No Roots by Alice Merton

travel like gypsy in the night lyrics

  • I like digging holes and hiding things inside them When I grow old, I hope I won't forget to find them 'Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night I build a home and wait for someone to tear it down Then pack it up in boxes, head for the next town running 'Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night And a thousand times I've seen this road A thousand times I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots I like standing still, but that's just a wishful plan Ask me where I come from, I'll say a different land But I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night I count gates and numbers, then play the guessing game It's just the place that changes, the rest is still the same But I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night And a thousand times I've seen this road A thousand times I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots I like digging holes Hiding things inside them When I grow old I won't forget to find them I like digging holes Hiding things inside them When I grow old I won't forget to find them I've got no roots No roots I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground I've got no roots I've got no roots (no) Writer/s: Alice Merton, Nicolas Rebscher Publisher: BMG Rights Management, Downtown Music Publishing, Peermusic Publishing Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind

Alice Merton : No Roots Meaning

Album cover for No Roots album cover

Song Released: 2017

No roots lyrics.

Digging holes and hiding things inside them... Bank rubbers are hiding money from the coup in holes they are digging. It's also something dogs do. When they are very fond of a bone. And don't want other dogs to eat it. In Iceland people a putting pieces of shark in holes. It's gives the meat a "sharp" (better? taste) Så my interpretation is, that you are digging holes for something your are fond of, that you don't want other people to take from you. Perhaps you hope times will be better and you can go a get it later.

Update on the post of April 13, 2020 at 11:43- Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the part about "digging holes and hiding things inside them" may be her putting something of herself in these places she's been. Then when she grows old, she can go back and find them and remember the amazing things that happened in those places. I took this part literally, though, of course it is figuratively. She could probably actually mean putting memories in things she sees, if that makes sense. For example, she could look at something she bought in one country she lived in and remember that country just by looking at it. That thing doesn't even have to even be an object she bought. It could be a place that reminds her of another place. When I go to Newport News, Virginia, there's a little bit of it that reminds me of Wiesbaden, Germany and I feel relaxed and kind of at home just looking at it.

Alice Merton said herself that the song was about her moving around almost all her life and not having a place to call "home"; hense the line "I've got no roots". She soon realises that "home" is not a place, but was with the people she loves; hense the line "my home was never on the ground". As a military brat, I can relate to these lyrics very well because us military families move around a lot and not just around America, but around the rest of the world. We "got memories" about all the places we've been and people we've met and every single experience in each of those places wether it be good or bad. And then, when it's time to leave, we "travel like gypsies in the night". Since this happens so often, it's the same old story; we've "seen this road a thousand times". The only thing I don't fully understand is the digging holes part.

It means you don't fit in. Or you're a bank robber.

It's about failed relationships and making the same mistakes in every one, never learning and growing better.

I think it means that you move around too much.

On Alice Merton’s Debut ‘Mint,’ Hooks Conquer Fears

travel like gypsy in the night lyrics

By Jon Pareles

  • Jan. 23, 2019

Alice Merton closes her debut album, “Mint,” with “Why So Serious,” a song full of questions like “When did we get like this?” It’s a wish for a more carefree, less calculating spirit, sung by her overdubbed, call-and-response posse of female voices over a bouncing bass line. And it’s the counterbalance, in some small part, to an album that takes everything extremely seriously, from career ambitions and lovers’ quarrels to the placement of every hook.

Merton has a hearty, natural voice that stays plush while echoing the power of singers like Adele and Florence Welch . It’s a voice made for larger-than-life declarations; the first lines she sings on “Mint,” in “Learn to Live,” are “They’ve got fire/Well, I’ve got lightning bolts.” In more than one song, she sings about her fears and inhibitions, even as her voice leaves no question that she will conquer them.

[ Never miss a pop music story: Get our weekly newsletter, Louder .]

Merton, 25, was born in Germany, grew up mostly in Canada and moved back to Germany in her teens, and she has also lived in England and the United States. Now based in Berlin, she has had a dozen addresses in 24 years. She propelled her pop career in Germany with a single released in 2016, the partly autobiographical “No Roots,” a song about constant relocation that speaks, perhaps, to listeners whose connections are digital, not terrestrial. “I’ve got memories and travel like Gypsies in the night,” she exults over a 4/4 thump, a stop-start bass line and clanky rhythm-guitar chops hinting at 1980s hits by INXS . “I’ve got no roo-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-oots,” Merton sings, with the kind of nonsense-syllable hook she also brings to other choruses on the album.

“No Roots” reached No. 2 in Germany and was a hit elsewhere in Europe, leading to an EP and singles released over the past two years. Recorded with Merton’s songwriting collaborator and producer, Nicolas Rebscher, “Mint” gathers most of the singles alongside newer songs, and every one sets out to be a tour de force. Each verse layers on another instrument, a countermelody, an electronic effect, dabs of backup vocals. Then the choruses land squarely in place, promising forthrightness and honesty. Merton insists on her fidelity in “Funny Business,” warns that she’s going to lose her temper in “Lash Out,” demands explanations from a lover in “Speak Your Mind” and gives up on a no-show partner in “I Don’t Hold a Grudge.”

Although Merton was born in the ’90s, most of her music’s reference points are from the MTV 1980s: not just INXS but Michael Jackson, Eurythmics, Heart, Duran Duran and late Queen, along with touches of house-music piano. (The non-1980s exception is the album’s dud, “Honeymoon Heartbreak,” an attempt at Lana Del Rey angst that borrows its best melodic phrase from Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”)

The songs on “Mint” are designed to leap out from a playlist, with Merton’s immediately appealing voice, the sounds of physical instruments and the craftsmanship that Merton and Rebscher bring to each segment of a song. But listening to the album as a whole, there are diminishing returns from the certainty that a new gimmick is coming every eight bars. Pop songs live by their hooks; it’s no wonder that Merton’s debut album piles them on, eager to please. But for the follow-up, suspense and spontaneity — even if it’s an illusion — would go a long way.

8 Pieces Of Songs About Gypsies

Songs About Gypsies

Gypsy culture is synonymous with a free-spirited existence in equilibrium with the earth and wondrous feats of mysticism.

A surprising number of songs about gypsies replace the natural enchantment of a woman’s beauty with a literal fortune telling witch, blurring the lines between dream and reality while being swept away under a lady’s spell.

Our list collects only the best songs about gypsies to give a compelling insight into the unique culture of a travelling community, bestowed with the best and the worst of nature’s blessings.

Songs About Gypsies

1. Gypsy – Gypsy Queen Part One

Gypsy’s 1970 album-opener Gypsy Queen is a two-part prog rock masterpiece carrying a mystical message of witchcraft .

From its first echoing lyric, “Warning,” Gypsy foreshadow a woman harnessing the hypnotic powers of Mother Nature to lure and capture the hearts of men.

Metaphorising a seductress for a psychic, Gypsy weave their lyrics with fortune telling and a rich, earthly ambience , “She’ll have you in the palm of her hand, you’re left with nothing but still caught up in her trance.”

Gypsy Queen carries an aura of cleansing within its lush distortions, synths and grooves, crafting an irresistibly artistic track laced with a refreshing vintage vibe .

2. Cher – Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves

Cher’s dazzling 70s hit is written from the perspective of a traveler , detailing all the whimsical and ruthless ups and downs of gypsy life.

While the title appears doused in the harsh, stereotypical opinions of her era, Cher uses her striking title and chorus lyric ironically, exposing the nonsensical, hypocritical discrimination felt by the community;

“Gypsies, tramps and thieves, we’d hear it from the people of the town… but every night, all the men would come around and lay their money down.”

She draws upon the essence of family and strength through hardship ; elements woven into the fabric of gypsy culture; “I was born in the wagon of a travelling show, my mama used to dance for the money they’d throw.”

3. Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)

Crystal Water’s 1991 house anthem harbours an unexpected message about homelessness, a captivating twist for a timeless song.

Her lyrical story fleshes out the colourful character of a gypsy lady, singing for money on the roadside in her make up; a performance which claws at the narrator , making them question how poverty can exist to decimate so many lives.

Water’s profound message is obscured within her intoxicating, iconic house rhythm, as she details the links that tie women of any race, culture or class together;

“Her day wouldn’t be right without her make up, she’s never out of make up, she’s just like you and me but she’s homeless… In my sleep, I see her beggin’, reachin’ please, although the fault is not mine, I ask God, ‘Why?’”

4. Steve Hillage – Electrick Gypsies

Electrick Gypsies is a captivating track, mixing the pure sound of prog rock with a cowboy riff , dusted with the atmosphere of travelling through the country.

Steve Hillage opens his track with ominous electric growling , as if cleansing the air with thick fog of incense, allowing his melody to rise like the bright dawn upon the horizon.

Studded with catchy riffs , p sychedelic solos and futuristic ELO-style elements , Electrick Gypsy carries mysticism within its lyrics alongside soul-cleansing visions of nature .

This track tells a story of forming your own commune and building temples of the ‘Electric Age’ to heal the world; “The gypsy life returns again in a form that’s very new, with motor-vans, electric sounds, and the colours of the rainbow, we’ll open up the old straight tracks and fertilize the earth, rediscover the healing sound and ride the psychic surf.”

5. Fleetwood Mac – Gypsy

Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac is a catchy yet atmospheric track , its 80s sound highlighted by captivating vocal melodies which hold a scattered sense of nostalgic sadness compared to the track’s otherwise uplifting soundscape.

This is a song about returning to your free-spirited ways, its lyrics riddled with lightning strikes and the beautiful scenes of nature , “So I’m back to the velvet underground, back to the floor that I love, to a room with some lace and paper flowers, back to the gypsy that I was.”

Gypsy’s echoing outro line, “It all comes down to you” exhibits the gleaming strength, support and perseverance inherent within the bonds of a vibrant community.

6. Cypress Hill – Band Of Gypsies

Cypress Hill embrace a landscape of Eastern sound within their compelling hip-hop track, Band Of Gypsies.

Carried by the striking harmonic ambiance of distant lands, Cypress Hill’s lyrics paint a gritty picture of being a gypsy, threading lines like, “I put the fear of God in people,” and “Run together, unbreakable bloodline,” to give a cut-throat insight into cultural hatred, stereotypes and strength, unlike any other on our list.

7. The Ink Spots – The Gypsy

The Ink Spots’ 1946 track, The Gypsy is lush with cosy, vintage fireside ambience , telling a heartbroken tale of a fortune teller within a caravan.

As the narrator calls upon her mystical powers, he soon believes her untruthful prophecy, wrapping himself in a future that’s better than his melancholic reality;

“She looked at my hand and told me, my lover was always true, and yet in my heart I knew dear, somebody else was kissing you, but I’ll go there again ‘cause I want to believe the gypsy, that my love is true and will come back to me someday.”

This track is soothingly slow, calm and harnessing a beautiful, unique energy that’s been shamefully lost to the modern age.

8. Black Sabbath – Gypsy

Black Sabbath’s track Gypsy is loaded with a magnificent stadium-rock feel , studded with melodic basslines , Beatles -style vocal harmonies and satin guitar tones, whilst favouring strange, compelling structural movements which overthrow all expectations.

Their lyrics capture the ambience of crystal balls, dreams, ghosts and gloom, woven into a tale of meeting a fortune teller who prophesies misfortune and terror in days ahead, “With eyes of fire that were burning my soul, she looked into her crystal ball, she read my fortune then she read my mind, she didn’t like my thoughts at all, she showed me shadows, a spectre of life, my soul just wanted to scream.”

Black Sabbath illustrate their fortune teller as having indomitable power over men, as she embraces the ancient force of femininity to keep souls trapped beneath her spell, “You are the queen of all hell, you took my body, now you’re wasting my soul, you’ve got me under your spell.”

@NUMBER 4 It's a good one with great runs.

Great line: "Learning that we're only immortal, For a limited time"

@davethebald I think of this line all the time, especially since I have more years behind me now than ahead.

"Time is a gypsy caravan Steals away in the night To leave you stranded in dreamland Distance is a long-range filter Memory a flickering light Left behind in the heartland"

Doesn't that just paint the most incredible picture of constantly putting your dreams away and never chasing them down. Something we're all so guilty of, expectation grinds us down until we're just left with nothing but regret. Never get so tied down that you don't leave a glimmer of hope to chase your dreams not matter your age.

I love the line "learning that we're only immortal...for a limited time." I think that sums up the meaning of this tune very well. As someone just getting started in composing and performing music in his 50s...I understand that "limited time" thing VERY well.

@Phx4stringer as someone who took up drums in his 40's, I say "Get out there and rock, and roll the bones".

@Phx4stringer So.. so true. Indeed, we are all eventually able to look back and realize what this means, and no matter what, you would never be able to capitalize on it without the wisdom of your years that you don't yet possess.

Beautiful song about the youth who are willing to travel the entire world & run around the entire earth to follow their dreams.....Plain & simple.....Neil Peart's brilliance

^ Word. This song makes a great opening track.

This is a song about when we were all young and thought the world was our oyster and that all of our dreams were going to come true. This is a great song and I love seeing it live (with all the lasers).

Distance is a long-range filter...Memory a flickering light

Just a few words, in a song, that are so meaningful. What is time? Time is distance. Distance not just me to you, but the larger view of time. The earth rotates around the sun, the sun around the galaxy, the galaxy around the universe. So as days go by we forget most things that happen on a daily basis, which is the long range filter. We remember events, places, people, smells, etc. stored in our brain somewhere still "flickering". How does Neil use so few words for so much meaning? Rush songs to me are so much more than just music and words. I look at things differently sometimes through Neil's lyrics and Rush's music.

When you search for new things, and you don't know the answers yet!

That's to be young!

Travel Like a Gypsy in the Night

travel like gypsy in the night lyrics

The term “gypsy” is derogatory to people of Roma descent, but it has come to mean so much more in North American culture . In our society, gypsy has come to mean free-spiritedness, spontaneity, and bohemianness, not to mention traveling through the night. In fact, it has also been used to describe forced sterilization, and even Hitler’s genocide of the Romany people. But is that true?
