  • Travel Fox Trainers

Cast your mind back to a day when kids used to be active and could be seen running down the street rather than dragging their heels. It was the 80s, a time when kids loved their trainers! Even those trendsters on The Clothes Show declared 1987 to be: "The year of the training shoe".

OK, so maybe not everyone's trainers were actually used for sports purposes, but at least most of them looked like they could be - they were now bigger and better than the 70s trend for Adidas Sambas and, remember this was before the Spice Girl wedge trainer got unleashed on teenage girls. The 80s was a hive of new shoe brands, getting more and more expensive with every new launch, may I add.

One of the pricier trainers was the Travel Fox, selling for more than £100 a pair, which in those days was practically laughable. Produced by an Italian manufacturer, they were spotted by Ashley Schapiro and imported to the States in the mid 80s with Hongson International, a New York City based company. The brand become eponymous with risque advertising campaigns, but it all went wrong in 1987, when they ran a 'sex sells' style ad during what was the AIDs era.

The Travel Fox brand was closely followed by the Reebok Pump at around £175 a pair - first worn by pop pundit Jonathan Kind don't cha know? There was also 80s competition from Nike Jordans. But Travel Fox remained a firm favourite for its soft nappa leather construction, hangtags and basketball-boot styling, and later with suede.

They were favourites of Tony Wilson who wore them (badly) with his collection of Armani suits, along with clubbers / ravers / anyone who could afford them. Jazzy B and Soul II Soul wore them in the 90s until the brand became seen as uncool and the brand spent the next few years trying to remarket Travel Fox trainers to keep up with the new wave of what was deemed 'casualetic' leisurewear. In 1992, they were pitched as upmarket hiking boots, and there were also attempts to up the performance levels for serious athletic footwear status. In 2007, the chain JJB Sports bought the Travel Fox label and the rest, we can safely say, is history.

In Moscow, Tolerance Of Protests

By Bill Keller, Special To the New York Times

  • June 8, 1988

In Moscow, Tolerance Of Protests

In a move both Soviet officials and dissidents describe as a significant step toward greater freedom of political expression, the Moscow authorities have quietly adopted a more tolerant attitude toward unauthorized public demonstrations.

No new policy has been publicly announced and a strict anti-demonstration ordinance approved last year remains on the books, but Moscow police officials confirm that they are now under orders not to interfere with street demonstrations as long as they are orderly.

''It is our responsibility to make sure it does not interfere with the order of the city, not to have an uncontrollable situation,'' Pyotr S. Bogdanov, the Moscow police chief, said in a recent interview. ''But in general, if somebody says he wants to demonstrate for clean air, or if they want to demonstrate to leave for another country, that's their right. We won't interfere.''

''If before we used one set of measures, now we are using more democratic methods with respect to the public expression of views,'' he said. ''It is no longer our policy to detain these people.'' Defense in the Press

The Soviet press, which has traditionally condemned independent protests as unpatriotic performances for the benefit of Western journalists, has begun to defend them in some cases as a valid means of political expression.

The new approach has been evident in the past few weeks as policemen watched but did not interrupt a variety of public demonstrations in central Moscow, including two mass marches by environmentalists, a vigil by the Russian nationalist group Pamyat (Memory) honoring a czarist general, demonstrations by Jews refused permission to emigrate, and weekly gatherings of Armenians disturbed by the official handling of an ethnic dispute in two southern republics.

On Sunday police stopped traffic as scores of protesters from a self-proclaimed opposition political party marched through the center of the city demanding the release of political prisoners from Soviet labor camps. It was the group's second such protest in five days; less than a month ago several group members were arrested when they tried to meet in a Moscow suburb.

''At first we thought it was a show for the summit,'' said Yuri Mityunov, an organizer of the Sunday protest. ''But the summit is over and the police still leave us alone. Now we hope it is a small step toward democracy in our country.''

The new approach appears to apply primarily to Moscow. Recent demonstrations in Leningrad and other cities have been broken up by the police.

''In Moscow, it seems the situation is becoming more free,'' said Aleksandr Podrabinek, editor of Ekspress Khronika, a weekly bulletin of dissident activities around the country. ''But so far it seems to be limited to Moscow. We are hopeful, but it is too early to predict.''

While Mikhail S. Gorbachev's policy of glasnost has opened the way for wider expression of dissent in the press and the formation of independent political groups, the Soviet authorities have seemed unable to form a clear policy on unauthorized public protests. A Hands-Off Policy

In the past year or two, demonstrators have never been sure if they would be left alone, dispersed, arrested or beaten. On several occasions the police stood by as plainclothesmen brutally disrupted gatherings of Jewish dissidents.

Last August, after demonstrations by Russian nationalists, Crimean Tatars and Jewish dissidents, the Moscow City Council adopted an ordinance closing most of the favorite gathering places and banning any public assembly unless the organizers obtained a city permit. Those who applied for permission to demonstrate were almost invariably turned down.

Lev P. Belyansky, a spokesman for the Moscow police, said today that the ordinance ''exists mainly on paper.'' He said that the police now usually warn demonstrators that a permit is required, but that the policy is not to interfere unless a protest is snarling traffic or inciting people to violence.

On Monday, he said, police watched patiently while a small group of Russian nationalists demonstrated in honor of Aleksei A. Brusilov, a czarist general who later served the Bolsheviks. Only when the demonstrators demanded that the police remove their caps in the general's honor did the police move in to disperse the gathering peacefully, Mr. Belyansky said.

A prominent lawyer, Nina Y. Belyayeva of the State Institute of Government and Law, told an Izvestia interviewer in May that the Moscow ban and similar ordinances in Leningrad, Riga, Novosibirsk and several other cities violated the Constitution. The Constitution, which promises freedom of speech and assembly, is generally considered to have little meaning.

''Widescale, massive, genuinely self-initiated and organized demonstrations are one of the most important democratic forms of people's power,'' the lawyer declared.

The Soviet press has recently publicized proposals for creation of a legal speakers' corner, like the one at Hyde Park in London. Mr. Belyansky said the police favor this idea.

Last month the governing Central Committee of the Communist Party, in its platform for a national party conference to begin June 27, called for new laws to protect political rights including ''freedom of speech, conscience, assembly, meetings street processions and demonstrations.'' Muscovites Oppose Protest

A New York Times/CBS News Poll of 939 Muscovites last month found that a majority believed street demonstrations are ''not acceptable in our country,'' while 35 percent favored the right to demonstrate.

Mr. Bogdanov, the Moscow police chief, said police have sometimes encountered puzzled reactions from passers-by when they look on without disrupting demonstrations.

''People ask us, ''Why don't you do something?'' he said. ''It''s a new thing for us. We're just staring to understand it's a necessary thing that goes along with perestroika.''

Mr. Podrabinek said that in the last few weeks demonstrations in Leningrad, Vladimir, Riga, and Tbilisi had ended with participants being detained.

At the same time, citizens in several cities have staged public protests over the selection to the national Communist Party conference, and those meetings have been permitted.

''It seems that a lot depends on where you live,'' Mr. Podrabinek said.

Don’t Call It A Comeback: DeFY. New York Talks Past, Present and Future With Travel Fox

If you aren’t familiar with Travel Fox then grab a seat. Established in 1985 in the Marche region of Monte San Guesto Italy, Travel Fox would go on to carve out their own lane in the highly competitive world of footwear during the 80’s and through the mid 90’s. The company was known for shoes that featured high quality materials such as Italian Napa leather, solid comfort and silhouette’s that stood out among the feet of youth in cities around the world.

unnamed

They were expensive, finely crafted and of course sported as a status symbol. Like most brands, marketing also played a key role in the success of Travel fox. Their racy advertising during a much more conservative time period stood out among other footwear brands but was immediately banned because of the suggestive nature of the images. In their prime, the company boasted 80 million dollars in sales annually but would eventually fizzle out among legal issues. Fast forward to 2016 and Travel Fox is back in the American market for the first time in nearly 2 decades. DeFY. New York recently caught up with Shawn McIntyre of Vissinternational to talk about the past, present and of course the future of Travel Fox.

Hi Shawn, I appreciate you sitting down with DeFY. New York.

DeFY: Lets go back to the beginning. Where did the name Travel Fox come from?

unnamed

Shawn: The name Travel Fox originated as a combination between Taiwanese manufacturers Hongson international and and their designer counterparts in Monte San Guesto Italy : Travel representing leisure, comfort , soft . Fox:sexy, smart, style.

DeFY: Who were the original owners? Are they involved today?

unnamed-7

Shawn: The Owners /manufactures were and still are Taiwanese manufacturing giant Hongson International who incorporated the fine art of Italian design and craftsmanship to produce casual footwear (the art of casualism) that has been a fashion forward icon from its inception. I

DeFY: Lets talk marketing. Travel fox had what a lot of people considered as very racy ads that were supposedly banned. Where did the company advertise?

Shawn: TravelFox advertised in Playboy magazine, Rolling Stone and GQ magazine and even Time Square. There were also some commercials.

unnamed-12

The marketing was viewed as so ahead of its time that it won the highest awards in marketing (Clio awards) but was immediately banned because of the suggestive nature of the images. It sparked controversy in an era that was highly conservative in comparison to today .

DeFY: At one point TravelFox was doing an average of 80 Million dollars in sales annually but would eventually go out of business. What happened?

unnamed-5

Shawn: That’s correct, TravelFox was doing average of 80million annually in the US market way ahead of any of the bigger brands today with their head office situated in the Rockefeller tower. The brand eventually became embroiled in a huge legal battle with another major brand over a logo infringement involving one of the labels carried at that time by Hongson International .To this effect TravelFox’s retraction from the market was eminent .Under Hongson TravelFox would rest dormant for the next 18 years, their manufacturing relegated to 50 brand name stores in Taiwan while continuing to acquire other major labels to become a manufacturing/owner powerhouse in Asia .

DeFY: Ok, so lets talk the return. Over the past several years I can’t tell you how many people have reached out to me personally about where they can purchase Travel Fox footwear and or what happened to the company. What can old and new fans alike expect moving forward?

unnamed-1

Shawn: In 2015 with Vissinternational as the official North American distributors we celebrate and reintroduce to the market the TravelFox 30th anniversary line .

unnamed-8

We’ve been prepping the market since 2014 with availability in selected sneaker stores in New York ,Miami, Africa and the Caribbean in which we introduced a clean version of our flagship model 900 classic series.

unnamed-6

DeFY: Where can fans of the company go to purchase Travel Fox sneakers and or follow all things  Travel

Shawn: We intend to engage the market with high energy cross promotion events and marketing campaigns in a lifestyle setting with top celebs and athletes across all genres , while creating a strong social media presence across all platforms .

Reviving classic Russian cuisine

Oct 19 2018.

travel fox shoes 1988

Roads & Kingdoms talks to Russian chef Vladimir Mukhin of Moscow’s super-restaurant, White Rabbit.

Still in his mid-30’s, Vladimir Mukhin is already one of Russia’s best known chefs and the leading culinary light of the White Rabbit Group, which has 16 restaurants around the country. The most well-known of these, Moscow’s  White Rabbit , was named one of the 50 best restaurants in the world last year. Roads & Kingdoms’ Nathan Thornburgh talked to Mukhin in Moscow about being a fifth-generation chef, reviving classic Russian cuisine, and finding good product in the age of embargoes.

Nathan Thornburgh: Tell me about White Rabbit, what is the food? What are you trying to accomplish there?

Vladimir Mukhin: The White Rabbit is a big restaurant. We’re trying to revive Russian cuisine. I’m a fifth-generation chef, so I’m passionate about the food we create. During the Soviet Union period, we killed Russian food. Classic Russian recipes became too simplified. For example, usually you drink tea, but if you want to be, just to be creative, want to make the tea with milk, you can’t. It would be like stealing milk from the government. People went to jail.

When I was growing up, I remember my grandfather coming to the kitchen and crying because he couldn’t experiment with his food.

Thornburgh: Wow. I remember this famous photo session with Che Guevara which came up with some of his best pictures, maybe two incredible iconic portraits came from an entire roll of film, and the photographer went to him and showed him this roll of film and Che said, What the hell are you doing? You wasted all of these images. You took 30 pictures to get one? That’s the government’s film. It’s a similar mentality.   So you’re telling the story of a kind of cuisine that was lost on the Soviet history and now you’re playing with this idea of finding it again. What does your process look like? Do you get as many grandmothers as you can round up and just kind of shake recipes out of them? How were you doing this?

Mukhin: I just try to work with as many local farmers and producers as I can, so we can use as many Russian ingredients as we can.

Thornburgh: So this is a close relationship.

Mukhin: Yes. I traveled throughout Russia—not just the big cities, but also the villages to talk with older people.

Thornburgh: You know I think people don’t understand the vastness of Russia, and how big it’s collection of cultures and languages and cuisines is. What parts of the country influences your food?

Mukhin: I’m inspired by the whole country. It’s a big territory, and sometimes it feels like it’s too big. I try and use different techniques and ingredients from all over the country, which I think makes my menus distinct.

We have an a la carte menu with about 50 dishes of classical Russian food. Everything looks modern because I’m a young chef. But if you close your eyes and try these dishes, you’ll taste 100% classic Russian flavors.

I want to highlight all aspects of Russian cuisine. Before the Olympic Games in Sochi, we opened a restaurant there, not just to make money, but to expose people visiting for the Olympics to Russian food. That’s why we opened The Red Fox restaurant. It’s all about Russian ingredients.

Thornburgh: Sochi, at least when I’ve been there, is like a Miami Beach. It’s like a place to get pizza and sushi, and go to the nightclubs.

Mukhin: You been?

Thornburgh: Yeah.

Mukhin: It’s crazy.

Thornburgh: It’s a little crazy, but it’s interesting to bring in Red Fox and sort of say okay, because people are coming out, let’s bring Russia to Sochi.

Mukhin: It was incredible. We had thousands of visitors at the restaurant.

Thornburgh: So you really looked internally for inspiration. Did working outside of Russia motivate you to focus on Russian cuisine?

Mukhin: Yes. I spent time working in Avignon, France. I worked with Christian Etienne, and he would make a special Russian meal once a year.  It was crazy.

travel fox shoes 1988

Thornburgh: How was the food?

Mukhin: It was shit. I told him that I would cook real Russian food for him, and I did. I cooked borscht, blinis, and other classics. He liked it and said that once a year we should use my recipes, but with his influence. I agreed, and we went on to make amazing food. Eventually, I wanted to come back to my motherland. So I left and I started working on making White Rabbit a reality.

Thornburgh: When people go to White Rabbit, what are they going to find?

Mukhin: Someone once told me that there is a new Russian cuisine and an old Russian cuisine. I think Russian cuisine is going through an evolution. So I hope people will come and see evolution at White Rabbit.

Thornburgh: Great. Always good to end on an invite. Thank you.

Mukhin: Thank you so much.
