It was bittersweet as Meadow Brook Amphitheatre hosted what would be Detroit’s last stop on the full cross country run of Vans Warped Tour. The date had sold out weeks in advance, leaving the crowd highly anticipated for the long day of sets.

The gates opened and fans quickly flooded the venue, catching one of the many opening bands such as Tonight Alive , Sharptooth , Makeout or Detroit’s own A War Within .

This is one of the first years in a while that it was not a sweltering 90+ degrees. However, as the clouds rolled in the rain did cause minor delays for the main stages. Unfortunately, the local stage that was to feature bands such as Our Vices , Torchbearer and Scapegoat was permanently shut down due to weather. This proved to be a fault on the tour’s end, as the sun quickly came back out.

“For us, Warped Tour was an awesome experience. Despite not getting to play, we still had an amazing time and got to experience all of Warped for it was. We were thankful to be able to say we were still part of the last full country Warped Tour.” said Brandon Murdoch of Torchbearer.

“Although cliche sounding, Warped was that one day of the year where you were free from everything going on in the world and could just run around a huge parking lot watching your favorite bands with your friends.” said Jon Rechsteiner, “Being in a band who always aspired to play I am very grateful we got the opportunity this year as well as last despite the rain.”

Caleb Shomo of Beartooth  gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of Warped, and thanked Kevin Lyman for the opportunities it presented bands and fans.

The Detroit date featured a handful of bands that were not on the entire cross country run such as Silverstein , Capstan, Bowling for Soup ,  and  Four Year Strong .

The Full Sail Stage also featured local talent from Boys of Fall ,  For We Are Many, Vegas Lights and Southpaw .

The line up this year featured a blend of genres, from pop icons 3OH!3 to pop punk legends Simple Plan to some of the heaviest of bands like Kublai Khan.

Warped Tour brings rock with a side of nostalgia on final Detroit stop

warped tour 2002 detroit

For more than two decades, it was one of the most dependable sights on the summer concert calendar.

And now the Vans Warped Tour has bid farewell to Detroit for good, hitting Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on Friday as the punk and alternative rock festival moves into its final two weeks.

A generations-spanning crowd filled the rolling hills and fields of the Rochester Hills site, where Warped served up 70-plus bands on a musically upbeat day that came with a sad and sentimental undercurrent. It was a lineup where fest veterans (Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup, Less Than Jake) played alongside the sort of up-and-comers Warped has long helped to break.

As always, set times weren’t revealed until the day of show — posted on a big board near the main entrance Friday morning. In keeping with the festival’s progressive ethos, it was as egalitarian as ever: Nobody was billed as a headliner, and the big-name bands were scattered across six stages, including Meadow Brook’s main amphitheater, throughout the 12-hour event.

After some early afternoon rain, the sun was out by the time the Maine hit the stage at 4 p.m. to deliver a fitting blast of ‘90s nostalgia with a cover of Blur’s whoo-hoo’ing “Song 2.” In matching red outfits and backed by a couple of dozen fans onstage, the Arizona band whipped up bouncy pop-rock via songs like “Everything I Ask For” and “Girls Do What They Want.”

Across the way, Palaye Royale did guyliner-streaked glam with garage-rock swagger, as Australia’s Amity Affliction drilled through a set of metal-fueled hardcore.

It was testament to the eclectic spirit that has driven Warped since it emerged in 1995 as part of that decade’s array of road festivals, tours that included Lollapalooza, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. and Lilith Fair. Warped was long since the lone survivor of that traveling bunch, but rising costs and a changing concert industry finally convinced founder Kevin Lyman to pull the plug.

Music culture has certainly morphed dramatically since the mid-'90s, but if there were worries the Warped Tour had become a stale brand, you wouldn’t have known it Friday: Meadow Brook was jam-packed — the show sold out two weeks ago — and most fans seemed to arrive with the excitement and quest for discovery that has always marked the event.

For 24 years, metro Detroit was one of Warped’s most successful markets, and the fest played the sprawling grounds of sites such as Pontiac’s Phoenix Plaza, the Pontiac Silverdome, the Palace of Auburn Hills and Comerica Park. Friday was the first time at the smaller-scale Meadow Brook, whose lush feel and grass fields gave it a big edge over the hard pavement of those prior stops.

For 26-year-old Claire Kuhn, who grew up in Rochester Hills and now lives in Manhattan, it was a bittersweet day. She’d attended her first Warped fest at 14, and this year’s denouement was sad news: “I cried every time I heard that,” she said.

“I knew my final Warped Tour needed to be in Detroit,” said Kuhn. For the price of a rental car and a $50 ticket, “I feel like I got a bargain to relive my childhood.”

Standing in the Meadow Brook pavilion just after We the Kings’ set, Kuhn said it was like being back in high school — though this time many fans from her age cohort had shown up with their own young kids in tow.

Warped’s colorful midways offered the familiar arrangement of record-label tents, merchandise booths, carnival food and — of course — the prominent presence of shoe sponsor Vans, which did brisk business in “Warped Final Run” T-shirts. Nearby was a skateboard halfpipe, a nod to the festival’s origins.

Social causes made their mark onsite: marrow-donor signups, “Born This Way” pride merchandise, STAPAW.com — a global effort to Support Tattoos and Piercings at Work.

For the suicide prevention group Hope for the Day, this was Warped Tour number five, and founder Jonny Boucher has become a familiar onstage presence between band sets. The festival has been a prime spot to interact with vulnerable young people, helping de-escalate troubled situations and pushing the message: “It’s OK not to be OK.”

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 15-to-24-year-olds — an age group that traditionally has constituted about 85% of the Warped audience, said the organization’s Christmas Eger.

The Warped partnership has "been incredible,” Eger said Friday, and the festival’s demise “is a real challenge for us" as the organization aims to stay connected with young music fans in summer 2019.

As perfectly delightful weather settled over Meadow Brook late Friday afternoon, the music kept humming — a blast of the brisk sets that have been the Warped Tour’s hallmark. On one stage roared the muscular, tattooed metalcore of Every Time I Die; nearby was the breezy, horn-spiced ska-punk of Reel Big Fish.

Amid the high spirits, the air of looming finality hung over the proceedings — and the moment wasn’t lost on fans and bands.

“It’s the last Warped Tour ever,” said Reel Big Fish front man Aaron Barrett, who promptly reacted to the predictable crowd response: “It’s OK to boo!”

Warped Tour: A Look Back in Photos in Honor of Its Last Hurrah

hayley-williams-warped-tour-lede.jpg

Last year, Warped Tour’s founder, Kevin Lyman, announced the end of an era: After nearly a quarter of a century, the monumental fest would make its “final, full cross-country run.” The news is now sinking in as a reality as the tour’s final date, August 5th, fast approaches. What’s been known as Vans Warped Tour since 1996 has equally officially been known as a place for aspiring alts trapped in the suburbs to flourish—one that just so happened to make history in the process. Warped Tour was not only a launching pad for Green Day, Katy Perry , Blink-182, and even Eminem; it was also a documentation of the birth of emo as we know it in the aughts, seen through its lineups’ shift from punk acts like Bad Religion, Rancid, the Casualties, NOFX, and Anti-Flag to bands like All Time Low, Simple Plan, Sum 41, Taking Back Sunday, the Used, and From First to Last—the latter of which featured one long-haired, screaming emo heartthrob Sonny Moore, now better known as Skrillex . In case you hadn’t noticed, pretty much all of the above feature almost exclusively white men—a lack of diversity that’s unfortunately continued into the 50-plus bands chosen to make up Warped Tour’s last hurrah. (Joan Jett is putting in her usual appearance, but Paramore’s flamed-hair Hayley Williams, essentially the only woman who managed to become a face of Warped Tour throughout its history, is noticeably missing from this year’s lineup.) Take a look back at that history, flaws and all, with the best photos of its glory days, including flashbacks to Perry’s guitar, Oli Sykes’s neck tats, Benji Madden’s snake bites, Jared Leto’s lipstick, Pete Wentz’s popped collar, Demi Lovato ‘s sweeping side bangs, and Jeffree Star’s infamous hot-pink mop, here.
