We recommend you pay a bit extra and travel with one of the better bus companies that are generally a) safer with better quality drivers and more security and b) more comfortable. Our favourite buses to travel to Puno with are:

Cruz del Sur

cruz del sur

Turismo Mer

How to get to Puno by bus with Turismo Mer

Both of these companies also offer a day long bus route from Cusco to and from Puno where you stop off and visit some of the scenic sights along the way including La Raya, the highest point on the journey at 4335 metres, the Wiracocha temple at Raqchi and the town of Pukara famous for their ceramic bulls.

Approximate fare prices:

Cusco to/from Puno from US$17.

Day long tourist bus Cusco to/from Puno from US$45.

Arequipa to/from Puno from US$20.

If you’re feeling adventurous you can opt to hire a car and drive the seven hours from Cusco to Puno or the 5 hours from Arequipa to Puno. The drive from Lima takes about 22 hours and unless you have a) buckets of time and b) want to brave the winding roads and ravines of the Andes we don’t recommend.

It’s also probably worth mentioning that driving standards are much lower in Peru than in The U.S or Europe so be prepared to see some crazy overtaking on bends, speeding etc.! Book car hire in Peru here.

Ways to Get from Cusco to Lake Titicaca

🛵 Okay, let’s get into the details of the different ways to get from Cusco to Puno.

Everybody has different priorities when it comes to transportation and traveling around a country. My top priorities are to get somewhere safely, swiftly, and for a good price. Double bonus if it’s scenic.

The transportation through this South American country is sometimes long, but it is well connected throughout the country. It’s entirely possible to explore the entire country via tourist transport and/or public transportation.

Cusco to Puno by Air

The quickest way to get from Cusco to Puno is by flying. The closest airport to Puno is the Inca Manco Cápac airport in the city of Juliaca.  Juliaca to Puno is about an hour drive.

There are direct flights to Juliaca from both Lima and Cusco. I traveled to Puno at the end of May 2022 and at the time, Jualiaca airport was closed for a few weeks.

Jualiaca has since been open but I met a couple who found out last minute that the airport was closed so just be aware that communication was lacking in this department.

A Cusco to Puno flight takes roughly 55 minutes and cost between 100-130 USD. Sky Airlines and LATAM Airlines are two carriers that fly from Cusco to Puno. Luggage will cost extra.

✈️ Travel Tip:   If you are flying into Puno check with your hotel as most can book you a shuttle for around 20 soles.

The train coming into Aguas Calientes, Peru

Cusco to Puno by Train

The most luxurious and most expensive way to travel from Cusco to Puno is on the Belmond Andean Explorer . If you love to travel in style then you’ll love the Cusco to Puno luxury train.

This exclusive train ride travels through gorgeous landscapes including rivers and beautiful mountain peaks. This is South America’s first luxury sleeper service and no detail is spared.

The entire journey lasts 10-11 hours where you can enjoy the views from the observation car, sip a pisco sour from the bar car or enjoy a gourmet meal from the dining car.

This mode of transportation is for the train buffs as the scenery is similar to the bus as the rails run parallel to the road. If you’re really feeling fancy, you can book a 2 night journey and end in the white city of Arequipa. Trains depart every Tuesday from Cusco to Puno by train.

Things to do in Puno Peru

Cusco to Puno by Bus

The cheapest way to get from Cusco to Puno is on the bus. There are dozens of tourist bus companies to choose from, some better than others.

The terminal terrestre is the main bus station in Puno that the long-distance buses arrive at. Buses leave from Cusco every hour from 4am to 10pm on a regular basis from the main terminal terrestre but there are multiple bus terminals in Cusco so check your bus ticket carefully.

Transzela Cusco to Puno Bus

We took the Cusco to Puno bus option when we were deciding how to get to Puno from Cusco. We had sleeper seats on Transzela and it only cost 40 soles per person.

We vlogged our experience on the Transzela Cusco to Puno bus. You can check it out our Cusco to Puno on a bus travel vlog here.

The most enjoyable way to get to Puno from Cusco is on the Inka Express. The Inka Express offers luxury buses with panoramic windows and include lunch, oxygen and an English speaking tour guide. This trip takes about 8 hours.

Cruz del Sur Cusco to Lake Titicaca Bus

Cruz del Sur is another bus ride option. This is one of the biggest and safest bus companies in Peru that has luxurious sleeper seats. You are able to book tickets in advance online which is convenient.

This also makes ticket prices a bit more expensive so if you are traveling on a budget , your best bet is to book one in person at the station.

Peru Hop Bus

Peru Hop is another bus company to take to get to Puno from Cusco. If you have ample time to explore Peru, the benefits of booking with Peru Hop is get one of their hop on hop off long passes.

This allows you to be in your own schedule and explore a lot of hidden gems that Peru has to offer. I took a Peru Hop bus from Lima to Cusco stopping in Huacachina and Nazca along the way.

If I would have stopped in Arequipa and Puno before arriving in Cusco, I could confidently recommend this Peru bus company.

Unfortunately, I was on a time schedule to get to Cusco as I was  trekking Salkantay without a guide, tent or reservations and had to be in Machu Picchu on the specific date of our entry ticket.

Therefore, my Peru Hop experience ended up being an unexpected 28 hour bus ride that I never want to repeat…ever again.

Cusco to Puno by Car

The most convenient way to get from Cusco to Puno is by private car. If budget is not an issue you can hire a private car to get to Puno. It will cost anywhere from $200 and up.

Additional information to help choose what bus company to take:.

  • Some bus companies, such as the hop on hop off companies, do pick you up from wherever you’re staying, which is a much more secure and safer service rather than having to take local taxis. Going with public bus companies you will always have to travel to the terminal meaning there is the need to find out where the terminal is and organising transport to on the day of travel.
  • This varies from company to company. The best way to find out the safety record of any bus company is to put the name of the company with the words “hijackings” or “accidents” and googling the results. This way you will be able to see which companies are the best.
  • Most companies will have TV’s, toilets (how clean the toilets are depend on the company) and semi-cama or cama seats. All important factors which help determine the best company.
  • You will find while doing research that different companies offer different things. Some companies have special luxury class buses that come at a higher price, some companies, such as Cruz del Sur, have loyalty point schemes and other companies, such as Peru Hop , offer discounts on accommodation and other things. Make sure to check out a couple of different companies to see what benefits you can get and which will be the best for you.
  • Based on traveler reviews and feedback from users, Peru Hop is the best option for travel from Cusco to Puno. Their unique bus service offers everything that a traveler needs. I never expected this bus from Puno to Cusco to be that much fun. Yes, I am a bit of a culture geek and I love to learn about ancient history and culture.

I felt I was not getting enough cultural input during my first 2 weeks in South America. This was mainly because I was focusing on outdoor activities *read my epic fail hike in the Colca Canyon  and the wonders of nature from Chile and Bolivia. I missed the learning part a bit.

Relaxed way to travel around peru.

The bus from Puno to Cusco was very relaxed. All I had to do was show up on time in Puno and follow the herd . I know, not very adventurous but it was exactly what I needed. A guide accompanied us and he dished out all his knowledge to the group, which I absorbed like a sponge.

We visited different archaeological sites and ruins from the Ayamara, Quechua, Pukará and Inca culture. This was the perfect built up for the things to come in Cusco and Machu Picchu. To be honest, each different site along the bus route from Puno to Cusco, isn’t really worth a day trip. But…

Puno 3.827m / 12.555 ft. above sea level

I had to be at the Puno bus station at 6.30 am because the bus was leaving at 7.00 am. I took a taxi to the bus station and showed my ticket. I got on the bus which was absolutely freezing. Puno gets very cold at night and the bus still needed to heat up. I selected a nice spot by the window. The bus wasn’t full so this was an excellent way to travel . We would travel first for an hour or two, so I might have dozed off a bit here and there.

The first stop was the town of Pucará, 3.900m/ 12.795 ft. above sea level.

Lithic Museum Pucará

We first stopped at the Lithic Museum of Pucará where we saw an immense time line to put the whole reign of the culture of the Pucará in world’s history perspective.

The museum is small but shows some gruelling statues of decapitation which was common during the reign of the Pucará. They believed, if you decapitate your enemy, his strength will transvers into you.

Ruins of Kalassaya

After we exited through the gift shop, we left the village behind and explored the ruins of Kalassaya, a little outside Pucará. I found this mighty interesting as this was basically my first encounter with ancient ruins of South America and pre-Inca culture.

The ruins of the old town of Pucará are dated from 1.800 years BC . This was the reign of the Pukara culture and was the focus of the administration and religion.

The main thing to see is the ruins of the Kalassaya pyramid and the staircase. There is also a sunken court, but you need a lot of imagination to picture what might have happened there. All in all a great site with striking views of the small town of Pucará below and the Route of the Sun alongside it.

As you’re travelling as a tourist, you’ll be dropped off at a tourist restaurant where you’ll be served the tourist lunch menu for tourist prices. There isn’t anything else around to wonder off on your own, so I took the opportunity for a toilet break and waited for the bus to leave again.

Raqchi 3.450m / 11.319 ft. above sea level

After this, things got really exciting as we approached Raqchi. Raqchi is about 110 km from Cusco and I can recommend this as a day trip . We had little time as our tour guide guided us through the main ruins, but the complex is massive and I wish I would have had more time to wonder off and explore on my own.

But then again, if I hadn’t been on this tourist bus from Puno to Cusco, I wouldn’t have known about it.

So, what is so great about Raqchi in Peru?

When you travel from Puno to Cusco Peru you can fly, take the train or the bus. I'll tell you what to expect on the cultural bus trip from Puno to Cusco.

The ruins of Raqchi show you the remains of the Temple of Wiracocha (or Virachocha ), the main Inca god of creation . He was the god of the sun, the moon and civilisation.

His temple remains can be seen at the archaeological site of Raqchi , where you’ll see the adobe wall of the temple and many administration houses. In the hills overlooking the ruins, you’ll see the ancient Inca trail.

As Raqchi was an important religious Inca site , it was highly protected and the people here were monks, high priest and other noble men and guards.

The sky was striking blue, the grass turned the yellow of autumn. As the sun was blistering down on our little group, I saw history unfold before me. I looked up to the remains of the massive temple of Wiracocha and imagined what is was like in the 15 th century.

Andahuaylillas 3.093m / 10.147 ft. above sea level

After such a great complex of ruins, we moved to more modern times when we visited the church of the tiny town of Andahuaylillas . The church is referred to as the Sistine Chapel of South America , and although it was very beautiful and the frescos were vibrant, it doesn’t really compare.

But it was a nice church, and again I learned a lot about this cultural history. We learned that after the Spanish conquest, painters from Europe, educated local artists to make the same religious paintings in the new churches.

As the Peruvian artists had never seen European churches or art, they adapted their own style and form . Our guide showed us the key elements of catholic religion intertwined with the local Pachamama culture .

More info on Andahuaylillas .

We were not allowed to take any pictures inside the church, but we received a DVD with information and pictures. With your entrance ticket to Andahuaylillas you can also visit the churches of Huaro and Canincuna. These are part of the “ Ruta del Barroco Andino “ and with your ticket, you’ll help the social projects of these churches and the region.

After the last stop on the Puno to Cusco bus, we headed to Cusco. No more stopping until we reached the bus terminal of the tour company where I took a taxi downtown. We did see one more unique thing on the bus.

As we approached the Cusco Valley, the driver slowed down the bus, so we could all see the ancient Inca gate way to the Cusco Valley and the Sacred Valley of the Incas . The last sun beams of the day flowed through the holes in the ruins, giving it a magic spell.

This cultural bus tour from Puno to Cusco was over, but I never imagined it to be that much fun. I learned a lot about pre-Inca culture and Inca culture . And I learned about the adaptation of the Catholic religion from local Pachamama culture and I saw beautiful scenery along the way.

I was very happy to take this bus tour in Peru and I hope I peaked your interest to consider this journey if you travel by bus from Cusco to Puno or the other way around.

What is it like traveling on the Cusco to Puno Bus with Inka Express on our way to Lake Titicaca? It was incredible! Check out everything we saw!

We spent a few days in Cusco and the Sacred Valley after checking off our bucket list adventure of doing a Machu Picchu tour . Next up on our South America adventure was a visit to Lake Titicaca Peru with kids . But how do we get to South America’s largest lake? It turns out that the Cusco to Puno bus with Inka Express was the perfect option for us. You can read our entire two-week Peru itinerary here .

How to Get From Cusco to Puno

Table of Contents

When Kuoda Travel suggested that we take the Inka Express tour bus with kids to get from Cusco to Puno I was very apprehensive. How would the boys do on a 9+ hour ride on a crowded tourist bus? I inquired about alternatives to the bus. There were 3 three other possibilities: private car, plane or train.

Option 1: Hire a private car with driver

This was my first inkling as we were touring the rest of Peru with a driver. However, the cost was outside of our budget. This option would be great for avoiding tourist crowds. Private car tours are excellent since they allow you the ability to stop on demand and explore with much more freedom.

Of course, it is also possible to hire your own car and do a self-drive. This was not feasible for us as we had arrangements from Puno on. The fees we would have incurred for the one-way drop would have made the self-drive option also outside of our budget.

Option 2: Fly from Cusco to Juliaca

It is not actually possible to fly directly to Puno. Instead, you have to fly to the neighboring town of Juliaca. Although the nonstop flight is only an hour-long, time at the airport and the drive from Juliaca to Puno make this option longer than it seems at first. Although, the plane option does save some time over the bus ride. Ultimately though, we decided not to go this route as it would mean missing out on some amazing sites along the way.

Option 3: Riding the Andean Explorer train from Cusco to Puno

Taking the Andean Explorer  train from Cusco to Puno would have been a luxurious way to travel. The trip takes 10.5 hours and although it follows the road most of the way, it only makes one stop. While this Cusco to Puno train might be relaxing, from a sightseeing perspective, a Cusco to Puno bus is the best option for those wanting to experience Peru.

The Inka Express

Many buses in South America operate in a more similar fashion to airlines than what I’m used to in North America. There are various class levels from budget to luxury. But the luxury tour buses in South America are often still very reasonably priced. On top of that, they often offer high-class seating, refreshments, and even a host/hostess.

The Inca Express Cusco to Puno bus was billed as a luxury bus that provides comfortable seats and beverages. The bus did not disappoint. The Inka Express bus was clean and comfortable. The well-padded seats also reclined so the boys did not have any issues finding nap time on the road . Much to my surprise, there was also a server/hostess that traveled with us from Cusco to Sicuani (the halfway point of the trip). Another hostess joined us from Sicuani to Puno. After each stop, we were offered a beverage.

Our choices included: Inka Cola, water, coca tea or coffee. Just like in a plane, you could also ask for a beverage at any time. We encouraged the boys to drink lots so as to avoid altitude sickness. Luckily, there was no need to worry about having too much fluid either. There was a washroom on board.

Pro-Tip: You can purchase a bus ticket that includes the entrance fees to all the stops. However, if you choose not to, it is also possible to pay for the entrance fees to only the sites you want to see on the bus. Our driver collected the fees (cash only) at the start of the trip.

The Route of the Sun: Sightseeing on the Cusco to Puno Bus

The tourist route from Cusco to Puno is also dubbed the Route of the Sun . The distance from Cusco to Puno is 380 km but the ride on the tourist bus takes almost 10 hrs. This is because the bus stops every couple of hours to offer a chance to explore the fascinating sites along the way.

We were picked up at the hotel by 6 am to be driven to the bus station. Although we had pre-purchased our tickets, we still had to check-in at the on-site ticket office before falling in line. With assigned seating, getting to our seats was a breeze.

Andahuaylillas (elevation: 3093 m)

After going 45 km outside of Cusco, we had our first stop was in the village of Andahuaylillas. The village is known for its church, Iglesia de San Pedro, also known as the Cusquenian Sixtine Chapel or the Sistine Chapel of the Americas.

An adobe clad spanish style baroque church with a stone base is lit by the sun in Andahuaylillas Peru

Pro-Tip: Entrance to the church is 10 soles. If you do not want to enter the church, you don’t have to pay the fee and can wander around the square in front of the Iglesia de San Pedro.

It was disappointing to find out that we were not allowed to take photos inside the church. In lieu of this, we were provided with a CD full of photos and videos. The baroque interior was filled with carvings and paintings. Many were laden in gold-leaf. A guided tour is part of the entrance fee. We learned that the church has a guard round the clock to protect all the gold and silver treasures that are said to be held in the church.

Suspension Bridge Inca and Colonial Checacupe (elevation: 3414 m)

Next, we stopped in the Colonial town of Checacupe. The town has a church which we, unfortunately, didn’t have time to visit as we were in line to cross the replica Inca bridge in town. We were glad to have seen this bridge as we didn’t have time to visit the Q’eswachaka Rope Bridge in Quehue, Peru. Although the Urubamba river below didn’t look too fast, the bridge certainly looked intimidating at first glance. But C was insistent that he cross the shaky bridge by himself. Have a look at the video at the bottom of the page to see how well he did!

Archaeological Complex of Raqchi (elevation: 3475 m)

Our final stop before lunch was the small village of Raqchi (San Pedro de Cacha) to view the Inca ruin of Raqchi. The entrance fee was 10 soles. Upon entry, we immediately caught sight of the Temple of Wiracocha (also known as the Temple of Raqchi ). Wiracocha was a deity and according to the Incas, he was the creator god. The temple was built in his honor. It stands an enormous 92 m long (302ft) and 25.5 m wide (84ft). The Temple once had 22 columns (11 on each side) of stone blocks which held up the largest known Inca roof.

The towering 14 meter high Inca ruins of Raqchi Peru stand out against the blue sky on a stop on the Cusco to Puno bus

After the Temple, we visited the rest of the complex, thought to be one of the largest Inca sites to be discovered. There were living quarters, storehouses, and even ceremonial baths. The kids really enjoyed going around pretending to be archaeologists, taking pictures and discovering the site for the first time.

After going inside the archaeological complex for our guided tour, we walked around the square were many locals were selling pottery. We learned that the townspeople are expert potters and many of the decorative pieces sold in Pisac and Chinchero come from Raqchi. We also stopped to admire the town church before hopping onto the bus.

Sicuani (elevation: 3542 m)

Our next stop was for lunch. We stopped in the town of Sicuani, the capital of the province of Canshis, where a buffet restaurant that caters to tourists is set up. There was a small but interesting museum at the upper level of the building that held the restaurant. They had displays explaining Peruvian culture. After a brief visit, it was time for lunch.

The price of the buffet was included in the cost of the bus tour along with hot drinks (tea and coffee). Juices and other cold beverages were charged extra. There was a nice selection of food. The boys had no issues at all finding something to eat from the soup, to the main dishes, and dessert. In fact, I think they gave all the dessert choices two thumbs up.

La Raya (elevation: 4338 m)

Our first stop after lunch brought us to the highest point in our journey, La Raya. The area also marks the division between the departments of Cusco and Puno.

A Peruvian Quechua woman stands with a llama next to a sign in La Raya Peru on the Cusco to Puno bus tour

A small market was set up at the stop selling typical Peruvian wares such as sweaters, hats, scarves, and decorative rugs. We only had a few minutes to enjoy the majestic view of the snowy peaks of Apu Chimboya and take pictures. It certainly took our breath!

Pro-Tip:  The Inka Express is also equipped with an oxygen tank on board in case anybody had not yet fully acclimatized. Good thing they did as somebody on our bus tour needed it.

Pukara (elevation: 3879 m)

The last stop before Puno would be the village of Pukara (Pucara). The town is famous for its talented ceramists who craft the “ Toritos de Pucara ” or the little bulls of Pucara which can often be found adorning rooftops in houses in Peru. We also saw them adorning the fence surrounding the church of Pukara . Unfortunately, the church was closed at the time of our visit.

Across from the church was the Pucara Stone Museum (Museo Litico de Pucara).  There were some amazingly intact pieces of stonework and pottery that were from pre-Inca times. The source of the pieces was the archaeological complex Pucara found further up the road from the museum. Unfortunately, the archaeological complex was not part of the bus tour.

The museum rooms were tiny and the boys felt a little claustrophobic during the guided tour. They enjoyed the self-tour of the grounds, where several larger stone pieces were also displayed, much more.

How to Survive the Tourist bus with Kids

The last leg of our journey was just over an hour long. Before we knew it, it was 5 pm and we were pulling into the bus station in Puno. Even with all the sites, we visited, there was much more we wish we had time to see and explore.

The bus ride was comfortable. Also, the number of stops ensured the kids were not bored on the journey. We had some snacks for the journey, including some chocolates we made in the ChocoMuseo in Cusco . Having drinks freely available on board ensures that the kids stayed well hydrated.

C rides the Cusco to Puno bus with Inka Express

The one thing that was disappointing though was that the bus did not have in-seat power outlets. C enjoys listening to his audio books on long drives and as the ride was almost 10 hrs long, it would have been nice to have some place to keep iPads and cell phones charged. Have you been on a long bus ride with kids?

We looked at this bus ride with the same trepidation as you. 9 hours on a bus... are you nuts? We also had no idea about the stops along the way and what a great surprise they were. Totally agree that they really know how to run the bus services along this route.

Looks like a super solid tourisma bus Christina. And the views are just gorgeous. I only spent 2 weeks in Cusco and sometimes gazed at the surrounding Andes in awe, being stunned at the inspired beauty of the place. I hopped between Lima and Cusco via plane but the bus option looks best to Puno for seeing the sights and all that good stuff. Fabulous snaps.

How to plan the ultimate adventure to Peru, from the ancient Machu Picchu to the thermal waters of Cajamarca

From Andean peaks to Amazonian jungles and the ancient cities of the Incas, Peru offers the perfect base for an epic adventure.

A trip across Peru feels like passing through multiple countries and cultures merged into one. The topography is as diverse as it is dramatic; in just a few days, you can pass from the desert of the coastal lowlands to the saw-toothed, glacial peaks of the Andes Mountains and onwards to reach the emerald enclave of the world’s largest tropical rainforest. En route are thousands of 16th-century towns, Indigenous communities and archaeological sites, relics of ancient civilisations that have managed to capture the collective imagination like few others around the world.

Chief among those civilisations is the Inca, a superpower that ruled in the 15th century from modern-day Ecuador in the north, down to the Chilean capital of Santiago. Itineraries for first-time visitors focus on the heart of their empire, the Andean highlands of southern Peru. Tack on an extra week and you can discover the other big-hitting wonders of the country’s south, including Lake Titicaca, Arequipa city and the Nasca Lines. It’s a journey from mountains to dusty lowland desert: along the way, gaze at the barren Altiplano from a classic Pullman train carriage; sleep in a one-of-a-kind reed B & B; and glide above colossal geoglyphs in the   belly of a Cessna plane.

The Inca Empire was but a brief, 100-year chapter in the nation’s millennia-old story. And the north proves just how unparalleled that history is. Those with the time and curiosity to head beyond the staples are justly rewarded. Dusty cities and cloud-forest-fringed valleys conceal archaeological sites predating the Inca by hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Hikers will also find some   of South America’s finest trails in the high altitudes surrounding Huaraz’s glacier-studded national parks.

No matter where you go, Peruvian cuisine reflects this intersection of culture and nature. The gastronomy of Lima has risen to world-class status over the past two decades with dishes such as ceviche, where local fish is ‘flash cooked’ in lime juice — a form of marinating introduced by Japanese immigrants in the late 19th century. In the Andes, pachamanca is an ancient dish where potatoes and meat are still cooked by scorching hot stones.

Travel here is spectacular, but it can also be slow and, at times, frustrating. This is a country where distances are large and regional flights often require a connection through Lima. It’s a place that demands patience but the payoff is worth it.

Historical town within a valley

Itinerary 1: The big hitters

The south is the tourism capital of Peru, and for good reason: it packs a punch while remaining easily navigable. This itinerary begins in the high elevations of Cusco, gateway to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. South east is Lake Titicaca, where the Indigenous Uros people constructed homes out of unlikely materials for survival. The white architecture of Arequipa, the country’s second city, breaks up the journey from highlands to lowlands before you finish on the Pacific Coast, where the Nasca Lines reflect another of Peru’s ingenious ancient peoples.

Along the way, you’ll experience many different types of transport. Buses, flights and a handful of comfortable trains shuttle between   destinations, all with the guarantee of superlative views. The high elevations along the way — peaking at 11,152ft   in Cusco and 12,507ft at Lake Titicaca — are no holiday for your body or brain, so drink plenty of coca tea, a great local antidote to soroche (altitude sickness).

1. Cusco Fly from Lima to Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spanish invaders built baroque churches and terracotta-roofed mansions over Inca palaces, but the Sacsayhuamán fortress has survived as one of the best displays of Inca architecture. Take a taxi to this archaeological site, located just above the city, where you’ll find walls constructed from a perfect jigsaw of boulders weighing up to 120 tonnes apiece.

2. Sacred Valley Named for its spiritual and agrarian importance to the Inca people, this valley remains the region’s breadbasket. Explore Moray, where stepped, concentric terraces acted as a sophisticated agricultural laboratory for the Inca, before heading to Chinchero market. Merchants gather here to sell handwoven llama and alpaca wool textiles, and you can sample roast guinea pig — a local delicacy. At the end of the day, head to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, home to the ruins of an Inca fortress, and overnight at El Albergue , a family-run B & B in a historic hacienda.

3. Machu Picchu From Ollantaytambo, PeruRail’s Vistadome train races to Aguas Calientes, the town right beneath Machu Picchu. Spend a day here, exploring the centre and stay at Inkaterra , a hotel in 12 acres of cloud forest, home to 214 species of bird — including hummingbirds, the golden-headed quetzal and the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock — and 372 of native orchid.

The next morning, head to Machu Picchu , the ancient citadel that’s become a symbol of the lost Inca Empire since being revealed to the wider world by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. Take the first bus to its entrance at 6am to watch the sun rise over its terraces and the brooding Huayna Picchu mountain.

4. Lake Titicaca The ticket back from Aguas Calientes to Cusco with PeruRail covers both the train to Ollantaytambo and the onward bus trip. From Cusco, settle into the observation car to watch the grassy plains of the Altiplano whip past during the 10-hour train ride to Puno, the gateway town to Lake Titicaca . Floating on its waters are the 120-or-so Uros Islands, feats of engineering first constructed from totora reeds by the Indigenous Uros over 500 years ago to escape Inca invasion. Uros people still live here and visitors can now overnight in their reed guesthouses. Book with All Ways Travel, whose profits go to local communities.

5. Arequipa A six-hour bus journey from Lake Titicaca, Arequipa is nicknamed White City for the volcanic sillar used to construct its baroque architecture. Arequipeño gastronomy is a source of pride, so head to a traditional picantería restaurant to sample rocoto relleno, a spicy stuffed pepper dish filled with meat, cheese and eggs, cooked over a wood fire.

7. Nasca lines A final eight-hour bus journey takes you down from the mountains and along the coast to reach the town of Nasca. Here, a tour by light aircraft gives you the best views of the Nasca Lines, giant geoglyphs showing hummingbirds, monkeys and other shapes etched into the desert over 2,000 years ago — although how, or why, remains a mystery.

Itinerary 2: Highlights of the North

Witnessing little international attention, northern Peru receives just a fraction of the visitors of the better-known south. Yet it’s home to some of the country’s richest archaeological sites, as well as natural wonders you’re likely to have to yourself.

Start in the Cordillera Blanca, an Andean sub-range of sky-reaching peaks, before making your way to the coast. Pre-Columbian artefacts abound outside the metropolises of Chiclayo and Trujillo, where museums are stacked to the rafters with gold, and adobe pyramids built between 100 and 800 CE still stand proud. Then, from the city of Cajamarca — where you can soak in thermal waters once frequented by Inca emperors — a road traces through the mountains to the green Amazonas region for the last stops on this itinerary.

Tourism is nascent in the north and the infrastructure reflects this. Domestic flights are either non-existent or require a stopover in Lima, so bus journeys often offer the most direct transit between destinations. They can be long, slow and occasionally hair-raising —   but as you whizz past adobe villages tucked into mountain passes and career alongside yawning valleys, you’ll feel like you’re travelling through time, too.

1. Huaraz From Lima, buses take around nine hours to reach this high-altitude city. Give yourself two days to acclimatise with short hikes around the surrounding Cordillera Blanca, then join Turismo Andino on a two-day trek to Lake 69 in Huascarán National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site. You’ll clamber high into glacier-sheathed mountains and through valleys splashed with   crystalline lakes — and stay overnight in a rustic lodge with pisco sours on tap.

2. Trujillo It’s a seven-hour bus ride to the dusty, 16th-century city of Trujillo . A local highlight is Huaca de la Luna, an adobe pyramid built by the pre-Incan Moche civilisation, whose use of human sacrifices is recorded in grisly friezes. Next, catch some waves at the nearby beach town of Huanchaco aboard a caballito de totora, reed boats first used by fishermen 3,000 years ago and considered by some to be the predecessors of modern surfboards.

3. Cajamarca Second only to Cusco for its elegant architecture and a six-hour bus journey inland, Cajamarca is where the fate of the Inca was sealed. To secure his release after having been imprisoned by the Spanish, final Inca leader Atahualpa supposedly called for his subjects across the empire to send enough gold and silver to fill a room, but was executed regardless in 1533. Los Baños del Inca , said to have been his favourite thermal waters, are just a few miles away and still open to visitors.

4. Gocta Falls Bring earplugs, an eye mask and a jumper for the long, 12-hour bus ride to Cajamarca: temperatures on board tend to be either glacial or sweltering. The six-hour hike to the base of Gocta Falls is worth the mud: one of the world’s tallest single-drop waterfalls, it plunges 2,530ft from clifftop to cloud-forested valley floor. Spend the night in a cabin with a view at Gocta Natura Reserve .

5. Chiclayo There’s more history on display a four-hour bus journey away, inside Chiclayo’s under-the-radar Museo de Tumbas Reales del Senor de Sipán . A 20-minute taxi ride from the city centre, it has a staggering, three-floor collection showcasing gold artefacts discovered in the tombs of a nearby Moche site. Afterwards, get lost in Mercado de Brujos (Witch Doctors’ Market), where you can find folk remedies said to help mend a broken heart, charms to attract wealth and everything in between.

6. Utcubamba Valley Finish your trip with a two-hour bus ride through the Utcubamba Valley and Leymebamba town, where the namesake museum features 200 mummies discovered in a local cave in 1997. They belong to the Chachapoya, warrior people who predate the Inca by over six centuries. Learn more about them at their walled city of Kuélap, where 400 circular houses are built on a high ridge.

Here, you can leave most of your luggage in safe storage and continue travelling with a small pack of essentials. You’ll take a motorised canoe upriver to your jungle lodge right in the middle of the jungle, in the Madre de Dios area – this is a real pinch-me moment! The next two days are packed with activities. Your full day in the jungle includes a half-day trek – this can get muddy and tiring, but what better way to explore the Amazon than on foot. There will be regular stops on the way and you'll encounter diverse flora and fauna in their natural habitat. You might even spot macaws, monkeys, peccaries, jabirus and otters, not to mention thousands of butterflies. The guides will also teach you about the medicinal properties and practical uses of the local plants. For your night-time excursion, you’ll venture out in the dark in search of caimans on the Tambopata River. The naturalist guide will use a spotlight to locate them on the banks of the river, so you can observe them from a respectable distance. Travelling in the dark, on the river in the jungle can be a bit spooky, but this atmosphere just adds to the fun.

  • Amazon Jungle - Jungle Lodge Stay and Activities

Your travel time on Day 2 will be approximately 7 hours.

You’ll stay at two different lodges in the same area. The activities may vary slightly according to which lodge you’re in. The included night excursion may be on the night of Day 1 or Day 2. As both lodges are in the same area of the jungle, you’ll see the same wildlife and your overall jungle experience will be the same at either lodge.

Say goodbye to the jungle and fly to Cusco, where you’ll spend the day acclimatising to the high altitude. After dropping off your luggage and having some lunch, your leader will take you on a walk around downtown Cusco. You’ll visit the facade of Qoricancha temple, the local San Pedro market, the main square, the Twelve Angled Stone, Regocijo Square and San Blas Square. Maybe try some donas along the way. This afternoon is free to explore. Maybe head to the Cusco cathedral or discover the history of Saqsaywaman. As you’re acclimatising today, it’s recommended that you keep strenuous activity to a minimum.

This morning, unwind on a drive through the Sacred Valley, on the fringes of Cusco. Known as Wilcamayo to the Incas – this lush, fertile valley has long been the main source of food for the high Andes. Head to a local community to learn about the valley’s lifestyle and activities – if your travel falls on a Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday, it’s market day! Comb the stalls in search of hand-painted beads or warm ponchos and master the local Quechuan language (a few words will be deemed a success). Take a short drive to Ollantaytambo. Later in the afternoon, maybe head out to visit Ollantaytambo’s awesome Incan ruins. Tonight, rest up at your hotel and prepare for the Inca Trail.

  • Sacred Valley - Community visit & lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours including activities.

Depending on the travel arrangements you made before the trip, during the next four days, you’ll be doing one of the following – hiking the Inca Trail (Route 1), hiking the Quarry Trail (Route 2) or staying in Cusco for two days before taking the train to Aguas Calientes (Route 3). All routes visit Machu Picchu.

The bulk of your luggage will be stored at your hotel. If you’re hiking the Inca Trail or the Quarry Trail, the evening before you leave Cusco you'll receive a small duffle bag to carry your clothes in for the next four days (5 kg maximum). Your team of porters will carry these bags for you, along with the trail's food and equipment. You won't have access to these items until the end of each day, as the porters will always be ahead of the group. If you’re travelling to Aguas Calientes by train, you'll be able to leave most of your luggage at the hotel in Cusco and travel with only a small bag for the overnight stay in Aguas Calientes. Route 1 Inca Trail Travel by minivan to the 82 km marker and meet your crew of local porters, your cook and your guide. Today you’ll trek uphill to the campsite, 3100 m above sea level. On the way, you’ll see the Inca sites of Ollantaytambo, Huillca Raccay and Llactapata, as well as incredible views of snow-capped Veronica Peak. Tonight, unwind at the campsite with a nourishing meal prepared by your cook. Route 2 Quarry Trail Make an early start today and drive to Choquequilla, a small ceremonial place where Incas worshipped the moon. From here, you’ll head to the small community near Qory Song’o (Golden Heart) hill, where you’ll climb to the top for the incredible views of the Soqma Perolniyoc, Pachar and Huarocondo valleys. There are also several sacred tombs in the area, protected by the locals, which you can explore with your leader and even see some of the original structures crafted from wood and leather. These remains have never been seen by travellers before, so you can be a part of this exclusive experience. Carry on to the Perolniyoc Cascade lookout, where you can stop for some snacks and photos. Arrive at the campsite, 3700 m above sea level, around lunchtime. After, set off to explore the Q'orimarca archaeological site, which once served as a checkpoint to the Incas. Route 3 Cusco Enjoy a free day in Cusco – the heart and soul of Peru. You may like to purchase a boleto turistico, which allows entry to the city's many museums and archaeological sites. Ask your leader for their recommendations.

  • Camping on trek or Hotel (1 night)
  • 3 Night/4 Day Inca Trail (or 2 Night/3 Day Inca Quarry Trail) guided hike(s) with porters' support. Or guided Cusco stay (Machu Picchu by train)

Included lunch and dinner today are for travellers on the trekking options only. The Inca Trail is within the abilities of most people with moderate fitness. The trail is 45 km long and often steep, so come prepared. Each day's journey generally consists of seven hours of walking (uphill and downhill), with stops for snacks and lunch. Trekking usually begins at 7 am (except on Day 4) and you reach the campsite around 5 pm. Accommodation on the trek is camping (three nights). Double tents (twin-share) and foam camping mats will be provided. The porters will set up the tents while the cook prepares meals. The Quarry Trail is suitable for those with a moderate level of fitness. The hike is 26 km long in total and its highest pass is at 4450 m above sea level. Throughout the trek, horses will carry your gear and camping equipment. The first two nights are spent camping and the third night you will stay at a simple hotel. Double tents (twin-share) and foam camping mats will be provided.

Route 1 Inca Trail Today is the most challenging day of the trek, as you’ll ascend a 5-hour long steep path to the highest point of the trail. Colloquially known as 'Dead Woman's Pass', Warmiwanusca sits at a height of 4200 m above sea level, providing amazing views of the valley below. The group will then descend to the campsite in the Pacaymayo Valley at 3650 m. Route 2 Quarry Trail Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of the trek. A 3-hour long walk takes you to the top of the first pass of Puccaqasa (approximately 4370 m high). After enjoying picturesque views of the valley, you’ll stop for lunch. Then make the 2-hour hike to Kuychicassa – the highest pass of the trek at 4450 m. From here, descend to the sacred site the Incas called Intipunku. This is a sun gate, where the sun will stream through at particular times of the year, and there are views of the Nevado Veronica mountain year-round. The Incas built several sun gates, the most notable overlooking Machu Picchu. Head to the campsite, only a stone’s throw away, at 3600 m. Your trek today will take about 5 hours. Route 3 Cusco Today is yours to spend as you wish in Cusco. Perhaps use the day to indulge your inner foodie at Cusco's many cafes, restaurants and markets. The ChocoMuseo is a must for those with a sweet tooth – they offer tastings and chocolate-making workshops, too.

Included lunch and dinner on this day are for travellers on the trekking options only.

Route 1 Inca Trail Start the day with a climb through the Pacaymayo Valley to Runkuracay Pass (3980 m). Enjoy views of the snow-capped mountain of Cordillera Vilcabamba before descending for 2 to 3 hours to the ruins of Sayacmarca. Continue over the trail’s third pass to the ruins of Phuyupatamarca (3850 m), also known as 'Town Above the Clouds'. Start the 2-hour descent down the Inca steps to the final night's campsite by the Winay Wayna archaeological site. Route 2 Quarry Trail Today’s hike will all be downhill. The first stop is the incomplete Kachiqata Quarry, where the Incas were intercepted by the Spanish. If time permits, you can explore the cobbled streets of Ollantaytambo before taking the short train journey to Aguas Calientes. This is where you’ll meet with the travellers in your group who didn't hike. Spend the night in a hotel before tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu. Route 3 Train to Aguas Calientes After a drive to Ollantaytambo, catch a train through the winding Urubamba Valley to Aguas Calientes. The city is nestled in the cloud forest at the foot of Machu Picchu. This is where you’ll meet up with the travellers in your group who hiked the Quarry Trail. Spend the night in a hotel before tomorrow’s visit to Machu Picchu.

Included lunch and dinner on this day are for travellers on the Inca Trail only. There will be an included lunch for travellers on the Quarry Trail.

Route 1 Inca Trail This is the final and most spectacular leg of the trek to Machu Picchu. Start your day before dawn with breakfast at a crisp 4 am. Say farewell to the porters as they descend to the train station and then begin hiking. Walk 2.5 hours to Intipunku (the Sun Gate) and, weather permitting, enjoy unforgettable views over the ‘Lost City of the Incas’ as you enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate. When you arrive, all the hiking and the early morning will definitely be worth it! Route 2 and 3 Machu Picchu to Cusco Take an early bus up to Machu Picchu at 5.30 am. The city was built around 1440 AD as a country retreat for Incan nobility, but there’s evidence that the land had been a sacred Incan site for much longer. Take a guided tour around the ruins of temples, palaces and living quarters. For all travellers, after taking advantage of the seemingly endless photo opportunities, it's time to catch the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll stop for lunch together. From here, take a scenic train ride to Ollantaytambo, then drive back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.

  • Machu Picchu - Guided tour

According to Machu Picchu visiting regulations, all visitors must follow a pre-determined route within the site. This route must be followed in one direction only, and once you exit, re-entering the site is not permitted. Personal exploration is not permitted. Due to safety reasons, the final checkpoint for all trekkers does not open until 5 am. The estimated arrival time at Machu Picchu's Sun Gate for Inca Trail trekkers is approximately 7.30 am. For Quarry Trail trekkers and train travellers, the first bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu departs at 5.30 am. The estimated arrival time is between 6 and 6.30 am. The sun rises at Machu Picchu at approximately 5.30 am, therefore it's not possible to be there in time for sunrise. Due to Intrepid's internal safety policy, our leaders are specifically prohibited from recommending or assisting with booking trips to the mountaintop ruins of Wayna Picchu.

Today you’ll enjoy free time to relax, shop for souvenirs or see more of Cusco's sites. Maybe head to a cafe on the Plaza de Armas, or if you're a thrill-seeker, try mountain biking in the hills surrounding Cusco. You might also want to go for a walk through Seven Borreguitos – one of the most photogenic streets in Cusco. In the evening, you might want to head out to dinner with your group and share photos of your Machu Picchu experience. Cusco is also a hotspot for fun nightlife, so if you’re feeling like a boogie or a cocktail, grab your new mates and hit the streets.

This morning, travel by bus through the Altiplano plateau to Puno. The town is known as the folklore capital of Peru and is famous for its traditional dances. If you're lucky, your visit might coincide with an evening parade, when the streets fill with costumed dancers and musicians. When you’re settled, maybe head out and make the most of the nightlife.

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

Puno continues to experience some occasional ongoing political unrest. With safety always our priority, on some departures, we may need to use alternative transportation to avoid affected areas. Your leader will advise of any specific changes to transport or the itinerary in this destination.

Puno sits on Lake Titicaca's shores – the world's highest navigable lake. Today, you'll take a tour of the lake by slow motorboat, stopping off to visit the Uros floating islands. The Uros peoples built these islands to isolate themselves from rival tribes in ancient times. They're built completely from multiple layers of totora reeds, which grow in the shallows of the lake. Tonight is your homestay in a local community on Llachon – a cosy mud-brick house with shared drop-toilets (no shower is available here). It can get quite cold, but the homestay will provide plenty of blankets. It’s recommended that you pack thermals and plenty of layers. Help your host family with their daily activities or maybe play a game of soccer in the village.

  • Homestay (1 night)
  • Lake Titicaca - Boat tour & Homestay

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Enjoy a home-cooked breakfast by your host family this morning, learning about their life and their stories. Then, explore the rest of the island. In the afternoon, take the boat back to Puno, where the rest of your day is free to explore.

12 breakfasts, 7 lunches, 6 dinners

Camping (with basic facilities) (3 nights), Homestay (1 night), Hotel (6 nights), Jungle Lodge (2 nights)
