Star Trek: The Next Generation — Why Denise Crosby's Tasha Yar Left After Season 1

Star Trek: The Next Generation featured Denise Crosby's Tasha Yar as one of its core characters, but the actress left the series after Season 1.

Quick Links

The history of tasha yar on star trek, why denise crosby left the role of tasha yar.

  • Lt. Natasha Yar's death in Star Trek: The Next Generation was a surprise and a sign of the show's struggles in its first season.
  • Denise Crosby left the show because she felt her character had limited room to grow.
  • Yar's death brought depth and nuance to the series and left a lasting impression on her crewmates.

When Star Trek: The Next Generation began airing on first-run syndication in 1987, it was a rarity for the franchise to permanently kill off any leading characters. So it came as a huge surprise when Lt. Natasha Yar met her untimely death in Season 1, Episode 23, "Skin of Evil," in which the USS Enterprise-D attempted to rescue Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) from a crashed shuttlecraft held hostage by an evil entity called Armus. In a demonstration of his power, Armus killed Yar while she was investigating the crash site. Yar's death weighed heavily on the crew, who gathered shortly afterward and held a memorial service for the fallen Chief of Security in the ship's holodeck. Lt. Worf stepped up to become the Enterprise's Security Chief, a position he held for the remainder of the series' run.

The arbitrary nature of the character's passing came as a shock to fans and remains perhaps the biggest sign of the way The Next Generation struggled during its inaugural season. It also raises the question of why actress Denise Crosby left after the first of many TNG seasons and why her eventual return was strictly limited. After all, Gates McFadden left the series after Season 1 as well, only to return in Season 3 and become a key protagonist in the series' now-classic later seasons. McFadden's character, Dr. Beverly Crusher, wasn't killed the way Yar was. Simply put, Crosby left because she didn't feel the character had sufficient room to grow, though the details are a little more nuanced than that.

Updated by Robert Vaux on December 30, 2023: The article has been expanded with more details about Crosby's post- Star Trek career, as well as the impact her departure had on the in-universe narrative of Star Trek: The Next Generation . In addition, it has been reformatted to fit with current CBR guidelines.

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart Recalls Lashing Out at Next Generation Co-Stars

Tasha Yar served on the USS Enterprise-D as Chief of Security. She had a traumatic childhood growing up in the crime-ridden Federation colony on the planet Turkana IV, and when her parents died, she was forced to care for herself and her younger sister, Ishara. Eventually, she escaped the colony and enrolled in Starfleet, majoring in Security and impressing Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart), who recruited her to serve on the Enterprise. She took pride in her job, but she was also impatient, impulsive, and unafraid of throwing herself right into danger, especially if it meant protecting her fellow crew. While this sometimes led her to step out of line, she tried to learn from her mistakes. Yar was well respected by the crew, particularly Worf (Michael Dorn) , who admired her courage and warrior-like mentality. His status as her successor can be viewed as an effort to honor her legacy.

Yar's death in "Skin of Evil" came at the end of a very difficult inaugural season, marred by poor scripts and an overall lack of purpose. Things improved dramatically in the second season, and The Next Generation hit its stride in Season 3, going on to become one of the best and most beloved entries in the entire franchise. That makes Crosby's departure stand out all the more, as well as helping explain why the actor may have felt dissatisfied with the work. At the time, the show simply didn't look very promising, and while that eventually changed, she had no way of knowing that when she left. Yar's death became a reflection of Season 1's difficulties — a potentially strong character stuck in neutral while the series looked for a stronger sense of purpose.

The Star Wars Franchise Is In Its 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' Era

Crosby claimed that she left the series because she was unhappy with the role, even though she loved the character of Tasha Yar. " I wanted to leave the show ," she explained in an interview with StarTrek.com . " Although it was Gene's idea to have the character die. He thought it would be so shocking. I was struggling with not being able to do much with the character. I had all these ideas and couldn't do them. I was just stage dressing. I chose to leave instead of just being satisfied with that ." The actor continued to work steadily for decades after her departure from the series, largely in genre television whose audiences would likely know her best as Tasha. That included one-shot appearances in the likes of T he X-Files , The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. , Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman , Dexter , Castle , and Creepshow . She earned praise for a three-episode stint straddling Seasons 4 and 5 of The Walking Dead as the leader of a human community that had turned to cannibalism, as well as an extended appearance on the hit series Ray Donovan in the mid-2010s. Her most prominent role on the big screen was probably Rachel Creed, the female lead in the original adaptation of Stephen King's Pet Sematary , which she made shortly after her departure from The Next Generation . The film has aged well and remains one of the more underrated versions of the horror author's work.

While Crosby never regretted her decision to leave the show, she'd return to the Star Trek universe to play an alternate version of her character in Season 3's "Yesterday's Enterprise." She also played Yar's half-Romulan daughter, Sela , who'd appear throughout the series to cause trouble for Picard and the crew — most notably in aiding the House of Duras in their attempts to plunge the Klingon Empire into a civil war. There would later be an indirect reference to Tasha Yar in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. She made a final appearance in the role during a flashback sequence in the series finale, Season 7, Episode 25-26, "All Good Things..." They helped punctuate her earlier concerns about the character's direction, as well as showing the kind of potential in Yar that was largely going to waste. Yet, ultimately, her reasons for leaving were probably the right ones. The Next Generation had a bumper crop of strong characters, all competing for attention amid a very crowded schedule. And with her successor, Worf, acting as a gateway to the Klingons, one of Star Trek 's most important species saw proper development with the screen time he was given. Had Crosby remained, her character would have likely developed into a more interesting figure the same way the other protagonists did, and yet that would have come at an untold cost to some of the series' other groundbreaking developments.

As it stands, Yar becomes a haunting figure for her surviving crewmates, reminding them of the dangers they face as members of Starfleet and adding depth to such moments as Data's loss of virginity at her hands and Picard's startled response to her in "All Good Things..." The character's death brought depth and nuance to the series in ways that wouldn't have happened had she remained aboard. She was noticeably absent during Season 3 of Picard , which served as a reunion for the rest of the Next Generation crew. While it would have been difficult to restore Yar to life — especially for such an arbitrary reason — it still felt like they were one crew member down, very much as it did during the series itself. It's a testament to Crosby's talent and presence in the role that she could leave such an impression behind.

Biology [ ]

Aenar resembled Andorians. Their eyes and skin were white. In the 2150s , at least some Aenar had a smooth, bulbous forehead. They had white hair. ( ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

In the 2250s , Hemmer 's forehead resembled that of other Andorians of this decade . Hemmer considered his telepathic senses to be superior to humanoid sight. ( SNW episode : " Strange New Worlds ")

Aenar blood was blue. ( SNW episode : " Memento Mori ")

Andorian-Aenar hybrids do not inherit their Aenar parents' telepathic abilities. ( TOS novel : The Higher Frontier )

History [ ]

The Aenar were long considered a myth by the Andorians until they were discovered in 2104 after which official diplomatic relations were maintained by both governments. They remained pacifistic and reclusive, and never participated in the defense of Andoria . By the 2150s , the Andorian Guard commander Thy'lek Shran knew only a handful of Andorians who had seen an Aenar. ( ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

In 2153 , Gareb was abducted and taken into Romulan space. ( ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

In November 2154 , the Aenar were dragged into interstellar politics when Admiral Valdore i'Kaleh tr'Irrhaimehn and his scientist Nijil manipulated Gareb and used to remote control a telepresence drone ship . ( ENT episode : " United ")

The Romulan Star Empire sought to destabilise the local region by sowing conflict, telling Gareb that all Aenar had been wiped out, and providing him with an avenue for revenge. Commander Shran and the Human Captain Jonathan Archer traveled to the Aenar compound beneath the Northern Wastes to find out which Aenar colluded with the Romulans. Thirijhamel zh'Dhaven (Jhamel) agreed to join the Allies to help recover her brother Gareb. Unfortunately, Gareb could not be saved from Romulan captivity. However, he was instrumental in destroying the two telepresence drone ships after his sister Jhamel had made contact with him. ( ENT episode : " The Aenar ")

Jhamel and Shran

Jhamel and her Andorian lover in 2154 .

In 2155 , Orion slavers abducted more Aenar. One of Jhamel's betrothed joined Shran, and lost his life when the hostages were saved. Jhamel, one of the rescued, and Shran entered the shelthreth with two other Aenar. ( ENT novel : The Good That Men Do )

Talla

Aenar-Andorian hybrid Anishtalla zh'Dhaven in 2161 .

Anishtalla zh'Dhaven (Talla) , daughter of the Aenar Jhamel and the Andorian Shran, was one of the few Aenar-Andorian hybrids . In the 23rd century , Thelin th'Valrass was one of the last. The Eveste Elders , under pressure due to the Andorian reproductive crisis , would not allow further interracial bondings. ( ENT episode : " These Are the Voyages... ", ST - Myriad Universes novel : The Chimes at Midnight )

The Aenar Hemmer held the rank of commander and served as chief engineer under Captain Christopher Pike aboard the Constitution -class starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in 2259 . ( SNW episode : " Strange New Worlds ")

The efforts to end the Andorian ice age destabilised several Aenar cities, leading to a deterioration in the relationship between the two subspecies in the 23rd century. In the 2270s , the Andorian Science Institute was working on continuing the climate change without affecting the Aenar settlements further, but the Aenar did not trust those efforts. ( ST - Myriad Universes novel : The Chimes at Midnight )

In 2278 a group of unknown attackers massacred the last remaining Aenar city on Andoria, leaving only a few dozen Aenar alive. It was discovered that the Aenar were not a naturally telepathic race at all. Each Aenar was bonded with a Spectre , a non-corporeal entity from another dimension that provided its host with telepathic and sometimes telekinetic abilities. These Spectres were dissidents from their home dimension and were being hunted by the Spectre Lords for the crime of making contact with corporeal beings. The attackers were acting on the Lords' behalf. Eventually the surviving Aenar and the telepathic New Humans migrate to a subspace domain where they and their Spectres can be safe from the Lords' attacks, leaving the Aenar effectively extinct in the Federation's universe. ( TOS novel : The Higher Frontier )

Thelin movie era

Aenar-Andorian hybrid Thelin th'Valrass around 2285 .

The species had long been thought to have become extinct as of the late 23rd century. After the Borg Invasion of 2381 , the remains of a very large Aenar city was located by Andorian scientists. By 2387 , however, the Aenar population was known to number 4.1 million. ( ST - Typhon Pact novel : Paths of Disharmony , ST reference : Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library )

Despite their reclusive and pacifistic nature, numerous Aenar had joined Starfleet as officers , like Lieutenant Marrien of Starbase 39-Sierra , by 2409 . ( STO - Romulan Struggle mission : " Heading Out ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

In a permutation of the mirror universe where James O'Brien transformed the Terran Rebellion into a resurgent Terran Empire , numerous Aenar served in Imperial Starfleet , outnumbering the Andorians. In 2409 , male Aenar were commonly fully or partially shaved and sported a beard. They were first encountered by Starfleet during an attempted invasion of the primary universe . ( STO mission : " Crack in the Mirror ")

In a timeline where Spock died as a child , Thelin th'Valrass lived to serve on the USS Enterprise . From 2270 to 2274 , he was part of the Andorian Science Institute 's effort to end the Andorian ice age, and concerned with protecting the Aenar from its effects. He ended his participation of the project when the Eveste Elders denied him to join either an Andorian or a mixed shelthreth . Admiral Thelin rose to become a military hero and war criminal in the Genesis War between the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the 2280s and 2290s . ( ST - Myriad Universes - Echoes and Refractions novel : The Chimes at Midnight )

  • Meet Hy'Rell, the Efrosian librarian in Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 8, "Labyrinths".
  • The Breen are after ancient power to create life, putting Discovery in danger.
  • Efrosians were last seen in the movies Star Trek IV and Star Trek VI.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths" introduces Hy'Rell (Elena Juatco), who hails from an alien species last seen in the movies Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country . Written by Lauren Wilkinson and Eric J. Robbins and directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, "Labyrinths" brings Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery to the Eternal Gallery and Archive for the final clue to the Progenitors' treasure . However, the Breen, guided by Moll (Eve Harlow), are hot on Discovery's trail and want the ancient power to create life.

On X, Jörg Hillebrand (@gaghyogi49), who was a renowned researcher for Star Trek: Picard season 3, posted about Hy'Rell in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths", identifying the alien librarian and guide as an Efrosian . Hy'Rell has the same ridges on her brows and hairstyle as previous Efrosians seen in Star Trek IV and Star Trek VI . Check out Hillebrand's post below:

As verified by Memory Alpha , an Efrosian helmsman played by Nick Ramus appeared on the USS Saratoga in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Kurtwood Smith played the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

As Burnham seeks the universe's greatest treasure in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, she'll need help from a host of new and returning characters.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Brought Back Many Classic Aliens

Discovery has more callbacks to star trek lore.

The Efrosian Hy'Rell joins an exciting list of classic Star Trek aliens appearing in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Two of Star Trek: Discovery season 5's new major characters hail from species known from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is a Kellerun while L'ak (Elias Toufexis) is Breen who made history as the first of his species to remove his helmet and have a three-dimensional character. Other DS9 species seen in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 include the Ferengi bartender and his Lurian barfly in the USS Discovery's bar.

Star Trek: Discovery's 32nd century feels more like Star Trek than ever before.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is a sequel to Star Trek: The Next Generation 's "The Chase", which introduced the ancient humanoids who seeded the galaxy with life. In Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, the ancient humanoids are called the Progenitors, and the scientists who found the Progenitors' treasure include a Trill, a Romulan, a Betazoid, and a Denobulan. Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere also introduced Fred (J. Adam Brown), a Soong-type android similar to Data (Brent Spiner). With the new addition of an Efrosian, Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century feels more like Star Trek than ever before.

Star Trek: Discovery's Commander Rayner Tragedy Echoes Strange New Worlds' La'an

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 7 - "Erigah"

  • Commander Rayner and La'an share tragic pasts, becoming valuable assets for Starfleet.
  • Both survivors use their experiences to help fight against Breen and Gorn threats.
  • Mentors play a crucial role in helping them heal and grow beyond their traumatic pasts.

Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), the new Kellerun First Officer on Star Trek: Discovery , finally opens up about his tragic past in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7 , "Erigah", and it draws surprising parallels to the history of USS Enterprise Security Officer Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . Commander Rayner's practical perspective stands in contrast to Captain Michael Burnham's (Sonequa Martin-Green) steadfast idealism, making Burnham and Rayner one of the best Captain and First Officer pairs in Star Trek: Discovery and its ever-changing command lineup. Rayner was quiet about personal details, however, until Discovery 's plot demanded it.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spun off from Star Trek: Discovery season 2, following the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the USS Enterprise crew, and included both familiar characters like Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and brand-new characters with familiar names, like Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh . La'an is, in fact, a descendant of the infamous Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban), but La'an's connection to Star Trek 's infamous dictator is just one thing that influences Lt. Noonien-Singh's character. La'an's personal history is both more compelling and more tragic than being related to Khan, with details doled out carefully throughout Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' first 2 seasons.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5's Callum Keith Rennie On Captain Rayner Challenging Burnham's Authority

Screen Rant interviews Callum Keith Rennie about how his new character, Captain Rayner, fits into Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Commander Rayner's Breen Backstory Matches La'an Noonien-Singh Surviving The Gorn

Rayner and la'an provide valuable intel for starfleet's survival.

Star Trek: Discovery 's Commander Rayner and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh are both their families' sole survivors of devastation wracked by enemies Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets know almost nothing about. While Federation representatives weigh options for handling the imminent Breen threat in Discovery season 5, episode 7, "Erigah", Commander Rayner tells Captain Michael Burnham that the Breen gutted the Kellerun homeworld to use as an outpost, killing Rayner's entire family in the process. Similarly, La'an reveals to Captain Pike that the Gorn used the entire complement of the SS Puget Sound as either food or breeding sacks, with La'an alone surviving as a warning from the Gorn.

La'an was captured by the Gorn again in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' season 2 finale, "Hegemony."

The Federation has an advantage in facing these violent and otherwise mysterious alien species because Rayner and La'an know how the Breen and the Gorn, respectively, operate, despite being traumatized by the horrors they experienced. Rayner knows well that Kellerun was devastated under the leadership of Breen Primarch Tahal, and even provides specific details to legitimize the Federation's bluff to stall the Breen forces demanding L'ak (Elias Toufexis). La'an's expertise helps the Enterprise survive a Gorn encounter in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 4, "Memento Mori", and shapes the plan to rescue Gorn attack survivors in Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 9, "All Those Who Wander".

The Kellerun didn't have it easy in their first appearance, either. In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 13, "Armageddon Game", the Kellerun home world was already ravaged by Harvesters, biological weapons used in the war against the T'Lani.

How Traumatic Backstories Shaped Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery and La'an in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Starfleet mentors help la'an and rayner overcome their tragic pasts.

Commander Rayner in Star Trek: Discovery and Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds were severely impacted by the trauma they experienced as survivors of deadly alien massacres, and that pain manifests in very similar ways for both of them. Rayner and La'an appear standoffish and brusque, building intentional emotional walls between themselves and anyone who might want to get close to them. Both have a strong respect for rules and regulations, because rules keep people safe, and also trust in their own judgment over anyone else's, regardless of whether Breen or Gorn are involved or not, thanks to their own heightened sensitivity to danger.

Fortunately, both La'an Noonien-Singh and Rayner have Starfleet mentors who take a personal interest in helping them heal the damage from their pasts . Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) sees a mirror of her own difficult past in La'an's struggles to relate to the world. Michael Burnham went from Starfleet's first mutineer to Discovery's captain thanks to second chances, so Burnham extends the dismissed Captain Rayner an offer to be Discovery's First Officer. Through the support of others and new chances to help, both Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' La'an Noonien-Singh and Star Trek: Discovery 's Rayner have opportunities to grow beyond their traumatic pasts and truly thrive instead of just surviving.

History [ ]

In the first century of the 1st millennium BC , Kaminar was sparsely populated. The planet's population was divided into three groups: the Ba'ul, the pre- vahar'ai Kelpiens, and the post- vahar'ai Kelpiens. The post- vahar'ai Kelpiens were the main predatory species on the planet, preying on the Ba'ul. Within eighty years, the pre- vahar'ai Kelpiens had either evolved into being post- vahar'ai Kelpiens or had died out. Starting in the first century AD, the Ba'ul were being driven to near extinction by the post- vahar'ai Kelpiens. Then, there was a shift, wherein the Ba'ul population rebounded, with the post- vahar'ai Kelpiens dying out.

At some point, there was a resurrection of the pre- vahar'ai Kelpiens. This reborn species had the potential of becoming post- vahar'ai Kelpiens. Their numbers started to increase, yet they were always smaller in number than the Ba'ul. These events were recorded by the alien lifeform known to the Federation as the Sphere . Data from these recordings was later used in the creation of the Kaminar population history by the USS Discovery crew in 2257 . ( DIS : " The Sound of Thunder ")

At some point between the 23rd century and the events of " The Burn ", Kaminar joined the Federation. As of the late 32nd century , Kaminar was too far out of range to be considered an active member of the reduced United Federation of Planets , but was reportedly unharmed and `status quo` ( DIS : " Die Trying ")

By the 23rd century , the Ba'ul were a technologically advanced species who required the pre-warp Kelpiens to ritualistically sacrifice themselves to their ships . ( DIS : " The Vulcan Hello "; ST : " The Brightest Star ")

Sometime before the 32nd century , the Ba'ul and the Kelpiens would put aside their differences and Kaminar would become a member world of the Federation. ( DIS : " Die Trying ")

In 3189 , the Emerald Chain engaged in military exercises near Kaminar, prompting Fleet Admiral Charles Vance to dispatch part of the Federation fleet to protect the planet. Vance speculated that Osyraa was threatening Kaminar in a ploy to draw out the USS Discovery . ( DIS : " Su'Kal ")

After the discovery of Theta Zeta , the Federation delivered dilithium to this planet as a gift . In 3190 , the Kaminar High Council had a debate on what to do with this gift, help their citizens or use it to return to the stars . ( DIS : " Kobayashi Maru ")

In 3190 , the people of Kaminar voted to resume space travel. Saru's village was involved in retrofitting the planet's spaceport . ( DIS : " Choose to Live ")

Background information [ ].

Scenes on the planet for " The Brightest Star " and " The Sound of Thunder " were filmed at Scarborough Bluffs in Toronto. [1]

Apocrypha [ ]

The Gallery DIS novel Desperate Hours calls Saru's homeworld "Kelpia". This was later contradicted by another Discovery novel entitled Fear Itself , which first established the planet's name as Kaminar months before the release of "The Brightest Star".
