Travel + Leisure

No matter the destination, traveling with sunscreen is one of the best (and usually most cost-effective) ways to protect your skin from harmful rays. If checking in a suitcase isn’t a part of your flying routine, it’s important to bring a travel-size sunscreen that falls under the general 3.4-ounce size limit.

Almost every popular sunscreen or skin care brand carries a mini version of their full-size products, so we researched the best on the market and tested 20 different TSA-friendly options for your next tropical vacation . With options for stick, spray, reef-safe, and splurge-worthy sunblocks, we included various sunscreens on our list that earned rave reviews from Travel + Leisure editors.

Best Overall

Babo botanicals sheer mineral sunscreen lotion spf 50.

  • Transfer 5 /5
  • Opacity 5 /5
  • Water Resistance 5 /5

The consistency feels like lotion so a little goes a long way.

There is a very slight white cast that disappears after you rub in the sunscreen.

From texture to water resistance, the Babo Botanicals Sheer Mineral Sunscreen won us over when we used it on a four-day trip to Hawaii . While we were expecting the formula to feel thick like typical mineral sunscreens, we were big fans of the liquid-type texture that applies like a nourishing lotion. After putting sunscreen all over the body and face at the beach, we loved that the formula absorbs quickly, only has a faint mineral smell, and doesn’t feel greasy.

Best of all, we discovered that a little goes a long way thanks to the lightweight and slightly runny texture of the sunscreen. When we went into the ocean, the sunscreen remained on the skin and didn’t come off or transfer onto any clothes or towels. We used the sunscreen several times per day for four days, and there was still about one-third of the product left over, so we think the value is exceptional for a hydrating and protective 3-ounce bottle.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Vegan | Cruelty and fragrance free

Best Budget

Banana boat sport sunscreen lotion.

The sunscreen is ideal for being active, and it comes with two travel-size tubes.

The formula is not reef-safe.

Banana Boat is one of the best and most affordable brands on the market, so we recommend their travel-size Sport Performance Sunscreen. For a competitive price, you get two 3-ounce bottles that can easily fit in your carry-on. T+L’s digital editorial director Nina Ruggiero used the sunblock on a trip to Mexico and raved about the no-frills formula that is hydrating, protective from the sun, and doesn’t transfer onto clothes or swimsuits. The texture is fairly thick, so it takes a bit of rubbing in to get a sheer finish, but it doesn’t take too long to absorb. “It protected my skin on a long day out on a boat in the sun, and I got a nice glow but did not burn at all,” she shared. The only downside is that the sunblock isn’t safe for reefs, which is something to consider for snorkeling or swimming in tropical waters.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Oil and fragrance free

Travel + Leisure / Nina Ruggiero

Best for Hydration

Coola classic body sunscreen.

The texture feels exactly like lotion, and it doesn’t have an overpowering tropical scent.

It’s not designed to be worn on the face.

“I love how it left my skin feeling moisturized and not goopy,” T+L outdoor gear editor Taylor Fox shared after wearing Coola’s Organic Classic Body Sunscreen every day for two weeks. “It didn't feel like I was wearing sunscreen, but rather a high-quality body lotion.” The formula is made with plant-based ingredients and is safe under the Hawaii Reef Compliant Act, meaning it doesn’t have harmful chemicals that can damage coral reefs . Every time she applied the sunblock, it went on the skin evenly and smoothly without leaving a white cast or greasy residue. It didn’t transfer onto clothing or a towel, and the sunscreen didn’t run off after coming into contact with water. With prolonged use, we still had nearly half of the 3.4-ounce bottle left over, so we think the sunscreen could easily last for a one-to-two-week-long trip depending on how many times you use it throughout the day.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3.4 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe | Vegan | Cruelty free

Travel + Leisure / Taylor Fox

Best Splurge

Shiseido ultimate sun protector lotion.

A little bit of this lightweight formula goes a long way.

The consistency is a slightly watery and oily.

We love that even a small dollop of the Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion blends effortlessly into the skin for a smooth and moisturizing finish. Although the bottle is only 1.6 ounces, the watery consistency makes it easy to spread the sun lotion, so just a little will get you plenty of coverage. The formula feels a bit oily, but after about five to 10 minutes, the sunscreen absorbs with a completely sheer set. For travelers looking for a fragrance-free sunscreen, we didn’t detect any scent, including that typical sunscreen smell. When we ran a sunscreen-soaked arm under the faucet, the formula remained perfectly absorbed without running off, so we feel confident in the brand’s promise of up to 80 minutes of water resistance before you’ll want to reapply.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 1.6 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe

Travel + Leisure / Cai Cramer

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

It completely absorbs into the skin in under a minute.

There is a slight floral scent.

The best part of Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-touch Sunscreen is that you’ll barely feel it on your skin after applying the smooth and lightweight formula. Within one minute of applying the sunscreen, it absorbs seamlessly without leaving a greasy trace. The subtle floral scent masks any hints of typical sunscreen odors, so we didn’t mind the smell. We think the sunscreen consistency is thick enough that it feels hydrating without leaving a pesky white cast. When we wore the sunscreen under running water, it did run off the skin a little bit, but it didn’t cause the stinging in the eyes that can often happen with sunscreen. If you’re looking for sunblock that feels barely there, this one should be on your packing list.

The Details: SPF 55 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | PABA-free

Travel + Leisure / Elena Garcia

Best Reef-safe

Mdsolarsciences mineral creme.

The mineral formula is free of ingredients that can cause damage to reefs, and it absorbs much better than similar eco-friendly products.

There is a slight white cast if you don’t rub it in thoroughly.

The MDSolarSciences Mineral Crème SPF 50 Sunscreen is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, which are two ingredients that can cause coral reef bleaching. As expected with a mineral sunscreen, it was a bit thick, but once we rubbed it in thoroughly, the slight white cast went away. However, the best aspect of this silky sunblock is that it can be used all over the body. Besides the eco-conscious formula, we love that the brand also uses ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc that are designed for sensitivities like acne- or rosacea-prone skin. If you’re curious about the formula, the brand lists every ingredient with the option to click on the name for an explainer of the purpose of the component for transparency.

The Details: SPF 50 | 1.7 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Reef safe | Vegan | Cruelty free

Shiseido UV Clear Stick Protector SPF 50

The stick applicator makes it super easy to apply without getting sunscreen all over your hands.

It might be time-consuming to apply the sunscreen stick all over the body.

Shiseido’s Clear Sunscreen Stick is ideal for storing in your everyday bag for sun protection on the go. The stick is very small, but it packs a punch with a thick SPF 50+ formula that can easily be applied without having to get sunscreen all over your hands. It felt a bit greasy at first, but once we rubbed in the sunblock, the slight sheen went away quickly. “The stick of this sunscreen is clear, so I was delighted that there's no white overdue cast on my brown skin,” T+L associate director Morgan Ashley Parker said. “After I applied it and rubbed it in, there was no way to tell where it had been applied as it fully absorbed into my skin, leaving no residue.” She also used the sunscreen during a sweaty 45-minute workout and we were pleased to see that it didn’t run or rub off, so this is a great face sunscreen option for outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

The Details: SPF 50+ | 0.7 ounces | Up to 80 minute water resistance

Travel + Leisure / Morgan Ashley Parker

Best Mousse

Supergoop play body sunscreen mousse.

The foamy texture is easy to apply, extremely hydrating, and dries faster than lotion.

It’s hard to tell how much sunscreen is left in the bottle.

Parker also swears by Supergoop sunscreen, especially the Blue Sea Kale Body Mousse. Whether you’re applying sunscreen to your face or body, it’s super easy to use the top-press applicator to release the lightweight foam sunscreen. It has a very slight sunscreen scent that isn’t overpowering, and Parker often uses the sunscreen as a hydrating lotion when traveling to tropical destinations . “My skin is prone to dryness and this product feels moisturizing enough that it can replace a separate body lotion for me as well,” she said. “Even when I'm in a hot climate or sweating, there's no stickiness or evidence that something is on my skin.” We love that the formula doesn’t leave any type of white cast or greasiness after application. Parker always recommends it to her friends with kids, as the whipped texture makes it extra fun to apply.

The Details: SPF 50 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Cruelty free | Vegan

Best for Face

Black girl sunscreen broad spectrum spf 30.

  • Feel 4.3 /5
  • Opacity 4.7 /5
  • Water Resistance 4.5 /5
  • Removal 5 /5

The sheer formula is designed to be used as a lotion and sunscreen that won’t leave behind a white cast.

It has a glowy finish.

The Black Girl Sunscreen Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion is designed for melanated skin and made with a variety of ingredients like jojoba and avocado, which protect and moisturize the skin without leaving a white cast finish. We wore the sunscreen over medicated acne creams and loved that it layers smoothly over the other skin care products without transferring or rubbing off when it comes into contact with water. Plus, the formula is fragrance-free, which is better for sensitive skin. If you’re looking for a facial sunscreen with a glowy (not greasy) finish, this sunscreen is a great option.

The Details: SPF 30 | 3 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Cruelty and fragrance free | Vegan

Coola Organic Classic Sunscreen & Sunblock Spray

The can makes it incredibly easy to apply the sunscreen and it rubs in without leaving a greasy residue.

It has a fairly strong tropical scent.

Using a spray sunscreen like this option from Coola makes it easier to reach more difficult parts of the body like the back. We’re big fans of the lightweight and transparent formula of this SPF 30 spray that didn’t leave any type of pasty color or greasy finish behind. And best of all, we couldn’t get enough of the coconut scent that wasn’t too overpowering and transported us to a sunny tropical island. The spray sunscreen dries quickly after being lightly rubbed into the skin, and we appreciated the gentle and nourishing feel of the vegan and paraben-free formula. After using sunscreen on the face every day for two weeks, there was about half left, so we think the 2-ounce bottle would only last for a weekend trip if you’re using it for all-over coverage. However, for quicker trips, this lightweight spray is a great option.

The Details: SPF 30 | 2 ounces | 80 minute water resistance | Vegan | Cruelty free

Best Lightweight

Innisfree daily uv defense sunscreen.

It has the same consistency as sheer lotion.

There is a slightly shimmery finish.

Out of all of the travel-size sunscreens we tested, the Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen resembles the consistency and feel of a sheer face moisturizer the most. The lightweight formula is infused with natural ingredients like green tea, cica, and sunflower seed oil, and it has more of a watery texture than other sunscreens we tried. We think it’s ideal for working out or outdoor activities where you may get sweaty because the sunscreen didn’t run when it came in contact with water, and it absorbs quickly without leaving any clumpy or greasy residue. Instead, it gives a dewy finish that leaves the face looking refreshed and hydrated. It has a very subtle fragrance that isn’t overpowering, and it doesn’t leave any type of white cast after application.

The Details: SPF 36 | 1.69 ounces

Other Travel-size Sunscreens We Tested

This was a competitive test, and many of us gave rave reviews. However, the five sunscreens listed below fell slightly short during testing due to a few minor issues like scent and white cast.

  • Sun Bum Original SPF 70 Sunscreen Lotion : The consistency is thick and hydrating, so we recommend it for the body. However, some rubbed off into our eyes and caused stinging, so we would be cautious about using it on the face.
  • La Roche Posay Anthelios Sunscreen, Melt-in Milk Lotion Face and Body Sunscreen : The sunscreen doesn’t leave a white cast, and it feels very nourishing like a thick lotion, but the chemical smell is overpowering and harsh.
  • Vacation Classic Lotion SPF 30 : The chemical formula rubs in completely sheer, which is ideal for wearing it on the face, but we wish the SPF was higher than 30.
  • EltaMD UV Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Sport Lotion : The mineral sunscreen stayed on our skin for the duration of a sweaty workout without transferring onto clothing. However, there is a slightly greasy residue and white cast after application that we didn’t love.
  • CeraVe Broad-spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick : The stick formula is similar to deodorant, so it’s a little thick and tacky, but it rubs in very smoothly and sheer. We love the small size for tossing in a purse or carry-on.

Over two weeks, T+L tested 20 bottles of liquid, stick, and spray sunscreens. All of the bottles were intended to meet general carry-on liquid requirements that limit containers to 3.4 fluid ounces.

Whether we used the sunscreen at the beach, in the pool, or for any outdoor activity, we rated the formulas based on texture, opacity, water resistance, and transfer resistance. We applied the sunscreen at least seven times all over the body to get the most accurate usage impressions and to get an idea of how long the sunscreen could last for a vacation.

After thorough testing, our favorite sunscreens were easy to apply, rubbed on smoothly without a white cast leftover, and didn’t transfer when we put on clothes over the sunscreen. The best sunscreens didn’t come off instantly when the tester came into contact with sweat or water, and the formulas didn’t irritate the skin or leave a greasy residue. We rated the overall value of each sunscreen after testing was complete, uncovering the prices to evaluate the worth of the sunscreen compared to the price.

Tips for Buying Travel-size Sunscreen

Look at spf and uv protection.

The rule of thumb is to look for SPF 30 or higher. It can be easy to forget to reapply sunscreen after going in the water, so you’ll want to make sure you add more sunscreen after two hours or 80 minutes in the water.

Consider stick, liquid, or spray

Most sunscreens are in liquid form, but there are also sunscreens in sticks and aerosol spray, too. A stick can be easier to travel with — especially as an addition to your camping gear for kids — as you won’t have to worry about any liquid spilling (or, if you're flying, meeting the 3.4-ounce travel size requirement for carry-ons). No matter what kind of sunscreen you get, you’ll always want to keep your eye out for broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and SPF 30 or higher.

Know the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen

Mineral or physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin and acts as a reflection to ward off harmful sun rays, whereas chemical sunscreen absorbs the rays. Mineral sunscreen has ingredients like zinc or titanium dioxide that can be better suited for sensitive or acne-prone skin. Chemical sunscreen is usually a little bit thinner and goes on sheerer than mineral sunscreen, so you’ll want to factor in the differences depending on the ingredients and application you’re looking for in a sunscreen.

Opt for reef-safe sunscreen if you're heading to the beach

A lot of sunscreens can contain active ingredients that are harmful to reefs and ocean wildlife. If you look at the active ingredients lists of a bottle of sunscreen and see oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, or homosalate, then the formula wouldn't be considered reef-safe. See the full list of harmful ingredients , according to the Coral Reef Alliance.

Although it varies by airline, the typical limit for liquids in a carry-on suitcase is 3.4 ounces. Usually, you can bring up to a 1-quart size bag full of liquids on an airplane, otherwise, you’ll want to check your bag if you have lots of liquids to bring.

Bringing an aerosol can like spray sunscreen in a carry-on is allowed on most airlines. However, the 3.4-ounce limit still applies, so if your spray is over the limit, you’ll need to check it to avoid potentially having to throw it away in the TSA security line .

The Best Carry-On-Friendly Skin-Care Kits You Should Pack When Traveling, According to a Dermatologist

travel sun care

Traveling is all fun and games until you start to wonder, How in the world am I going to keep up with my skin-care routine? Whether you have a 10-step regimen  or stick with the basics , consistency is key when it comes to maintaining your glow. That’s exactly why your skin will thank you for becoming familiar with the best travel skin-care kits.

Complexion upkeep starts as soon as you take off, so don't wait until you land to start digging into your travel-sized goodies. "Cabin air is often less than 20 percent humidity, whereas at home, humidity is 30 percent or more," says  Gretchen Frieling , MD, a board-certified dermatopathologist. "That means that skin will lack moisture and dry out faster."

  • Anna Guanche, MD , Anna Guanche, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist and the owner of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas.

With that in mind, you'll want to double down on hydrating ingredients while you're in the air... and keep it going after you've touched down. Anna Guanche, MD , a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Bella Skin Institute in Calabasas, CA, recommends using “a light hydrating hyaluronic acid serum that is fragrance-free" and applying "a hydrating mask about an hour before landing.” If you’re not quite comfortable looking like Jason from Friday the 13th around your airplane companions, you might also consider using eye masks, says Dr. Guanche. For a little extra hydration, Dr. Frieling's a fan of keeping a facial spray on hand to spritz as needed.

Of course, what you put into your body is as important as what you put on your skin. “First of all, I tell people who are traveling that they should hydrate and drink plenty of water, since the airplane dehydrates them,” says Dr. Guanche. According to Dr. Guanche, you also want to be mindful of how much caffeine and alcohol you drink on travel days because they can “exacerbate the dry, sallow look [people] can sometimes have after traveling.”

To maintain these solid skin-care practices once you've reached your final destination, invest in one of these travel skin-care kits that will keep your complexion in tip-top shape when you're traveling for the holidays—or, really, whenever.

The best travel skin-care kits to pack in your carry-on to keep your skin glowing

travel sun care

Even though “at home” is in the name, this is absolutely one of the best skin-care travel kits. It’s got three of Murad’s fan-favorite retinol products (a serum, a moisturizer, and an eye cream)—all of which are designed to be gentle enough for use on all skin types—plus a cleanser. Since a lot of the products contain hyaluronic acid, it’s safe to say Dr. Guanche would recommend this kit to keep skin hydrated while on the go.

tatcha

The Tatcha Mini Treasure Set is a great way to sample some of the Tatcha Greats. You get the one-step Camellia Cleansing Oil (which will remove makeup and clean your face in one fell swoop) as well as The Deep Cleanse, The Essence, The Water Cream, and The Dewy Skin Cream. All are formulated to infuse maximum hydration that truly does show (W+G editors can vouch for this). What more could one ask for from a travel skin-care kit?

travel sun care

The products in this kit include barrier-repairing goat milk and probiotics, which help fight free radicals that can cause premature aging. The set features a moisturizer, an exfoliating jelly cleanser, an eye serum, and a ceramide serum. If all that wasn’t enough to convince you, the kit also comes with a travel bag for easy storage and an adorable gingham hair clip.

travel sun care

A travel skin-care routine doesn’t have to feature 10 steps in order for it to be effective. This travel-friendly skin care kit by Clinique makes skin care simple by narrowing it down to a three-step routine and focusing on the basics (and when you’re traveling, sometimes basic is best). Formulated for dry skin, this kit comes with a gentle cleanser, a clarifying lotion, and a moisturizing lotion.

Florence by Mills (created by Stranger Things actress Millie Bobby Brown) has a travel skin-care set, and it’s pretty excellent—and pretty affordable. It has five stars on Target, and comes with a facial cleanser, a moisturizer, a facial mask treatment, and some beauty products—like a lip gloss, mascara, and blush. What we really love about this set is the Dreamy Dew Moisturizer and Mind Glowing Peel Off Mask—both are rich in hydrating ingredients that’ll make your skin happy.

With this TSA-approved skin care kit, you’ll be able to exfoliate, tone, and hydrate your skin. It also comes with a night cream so that you can take care of your skin as you catch some Zzzs. Since this kit is made specifically for jet-setters, it also comes with a bag to store all your goodies in.

The five products in this skin care travel kit include a cleanser, mask, treatment lotion, serum, and a moisturizer. Some of the key ingredients in this kit are mint, which can reinvigorate your skin’s appearance; niacinamide, which reduces the appearance of pores; and caffeine from coffee, which is a natural way to recharge your skin.

This is one of those skin-care travel kits that lets you treat yourself from head to toe. The Osea cleanser removes surface impurities while the hyaluronic sea serum keeps your skin hydrated by using hyaluronic acid. You also get protection cream, body oil, and a vegan leather bag.

If you’re looking for a travel skin-care kit that treats and prevents breakouts, look no further than this Tula set. It comes with four products: a foaming cleanser, an acne-fighting moisturizer, and a treatment mask. To boot, it comes with a matching travel bag that I kind of want to use as a clutch.

Rihanna is the queen of so many things, skin care included. Featuring a travel-size mini makeup remover and cleanser, a toner-serum, and a sunscreen-moisturizer, this definitely counts as one of the travel skin-care kits that checks all the boxes (and, bonus, that will cut a few steps from your routine). Plus, it now includes a sample of Fenty’s popular Butta Drop Whipped Oil Body Cream (you’ll be thanking yourself you bought it if your hotel room doesn’t supply you with complementary body lotion).

Drunk Elephant re-launched its famous “Littles” a few months ago—just in time for holiday travel. The kit has all of the “big 5” products derms consider non-negotiables for a well-rounded routine (a cleanser, a vitamin C serum, an exfoliating serum, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen—plus a facial oil as an added bonus), so you can literally throw it in your bag and be out the door without a second thought.

13 Skincare Products You Should Bring on Vacation

For when you're on the glow.

Наталия Гусарова/Getty Image

Traveling is hard enough, and trying to pare down your beauty routine while packing for a trip can be a challenge. After all, travel impacts your skin—and rarely in a positive way. So you want to make sure you have everything you need on hand. The best way to go about this is to pack multitasking products, especially ones that contain SPF or calm your skin after a day in the sun. Here are the skincare products worth bringing on vacation.

Supergoop (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder

This could be one of the most useful products you take with you, not just on vacation but anytime you're on the go this summer. A true holy grail, Supergoop (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder ($35) provides SPF 35 sun protection and sets your makeup. Not only is it pocket-sized, but it has a built-in brush that dispenses the perfect amount of product. So, you don’t need to bring an extra powder brush. Better yet, there’s no need to tote around a potentially leaky bottle of sunscreen for re-applying throughout the day.

All Moringa

All Moringa Cold-Pressed Oil

If you’re looking for one product you can use on your face, body, and hair, All Moringa Cold-Pressed Oil ($29) is it. This natural oil is a moisturizer for the face and hair as well as a post-pool or beach soother. You can even use it to shave. It's a minimalist traveler's dream.

Summer Fridays Mini Jet Lag Mask

After a long day—or night—crammed into a plane, using the Summer Fridays Mini Jet Lag Mask ($26) can help you look rested and refreshed. It's loaded with ingredients that'll help hydrate and calm tired skin, such as niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and glycerin.

Iris & Romeo

Iris and Romeo Weekend Skin

Traveling can make skin look dull, so choosing a skincare product with vitamin C is a good way to counteract this. Iris and Romeo Weekend Skin ($50) can help you get your glow on all day long with time-release vitamin C. The transparent mineral SPF 50 formula also helps to combat hyperpigmentation, even out skin tone, and soften wrinkles. There are shades available for both darker and lighter skin tones.

Dune Lifeguard Cooling Aloe Gel

If your vacation plans involve sun and surf, packing post-sun skin care is essential. Dune's Lifeguard Cooling Aloe Gel ($23) soothes with antioxidants and aloe vera—without aloe vera's signature stickiness. It offers 72 hours of hydration, and won't clog your pores while you do it.

Kate McLeod

Kate McLeod Daily Stone Solid Body Moisturizer

Pack along a moisturizer that won't get confiscated by the TSA with Kate McLeod Daily Stone Moisturizer ($45). This solid moisturizer is scented with rose, frankincense, and neroli, and features all-natural moisturizers like cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and apricot kernel oil. Even better? It comes in its own bamboo container to make it easy to pack.

Wild Rose Beauty

Wild Rose Beauty Daily Toner

Wild Rose Beauty Daily Toner ($29) not only contains powerful ingredients like glycolic and hyaluronic acids to help get rid of dead skin cells and moisturize, but its packaging is perfect for travel. This spray bottle can be kept in your purse so you can refresh on the go, or spray a little bit on a cotton pad after washing your face for extra exfoliation.

Rosebud Salve

If you're looking for a multi-tasking product that's easy to pack—and even easier on your wallet— Rosebud Salve ($7) should be on your list. This century-old formulation works beautifully as a lip balm or a moisturizer—and can even help soothe diaper rash, too.

Augustinus Bader

Augustinus Badar The Cleansing Balm

If you’ve ever travelled with a bottle of face wash, you know how challenging it can be to take along any kind of makeup remover product. That’s why packing a cleansing balm such as Augustinus Badar The Cleansing Balm ($80) will make your life easier. There’s no need to worry about leaks or even bringing a separate bottle of eye makeup remover because this product can do it all—leaving you with super soft skin.

Dear Dahlia

Dear Dahlia Paradise Tinted Blooming Balm

Between the dry air on the plane and the heat of the sun, travel can wreak havoc on your lips. Opt for a tinted balm instead of lipstick. We like this one ($29) from Dear Dahlia because it applies like lipstick—no finger or brush required. Infused with sweet almond and argan oils, the subtle color works just as well at the pool as it does out to dinner.

VSoto Exotic Pearl Eye Creme

Traveling can make you feel and look tired. So, if there’s one product you shouldn’t scrimp on, it’s a good eye cream. Vsoto Exotic Pearl Eye Creme ($68) is formulated with essential oils, green tea, and silk peptides to brighten and rejuvenate the area. For an extra kick, keep it in your hotel fridge.

Elizabeth Arden Vitamin C Ceramide Capsules

Elizabeth Arden's clever Vitamin C Ceramide capsules ($95) protect the serum inside—and make it super simple to pack along enough for your trip. This vitamin C-packed dry oil helps brighten skin and reduce the signs of aging.

Beekman 1802

Beekman 1802 Facial Cleansing Wipes

Refresh your face anywhere from the beach to the airport easily with Beekman 1802 Facial Cleansing Wipes ($12)—no water required. The goat milk and citrus oil formulation is easy on the skin—and the wipes give you a soft orange-honey scent.

15 Full-Sun Perennials That Come Back Bigger and Better Every Year

These flowers will thrive in sunny gardens and will come back year after year with bright, colorful, easy-to-care-for blooms.

Perennial flowers are known for their ability to bloom year after year with beautiful colors and foliage. If your garden spot receives little to no shade, though, don't worry. There are plenty of full-sun perennials that not only thrive in the sun but are heat- and drought-tolerant as well, making them easy to care for. Here, we're sharing expert-approved perennial blooms for your sunny garden.

Lavandula Phenomenal

Pez Photography / Getty Images

Featuring fragrant, pretty purple blooms and silvery foliage, the Lavandula phenomenal is a sun-loving perennial that will add both height and color to your garden. Kelly Funk, president and CEO of Jackson & Perkins , says that Lavandula is highly adaptable to many different conditions and requires very minimal watering once it's well-established. "It is also heat and drought-tolerant, making it an ideal choice for sunny areas," she says. "Its resilience and easy-care characteristics make it a great addition to borders, hedges, or any landscape needing color and sweet fragrance."

  • Zones:  5 to 8
  • Size:  2 feet high x 2 feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, moist, well-draining soil

Echinacea "Magnus" Coneflower

Boasting large, bright pink blooms, the echinacea "magnus" coneflower has a long flowering season, stretching from the late spring to the fall, says Funk. The flowers can span from 4 to 6 inches in length and are a haven for birds and butterflies. This perennial is also drought tolerant, giving it the ability to truly thrive in sunny spots of your garden. "The resilience of ‘Magnus’ coneflower in heat and dry conditions and its versatility for garden beds and borders make it a top choice for gardeners looking to enjoy enduring blooms and effortless elegance," Funk says.

  • Zones:  3 to 8
  • Size:  3 feet, 6 inches high x 3 feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full-sun, moist, well-draining soil

Light purple blooms and deep purple foliage are the hallmarks of this full-sun perennial flower. "Its rich nectar and pollen content attracts a variety of pollinators, including hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, enhancing the garden’s ecological diversity," Funk says. "'Blackbeard' is known for its strong, compact stems and upright climbing habit, making it suitable for container planting and grouping in beds or borders. It thrives in sunny locations with well-drained soil." This perennial also has a high tolerance for both heat and humidity, and it's drought resistant to boot, meaning it's an easy care choice for gardeners of any level.

  • Size:  2 feet, 10 inches tall x 2 feet wide

Blanket Flower

Blanket flower ( Gaillardia ) has dainty, daisy-like blooms that stun in shades of red, yellow, and orange, says Mary Phillips, Head of Native Plant Habitat Strategy/Certifications at the National Wildlife Federation . The blanket flower is a hybrid between two different types of gaillardia flowers (a perennial gaillardia ( G. aristata ) and an annual gaillardia ( G. pulchella )) and has adapted to thrive in hot, dry, full-sun conditions. "It's perfect for sunny borders, butterfly gardens, wildflower meadows, or containers," says Phillips. "It attracts hummingbirds and beneficial insects such as butterflies, bees, native ladybugs, and lacewings."

  • Zones:  3 to 10
  • Size:  1 to 3 feet tall x 2 feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full-sun, moist, well-draining, loamy soil

Blazing Star

R A Kearton

Dramatic and tall, blazing star ( Liatris ) has showy flower spikes filled with vibrant purple blooms, says Phillips. They have a pretty lengthy blooming period, from mid-summer to the fall, and are both heat and drought-tolerant. "They're ideal for the back of sunny beds, adding vertical dimension," Phillips says. Blazing star also attracts lots of pollinators, like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, providing a nectar source for them in the summer, while its seedheads provide food for birds in the winter.

  • Zones:  3 to 9
  • Size:  1 to 5 feet high x 6 inches wide
  • Care requirements: Full-sun, moist, loamy, well-draining soil

Native Asters

Asters come in a variety of shades and offer delicate, daisy-like blooms. There are many types of asters, from ground cover plants to climbing vines—and all of them are easy to grow and care for, provided they get 6 or more hours of full sun. Asters are drought tolerant when established and are known for their resilience, says Phillips.

  • Zones:  4 to 8
  • Size:  6 inches to 12 feet high (climbing varieties) x 1 to 3 feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, moist, well-draining, loamy soil

Full-sun exposure fuels buddleia's growth, specifically the Butterfly Candy variety, says Linda Vater, plant expert for Southern Living Plant Collection and Butterfly Candy Buddleia . It comes in five pretty shades, from purple and pink to white, and is drought-tolerant and easy to care for. "I find it so much fun to work in the garden with butterflies fluttering in and amongst these exquisite shrubs," says Vater. "They come in absolutely glorious colors and just keep on blooming throughout the season."

  • Zones:  5 to 10
  • Size:  2 to 3 feet tall x 2 to 3 feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, well-draining soil

Real Charmer Leucanthemum

Quaint yellow flowers are the star of this shasta daisy variety that is both pest- and disease-resistant . "Daisies couldn’t be any easier to grow, and I love that they have a long blooming period, and this pale yellow shade is a brilliant contrast against anything that has really dark foliage," says Vater. "I consider them the sweetest of all flowers."

  • Zones:  5 to 9
  • Size:  22 inches high x 18 inches wide

Jubilation Gardenia

An evergreen shrub, the jubilation gardenia is a sun-loving variety that produces large, fragrant, white double blooms, according to Vater. Once established, they require little effort and are disease-resistant. "Jubilation gardenias are a classic summer charmer with an intoxicating scent from spring well into fall and elegant blooms contrasting deep evergreen foliage," Vater says. "This compact grower has a tidy form and is a reliable repeat bloomer ideal for containers or flower beds near walkways, porches, and seating areas."

  • Zones:  7 to 10
  • Size:  3 to 4 feet high x 3 to 4 feet wide

Show-stopping lilies ( Lilium ) are surprisingly easy to care for, says Peggy Anne Montgomery, horticulturist for Flowerbulb.eu . "Lilies are generally low-maintenance plants," she says. "They require a sunny site and well-draining soil but don't demand constant attention." Montgomery suggests growing Asiatic lilies if you prefer a fragrance-free flower or Oriental lilies if you'd like to infuse your garden with some fragrance.

  • Size:  1 to 4 feet tall

Slim and upright, these perennials (also known as Montbretia) bloom in mid-summer till mid-fall in hot shades of red, orange, and yellows, says Montgomery. "These beauties attract hummingbirds and butterflies, but deer and rabbits don't care for them," she says. "They make excellent cut flowers, and they naturalize easily. They are also excellent planted in containers with annuals in similar hues to add a bright pop of color and surprise in mid-summer."

  • Size:  2 to 4 feet high x 1 foot wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, moist, organically rich, well-draining soil

Agastache "Pink Pearl"

Courtesy of Terra Nova Nursery

Beautifully eye-catching with pink booms, the Agastache pink pearl is easy to care for and grows well in border gardens or containers. "Agastaches are native to sunny plains and even deserts throughout the American West and Southwest," says Chuck Pavlich, director of new product development at Terra Nova Nurseries . "These pollinator magnets enjoy moderately rich but well-draining soil, especially for the winter."

  • Zones:  6 to 10
  • Size:  8 to 16 inches high x 16 inches wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, moderately rich, well-draining soil

Coreopsis Honeybunch "Red & Gold"

This pretty perennial forms a tight, rounded mound of yellow and red flowers that blooms all summer long. "Relatives of Honeybunch 'Red & Gold' come from the sunny American plains and pine savannas, ranging from Ontario, Canada to the north to Georgia in the south," says Pavlich. "'Red & Gold' needs full sun and well-drained soil to be its happiest and have a long life."

  • Size:  10 to 12 inches high x 15 inches wide

Echinacea Cara Mia "Yellow"

These unique blooms feature double yellow flowers that are fragrant and long-lasting, says Pavlich. Plant these in a sunny spot in your garden—they also make great cut flowers, too.

  • Zones:  4 to 9
  • Size:  16 to 20 inches high x 2 and a half feet wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, coarse, mineral soil

Geum Tempo "Coral"

Tall, statement-making pink blooms make this full-sun perennial a dramatic addition to your garden. "Winter hardy throughout most of North America, this geum thrives in a sunny spot with minimal care: only some light summer watering and feeding are necessary to enjoy this garden gem," Pavlich says.

  • Size:  7 to 12 inches tall x 10 inches wide
  • Care requirements: Full sun, moist, loamy soil

The huge solar storm is keeping power grid and satellite operators on edge

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Extreme (G5) geomagnetic conditions have been observed! pic.twitter.com/qLsC8GbWus — NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (@NWSSWPC) May 10, 2024

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

Affordable summer vacations 2024: how and where to travel for less.

Monte Argentario in Tuscany, Italy—one of the cheapest destinations to head this summer?

As Google reveals that one of its most popular travel search trends is currently 'cheap summer vacations', there are lots of ways that travelers can find ideas to travel for less.

This is particularly important as Bloomberg reports that the post-pandemic travel boom, merged with curbs on hotel construction, overtourism and restrictions on Airbnb in many cities, is sending hotel rates sky high, especially in Europe.

It's also clear that travelers might be feeling the pinch. Vacasa, the home rental platform found that while 4th July and Memorial Day will be the big summer travel weekends, its poll suggests that some people have shifted their travel plans or planning behavior to be more budget conscious (81% of respondents), driven significantly by higher cost of living and inflation (74%).

Ways To Find Cheap Summer Vacations

Bloomberg recommends ignoring Instagram feeds for overhyped, over-expensive destinations and instead hitting places under the social radar for cheap summer vacations —in Italy, this might be the picturesque Costiera Cilentana, an hour from the Amalfi coast or the stylish but under-developed peninsula of Monte Argentario, just 90 minutes from Rome's Fiumicino airport.

If Italy still seems like too much on the beaten European track, Romania's travel star has been rising for a while, hot on the heels of the much-beloved (and still relatively cheap) Albania .

When Does Bridgerton Season 3 Part 2 Come Out On Netflix See The Release Schedule

Samsung galaxy s24 series users really want to turn off one of its best features, the best self cleaning litter boxes tested for months.

There are also alternatives to the hotel for cheap summer vacations. Bloomberg reports that European hotel rates have increased 50% since 2019, according to market researcher CoStar Group, so maybe a boat would be better value.

Alternatively, HomeExchange, the home swap website, allows members unlimited exchanges for only $220 per year, meaning you can travel relatively cheaply but also visit places that might not be quite so crowded this summer.

The U.K's Telegraph also advocates finding some of the nicest youth hostels or staying in a mountain bothy in Britain —these are remote shelters in some of the most breathtaking hills and woods across the U.K. that are free to use for just an annual subscription of $32 from The Mountain Bothies Association. There are similar refuge schemes across Europe in the most spectacular places—many also run a basic menu for breakfast and dinner.

Change your mode of travel for cheap summer vacations. Though there are cheaper ways to fly (the London to New York route remains one of the most competitive, if you are available to fly at any time) but one of the most inexpensive ways to travel on holiday this summer might be by train.

The Telegraph lists several examples, notably Eurostar tickets if you book a long time in advance (around $50 one-way)—it's sometimes easier to find deals if you book to Brussels and not London to Paris. The 51-hour rail journey from Chicago, Illinois to Emeryville, California can be had for just under $100 if booked in advance.

Inter-railing across Europe can be cost-effective or you can take the train on a 28-hour, 1,300-mile journey from New Delhi to Goa for just $13 (first class is only $67)—and it can cost less than a dollar to travel across parts of the Himalayas.

Change your mode of finance for cheap summer vacations. One final way of limiting the damage is to use multi-trip travel insurance (if you travel often) and definitely go for a bank card that doesn't add on charges for overseas use and find one that charges lower fees when transfering between different exchange rates.

Women don’t need to travel to receive abortion care. Why is Newsom saying they do? | Opinion

“We’re almost there. We’re gonna make it,” says one young woman to another in a recent ad running in Alabama. The woman looks nervously over her shoulder as they drive past a sign indicating that there is only one more mile until they reach the Alabama border. Then, they hear a siren.

A police cruiser pulls them over and a male officer saunters up to the driver’s side window. “Miss, I’m gonna need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test,” the officer says, leaning on the car and cockily tapping a plastic pregnancy test on the door.

In the next frame, the officer has the woman bent over the front of her car, placing handcuffs on her wrists. A voice-over warns, “Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care.”

The ad, titled “Fugitive,” is funded by California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s Campaign for Democracy PAC, one of several ads and billboards he’s running in states with abortion bans that invite women in need of abortions to leave their states and seek out care from California clinicians. In the last few weeks, Newsom has also encouraged women in Arizona and Florida — two states making headlines for extreme abortion bans — to come to California for care.

Here’s the rub: Women don’t have to travel out of state to get high-quality abortion healthcare. Telemedicine abortion is now available in all 50 states from licensed medical professionals based in California. You’d never know that from Newsom’s ads, which urge viewers to navigate to RightToTravel.org, where the only action that can be taken is to sign a petition telling lawmakers in Tennessee, Oklahoma and Alabama not to pass legislation taking away the constitutional right to travel.

Close to two-thirds of all abortions in 2023 were done with pills, and one in five abortions are done through telehealth with clinicians mailing pills. Women don’t need to cross state borders and travel hundreds of miles for abortion healthcare; they can get on their laptop or pick up their phone and order abortion pills from California clinicians.

We need to raise the alarm about travel bans, but not in a way that misleads people into believing they have to travel out of state for abortion healthcare. The vast majority of people get abortions before 12 weeks and can use telemedicine abortion with pills mailed directly to their homes in days, which is legal for them to do in all 50 states. Telemedicine abortion is a lot less expensive and more convenient and private than traveling hundreds of miles out of state to obtain in-clinic care.

If viewers of this Alabama advertisement somehow found their way to the California government website that directs people to abortion healthcare in the state, the site only lists California providers that require people to travel to our state or seek out telemedicine providers that require patients to travel to states where abortion is legal to receive care. The website does not list California-based telemedicine abortion providers at Aid Access , who serve people regardless of where they are located, or at Armadillo Clinic , who serve people in California and six restricted states.

These providers specifically operate under California’s telehealth provider shield law , signed by Newsom last September (which went into effect in January). The law protects California clinicians from criminal and civil actions initiated in other states for telehealth abortion services they provide to out-of-state patients. Three California-based clinicians, working with Aid Access, are now serving people in all 50 states for a sliding scale fee, up to $150, delivering abortion pills by mail within two to five days.

Aid Access and two other U.S.-based telemedicine providers — Abuzz and Cambridge Reproductive Health Consultants — are operating under telehealth abortion provider shield laws, which are in effect in five other states beyond California: Massachusetts, Washington, Colorado, Vermont and New York. Each month, these clinicians serve over 12,000 people who live in states that ban clinicians within their borders from providing abortion healthcare.

Their sliding scale fee structure is supported by two new abortion funds: the California-based Healthcare Across Borders ’ Abortion Pill Sustainability Fund and The Abortion Coalition for Telemedicine ’s ACT Fund . Another California-based organization, Plan C , offers the most comprehensive guide to abortion pills nationwide.

Through this network of organizations, California is playing a critical role in ensuring abortion access to people living in states with abortion bans — but you’d never know it from Newsom’s billboards and commercials.

Many people aren’t able to travel out of state for abortion care. Many can’t afford it: Half of U.S. abortion patients live in poverty and 75% are low-income. Some can’t travel because of care-taking responsibilities and others have jobs they can’t leave for the time it takes to travel for abortion care, especially if they are living in the South, where all states have now banned abortion access.

Minors and teens often do not have the ability to leave home and travel for abortion care. For undocumented people and immigrants, arbitrary checkpoints block them from traveling for abortion care. Others simply don’t want to travel far from home for healthcare.

These individuals deserve to know all options available to them.

We urge Newsom to start telling women their full range of abortion options and stop telling them they have to travel for early abortion care. Newsom’s messaging should include the most promising way to help people living in ban states to access abortion: telemedicine abortion providers in California and elsewhere who are mailing to patients wherever they are, for whatever they can pay.

Do dogs need sunscreen? Here’s what vets say

Dog sunscreen contains ingredients that won’t make pets sick if they lick it, according to vets.

Applying sunscreen should be part of your daily skin care routine — but should it be part of your dog’s ? We asked vets when dogs need to wear sunscreen, if at all, and how to shop for pet-safe options. Using experts’ guidance, we rounded up dog-safe sunscreen to consider keeping at home, especially during the warmer months.

SKIP AHEAD How to shop for dog sunscreen | The best sunscreen for dogs | How to put sunscreen on dogs | More ways to protect dogs from the sun

Do dogs need to wear sunscreen?

Yes, dogs need to wear sunscreen since they can get sunburns and skin cancer just like their owners, says Dr. Bradley Krohn, a veterinarian with The Vets . “Dog sunscreen serves the same purpose as it does in humans — to protect the skin from damage caused by prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays,” says Dr. Andrew Simpson , a veterinary specialist at VCA Aurora Animal Hospital. Not all dogs are equally susceptible to the sun, however. “Breeds with shorter, lighter coats like pit bulls, bull terriers, white boxers and Dalmatians are more at risk for sun damage, especially in sparsely-haired areas of the body or those without pigment,” says Simpson. With that being said, all dogs can benefit from sunscreen while they’re outdoors for long periods of time. This includes during hikes, trips to the park and while relaxing on an outdoor dog bed .

How to shop for dog sunscreen

First thing’s first: Don’t use the sunscreen that’s sitting in your bathroom or floating around your beach bag on your dog. Sunscreen that’s safe for humans is not safe for dogs, which is why brands make canine-specific formulas. Those are the only ones you should use on your pet.

While deciding which sunscreen is right for your dog, consider the following factors, and consult your vet if you have questions.

  • Ingredients : Dog sunscreen accounts for canines’ unique skin composition and fur coverage, plus it’s lick-safe, says Dr. Lisa Lippman, the director of virtual medicine at Bond Vet . That means it’s made with ingredients that won’t cause irritation upon contact with the skin, and it won’t make dogs sick if they lick it off. For example, zinc and para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) can be toxic for dogs if ingested, so dog sunscreen is made without it, says Simpon. Common ingredients you’ll find in dog sunscreen include titanium dioxide, benzophenone, octinoxate and aminobenzoic acid.
  • Protection level : Most dog sunscreens are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, so they don’t qualify for an official sun protection factor (SPF) rating, experts told us. Many brands, however, offer an estimated SPF rating to give you an idea of protection level. Also prioritize buying a dog sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, meaning protection from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, says Lippman.
  • Formulation : Like sunscreen for humans, dog sunscreen comes in balms, lotions and sprays. Purchase the one that works best for you and your pup. Some people find it easiest to spray sunscreen on larger areas of their dog’s body like the stomach, and use a balm or lotion on the nose and ears.

The best sunscreen for dogs

Best overall: epi-pet k-9 care sunscreen spray.

Epi-Pet K-9 Care Sunscreen Spray

Epi-Pet K-9 Care Sunscreen Spray

Epi-Pet is the only FDA-compliant sunscreen, according to the brand. Its aerosol spray formula is water-resistant, has a non-greasy feel and dries quickly. In addition to protecting dogs’ skin, the sunscreen conditions their coat since it’s made with ingredients like vitamin E . Note that the spray has a vanilla fragrance, which may not be the best option for dogs with sensitive skin.

Protection level : SPF 30+ equivalent | Broad-spectrum protection: Yes | Formulation : Spray | Size : 3.5 oz.

Best stick: Handy Hound SnoutScreen

Handy Hound SnoutScreen

Handy Hound SnoutScreen

Handy Hound’s sunscreen balm comes in a twist-up stick applicator, making it easy to put on smaller areas of dogs’ bodies like their noses and ears. It’s made from plant-based, vegan ingredients like coconut, raspberry, carrot, cedarwood and lavender. Plus, it doubles as a moisturizer.

Protection level : Between SPF 30 and SPF 50 equivalent | Broad-spectrum protection: No, UVB rays only | Formulation : Balm | Size : 2.2 oz.

Best non-aerosol spray: Emmy’s Best Pet Products Dog Sunscreen Skin Protector Spray

Emmy’s Best Pet Products Dog Sunscreen Skin Protector

Emmy’s Best Pet Products Dog Sunscreen Skin Protector

This sunscreen is packaged in a non-aerosol bottle, which some people (and their pets) prefer to aerosol bottles. It’s made with shea butter and coconut oil to hydrate dogs’ skin and coat. The sunscreen is best for covering larger parts of dogs’ bodies, like their bellies. To avoid getting sunscreen in dogs’ eyes, avoid spraying it on or near their face.

Protection level : SPF 30 equivalent | Broad-spectrum protection: Not specified | Formulation : Spray | Size : 8 oz. and 32 oz.

Best wipes: Petkin Dog Sunscreen Sunwipes

Petkin Dog Sunscreen Sunwipes

Petkin Dog Sunscreen Sunwipes

These pre-moistened sunscreen wipes can help you quickly cover a large part of your dog’s body, as well as target smaller, more specific areas. They have a non-greasy, non-sticky feel and contain ingredients that soften skin like chamomile flower extract, lanolin and aloe. The wipes come in a resealable package that’s easy to travel with. They have a coconut vanilla fragrance, which may not be the best option for dogs with sensitive skin.

Protection level : SPF 15 equivalent | Broad-spectrum protection: Not specified | Formulation : Wipes | Size : 20 wipes per pack

select Yes, your dog needs sunscreen, too.

How to apply sunscreen on dogs.

If you plan on spending a long time outside with your dog, apply sunscreen before you leave home and then reapply it every four to six hours, says Krohn. You may have to reapply more if your dog swims or frequently grooms specific parts of their body, says Michael San Filippo, a spokesperson for the American Veterinary Medical Association . A dog sunscreen’s packaging should also have application instructions you can reference.

Regardless of what type of coat your dog has, it’s most important to target areas of their body that have little to no hair coverage, like their noses, ears , bellies and groins, says Lippman. If your dog has bald spots anywhere on their body (the elbows are common), make sure you apply sunscreen there, too. Generously and evenly apply sunscreen across your dog’s skin, and make sure you avoid contact with their eyes.

From there, sunscreen application differs based on your dog’s coat.

  • If your dog has a thick coat , you likely don’t have to apply sunscreen anywhere else on their body because dense hair provides a natural barrier against UV exposure, says Simpson.
  • If your dog has a thin coat , you can apply sunscreen to the rest of their body by spraying it on or rubbing it into their skin. You’ll get some sunscreen on your dog’s hair, but since their coat is thin, sunscreen easily reaches the skin.

How else can you protect dogs from the sun?

In addition to using sunscreen, offer your dog plenty of water and shade when they’re outdoors, especially during peak sun hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., says San Filippo. Brands also make lightweight UPF clothing for pets that he recommends considering, like shirts and hats. UPF apparel is especially useful for dogs with sensitive skin or who tend to lick sunscreen off their body after you apply it.
