Bookings made simple

Used Trip to book a car, hotel and a resort for our last trip to Fiji and NZ. Other than a couple of glamour shots that made the hotel look a bit better than it actually was, the experience and costs were as expected. Some clearer language re the local charges would have been helpful but I'm used to seeing them from other sites as well

Bookings with Trip.com are very easy

Bookings with Trip.com are very easy. I booked both fight and hotel accommodation here. When there is flight re-scheduled, I also received an updated information through email. However, some hotels can be booked now and pay later at the hotel, even with free cancellation policy. All accommodation has to be paid in advance.

Eastin Hotel should improve their breakfast menu and choices. It's a prime location where people frequently stay, including myself, as I have stayed there many times. I will definitely repeat my stay in the future because it's a very convenient place for me. However, whether I will repeat my breakfast there is uncertain. I have decided to book only the rooms and not the breakfast moving forward.

Average experience, good for discounts

I used trip.com to book a train ticket and get a railcard just because of the discount they had. I think their user interface is too busy, and it complicates things for no reason. Also my first payment with google wallet didn't go through well so my booking was cancelled after an hour (I did re-book and got refunded for the cancellation, but I'm saying it was weird it happened).

Basic Min Su Experience

Breakfast provided was basic but good enough for us. Ball pit and carousel kept the kids entertained. Swimming pool wasn’t available due to maintenance. Sanitary fittings needs maintenance as well (toilet bowl was choked), good to provide more hooks/towel bars. Family with young kids to watch the kids closely as the stairs wall are pretty low - fall precaution needed. Take note there’s no lifts as well. Prompt replies from the staffs via WhatsApp for pick up request.

There is one big week point that the entrance is too dirty and smelly. They don't have a private entrance, they share a public entrance and a public elevator which is too much dirty, smelly, and requires repair. However once you enter the hotel lobby at 3rd floor of the building, everything changes. Now the hotel lobby and rooms and corridor everything looks greatly perfect. While hotel is newly renovated. Near and clean. Staff's attitude is extra ordinary polite and helping. They gave me water bottles as many times as I wanted. I stayed in a room with Window, I do not know how can people stay in a room without window. Location is great. I'll stay here again and will ask the owner to spend atleast some little amount on renovating the elevator and entrance also.

We got redirected to Trip.com through Skyscanner for our flights to and in Europe, for just the payment and booking portion of our search. First, upon payment, trip.com needs you to reverify the same email information we have verified with Skyscanner, then they will have to let us know by email if our booking is confirmed (really?). Then they will trickle release our e-tickets, one leg within 48 hours, and another within 96 hours (we are still hoping). Plus you run the gauntlet of upgrade (choose seats for each leg for $, choose baggage for $ - when we booked with baggage, choose flexibility for $, choose food in advance for $, and even choose online checkin for $). I wish we'd jumped off Skyscanner after we'd had it optimise the multiple-airline, multiple stop flights, and then booked through the relevant airlines directly. Did trip.com get us the tickets we purchased? Probably, time will tell. But was it highly annoying? Yes. Annoying enough to make us bail next time.

Dear Mapoz, Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. Kindly know that we will double-check the situation and contact you directly. We value your feedback and are committed to providing a satisfactory experience. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your feedback. Best regards, Natalie Trip.com

Trip.com is a truly reliable online travel company with excellent customer services. My booked flight was rescheduled by airlines and Trip.com's Customer Advisor Ms Ruth Thevi call and explain about the change to me, but I was unable to decide on the spot due to the flight change affected my whole schedule. I told her I need time and asked her to call back. She did it and call back on our agree time and very patience to talk with me for following up and explain to me about the alternative.

Excellent Customer Services and Follow Up By Ruth Thevi

Trip.com is a truly reliable online travel company with excellent customer services. My booked flight was rescheduled by airlines and Trip.com's Customer Advisor Ms Ruth Thevi call and explain about the change to me, but I was unable to decide on the spot due to the flight change affected my whole schedule. What reviewers want you to know

Positive highlights.

  • I was able to contact customer service within 30 seconds from their chat system linked easily in my confirmation email.

Critical highlights

  • They only refund me for the cancelled flight but not return flight .
  • They refused to refund us our money and we lost both our flight tickets which was 1700 dollars.

“GREAT”

Booked hotels, no issues at all! Don't understand the negatives! I needed to ask a question, got a real person (no bot)

“SCAM SCAM SCAM”

When I paid for tickets on the website, an error occurred that the payment did not go through. I closed the site and moved on. Later I found out that the full amount was withdrawn from my bank account. When I contacted them, they promised to solve it in 24 hours, but for 17 days no one has contacted me or even complained. I do not recommend this site to anyone.

Do not use this company to book your holiday/trip with this joke of a company!!

Do not use this company to book your trips! We booked a hotel highlighted by Trip.com and it was a building site! Drilling in adjoining rooms, cement dust all over the floors, masonry on the ground and more! The hotel tried to move us to equally as awful rooms and floors which we refused and left for another hotel. We had not stayed overnight, we checked in which is how we discovered all the issues and the hotel refused to repay our booking costs in full retaining one night. I complained to Trip with all the details and they refused to support our claim instead offering various amounts of ridiculous amounts of ‘Trip Coins’. Do not use this company and avoid when Agoda.com and booking.com provide better service, transparency and quality hotels.

I pre-paid for my room when I had to be in the area for a family funeral. The room at Tropicana was a good deal on the web-site at $43. For some reason I was charged an additional $40 for "resort fees" at the property. Please disclose charges so customers can make an informed decision.

Really bad experience

Really bad experience. The airline boarding for Flair apparently begins an hour earlier and trip.com did not notify me of this and I got to the airport an hour before take-off and the gate was closed. I had already checked in the night before but that doesn’t matter (I was not told this). I called trip.com for assistance and the manager was dismissive and basically said I should show up 2 hours early for all domestic flights and she wouldn’t provide any refund, any compensation or help me book a new flight. So I’m sitting in the airport having paid for that flight that is still here but I’m not allowed on it and trying to buy a whole other flight .. through a better service this time.

Searching and displaying information problems

Explicit displays any discounts or coins used, payment terms and details on hote and room information, including reviews on room type, staying period and negative comments on website. But the searching hotels by filtering arrangement is not good and confused, especially by district areas and price ordering. The searching system for long stay hotel is not good, always returning to first page after clicking out from selected hotels...wasting time in searching again from the starting page so I gave up that searching

Date of experience : 16 May 2024

Dear C.L. Li, Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts about our system. I am sorry to hear that you were not satisfied with how our filter arrangement works. Please know that we always want to make sure that our customers will enjoy their hotel stay that was booked with us aside from the convenience that we want to provide. We want to know more about it for improvement. We will contact you directly for updates. Again, we apologize and thank you for your understanding and patience. Best regards, Jess Trip.com

Never book through trip.com!!

Never book through trip.com!!! They don't issue tickets immediately and give a timeline of 48 hours for issuing tickets , keeping you at a risk of increasing prices. For my upcoming travel even after following up my tickets were still not issued so i ended up booking with the airline directly as prices were increasing. When I proceeded with cancellation they immediately issued the ticket and started asking for cancellation charges for cancelling. They are fraud Chinese travel company!

Didn't pay the correct cashback

I had bought an airline ticket through a link on Topcashback on Trip.com. This was the first time I chose Trip.com as they seemed to have a good cashback offer on Topcashback. However, Trip.com didn't fulfil their end of the agreement. Based on the calculation, they should have paid back £14.05 but they actually only gave back £3.89. When I raised a claim, they just replied saying 'the correct amount has been paid' without any showing any calculation or further explanation. I certainly won't be using them again. Very disappointing for a company that seems to have a good record on trustpilot. Edit: Let me be clear, Topcashback was only the mediator. The cashback was promised by Trip.com and then not fulfilled.

Dear Tenpin, Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. We understand your frustration regarding the cashback issue with Topcashback. However, please note that as a travel agency, we have no control over third-party cashback services. We recommend reaching out to Topcashback directly to address this claim. We apologize once again for any inconvenience caused and wish you all the best. Best regards, Skylar Trip.com

All info is confusing

For the two tickets I purchased for the Coliseum in Rome, the information I received via email and on the app make no sense at all. There is something about an “electronic admission voucher provided by the supplier” I’m supposed to get which tells me nothing. Do I have to track this “voucher” down myself or will someone send it by email, regular mail, Pony Express???? I thought I went through the proper purchasing process and should have something that verifies my right to admission either on the app or on an email but all I get is some cryptic message.

Dear Brian/Nodine, Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. Kindly know that we will double-check the situation and contact you directly. We value your feedback and are committed to providing a satisfactory experience. Once again, we apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your feedback. Best regards, Riley Trip.com

Trip is not there for you for urgent issues

When you need urgent assistance, you're repeatedly asked to wait for an x amount of hours for a response. Trip takes too long to investigate an issue with a third party hotel forcing you to stay until they're investigation is complete.

Very poor accommodation-old room-only…

Very poor accommodation-old room-only one bulb in the room-only one bulb in bathroom-shabby bedspread-they provided a bucket in the bathroom but not provided mug- first day there is no drinking water in the lobby-second day they provided drinking water but there is a fly in the drinking water. So not usable- they promised hot water from 7 am to 10 am but hot water stopped by 9 am. Water quality is extremely bad- orange colour water is provided-no kettles and tea bags in the room

Do not book a flight with Trip.com

Booked a flight to travel to Munich for a couple of days in December, the flight was cancelled due to extreme weather closing the airport. I have been trying ever since to get my money back from Trip and they are telling me I am not entitled to a refund as the airline ticket was a non refundable one. The cancellation was not my fault and the airport remained closed. Lufthansa refused a refund as the ticket was bought via a third party (Trip). Honestly so frustrated and hundreds out of pocket. Lesson learnt book your airline tickets direct with airlines as Lufthansa would’ve have refunded me if booked direct through them. Trip have been shocking in their customer service never again.

The hotel is a wedding venue and takes coach parties which seems to take priority over the comfort of ordinary guests because of insufficient facilities to service the numbers concerned.

A large wedding had taken over all of the facilities when we arrived at about 3pm. eg the bar, outdoor sitting areas, leaving nowhere for guests arriving in the afternoon to sit and relax. In the meantime a coach party from Wales checked-in which made the situation worse. The restaurant was not available for guests for over an hour due to the coach party . When we eventually dined, the food was pretty good. The next day we were out all day . When we returned we were informed that the restaurant was fully booked unless we wanted to dine at 8-45pm - which we did not. We left and found an alternative venue which meant I had to drive, which was not part of our plan.

Dear Alex Sutherland, Thanks a lot for your feedback. We apologize sincerely for any inconvenience caused. We will conduct further checking and contact you directly. Your feedback is highly valued, and we are treating it with utmost seriousness. We appreciate your patience and understanding in this concern. Best regards, Emilia Trip.com

Trip.com is an absolute scam

Trip.com is an absolute scam. I had a flight on Westjet booked through trip.com and due to wildfire evacuations could not do my planned trip. Westjet said they would absolutely allow the refund but it had to be done through the booking party while flight.com refused. Trust me, spend the extra money and book through the real airlines! This company is a joke.

Dear Stephanie, Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may have encountered. Please be assured that we will investigate the matter and reach out to you. We value your feedback and appreciate your patience. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Article's hero media

We wanted to reduce the hassle and help travelers enjoy their hard-earned vacations. So today, we’re introducing a new mobile app to help you instantly plan each day of your trip with just a few taps of your finger:  Google Trips .

Introducing Google Trips

Google Trips is a personalized tour guide in your pocket. Each trip contains key categories of information, including day plans, reservations, things to do, food & drink, and more, so you have everything you need at your fingertips. The entire app is available offline — simply tap the “Download” button under each trip to save it to your phone.

trips1.png

Choose your own adventure

For the top 200 cities in the world, Google Trips shows you a variety of day plans featuring the most popular daily itineraries. We’ve automatically assembled the most popular sights, attractions, and local gems into a full day’s tour — all based on historic visits by other travelers. Say you’re visiting Barcelona. You can choose from multiple day plans, like “Eixample District,” which maps out the can’t-miss buildings by Antoni Gaudi, the famous Spanish architect.

trips2.png

Plan each day of your trip like magic

Say your friends told you that you have to see the Sagrada Familia — and you’re looking for suggestions on things to do around that spot. Press the “+” button in the day plans tile to jump into a map view containing all the top attractions in your destination. If you’re time constrained, you can specify above the map whether you have just the morning or afternoon, versus a full day. Then simply tap and pin the Sagrada Familia to build your itinerary around it. Google Trips automatically fills in the day for you. If you want more options, tap the “magic wand” button for more nearby sights. You can pin any new spots you like, and if you want even more, each tap of the “magic wand” instantly gives you a new itinerary with updated nearby attractions like Palau Macaya or Parc del Guinardo, so you can build your own custom itinerary in minutes while munching on your morning churro.

trips3.png

All your travel info, all in one place

Keeping track of all your flight, hotel, car and restaurant reservations when you travel can be tough. With Google Trips, all your travel reservations are automatically gathered from Gmail and organized for you into individual trips, so you don’t have to search and dig up those emails. They’re waiting for you within the reservations tile, even without WiFi.

trips4.png

Vacations are a chance to recharge and experience new places and cultures. For your next trip, let us help you see all the sights you want to see, without all the work. Google Trips, available now on  Android  and  iOS , has you covered from departure to return.

If you're scavenging the internet in a travel planning frenzy, you probably feel overwhelmed by what's being offered. There are so many ads, so many websites, and so many options!

Where is one of the only places I browse? Trip.com. This good oldie can help you piece together an epic holiday—it sure has in the past for me.

Top-notch destinations, tedious transportation, and many accommodations are just a few things you must choose between when planning a trip. Sorting through all those travel-related details can feel exhausting, and it can take a lot of work to get everything right.

That's where platforms like Trip.com come in. Coined as a convenient, all-in-one travel platform, you expect to have an easy time planning.

But how can you be sure you're getting the best deals? And do you know if it's even reliable? Is it better than travel deal sites like Priceline , Fareportal , and Momondo ?

Whether you're hunting down a budget-friendly vacation or a month-long backpacking trip, let's find out whether Trip.com should be the go-to platform that'll help you figure out all your trip plans...

Trip.com Logo

What Is Trip.com?

Trip.com offers many travel-related booking services like flights, accommodation, and transport options. It also covers all-in-one packages and deals on attractions and activities for a convenient experience.

With everything all in one place, the platform makes things easy by narrowing down your search time.

Operating all over the globe, including over 200 countries and regions, you can find something tailored to your travel style in the destination you're looking for.

Trip.com boasts 24/7 support, advice, and assistance for any travel-related concerns.

And with a relatively easy-to-use setup, this travel platform is a popular option among the competition. What sets Trip.com apart? Many people say it's the deals and promotions, especially on hotels and flights.

How Did Trip.com Start?

Gone are the days of flipping through the pages of travel books, calling flight companies, and scavenging your purse for your tickets.

Nowadays, platforms like Trip.com make travel planning hassle-free. But who even started it?

Trip.com sprung out from Ctrip Group's urge to provide the global travel community with solutions. Founded in 1999 in Shanghai, China, it's since become a leading travel booking website.

This convenient platform allows customers to enjoy booking and planning services in one spot.

Does Trip.Com Have a Mobile App?

Yes, Trip.com has a very easy-to-use mobile app. I was using Trip.com when it was still Ctrip, and even back then, the app was super helpful.

I'm someone who doesn't like to do a lot of important tasks on their mobile—I like to feel and look at having all the info on a large desktop screen. That being said, I've booked through the Trip.com app and haven't had any issues.

Why Is Trip.com So Cheap?

Now that you've scanned this popular travel platform, you're probably wondering why the prices are so affordable. Compared to other travel booking websites, the prices don't make sense.

So, why won't Trip.com put a dent in your wallet? Let's find out:

  • Trip.com is part of a massive online travel agency, Ctrip Group, which allows them to score much lower prices. This means it can get customers better discounts on airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc.
  • The competitive prices can change in real time, according to supply and demand. Known as dynamic pricing, Trip.com offers travel services that adapt to the current market.
  • Thanks to its 20 years in business, Trip.com has managed to form partnerships with airlines, hotels, and other services. This platform can offer exclusive discounts and special deals to its customers. The deals are something that makes it stand out to budget travelers and backpackers.

Is Trip.com Reliable?

So now you know how it works, but is Trip.com legit? Having been in the travel industry for over 2 decades, this travel platform has built up a decent reputation.

With 24/7 customer support, people tend to rave about the convenience of having a solution just a phone call away.

Plus, as it's part of the Ctrip Group, Trip.com is included as one of the biggest online travel agencies. This association ups its credibility and reliability, resulting in higher reviews as a secure booking platform.

Whether it's your first time traveling or you're a newcomer to budget trips, you can get peace of mind knowing that you haven't been ripped off.

Trip.com even uses encryption technology to keep people's information safe and protected. Thanks to these modern services, you don't have to worry about your sensitive information or payment details being leaked.

Cancellation Policy of Trip.com

Trip.com's cancellation policy can vary greatly depending on what you're looking for. There are some flight deals or hotel bookings that you can get free cancellation policy with. That being said, it varies greatly.

I've broken it down into the 3 main booking types and what you can expect if you need to cancel your plans.

  • Flights : When it comes down to flights, some airlines may charge a cancellation fee. In fact, some airlines may even charge up to 100% of the ticket price. So, make sure you review the fine print before booking!
  • Hotels : Depending on the hotel, the cancellation policy can vary significantly. Like flights, some hotels can even take up to 100% of the total price, so don't book without reading the details.
  • Rental cars : In most cases, there's no extra fee for cancellation. The only catch is the time period. Be sure to check out the specific cancellation details for each provider.

The Good and the Bad of Trip.com

  • Comprehensive Services: Trip.com is one of the most comprehensive travel booking sites. From flight tickets and hotel stays to vacation packages and car rentals, you can seamlessly book various travel services. Plus, it often offers a better price compared to similar competitors.
  • User-Friendly Interface: The platform's intuitive design ensures even the most tech-averse users can easily navigate the site, making the booking process simple and straightforward.
  • Round-the-Clock Support: Travel mishaps don't stick to a 9-5 schedule, nor does Trip.com. Its 24/7 customer support means you're never alone, even during those unexpected mid-journey hiccups.
  • Limited Personalization: While Trip.com provides a broad array of options, the depth of personalization sometimes leaves something to be desired. Depending on your travel dates and preferences, you might not always find the travel experience you're hoping for.
  • Availability Issues: Because of how popular the booking system Trip.com is, there are instances when desired accommodations or flights might be booked out.
  • Hidden Costs: The allure of a great deal can sometimes be overshadowed by additional fees. Charges for baggage, service, or other add-ons may not be immediately visible during the booking process, which can result in unexpected costs down the line.

Trip.com Rewards Program

You heard that right... Trip.com has a rewards program. This loyalty program is similar to Expedia's rewards, another considerable competitor in the market.

Calling all new users to Trip.com! If you're looking for more ways to save money while using Trip.com, signing up for the free rewards program is the way. And, depending on how much you book through Trip.com, you can benefit more!

The rewards program has 4 tiers: Silver, gold, platinum, and diamond members. You'll get access to more benefits as you move up in the tiers. And once you sign up, no matter your tier, you'll start earning "Trip Coins" that you can spend like money.

I've attached a screenshot from Trip.com's website that'll give you a better idea of the perks of each tier...

What Are Others Saying?

There are a lot of mixed reviews online. Some are overwhelmingly positive, while some customer reviews are so angry they want to give a 0-star rating. Let's break down the main points people are talking about online.

Many of the people who've left positive feedback talk about receiving acceptable resolutions to problems after speaking with Trip.com's customer service. Other customers say the website is easy to navigate, making the overall experience less stressful!

In contrast, the customers who wrote 1-star reviews contradict the positive reviews about terrible customer service experiences. Others complain about an inconvenience they experienced while on vacation where Trip.com did not help them with a good resolution.

My Personal Experience

I'm giving Trip.com a pretty decent rating—see below. But why? Well, I used it very often while living in China and traveling around Asia. I had minimal issues with it.

As I mentioned above, I really enjoyed my experience using the phone app. It made mobile bookings easy, and I found all my tickets without hassle.

I've booked several types of reservations with Trip.com, including cheap flights between Asian countries, train tickets between mainland Chinese cities, and discount hotels in a couple of Asian cities.

I did run into some hiccups with my bookings but I had an okay time with customer service. Yes, sometimes it was frustrating because the worker's English wasn't stellar, but they got me what I needed. Whether it was a refund or changing my flight tickets for a fee, I could do it by calling its 24/7 customer support line!

That said, I don't use it as often when traveling around North America or Europe!

Is Trip.com Worth It?

I think Trip.com's offerings are valuable enough for most travelers, whether for budget travel or a business trip, that you should browse the site whenever you're trying to plan your upcoming trip.

If you're seeking the convenience of having everything in one travel-related platform, then Trip.com is an excellent option. You can easily compare prices and then book flights, accommodation, tours, and transport in one spot.

Whether you're trying to compare pricing and options ahead of time or you're booking a last-minute trip, Trip.com is definitely one of the online travel agencies that you should look into.

Since Trip.com provides discounted prices on travel services, it's a fantastic option for budget travelers and backpackers. Even if you don't end up booking through Trip.com, you can feel good about your purchase knowing you've checked a variety of reliable travel booking sites.

On the other hand, who should skip out on using Trip.com? If you're looking for a personalized trip with specific details, you might not find what you're looking for.

My only words of caution are to make sure that you start searching early to avoid availability issues and check the details for any additional fees!

My Rating: 3.9/5

  • Budget-friendly, competitive prices
  • Easy-to-use
  • Wide variety of services
  • 24/7 customer support
  • Encryption technology
  • Restricted personalization
  • Varied customer support quality
  • Limited availability on dates, deals, tours, etc.
  • Extra costs and fees

Frequently asked questions

How important is Tripadvisor compared with Google? What should you steer your customers towards?

The power of Tripadvisor is rapidly diminishing. Google, on the other hand, is stronger than ever , consistently being used by travellers in NZ and Australia as THE place to share online reviews. In fact, 70% of people , when given a choice, decide to share reviews on Google, 15% on TripAdvisor and 15% on Facebook Recommendations *. ‍

Tripadvisor is still a powerful platform that can help you get bookings, but Google reviews is taking the crown as the most influential decision-making tool for most customers.

‍ Getting 5-star Google reviews from customers is also helping businesses boost their search presence. The more 5-star reviews you have, the higher relevance Google will give your web page in search results.

Google says: ‍

“Our algorithms might decide that a business that’s farther away from your location is more likely to have what you’re looking for than a business that’s closer and therefore rank it higher in local results.”

→ A quick look at movements Google has made in tourism in the last few years:

The Google Travels website was launched in 2019, pulling together flights, hotels and vacation packages, as well as a variety of trip-planning tools and recommendations , all on one page. The features are also available in Google Search and Google Maps, making Google Maps more of a super-app for travel, dining, events, spa appointments, and more. On top of that, Google can often proactively ask people for a review when it has seen your phone has visited a certain business. ‍

When your customers search for “things to do”, Google provides everything they need to know , from pricing to FAQ’s to reviews, right at their fingertips .

Are you doing everything you can to build the best Google profile?

It’s important to make sure that your Google My Business details and business hours are always up to date and correct . Set up FAQs and share a link to your Google reviews page with your customers to make it easy for them to review — Yonder can help any business automate this .

‍ Yonder can also help you save time when it comes to monitoring and responding to your online reviews , which is something Google highly recommends doing: “When you reply to reviews, it shows that you value your customers and their feedback . High-quality, positive reviews from your customers can improve your business visibility and increase the likelihood that a shopper will visit your location.”

*This split is measured when given only three options of Google, Tripadvisor and Facebook reviews.

Google trips: a fantastic (and free) travel app you should download now.

Screenshots courtesy of Google.

I don't typically like travel apps, but Google Trips is pretty fantastic. It’s a free app that compiles all your personal travel info (tickets, reservations, etc) and combines that with top spots to see where you’re going.

Just that would be cool, but using the power of big data, Trips goes a step further and helps you plan your adventure based on what you’re interested in and how much time you have.

It’s all wrapped in an easy-to-navigate interface and even better, all the info is available when you’re offline (presuming you downloaded stuff ahead of time). Since it’s free you should check it out now . But if you’re still not convinced, here’s a closer look.

Planning a big trip? Check out  10 Things To Bring On Every International Flight (And 3 Things Not To) ,  Is Verizon’s TravelPass Worth It? ,  Should You Pay in Local Or Home Currency When Traveling? ,  Are Travel SIM Cards Worth It? ,  Is Travel Insurance Worth It? , and  The Best Cellular Plan for Travelers .

Reservations

The part of Trips I find most handy is actually the simplest part of what the app does. It puts all your reservations in one place: Airline tickets, hotel/hostel reservations, etc. Click on an upcoming flight, say, and it gives you the times plus the terminal and gate (if available). The confirmation number is there too, as is a link to the email where Google found the info.

For hotels and hostels, it shows a map too.

That's just the easy part...

Getting Around

The second most handy is the Getting Around section. Arrive in a new place, and there’s always the moment of confusion of how to get from there to the center of town (and/or from there to your accommodation). This section gives you detailed info on how to get from the airport to the city either by public transport, taxi, rental car, and so on. The taxi section even gives estimated fares.

This extends to getting around the city itself. For example, I’m currently in Tokyo, and it talks about the Suica and Pasmo cards, JR Rail Pass, and tips for navigating the elaborate subway system .

Things to Do

By compiling user data and reviews, the Things to Do section has lists of the top things to see in the city, the top things to see near you, and even personalized recommendations. I was skeptical of how accurate the latter could be, but it recommended the Ghibli museum and a few other things that I did find interesting.

Food and Drink

I’ve found crowd-based restaurant recommendations to be pretty inaccurate. Some are indeed good, some are really mediocre. To each their own, it seems. But that’s here too if you want to try.

This is probably the cleverest of the features. Trips builds an itinerary based on the top things to do, and how much time you have.

For example, it gave me a “48 hours in Tokyo” to-do list that included things like the Imperial Palace, the lovely  Shinjuku Gyoen , and more, and in what order to see them to optimize your time. If you’re interested in some of the sights Trips recommends, but not others, you can save the ones you do and add new ones. The itinerary adjusts accordingly. The whole thing is based on some really fascinating math .

There are also pre-built itineraries for things to do with kids, or just see the old part of town, or just see cool architecture, that kind of thing.

The best part about these is if you download the city ahead of time (and there’s multiple places to give you the option to do so) the itinerary, things to do, AND the map of the city are available in airplane mode (so you don’t need to find WiFi or incur roaming charges).

A Few Little Things

Trips isn’t perfect, of course. Not every city is included, though Google claims the “top 200 cities” are, so you should be covered. It’s a little cumbersome to change the itinerary (you need to press the pencil icon at the top to start), but it makes sense to start with a pre-determined route, since to start with a blank slate would be far more intimidating.

But in all, it’s a pretty fantastic app.

If you want to find out more, you can check out the Google Trips webpage , or Google’s blog about it .

Trips is available for free on Android (obviously) and iOS (surprisingly).

Should I Ask for Reviews on Google or TripAdvisor?

At Odysys, we get this question a lot. Most innkeepers know that asking guests to write online reviews is an essential part of attracting new guests and keeping their brand name strong. Just look at the results of our past Odysys survey:  well over half of innkeepers actively solicit reviews for their property. However, many innkeepers are also unsure of which online review platform is the most important to their business. Though TripAdvisor is the big name in the industry when it comes to reviews, Google reviews may provide the best opportunity for direct bookings. Here’s why.

Reviews are SO Important to Bookings

, Should I Ask for Reviews on Google or TripAdvisor?, Odysys

Online reviews have the power to make or break your property. Travelers trust online reviews just as much as they trust reviews made by people they know. 76% of travelers are willing to pay more for a hotel or bed & breakfast with positive online reviews. A simple 1-point increase in your review score can allow you to charge more for rooms while also attracting more guests to your property. If these stats don’t convince of the importance of online reviews, nothing will.

Not All Reviews Are Created Equal

However, not all online reviews are created equal. You are likely getting online reviews across a wide variety of platforms: TripAdvisor, Google, Expedia, Yelp, Booking.com, even Facebook. While these are all important, your main focus should be on receiving a large number of positive reviews on your Google Business Listing.

The simple fact is that Google highly values the reviews made ON Google for your business. These reviews subsequently influence your ranking in the Google map more than those made on other websites. Positive reviews on Google will help you rank higher on the results page.  Sure, reviews from Expedia, Booking.com, TripAdvisor, ect. factor into the map rankings on Google. They just don’t matter nearly as much as the reviews made directly on Google.

, Should I Ask for Reviews on Google or TripAdvisor?, Odysys

How It Works

Google has an built-in system for vetting the reviewer. When someone leaves a review on Google, Google already knows all about the reviewer. Reviewers have to be logged into Google to leave a review. Therefore, Google knows if they’ve left other reviews, if they’ve searched for your property before, and so on. Google trusts this “first party data” more than it trusts “3rd party data” coming in from the Booking.coms of the world.

According to Moz’s study of local search ranking factors, “quantity of Native Google reviews” is a huge factor. Keep in mind they also value:

  • Velocity of reviews (ie- how frequently reviews are coming in over time)
  • The sentiment of reviews (ie-positive, negative, etc.)
  • Keywords in reviews
  • The actual rating (of course)

, Should I Ask for Reviews on Google or TripAdvisor?, Odysys

How to Get Reviews on Google

So what do you do with all this information? Simply make a point of asking your guests for online reviews, especially for Google reviews. There are many ways you can go about this. You can ask them in person upon check-out, in a “post-stay” email or text, or through a card or note left in the guest room. The most important part is that you are doing it.

Our advice is to always give your guests a choice, such as “Please review us on TripAdvisor or Google.” The truth is that people are more familiar with TripAdvisor reviews and may be more comfortable with leaving a review there, but nudging them towards Google as well is worth the effort. The people who already leave frequent Google reviews will be more than happy to do it and those that don’t know how may even ask.

Lastly, do not copy and paste reviews from one review site to another (or do not ask your guests to copy them from one review site to another). Google is capable of identifying this and can use it as a negative ranking factor. You want the reviews on each site to be individual and unique.

Receiving and managing your online reviews can be a stressful and time-consuming process. Sometimes, it can feel like a full-time job. You have to ask your guests for the reviews, monitor the content and quality of your reviews, and take the time to respond to your reviews, both good and bad . Reviews involve a lot of work but it is work that will pay off in the long run. Always make sure you are asking for your reviews and do your best to steer your guests to Google whenever possible. By focusing on positive Google reviews, you can attract new guests to your property, improve the image of your brand, and help your property rank higher on the search results page.

Pocket-lint

6 ai features in google maps i'm currently obsessed with.

Now, Google Maps feels like Google Search -- and that's a game-changer.

Key Takeaways

  • Google Maps integrates AI to provide immersive view of routes, landmarks, traffic and weather.
  • Use Google Lens in Maps for real-time information on buildings, ratings and hours.
  • Discover specific places and photos by searching with AI through reviews, local guides, and images on Google Maps.

Artificial intelligence is the key driving factor of Google’s latest big features , from smartphones to Search. However, some of the brand’s biggest AI hacks can be found in an app already on many Android and Apple devices: Google Maps .

The latest AI features inside feel like what would happen if Google’s Search and Maps had an illegitimate love child. Google Maps now functions more like Search to find exactly the place you’re looking for. The AI also integrates Google’s extensive knowledge to take Maps beyond just driving directions. AI will now help drivers visualize their routes, showing what landmarks are at each turn and even what the traffic and weather will be like at that time of day. As a photographer, I’m ecstatic about the new ability to type in a feature, like "brick buildings" or "parks with bridges," to find a location based on photos, not just its name.

Google Maps’ new AI features are so impressive, I may just leave Apple Maps behind for good. Here are six new AI features inside Google Maps that you need to try for yourself.

I tested Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze to see which app is actually better

1 visualize your route or preview places with immersive view, see the landmarks, traffic and even weather for your route.

If you tend to drive by landmarks, knowing to turn at the tall red building may be more helpful than knowing to turn down State Street. Directions with I Immersive View are designed to provide not just those landmark details but also insights into traffic and weather. Immersive View uses AI to create an interactive view from Street View images, allowing you to virtually travel through the route before you actually do.

Besides giving you a visual cue as to when your turn is coming up, Immersive View also uses Google’s traffic and weather data to simulate those conditions. Tapping on the clock icon allows you to see the route at a certain time of day. You’ll see more or fewer cars on the road based on how busy the street usually is, and the AI will also simulate the weather conditions.

Immersive View is available in select cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo, and Venice. If the option is available in your area, you’ll see a preview of Immersive View with a 3D icon in the lower-left corner after you type in your route details. Tap on that preview to see a full-screen Immersive Preview. Tap the clock and drag the time slider to see how the route changes at different times of the day.

Like the Immersive View for map routes, you can also use AI to preview certain places . This feature combines Google’s Street View with landmarks so you can check them out before you go. The process works similarly to using the feature for routes. Search for your landmark. If Immersive View is available, the first image in the search results will show a preview labeled Immersive View. Tap on that preview to view it in full screen. The feature is available only in some cities and not for every landmark.

Like the route view, Immersive View for landmarks allows you to preview what the place will look like at different times of the day. For example, you can tap on the clock and preview the different times of day to see whether you’ll get better photos at sunrise or sunset, or see when the rain is predicted to hit.

5 reasons why I use Waze instead of Google Maps

2 use google lens as a virtual tour guide, just point your camera to find anything from restaurants to atms.

Google Lens uses AI to detail what you are seeing through your smartphone camera in real time. Google has now integrated this feature into Maps, which means you can pan your camera around a new city and see what each building is, along with its rating and hours. You can also use it for tasks like finding an ATM. Essentially, mixing Maps and Lens allows Google to act as a virtual tour guide.

To find Google Lens, tap on the search bar inside Google Maps, then tap the camera icon. The Lens-Maps integration is only available in certain cities, so if you don’t see the camera icon, the feature isn’t yet available at your location.

I tested Google Maps against Waze to see which is really better

3 find an ev charging station that isn’t broken, or plan the best stops to power up.

Google Maps can help EV drivers find a charging station. With AI, electric drivers can access even more information. When you search for charging stations, Maps will now display when the station was last used, a good indicator of whether the charging station is functional or out-of-order. You’ll also see feedback from other drivers on how fast the charger is.

Maps will also help EV drivers find the best charging stations to stop at during longer trips, using your route and the rating of the charging station.

Google Maps is making it easier to find your next EV charge

4 search maps just like google for specific places and photos, maps will now use photos to find exactly what you are looking for.

Google has long been the destination for searches like, "things to do in Seattle." But the AI now integrated into Google Maps allows me to use the location app to find places in much the same way. While you’ve long been able to type destinations into the search bar on Google Maps, the integrated AI looks not just at the name of a location but also searches through reviews, Local Guides, and, most importantly, photos.

The new Discover Through Photos update helps find specific oddities, such as a coffee shop with latte art, by searching through photos taken at that location. This means you can even find things that aren’t explicitly stated on the location’s website or reviews. As a photographer, I’m excited at the possibility of being able to search for things like "brick buildings" or "park with a bridge" to find possible locations that match the vibe I want in my photos.

How I quickly find and check my elevation on Google Maps

There’s no trick to using this new feature -- just type what you are looking for into the search bar. Tap on Discover Through Photos if you want to look through images that match your search. While this feature is more widespread, like other AI features, access varies by location. You’ll find better results searching for specifics in a large city.

How often does Google Maps update Street View?

5 see exactly where to walk with ar, overlay google's instructions on your camera's view.

Walking rather than driving? Google's augmented reality mode will overlay the instructions with your camera's view. This allows you to see exactly what path and direction to take.

To find Google Maps' Live View, type in the destination as you normally would, then be sure to choose walk, as the feature isn't available for driving. Then tap the Live View button next to the start button.

What is Google Maps AR navigation and Live View and how do you use it?

6 coming soon: ask ai to plan your trip, an ai-powered chatbot experience is coming to google maps soon.

While AI is already powering more search tools for Maps, generative AI will soon expand that capability even further. Earlier this year, Google announced an upcoming update that uses generative AI to find specific places. The AI searches through not just the web but also the location’s reviews and photos. Like talking with an AI chatbot, you can also ask follow-up questions if you don’t get the results you are looking for. For example, if you ask for activities to do on a rainy day, you might want to follow up with kid-friendly options or a nearby place to eat lunch.

This integrated generative AI works with both typed questions and audio. Google has already rolled this feature out to select Local Guides, but not all users have full access to this feature yet.

Google is redesigning its search engine — and it’s AI all the way down

From ‘ai overviews’ to automatic categorization, google is bringing ai to practically every part of the search process..

A year ago, Google said that it believed AI was the future of search . That future is apparently here: Google is starting to roll out “AI Overviews,” previously known as the Search Generative Experience, or SGE, to users in the US and soon around the world. Pretty soon, billions of Google users will see an AI-generated summary at the top of many of their search results. And that’s only the beginning of how AI is changing search.

“What we see with generative AI is that Google can do more of the searching for you,” says Liz Reid, Google’s newly installed head of Search , who has been working on all parts of AI search for the last few years. “It can take a bunch of the hard work out of searching, so you can focus on the parts you want to do to get things done, or on the parts of exploring that you find exciting.”

Reid ticks off a list of features aimed at making that happen , all of which Google announced publicly on Tuesday at its I/O developer conference . There are the AI Overviews, of course, which are meant to give you a general sense of the answer to your query along with links to resources for more information. There’s also a new feature in Lens that lets you search by capturing a video. There’s a new planning tool designed to automatically generate a trip itinerary or a meal plan based on a single query. There’s a new AI-powered way to organize the results page itself so that when you want to see restaurants in a new city, it might offer you a bunch for date night and a bunch for a business meeting without you even having to ask.

This is nothing short of a full-stack AI-ification of search. Google is using its Gemini AI to figure out what you’re asking about, whether you’re typing, speaking, taking a picture, or shooting a video.

It’s using a new specialized Gemini model to summarize the web and show you an answer. It’s even using Gemini to design and populate the results page.

A screenshot of Google search results showing anniversary-worthy restaurants.

Not every search needs this much AI, though, Reid says, and not every search will get it. “If you just want to navigate to a URL, you search for Walmart and you want to get to walmart.com. It’s not really beneficial to add AI.” Where she figures Gemini can be most helpful is in more complex situations, the sort of things you’d either need to do a bunch of searches for or never even go to Google for in the first place.

  • Google I/O 2024: everything announced
  • Project Astra is the future of AI at Google
  • You can now search the web by uploading a video through Google Lens

One example Reid likes is local search. (You hear this one a lot in AI because it can be tricky to wade through tons of same-y listings and reviews to find something actually good.) With Gemini, she says, “we can do things like ‘Find the best yoga or pilates studio in Boston rated over four stars within a half-hour walk of Beacon Hill.’” Maybe, she continues, you also want details on which has the best offers for first-timers. “And so you can get information that’s combined, across the Knowledge Graph and across the web, and pull it together.”

That combination of the Knowledge Graph and AI — Google’s old search tool and its new one — is key for Reid and her team. Some things in search are a solved problem, like sports scores: “If you just actually want the score, the product works pretty well,” Reid says. Gemini’s job, in that case, is to make sure you get the score no matter how strangely you ask for it. “You can think about expanding the types of questions that would successfully trigger the scores,” she says, “but you still want that canonical sports data.”

A screenshot of a Google AI overview explaining the difference between thunder and lightning.

Getting good data is the whole ball game for Google and any other search engine. Part of the impetus for creating the new search-specific Gemini model, Reid tells me, was to focus it on getting things right. “There’s a balance between creativity and factuality” with any language model, she says. “We’re really going to skew it toward the factuality side.” AI Overviews may not be fun or charming, but as a result, they might get things right more often. (Though no model is perfect, and Google is surely going to face plenty of problems from hallucinated and just straight-up false overviews.)

As AI has come for search, products like Perplexity and Arc have come under scrutiny for combing and summarizing the web without directing users to the actual sources of information. Reid says it’s a tricky but important balance to strike and that one way Google is trying to do the right thing is by simply not triggering overviews on certain things. But she’s also convinced and says early data shows that this new way of searching will actually lead to more clicks to the open web. Sure, it may undercut low-value content, she says, but “if you think about [links] as digging deeper, websites that do a great job of providing perspective or color or experience or expertise — people still want that.” She notes that young users in particular are always looking for a human perspective on their query and says it’s still Google’s job to give that to them.

Over most of the last decade, Google has been trying to change the way you search. It started as a box where you type keywords; now, it wants to be an all-knowing being that you can query any way you want and get answers back in whatever way is most helpful to you. “You increase the richness, and let people ask the question they naturally would,” Reid says. For Google, that’s the trick to getting even more people to ask even more questions, which makes Google even more money. For users, it could mean a completely new way to interact with the internet: less typing, fewer tabs, and a whole lot more chatting with a search engine.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Date of experience : May 16, 2024

Please be assured that we will investigate the matter and reach out to you. We value your feedback and appreciate your patience. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention. Google Takes Next Step in AI Trip Planning

Justin Dawes , Skift

May 14th, 2024 at 4:57 PM EDT

Google is fully in its Gemini era. That’s what executives repeated as they showcased how AI pulls information from across its products to create detailed trip plans and more.

Justin Dawes

Google is diving head first into AI-powered trip planning.

Gemini Advanced , the paid version of the  Gemini  generative AI chatbot, will soon be able to build travel itineraries with a simple prompt in easy-to-understand language.

It’s also strengthening trip-planning options for AI Overviews, the AI feature it released this year for a traditional Google search. AI Overviews has been available only to U.S. users that opt in, but it’s being released to all U.S. users this week and more countries soon.

The search giant revealed the plans on Tuesday at its annual developer conference, Google I/O. Or, as Google CEO Sundar Pichai called it: “Google’s version of The Eras Tour with fewer costume changes.”

To try early versions of these new tools, opt in to AI experiments with Google Search Labs .

Skift will perform its own tests of the updated tools as soon as they are available.

Itinerary Building in Gemini Advanced

Sissie Hsiao, vice president of Google and general manager for Gemini experiences, used a travel example to illustrate how the chatbot is taking a step closer toward the goal of being a “true AI assistant.”

The example started with a prompt: “My family and I are going to Miami for Labor Day. My son loves art and my husband really wants fresh seafood. Can you pull my flight and hotel information from Gmail and help me plan the weekend?”

In the background, the AI creates potential travel options from multiple sources of information. “The result is a personalized vacation plan,” Hsiao said.

Looking at the flight itinerary, the AI knows it needs to create a plan within the length of the trip and allow time before and after each flight.

The flight in the example lands at 4:28 p.m., so the AI doesn’t recommend a big activity but rather three fresh seafood restaurants for 7:30 p.m. It estimates a 20-minute drive from the airport, an hour to drop off bags and freshen up, and 15 minutes to walk to dinner.

The next day is full of proposed activities. Make an adjustment, such as changing the start time, and the AI automatically repopulates its plan.

The trip-planning capability is coming to Gemini Advanced this summer.

Google released Gemini Advanced in February with its most up-to-date AI model at the time. The platform is now getting an upgrade with Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 1.5 Pro, available in 35 languages.

Travel Recommendations in Google Search

Google showed how users can get upgraded tourism recommendations through the traditional search bar.

The upgraded tech is better at answering multi-faceted questions, said Liz Reid, vice president of Search, during the conference.

A prompt that Google used as an example: “What are good options for a day out in Dallas with the kids? Recommend some ice cream shops near each option.”

The first option was the Dallas Zoo, and it listed three ice cream shops nearby.

The other options were Dallas Arboretum and the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, along with three ice cream shop options for each. There was also a map below the results that showed each of their locations.

“Research that might have taken you minutes or even hours, Google can now do on your behalf in just seconds,” Reid said.

Reid demonstrated the capability during the conference with an example of searching for a yoga studio in Boston .

There was a video later with a quick clip showing the above example.

Travel Inspiration in Google Search

Google is also upgrading Search to respond with fuller recommendations during the brainstorming stage, when the prompts are typically less specific. The response includes groups of suggestions organized by the AI.

“What you get here breaks AI out of the box, and it brings it to the whole page,” Reid said.

The example prompt: “Anniversary celebration dinner places Dallas.”

The AI responded with several groups of restaurants based on themes it created: Anniversary-worthy restaurants, restaurants with live music and intimate settings, and historic charm and elegance.

The model also uses contextual factors, like time of the year, Reid said. Since it’s warm now in Dallas, it included a group of options for “romantic” rooftop dining dates.

These AI-organized results pages for brainstorming searches are coming soon for dining and recipes, then expanding to later to include hotels and more.

Positive Points

Revenue growth of 6% year-over-year, reaching $395 million in Q1 2024, demonstrating solid financial performance.

Adjusted EBITDA of $47 million, or 12% of revenue, showing improved profitability and operational efficiency.

Viator revenue grew by 23% year-over-year, with gross booking value (GBV) increasing by approximately 15%, indicating strong demand and market leadership in experiences.

TheFork reported a revenue increase of 17%, driven by bookings and pricing growth, highlighting successful market penetration and operational strategies in the European dining sector.

Continued investment in technology and product innovation, particularly in data and AI, to enhance user personalization and engagement across Tripadvisor platforms.

Negative Points

Brand Tripadvisor segment experienced a revenue decline of 2%, with a specific 5% decline in branded hotel revenue, reflecting challenges in the hotel meta and B2B revenue streams.

SEO challenges and algorithm updates impacted visibility and traffic, potentially affecting user acquisition and engagement metrics.

Initial unevenness in Q2 due to weaker demand trends in April, influenced by external factors such as the timing of the Easter holiday and ongoing macroeconomic uncertainties.

Increased costs in certain areas, such as cloud and media production, which contributed to a 100 basis point increase in the cost of revenue, potentially impacting profit margins.

Concerns about the long-term impact of regulatory matters, including a $10 million accrual related to a potential settlement, which could affect financial stability and investor confidence.

Q & A Highlights

Q : Can you elaborate on the slowdown in Viator bookings and how much of this is due to changes in marketing or distribution channels? A : (Michael Noonan - CFO) The slowdown in Viator bookings is partly due to tough comparisons from previous high growth rates and some weakness in SEO impacting traffic. Despite this, core channels like SEM are performing well, and the app's growth is robust. The company is focused on balancing growth with profitability and market share.

Q : How is the Digital Market Act (DMA) impacting your operations, especially concerning SEO changes? A : (Matthew Goldberg - CEO) While the DMA and other changes in Google's approach affect SEO, it's challenging to directly correlate these changes to our performance. Our strategy focuses on diversifying traffic sources and enhancing direct user engagement through our app and other channels.

Q : What are the expectations for Viator's take rate in the near and medium term? A : (Michael Noonan - CFO) The take rate improvements reflect the value Viator provides to operators, allowing them more control and choice in advertising on the platform. This value is expected to sustain and possibly improve as Viator continues to enhance its offerings and operator benefits.

Q : Can you discuss the supply trends in Viator and any geographical focus for growth? A : (Matthew Goldberg - CEO) Viator has the largest supply of experiences and focuses on maintaining high-quality offerings. Growth strategies include geographic expansion and enhancing supply-demand matching, with a significant focus on North America.

Q : How are changes in traveler behavior and economic factors influencing your strategies? A : (Matthew Goldberg - CEO) Current data does not indicate significant changes in traveler behavior. Despite some macroeconomic uncertainties, travel demand remains robust, especially for the upcoming high season.

Q : What are the strategic priorities for Brand Tripadvisor to transform and diversify its revenue streams? A : (Matthew Goldberg - CEO) The focus is on enhancing user engagement, particularly through the mobile app, and leveraging data and AI to personalize user experiences. This strategy aims to reduce dependence on traditional revenue streams like Meta and drive sustainable growth through diversified monetization paths.
