Half Moon Bay Bucket List: 30 Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

The Half Moon Bay Coastside is just an hour and a half from my hometown and stretches along Northern California’s Highway 1 (from Montara to Pescadero) and inland, for a total of 280 breathtaking square miles. It includes a handful of cute coastal towns and, of course, the city of Half Moon Bay itself. This picturesque (and fun!) area is also a part of the classic Pacific Coast Highway road trip that gets you from San Francisco to Orange County’s Dana Point.

From chowder houses to a glass blowing studio to a stunning bicycle ride along the waters edge—you will find some of the best things to do along the Half Moon Bay Coastside. And here are my top 30 bucket list picks.

victoria secret travel size set

Half Moon Bay Bucket List: 30 Fun Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

1. ✧ buy fresh fish at pillar point harbor.

Fish and seafood are part of the local culture in the Half Moon Bay Coastside and at Pillar Point Harbor fresh fish and crab are brought in daily by commercial fishermen. The best part is that you can go there to buy some straight off the boat! They have a Fish Phone (650-726-8724) that you call to find out what will be for sale.

Or get the Fishline App for your phone to quickly browse today’s catch and purchase seafood. You can use this useful application to get in touch with fishermen, inquire what’s on the “menu” for the day, and reserve your desired seafood. After securing your favorite fish or crab, take it home to clean and cook yourself or pop by Princeton Seafood Market , right next to Pillar Point Harbor, to have it skillfully cracked and cleaned for you.

victoria secret travel size set

2. ✧ Learn to Surf

3. ✦ bicycle (or walk) the california coastal trail.

Cycling along the California Coastal Trail, which starts next to Pillar Point Harbor and ends at the Ritz Carlton, is one of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay, and for good reason. The Coastal Trail abounds with amazing views, which include the Pacific and its coastline, secluded beaches, trees in strange shapes, creeks, wetlands, and grasslands among other scenery. Maybe you will spot whales if you hit a migrating season, but various bird species (owls, hawks, and herons, for example) won’t miss your eye either way. *If you happen to be there in winter, don’t miss to watch surfers riding up to 80-feet high waves on Half Moon Bay State Beach (home of Mavericks big-wave surf competition).

To bike your way from one end of this 7.5-mile (12-kilometer) stretch to another, you would need up to an hour if you don’t take breaks, which you will inevitably do.

Need a bike? Rent one at The Bike Works or Half Moon Bay Kayak Company . There’s plenty of parking at Pillar Point Harbor to start your ride, or if you prefer to start at the Ritz Carlton instead, they have 25 complimentary parking spaces specifically dedicated to the Coastal Trail visitors.

4. ✧ Catch the Sunset at Ritz Carlton

There’s nothing quite as romantic as seeing a gorgeous orange sunset across the Pacific ocean from a luxury resort-like The Ritz Carlton . Either watch it indoors from the Ocean Terrace Bar while sipping a glass of wine or if the weather permits head outdoors and sit on one of the benches along the California Coastal Trail.

5. ✧ Shop for Plants at Pastorino Farms

6. ✦ eat the lobster roll at sam’s chowder house.

First off, let me start by saying that Sam’s famous lobster roll was picked by the food editor of NBC-TV’s The Today Show as one of the five best sandwiches in America! So, it is definitely a must-try on the Half Moon Bay bucket list.

You can get them two ways: Dressed or Naked. The latter (and most popular) of the two isn’t dressed with wagonloads of mayo and such. Instead, it is large chunks of warmed lobster meat lightly tossed with butter on a toasted bun. The fish is the star of the show!

Half Moon Bay Bucket List: Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

7. ✧ Attend the Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival

8. ✦ learn to blow glass.

Learning to blow glass was my favorite thing to do in Half Moon Bay, a big check off my bucket list . Plus, Bay Art Glass is conveniently located right next door to the wine tasting at La Nebbia Winery (I recommend blowing glass before drinking!)

After a short briefing, you are set to create your personal showpiece with the aid of a personal artist (Emily expertly assisted me in making my masterpiece!). Though there are many shapes to choose from (like sea urchins, jellyfish and flowers), Half Moon Bay is well-known for pumpkins and their annual festival related to them, so making one would be an appropriate souvenir. That’s what I did!

Want to book a class? Check out Bay Art Glass class schedule here.

If you ever wanted to know how to blow a glass pumpkin here’s a video of my instructor doing it:

9. ✧ Horseback Ride on the Beach at Sea Horse Ranch

10. ✦ take a goat tour at harley farms.

At Harley Farms in Pescadero you can book a fun dairy dinner in a hayloft (sold out months in advance!), get a taste of some delicious dairy products, purchase bath goods, and above all book a goat tour to see some of the approximately 200 goats at pasture, in the barn and milking parlor.

If you’re lucky, you may even be able to hold a baby one.

Note: Make sure to go on the weekend when the small shop is open and you can buy products made from their goat’s milk, beehives and berries.

11. ✧ See the Tide Pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

12. ✦ check out the surfboards at princeton landing.

It is rumored that surfers, who want to catch a giant wave at Mavericks Beach, store their surfboards on the ceiling at Old Princeton Landing . It’s fun to get a drink with the locals and ogle the collection.

victoria secret travel size set

13. ✧ Attend Mavericks Surfing Competition

14. ✦ get warm artichoke bread at arcangeli grocery.

Arcangeli Grocery (also known as Norms Market) is not only a cute little market in Pescadero, it is famous for their warm artichoke bread. We are not talking like little specks of minced artichokes mixed in, we are talking about huge chunks throughout the bread. It costs just $6.49 and worth every penny.

Grab a loaf (or two) and some other goodies to take to the outdoor picnic are at La Nebbia Winery for an afternoon of food, wine and bocce ball.

15. ✧ Go Bird Watching at Pescadero Marsh

16. ✦ kayak in search of seals.

Renting a kayak and taking it for a spin through the harbor and beyond is an easy thing to do. Half Moon Bay Kayak Co. is located right at Pillar Point Harbor and you can get one by the hour or sign up for a tour. The seals hang out near the launching point, so the chances of you seeing a few are really high.

Not a kayaker or want more adventures? They also have paddleboards and bicycles for rent.

Half Moon Bay Bucket List: Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

17. ✦ Take a Distillery Tour in Half Moon Bay Distillery

The Half Moon Bay Distillery is a grassroots operation, just a couple rooms, but if you have any interest in the distilling process their 45-minute tour explains it well. And, of course, you will have an opportunity to taste craft spirits of this famous distillery, both the Gin and Vodka. The insightful guided tour and tasting is free for guests, but there’s an opportunity to purchase some bottles as the perfect Half Moon Bay souvenir.

NOTE: In a few months Half Moon Bay Distillery will be moving to a new and improved location just down the street.

18. ✧ Go Whale Watching

19. ✦ take a selfie with a dinosaur at spanish town.

The dinosaurs of Spanish Town are right off Highway 92 in Half Moon Bay, and definitely the perfect chance for a cheesy photo op . The rusty life-size statues line the street in front of a little shopping village and countless people visit them daily for the perfect selfie (myself included!).

Beyond the dinosaurs, stroll through the courtyard to shop for all your outdoor statue and fountain needs.

Half Moon Bay Bucket List: Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

20. ✦ Get a Glass of Vino at the Wine Room in Moss Beach

21. ✦ get the smoked monster burger (& a beer) at half moon bay brewing co..

From the moment the server at Half Moon Bay Brewing Co. places it on the table you will understand why it’s called the monster burger—it is ginormous! With further inspection you will see the layers of flavors staring with a smoked chipotle-garlic aioli, followed by a 1/2 pound Harris ranch patty, crispy fried pickles, one sunny side up egg smoked applewood bacon and Gouda. It’s a hard one to tackle, I recommend using the fork and knife method.

Also, try a cup of their New England clam chowder—it was selected by The Food Network as one of the best clam chowders outside of New England.

Did I forget to mention beer? It’s brewed in house and with so many choices you’re bound to fall in love with at least one. My favorite was the Full Swing IPA.

22. ✧ Eat Like the Locals at Duarte’s Tavern

At Duarte’s Tavern in Pescadero they are well known for both their Cream of Artichoke and the Cream of Green Chile soup. It’s not on the menu, but do as the locals do and order a bowl of half & half. The combination of the two flavors is delicious!

23. ✧ Golf overlooking the Pacific

24. ✧ get a quirky souvenir at san gregorio country store.

San Gregorio Country Store is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere, but the random tchotchkes for sale inside are impressive. Where else can you pick up a killer western shirt, 18 flavors of tequila and a mad hatter hat?

victoria secret travel size set

25. ✧ Hike the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve

26. ✦ have a picnic at la nebbia winery.

If you happen to be a fan of special wines, like to hang out with friends or meeting the locals, visit La Nebbia Winery in the town of Half Moon Bay. Here they have a beautiful outdoor area where you can bring a picnic, do a wine tasting, buy a bottle of wine (or two) and spend the afternoon on the patio drinking, playing bocce and socializing. It’s the perfect warm weather thing to do!

victoria secret travel size set

27. ✦ Sleep at a B&B — Mill Rose Inn

If you love a cozy old-fashioned B&B then the Mill Rose Inn is your place! It’s a short block from Main Street, where many of the hottest shops and restaurants are. The property is surrounded by beautiful gardens and the rooms are romantic (there was a fireplace in mine!)

There’s always yummy snacks in the dining room, but the breakfast in the morning is really special. Ask for the fruit & cheese delight and a banana-orange juice, both are their specialties!

Half Moon Bay Bucket List: Things to Do Along California’s Coastside

More places to stay: Seal Cove Inn is perched on top of a bluff seaside, the Nantucket Whale Inn is another cute B&B and for ultimate luxury stay at the Ritz Carlton .

28. ✦ Shop & Eat on Main Street in Half Moon Bay

The downtown is quaint, but packed with delicious restaurants and cute shops. Definitely stop by Oddyssea to shop for science, nature and art products. Plus when weather permits, Oddyssea Outside has creative projects and fun events to participate in (like building your own terrarium or kite).

There are many eateries to choose from—get your pasta fix at It’s Italia or Pasta Moon , get a burger and beer at Sacrilege and grab some Japanese at Sushi on Main.

victoria secret travel size set

29. ✧ Get Fried Food at Barbara’s Fishtrap

30. ✦ get a view of devil’s slide bunker.

Devil’s Slide Bunker, which appears as if about to nosedive into the Pacific, is a remnant of the turbulent times that actually never reached California. Sitting atop a high point of Californian coastline (technically not a part of the Half Moon Bay Coastside, but just a wee bit north of Montara), it used to be an observation bunker of a coastline defense system during the Second World War.

Now it is a photogenic site, beautified with graffiti, to admire from a distance because regulations concerning trespassing through a private property still apply.

California’s Half Moon Bay Coastside may not be that big in size, but it is loaded with bucket list worthy things to do. It has something for everyone, and everything for someone. Even if you happen to be the most discerning traveler, wandering here won’t disappoint.

hi can i ask please if the half moon bay beach area would be suitable for a wheelchair/scooter and how many miles is it to Palo alto please? thanks from the uk

I don’t know about the miles, but it is about 45 minutes to an hour from Palo Alto. Not sure how wheelchair friendly the beach is. We have ridden our bicycles on the bike trail. The trail is better going north from Half Moon Bay, but the south side trail is not very flat.

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay, California

Day Trip Half Moon Bay, California

The Northern California coastline is dotted with charming little towns, quaint farming communities and under-the-radar gems just waiting to be discovered.

I’ve written about a few of these towns before, including Pescadero and Montara . But without question, my favorite of all the NorCal coastal towns stretching between San Francisco and Santa Cruz is Half Moon Bay.

Doesn’t the name alone invoke a feeling of whimsy?

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay, California

This sleepy little seaside town captured my heart from my very first visit. I’m not sure what appeals to me the most: the rugged ocean bluffs that look like they belong in Scotland rather than in California; the moody, omnipresent fog that blankets the landscape; or the rustic family farms and produce stands that dot the coastline.

All I know is that Half Moon Bay fills me with a sense of peace, calm and gratitude every time I visit…which I do as often as I can!

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay

Whether you live in the Bay Area or are just visiting, a day trip to Half Moon Bay is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. It’s located less than one hour by car from cities like  San Jose and San Francisco , yet feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.

Half Moon Bay is a small place, so you truly can experience the best it has to offer in a single day. Here’s what I recommend doing, seeing, eating and drinking on a day trip to Half Moon Bay:

  • Stroll down Main Street in Downtown Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay State Beach

Tide pooling at fitzgerald marine reserve, half moon bay brewing company.

  • Eat at Sam’s Chowder House
  • Watch the sunset at The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay, California

Stroll Down Main Street

Half Moon Bay’s small downtown area is the perfect spot to get acquainted with this quiet coastal town. At just a few blocks long, you won’t need much time to stroll the entire of length of Main Street . However, you’ll certainly want to budget some time for meandering into the various shops, galleries and boutiques.

There are a few historic points of interest located in and near downtown Half Moon Bay as well, including the teeny Half Moon Bay Jail and the beautifully restored Johnston House .

Day Trip Half Moon Bay, California

If you didn’t have time for breakfast before hitting the road, grab a freshly baked pastry from Half Moon Bay Bakery . If you’ve arrived in town closer to lunchtime, pick up sandwiches to-go from  The Garden Deli Cafe at San Benito House  and bring them along to your next stop for a picnic on the beach.

Half Moon Bay State Beach is actually a state park that encompasses four distinct beaches: Francis Beach, Venice Beach, Dunes Beach and Roosevelt Beach. This four-mile stretch of wide, sandy shoreline is known for its crescent shape and dramatic bluffs.

Visiting Half Moon Bay

Stroll along the length of the beach, keeping an eye out for whales on the horizon (true story, I once spotted a gray whale from this very beach).

Half Moon Bay is often shrouded in a layer of fog, especially during the summer. But personally, I think the mist perfectly complements the untouched coastal scenery.

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay

Poplar Beach is located just south of Half Moon Bay State Beach. In addition to being incredibly beautiful, it has the added benefit of being one of the few dog friendly beaches in Half Moon Bay.

Have you ever experienced the enchantment and wonder of peering into a tide pool? It’s truly like taking a look into a portal from another dimension. The amount of life you can see – starfish, urchins, barnacles and more – is incredible!

Located just 20 minutes up the coast from Half Moon Bay, Fitzgerald Marine Reserve  is a beautiful spot to get acquainted with tide pooling.

Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Pro Tip: Before driving all the way to the Reserve, check the tide table to be sure you can time your visit with low tide. If the tide is too high, you won’t be able to see anything at all!

By now, you may be ready to take a break from all the beach strolling. There’s no better place to quench your thirst (and get a buzz) on this stretch of coastline than at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company .

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay

You’ll be treated to a photo-worthy view of the harbor while sipping handcrafted beers brewed onsite. They have some pretty interesting options, like their seasonal Pumpkin Harvest Ale . Feel free to bring your pup along and enjoy the lively outdoor patio.

Dinner at Sam’s Chowder House

A true Half Moon Bay icon, Sam’s Chowder House is one of the most popular dining establishments along this stretch of coastline. The lobster rolls are one of their signature dishes; choose from hot with butter or cold with aioli (#TeamHotLobsterRolls).

Sam's Chowder House Lobster Roll

I recommend arriving for an early dinner, both to avoid the crowds as well as to enjoy the waterfront views from the outdoor patio while there’s still a bit of daylight.

Alternate suggestion: head to Pasta Moon in downtown Half Moon Bay for dinner. I haven’t dined here yet, but based on the reviews it looks phenomenal.

The Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay

Trust me when I say there is no better spot in Half Moon Bay for sipping a cocktail and watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean than the Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay .

You don’t need to stay at the hotel in order to experience its gorgeous outdoor dining space,  The Ocean Terrace . Drinks and appetizers are pricey, but it’s well worth it for the views of the majestic cliffs and crashing waves.

Day Trip to Half Moon Bay, CA

The combination of lush, perfectly landscaped golf course plus rugged coastline honestly makes me feel as if I’ve been transported to Ireland or Scotland…and I suppose the Ritz agrees, given their beloved sunset bagpiper ritual!

It’s lovely, but weekend traffic is truly terrible. Gridlock in and out and up and down the coast. It often takes 2 hours or more to get in or out on 92 or hwy 1. During these fires it is recommended to stay away to keep roads less impacted for emergency and evacuation. Please!!!!

I got the chance to visit Half Moon Bay picking up flowers for my company at a beautiful farm. I just absolutely fell in love with this place. I’ve traveled the world playing music but nothing has come close to this amazing place.

Planning Your Trip

This exclusive spot on the California coastline is a true gem among luxury resorts. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay is a launching point for outdoor adventures and a prime golf getaway. Here is what to bring to make the most of it all.

An ocean-view lawn with lounge-like seating areas

Here's what to pack when planning a trip to Half Moon Bay, California.

Outdoor Adventure

Though it’s just 20 miles from the San Francisco airport, this resort feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city streets. Make the most of it by packing outdoor gear that is prepared for the varying weather of this coastal spot.

  • Although temperatures are mild throughout the year in Half Moon Bay, lightweight layers are a must as the weather can change throughout the day Pack light down jackets that are rainproof and warm if the wind kicks up or the clouds roll in.
  • In summer, bring sturdy sandals to manage the steep (but gorgeous) trail down to the beach or to bicycle along the California Coastal Trail, which passes right through the resort.
  • A fashionable scarf is the go-to accessory for Bay Area residents. Pack a versatile one that matches the rest of your packing list.

Golf Getaway

The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay offers access to two courses with unparalleled views of the Pacific Ocean and challenging play along rugged terrain. Here is what to put on your packing checklist to make sure you are ready for all 18 holes.

  • A lightweight rain jacket and rain pants are essential as Half Moon Bay sits right on the ocean and the weather can change in minutes. Slip your rain gear into the side pocket of your golf bag so you have it if you need it.
  • Half Moon Bay Golf Links require a polo shirt or turtleneck for male golfers. While women can wear outfits without collars, T-shirts and tank tops are discouraged, so women should try to also pack polo shirts or turtlenecks.
  • Spikeless golf shoes are also a must-do at Half Moon Bay Golf Links. You can also wear sneakers or sandals in a pinch, but the rugged terrain of this course definitely deserves solid golf footwear that honors its long green legacy.

Just miles from San Francisco and a quick chauffeured drive to Santa Cruz wine country, this resort offers myriad opportunities for exciting day trips and unforgettable adventures. Don’t forget these essentials as you plan your trip.

  • Whether you are a birder or a nature fan in general, the Bay Area offers unbelievable wildlife sightings from majestic gray whales to adorable sea lions and great blue herons. Bring your binoculars for up-close views.
  • There is no better way to experience this breathtaking locale than on horseback, so bring your cowboy boots (or sneakers). You can gallop along mountain trails or just trot along the coast to take in sweeping Pacific views.
  • Bring sturdy wet shoes for ocean adventures such as surfing the Mavericks or sea kayaking in Pillar Point Harbor. There are rocky coastlines to be wary of, and though they are spectacular, they harbor sharp rocks and angles.

View of a large building complex on a cliff that?s hugged by the ocean below

Half Moon Bay is a mecca for relaxation, whether your brand of leisure is a five-course meal or a long, languid day at the spa. Here’s what to get on your itinerary before you even check in.

The resort’s signature restaurant Navio serves exceptional ocean cuisine crafted with produce from local farms, while overlooking the breathtaking Pacific Coast. Guests have the option to select a three-course Dinner Prix-Fixe Menu, or experience Chef de Cuisine Francisco Simón’s multi-course Chef’s Tasting Dinner Menu, which highlights innovative and sustainable seasonal presentations. On weekends, guests can indulge in an à la carte Brunch at Navio, a tour de force that features individually plated dishes which can be ordered in any quantity during the two-hour experience.

There is so much to take in at Half Moon Bay that you will likely need some time to unwind. The first stop should be the spa, where locally based treatments will help you recharge. Reserve the Coastal Lavender Indulgence, which lets you relax in a warm, fragrant cocoon followed by a light massage, or the Redwood Forest Ritual, which uses earthy herbs and wood blends in a variety of treatments that include a hot poultice massage and a scalp massage. Or choose from the resort’s “secret” spa menu, an ever-changing and highly limited selection of extraordinary seasonal spa experiences.

California’s coastline offers the best of what golf should have: scenic bluffs, unique terrain and holes that are challenging enough to keep you coming back. Reserve your tee time at the par-72 Ocean Course before you arrive — ranked among the best courses in California, it has a Scottish vibe and amazing ocean views. Just as worthy of your attention is the resort’s Old Course. Redesigned by Arthur Hills in 1999, it has fairways lined by cypress trees and a home hole that plays next to the ocean.

Pillar Point Harbor is a protected harbor along the San Mateo coast. It is a refuge to brown pelicans and, in certain seasons, a place to spot majestic gray whales. You can sea kayak right out into its gorgeous waters with a guided tour or all on your own. Contact the concierge to set up your experience. You’ll also want to experience all the Coastal Equestrian Trail has to offer. Local guides at Sea Horse Ranch offer daily trail rides that skirt the fabulous shores of Northern California, giving you panoramic views to snap from your phone and the chance to gallop through fields of wildflowers.

View of a large building complex on top of a cliff in the distance with the ocean and beach below

Quintessential Northern California, Half Moon Bay is one long stretch of gorgeous, wild coastline. Developed as a beach resort in the early 1900s, this tiny coastal community that lies between San Francisco and Santa Cruz now attracts die-hard surfers and city dwellers looking for a laid-back weekend beach escape. While you can catch glimpses of Silicon Valley success here (multimillion-dollar digs along the beach), Main Street is very much trapped in time with knickknack shops and beloved eateries housed in historic buildings. Nature is the big draw, so pack a sweater (the ocean fog has a biting chill) and your hiking boots. Enjoy days spent exploring the coast’s rugged beauty, then retreat back to the secluded setting of The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay to watch as the sun dips behind the Pacific Ocean.

Itineraries

Eco Adventures

The wild coast that hugs Half Moon Bay is home to otters, whales and countless species of birds. Hike or bike the area’s trails, and you’re sure to spot loons and kingbirds. Take to the sea by kayak, stand-up paddle board or surfboard, and you’ll likely meet a resident seal. Quiet evenings revolve around watching sunsets, sipping locally made beer and wine and enjoying fresh-caught seafood at both quaint eateries and fine-dining restaurants.

Fire Pit on the Ocean Lawn

Sea safari.  Half moon bay kayak co. Leads excellent, informative tours of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, leaving from pillar point. Paddle through the sea stacks and along rugged cliffs and observe seals, sea otters and seabirds. During migration months, keep an eye out for blasts of spray from a humpback or pilot whale.

Farm-to-table feast. Starting daily at noon. The conservatory serves a homegrown California-inspired lunch menu. Nearly all of the ingredients come straight from the myriad of local farmers in the region, including steaks off the grill.

Natural giants . Be awed by California’s iconic redwoods during a hike along the Purisima creek trail in the Purisima redwoods open space preserve. These ancient trees grow up to 360 feet, making them the tallest in the world. They’re also one of the oldest, dating back thousands of years. Pack a camera. The trail overlooks half moon bay from the slopes of the Santa Cruz mountains, providing postcard-perfect vistas. And you’ll want an Instagram shot of you being dwarfed by a coast redwood to put the tree’s majestic size in perspective.

Sunset by the sea. The ocean lawn at the Ritz-Carlton, half moon bay is one of the best spots in the area to catch sunsets. Cozy up by one of the fire pits with a local craft brew, like Mavericks IPA, and ingredients for s’mores. The resort even has a bagpiper who serenades the sinking sun.

Healthy start. Grab house-made, vegan or gluten-free baked goods and made-to-order smoothies packed with superfoods like chia seeds, avocado, kale and flaxseed at granola’s coffee house.

Hang ten. Surfers from around the globe head to half moon bay each winter in hopes of riding the big waves at mavericks, the legendary surf break where waves can reach 60 feet in the right conditions. When the swell is mellow, nearby Princeton Jetty is a great spot for beginners to get wet. Surf, sun & fun offers lessons (and provides wetsuits) and will have you up and riding like a pro. If you’re lucky, the resident dolphins and seals might come surf with you.

Farm tour. Tour Harley Farms, a local goat dairy farm known for its delicious cheeses. Meet the baby goats, get a lesson in cheese-making and taste the final product, which you’re sure to spot on the menu at area restaurants.

Fish fight. Originally a roadside shack with eight tables, Flying Fish Bar & Grill earned such a loyal following that the owners had to move into larger digs up the road on highway 92. Locals will debate what’s better, the fish and chips or the fish tacos. Both are delicious options.

Seafood with a view. La Costanera has long been a favorite local haunt thanks to its bright, grand space and views overlooking the water. Enjoy fresh Peruvian-style seafood paired with a stunning view of the pacific.

Walk with seals. At Año Nuevo State Park, naturalists lead guided 2.5-hour walks around the resident elephant seal colony. Expect to hike three to four miles over varied terrain, including sand dunes. Have your camera ready, as the seals are known to show off for visitors.

Farm-fresh classics. Located in a historic train caboose, Dad’s Luncheonette was founded by “Dad” Scott Clark, a former three Michelin star chef de cuisine. Featuring a creative spin to classic roadside bites and inspired by local farm ingredients, Clark’s menu features items such as a grass-fed beef sandwich, a mushroom sandwich, homemade potato chips, and weekend specials. Open Thursday through Sunday.

Spot a kingbird. Pack your binoculars and head to blufftop coastal park, a coastal prairie nestled between half moon bay state beach and wave crest. Steep descents can be challenging so wear sturdy hiking boots or trail sneakers and take it slow. Keep a sharp eye out for loons, pelicans, and kingbirds.

Award-winning chowder. Just steps away from the fishing fleet at pillar point harbor, Princeton seafood company is both a full-service fish market and a delicious restaurant. The family-run spot is a local institution, and foodies make the pilgrimage just for the award-winning clam chowder.

The Perfect Weekend

The journey is part of the appeal of visiting Half Moon Bay. The drive along Highway 1 allows you to take in breathtaking coastal vistas that beckon multiple photo stops. Time slows down when you arrive in the sleepy seaside community of Half Moon Bay. You’ll spend days soaking up the fresh ocean air on coastal trails, kayak excursions and the golf greens. In the evenings, enjoy drinks by the fire pits at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay and let the ocean’s waves wash away your worries.

A dining table set on a cliff overlooking the ocean

Coastal views. Highway 1 is one of America’s most iconic drives. Half moon bay sits about 30 miles south of San Francisco and 40 miles north of Santa Cruz. The stretch of road that lies between offers jaw-dropping views of jagged cliffs and rolling green hills. Pack your camera and be prepared to pull over at least a few times to snap photos of the dreamy view.

Pizza for breakfast. Drive to historic main street for breakfast at Moonside Bakery & Café. The menu has the usual suspects — omelets, pancakes, breakfast burritos — but the local go-to is the breakfast pizza created with their own dough and cooked in the hardwood-fire pizza oven.

Surf’s up. Meander the mavericks cliff trail, a 2.5-mile walk that overlooks the beach and a world-renowned surf spot. Even on a low-swell day, you’re bound to catch a glimpse of surfers hanging 10 or even migrating whales.

Beer with a view. Relax in the afternoon with a pint at half moon bay brewing co. The craft brewery pulls pints of styles ranging from IPA to kölsch, and the patio is dotted with fire pits (it’s also dog-friendly). Lunch on beer-steamed prawns and the Dungeness crab roll. Each month the social-minded brewery hosts a speaker series that tackles topics ranging from politics to environmental issues.

Tee off . Bay area golf fanatics make day trips just to play the two championship courses at the Ritz-Carlton, half moon bay. Set along picturesque coastal bluffs, the historic parkland-style old course is dotted with cypress trees and the 18th hole overlooks the ocean. The ocean course offers more of a challenge as well with an ocean view from every hole.

East coast meets west . Inspired by new England-style seafood restaurants, Sam’s Chowder House, has a straight-from-the-sea menu of oysters, lobsters, fish and chips, and a highly lauded lobster roll that has been called one of the five best sandwiches in America. Choose to cozy up fireside in the dining room or by a fire pit on the patio. The desserts are made on-site. Save room for the Straus organic soft-serve. The vanilla-chocolate swirl is a staff favorite.

Paddle alongside seals. Stop by granola’s coffee house for a coffee or a healthy smoothie, like the blue avocado (blueberries, spinach, flaxseed, banana, avocado and almond milk) then bundle up for a kayak adventure. Half moon bay kayak co. Rents kayaks and stand-up paddle boards, and it’s not unusual for the bay’s resident wildlife — otters dolphins, and seals — to swim up right next to your kayak.

Decadent brunch. San Francisco is often heralded as America’s top food city, but the bay area’s best weekend brunch is found at Navio in the Ritz-Carlton, half moon bay. Seatings start at 11 a.M. And reservations are a must. Expect to spend two hours or more savoring every bite as well as the dining room’s stunning ocean views.

Wildlife hike. Lace up your hiking boots and explore the coastside trail in half moon bay state beach. The path runs parallel to the ocean, with multiple access points to popular beaches like Venice beach. Bird lovers should bring their binoculars. Blue herons, red-winged blackbirds and red-tailed hawks are frequently sighted on the trail.

Find serenity. Relax post-hike at the Ritz-Carlton Spa, Half Moon Bay, where the Redwood Forest ritual will take you on a journey that stimulates your senses and revitalizes your soul. Using a variety of indigenous earthy herbs and wood blends, this ritual will leave you feeling grounded, complete and restored.

Sunset dining. Score a table on the waterfront deck at Miramar Beach restaurant and time your reservation to catch the sunset. This popular spot serves super-fresh seafood dishes, like the signature crab and shrimp linguine.

It’s a cute town and you’ll be spoiled for choice with all of the state beaches, hikes and attractions. This guide is informed by the years we spent living in Half Moon Bay and we still visit frequently– so, you can trust us. So, get ready to bookmark this page because we have some great ideas for you.

Why Visit Half Moon Bay?

Half Moon Bay (HMB) floats in the center of a Venn diagram that merges urban agriculture, small town charm and awe inspiring nature. Agriculturally, it’s known for growing Christmas trees, pumpkins, cut flowers, brussel sprouts and artichokes. (Fun fact for you trivia nerds– in the 1930’s Half Moon Bay had a monopoly on artichoke production in the US and there was a scandal when racketeering thugs from the east coast started an artichoke war .)

Half Moon Bay is also a classic small northern California coastal town with a cute, historic downtown. The town was developed in the 1840’s as “Spanishtown”, and was named for the Mexican settlers were were given land grants. The town got an economic boost during Prohibition when the thick fog gave safe harbor to Canadian rum runners and many of the town’s historic buildings date back to that period.

Many people visit Half Moon Bay for it’s abundant coastal wonders. San Mateo County has 15 state parks and all but three of them line the Coastside or are in nearby tributaries. There are cliffside coastal hikes, tiny crescent beaches, surfing, beachcombing and migratory marine mammals.

This list of things to do in Half Moon Bay offers up a mix of all three of those elements, so that you can sample the agriculture, small town charm and natural wonders that make the Coastside so special.

Got Questions? We Have Answers!

Here are a few commonly asked questions about Half Moon Bay.

How do You Get to Half Moon Bay?

– From San Francisco, go south on Highway 1 for 30 miles. – From the Peninsula, go west over Highway 92 for 15 miles. – From San Jose, take 280 north and then Highway 92 west for 42 miles

How to Beat the Traffic into Half Moon Bay

I used to live in Half Moon Bay, so trust me when I tell you that weekend rush hour traffic is real. Here are three ways to beat it:

1. Go early . If you can get over to the coast before 10am, you can beat the traffic and stake out a nice spot on the beach.

2. Stay late . Hang around for dinner and the sunset and you’ll sit out the worst of the returning traffic.

3. Take the scenic route . My super-secret weapon for a busy weekend is to detour over Skyline Boulevard to either Tunitas Creek (which meets Highway 1 eight miles south of Half Moon Bay) OR La Honda Road (which meets Highway 1 in San Gregorio, ten miles south of town).

Both roads are winding and neither would be faster when the main roads are clear, but they are very scenic and far less frustrating than sitting in traffic on 92. This list of things to do in Half Moon Bay has suggested ideas for the area around San Gregorio and Pescadero, so taking Tunitas Creek or La Honda Road, gets you that much closer to the attractions and activities south of town.

Weather in Half Moon Bay

It is not hyperbole to say that it’s nearly always 64′ in Half Moon Bay. California’s cool coastal climate and mild winters means that the average highs only vary by about 10′ throughout the year. Sure, there can be colder days in the winter and some really nice hot days in the spring or early fall.

But bring a sweater and a jacket and plan for 64′.

It can be foggy in HMB anytime of year, but is particularly more so when the summer heat of California’s Central Valley pulls in the coastal moisture. It frequently rolls in in the later afternoon but will often clear out for sunset.

Can You Swim in Half Moon Bay?

Well, the surfers do indeed swim in the Half Moon Bay beaches, but we don’t recommend it for mere mortals. The water is a very cold 50-60’F and the surfers are doing it in wetsuits. Some of the beaches have riptides. It’s fine to play along the edges of the water on a calm day, but be very careful to keep an eye on the surf.

Half Moon Bay’s Top Attractions, Activities & Drives

These attractions and activities are very family-friendly and offer a mix of nature, agricultural and historical activities.

Pidgeon Point Lighthouse in Half Moon Bay. ocean view and white fence

1. Pidgeon Point Lighthouse

Pidgeon Point juts out into the pacific on a lovely thumb of land south of Pescadero. The lighthouse has been guiding mariners since 1872 (and some of those prohibition era bootleggers since the 1920’s). The lighthouse is indeed still in use today, although they’ve transitioned from a traditional glass lens to LED lighting.

This area is worth visiting not only for the lighthouse, but also for the migratory marine mammals. Seals, sea lions and whales can often be seen passing by. When you visit, bring binoculars and keep your eyes open.

Andreotti Pumpkin Farm Half Mon Bay. Pumpkin display

2. Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Patches

Starting in September, the whole Coastside turns in to one big fall festival. The attractions include pony rides, corn mazes and lots of pumpkin picking. I’m partial to Andreotti Farms because they carry unusual (and very pretty) pumpkin breeds, but check out our guide to all of the Half Moon Bay pumpkin patches to get the full scoop.

Harley Farms goats in Pescadero. baby goat laying down

3. Harley Farms Goat Dairy

Two words: baby goats.

It’s tough trying to decide which is cuter; golden retriever puppies or little baby goats. But when you visit Harley Farms, the voting will definitely tilt toward their adorbs baby goats. Those wobbly legged darlings are just beyond.

And so is the Harley Farms cheese. You see, Harley Farms is not a petting zoo, but rather an actual working dairy and they make very tasty goat’s milk cheeses. If you are interested in learning more about their dairy operation, you can schedule a tour . Otherwise, visit any given day between 11am-4pm to ogle the goats and get some cheese.

4. HMB Kayak Rentals & Tours

If you are keen to get out onto the water, you can rent kayaks and SUPs from HMB Kayak Company in Princeton Harbor. They rent boats, boards and bikes by the hour and also offer guided kayak tours of the harbor and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

Half Moon Bay Kayak rental in Pillar Point harbor. multi colored boats lined up

5. Stage Road Scenic Drive

Stage Road is a winding, seven mile rural drive that meanders between Pescadero and San Gregorio. It’s not the fastest route, but it surely is lovely. You slide past the Mt Hope Cemetery, small farms and eucalyptus groves with soothing pastoral scenery.

6. Tunitas Creek-Purissima Creek Scenic Drive

For a slightly longer scenic drive, take the even more meandering route along Tunitas Creek and Purissima Creek roads. It’s a 17 mile jaunt through pastureland and redwood forest.

Start at Highway 1 and go northeast on Tunitas Creek Road. at 2.7 miles, turn left onto Lobitos Creek Road. Circle back towards Highway 1 but before reaching it, turn right onto Verde Road. After 3 miles, turn right onto Purissima Creek Road and follow the curve into the hills and then back out again, reaching Half Moon Bay after 7 scenic miles.

The Coastside waters are teeming with sea life and marine mammals. Migratory gray whales move through the area between January and March. The humpbacks swim through in the summer. Elephant Seals are constantly coming and going, as are seals, sea lions, dolphins and harbor porpoises.

7. Año Nuevo State Park (for Elephant Seals)

Año Nuevo is a major breeding ground for elephant seals. Every year 10,000 seals migrate to breed, give birth and molt on Año Nuevo’s dunes and the surrounding water. It’s quite something to see these boulder-sized animals defy gravity and hoist themselves up onto the sand for a good, old fashioned mating throwdown. Seeing these behemoths is one of the coolest things to do in Half Moon Bay…but you have to book tours well in advance .

8. Bean Hollow State Park (for Sea Lions)

If you can’t snag an Año Nuevo tour, then the next best thing is a DIY sea lion excursion to Bean Hollow State Beach. There is a steady resident population of sea lions lounging in the rocky shallows at the north end of the beach park. Park at the small lot, then take the blufftop trail a short way south to see the wildlife.

Fitzgerald Marin Reserve in Montara sea anemone

9. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve (for the Cast of Finding Nemo)

The Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is located in Moss Beach, on the north end of the Coastside. The nutrient rich water along this coastline supports a very diverse variety of marine life. The wide rocky coastline at Fitzgerald means that low tide brings a lot of that life closer to the surface. There is a bluff trail where you can see the coastline from above, but the real fun is at water level.

Go out at low tide and very carefully tread on the rocks, where you are likely to find anemone, star fish, crabs and childon. Keep an eye out for the offshore rocks and you can also spot harbor seals. This is a really fun Half Moon Bay activity for kids, but keep a sharp eye on the waves.

Hikes Along the Coastside

When I lived on the coast (and even now that I don’t), one of my favorite things to do in Half Moon Bay was walking the many trails. The trails range from oceanside strolls to hilly hikes with ocean views. We have a whole guide for hiking in Half Moon Bay , but here are a few of our favorites:

Half Moon Bay Francis Beach beachcombing

10. The Coastal Trail

The  California Coastal trail is an ambitious plan to make the entire coastline of California walkable. About 50% of the trail is complete and sections in the Bay Area include the Golden Gate Bridge, through the  Lands End hike  and down through Ocean Beach. There are bits and pieces of it through Pacifica, until the trail lands firmly once again at the Devil’s Slide, where it proceed down through Half Moon Bay.

My favorite section of it goes from Pillar Point Harbor south into Half Moon Bay. This stretch is flat and paved, making it kid, stroller and bike friendly. It goes past Surfer’s Beach, Dunes Beach, Venice Beach and Half Moon Bay Beach before ending 4.5 miles later at Poplar Beach.

Another option is to take the dirt path from Poplar Beach 3 miles south to to Wavecrest Beach, where you can see the Ritz Carlton. Just pick a section for however much time and energy you have and enjoy the ocean views.

victoria secret travel size set

11. Devil’s Slide Trail

Devil’s Slide was once a problematic bit of roadway prone to rock slides. In 2013 they (finally!) completed a bypass tunnel. Following that, the county to converted the road into a pedestrian walkway and bike path.

It’s not a particularly long hike, nor a technical one, but it has some of the best ocean views of any hike in the Bay Area. It’s an easy 2.5 mile round trip and you can find more information on why and how to do the hike using our Devil’s Slide guide .

12. Quarry Park

Quarry Park is a local’s secret. The park is located in the hills above El Granada. Visiting the shady Quarry Park is perfect for a warm day or if you are looking for some peace and quiet among the eucalyptus trees. Check out our Quarry Park guide , which includes detailed info on how to do the full 4 miles loop.

Quarry Park Half Moon Bay hiking trail. Trees and woman with dog

13. Hiking in Montara State Beach

Montara State Beach does indeed have a beach. But it also has three major trailheads above the beach in the McNee Ranch property. You can take the easy 2.2 mile Gray Whale Cove trail that parallels Highway 1. You can take the 4.7 mile, dog-friendly Colma Loop trail which gets you up above the Devil’s Slide. Or perhaps start out on the Montara Mountain trail and then add whatever distance you wish, looping back on one of the many connecting trails.

Half Moon Bay’s Best Beaches

Yes, of course, visit the baby goats, but don’t forget that Half Moon Bay has some of the best beaches in Northern California. We’ve listed a few of our faves below, but if you want more, check out our article on the 10 best beaches in Half Moon Bay .

Half Moon Bay State Beach Park. Ocean view from the bluff

14. Half Moon Bay State Beach

This state beach park has four miles of wide sand encompassing a good chunk of the bay. It’s great for a few reasons; the first is that it’s the only Coastside beach park offering camping. The second is that it’s very easy to get to from Highway 1 and downtown. And the third is that the beach gives you the option of taking a very long stroll on the beach but is also adjacent to the blufftop Coastal Trail.

Local’s tip: the more popular part of the beach is located at the official campground on Francis street. However, Dunes Beach and Venice Beach are also part of the state beach park and they tend to be quieter spots. The main downside to HMB Beach is that it isn’t dog friendly.

Get the full downlow with our Half Moon Bay state beach guide , which includes a full FAQ, camping and activity information.

Read More : Get the full downlow on all CA parks with our complete California State Parks list (with map).

15. Poplar Beach

Poplar Beach is where to go in Half Moon Bay if you want to bring your pooch. It’s located just south of Half Moon Bay state beach. It has the same wide sand beach and coastal trail access with the added bonus of being dog friendly.

Paid parking is available at the end of Poplar street and it’s a short hop down the bluff. People tend to cluster right at the base of the entrance, so if you want some privacy, just head south 5 minutes and you’ll have a stretch of lovely beach all to yourself.

16. Mavericks Beach

Mavericks is located at the northern tip of Pillar Point Harbor. It’s best known for hosting a world class big-wave surfing competition, but it has a lot to offer regular mortals as well. Maverick’s not a classic sandy beach, but I like it because, in addition to Poplar, it’s is also very dog-friendly. So, if you are in the mood for a wind-swept stroll amidst the waves while your dog dances around with joy, Mavericks is your spot.

There is also a small beach in the harbor which is very kid-friendly.

Gray Whale Cove swing

17. Gray Whale Cove

Gray Whale Cove is a lovely little link in the chain of beaches that stretch along the Coastside. It’s located just south of the Devil’s Slide. It’s a great spot to go if you simply want to grab a quiet moment and stare at the waves. There’s also a cute swing installed at the top of the bluff if you want to have an Instagram moment.

Here’s our guide for Gray Whale Cove .

Pescadero State Beach arch

18. Pescadero State Beach

Pescadero offers up a trifecta of ocean experiences. The northern end has a wide sandy beach, which is perfect for strolling and constructing driftwood sculptures. The south end has a rocky promontory which is great for tide-pooling. And the estuary to the east has hiking and bird watching in the Pescadero Marsh.

Check out our Pescadero State Beach guide before you go because parking can be tricky we have have some tips for you.

Where to Shop on the Coastside

If you are more into shopping and less into nature, there are still plenty of things to do in Half Moon Bay that will keep you busy for a full weekend getaway.

Half Moon Bay Gourmet Appliance store

19. Downtown Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay has a cute historic downtown with lots of restaurants and shops. The main drag is only four blocks long, but an earnest shopper can kill several hours there. Here are a few of my faves:

  • Luz Luna carries fair-trade handicrafts from Central America. They have lovely small household trinkets, cute kid’s clothes, stuffed animals and jewelry. Great for Christmas gifts.
  • Gourmet Appliance carries kitchen gadgets, lovely cookbooks and fancy foods.
  • Coastside Books has an eclectic assortment of new and used books.
  • Half Moon Bay Feed & Fuel has hay and and farm equipment, which you probably don’t need. But they also sometimes have baby chicks, which are adorable, so you should stop in and see them.

20. Pastorinos Flowers

Not only is Pastorino’s on point for the pumpkin festival, but they carry cut flowers and gifts throughout the year.

San Gregorio General Store in California

21. San Gregorio General Store

This cute spot in San Gregorio is a popular stopping point for road trippers, bicyclists and motorcyclists. The store carries gift items like fun household goods, socks with whacky sayings, sun hats and recipe books. They also offer coffee and a full bar.

22. Pescadero Shops

If you are visiting Harley Farms, then leave a little bit of time to check out the shops in Pescadero. They don’t have much of a main drag, but they have some tiny little microshops that are worth stopping into like: The Sunshine (which has gourmet foods) and The Shops (which has a perfumer and a potter).

Where to Eat in Half Moon Bay

There are plenty of great places to eat in Half Moon Bay, but the following are notable because they offer something special in the way of ambiance, attitude or cuisine.

Half Moon Bay Brewing Company exterior patio

23. Half Moon Bay Brewing

HMB Brewing was one of the first craft breweries on the Peninsula and they’ve been perfecting their beer since 2003. They have a wide ranging menu and popular items include include the burgers, fish & chips and salads, but I like their gutbusting nachos. However, more than the food, what makes HMB Brewing special is their patio. It’s large, covered in firepits and has great harbor sunset views.

24. San Benito House Deli

This shoebox of a deli in downtown Half Moon Bay produces the best sandwiches on the Peninsula. Their secret is homemade bread baked fresh every day. It doesn’t even matter what they put in between the slices because the bread is so good. Stop there to pick up some lunch before hitting the beach.

Downtown Half Moon Bay Moonside Bakery

25. Moonside Bakery

Because sometimes you need to fortify yourself with home made baked goods. Moonside is in downtown HMB and they bake up yummy cakes, tarts and cookies

26. Arcangeli’s

This is a small grocery store in Pescadero. It’s a good spot to stop for picnic items if you are going to Pescadero or Pomponio Beach. They do have great sandwiches. But I recommend picking up some cheese, deli items and a loaf of their famous artichoke bread.

27. Duarte’s

Duarte’s has been making downhome food since 1894. They have a rotating selection of daily specials and they are best known for their artichoke soup and olallieberry pie. Their best, secret off-the-menu item is a mixed soup with 1/2 artichoke soup and 1/2 green chili soup. Order that!

Cameron's pub in Half Moon Bay exterior with red bus and bike

28. Cameron’s Pub

Cameron’s is a classic British pub, complete with red double decker buses. They have a standard pub menu and their burgers and ribs are good. They have a full bar but are really known for their wide selection of beer. It’s a very friendly place and Cameron himself is often hanging about.

29. La Nebbia Winery

They don’t grow wine grapes in Half Moon Bay, but that hasn’t stopped La Nebbia from making wine. They make a wide range of reds, whites and dessert wines using grapes sourced from around California. Going there is fun because they have a really nice outdoor patio with a bocce court and picnic tables. You can order charcuterie plates from them or bring your own picnic.

Jettywave distillery in Princeton Harbor. cocktail glass and sign

30. Jettywave

This fresh new spot in Princeton Harbor is a great place to catch a drink at the end of the day. They have a very creative cocktail menu and seating with firepits so that you can stave off that 64′ HMB temperature. There is also a food pop-up serving chewey, blistered, delicious pizzas.

Another cool place to checkout is the Old Princeton Landing (OPL) great food and music and while your waiting checkout all the big wave surfboards hanging in the rafters. Good Times.

Yes, sadly, the writer failed to mention all the excellent restaurants at the Princeton Harbor including The Princeton Seafood Company, Ketch Joanne’s, Barbara’s Fish Trap, Mezza Luna (& Caffe Mezza Luna for Cappuchinos, Pastries and light fare plus the HMB Brewery (not in Half Moon Bay – by the way) as well as the Hop Dogma Brew Pub.

We definitely have Half Moon Bay on our travel wish list for a return to California. So it was great to see that there was so much to see and do. Beyond those stunning sea views. I would love to watch the surfers. But would be wary about swimming in those waves. Can’t wait to get back to California.

Thanks for this fantastic list of things to do. I would really enjoy this. I live at the beach but on the east coast. The rugged coastline of the west coast really appeals to this beach girl.

Wow! Thanks for the fabulous post. I would love to do all of them, especially, Quarry Park and Gray Whale Cove.

This looks incredible. I can see why the band train wrote a song about this beautiful place. We need to spend more time on the California coast – it is just beautiful! Thank you for sharing!

Looks fantastic on my wish list for when we return to California

I had lunch in Half Moon Bay once, but have not spent time there at any of these great places you suggest. I live in Washington State and you have inspired me to make this a long weekend destination…perhaps this coming summer. I had no idea there was so much to see, do and eat! Thanks for a great post. Saving for later planning purposes.

I am surprised you did not mention the high winds that blow cold from the North. Although, truth be told you will be spending most of your time in the car because it can take up to an hour or more in traffic to travel less than a mile. Hwy 1 or 92 are the only main roads unless you can navigate safely around the road bicycles that tend to travel in packs. On Very narrow windy roads. Very often the beach and park parking are full and there my not be an alternative.

Where would you recommend visiting instead?

Best food and drinks in Half Moon Bay is at Sacrilege Brewery and Kitchen at 730 Main Street. Great beer and food.

Thanks for the tip. I’m going to check them out

TheBeach house is excellent for accommodations. We visited in December to attend a wedding at Hastings House and gardens. Dined at Mezza Luna which was excellent.
