When the hustle and bustle of city life gets overwhelming, a getaway to Napa Valley sounds like just what the doctor ordered. But then the reality of Bay Area traffic starts to set in, and a weekend of Netflix and chill on the couch sounds more likely.

Don’t let your dreams of vineyard tours and heavenly wine tastings fade! There are plenty of great Napa Valley wine tours originating from San Francisco, making it easier than ever to visit your favorite wineries without ever having to take your car keys out of the junk drawer. From classic group tours to fully-customized private experiences to journeys from the sky, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite Napa Valley wine tours from San Francisco.

Beau Wine Tours

5 of the Best Napa Valley Wine Tours from San Francisco

Take a bus, take a limo, take a trip in style to some of the best wineries in California on one of these five great Napa Valley and Sonoma wine country tours from San Francisco.

The film ‘Sideways’ may have propelled pinot noir wines to film-fan stardom, but the wine regions of Napa Valley and Sonoma have so much more to offer. Learn to distinguish your Riesling from your Chardonnay; your Syrah from your Cabernet Sauvignon at a wine tasting on a cheap tour. Or, if you’re already well aware of those delineations, simply explore the USA’s premier wine region and discover new local wines right at their source. Here are five of the best wine tours, all from San Francisco, to try today.

Half-Day Wine Country Excursion from San Francisco

Among the best value Napa Valley and Sonoma tours is this five-hour trip from San Francisco, taking time to stop at two wineries where you’ll be able to enjoy up to five wine tastings. The itinerary also includes time to take a wine estate tour, where you’ll learn the inner workings of the production process and see the vine-clad slopes where future bottles get their start. This tour departs on most days of the year. From $99 per person.

Book at Getyourguide.com

Small-Group Sonoma Wine Tour with Tastings

Sonoma’s wineries are not quite as globally recognized as those of neighboring Napa Valley, but that essentially means the area is less touristy. This tour visits three boutique wineries in the region, offering a wine tasting at each. Groups are limited to 13 people and there is live commentary on board the air-conditioned van as you travel through the city and countryside, with an additional photo stop at Golden Gate Bridge. Lunch is not included in this tour, although time is allowed for lunch at Sonoma Plaza. From $149 per person.

winery tours from san francisco to napa valley

Napa and Sonoma Wine Valley Tour

For a tour that incorporates Napa Valley, as well as Sonoma, while still fitting three winery visits and tastings into the itinerary, there’s this eight-hour trip from San Francisco. There’s plenty to see during the journey, too, such as the Golden Gate Bridge. Learn about the region’s wine history, including how grapes were first brought here by Spanish missionaries, along the way. Lunch is not included but a stop will be made with time allotted at either Sonoma Plaza or The Marketplace in Napa. From $149 per person.

Muir Woods Redwood and Wine Country Tour

While there’s a great deal of rural beauty to be encountered in and around Napa Valley, the agrarian imprint of viticulture dominates the vistas with its neatly ordered lines of grapevines. The lines at Muir Woods National Monument, which you’ll visit on the way to wine country as part of this tour, are vertical and centuries old, belonging to the majestic redwood trees that the monument protects. Additionally, three Sonoma and Napa wineries are visited during the ten-hour trip. Please note that the Muir Wood entry fee is not included in the price. From $159 per person.

Small-Group Napa Valley Tour for Wine Lovers

For the very best of Napa Valley’s whimsy and history, there’s one tour which focuses exclusively on this celebrated Californian wine region. Among the three wineries you’ll visit is the Tuscan, medieval-style castle of Castello di Amorosa. Another stop is at Tamber Bey Winery, where you’ll try Merlot and Chardonnay wines. The estate also includes an equestrian ranch. Finally, there’s Carneros, where the vineyard has been producing wines for over a century. This tour runs from Sat to Thu each week. From $259 per person.

On your way back to downtown Napa, you’ll enjoy one final treat, coffee and dessert in the train’s lounge car.

Fun Fact: Grgich Hills is an award-winning, family-owned winery, whose tasting room was transformed into a movie set by well-known screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen for the movie “Judgment in Paris”.

The Ambassador

This itinerary starts with an educational wine seminar, after which you’ll hop aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train. En route to the charming town of St. Helena, you’ll enjoy a gourmet 3-course meal in the Petit Gourmet Car, followed by coffee and dessert.

After arriving in St. Helena, you’ll board a luxury coach headed for Charles Krug Winery. Charles Krug boasts the title of oldest winery in Napa Valley. While there, you will taste their most-limited wines, learn about the winery’s namesake and the Mondavi family history.

After departing from Charles Krug, the coach will take you to Raymond Vineyards about an hour away.  Raymond Vineyards’ wines are 100% certified organic and produced exclusively with solar-sourced energy. While there, a guide will engage your mind and senses in a series of tastings and 1-hour educational tour.

Best Wine Tours from San Francisco to Napa & Sonoma

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: January 29, 2024

Taking one of the wine tours from San Francisco to Napa or Sonoma is a great way to spend the day. You have several options to visit these regions, ranging from a half-day bus tour to a helicopter tour over the beautiful Napa Valley vineyards.

These two popular wine tasting regions are just over an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Many tours pick you up at your hotel in San Francisco, stop at two to four wineries, and drop you back off at your pickup location.

During each tour, you will sample local wines as you learn more about each one from your knowledgeable guide and a staff member of the winery.

You will often get the chance to take a behind-the-scenes tour of at least one winery and a walk through their vineyard. Most tours will also stop so you can pick up lunch and enjoy it on the grounds of a selected winery.

Disclaimer : I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

What to Expect Each Season

My favorite time to go wine tasting is during harvest, which is from mid-August to mid-October. The vineyards are gorgeous during this time of year, with both the leaves and grapes vibrant in color. In addition, the entire region is bustling with harvest-related activities.

Though Napa and Sonoma are most colorful and active during harvest, there are advantages of taking one of the wine tours from San Francisco at other times of the year. This gives you some pros and cons of visiting during each season.

Pros : The vines are in bloom, which gives you the chance to see the early stages of the cultivation.

Cons : It's not a great time to take photos of the vineyards as the leaves are small and the grapes are not yet on the vines.

Pros : The weather is warm and it's sunny almost every day. It's the perfect time to walk around the vineyards and spend some time outside sampling your wines.

Cons : This is the busy season for visitors. The tasting rooms get crowded (especially on the weekends) and it's harder to move around (although most wine tours from San Francisco do their tastings in a private room, so this may not be a big issue).

Pros : It's harvest time! The leaves and grapes are mature and colorful. It's the best time to take photos of the vineyards. You will also get the chance to see part of the wine-making process.

Cons : This is the second busiest season for visitors and it's extra busy all around the region due to harvest. You may have to wait longer in line to sample wines and/or buy goodies in the stores.

Pros : This is the perfect time to go if you don't want to battle the crowds. It's my second favorite time to visit since the tasting rooms are empty and most wineries offer a more personalized visit. Some even offer wine specials during this time to clear the way for their new releases.

Cons : It's cool and rainy. The vines are brown with no leaves or grapes. It's not a great time to take photos or walk around the vineyards.

Now that you know a little about what to expect each season, are you ready to sample some great California wines? Read on to find out about the best wine tours from San Francisco.

Should you buy wine directly from the winery.

Many people believe that they get the best deal when they buy directly from the winery. This is not always true.

Most wineries distribute all over the US and some even ship their wines around the world. The prices at your local wine shop are often comparable to what you will find at the winery itself.

However, most wineries feature wines in their tasting room that you cannot buy anywhere else. These sell at a higher price point, as they are typically a higher quality.

If you love a certain wine, ask the winery a few questions before buying, including where you could find that particular wine in your local area. If they happen to sell it locally, it will save you the hassle of carrying or shipping your wine home.

Should You Sign Up for Their Wine Club?

If you really enjoy the wines from a specific winery and the wines are hard to find, then I recommend signing up for their wine club. This automates the process so you can receive more of their delicious wines each month or quarter.

As a member, you are also often the first to receive new releases or limited production wines. Most memberships include free tastings in their tasting rooms and discounts when you buy more wines online or in person. You will also receive invitations to their exclusive parties.

Another great thing about these clubs is you can usually opt out after the first delivery. If you regret signing up after your visit, then simply call and tell them to cancel your membership.

If you don't drink much wine or you don't have a great place to store it, then skip the wine club membership. You can always buy their wines online or contact them directly for a shipment.

A Few Additional Wine Tasting Tips...

Is this your first trip to wine country? No problem, here are a few helpful hints to help you prepare.

  • Eat Before Tasting : Eat a good breakfast before you leave your hotel, so you are ready for a full day of tasting.
  • Don't Wear Perfume : Leave the scent of your perfume and lotions at your hotel. This allows your nose (and others' noses!) to fully experience the beauty of each wine.
  • Taste Like a Pro : Swirl, sniff, sip, and repeat to savor all of the aromas and flavors.
  • Ask Questions : Don't be afraid to ask questions as the wineries LOVE talking about their wines.
  • Enjoy Your Day : Wine tasting is a slow process so you can remember every moment, flavor, and wine. Take your time as you taste and savor the experience.

Don't feel intimidated at all in wine country. People in Napa and Sonoma are very friendly and welcome both newcomers and seasoned tasters. They want to help with the process and love to give information to all tasters, so they become more familiar with their wines.

Wine Tours from San Francisco: Create Your Own Tour

Are the guided wine tours from San Francisco not right for you? Would you rather set out on your own? It is easy to get to Napa or Sonoma for the day from San Francisco. Here are just a few tips if you plan on going on your own.

  • Rent a Car in SF : Don't rent a car from the airport, wait until you get into San Francisco and rent your car there, just for the day. You really don't need a car in the city but will need it if you head to up to Napa or Sonoma on your own. Just make sure you check how late the rental car company is open, since some close early certain nights of the week.
  • Pick a Region : There are hundreds of wineries in northern California and it's not possible to visit all of them in one day. Select only one region--Napa, Sonoma Valley, Dry Creek Valley, etc.--and plan on visiting around four or five wineries during your trip.
  • Schedule Appointments : Set up tasting tour appointments in advance. Most wineries have open tasting hours, but it's fun to learn a little more by setting up a tour. You can simply call a few wineries ahead of time or look on their sites to see if they have regularly scheduled visits.
  • Get Recommendations : Ask others in the tasting room for recommendations. This is a fun way to learn about special tastings, winery events, and other wineries in a specific region that you must see.
  • Return via the Golden Gate Bridge : Take the Golden Gate Bridge back to San Francisco. No matter which region you visit, you will want to plan your return trip to San Francisco using the Golden Gate Bridge. You will most likely hit rush hour traffic on the way home, and the best option is the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hotel Deals : Would you love to stay the night in either Napa or Sonoma? Before you book, make sure to check out the great hotel deals on Booking.com. Click here to find deals in Napa . Click here to Sonoma hotel deals .

How to Travel from San Francisco to Napa Valley by Car, Bus, and Ferry

winery tours from san francisco to napa valley

From San Francisco , California's wine-famous Napa Valley is 60 miles to the north. The region is a popular daytrip from the Bay Area, but it doesn't have just one destination. There is, of course, the town of Napa, as well as Oak Knoll and Yountville , all of which provide lively social centers with shops and attractions. However, Napa's true appeal is in exploring the vineyards along the way.

Public transportation is a slow way to get to Napa and is not designed for tourists who want to see the sights and visit some wineries . For out-of-town visitors, the process can be painstakingly complicated, so you're really better off booking a guided tour or renting a car and driving. Signing up for a guided tour is usually the lowest-priced way to tour Napa Valley, but you may be stuck in a crowd of 30 people or more and won't have any choices about where you go or when you stop. If you drive to Napa on your own, you may be able to see all of it in a single day or plan a longer trip.

If you are flying into San Francisco and staying in Napa Valley, your hotel may offer a shuttle from the airport. Alternatively, look into shuttle companies that service Napa Valley from San Francisco Airport (SFO) like Evans Transportation or California Wine Tours .

How to Get from San Francisco to Napa

  • Bus and Ferry: 2 hours, $19+
  • Car: 1 hour 20 minutes, 60 miles

Napa Valley is more or less due north of San Francisco, but you can't just start driving north from the middle of town and get there. In fact, if you tried that, you'd probably end up in the San Francisco Bay . To reach Napa, you need to get around the north end of the Bay. You can do that on the east or west side of the body of water, but many prefer the western route because it's more scenic, even if it does take a little longer:

  • West Side of the Bay: Go north across the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 101 to Highway 37, then connect to Highway 121 and Highway 29. This route takes you through the southern end of Sonoma County and the lush, rolling hills of the Carneros wine region . However, it also passes Sonoma Raceway. It's best to avoid it on race days when the crowds can cause traffic jams around the Highway 37/121 intersection.
  • East Side of the Bay: Take the Bay Bridge to I-80 North, exiting at American Canyon Road West, which connects to Highway 29 north.

By Bus and Ferry

The easiest way to get from San Francisco to Napa using public transportation is to take the San Francisco Bay Ferry from the San Francisco Ferry Building or Fisherman's Wharf Pier 41 to Vallejo. From Vallejo, connect to the Napa Valley VINE bus system Route 10, which can take you all the way to Calistoga .

If you want to visit some wineries along the way, stick to the ones along Highway 29 and contact the winery directly to ask where the nearest bus stop is. These services are mostly used by workday commuters and the number of trips they make per day is fewer on weekends, especially on Sundays. A one-way adult ticket on the ferry costs about $15, but there are discounts for children and senior citizens age 65 and up. Bus fare for a one-way trip to Calistoga is as low as $3.

Or course, you could also skip the ferry and travel from San Francisco to Vallejo along the BART Train or along another bus route, depending on where in the Bay Area you're coming from.

A few San Francisco tour companies offer a personalized way to get to Napa Valley from San Francisco, taking small groups on adventures planned just for them. Many companies also offer Napa Valley tours from San Francisco, some with side trips to Muir Woods or other places. Prices vary, depending on where they go and how big the tour group is.

All that personal attention means you might pay more than you would for a big group bus tour, but if you're traveling with several other people, the price difference grows smaller.

What to See in Napa Valley

There is a lot to explore in the Napa Valley with its hundreds of wineries , fantastic restaurants , and many lovely inns and resorts to choose from. A trip through wine country will take you through the valley's many quaint towns like Napa, Yountville, and Calistoga, any of which would make a lovely place to stay. If you're in the mood for a little rest and relaxation, Napa Valley is also home to many of the best spas in California and it's here where you can get an authentic Calistoga mud bath .

Besides enjoying the valley's wine, gastronomy, and hospitality, there are a number of attractions that may be interesting if you're looking for something else to do. Families traveling with kids may enjoy kid-friendly activities like Safari West, a wildlife compound, and Castello di Amorosa, a big castle with a spooky dungeon that kids will get a kick out of. To see Napa from a different perspective, try a horseback riding tour or hop aboard a hot air balloon.

While there's no way to get from San Francisco to the Napa Valley by train, you could sign up for a tour on the Napa Valley Wine Train , which will take you from Napa to Helena and back in a day and includes winery stops and meals enjoyed on-board. It's not exactly cheap and, surprisingly, wine is not included unless you opt for a special package, but it is a luxury experience and the only way to see Napa by rail.

About the Business

Sleeping Giant Winery embodies many varietals of wines from several sub-appellations sourced from vineyards of the highest caliber in both Napa and Sonoma Counties, selected because of their attention to detail, clonal choices and viticultural care. Formerly called The “Las Amigas Partners Vineyard,” Sleeping Giant Winery is located on a 12 acre parcel nestled into the heart of Carneros. One of the last true agricultural stands of Napa Valley, the Carneros region harbors a great deal of character amongst its patch work of vineyards, wineries and homes. Split across Sonoma and Napa County, the Carneros region remains the coolest AVA of the valley due to its proximity to the San Francisco Bay. The long, cool growing season is a result of the ingress of fog in the morning and evening, modulating the temperatures during the summer and fall months. This vineyard was acquired and planted in 2006 to five different clones of Pinot noir and a small amount of Chardonnay. The clonal selections of Pinot noir are integral to producing a wine of depth, texture and character. The Pinot noir clones we carefully selected are 115, Pommard, 777, 459 and Calera, with each clone contributing a distinct and integral part of the assemblage. Yields are limited to 2.5 tons per acre, allowing for the vine to produce the truest expression of the fruit without compromise. …

What a fantastic tasting experience at Sleeping Giant. Located right in the heart of the Carneros region, just as you enter Napa Valley off Cuttings Wharf Road. Their gracious, welcoming team made us feel right at home. The wines are truly extraordinary; beautifully balanced, opulent with soft finesse and just a hint of oak. Chris Dearden's expertise in cooperage is evident in his luscious wines. Tony, Amanda and Val took fabulous care of us from the moment we drove up the driveway we felt their warm hospitality. Sleeping Giant is a must see for any visitor (and local) to Napa Valley. I cannot wait to return. Cheers!

Why Now Is The Best Time To Experience Napa Valley’s Cheaper, Less Crowded Neighbor

When’s the best time to go wine tasting in California’s second-in-premier wine country after Napa Valley?

On my grand West Coast road trips, I hunkered down in this region for a few days during the late summer months, watching my friends drink as I designated drove. The endless boutique wineries housed in the quaint town make Sonoma a must-visit region in the state.

Sonoma’s climate swings from Mediterranean to coastal, making it relatively mild and year-round-friendly. But that doesn’t mean you can’t time your visit perfectly for the best weather and events. Here’s a breakdown of Sonoma’s seasons:

  • Best Season:  March to June or August to October
  • Peak Season:  July to August
  • Off-Peak Season:  January to March

Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of each season, along with insider tips on local events and the best months for vineyard views. Whether you’re dropping by for a Sonoma day trip or a longer escape through wine country, these insights will help you nail down the best time to visit Sonoma.

Best Time to Visit Sonoma

Best time of year to visit.

The absolute best time to visit Sonoma is September to October, without a doubt. This period combines the double delight of the grape harvest and autumn foliage. Plus, the weather is just perfect: warm enough to swirl your glass while strolling the outdoor vineyards without the summer crowds.

However, May and June are also amazing travel months. The mild climate means that the area’s flora and fauna are in bloom before the summer crowd descends on the region’s wine tourism.

Best Time for Good Weather

For the best weather, aim for late spring or early fall. Mild temperatures average between 60°F and 75°F, and the skies are typically clear, which is great for wandering through vineyards or road-tripping to the coast.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds

To skip out on the crowds, go to Sonoma from November through February. This chilly window, especially right after the harvest craze, means fewer tourists and no reservations at even the most prestigious wineries. Some days, you might find you have entire tasting rooms to yourself!

Cheapest Time to Visit

The cheapest time to go to Sonoma’s wine country is from January to March, during the off-peak season. Even though cheaper than nearby Napa Valley , this region is not known for being cheap, so these months are when you’ll find the best deals on accommodations, often up to 30% cheaper than the high season rates. Plus, many wineries offer discounts on tastings or behind-the-scenes tours.

Worst Time to Visit Sonoma

Frankly, the worst time to visit Sonoma is late December through February. This period brings in the cold and rainy season, making vineyard strolls less tempting and outdoor tastings pretty much a no-go. Plus, while the wineries are open, the nearby activities are not as lively, which takes away from the atmosphere.

One downside of going in the peak of summer is needing to pre-plan. Make sure you reserve a place to stay if you know you won’t be able to drive and book tastings in advance. Many tasting rooms don’t allow walk-ins and may be sold out on the day you go.

Seasons of Sonoma

Spring (march to may).

Imagine rows upon rows of vineyards slowly unfurling their leaves and budding during spring in Sonoma. March might still have that nip in the air, but the region warms up as we roll into April and May.

Temperature-wise, the range is between the high 50s and mid-70s°F. The air is fresh, the light is soft, and the crowds are trickling in, but nowhere near the summer or harvest hustle.

Key Events:

  • Artisan Cheese Festival (March):  Workshops, pairings, chef demonstrations, and more cheese than you can imagine.
  • Sonoma International Film Festival (March):  Independent films, documentaries, and shorts from around the globe take center stage.
  • Sonoma Valley Authors Festival (April):  This festival brings together writers, thinkers, and people who love to get lost in pages.
  • Earth Day OnStage (April):  This family-friendly event combines fun and education to raise awareness about environmental protection. It features live music, activities for kids, and eco-friendly exhibits.
  • Passport to Dry Creek Valley (April):  Over 45 wineries open their doors for exclusive tastings, gourmet food pairings, and vineyard tours.

Summer (June to August)

With temperatures ranging from the high 70s to occasionally peaking in the low 90s, the days are long and drenched in sunshine.

This is peak season. The wineries are in full swing, with many outdoor tastings, live music events, and vineyard dinners under the stars. Accommodations do book up quickly, and prices spike, but the energy in full summer is worth the busier scene. Early planning and weekday visits can make a significant difference in your experience.

But there’s more to summer in Sonoma than just the wine. The Russian River becomes a haven for kayaking, tubing, or a swim in the cool waters. Meanwhile, the coast, with its cliffs and beaches, is great for a scenic road trip, with temperatures often a few degrees cooler than inland.

  • Railroad Square Music Festival (June):  Santa Rosa transforms into a massive outdoor concert with local bands and food trucks galore.
  • Country Summer Music Festival (June) :  This is North Bay’s biggest country music festival, with three days of boot-stomping performances by some of the biggest names in country music.
  • Healdsburg Jazz Festival (June) :  It’s a week-long affair that celebrates jazz in all forms, from big names to local talents.
  • Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic (July):  The summer skies over the Sonoma County Fairgrounds are painted in a riot of colors during this two-day ballooning event.
  • Gravenstein Apple Fair (August) :  This fair celebrates the local Gravenstein apple with pie-baking (and eating) contests, live music, crafts, and more.
  • Art in the Redwoods Festival (August) :  Among towering redwoods, this festival celebrates artistic creativity and nature.

Fall (September to November)

Fall in Sonoma is famously known as “crush.” Grapes are picked at their peak, wine presses are heard, and the air is filled with the sweet scent of fermenting juice.

Farmers’ markets are overflowing with the bounty of the season, like squashes, pumpkins, apples, and more. There are lots of farm-to-table experiences at this time.

The weather cools to a comfortable 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, perfect for hiking and biking among the vineyards.

And then, there’s the drop in tourism post-summer. This translates to more relaxed wine tastings, easier booking at top-tier restaurants, and generally quieter, more intimate experiences.

  • Sonoma County Harvest Fair (October):  This event is a toast to the grape harvest with wine tastings, grape stomps, and some seriously gourmet food.
  • Healdsburg Crush (October):  Keep the wine celebrations going with this charming event in Healdsburg. It’s a day filled with outstanding local wines and delicious bites.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Sonoma might bring cooler temperatures, but It’s just right for cozying up in one of the many charming inns or tasting rooms with a glass of full-bodied red.

The crowds dwindle, so you’ll have much more peaceful wine tastings and unhurried conversations with winemakers.

Rain showers the region in winter, and coupled with the post-harvest pickings, it’s not the most beautiful time to wander through the vineyards. The town of Sonoma lights up with holiday festivities, twinkling town squares, Christmas markets, and special holiday wine tours.

Beyond the wine, the season’s also a boon for mushroom foragers, particularly in the damp forests of the coast, where varieties like chanterelles thrive.

  • Annual Lighting of the Snowmen (December) :  This festive event lights up the night with creatively decorated snowmen displays.
  • Winter Wineland (January):  Kick off the new year with a splash of wine at over 60 wineries across Sonoma County.
  • Sonoma County Restaurant Week (February):  Top-notch restaurants offer prix-fixe menus that allow you to taste the best local cuisine without the hefty price tag.
  • Sonoma Olive Festival (February) :  From olive oil tastings to orchard tours, the Sonoma Olive Festival is a unique celebration of the region’s rich olive heritage.
