Genoa to Portofino: How to Get to Portofino by Car, Bus, Plane or Ferry

Portofino is a town in Liguria , located in the province of Genoa , with about 400 inhabitants. For this reason, it is the smallest municipality in Italy .

Although it is only a fishing village, it is renowned for its picturesque landscapes consisting of pastel-coloured houses, typical restaurants and high fashion shops.

To enjoy it to the fullest I recommend that you visit it in low season periods such as May or mid-September/October , when the climate is mild and the village is not yet swarming with tourists or paparazzi hunting VIPs.

If you want to reach Portofino by car from Rapallo , I have good news for you because in just twenty minutes you will be there.

The road to follow is the Provincial Road 227 of Portofino.

Please note: the municipality of Portofino is a pedestrian zone and motor vehicle access/transit is only allowed if authorised.

You can leave your car in the covered pay car park located in Piazza Martiri della Libertà , open 24 hours a day.

There is also free parking on Santa Margherita street, just in front of the disco Covo Nord Est.

From here you can reach the center on foot or by bus, it’s up to you to choose.

Have you decided to take a nice walk and get up to Rapallo, without spending any money?

You will reach this beautiful city with postcard-perfect scenery in about an hour and a half/two.

I recommend this excursion to those who have a passion for trekking because you can truly soak up the magnificent landscapes .

The travel itinerary includes the passage to Santa Margherita , where of course you can make a stop to recover from the long trek.

As far as the level of difficulty is concerned , this is not a particularly complex route, but it requires a minimum of training to face these eight kilometres with peace of mind.

In Rapallo, there are several bus routes that will allow you to easily reach Portofino , with the most common being number 7 and 82 ( check the Portofino 82 bus timetable ).

The duration of the trip is about 35-40 minutes and is very cheap .

You also have the possibility to take only the latter if you arrive at Santa Margherita Ligure FS by train .

The trip takes only three minutes and costs a maximum of 5€ , depending on whether you are on a Regional, Regional Fast or Inter City. At this station, you can then take bus 82, which runs every thirty minutes.

You can, of course, reach Portofino by sea by taking a ferry from Tigullio-Marine Lines.

To find more information about the timetables, I recommend you consult the cruise company through their website , or call 0185-284670.

The duration of the trip is about thirty minutes , and the price of the ticket is between 7 and 10€.

Taking the ferry is an excellent solution to avoid the stress of driving and looking for parking , especially during the period of July and August when Portofino is full of visitors.

How to get to Portofino from Camogli

If you are in Camogli and want to organize a small excursion to Portofino , I will show you all the best options below.

From Camogli you can take two roads : Via Romana, SS1 Via Aurelia and Provincial Road 227 of Portofino or Via Aurelia and Provincial Road 227 of Portofino. The routes differ only by a few kilometers, but I suggest you consult your satellite navigator to reach your destination in a shorter time, as it will be able to indicate the fastest route at the moment and will help you avoid any traffic jams.

To reach Portofino from Camogli , you have to go to the station of Camogli S. Fruttuoso, get off at the stop Santa Margherita Ligure Portofino, make a change to Santa Margherita Ligure FS and take the bus number 82.

From Camogli you can take the bus number 71-73 or 73C to Santa Margherita Ligure and from there take the number 82 . The journey will take about fifty minutes and costs less than five euros ( check the Portofino 82 bus timetable ).

From Milan to Portofino

milan

Over 150km separate Milan and this town in Liguria. For this reason, the only two ways to reach it are by car and train .

From Milan to Portofino by car

If you depart from Milan you can reach Portofino via the A7 (the shortest road), the E25 and A7 or the A26 motorway, the latter being the longest route, as it requires more than three hours of driving time .

The bad news is that there are no direct trains between Milan Centrale and Portofino – it is necessary to make at least one change in Genoa Piazza Principe and from here take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino . The duration of the trip, including the change, is about two and a half hours .

If you are looking for a memorable experience , you can opt for the organized day tour from Milan to Portofino . This is a 10-hour excursion , departing at 7 a.m. from Milan , stopping in Genoa for a guided tour, after which you depart in the direction of Portofino, where you arrive by sea from Santa Margherita . How to get to Portofino: FAQ

Yes , it is possible to get to Portofino by car, but there is one thing you should be aware of before you decide to get to Portofino by car: in the center of Portofino, there are very few parking lots and the few available are priced heavily , so keep in mind that, especially in high season, you may risk not finding a spot and having to wait for a parking space to become available. If you decide to arrive in Portofino by car, I therefore recommend that you park in Santa Margherita Ligure (I recommend you read the article on the best parking spots near Portofino ) and continue on foot or by bus 82.

The nearest airport to Portofino is Genoa , which is 45 km from the town . The route to take by car is the A12 motorway , exit at Rapallo. From here, follow the signs for Santa Margherita . In order to meet the needs of our guests, many hotels offer a transfer service to/from the airport . If the hotel where you have decided to stay does not provide such a facility, don’t worry, because a new shuttle has just been inaugurated that leaves from the Genoese airport .

No, there is no train station in Portofino . The nearest one is in Santa Margherita Ligure. If you want to reach Portofino by train, you have to take one from Genova Brignole station (Regional, Regional Veloce or Inter City) and get off at Santa Margherita Ligure. From here you can take a taxi or bus 82.

If you happen to be in Liguria, you can’t miss out on focaccia , because it’s a real delicacy here. You will find focaccerie almost everywhere and before leaving I suggest you stock up so that this treat can be tasted by your loved ones back home because it will certainly be a very welcome gift. As for the best restaurants in Portofino , I recommend the following: – Puny Restaurant: located in Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta 4-5, its cuisine is renowned throughout the world. Its courses are simple but definitely rich in taste, for example, spaghetti with whitebait, pappardelle with tomato and pesto or octopus with artichokes. – Taverna del Marinaio: also located in Piazza Martiri dell’Olivetta (but at number 36), this restaurant offers the opportunity to taste both seafood specialties and delicious meats – just think of a mixed appetizer platter and much more. – Ö Magazín: This restaurant, housed in an old fishing equipment warehouse, offers an impressive view of the port, located in Calata Marconi. Thanks to its location, you can enjoy your meal in absolute peace and privacy. Try the house starter, fish skewer or spaghetti with squid.

There are not many hotels in Portofino , but here are a few examples. – Belmond Splendido Mare : 4 star hotel located in Via Roma 2, offers visitors finely furnished rooms or suites. If you’re travelling with children, you can entrust them to the Smile Club, where they’ll have the chance to do a number of fun activities such as creating mosaics, cooking or taking part in exciting treasure hunts. – Hotel Nazionale : three star hotel located right in the square of Portofino, from which you can admire the port and all the characteristic corners of the city. Being family-run, it offers a very simple and friendly welcome. It is also connected with the restaurant da Nicola, where you can enjoy excellent fish dishes. – Hotel Piccolo Portofino : this hotel has been created from a period villa and its interiors have a modern design. Rooms are divided into three categories: classic, superior or deluxe. Pets are allowed, as long as they are small. The price includes: breakfast, WiFi connection, access to the private beach and a courtesy set of cosmetics.

Well, we’ve come to the end of this long article on how to get to Portofino .

Whether you have chosen to travel by car, train or boat , know that the view that awaits you at your arrival will be breathtaking , and will leave you truly speechless.

Hello Andrea… what is the best way to see Portofino from Arenzano?

Hi Guillermo,

To get from Arenzano to Portofino you have two options:

1) By car : you have to take the highway in Arenzano and exit at Rapallo, after which you continue to Portofino. The duration is about 1 hour

2) By train : you have to take the train from Arenzano station and get off at Santa Margherita Ligure, after which you continue on foot (if you like walking, you will have a lot of fun, as the walk is very picturesque) or by bus. The duration is about 1.45

How to get to Portofino by train – Complete guide to get to the most beautiful village in the world!

Here is the complete guide on how to get to Portofino by train, whether you want to take a day trip or a multi-day holiday in the “Borgo”.

Portofino piazzetta

We will explain all the ways to reach Portofino by train and visit the “Borgo” in complete tranquility.

👉 There are two really important things to know, if you are planning your vacation to Portofino.

Take also a look at:   Portofino, what to do and 5 places you must see!

✔ The train is THE RECOMMENDED way to reach Portofino, especially in summer.

In summer, the number of trains is significantly increased for tourists: you will find (approximately) one run every 30 minutes.

If possible, leave the car “at home”: don’t try “venturing” towards Portofino, looking for a parking space that… is not there! In the summer, it is a mission IMPOSSIBLE.

❌ Portofino does NOT have its own train station.

You have to get off at the SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE/PORTOFINO train station and reach Portofino in another ways.

Portofino come arrivare in treno - How to get to Portofino by train

Don’t worry, it’s very simple!

Continuing the reading, we will explain step by step how to reach Portofino once you get off at Santa Margherita Ligure, with all public transport available.

You will see: that there are many easy options.

Take also a look at:   5 things to see in Santa Margherita Ligure

How to get to Portofino by train – which trains to take

In this guide we do not give you all the timetables and train combinations, because you can find them easily from the TRENITALIA website .

We explain how the railway connections in this area work and, above all, some really useful tips for getting around by train in this area of Liguria.

👉 If your departure station is Genoa, Cinque Terre or La Spezia , we recommend you to take a REGIONAL/REGIONAL FAST train. The reasons are two.

First , because if you have never seen the Ligurian coast and its villages from the train, this is the right opportunity to do so. You will love it!

Second, because fast regional / regional trains are very frequent – in summer, as we have said, every 30 minutes (sometimes even less) – and they certainly stop in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Important clarification: 85% of the trains on the Genoa-La Spezia line stop in Santa Margherita. In Rapallo, practically 99% of the convoys stopped.

We tell you more about this, below.

Take a look at:   San Fruttuoso di Camogli by boat, how to get there?

Portofino how to arrive by train from outside the region (or from Ponente Ligure)

It is completely different if your departure station is from the other side of Liguria or from other region, like Piemonte, Lombardia etc. In these cases, DON’T take regional/local trains .

In our experience, it is better to spend a little more because with all the intermediate stops in the various cities, the journey becomes endless.

Choose an Intercity, a Freccia Bianca or a long-distance train. It will take you less time.

If you don’t have a direct connection from your departure station and you need to change the train, you can get off at Genoa Brignole/Principe or La Spezia Centrale. Here you will find many trains to complete the route.

It may also be useful to go down to Rapallo instead. Now we explain why.

Take also a look at:   Portofino beach, the best 3 beaches in Portofino!

Why can you also go down to Rapallo?

As we said before, not all long-distance trains stop at “Santa”, while they certainly stop in Rapallo.

This is the case, for example, of some trains to and from Milan or Turin, the Freccia Bianca to Rome and others.

If the train you would like to take does not stop in Santa Margherita, don’t worry: get off at Rapallo station (for those who don’t know, Rapallo is the town bordering Santa Margherita).

Stazione di Rapallo

From here, you can wait for the first useful train to Santa Margherita (the journey takes just a moment, about 4 minutes), or leave the station and, in front of you, you have the bus terminal outside.

Buy your ticket at the ticket office or machine and take the first available bus. They are about one every 20/25 minutes (you will find all the indications on the spot).

Let’s go back to the main hypothesis: you got off in Santa Margherita Ligure. And now… how can you reach Portofino?

Take a look at:   The incredible Christ of the Abyss in San Fruttuoso

How to reach Portofino from Santa Margherita?

You’re in Santa Margherita Ligure and you want to reach Portofino: you have several possibilities.

Outside the station, you will find electric bicycles, taxis and, a few meters on the same sidewalk, the bus stop – Line 782 for Portofino (Here it is in the photo 👇 below).

Portofino come arrivare in treno-autobus

The bus is one of the best options, although during peak summer periods they can be crowded. Buy your ticket at the station bar and get in the carriage!

When you buy the ticket, specify the destination Portofino: the rate for Portofino is different from the ordinary one (it costs more).

Take a look at: how to get to San Fruttuoso di Camogli – Full Tutorial

If you want to have a unique experience , we absolutely recommend you to take the FERRY to Portofino.

Ghiaia Santa Margherita Ligure

Go down the stairs in front of the Railway Station (photo 👇 below) and you will reach the promenade (photo 👆 above) in less than 2 minutes.

You will find – on your right – the boarding pier of the boats (and, shortly before, also the main terminal of the bus).

Portofino come arrivare in treno

Ferry boats are active during the summer, from May / June to September/October and the races depart every hour.

If you don’t suffer from seasickness, it may be a good idea to reach Portofino by sea and come back by bus or on foot (or vice versa).

Take a look at:   Tigullio: 10 (and more) reason for a Winter visit

How to get to Portofino by train and then… on foot!

We left for last (but not least) the more “sporty” option among those available to get to Portofino from Santa Margherita.

Paraggi spiaggia

If you love to walk and, above all, you have not heavy suitcases and luggage, you can take the splendid pedestrian promenade that connects the two towns, all by the sea, with breathtaking views.

Once in Paraggi , about halfway along the route, you can choose to continue by the sea or to take the last part of the famous Walk of Kisses , one of the most beautiful stretches in all of Liguria.

Take a look at: Paraggi Bay, every thing you need to know about this place!

We explain you once again, because every summer we see incredible scenes, several times along the road to Portofino…

If you are free of luggage – or you have a light backpack – you can easily take the walk: it is just 5 km, all flat and it takes about 50/55 minutes.

Many day tourists do that.

If you have many luggage and you need to reach a private house or a hotel, we advise you not to “do it on foot”. Take one of the vehicles we mentioned above: it’s the best way!

Take also a look at:   Walk of kisses, the best path in Portofino!

Portofino (& Santa Margherita) Day Trip from Genoa

Sunset over Santa Margherita, Italy

Italy is known for a lot of drop-dead-gorgeous places , but the most famous one’s don’t fit the typical travel budget (Capri, Venice, Lake Como…). At least – they don’t fit mine! That never stops me though. I just have to find ways to be creative. Portofino was one of those way-too-expensive places for me (one night at Belmond Hotel Splendido starting at €832? *calmly closes laptop and walks away*). But it had been on my saved images on Instagram bucket list for way too long to simply skip it during my five-week trip in North Italy. So, I decided I would day trip from nearby Genoa , multiple days if I had to! And day trip I did. Not only did I get to experience Portofino, but nearby Santa Margherita as well, and a combined day trip to both is now something I would highly recommend. Thus, I’ve created this travel guide detailing exactly how to visit Portofino and Santa Margherita on a day trip from Genoa. This is also the most budget-friendly way to enjoy the beauty that is Portofino. Ready?!

HOW TO GET TO PORTOFINO FROM GENOA BY TRAIN

Travel from genoa to santa marghertia by train.

Start the day (ideally) somewhat early, and head to Genoa Brignole train station. Catch a regional train heading to or stopping in S. Margherita Ligure-Portofino for €3.60 one way. In forty minutes, you’ll be in sunny Santa Margherita. You can also purchase a ticket for half the travel time, but double the price. ( Check train schedules the night before.)

Travel from Santa Margherita to Portofino by Bus

For now, skip Santa Margherita, and make your way straight to Portofino, to try to beat out some other day-trippers . From the train station, head to the bus station I’ve highlighted on the map below. Go inside the small building, and purchase a round trip ticket to Portofino from the attendant inside. Tickets cost €3 one-way and €5 round-trip. The attendant will let you know the bus number and where to wait for it. Buses come rather frequently, since everyone is trying to get to the same place (you might have to stand)!

TOP THINGS TO DO IN PORTOFINO

Portofino harbor and yachts.

Personally, I was less than impressed by this pretty little place. Due to its small size and large popularity, I simply did not like the atmosphere. Its few streets felt overly crowded, the gelato was the most expensive I saw during my entire five-week Italy trip (more than in Venice or Milan!), and it felt like a spot for retirees to just sit, eat, and shop. That being said, I DO still recommend a visit . I just don’t recommend making it too long. Within a couple hours, I recommend being sure to see the following.

Window Shop Around the Town Center

Cafe chairs and hanging flowers along the waterfront of Portofino harbor.

Once in Portofino, explore as you please. There are several outdoor cafes for an early lunch lining the harbor and main plaza , but these are pretty pricey. I recommend bringing some sort of packed picnic lunch if you’re on a budget . Make a lap around the few streets and the edge of the harbor, and you’ve honestly seen most of what there is to see in town.

Hike to Castello Brown

Castello Brown on a hill behind Portofino harbor with boats.

Hike to Castello Brown for the best views over Portofino. The scenery all along the walk will have you turning around and snapping pics from every angle. If you care to enter the castle towards the end of this trail (I didn’t), it’s a  €5 entry fee. The trail is uphill but very doable , and there are even benches every now and then for you to relax and take in the view.

Chiesa Divo Martino

Chiesa Divo Martino in Portofino, Italy.

Keep walking past the castle until you reach Chiesa Divo Martino . This tiny church is free to enter, but rather underwhelming, in my opinion. But the views over the water are unreal from the open area to the side of the church. No filter needed to see how bright blue the Ligurian Sea is.

Baia Cannone

Orange building hanging off a cliff in Baia Cannone, Portofino, Italy.

Head back down into town and walk around as you please. Once done with Portofino, start walking uphill. Stop by Chiesa di San Martino e Giorgio on your way to the car road. You’ll pass by this picturesque insta- famous pink and orange building hanging off a cliff in Baia Cannone .

Paraggi Beach

Paraggi Beach in Portofino, Italy.

Walk along it until you reach the real jewel of Portofino; Paraggi Beach . The bright blue-green waters of this lush, little cove are something like a dream. You can pay to rent a beach chair, or post up for free along the pebbles or flat rocks along the side. If you fancy some water activities, you can rent kayaks and stand-up paddle boards from Outdoor Kayak , located on Baia di Niasca beach (which you pass when walking from town to Paraggi).

TOP THINGS TO DO IN SANTA MARGHERITA

Sunset over Santa Margherita, Italy.

After you’ve had enough fun in the sun, head back to the road and locate the bus stop nearest this beach (I’ve provided a map below). Ride the bus back to Santa Margherita , where you can relax for the rest of the day.

For most tourists, this lovely sea-side town is nothing more than the closest train station to Portofino. But I highly recommend giving Santa Margherita some time, especially if you like less-touristy places . While Portofino felt entirely catered to wealthy, older, foreign tourists, Santa Margherita felt like a real place of residence. I noticed locals out and about; older men playing water polo in the sea; young girls taking turns riding a hover board around the park, elderly couples relaxing on park benches …

The best way to explore such a place is by simply wandering around. As far as “attractions” go, simply be sure to stop by Villa Durazzo (now a free-entry public park with sea views) at some point during your wandering.

Have an Affordable Dinner

Margherita cheese pizza in Santa Margherita, Italy.

As you can imagine, the food in Santa Margherita is much more reasonably-priced than that in nearby Portofino. So find a place that catches your eye, and wind down before catching the train back to Genoa. Alternatively, get some pizza to go from one of the pizzerias lining the main street area.

Piazza Martiri della Liberta

View of Piazza Martiri della Libertà in Santa Margherita with colorful buildings behind and water in front.

Take it across the street to the park in Piazza Martiri della Libertà . Not only is this the budget friendly option, but it also affords you a front-row seat to the Ligurian sea during sunset.

WHERE TO STAY IN GENOA

With just two days in Genoa, I recommend choosing accommodation close to both the train station and the historical center. For those of you traveling on a budget (like I always do!), I can recommend this hostel , where I stayed for five nights during my own visit to Genoa. It is a five-minute walk from the main train station, was clean, and the staff gave some great day trip suggestions. It’s a social hostel in that there are organized events every night, but it is still calm enough [that a grandma like me had no problems]. It’s not the cheapest hostel (I paid high-30-somethings USD a night), but it’s not the most expensive either, and there aren’t many hostels in the city. Breakfast is advertised as included, but it’s so minuscule that I made a routine of getting coffee and a pastry for €2.60 right down the street.

While in Genoa, I met other travelers who stayed at this hostel , located in the historical center, and they seem satisfied with it.

This Laid-back Coastal Italian Town Has the Charm of Portofino Without the Crowds

Santa Margherita Ligure is the perfect introduction to Italy’s seaside Liguria region.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

An upscale oasis for celebrities and jet setters, Portofino stands out among the many desirable places to visit on the Italian Riviera. Golfo Paradiso, a tiny stretch of Ligurian coastline in northern Italy, is home to a few less famous and equally character-rich gems. Italians and in-the-know international travelers have been quietly flocking to the nearby town of Santa Margherita Ligure for decades to enjoy the sun-splashed Mediterranean ambience — and all the delicious food, beautiful beaches, and warm hospitality that a vacation here entails — without any fuss and fanfare.

katatonia82/Getty Images

The former fishing village wins hearts today with its enchanting architecture, beaches, shopping, and dining. Santa Margherita Ligure also provides proximity to the city of Genoa, a port, and a train station, so it’s a great home base for exploring the rest of the relaxed region as well as popular Cinque Terre.

Getting There

Naeblys/Getty Images

Santa Margherita Ligure is located about 22 miles southeast of Genoa. Depending on where you’re coming from, it might make sense to fly into Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport and then take a taxi or bus. You can also hop on a direct train from major Italian cities such as Rome, Florence, and Naples to Genova Piazza Principe and then transfer to the regional service right to Santa Margherita Ligure station.

Best Time to Visit

Chiara Salvadori/Getty Images

The Italian Riviera comes alive in the summer with locals and tourists sunning on the sand, frolicking in the warm water, and dining alfresco. It’s also the time of year when ferries frequently run between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, as well as the lesser-known villages of Camogli and San Fruttuoso. For these reasons, it’s both the busiest and most expensive period in Liguria. If you’d rather save a few bucks and deal with fewer people, consider visiting in the late spring or early fall when the weather is still pleasant, but peak-season vacationers have departed.

Best Things to Do

PavloBaliukh/Getty Images

Santa Margherita Ligure dates back to the Roman era. It was in the latter half of the 1800s that nobility from across Europe discovered its potential as a holiday haven. Tourism really took off in the mid-20th century. Today, Santa Margherita Ligure gives visitors a tantalizing cross-section of what makes Liguria so wonderful.

A vibrant seaside resort, it brims with heritage, culture, and incredible scenery. Unique for the region, Santa Margherita Ligure delivers sandy stretches to spread out a towel. Visitors will find a handful of beach clubs like Bagni Vicini steps from the ocean. The endlessly picturesque Chiesa di Santa Margherita towers over the plaza where daily markets are held.

History buffs also won’t want to miss Villa Durazzo, a sprawling property with manicured gardens, cobblestone pathways, and a 17th-century mansion-turned-museum. Not far away, sits the church of San Giacomo di Corte. It’s worth taking a tour of Cervara Abbey and checking out Santa Margherita Ligure Castle, too.

Among the biggest selling points of staying in Santa Margherita Ligure is easy access to the beaches of Paraggi and Portofino for shopping, dining, and a generally glamorous atmosphere. It’s also convenient to take a boat to Camogli and San Fruttuoso, or do a day trip to Cinque Terre.

Best Places to Stay

Courtesy of Grand Hotel Miramare

Santa Margherita Ligure doesn’t have a ton of hotels, though it’s larger and thus better equipped to host visitors than some of the smaller neighboring villages. One of the grandest respites in the area, the art nouveau Grand Hotel Miramare has elegant rooms and resort-style amenities like a curved seawater pool, refined restaurant, spa, and beach club.

The classical yellow facade reflects the cheerful yet heritage-rich demeanor of Hotel Sant'Andrea , a restored villa with airy rooms punctuated by four-poster beds and a relaxing garden patio.

On the more modern side of things, Blu di Te House offers individually designed rooms, a hidden spa sanctuary, and a rooftop terrace with a pool that gazes over the shimmering Gulf of Tigullio.

Best Places to Eat and Drink

Simona Balconi/Getty Images

Liguria boasts many culinary accolades. It’s fabled as the birthplace of pesto and bakes up some of the best focaccia in Italy. Santa Margherita Ligure is a fantastic place to sample the local flavors of the region.

There are many top-notch restaurants — notably Trattoria da Pezzi and Angolo 48 — that serve traditional Ligurian dishes at reasonable prices. More popular picks include Ristorante Antonio, DuCoq , and Pizzeria Il Delfino. Meanwhile, Zi' Ninella Ristorante reigns supreme for elevated, prix-fixe meals. More casual alfresco eateries dot the boulevard across from the sea. And if you venture in a few blocks, bistros and aperitivo bars spill onto cobblestone alleyways.

Panoramic view of the Portofino coast with colorful buildings and sailboats in the water

The charming fishing village of Portofino is one of Italy’s most alluring resort destinations. Portofino is located along the Italian Riviera just north of the Cinque Terre . This beautiful town features a small harbor lined with colorful homes, designer stores and chic bistros along the boardwalk. It’s a tiny place, home to only 400 residents year-round and a handful of yachts. But it’s a gem that is absolutely worth a visit and makes for a perfect 2-night getaway.

Depending on your budget, you can stay in Portofino or Santa Margherita Ligure which is a great base for exploring the area.

What to See in Portofino

There’s not much to do in Portofino but wander and enjoy the beautiful setting of the town. Take a stroll along the harbor before making your way up past the church of San Giorgio to Castello Brown, a 15th-century castle overlooking the harbor. It’s worth the €5 entry ticket to enjoy the gardens and the highest viewpoint of Portofino Bay. If you’re in the mood for a longer walk, you can continue the trail to reach the Portofino Lighthouse and La Portofinese . This eco-farm produces local products (like craft beer, wine, and organic honey). It also arranges guided tours, picnics, and wellness experiences on the promontory.

For a decadent lunch with mesmerizing views of Portofino’s bustling square, book a table at DaV Mare – Trattoria di Pesce . Part of the Belmond Splendido Mare hotel, it’s a chic spot that serves excellent traditional dishes made with carefully-sourced, seasonal ingredients. Shellfish is the star of the show, but you’ll also find beef tartare, lamb chops and creative vegetable sides. The trofie with homemade pesto are tossed freshly at your table (and if you’re lucky, you’ll be served the entire pan to scoop every last noodle). The wine list has an ample selection of Ligurian labels, including heroic wines from the Cinque Terre, while the cocktails focus on artisan liquers distilled by family-run producers.

Tucked behind the piazzetta, Gepi is a quaint cafe-gelateria set in a pretty corner of town. Enophiles shouldn’t miss pulling up a seat at Winterose Wine Bar : this little enoteca is perfect for a glass of wine and a bite to eat at lunch or pre-dinner aperitivo. There are only 5 tables outside so call to book ahead. Across the harbor, Ristorante Lo Stello serves excellent fish dishes with scenic views of the water. And Trattoria Tripoli in the main piazza complements al fresco dining with classic cooking (including a delicious pesto lasagna).

How to get to Portofino

The closest train station is Santa Margherita Ligure, which is a great base for exploring the area. From here you can catch a bus, hop on a 15-minute ferry or come on foot. The 5km coastal trail is a beautiful walk that takes you past hidden coves, beach clubs, and seaside villas. Portofino is a pedestrian town but if you arrive by car , there is a parking lot off the main road.

Where to Stay in Portofino

If you can afford to splurge, there is no better place to stay in than the Belmond Hotel Splendido . Originally a 16th-century Benedictine Monastery, the hotel has been welcoming a VIP clientele since 1901. It is thereby considered to be one of Italy’s most iconic properties. Even if you don’t stay overnight, it’s worth a visit for a panoramic lunch.

A pool with sun loungers on a balcony overlooking a scenic bay

What to See in San Fruttuoso

You can’t miss a visit to the Abbey of San Fruttuoso while you’re in the area. The 13th-century Benedictine Monastery is set within a scenic bay that overlooks a pebbled beach. It’s a perfect escape for some sunshine and lunch. You can only reach via boat or on foot (the hike is 2 hours so I’d recommend the boat!). There are multiple destinations where you can hop on a ferry , including Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino.

During the summer, you can rent sun loungers from the Bagni San Fruttuoso or lay out on the free beach area. The cove is tiny so make sure to show up early to snag a spot. And as usual, visiting during the shoulder season is ideal! I visited on a warm day in April and the setting was pristine. For lunch, book a table at Da Giorgio , a little restaurant set above the sea directly across from the ferry dock. Eating trofie al pesto while gazing at the shimmering sea is certain to be one of the highlights of your trip.

What to do in Paraggi

Set between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, Paraggi is a sleepy beach cove with a sandy beach. It’s low-key and elegant, with a couple of beach clubs and a crystalline sea. Langosteria Paraggi is a gorgeous eatery overlooking the sea. It’s open from morning to night, and they have a beach menu if you want to order directly from your lounger.

Where to Stay in Paraggi

Situated right in Paraggi’s exclusive little cove, the Eight Hotel Paraggi is an idyllic escape. The best part? It’s just a short stroll to Portofino.

What to do in Santa Margherita Ligure

And last but not least, Santa Margherita Ligure. It may not have the name recognition of Portofino but it’s a chic port town and arguably the best place to stay in the area for the breadth of accommodations, shopping and dining options. From here, it’s easy to move along the coast: catch a train to Chiavari for easy transfers to the Cinque Terre and Rome, or hop on a train to Camogli to explore another beautiful seaside destination.

Where to Eat in Santa Margherita Ligure

The best bakery in town is Fior di Ponti which serves up freshly baked bread, cakes, and Liguria’s famous focaccia. Order whatever flavor comes out of the oven because focaccia is best eaten when it’s warm and soft. It’s truly heavenly! For aperitivo, I loved Vineria Macchiavello , an old-school enoteca & bistro located along the main street. There are a few tables outside and you can enjoy abundant finger food to accompany your wine for under €10/person. Vernissage , a small cocktail lounge set on an incline beneath a stone castle, has friendly service with panoramic views of the port.

For lunch or dinner, Reve Cafe is a cozy and romantic little bistro that serves local (and some international) dishes. Angolo 48 is another lovely place that serves contemporary, Ligurian cuisine while Ristorante Beppe Achilli has a great location along the waterfront.

Where to Stay in Santa Margherita Ligure

The Grand Hotel Miramare is a beautiful hotel with a panoramic pool and gardens. Villa Gelsomino Seaside Luxury House is set within a 19th-century palazzo with a gorgeous terrace. If you prefer curated, boho accommodations, try BluDiTe .

travel from santa margherita to portofino

Path on foot from Santa Margherita to Portofino, an itinerary that allows you to have wonderful views of the sea on the journey that connects these two picturesque coastal towns in Liguria.

Portofino, a town in Liguria known all over the world for its beauty, can be reached with a walking itinerary starting from Santa Margherita Ligure, located in the innermost part of the Gulf of Tigullio, on the eastern Ligurian Riviera, between the promontory of Portofino and the locality of San Michele di Pagana, about 2 kilometers from Rapallo.

From Santa Margherita Ligure to Portofino there are about 5 kilometers to travel partly on the promenade and partly following a pedestrian path that winds just above the road that runs along the coast.

Proceeding from Santa Margherita towards Portofino, you will find the marina, the equipped beaches, the splendid panoramic views that distinguish this stretch of coast, and the luxurious villas with terraced gardens.

Near the sign that on the right indicates the abbey of Cervara, a monastic complex overlooking the sea, a pedestrian walkway over the sea begins that leads to the village of Paraggi and its enchanting bay, and then returns to the carriage road.

At this point, on the side of the town of Paraggi, the pedestrian begins that leads up to Portofino, a beautiful path in the woods, characterized by the Mediterranean scrub, whose journey time is approximately 15/20 minutes.

The path leads to the final stretch that leads to the parish church of the enchanting village of Portofino.

What and Where to Eat

Restaurants in portofino, portofino in one day, castello brown, the lighthouse, after sunset in portofino: things to do in the evening, things to see in outside of portofino, hungry for more italian adventures.

Portofino may be a tiny speck on the Ligurian Riviera, but it's crammed with stuff to do. If you've only got a day or a weekend, good luck picking from the endless activities in this slice of heaven . Really, it's like stepping into paradise. Visit once, and it sticks with you. This village glimmers, nestled against the promontory, where the sea's rhythm and the fishermen's lively hustle whisk you into a dream world you'd never want to leave.

🇮🇹 All You Need for Italy 🇮🇹

At Savoring Italy , I've handpicked a selection of vital services for your Italian trip. This list, featuring accommodations to local transport, includes trusted businesses I've personally vetted for a hassle-free and delightful experience.

Liguria's Riviera di Levante , home to Portofino, is dotted by a string of increasingly picturesque towns, including Camogli , Santa Margherita , and Sestri Levante . There are a few ways to get to the settlement, but a train is not an option.

Driving to Portofino : After passing Santa Margherita Ligure, go along the coast road, according to the signage. In Portofino, parking is a common issue. While there is a rather pricey covered parking lot in Piazza Martiri della Libertà , it is often filled during peak hours, making it difficult to locate free parking.

Bus travel to Portofino: If you're feeling very adventurous, you can go to Santa Margherita by car or bus. During the summer, a bus departs from the station every 20 minutes, and the two destinations are rather near.

Go to Portofino by water : another option is to board a boat that departs from Santa Margherita, Camogli, or Genoa; for details, check out this link .

Portofino is the starting point for great boat trips. Of them, the one at the San Fruttuoso Abbey , which is situated in a narrow cove in Portofino Park , is impossible to miss. Once you pass Punta Chiappa, you can see this historic Benedictine abbey with its modest pebble beach in the distance from the sea. In slate and marble, the style is pure Ligurian. You can see the abbey, the museum, the cloister, and the Doria tower. The Christ of the Abyss bronze figure is located in front of the monastery at the bottom of the sea. However, it requires diving to a depth of 15 meters to be seen. The adjacent Camogli station is also highly recommended if you choose to extend your stay.

Naturally, the water is one of Portofino's primary draws; it's amazing here, as it is across the Riviera. Even if there are just a few tiny beaches with sand and stones, they are nonetheless worthwhile to explore.

You should definitely check out Niasca Beach , which is located within the Bay of Paraggi . You can take a bus, bike, or scooter here. As an alternative, you can enjoy a view of the castle from Cannon Beach. Here, you descend a short flight of steps.

Highlights of Portofino's center to visit in a single day

There are plenty of things to visit in this little seaside town, even if you just have one day. Unquestionably, Portofino's quaint Piazzetta is the first feature that draws in tourists. A distinct ambiance of refinement and simplicity coexists in this charming coastal plaza, which is bordered by brightly colored homes and opulent shops.

You can discover the Castello Brown or "Brown Castle", a fortification with an amazing panoramic view of the hamlet and the sea, by continuing towards the beach. You will experience a trip back in time and take in one of the most breathtaking vistas of the Ligurian Riviera at this historic location, which got its name from one of its former owners.

At the time of this writing, the price of admission to Castello Brown in Portofino , if you were wondering, per individual, is 5 euros to enter the expansive terrace with views of the gulf.

San Giorgio Church , another significant monument in Portofino, is located not far from the castle. See centuries-old artwork and take in the breath-taking vista of the coast from this peaceful church perched on a peninsula overlooking the sea .

It's a great idea to set aside a few hours to dine at one of the numerous local eateries. The star of the village's restaurant menus is without a doubt fresh fish , but there are also plenty of options based on seasonal food.

Apart from the Michelin-starred eateries serving sophisticated and inventive cuisine, Portofino has a lot of trattorias and taverns serving less fancy but nevertheless delicious food. Pasta with pesto, focaccia, and Ligurian rabbit, among other well made meals following tradition, are all available for tasting here.

Remember to have a decent glass of local wine with your meals. Although Liguria is best known for its white wines, which go well with seafood, they also have great red wines.

There are a lot of restaurants in Portofino, some of which are more touristic than others. I'll give you a list of some of the places I've been to below:

U Batt i is a restaurant located in a charming lane a little distance from the plaza that is most known for its scampi, which are prepared using an old technique and are so good with a lemon curry sauce that it is hard to explain; other fish dishes are also delicious.

Check out Tripoli , a classic Piazzetta restaurant with traditional food and prompt, attentive service.

Finally, the famed restaurant Langosteria is situated on the seashore within Bagni Fiore in the magnificent setting of Paraggi. It is the Ligurian version of the well-known Milanese restaurant, and it has a sophisticated ambiance.

Paraggi Bay

The Bay of Paraggi is a tiny bay that appears blue-green in color owing to reflections from the surrounding park. It is seen from the road that leads from Santa Margherita to Portofino just before you get there. Not much more to see other than the bay (but what a view!!), a few tiny eateries, and a famous location called Carillon . This is an absolutely charming spot, particularly the seafront road with breathtaking views, which includes a little castle perched atop a point.

La Piazzetta

The small square has always been the symbol of Portofino, where there are many iconic colorful houses that narrowly overlook the port and the many fashionable shops. Here you can actually see celebrities, socialites, admire grandiose boats, observe or even buy very glamorous items in the splendid boutiques. Over time, the square has been the set of several films, the center of nightlife and a meeting place for famous people and is still today a major attraction for international tourism.

The Portofino Village

The lovely community is ensconced in the greenery of the regional park that bears its name The hamlet is tiny, and you can see everything in an instant, but don't restrict yourself to the area facing the sea; follow some side streets and you'll find wonderful nooks.

travel from santa margherita to portofino

The impressive area is dominated by an old castle called Castello Brown, which is about a ten-minute stroll away. A flower-filled Mediterranean garden envelops the castle. Though the vista is stunning, the interiors will wow you with their abundance of furniture and bas-reliefs. The Doges of the Maritime Republic of Genoa and Napoleon were among the many historical vicissitudes of the fortress. It was bought by Montague Brown when Italy was unified, and he refurbished it.

You can enjoy a lovely stroll that offers stunning views of the sea as you ascend towards the church of San Giorgi o from the little plaza. You follow the Brown castle till you get to a magnificent terrace with a view of the ocean. Ideal for sipping on a drink or an aperitif, this is a place I heartily suggest visiting.

travel from santa margherita to portofino

This city comes alive every day of the week throughout the summer. Actually, you can always count on seeing people strolling along the street or making stops at one of the many eateries and pubs. Still, the nightlife is always sophisticated yet understated.

Undoubtedly, if you time it right, among the best activities in the area are the pubs and clubs that host events, sometimes including DJ sets or live music. Additionally, you can pause on one of the expansive terraces at sunset for an incredible vista and a one-a-lifetime setting to behold.

travel from santa margherita to portofino

Undoubtedly, Portofino's location is another benefit. In actuality, it is close to a few historically and naturally significant communities. Among them are Santa Margherita Ligure, which is located around 5 kilometers distant, Rapallo, and Camogli.

Moreover, the Abbey of San Fruttuoso , which dates to about the tenth and eleventh centuries, is located near the extremity of the promontory. You can also take one of the many nature paths that wind up amongst the rocks to explore the region , or you can schedule a boat excursion to see this amazing section of the coast.

Weather very disappointing this week, very grey so trying to find other things to do. Has anyone walked to Portofino. Distance not an issue for us but just wondering if safe to do so. Thank you.

This previous thread might be useful - it’s old but probably still relevant..

The older thread linked above is still relevant.

The easiest alternative is to walk on the sidewalk along the road as far as the hamlet of Paraggi, hence take the pretty obvious trail that runs parallel to the road along the hillside. A pleasant walk overall.

It's a beautiful walk, completely safe.

Thankyou. We ended up getting the 782 bus from station. We are staying at the Metropole so easy walk to station. I downloaded app and paid on the bus. We had lost 10 euros on Wednesday when we bought tickets down in town and no buses came. Gave up waiting after 45 minutes. Much easier from station. Actually lovely trip. Paraggi looked stunning and had lunch booked for Wednesday which we also missed which was a shame. Will go next time.

I’m pretty sure you could have used the tickets you bought on Wednesday when you took the bus from the station..

Bus tickets are only valid when activated immediately before the journey, stamped in the validation machine on board - unless this bus is an exception?

It’s a long walk from Reigate. If you’re starting anywhere closer, do let us know?

Yes lesson learnt, don’t validate ticket till on bus. The guy in ticket office told us to validate them outside. Sadly when bus didn’t turn up the ticket office had then closed but would have asked for new tickets if it hadn’t been. No one actually checked our tickets on either journey when we got the bus the next day but would not have taken a chance.

Ian B, don’t quite understand your comment! We were in SML.
