The Ultimate Packing List for Europe: Spring Edition (+ What to Wear)

If there’s one thing we’ve learned about putting together the perfect packing list for Europe in spring, it’s to always expect it to be both colder and rainier than you hope for… especially if, like us, you hail from a climate where summer weather starts sneaking into the calendar as early as March or April.

It’s not all bad news, though–March, April, and May are wonderful months to travel in Europe!

Delectable farmer’s markets, adorable small towns decked out for Easter, coastlines that are slowly waking up from their winter hiatus and aren’t crowded yet, and blooming flowers everywhere you look are just a few of the fun things to see during spring in Europe!

And, after many springs spent hopping around the continent, we have plenty of ideas on how to put together the perfect spring packing list for Europe (many of which come from learning from our mistakes).

We’ve rounded up everything you need to pack for Europe in the spring here–plus some advice on what to wear.

While we talk mostly in general terms about packing for spring in Europe here, it’s of course important to remember that the continent has a wide variety of landscapes and weather patterns to offer!

Spring in the south of Europe is a totally different temperature than more northern parts of Europe, and the best things to wear in Scotland in March will of course be wildly different than what to wear in Sicily in May.

This packing list is designed to cover packing for Europe in March, April, and May, with an emphasis on visiting central and southern Europe.

Think strolling the streets of Paris, visiting the castles of Germany, or eating your way through Rome –that’s what this guide to what to wear in Europe in spring is designed for.

You will be prepared for spring showers and cold snaps, as well as bright sunny spring days.

Of course, always be sure to carefully check the weather in the destinations you’re planning to visit as your trip gets closer, but this spring packing list for Europe will provide a great jumping-off point for deciding what to bring (and what to leave behind).

All of the photos of Jeremy and me in this blog post were taken throughout Europe in March, April, or May–and as you can see, that has called for everything from peacoats to sundresses depending on the trip!

(Planning a trip to Europe in a different season? We also have packing lists for visiting Europe in the summer , fall , and winter !)

Passport — If you’re traveling internationally, your passport is an absolute must: there’s no point in packing for Europe in the spring without it!

Travel Insurance — No one like to think about the possibility of canceled or interrupted trips, let alone accidents on the road.

Anything can happen while traveling, though–and that’s where travel insurance can help.

Check travel insurance policy inclusions and prices with Safety Wing  for your trip here.

Visa (If Needed)  — Though 26 countries in Europe are part of the Schengen Zone that allows many nationalities (including US citizens, Canadians, and Australians) to enter and travel freely between their countries for 90 days for tourism, that still leaves around half of Europe’s countries that are  not  part of this agreement.

Regardless of where you are from, always double-check entrance requirements before showing up at the airport to fly to any European country (or any country at all that isn’t your own, for that matter).

Money  — We recommend bringing two credit cards (one to use, and one to keep as a backup), and two debit cards. Ideally, bring cards with no foreign transaction fees.

We’ve never felt it necessary to obtain currency before arriving (we just withdraw from an ATM when we get there), but you can purchase most currencies in your home country if it makes you feel more comfortable.

Keep in mind that not all countries in Europe are on the Euro, so be sure to double-check what currency you’ll need based on your itinerary!

International Driving Permit — If you are visiting Europe this spring from outside the EU and plan to rent a car, you may need an International Driving Permit to do so!

Italy is particularly well-known for enforcing this requirement.

Be sure to check the rental requirements in any country that you plan to drive in before you arrive!

Camera — We use a Sony a7R III  and absolutely  adore  it, but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

Be sure to check the requirements for the particular countries you visit–the United Kingdom, for example, is well-known for using different plugs than most of the continent.

Apple Air Tags — Air Tags are a relatively new addition to our Europe packing list, but we’ve absolutely loved having the extra security when checking out luggage! They’ll be coming with us from now on.

They’re incredibly handy and we recommend adding one to your packing list for Europe this spring.

We’ve been carrying ours for years and it still comes in handy constantly and is holding up perfectly!

Comfortable Day Bag — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable.

Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

An umbrella is a must-have on a spring trip to Europe, and by buying a dedicated travel umbrella before you leave, you’ll end up with a much higher quality umbrella than if you buy one from a street vendor once it starts pouring.

Student ID  — If you’re a student, you’ll be entitled to lots of discounts on museums and attractions throughout Europe.

Be sure to add it to your packing list for Europe (but do keep in mind that some student discounts are only available to travelers studying in the EU–double-check before counting on the discounts!).

Kate Storm and Jeremy Storm on a balcony overlooking Positano

Cell Phone  — We spent more than a year traveling without working cell phones, just relying on wifi… and while that’s completely fine, we would never go back

Consider purchasing an international plan for your cell phone (most carriers offer them), or, if you have an unlocked phone, you can just buy a local SIM card once you land in Europe.

You can also buy EU SIM cards online before you go, though it’s not strictly necessary!

You’ll want to structure your personal wardrobe for traveling in Europe based on where you’re going, of course.

A glamorous trip to Rome calls for different clothes than hiking in Iceland or soaking up the first rays of sun in Greece–but if you’re looking for a great all-in-one spring packing list for Europe, this is it!

Sprin g in Europe is a really special time, places that close down for winter start opening up and preparing for the summer season and the weather starts to have more warm sunny days than cooler.

These picks reflect my personal favorite things to wear in Europe in the spring.

kate storm and ranger storm in menerbes luberon valley france

I love wearing dresses in Europe in the spring (and year-round, frankly)!

They’re easy to pack, easy to wear, look great just about anywhere you go, and manage to look pulled together while only requiring one piece of clothing.

When it is a little colder you can add tights and a jacket , layers are key in spring in Europe!

Dresses like this and this are generally what you’ll find me in when traveling through Europe in the spring. Be sure to bring at least one or two maxi dresses ( I love this one , for example), which fulfill the double purpose of being extremely photogenic while allowing you to visit religious sites like churches and mosques without issue.

kate storm in a floral dress visiting one of the patios of cordoba during a spain vacation

Simple blouses like this are perfect for most places in the fall in Europe.

Be sure to also bring a sweater or two along–thinner ones are easier to pack and layer, so keep that in mind when shopping. Something like this is a great option.

A Europe packing list for spring absolutely requires a pair of jeans–I’m obsessed with this pair and had them for years, but am branching out with straight-legged jeans now after a decade of skinny jeans.

If it’s not quite warm enough for shorts so jeans are a perfect low-maintenance polished option.

If you prefer wearing pants, you might also like to bring an additional pair of jeans–black ones like these are a great way to mix things up.

If you are like me and prefer to wear dresses and skirts more often than not, a cute skirt like this layered with tights is a fashionable and comfortable choice for your Europe spring packing list.

It also provides you with options if it is warmer, then you can forgo the tights.

Bathing Suits

Depending on if you’re planning to visit some warmer beach destinations, I’d pack 2-3 bathing suits for visiting Europe in the spring. I love choices like this and this .

If you’re planning on trying out any active water activities like snorkeling or scuba diving, consider packing at least one one-piece suit , too.

The absolute most important rule when determining what shoes to put on your packing list for Europe this spring is making sure that they’re comfortable to walk in!

I’ve been wearing these white sneakers in Europe during the spring lately and love them, and this pair is another longtime favorite of mine.

Boat shoes are also a great option, and Converse are popular with backpackers and travelers along the tourist trail.

You might also prefer to bring a pair of boots, evenings can still be cold so you will be thankful for something drier and warmer than sneakers! Something like this is perfect.

kate storm in a blue dress in the monastery of sao vicente, one of the best places in lisbon off the beaten path

Spring in Europe is the optimal time to plan for layers.

We once visited the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre during an unseasonably cold and rainy May… and we were so glad we had brought layers!

A light jacket like this is also a great option paired with an umbrella in your bag.

If you’re heading to outdoor-focused, more rainy places like Ireland or Scotland, you’ll also want to pack a rain jacket .

Kate in a long blue skirt standing in front of a building in Goult with green shutters. Wisteria is blooming on the building. Don't miss visiting Goult during your south of France itinerary!

Accessories

Sunglasses are essential for traveling in Europe during the spring, that hazy spring sun can be strong!

You can either purchase them ahead of time or plan on picking them up as souvenirs.

Cheap sunglasses are sold on just about every corner in Europe, and designer sunglasses from European brands are generally far cheaper within the EU (I once paid under 200 Euro for a pair of Valentino glasses listed on Saks’ website for $400).

Scarves are also great for having handy if it gets chilly and to layer over a light jacket.

kate storm jeremy storm and ranger storm visiting one of the beaches near lisbon portugal

Fitted, casual shirts like this and light sweaters like this are both great options for men when packing for Europe in the spring.

Casual slacks or chinos like these are a versatile and easy option for your spring in Europe packing list.

We recommend bringing at least one pair of fitted jeans like these  as well.

jeremy storm at cais do sodre train station in lisbon portugal

Jeremy tends to opt for light, casual shoes like these during spring in Europe–whatever you pack, just make sure that they’re well broken in and easy to walk in for hours before adding them to your spring packing list for Europe!

Subtle boots like these or classic shoes like these are both good options.

Bathing Suit

If you’re planning on hitting warmer beach destinations in Europe this spring, make sure to bring one or two bathing suits along with you. Suits like this work perfectly.

Depending on the weather for your trip to Europe, you may not need a heavy jacket at all when visiting Europe in the spring.

Jeremy is comfortable in this jacket all the way through most of March, April, and May in Europe , give or take additional layers.

jeremy storm and ranger storm in lacoste france

I use them on all boats and the occasional bus, and if things get really bad, take some Non-Drowsy Dramamine as well.

Trust me–you don’t want to miss out on the joys of boating around the Mediterranean due to seasickness!

kate storm and jeremy storm on the bow of a boat bound for a day trip to Capri

True, it’s a bit of a pain to carry and not advised in busy areas, but the memories are priceless and the photos you end up with are generally  so  much better than the ones you get by asking a stranger to snap a photo for you.

We’ve never regretted adding our own over-the-counter meds to our Europe packing list.

ULTIMATE Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Important Note : This post may contain affiliate links which means if you click through and make a purchase I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you!

But before we get onto the specific items we put in our favorite spring travel capsule wardrobe, we first thought it would be a good idea to tell what is a travel capsule wardrobe is, why you should pack one and where it can be used.

Table of Contents

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

To know what a Spring travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe actually is!

Generally speaking a travel capsule wardrobe is a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists , and thus preventing you from overpacking .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Now depending on the length of your travels or vacation, the time of year you are traveling and the destination will depend on how many items should be included in your capsule wardrobe. However in my opinion the less the better. But be sure to pack enough so you don’t have to do laundry or buy new items at your destination.

Some ways we create out capsule wardrobes are using the following packing methods:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method)
  • . 4 x 4 packing method

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe

woman looking at cherry blossoms in spring

So now you know what a travel capsule wardrobe is we will look at capsule wardrobe for Spring in particular.

Our Spring packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Spring months of March, April and May in places associated with typical Spring weather. This means Europe, Asia in places like Japan to see the cherry blossoms and of course the USA and Canada.

Note : if you are traveling to the Southern hemisphere Spring is catagorized as September, October and November.

And if you are traveling at another time of year of for a specific type of vacation be sure to check out our other capsule wardrobe packing lists for more specific guidance:

  • Beach Vacation Capsule Wardrobe
  • Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • River Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • Safari Capsule Wardrobe.

So now you know what a Spring travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe I always start making my wardrobe in the same way using a couple of considerations these are:

Color palettes

pink spring clothes flat lay

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

Now obviously monochrome is the easiest capsule wardrobe to make as you are so limited in colors. However I find this makes my vacation photos look a bit boring, especially in Spring.

When I put together my own Spring capsule wardrobe I always gravitate towards pastels and florals. This is especially true when I am traveling to see flower such as Kyoto in Spring for cherry blossom season or to see the tulips in Keukenhof Gardens in Amsterdam in April .

My favorite color palettes for a Spring capsule wardrobe are:

  • baby blues.

But this is very much a personal choice and you should pick a color palette that you feel comfortable in.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times. This is why I like the sudoku method as it is the easiest method of laying out outfits.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Spring capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Spring weather. As such we do make considerations for wet weather. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get heat waves and cold snaps even in Spring. If this happens to you be sure to check our other seasonal capsule wardrobes such as our Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe and our Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe .

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. To check your destination and time of travel head to the search function on the top of this page and type your destination and month of travel (i.e. Venice May or Italy April ). This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

Couple looking at cherry blossoms in Spring

So now you know the principles of how to put together a Spring travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include no matter the destination:

Best Pants for your spring Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only. They also work well for nights out where you want smarter trousers.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Although we don’t normally have pairs of jeans as part of our summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential for any Spring packing list. We recommend picking a lighter weight pair if you are traveling in May though as the weather warms up.

But in regards to color I tend to move away from the black jeans I wear in Winter and pick a lighter wash pair. However it is worth noting if you are traveling to Europe in Spring, that you will still want a more tailored pair to fit more in with local style.

Dress / Skirt

BTFBM Women Summer Bohemian Floral Casual Wrap V Neck Ruffle Cap Sleeveless Belt A-Line Pleated Hem Swing Midi Sun Dress (Pink, l)

As you transition into Spring from your Winter attire, you will want to change the skirts and dresses you wear. I usually move away from sweater dresses to wrap dresses. But I still wear them with tights in March.

A dress that can be used for sightseeing in the day but that can also be dressed up at night is a great addition to the capsule wardrobe. Especially if you can add splashes of color with accessories such as jewelry and pashminas.

Click here to shop Spring dresses.

Best Tops for Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your Spring travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain white tee.

For Spring I tend to pack more short sleeve t shirts as opposed to long sleeve ones.

Click here to shop basic tee shirts.

Note: For Europe in Spring I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your Spring outfit combos. But also they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Amazon Essentials Women's Fluid Twill Short Puff Sleeve Smock Detail Shirt, Raspberry Red Floral, X-Large

For Spring travel I always have a printed blouse with a 3/4 length sleeve with me. These are great for places with dress codes such as Churches in Italy , the Vatican and Sagrada Familia to name a few.

And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

I like to have a patterned blouse as the pants I pack are plain, a patterned top is a great way of adding some texture, color and detail.

Click here to shop printed and patterned blouses.

As well as a blouse, I also like to have a button down shirt with me. Now depending on when in Spring I am traveling, the weather and activities I am doing will depend on the shirt I pack.

However for the most versatile shirt to pack, you really can’t go wrong with an over sized white button-up shirt or with a linen blouse.

Click here to shop shirts for travel.

Best Layers for your Spring Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel however these are especially important in Spring when there is changeable weather. I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel which in Spring usually consists of:

Lueluoye Chunky Crochet Cardigan for Women Long Sleeve Waterfall Open Front Knit Cardigans Sweaters White XXL

A cardigan is essential for this time of year as it can be layered on top of blouses, tops, t shirts and dresses.

You can choose the color based on the palette you have in your wardrobe.

Click here to shop cardigans for Spring.

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Long-Sleeve V-Neck Tunic Sweater (Available in Plus Size), Pink, Large

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

Best Jackets for Spring Travel

Leather jacket.

Tanming Women's Removable Hooded Faux Leather Jackets (X-Large, Black)

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

Click here to shop leather jackets for travel.

Waterproof Jacket

Columbia Women's Switchback Lined Long Jacket, Black, Large

Spring in the northern hemisphere has notoriously changeable weather which includes showers! As such having a lightweight waterproof jacket is a good idea for Spring travel. My favorite type is a waterproof trench.

Click here to shop jackets for travel.

Shoes for Spring Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack. However for Spring I recommend packing just two pairs of shoes. They are:

ECCO Women's Soft 7 Sneaker, White, 7-7. 5

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. BUt ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing. However my favorite sneakers of the moment are the Addidas Cloud Foam . These are white sneakers which are very versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe but also are very comfortable for walking long distances.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Ankle Boots for March

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for travel in March. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

Shop ankle boots here.

However for April and May I would pack a sandal in stead dependent on the forecast and specific location of course.

I usually opt for a sandal over a boot for travel in Late April or May. I only ever pick sandals with good arch support that can cope with long sightseeing days though.

Best Accessories for your Spring Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Spring travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Spring travel accessories include:

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect Spring capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

Travelon Women's Messenger Bag, Black, One Size

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in European cities such as Rome and Barcelona which do have pickpocket problems.

I find these types of bags give me a bit more peace of mind when traveling as they make it harder for pickpockets to get into. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop crossbody bags here.

Note: a tote bag is also handy for souvenir shopping too.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo. Let’s face it who hasn’t posed at a famous landmark with a hand on their hat?

We like the floppy wide brimmed hats in a color that complements rather than matches your capsule wardrobe colors is what I would suggest

Click here to shop Spring hats for travel.

We hope this has helped you put together your own Spring Capsule travel wardrobe! And we would love to hear about what you pack for Spring in the comments belows

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe minimalist

In this Article

Fine. I’ll admit it. I’m a chronic overpacker. Actually, a reformed overpacker.  Thanks to the streamlining powers of a spring travel capsule wardrobe, I now pack what I need and leave the rest.

If you’re ready to do the same, the spring wardrobe essentials below are just what you need. Learn how to build your travel capsule wardrobe and explore example closets for weekend, 10-day, and 2-week trips.

WHAT IS A SPRING TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

A spring travel capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully selected group of versatile clothing items designed to mix and match effortlessly, providing you with a range of stylish outfits for your trip . Typically consisting of 10-30 pieces, a travel capsule wardrobe includes essentials like breezy tops, comfortable bottoms, and light (wrinkle-resistant) outerwear suitable for milder weather.

Embracing a capsule wardrobe  helps you avoid overpacking while guaranteeing you have what you need for chic outfits. What could be better?

WHY BUILD A SPRING TRAVEL WARDROBE

As a frequent traveler, I’ve experienced the challenges of packing all too often. Here’s how a spring travel capsule helps:

Benefit 1: Simple packing process . Packing becomes a breeze when you have a curated set of clothing that effortlessly complements each other.

Benefit 2: Less luggage to carry . Embracing a spring travel capsule wardrobe means saying goodbye to unneeded clothing and bulky suitcases. Enjoying the freedom of traveling light. Well, lighter.

Benefit 3: Effortless outfit building . Capsules are built to mix and match. The result? Each combination you pull out is a winner. Trust me, it’s a game-changer for effortless and chic outfit choices.

Need a simple packing process?  Check out my travel capsule wardrobe steps here.

HOW TO BUILD A SPRING TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE

Consult your itinerary.

First things first-  look at your travel plans and the expected weather at your destination. Consider the activities you have in mind, whether it’s exploring cities, hiking, or enjoying beachside strolls.

My advice – break your planned activities down to learn how you’ll be spending the bulk of your trip. Then use this to inform what you’ll bring.

SELECT YOUR COLOR PALETTE

Even a minimalist spring travel capsule benefits from a carefully chosen color palette that aligns with your style. For the spring season, soft greens, blues, and floral prints look lovely.

But you know yourself best so select hues that complement your skin tone.

Need help? Here are  6 ways to choose a color palette that suits you .

minimalist capsule wardrobe

CREATE YOUR CORE TRAVEL CLOSET

Now, let’s delve into the essential elements of a spring travel capsule wardrobe.

Build your core closet by focusing on three key sections: foundational, mid-layer, and outerwear.

Select Foundational Pieces:  Begin with breezy and comfortable undergarments, opting for lightweight tops and breathable materials. Include items like airy tees, polished trousers, and comfortable shorts as part of your foundational layer, providing the necessary comfort for springtime activities.

Select Mid-Layer Pieces:  Elevate your ensemble with stylish mid-layer pieces such as lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and versatile blouses. These items offer just the right amount of warmth for cooler spring evenings. Choose pieces that can transition easily from day to night.

Select Outerwear Pieces:  Given the unpredictable nature of spring weather, incorporate a mix of light outerwear options into your capsule wardrobe. Think about essentials like trench coats, denim jackets, or stylish windbreakers. That way, you’re prepared for varying conditions.

CREATE OUTFITS

One thing I won’t shut up about is how versatile capsule wardrobes are. Now that you have pieces, mix and match them to create outfit options for different activities. Casual outfits are a must. A few dressy ensembles are also needed. Hiking, events, swimming, and other activities may call for other looks. So use this time to build.

TEST YOUR CAPSULE

Before finalizing your packing, try on the outfits you’ve planned. Ensure each piece feels comfortable and suits the vibe you’re aiming for during your spring travels. If something doesn’t quite fit, swap it out. While the edit phase may not be mandatory, it’s a valuable step, especially if you’re new to spring travel capsule wardrobes.

2-Week Capsule Packing List

Bottoms (6):, outerwear (4):, how do you pack for a spring trip in a carry-on.

If the thought of fitting all your spring essentials into a modest carry-on seems daunting, fear not. Here are my tips for effortless spring packing.

STEP 1: MAP OUTFITS TO ACTIVITIES

Commence your packing journey with a clear understanding of the activities and events that will fill your spring days. Whether it’s strolling through blooming gardens, exploring city streets, or enjoying al fresco dining, tailor your wardrobe to accommodate each scenario.

STEP 2: CREATE LAYER LEVELS

Maximize space by planning a three-tier layering system in your suitcase:

  • Base Level: Lightweight tops and shorts or skirts.
  • Mid Level: Sweaters, blouses, and tops.
  • Outerwear: Jackets, blazers, and vests.

I followed a similar pattern when packing  my Hawaii capsule wardrobe  – but with fewer outerwear pieces.

STEP 3: ROLL SMALL, FOLD LARGE

Optimize space by rolling your smaller clothes instead of folding them. Not only does this save room, but it also minimizes wrinkles in your fabrics. For larger items like jeans and coats, folding will be a better use of space. You can get the rundown on how to  fold for maximum space saving here .

Follow these and you’ll breeze through your spring travels with a stylish and compact carry-on.

HOW MANY PIECES SHOULD BE IN A SPRING TRAVEL WARDROBE?

When crafting your spring travel wardrobe, the ideal number of pieces depends on the duration of your trip. To pack enough spring wardrobe essentials to fit your journey, follow this guide:

Weekend Getaway (2-4 days) : Opt for a slim spring travel capsule wardrobe ranging from 10-15 pieces.

10-Day Trip:  Aim for a slightly expanded capsule of 12-18 pieces for a 10-day adventure.

Two-Week Adventure:  For a more extended two-week expedition, consider a capsule wardrobe within the range of 20-25 pieces.

TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FAQS

The 5-4-3-2-1 capsule is a minimalist approach to packing that provides a simple wardrobe for a trip. The breakdown is:

  • 5 Tops : Include a combination of tops such as shirts, blouses, sweaters, or T-shirts. These should be versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched.
  • 4 Bottoms:  Choose four bottoms, which can include pants, skirts, or shorts. Aim for variety and versatility to complement the selected tops.
  • 3 Dresses or Jumpsuits:  Opt for three dresses or jumpsuits that can be dressed up or down for different occasions.
  • 2 Outerwear Pieces:  Select two outerwear items, such as jackets, cardigans, or blazers, to provide layering options for varying weather conditions.
  • 1 Pair of Shoes:  Limit your shoe selection to one versatile pair that complements the chosen outfits and suits the activities planned.

Spring packing may involve lighter layers, but bulky items can still be managed:

  • Vacuum-Sealed Bags:  If you will have access to a vacuum hose at your Airbnb or hotel, then use one to compress items like sweaters or jackets, maximizing space in your carry-on.
  • Wear Bulky Items:  Put on your chunky shoes or a light jacket when heading to the airport. While it may be a minor inconvenience during security checks, it frees up valuable space in your luggage.

TRAVEL STYLE

Wardrobe basics combine to create stylish and comfortable outfits for a spring vacation

I really struggle with packing so decided that the simplicity of a spring capsule wardrobe could be the answer to traveling light and looking stylish on a spring getaway.

I’ve scoured my favorite retailers, as well as my own closet, to come up with a simple yet chic collection of spring BFF’s (best fashion friends) – pieces that will carry us stylishly through a week in Paris, Prague or Pasadena.  I believe a capsule wardrobe can work for anyone. By choosing a combination of classic pieces, and adding a few accents, you can mix to maximum outfit effect this spring.

Even better, I’ve created this spring capsule wardrobe to fit into a carry-on bag, if you wish to travel light. I recently traveled with a carry-on to Europe and it was wonderful to not have to worry about a missing checked bag.

Finally, since these pieces are mostly versatile classics, you will turn to them again and again at home as well.

25+ Chic Outfits with 15 Pieces

A woman wears 12 different outfits from her spring capsule wardrobe of 15 pieces. Colors are mostly navy, white, pink and a couple of black items.

Spring Travel Capsule Wardrobe - The Pieces

CROPPED JEANS ~ MAXI SKIRT ~ TROUSERS ~ BLAZER ~ CARDIGAN SWEATER ~ PULLOVER SWEATER ~  COTTON SHIRT (long-sleeved) ~ COTTON SHIRT (short-sleeved) ~ T-SHIRTS ~ TANK  ~ DRESS ~ TRENCH COAT

MULE LOAFERS ~  SLIDE SANDALS ~ SNEAKERS

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Color Palette

For spring, I chose navy and white. From there, I layered in colorful pieces: a dress and skirt in shades of pink, and a green scarf. I also added two black basics. That created a spring wardrobe with enough color to make it interesting but it was still easy to combine the pieces.

Does it have to be colorful? No. Color or neutrals — your choice. The one exception is a safari where it’s better to stick to neutrals. See What to Wear on Safari.

To create a color palette, start with neutrals, then layer in color. Colors can vary by personal preference and the season. (If you’ve found your way here in fall, explore my Autumn Capsule Wardrobe for Travel .)

In the photos below, you will see the spring capsule with the navy and white items and then with the colorful pieces added in.

A capsule wardrobe for spring starts with a neutral palette of navy and white. Pictured are a flat lay of navy blazer, denim jeans, blue and white scarf, white shirt, navy cotton cardigan sweater, striped sweater and striped mariniere tee shirt.

This concept can work with any color palette. Some other examples: brown and cream plus blush and forest green. Or black and white plus avocado and coral. If you have no idea where to start, pick a favorite scarf or patterned blouse — make those colors your palette.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe - The Essential Pieces

1. the cropped jean.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

Cute, comfy and ready for long travel days — the cropped jean is a perfect staple in your spring capsule wardrobe. The warmer weather brings the chance to let our ankles show, but the jeans don’t have to be cropped; any favorite pair of denim will do. If you prefer a classic length my current favorite denim are the Way-High by Everlane ; I just ordered them for myself.

The jeans in my capsule are the Emma High-Waisted Crop by Citizens of Humanity (pictured). They may be hard to find now, but similar styles are everywhere (and listed just below).

I like high-waisted jeans. If you don’t, pick a mid-rise pair instead. Jeans are very personal, so grab any favorite pair and let’s explore the many ways we can style them for our spring vacation.

Susan in cropped jeans and a black shirt, and holding sunglasses

For a tapered crop, I like Boden’s High Rise True Straight Jeans, which come in several colors. I own several items by Boden and love them all.

It can be hard to order jeans online. If you prefer to try them on (very helpful for me), I suggest Madewell. They have many styles in store and are relatively well-priced and often have sales.

Levi’s are another great option, I own three pair and they are typically under $100. For an ankle length — great for spring  — I have my eye on the Ribcage Straight Ankle Women’s Jeans.

BUDGET PICK: This well-priced pair by Land’s End comes in white and two denim washes: Women’s Recover High-Rise Straight.

2. Lightweight Trousers

Lightweight wide-leg trousers in beige

After your jeans, this piece will be fundamental to your capsule wardrobe. Choosing the right trousers is important because they have to be comfy enough for wearing all day, and stylish enough to dress up in the evening.

My wide-leg trousers are by Rag and Bone. They are a couple of years old but I am listing several options below. This is where a search of your closet might produce something that could work. Any lightweight pants in a neutral color, that you feel good in, are a winner.

If you’d like to buy something, I am listing a few ideas below.

Susan Heinrich wears trousers and a striped t from her spring capsule wardrobe

Everlane make quality, well-priced items. My current favorites are the Way-High Drape Pant . I bought them in the Sandstone color and they work with sneakers and a tee, or I can dress them up with a blouse. The fit is very flattering and they come in two lengths. I am 5’6″ and ordered the 30″ inseam which is the perfect length for me. If you are taller you could go with the 32″.

Their  Tencel Way-High Taper Pant  in Ash Brown would also be lovely for spring. They look like dress trousers but are lightweight and machine washable.

I also own three pants from Athleta, all fantastic for travel because they feel like yoga pants but look like trousers.  The Brooklyn Wide-Leg Pant is very similar to the style to mine. They will be your new favorite travel pant.

3. the maxi skirt.

A pink pleated maxi skirt

I take a maxi skirt on almost every warm weather trip. I like the simplicity of it and think the style is flattering on many women. This is a great piece for dressing up in the evening but is also cute and comfy for a day of sightseeing with sneakers and a tee.

For my spring travel capsule color palette I picked a bright skirt. You could also select a neutral skirt — solid bottoms can simplify combining outfits. I am also loving green for spring and have ordered this A-line style from Boden to try out, the Isabella Skirt .

Any skirt that you like can work as long as it goes with several of your tops and either of the sweaters or the blazer. (Examples in the photos below).

Susan is in a spring travel outfit using the skirt in this capsule - it's paired with a black tee and she is wearing sunglasses and sneakers.

The skirt pictured is by Lucy of Paris from a few years ago.

Quince also has a very nice Washable Silk Midi Skirt that my friend has and loves. The lilac or the navy would be nice for spring. I own many items by Quince; the quality and prices are great.

If you prefer something more sporty, I like Athleta’s Stride Midi Skirt , violet or black. I have many Athleta pieces I travel with.

4. Cotton Cardigan Sweater

A navy cardigan sweater is a classic addition to any capsule wardrobee

To V or not to V, that is the question. I chose a navy v-neck cardigan for this spring capsule wardrobe, but a crewneck is equally nice as a versatile staple. I like that a v-neck is the perfect shape for a statement necklace without fussing with the buttons and neckline. My sweater is from Banana Republic and I’ve had it for years. Several options are linked below.

J. Crew Factory has a classic navy crew neck cardigan that is well-priced: Classic Cotton Cardigan Sweater .

This one at Banana Republic Factory has a deeper  V than mine and is also affordable: the Forever Cardigan in Preppy Navy .

And this lovely relaxed-fit cotton cardigan by Everlane, the Organic Cotton Cardigan, comes in three colors.

5. Pullover Sweater

Striped cotton sweater for spring travel

What says spring in Paris, or anywhere else, more than a striped sweater? It makes a statement, yet stripes are a classic. I might even call them a neutral. If you aren’t as striped-obsessed as I am, pick any sweater you like. It only has to work for daytime in this capsule, but if you want to go with something more versatile that you can dress up, that works too. Make sure it goes with either your trousers and/or skirt as well.

I am wearing the Leontine sweater by the French brand Sézane. It’s available in multiple colors; if your favorite is out-of-stock, check back as Sézane restocks frequently. Madewell also has a lovely striped sweater, perfect for a spring wardrobe, and it comes in two colors: the Conway Pullover Cotton Sweater.  It is an oversized style, so size down for a more traditional fit.

For more French style inspiration, you might enjoy my story: French Wardrobe Basics.

A navy blazer is a staple in a spring capsule wardrobe for vacation to Europe

Since my spring capsule wardrobe was created around a navy and white palette, I chose a classic navy blazer. If I am traveling to Europe in spring, I am packing a blazer. If you were going somewhere warm, you could opt for linen instead, navy, white or beige are all nice. You could also pick a blazer with a bit of pattern, but in that case I would choose a solid skirt that works with it.

I like the classic fit of J Crew’s Going-Out Blazer in Stretch Twill and it’s available in sizes 00-24, in classic, petite, and tall.

If you are headed somewhere warm, or it’s later in spring,  I love the pale color and relaxed fit of the Classic Relaxed Blazer in Oyster , by Reformation.

For a linen option check out Quince’s European Linen Blazer . Three gorgeous colors and it’s only $70! I bought their linen shirt and really like it. Quince makes stylish products at great price points and I own several other items from them that I am very happy with.

7. Short-sleeved Shirt

A white short-sleeved roll cuff shirt is a staple in a spring capsule wardrobe for vacation

Another workhorse of the spring capsule wardrobe, the short-sleeved button up shirt. This piece should be ultra comfy and breathable, keeping you cool through a day of sightseeing or lounging with a good book and a great view. There are lots of high-tech breathable fabrics that will whisk away any hint of perspiration, but I also love classic cotton. I bought this shirt  which is part of Banana Republic’s new Heritage line, a return to their roots as a clothing for adventurers. Adventure is always in style!

The Banana Republic Essential Roll-Cuff Shirt is sold out. Here are some similar options. Quince has a European Linen Short Sleeve Shirt which comes in seven colors. Similar to the one I am wearing, it’s a relaxed, boxy cut.

I also love this option from Everlane: The Short-Sleeve Box Shirt, in a classic neutral for any spring capsule wardrobe: white, black, slate blue, and ReChambray blue (made from recycled cotton), and this one from Madewell:  Signature Poplin Camp Shirt.

8. Long-Sleeved Button-Up

Long-sleeved black cotton shirt, a capsule wardrobe essential

I love the look of a long-sleeved shirt rolled up; I think it is so versatile for spring travel. I was imagining a trip to Europe when I planned this wardrobe and chose black. But you could go with any solid color that works with the rest of your capsule wardrobe. I also love a striped shirt for spring!

Pictured here is the Banana Republic Oversized Cotton Shirt, which I wear in my capsule. If you prefer a more tailored shirt, the Tailor Fit Easy Care comes in black, navy or white.

If you prefer linen to cotton, I own Boden’s Linen Shirt and the quality is fantastic. I’m linking to a pretty navy; it also comes in white. And this Quince Linen Shirt, as I mentioned. Boden is slightly softer but I like them both.

Finally if you also love stripes, I’ve just ordered this Cotton-Button-Up in the Ecru/Camel from Sézane. It comes in many fun colors for spring.  I will update this with my thoughts once I’ve tried it.

9. Tee Shirts + Tank

Three t-shirts in a stacked pile: white, black and striped, are staples of a spring capsule wardrobe

You can decide how many t-shirts you need, perhaps depending on whether you have access to laundry and how warm it will be. I chose 3 tees for my spring capsule, a white, a black and a striped, as well as a pink tank which you will see in the outfits below.

Most of us have t-shirts in out wardrobe. If you need a new one, my striped tee is by Boden. I also have t-shirts by Vince, Madewell, Banana Republic and so on. I am linking a few options below.

My pink tank is by Athleta. I am linking a similar one below.

Reformation makes a soft and well-priced classic: Perfect Vintage T, which is a relaxed fit, and I have the Vintage Classic Crew Neck by J. Crew in three colors. It’s nice quality, and the fit is just relaxed enough.

For stripes, Boden has a fabulous Short-Sleeved Breton T.

10. Spring Dress

A pink chevron patterned dress with black straps, by Loft

This is the one thing in your spring capsule wardrobe that doesn’t have to go with the color palette. A dress is a stand-alone piece; it can be any color or pattern.

You should love it and feel comfortable, and make sure it works with at least one pair of shoes and possibly your cardigan or blazer for layering. But you could also wear your trench coat if it’s chilly.

I picked this pink chevron patterned dress because I liked the colors for spring and the jersey material makes it easy to pack – it doesn’t wrinkle!

It’s from Loft in 2021, the Chevron Dress Flounce Pocket, so I am linking a few other dresses I love. Note: that if you do purchase this specific dress on resale somewhere, you will need to wear a stretchy “tube bra” over your regular bra because it clings a bit at the chest.

I love Sézane’s Alani dress . Shirt-dress styles are classic. I own several and wear them often. For something colorful, Boden’s Linen Kaftan Maxi comes in two pretty options, a solid coral and a stripe, in sizes from 2-22. I own one dress by Boden and would happily fill my closet with them. They are well-made and comfortable.

If you prefer something sleeveless, Athleta’s Santorini Midi Dress travels well. The name references the island of Santorini, and this would be fabulous for spring in Greece! (I was in Greece in mid-May last year, and it was very hot. I wore light dresses every day.

Susan Heinrich sits outdoors at a Paris cafe in fall wearing a trench coat, wide-leg jeans and blue pointed-toe flats.

11. Trench Coat

If you don’t already own a trench coat this could be the piece you invest in, especially if you are headed to Europe in spring. The classic trench is versatile and a true wardrobe staple.

The one I am wearing in most of the photos was 10+ years old, by Tori Burch, so I recently purchased the Sézane Scott Trench Coat .  (I am wearing it in Paris in the above photo.) I am thrilled with it. It’s the perfect weight, the fabric is beautiful and it’s a classic cut. And  Sézane ships free to the U.S. on orders over $200.

This timeless style will forever be available from a variety of retailers. The old-school original was made by Burberry in 1916, so I’ve included it below, as well as a couple of budget-friendly alternatives. You could go with grey or black but if your style inspiration is the same as mine, Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, then choose tan.

For a short style, consider the Comfort Stretch Trench by Quince . I own several Quince items and am very happy with the quality. And prices are great. This piece is $99 at time of writing.

A similar option and price point is the J. Crew Classic Trench : available in tan or navy, sizes 00 to 24.

And if you want to channel Audrey Hepburn and splurge on the ultimate investment piece, or just explore a trench treasure trove, you can see Burberry’s current collection here: Burberry Trench Coats .

A row of colorful belts on display at Sézane Paris. Several shoes and boots are also pictured just below.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Shoes

If you told me you start planning any capsule wardrobe with shoes, I would tell you that you are brilliant. The right shoes solve most problems that come up when planning the essential pieces to take on your trip: The problem of space in your luggage, the problem of comfort and practicality, and in the case of Europe, cobblestones aren’t especially forgiving. And of course, the requirement that you like how it all looks when you head out the door.

Susan Heinrich sits on the patio at Les Deux Magots in Paris. She is wearing sunglasses, light trousers, a striped button up shirt and sneakers.

Shoes for a Capsule Wardrobe for Europe

My basic rule of thumb is no more than three pairs of shoes on any trip and this is especially true if you are packing light, say a carry-on for Europe. The shoes will change with the seasons and destinations, but the criteria will not.

At least two pairs of shoes you can comfortably wear and walk in, all day. I say two because even the comfiest shoes can give you blisters if you walk in them long enough (I was recently reminded of this in Paris), so you need a second pair to alternate. A third pair can be more dressy, say for evenings. You’ll find more tips on comfortable shoes for Europe in Shoes for Paris Travel.

I had Europe travel in mind when I selected these for spring travel — a mule-style loafer, a sandal slide, and a pair of sneakers. All of them are comfortable, stylish and work with multiple outfits.

12. Loafers (Mule or Classic Style)

Mule style loafers, one in pink, one in tan

Are these mule-style loafers the MVP of this spring capsule wardrobe? Chic, comfy and well-priced – I think they are! They are inspired by and a nice copy of the classic, the Gucci Princetown .

Every time I slipped them on with one of my outfits, I instantly felt more put together. I did end up exchanging the pink for the tan. I think they will take me right on through fall in Europe! (I’m planning a fall trip to France). And there are several other color options as well.  I love the white for summer.

BCBGeneration Women’s Zorie Mule Loafers  are comfy and stylish and come in five colors; I have them in beige. These Women’s Linnie Tailored Mules by Sam Edelman are very similar, slightly more expensive.

Tory Burch makes a chic style, the Jessa Mule, which comes in black and cream.

13. Sandal Slides

A flat slide-style sandal in a chestnut color, resembles the classic sandal by Hermes

A flat slide-style sandal in a chestnut color truly goes with everything you’ll wear this spring. Dress it up, keep it casual. I love these, no accident considering they resemble the classic Oran sandal by Hermes.

Mine are from Target. I never buy shoes from Target because I don’t buy a lot of shoes. So when I do, I typically invest in shoes made to last. But rules are made to be broken and when I saw these I grabbed them. I have been pleasantly surprised, they are so comfy and have held up well with considerable wear. Mine aren’t available this season but you can get an even nicer pair – the Alibi by French Sole.

Or if you are in a position to splurge on Hermes, well, I won’t tell you not to. They are also linked, because when do I ever link to anything from Hermes?!

Alibi Sandal by French Sole, available at Tuckernuck in classic Cognac (pictured above), and white. Or if you want the designer version, consider the Hermes Oran Sandal (sigh).

Everlane’s Day Crossover Sandal has a similar feel and comes in a lovely cream and taupe.

14. Sneakers

White canvas Esplar sneakers with a blue accent, by Veja

Any sneakers will do for a spring capsule wardrobe, and don’t worry about being under-dressed. Even in Paris women wear comfy running shoes to elegantly speed along the cobblestones.

Since it was spring and I was ready for a new pair, I chose the Esplar Canvas Sneakers by Veja.

My sneakers are by the French brand Veja; the style are the Esplars in canvas. It may be unavailable but you can explore all their cute styles here: Veja Store. Mine are canvas, but I find leather are easier to keep clean.

I also love this style by Cariuma in white or peachy-beige. This brand from Brazil is both comfy and eco-friendly with lots of fun styles for women and men

And for an affordable pick, you can’t beat Classic Keds.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Accessories

15. scarves, belt, statement necklace.

Accessories for a spring capsule wardrobe: a green scarf, a blue scarf, a sparkly silver necklace, and black belt

With the right accessories, your capsule will feel much more varied. I always travel with scarves, and included two of my favorites here.  Mix in one fabulous belt by Sézane , and garnish with a pretty  necklace which makes it easy to dress up for evening. My necklace is a souvenir from a trip to India. Anything fun will do!

The Artemis Belt by Sézane comes in many wonderful colors and the lack of holes makes it really versatile — it can be worn higher or lower. Try belting it overtop of a button-down shirt as I did for an evening outfit.

Capsule Wardrobe for Spring in Europe

Evening outfits.

Our spring travel capsule has to work for evening as well. I am showing you three outfit options here but I think we can stretch it to six evenings for a week away.

I would wear the dress twice –  with or without the blazer. And I could also pair the skirt with the black long-sleeved shirt and necklace. If I had space (and I did when I packed it all in a carry-on) I would tuck in an additional lightweight blouse that I would wear in the evening with the trousers.

Tote Bag for a Spring Capsule Wardrobe

My tote bag is the Class Structured Leather Tote by Cuyana. It’s a traditional tote style with an open top. I do travel with it, and use it at home to carry my books to French class, to meetings, or to work at a coffee shop. Cuyana also has totes with a closed top, the Easy Zipper Tote.

Cuyana totes are pricey. For something similar for less, I like Quince’s Classic Leather Italian Tote. It’s available in four lovely colors, including classic black and cognac.

Susan Heinrich carries a tan tote bag by Cuyana, with two additional photos of the outside and inside of the bag

Sustainable Clothing Brands for Capsule Wardrobes

Many of the brands listed here make sustainable production a priority. Athleta, Boden, Sézane, Reformation, Amour Vert and Veja are all certified B Corps. To earn B certification a business must meet high standards of performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits to sustainability and  supply chain practices.

Everlane, a great source for well-priced basics, gets high marks for sustainability in many areas, but isn’t B Corp Certified. You will find the name of the factory a piece was made in, in each product listing when you click on “More detail”.

The bigger brands mentioned here, such as J. Crew and Banana Republic are making strides toward sustainability, but have a long way to go. Some of their products use sustainable materials. I own many J.Crew and Banana items which I’ve purchased over the years. A nd I am making an effort to purchase from small sustainable retailers, going forward. That’s why I’ve included them here; I hope you’ve discovered some new brands. And  you have a favorite sustainable clothing brand, please share in the comments below.

Classic Clothing Items to Invest in

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

When curating your travel wardrobe you want to start off with good solid pieces that will interchange with many outfits. These are the pieces to invest in because they will last for your trips in years to come! Also, always remember the cardinal rule when packing: stick to a similar color palette. It makes life easier when you’re on the road. Consider this your packing list for classic items:

Trench Coat

A classic trench coat is the clothing equivalent to a good black purse. It’s a wardrobe staple that will never go out of style. Being that it’s lightweight, I travel with mine the majority of the time. When shopping for your trench stick to a classic style.

White Button Down

The perfect all-season staple is a white button-down . Whether you’re wearing it with jeans, a leather skirt, or simply leggings you can never go wrong with this minimalist piece. I love wearing mine through the airport with leggings or with jean shorts in the summer. Being that they will never go out of style, this is a great piece to invest in.

A classic blazer will dress up any look with its sharp silhouette! It’s no longer a staple for the office we are taking the blazer everywhere with us. You can never go wrong styling a blazer with jeans and sneakers for a casual look. Or take it out to a fancy dinner paired over a midi dress and heels. Finally, throw it on with leggings and a tee at the airport for a polished look.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide-leg trousers have taken the fashion industry by storm in the past few years. They have become a new classic staple and I am here for it! Not only are they comfortable but they’re uber stylish as well. You can’t go wrong with that combo and the trousers I linked come in multiple colors.

Midi Dress (Spring/Summer)

A midi dress is a perfect balance between casual and polished. For summer travel, you can easily wear it with sneakers for a day of sightseeing or paid with heels and a clutch for a night out. It’s also a very flattering silhouette to add to your closet!

Sweater Dress (Fall/Winter)

The fall equivalent of a midi dress is a sweater midi dress . A cold weather staple and one of the most comfortable pieces of clothing to travel in during the colder months. Pair with sneakers for a daytime look or high-heeled boots for a fancy dinner. It rounds out your travel capsule wardrobe perfectly.

Straight Leg Jeans

I have a love-hate relationship with jeans when it comes to traveling but they are no doubt one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can add to your wardrobe. Stick to a straight-leg style since they are very trendy at the moment. You also want a pair that fits properly or else you will be uncomfortable. These AG Golde jeans come highly recommend and the material is a bit stretchy.

Neutral Cardigan

Cardigans have been in fashion for decades. Not only that but a cardigan comes in handy during those long-haul flights and train rides. I like to pair my neutral cardi with straight-leg jeans, a tank top, and sneakers for a travel day polished look.

Trendy Pieces

Trendy pieces are a great way to round out your travel capsule wardrobe. You can easily filter these pieces in and out as you see fit. Finally, when shopping for trendy clothes I tend to go out of the box in terms of colors and patterns as I will filter out these pieces within a year or so.

Statement Blouse

A statement blouse truly makes a statement. The best part about wearing a statement blouse is you can keep your other articles of clothing simple. Let the blouse have its own moment!

Leather Trousers

Leather trousers are another hot item that has taken the fashion world by storm. I don’t see leather slowing down as a trend so pick yourself up a pair of classic pants to last years to come.

Black Split Front Pants

These split-front pants elevate any outfit but feel like leggings. Sounds like a win-win for me! Pair this with a white button-down, black booties, and throw on a trench coat and you have yourself a solid European Outfit.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Accessories

Retro sneakers.

The sneaker trend is not going anywhere so buckle up sister and buy yourself a nice pair of retro sneakers . These can easily be styled with a dress and denim jack. Or opt to wear them with split front pants and a white button-down.

Wearable Heels

I tend to only pack one pair of wearable heels when traveling to Europe. Mostly because of the cobblestone streets. They do not pair well with heels. However, if you choose a pair with a chunky heel you’ll be waltzing down those streets in style.

Black Heeled Booties

The versatility of Black Heeled Booties is endless! Whether you pair it with leather trousers and a statement blouse or opt for a more casual look with jeans and a white button-down you can trust these booties to last for years. I always splurge on accessories because they are mostly worn in my wardrobe.

Crossbody Bag

I love a good shoulder bag like the rest of the fashion world but when traveling I always carry a crossbody bag . For multiple reasons one being scams and pickpocketers. When wearing your crossbody in front of your person you are less likely to have someone rummaging through there when no one is looking. I love this trendy crossbody from Marc Jacobs because it’s the perfect blend of classic and trendy.

Wide Brim Fedora

An easy way to elevate any daytime look is by adding a wide brim fedora . You can pair it with a leather jacket and jeans for a daytime look or with a sweater dress and over-the-knee boots for a night out. The best part about wearing a hat while traveling is not only do you look chic but it protects your face from the sun.

Travel Tote Bag

An ideal tool that comes in handy for travelers is a tote bag . Whether you’re toting around your laptop at the airport or simply shopping in the European markets, bringing a classic tote bag on your trip will always be a good idea.

Black Sunglasses

Chic, timeless, and classic. I am describing these Le Specs Sunglasses that I own in two colors because they are that good. We love a good pair of sunglasses to hide our tired eyes while traveling. Finally, they are under $70 so it’s a steal.

How to Dress European

The key to blending in with the Europeans is creating an outfit that has 3 elements: classic, cool, and minimalism. If you can learn this formula you will be golden. Another important thing to remember is that Europeans do not wear activewear as a leisure outfit unless they are quite literally on their way to the gym. So leave the lululemon and baseball caps at home! One of the main reasons we want to blend in as locals when traveling is because you are less susceptible to being targeted for a travel scam. Here are a few packing tips to help you dress like a European:

  • Stick to classic clothing, you can also dare to be trendy with some pieces because it is Europe after all
  • Wear neutral colors
  • Bring comfortable walking shoes that look elevated
  • Leave the athleisure wear and logos at home
  • Don’t wear jeans often, they used to be a big no-no but in recent years have become more accepted in Europe. Opt for a straight leg or wide leg pair they are tres chic
  • Alternatively, if you are wearing a feminine outfit choose a menswear-inspired shoe

I'm Always Catching a Flight, and I Swear By This Travel Capsule Wardrobe

spring-travel-capsule-wardrobe-298348-1646665083768-main

This is your sign to  book that flight. Spring is the best time of the year to catch the travel bug and add a few vacations to your calendar. The winter hibernation is beginning to come to a close, and you're likely ready to go out and about again. I recently took a bicoastal flight to visit family and have to applaud my packing skills. For once, I truly had everything I needed and found it easy to get out the door every morning while living out of my suitcase. And I certainly didn't overpack. I wore nearly every item that I brought along with me.

How did I do it? The pieces you'll find in the below  capsule wardrobe ended up laying down the groundwork. I then topped off my suitcase with a "statement piece" for every day to  build outfits around. I honestly could have gone a month without coming back home since there were so many outfits that I could make out of what I ended up packing, so I have to share with you the ultimate spring capsule wardrobe, tested and approved by me.

spring-travel-capsule-wardrobe-298348-1646694564754-main

1. Trench Coat

You'll never regret buying a trench coat. I've been wearing mine for a year or two, and I know we have a lifetime together to look forward to.

Topshop + Editor Long Trench Coat

I'm calling this the perfect trench coat that will never go out of style.

H&M + Cotton Trench Coat

Spoiler alert: This is the next trench coat I'm buying.

Burberry + Kensington Trench Coat With Detachable Hood

Paddington would approve.

& Other Stories + Relaxed Trench Coat

Pastel, please.

Speaking of outerwear, you also can't spend your week away without a good blazer. For me, something that feels slightly different than what everybody else is wearing is a standout in this category.

Something Navy + Classic Blazer Tan Combo

You need this.

Reformation + Veda Bowery Leather Blazer

I've seen this blazer go out of stock multiple times.

H&M + Single-Breasted Jacket

An H&M blazer always feels so luxe when it arrives.

Jaquemus + La Veste D'Homme

The oversize fit wins again.

3. Midi Dress

I feel like nothing looks more elegant than a sophisticated midi dress. While I love my minis, choosing this style for my travels left me with no regrets. It's so easy to throw on before you head out for your adventures.

Who What Wear Collection + Tiler Long Sleeve Dress

I felt so chic in this.

Staud + Wells Stretch Cotton Poplin Midi Fit & Flare Dress

My next buy.

Faithfull the Brand + Trapani Cutout Linen Midi Dress

You know how I feel about cutouts.

Treasure & Bond + Shirred Long Sleeve Midi Dress

Wearing white on vacation is a must.

4. Wide-Leg Trousers

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: Wide-leg trousers are so elevated. When getting dressed for my flight, I almost pulled on sweatpants but talked myself into loose trousers, and I was so glad I did. I got many compliments without ditching comfort.

Totême + Wool-Twill Wide-Leg Pants

This color is everything.

Reformation + Amelie High Waist Wide Leg Stretch Cotton Jeans

Denim works too.

Open Edit + Cargo Wide Leg Pants

I could talk about cargo pants for days.

Loulou Studio + Noro Leather Wide-Leg Pants

I need these.

5. Retro Sneakers

When traveling, you can't forget a good pair of sneakers. I like to pack a pair that feels stylish but could also work for a light jog. This way, I don't have to bring two pairs of sneakers with me. Retro is the trend fashion editors are unanimously loving right now, so shop the below picks.

Tretorn + Rawlins Retro Sneaker

Cool girl, check this out.

New Balance + 997H Sneakers

Can't believe these are still in stock.

Tory Burch + Hank Sneaker

Mouth is watering.

Adidas x Wales Bonner + Sneakers

Any Adidas collab quickly becomes an obsession of mine.

6. Wearable Heels

I love my sneakers, but nine times out of 10, I'm going to wear heels. My legs deserve some emphasis, and heels obviously take any look to the next level. Comfort is definitely important here because you sometimes don't come back for hours when you leave your hotel for the day. You're in good hands with the below picks.

Open Edit + Cora Heel Sandal

I just ordered these.

Staud + Frankie Ruched Sandals

My Staud heels never cause me pain.

Vince Camuto + Semtera Block Heel Slide Sandal

Pastels for spring? I know, quite original of me.

Manolo Blahnik + Hangisimu 70 Embellished Satin Mules

I dream about these shoes.

7. Shoulder Bag

You're on vacation, so you deserve to be hands-free. Shoulder bags have my heart and soul right now. I don't leave the house without one. I'm loving a strong silhouette and shape to make it feel elevated.

Neous + Phoenix Leather Shoulder Bag

I've had my eye on this guy.

Jacquemus + Le Bambino Long Bag

Jaquemus does it again.

Biosa + Alligator Pattern Hobos Zipper Handbag

I'm taking every color home with me.

Burberry + Leather-Trimmed Checked Canvas Shoulder Bag

We love to see a designer bag with an excellent price point.

8. Statement Blouse

Don't we all love a good top? Ruching, puff sleeves, cutouts, and saturated colors make them even better. Having one on hand is a must, especially when you have multiple bottoms you can pair it with.

Reformation + Fern Ruffled Gathered Peplum Top

I can always count on Reformation to make a good top.

WAYF + Avalon Puff Sleeve Bustier

When a corset and puff sleeves meet, it's love at first sight.

H&M + Crop Top

A good crop top for you beachgoers.

Ulla Johnson + Milla Top

It's not a want—it's a need.

9. Polished Jeans

And I must leave you with a good pair of jeans. If your current collection is missing a polished pair, then you're in luck. When I say polished, I mean a pair of jeans that can easily feel dressed up when you add tailoring and kitten heels. The below picks are pretty good.

Frame + Le Italien High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans

Loving dark wash right now.

Wandler + Poppy Straight-Leg Jeans

A unique shade of blue.

Levi's + High Waist Straight Leg Jeans

Kaia Gerber  has this pair.

H&M + Wide High Ankle Jeans

It's the frayed hem for me.

Style at a certain age.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

yesterday, i shared my five must-have travel wardrobe staples and my goal to pack light for our trip to europe. read it here  if you missed that post. today, it’s all about my black and white capsule wardrobe. but first, here are a few items that make it into my carry-on. don’t ever pack anything other than clothes and toiletries in your checked luggage; anything of value is kept close. for this trip, i splurged and purchased a new marc jacobs floral print sport tote. it’s polyurethane and easily wiped down. it has two sets of handles – long and short – and a zipper. since my wardrobe color palette is black and white, i went for a pop of color and pattern with my handbag. an elegant  michael kors wallet with a flip lock flap closure keeps me organized. but this is what typically finds its way inside my travel tote.

  • portable charger
  • lint roller
  • mints

europe wardrobe capsule

a survival kit for the long airplane ride is a must. this is what i carry at all times, wherever I go.

  • hand sanitizer
  • lip balm
  • zzzQuil melatonin gummies,
  • tide bleach pen
  • hand and face wipes
  • not shown is a travel first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and gauze pads.

europe wardrobe capsule

gingham raincoat ( similar here ) |  black blazer  |  denim jacket

three jackets made the grade. with rain, in the forecast, a raincoat was a no-brainer. this gingham coat was lighter than a traditional trench, and it’s black and white. a blazer and denim jacket should get me by with temps in the seventies. plus, a blazer is perfect to wear to dinner in the evening.

europe wardrobe capsule

henley dress  | denim shirtdress ( similar here )

two dresses were packed. the henley tee shirt dress is a dream to wear and looks cute with sneakers. it will be perfect when the temperatures reach the eighties. the denim shirtdress flies solo with black booties but pulls double-duty as a duster over jeans.

europe wardrobe capsule

chinos  |  toothpick jeans  |  white denim

pants get the most wear and tear on trips as they’re worn multiple times. dark rinse denim hides a multitude of travel sins. but i have a tide bleach pen in case the white denim falls on hard times. chinos are comfortable. and black pants? what more can we say about pants that go with everything?

europe wardrobe capsule

  black pants

europe wardrobe capsule

floral maxi skirt |  white corset skirt

many of us would forego skirts. but i love to wear them especially when the temps climb into the seventies and eighties. this floral maxi skirt is lightweight, looks adorable, and will be perfect for evening. the white corset skirt looks fantastic with espadrilles or sneakers. i think it will be on style repeat all vacation long.

europe wardrobe capsule

black tee sold out ( similar here ) |  gray tee  |  white tee

europe wardrobe capsule

stripe tunic  |  polka dot ruffle  |  gingham camp shirt |  chambray shirt | sleeveless white blouse

the rule of thumb is two tops to one bottom. counting my tees i have ten. but one more shirt can potentially make it into my suitcase. what do you think?  i just might be fine with the chosen blouses.

silk white ruffle  |  striped mock neck tee

europe wardrobe capsule

navy v-neck sweater  |  black cardigan

europe wardrobe capsule

sneakers  | espadrilles  |  backless loafers  |  black booties  |  metallic sandals

there may be one too many pairs of shoes for this trip. but the sneakers are worn on the plane. and mr. style might bail me out and pack one pair in his suitcase… all-in-all i think i’m ready to jet off to paris tomorrow night. what do you think?

Looks like a smashing lineup! No scarves?

Beth- lovely! First off, safe travels to you and Mr. Style. I’m betting you’ve packed a scarf or two and a few pieces of jewelry so am looking forward to seeing how you’ll switch things up day to day and add pops by way of your fabulous accessories. I’d like to know what you plan to carry as a day bag while out seeing the sights. I always struggle with finding the right mix of functionality in a cross body bag that can hold maps, water bottle etc with some modicum of style. I’m assuming the Marc Jacobs bag is for onboard travel. Thanks and bon voyage.

If it was me, I would probably cut down on the number of tops – for a 14 day trip you have some items you may only wear once or twice. Tops are also an opportunity to add some colour – say replace the white/black/grey tees with a bright red tee. My rule of thumb is make sure the tops work with most or all of the bottoms: that way the total number of potential outfits is at least (number of tops) x (number of bottoms). It’s always good to leave room for vacation purchases!

I would love for you to show a picture of your packed bag so I can see how you get all of that in there! Have a wonderful trip.

Beth, You will have a fqbulous time in Paris while looking Tres chic!

I’d skip heels, mules, skirts and anything white. Those are things I wouldn’t wear on a two-week trip. I need shoes with good support due to a ridiculous amount of walking. And I know myself — it takes concentration and technique to walk the cobbles without twisting an ankle. White wouldn’t last a day without getting dirty.

After I get home, I don’t like wearing my travel clothes for a good long time. Sooo tired of them! Maybe this is why I like to travel when the seasons are changing, so I can tuck those things away for a few months afterwards.

This is the color scheme I have chosen for a 7 day cruise from Boston to Montreal

. I am not taking any dresses or skirts as I just don’t often wear them. My face creams . make-up, and toiletries take up so much room. How do you pack yours? I love the packing bags we got a few years ago as it keeps everything more organized! Enjoy your trip. Looking forward to seeing how you put your clothes together! I love your style!

Thanks for this great post – I am leaving this week for a trip to Croatia and Slovenia and also chose black/white/navy for my travel wardrobe. I swear by packing cubes and can fit everything for a 12 day vacation into a 25” suitcase and a small carry on – I always pack a change of clothing and pjs in my carry on in case my luggage is lost or late. Have a great trip!

Good morning, Miss Beth! You’re going to look smashing on your European vacay with Mr. Style. So excited for you! Can’t wait to see your photos!

May I ask the brand of your slip-on mules with the tassels? Thank you!

Bon Voyage!

Great post re packing light. My husband would love to see what mr. style is packing and what size bag.

Great post, Beth! I love seeing your choices for the trip! I may have missed it, but how many days is the trip and do you have a separate outfit for travel, aside from the items shown? How about accessories, like bags, scarves, and jewelry? I appreciate seeing the different things for the carry-on bag. It’s easy to see how well all of these items would create a mix and match wardrobe for the duration. Do you ever find need to do laundry on your trip? Do you have items that particularly wash well by hand, if needed to do your own wash? Sounds like a great vacation!! Have fun!

I am on the tail end of a 2 week Adriatic vacation and am in Paris. We are same age and southern Atlantic coasters. Temps are rapidly climbing. I strongly recommend you leave behind the black booties and mules. Stan Smith Style sneakers rule the streets! The light tees/light tops with sleeves will get the most use. Consider switching heavy blazer for lighter cardigan linen topper. Not seeing any white bottoms yet in major european cities but light blue denim is popular. Have a fabulous time! Remember you can always shop to fill in gaps! Love your blog!

I am going to Paris too at the end of May for 10 days!!!! I was thinking about taking the ZZZquil pills – do they work? I’m dreading the flight over.

I’m starting to think about what I am taking and I noticed my color palate is the same, black, white and denim. We are twins!!!!! I hope you have a wonderful trip. We need to trade stories when we get back!!!

Looks great! Have a blast. Only thing I’d add is an outlet adapter for overseas. And don’t forget to call credit card companies to let them know you’re heading off. I always remember that as I did forget once and freaked! hahahaaaa. Oh–and when I last traveled, to Greece and Turkey, I did bring along a water bottle. Carried it with me on the plane too

Fabulous post! Have fun!

How to Curate a Perfect Travel Wardrobe, According to a Fashion Expert

Dressed to jet.

Packing for a single-destination trip is challenging enough, but what if your itinerary sees you taking flight to Rome for meetings, before swinging over to Brazil to watch your sister tie the knot, and then hightailing it to the Bay Area for a class reunion?

Sure, you can stuff the entire contents of your closet into multiple suitcases and pay extra to haul trunks around the globe, or you can pack thoughtfully and efficiently like a pro . We spoke to Libby Page, senior market editor at Net-A-Porter and a seasoned traveler — who jet sets for months at a time — for her tips on curating a classic wardrobe that transcends destination.

"When packing, start by laying out your wardrobe foundations — shirts, t-shirts, denim, and wide-leg pants in neutral colors that will work with everything,'' says Page. Once the foundation is set, Page builds looks out depending on what occasions she's dressing for and what the temperature is looking like. Throw on a necklace and bold lip for a dinner out, or wrap on a scarf for a day of sightseeing. Another important piece of advice: "Try and wear everything twice, but in a different way to save on space," says Page.

Ahead, she tells us her must-haves to always look chic on the road. So whether you're in Tokyo one day or Copenhagen the next, here are the items to pack in order to feel and look put together.

Classic White Shirt

You can never go wrong with a white shirt, and the staple works for all seasons. "It can be layered over a tank or a turtleneck, and even worn as a cover up on the beach — it's a truly versatile piece," says Page. "We are seeing shirts styled over bikini tops, paired back with tailored pants, a look which I will definitely be trying for my next vacation."

To buy: $990, net-a-porter.com

Light Knit Sweater

Even tropical destinations can get chilly in the evenings, so it's important to stow items that can be layered "to ensure you are prepared for a drop in temperature," says Page. She loves styling a cozy sweater with chino shorts and sneakers.

To buy: $69, nordstrom.com

Chic Black Blazer

This wardrobe classic can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. "I'd style this with a white t-shirt and denim shorts for a summer city escape or with black skinny jeans and over-the-knee boots for a fashion-forward look in London," says Page.

To buy: $2,695, nordstrom.com

Perfect Denim

A good pair of jeans is a must to throw on and go, no matter where in the world you are. For warmer weather, Page loves styling her favorite pair over a swimsuit during the day and then letting the swimsuit act as a bodysuit for evenings.

To buy: $170, net-a-porter.com

Practical Bag

As much as you want to, you can't take every handbag in your closet. Invest in one that will work for multiple outfits and occasions. "Savette's Symmetry 19 shoulder bag is the perfect size for all daily essentials," says Page. "The strap is adjustable and removable so it can be worn as a crossbody, small shoulder bag, or alternatively carried by the short handle. Three bags in one!"

To buy: $1,750, net-a-porter.com

Sensible, Stylish Shoes

Sure, sneakers are our go-to, but when you want to feel a little more polished, slip on some comfy yet stylish loafers, says Page. Plus, "they are easy to pack and small enough to save space in my luggage," she says. For an alternative footwear option for dinners and drinks the style expert says to pack a pair of timeless mules.

To buy: $795, net-a-porter.com

Luxe Luggage

For Page, a good piece of luggage is as essential as the contents inside. "I love RIMOWA's signature aluminum cabin suitcase, which is a new addition to my traveling wardrobe," she says. The lightweight and roomy aluminum bag can withstand being thrown in and out of cars and baggage belts, as well as whizzing through airports while looking effortlessly chic.

To buy: $1,400, rimowa.com

Packing For Italy: The 12-Piece Travel Wardrobe

12-piece travel wardrobe for Spring or Fall in Europe

Our trip to Italy (and Paris) will cover a little over two weeks. We’ll be in Rome, Lake Como and Venice, then finishing up in Paris for two nights. As of today, the forecasts indicate mild temperatures and pleasant conditions in Rome and Venice, and chilly, possibly wet conditions in Lake Como. The last time we were in Italy, much of Europe was experiencing an unusually hot spring, so I’m happy for the cooler temps, as I find them much easier to pack for.

When push came to shove, I opted for a “no muss, no fuss” wardrobe. I’ve selected pieces that will layer well to accommodate changing conditions. As always, I don’t include outerwear, accessories or underpinnings as part of my 12 items. And at the last minute I’ll give myself the option to add a “wild card” depending on weather and my mood.

So let’s dive right in to the details…

12-piece travel wardrobe for Italy

I really wanted to include some non-black footwear, as it just feels more seasonally appropriate. But because of the rain currently in the forecast, I’m including my black weatherproof ankle boots.

  • Low-heeled pumps , left. ( similar ) We have a few dinners on the schedule that are a step up from casual, so I decided to include these leopard ankle strap pumps. I know they’re comfortable for long periods on my feet (though I’ll probably limit their wear to evenings) and the leopard print gives simple outfits a nice lift.
  • Slip-on sneakers,  middle. ( similar )I wanted something a little fun and funky. And Not Black. I’ve road-tested these the last couple of weeks and they’ve passed with flying colors for comfort and durability.
  • Weatherproof ankle boots, right. ( similar )For wet and/or chilly weather. I also like to wear ankle boots on travel days to protect my feet. You never know when that Dude In A Hurry is going to run over your toes with his heavy suitcase.

After some dithering, I went with what I know works. Two pairs of slim leg jeans (one lighter wash, one medium), and two pairs of Eileen Fisher stretch crepe pants (one slightly cropped, the other hits just below the ankle).

  • Medium wash jeans ( similar ).
  • Lighter wash jeans ( similar ) . I decided to include a lighter pair in case the weather warms up.
  • Slim black knit pants, ankle length ( similar ).
  • Slim black knit pants ( similar ).  Both of these black pants can dress up easily if needed. They also can be hand washed in the sink if necessary, and will hang to dry overnight. They’re comfortable and breathable even if the weather warms up. Best travel pants I’ve found yet!

I decided to stick with tees and sweaters this time.

  • Black merino wool pullover ( similar ).  Mine’s Uniqlo from last year. It’s a little different from the style currently available, has a high-low hem and covers my bum.
  • Cashmere blend striped tee ( similar sweater option , similar tee option ).
  • Lightweight long grey sweater ( similar ).  Mine’s from last year, but it’s a nice sweater that’s not boxy or bulky, so can layer underneath a jacket.
  • Striped 3/4 sleeve tee ( similar ). This is a very lightweight tee, good in heat.
  • Long-sleeved black silk tunic ( similar ) .
  • Pink graphic tee ( similar , more options here or here ).  In case the weather warms up, or I hit the wall with neutrals.

I’m bringing two jackets this time rather than a cardigan. One jacket can dress up for evening, the other is lightweight and can be dressed up or down.

  • Silk kimono jacket ( similar ).
  • Short fringe edge tweed jacket ( similar )

I’m using scarves to add color and pattern. As I described in an earlier post, Color And Neutrals In A Travel Wardrobe , I’ve limited my tops to stripes and graphic prints, and scarves to florals. The pattern mix works so that any of the scarves can be worn with any of the tops.

  • Silk-cashmere blend long scarf ( similar ) .
  • Cotton-silk blend long scarf ( similar )
  • Silk square scarf (gifted).( options here )
  • Cashmere poncho ( similar style , save option here ) .

Outerwear And Bags

Spring travel wardrobe outerwear

(Don’t worry, those are just sun spots on the Gucci; it hasn’t faded.)

I opted for two water-resistant jackets, one that’s a bit heavier and warmer, and one that’s a very lightweight shell. I still haven’t found a day bag I like better for travel than my Pandora, but will also throw in a smaller crossbody bag for variety and a pop of color.

  • Utility jacket ( similar ) . This jacket is several years old from Sandro. I still love it as much as the day I bought it in London.
  • Rain jacket ( similar ).
  • Black satchel/crossbody bag.
  • Red crossbody bag. (older, new red crossbody options here )

Most of these pieces are from last year or are even older, but I tried to find items that are similar in style or fabric composition. I try to be sure that most of what I’m packing is washable.

I’m often asked about what sleepwear I pack for travel. In warmest weather I’ll pack a silk chemise, otherwise I love my Cool Nights pajamas.

Whew! I think I’m ready….

Beautiful! I’m going to Italy in the dead of summer, so it’s fun to see how your transitional wardrobe differs from my “Buckets of Sweat Tour” plan. But I glean some ideas from you, no matter what trip you’re taking! hugs, Janice

Janice, I LOL’d at your “Buckets of Sweat Tour.” 😀 That was our first visit, when daytime temps often hit three digits F.

I just planned (and posted) my wardrobe for Vancouver and followed similar steps. Somehow, I still want you to pack for me. 🙂 Maybe I should add more stripes? I can’t wait to read your recap and see your photos! Enjoy your trip!

Nice! I brought a similar wardrobe for my recent week in France. Did bring leopard shoes but didn’t wear them at all; I wished for my pointy-toed black flats (I’m not as creative a dresser as you, sadly). My green utility jacket and my black Aquatalia ankle boots were my heroes. I also bought a black leather moto jacket at The Kooples in Paris and wore that very often, and saw many of those style jackets on the street..

I will be interested to see how your sequin tennies fare; I did see TONS of white leather tennis shoes throughout Paris, and so you should be right on trend.

Bon voyage! I do hope you get some sunshine in Como. While rain was forecast almost daily, we had heat and daily sun for our week in July, capped off by a spectacular thunderstorm on our last evening.

All decorative speakers seem to be huge in Paris at the moment, along with white leather sneakers and (more my style) the basic black ankle boot.

Looks like wonderful choices and very versatile. I usually aim to appear dressy casual, but walking around in the city of Florence was the only time I’ve ever felt underdressed! Have a fabulous time!

Hi Marguerite, yes, the Italians seem to have a knack for wearing beautifully tailored clothing that doesn’t look formal or staid. I remember the men in Rome in their impeccable suits.

I’d really like to see how you get that lot into your carry on, it’s impressive! Several European short haul carriers won’t let you carry a hand bag if you have a carry on case so everything has to go into it. Although sometimes it just seems to depend who is on the desk…..

Hi Maureen, this fits into a carry-on with ease. I also carry a larger tote or duffel as my “Personal Item” and my purse goes in there for the flight. There’s often no way around checking a bag with the Easyjets of the world, so I’ll suck it up and check when I have to. And on the way home, I often check as I’ve bought skincare, oils/vinegars, etc. that can’t be carried on. But it’s sure nice to have a smaller bag for train travel and not taking up a massive amount of space in small hotel rooms!

I am impressed this fits into a carry on. Last weekend I went to London for three days/two nights. You know me Susan, I do not travel light. But British Airways wanted to charge me € 92 (return) for a suitcase. And that was the limit for me, so for the first time I got everything in a carry on. Much less than what you carry. AND I had a large tote with me as well for personal stuff and the camera. BA does allow that. I am always very impressed with your travel packing. Greetje

That’s what I am wondering! For a one month trip to Rome and northern Italy, I brought 5 long tops/short dresses and 3 prs of leggings, 2 prs of shoes, of course I am wearing one of each of these and a sweater and somehow struggled with packing it all. I ended up leaving one outfit (and the sweater because I bought a super cute raincoat!). I want to get it down to 3 tops and 2 bottoms for the future. I try for dressy comfortable and mostly black. I forgot PJs and my slippers, it was so chilly, I slept in leggings and one of my husband’s shirts….

I should print this out and tape it inside my suitcase. I am the worst packer. What outfit makes sense to me at the time of packing is always missing something when I get to my destination. Also, I could never ever pack in just a carry-on. My toiletries alone are a carry-on sized bag! I seem to pack perfectly for my young son, but badly for myself!

I can’t wait to see photos from your trip! You’re going to a few of my favourite places in Italy. xx

I would eliminate the lighter colored jeans and bring a another pair of black cropped pants instead. And, eliminate one of the boat neck, striped tees and substitute a snug fitting black v neck of some sort for a dressier look. One jacket that you can layer under. I’m sticking with leaving the spangled white shoes for places other than Italian cities.

I live in Italy (in Tuscany, near Florence) and sparkly, spangly, and/or metallic shoes are very popular here right now, on women and girls of all ages.

I will be traveling to Italy this October, whats popular at this time.

Looks very versatile. A skirt? I guess I don’t see you often in skirts. A nice knit skirt can go from dressy with pumps to being a substitute for shorts when paired with sneakers. (Since almost nobody wears shorts in Europe, a skirt is even better. And cool.) Although the weather in the south has been balmy, I haven’t worn any skirts lately. Black tights seem too wintery and my legs are too whale-white to be seen in public. I need to get some fake tan on them. Just a little, to lessen the glare.

hi francetaste, I’ve packed skirts in the past, but wore them so rarely I stopped. I don’t wear them at all at home.

I am once again in awe of how little you are able to survive with! Please tell us about your laundry plans – do you send items out, wash them yourself in a laundromat?? How can you trust someone else not to ruin your cashmere items? And jeans cannot be washed out in a hotel sink, can they? I just cannot wear tops more than once without cleaning them (or pajamas more than three times) so would need at least 14 tops for two weeks unless I had access to a washing machine so am curious on how you manage. CMM

Hi CMM, I’ll do an updated post on travel laundry soon, but the short answer is that I bring items that can be hand washed in the sink, and others that don’t need to be washed as often. I find that in cooler weather, I don’t sweat and so don’t feel the need to wash clothes as often either.

I don’t sweat much either when it’s cool. I often wear a fitted black tank under my sweaters or dresses, and that’s easy to wash. Plus I’m in an apartment with laundry facilities.

Yes! I buy silk-cotton mix tanks or undie tees and wear them under the rest. The natural fibres make for less sweatyness and the cashmere waits until I get home, as do the jeans.

Do you find that you get hot layering the tanks/tees under the other pieces? I get so hot, then cold, then hot . . .

I’m looking forward to your laundry post. I tried to pare down my big suitcase on a recent cruise and constantly had things hanging to dry in shower. How do you manage when staying someplace different every night? I made a chart of ensembles to help with mixing & matching but things still were a little crazy by the end of the cruise. Thanks for your help. My trip to Paris last Oct. was perfect. I was so confident in what I was wearing – no tacky tourist here!

Hello Susan, what will you wear on the plane? Is it from the 12 pieces or separate outfit for air travel? Thanks so much.

Hi Debbie, I’ll choose items from this 12 to wear on the plane. Probably will be the longer black pants, the black sweater and boots. My cashmere poncho can be a scarf, a blanket or worn as usual.

Thank you Susan. I leave for Italy at the end end of May. Decided carry-on only so your 12 piece wardrobe has inspired me. Anxious to see if I can pull it off. Have a delightful trip.

Great practical selection of pieces, I wish I could be more disciplined to pack lighter. I tend to wear trousers and jeans on city trips rather than skirts or dresses because I find them much more practical.

I have been reading your blog since I retired two years ago but wish I had found you much earlier. Business trips to Europe required much more “business” wear (jackets/heels) than the US but many of your tips would have been invaluable. Now hubby and I are planning our first real vacation to Europe and thanks to you I purchased the EF washable crepe pants and a silk/jersey tunic (“midnight”/navy, not black!) and have a pretty good idea of which scarves and jewelry to pack so that I can dress up or down. Always look forward to reading you with my first cup of coffee in the morning.

Kathryn51, I love to know that I am not the only one who starts her day with a cup of coffee and a little ‘une femme’!

I like this- and your itinerary!- and will venture that you can get along fine with one outerwear piece: one of the two you have shown- because we are rarely required to stay outdoors in a sideways-blowning deluge. If you have a utility jacket, all you need is an umbrella, which you still need with a rain jacket. Have a splendid time!

Susan, I admire your small packing theory but I wouldn’t be able to do it. I pay extra (for 2 cases 1 cabin). I need choices depending on my mood that day. I find I only ever wear black if I am low or depressed or at a funeral. If I am not depressed and then decide to wear black I always have a terrible time. So always colours for me.

I love black and don’t find it depressing at all. It makes me think of my succession of black cats, with their beautiful green eyes. Livia has a red collar of course. But black can be too hot in summer heat, especially in the Mediterranean.

Many Italian garments have beautiful colours that aren’t too loud and garish, too dull, or too pastel. But that is the fruit of a long heritage.

Your trip sounds just delightful! I aspire to Carry-On travel and have been looking to buy a new bag. Do you carry a ‘domestic’ carry-on or an ‘international’ carry-on?

Just got back from three weeks – Paris-Bruges-Amsterdam and my packing list looked very similar to yours! Weather ranged from a high of 76 to a high of 47! MVP’s of my trip (most valuable pieces) were my black, waterproof jacket, black boots and my packable primaloft jacket from Lands End! Can’t wait to see what your “wild card” item is!!!

One travel packing tip I use (I think I picked up from Mighty Girl http://mightygirl.com/ ) is that my loungewear (I sleep naked) should be multi-purpose -I think her example was leggings she ended up going horseback riding in once. For me, it might be a coverup I could wear to the pool/beach, or exercise tights, or…..

Four pairs of pants but not one dress or skirt?

Hi Susan, nope. I don’t wear them at home, and I’ve found that when I pack them for travel they go unworn as well. 🙂

It must be the name, as I rarely take skirts on holiday these days!

I always take a couple of skirts – and a dark jeans or similar trousers. The skirts also to wear on the plane. When it was possible to get a couple of free seats, a midi skirt to stretch out in – planes are so horribly uncomfortable. I don’t wear shorts except to do yard or heavy housework in hot weather, and jeans are hot in hot weather…

Nice! I’ll be watching for your report on two things: 1) How the Sam leopard/cheetah shoes fare. I have the same ones with the black heel and they are crazy uncomfortable. Your linked choices are slightly different, so maybe they are better. And, 2) jeans? Do you see women wearing jeans often in Europe? (I am headed to Belgium/Netherlands for two weeks in May and will be noticing.) And do you have jeans that can be washed in the sink and dried overnight? Thanks, Cindy

Jeans seen constantly in Paris. Things like jeans, plain or striped tops, scarves (always scarves), puffer jackets, moto jackets, leather sneakers. But I think that you can wear most things really. No denim mini skirts noticed, but at 47 that was never going to be on my list. Oh, and embroidery is here, on tees, jackets etc.

Plenty of jeans in the Netherlands and Belgium as well. The one thing I’d avoid is overly bleached or distressed jeans. I take dark jeans, but also skirts, as I frequently wear skirts, and find it much easier to wash out tights or leggings than jeans (I can’t wear jeans more than two or three times without washing them…).

Remember that the Dutch are among the tallest people in the world, so if you have long legs it is a good place to shop for trousers. (Not my case; I feel very height-challenged there).

Thank you. I guess I have morphed mostly away from jeans here at home, too, now that I think about it. And they do seem heavier and bulkier to back than other choices. But look great in most outfits.

Cynthia Allen. Are you the same.???

Your packing ideas keep getting better and better! Hope you have a wonderful trip. We’re headed to Croatia, France and London in September.

Just a comment from a fair skinned reader- No hat?? I have a pretty sturdy woven straw-(ish) hat from Eric Javits that I love to bring to sunny destinations- helps the heat and helps the sunburn. I think I toured Pompeii on a 90+ degree day and needed to carry my own shade with me. I know a lot of ladies think twice before wearing a ball cap, but a packable straw hat is a great thing to have.

I’d take your navy puffer if you are leaving for Paris soon. It was 20 and hot in the sun in Annecy over the weekend…. Now it’s cold and about 12 in Paris today. I followed your lead and bought a puffer jacket to bring and it has been invaluable. Nights also quite chilly. But I am from Australia!

SAFE TRAVELS………………SAY CIAO to ITALIA from ME!

Another great packing post. I am curious about the EF knit pants, do you need to wear a tunic/hip length top with them? Can they work with a regular tee/sweater? I have a week in Ireland this August and I keep asking myself what would Susan pack!

Hi Mary, it really depends on your comfort level. They’re thicker and looser-fitting than leggings so don’t need a longer top to look appropriate. I always like to have a top that covers at least to the top of my hips regardless of what pants I’m wearing.

Thank you for the information. Think I’ll head to Nordstrom and try some on. Have a wonderful trip, looking forward to seeing your items in action.

I’m planning to go to Milan and Venice this September. As I’ve never been to Venice before, I’m hoping for lots of recommendations of places to stay, sights to see and great places for dining out! Enjoy your trip!

I was in Tuscany April 14th through 21st. Your list was perfect for the weather we encountered. I took two sweaters and a water resistant jacket. I wore several layers each day, except for a warm Easter Sunday in Cinque Terre. Glad I didn’t pack sandals. I did notice that lightweight puffer jackets were very popular for both men and women.

We flew EasyJet from London to Pisa. My daughter and husband got on the plane with wheeled bags, backpacks, and a third bag each. I got stopped with two bags and had to pay 40 Euros to check my suitcase. It definitely depends on who is at the desk and whether the flight is on time. We stayed in AirBnBs and small hotels. I brought a travel clothes line and planned to hand wash a few items and use either a hairdryer or an iron to complete the drying process if necessary, but there were none to be found. I may pack one of the other for the next trip. Also, Downey Wrinkle spray.

Thanks for your organizing and especially style advice. Can’t wait for an update on your trip.

Thanks for another great packing guide. I started following you when I semi retired two years ago and your travel tips updated my wardrobe and lightened my packing all at the same time. I love the stripes/florals/denim basics. As always you are so modern, youthful, classic & chic at the same time.

Have a wonderful, wonderful time!

This is such a timely post for me! In 2 weeks, we are headed for a 10 day trip to Copenhagen and Paris. I’m always a over packer and this gives me a better idea of what to pack. I’ll be definitely taking black pants and striped tops and a few scarves. Merci!

Thank for another great packing wardrobe. I like so many of your updates! What about adding a summer button shirt or popover for those sunny days? I wore a light cardigan or shirt almost every day while traveling in Italy in May. I wore cashmere and light wool cardigans at night. Your jacket choices will be so lovely for dinners. I agree with adding a hat. You are smart to take two coats, one heavier and one very light weight, as you are showing. Have a wonderful trip! You deserve it!

This will be unpopular, but I don’t see the sophistication here in your travel wardrobe that I see in the clothes you feature in your daily life. I am going to Paris for a month soon, and I want to look more cosmopolitan, while still being comfortable. Washable silk shirts and structured jackets come to mind. Why so many t- shirts? I am afraid you have assembled a very tourist look.

Hi Gloria, what I’ve found over time and many trips is that more tailored, structured clothing is more difficult to pack in a small suitcase and often requires pressing. I’ve included a silk top that dresses up quite nicely, as do both of the jackets. Our vacations often involve traveling between 2-4 cities on trains (and occasionally busses) and having a small, light bag that I can carry up and down stairs and stow easily is a boon. Were I to be staying in one city for a longer period, I’d probably include more pieces with more variety.

Great choices, Susan. I find I always wear more casual outfits than smattering holiday and usually take home the latter unworn. Maybe your wildcard could be a loose shirt for warmer days, just in case Rome gets hot.

I love your blog. I am a new follower. I will say that I am disappointed in your travel wardrobe. You are a style blogger. Jeans and tshirts and sweaters?!? Not impressed this time. The athletic wear shoes are like you are trying too hard to be “cool”. What happened to your new found Inspiration to up the style wow?

Hi Marta, thanks! I actually adore these shoes and they don’t feel like “trying too hard.” 🙂 Over the years, I’ve been working out the balance between items that are versatile, washable, pack well and easy to style, and pieces with a bit more oomph. I’m always on the lookout for those “oomph” pieces that will also travel well. But my primary goal is to keep the wardrobe small enough to fit into a carry-on, yet versatile enough to dress up or down and accommodate a range of temperatures and conditions, and be comfortable. My inspiration to up the style wow is still there, but as they say, “you fight with the army you have,” and of the clothing I currently own, these are the pieces that prior experience has taught me will work well for travel.

In that case, I suggest you refer to The Vivienne Files. She puts together fantastic travel wardrobes for small suitcases and carry on bags. She never seems to fail. I actually found your blog from studying hers. At the least, I would have expected more EF pieces. This would certainly fulfill your packing/ wrinkle free/ laundry requirements? Somehow, the travel wardrobe you have put together with the t-shirts and utility jackets and the sparkle tennies look like what many women might wear to the grocery store or pick up garden supplies, etc. I’m just surprised how different the clothes are from what you model for everyday life.

Une réponse parfaite.

Une reponse parfaite, goes here.

I just came back after a month in Italy. I hope your white shoes don’t get too dirty! The cobblestones would be too rough on heels, but Bon Viaggio. Just one puzzlement…the pink tshirt. NO! You will not be taken seriously. I am of a certain age and live in Europe.

The pink tee is the worst. I was in Rome in September and for the life of me I don’t know where these wardrobe ideas came from here. By the way I don’t wear black much so I get tired of that line of reason too. Actually my hair is my issue thin and fly away but awful worn short. Any thoughts or suggestions? I also don’t understand why a style blogger is worried so much about what everyone else is wearing. Sincere thoughts on style and travel issues.

I’m still grappling with what and how to pack for Europe in mid-July wi a long Mediterranean cruise. I’m thinking a medium sized bag I can check and not trying to stuff so much into a carry on for three weeks. Will probably base my choices on navy and white, with a few bright linen tops. I love my EF clothing but I think wearing a topper will be too much in July in Venice and Rome. I do like the rain jacket younposted, but I will probably just bring my tried and true Northface rain jacket that I can wear over a sweater if it’s too cool on board the ship in the evenings.

I’m going to bring woolite packs and a portable clothesline and a microfiber towel to suck water out for hand washing and we may have to have laundry done on board the ship.

Thanks for the tips!

Linda, why not bring a beautiful shawl to drape around your shoulders oh, and don’t forget some large, dramatic earrings to complete your evening look

Honestly! A wonderful cruise…and you are planning to throw on the old tried and true North Face jacket every night…..don’t people want to feel special…..as well as comfortable…. having such a grand experience?

Susan, Do you have any posts as to how you specifically pack your clothes into the packing cubes ? Roll, or fold, or pack multiple items together ? I think you are casually chic, which is a form of elegance in my book !

Hi Sherry, I don’t really have a single system. I tend to roll tee shirts and fold sweaters, scarves and knit pants to fit the cube shape and size.

I’m working on a capsule wardrobe for the month of August in the UK. We will be traveling to three places by train and I don’t want bulky luggage. You offer so much great inspiration. Question: somewhere I saw you posted a place where you buy your pajamas. I want to go back to that site. Can you please post again?

I have followed your blog for a few years and have enjoyed many of your shopping finds. I just finished a cruise of the Adriatic coast, where my suitcase was dropped into the Aegean Sea while we were boarding the ship. Lessons learned: 1- everything that was sealed in a Ziploc bag or was under a drycleaning bag was perfectly dry. Everything else was soaked,. 2- Because I went “carry-on”, I had neglected to put the emergency socks, underwear and shirt in my backpack, as I would have if I had checked my suitcase. The casualties are my curling iron and my ballet flats. The ship’s staff did my laundry and were quite helpful.

I had saved this post and now that I am packing for a trip to London and Scotland, I realize how brilliant it is. Thanks!

How To Pack A Fall 2022 Travel Capsule Wardrobe For Europe

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

The calendar may say Fall but that doesn’t always mean temperatures dip into brisk territory. Cool mornings and evenings and warm afternoons require versatile and lightweight travel layers. A well planned travel capsule wardrobe for Fall will help you be prepared for just about anything!

Traveling with only carry-on luggage is important, now more than ever. The risk of luggage getting lost is up over 20% since last year. The best way to avoid this mini travel disaster is to pack a travel capsule wardrobe and pack a carry-on bag only. Use this sample capsule as a guide for planning your travel wardrobe.

The pieces in this capsule can stand alone or are meant to coordinate with other layers. This travel capsule wardrobe can take you from 7 days to 1 month or more of travel. That is the beauty of the travel capsule and why I’m completely obsessed with the concept. Even in you aren’t traveling to Europe use this as a template to help you plan your own travel capsule wardrobe. To see how to put the outfits together, read this post.

TIPS TO PACK A TRAVEL CAPSULE WARDROBE FOR FALL IN EUROPE

Light layers for fall travel.

Choose lightweight clothing that layers easily. This capsule relies on lightweight layers like t-shirts, a button down, light cardigan and a blazer. Thin cotton, rayon, tencel, silk and thin merino wool or cashmere are the types of fabrics you should pack. Check the weather for the dates of your trip and select clothing items that work for the range of expected temperatures.

Wearing and packing lightweight layers help you be prepared for a wide range of fall temperatures. This will allow you to pack light and stay warm, no matter what the weather or activity of the day may be. Layers can be broken down into base layers (long sleeves/pants), mid-layers (think sweaters) and outer layers (jackets).

Pack Neutral Colors

Yes, you’ve heard it many times. To pack a capsule wardrobe you need to stick to a color palette. The EASIEST way to do this is to choose neutrals and add in color with accessories or prints.

Shoes first, outfits later

The most important element of your travel capsule wardrobe is your shoes. Ideally, you are only packing 2 pairs at most 3 pairs. For this capsule, I’ve included 3 pairs but you could easily pack only 2 of the shoes shown and be fine.

The shoes included are a boot which is perfect for day to night travel activities, Europe isn’t that formal so a nice boot will get you through most travel scenarios. A good walking or fashion sneaker is now a travel “must have” for me, I can’t imagine a trip where I wouldn’t pack them and they are widely worn in Europe. I threw in the loafer because they are on trend right for Fall 2022 and are also versatile footwear that can go casual or dressed up.

My preference is a boot and a sneaker. Travel in Europe demands a walk able shoe and by walk able I mean that you and your shoes can withstand 10-20,000 steps a day comfortably. With that in mind, it may help to plan your travel outfits around your shoes.

Accesssorize

Use accessories to add some color to a palette of neutrals. Editing accessories to specific travel outfits that you have planned will keep you from overpacking. Keep jewelry minimal and never pack anything you wouldn’t want to loose.

Whether you’re planning on spending the fall in Europe or just looking to refresh your wardrobe, these tips will help you get ready for your trip. A fall travel capsule should be versatile enough to take you from day to night. This sample capsule shows great ways to keep your outfits flexible and fun. A follow-up outfit post is coming soon! Happy packing!

A Summer Capsule Wardrobe Will Simplify Your Packing Process

Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and lightweight linen dresses to walking sandals and packable beach totes, you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane, Lululemon, Banana Republic, and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your item of choice.

Build your summer capsule wardrobe:

The breathable tank top, the perfect short, the linen pant, the classic button-down, the basic tee, the midi dress, the midi skirt, the exercise dress, the white sneaker, the walking sandal, the comfortable heel, the quality bathing suit, the packable tote.

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I own it in multiple colors). Nike and Lululemon make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. High-waisted, light wash options are ideal for hot summer days and pair well with just about any top in your suitcase.

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

Every traveler needs a go-to tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). Cotton tees from Everlane, Skims, True Classic, and Cuts are breathable and lightweight, making them year-round staples for every type of packing list . No matter where I'm headed, whether it's a beach trip in Miami or a cabin getaway in Vermont, I have at least two comfy tees in my weekender .

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool , or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down will keep you cool and covered.

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Abercrombie's linen blend dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus, Farm Rio, and Banana Republic. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

Equally elegant and comfortable, a midi skirt can be dressed up or down with a pair of low heels, sneakers, or sandals. A skirt like this elevates an otherwise simple look and can be reworn endlessly throughout a trip with any of your favorite tanks, tees, or blouses. We love these chic styles from Free People, Banana Republic, and Cuyana, but for something under $40, Amazon brand The Drop's high-waisted skirt is a great staple.

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a cute daytime outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do, a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel and whatever comes next. For practicality and comfort, I love ones that have built-in shorts underneath, like the Outdoor Voices style.

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our team's favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for each.

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without causing blisters, but that still leaves you looking put together. These options below from Rothy's, Olukai, Birkenstock, and Teva can take you from the pool to lunch to sightseeing around town. Comfortable, versatile, and packable, a good walking sandal is simply a must.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings or special events you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in. Bonus points for block heels and mules—both styles are easier to walk in and provide decent stability on uneven ground.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece or high-waisted set. Some of our favorite men's swim trunks are from Todd Snyder and Lacoste, but we have plenty more options where that came from.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

A packable tote bag that you can bring to the beach, shopping, or to the hotel pool will always come in handy. When I'm low on suitcase space, I prefer one that can lay completely flat—like Rothy's Lightweight Tote. These roomy, beachy bags all fit a day's worth of essentials, including a beach towel , water bottle, and lots of sunscreen .

In the past few years I’ve fallen into the bad habit of overpacking, whether it’s a three-day weekend getaway or a week-long excursion to the mountains. But for summer 2024 I am determined to be smarter about the way I pack, and that effort all begins with a summer travel capsule wardrobe. “Having a capsule wardrobe you can mix and match with abandon is really the secret to only ever using a carry-on ,” shared my friend Shazia, who travels on average 12 weeks out of the year for work. “You’ve got to be able to make the most of every item in your suitcase—and no single-use pieces!” But what exactly does this magical mix-and-match summer capsule look like?

The specifics of any summer travel capsule wardrobe will change depending on where you’re going and what you plan to do there, but the basic idea remains the same: Only pack items that can all be paired with one another to create a range of outfits using as few pieces as possible. Those who’ve seen TikTok videos espousing the 333 packing method know all you really need is three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes, and you’ll wind up with 21 looks. For a city excursion, this might mean packing three pairs of pants/shorts and a variety of comfortable walking shoes , whereas a tropical adventure might require dresses that can double as beach cover-ups and sandals that can go from day to night . Read on for all my best tips on how to build your ideal summer travel capsule wardrobe, and the ten items that can see you through just about any vacation you have planned this season.

How to create a summer travel capsule wardrobe.

Stick with One Color Palette

For a lot of folks, the easiest color palette is going to be neutral hues—black, white, beige, navy, forest green, etc.—but if you’re someone who really loves color, you can absolutely shake things up and add in some brighter pops. Just be sure that whatever colors you go with, that every piece can be worn with every other piece. This will ensure you can really maximize your outfit options.

Start with Shoes

Shoes are perhaps the most important part of a travel capsule wardrobe and are dictated by the types of activities you’ll be doing on your trip. In general, I find packing one cute sneaker and one walkable sandal is sufficient for summer vacations, but if you’re planning on exploring rocky beaches you’ll likely want to add a water shoe . Or, if you’re going out for a celebratory dinner you might want to add a pair of fun heels. Try to limit your footwear options as much as possible, then start building your outfits from the bottom up to match.

Then Bottoms

Your next most important category is bottoms. These should be simple and versatile, like jeans, linen pants or an easy midi skirt, so that you can dress them up or down with a variety of tops. You should be able to get through a week-long vacay with just three bottoms, so really try to limit these to basic essentials.

Go Ham with Small Accessories

The easiest way to make a repeat outfit feel fresh? With the help of standout accessories. Jewelry , scarves, sunglasses and hair clips all take up minimal space so you can toss multiple options into your suitcase to play with. Pack a few different styles of earrings, a pair of colorful sunnies in addition to classic black or tortoiseshell, a floral neckerchief or a full arm stack of bangles to accessorize your capsule wardrobe for all sorts of occasions.

Embrace Versatility

Everything in your travel capsule wardrobe should be able to be worn with multiple other items in your suitcase. If you just bought a fabulous new top but it can really only be worn with black, high-waist jeans, it’s likely best to leave it at home this time around. Double check that all your top options can be worn with all, or at least most, of your bottom options and shoe options before you go packing them all into your carry-on to guarantee you’re making the most of your precious cargo space.

How to Travel with a Carry-On Only (Because It *Can* Be Done)

teva walkable sandals summer travel capsule wardrobe

1. Walkable Sandals

Time to show off that pedicure with a pair of comfortable sandals you can wear all day long, whether you plan to explore a whole city or post-up poolside. Opt for a pair of sandals that feel nicer or dressier than basic flip-flops so you can style them up for a nice dinner too. And while black, brown or beige will likely be easier to pair with other items, I love the idea of using your shoes to add some color to your ‘fit with a bright yellow or bold red.

2. Chic Sneakers

Dr. scholl’s.

Comfortable sneakers are key to keeping your feet happy on a full day of city exploration, but rather than reach for your chunkiest walking shoes, I highly suggest investing in a pair of sleeker kicks with a fashion-forward twist. The Dr. Scholl’s Time Off sneakers pictured above have been going viral on TikTok for their supreme comfort and support, all without sacrificing style. And Wellness Director Sarah Stiefvater swears by the trendy Adidas Samba for travel all throughout the year. And don’t forget to pack some cushy socks to go with whatever kicks you choose.

Some folks swear by their denim cut-offs, but I think linen or cotton shorts are a more versatile option that are every bit as comfortable. A simple silhouette  in a neutral hue  can be more easily dressed up for dinners or other events than denim, and khaki, linen and cotton twill are lighter weight and more breathable as an added bonus.

4. Lightweight Pants

I don’t think I’ve ever gone on a trip and not packed jeans, but for summer I like to prioritize lighter weight materials to give my travel capsule wardrobe an elevated twist that’s just as comfortable as my beloved denim. Linen trousers are a fabulous option because the fabric is breathable, but the silhouette is undeniably polished. You can also try “made for travel” materials like this pair of Aday pants that can be tied in a variety of styles, won’t wrinkle and are made of a quick-drying fabric that’s also eco-friendly.

5. A Breezy Skirt

Swap the fitted miniskirts for something much more freeing, like this A-line linen number from Boden or a silky slip skirt. I find midi lengths to be the most versatile—they still allow for plenty of air flow around your legs during the day, and are easier to dress up for a fancy night out—but if you adore a mini just be sure to opt for silhouettes that will give you enough range of motion to feel comfortable all day long.

6. A Button-Up Shirt

Opt for a shirt that has a looser fit for more versatility so that it can double as a lightweight jacket or cover-up. And be sure to choose a button-up  made from lightweight, breathable materials (these are not your pressed work shirts) so you won’t feel stifled in the heat.

7. Tees and Tank Tops

Tank tops, T-shirts and long-sleeve tees are staples I just can’t live without, no matter the destination. Be sure to choose options that can be layered under or over other pieces (like a tank dress or button-up shirt). I find the best options are made of natural fibers, but feel free to invest in whatever colors or even patterns you like best

8. A Silk Cami

Silk camisoles are my secret weapon when it comes to looking chic and staying cool in the summer. They instantly elevate the look of casual summer basics, like denim shorts or linen pants, and are far more posh than a cotton tank. Plus, silk is wonderfully breathable and won’t show sweat as easily as, say, a polyester or cotton blouse. Simply tuck it into some high-waist jeans or an equally breathable silk slip skirt, add some glam jewelry and you’ll be ready for a night out on the town.

9. Versatile Dresses

My friend Shazia told me she avoids packing any single-use items unless she has a specific event she’s packing for (like a destination wedding or concert ), which for dresses means really paying attention to versatility. You’re going to want to stick with frocks that can be worn for day or night, like a black linen mini dress or a floral-print midi. They should work just as well with sandals as they do with sneakers . This is also where that arsenal of accessories can come into play to style your dress for any and all occasions.

10. A Convertible Handbag

Handbags are my kryptonite when it comes to packing—I always want to have options but they take up so much space! So my new go-to travel bags are convertible handbags like the Madewell number pictured above. It comes with an adjustable strap that can be worn as a crossbody or a shoulder bag, and it also comes with a removable top handle for a cute nighttime look.

More Items to Consider

As mentioned above, the easiest way to shake up a repeat outfit is with bold accessories, like statement earrings , a bandana , colorful sunglasses or a fun hair clip , so feel free to add a myriad of extras to your suitcase. You may also want to add a warmer layer for after-dark activities or to wear on a plane. Opt for something easy and lightweight, like a denim jacket , oversize blazer or cashmere knit that pairs well with all your planned outfits. If your summer plans involve ample time at the beach or pool, look for a cover-up that can double as regular clothing to get even more use out of your capsule wardrobe.

ChatGPT Built Me the Perfect Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Travel — Shop the 12 Items From Just $20

Score perfect white linen pants, breezy dresses, comfortable walking shoes, and more at Amazon.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m skeptical of the entire idea of AI, but when I realized that the technology could help me with the one thing I hate the most, well, I was all ears. What is that one thing, you might ask? Packing . I find the entire task to be incredibly overwhelming, and I’m often left with the pervasive fear that I’ve forgotten something important. So, as a test run, I took to ChatGPT to build the perfect packing list that I could use for summer travel — and it did not disappoint.

With options broken down into categories such as tops, bottoms, shoes, and dresses, I was able to get a clearer picture of exactly what I needed to make a multitude of outfits with as few pieces as possible, and now I’m more aware than ever of the holes in my summer wardrobe. If you’ve found yourself in a similar dilemma, keep reading to find the 12 essentials from Amazon that ChatGPT recommends adding to your suitcase for your next summer trip, so you never wind up forgetting the basics ever again.

Linen Pants

Buy on Amazon

Combine the comfort of pajama pants with the style of trousers in these effortless, loose-fitting linen pants that fit on your packing list for everything from a beach vacation to an international city excursion. The ruched waistband of these pants make them supremely comfortable for wear during a long-haul flight, while the relaxed fit of the legs will never constrict movement or make you too warm. I can already see them becoming my go-to base for every look I wear during my next trip — and they’re only $32.

Striped Button-down

Your ideal packing list should also include a more fun, patterned shirt to add dimension to your wardrobe, and this striped button-down is another top that you’ll be happy to have packed for your next trip. The cotton blend will feel soft and gentle against the skin while remaining lightweight and airy, and I’m sure I’ll be able to create endless outfit options with it without having to go overboard on my packing. ChatGPT recommended a striped top of any kind, but the carefree nature of this blouse made it an incredibly flattering option that I couldn't resist.

White Sneakers

It’s no secret that our editors at T+L can’t get enough of white sneakers for traveling, so it came as no surprise that AI was in agreement that they’re an obvious choice for one of the two pairs of shoes you might need on your next trip. This ultra-cushy pair from Dr. Scholls that went viral on TikTok is on my radar as a new addition to my shoe collection since they boast padded heels and breathable canvas uppers that make them practically perfect for the summertime, taking me from day to night without ever causing blisters. One customer even raved that they walked "50,000 steps in two days" in these sneakers, so I can trust that they're designed with comfort in mind. Best of all, they’ll look great when paired with any of the other pieces in this capsule wardrobe, so I know they’ll get plenty of wear.

Pieces that you can throw on and run out the door in are always going to be major assets while traveling, which is exactly why ChatGPT suggested adding a neutral maxi dress into your suitcase for the days when you want to look your best with minimal effort. This boho-style piece is sure to turn heads even if you’re wearing it during a day of sightseeing or shopping, while the breezy material promises to keep you cool even as the temperatures soar. I’m eyeing the simple black shade, but if you’re looking to get a pop of color into your suitcase, you’re in luck — there are 24 options to choose from.

The most obvious item that should find its way into your summer capsule wardrobe is a comfy loungewear set that you can wear anywhere from the airplane to the city streets, and even to bed (provided you wash it first!). I’m opting for this duo that's a lookalike of the Oprah-loved Spanx AirEssentials sweatsuit as it will keep me looking and feeling cool, and paired with the sneakers or sandals and even a loose-fitting cardigan , this is an outfit that I’ll feel confident sightseeing in. This tracksuit set is made with a rayon blend that will feel as soft as a cloud against my skin, and I especially love the drawstring and elastic waistband so I can achieve a supremely comfortable and relaxed fit with every wear.

Comfortable Sandals

Narrowing down your footwear options for travel is no small feat, but according to AI, a pair of comfortable sandals should not be left out of the running. This supportive pair of Birkenstocks are designed with breathable EVA footbeds that mold to your feet for truly unparalleled comfort, while durable oiled leather straps never rub or chafe, even from the first wear. These sandals are also especially well-suited for traveling since they can be worn while sightseeing or during long hours at the airport — after all, versatility is the name of the game when it comes to your capsule wardrobe.

Bathing Suit

It’s never a bad idea to throw a bathing suit into your suitcase depending on where you’re headed this summer, and this sleek one-piece is my top choice right now considering that the $34 suit has earned a whopping 20,200 five-star ratings at Amazon for it’s flattering fit and comfortable design. The bottom of the swimsuit provides modest coverage which is always a plus, while the adjustable straps provide ample support. So, if you end up signing up for any aquatic activities like surfing or rafting during your next vacation, you’ll be happy to have a one-piece at the ready. Plus, this one-piece doubles as a bodysuit with your linen pants, denim shorts, and midi skirt.

Flowy Midi Skirt

This gorgeous maxi skirt is poised to be the best new addition to your wardrobe for the spring and summer, and with an elasticized waistband, it might just be the most comfortable as well. Landing just above the ankle, this skirt is an ideal length for sightseeing as it won’t drag on the ground, and it even boasts deep pockets which only add to its convenience for wearing on the go. Dress it up with sandals or down with sneakers, but this skirt will make you the best-dressed traveler at any outings you have planned for your next vacation.

Crossbody Bag

When it comes to selecting the purse that you'll be traveling with, it's important to ensure that it will match the majority of your outfits and be convenient and comfortable to wearing while sightseeing. This gorgeous woven bag essentially works as a two-in-one as you can swap out the straps to wear it as either a clutch or a crossbody, while the surprisingly spacious primary pocket has the capacity to hold everything you need for a day out on the town. The neutral brown shade effortlessly enhances anything its paired with (yes, even a white tee and jeans will look elevated), and since it can be worn as a crossbody, there's one additional level of security against theft.

If you’re limiting yourself to only packing two dresses from your summer capsule wardrobe, AI suggests including a flouncy sundress for daytime activities and warmer weather. This effortless number can be worn to a nice dinner or during a day of taking in the sights of a new city, so you’ll never feel ill prepared for any occasion with this tucked into your packing cubes. It’s lightweight and airy so you won’t be bogged down by heavy materials in the sweltering summer heat, and a flattering cinched waist is the icing on the cake of this effortlessly cool and carefree piece.

White T-shirt

Building the perfect capsule wardrobe starts with identifying a white T-shirt with a fit you love, and this flattering scoop neck is a great place to start. A simple base to shape every outfit around, this top can easily be dressed up or down with anything from a maxi skirt to a pair of denim shorts, and at just $20, it’s an affordable addition to your suitcase. This particular shirt is made from a breathable cotton blend that won’t wrinkle easily when packed away, and it’s complete with a relaxed-fitting finish that makes it ideal for layering.

Denim Shorts

Denim shorts will never truly go out of style, which is exactly why AI recommends adding a pair to your packing list for any trip you have planned this summer. I’m loving the fit of this mid-rise Levi's pair that’s simple enough to be worn with any top in my suitcase, plus, the white denim adds some intrigue to my outfits during long sightseeing days. They’re a best-seller at Amazon with more than 19,000 five-star ratings, so I'm sure that even if I wind up wearing them during a long car or train ride, I’ll feel just as good as if I were wearing lounge pants.

Traveling to Europe for more than a week and not sure what or how to pack? You’re in luck! This is exactly the clothing I brought for my 2-week summer trip!

In Part 1 of this series , you’ll find out all the clothing that I packed for Europe in the summer. In the other articles, I discuss my travel shoe choices, luggage, and other essentials. Read Part 2 and Part 3.

Clothing for 2 Weeks in Europe

Table of contents, countries i visited: italy, switzerland, france, england.

During the summer, my mom visited me in England so we could take a 12-day tour around Europe. I had been wanting her to visit for a while, and I’m very grateful that we finally had the chance to spend some time together and travel around Europe.

We went to Rome , Venice , Basel , Paris , and London . (See my trip Itinerary here .) She visited for two weeks, so I wanted to take advantage of having her here and showing her as much as I could. We flew Ryanair and EasyJet, which are two budget airlines in Europe, meaning the baggage restrictions are a lot more strict but we were still able to travel carry-on only for two weeks

This is one of the lightest times that I’ve packed. I’m really happy with everything that I took, and even though I packed light, I still packed a few things that I didn’t end up needing, so it’s possible to overpack even in a carry-on!

carry-on-only-for-2-weeks-in-europe

Weather in June: 55F – 82F (13C – 28C)

Wherever you travel, always check the advance 10-day weather forecast and also the day before you fly. There might be an unexpected heat wave or storm. Don’t underestimate the wind even when it’s sunny.

Also, compare the weather at your destination with the weather you’re used to at home. What feels cold for one person may be hot for another and vice versa.

The weather was slightly varied in June. The hottest weather I experienced was 82F / 31 C in Rome and the coldest weather was 55F / 13C in Paris at night. It even rained a bit in Venice and Paris, too.

Because the majority of my trip would be in hot weather, I mostly packed for the heat and planned to wear dresses on most days. I also brought along a light jacket , merino wool sweater , and  travel pants I could wear together for colder days. This was sufficient for 55F weather (as a Southern California girl, I get cold easily).

For shoes, I wore slip-on sneakers with this outfit and this strategy was perfect! I didn’t need to pack a bunch of stuff I was only going to wear a couple of times.

If you want to play it safe, you can do as I do, and bring layers. Even though I knew it would be warm this trip, I still brought jackets and sweaters. While I didn’t end up using all of them, a couple came in handy.

Compass Rose Packing Cubes

How I Packed My Clothing

When I traveled in Europe for two weeks, I went carry-on only using my Compass Rose Slim Packing Cubes . Since they have numbers on them, it was easy to organize my clothing.

I used the No. 1 cube for my main clothing items, such as tops and dresses, and then use the No. 2 cube for extra items. I put my undergarments and pajamas in the No. 3 packing cube. While I didn’t need to use the No. 4 cube on this trip, I could’ve used it as a shoe bag for my sneakers or sandals.

The packing cubes also helped me fit everything into a smaller carryon bag because I used a packing method I developed where you roll your clothes then compress within the cubes. This method has helped over 20 million women travel carryon only. Learn about it here!

Here is how I packed the clothing I took for Europe in summer and the destinations where I wore the items:

2-weeks-in-europe-packing-list

I packed 2 Tank Dresses, like the one above in grey and black

Packing Cube #1: Main Clothes

For this trip, I used my packing cube #1 for all of the main clothes I wore. In this cube, I packed:

  • Leith body-con tank dress , grey cloudy heather ( similar )

All of these items have fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant, so I folded and rolled each item in this cube.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

Since it was hot out, I spent most of my trip in dresses. My Toad & Co. Sun-Kissed maxi dress has an amazing fabric that is lightweight and moisture-wicking. It dries quickly, and even if it gets crumpled up in the cube, the wrinkles fall out easily. And thanks to the higher neckline, it’s bra friendly. I wore this dress in the Venice heat, and I was comfortable the whole time.

I also packed a Bravissimo dress that was also bra-friendly. It’s just a striped wrap dress of a modest length that I could wear in cathedrals and churches. I wore this a lot in Rome. And my Michael Stars dress, I didn’t even wear.

travel capsule wardrobe europe spring

Lastly, I packed two of the same dress, which may sound weird, but it’s because I love this dress that much. Like this top and black cashmere sweater , these dresses are staples in my wardrobe that I wear over and over again.

They’re easy to wear and comfortable in the Rome heat. The dresses have a very flattering ruching on the side that flaunts your figure without being tight. The classic cut will never go out of style, and they’re available in so many colors if I wanted to mix up my wardrobe. Not only do I love this dress, but so do many of our readers.

Note: the colors in my travel wardrobe are neutrals because of my personal preference. I really like black. You should choose colors that can mix and match but also colors you enjoy wearing. More tips for creating a capsule wardrobe here !

J.Crew Cashmere Sweater in Black

Packing Cube #2: Additional Clothing

In the packing cube #2, I packed a lot of miscellaneous items, some of which I didn’t even end up using on the trip. But, you live and you learn! In this cube, I packed:

My airplane outfit was my tried-and-true  pants and  top , but I wanted to have a second top option, just in case, so I took a lightweight sleeveless top from J. Crew . I also packed two other blouses that I wanted just in case I didn’t want to wear dresses, but I never used them on this trip.

The same goes for the blazer. Ultimately, it was too hot to wear it but I have a habit of bringing two items I can wear as outerwear on any trip. When it got chilly at night, I wore either my  sweater or my jacket . I didn’t need a heavier jacket.

These are the best merino wool sweaters according to our readers!

2-weeks-in-europe-packing-list

Zella Live In High Waist Leggings

Packing Cube #3: Pajamas, Underwear

My packing cube #3 usually isn’t entirely full, especially for summer trips where I don’t need heavy duty pajamas. For this cube, I packed:

  • Black Strapless bra

I start by packing the pajamas , since they’re the largest. The lightweight leggings are great for lounging, and I can also use them as pajama bottoms if it gets colder at night or the A/C is on. Additionally, if I wanted to do a workout or yoga class, I could.

I like to take two bras so they work with all of my tops and dresses. I lay the bras flat and along the edges of the packing cube. Then, in the cups of the bras, I put all of my underwear .

I like having a variety of underwear styles. Some provide tummy control while others are great for tighter dresses where you don’t want to see any underwear lines.

Zip it up, and you’re done with the final cube!

Underneath my bra, I wore my RFID Secret Bra Wallet ( similar ). This bra stash is an anti-theft travel product that’s part of my own travel line: Compass Rose. It’s RFID lined for digital protection, and it actually has an extra long bra strap that allows women of all bra sizes to wear it. I wear it on the side of my bra, underneath my arm, and I use this instead of a money belt.

Here are more of the best money belts and anti-theft travel accessories!

The Outfit I Rewear on Travel Days

It’s so important to have a comfy travel outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for each travel day, whether I’m flying or taking a train. I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me for almost any travel day, regardless of where I am.

Loveappella Faux Wrap Top

Drape Short Sleeve Top

Similar to my favorite top is the Loveappella Faux Wrap Top . I love it because it’s incredibly easy to wear. A faux-wrap front flatters on this soft and versatile jersey top cinched with a saucy tie at the hip. It looks a little bit dressy, but it’s also comfortable, so it’s great for travel days.

Black Pants for Travel

I paired my top and jacket with black travel pants like the one featured above. I pretty much live in jeans at home, but pants like this pants are more comfortable, so they’re perfect for travel days. Not only did I wear these on planes and trains, but I also for sightseeing, as well, because they’re so comfortable and versatile.

Lightweight Jacket

A lightweight jacket is one of my staple jackets. I’m obsessed with it, I love i t , and I take it absolutely everywhere. During my European adventure, I not only wore it on travel days, but I also kept it in my purse during sightseeing days to wear in the evenings.

My Secret to Traveling Light: Laundry

For our trip, we flew Ryanair from London to Rome . We stayed in Rome for three nights, took a train to Venice where we spent two nights, flew on EasyJet to Basel to visit my cousin in Switzerland for three nights, and finally took the train from Basel to Paris for three nights. We finished the trip with a train ride from Paris to London.

How did I make so few items last for so many destinations and days? Laundry .

In Rome and Venice, we stayed in an Airbnb , and in Basel, we stayed with my cousin, so we had access to a washing machine throughout the trip. This was a lifesaver!

We did laundry every day after we came back to our accommodation following a day of sightseeing. It didn’t cause any delays in our day. We simply threw our clothing in the washer when we went out to dinner, and then dried it overnight. As it was really hot while we were traveling, the clothing dried very quickly.

Tip: Many Airbnbs that have laundry available also provide detergent. However, even if it doesn’t, you can take small travel laundry pods with you that won’t take up any space.

I know it’s been a while but I can’t find the Michael Stars top with adjustable sleeves ANYWHERE! Any help finding one would be appreciated, I’ve scoured the interwebs!

Alex

Hi Renee, sadly I think it has been completely discontinued for a while now. 😢

Marla Baswell

Used this as inspiration for my 2 weeks in Greece. We just returned and I have never been happier with my packing job. My husband’s bag was busting at the zipper and I was super organzied. Thank you!

Renee Fortuna

Seriously – where have you been all my life!! Love love love all the great info here!

Mary Niebergall

Every single item I SEARCHED FROM YOUR LIST, WAS UNAVAILABLE!!!! ARGGH.

Hi Mary, I am sorry about that. Unfortunately this recap was based on a trip Alex took back in 2018, obviously since then styles have changed and items are no longer available.

Which items were you interested in particular? If you let us know then we could help you find suitable alternatives.

Hope this helps.

Yvonne

You can still find the Leith dresses on nordstromrack.com. I just bought two (5.21.22)

Debbie

Hi Alex, Do you have a packing list for a 2 week trip for December in Europe. (Austria). We are mostly staying in air bnb

Hi Debbie, thank you for reaching out. Have a look at TFG’s signature packing lists for ideas for a capsule wardrobe and how many clothing items you could pack: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/functional-and-fashion-packing-list/ The packing lists show you how to pack light and have the right clothes no matter the destination or the length of the journey. For more suggestions to help you with your packing, have a look at our ultimate guide to packing for Europe in the winter: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/europe-in-winter/ I would also highly recommend that you join TFG’s free facebook community and post any questions you have there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous group of helpful female travelers that have the best packing advice and recommendations to share. Hope this helps answer your question. Have an incredible trip! ?

Sonia

Hi Alex, love your tips and clips but.. Any chance you could make some for down under where the issue is there is mixed weather and only 7kg total for carry on.

I can pack my carry on but usually go over this weight even with my very light weight Samsonite case .

Hi Sonia, thank you for reaching out. We do have this post full of tips to help you pack for the 7kg allowance: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/baggage-allowance-how-to-pack/

There are also more tips here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-pack-in-5kg/

Hope this helps you with your future packing!

Thank you for sharing your travel insights with other female travelers! I have been following you for years. I was impressed with your sharing of information to support others female travels from the first time I read your blog. When we (females) lift each other up, we all rise together.

Annie B.

When do you use the travelon bag versus the RM backpack? We are going to Italy this summer and I’m trying to only do my Motherlode with packing cubes and debating between getting the travelon or the RM or both as my sightseeing purse. I love the look of the RM but concerned about safety while in crowds and museums. TIA

Hi Annie, I would always use my Rebecca Minkoff purse over the Travelon simply because it’s truly the perfect bag for me. I don’t really own other purses and have worn it to death. I took the Travelon purse to Europe based on the reader recommendations. I wanted to test it out for myself. Although it was an awesome bag, I prefer the backpack style the RM Julian offers. I’d recommend only to use the Travelon bag if you have a concern about theft. Having the bag definitely offers peace of mind. I hope this helps! ?

Margaret

great article and super helpful! Wondering what size in the Anatomie Kenya Safari Jacket you are wearing? Thank you!!!

Hi Margaret, so please you enjoyed the article!! ❤️ I have the size XS. Unless I’m buying Petite sizing, I normally I buy XS in all my jackets so they fit well across my back and shoulders (but they don’t usually close well in the front). You can read my review of the Anatomie Kenya jacket here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/these-travel-jackets-are-selling-like-crazy/ Hope this helps! ?

Thank you SO much for replying to me – I really appreciate it. You have the most informational and great travel videos and posts. Thank you for all that you do for us travelers!

You are more than welcome! Thank you so much for your lovely comment, this means the world to me! ?❤️?

Laura

I’ve really enjoyed your series for packing in Europe. My husband and I are traveling to London the last week of May/1st week of June. I love the hat that you show in your pictures, and I wondered if you could tell me where i could find it?! I hadn’t even thought of bringing a hat until I saw your photos!

Thanks! Laura

Hi Laura, I brought the hat from H&M earlier last year. I am not sure if they still stock it. Hope you have an awesome time on your trip to London!!

Thanks Alex!

We are excited about our trip. My mum is English so we are also getting to visit relatives which will be fun.

Your packing lists and tips are so helpful especially for someone who have never traveled abroad before.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much Laura, so pleased you have found the packing lists helpful, this means the world to us!! Sounds really exciting, have a phenomenal time!

Kristi

How about in may. Spring?

Hi Kristi, thank you for reaching out! If you are planning a trip to Europe, have a look at this 10 step guide which is a useful place to start planning your packing: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/ For suggestions for what you could pack if you are visiting Europe in the spring, have a read of this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/europe-in-spring/ Last year there was a heatwave in Europe which started in May so the temperatures are not all that predictable, so the best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing. I hope this helps answer your question. Happy travels!

Read the original article on Purewow .

The Top Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Items at a Glance

Dr. Scholl’s
