How Much Does a Travel Trailer Cost? Average Travel Trailer Pricing

Travel trailers are an excellent home away from home as you road trip around the U.S., explore the national parks , or even to make your home base full-time RV living.

But as you start searching for the perfect travel trailer for your needs, a big thing to consider is the cost of buying a travel trailer.

So, how much does a travel trailer cost?

The price of a new travel trailer can vary depending on size, brand, features, and more. In general, travel trailers cost between $11,000 and $40,000 or more. An average travel trailer will cost about $24,000.

However, you can find a great travel trailer for far less than that – some are even under $10,000 , but there are also lots of small and lightweight travel trailers to choose from that cost less than $20,000 .

In this article, I’ll discuss the different types of travel trailers and their average cost, explain why some trailers are more expensive, and provide examples of different travel trailers and their prices.

I will also outline the benefits of having a travel trailer, and share some of the unexpected costs you should consider when buying a travel trailer.

Different Types of Travel Trailers

IN THIS ARTICLE

Different Types of Travel Trailers (And Costs)

There are several different types of travel trailers, and they vary in size from small trailers that you can pull with a normal car, to large fifth wheels (30 feet or more in length) that require a powerful truck to tow.

Not only do larger travel trailers weigh more , they tend to be more expensive. Length and weight are not the only things that determine how much a travel trailer will cost.

Some of the other factors that impact a travel trailer’s price include:

  • Floor Plan (the more slide-outs there are, the more expensive it might be)
  • Quality of Materials and Construction
  • Body Design
  • Grade/Quality of Appliances
  • Amount of Storage Space

If you’re looking for a travel trailer that’s super lightweight or for small trailers that you can tow with your car, be sure to check out our articles on Lightweight Travel Trailers And Campers Under 3,000 Pounds and Best Small Camper Trailers That Can Be Pulled Behind Your Car .

Why Do Some Travel Trailers Cost More Than Others

Why Do Some Travel Trailers Cost More Than Others?

For the reasons listed above (and some others), some travel trailers generally cost more than others, even when comparing brand new models.

For example, Airstream travel trailers have a small footprint and many are shorter than 30 feet, but they cost more than other standard travel trailers because of their high quality of construction.

It’s useful to keep in mind that a trailer’s price usually has to do with hundreds of small things, not one big thing like size.

Take into account that the quality of the insulation, whether the windows are designed to block UV rays, the use of LED lights or halogen lights, whether there are two batteries or the propane tanks are larger – all of these things contribute to the price.

You’ll also find that trailers with more advanced systems for the entertainment center, power awning, HVAC, etc. will also be more expensive.

However, paying more for comfort and convenience can certainly be worth it when you’re living on the road.

A good rule of thumb is to read lots of reviews from other camper owners who have purchased the camper models you’re looking at, and look out for reviews about some of the less obvious things that may impact your own experience or cause maintenance issues.

Average Cost of Standard and Large Travel Trailers

Most travel trailers are between 22 and 35 feet long, and cost between $25,000 and $45,000.

Standard Travel Trailer

The basic style of travel trailer sleeps around four people and can be towed with a truck or SUV.

These are quite versatile, since they can be towed by lots of different types of vehicles and give you plenty of space while also allowing you freedom to explore in your car while your trailer is parked in your campsite.

With a standard travel trailer, there are hundreds of floor plans and sizes to choose from, so you can find your favorite.

On average, the cost of a standard travel trailer is around $35,000, but you can find smaller and lighter-weight trailers for much less.

Standard and Large Travel Trailers

Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer

The largest towable travel trailer type is a fifth wheel, which can accommodate more people for sleeping and often has two bedrooms or a bedroom and a bunkhouse.

Since they are so much bigger, you often need a heavy-duty pickup truck to tow a fifth wheel.

Fifth wheels are also more luxurious, and cost an average of $45,000 in price, but brand new ones may cost significantly more ($75,000 to $100,000).

We recently did a full article on the average price of a fifth wheel , so you can check it out if you’re considering buying this type of travel trailer.

Toy Hauler Travel Trailer

If you’re needing to bring along your adventure vehicles, such as snowmobiles, dirt bikes, dune buggies or ATVs, you’ll need a Toy Hauler for your travel trailer.

These massive trailers can often be even larger than fifth wheels, since the back area is designed with space for transporting large and heavy equipment and vehicles.

There’s usually a ramp off of the back so that you can easily unload and load your adventure rigs. The average cost for a toy hauler is usually $40,000 to $80,000.

While being around the same size or larger than fifth wheels, toy haulers are typically less expensive because the features and floor plans aren’t as luxurious.

Average Cost of Small Trailers

Whether cost or weight is an issue, there are lots of small travel trailers available to choose from on the market.

We highlighted some of the top examples in an article earlier this year. You can even tow small travel trailers with six-cylinder SUVs like a Jeep Wrangler .

Most small travel trailers cost between $11,000 and $25,000, although you can find them for less than $10,000.

Teardrop Travel Trailer

Teardrop trailers are probably the smallest towable campers on the market.

They usually only have a bed and sleeping area inside, and some have a back hatch with an outdoor kitchen or food prep station.

Teardrop campers can cost between $5,000 and $15,000, with luxury or custom models costing upwards of $16,000. The average price is between $7,000 and $12,000.

Small Trailers

A-Frame Travel Trailer

A-frame trailers have a very unique design, with a peaked roof and a small footprint.

Generally speaking, you wouldn’t want to camp with more than four people crammed into an A-frame travel trailer, and they’re more comfortable for two.

However, they are very lightweight and can often be towed by smaller vehicles, which is a perk if you don’t want to buy a huge truck to tow your camper. An A-frame trailer will cost between $11,000 and $20,000.

Tent Trailer / Pop-Up Trailer

Another very affordable trailer type is the tent trailer or pop-up trailer. These campers have a hard base and roof, which pops up using a cranking system to reveal canvas (tent) walls and slide out beds on either end of the trailer.

The downside with a tent trailer is that you can’t really pull over to the side of the road to cook or use the bathroom in the trailer.

However, a perk of having a tent trailer is that in transit, your trailer is extremely compact and more lightweight than standard trailers, offering significant savings for your gas budget.

Even brand new tent trailers are very affordable, and the average cost of a pop-up trailer is just $15,000.

Hybrid Trailer

As a mix between a standard trailer and a tent trailer, hybrid trailers have hard side walls with collapsible tent ends that slide out with sleeping areas inside.

It has a more solid construction than a tent trailer, but with more sleeping capacity than a standard trailer.

It’s also a more affordable option than standard travel trailers, with an average price of $30,000.

Truck Camper

Another very compact, lightweight and affordable trailer option isn’t towed at all.

Truck campers sit in the bed of your pickup truck so that you can tow other items behind the camper and truck, such as a boat or horse trailer.

The benefit of a truck camper is that you can have your sleeping and camping space as well as towing other recreational gear.

Truck campers can sleep up to four people, but are more comfortable with two, and come equipped with everything you need including a bathroom and kitchen.

You can also detach the camper from your pickup truck and use it set up on jacks in your campsite. On average, truck campers cost about $25,000.

Benefits of Owning a Travel Trailer Instead of a Motorhome

When you’re considering buying a camper of any kind, you may be wondering if it’s better to buy a motorhome or a trailer.

While both types of campers are great for traveling and comfortable to stay in for a weekend trip or multiple weeks on the road.

There are some perks to a towable travel trailer over a motorhome:

  • You’ll always have a vehicle with you to explore more remote areas where your camper or motorhome could not reach (more freedom to roam)
  • You will save on gas if you leave your camper in the campsite during the day
  • You might have more interior space (part of a motorhome is taken with the driving cab)
  • Travel trailers can have more sleeping areas (accommodating more people), and a motorhome may not have enough seatbelts for all passengers (in a travel trailer, the passengers are only limited to the number of seatbelts in your towing vehicle)
  • Travel trailers are often more affordable than motorhomes

What Are the Unexpected Costs of Owning a Travel Trailer

What Are the Unexpected Costs of Owning a Travel Trailer?

Just like any other recreational vehicle, always remember that your travel trailer will have some additional costs beyond the trailer, itself.

There are some initial costs as well as ongoing costs that may be unexpected.

Initial Costs of a Travel Trailer

When you first buy a travel trailer, there will be some upfront costs, including:

  • The trailer itself, plus sales tax (6-10% depending on state) and dealer title and documentation fees (approximately $300 depending on your state and the dealer)
  • Vehicle registration costs (tabs)
  • Batteries – Lots of RV dealers do not include batteries, which can cost $150+ each
  • Additional purchases like septic-friendly toilet paper, black tank chemicals, a black water dump hose, a strong enough hitch ball for your towing vehicle, a generator or solar system, etc.

Ongoing Costs of a Travel Trailer

Some things, such as toilet paper, propane, black tank chemicals, and other necessities will be an ongoing cost. However, there are other costs of owning a travel trailer that might be unexpected:

  • Camper storage (if you can’t store your camper on your own property when it’s not in use)
  • Annual winterization (if you live in a cold climate)
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Annual registration (tabs)

Things to Buy for Your Travel Trailer

Beyond the costs, there are some other items that are smart to have on hand in case you need them when camping and traveling in a trailer:

  • First-Aid Kit
  • Leveling Blocks
  • Walkie Talkies (in case there’s no cell service)
  • Water Pressure Regulator
  • Water Tank Filler Valve (so you don’t have “bubble back” when filling your fresh water tank)
  • Spare Garden Hose (for cleaning up after dumping waste water)
  • Camping Gear: Kitchen dishes, utensils, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, camp chairs/table, tarps, lanterns, sleeping bags or bed linens, etc.

Summary About Travel Trailer Costs

Summary About Travel Trailer Costs

As you can see from the average prices noted in this article and the examples I’ve shared, travel trailers can cost as little as $10,000 or as much as over $100,000.

However, the average is between $11,000 and $40,000. Depending on the type of camper you’re hoping to get, you should plan to spend an average of $20,000 for a standard or small travel trailer, or around $80,000 for a luxury fifth wheel or toy hauler.

When people picture the absolute nicest travel trailers , they probably imagine the “homes on wheels” concept. These fully equipped models come with bathrooms, kitchens, bedrooms, and — in some cases — home theaters and fireplaces. While these travel trailers can put you in the lap of luxury, they’re often the most expensive options.

Teardrop campers get their name from their distinctive shape. These small, lightweight travel trailers usually have enough space for two people to sleep and a few basic amenities like a small kitchenette, storage space, and maybe even a toilet or shower.

Teardrop campers are popular because of their size, ease of towing, and affordability. They’re great for people who want to camp in remote locations or places where traditional RVs might not fit or be allowed.

Toy Haulers

Toy hauler travel trailer with couple and dog walking

Toy hauler campers are travel trailers that carry recreational “toys” like ATVs, bicycles, and motorcycles. The rear part of the trailer resembles a garage area with a ramp for loading and unloading. Toy haulers, including those that mid-size SUVs can tow, can come in different sizes. Some are fifth wheel models with multiple slide-outs and other amenities, including sleeping areas, kitchenettes, and bathrooms.

The combined living space and garage functions make toy haulers great for outdoor enthusiasts who want to travel to participate in activities like off-roading or motocross. Toy haulers are often heavier than other travel trailers due to the added weight of the garage. Make sure your vehicle can safely tow the trailer and your equipment.

Pop-up campers are travel trailers that are lightweight and easy to tow. They usually feature collapsible walls and roofs that can be raised to provide headroom and living space. A collapsed pop-up camper is much smaller than a traditional travel trailer. This makes them easier to tow and store than other types of popular travel trailers.

Pop-up campers are an excellent fit for budget-conscious campers who want convenience without the expense or weight of larger models. They’re a perfect fit for off-road adventures, too. If there’s a downside, it’s that they don’t provide much insulation or protection from the elements compared to other models.

Pros and Cons of Travel Trailers

Like any camping equipment, owning a travel trailer has pros and cons. Before you buy one of the popular travel trailers on our list, consider the following:

Pros of Travel Trailer Ownership

  • Lots of space: Travel trailers can offer lots of living space. This makes them an excellent choice for families or friend groups who want to travel together.
  • Great amenities: The best travel trailers typically have features like full-size beds, kitchenettes with sinks and stove top burners, microwaves, refrigerators, A/C and heating systems, and slide-outs that can expand the living area.
  • Flexibility for traveling: Unlike motorhomes, you can unhitch your travel trailer from the tow vehicle once you reach your destination. This lets you explore the surrounding area without taking the whole camp along for the ride.
  • Affordability: Compared to drivable motorhomes, travel trailers tend to be more affordable in both purchase price and maintenance costs.

Cons of Travel Trailer Ownership

  • Towing challenges: A travel trailer requires the right tow vehicle with enough power to pull the weight. Inexperienced drivers may find maneuvering on the road or backing up into tight spaces challenging. For more information on determining if your vehicle will work, check out our tow guide .
  • Storage space: Larger travel trailers require a lot of space. In most cases, HOA or municipal regulations prohibit storing them on your property. That means finding and paying for a permanent storage location.
  • Maintenance costs: Travel trailer maintenance costs can add up quickly, like any vehicle or home on wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Trailers

Before we wrap up, let’s address some common questions about travel trailers:

What is the most reliable brand of travel trailers?

While all the travel trailers on our list are great options, reading reviews and talking to people who know the products well is important. Jayco, Thor, Coleman, and Winnebago have spent decades building their reputation for quality travel trailers.

Is it worth it to own a travel trailer?

Whether or not you view the travel trailer as a good investment depends on your unique situation. Every family is different. If you want to explore the great outdoors regularly but not at the expense of home comforts, a travel trailer can offer the right balance of amenities and flexibility.

Travel trailers do require maintenance and a suitable vehicle to tow them around. If you don’t like the idea of dealing with a trailer, other RV options—including Class C RVs and camper vans—may be a better fit.

What is the average lifespan of a travel trailer?

Travel trailer lifespans depend on many factors, mainly usage, maintenance, and storage conditions. You can enjoy your travel trailer anywhere from 10 to 20 years with proper care and maintenance. If you don’t maintain it or frequently expose it to harsh weather or neglect, it can severely limit your use time.

How much should I spend on a travel trailer?

How much you spend on a travel trailer depends on what you think is essential. You can find used, lower-end models for under $10,000. Larger travel trailers with luxury amenities can cost upwards of $100,000. Consider your budget and what features are essential, and don’t forget to factor in storage fees.

If you’re curious about the affordability of a travel trailer or payment plans, ask about RV financing .

Average Cost of New Travel Trailers (With 16 examples)

Published on August 1st, 2016 by Camper Report This post was updated on August 29th, 2024

trailer-fall-color

I recently purchased a brand new travel trailer and did tons of price shopping to find the best prices.  Brand new travel trailers const significantly more than lightly used travel trailers because they depreciate quickly; however, since trailers can easily have things break, for many users it is worth buying new so they know everything will work perfectly when it’s purchased.

I found a wide range of prices, but in general, here are my findings.  A new travel trailer typically costs between $11,000 and $35,000.  An average 24′ travel trailer with decent construction will cost approximately $23,000.

Obviously, the price depends on a lot of different factors–not the least of which is the size and construction quality.  If you’re looking for a basic trailer with lower-end appliances and construction, then Coleman is a good brand to look into.  They often sell for HALF the cost of the more expensive brands, but for many families it may be a good option still.

Average Travel Trailer Cost Examples

Here are some examples of prices for new travel trailers that I saw.  These are not the list price, but the price that I think you could expect to get after some negotiating.  For my tips on how to get a great price on a new travel trailer, read this article !

  • $11,000 – Coleman CTS17FQWE (21′ trailer with VERY BASIC bare-bones features, budget construction, and siding with no slide out)
  • $13,500 -Coleman CTS235QBWE (27′ trailer with very basic features, siding, budget construction, and no slide outs)
  • $14,000 – Jayco Jayflight 145RB Baja (14′ with siding and basic features)
  • $15,000 -Starcraft AR-ONE 20BHLE (24′ bunkhouse plan with fiberglass exterior, decent features)
  • $17,000 -Coleman CTS262BHWE (32′ with very basic features, slide, budget construction, bunkhouse model)
  • $18,500 – Forest River Gray Wolf 24RK (33′ feet, fiberglass walls, nice features, well made, sleeps 3)
  • $19,000 – Shadow Cruiser 195WBS (22′ with a slide, very well made with nice features)
  • $22,000 – Rockwood Mini Lite 2109S (22′ with a slide, sleeps 4, extremely well built and nice features)
  • $23,000 – Jayco Jay Flight 23RB (23′ bunkhouse with a slide, and good construction)
  • $23,500 – Heartland Mallard IDM29 (33′ bunkhouse with a slide, very well made)
  • $24,000 – Rockwood Mini Lite 2504s’ (25′ travel trailer with slide, bunks, and lots of upgraded features)
  • $25,000 -Keystone Cougar 24SABWE (28′ with a slide, very well made and nice features)
  • $29,000 – Forest River Vibe 268RKS (34′ with a slide and sleeps four, very nicely appointed)
  • $32,000 – Forest River Wildcat 28RKX (32′ and very well made with excellent features)
  • $35,000 – Keystone Outback 326RL (53′ with 3 slides and nicely appointed)
  • $35,000 – Jayco White Hawk 28DSBH (28′ with fiberglass walls, slide out, and very nicely appointed)

Hopefully that gives you an idea of what you might pay for a brand new camper trailer.

Don’t Forget!  You’ll have additional expenses!

As one who recently paid up for a new trailer, I can tell you that there will be many additional associated costs.  Here are some things to consider:

  • Sales tax!  Don’t forget that if your state charges sales tax (often of 6%!), you’ll have to add that to the purchase price
  • Dealer title and doc fee (Plan for about $300 depending on the dealer and state)
  • Insurance (I wrote an article on how much it costs to insure a travel trailer )
  • Blackwater dump hose, cords, etc (I have a full article here on all the things I had to buy to get my trailer working after buying a new one )
  • Two batteries (Be sure to check!  MANY RV lots do not include batteries in the sales price.  RV batteries can cost $150 each or more!)
  • Propane tanks (Be sure they are included and find out if they come filled or not)
  • Spare tire (Often not included in the sale, and you’ll ABSOLUTELY NEED to have one with you)
  • Generator (Typically between $900 and $2,500.  Read my review of my favorite inexpensive generator here .)
  • Storage (If your trailer can’t be stored in your side yard, then you’ll need to pay for storage.  This will differ dramatically depending on where you live.  I pay $95 per month for covered storage in Boise, Idaho).

What Makes the Prices of Trailers So Different?

As you can see from the example prices above, there is a huge difference in the cost of travel trailers–even if the floorplan and basic size are the same.  A 21′ Coleman can be had for as little as $11,000 while a 21′ Rockwood, Shadow Cruiser, or Forest River can be $23,000.  Why?  I’ll tell you a story to illustrate.

Our first night in our new Rockwood 2504s (click for my tour video on Youtube of the new trailer)  , a gentleman came up and talked with us who was camping close by.  Turns out we had both purchased our new trailers the day before from the same dealership (Camping World in Meridian Idaho), and we were both out camping for the first time in them.  He bought an inexpensive Coleman and we bought a more expensive Rockwood.  They were about the same price.  He’d paid almost half of what we did, so I was curious to see if he liked it (if I’d paid too much!).

It was really sad.  He totally regretted his purchase and had numerous problems with his trailer on the first night.  It wasn’t any one thing.  The fridge was difficult to use, the sink faucet leaked a little, etc etc.  It was a hundred things that just didn’t work as well as he’d hoped.  There wasn’t anything BROKEN, the features just weren’t as well made and he regretted not spending a little more.

I’m NOT trying to bash Coleman campers AT ALL.  We all have different budgets and if that’s what you can afford, you’ll probably love it!  Any trailer that gets your family together out in the woods is a good trailer, and saving the money is usually the smart decision.  Anyway, the only reason I share this story is that the price of a travel trailer is usually in hundreds of little things and not one big thing.  It’s the quality of the showerhead, the insulation that the windows provide, getting LED lights instead of halogen, more storage, frameless windows, two batteries, larger propane tanks, a powered awning, an entertainment center, etc.  It’s a thousand little things that the specs of a trailer don’t really show.

So as you’re shopping for a new trailer, just be sure that you read lots of reviews from ACTUAL OWNERS of the trailer, and look for the less obvious things that will prevent you from having maintenance problems down the road.  If your trailer is a headache to use, you’ll be tempted to stay home on Friday night instead of taking the family on the road.

You don’t have to spend a fortune to find a nice trailer, but hopefully this gives you a primer on some things to consider.  Just be sure to check out my tips on getting a good deal on a new trailer before you buy!

Jim is the shipping/transportation fee usually charged separately when negotiating the price or does the MSRP include it?

Hi. I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this valuable information. I’m not looking to buy a camper right now but I was browsing the internet to see if pull campers can be rented and I read your article.

I own my home and 2 acres of land out right and don’t wish to go in debt. The downside is it’s a very old and tiny home with no room to accommodate guests so I started thinking renting a pull camper to setup on my property for guests might actually be a good resolution. I didn’t realize they could be bought for as little as $11k! That’s great news! I’m now thinking buying a camper to set up permanently and hook up to my septic tank might be the better choice because I could use it as my hobby/craft/office space or whatever when I don’t have guests.

Anyway… thanks again for the info!

We are trading in our Springdale for a 2019 36 foot Salem do you know of any issues with this model.

Do you know anything about the Aspen Trail by Dutchman 28 foot rearkitchen with slide out?

Great information. I am reviewing trailers less than 27 ft, preferably 24-25. Looking for power tongue jack, power leveling, and power awning. My husband and I had a 30 ft. Airstream, however all manual, and for me to use alone it was more than I want to do. I appreciate your information and am going to check out your recommendations. Thanks so much.

Great article! This information is very helpful.

First time buyer need buying information

Awesome! I’m reading through all of your links getting ideas for buying an RV for a good price and saw your link to your review. I’ve watched your video like 3 times because that’s the model I’m looking at. Had no idea this was your site with all of this great information! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences!

What about buying a new but older yr model? A new 2016 Jayco Melbourne 24K after the 2018 models are out? Any suggestions on making sure we get the best price? How will depreciation differ?

Jim, my wife and I started an rv rental business in 2015. Prior to doing that I researched and visited almost every large rv dealerships on the east coast before buying our first unit, a 2014 Jayco class C Greyhawk 29mv with full body paint and most of the extras included. MSRP $118,238 we paid 70,000. Our second purchase in February of 2016 was a 2016 class A Georgetown 364ts, MSRP $162,500 we paid $98,000 for that unit with a 5 year warranty included in the price. We are in the process of buying a Jayco travel trailer 28 DSBH I started with an offer of $23,000 and expect to get it for under $24,000 and this is not dealer pricing. If you go to RVT.com and look at rv values type in the unit you are looking at it will give you high, low and average retail. These are the values the industry wants you to believe. If you then scroll down you will find the NADA RV values, type in the same unit and it will give you different numbers. NADA numbers are closer to what the dealers need to sell the unit for. Give it a try you’ll be surprised.

Awesome information, thank you for sharing. I look forward to using this tool when I finally settle on what I want to purchase. If only deciding between the Class A and the Fifth Wheel were as easy as using this tool.

7 Best Travel Trailers to Buy in 2024 [+Brands to Avoid]

The most popular type of camper or RV on the market is a travel trailer and that being said, there are dozens of travel trailer brands to choose from.

Of course, you’ve probably heard of popular travel trailer brands like Airstream and Grand Design, but what you really need to know is which of these top-rated travel trailers are worth the money and which of these brands should you be avoiding.

After traveling the country in our RV full-time , we’ve got the insider experience on exactly what details everyone needs to consider when buying a travel trailer and which upgrades are actually worth having.

Most Reliable Travel Trailer Brands:

Northwood Mfg

Outdoors RV

Grand Design

Best Travel Trailers

After living in a trailer full-time while traveling the country for 2 years we’ve done our research and know from experience exactly what to look for when buying our next camper.

Best Overall: Airstream Flying Cloud Best Family Trailer: Grand Design Reflection Best Toy Hauler: Outdoors RV Best for Off-roading: Opus OP 15 Best for Winter: Northwood Arctic Fox

Keep reading to know all the pros and cons for each of the 7 top-rated travel trailers and jump to Buying Tips for Travel Trailers or Brands to Avoid when buying your next trailer.

1. Airstream Flying Cloud - Travel Trailers

Best for: a luxury travel trailer for couples to families that will last for decades and has the best resale value

best trailer - airstream bambi

Overall Length: 23’ to 30’ (depending on model) GVWR: 6000 to 8800 lbs MSRP : $94,400 to $124,500 Holding Tanks: 37 gal. fresh/37 grey/17 black (model 23FB)

best resale value of all trailer brands

plenty of layouts to choose from for couples to families

most aerodynamic and easy to tow for the size

features for those who work remotely

upgraded and modern appliances

expensive entry price

no slides to give extra floor space

lower clearance not ideal for off-roading

smaller holding tanks than other brands on this list

There isn’t a more iconic travel trailer than the Airstream, and for good reason. No other trailer is going to hold its value, especially not over decades like the Airstream will.

Airstreams aren’t just a collector’s item either, they are actually built incredibly well from the aerodynamic “aircraft grade” aluminum alloy frame to the modern appliances and technology.

The “Flying Cloud” series has more floor plans than any other model and is perfect for couples to families alike. Yes, it is expensive, but no other travel trailer will hold its value like the Airstream. Even the second highest-rated travel trailer on this list (Lance) usually drops 30-50% in price after just 2 years, while Airstream takes 10+ years to drop that much in price.

While you can opt for the less expensive models of Airstream like the Bambi and Caravel, I think their features are lacking for the price and they are only suitable in size for couples. The Flying Cloud comes stock with the front rock guard, a walk-around queen-size bed, larger holding tanks, a tandem axle, a larger fridge, and more cargo-carrying capacity.

2. Lance Travel Trailers (all models)

Top Feature: The best quality built trailer for the money

travel trailers prices

Overall Length: 20’ to 30’ GVWR: 4500 lbs to 8900 lbs MSRP : starting at $45,000 (smallest model) Holding Tanks: 45 fresh/40 grey/40 black (gal.)

built incredibly well and for longevity

can buy used for a much better price than Airstream

larger holding tanks

smaller sizes also have slide options

great for winter camping

too heavy for most SUVs to tow these trailers

not as many layout options for families

Lance has carried the legacy of making top-rated truck campers for decades and since 2009 they have expanded to making travel trailers with the same expert quality.

Lance really goes for the details like making the entire cabinet out of real wood so it doesn’t fall apart on your first road trip (if you know, you know).

While there are a few reasons Airstream stays away from slides on a trailer, Lance is actually one of the few brands that reinforce the slides with quality construction so they don’t leak or jam on you after a year or two of consistent use.

Lance Travel Trailers also come standard with an All-Weather Package for 4 season camping, Goodyear radial tires, tinted Thermopane windows, and a front opening window for stargazing. You can also add the solar package with 190-watt panels, a 1500W inverter, and lithium batteries. The entry price for most models is going to be less than Airstream, but you won’t find the same resale value as you will with an Airstream. With that said, that also means you can find used 2017-2020 models in great condition for around $25,000-$30,000.

3. Grand Design Reflection Series

Best for: a high-end and spacious travel trailer for full-time living

best travel trailer for families

Overall Length: 33’10” to 37'11" GVWR: 9,995 lb to 11,295 lb MSRP : starting at $50,000 Holding Tanks: 54 fresh/86 grey/43 black (gal.)

incredible quality and design for the price

large 16.4 cubic ft residential fridge

washer/dryer prepped

slides are in perfect location to feel extra roomy

roof-mounted solar panels are standard on select models

rig is fairly large to be towing more than once a month

bunk models only offer a queen size master bed

small holding tanks for families that also plan to dry camp

Grand Design is one of the higher-end RV brands and they somehow can make luxury still affordable.

Their travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers offer the perfect layout for couples and families alike. Grand Design keeps its interior design modern yet classic with a quality-built frame, cabinets, and furniture.

The Reflection series is nice for those who plan to stay in place for longer periods of time given their large bodies, numerous slides, and residential features like the large electric-only fridge.

If you are looking for a travel trailer that is easier to tow and better for traveling more often, take a look at their Imagine series.

The Reflection 312BHTS model seems to be the perfect layout for either a family or remote working couple as the bunkhouse can be converted to your needs.

It offers a fridge that is the same size you’d find in most homes, a washer/dryer option, and 3 slides that open up the living space significantly. Additionally, there is a full entertainment system with a 40” TV, fireplace, and theater seating.

4. Northwood Artic Fox - Travel Trailers

Top Feature: best built trailer for cold winters

best travel trailer

Overall Length: 23’10” to 34’4″ GVWR: 7500 lb to 11,000 lb MSRP : starting at $52,000 Holding Tanks: 50 fresh/42 grey/35 black (22G model)

best built trailer for full-time living in all seasons

large holding tanks for dispersed camping

Aerodynamic One Piece Front Cap

layouts aren’t good for families

some interior models look a little rustic

If there is one thing Northwood Mfg is most proud of, it’s their superior construction of travel trailers.

They are one of the very few “true” 4-season travel trailers to withstand RVing in the cold winters and the build there trailers with quality in mind first vs looks.

The aerodynamic, aluminum frame makes a significance difference in lessening trailer sway and drag when you’re towing this large of a trailer.

Additionally, because Northwood prides themselves on quality, you’ll find luxury upgrades throughout like a real porcelain toilet, heated holding tanks in fully enclosed underbelly, Goodyear tires, extremely nice cabinets made with residential frame construction and real wood cabinet/drawer fronts.

A small solar panels comes stock, but we’d recommend the upgrading to add 400 watts of solar panels or the generator if you plan on going off-grid in your trailer.

5. inTech RV Terra

Best for: those who like the Airstream but need a more affordable price

bestTravelTrailers_intech-terra-rover.jpeg

GVWR: 7500 lbs Overall Length: 26’ MSRP : $61,600 Holding Tanks: 44 fresh/39 grey/39 black (gal.)

built on an all-aluminum frame

Rover models adds 3” lift

aerodynamic making it easier to tow

off-grid package adds 400W of solar and 200aH lithium battery

not enough outdoor storage

the bathroom and shower space is tight

no bedroom door

If you like the quality, look, and longevity of an Airstream, but don’t want to spend the money, the inTech Terra travel trailers are a great option!

They are made with a high-end all-aluminum fully welded cage frame that is lightweight, corrosion resistant, and incredibly durable.

While small, the multiple wrap around windows and sleek cabinetry make the trailer seem much bigger. Other standards I really like are the heated underbelly and tank heaters, the extremely durable woven flooring, and the two oversized twin bed option.

While there is plenty of cargo carrying capacity, there isn’t much outdoor storage space. Another con is the shower space is very small, but I personally don’t care as I’m not spending much time in the shower when I’m out camping.

The Terra is offered in a smaller 22’ model (Magnolia) and the 26’ model (Willow) . The biggest different is the bed layout and room to walk around the bed.

With either model, I’d recommend going with the Rover package to get +3” of ground clearance, blackout wheels and better tires. Additionally, the off-grid package is very nice as it’ll add 400 watts of solar panels, (2) 100aH lithium batteries, and a 2000W inverter.

6. Opus OP 15

Best for: Families who enjoy serious off-road adventures with top-end features

best travel trailer off road

Overall Length: 23’ GVWR: 6393 lbs MSRP : $59,900 Holding Tanks: 60 fresh/17 grey/10 black (gal.)

best off-road capabilities and upgrades

huge freshwater tank

300 watts roof-mounted solar panels

king size master bed and twin bunk beds

kitchen is outside

only walls for separation are for the bathroom

longer setup time

This travel trailer was specifically designed to be the best off-road trailer for a family of four.

Between the king-size bed, twin bunk beds, full bathroom, and complete kitchen setup you aren’t going to be missing out on much.

When towing off-road, you cannot beat having the OP15’s galvanized and welded stainless steel chassis, a trailing arm suspension with dual shock absorbers, stone guard, and two spare full-size tires.

Knowing families will be going off-road and therefore off-grid, the OP 15 comes stock with 300 watts of solar mounted on the roof and 3x 100ah AGM batteries or you can upgrade to Lithium batteries (which we highly recommend).

While an outdoor kitchen isn’t as ideal this one at least comes fully loaded with a slide-out 4-burner stove, sink, prep deck, a lockable pantry, and a 12v (75gal) Fridge/Freezer combo.

SOON! The new 2024 OP16 will be on the market and has an indoor kitchen

This trailer does offer many amenities and an expanding footprint that most off-road trailers don’t, but it does mean the setup and breakdown are going to take longer. Personally, I do think it’s worth the added time and effort.

7. Outdoors RV Trail Series 27TRX

Best for: those wanting to haul toys and need a durable trailer for off-road adventures

travel trailers prices

Overall Length: 33’2” GVWR: 13,995 lb MSRP : $75,000 Holding Tanks: 100 fresh/65 grey/40 black (gal.) Fuel Tank: 40 gallons

extremely durable and built for the off-road

a “true” 4-season weather package

roof-mounted 170 watt solar panel comes standard

8’x11’ storage space for side by side or motorcycles

smaller company that cannot produce as many

semi-outdated interior design

no slides to give a larger living space

Outdoors RV is a fairly new Oregon-based company that started in 2009, but they have quickly made a name for itself as being built incredibly well.

They specifically set out to create the best travel trailers that are designed for the rugged mountain states and western Canada. Meaning they have a true 4-season weather package to withstand harsh winters and come standard with high-end 16″ G range GoodYear tires, an off-road x4 MorRyde suspension, and 6800lb axles to give you peace of mind when going off the beaten path.

When it comes to fun, you can easily load up your toys on the non-slip ramp and you’ll be all set with the onboard Cummins Onan 4K Generator and 40 gallon fuel station.

Once you’re at camp, turn the ramp into a fully surrounded patio with its own entry step and rear awning.

And if you are worried about having to close up the patio every time you leave the trailer behind, no need, as this model is built with a sliding rear patio door with a tint and lock.

Travel Trailer Brands to Avoid

If you’re in the market for a new RV, you will do best by avoiding travel trailers made by Palomino and the RV giant known as Forest River.

Keep in mind Forest River also owns and makes 45+ additional trailer brands like Cherokee, Rockwood, Wolf Pup, and R-pod which I would also stay away from. It goes without saying quantity far surpasses quality for the Forest River brand.

I know the affordable price tag for most of their travel trailers can be attractive, but these are the travel trailers I see people regret buying as they tend to break down after a year and don’t hold their value after two years.

I’d also recommend staying away from travel trailer models with terms like “ultra-lite” or “half-ton” as usually these are made with more plywood than wood and lower quality flooring, insulation, and paneling to make them lighter while still being larger.

Tips - Buying a Travel Trailer

Know your tow vehicle : IMPORTANT! you must know the towing capacity and payload of your tow vehicle before you buy a trailer. Ideally, you want a trailer with a GVWR that doesn’t exceed 85% of your vehicle's towing capacity so you aren’t putting as much strain on your vehicle’s transmission or brakes. For example, if your truck or SUV says it has a 5000 lb towing capacity, you will want to aim for trailer with a GVWR of 4250lbs or less. The GVWR will include the weight of the trailer itself, any items or gear you put into the trailer when towing, and the weight of the water in your holding tanks when towing.

How much water do you need : most people don’t realize having bigger holding tanks for fresh, grey, and black is a huge benefit when camping. Unless you plan to stay at RV parks with full hookups or only camp 2 nights at a time, you should consider having a freshwater tank that holds at least 25 gallons for 2 people. Personally, we average about 2 gallons of water per person per day (from consumption to cleaning).

Decide if you’ll need higher clearance : do you plan to go boondocking or down dirt roads with your travel trailer? If so, you are going to want a travel trailer with higher clearance and upgrade to all-terrain tires.

Length restraints: Obviously the bigger the trailer the more space and features it can have, but that also comes with a price. The longer the trailer the more complicated it is to park and the likelihood it will sway when towing. Most campgrounds, especially state and national parks, have very few (if any) spots for trailers over 30 feet long. Lastly, if you plan to park your trailer at home when not camping, make sure your HOA doesn’t have restrictions.

Explore the trailer in person: go to an RV dealer, or even better, an RV expo so you can physically get inside and test different travel trailers to know what you really need vs want.

Make a list of your must-haves: it can get overwhelming when looking at so many different models so create a spreadsheet of the different models you’re interested in and note if they have your wants/needs.

Final Thoughts:

I suggest going into Facebook groups or googling the specific RV you’re interested in to see forums (such as Reddit) of current owners and their thoughts before buying any RV.

There are always bad apples, but if you are reading more bad than good experiences that should be your warning sign.

Feel free to comment below if you have questions about a specific travel trailer brand or model and we’ll let you know if we have any experiences with it to help you in your buying decision.

Benefits of Owning A Travel Trailer

  • Your everyday truck or SUV could tow your unit so there isn't always a need to purchase a dedicated towing vehicle. Make sure that you check out your vehicle's towing guidelines before purchase!
  • Travel trailers are the least expensive RVs on the market and will virtually work with any budget.
  • Much easier set up than tent camping. Most Keystone models include an electric tongue jack, electric stabilizer jack or auto-leveling, and an electric awning.
  • Safer than tent camping due to lockable doors and storage.
  • The ability to detach your tow vehicle and drive around as normal when your travel trailer is set up.
  • From small to large bunkhouses, couples coaches, front to rear kitchens, and king to queen beds, there is a floorplan for everyone and all styles of camping.
  • You get to enjoy some of the fifth wheel features at a fraction of the fifth wheel cost. Keystone exclusives like KeyTV™, Blade™ High-Performance Air Flow System, 12V Color-Coded Wiring, Tru-Fit™ Slide Construction, and SolarFlex™ are just a few of the perks that come in most Keystone travel trailers.

Best Travel Trailers – Complete Buyer’s Guide

Also referred to as towable RVs, travel trailers offer you the comfort of your home while you are on the road. However, choosing the best travel trailer for yourself from a variety of thousands can be difficult.

They're perfect for a trip to the beach, mountains, or just to get away from the city and chill in an RV park. Whatever the reason, a travel trailer will be one of the best decisions you can make for your family’s enjoyment.

Travel trailers differ from motorhomes in that they're towable. However, they're similar design to 5th wheels , and although they're not as luxurious, they can be as spacious as and much cheaper than fifth wheels .

Today, there are so many types of trailers, so you need to be careful when looking to buy one. There are a number of things to consider, and it's always a good idea to rent the model you intend to buy beforehand.

That said, to help you select the best travel trailer for your next road trip, this article will be of great help. You will also find a helpful buying guide below to further assist you in decision making.

What is a Travel Trailer?

A travel trailer acts as a towable unit that consists of solid walls, along with other features such as kitchens, living rooms, and plenty of storage and cupboards.

The purpose of a travel trailer is to offer homey comfort to you when you are on the road. Compared to other RVs such as 5th wheels , travel trailers are smaller in size but offer very similar designs and features.

travel trailer being towed

  • Radius entry door
  • Full LED lighting interior
  • Rooms have electric slide doors
  • Comes with solar panel and Wi-Fi prep
  • Exterior is made with high-grade aluminum
  • Number of Floorplans: 17
  • Length: 22 to 30 feet

If you are a little tight on the budget, but still don’t want to compromise on your comfort during the traveling experience, then the Shasta travel trailers are your best pick.

These trailers are all affordable and also more lightweight and well-built. They feature well-lit interiors and exteriors, with the exterior being built with high-grade aluminum to ensure longevity.

Also, the trailers feature back-up camera prep, along with Wi-Fi options and solar panel prep as well. The entry doors are the most distinctive feature of these trailers since the radial entrance with a protective screen makes it stand out.

Extra features that further make this the best choice include safety features, including smoke detector, LP leak detector, and fire extinguisher.

How Long Do Travel Trailers Last?

A good, reliable travel trailer will last somewhere between 10 and 12 years, but it depends on how often you use it and how well you look after it.

What Does GVWR Mean on a Travel Trailer?

GVWR stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating . This is the maximum weight that the trailer can take while operating. This weight will also include the trailer’s own components, such as wheels.

Should You Cover Your Travel Trailer?

If you are traveling to an area with lots of rain or unpredictable weather, it is advised to cover it with various types of covers found on the market. These will protect it from the harsh elements of nature, including rain, snow and strong sunshine.

The Best Travel Trailers - Perfect Companions for Road Trips

So, there you have it: the best travel railers. It's important to note, however, that there are many different travel trailer sizes and designs that suit different people.

Overall, if you are searching for a travel trailer, you will have to make several considerations before you can make the final choice. The best trailer is the one that meets your needs, gives you comfort on your traveling days, and does not require lots of maintenance.

All of the above are recommended, but don't let this be your final stop. it's essential that you get the right one, because you'll hopefully be spending a lot of time in yours. Whichever trailer you go for, however, we're sure you've made the right decision and will start making many amazing memories. Happy camping!

R&D HITS THE ROAD

We are living the RV lifestyle alongside you by hitting the road in one of the Model Z prototypes long before production starts. These real-world adventures help us refine our RVs based on our own camping experiences while gathering direct feedback from other campers!

The first prototype of the Model Z, the 3100, took its maiden voyage across the country on a 30-day road trip by, owner and lead product designer, Micah Staley. With his family in tow, he sought out customer feedback by stopping at campgrounds across the country. Micah returned home with over 250 refinements to perfect Model Z’s design, functionality, and durability, and that was just the first of four Model Z prototypes.

We can’t wait to show you the result!

IN THEIR WORDS

What our customers are saying.

The enthusiasm and excitement they all share in the Brinkley company itself validated that we made the right choice. We feel certain that the people representing Brinkley are a reflection of the owners which represents a quality company!

Read The Complete Testimonial (Facebook)

We discovered the Brinkley Z3100 at the Montreal RV show. It was an instant crush due to the quantity of materials used and the incomparable finish of the Brinkley. This is by far the best value for money in the industry. We are delighted with our acquisition.

Google Review

If you haven’t heard of a Brinkley – I am certain you will very soon because they are getting ready to knock the socks off of every other RV company there is.

This rig (Model Z 3100) is sleek and sophisticated looking with exceptional craftsmanship, and it was a happy surprise that it was even better in person. I can’t say enough about the people at Brinkley, they’re fantastic on every level. It’s incredible to have the opportunity to meet the owners of a fantastic new company and all the people making it happen.

Watch our Video

Excellent design, build and customer commitment. Everything a luxury mid-profile coach should be. Many upgrades and special touches to make any trip more comfortable and relaxing.

We’ve toured hundreds of RVs through the years, and this was the first that literally took our breath away. We can’t wait to take delivery and then get it out on the road!

We don’t want to feel like we’re in a camper, and this (Model Z 3100) feels very residential, and that’s why I’m loving the Brinkley.

I recently stopped by their facility. And I saw their new unit. It looks great, they’re hitting the details people are looking for.

This new company and rig (Z3100) exceeded our expectations and then some… so we decided to buy it from Walnut Ridge in Indiana. The videos (Josh and others) were great, but experiencing it in person was simply amazing.

Every single experience with Brinkley has been phenomenal. The Z3100 is built with quality and durability from the floors to the cabinets and all the way to the roof. No small detail has been left out, and we love that the owners listen to the customer’s ideas. But – the best part is the people who are Brinkley.

I don’t know other executives at companies that RV… It shows in the quality and all the little things that we see, including the fit and finish on everything…

Just ordered the Brinkley 3100 Model Z. Couldn’t be more pleased with the coach design, finishes, and craftsmanship. The company is proud of the product and stands behind it should there be any concerns.

Facebook Review

Spectacular unit/manufacturer, really raising the bar for others in the industry. Super excited to see what this brand does!

I have worked on many RV’s and none have been as well built and well organized as the Brinkley Model Z. The electrical system is set up to be easy to customize for the individual owner’s needs. Access to wiring and wire routing is straightforward and neat. Well Done, Brinkley.

RECREATING THE RV EXPERIENCE FOR DEALERS AND CUSTOMERS

RV experience and reputation, along with youthful enthusiasm, have all come together to form Brinkley RV. We are recreating the manufacturing/workforce discipline, the supplier/team relationship, and the selling/support experience. We are relentlessly dedicated to our customers’ satisfaction.

WHY BRINKLEY?

Built on trust.

We are focused on the relentless pursuit of the ultimate customer experience. Our ownership team is comprised of some of the most experienced RV veterans; many of which have spent the past 20 years building the most successful brands and companies within the industry. With five equal partners, we have the unique ability to have an owner touching every part of our business, every day.

We hope you will put your full trust in us and join us on this journey as we recreate and revolutionize your camping experience!

INDUSTRY-LEADING DESIGN

Due to the industry’s noticeable shift in focus away from customer experience and product design, Brinkley RV owners saw a unique opportunity to recreate the RV experience for dealers and customers. We pay exceptional attention to detail, and our mission is to provide you with products and support that help create the memories you can cherish for a lifetime.

Every Brinkley RV is designed by an industry-leading expert who loses sleep over making your experience memorable.

Our promise to you is two-fold:

  • We listen to your feedback when developing floorplans; we implement new features and cutting-edge technologies to meet your needs.
  • We also pledge to live the lifestyle right alongside you and tweak the product based off our own camping experiences.

FOCUSED ON CUSTOMER CARE

As a privately held company, we have the competitive advantage to avoid “publicly held” distractions so we can focus on the details. This allows us to stay closely connected to our customers, our employees, and our products.

We embody an exceptional customer experience; it is ingrained in the fabric of who we are. We have enhanced quality inspections and audits throughout our production line and a robust pre-delivery inspection (PDI) process. This way we can ensure that your Brinkley RV is built right the first time and with the utmost quality.

But we are human, and sometimes mistakes happen. When challenges present themselves, Brinkley RV’s Customer Care Team will go above and beyond to ensure the necessary repairs are completed as efficiently as possible to get you back on the road.

FINEST DEALER FRIENDS IN NORTH AMERICA

Our dealers are an extension of Brinkley RV, and we believe we have partnered with the absolute best in North America! We pledge to make the dealer experience seamless from purchasing units, managing real-time inventory control, and shipment tracking to serviceability, priority service and enhanced product training.

We want our dealers free to focus on serving their customers and encouraging them to become Brinkley RV owners for life.

We believe we are on the brink of something BIG!

“I’m a firm believer in you get what you pay for and the ATC toy hauler was the highest quality product I could find…it has material that will not rot, has options for configurable furniture, and you can put a ton of weight on that thing.” – Josh, Texas

“I fancy myself a builder and, one day, I sat down to design my perfect trailer. But thank God I found ATC because they had already built it!” – Randy V., Oklahoma

“We offgrid 99.99% of the time, so the integrated solar and large water tanks are huge for us. Overall, it’s a big step-up from what we had before and I also believe it will be the last toy hauler we buy.” – Tom U, Minnesota
