The Definition of a Domestic Flight

The determining factor is where your destination is. For flights, it is rather simple.

If you take off in one country and land in another, that is not a domestic flight. If you flew to Alaska and had a brief stopover in Canada, that would still be a domestic flight.

If you were in Mexico, and took a flight from Cancun to Mexico City, for instance, that would be a domestic flight. If you flew from Los Angeles to Mexico City, and then on to Cancun, that would not be domestic because you started in one country and landed in another.

If you do not leave the airport, and your final destination is in the same country where you departed from, that is domestic travel, even if you landed briefly in another country.

What about Domestic Flights in Europe?

Europe  is a different matter with the establishment of the European Union. The Schengen Agreement, allows people to travel to and from 26 countries in Europe without a passport.

Travel from Paris to Hamburg, Germany, for instance, is considered domestic travel even though you cross a country’s borders.

Ireland is not part of the agreement, so someone from another country would not be considered for domestic travel.

As long as you are a citizen of a Schengen Agreement area, you may travel to any other country that is part of that agreement, and it will be considered domestic travel.

If you are an American traveling to Europe, it is an international trip, whether by plane or boat.

However, once you are in Europe, traveling to another country is considered domestic. An American who has entered Amsterdam legally, for instance, could then fly to Paris on a domestic flight.

What is domestic travel in the United States?

Domestic travel in the United States means traveling to any area that is considered a possession of the country.

Flying to Hawaii, or to Alaska, is still domestic travel. Puerto Rico is part of the United States as well, so going there is still domestic travel.

You’ve got a trip planned that requires you to leave the country, and you’ve never traveled abroad. Naturally, you have some questions that need to be answered before you can even begin to plan your trip, like what is the difference between a domestic and an international flight?

As a family, we've been on our share of flights. Some international and some domestic. We have put together a handy guide to help you address your concerns and a whole lot more.

First, let's talk about definitions.

What is a domestic flight?

A domestic flight is one that stays within the same country while an international flight is one that arrives in a different country.

What is an international flight?

If you live in the US, then a domestic flight would be one between one US state to another, or even within the same state.

If your landing destination is outside the borders of the USA, then you're on an international flight.

Most Americans have flown domestically at some point in their lives. After all, it is a big country. Unless you're willing to drive for many hours - and sometimes days - you'll need to board a plane when traveling between stats.

With that in mind, this post will focus mostly on international flights, and how they differ from domestic flights.

International Airports 

Your trip begins with an airport... so let's start this post there as well.

If you're visiting a new country, different from the one where your flight originated, then your flight is going to land at an international airport .

The international airport where you land will ask to see your passport, and possibly a visitor's visa.

They will ask you a few questions about your trip before letting you enter into their country. It's very rare but some people may be refused entry to a country at that point and sent on a flight back home (or to another destination).

That nice guy at the bottom of the escalators was welcoming Americans back home and directing everyone to the right lines for border control. There are always separate lines for returning citizens and visitors.

Domestic vs. International Airports

International airports allow you to travel all over the world, as opposed to domestic airports, which generally only allow flights within the same country.

The key difference here is that international airports are set up for border control and customs inspections .

With longer runways - to accommodate larger planes - and larger terminals, international airports are often also much more extensive than their domestic counterparts.

While it’s true that some domestic airports may have “international” in their title, these types of flights are often handled on an irregular (and sometimes very rare) basis and may not suit your schedule.

Domestic airports are built in a manner conducive to more localized travel, and as such, they cannot accommodate consistent international flights.

International airports typically handle both international and domestic flights.

Domestic airports typically only handle domestic flights.

With nearly 20,000 airports in the United States alone, you may feel overwhelmed with the sheer volume to choose from.

You may still need to use the services of one of those 20,000 if you choose to layover to a larger airport from a smaller, domestic one – and you may want to do this for many reasons – but you will mostly want to focus on international airports starting. You can then plan around the one you’ve chosen if need be.

Consider Passenger Volume

You may also want to consider passenger volume to help in decreasing your wait time and any potential delays.

However, keep in mind that the large airport where passenger volume is consistently high will be better equipped to handle all those people and suitcases. 

In other words, it's the unexpected peaks in passenger volume that you should be concerned about. 

Airports in the summer of 2022

We're back to traveling, now that covid restrictions have been lifted. That's both good and bad. 

Airports are understaffed because most of their personnel were laid off during the early stages of the pandemic. 

Airports and airlines simply don't have enough employees to handle all of the passengers and luggage they're seeing. 

It's not just in London.

This is a worldwide problem. Over the last two months, both my son and parents were on (different) international flights.

My son was lucky. He only experienced a single 8-hour delay on his way back from London. It was nerve-wracking, as there was no communication from the airline (did I mention understaffed?) but at least he finally made it on that flight back home).

My parents weren't so lucky.

They were flying from Tel Aviv to Chicago. After standing in long lines at the airport, they finally boarded their night flight. They even texted us this picture of my Dad on board the plane!

Then an hour later, they texted this picture -

They were asked to de-board the plane because of a minor technical issue. With no airport crew around to fix the issue right away, the flight had to be grounded.

They were told they would leave on the following flight the next day.

Then another email arrived, letting them know this was not happening. So they were moved to yet another flight. 

Two days later, the third flight finally took off - only an hour later than planned.

If you're planning any flight in 2022, at the very least, be extremely patient and be prepared for the worse.

But, back to more general information about international vs domestic flights.

Shopping at an International Airport

If you forgot to pack something – or you wish to stop and enjoy what they have to offer – all major airports include stores of many kinds, including gift shops, restaurants, and food courts.

And here's the thing -

International airports typically feature duty-free shops!

That's where luxury items and amenities can be purchased tax-free. By selling mostly to tourists who will be taking these items out of the country, many local and national taxes are waived.

What else is there to do in an international airport?

You will generally find WiFi services available, as well as locations for currency exchange.

Not only will you find the standard fare of shops and eateries, but some international airports also provide areas where passengers can rest and even take a nap.

Those areas are designated for those who may have become stranded or laid over. These days, they are usually reserved for business and first-class passengers.

More often, however, you will find hotels on the premises to allow for comfort and privacy. Anyone can use those - if they're willing to pay for their stay.

Airports are often massive (more on that below), and as such, you may find yourself in need of on-site transportation. Thankfully, you will often find services for just that, such as rail networks, curbside pickup, taxis, shuttle services, and buses.

If you need to leave your personal or rental car at the airport, many have parking garages for your convenience. This is highly beneficial if you don’t want to bother with an airport pickup or taxi service upon arriving home.

International Flights FAQ

Here are some of the questions people often ask about international flights. 

Do You Need a Passport to Book an International Flight?

Yes. Any time that you are traveling abroad, a passport is mandatory and required . You must also display your passport to enter the country to which you are traveling.

In some cases, you would also need a visa. 

As long as your passport is valid and in good condition, you don't need any additional forms of ID.

Do They Serve Meals on International Flights?

That depends. The answer used to be "absolutely", and meals are still featured on most transatlantic flights.

However, during shorter international flights, for example from one European country to another, they often serve only snacks and beverages.

On a low-cost flight, international or otherwise, you can purchase snacks and drinks but they're not included in the price of your flight ticket (unless you fly business or first-class - in which case, it depends).

The class in which you are traveling plays a significant role in the quality of your meals. We've only traveled in the economy until now. This is what a hot meal looks like when it arrives -

Nothing to write home about, in terms of the culinary experience.

However, I always say it's a welcome distraction on a long flight. Handling everything in such a small space is challenging and in a way, sort of entertaining.

When meals are served, you usually get a choice of vegan, vegetarian, kosher, low-sodium, and diabetic meals.

These all have to be pre-ordered when you book your flight or during the online check-in phase. If you don't tell them in advance, the airline won't have a special meal ready for you. Kids under 12 usually have their own kid's meals.

Do They Provide Blankets on International Flights?

In our experience, you do on transatlantic flights. Since airplanes are often rather chilly forms of transportation, it is generally standard fare to receive a blanket, as well as a pillow for use during the flight.

You're not supposed to keep the blanket though. They take them at the end of each flight and - presumably - wash and sanitize them for the next round of passengers.

Some airlines really pamper you on transatlantic flights. On our flight to New York with Azerbaijan Airlines , we each received a small blue bag that had earplugs, an eye mask, a small toothbrush and toothpaste, and even a pair of blue socks!

Do You Get WiFi on International Flights?

While WiFi availability is growing rapidly in air travel, it isn’t available on all flights and with all carriers.

You will first need to check with your airline to ensure that they offer it, and then find out if your flight path has it as well. You can do this by looking at the coverage map on your potential airline’s website.

Not only will this service cost you, but it may also be limited in its functionality. Don't assume you'll be able to carry a Zoom call while in the air. You're likely to experience a relatively slow connection, so downloading your videos beforehand is recommended.

What Is a Transatlantic Flight?

As its name implies, transatlantic flights travel across the Atlantic Ocean, connecting passengers to the Americas (North, Central, and South), as well as the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

Depending on weather conditions, transatlantic routes – called North Atlantic Tracks (NATs) – change daily to compensate for any issues that weather may cause for aircraft.

For passenger convenience, eastbound flights are usually in operation during the night, while ones westbound operate during the day. Approximately 2,500 aircraft make transatlantic flights daily.

Transatlantic Flight Times

As mentioned above, the night-time hours of an eastbound flight will generally make landfall between 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM UTC. Conversely, daytime westbound flights will usually make landfall between the hours of 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM UTC. It can certainly vary though, so carefully check your tickets.

Transatlantic flights are obnoxiously long too. 

To be honest, I dread these flights. But, as long as you're prepared, they are eventually over. 

My tip: Stay hydrated. Yes, this means more bathroom trips, but getting up and walking around every hour or two is a good thing.

Should I Lock My Luggage When Flying Internationally?

For your peace of mind, you can lock your checked luggage when flying to any destination, provided you use a TSA-approved lock.

TSA agents carry master keys that will unlock all approved luggage locks if they feel your luggage requires extra screening.

And don't assume that your carry-on luggage will be with you at all times. The last people boarding the plane may be asked to send their carry-ons in the cargo hold. So, you may want to lock those smaller items as well, or at least have a lock on them.

By the way, a TSA-approved lock does not guarantee anything once you're outside the US. 

When flying internationally, once you make landfall outside of the United States, local agents won't have those TSA master keys.

If they feel the need to look inside your luggage, you may run the risk of having your lock cut off for them to complete their inspection. 

That's why we prefer to keep our suitcases unlocked on international flights. 

Tips for Making International Travel Easier

Here are a few quick tips that could help you when traveling internationally.

1. Passports and visas

Lastly, and this is a big one, find out ahead of time if the country in which you are traveling has any entrance and exit fees .

That’s right; some won’t allow you to do either without paying a fee.

If that is the case, make sure that you have cash set aside for such a situation, or an international credit card open for international transactions.

2. Make copies of your passport

Take clear photos of your passport's main page. Keep them accessible on the cloud and also carry a printed copy with you.

Leaving a copy with someone back home is always a good idea too (a digital copy should be enough).

3. Carry some local money (and/or a credit card)

Talk to your credit card company to make sure your card will work overseas while traveling. If traveling to Europe, you may need to upgrade to a card with the new chip technology. We usually prefer to carry some cash for the first days on us, just in case.

4. Vaccinations

Most western countries don't require any vaccinations except for covid shots. Yes, one more thing to check these days.

And consider yourself lucky because when flying in 2021, you had to produce proof of vaccination and also a negative covid test. If you could travel at all, that is.

As for other vaccines. 

You don’t want to go through all the steps of planning for a trip only to find out at the last minute that you don’t have proper vaccinations. Check with your doctor well in advance to ensure that you’re up-to-date.

5. Carry your valuables and medications on you

Don't send your medications in your suitcase. Have at least a week's supply in the bag that you're carrying with you. The same goes for any valuables. Luggage can and does get lost.

We also carry a change of underwear and one set of clothes for each person in the trolley that we take on board the plane. Meds and everything that is absolutely necessary for the flight itself stays in our handbags or even pockets.

And again, some airlines may ask you to send your trollies too, right at the gate, so it's best to be prepared.

All of the above is especially true in 2022 - when your chances of losing luggage are higher than ever.

6. Get some food and an empty bottle for the flight

Even if food is served, I like to have some snacks with us. Just in case the boys don't like the food served, or that someone gets hungry in between meals.

Energy bars are a good alternative, as they're small and filling.

You can't carry a full bottle of water through security, so we buy one after passing the check and while waiting at the gate. During the flight, I get up and fill it up to keep hydrated.

7. Get up often during the flight

It's very tempting to just cocoon up during a long flight, avoiding drinking and bathroom visits. That's a huge mistake, especially for adult travelers.

It's very important to stay hydrated and move around to prevent blood clots from forming.

8. Lip balm and hand cream can come in handy

Airplane air is dry, so if you're prone to chapped lips and dry skin, get some with you in advance. Find small travel-size products. Any large tubes (larger than 100CC) will be taken away from you during the security checks.

What Are Some International Airports?

I've been asked for examples of international vs domestic airports. So, let's wrap up with some airport-name-dropping.

Here are some major international airports in the USA.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport

The Detroit Metropolitan Airport, or DTW, is one of the major international airports in the United States. Located in Romulus, Michigan, the DTW covers a massive 4,850 acres, with four runways totaling nearly 11 miles.

It averages over 35 million passengers every year, offering flights to 30 international destinations with 39 of the United States covered, as well. Not only the DTW Michigan’s busiest airport, but it also has one of the largest airline hubs in the country.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, or MSP, serves both the public and military for international flights. The MSP is located in Hennepin County, Minnesota, juxtaposed within 10 miles of both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Covering 2,930 acres, it’s a little over half the size of the DTW, with approximately seven miles of total runway. Averaging nearly 38 million passengers annually, the MSP ranks fairly high in terms of busiest airports.

Las Vegas McCarran International Airport

The Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, or LAS, is another large international airport. Located in Paradise, Nevada, it covers 2,800 acres and has four runways that span over eight miles combined.

With nonstop flights to cities in Europe, Asia, and the United States, it serves almost 50 million passengers every year.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

The fourth busiest airport in the world (aircraft movement) and 15 th busiest in passenger traffic, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, or DFW, is located on the Dallas and Tarrant county line in Texas.

Clocking in at over 17,000 acres, it is the second-largest airport in the United States, so large that it has its own post office, medical emergency, police, and fire rescue. It serves more passengers annually than any other entry listed here – nearly 70 million.

Orlando International Airport

Located just six miles from downtown Orlando, the Orlando International Airport, or MCO, is the busiest airport in Florida. Open for public use, the MCO serves approximately 47 million passengers annually.

It covers over 13,000 acres, making this airport one of the largest in the United States, with four runways totaling nearly 10 miles in length.

What Are Some Domestic Airports?

Here are some popular domestic airports in the USA.

Dallas Love Field

The Dallas Love Field (DAL) airport was once Dallas, Texas’ main airport of use until the massive Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974. Located just six miles from Dallas, it sports roughly three miles of runways while serving approximately 16 million passengers annually.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport

A commercial and military airport, the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (or SAV) is located in Savannah, Georgia. With two runways that total just over three miles, it serves approximately 3 million passengers annually, with that number increasing every year.

The Savannah Air National Guard is located at the airport, serving to transport its personnel, as well.

John Wayne Airport

Serving Orange County, California, as well as the Greater Los Angeles area, the John Wayne Airport (SNA) serves over 10 million passengers every year. Smaller than others listed here, its two runways equal around 1.5 miles in total length.

The SNA is just 14 miles from the Disneyland Resort, while the famous LAX is 35 miles away.

Manchester-Boston Regional Airport

The Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is another public airport located 3 miles from Manchester, New Hampshire. Its two runways total just over three miles in length.

The MHT generally serves around 1.5 million passengers annually and is New England’s fifth-largest airport in terms of passenger volume.

Palm Beach International Airport

The Palm Beach International Airport, or PBI, is located in Palm Beach County, Florida and has three runways that total just over three miles. It serves approximately 6.5 million passengers every year, with limited international flights.

These include seasonal routes to Montreal, and Toronto, Canada, as well as year-round access to the Bahamas.

Final words

Flying can be a fun experience, though the longer it gets, the more tedious it tends to get. Still, you can't do without it if you want to travel abroad. I hope you found this guide helpful. Domestic vs. International Travel: What’s Different?

Are you planning your first trip abroad? As it exciting as it may seem, if you’ve never left the comfort of your home country, you might want to make sure you’re ready for the various hiccups you might run into along the way. 

While traveling internationally can present more challenges than domestic travel, research and careful planning make them easier to conquer. And, there are so many unique experiences to have outside of your own country and culture, those challenges are often worth dealing with. 

Here are some of the biggest differences you should expect to encounter.

7 Big Challenges When Traveling Abroad

Before we get started, it’s important to say that both your personal skillset as well as your destination greatly impact some of these challenges and differences. For example, if you are an American that grew up speaking Spanish at home, a trip to a predominantly Spanish-speaking country will be easier for you than for someone with zero Spanish ability. 

Now, on to the list. 

1. You Need a Passport

It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but if you want to leave your home country and take an international trip or vacation, you are going to need to get a passport if you don’t have one. If you already have one but have never used it, you will want to check that it has at least six month left before it expires. Otherwise, an immigration officer might deny you entry.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time when applying for your passport too. Both  American  and  Canadian  passport processing times can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks. There are some expedited options available for a fee if you find yourself in a hurry, but the safer play is to plan well ahead and give yourself lots of lead time. 

2. Language Barriers

If you have never ventured to a country that primary speaks a different language than you, let me tell you from experience it can be a bit rough at times. Language barriers though come in a spectrum and they aren’t black and white.

For example, you might know a few basic Spanish words that will help you ask about where a bathroom is while visiting a non-touristy area in Costa Rica or you might spend a week in an all-inclusive resort in Bali where all the employees speak English. On the other end of the spectrum you could find yourself asking a Portuguese speaker in a remote area of Brazil for directions or find yourself sitting in a local restaurant in southern Taiwan staring at a Mandarin menu. 

No matter where you end up falling along that spectrum, language barriers can make even the simplest activities, like ordering a cup of coffee, much more difficult. 

3. Culture Shock

For short international and overseas trips, this probably won’t be a big deal. Culture shock usually doesn’t show its most viscous side until you’ve been away from home for at least several weeks or longer. That doesn’t mean you won’t experience a bit of it though. 

Like language barriers, culture shock exists on a spectrum too. While traveling you may suddenly feel uncomfortable with how close people are standing  next to you in a line, which might be the normal distance in their culture but might make you feel unsafe. Or, you might end up not being able to stomach the local cuisine and find yourself longing for a comfort meal from home. 

The worst part of culture shock is that it can sneak up on you from out of nowhere. If it does, just remind yourself one of the reasons you decided to visit a different country was to experience new things. 

4. Transportation Options

One of the biggest mistakes many novice international travelers make is to skip researching the current transportation situation at their destination or destinations of choice. Getting from airport to airport is only a small part of all the traveling you’ll most likely be doing. 

Getting a feel for how you will be getting from place to place before you get your boots on the ground will save you a lot of time and many headaches. A couple questions you need to research are – 

• Is there a public transportation infrastructure and if so is it easy to understand?
• If there is public transportation, is it safe and reliable?
• Will you have to rent a car and if so, what are the driving laws and regulations?
• Are there ride sharing services like Uber, Lyft, and Grab?

Planning on how you are going to get around once you arrive is key to an enjoyable experience overall.  

5. Mobile Phone Plans

You will never understand the true value of having access to the whole of the Internet on demand as much as when you are struggling to find an address in a foreign country. Your smartphone is an amazing travel tool. Unfortunately, it’s not going to do you much good without a functioning and affordable data plan. 

Getting a data plan in a foreign country used to be a challenge, but it’s getting easier and easier these days. You might be able to have your current provider activate an international data plan for a not-too-expensive surcharge before starting your travels. Some countries have prepaid data merchants selling temporary SIM cards right in the arrival halls of their airports. 

And, if you are a  Google Fi  user, you should already be good to go without any additional homework as the service will work in a ton of different countries. 

6. Currency and Exchange Rates

When you take a trip within your own country, you don’t have to worry too much about access to cash. Your debit card should work in almost any ATM and you always have credit cards as a backup. But, dealing with a different country’s financial system can be a major headache. 

If you are from Los Angeles and take a trip to New York City, you are using greenbacks, so you don’t need to make any kind of currency conversion. However, say you run out of pocket money and need to use an ATM. Your bank freezes the transaction due to you being out of your normal network. If you make an effort to make withdraws during business hours, you can always call the bank and get it sorted out quickly. 

Now, let’s say you are from Los Angeles and you take a trip to Hong Kong. Trying to contact your bank requires either staying up very late or waking up very early due to the time difference. You’re much more likely to have an ATM or credit card security problem when traveling overseas as well, even if you call the financial institutions and alert them of your travel plans. 

Aside from all the potential technical issues, you also need to take exchange rates into consideration every time you buy something.  

Piggybacking on the idea of time zones and time differences from the problem above about getting in touch with your bank, jet lag is another potential issue when you go on an international trip. It’s not going to be for every trip of course, like if you live in Texas and are taking a trip just over the border. But, if you’re flying from NYC to London or from Houston to Singapore you re going to experience the joys of jet lag. 

For first timers, it’s going to most likely hit you like a freight train. You will feel fine and then out of nowhere you’ll run out of energy. You will feel like the health bar of a character in a video games looks when it goes from 100 to 0. 

You can try to mitigate jet lag with some careful pre-flight planning, but it’s almost impossible to completely negate. 

Should I Even Bother Going to a Different Country?

While all of that might seem like too much to take on, in most cases the hurdles are worth the payoff. Additionally, the good news is that once your work your way through some of the challenges, like getting your passport for example, you don’t have to revisit them for years. And, many of the others get easier to manage the more experience you get with traveling internationally. 

The benefits of visiting different countries and cultures generally far outweigh the drawbacks like jet lag and culture shock. Furthermore, a little bit of planning goes a long way, and the whole process gets easier with experience.

What is domestic tourism and why is it so important?

Domestic tourism is BIG business in some countries, bringing in a significant revenue for the economy of the local area and nationwide. But what is domestic tourism?

In this article I will explain what domestic tourism is and why it is important. I will also give some examples of some of the biggest domestic tourism destinations worldwide.

What is domestic tourism?

Domestic tourism definitions, why is domestic tourism important, domestic tourism in the united kingdom, domestic tourism in the united states of america, domestic tourism in india, domestic tourism in south africa, domestic tourism in china, domestic tourism: conclusion, further reading.

As I described in my tourism glossary , domestic tourism is the act of travelling for business or leisure within one’s home country. According to the UNWTO , a person must be away from their usual place of residence (but still in their home country) for at least one night to qualify as a domestic tourist.

Popular destinations for domestic tourism include the USA, India and China . This is because they are big countries with a variety of tourist experiences to offer.

Ever seen the film ‘ Into the Wild? ‘ This is a great example of domestic tourism! It’s a story of a young guy who sold all of his belongings and hitch hiked through America to Alaska . Here is the trailer-

Travelling a few miles away from your home, you don’t expect to be classed as a ‘tourist’ right? But in fact, you often will be classed as a tourist- a domestic tourist!

In general, domestic tourists are anyone who undertakes travel activities in their own country of residence, i.e. living in London and travelling to Glasgow for the day or for an overnight stay.

Unlike other definitions in the tourism ‘vocabulary’, the term ‘domestic tourism’ has not changed in its years. In 2005, Gillian Gale, in her text book designed for BTEC National Travel and Tourism students , defined domestic tourists as;

“People who are travelling in their own country for tourism purposes”

Further to this, Arjun Kumar Bhatia, in his text on International Tourism Management states that;

“In domestic tourism, people travel outside their normal domicile to certain other areas within the country as contrasted with travelling outside the boundaries of the country as in international tourism .”

According to a recent report published by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), domestic tourism accounts for 73% of total Travel and Tourism spending globally in 2018; thus it is a key driver of the tourism sector.

Countries rely on domestic tourism as a tool to reduce poverty, improve infrastructure, generate employment and most importantly to drive economic growth.

The activities of domestic tourists create economic importance as the money spent on domestic tourism feeds back into that particular country’s economy; providing itself with a more viable and prosperous economy.

Popular domestic tourism destinations

According to the WTTC report published in 2018, there has been a slight shift in the countries’ positions in domestic visitor spending between 2008 and 2017.

Below I have listed a few examples of domestic tourism.

According to Visit Britain and its annual review, in 2017/2018, 100.6 million domestic overnight trips were taken and 1.5 billion domestic day visits were taken in England in 2017.

The UK’s domestic overnight trips reached £19 billion, whilst the 1.5 billion domestic day visits reached £50.1 billion. All of which feeds back into the UK economy.

The most popular travel attractions for domestic tourism in the UK are:

• The Tower of London
• Westminster Abbey
• Kew Gardens
• St Paul’s Cathedral
• Chester Zoo
• Windermere Boat Cruises, Bowness
• Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo, Yorkshire
• Drayton Manor Theme Park

As you can see from the list above, the majority of the locations are based in London, the Capital city of the UK. Most domestic tourism activities in the UK are either centred around the conservation of either natural or heritage sights or theme parks.

Despite living on the outskirts of London for most of my life, I am ashamed to say that I have only actually ever visited a few of these attractions! I guess I will add these to my bucket list and take the kids on a day trip soon…

In 2018, domestic tourists spent $933 billion dollars in the United States of America – representing 86% of total tourism expenditures. In 2018, domestic tourism supported 7.7 million jobs.

To me, it is no surprise that the domestic tourism industry in the USA is worth so much. Not only is it a HUGE country with an incredible range of diversity in tourism areas, from the snows of Alaska to the heat of Miami, but it is also true that most Americans do not have a passport !

According to the World Atlas , the most popular destinations for domestic tourism in the United States are;

• Alaskan Cruise, Alaska
• Orlando, Florida
• Las Vegas , Nevada
• Maui, Hawaii
• New York City, New York
• Honolulu, Hawaii
• Hawaiian Cruise, Hawaii
• Miami Beach, Florida
• Washington, DC
• Los Angeles, California

The table below shows you the percentage of domestic tourism which took place in each of these locations in 2018.

India is home to some of the most beautiful natural and cultural heritage sites in the world, not only making it a popular destination for international tourists, but also for domestic tourists.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, domestic spending in India is at 87.2%, compared to foreign spending at 12.8%. Therefore, domestic tourism in India contributes to 9.4% of its overall GDP.

India is a beautiful country, with so much to offer! It has certainly been one of my favourite countries to travel and I hope to return with my children someday soon. It is no surprise to see that the domestic tourism industry in India is so significant, given the diversity of attractions and the sheer size of the country, not to mention that many people living in India cannot afford to travel internationally.

One of our recent travel destinations is South Africa , which is a growing destination for domestic tourism. The Minister of SA has fostered The National Tourism Sector Strategy (NTSS), which is a strategy that focuses on domestic tourism and its contribution to a sustainable tourism economy.

According to a report by Statistics South Africa , the number of day trips increased from 39.4 million in 2016 to 48.0 million in 2017. Overnight trips also increased to 44.4 million in 2017.

Unlike the other destinations listed above, South Africa is home to abundant wildlife and nature reserves sites that attracts domestic tourism. According to the South African Tourism Board, the top destinations in South Africa are;

According to the Chinese Ministry at a press conference, domestic tourism generated 5.13 trillion yuan ($764 billion U.S dollars) in revenue last year and this figure was climbing steeply each year prior to the pandemic, in fact the Chinese market (both domestically and internationally has been the fastest growing tourism industry in the world in recent years!). In comparison, Chinese tourists spent a total of $115.29 (U.S dollars) on outbound tourism .

According to research by the WTTC , China has been extremely successful in fostering domestic tourism, and is now one of the leading domestic tourism markets in the world.

There is a lot of hidden cultural heritage in China that is often overlooked or ignored with its commercialised industry and giant sky scrapers. Here is a video demonstrating some of China’s most popular tourist attractions.

There often seems to be confusion over whether a flight is still considered a domestic flight if it flies over an ocean or if, in flying between two airports in the same country, the flight overflies another country.

In some situations, a flight would still be considered domestic if its route means that from its departure to its destination airport, both situated within the same nation, it overflies another country.

An example of this would be a flight from somewhere in the lower 48 States to Alaska , which would probably fly over Canada to get there but still be classed as a domestic flight.

What is the difference between domestic and international flights?

The main differences between domestic and international flights are:

In some other countries, there are fast rail links that route from city center to center, which can often be quicker than flying (largely because it eliminates the need to travel from a city center to an airport outside the city to catch a flight and then the same journey into the city center at the other end.

Domestic tourism soars in China but foreigners stay away

W ith the Chinese economy facing massive challenges, there have been concerns over its growth potential, at least in the immediate future.

Yet a key exception is emerging in the form of domestic tourism.

Last week's five-day public holiday to mark labour day saw 295 million trips made within China, according to figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. This was 28% higher than pre-pandemic figures recorded in 2019.

The Transport Ministry's figures are also staggering: 92 million rail trips; almost 10 million air trips and 1.25 billion highway journeys.

However, this comes as international arrivals continue to lag, with foreigners currently entering China at barely 30% of 2019 levels. Why the disparity?

The beautiful historical river town of Wuzhen, a short drive from Shanghai, is considered one of China's top visitor sites for travellers of all types.

When we arrive the little pathways and old bridges which cross narrow waterways are filled with visitors.

A popular thing to do in Wuzhen is to pose for photos dressed in traditional hanfu clothing - as if you have really been transported back hundreds of years.

Two women in their 20s, friends since high school, are visiting from Jilin Province in the north east.

After arriving, they spend an hour getting their hair done in an elaborate imperial-era style - and they are full of praise for Wuzhen's classical beauty.

We ask if, following the post-Covid opening up, many of their family and other friends have been travelling much?

"Of course, after the pandemic, we're all visiting other places."

Nearby a local man who is selling ice-creams also says tourist numbers are "not that bad lately".

As good as before Covid?

"Almost the same," he replies.

Shopkeeper Wang Ying, who sells traditional snacks, echoes this sentiment with a big smile on her face.

"Business is going well, and it'll only get better."

• What China's economic problems mean for the world

All this will be seen as good news for the Chinese government. It's been saying that a push on domestic consumption can counter the significant faltering portions of the economy.

Major players in the once-mighty property sector are struggling to stay afloat, local government debt continues to rise, and persistent youth unemployment has left highly qualified university graduates uncertain of their future.

Amid all these challenges, the Communist Party has set a target of "around 5%" GDP growth for this year. Apart from the fact that analysts have long questioned the veracity of the country's official growth figures, economists are also asking how such a target can be reached, in any genuine sense, in 2024 without significant extra stimulus.

One lifeline could be a more buoyant travel scene which could bring broader business opportunities and greater service industry employment.

Schubert Lou, chief operating officer at travel agency Trip.com, told the BBC: "We've seen very strong domestic travel demand with search volumes in hotels up 67% compared to last year, and flight volumes up 80%."

Tourism industry consultant Peng Han from Travel Daily is following the investment trail to see how the business community really views the possibilities in the sector.

"With famous international hotel brands - like Intercontinental, Marriott and Hilton - you just have to look at their growth in China in 2023," he says. "Then check the performance goals for these large hotel groups in 2024 which have also been set relatively high. This shows that they are very optimistic about the growth potential of the Chinese market."

But, while the volume of local travellers might be up, Mr Peng does point to the problem of per capita consumption which remains persistently low.

He says general uncertainty about the Chinese economy is putting more emphasis on saving, so people are looking for good value options. They are going on holidays and paying for things but doing so much more frugally.

This is where an increase in big-spending foreigners could help.

But they are simply not travelling to China in the numbers they used to. In 2019, nearly 98 million international visitors came to the country. Last year it was only 35 million - including business trips, students and the like.

Mr Lou describes the domestic versus international market as "uneven".

For many in the tourism industry here specialising in services for foreign travellers, "uneven" would be an understatement.

Three years of harsh Covid prevention measures drove down arrivals from other countries, but that alone can't account for the current situation.

Huang Songshan, the head of the Centre for Tourism Research in the School of Business and Law at Australia's Edith Cowan University, blames this weakness in part to "the shifting geopolitical landscape globally".

In the peer-reviewed East Asia Forum, he pointed to a 2023 survey carried out by the Pew Research Centre, writing that, "Most individuals in Western nations hold unfavourable views towards China. The Chinese government's tightening grip on societal regulations could potentially cause discomfort for foreign travellers in China."

Official travel advice from some governments echo this sentiment, at times quite harshly.

Washington warns potential travellers to "reconsider travel to Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including in relation to exit bans, and the risk of wrongful detentions".

Australia advises "a high degree of caution" warning that "Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws".

The political environment has also taken a toll on flight availability and price.

This is especially the case with connections to and from North America. Last month's 332 scheduled round trips between China and the US contrasts with 1,506 in April 2019.

As a result, finding a seat on a direct flight can be extremely difficult and those that are available are very expensive.

President Xi Jinping made a speech at a dinner on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco last November addressing this point.

"Today, President Biden and I reached important consensus," he told the crowd.

"Our two countries will roll out more measures to facilitate travels and promote people-to-people exchanges, including increasing direct passenger flights, holding a high-level dialogue on tourism, and streamlining visa application procedures. We hope that our two peoples will make more visits, contacts and exchanges and write new stories of friendship in the new era."

Washington has since increased the number of Chinese airline flights permitted to land - but only from 35 per week to 50. It is still well short of the 150 weekly trips pre-Covid.

The Biden administration is coming under pressure from unions and US airlines to not increase this any further because, they argue, Chinese airlines have an unfair advantage over them as they have state support; don't face the same onerous Chinese regulations; and, crucially, can fly over Russian airspace, making trips shorter and cheaper.

A letter to the US government from the Chair of the House Committee on China, Mike Gallagher, and the committee's top Democrat representative, Raja Krishnamoorthi, reads: "Should the US-China passenger carrier market expand without the US government addressing these significant issues, US aviation workers, travellers and airlines will pay a hefty price tag."

Mr Lou says the frequency of international flight connections is definitely having an impact.

"What we are seeing right now, based on civil aviation data, is that inbound flight capacity won't get back to even 80% of 2019 [levels] by the end of 2024."

Then there are other potential turnoffs for those considering travelling in China, like the country's state-of-the-art phone app payment and booking systems which work very smoothly for Chinese citizens and residents, but which can be an enormous headache if you have just arrived.

There are certain sites, transport options, and purchases which can only be accessed via Chinese electronic apps which are, at times, only available in Chinese.

Professor Chen Yong at Switzerland's EHL Hospitality Business School is an authority on the economics of tourism in China. He thinks that hurdles relating to payment and booking apps can pose a real problem.

"Technologies such as social network websites, online maps, payment apps, among others, which foreigners have long been accustomed to using, are either unavailable or inaccessible when they travel to China," he says.

"On the other hand, there are Chinese alternatives to these technologies that remain inaccessible to foreigners due to language barriers and differences in user habits. We need to bridge this divide because it affects the tourist industry badly."

Back in Wuzhen, the presence of international travellers is much smaller than in years gone by, but there are still a few foreign faces in the crowd.

An Italian couple says the process of linking up to and using China's payment apps was a challenge but that it was not insurmountable, though they add, with a laugh, that it is "much, much, much easier" if you have a Chinese friend to help you.

Eliseo, from California, says he has had problems making payments to small vendors who don't accept credit cards and really no longer deal with cash. Another hurdle for him has been his bank at home which has blocked some payments, flagging them as potentially fraudulent coming from China.

Chinese officials have acknowledged that the foreign traveller numbers have been low but they are now trying to turn this around.

One way they're attempting to attract more foreign visitors is by increasing the number of countries whose citizens don't need a visa to enter.

Trip.com says this resulted in an almost immediate increase in passenger arrivals from Southeast Asia.

In 23 Chinese cities, transit passengers from more than 50 countries are also able to stay for a few days visa free if they have an onward ticket.

In Shanghai, hotels above a three-star level have been told that they should prepare to deal with international credit cards and an initial batch of 50 taxis have also started accepting them.

However, Professor Chen says "it would be too optimistic to envision a long-term growth in China's inbound tourism".

"The key is to establish a culture that puts service providers in the shoes of foreign tourists. They should imagine themselves being a foreigner who can't speak or read Chinese and who doesn't have a Chinese mobile number, payments apps and so on."

He says that the culture around this can't be changed overnight.

Yet, in places like Wuzhen - where the local travellers have already returned - the tourism companies are hoping that incredible sites like theirs will eventually be too much for foreigners to resist as well.
