Plenty of pockets, including a zippered pocket at the top
  • Includes two storage containers and two collapsible bowls
  • 3. Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe – Premium Choice

Mobile Dog Gear, Dog Travel Bag

Backpacks are more convenient for carrying, which makes them ideal for hiking or camping trips, and also if you have a number of bags to carry. The load is spread across the bag and your hands are left free to carry other bags or to hold your dog’s leash. Although they tend to be smaller than handbags, this isn’t true of the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe . Its 24-liter capacity means it can carry more than the PetAmi and the Bundaloo above. It includes two food carriers and two collapsible bowls, and it also includes a placemat and is made from heavy-duty polyester to prevent damage and prolong its life.

It does have one large pocket, but if you want something with compartments this deluxe bag may not be the best choice. The design won’t be to everybody’s taste, either, plus the Mobile Dog Gear Dog Travel Bag Deluxe is expensive.

  • The backpack is easy to carry
  • Includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Hardwearing design
  • Only one pocket
  • 4. ARCA PET Travel Bag – Best for Puppies

Travel Bag for Dog Backpack

If you’re traveling with a puppy, you don’t necessarily need as much storage space as you do for an adult dog, but you do still need plenty of space for food and bowls, while also having your hands free to be able to walk or, more likely, carry the puppy.

As such, a backpack design is your best option, and this ARCA PET travel bag , with 18 liters of carrying capacity, has enough room for puppy provisions while also being easy and comfortable to carry around. As well as the main compartment, it has pockets on either side, a double pocket on the back, and a pocket and poop bag or wipe dispenser on the front. It also includes one food storage container and two collapsible bowls.

The pockets are convenient, but because there are so many, they do reduce the amount of space in the main compartment of the bag and because you end up packing the main bag itself, there can be a problem with the stitching of the seams bursting. For a small dog or puppy with limited carrying requirements, though, it is a good quality bag for convenient carrying.

  • Plenty of pockets for organization
  • Includes a poop bag dispenser pocket
  • Lightweight and easy to carry
  • Main compartment feels small
  • Seam stitching can burst if the bag is overfilled
  • 5. Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag

Taking your dog on a plane means you will need provisions for the journey, and ideally, these need to be on hand so that you can give your dog food and water when required. An airline travel bag needs to be big enough that it can hold everything you need but not so large or awkwardly shaped that it won’t be allowed on as hand luggage.

The Higher Level Airline Approved Dog Travel Bag measures 16 x 14 inches so it will fit under airline seats and should be accepted by all airlines. It includes two waterproof food containers and two collapsible food bowls. It has a large pocket on the front, pockets on either side, and a poop bag dispenser, which can be very convenient when you take your dog for a toilet break outside the airport.

The bag can also sit conveniently over extended baggage handles so it can be stacked on the trolley or while walking. It is a little more expensive than some of the alternatives, and although it can be worn as a backpack it isn’t comfortable to do so, but it is a well-sized bag that is very well suited for taking on airplanes.

  • Airline-approved bag fits under plane seats
  • Include two food containers and two collapsible bowls
  • Can be stacked and carried with other luggage
  • Not comfortable as a backpack
  • 6. Lekesky Dog Travel Bag

Lekesky Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved

The 25-liter (6-gallon) Lekesky Dog Travel Bag is also airline compliant, fits under airline seats, and can be hooked around luggage handles. It has multiple pockets and side pockets, a poop bag dispenser, and includes two food containers and two collapsible bowls. It can be worn as a backpack and its dimensions mean that it is comfortable to do so. This one also comes with a placemat which can be rolled or folded and stored inside the bag when not in use.

If you opt for the gray design, it costs less than the purple bag, too. It is a sturdy bag, rather than one with collapsible sides, and because it retains its shape it is convenient for storing and moving, but something softer might prove more comfortable on the back.

  • Airline compatible
  • Decent price for the gray backpack
  • Includes food storage containers and collapsible bowls
  • Sturdy design not the most comfortable for carrying on the back
  • 7. Tidify Dog Travel Bag

Dog Travel Bag Airline Approved Travel Set

Dog travel bags need to be portable, so they are easy to carry, while still offering enough room to carry whatever you need. The size of the bag you need will ultimately be determined by how many accessories and items your dog takes away, but also by the amount it eats and the length of time you’re going away for.

The Tidify Dog Travel Bag is large, with a 33-liter (8.5-gallon) capacity, and it offers plenty of pockets so that you can organize the items you take, but it is quite cumbersome. It comes with two food containers and two collapsible bowls, and a large front pocket that opens out to provide a feeding mat. It is also reasonably priced, considering what it includes and the size.

The bag includes a first-aid pouch, but this doesn’t include any first-aid items and is really just a pouch with first-aid written on it and a checklist of items to include.

  • Large capacity
  • Good price for the size
  • First-aid pouch doesn’t include any first-aid items
  • May be too large for some
  • 8. Unique Dog Travel Bag

Travel Bag - Dog Traveling Luggage Set

The Unique Dog Travel Bag is something of a luxury travel bag and does cost a little more than most of the alternatives. However, rather than the silicone folding bowls, it has two stainless steel bowls. It also has an elevated dog bowl stand located in the front pocket, and it comes with a first-aid pouch and two food storage containers.

Although stainless steel bowls are better quality than silicone folding bowls, they are very small, and your dog will likely need multiple bowls. Because they are made of metal and don’t fold, they also take up more room than collapsible bowls. The elevated feeder is a unique touch, but it won’t be suitable for aggressive eaters who will easily topple the bowl and cause a mess.

The product is a good idea and has some good features, but it may be more convenient to replace the metal bowls with collapsible ones and ensure that the bag is full when using the elevated feeder.

  • Stainless steel bowls are sturdier than collapsible silicone ones
  • Elevated feeder is good for some dogs
  • Bowls take up more room
  • Bag can fall over when your dog is eating from the elevated bowls
  • 9. Modoker Dog Travel Bag

Modoker Dog Travel Bag

The Modoker Dog Travel Bag has nearly 30 liters (8 gallons) of capacity and multiple pockets, including one bag dispenser. It also has an internal Velcro divider and includes two food storage containers and two collapsible bowls. The travel bag is a little expensive for its size, although you do get all the accessories you need.

Although the bag is sturdy and seems well built, the Velcro divider is prone to moving around and the magnetic pocket sealer also tends to pop open, especially if the bag is full.

  • Includes food containers and collapsible bowls
  • Magnetic pocket catches are prone to popping open
  • Velcro divider is prone to coming loose
  • 10. The Original Doggy Bag Backpack By Rubyloo

The Original Doggy Bag™ Backpack by Rubyloo

If you enjoy taking your dog on day trips or out hiking with you, you will want a backpack that is lightweight and easy to carry. It doesn’t necessarily need the huge capacity that some of the travel bags offer but you can still benefit from the portability of the bag and the convenience of being able to carry food, treats, and other items.

The Original Doggy Bag Backpack by Rubyroo is a backpack with just 18 liters (4.5 gallons) of capacity so it won’t be suitable for weekends away, even, but the single food bag can be used to carry enough for one or two meals, and the two collapsible bowls can be used for water and food. There’s also a treat bag and the backpack has a poop bag dispenser at the bottom, making it easy to grab and go.

The backpack is comfortable and handy for days out, but it is a little expensive for its size and you will want something larger for anything longer than a day out.

  • Easily accessible poop bag dispenser
  • Includes a treat bag
  • Small capacity only suitable for a day out
  • Expensive for its size
  • Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Dog Travel Bags

A dog travel bag is really just a tote bag or a backpack , but it typically includes multiple pockets and maybe an internal wall or compartment that can be used to enhance organization. In most cases, dog travel bags also include collapsible bowls and dog food storage containers, and you can find some that have features like poop bag dispensers or even an elevated feeding platform. Although many of the bags look similar, there are some important features to consider to ensure that you get a bag that is best suited to your requirements and those of your dog.

There are many types of dog travel bags and general bags available, but the two most common and beneficial are the tote organizer and the backpack. These offer decent storage while still being easy to transport.

  • Tote Organizer: The tote organizer tends to be square or rectangular and has a large internal compartment that is used to store the majority of provisions and items. The design of the bag means that it is typically carried in the hand using two handles, although some do include a shoulder strap and may also have backpack-type straps. These usually offer the most carrying capacity and are especially convenient for putting the trunk or sliding under the seat of a plane.
  • Backpack: Backpacks are convenient because they can be slung over one shoulder or strapped over both shoulders, spreading the weight and making them easier to carry. However, what they offer in convenience and comfort, they tend to lose in capacity and organization. Best suited to day trips and if you need to keep your hands free, for example, to carry a puppy or to hold a dog leash, these are portable and convenient.
  • Dimensions & Capacity

Whatever style of bag, you will need to consider the dimensions and capacity of the bag to ensure that it will carry everything you need. At the very least, a dog travel bag will usually be used to carry food, leashes, and a toy or two. It may also carry a dog coat, blanket, water bottle, and food bowls, according to your activities and how long you are packing for. Up to 30 liters (8 gallons) can be considered a good size for a weekend, or perhaps a few days for a smaller dog breed, and if you need more space than this, you might need to consider alternative arrangements or having an additional storage bag for extra food and supplies.

The vast majority of dog travel bags include collapsible bowls. These are silicone and they concertina down to a frisbee shape. They take up very little room in the bag, but they can be small and they won’t last forever. If you do find a bag that includes stainless steel bowls , these bowls are stronger but they don’t fold down, so they take up a lot more room in the bag. They also have to be quite small to fit in the bag so they won’t hold too much food.

  • Food Storage Containers

As well as food bowls, many of the bags include food storage containers . These enable you to store dry food, are usually waterproof, and negate the need to use plastic bags and other storage methods. Many of the bags on our list above include two containers, which means that you can fill one for a short trip and use the rest of the space for additional storage or fill both if you are away for a few days.

  • Poop Bag Dispenser

While food bowls and containers are quite commonplace, one feature that is less prevalent is a poop bag dispenser. These take the place of a small pocket. You can put a roll of poop bags inside and then pull a single bag from the dispenser, as needed, so you don’t have to open the bag and search for the roll every time.

woman holding a used dog poop bag

While most of the bags have large central bags that can be used to hold a selection of items, you will usually find at least one external pocket as well. External pockets are handy for keeping items that you need quick access to, like a leash or treats. And, you can even put your car keys in one of the pockets, as long as it has a zipper or other secure fastening.

  • Do You Need a Dog Travel Bag?

A dog travel bag is really just a standard bag with compartments and other storage solutions, as well as the usual inclusion of travel bowls . If you have a decent backpack or another bag that offers enough room, you don’t really need to buy a separate, dedicated dog travel bag. However, in the same way that a lot of new parents have dedicated changing bags, having a go bag for your dog so that it is ready to travel or head out with you whenever you want, is a good idea.

PK paw divider

There are a surprising number of dog travel bags available, including both tote and backpack designs, and with a wide variety of dimensions and volumes. There are those with travel bowls and even one or two with permanent stainless-steel bowls.

Above, we have included reviews of 10 of the best dog travel bowls and found the Petami Dog Travel Bag to offer the best compromise of capacity and portability at a reasonable price. For value hunters, though, it is the Bundaloo Dog Travel Bag that appeals, although it is quite a small bag and may only be suitable for dogs with small appetites.

Features to consider in dog travel bags

When you travel with your pet, there are a lot of things to consider (and often bring along). No matter how you transport and travel with your pet – whether in a travel crate , a carry bag, in a booster seat or on a leash – it is no secret that you won’t be able to efficiently carry all your pet’s accessories to boot. Food bowls, water bowls, blankets, swimming vests, jackets, or toys: the list can turn out to be quite long and troublesome to pack. A dog travel bag solves all these problems with its pet-oriented ingenious design that anticipates your packing needs and allows you to conveniently store all of your pet’s stuff. With dog travel bags, you’ll have all you need at the tips of your fingers. Whenever you need anything it will be right beside you, and no matter how full the bag is, it will be easier to carry. Travel bags are compact and lightweight and can be carried on any trip – whether by plane, bus, car, or train.

But before you make your purchase, there are some crucial aspects to consider, and all that depends on what you need and want. So here are some important features that you should consider when buying a dog travel bag.

Size is certainly the defining feature of dog travel bags. Depending on your needs, you really need to make a smart purchase and consider the overall size. Too large and you won’t really be able to carry it everywhere and easily, and too small and you won’t fit all the things you need. Careful consideration is needed for a perfect match: large bags are designed for long-distance traveling where you really need to carry all you might need from hygiene products to toys and spare leashes. The small ones are great for everyday use and just the basic necessities you might need on your daily short trips. Think in advance and make the purchase that best suits your needs.

Compartments

An abundance of compartments is one of the most important parts of a travel bag. Different designs will have different numbers of compartments, but one thing is certain – the more the better. You want to be able to store most of your dog-related accessories and to keep them separate and neatly organized at the same time. Dividers keep things easy to reach and return back to their place, minimizing the hassle and mess that comes with travel. While often designed with particular pet accessories in mind, compartments in dog travel bags are still versatile enough that you won’t be limited in your packing choices.

When you are transporting food and water bowls, dirty dog toys, or used blankets, you can’t avoid mucking up your travel bag. And this is all normal when it comes to any type of pet products, as our pooches are not the tidiest creatures on the planet. But that also means that you will have to find a travel bag that can be cleaned easily and often and be able to endure the wear and tear. Machine washable bags are the best solution here, and those materials that are sturdy and durable, and won’t get ruined after the first wash.

Features & perks

Almost all dog travel bags come with a variety of convenient features that vary from brand to brand. The different design solutions are meant to help make traveling with a dog a breeze, so take care to choose those that work the best for you. Some bags come with added food and water bowls that are compact and stored neatly. Others have attached dog toys, or food carriers that will keep your kibble and treats dry and fresh during travel. Many brands opted for adding fluffy blankets as well, both for comfort and emergencies. Either way, you have many options and you can adapt according to those items you lack or need the most.

As it is the case with everything, durability is the key with items such as these. Opting for cheap solutions will result in short term use before you need to get a replacement. And with important accessories such as this one, you really don’t want to risk it and ruin your trip because of luggage malfunction. Choose durable and high-quality items, and look for features that signal sturdiness, such as reinforced stitching or heavy-duty fabric choices. A good travel bag needs to be reinforced on crucial connections, to be adjustable and durable, and to have thick and padded walls. All these add to the longevity of the product, and will also survive all trips and journey well. On plane or bus trips, your travel bag might be tossed in the baggage compartments, and you want to rest assured that in such cases your bag and all the items inside it will remain unscathed. And if you opt for a high-quality travel bag – this will always be the case.

Benefits of dog travel bags

There are some clear benefits to owning a nifty dog travel bag. One of these is its space saving benefit, as well as ease of carrying. No need for complicated and inadequate packing solutions – you can gather all your dog-related items and pack them neat and separate. Avoid plastic bags, backpacks, filled car trunks, and smashed food bowls. A travel bag makes it all compact and easy to reach at all times.

In short, dog travel bags are a great accessory to own if you often travel with your pet. They save you a lot of effort when packing and organize all your dog items for quick use. Re-invent your traveling with a dog – with the help of a travel bag, it will be made so much easier and truly stress-free.

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

What is the Best Type of ID for My Dog While Travelling?

Travelling with our dogs is an exciting experience, but it also comes with responsibility – ensuring they are safe at every turn. Whether you’re heading out on a road trip together, camping with your canine companion by your side, jet-setting on a flight, or hiking your local trails, one of the most critical aspects to consider is proper identification. While traditional ID tags have been a reliable choice and are often seen as the standard ID solution, there are many innovative options for today’s dog parents to choose from.In this article, we’ll explore the significance of dog identification during travel and delve into many of the options available beyond just traditional hang tags. From microchips and QR codes to GPS tracking devices, discover the many ways to keep your pup safe and accounted for on your next adventure. Why is Dog ID Important When Travelling? Before we get into the specifics of different ID options for your pup, let’s start at the beginning. Why is dog ID necessary while travelling, and how can something so simple keep your dog safe? Every dog parent should be aware of the risk of their pup going missing. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 10 million pets go missing every year in the United States. While it is always a frightening experience when a pet goes missing, imagine it happening somewhere far from home that you and your dog aren’t familiar with. You don’t know where they will go or where to start looking. It can happen in the blink of an eye despite taking all precautions. Kennel locks fail, leashes break, and dogs can take off quickly when spooked. Even if your dog is picked up and taken to the local shelter eventually, that is only a piece of the puzzle in bringing them home safely. Without proper identification, the shelter workers have no way of knowing who this dog belongs to, whether they are a stray or someone’s beloved pet, or how to contact you to let you know that they have been found safe. Ensuring your dog has proper ID at all times can make all the difference in whether they are brought home safely.

Dog-Killing Flatworm Discovered in California

Dog-Killing Flatworm Discovered in California

Fleas and ticks aren’t the only parasites that dog owners have to fear in southern California this summer. Scientists from the University of California, Riverside, are warning dog owners to keep their pooches out of the water this summer after they have discovered a potentially deadly parasite.A deadly flatworm species that has previously only existed in Texas and other Golf Coast states, has made its way to the west coast and is now present in the portion of the Colorado River that runs through California. The worm, Heterobilharzia americana, is a flatworm commonly known as the liver fluke. The parasite can cause canine schistosomiasis, an illness that affects the liver and intestine of dogs. Although treatment options are available once the dog becomes infected, they aren’t always effective leaving vets no other option than to euthanize the dog. “Dogs can die from this infection, so we are hoping to raise public awareness that it’s there,” said Adler Dillman, a nematology professor at the University of California, Riverside. “If you’re swimming in the Colorado River with them, your pets are in peril.” After learning about several cases of infection in local dogs, professor Dillman and his research team headed to Blythe, a border town in Riverside County. All of the sick dogs have spent time there, swimming in the river.Since snails are responsible for transmitting the infection, researchers collected more than 2,000 along the banks of the Colorado River. The team used DNA testing to identify the snails and the flatworm. The team was astonished to find not one, but two species of snail that can carry the parasite!“We actually found two species of snail that can support H. americana in the river in Blythe and we found both snails actively shedding this worm,” said Dillman, according to UC Riverside News. “Not only was it a surprise to find H. americana, we also didn’t know that the snails were present here.”The flatworm first makes its way into the snail's body, traveling through its system. Once transformed, it moves out to find a mammal host to infect. Without a host, the parasite can’t survive more than 24 hours on its own. Dogs and raccoons are particularly susceptible to becoming infected after coming into contact with water, whether from drinking or swimming in it. The worm gets inside the veins of the intestinal lining, where it develops into an adult and mates. The presence of adults in the veins isn’t as problematic as the eggs that get into the lungs, spleen, liver, and heart. The dog’s immune system reacts by forming clusters of cells, called granulomas. In time, the organ tissues stop functioning. It may take several months for a dog to show any signs of the infection. Symptoms start slowly and include loss of appetite, and progress to vomiting, diarrhea, profound weight loss, and signs of liver disease. “If your dog has these symptoms after swimming in the Colorado River, it’s a good precaution to ask your veterinarian for a simple fecal test,” said Emily Beeler, a veterinarian with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “Treatment typically involves use of multiple medications and close monitoring of the dog by a veterinarian.”Although potentially deadly for our canine companions, this parasite can’t cause the same issues in humans. “ It can cause swimmers itch, a red rash where it penetrates human skin. But it’s not able to cause an infection,” Dillman explained.Steer clear of bodies of water that could contain infected snails to prevent your pooch from catching flatworms. If your pooch can’t resist taking a dip, monitor them for symptoms of flatworm infection in the weeks afterward. Join the PetGuide community. Great Dane Sets the Largest Litter Record at North Carolina Rescue

Great Dane Sets the Largest Litter Record at North Carolina Rescue

A North Carolina dog gave birth to a litter of puppies and has set a record in the process. Earlier this month, Perfectly Imperfect Pups, a North Carolina foster-based rescue took in a pregnant Great Dane, named Meadow. Two days later, Meadow gave birth to 15 puppies. “It’s the largest litter we have ever seen,” said Nicole Kincaid, the rescue’s founder and director. “We could not believe it when we heard she had 15 puppies, and most of them male! We are so excited for their bright future!”Meadows litter is the largest the rescue has seen since it was founded three years ago. The PIP’s founder and director, Nicole Kincaid, shared that this is also the largest litter she has seen in her 13-year-long rescue career. According to Kincaid, Meadow’s litter is unique for another reason - most of the puppies in the litter are male. “Shockingly enough, we have 12 boys, which is a huge number of boys out of a litter.”PIPs share the news of the record-breaking litter in a Facebook post, writing, “Puppies, puppies, and more puppies! Mamma Meadow and her crew are doing great.”“We are shocked to find out how many puppies she actually had and that all have survived and are doing well,” said Kincaid, according to PEOPLE. “Before being taken in by the Perfectly Imperfect Pups, Meadow had an unsteady past. “She has been passed around to five homes, since giving birth to another litter in February. She was being given away on social media and we reached out, but unfortunately, they gave her away pregnant to someone else.”“Within two days they contacted us and asked if we could still take [Meadow], and of course, we were delighted to take her in,” Kincaid shared. “We got her to our vet the next day, and the day after, she started going into labor.”Meadow is just one of many dogs who had the misfortune of being bounced around from one home to the next. Kincaid shared that this wasn’t Meadow’s fault, saying, “People get a large breed dog, and they don’t realize what they are getting themselves into.”“We are delighted that this will be her final [litter], and her next home will be her forever home,” said Kincaid. “We will also make sure that all 15 puppies go to homes that are experienced with large breed dogs.”For now, Shari Willson, one of the Perfectly Imperfect Pups’ fosters is taking care of Meadow and her pups. The foster mom is supplement feeding the pups in between feedings to make sure all puppies are getting enough food. “Everyone’s gaining weight, everyone’s eating, they are all doing really well,” said Willson.Kincaid praised Meadow’s foster home, saying that her organization “is so proud of our foster parents. They take in dogs without knowing what the next few days or months could bring.”“Taking in a pregnant dog is even more of a challenge because you don’t always know when mom will give birth, how many puppies will be born, or what complications may come along,” she said. The rescue has already received applications and hundreds of messages about adopting Meadow or her puppies when they are old enough to go to their forever homes. All of PIP’s adopters sign a contract in which they commit to taking care of the dog for its entire life and promise to contact the rescue if they can no longer care for them. The rescue’s post-adoption team follows up with the adopters and is available to answer any medical or training-related questions. Mamma Meadow and her pups are going to make wonderful companions and loving dogs to their new families! Join the PetGuide community. Pet Obesity Study Shows Promise and Surprising Links With Humans

Pet Obesity Study Shows Promise and Surprising Links With Humans

If you thought that your chubby doggo is incredibly cute, you might want to consider what’s hiding behind that adorable exterior.  Pet obesity is a real thing, and it is a major health hazard that many dogs experience in their lifetime. And, sadly, a lot of it is connected to improper care and diet. To show us just how big of a problem it has become, the latest study from the  Association for Pet Obesity Prevention revealed that in the U.S. alone, around 59% of dogs and 61% of cats were overweight or obese! However, recently conducted research shows that there might be a way to battle the obesity pandemic – with certain strains of probiotics that can help curb pet obesity, especially when dogs are in question. A research team from Seoul National University's Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, College of Agriculture and Life Science, conducted a study investigating the effects of probiotics on canine obesity. They discovered two strains that appeared to have weight-reducing properties in obese dogs. To assess the probiotic potential of these strains, the researchers employed a lifespan analysis using Caenorhabditis elegans, a genetic model known for its simplicity in genetic manipulation and shorter lifespan compared to other animal models. Their findings were detailed in a  paper published in the Microbiology Spectrum journal. Thanks to the positive outcome of this research, a new hope was discovered for doggos struggling with excess weight. The use of Caenorhabditis Elegans offers “interventions aimed at enhancing metabolic health in various mammals”, according to the research team. What is more, the effects could be applied to cats, humans, and other mammals, since C. Elegans “serves as a human homolog model”. In general, this whole study could prove to be beneficial to several animal species, as well as humans, making its significance multifold. However, the exact way that bacteria affects weight is not entirely understood. Even though some studies show that certain strains will slow weight gain, researchers were still unable to find a connection between bacteria and weight.Nevertheless, the study is proving to be a major leap forward when pet obesity is considered. There is plenty of potential in this study, and further efforts could change the way dog obesity is experienced – or possibly even root it out for good!

More Dogs Than Ever Euthanized as Shelters Hit Capacity

More Dogs Than Ever Euthanized as Shelters Hit Capacity

Each year millions of cats and dogs enter shelters and rescues nationwide. Almost a million more animals have entered and lingered in the nation’s shelters in the last three years, resulting in an ongoing capacity crisis. Last year, 3.2 million dogs entered shelters and rescue organizations nationwide. More than 359,000 dogs were euthanized in 2023, compared to 330,000 cats that were euthanized last year. This marks a four-year peak in non-live outcomes for dogs and the first time the number of dogs euthanized has surpassed the number of euthanized cats.  These heartbreaking findings were published in an annual report of shelter populations compiled by Shelter Animals Count, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization founded in 2012. “Everywhere you turn, the shelters are in crisis,” said the organization’s executive director Stephanie Filer. “It’s truly about an imbalance of animals coming in at faster rates than they’re leaving.”According to Filer, for years cats were considered most at risk because they entered shelters at high rates, but faced low adoption rates. However, focused efforts to reverse these trends are giving results, and the newest data shows a positive shift.“We have seen major positive change,” said Filer. “Adoption rates are high and intakes have decreased, and there are efforts to keep cats at home or in their communities.”Unfortunately, dog programs are suffering, with adoption rates significantly lower than in recent years. “Too many dogs are entering shelters and being left behind,” added Filer, according to USA Today. “Unlike cat adoptions, which continue to increase, dog adoptions have essentially flatlined.”When people think of animal shelters, most imagine scores of large-sized mixed breeds and pit bulls. But in reality, there are purebreds like huskies, French bulldogs, Labradors, and even designer dogs. The one thing no animal advocate thought possible happened - the rates of dog euthanasia surpassed the rates of cat euthanasia for the first time in a long time. “The real reason we’re saying, ‘Wow,’ is that it wasn’t that way for a lot of years. And now it is,” said Filer.More than 6.5 million cats and dogs ended up in U.S. shelters and rescues in 2023. While the number of intakes remained relatively steady, this was the fourth consecutive year of overpopulation. While more dogs were adopted in 2023 than in 2022, the adoption rates were insufficient to meet the demand. The high cost of living, job loss, and housing cost challenges are the main reasons adoption rates aren’t keeping up with animal intake. At the end of 2023, an additional 70,000 cats and 107,000 dogs are waiting for a forever home in one of the many shelters and rescues nationwide. “With more animals entering shelters than leaving, animal welfare organizations and their communities need to continue working together to keep pets in loving homes and out of shelters, including finding ways to increase access to veterinary care and advocating for pet-friendly housing policies,” said Matt Bershadker, president and the CEO of ASPCA.Experts agree that the promotion of shelter adoptions is the best way to solve the ongoing capacity crisis. Adopting an animal from a shelter saves a life, but it also supports the struggling shelters and their staff. Although adopting a cat or a dog from a shelter isn’t possible for everyone, there are other things you can do to help. Volunteering in your local shelter, fostering a pet, or donating are great ways to get involved and help alleviate the shelter crisis.Join the PetGuide community. What Are the Symptoms of Dementia in Dogs?

What Are the Symptoms of Dementia in Dogs?

As the years go by, health issues tend to pile up, even in canines. Old age can bring a range of problems – some doggos have troubles with arthritis and limited mobility, while others suffer from cognitive decline and experience issues such as dementia. That’s right, even dogs can suffer from dementia, which is also known as canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD). This illness can bring about some troubling changes in your pet’s behavior, and it would be wise to be familiar with all the symptoms of dementia, especially if you are a senior dog owner. Let’s go over them and get familiar with the challenges of canine dementia.Doggy Dementia: Symptoms and What To ExpectAs your pet reaches their golden years, some issues are bound to pop up, including dementia. Known as canine cognitive dysfunction, it has similar symptoms to Alzheimer's disease in humans. The main cause is the aging of the dog’s brain, which results in many troubling issues. Of course, CCD doesn’t happen to all old dogs. Latest studies revealed that it only happens to roughly 50% of dogs that are over 11 years old. Of course, if you own a senior doggo, it is wise to get to know the symptoms of dog dementia. Here are some of the most common ones:Confusion and Disorientation:As dementia sets in, your pet might seem suddenly disoriented and awfully confused. They could get lost in spaces that should be all too familiar to them (the house for example), or could just stand and stare blankly into space. Major Sleep Pattern Changes:Dogs tend to have a solid sleep routine. But with dementia, this can suddenly change. They could experience alterations in their sleep-wake cycle, sleep a lot during the day, and become restless and sleepless throughout the entire night.Loss of Interest:Your dog, with dementia, could suddenly become a totally different pet. They could lose all interest in common interactions. They could have zero interest in playing with you or interacting with the family members. The same goes for interacting with other pets, or playing with toys - even if they were their favorites. Forgetting Housetraining:

This App Helps Lost Pets Find a Way Back Home – Already Saving 8,000

PetRadar is a company like no other, helping desperate owners find their missing cherished pets. And now, after successfully reuniting 8,000 missing cats with their owners, the company has expanded to include missing dogs as well.According to the research done by  ASPCA, around 15% of all cats in the USA go missing over a five period. But that is not the worst of it. In just one year, around 10,000,000 dogs go missing in the United States alone. It is a truly alarming statistic, and PetRadar aims to change it for good. David Olthaar is the man behind PetRadar and created his brand almost spontaneously. The idea came to him when he saw a blurry “missing cat” poster on a rainy night. It was almost impossible for that poster to yield results. So he thought that a better way existed, especially in our day and age. And the result is PetRadar and its great success.  "We wanted to use social media ads for good. And what's better than reuniting lost pets with their owners?" David Olthaar said. Thanks to the benefits of the modern digital age, they used sponsored posts on social media to advertise the search for the missing cat in a 1km radius around its last address. The success was near instant. After the first missing cat was found, it became clear just how effective the idea was. "I remember when the first sighting of a lost cat came in. I couldn't believe it. Reuniting them was a beautiful moment. I was even invited for dinner as a thank you!"The idea soon became a major project and a successful worldwide system for finding missing pets. "After finding our 8000th missing cat, I knew we needed to start saving dogs, too!"So, after initially being named CatRadar, the company became PetRadar - expanding on missing dogs as well. And within a week, the first missing doggo had been reunited with his owners. We can only imagine the bright future that lies ahead of this project, and the happy end for many missing pets (and their owners) around the globe.

Can Cats Suffer From Depression?

Can Cats Suffer From Depression?

Does your otherwise playful and friendly cat no longer seem interested in their favorite toys? It’s natural to worry when you notice a change in your best friend’s behavior. Changes in your cat’s mood or activity level may signal that something more serious is happening. We often watch for the warning signs of physical illness, but what about depression? Did you know that your cat can also struggle with their mental health? This article will examine the very real risk of feline depression, including the warning signs, what to do if you suspect your cat may be struggling, and prevention tips. Discover helpful strategies to boost your cat’s mental health and help them get back to their usual playful, purring self today. Can Cats Get Depressed? Cats are known for their independence and aloof attitude, but this doesn’t mean they don’t feel things – sometimes very intensely. Just like people, your cat can suffer from mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression. Not only does depression impact them mentally and emotionally, but it can also affect their physical health and well-being. This is why it’s important for us to acknowledge the risks, identify signs that something is “off,” and seek help for our cats when needed. How Can I Tell if My Cat is Depressed? We all know cats are masters of hiding when they aren’t feeling well. This is why physical illnesses and sicknesses can be so difficult to spot. The same is true for cats who are facing challenges with their mental health. The signs are often subtle, meaning we, as cat parents, must be hyper-vigilant. Some of the more common warning signs to watch out for include: Increased vocalization (constant meowing, yowling)Loss of appetite Unexplained weight loss Sleeping more than usual or at times they’d typically be active Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyedDecreased grooming or attention to hygieneDull, matted coat No longer seeking attention or interaction Out-of-character aggression or irritability Hiding or isolating themselves Many of these signs can also be associated with physical illnesses or diseases. If you notice any of these changes, make an appointment with your veterinarian. They will run tests to rule out any physical health problems before discussing recommendations to help manage your cat’s mental health.

“One-of-a-Kind” Cat With Two Noses Searches for Her Forever Home

“One-of-a-Kind” Cat With Two Noses Searches for Her Forever Home

As rescue cat parents and rescue advocates, we know firsthand that every cat has a unique story to tell. But some cats truly stand out and make their mark on the world. Nanny McPhee, a rescue cat who recently came into the care of the Cats Protection Warrington Adoption Centre. It’s not the way this sweet girl came into the shelter or her life before that has everyone talking… It’s a VERY unique physical feature – her nose, or “noses,” in her case! The sweet kitty lived in a loving home for the first four years of her life. Unfortunately, her previous owner had to make the difficult decision to contact a rescue due to health and financial reasons. When Nanny McPhee first arrived at the rescue, volunteers and rescue workers noticed a few things about the tuxedo kitty. First, she was a very gentle lady with a love for attention.“She has proven to be a gentle lady who adores a fuss and a cuddle, and we are hopeful her new-found fame will mean she will have no shortage of potential adopters,” shared shelter manager Lindsay Kerr. “She really does deserve a home where she can settle down and become the center of a loving family.” Second, they noticed she had a surprisingly large nose. It was this unique feature that led to her being named after the popular children’s character. But that signature sniffer was hiding an even bigger secret. A check-up with a local veterinarian revealed that the cat had not one but TWO noses, creating the appearance of one large snout. When asked about the discovery, senior field veterinary officer Fiona Brockbank explained that it was the first time they had seen this but that the cat’s unique appearance resulted from a congenital malformation. Other more common examples of this include cleft palates or cleft lips. These conditions can be inherited or caused by an incident during development in utero.

The Latest Pet Industry Trends from Global Pet Expo 2024

The Latest Pet Industry Trends from Global Pet Expo 2024

On March 20-22, 2024, pet industry professionals from across the globe gathered at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, for the Global Pet Expo. Presented by the American Pet Products Association (APPA) and the Pet Industry Distributors Association (PIDA), the exhibit floor showcased 1,100+ companies, including 300 first-time exhibitors. This included 1,000+ product launches, the latest pet industry news, a packed New Products Showcase, and more! But what did we discover while attending the show? Here are some of the hottest trends in the industry, as seen at this year’s show: Mind the BudgetIn the last decade, we have seen a growing interest in spoiling our pets regardless of the cost. However, following the events of 2020, many pet parents are feeling the pinch that is society’s current financial state. So, how do we reconcile the two? Many brands came into this year’s show with a focus on providing high-quality pet care with a budget-friendly mindset. This included two distinct approaches. Some companies focused on finding ways to keep the price point low. This included changes to production, simplified designs, and sourcing quality supplies at a fraction of the cost. They then transferred these savings directly to the consumer, allowing you to spoil your pets without breaking the bank. The other trend we saw was to create premium products that, while requiring an upfront investment, are designed to last for years to come. By not having to replace them repeatedly, you will save money over the product's lifespan. Overall, we were excited to see so many ways pet parents can improve their pet’s quality of life, even when finances are tight. Sustainability for the Future A growing understanding of the impact of our pets on the environment has put pressure on the pet industry to find ways to prioritize sustainability. Some experts say that caring for a medium-sized dog can have a similar carbon footprint to driving a large SUV. How do we address this without giving up our pets? We saw several brands rising to the challenge! There was a growing number of companies creating adorable and functional toys from recycled materials. Snugarooz had a wide assortment of brightly colored, crinkly, and squeaky plush toys made from recycled water bottles. WestPaw added more products to their popular Seaflex line of 100% recyclable toys made with recycled ocean-bound plastic. We also saw a focus on sustainability in pet food and treats. One company that really stood out was Arch Pet Food. The company previously demonstrated their commitment to eco-friendly pet ownership by introducing alternative proteins in their food and treats. One product that we found very impressive was the Dehydrated Copi treats, made from an invasive species in our waterways. Other shifts towards sustainability included changes in packaging to reduce unnecessary plastics, the use of hemp-based bedding for small animals, and more sustainable decisions being made during production.

Why is My Rabbit Eating Poop and How Do I Stop It?

Why is My Rabbit Eating Poop and How Do I Stop It?

It’s a weird and uncomfortable habit, but if your rabbit is eating poop, it may not be a sign of health issues! In fact, for rabbits, eating poop may actually be a healthy decision (even if we’d prefer not to see it).In this article, we’re diving into the mystery of why rabbits eat poop, including why you may want to let your rabbit engage in this “cringey” habit. Plus, we’ll look at the warning signs that something is, indeed, off and when you should contact your veterinarian.Let’s get started…Is it Normal for a Rabbit to Eat Their Poop?Obviously, seeing your rabbit eating their own feces isn’t something any rabbit parent enjoys. If this is your first time seeing your rabbit engaging in this behavior, it may even cause serious concerns. What could possibly be so wrong with your rabbit’s system that they would feel tempted to do that? You may be surprised to learn that this is incredibly common and, in many cases, a regular part of their digestive process. By eating a specific type of poop, they ensure that they are getting (and keeping) all the nutrients that they need to support a healthy, happy life. The idea of chowing down on our own waste is disgusting to us. But for our furry friends, this is a normal part of their daily routine. Rabbit Poop vs Cecotropes To better understand the connection between poop eating and your rabbit’s health, we need to learn about the different types of rabbit waste. More specifically, we need to know about cecotropes. When we go to the bathroom, we have one type of solid waste – a material we couldn’t imagine getting near, let alone making into a meal. Rabbits, however, pass two different types of droppings. The first is fecal waste or poop. If your rabbit has a healthy, functioning digestive system, these will be small, round, dry, ball-like pellets that are light brown. This is often found in your rabbit’s litter box (if they are litter-trained) or the bottom of their cage. The second and the most important type of droppings are cecal pellets or cecotropes. These have the appearance of a small bunch of grapes with several round pellets clumped together. They are shiny, coated in mucus, and usually dark brown/mulberry color. The mucus is sticky, which could cause the cecotropes to pick up a layer of hay, wood shavings, or fur from their environment. While feces is the body’s way of discarding everything your body doesn’t need from your food, aka the ‘waste,’ cecotropes are a little different. These pellets contain partially digested foods that passed through your rabbit’s system without the nutrients being absorbed the first time. They are packed with nutrients as well as helpful bacteria and fungi that support a healthy gastrointestinal system. When you see a rabbit eating their waste, they are usually eating these cecotropes. This allows them to absorb the much-needed nutrients that would otherwise be lost.

Lost Dog Rescued After Surviving Six Years Alone in the Woods

Lost Dog Rescued After Surviving Six Years Alone in the Woods

A senior dog found living in the woods in the U.K. has been rescued and is now looking for a loving home. The dog, named Rose, was first spotted near Crawley Down in West Sussex, England. The Lost Dog Recovery UK South shared in a social media post that they’ve received a message from a concerned member of the public about a small black dog running in the road. The person who saw the dog “stopped the traffic” and let the pooch disappear into the woods, knowing it’s best not to follow. After visiting the nearest property, the person learned that locals were familiar with the dog and that drivers often stopped by saying that the pooch had been on the road. The locals explained that the dog was a stray fed by people. The individual who spotted the dog was troubled by the idea of a dog living in the woods and contacted the Lost Dog Recovery rescue organization with this information. Knowing that this could be a case of an “owned dog allowed to roam” the organization decided to investigate by setting out food for the pooch along with cameras to track its movements. The dog was caught on camera five times in two days and by the third day appeared to be waiting for meals. The organization also talked with residents in the area about the dog and were told that the dog was a stray who lived locally for about ten years. The residents also said that the dog should be left alone because was in good condition, fed, and cared for. After talking about this situation with another household, which has been leaving food for wildlife and were allegedly responsible for the dog’s care, the rescue decided to help the dog. Over the following week, the organization established a feeding schedule and confirmed that the pooch was indeed a senior dog. They set a trap for the dog by serving a warm roast chicken and managed to catch her.“Understandably she was shocked and scared, but very gentle, and was taken immediately to the warmth and safety of kennels,” the organization shared.  After taking her to the kennels, the organization made a shocking discovery - the dog was microchipped! Her name was Rose and she had gone missing from her owners less than 24 hours after they adopted her in 2017! A now 12-year-old Patterdale terrier, Rose, has gone missing from Ashurst Woods, located only six miles away from Crawley Down, where the organization found her. Unfortunately, there was no happy reunion for Rose. The organization managed to contact Rose’s registered owners, but they explained that they were in no position to take her back since their circumstances had changed dramatically and they had moved away. “After the initial shock, our absolute joy at finding a long-lost dog is tinged with sadness as there is no happy reunion for Rose; she never got the chance to know the love of her family,” the organization said in a post. They added that Rose is going to need time, patience, and rehabilitation, and being a senior dog she’ll likely need ongoing vet care and medication. Rose is going to be cared for by Last Chance Animal Rescue in Edenbridge, U.K. After sharing Rose’s story, the rescue received several inquiries about her from families willing to adopt her and give her a safe, warm, and loving home.“Please don’t leave a dog straying for longer than they have to be...not only for them and their wellbeing but also for the sake of humans who love them,” the organization added. Join the PetGuide community. Common features include ventilation windows, sturdy handles, detachable shoulder straps, a secure closure system, and often a waterproof base.
