Trekking America - Small Group Treks

Trekking holidays America have never been more popular. The vast wilderness of the national parks offer so many routes and spectacular views along the way, it's a dream for many.

Some treks of course are very famous such as the John Muir Trail and the Pacific Northwest Trail to name but two, there are of course many more.

Top 10 Treks In America

Here are the top 10 trekking and hiking holidays in the us:, john muir trail - 23 days, pacific northwest trail - 8 days, san fran to vegas: parks, canyons, valleys - 9 days, grand alaska camping - 12 days, deserts and canyons of the southwest - 14 days, grand canyon and rocky mountain trails - 15 days, walking the western us national parks - 10 days, yellowstone wildlife trails - hotels - 12 days, hiking utah's big 5 - 9 days, hiking sequoia, kings canyon, and yosemite - 8 days, who goes on the treks.

All of our US treks are small groups and guided. Groups are usually made up of around 10 people with typically equal mix of gender.

Usually around half of any group are solo travellers and the other half couples or friends.

Ages range from early twenties to over seventy but the average age is typically 39 ish.

The type of people who enjoy these trips really varies, we find the most important factor is the desire to be in the wild, away from city life and general life drama.

If you're interested in any departure date we can find out the make up of the group for you, just make contact with us by phone, chat or email:)

How Fit Do I Need To Be?

Each trek has a physical rating form 1 to 5. 1 is low meaning you don't really need to be fit at all where as 5 is challenging and we're recommend some training and an average fitness level.

Most of the US treks fall between 2 to 4, so quite easy to quite tough. In all cases we think it is a good idea to do even a little bit of training such as long walks with aback pack and if you're getting new walking shoes, get them early and break them in!

I Am A Solo Traveller

Don't worry, at least half of our customers overall are also solo travellers and our tours and holidays are designed with solo travellers in mind. We know it can be daunting if you're a solo traveller or of course it's your first time travelling alone. All of our team have travelled alone and we're very happy to talk you through it.

Usually about half of any group is made up of solo travellers. We pair solo travellers together of the same gender and age (where we can) to share a room which keeps costs down.

You can of course opt for your won room on most treks and adventures usually for a little extra.

Each trek is guided and the guide is there to make sure everyone is happy and safe. If you have a problem maybe with gear, your room mate, food etc the guide will be able to help and can usually fix any problems that arise!

Is Vegetarian Food Available?

Yes. All tours have  vegetarian options.

Is Wifi Available?

Not always. This depends upon where you are, which net work you're with etc...

What Gear Do I Need?

Each trek has a brochure you can download which includes a 'what to pack' list as each trek is different.

However, there are some essentials you may require:

- Good trekking shoes

- Light weight shorts and trousers

- Sun cream

- Sunglasses

- Insect Repellent

- Waterproofs

- Water Bottle

Trek America Review: An Incredible USA Road Trip

California Callin' Trek America iTrekHere

I’m back from an incredible USA group tour! From camping, to the activities on offer, and the group dynamic, find out all about my experience in my Trek America review.

As I edged towards seat 31A on my Air Norwegian flight from San Francisco to London I felt pretty sad. I hadn’t set off yet but I knew this was the onset of post-travel blues. This one was going to be A LOT harder to get over than most.

Rewind two weeks and I was waiting anxiously at the airport in London not knowing who I’d be spending the next few weeks with. We met at the gate, introduced ourselves, giggled nervously, compared what we’d packed and prepared for the 10 hour flight. Final destination? California. Reason for travel? Trek America’s big campaign #iTrekHere. Along with 7 other specially selected bloggers and vloggers, I would be road tripping from LA to San Fran. So who else was coming? Amy , Maddie and Josie from the world of fashion and beauty, Laura who has a comedy YouTube channel, travel blogger Scott , and superstar YouTuber Helen  and fiancé Matt. We would be sharing rooms, tents, stories and creating some unforgettable memories.

Check out the video, then read more of my Trek America review below.

I’m a big fan of both solo travel and group travel. Last month I wrote about where my wanderlust began – funnily enough during a trip with Trek America to Mexico 5 years ago . It inspired me to see more of the world, and now here I was 5 years later being invited to explore somewhere I’d always wanted to visit. California Callin’ s route would take us from the glitz and glam of LA, to the beautiful beach town of Santa Barbara, the waterfalls of Big Sur, the incredible rugged landscapes of Yosemite National Park, and end in buzzing San Francisco.

Ready for a few highlights? It’s going to be hard to pick but here goes…!

Oh the bright lights of LA! A sprawling city with pockets of landmarks made famous in films. Our tour guide for the week Darin, took us to the key spots and started to adjust to a tour dominated by social media, photos and vlogs. We joked that he’d be a YouTube superstar by the end of the week, and sure enough it wasn’t long before he was vlogging to camera!

Kicking off at Venice Beach, we checked out skate parks, surfer dudes and channelled our inner Arnies on Muscle Beach. While feebly hitting a punchball, I attracted a local personal trainer who wanted to give me some tips. “No not like that, punch it like you mean it. Does that feel good? I want you to shout IT FEELS GOOD.” My little arms flailed as I shouted “it feels good!” not wanting to deal with the consequences if I didn’t!

After snapping photos of cool street art it was time to head to the glitzy side of the city. Beverley Hills with its iconic sign and Rodeo Drive with its designer stores, and memories of Pretty Woman. It was every bit as glam as I’d hoped. Hey, we even went in the Wilshire Hotel – yes the Pretty Woman hotel! Fashionistas Maddie and Josie  were in their element, looking every bit the LA stars as they shopped in Chanel.

After a pit stop at Panera for deli sandwiches and healthy salads, it was time for #iTrekHere to hit Hollywood. When I first set eyes on the Hollywood sign, adrenaline pumped! So iconic, it was something I’d seen in countless films and TV shows and now here I was, right beneath it. Although the LA sun was beating down, it wasn’t a challenging walk, and along with the sign, there were incredible views of the whole city. It sprawled like some kind of  toytown.

We finished our whirlwind tour of LA by checking out some local drinking spots. The Sips of Old Hollywood tour run by Urban Adventures took us down the Walk of Fame, showed us where Marilyn used to sip cocktails, Walt Disney dreamed up his magical tales, and to a site of a few ghostly goings on. Don’t worry, this was very much a hands on tour and as I sipped on my Moscow mule in Boardners, I felt every bit the Hollywood superstar.

After a late night stop at Hollywood’s most famous hot dog store Pinks , we headed back to the hotel to crash out. It had been a long day ticking off the LA bucket list, but we’d done it!

Attempting to work out on Muscle Beach, L.A.

Santa Barbara

Our introduction to the cool, upmarket beach town of Santa Barbara started with a hippie named One Feather. He talked about peace and love as he showed us his intricately decorated van. A true eccentric, it was hard not to be fascinated by him. Santa Barbara is known for its beach, pier and State Street (the main shopping boulevard). While some of the group headed out stand up paddle boarding, the rest of us went in search of frozen yoghurt. Mooching around the cute shops, cafes, and exploring a pop up farmers market felt like the perfect contrast to our hectic first day in LA.

That night we stayed in a campsite. Oh, and this is where my camping virginity would be taken!

Only a few of us had never put tents up before so we were quickly selected for Darin’s demonstration. Poles, nails, ground sheets, rain covers… It was all jargon to me and I had never really understood why anyone would choose to camp! But as we gathered around the stove to cook a pasta dinner, enjoyed a few drinks and chatted away, I started to see the appeal. As I bedded down for the night with my new tent buddies Amy and Laura , we felt closer than ever!

Up and out early, Darin had described the day as a ‘driving day’ – i.e. stock up on snacks and pick someone with good music taste to manage the playlist. Oreos in hand, Kings of Leon blasting out we drove the Pacific Coast Highway. It turned out this wasn’t a mere driving day, it was accompanied by some of the most spectacular road trip scenery you’ll ever see! A Big Sur road trip isn’t just any old road trip! High cliffs overlooking the Pacific, suspension bridges, waterfalls and more. We continuously reached for our cameras, leaning over one another to get the killer shots.

We stopped several times at beautiful viewpoints including Hearst Bay for lunch and Piedras Blancas Beach to see the elephant seals. I’d never seen so many seals – they looked like an expanse of giant rocks on the beach. A few moments later we spotted the distant spouts of whales and dolphins swimming close to the shore. So much for it just being a driving day!

The final stop before the campsite was at McWay Falls, a picturesque 80 ft waterfall which crashes down onto the beach. When you Google ‘Big Sur’ – this is what comes up, and it’s one place that looks just as good in reality as the photos online!

Feeling like camping pros we put up our tents, enjoyed a delicious fajita dinner, and toasted marshmallows for smores on the campfire.

The next morning, we trekked to Pfeiffer Falls, a hike of around 3 miles through a beautiful forest of redwood trees. The sun beamed down creating beautiful sunny patches in the woods – even more spectacular once the waterfall came into view.

Magical scenery, jutting rocks, waterfalls, forests and potential bear sightings made this the part of the trip that appealed to me most.

It turned out to be every bit as magical as I’d imagined, if not more so. The drive into the park was breathtaking with huge mountains, pine trees, beautiful canyons, and a river complete with ferocious looking rapids. The landscapes were vast, making us feel very small indeed (even more than I usually do!) Tour guide Darin pointed out rock climbers on El Capitan (the most famous rock feature) – but they were barely visible to the human eye. Talk about feeling small!

We couldn’t wait to check out the giant sequoia trees in Tuolumne Grove. Over 3000 years old, the enormous trees again made us feel extremely small. Flecks of golden sun seeped majestically through the trees as we clambered in and out of cavernous old tree trunks.

While in Yosemite, I chose to follow the Mist Trail – a medium difficulty hike which took us up to see Nevada and Vernal Falls. While I’d say I’m reasonably fit, it was still a challenging hike, mostly due its steepness. The hike paid off when I saw the incredible panoramic views.

As we stopped for gas on the way back to the campsite, a wonderful surprise awaited us. Greg from Travizeo (our videographer who spent the week capturing our journey on #iTrekHere) ran to the van, grabbed his camera and sprinted across the parking lot. Unsure of what he’d seen, a handful of us did the same. A bear! A big black bear roaming free in the forest, crossing the road and going about his business. It was magnificent, beautiful and elegant. I couldn’t believe we’d seen a bear in the wild!

Trekking through Tuolumne Grove, Yosemite

San Francisco

Surviving four nights of camping, virtually no internet and a few shower experiences I’d rather forget, we made our way to our final stop San Francisco. It was the city everyone raved about. And soon enough – I’d be raving about it too!

Over the next 48 hours we would check out several cool neighbourhoods, sail a catamaran under the Golden Gate Bridge, escape from Alcatraz, and party until dawn. It was the perfect end to an incredible week.

First on our hit list – the Mission District a.k.a where the hipsters hang out. Covered in eye-catching street art, it was home to a handful of trendy boutiques, super cool restaurants and a tonne of taco joints. It was a cool place to kick off our time in SF.

Next it was off to Haight–Ashbury – famous for being the home of the summer of love in the 60s. Sure enough, it had retained its hippie vibe with tie-die stores, small boutiques, and a certain ‘scent’ in the air!

Tourist areas Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 were brightly lit and filled with alluring gift shops, scents of cookies and big name chains. Unexpectedly, it was also home to a lot of sealions – spotted as we disembarked our catamaran. So cute! I also LOVED visiting Lombard Street – also known as the most crooked street in the world.

San Francisco is home to the biggest Chinatown outside of China, and I absolutely loved exploring the weird supermarkets and kitsch stores… even more so because of my love of pandas!

While spending the morning doing an audio tour of a former prison might not sound like a reason to get out of bed, our trip to Alcatraz was a real highlight. The tour offered a fascinating insight into the various attempted escapes and the big name criminals who used to be imprisoned there. It was eerie at times, but really struck a chord.

I can’t believe how much we crammed into our 9-day tour through California. It was the perfect taster of what the state has to offer, and somewhere I can’t wait to explore more of.

San Francisco from the Alcatraz ferry

Along with special memories of the places we visited, I left with a great bunch of new friends. Since returning our group Whatsapp has continued to buzz with in jokes, funny photos and videos from the trip. We arrived as individuals but we definitely left as friends, something I really thank Trek America for. Once again, they delivered… here’s to the next #iTrekHere!

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my Trek America review, and it comes in handy if you’re considering booking a group tour with the company. Any questions, let me know below!

Thanks to the team at Trek America and Visit California  for inviting me to be part of #iTrekHere. F ind out more about Trek America and the  California Callin’  tour.  As always, opinions are my own!

Wow that looks great – the perfect combination between urban and nature! I agree with your sentiment by the way, I am also a big fan of solo and group travel. This group seemed to have been the perfect mix!

Yeah it’s a great route to take in a bit of everything! The national park was a refreshing break after the hustle and bustle of LA… but then I was SO excited for San Fran at the end too! 🙂

This looks like such a fun trip! What a great way to meet new people and share your experiences! How did you find out about this trip? One day I’ll get to Venice Beach and to see the Walk of Fame. Thanks so much for sharing

It was a great trip – especially meeting new people on the road. We were such a family by the end! I was invited on it but you can book it via their website too. Deffo recommend. Cx

Oh well, that’a a tour I’d like to do!

Oh you should Luca! Definitely worth it – a great stress-free way to see some amazing places!

What an amazing trip and you could share it with others from the bloggos/ and vloggosphere. You do not get the chance to meet and travel with so many likeminded people (that are also working in the same field), so that must have been amazing.

That’s so true AnneMarie – sometimes it’s fun to travel with people who really get what you do. Although WOW did we have our cameras out a lot!!

I bet you did. I have been on a couple of press trips with journalists and it’s so much harder because by the time I am done with photos, they are already way ahead of me. With bloggers, we are all slow together.^^

Yeah I know what you mean! Especially when you’re videoing too! We definitely earn those cocktails at the end of the day 🙂

Ah, don’t even get me started on the video process. I get dizzy so much from constantly kneeling, bending and then climbing things to get shots. You definitely earned those chocktails!

Definitely! I can’t wait to put my Trek America video together but it’s going to take a while!

These pictures look AMAZING Chlo – so glad you had the best time! I’d love to trek the same route, it sounds awesome! Yosemite is a must on my wanderlust list!

Hayley xo http://www.frockmeimfamous.com

Hey Hayley! Thanks for your comment lovely! It was an amazing trip – hope you get out there soon. You’ll love it – esp Yosemite. Pics just don’t do it justice! Cx

I’ll be in California in two weeks and your post and photos are making me hop with excitement! I won’t be able to see as much as you but we have San Francisco, Yosemite and Big Sur on the itinerary – I can’t wait!!

Ahhh that’s so exciting! Yosemite was definitely the highlight for me as it’s just soooo stunning… but I also loved SF. It’s the kind of city I can imagine living in!

This is amazing – I did a CA road trip 7 years ago and really feel like I need to repeat it! Love the video as well 😀

Thanks Kathi – yeah it was such a great route. Really varied! Thanks for checking it all out 🙂

G Adventures vs. Trek America: Which Operator is Right For You?

trek america family tours

Considering booking an epic adventure but having trouble deciding between two operators who offer seemingly similar trips? You’ve come to the right place! Read on to learn more about G Adventures  and Trek America to determine which operator is best suited to you.

G Adventures  has tours in North America starting at roughly USD $115 per day, and in Latin America starting around USD $65 per day.

Trek America offers 54 tours in North and Central America, starting at approximately USD $110 per day.

For this price, both operators offer a guide, transport and a range of accommodation styles. Please see the accommodation and transport sections for the breakdown in differences of G Adventures and Trek America, as this can also be dependant on the individual tour.

Group size, age requirements and travel styles

Both  G Adventures  and  Trek America  run small group tours, with group sizes for both operators averaging 10-15 travellers.

Trek America has an age limit in place, while only some of the tours that G Adventures run have an age limit. Trek America also has an age limit for younger travellers in place. The groups of a Trek America tour are normally 10-12 people in size, and the age range for Trek America tours is 18-38 years old. This means you will be sharing experiences with travellers of a similar mindset to yourself.

G Adventures has a much larger selection of trips being a worldwide operator, and have divided their trips into different travel styles; Classic Tours, National Geographic (for more in-depth experiences), Active tours, Family (specifically for families travelling with kids), Rail (primary transport by train), Marine (primary transport by boat) and Local Living (local cultural focus), and more.

G Adventures has small group tours, so you can expect a maximum group size of 15, but often the average is just 10. While they accommodate specifically for adventure travellers on Active tours, and children with their Family tours, there is no upper age limit, although travellers with pre-existing medical conditions are required to complete a medical questionnaire.

Physical requirements

With both  G Adventures  and  Trek America , you will need a reasonable level of fitness to be able to take part in exploring a destination, carrying your own luggage from transport to accommodation, etc.

As G Adventures primarily use public transport, you may also need to carry your luggage from accommodation to transport hubs etc. With both Trek America and G Adventures, generally, no strenuous activities are included, although some optional excursions, if you decide to do them, may involve swimming, bike riding or short hikes.

Depending on the tour you are wanting to do, this will be found in the detailed itinerary, as there may be times throughout specialty tours (hiking, diving etc) where a certain level of fitness will be required. This will be outlined in the itinerary of each tour.

Accommodation

G Adventures  accommodation depends on the trip style you’ve chosen and can range from camping to hotels, to trains or even boats. You can share a room as a solo traveller at no extra cost or pay more to have your own room.

You will be sharing a room with another traveller of the same gender, but you also may have the option to pay extra for your own room (known as a single supplement).

Trek America  offers camping tours, for the ‘all American outdoor experience’, as well as a range of Budget Lodging Tours, if you would prefer a bed and a roof at night. This often means that accommodation is away from large city centres and closer to nature. On camping tours, they provide all the equipment you’ll need apart from a sleeping bag! Regardless of the trip style chosen, accommodation and transport are included in the price of all tours.

Transportation and guides

G Adventures  tours will in most cases use public transportation as well as local guides. This is done so that travellers can experience the local transportation system and cultures, and public transportation allows face-to-face interaction with local people.

Some G Adventures tours, including Superior, Comfort Class, and most adventures in Africa, will use private transportation. It is best to check the details of the tour to see which transportation style will be used, as it can vary from tour to tour, and different destinations.

The guides used are usually locals from the area or region that you are travelling. In the USA and Canada, Trek America has private vans to get you around, and their guides are all American guides, with a lifetime of local experience having grown up the region. The private transportation will be driven by your guide and will have WiFi on board.

For some tours operating in Central America (Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica) Trek America use BOLTS – Buses or Local Transport, which means on these tours you’ll get around using buses, water taxis and collectivos. These varied modes of transport mean you get around affordably and ensure you get to experience local life.

Destinations

G Adventures  operates tours in  Latin America ,  Asia ,  Europe ,  Africa ,  Australia/Oceania  and  North America .

Trek America  has tours to  North America  ( USA  and  Canada ), as well as tours to  Latin America .

Trek America Freedom Trail East Coast USA Tour Review

This post was originally written as a review of the Trek America Freedom Trail – a road trip of the East Cost of the USA. Sadly Trek America are no longer around, but the tour route is an ideal road trip itinerary so I’ve left the post as it is for now.

Welcome to the Trek America Freedom Trail – a road trip taking in the northeastern US states. This is the perfect East Coast USA tour for solo travellers, or for anyone who wants to connect with like-minded people in a fun, small-group setting whilst seeing all the very best that the USA has to offer!

From Philly Cheesesteaks to Boston Lobster rolls, from a boat ride into Niagara Falls to a horse and buggy ride around Amish Country, from the monuments of Washington DC to the history of the Boston Freedom Trail… this is everything you could possibly want from a tour of East Coast USA, and it’s all packed into just one week!

I took this tour through the northeast of the US with Trek America a couple of weeks ago, and absolutely loved it. Great company, fun evenings at the campsite, and some of the biggest highlights that the northern East Coast has to offer. Below is my review of the Trek America Freedom Trail, to help you decide if this trip is for you…

East Coast USA Road Trip Route

Philadelphia, washington dc, amish country and lancaster, niagara falls, camping with trek america, costs, more info, and further reading.

girl Capitol Building Washington DC

The Trek America Freedom Trail is the perfect East Coast USA tour, especially if you don’t have a lot of time. It stops off at all the major highlights of the north-eastern states, taking in Philadelphia, Washington, Amish Country, the Niagara Falls, and Boston in a big loop that starts and ends in New York. Here’s a quick itinerary breakdown to give you an idea, but bear in mind that it can change slightly from tour to tour.

Days 1-2: New York* – Philadelphia- Washington DC Day 3: Lancaster (Discovering Amish Country) Day 4: Niagara Falls Days 5-6: Boston Day 7: Boston – New York

East Coast USA tour route highlights

*The tour actually started in New Jersey, from the Newark airport hotel, so there wasn’t a day exploring NYC.

I’d recommend booking a day or two in NYC itself, either before or after the Freedom Trail. After might be better, so that if any of your new tour friends are also staying on, you can make plans together. A few people on my trip did that – but I had to head straight off to California for my next adventure!

Check out my post for the coolest things to do in NYC !

Stops for Your East Coast USA Road Trip

On the first day of our East Coast USA tour, we drove from New Jersey to Washington, with an afternoon spent in Philadelphia along the way. It was brief, but we managed to see a few key highlights. The Rocky Steps, Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, and the super funky South Street.

Philadelphia - East Coast USA Tour

But for me, the biggest highlight was trying my first Philly Cheesesteak. We headed to Jim’s South St , arriving just before the queue – which was already out the door – got really mental. This is considered one of the best places to get a Philly Cheesesteak so it’s crazy popular. It was also CRAZY good! I stuffed my face with an enormous, greasy, cheesy mess of a sandwich, looked like an absolute animal doing so, and have zero regrets. It was SO GOOD.

East Coast USA tour highlights - Philadelphia

Next stop was Washington DC. We camped for two nights just outside the city, so we had a full day there to sightsee on the second day of the Trek America Freedom Trail tour. It also just so happened to be Memorial Day, so there was a huge parade on in the afternoon which was a great little addition.

East Coast USA Road Trip Itinerary

We spent most of the day exploring the National Mall, which is where all those iconic Washington DC monuments are found. The National Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and – of course – the Capitol Building.

In DC they have a bike rental scheme like the Santander Cycles in London, Capital Bikeshare , which only costs $8 for a 24-hour pass. One of my absolute highlights was just cycling along the National Mall, taking in the sights (and enjoying a bit of breeze on my skin because it was ROASTING that day!).

One of the more unusual stops on the Trek America Freedom Trail tour was Lancaster . We headed there on the third day to see a side of America I’d never seen before, and one that was totally different from the cities we’d just visited.

East Coast USA Road Trip Itinerary

Lancaster is Amish Country in Pennsylvania. This is America’s oldest Amish settlement, where thousands still live the traditional, “ Plain ” lifestyle they’ve been living for centuries. We stopped off in Intercourse PA (lot’s of giggles and posing with the sign) to take a traditional buggy ride through Amish Country – visiting a working dairy farm, eating some homemade cookies, and meeting the farm puppies! It was so different to the America I’m used to, and such an interesting glimpse of another culture and way of living.

One unmissable stop on any East Coast USA tour is Niagara Falls, so of course it’s included on the Trek America Freedom Trail. On the fourth day, we headed to upstate New York for a full day at this stunning natural wonder. It’s been on my bucket list for ages so it was definitely the stop I was most excited for!

Trek America Freedom Trail Highlights

Not only did we take a boat tour on the iconic Maid of the Mist , getting drenched as we cruised right up into the spray of the horseshoe fall, but we also had time to hop over the bridge into Canada! That’s right, you can enter Canada on foot for the day without a visa – as long as you know your US visa allows for re-entry (if you have an ESTA you’ll be fine). It was great to see the falls from the other side, whilst eating a quick poutine on Canadian soil.

Another highlight that day was our campsite, on the shore of Lake Ontario. It was a really peaceful, beautiful spot! We watched the sunset from the edge of the lake, before ending the night with a campfire and s’mores… basically, the perfect camping experience!

Maid of the Mist Boat Tour Niagara Falls USA

Boston was probably my favourite city on our East Coast USA tour. It really took me by surprise – so much history and culture. This is one of the oldest cities in the USA, and it’s where the American Revolution was born, so there’s a lot to learn – but not in a boring way!

small group tours of america

We spent the day walking the Freedom Trail , a 2.5-mile path marked out with red brick through downtown Boston. It winds its way from Boston Common to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, taking in 16 locations that are tied to the history of the city and the American Revolution. I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know much about that chapter of history, so it was really fascinating to wander along, guidebook in hand, and delve into the story of each of the sites.

We also found time to enjoy some of Boston’s more contemporary culture. Rooftop bars, lobster rolls from swanky Row 34, Quincy Market, and one last dinner with the group in Chinatown. Boston is also a great place from which to explore more of New England if I had more time. I’d love to visit Boston in the fall to see the famous New England colours!

East Coast USA Tour highlights

From Boston, the last day of the Trek Amerca Freedom Trail is spent heading back to New York area, where many of the group went on to hang out in NYC. I had to head straight to Newark airport to fly down to California to start my next adventure, but in retrospect I wish I’d had a couple of days exploring NYC as well!

What’s the Accommodation Like?

Trek America have a few different trip styles, so what your accommodation is like depends on which tour style you choose. The Original Tours all feature either camping or budget lodging options (or a mix of both), while the Plus Tours are designed to be a bit more comfortable, with hotel accommodation.

The budget lodging options can be anything, really. Motels, hotels, hostels, cabins, lodges, even ranches. You’ll have a real bed and a roof over your head, so if camping really isn’t your thing opt for a BLT (budget lodging tour).

cabin at KOA campsite in PA on Trek America tour

The Trek America Freedom Trail was a mix of both budget accommodation and camping. We stayed at some really nice campgrounds: the one in Washington had a pool and mini golf, and I’ve already mentioned how much I loved the one near Niagara Falls! We also spent one night in cabins at the Lancaster campground, which we paid $10 each to upgrade to because a storm hit. And on the last two nights, we stayed in a really nice hostel in downtown Boston; basic but clean, comfy, and WAY better than a lot of the hostels I’ve stayed in over the years.

Camping is my favourite way to do a Trek trip, as it feels like a real adventure. Plus, everyone bands together to make camp. You all put up tents, cook, clean, and pack up together, so it’s a real bonding experience, and a great way to make friends fast.

small group tours for solo travellers

Trek provide the tents and camping equipment, so you only need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. Or, you can buy both when you arrive and donate them to a thrift store or charity when the trip ends. It’s all decent quality camping stuff and makes for a really comfy camping experience, and the campgrounds Trek America chose are all fantastic. Great facilities with hot showers and decent bathrooms – even free WiFi at some!

I travelled with road-trip specialist TrekAmerica on the seven-day Freedom Trail tour. The tour costs from £879 per person. This price includes four nights camping, including camping fees and equipment (excluding sleeping bag), two nights budget lodging, services of a TrekAmerica tour leader, and private transportation throughout with free WiFi.

You noted Boston for it’s history, but not Philadelphia? It’s got more historic sites than Boston does, and played a larger role in the American Revolution and creation of the country. You kind of have it backwards.

Interesting! This post was a write-up of the tour we did, and we didn’t have very much time in Philadelphia so there wasn’t time to see many historic sites. We had two days in Boston so happened to spend more time on the history there :) Next time I come back I’ll try to spend a bit more time in Philly and delve a bit deeper into the history there.

Don’t let Philadelphia poster bother you. Yes, Philadelphia had an important role in the revolution but Americans see Boston as the home of the revolution. Boston also did a better job preserving sites than many other cities.

Thanks Victoria! I’m sure both cities have a lot of history but yeah, that was just the way the tour with Trek America was shaped. We saw more contemporary stuff in Philly and more history in Boston. I think you’re right in saying that more of the sites were preserved in Boston than in other cities, there was a lot to see :)

What to expect on a Trek America trip

  • by Dave Brett

What to expect on a Trek America trip

Once you’ve been on a Trek America trip and experienced the adventure and exhilaration for yourself, then this whole guide will make a lot more sense. Until then though you can read all about my trip and imagine it for yourself.

I wanted to give you an insight into the fun and wacky goings-on that you should prepare for on your Trek America adventure.

Be sure to read more about my Trek America Mountie tour across the Canadian Rockies to get an idea of what I got up to.

It’s a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy this post.

You will fall in love with your incredible, awesome Trek America guide

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 245

The highlight of my Trek America trip has to be my incredibly awesome tour guide Heather, who made sure that without any fuss the whole trip went as smoothly as possible.

Heather is a complete champ when it comes to Canada, and is full of top tips and knowledge of awesome things to do along your route.

It’s not easy looking after a bus full of grown up teenagers, but Heather made it all go incredibly well and made the trip for all of us – she was a big part of the group.

Normally on Trek America you get one guide, but we were lucky enough to have not one but two on our very special trip.

Willy added a sprinkle of fun on top of our incredible group.

Willy has just started out with Trek America and passed his training with Heather – he will surely have an awesome future ahead of him. Couldn’t have asked for two better guides, they made the trip for sure.

Shop till you drop and Stock up at Wallmart

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 40

No trip to North America would be complete without first stopping off at Wallmart – one of the biggest supermarket chains on offer.

It’s like Tesco’s on steroids, and it has to be seen to be believed.

Normally at the start of your Trek America trip, your first stop will be to stock up before you hit the road giving you a chance to buy the necessities for your trip.

This gives you a wonderful opportunity to shop till you drop in this massive supermarket complex.

Remember to return to your bus on time and spend your time wisely exploring the isles. From lucky charms to sleeping bags, they have it all.

That’s a wrap, get used to it

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 373

I’m pretty sure that most of our lunches were served in a tortilla wrap.

When you think about it, the tortilla wrap is the perfect road trip lunch as you can put all your fillings inside and wrap it up quickly without any mess. It’s very practical and ideal for these type of trips.

Get creative and be sure to jazz up your tortilla wrap with a different filling each day.

Who knew that hummus would go well with cheese, it weirdly does.

Never before have I witnessed the full blown diversity of a tortilla wrap like on a Trek America tour.

Be creative and send me your personal creations on the back of a postcard.

Your first day camping won’t be your last

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 1

Get ready for camping out in the great outdoors amongst the wilderness.

Everything you will need will be perfectly packed into the Trek America trailer, so be sure to pay attention on the first day when the ground rules are laid out at the trailer briefing.

Gather your bearings with this incredibly well packed trailer so you know your way around as it – it can be a bit like Mary Poppins’s bag on the inside.

Inside, you will find everything you need to pitch your tent.

Learn how to pitch your tent on the first day and then on your last day you will be packing it down like a pro with one hand blindfolded.

Then you will start to wonder why you ever bothered with hotels in the first place, as camping is way more fun once you get into the swing of it.

Creativity in pop up kitchen

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 428

This is no gourmet dining feast, but you might be surprised by the results when your fellow bus buddies pull out next level top chief skills and create some culinary magic.

Each night you will take it in turns with your fellow travellers to cook dinner and put together a shopping list to cook for everyone in the group.

Just take a moment’s thought for the cleaning up team when you’re done cooking as you don’t want to task them with having to wash too many pots and pans.

Have fun cooking and see what you will come up with as a team.

We had an incredible mixture of Mexican bowls, Thai Curry, sweet and sour chicken noodles and even a final BBQ to finish it off on a high note.

Cooking with your mates can be fun with Trek America.

Get your playlist set up well in advance

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 163

It’s your time to shine! Make sure you setup your Spotify playlist and download it offline for when it’s your day on the bus to be the DJ for the day.

A lot is riding on your tunes to set the mood of the bus for the day so make sure your beats are on point to be the music hero for the rest of the bus ride and get the energy levels flowing.

Flashback 90’s is always a winner!

It gets cosy on the Trek America bus

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 90

What I liked most about the Trek America trip was the size of the bus.

All together we were a group of 14 in a van size bus and it was the perfect size to host the perfect amount of people on a road trip-type adventure.

It’s not overcrowded and enough people to get to know everyone well over the course of 10 days. And it surely did just that! The hardest part of Trek America is the end when you have to say goodbye your guide and bus buddies.

Trek America, it’s been emotional.

Have fun on your Trek America trip

Canada Rockies TrekAmerica Itrekhere 2018 32

Most importantly have a lot of fun on your Trek America trip – I’m sure it will be a blast as you explore many of the places they go to around North America and beyond.

If you have any questions about which trip to take, feel free to send me an email or a tweet and I will be happy to help. Happy travels!

Tour operator, trek america (operations suspended).

Born in 1972, TrekAmerica was the brain-child of Jeremy James; and was started out based on the idea of cross-country American road trips with friends. The very first treks were 21 days, starting in New York and ending in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, the very same route that is still our most popular trip today - the Southern Sun!

The concept was simple, get together a group of free-wheeling, independent types, pack up a van with tents, camping gear, and a trek leader and follow the road, hitting all the key places along the way. Labelled 'Tours for Non-Tourists' trips were aimed at 18-35's and offered a fun, flexible and cheap way to travel

Fast forward 40 years and whilst a few things have changed along the way our spirit remains the same, we love bringing together small groups of young, international travellers to experience the best of USA, Canada, Alaska and Central America. Taking in the incredible national parks, small towns, amazing cities and fantastic activities, TrekAmerica gives you the ultimate American adventure.

Reading Terminal Market is waiting for you to explore and you're in the right place if you're feeling a little peckish; grab yourself a Philly cheesesteak from one of the many famous local joints. Culture vultures rejoice, as next up is Washington DC where you'll enjoy soaking up all the history of the nation's capital. From honky-tonk bars to the Grand Ole Opry, they don't call Nashville 'Music City' for nothing! This place is full of life and you'll be hotfooting your way from one country bar to the next. Find out all about the history of music at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, home to the largest collection of country music memorabilia in the world. Even if country isn't your thing, there are live bands everywhere, so you're sure to be toe-tapping by the end of the day.

Turn up that radio, you're about to hit Memphis, the birthplace of rock 'n' roll! With that in mind why not visit the home of Elvis in Graceland, or head to Sun Studio, where many of the greats cut their early records, from BB King to Elvis and Johnny Cash. Stroll along Beale Street where the electric atmosphere will keep you entertained for hours as you listen out for some of the best blues music in town. There's more to Memphis than just music, so pay a visit to the National Civil Rights Museum, located in the former Lorraine Hotel, and see the place where Martin Luther King was assassinated.

Here in the 'Big Easy', sultry bass and chirpy rhythms are king. New Orleans is definitely a city every music fan must make a pilgrimage to at least once in their lifetime! Head into the enchanting French Quarter and hear the real deal at Preservation Hall, before tucking into some classic and delicious Southern cuisine. If you don't want to stop at just eating the likes of gumbo and jambalaya, why not take part in an optional New Orleans cookery class so you can really impress the folks back home. Make a beeline for the legendary nightlife of Bourbon Street, where almost anything goes. New Orleans is a place full of life and is an experience you won't forget in a hurry!

  • New Orleans

Search for gators and other wildlife on our optional Louisiana swamp tour, where you'll slowly drift past ancient Indian burial mounds and fishing villages while taking in the unique scenery of the mysterious bayous of Cajun country (it’s a must do!). Then the ‘Lone Star State’ bids you a big-hearted welcome for the first of your nights in mighty Texas, a state which is larger than some countries!

You’d better not have had your fill of music, as the tunes keep on flowing in Austin, claiming the title for ‘live music capital of the world’. Austin is an electric, cultural and artistic city that packs a punch. Live music can be heard almost any night of the week, so get an enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. During the day check out Barton Springs or hit up one of the city’s local food trucks for some tasty cuisine.

Next up is a state which is larger than some countries, Texas! Follow part of the original Route 66 and pay a visit to Cadillac Ranch for unique desert art and one of the most talked about roadside attractions in the US before setting up camp in the night in funky Amarillo, situated in the Texas Panhandle.

Follow part of Route 66 and pay a visit to Cadillac Ranch for a quirky take on desert art and one of the most talked about roadside attractions in the US. For all the art lovers out there, Santa Fe is for you. Visit Canyon Road, home to art galleries, cultural treasures such as hand-woven Navajo rugs, historic adobe buildings and a vibrant restaurant scene. Our top tip here is to visit the brilliantly weird Meow Wolf, an immersive art experience like no other.

Monument Valley, made famous in Westerns and Hollywood films such as Forrest Gump, is unsurprisingly one of the most recognisable landscapes in America. Immerse yourself in the native Navajo culture on an optional (and highly recommended) guided jeep tour of the Navajo Reservation. Experience the real 'Wild West' as you marvel at towering buttes and mesas which dominate the awe-inspiring landscape. After a day of exploring this American wonderland, gather around the campfire and swap stories under a blanket of stars, perfection!

  • Monument Valley

Your next road trip highlight is the epic Grand Canyon. As soon as you reach the rim and gaze across the vast canyon you'll be lost for words, this place is so awesome! Pack your boots and don't forget your camera for a sunrise or sunset walk along the rim for that extra wow factor! For the more ambitious, take the long hike down Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point or take to the sky and see the Grand Canyon in all its glory on an optional helicopter flight. Magnificent from any angle, but one thing's for sure you'll never forget your first glimpse of the Grand Canyon.

  • Grand Canyon National Park

It's on to picture-perfect Zion National Park where you can get stunning 360 degree views of the entire national park if you take on a challenging hike to the viewpoint at Angels Landing.  Whether you're up top or down below, Zion National Park will blow your mind as you're surrounded by brilliant red rock and bright blue skies; you're guaranteed one heck of a great time here.

  • Zion National Park

Next up, it’s the one and only Vegas. Time to put those lucky numbers to the test, not to mention your energy levels, in this 24/7 party town. Feel like a celeb for the evening with a cruise along The Strip in a party bus. All-you-can-eat buffets are famous here, so it would be rude not to tuck into lots of tasty food on the cheap; just make sure you don't ride the roller coasters straight after! Vegas isn't all about gambling and clubs, so why not check out a show, take an evening flight down The Strip or get yourself hitched by Elvis Presley (don't worry, it's not legally binding... unless you want it to be!).

Say goodbye to the bright lights of Las Vegas and hello to the beautiful Californian sunshine with your final stop in glitzy Los Angeles. Check out Venice and head for a sweet lookout spot to see hippest part of the city. Don't worry though, you'll have 21 days of awesome memories to take home with you! If you're spending a few extra days, why not check out Hollywood Boulevard and hang out with the cool kids of LA, or stop by Santa Monica Pier and have your fortune told. This tour ends at approximately 17:00 hrs. We can book you post tour accommodation at our gateway hotel if required. If you are planning to fly tonight, please do not book a flight that departs before 21:00 hrs.

more information about usa hiking vacations

What is a hiking vacation.

A hiking vacation or multi-day hiking tour can naturally take many different forms, but for most travelers it’s a trip to a new or return destination to hike, explore, learn and discover. Some of the most popular destinations in the U.S.A. for a hiking vacation are:

  • Desert Southwest: Grand Canyon, Southern Utah, Sedona, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Capitol Reef, Paria Canyon, and more
  • Sierra Nevadas Mountains: Yosemite, Eastern Sierras, Sequoia-Kings Canyon and more
  • Pacific Northwest: Mountain Rainier, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park and more
  • Rocky Mountains: Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and more
  • Appalachia: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains and more

camp or accommodations?

Many travelers choose to camp on hiking vacations in the U.S., but staying in accommodations can also be a great option, without necessarily detracting from the level of adventure of a multi-day hiking tour. Accommodations in the U.S. normally are hotels and lodges, with an outside of chance of finding yurt accommodations (semi-permanent, framed, soft-sided structures).

BACKPACKING OR TREKKING?

  • Learn from local experts – Wildland Trekking guides are very knowledgeable about the areas where we work. NATIONAL PARKS, STATE PARKS, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE AND BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT

Generally speaking, your vaction will most likely be to one or more national parks , state parks , United States Forest Service (USFS) lands, or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Most visitors will head to national parks, but the other areas should not be overlooked. Some of the most amazing hiking vacations in the USA are on USFS and BLM lands. A basic breakdown of each, and their differences, is provided here:

  • National Parks: these are the big name destinations like Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains…etc. They are highly regulated, amazingly well maintained wild refuges throughout the United States. Any overnight camping and backpacking will require permits; dogs are not allowed; and advanced planning is highly recommended.
  • State Parks: these lands are often much smaller than the national parks (like less than 1% the size on average), but there are some wonderful state parks that offer fantastic trekking experiences. For example, the Northern California coast is mostly comprised of state parks that offer stunning views and excellent coastal hiking.
  • USFS Lands: the Western USA is made up of millions of square miles of USFS lands, and they are some of the most breathtaking and expansive wilderness left in the USA and the world. These areas often do not require permits and are more lightly regulated than the national parks. Dogs are allowed on most USFS lands.
  • BLM: these lands are sometimes amazing, sometimes not, sometimes pristine, sometimes riddled with roads, mines and/or other extractive industry activity like drilling. These lands are the least regulated and least visited, which means they can be home to some surprisingly amazing secret gem areas. Dogs are allowed.

walking in the desert

Many trekking vacations in the USA will be in the Southwestern part of the country, where desert ecosystems prevail. This region is home to the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Great Basin deserts. Characterized by low levels of precipitation, hot summer temperatures and mild winter temperatures, deserts can make for wonderful winter hiking vacations. They can also be great in the spring and fall. It’s recommended to avoid deserts in the summer months unless you’re well prepared for the high temperatures and dry conditions. Also, any time you’re walking in the desert (but especially if it’s in the summer), it’s imperative to be aware of common medical conditions such as heat stroke and hyponatremia , and how to avoid them.

walking in the mountains

The USA is home to a staggering number of different mountain ranges, from the Rocky Mountains to the Sierras, Appalachians, Cascades, Allegheny’s, Smokies, Asheville Area , White Mountains…etc. And within one major range, like the Rocky Muntains, there are subranges like the San Juans, Sangre de Christos, Missions, Crazies, Flat Tops , Wind Rivers…etc. And many of America’s most famous national parks are in the mountains, like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains and many others.

Generally speaking, walking in the mountains is best in the late spring, summer and fall months. Often the early spring is still quite snowy in the mountains, and snow begins to fall again usually in mid to late fall. The summer months are prime time for most mountain visits. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms and not getting caught out in the open (such as above treeline) if thunderstorms roll in. And be prepared for sudden and extreme weather shifts – a day in the mountains can begin warm and clear and within a couple hours be dark, cold, windy and rainy.

walking on the coasts

Of course the coasts, both west and east, offer incredible trekking opportunities. With national parks like Olympic National Park and Acadia National Park in the east, hugging the coasts, there are fantastic on-foot adventures to be had. When hiking on the coasts, be aware of tides and slippery, treacherous sections of walking. Being caught in a tidal zone when the tide roles back in can be a mistake you’ll never have a chance of repeating, so plan ahead, talk to experts, or join guided hikes with expert trip leaders.

Madonna

Madonna played the final shows of The Celebration Tour, closing her six-month trek with $225.4 million and 1.1 million tickets sold over 80 shows, according to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore .

The Celebration Tour is Madonna’s sixth trek to gross more than $100 million. The only other acts to achieve this are the Eagles , The Rolling Stones , Bruce Springsteen and U2 , making her the sole woman in this elite group.

Madonna Wraps Celebration Tour With Record-Setting Free Concert in Rio de Janeiro

Trending on billboard.

By year’s end, Madonna played three shows in Brooklyn and two in Washington, D.C., before resuming the North American leg with 42 more shows from January through April. In the U.S. and Canada, she earned $133.1 million and sold 616,000 tickets, sending the tour’s total figures beyond $200 million and 1 million tickets.

Finally, Madonna went to Latin America for the first time since 2016, as part of the Rebel Heart Tour. Five shows at Mexico City’s Palacio de los Deportes grossed $14.8 million and sold 82,400 tickets.

In all, The Celebration Tour’s $225 million finish marks Madonna’s highest-grossing tour in over a decade. While in Europe, it surpassed her theater experiment on the Madame X Tour ($51.5 million in 2019-20). And during her North American leg, she partied past the Rebel Heart Tour’s $169.8 million from 2015-16.

Madonna’s recent high dates back to 2012’s MDNA Tour, which grossed $305.2 million and sold 2.2 million tickets. That trek played many of the same American arenas as The Celebration Tour, but took her to Europe’s outsized outdoor stadiums, plus a lengthier stadium run throughout Latin America. Her biggest tour ever was the one before that, earning $407.7 million from 3.5 million tickets on the Sticky & Sweet Tour (2008-09).

That average attendance is missing an obvious asterisk. After playing her final show in Mexico City, Madonna staged a free concert at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, marking her first stop in the city since a Dec. 2, 2012, performance on the MDNA Tour. The show’s gargantuan success does not factor into her official Boxscore results because it was a free event, but it’s plenty worth noting that she drew 1.6 million people – roughly 40% more than the combined attendance of her entire tour. According to concert promoter Live Nation, it’s the largest audience ever for a stand-alone concert by any artist in history.

The Celebration Tour pushes Madonna’s reported career total to $1.6 billion and – without accounting for the Brazil show – 12.8 million tickets.
