Where do the ferries depart from.

The ferries from Koh Samui to Koh Tao depart daily from 3 different locations in Koh Samui:

Maenam Pier

Nathon Pier

Bangrak Pier

These are located around different points of the island so I recommend booking your inbound/outbound journey from the one that is easiest for you to reach.

Maenam Pier is located on the north coast in Maenam, this pier is one of the closest to Koh Phangan giving you shorter travelling times.

Nathon Pier is located on the west coast and is the main way ferries will usually arrive from the mainland, so if you have travelled from Surat Thani you probably will arrive from here.

Bangrak Pier is the least used of the 3 piers, here you can find 1 daily departure to Koh Tao, however, it is more commonly used for speedboats to get across to the neighbouring Koh Phangan.

Getting to Your Accommodation in Koh Tao

Once you arrive in Koh Tao this small little port can be madness!

Some of the accommodations here offer a free or paid shuttle service to and from the port on your arrival or departure.

If your accommodation does offer this service then when you arrive head left and try to find your accommodation on the board of one of the many hotel staff waiting for you.

On arrival they will check you off their list and you may have to wait a while for some other guests before leaving.

If you need to arrange a taxi yourself then just head out left but keep going straight to the main road then go left towards the 7-Eleven, here you can find a taxi service offering transportation all around the island.

Alternatively, if your accommodation is next to the pier or close to Mae Head you will be able to walk here just be prepared for a rather sweaty journey!

Best time to Visit Koh Tao

Koh Tao has  4 main seasons, they are cool and dry, hot and dry, hot and wet and monsoon season.

The best time to visit and the most popular on the island is generally the hot and dry season which tends to run from January to May. The island can get very busy during this time and due to its small size accommodation can easily all get booked up so make sure to book in advance if you can.

However, if you are mainly visiting the island to dive visibility under the ocean surface can reach up to 30 meters in July, August and September –  although this is the wet season.

How to Get From Koh Samui to Koh Tao | Ferry or Catamaran

The Koh Samui to Koh to Koh ferry pier. A wooden pier with boats near it

Want to know your options for the Koh Samui to Koh Tao Ferry?

Koh Tao is an island paradise that sits in the Gulf coast of Southern Thailand. It is the smallest out of the trio islands that form the Chumphon archipelago including Koh Phangan and further down is Koh Samui.

Getting to Koh Tao from Koh Samui by ferry is pretty straightforward. There’s various boat options including speedboats, catamarans and slower ferries doing this journey every day and helping tourists and travelers island hop these famous island in Thailand. If you have fixed travel dates and want to travel at a specific date and time, it is best to book ferry seats in advance. You can → compare options and book seats here.

A pier in Koh Samui where boats go to Koh Tao

Koh Samui – Koh Tao Ferry

In this blog post I will explain everything you need to know about the Koh Samui to Koh Tao ferry.

Currently there’s 7 ferries departing every day from Koh Samui to Koh Tao. The earliest boat departs from Maenam pier at 8:00am and has a scheduled travel time of 90 minutes. And the latest departure is at 4:00pm from Na-Thon pier in west Koh Samui.

If you book online there is also combo ticket options. These tickets include a transfer from your hotel in Koh Samui to one of the piers before boarding the ferry to Koh Tao. Finally the ferry or catamaran will dock in Maehaad which is the main town on the island and close to → Sairee beach which is where most tourists stay because there is a large concentration of restaurants, beach bars and entertainment.

There are also boats departing from Bangrak pier in north Koh Samui. While taking a boat from one of the piers in Bangrak may a be convenient if you’re staying in the area, I would avoid it. These boats only go to Koh Phangan where you’ll need to disembark and wait for an 1 hour for the next boat to Koh Tao. Not that convenient.

→ ferry tickets cost around $20 and you can view all options here

Important: there are also ferries to Koh Tao from Bangrak pier in Koh Samui. However this option isn’t direct. Instead the ferry goes to Koh Phangan where you need to disembark and wait for 1 hour for the ferry to Koh Tao.

The catamaran from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

How to book Koh Samui to Koh Tao ferry tickets

Booking your ferry tickets from Koh Samui to Koh Tao can easily → be done online. This way you can view all available departures and compare prices without having to go to the ports/piers personally. Also, if you’re planning your island hopping days and have a fixed itinerary, online booking is highly recommended.

Online prices are the same as booking in person. And in some cases, such as Koh Samui to Koh Phangan, the ferry tickets are ฿50 ($1.50) cheaper online.

You can also just show up at the pier on your day of travel and book any available seats. However, if you choose this option I suggest being at the pier at the latest 3 or 4 hours before departure in order to find available seats.

About the journey

After booking your tickets the process is similar to that of air travel. On your day of travel you need to be at the pier/port at the latest 30 minutes before the scheduled departure and do a check-in process. You’ll get tickets and stickers that go on your shirt to indicate the boat and destination.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao check in process before departure

I would suggest being at the pier/port about 1 hour or 90 minutes ahead of departure. This way you can make sure you have everything in order and avoid having to wait in a long check-in queue.

The ferries and catamarans have outdoor seating and air condition seating inside. If you want to find the best seats, make sure to be among the first to board as seats are not assigned. → view all departures and prices

Luggage allowance

Each passenger gets 20kg baggage allowance. This allowance is for 1 carry on and 1 big backpack or suitcase. Excess luggage will be charged at ฿20 ($0.60) per kg, not exceeding 30 kg. This allowance doesn’t seem to be strictly enforced unless you have an unreasonable amount of luggage.

About the boats

All Koh Samui to Koh Tao ferries and catamarans are big and spacious with comfortable seating both inside and out. These bigger boats also have a toilet on board, smoking area and even a canteen selling soft drinks and snacks.

Inside the Ko Samui to Ko Tao ferry with comfortable seats

The seats on the speedboats are cushioned benches stacked one after another on either side of the boat. Supposedly each bench is intended for 2 persons but often the boat is packed and each bench must hold 3 people. We have only used the speedboat to get from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan which is just a 30 minute journey. I don’t think I would want to do the journey from Koh Samui to Koh Tao by speedboat though.

Combo tickets

Combo tickets is an all-inclusive option where you purchase a boat ticket that also includes a transfer to pier or port where you’ll board the boat to Koh Tao. If you’re not staying close to the port where you’re departing from, these tickets can be a cost effective way of getting there as taxis in Koh Samui are notoriously expensive and never use the meter.

The transfer to the port is by minivan which goes round picking up other guests from their hotel. Pick up will be about 2 hours prior to the scheduled boat departure. → view all departures and prices

Where to stay in Koh Tao

All areas are well suited if you want to have restaurants, beach bars and entertainment nearby. The table gives you a quick overview of hotels and hostels which have been highly rated and thus are always in high demand.

But first ⤵

Maehaad pier in Koh Tao

Maehaad is the main town and capital city of Koh Tao. The main ferry pier is here and there’s a number of restaurants, cheap eateries, budget stays and a number of scooter rental stores to choose from. While you’ll find all western amenities, Maehaad it isn’t touristy.

Best place to stay for any Budget in Maehaad ⤵

Sairee beach is of the most popular areas for tourists to stay in Koh Tao. This image shows a famous bent palm tree on the beach

Sairee Beach

Probably 90% of tourists that come to Koh Tao stay in Sairee Beach. It’s the largest beach on Koh Tao and is lined with waving palms and trees and a promenade dotted with restaurants, dive shops, beach lounges and various accommodation options.

Best place to stay for any Budget in Sairee Beach ⤵

Chalok Baan Kao Bay

Chalok Baan is just 10 minutes drive from busier Sairee beach. There’s a few accommodation and places to eat. It’s a laid back atmosphere where you can really enjoy the slow going island life of Koh Tao. This is also a great place to go snorkeling and is close to shark bay, famous for black tip reef sharks.

Best place to stay for any Budget in Chalok Baan ⤵

When you arrive in Koh Tao

The ferry to Koh Tao docks at Mae Haad pier. It’s busy, chaotic and stressful as you you’ll get loads of drivers asking you where you’re going. If you accept anything just make sure to negotiate a reasonable price.

Getting to your hotel

When you arrive in Koh Tao you have a few options to make it to your hotel. If you’ve already booked an accommodation in Koh Tao, make sure to ask if they offer shuttle service. Some accommodation offer this service to their guests and if its an exclusive resort it will probably be free.

Another option which mostly applies if you have a backpack is to rent a scooter or motorcycle. There’s lots of shops to rent from in Maehaad, just make sure to check their reviews beforehand. Or in some cases you can even walk to your hotel or hostel as both Maehaad town and Sairee beach are within walking distance. Maybe not so much if you have a lot of luggage though.

The final option would be to travel by songtaew which is basically a pick-up truck with benches in the back. Let the driver know where you’re going and in some cases the driver make group others going in the same direction and you can split the cost. But in most you’ll need to negotiate a price.

If you arrive hungry, stop for a sandwich at Da’s sandwiches right next to the pier. This guy makes the best sandwiches in Thailand (according to us) .

Scooter Rental

To rent a scooter go to One Motorbike Rentals .The shop is a 2 minute walk South from the pier. If they don’t have any scooters the next best option is go to Oli’s Motorbike rental about 10 minutes from the pier.

The only way to do certain activities must be done by tour. One of them is this 7 hour tour that takes you snorkeling, and then to a viewpoint on a nearby island and also includes lunch.

How to go from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

travel koh samui to koh tao

Turtle island, named after the sea turtles that swim through the crystal-clear Thai Gulf all around it, Koh Tao is a laid-back alternative to chic Samui and hedonistic Phangan. It’s sat some 41 miles to the north of its Chumphon Archipelago compadres, mimicking a desert island with its coconut-strewn beachfronts and hidden coves, not to mention some of the best diving this side of the country. Boats are the obvious choice for getting between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, with a few options varying in travel time, cost, and company on the menu.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by catamaran

Time – 1.5 hours (boat crossing only) Price – $18 Comfort – 5/5

The Lomprayah ferry from Koh Samui

Swap Samui’s spas and sprawling hotels for the rustic vibes and bamboo beach bars of Koh Tao in under two hours – that’s what’s possible with the super-fast ferry service. It’s operated by the Lomprayah ferry company, which is one of the top-rated ferry companies in the whole region. They offer the most modern boats, efficient ticketing (book ferry tickets online via 12Go.asia ), and packages that include a transfer from the lobby of your hotel to the boat.

The fastest and most modern boats are the high speed ferries offered by the Lomprayah ferry company.

Lomprayah ferry schedule, departure point Nathon Pier

Because these are usually the most popular choice among backpackers and island hoppers crossing the Thai Gulf, there are a number of services daily. High-season months see Lomprayah’s boats leaving at 8am from the Pralan Pier near the hotel strips of Maenam, with extra departures at 12.30pm. You can also catch the Lomprayah ferries at the departure time 11.15am and 5.30pm (the last service of the day) from the Nathon Pier on the far western coast of Koh Samui.

Lomprayah Catamaran seating options

The boats themselves are among the best in the whole fleet going between Koh Samui and Koh Tao. They have indoor seating that benefits from air conditioning, an onboard shop for refreshments and drinks, and two large deck areas where you can watch other tropical islands shoot by as you sail. Available at a first come first serve basis, for 100 THB extra you can get access to the VIP area upstairs with more luxury seats and for 200 THB you can access the exclusive lounge where you can make the trip sitting in leather seats.

Ferry Port: Mae Haad Pier , Koh Tao Island

Like most ferry services, the Lomprayah option reach Koh Tao at the ferry port Mae Haad pier. From there, it should be a cinch to find a taxi to your destination on the island, or just choose a travel option that includes transfers.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by high-speed ferry

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by high-speed ferry

Time – 2 to 2.5 hours Price – $18 Comfort – 4/5

Koh Samui to Koh Tao can be done in a single morning if you opt for the high-speed ferry. Despite the name, however, these rides aren’t quite as fast as their Catamaran counterparts. Still, they will whisk you off one island and drop you on another in the time it takes to finish a mango sticky rice and enjoy the view of the Thai Gulf rolling by off starboard side.

Relaxing ferries from Koh Samui to Koh Tao

Slowing the journey just a tad is also a good option for passengers not too used to sea travel. These larger, slightly more tardy boats don’t tend to sway and lurch as much as the Catamarans when in the water. They’re better for fending off sea sickness. And they’re a dash more relaxing – great news when it’s the beaches of Koh Phangan and the jungle-clad peaks of the Mu Koh Angthong National Marine Park drifting by on the horizon.

High-speed ferries cost only a smidgen less than the Catamaran but make for a more relaxing ride.

Choice of Ferry operators to Koh Tao

Two main companies run connections on the high-speed ferry route. First, there’s Seatran Discovery. They have the most modern vessels, with padded inside seating and big decks. They also tend to be the pricier option, but that’s down to slightly shorter travel times, along with a sought-after departure point at Bangrak Pier on the north corner of Samui. Secondly, you’ve got Songserm. They go from Nathon Pier in the west and take just a little longer to pull up at Mae Haad Pier in Koh Tao.

Booking online

In total, there are about three services on the high-speed ferry between the two gulf islands each day. They book up fast in the high-season months between November and March, so it’s always wise to book your tickets online using 12Go long before you jet off for the coral reefs and dive sites.

Koh Tao from Koh Samui via Koh Phangan

Thailand’s palm-fringed isles captured your imagination? Eager to explore all the paradisiacal corners the gulf has to offer? Why not put together your very own island-hopping itinerary. It’s possible because loads of normal ferries link Koh Samui island with Koh Phangan , with onward connections from there to the scuba diving mecca of Koh Tao.

Stop on nearby island Koh Phangan

You can keep costs low and enjoy the journey to the full on the slow-paced boats run by Raja Ferry. They leave from Lipa Noi ferry pier on the south-western edge of the island, pulling into Thon Sala in Phangan a couple of hours later. You’ll need to decide if you’ll be staying a night in the home of the Full Moon Party (recommended – those shindigs are awesome!) or just the day. Both are possibilities, because the last departure to Koh Tao is at 5pm with Seatran Discovery.

Adding extra trips en route to Koh Tao

Of course, going for an island hop means adding in a transfer, spending all day traveling, and dragging your luggage around with you. It’s not ideal, but does give you a chance to set foot on another of the legendary vacay destinations of the Land of Smiles. You can simplify things a little by using 12Go.asia to book and manage all the individual legs of your trip.

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by private speedboat

Koh Samui to Koh Tao by private speedboat charter

Time – 1.5 hours+, depending on the stops you make Price – $1000+ Comfort – 5/5

Get from Koh Samui to Koh Tao traveling by Private boat

Calling all A-listers and jet setters, private charter speedboats are your chance to travel between Koh Samui and Koh Tao in real style. As the name implies, they are reserved for you and only you. That means the rather astronomical price can be divided up between all members of your party (it’s usually based on at least four passengers, with surcharges for any extras).

Can include trips to nearby islands

Bonuses include a beach pickup right by your hotel anywhere on the island – no need for morning taxi transfers here. You can also tailor-make an itinerary for the day. Yep, this isn’t just about getting from A to B, because the price usually includes stops at the Instagram-worthy Nang Yuan Island and snorkeling hotspots in Mango Bay. It promises to be a real adventure on the Thai Gulf, albeit one you’ll need to fork out for!

Whatever way you choose to go between Koh Samui and Koh Tao, you can look forward to setting foot on one of the Thai Gulf’s more authentic isles. It’s famed for its diving scene, but after encountering reef sharks and brain corals, you can also get stuck into lush forests, hiking paths, and a buzzing nightlife scene. Bon voyage!

Koh Samui to Koh Tao FAQ

The ferries between Koh Samui and Koh Tao offered by Songserm is usually the most affordable option on the menu. That’s because it’s the slower of the two fast boats, with journey times in the region of 2.5 hours to get you to the turtle island. You can easily compare and contrast the tickets of all the popular routes mentioned in this guide over on 12Go.asia .

If you simply cannot wait to get those dive tanks on your back and start enjoying the coral gardens and cliff-backed beaches of Koh Tao, look for the Lomprayah ferry. They offer the quickest route from Koh Samui to Koh Tao, taking a mere 1.5 hours in total on the water. Of course, you will need to factor in a little extra time to get to and from your hotel and the pier, but Tao’s small size means that rarely takes ages on the far side.

Going full throttle in a private speedboat with no pitstops for snorkeling along the way, you could do the trip in around an hour or so. However, most passengers will be on commercial ferries, the fastest of the ferry operators are Lomprayah. They complete the journey in 1.5 hours and tickets can be booked in advance online via 12Go.asia .

By boat – there’s 41 miles of sparkling sea to cross before you can start exploring those resplendent coral reefs! The only thing you need to decide is what particular ferry you’ll go for. Check out 12Go.asia to see the list of ferry tickets with a variety of different ferry companies.

Koh Tao has been a magnet for scuba divers since anyone can remember. Coral reefs, blue sinkholes, shipwrecks, and shark-infested coves all see to that. However, underwater is just part of the pull. There are also gold-tinged beaches from Sai Daeng to pearly Sai Nuan, along with mountains draped in misty jungles, and a pumping nightlife scene with bamboo bars that rock until sunup. It’s got a little something for everyone with marine passion. Answer: Yes!

Leave at least five days on Koh Tao if you’re planning on getting a PADI qualification – you’ll need to complete training dives and other exercises which can take a while. If not, it’s still a good idea to have at least three or four days here. From snorkeling in Shark Bay to hiking the rocks of Chalok Bay, there’s loads to get through.

Tao Island Information

Koh Tao Ferry

The premier way to travel to the amazing dive island of Koh Tao is by ferry. Ferries travel frequently between Koh Tao and Koh Samui , Koh Phangan , and Surat Thani making these incredible places so accessible. Plus it's a joy to travel to these places by ferry, either out on the deck or sitting in the comfortable seats inside, watching the awesome surrounding scenery in the Gulf of Thailand. The ferries are very safe and strong, plus they're frequently carrying around 180-300 excited travelers to their destinations. The pier at Koh Tao is called Mae Haad Pier , which is to the southwest of the island. With Koh Tao being such a major scuba diving island, on arrival to the pier you'll often see a colorful parade of boats all lined up as if to say "hi" as you enter in. You'll be captivated by the first sights of Koh Tao because it's a really nice island. Good news for FerrySamui.com customers, all of the ferry operators know us well and are familiar with our e-tickets and customer service processes. Just make sure you get to the pier around 30 minutes early with your printed e-ticket in hand. The staff will exchange your ticket with a destination sticker - its all plain sailing from there. Don't forget to check our Travel Tips page so you're prepared for the day, and keep in touch with us - we'd love to get a journal update if you get the chance! Bon voyage...

Koh Tao Information

Koh Tao ("Turtle Island") is an amazing island of about 21 square kilometers, sitting just north of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. It is one of the best places in the world for scuba diving for beginners to the greatly experienced, issuing more dive certificates to new divers than almost anywhere else in the world. Ferry travel is frequent from Phangan, Samui, and Suratthani, which makes Ko Tao surely as accessible as it is beautiful. And just how beautiful; crystal clear waters, mountainous island terrain, hidden beaches awaiting discovery, and exotic accommodation to retreat to at the end of your intrepid island exploring days.

Tao Island Dive Paradise

Koh Tao is a glorious year-round diving location, attracting divers of all levels to its coral-lined, fish-abundant shores. The ferries and boats each day bring new underwater adventure seekers. Apparently, only Cairns in Australia hands out more PADI diving certificates each year, which is testimony to the dive paradise that Koh Tao has become. In some of the busiest beach areas you can find dive centre after dive centre lining up to provide you with an unforgettable dive experience. Out in the waters, you can find barracudas, sea turtles, stingrays, reef sharks and there's even been some rare sightings of whale sharks. The great thing about Koh Tao diving is that underwater visibility remains great all year long (approximately 20-40m apart from perhaps November). Convincing enough? Surely Koh Tao is worth a visit.

Tao Island Koh Tao Beaches

Most beach activity revolves around two main beach areas in Koh Tao; Sairee Beach and Chalok Bay. Sairee Beach is just north of Mae Haad Pier, which is where your ferry will arrive/depart from. Sairee Beach is long, sweeping, and so beautiful with its golden sands and turquoise shores. Many of the dive centres, restaurants and shops are found here just off the beach, and when evening comes the nightlife is fun and lively too. Chalok Baan Kao Beach is just a small trip to the south of the ferry pier and is much more relaxed and still really tropically special. FerrySamui.com recommends picking up your snorkelling gear and renting a long tail boat around the Koh Tao shores where you'll discover some stunning hidden bays to snorkel around.

Tao Island Getting Around Koh Tao

Koh Tao is one place where hiring a motorcycle is a good thing to do, that's of course if you can and you have the necessary skills. Getting around Koh Tao on a motorcycle is fun, there's lots of cool little scenic viewpoints and hidden coves to explore. A lot of rental scooters have off-road tyres so you can navigate the dirt tracks to places such as Freedom Beach, Mango Bay, Shark Bay, Hin Wong Bay and Tanote Bay. Be careful though, because the roads are basic and need to be navigated with caution. Simply get a map, a water bottle and apply your sunscreen, and off you go. Make sure you check out John Suwan Mountain Viewpoint in the south and Fraggle Rock in the north for some pretty stunning views.

Tao Island Eating and Drinking

With Koh Tao becoming one of the tropical diving destinations of the world, many restaurants and bars have sprung up over time that make Koh Tao a really nice place for eating and drinking. Lots of good Thai food options are available, maybe try the Phad Thai (stir fried noodles with prawns), Krapaew Gai Khai Daow (chicken with spicy chilli, basil leaves and fried egg), or Gaeng Kia Wan (Thai green curry). They're delicious! Naturally, seafood is both cheap and incredible too, whether barbecued, boiled or deep fried. The island bars of Koh Tao are fun and lively. Most have some kind of happy hour or special theme night so it's good to check out when stuff is happening early on during your stay. Most bars are likely to close at around 1am leaving the nightclubs to keep you dancing till bedtime or morning comes.

Koh Tao Ferry

Taking a ferry to Koh Tao is the most convenient way to reach the island. There are no airports here, so travelling by sea on a ferry or speedboat are the only means of inter-island transport to and from here.

Ferries are generally inexpensive, and for just a few hundred baht, you can easily explore the neighbouring beaches.

Koh Tao Ferry, Times, Pier Timetable, Schedule, Samui & Surat Thani

There is another ferry that is also popular among ex-pats and locals, and it is preferred by many because it carries fewer people. If you find other ferries too hectic, you may want to look into one that is more laid-back. It is also equipped with a small convenience shop on board so you can buy some beer and noodles to fill you up during your journey at sea.

Budget travellers may want to consider the cheapest of all the ferries. It will save you some baht, but the journey is slightly longer. This is ideal, especially for backpackers trying to save money. However, if you’re prone to seasickness, you should spend a little more for a comfortable and quick ride.

No matter which Koh Tao ferry you decide to book, they all offer combination ferry and bus tickets; sometimes ferry/train ticket combos too. You may want to consider this option because it will save you time and prevent you from dealing with the hassles of going to another station just to book a separate ticket which you will inevitably need for the journey anyway.
