It is one of the most popular choices for auto coverage in the nation. However, there are insurers that can offer more affordable rates and have better customer service reputations.

Travelers Insurance Rating

Below is a breakdown of our overall Travelers insurance rating of 4.5 out of 5.0 stars and each category that makes up our review team’s ratings. The final score of 4.5 was aggregated from Travelers’ performance across four main areas: cost, coverage, reliability, and claims service:

The overall score was determined by using the same methodology our review team uses to deliver unbiased assessments of auto insurance companies.

To outline some of the main reasons we gave this rating, below are detailed pros and cons surrounding Travelers insurance:

Travelers Auto Insurance Rates

Compared to the national average, Travelers auto insurance rates are 7% cheaper according to our estimates. Travelers’ auto insurance reviews mention that customers are pleased with the affordable rates they receive from the company. Travelers overall is not an expensive option compared to other companies, but insurance providers like Geico and USSA  are usually cheaper on average. It’s also important to note that these rates are just estimates and your car insurance costs could be higher or lower.

In our January 2022 car insurance survey, we polled 1,000 respondents and asked them if they had ever experienced a rate increase without an obvious cause (like an accident or ticket) from their car insurance provider. Additionally, we found that around 40 people had a Travelers car insurance policy. Over 20 respondents with a Travelers car insurance policy reported they had never had a rate increase without an obvious cause. With this in mind, below we have listed what Travelers looks at when determining your insurance rates.

The factors that affect your Travelers car insurance costs include:

  • Marital status
  • Driving experience
  • Driving record
  • Credit history

In the next section, we will go into more detail about what your Travelers auto insurance costs will look like in states where it is offered.

Travelers Rental Car Insurance

Travelers offers rental car insurance as standard through your auto insurance policy and through their rental car reimbursement program. If you enroll in rental car reimbursement, Travelers will pay a fixed amount per day toward the cost of your rental, up to a maximum per-claim limit. Their rental reimbursement coverage costs between $2 to $15 on average, but rates may differ. If you do not enroll, coverage on your rental car will be limited by the same terms in your personal policy.

Travelers Usage-Based Insurance

Drivers in select states can choose to take part in Travelers’ usage-based insurance program IntelliDrive ® . The 90-day program uses a smartphone app to capture data and score how safely you drive based on your driving habits. You can earn discounts on your policy simply by enrolling in the program. When you renew your auto insurance policy, the data can lead to extra savings or an increased premium depending on your driving behaviors.

How to Cancel Travelers Auto Insurance

You can cancel your auto insurance policy through three different methods including calling a representative at 800-842-5075, writing a letter to (Travelers P.O. Box 5600 Hartford, CT 06102), or going to a local Travelers office. Before pursuing any of these options make sure you have your name, Travelers policy number, the cancellation date of your policy, and details for your replacement policy. Travelers do not have a cancellation fee so you can feel free to cancel a policy at any time.

Travelers offers a mobile app for drivers on the App Store and Google Play. You can use the Travelers Mobile app to pay insurance costs, track roadside assistance, file a claim and check its status, download auto insurance ID cards, and access your agent’s contact information.

The Travelers Mobile app currently has a 4.7-star rating out of 5.0 on the App Store from over 26,000 reviews. It also has a 3.3-star rating out of 5.0 on Google Play. Many customers are pleased with how easy and convenient it is to use, though some report issues with the payment process through the app.

Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating : A BBB complaints in last three years : 472 J.D. Power customer satisfaction index : 861 / 1,000

Travelers has a positive insurance industry reputation, especially when it comes to the company’s quotes and claims processes. The company scored 860 out of 1,000 points and is ranked sixth in the largest insurers category in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study SM . Travelers also holds an A++ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best, which shows its ability to pay out claims on time.

While Travelers holds an A rating from the BBB, it also has a 1.1-star rating out of 5.0 from customer reviews on the site and has closed over 450 complaints in the past three years. Though negative reviews may seem like a cause for concern, it’s normal for a company of this size to have a low rating and many negative reviews. Overall, these represent a relatively small number of Travelers insurance policyholders.

Positive Travelers Insurance Reviews

Positive Travelers insurance reviews praise the company for its affordable coverage and excellent customer service.

“[I’ve] been with Travelers for probably 30 years for auto insurance. [I] have made three claims for totaled cars. They have been excellent to deal with, responsive, informative, and fair. So far, I’m very happy with them.” – David A. via BBB “Great coverage and great prices.” – Donald W. via BBB

Travelers Insurance Complaints

Travelers insurance complaints highlight issues with the company paying out insurance claims to drivers after accidents.

“I’m absolutely disgusted with Travelers. They are unethical complete liars [and] they will say anything not to pay a claim. Let this be your warning. Do not use this company for anything.” – Casey B. via BBB “[They] barely even try. [They] stated I was in the lane and out of my spot when they backed into my car, yet somehow I’m the one at fault. Worst vehicle insurance possible.” – Alecia C. via BBB

Travelers IntelliDrive Reviews

The Travelers IntelliDrive app has high ratings, especially compared to other companies’ usage-based insurance apps. It has a 4.1-star rating out of 5.0 on Google Play and a 4.5-star rating out of 5.0 on the App Store, and users report that it works well.

In our review, we rate Travelers insurance a 4.5 out of 5.0 stars for its many discount options and stellar customer service. Travelers offers plenty of insurance coverage options and incentives for students and new drivers. Coverage costs are also cheaper on average for its insurance policies, but availability is limited.

While Travelers insurance is a good option for many drivers, we recommend reaching out to other companies before signing a contract. This will allow you to shop around for car insurance quotes to find the best deal and coverage for your situation.

Travelers Auto Insurance Competitors: Top Providers

How We Rate Insurers

Our review process aims to deliver consistent and unbiased assessments of car insurance providers. While there are multiple qualities that make a car insurance company successful, our review team focuses on those we believe are the most important for consumers:

  • Cost : Cost can be difficult to compare between insurers because so many factors impact annual premiums. The cheapest insurer for one driver may not be the cheapest for another. To determine our cost score, we look at insurance rate estimates generated by Quadrant Information Services, discount opportunities, and consumer reports.
  • Coverage : To determine our coverage score, we look at the number of coverage options available as well as coverage limits and deductible options. Our ratings also take into account additional services and benefits like roadside assistance.
  • Reliability : It’s important that an auto insurer is able to meet its claims obligations. Companies with a strong financial strength rating from AM Best score best in this category. Established insurers with a long history of reliable service also receive positive marks.
  • Service : We comb through customer reviews on sites like the BBB to learn about customer experiences. Insurers with a low volume of complaints score well in this area. We also consider the claims process, giving higher ratings to car insurance providers that offer easy-to-use claims apps.

Travelers

  • Large range of discounts
  • Great price for coverage
  • Accident forgiveness add-on
  • Gap insurance
  • Many insurance products
  • Low number of complaints nationally
  • Strong financial strength rating from AM Best
  • Low customer satisfaction scores
  • Not available in all states

The latest  Consumer Price Index report  showed that prices are rising for car insurance. If rising prices are eating into your budget, it may be time to find a budget-friendly auto insurance provider that can help  ease some of inflation’s sting .

Whether you’re adding a  teen driver  to your policy or grabbing car coverage with a clean driving record, Travelers offers auto insurance rates that are hundreds below the national average. That makes it an attractive option as  prices continue to rise  in the US thanks to inflation. But how does quality hold up in light of those cheap rates? That’s what we’re here to answer.

One of the largest insurers in the US, Travelers is a carrier that’s been around for more than 165 years. With that much experience, Travelers is a giant in the insurance business, with a robust list of  car insurance coverage options  to prove it. Travelers auto insurance is available in 42 states plus Washington, DC, and it offers a great list of coverage at  affordable prices . Moreover, the carrier has an extensive repertoire of insurance products that make the company a viable option beyond car insurance, including  pet , jewelry and  travel insurance .

That said, the carrier does raise a couple of red flags when it comes to customer care. Ultimately, deciding if Travelers car insurance is right for you is about the balance between quality and price.

Here’s our review of Travelers car insurance for 2022.

Answer a few questions to see personalized rates from top carriers.

Travelers is a budget-friendly option for car insurance. Signing up for a Travelers policy can save you hundreds, which is especially important as  gas prices soar  in an economy that may be  headed into a recession . Not only are premiums low compared with the national average, but a robust list of discounts can help bring your overall costs down even further.

And these low prices don’t mean you’ll skimp on coverage. Travelers has a large list of coverage options you can pick from, including some that can’t be found with other insurers, like gap insurance, rideshare coverage (only in Colorado and Illinois) and an accident forgiveness add-on.

Travelers doesn’t service every state in the US. If you’re in Alaska, Louisiana, Michigan, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming, Hawaii or North Dakota, you won’t be able to purchase a Travelers policy.

Customers who do buy Travelers policies seem typically underwhelmed with the service they receive, according to J.D. Power surveys. Whether it’s overall satisfaction, digital service experience or satisfaction with the auto claims process, Travelers receives lower numbers than the industry average.

Whether you’re purchasing a full coverage policy with all the bells and whistles or a minimum coverage policy, Travelers can likely save you money. On average, a Travelers premium for full coverage is $1,447, or $324 less than the national average, according to  Bankrate . Tack on a lengthy list of discounts you may qualify for, and you’re likely to keep some extra money in your pocket while you drive. Likewise, you can save money with Travelers when purchasing minimum coverage -- just the amount required to legally drive in your state – though we recommend  opting for more coverage  when possible. Travelers’ average annual premium for minimum coverage is $477. That’s $68 less than the national average, which sits at $545.

Travelers offers just about every major coverage type you might need for an auto policy. Here are some of them:

  • Bodily injury liability protection : This coverage pays for injuries to others that were caused by the policyholder or by additional drivers listed on the policy. Bodily injury liability protection is  required  in most states.
  • Property damage liability protection : This coverage pays for damage that policyholders cause to another’s property. Most prominently, this applies to other cars, but it can also include other personal property like fences or mailboxes. Property damage liability is  required  in most US states.
  • Personal injury protection : This coverage pays for the medical costs and lost wages of the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car if injury occurs, up to the policy’s limits, regardless of fault. PIP may also include coverage for funeral expenses and essential services, like childcare or dog-walking, that you may be unable to perform due to physical injuries. PIP is  required  in 14 states.
  • Uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage : This coverage pays for medical expenses for yourself and any passengers up to the policy’s limits, when an uninsured or underinsured motorist causes an accident. Insurance carriers are  required to offer  this coverage in all states, but the consumer may have the  option  to decline the coverage. Uninsured motorist property damage is available in some states to help cover repairs to your vehicle if damaged by an uninsured driver. Several states even require this coverage as part of the state’s minimum insurance requirements to drive.
  • Medical payments : Similar to PIP coverage, medical payments help cover the medical costs of the policyholder and their passengers up to the policy limit, regardless of fault. However, unlike PIP, medical payments coverage does not cover lost wages or essential services. Med Pay is  optional  coverage in most states, but  required  in a few states.
  • Collision coverage : This coverage pays for damage to your vehicle in an accident resulting from a collision between your car and another car or object.
  • Comprehensive coverage : This coverage pays for damage to your car caused by an event other than collision. This includes theft, fire, flood, hail, vandalism and more.
  • Gap coverage : Gap coverage helps you pay in the event an accident leaves your car totaled, covering the difference between your vehicle’s market value and the amount you owe on it.
  • Roadside assistance : Roadside assistance coverage helps you if you’re stranded because of car trouble (for example, a flat tire or a dead battery).
  • Rideshare coverage : Only available in Colorado and Illinois for Travelers customers. This coverage is essential if you’re working for rideshare companies such as Uber or Lyft. In fact, your personal auto policy probably won’t cover you while you’re driving for a rideshare company, meaning you  must  purchase this coverage to be protected. Though rideshare companies have insurance policies that cover you partially, there are gaps that could leave you without insurance protection. That’s where rideshare coverage comes in. For example, if your rideshare app is on but you have not yet picked up a passenger,  your rideshare company’s insurance policy will typically only include bodily injury and property damage liability insurance. It’s not until you pick up a passenger that services like Uber and Lyft will pick up the tab for damage done to your car. But with rideshare insurance, you’ll be covered the entire time you work.
  • Accident forgiveness : This feature is part of Travelers’ Responsible Driver Plan. It forgives one accident and a minor traffic violation every three years.

Travelers offers a robust list of discounts that can slash your premiums. Here are a few notable ones:

  • Home ownership
  • Safe driver
  • Continuous insurance
  • Hybrid/Electric Car
  • Early quote
  • Good student
  • Student away at school
  • Driver training

While the price tag comes cheap, customers aren’t particularly satisfied with Travelers’ car insurance services. Travelers scored lower than the industry average on auto claims satisfaction, according to  another J.D. Power survey . Travelers scored 871 out of 1,000, compared with an industry average of 880. Lastly, Travelers is toward the tail end in  J.D. Power’s digital service experience survey , scoring 674 out of 1,000, compared with a segment average of 705.

However, Travelers fares better when it comes to national complaints. For its auto insurance product line, Travelers also receives fewer complaints than the industry average, according to the  National Association of Insurance Commissioners’s complaint index . The carrier is indexed at 1.50 compared with a 1.00 industry average. (A 2.00 index would mean a company gets twice the complaints.)

Travelers’ telematics program is called IntelliDrive. It’s a 90-day program that uses your smartphone and an app to track your driving habits, including the time of day you drive, speed, acceleration and braking. It also tracks “distractions,” meaning it checks if you’re answering calls, texting or interacting with your phone while driving. By enrolling in this program, you can score an initial discount, and at your next renewal, you may be rewarded for safe driving with up to 30% discount off your policy.

Like many other carriers, Travelers doesn’t just offer car insurance. And it offers  much  more than your typical national insurance provider. From boat, home, renters and condo insurance to pet, jewelry, travel and wedding insurance, Travelers really has it all, making it an easy one-stop-shop for anything you may need to insure.

CNET reviews insurance carriers and products by exhaustively comparing them across set criteria. For auto insurance, we examine average annual premium rates for full coverage, consumer complaints, collision repair scores, the carrier’s financial strength, auto claims satisfaction and overall customer satisfaction. Our data comes from a multitude of sources.

Auto insurance rates come from  Bankrate , which gathers data using Quadrant Information Services. We also use both J.D. Power annual surveys that collect data on customer auto claims satisfaction and overall customer satisfaction.

Consumer complaints are taken from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which collects consumer complaints across states, indexing complaints on a scale that takes into account the industry average. We collect the financial strength rating of each carrier from the A.M. Best Rating. Lastly, we collected collision repair scores from the Crash Network Insurer Report Card, which collects data from collision repair professionals, including mechanics, to gauge the quality of collision claims service from insurance carriers.

Travelers car insurance reviews

Travelers has the lowest consumer complaint ratio among the top-scoring car insurance companies in our rating of the best car insurance companies , according to the most recent NAIC data. The reasons for NAIC complaints can vary, but complaints about Travelers car insurance were primarily about delays and unsatisfactory settlements or offers.

Travelers gets a C grade on the annual CRASH Network Insurer Report Card. The CRASH Network grade is based on survey responses from more than 1,000 collision repair professionals, with survey questions covering a variety of key topics, such as quality of repairs, claims handling policies and an insurer’s attitude and payment practices.

If you’re considering Travelers insurance, compare car insurance quotes from at least two other insurers as well. You can also read professional Travelers car insurance reviews online and ask friends and family if they have any experience with the insurer.

Methodology

Our insurance experts evaluated top car insurance companies in the nation to determine which offers the best-rated auto insurance based on average rates, coverage features, collision claims process and consumer complaints.

Each car insurance company was eligible for up to 100 points, based on its performance in the following key categories:

Cost: 50 points. We analyzed rates from Quadrant Information Services based on seven driver profiles for a policy with 100/300/100 in liability coverage, uninsured motorist coverage and comprehensive and collision coverage.

We awarded up to 50 points based on insurers’ average rates for:

  • Drivers in various age groups.
  • Drivers with bad credit.
  • Good drivers.
  • Drivers with infractions, such as speeding tickets, an accident or a DUI on their record.

Up to 10 bonus points were available for insurers that had low rates for teen and senior drivers, two demographics that typically have higher car insurance rates.

Consumer complaints: 20 points. We collected complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), which shows the volume of car insurance consumer complaints against each company. When a consumer lodges a complaint to their state’s department of insurance — often about an insurance company’s claims process, delays, denials or settlements — these complaints are logged and tracked.

Car insurance coverage options and features: 20 points. Car insurance policy features can help make coverage more affordable both before and after an accident or covered incident. We evaluated car insurance policies offered by each insurer and awarded points to insurers that offered these valuable options and features:

  • Accident forgiveness (5 points).
  • New car replacement (5 points).
  • Vanishing deductible (5 points).
  • Usage-based car insurance program (5 points).

Collision repairs score: 10 points. Every year the CRASH Network releases an “Insurer Report Card” survey. This annual survey asks repair professionals how well a car insurance company handles claims, specifically when it comes to payment practices, repair quality and customer service.

Each car insurance company receives a grade ranging from A+ to F, based on the survey results. Companies were awarded up to 10 points based on their CRASH Network score, with higher grades receiving the most points.

Additional replacement cost coverage. This provides extra funds if your home is destroyed and the cost to rebuild it is more than your dwelling coverage limit.

Extra coverage for jewelry and valuables. You can raise your coverage limits for certain valuable items or put them on a separate policy if the standard homeowners policy doesn’t provide sufficient coverage.

Travelers vs. competitors

Travelers vs. allstate home insurance.

Travelers and Allstate are two of the biggest insurers in the U.S. and offer a range of coverage options for homeowners. One difference between them is that Travelers draws fewer consumer complaints to state regulators than expected for a company of its size, while Allstate draws more. That suggests Travelers may have an edge when it comes to keeping its policyholders happy.

Both companies have websites with lots of useful self-service features, including online quotes, payments and claim filing. But Allstate and Travelers also have agents who can offer more personalized service if you need it.

Learn more in our Allstate home insurance review .

Travelers vs. Geico home insurance

The primary difference between Travelers and Geico home insurance is that Travelers sells its own policies while Geico works with third parties. If you call a Geico agent or visit its website for a quote, the company will match you with another insurance provider to get coverage. If you need to file a claim, you’ll have to contact the other insurer.

Travelers and Geico offer a discount if you bundle home and auto insurance. You may also be able to save with either company if you have certain safety or security devices in your home. But Geico’s discount and coverage options may vary based on which insurer the company pairs you with.

Homeowners insurance star ratings methodology

NerdWallet’s homeowners insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, coverage, discounts and online experience. These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our full ratings methodology for home insurance.

Insurer complaints methodology

NerdWallet examined complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2020-2022. To assess how insurers compare to one another, the NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or share of total premiums in the industry. To evaluate a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by market shares of each subsidiary, over the three-year period. NerdWallet conducts its data analysis and reaches conclusions independently and without the endorsement of the NAIC. Ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condo) and life insurance.

Homeowners insurance rates methodology

NerdWallet calculated median rates for 40-year-old homeowners from various insurance companies in every ZIP code across the U.S. All rates are rounded to the nearest $5.

Sample homeowners were nonsmokers with good credit living in a single-family, two-story home built in 1984. They had a $1,000 deductible and the following coverage limits:

$300,000 in dwelling coverage.

$30,000 in other structures coverage.

$150,000 in personal property coverage.

$60,000 in loss of use coverage.

$300,000 in liability coverage.

$1,000 in medical payments coverage.

We made minor changes to the sample policy in cases where rates for the above coverage limits or deductibles weren’t available.

These are sample rates generated through Quadrant Information Services. Your own rates will be different.

Travelers Insurance Review

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

Travelers Insurance has a wide range of coverage options to allow you to customize a policy to your specific needs, plus relatively low rates. But how does Travelers compare to other car insurers—and should you put it on your shortlist?

TIME’s Take

Compared with the national average, Travelers’s rates are slightly lower, especially if you have poor credit or a driving violation. What’s more, the company has a “Superior” rating from AM Best, which speaks to its financial strength. But low scores from J.D. Power for claim satisfaction and insurance shopping may be off-putting to some.

Pros and cons

How do travelers’s car insurance rates compare.

Travelers’s car insurance rates are not the highest of its competitors, but they’re also not the lowest. When compared to the national average, Travelers's average annual rate is 12% less.

Travelers’s rates are slightly higher overall than competitors State Farm and Geico, but much lower than Allstate’s rates. What’s more, drivers who have been in an accident or convicted of a DUI may find Travelers’s pricing more forgiving than that of other insurance companies. As with all insurers, the exact rate you’ll pay will depend on several different factors.

The table below lists the average annual rates for Travelers, Allstate, State Farm, and Geico based on the type of coverage chosen, the customer’s credit score and age, and the existence of any traffic violations on the driver’s record.

By coverage

By credit score, by age group, by violation.

Source: Data from Quadrant via USA Today

How much is Travelers car insurance?

The exact cost of Travelers car insurance will depend on several factors. These factors include the type of coverage chosen, the driver’s age and credit score, and any history of traffic violations.

Coverage type

Every state requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to be able to drive legally. Minimum requirements vary among states, so it’s wise to check with your local department of motor vehicles to determine the type and amount of coverage you’ll need. Travelers customers pay an average of $1,273 per year for minimum coverage and an average of $1,437 per year for full coverage, which could include comprehensive, collision, uninsured or underinsured motorist, and bodily injury coverage.

Credit score

Your credit score impacts much of your financial life, and insurance is no exception. In general, you can expect to pay a lower premium if your credit score falls in the “good” or “excellent” range, and a higher premium for a “poor” or “fair” credit score. Travelers has an average annual rate of $2,361 for customers with poor and fair credit scores.

Car insurance premiums tend to be the highest for young drivers, with rates generally decreasing when you reach the 25-to-30 age range. Travelers’s rates reflect this pattern, with teen drivers paying an average of $4,704 and adult drivers paying an average of $1,392.

Traffic violation

If your driving record is clean, you’ll enjoy lower insurance premiums. But if you have a speeding ticket, accident, or DUI on your record, you can expect to pay more for car insurance. Travelers has an average annual rate of $1,355 for drivers with clean records, $1,785 for drivers with one speeding ticket on their record, $1,890 for drivers who have been involved in an accident, and $2,143 for drivers with one DUI.

Travelers auto insurance discounts

Like most insurance providers, Travelers offers several discounts to help decrease the cost of coverage for customers. The most common discounts are as follows:

Multi-policy discount

Bundling is a common way to lower your insurance premiums. Travelers offers a multi-policy discount which can help you save up to 13% on your car insurance premiums by bundling your auto policy with homeowners or condo insurance. You may also be able to bundle other types of coverage to enjoy a multi-policy discount.

Multi-car discount

If you own more than one car, you may be eligible for a discount with Travelers insurance. The multi-car discount is available for households that insure two or more vehicles under the same policy.

Homeownership discount

While bundling is the best way to get a discount, Travelers also offers a homeownership discount to those who insure their homes or condos with another insurer—though the discount isn’t likely to be as extensive as it would be when bundling home and car insurance under the same provider.

Safe driver discount

If you drive safely and keep a clean driving record, you may be eligible for the Travelers safe driver discount. To qualify, you must have no accidents, no violations, and no major comprehensive claims on your policy for three to five years.

Continuous insurance discount

Travelers rewards long-time customers with the continuous insurance discount. If you’ve held car insurance policies with Travelers continuously, with no gaps in coverage, you may be able to get this discount to lower your premiums.

Hybrid or electric car discount

Leasing or purchasing an eco-friendly car could get you an additional discount. Travelers offers a hybrid/electric car discount for customers who commit to being environmentally friendly drivers by purchasing an alternative fuel vehicle.

New car discount

Travelers’ new car discount is applicable for vehicles that are less than three years old. This discount applies to current customers who purchase a new car or new customers whose existing vehicle is less than three years old.

EFT, pay in full, and good payer discounts

There are several ways to save on car insurance by how you choose to pay your premiums. First, you may be offered a discount by paying your annual Travelers auto premium in full rather than in monthly installments. You can also qualify for a discount if you pay with electronic funds transfer (EFT) or if you consistently pay your premiums early or on time.

Early quote discount

The early quote discount applies to new Travelers customers. If you get a car insurance quote before your policy with your existing insurer expires, you could be eligible for a discount if you switch.

Good student discount

If you have a driver on your policy who is enrolled in high school or college full time, they can get a discount on their Travelers insurance premiums by maintaining at least a B average.

Student-away-at-school discount

When your child leaves for college, you might want to keep them as a named driver on your policy for when they’re visiting home, but they likely won’t be driving the car during term time. In this case, you could get a student-away-at-school discount, which Travelers has in place for customers with dependents who go to school at least 100 miles away from home.

Driver training discount

Young drivers are at a much higher risk for getting in a car accident. Drivers who enroll in driver education courses to hone their driving skills could be eligible for a driver training discount with Travelers.

More about Travelers auto insurance

Still not sure whether Travelers Insurance is the right choice for your auto insurance coverage? Here’s more about Travelers to see if it’s worth considering or if you should go with another insurance provider for your auto policy .

Who is eligible for Travelers car insurance?

Any driver with a license is eligible to apply for coverage with Travelers, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be the best choice for all drivers or that all drivers will be approved for coverage.

As noted earlier, drivers who have a speeding ticket or DUI on their record may find cheaper rates with Travelers than with other insurance providers. In addition, those with poor credit scores may find that they pay lower premiums with Travelers than with its competitors.

Travelers Insurance has a good reputation in the insurance industry. Not only are its rates competitive (and, in some cases, lower than its competitors), Travelers also has a decent reputation when it comes to customer service.

One of the most important factors to consider when shopping for auto insurance is whether or not your chosen provider will be able to pay out claims as promised. AM Best, a global credit agency that specializes in the insurance industry, reviews the financial health of insurance companies and rates them based on their financial strength, which translates to their ability to pay claims. Travelers Insurance has an AM Best rating of A++, or “Superior,” which speaks to the strength of its strong operating performance. This rating can provide customers with additional peace of mind when choosing Travelers for their insurance needs.

Travelers also has below-average customer complaints to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)—63% fewer auto insurance complaints, to be exact—which is reassuring to potential customers. However, in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Travelers was rated below industry average at 854 out of 1,000 (the industry average being 873 out of 1,000), which could raise red flags for some. Similarly, Travelers came in last place in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study with 853 out of 1,000 (compared to a segment average of 863 out of 1,000).

At the end of the day, if you can find a good deal on auto insurance with Travelers, you might be able to overlook the red flags. But it’s wise to gather additional quotes from competing insurers before making a decision either way.

Other Travelers Insurance services

In addition to car insurance, Travelers offers the following insurance products:

  • Boat and yacht insurance.
  • Condo insurance.
  • Flood insurance.
  • Homeowners insurance.
  • Landlord insurance.
  • Motorcycle insurance.
  • Pet insurance.
  • Renters insurance.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Umbrella insurance.
  • Valuable items insurance.
  • Wedding and event insurance.

Travelers also offers business insurance coverage, including general liability, commercial auto and trucking, inland marine, property, workers compensation, and surety bonds.

Which states does Travelers Insurance cover?

Travelers Insurance covers a wide swath of the United States, from California to Georgia and beyond. It offers coverage in 42 states, plus Washington, D.C. If you live outside Travelers’s coverage area, you’ll need to look elsewhere for car insurance coverage. States where coverage is not available include Alaska, Hawaii, Louisiana, Michigan, North and South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Which other insurers should you consider?

In addition to Travelers and the competitors listed above (Allstate, State Farm, and Geico), it’s worth considering Liberty Mutual for your car insurance needs. Not only does Liberty offer discounts for homeownership and good grades, it also provides a military discount that can help reduce insurance costs for active, retired, or reserve members of one of the U.S. Armed Forces branches. Liberty Mutual also has a program called RightTrack, which tracks your driving behavior and could earn you up to 30% off your premiums.

Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual Auto Insurance

Pros & cons:.

  • Wide selection of coverage options and discounts
  • Better pricing than competitors in multiple categories
  • Potential 30% discount by participating in its RightTrack UBI program
  • A.M. Best A rating for financial strength
  • Some states do not appear to be served by an agent
  • Middling claims and customer service ratings

Other options include American Family, Nationwide, Farmers, Progressive, and USAA (for military members). It’s a good idea to request quotes from several providers before choosing who to go with as your car insurance company.

Bottom line

If you’re looking for a car insurance provider, Travelers is well worth considering. Although exact rates will depend on your age, driving history, and the amount and type of coverage you want, you can expect lower-than-average premiums. In addition, Travelers has a long list of insurance discounts that can help lower your overall costs. In the end, it’s worth getting a quote from Travelers to see if it’s a good fit.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Is travelers good car insurance.

Overall, Travelers is a good option to consider for car insurance. While the company’s ratings by J.D. Power for claim satisfaction and insurance shopping are lower than average, it does have a “Superior” rating from AM Best and a lower-than-average number of NAIC complaints. Rates are also lower than average for many customers, though they may not be the lowest customers will find. About Travelers

Travelers review.

  • State Availability

Key Takeaways:

  • Travelers homeowners rates are among the lowest of every standard policy we sampled.
  • Discounts are available for new homebuyers, loss-free properties, bundling with another Travelers policy, protective device ownership, and LEED-certified homes. However, they fail to offer many common discounts, including auto-pay and customer loyalty.
  • AM Best gave Travelers their highest rating of A++ for superior financial strength.

One of the oldest and largest insurance providers in the U.S., Travelers has been in business for more than 165 years. With a total revenue of $35 billion and 30,000 employees, this Hartford, Connecticut-based insurer offers a full range of insurance products and is tied for No. 9 in our Best Homeowners Insurance Companies rating.

Travelers Home Insurance Details

  • #9 in  Best Homeowners Insurance Companies  (tie)
  • #2 in  Cheapest Homeowners Insurance Companies
  • #5 in  Best Home and Auto Insurance Bundles

Travelers offers a competitive assortment of standard and optional homeowners insurance policy coverages in all states except California and Florida. We found that homeowners insurance policy costs for our sample dwelling were cheaper with Travelers than with most other companies, edged out only by State Farm. Another plus is that the company is financially solid, with the highest rating of A++ from A.M. Best.

Its standard home insurance policy provides coverage for your dwelling, other structures on your property, personal belongings, personal liability, guest medical coverage, and loss-of-use coverage.

It has similar add-ons to other insurers in our rating such as coverage for valuable items, water backup, identity theft, and the option to add replacement cost to your policy. This would mean that when Travelers determines the value of items covered by your policy it wouldn’t take depreciation into account. It also offers a “green” coverage add-on that would help cover the cost to repair or replace items with eco-friendly or high-efficiency materials after a covered loss.

On the downside, Travelers doesn’t offer some of the more common discounts that other insurers in our rating do, with no reduction in rates for customer loyalty, opting for auto pay, or electronic document delivery. All of the above are offered by at least some competitors in our rating.

Travelers does offer multi-policy, or bundling, discounts for purchasing car or boat insurance along with a homeowners policy, but the savings for bundling are less than you’ll get with other insurers in our rating. Other available discounts include reduced rates for alarm systems, protective devices, and remaining claims-free.

Bottom Line:

Travelers offers cheaper home insurance rates than most competitors in our rating while offering similar coverage options, and is financially sound. But Travelers doesn’t offer some common discounts that some of the other insurance providers in our rating do.

What Homeowners Insurance Policies Does Travelers Offer?

A standard homeowners insurance policy with Travelers includes all the coverages typically found in any homeowners policy, including:

Loss of Use

Personal liability, guest medical coverage, dwelling coverage, other structures coverage.

Remember that homeowners Insurance policies normally have maximum reimbursement limits for each of the categories above. Most policies allow you to purchase additional coverage for a specific need. For example, if you have a lot of valuable jewelry, you might want to consider adding additional coverage for valuable items.

What Optional Homeowners Insurance Coverage Does Travelers Offer?

Travelers offers a large assortment of optional coverages, including the following:

  • Identity theft helps pay expenses incurred as a result of your identity and sensitive information being stolen and can provide assistance to restore your identity.
  • Jewelry and valuable items coverage is worth considering if your home contains a significant amount of jewelry or other valuables that might exceed the limits of a standard policy.
  • Contents replacement cost can be helpful, particularly if it has been a number of years since you purchased your policy. This optional coverage can reimburse you for the current replacement cost of personal property, rather than capping it at a preset amount.
  • Earthquake damage is not covered by a standard policy with Travelers, as is the case with most insurers. Consider optional earthquake coverage if you live in an area where this is a threat.
  • Flood insurance is not included with a standard policy, but may be required by your lender if you live in an area prone to flooding. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides flood insurance through various carriers at costs based on Federal Emergency Management Agency maps of high-risk flood areas. You can check these maps to see if you’re in a high-risk area.
  • Water backup coverage provides reimbursement for a failed sump pump or sewer line in your home and isn’t typically included with a standard policy.
  • Green improvement coverage provides funds to rebuild your home to a more efficient or earth-friendly standard after a loss, even if the cost of materials exceeds the limits of your standard policy.

What Doesn't Travelers Homeowners Insurance Cover?

Like most homeowners insurance companies, Travelers doesn’t include coverage for a flood or earthquake with a standard policy. Both are available as optional coverage with Travelers.

Standard policies also don’t include coverage for identity theft protection, valuable jewelry or collectibles, water damage from a failed sump pump or sewer, or rebuilding your home to be more energy efficient. All of these can be purchased for an additional cost.

How Much Is Travelers Homeowners Insurance?

Our study found that a standard homeowners policy with Travelers would cost $134.70 per month for our sample home, less than the average of all companies we looked at.

Our sample rate is based on homeowners insurance for a 2,400-square-foot, three-bedroom townhome located in Naperville, Illinois, valued at $450,000 and insured for $500,000.

What Homeowners Insurance Discounts Are Offered by Travelers?

Travelers offers many of the same discounts available with homeowners insurance policies from other companies, including:

  • Multi-policy. If you purchase your car insurance or another policy through Travelers in addition to your homeowners insurance policy, you could be entitled to a discount of up to 12%.
  • Protective device discount. You may be entitled to a discount on homeowners insurance if your home is equipped with smoke detectors, a home security system, a sprinkler system, or other approved device.
  • New home buyer. Buyers who have purchased a home within 12 months of purchasing a homeowners insurance policy may be eligible for a discount.
  • Green discount. Travelers offers a homeowners insurance discount of up to 5% for homes that have been Green Home certified by the Leadership Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) organization.
  • Claim-free. Homeowners who remain claim-free for a predetermined period of time may be eligible for a homeowners insurance discount.

How Do I Buy Travelers Homeowners Insurance?

Travelers sells homeowners insurance directly to customers and through a network of 13,500 independent agents. Either way, company representatives and agents can walk you through the process, to make sure you get the coverage you need and any discounts you are entitled to.

If you prefer to deal directly or start the process yourself, you can get a free quote by going to the company’s website. You can also call Travelers and speak to a company representative.

If working with a local agent is your preference, you can find one by going to the Travelers website and entering your city and state or ZIP code. You’ll get a list of agents nearby, along with types of coverage offered by each.

However you choose to get a quote and purchase a policy, be prepared to answer some questions about your home, its location, and contents.

Here are some of the things to know before starting the quoting process:

  • Age and size of your home, including garages and outbuildings
  • Age of your roof, and type of roofing material used
  • Whether your home is in or near a flood zone
  • Types of security devices and alarms installed, if any

You should also have on hand:

  • Inventory of appliances, computers, audio, and video equipment
  • List of valuables, including jewelry and artwork
  • Copy of your current homeowners insurance policy

Doing a little homework will help you get the best policy for your needs. The more thorough you are with itemizing details of your home and its contents, the better the likelihood of getting the best policy for your needs.

How Do I File a Homeowners Insurance Claim with Travelers?

Travelers customers can file a homeowners insurance claim either through the company website or by calling a toll-free phone number staffed 24/7.

Travelers states the fastest way to process a claim is usually through the company website, which walks you through the process with a series of questions. Whichever way you file your claim, make sure to include as many details as possible to ease the process and make sure you get the reimbursement you’re entitled to. Here are some things to consider having handy when making a claim:

  • Your name and contact information
  • Homeowners insurance policy information
  • Date of incident, and type of damage
  • Detailed description of the loss
  • Description of injuries if any
  • Inventory of items lost or damaged

Take plenty of photos to document the damage, and try to mitigate further damage if it is safe to do so. Save receipts for any tarps or other material used for this. Make sure to be available when the company sends an adjuster to your home, and be as thorough as possible when going over the damage.

The sooner you report damage, the sooner you’re likely to get help. This is particularly important after a major weather event when many homeowners may be making claims.

Travelers vs. the Competition

Travelers vs. liberty mutual.

Travelers and Liberty Mutual tied for No. 9 in our Best Homeowners Insurance Companies of 2024 rating. Both companies offer the same basic coverages in a standard homeowners insurance policy as you’ll find with their competitors. In addition, some other insurers are more generous with extras included at no extra cost, such as identity theft or water backup coverage. Neither are included with a standard policy from Travelers or Liberty Mutual.

Travelers offers earthquake coverage as an option, along with a “green improvement” option to rebuild your home to a more eco-friendly and energy-efficient standard. Neither of those coverages is offered by Liberty Mutual.

Liberty Mutual doesn’t offer reduced rates for an alarm system or protective devices such as smoke detectors, two things typically offered by competitors. Travelers doesn’t provide a discount for a newly remodeled home, but others including Liberty Mutual do.

Whichever company you choose, make sure to look carefully at their standard coverages and options to tailor the best policy for your needs.

Liberty Mutual is available in all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., but Travelers doesn’t offer coverage in California or Florida.

Travelers vs. Lemonade

Lemonade insurance has been in business since 2015 and is in a tie for the No. 7 spot in our Best Homeowners Insurance Companies of 2024 rating. A notable difference with Lemonade is that the company does business primarily online, from getting a quote to filing a claim.

A more traditional insurance company, Travelers offers the option of working with a local agent or calling the company directly, while also providing an online option for getting a quote, filing a claim, paying your bill, and more.

A standard homeowners policy with either company includes the standard coverages typically found with many insurers, but Lemonade includes replacement cost coverage at no extra cost. That’s something you’ll pay more for with Travelers. Travelers offers “green improvement” coverage as an option, something not available with Lemonade.

Both provide reduced rates for an alarm system, protective devices, and bundling policies. But doesn’t offer a discount for a remodeled home or a loyalty discount. Travelers provides a discount for remaining claims free, something not available with Lemonade.

Lemonade is available in only 22 states and Washington, D.C. while Travelers is available in 48 states and Washington, D.C.

Other Insurance Offered by Travelers

In addition to homeowners policies, Travelers offers a wide variety of insurance products, including:

  • Boat and yacht
  • Valuable items
  • Wedding and event
  • General liability
  • Management and professional liability
  • Small business owner’s policy
  • Workers compensation

You can start the quote process on the company’s website or by calling (866) 522-1338. If you’re looking to report a claim, you can reach Travelers Insurance 24/7 at (800) 252-4633 or via an email form on their website.

Mold caused by a sprinkler system or the fire department when extinguishing a blaze is covered. Homeowners insurance policies will typically cover damage from mold if it is caused by something like a burst pipe, failed hot water heater, or leaking appliance. If the mold is deemed to be the result of poor maintenance, it may not be covered.

Water damage from something like a burst pipe or failed washing machine may be covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. You may also be covered if the damage is caused by rain after a tree has gone through the roof. But flood damage is not covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy. Depending on your location, flood insurance may be available as an option through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Standard homeowners insurance policies don’t typically include insect damage, because this type of damage is normally considered to be a maintenance issue.

Theft is covered with a standard policy from Travelers, up to the limits of your policy. If you have expensive jewelry or collectibles, consider adding optional valuable possessions coverage.

A leaky roof may be covered, depending on the cause. If the leak is caused by storm damage or a falling tree, you may be covered. If the damage is deemed the result of poor maintenance, it is unlikely to be covered.

Damager caused by a roof leak may be covered by your policy, but to be sure you should check with your insurance company.

Damage from a falling tree or branch may be covered as long as the damage is caused by wind, a storm, or other covered event. Keeping trees healthy and pruned can help prevent damage and make filing a claim easier if a problem does occur.

Dog bites or property damage caused by a pet are covered by the personal liability coverage part of a homeowners insurance policy with Travelers. Check with your agent about coverage limits or possible restrictions.

A homeowners insurance policy with Travelers includes personal liability coverage to pay medical bills and damages in the event of a visitor being injured on your property. You can purchase additional liability coverage if you feel that standard coverage is insufficient.

It can also provide coverage if someone in your household unintentionally causes damage to someone else’s property.

Fire insurance is included with a standard homeowners insurance policy from Travelers. Minimizing risk is key, and Travelers offers discounts for preventive devices such as smoke detectors and fire alarms.

Homeowners insurance generally does not cover damage from insects, because keeping pests out of your home is considered routine maintenance.

To cancel your policy, contact your insurance agent or call the dedicated billing line at (800) 842-5075. Refer to your policy agreement or ask your agent if you can expect any early termination fees.

Customers reported that they enjoyed the shopping experience and usability on its website. Below is a summary of our results.

Travelers Insurance Customer Satisfaction

Of the 6,923 respondents, 1.5% (or 105) had a Travelers auto insurance policy. These respondents rated Travelers a score of 4.2 out of 5 in terms of overall customer satisfaction.

Travelers Insurance Customer Ratings

Here’s a look at how survey respondents rated Travelers insurance customer service in five major segments: affordability, discounts, coverage, shopping and website experience.

Travelers Insurance Reviews BBB

Travelers has an A rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). But out of 230 customer reviews on the website, Travelers averaged a score of 1 out of 5 stars. While this may seem alarming, this website is generally used for customer complaints, and the company has responded to more complaints than reviews in the past 12 months. It’s also a small sample size in comparison to its larger clientele.

Our team reached out to Travelers about its negative reviews and scores, but received no response.

Travelers Insurance Reviews Reddit

Overall, reviews on Reddit for the company are extremely positive and people praise its great customer service, large array of discounts and great claims services. They also say Travelers’ prices are lower than those of competitors like Allstate and Progressive. Negative reviews from Reddit users say that certain vehicles can’t take advantage of lower rates, and some report having customer service issues when getting a policy from the company directly.

Travelers Insurance App Reviews

Those who use the Travelers insurance app rate it highly. On the App Store, the Travelers Mobile application averaged a score of 4.7 out 5 stars with 65,000 reviews. On Google Play, the score was lower at 3.5 out of 5 from around 1,420 reviews. Many praise the app for its ease of use and convenient profile management while others report a lack of up-to-date information (mostly on the Google Play app version).

Travelers Home Insurance

While Travelers offers plenty of coverage options, the company tends to be on the expensive side compared to other providers. You’ll likely find the best home insurance for you elsewhere. We recommend comparing homeowners policy quotes to find a great deal.

Travelers Home Insurance Cost

Based on our analysis of average home insurance costs , we found a homeowners policy from Travelers can cost anywhere from $1,856 to $3,941 or an average of $2,661 . This is more expensive than the  industry average of $2,417. However, pricing for homeowners policies can differ based on location, square footage, home age, credit score and more.

  • Dwelling coverage : This coverage helps you pay to repair or rebuild your home if a covered event damages it. Note that you’ll want to have enough dwelling coverage to pay for estimated repairs or rebuild or replace your property.
  • Other structures coverage: This insurance helps pay for covered damages to detached structures on your property like garages, sheds and fences.
  • Personal property coverage: This coverage helps pay for personal items in your home, such as furniture and clothes, which were damaged or destroyed by a covered loss.
  • Loss of use coverage : This insurance helps cover additional living expenses if you temporarily move out of your home while it’s being restored.
  • Personal liability coverage: This coverage can protect you in the event of a claim and helps cover costs if a lawsuit is brought against you or a member of your household for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Medical payments to others: This insurance pays for medical bills if someone is injured in your home and it’s not your fault.

The company also has options for condo insurance with similar coverages to those mentioned above.

Our Methodology

Because consumers rely on us to provide objective and accurate information, we created a comprehensive rating system to formulate our rankings of the best car insurance companies. We collected data on dozens of auto insurance providers to grade the companies on a wide range of ranking factors. The end result was an overall rating for each provider, with the insurers that scored the most points topping the list.

Here are the factors our ratings take into account:

  • Cost : Auto insurance rate estimates generated by Quadrant Information Services and discount opportunities were both taken into consideration.
  • Coverage : Companies that offer a variety of choices for insurance coverage are more likely to meet consumer needs.
  • Reputation and experience : Our research team considered market share, ratings from industry experts and years in business when giving this score.
  • Availability : Auto insurance companies with greater state availability and few eligibility requirements scored highest in this category.

Customer experience : This score is based on volume of complaints reported by the NAIC and customer satisfaction ratings reported by J.D. Power. We also considered the responsiveness, friendliness and helpfulness of each insurance company’s customer service team based on our own shopper analysis.

Travelers Overview

Travelers homeowners insurance is available in all 50 states, and according to AM Best, the company’ Financial Strength Rating is A++. On YouGov.com’s authority, Travelers is the 24th most popular insurance brand, with 71% of people being familiar with the company.

The company has been accredited with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since 2010 and has an A+ rating with the organization. However, based on customer reviews and complaints, Travelers has 1.13 out of 5 stars. Many of the complaints are regarding Travelers’ auto insurance, but home insurance customers have complained about not being qualified for discounts, filing claims to the company, hidden fees, and increasing premiums.

  • Mutlitple coverage options: Travelers policyholders might be able to customize their policies with options like special personal property, water backup coverage, and green home coverage.
  • Wide range of discounts: You may be able to save money with the variety of deals and discounts that this company offers, such as protective device discounts, green home discounts, loss-free discounts, and home buyer discounts.
  • National homeowners insurance coverage: Travelers home insurance is available nationwide.
  • Inconsistent customer satisfaction: J.D. Power and the Better Business Bureau ratings indicate a high rate of customer complaints, while NAIC has better rankings, showcasing a hit-or-miss experience.
  • You might have to call to complete the purchase: For those that prefer doing everything online, this could be a roadblock, as you might need to contact an agent to complete your purchase.
  • Hidden fees and rising premiums: Many complaints about Travelers revolved around surprise fees on policies, including raised premiums.

Travelers Highlights

Travelers home insurance uses an in-depth online application to generate policy quotes based on where you live, if you’ve recently moved, what type of house you live in, including square footage, siding type, heating system, year built, and any “green” features such as solar panels, along with your credit score (depending on your state). While the quote will vary significantly across home types and policy coverage needs, Travelers does have a reputation for competitive rates offering and discounts for customers. However, getting quotes for multiple providers for the same coverage might help you to see who offers the best deal.

Standard insurance policies from Travelers homeowners insurance are HO-3 forms, the most common coverage, which covers damage to homes from any peril not specifically excluded, but only covers your personal property from the perils specifically named in your policy. . The policy also typically protects visitors if they are injured on your property and covers loss of use in the case your home is no longer habitable.

Travelers also offer add-on coverages, such as special personal property, content replacement cost, jewelry and valuable items, personal articles floater, water backup and sump pump overflow, identity fraud, and green home protection. If you are wondering how to estimate the homeowners insurance for you, check out our guide.

The overall Travelers homeowners customer experience is hit or miss. While the site contains great educational resources to help homeowners figure out their coverage needs, the company scores 803/1,000 on the J.D. Power 2020 Home Insurance Study , which is below average. Still, the company has fewer complaints than average on homeowners customer satisfaction according to the NAIC .

If customers need support, they can reach out to Travelers by phone, check out the company’s in-depth online FAQ section, or log in to their account to view current policy details. Travelers’ mobile app is user-friendly and allows you to file claims, make payments, access virtual ID cards and manage your policy directly.

Homeowners may have access to a variety of discounts and deals from Travelers. For example, purchasing a car insurance policy from Travelers in addition to homeowners coverage could save you 12%, on average, and you can save up to 5% if your home is LEED-certified green. The company also offers a new homebuyers discount for customers who purchased their home in the last 12 months, along with discounts for homeowners who haven’t experienced a home loss within a specified time period.

Methodology

We evaluated the company based on their customer rating and experience, financial stability, and coverage to determine Reviews.com score and create our Travelers Homeowners Insurance Review. To compare this company with home insurance companies across the board, we then compared each Reviews.com score based on the following:

  • Customer Ratings: Customer ratings are an indication of satisfaction with the process of filing a claim. We measured this using J.D. Power Homeowners Satisfaction ratings.
  • Coverage: As there isn’t one company to fit everyone’s needs, we evaluated companies by the amount of coverage options and add-ons available.
  • Confidence: It is extremely important for insurance companies to fulfill customers’ claims. Companies with sound financial strength ratings indicate a positive history of being able to pay out claims. We measured this using AM Best’s ratings, which specializes in assessing the financial strength of insurance companies.
  • Customer Experience: The amount of complaints a company receives is an indicator of the overall customer experience as it expresses dissatisfaction. We have based this measure on the NAIC National Complaint Index.

The Competition

*All information accurate as of 07/29/2021.

Travelers vs. State Farm

When we compared Travelers to State Farm, we found that both companies offer a robust web experience for their customers. Although Travelers has a user-friendly website and an intuitive app, State Farm excels at educational resources for their customers and having a positive web experience.

In terms of customer service, Travelers got a J.D. Power score of 803/1,000, which is lower than State Farm’s 829/1,000. Both companies have low NAIC complaint index scores for their homeowners insurance products. Another thing that made Travelers stand out against State Farm is that it has more coverage options and discounts for properties.

Travelers vs. Liberty Mutual

While evaluating Travelers against Liberty Mutual, we liked that both companies have extensive discounts for their customers. However, Liberty Mutual offers unique discounts such as paperless statements and also offers insurance-to-value. Both companies offer optional coverages that could allow policyholders to customize their coverage and Liberty Mutual is one of our top picks for the best homeowner insurance companies .

Travelers edges out Liberty Mutual when it comes to customer service. The two companies’ J.D. Power scores are nearly identical, but the NAIC complaint index tells a much different story: Travelers has very few complaints, while Liberty has more than four times the national average number of complaints for its homeowners insurance. Travelers also has more financial stability than Liberty Mutual, with Travelers earning an A++ from AM Best, compared to Liberty’s A.

Travelers vs. Allstate

Both Travelers and Allstate offer customers extensive optional coverages to help build policies tailored to individual needs. Similarly, both companies offer a handful of discounts — Allstate features eight on its website, and Travelers features five. Allstate made our list of best home insurance companies because of these attributes.

Travelers has a slightly higher financial strength rating than Allstate, with an A++ (Superior) rating compared to Allstate’s A+ (Superior) rating. Customer service reviews are mixed. Allstate received a higher J.D. Power score than Travelers. Despite this, the NAIC recorded fewer complaints about Travelers than it recorded about Allstate. Based on its stronger financial strength and fewer NAIC complaints, Travelers edged out Allstate for a higher Reviews.com Score.

The Bottom Line

Travelers homeowners insurance offers the benefit of industry experience and customizable policies to help homeowners protect their property and enjoy peace of mind. The company doesn’t fare so well when it comes to customer service, however, scoring below average across claims satisfaction and overall service.

If customization and availability of ranges of discounts are your priorities, Travelers could be a good option for your home insurance policy. If excellent service is your insurance standard, you may want to consider a different home protection partner.

Travelers Homeowners Insurance FAQ

What other property insurance does travelers offer.

Travelers also offer individual and business insurance to cover specific property and general liability risks, along with condo, renters, and landlord insurance. For those customers who already have a policy with the company, bundling multiple coverage types might reduce their total premium cost.

While there’s no specific amount of insurance required by law, your lender will likely require you to carry enough dwelling coverage to pay off your mortgage if your home is destroyed. You might consider using an online tool to determine your home’s rebuilding value and the value of your personal property, although most insurance companies run these calculations when they quote your policy. Check out our Homeowners Insurance FAQ and our article on how to estimate your homeowners insurance for more information about striking a balance between protection and premium price.

Below, we review the provider and its offers and how they compare to the competition to help you choose the right travel insurance for your next trip.

Travel Guard review

Other insurance offered, how it compares, bottom line, travel guard® travel insurance.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

Travel Guard offers a variety of plans to suit travel ranging from road trips to long cruises. For air travelers, Travel Guard can help assist with tracking baggage or covering lost or delayed baggage.

24/7 assistance available

  • A variety of plans are available to help cover different types of trips
  • Not all products are available for purchase online

Travel Guard® is a global travel insurance provider specializing in plans for leisure and business travelers. Its online travel insurance packages include five options, from basic and last-minute trip coverage to more comprehensive plans. This allows travelers to pick a plan that best matches their situation.

For example, budget-minded travelers might go for the Essential Plan which offers basic protections, such as trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance, coverage for lost, damaged and delayed baggage, and medical, evacuation and death coverage.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

Finally, Travel Guard offers "offline" travel insurance packages, meaning you'll have to call if you're looking for a specialty plan.

Coverage types

Depending on the plan, here are the types of protection Travel Guard can include in your package:

  • Trip cancellations
  • Trip interruption
  • Baggage coverage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel medical expenses
  • Travel inconvenience benefits (reimbursement for such situations as runway delays, cruise diversion and other unforeseen situations)
  • Medical evacuation
  • Trip Saver (reimbursement for meals, hotels and transportation if you need to begin your trip sooner due to weather or airline changes)
  • Trip exchange (reimbursement in case you have to cancel your trip and book a new one due to covered unforeseen circumstances)
  • Security evacuation (due to a riot or civil disorder)
  • Flight guard (coverage for accidental death or dismemberment that occurs when traveling by plane)
  • Pre-existing medical conditions exclusion waiver

You can also customize your plan with add-ons, such as car rental insurance and "cancel for any reason" coverage .

Travel Guard landed on our list of the best travel insurance companies thanks to its variety of coverage. With plenty of options to choose from, both online and offline, it's easy to build a policy that meets your needs.

Travel Guard also features 24-hour concierge services that you can use to book a new flight in case of an emergency or delay.

The provider's website also offers informational resources — here, you can check travel news, read safety tips and find general travel advice. Additionally, the website lets you modify your plan, file a claim and check its status, or apply for a voucher or refund.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

Travel Guard makes it easy to get a travel insurance policy customized to your needs. But before you purchase coverage, it's always a good idea to shop around.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.

Best term life insurance companies

How to find the best term life insurance company for you, frequently asked questions.

Not everyone needs life insurance that covers you for your entire life. For anyone looking for more temporary coverage — like those with young children or a mortgage to pay off — there is term life insurance. Term life insurance provides coverage for a pre-set period of time, which is usually between 10 and 30 years. In exchange for your regularly paid premium, your beneficiaries receive a payout if you die while the policy is active. However, the payout tends to be lower compared to other types of life insurance policies. Bankrate’s guide to the best term life insurance can help you find an insurer that meets your policy needs and budget.

Compare life insurance providers quickly and easily

See which provider is right for you.

Whole life insurance combines life insurance with an investment component.

  • Coverage for life
  • Tax-deferred savings benefit if premiums are paid
  • 3 variations of permanent insurance: whole life, universal life and variable life include investment component

Term life insurance is precisely what the name implies: an insurance policy that is good for a specific term of time.

  • Fixed premium over term
  • No savings benefits
  • Outliving policy or policy cancellation results in no money back

Powered by Coverage.com (NPN: 19966249)

The best term life insurance companies depend on an individual’s needs and preferences. While your quoted premium will typically not vary as much as for life quotes as home or auto insurance, different companies do offer different coverage types and levels. We chose the following companies based on their third-party financial strength and J.D. Power customer satisfaction scores , as well as the policy options and available coverage capacities (the maximum dollar amount a policy can be). It may be helpful to start your research with the following providers:

Why we chose it: State Farm has the highest J.D. Power score for customer satisfaction on our list.

State Farm is our 2024 Bankrate Awards winner for Best Term Life Insurer for the third year in a row thanks to its superior AM Best score and near-nationwide availability. State Farm offers several term insurance products, but its return-of-premium policy option may be particularly helpful for certain term life insurance policyholders. This add-on coverage (also known as a life insurance rider ) lets policyholders choose between a 20- or 30-year payment term and receive a portion of their premiums back if they outlive the term. The return-of-premium policy can be renewed annually until age 95. While the return-of-premium option comes at an additional cost, it also builds cash value , which is rare in a term life insurance policy.

Why we chose it: Mutual of Omaha offers easy online quoting for its term life insurance policies and a wide array of riders for potential policy customization.

If you want to get an idea of how much term life insurance might cost, Mutual of Omaha offers a term life insurance quote tool online. Enter your gender, date of birth, tobacco usage and coverage amount to get a rate. Mutual of Omaha offers a plethora of additional riders that can be added to its term life policies. It should be noted that not every rider can be used with every type of policy. To verify how much coverage you need and which riders can be added to your policy, you may want to consult with an agent. This company also offers a locator service to help you find a financial advisor near you.

Why we chose it: Pacific Life has term life insurance policy options with high coverage levels.

Anyone wanting to tailor their term life insurance with riders or purchase higher coverage limits might consider Pacific Life for term life insurance. The carrier offers two policy options, Promise Term and Elite Term, both of which are convertible to cash value life insurance. Its Promise Term policy offers a minimum amount of $50,000 in coverage, while the Elite Term starts at $750,000 and goes to $3 million or more. Available options include a waiver of premium for disability, as well as a terminal illness and child term rider.

Why we chose it: Northwestern Mutual offers a wide array of informational resources and policy management tools online.

Northwestern Mutual is the largest life insurer in the U.S. by direct premiums written, with just over 7 percent of the total market share. The company has been insuring consumers for more than 150 years. Its term policies allow you to select your coverage period based on either a set amount of years or until a specific age, depending on which option is most suitable for you. Northwestern Mutual plans are also convertible to whole life insurance , meaning you may be able to adjust your policy as your needs evolve. The company’s A++ (Superior) financial strength rating from AM Best is the highest level available. However, the company only offers one term life insurance rider, so if you want greater policy customization, it may not be the carrier for you.

Why we chose it: Guardian life insurance offers four different term lengths and a long list of potential riders.

Guardian's term life insurance policies are available in four term lengths. The carrier also has a long list of riders for potential policy customization, including a guaranteed renewability clause in the event that you are diagnosed with a serious illness. However, be aware that the company does not offer a network of local agents, so if you prefer to handle your insurance needs face-to-face, you may not be satisfied with the level of service.

There are several factors to consider when shopping for a quality term life insurance policy. Since your life insurance will ultimately be responsible for providing the coverage you want for your family, these considerations may be beneficial to keep in mind when determining which provider is right for you. In addition to policy types, you could consider the following.

Consider customer satisfaction scores and financial strength ratings

Customer satisfaction scores may provide insight for consumers looking to purchase insurance products. These scores reflect how satisfied existing customers may be with the customer service and claims process. You might use these scores to get an idea of how your customer experience could be and which carrier might best fit your expectations.

A life insurance company’s financial strength score reflects its past ability to pay out claims and could help you decide if a company is financially sound. Third-party agencies such as AM Best and S&P publish financial strength ratings for each major provider.

Consider your personal situation

Term life insurance remains active for only a set number of years. To decide whether term life insurance is right for you, it may be helpful to consider what you want coverage for. Do you simply want coverage while your children are young, or would you prefer lifelong coverage?

While term life insurance may be sufficient for temporary needs, like ensuring you could pay off debt and finance college for your kids if you were to pass away, it may not be the right choice if you want coverage for longer. If you need coverage for final expenses or to take care of a lifelong dependent, permanent life insurance may be a better choice. There are several options to choose from, including:

  • Whole life insurance : Whole life offers level premiums and a guaranteed death benefit for life. It also builds cash value over time, which you may be able to access through withdrawals or loans.
  • Universal life insurance : Similar to whole life, universal life offers permanent coverage with more flexibility. You can increase or decrease premium payments or the death benefit if life circumstances change.
  • Final expense life insurance : If you only need a small amount of coverage or have serious health issues, final expense life insurance may be your best option. It works like whole life, but doesn’t require a medical exam. Some policies are guaranteed issue, meaning there is no medical exam or health questions on the application.

Compare multiple quotes

Getting quotes for different types and levels of coverage may help you get an idea of how much you’ll pay for your life insurance. However, keep in mind that term life insurance quotes for the same person and policy type likely won’t vary as much from company to company as auto insurance or home insurance quotes do.

How does term life insurance work?

Term life insurance is a type of life insurance that offers coverage for a set period of time, or term. Term life is usually the most affordable type of life insurance because it only lasts for a specific number of years, usually 10 to 30 years. Unless you buy return-of-premium life insurance, you receive nothing back if you outlive the term. However, many term life insurance policies offer the option to convert to a permanent life insurance policy at the end of the term. Many carriers also provide the option to renew a term life policy annually if you still need coverage past the expiration date.

What is the difference between term and whole life insurance?

Term insurance is designed to provide a death benefit if the insured passes away within the policy term. As the name suggests, term life insurance remains active for a predetermined “term,” which is the window of time that the policyholder chooses — typically between 10 and 30 years. When the term expires, the policyholder stops paying the premiums and the death benefit will no longer be paid out. Whole life insurance , on the other hand, is a type of permanent policy that pays out when the insured dies as long as premiums are paid. It typically contains two parts: a death benefit and a cash value component. Because whole life insurance policies usually have larger payouts, premiums can be two to three times more expensive than a term policy.

What factors impact my life insurance premium?

Life insurance premiums are largely based on mortality risk. In general, the higher the likelihood someone has of passing away while the policy is active, the higher the premium will be. Each insurer has its own underwriting algorithm for calculating your rate. Although each underwriting process is different, your age, gender, weight, health conditions, smoking history and occupation are typically used to help calculate your premium. The amount of coverage that you want to purchase is another key factor in determining the cost of life insurance . For those looking for cheap life insurance , it may be wiser to start shopping at a younger age.

Does having a preexisting condition impact my ability to purchase term life insurance?

Yes, having a preexisting condition may impact your ability to purchase term life insurance. Different conditions may be considered more or less serious by different insurers. If a life insurance provider does approve you for a term life policy with a preexisting condition, your premium may be high to reflect the health risks. Insurance providers may be more likely to approve you if you have conditions that can be managed. For instance, if you have Type 2 diabetes and maintain a healthy lifestyle, you may be more likely to be approved for term life insurance. If you have a preexisting condition, speaking with a licensed insurance agent may help you navigate your life insurance options.

Is term life insurance cheaper than whole life insurance?

The cost of life insurance will vary based on your policy details and personal rating factors, but term life insurance coverage is typically cheaper than whole life insurance, a type of permanent coverage. This is because whole life insurance is designed to offer coverage for your entire life and guarantee a payout to your beneficiaries, as long as premiums are paid and terms of the policy are met. Term coverage, on the other hand, may not pay out a death benefit if you outlive the policy term and do not renew your coverage. That being said, the cost of life insurance coverage varies based on coverage amount and individual risk rating factors, so a term policy with a high coverage amount for an older individual may cost more than a permanent policy for a younger applicant with a low coverage amount.

If you're looking for travel insurance that allows you to confidently participate in a wide range of sports and adventure activities around the world, then World Nomads Travel Insurance might be right for you. The company's policies cover travel to almost anywhere on the globe and are available to residents of nearly every country.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Review

Among the best international travel insurance companies , World Nomads is particularly good at insuring athletes, covering well over 300 sports, including skydiving, bungee jumping, and golf. World Nomads is also a great last-minute purchase, allowing you to purchase coverage even after your trip has started. However, if you purchase a plan after departure, you will have to wait 72 hours before your plan kicks in.

That said, World Nomads lacks crucial coverage options, such as cancel for any reason coverage and coverage for pre-existing conditions. It also doesn't insure travelers older than 70.

Additionally the service has received middling reviews from customers, averaging 3.4 stars out of five across 2,510 reviews. Customers often complained about their lengthy claims processes and poor customer service.

Some also took issue with the "Nomads" branding, as some travelers with multiple destinations and long-term trips found their trip wasn't covered by Nomads' specific policies. It's worth noting that World Nomads was very responsive to positive and negative reviews on Trustpilot.

World Nomads Plans Available

World Nomads has two basic policies: Standard and Explorer. Each covers essentially the same things, but Explorer has higher amounts that World Nomads is willing to pay out for claims. The company's policies cover more than 150 specific activities. These range from bungee jumping and rock climbing to hang gliding and hot-air ballooning. You can see the full list on the company's website.

Additional Coverage Options (Riders)

One of the most common upgraded features of a travel insurance policy is cancel for any reason (CFAR) , where you really can cancel for reason beyond what's in a standard policy. This is not available on every policy, but it is often a feature that travelers are looking for while shopping for travel insurance before their trip. At this time, World Nomads doesn't offer CFAR coverage.

At the time of this review, World Nomads also offers sports equipment coverage. In February of 2022, it expanded coverage to include more than 150 sports and activities including Pickleball and FootGolf. It currently covers over 300 sports. So, as you can imagine, plans with sports coverage will cover virtually any sport you might play.

World Nomads Travel Insurance Cost

You can obtain a quote from World Nomads on its website by providing details about you and your trip. Be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Your destination(s)
  • Duration of trip
  • Your country of residence
  • State of residence (if you're from the US)
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age

Notably, World Nomads does not ask you for the price of the trip, which many travel insurance companies factor into the trip of your policy. As such, World Nomads may be a good option if you're going on a particularly expensive trip.

We ran a few simulations to offer examples of how much a World Nomads policy might cost. You'll see that costs usually fall between 5% and 7% of the total trip cost, depending on the policy tier you choose.

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following  World Nomads travel insurance quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $76.58
  • World Nomads Explorer: $123.34

Premiums for World Nomads's plans are well below the average cost of travel insurance .

World Nomads provides the following quotes for a 30-year-old traveler from California heading to Japan for two weeks on a $4,000 trip:

  • World Nomads Standard: $85.83
  • World Nomads Explorer: $155.06

Once again, premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.2% and 3.8%, below the average cost for travel insurance.

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following World Nomads quotes:

  • World Nomads Standard: $152.96
  • World Nomads Explorer: $276.34

Premiums for World Nomads plans are between 2.6% and 4.6%, once again below the average cost for travel insurance. This is especially impressive as travel insurance is often more expensive for older travelers.

Compare World Nomads Travel Insurance

World Nomads is particularly good at insuring traveling athletes, but let's see how it stacks up against the best travel insurance companies .

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz Travel Insurance is a strong competitor against World Nomads, especially for travelers looking for a more business-oriented option. The company has been in business for more than 120 years and offers a wide range of insurance, not just travel-related, around the world.

A key difference between World Nomads and Allianz Travel Insurance is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers travel insurance that can cover multiple trips in the same year. You can take an unlimited number of trips within the same calendar year, but you do have to double-check that all of your destinations are covered by the policy you select.

Another difference is that Allianz Travel Insurance offers pre-existing condition waivers for qualifying customers. World Nomads doesn't have the same coverage, requiring that the pre-existing condition is fully stable in order for limited coverage with respect to trip cancellations or having to end a trip early.

Read our Allianz travel insurance review here.

World Nomads Travel Insurance vs. AIG Travel Guard

Travel Guard , a product backed by AIG Travel, is another potential alternative to World Nomads. AIG is a prominent player in the insurance industry, and the Travel Guard product represents true global coverage.

Unlike World Nomads, Travel Guard has coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, but there are conditions. Travelers must purchase their policy within 15 days of the initial trip payment to qualify for a pre-existing condition waiver.

Both travel insurance companies use a tiered approach, but Travel Guard has higher dollar amounts across the board. For example, trip cancellation for Travel Guard covers 100% of the trip cost, while with World Nomads the amount will depends on the tier of the coverage you purchase. Trip Interruption is also a fully covered event with Travel Guard's. Depending on the plan selected, it will either cover 100% or 150% of the trip cost.

If you're concerned about COVID-19 coverage with trip insurance, there's more coverage with World Nomads than Travel Guard. With Travel Guard, coverage for having to stay in a country past your original booking dates is an add-on, not a standard part of the policy.

Read our AIG Travel Insurance review here.

Compare World Nomad vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

If you already have a major credit card in your wallet, you most likely have some travel insurance benefits that come with it. These benefits do vary from card to card. Be sure to check your card's specific policies.

Not all credit cards will feature travel insurance protection. The ones that do may have specific limitations. For example, many credit cards with travel protection require that your airfare is paid for with the card in question for protections to take effect.

Reimbursement isn't guaranteed. The credit cards do require that you file your claim and wait for a decision. World Nomads makes it easy to file a claim online and submit receipts and documentation. The response is fairly quick based on reviews from travelers that have actually had to file claims.

The more premium the credit card, the more likely expanded travel protections are part of its features. If you don't already have a premium credit card, it's better to get travel insurance. This is also the case if you have multiple trips planned. Some credit cards limit not just the total dollar amount, but the number of claims within a 12-month period.

Read our guide on the best credit cards with travel insurance here.

Tick Travel Insurance Top Cover Review: Pros and Cons

Published: Apr 24, 2024, 1:46am

When comparing Tick Travel Insurance’s pricing against cover levels in key areas, such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation, it can be considered a highly competitive player in the market. Travellers will likely appreciate the unlimited medical cover and $20,000 of cancellation cover available. Plus, the 24-hour medical emergency assistance line may offer added peace of mind. However, whether Tick Travel Insurance Top Policy will be suitable for you, will likely come down to whether cover levels across other areas of need will be high enough.

  • Competitive pricing
  • High levels of medical and cancellation cover
  • High customer service rating
  • Credit card fraud not covered
  • Higher levels of luggage cover elsewhere
  • Missed connections not covered

Tick Travel Insurance is owned by Europ Assistance which is a part of the global Generali Group, and underwritten by Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company Limited.

Generali is a large global insurance and asset management provider, while Europe Assistance says it has a presence in over 200 countries, providing comfort and empathy to customers in emergency situations, and an immediate global response.

Tick Travel Insurance’s aim is to make travel insurance simple, covering travellers up to age 100. It offers three levels of domestic travel insurance: Basic, Standard and Top and four types of international travel insurance: Basic, Budget, Standard and Top.

This review will focus on the most comprehensive offering for international travel, being the Tick Travel Insurance Top Plan.

Tick Travel Insurance provides domestic and international cover, offering policies for single trips and annual cover for multiple trips in a year. The provider covers adults up to the age of 100, while dependent children, up to 18-years-old at time of purchase, are insured for free on an adult’s policy.

As typical of travel insurance, its policies cover trip cancellation or curtailment and journey resumption, due to unforeseen circumstances such as injury or illness, as standard. Cover for travel delay is available on the top policies, with a pay out of $100 per completed hour up to $1,000. Valid reasons for claiming include bad weather, a vehicle breakdown or strike, and experiencing a delay of more than 12 hours.

Tick Travel Insurance’s Top Plan also includes the following standard benefits that form a part of most comprehensive travel insurance policies:

Lost Luggage

This insurer covers the cost of repairing or replacing your lost, stolen or damaged personal belongings up to $7,500. Take note of the $3,000 sublimit— individual limit— on how much you can claim for devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, video cameras and cameras.

Tick Travel Insurance offers unlimited medical cover, which includes cover for ambulance and emergency surgery, repatriation if necessary, and the death of you, or another person insured on the policy.

While the insurer can cover pre-existing conditions (medical conditions you had before taking out the policy), whether you will be eligible for this cover will depend on the details you provide, outlining the condition and its severity, in the medical screening section of the application.

Is Dental Cover Included?

This insurer also extends its cover to dental treatment, paying out up to $500. This is half of what many providers offer, and bear in mind that you can only claim for dental cover for situations where you need immediate pain relief.

Yes, protection against risks in relation to Covid-19 are covered by Tick Travel Insurance’s Top policy. The insurer accepts related cancellation and disruption claims, as well as medical claims for trips outside of Australia.

What About Pregnancy?

You can claim for an extensive range of pregnancy or childbirth complications up to 31 weeks into your pregnancy with this insurer. These include toxaemia, gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia.

What About Sports And Activities?

From abseiling, to jet skiing and motorcycling, insurance for 90 sports and activities is included automatically with Tick Travel Insurance.

Remember to look out for conditions for claiming. For instance, you will only be covered for three bungee jumps and can only kayak in grades 1 and 2 rapids or lower. Also, some activities may require safety gear that you will need to wear to make a valid claim.

Cover for personal liability and accidental injury only apply to certain activities, as specified in the PDS.

Compared to the competition, Tick Travel Insurance offers relatively decent to high levels of cover across the board for a super competitive price.

When comparing the price of its most comprehensive policy against those of Travel Insurance Direct and Allianz—two providers we rated highly for their comprehensive offering—it comes out on top.

The data below is based on a 28-year-old who needs insurance for Indonesia for seven days.

The above table shows how important it is to shop around for travel insurance, and weigh up your needs with your budget when comparing policies. Tick’s Travel Insurance’s Top policy is only $77, offers considerably more cancellation cover than its competitors and levies less in excess—the set portion of each claim you must pay.

However, it may not be suitable for those who need higher levels of cover in other areas such as lost luggage and rental car excess. You can find out exactly what a policy includes and excludes in its PDS, which is usually published on the insurer’s website.

You can also find out more about the comprehensive travel insurance providers Forbes Advisor Australia has independently rated the best.

Customers award Tick Travel Insurance a high score of 4 out of 5 stars across 2832 reviews on ProductReview, Australia’s leading consumer opinion site.

Satisfied customers were pleased with how simple they found the process of taking out insurance, and the price of their policy.

However, disgruntled customer complaints were varied. Some speak of technical difficulties with the provider taking payment and not offering a refund instead, trouble accessing their policy documents and rejected claims.

Tick Travel Insurance may be considered most suitable for those looking for reasonable to high levels of cover in key areas, for a competitive price. This includes unlimited medical cover and $20,000 for trip cancellation. In other areas cover levels are decent, but may not be suitable for all. Those taking away belongings worth over $7,500 or needing more than $4,000 in rental car excess may want to look elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where can i find the tick travel insurance pds.

A policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) details what it covers, any exclusions and limitations or sublimits. It’s crucial that travellers read through this document before deciding whether to purchase the policy.

Typically, an insurer will provide a link to a policy’s PDS on its website. The PDS for Tick Travel Insurance’s policies, including its comprehensive cover, are also online .

What is Tick Travel Insurance’s phone number?

How good is Tick travel insurance?

We have awarded Tick Travel Insurance 3.7 out of 5 stars based on factors such as the unlimited amount of medical cover, and high level of cancellation cover, it provides. It also scores highly on customer review site productreview.com.au.

However, customers should note it does not cover you, if you fall victim to credit card fraud while away. Neither are you able to choose the amount of cancellation cover you need as with some other insurers. This may not be of concern, considering $20,000 for cancellation is automatically provided, which is a considerable amount, and Tick Travel Insurance policies are competitively priced.

I have been writing for newspapers, magazines and online publications for over 10 years. My passion is providing, in a way that is easily accessible and digestible to all, the knowledge needed for readers to not only manage their finances, but financially flourish.

Planning for the future is the foundation that continues to draw customers to life insurance companies like Globe Life. Since 1900, Globe Life has helped individuals to face the unexpected and ensure a secure financial future for loved ones.

Life insurance is more diverse than ever before. Its foundation remains supporting families after the passing of a loved one. Globe Life issues 16.8 million policies, more than any of the nation's leading life insurance companies. But volume is only part of the picture.

Globe Life's zero-risk, money-back guarantee makes its policies an excellent fit for middle-income individuals looking to purchase directly from the company with no medical exam and short wait times. In addition, with benefits topping out at just $100,000, life insurance coverage from Globe Life is a good choice for individuals looking to supplement existing or employer-provided life insurance and those seeking coverage for additional family members.

However, even the best no medical exam life insurance doesn't always mean guaranteed acceptance. Buyers should expect medical questions, and the company may request medical records. Its underwriting decisions, especially for more comprehensive policies, will factor in this medical data.

Globe Life's forte is low-cost funeral plans, and customer reviews indicate it delivers on its promises. Kathy of Londonderry, OH, left a review on ConsumerAffairs after losing her 19-year-old grandson, saying, "I am so thankful to Globe Life. We could not have taken care of him without the policy. The funeral cost were paid very quickly with no stress of me handling anything and I could stay focused on what needed done."

Globe Life has been under pressure due to a series of investigations and lawsuits alleging a toxic work environment, deceptive consumer practices, and fraud. Its stock plunged about 50% in mid-April 2024 after a short-seller issued a scathing report describing, among other things, a work culture, "permissive of sexual assault, rape, racism, and widespread illicit drug activity" within American Income Life, a subsidiary of Globe Life. Globe Life denied the allegations, saying in a statement  that the short-seller "mischaracterizes facts and uses unsubstantiated claims and conjecture to present an overall picture of Globe Life that is deliberately false, misleading, and defamatory."

In March 2024, the Department of Justice subpoenaed AIL and Globe Life for documents related to Arias Organization, an affiliate insurance agency. The DOJ investigation, as well as two open investigations conducted by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, appear to be ongoing.

Globe Term Life Insurance

Globe Life offers term life insurance coverage ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Policies are purchased directly from the company with no medical exam and quick underwriting. Once your application is approved, Globe Life benefits and monthly premiums remain fixed when policyholders make payments on time.

Like any other term policy, Globe Life's policies expire after the set term. Globe Life mentions converting term policies to whole life insurance policies to make coverage permanent. But the website is light on details, focusing on extremely low premiums for specific customers. Globe Life's term life policies are available for adults and children. All applications are subject to underwriting approval. So the pricing listed online (and your acceptance) may vary when you secure the policy.

Globe Whole Life Insurance

Globe Life offers whole life policies with benefits from $5,000 to $50,000. You can purchase policies directly from the company with no medical exam and no long wait times. Rates remain constant for life, as does coverage (when premiums are paid on time), which means you can rest assured in your chosen coverage.

Remember, Globe Life's underwriting will not approve every application, especially with higher limits. No medical exam does not translate into no medical information required. Buyers will need to answer some medical questions, and the company can pull electronic medical records to make its decision. No medical policies are typically sold to select groups like seniors looking for funeral policies or young, healthy buyers willing to pay higher premiums for lower coverage to avoid a medical exam.

Globe Children's Life Insurance

Whole life insurance for kids (or grandkids) is available from Globe Life in numbers ranging from $5,000-$30,000. Full coverage and benefits begin on day one. Available with no medical exam and zero waiting, a hassle-free policy from Globe Life might be the easiest part of welcoming a new member to your family. Benefits remain constant for life, despite age, health status, or occupation when premiums are paid on time.

As with its adult policies, Globe Life offers children whole and term life insurance options. Applicants who get approval for children's policies can also buy more comprehensive policies as adults. However, these smaller policies offer a gateway into life insurance and its financial benefits early in life. Children's life insurance can be a wealth-building tool, particularly with its whole life policies. It's never too early for financial planning.

It's easy to find comparable adult policies through other companies. However, Globe Life's life insurance for children faces less competition overall.

Globe Final Expense Life Insurance

Many of Globe Life's policies could be considered "final expense" policies. By this, we mean the limits are low and only meant to cover funeral costs and a small amount of debt. However, it provides a specific product for seniors comfortable with lower coverage amounts. As a result, approval is often more straightforward.

This policy type comes with obvious limits (the death benefit). However, buyers should also be aware of other limitations, like the inability to build cash value over time. So no matter how long you live, the value will remain the same.

Additional Coverage Options Offered by Globe Life

Accidental Benefits Insurance

You can prepare for the unexpected and the financial strain that can accompany it with an extra layer of protection. Accidental death insurance from Globe Life provides up to $250,000 worth of coverage in the case of accidental death for just $1 to start. In addition, acceptance is guaranteed regardless of health for individuals aged 18-69. Additional benefits, furnished at no extra cost, include coverage for myriad issues from inflation and education to dismemberment and paralysis.

Accidental death coverage only pays out if you're killed in an accident. Causes could include travel-related accidents, trips and falls, poisonings, etc. It would not cover terminal illnesses, extended injuries after an accident, or dying from old age. Globe life also has a supplemental accidental insurance product. Accidental death coverage helps buyers with ambulance riders, ICU stays, and other medical costs of accidents that don't result in death.

Mortgage Protection Insurance

You can protect your family's biggest asset and a potential source of stress in the event of your accidental death. For just a fraction of your monthly mortgage payment, this type of accidental death and dismemberment policy provides between $50,000-$350,000 to pay off your home mortgage. If the payout doesn't pay off your mortgage, loved ones could then look into options to refinance the smaller debt to lower monthly payments.

Rates start at just $5.50 per month, and acceptance is guaranteed for individuals ages 18-69. Additional benefits, furnished at no extra cost, include coverage in the case of a common disaster or commercially scheduled airline accident, among others.

One important thing to note is this is an accidental death and dismemberment policy. In short, it's not a comprehensive plan for every cause of death. Benefits would only apply after a covered accident. The limits are part of what makes this policy so cheap. It's excellent for a policyholder's prime working years but may not be as beneficial for retirees.

Globe Life's advertised rates are affordable, with types of life insurance  for adults and children starting at $1 for the first month, after which the rate is based on the individual's current age and guaranteed for the policy terms. Unlike some competitors, Globe Life also offers a limited money-back guarantee. If unsatisfied, return your policy within 30 days for a full refund.

Globe Life offers many cheap plans with low payouts. These are great for buyers on a tight budget or those seeking easy approval for a funeral cost plan. However, buyers looking for large plans for retirement or other financial planning would find better products with other companies.

Anyone can file a claim with Globe Life, including a spouse, child, another beneficiary, or a family spokesperson (including a representative from a funeral home). Providing the following information will expedite the claims process:

  • Life insurance policy number
  • Contact info for the beneficiary
  • Official death certificate
  • Copy of obituary
  • Coroner's and/or police report (in the case of accident, homicide, or suicide)

Once gathered, mail all documents to the following:

Globe Life Inc.

PO Box 8076

Attn: Life Claims Department

McKinney, TX 75070

On average, it takes Globe Life 10-15 days to receive, log and process the information included in the above documents. Please bear in mind processing times can vary. Globe Life representatives will notify you should additional information be needed.

It only takes a few minutes to complete its easy online application. Once approved, Globe Life will send a copy of your policy via mail.

Obtaining additional life insurance coverage for family members is easy with Globe Life's e-ServiceCenter. New applications for adults and children are accessible with your current login information if you have an existing plan. New customers can also apply online or over the phone.

Once you've begun the claims process, Globe Life offers phone and online-based customer service. Call Customer Service at 1-888-650-4081 or visit the company's eServiceCenter to check the status of a claim you've filed.

Globe Life vs. State Farm Life Insurance

Globe Life prides itself on simple, standard coverage delivering death benefits topping out at $100,000 compared to more robust options from State Farm . Globe Life focuses mainly on small funeral policies or accident coverage. State Farm offers larger payouts and options like its Survivorship Universal Life Insurance, which covers two individuals. So, for example, a husband and wife could buy a policy, and the value would be based on the couple's combined lifespan and qualifications.

Globe Life scored 798 on the latest JD Power US Individual Life Insurance Study. In short, the company earns consistently high marks from customers. Still, State Farm outranks Globe Life with a score of 843. With State Farm, applicants may have to submit to a medical exam. But the company offers more comprehensive policies to pay out in more flexible circumstances. It also has more permanent life insurance options to meet diverse needs. Most importantly, buyers can bundle State Farm life insurance with homeowners, auto, and other State Farm plans.

As you might expect from its JD Power rankings, State Farm customers have a lot to say about the package it provides. Mb of Palm Springs, CA, left a review on ConsumerAffairs , saying, "State Farm may or may not be the cheapest. However, their customer service is outstanding. They proactively contact me to review my insurance once a year. They always answer my questions quickly and clearly. If they don't know immediately, they are willing to admit they don't know and always follow-up ASAP."

State Farm Life Insurance Review

Globe Life vs. Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance

Globe Life has become known for its quick and flexible whole and term life policies. Especially with its accidental death policies, Globe Life offers no medical exam options with fast approvals. Mutual of Omaha is not quite as cheap. Term Life Express is the company's only option for life insurance with no medical exam. But it comes with significantly higher limits than any of Globe Life's policies for all causes of death (not just approved accidents) up to $300,000. The company's strong financial backing means building cash value is easy, as evidenced by options including Universal Life Insurance (boasting coverage over $1 million) and Indexed Universal Life Insurance (a flexible albeit risky way to build cash value).

Both companies have whole life policies. Again, Mutual of Omaha offers a diverse range of policies with higher benefits. Mutual of Omaha customers can enjoy accelerated death benefits in the event of a terminal disease and other riders. Its underwriting may take longer than Globe Life's, but the higher benefits will pay off in the long run for approved customers. At this time, both companies enjoy high customer satisfaction rankings with JD Power.

Most importantly, Mutual of Omaha will likely never offer the bargain policies Globe Life does. But customers still find pricing reasonable. Wendy of Enola, PA, reviewed Mutual of Omaha on ConsumerAffairs , saying, "I have a practical and effective insurance policy with great and affordable rates. Company has an excellent and easy to use website."

Mutual of Omaha Life Insurance

Globe Life vs. SBLI

SBLI offers Cherish Life final expense insurance up to $35,000 in coverage with two significant benefits. SBLI customers can apply until age 80, and beneficiaries can use benefits to pay for any of the insured's expenses. Globe Life has a cut-off age of 75 to apply. Both companies offer whole and term life insurance policies. Both companies also have no medical exam life insurance options.

At this time, Globe Life's listed policy limits are low. Most policies cover funeral costs. Plans with higher benefits are mostly accident policies (it only pays out if you die due to a covered accident). SBLI doesn't list its limits on its site. However, it focuses on whole and term life insurance for any cause of death.

The customer reviews tell a great story about SBLI. Trustpilot reviewer Matthew says, "SBLI has always been a notch above all others in the insurance industry. We have had policies with them for about 8 years, and have never experienced anything but great service, honest and candid feedback, and they deliver exactly what they communicate!"

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed Globe Life Insurance

Life insurance companies are compared based on product quality, insurance riders, net performance scores, pricing, and customer service. A diverse array of life insurance products is used to compare death benefit plans with life insurance designed for long-term financial planning. Opinions expressed here are wholly based on facts gathered.

Ratings are not decided based solely on marketing or single online reviews. Instead, we gather a broad mix of information to rank all insurance products consistently and fairly. Therefore, the best way to ensure you find the right policy is to utilize a qualified agent when shopping for life insurance.

You can read more about our rating system here .

What Does "No Medical Exam" Mean With Globe Life?

None of the life insurance products at Globe Life require a medical or physical exam. Instead, the insurer uses a series of health-related questions (part of the company's online application) to determine eligibility. Full transparency, especially with preexisting conditions, is essential. Dishonesty of any kind puts the insured at risk of policy cancellation or unpaid death benefits. You may be eligible for a small funeral costs policy even if you're denied a more comprehensive life insurance policy.

100% agree with the other reviewers. This travel insurance is a TOTAL scam. We missed our connection in both directions (Heathrow- grrr), AND they lost our luggage. I jumped through all the hoops-- provided all the documentation, photos, receipts and 8 months later, we haven't seen a penny. DO NOT USE this company.

I bought a Generali insurance policy for a cruise which unfortunately had to be cancelled. Reporting the claim was easy., but after that it was all downhill. Reaching the claims adjuster was just about impossible. In fact, reaching anyone with customer service was equally impossible. I must have called every number that I could find on the internet and it was a big bust. Emails to customer service were a joke. Over a dozen calls and messages left on the claims adjuster's voicemail rarely got a response. I was at one time a claims adjuster and know how bad the adjuster was. They really need to fix their customer service problems. I could not in good faith recommend them to anyone.

Photo of D T.

Submitted a claim. Their "service representative" never once responded to any of my emails, even when mine were direct responses to requests for information. They closed my claim having done absolutely nothing with it, claiming I sent them none of the necessary documents. Again, I sent everything they requested (twice). Absolute scam.

Don't buy any insurance from these people!! I booked a hotel in May 2023 for a December 2023 trip to Singapore. Because I booked the room 7 months in advance, I thought it would be a good idea to buy the "Hotel Booking Protection". Well turns out it is impossible to get a refund!! I am going to take these people to court. I have already spoken to the California Insurance Commissioners office and I will file a formal complaint Later today. Please heed this warning!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!! Frank

I purchased travel insuance from this company for my trip to Delray Beach, FL to begin on 12/28/2022. This trip was insured under the wording "travel interuption". With the SW Airline fiasco We lost the first 2 days of our stay at a vrbo property. I submitted my claim to recover the first 2 days cost that we were unable to use (again because of SW Airlines). We ended up having to rent a car and drive down there from Chicago. Camille Esser from the claims department denied my claim initially because it was only good if reason for airline cancelation was du to mechanical breakdown or a strike. I came back to her with wording from the policy that states "delay of common carrier you are scheduled to travel on". She refused this again. DO NOT USE THIS TRAVEL INSURANCE COMPANY
