What Are the Reasons Why Your Dodge Journey Won’t Start?

The reasons your Dodge Journey won’t start are a damaged car battery, a failing alternator, a defective starter, a corroded battery, and a clogged gasoline filter. Other possible causes include a faulty pump, a blown fuse, rodent damage, and bad spark plugs.

– Damaged Car Battery

Your car won’t start if you have a damaged or dead battery. If you have a dead battery, you won’t hear any sounds when you use the key normally inside the ignition. In most cases, weather-related issues drain a car battery. If the car battery is affected by extreme heat or cold, it can destroy or kill the battery and prevent your vehicle from starting.

Once you suspect the battery may be damaged or dead, you should confirm by testing the battery. Use a multimeter or hydrometer to check the DC voltage of the battery. If the reading is less than 1 volt for a 9-volt battery, it means the battery is dead.

– Failing Alternator

If you have inspected the battery and discovered that it isn’t the source of the problem, the next component to check is the alternator. The alternator is an integral component of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine that charges the battery while the engine runs. The alternator converts chemical energy to electrical energy for charging and replenishing the vehicle’s battery and other electrical components.

Thus, if the alternator stops working, the battery will eventually die. You can test if your vehicle’s alternator works using a multimeter to measure the battery’s voltage while the engine runs. If the multimeter gives a low voltage, the alternator is not working correctly.

– Defective Starter

Another reason why your car will refuse to start is if the starter is defective. The starter is the component that turns the engine over when you use the ignition. Although the average lifespan of a starter motor is between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, it can break down if the vehicle has been used for a long time.

You can test if your starter is in good condition by using a multimeter to measure the voltage of the starter with the key in the start position. If the multimeter reads a low voltage, the starter is failing and should be fixed soon. Also, you can detect a bad starter if the key makes a clicking sound when you turn it to start the engine.

– Blocked Fuel Filter

The gasoline filter is the vehicle component that prevents dirt and rust particles from mixing with the fuel so they don’t damage the engine. Although the filter doesn’t wear out like other mechanical parts, it can become clogged by dirt, dust, or airborne particles. When these materials block the filter, its permeability will drastically reduce. Thus, the fuel pressure will reduce as well.

While the engine can still work if the gasoline filter is clogged, there is a stage where the filter gets too dirty and the engine won’t function correctly. A dirty filter often causes ignition difficulty because it depletes the fuel supply going into the engine. In some cases, the blocked gasoline filter will cause the engine not to start when the key is turned in the ignition.

– Defective Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of your Dodge vehicle is responsible for conveying the right amount of fuel to the engine at a certain pressure. So, if the pump fails, the engine will not start. One of the common causes of pump failure is wear and contamination. Also, if a power contact is broken or the pump lever is damaged, the pump will malfunction.

However, before the pump stops working, it will give you signs. Symptoms like the engine breaking down regularly, the car experiencing difficulty starting, and the engine jerking indicate that you have a failing pump, which you should fix immediately.

– Corroded Battery

If there is corrosion on your battery’s contacts, it can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow, affecting the engine’s operation. The engine will no longer start properly when a battery has become corroded. Corrosion on the battery can prevent the engine from starting when the key is turned in the ignition.

To test if a corroded battery is causing the vehicle’s starting problems, you should investigate the battery’s contacts. Next, raise the rubber covers on the battery terminals and check for signs of corrosion. If you see white or silvery-green deposits on the terminals, that strongly indicates corrosion.

– Defective Remote Car Starter Battery

If your Dodge Journey uses a push start/stop button to turn on the ignition and is not starting, the problem may be due to a weak key fob battery. A weak battery renders the key fob inoperative and cannot start the vehicle. More so, if the battery is weak, the door will stop opening or closing at the push of a button.

Nevertheless, you can still start the vehicle because the battery only transmits the signal for locking and unlocking. The car must be started manually using the key, and the same applies to the doors.

– Damaged Fuse

Sometimes, a damaged fuse could be why your Dodge Durango is not starting when you turn the key. If one or more fuse inside the box is blown, the engine will not start. This is because fuses limit the electrical current flowing through wires to protect specific components. In other words, the fuse box protects the electronics within the vehicle.

If the fuse has a problem, it could affect the ignition relay, which is located inside the fuse box. The ignition relay transfers electricity from the battery to the ignition components so that you can start the car quickly, so it would help if you inspected all the fuses inside the fuse box for signs of damage.

– Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs provide the spark of electricity that ignites the combustion needed to start the vehicle. If the spark plugs are inoperative or damaged , the car will not start. Typically, the spark plugs are not affected by a defect. Instead, the problem lies with the plug connections on the ignition system.

If any plug connections come loose, the vehicle will not start, and the only remedy is to tighten it. Defective or failed spark plugs will prevent the car from starting, so they should be fixed.

How To Fix Your Dodge Journey’s Starting Problem?

You can fix your Dodge Journey’s starting problem by changing the alternator, installing a new battery, cleaning corrosion from the battery, and changing the starter. Other remedies to the problem are cleaning the gasoline filter, replacing the filter, and installing new spark plugs.

– Change the Alternator

To fix a defective alternator, discard it and replace it with a new one. First, disconnect the battery and loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place to replace the failing alternator. Take out the old alternator and install the new unit in its place. Then reconnect the battery and start the ignition to check if the alternator works correctly.

– Install a New Battery

If your car battery is dead, jumpstarting won’t work. Your only option is replacing it with a new battery. You can carry out the replacement yourself by using a socket wrench set and screwdriver. First, locate the battery under your vehicle’s hood to perform this operation.

After that, disconnect the negative and positive cables from the battery’s terminals. While doing this, ensure both terminals don’t touch each other because it will cause an electrical spark. Next, gently remove the old battery then install the new unit by connecting the cables to the battery. Test the battery by starting the engine.

– Remove Corrosion From the Battery

To fix a corroded battery, you will have to remove the corrosion from the battery. This will require you to remove the poles from the battery. The first step is to unplug the black cable from the negative pole and remove the red positive pole cable. After removing the battery, you can start cleaning the terminals.

As a precaution, when using metal pliers to remove a cable from the pole clamp, ensure you don’t touch any other vehicle parts. Once you clean the terminals, reconnect the battery and test it.

– Install New Spark Plugs

You’ll need to replace bad spark plugs with new ones for the engine to start. To replace the spark plug, first remove the plug wire and the coil-on-plug (COP) attached to the spark plug end. Next, unscrew the plug with a spark plug socket. Put the new spark plug in place and reconnect the plug wires and COP. Start the engine to test the spark plug.

– Change the Starter Motor

If the starter is the reason why your vehicle is not starting, then you should replace it with a new one. You will need a socket set and ratchet to remove the starter from the car. The first step is disconnecting the negative battery cable so you won’t experience any electrical shock while working on the starter. Then locate the starter, usually near the front of the engine on the passenger side.

After locating the starter, use the socket to loosen the two bolts holding it. Then carefully pull out the old starter from the engine and install the new starter in its place. Retighten the bolts to secure the starter and reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the new starter by turning the key in the ignition.

– Fix the Gasoline Filter

You can fix a dirty gasoline filter by cleaning it. To clean the filter, you must first locate it because the location varies for different vehicles. Also, ensure no fuel is exposed to the spray by using a clamp on the hose. Place a container under the filter to catch all the remaining fuel.

Insert a hose inside the detached filter and spray it with a special liquid so everything inside flows out. After spraying, dry the filter for about an hour, then install it back into position. However, cleaning is no longer possible if the filter is fully clogged. You will have to replace it.

Frequently Asked Question

– can a dodge journey be manually started.

Yes, a Dodge Journey can be manually started if the fob is dead. Turn the fob over to reveal a latch at the top back of the fob. Slide the latch to the side to remove the key and use the key you removed to unlock the door.

Can a Powertrain Malfunction Cause My Dodge Journey to Not Start?

A powertrain malfunction can indeed prevent your Dodge Journey from starting. Whether it’s due to a faulty transmission, engine, or other powertrain component, fixing powertrain malfunctions is crucial to restore functionality. Hi. I have a 2014 2.4L Journey that won’t start randomly.

I have running with an issue with the fuel level sensor, it’s broken and I have the code for that  issue on the scanner but it was working just fine despite marking empty fuel all the time.

However a couple of days ago I went to work and back home normally, but in the evening it did not start, next day did not start at all, yesterday it start normally like 10 times that I try. Today I came to work but now it doesn’t start anymore again, there’s a click sound but other than that nothing.

My battery voltage is 12.7, and my fuses are ok. We tried jump starting but it didn’t work either.

When the car starts it work just flawless, no sounds or jumps or anything. Can it be related to the fuel level sensor?. The scanner shows no other code apart from the fuel sensor being high.

Welcome to the site. How many miles/kilometres on vehicle. Click with no start and proper battery volatage (12.7) would usually be a starter issue. Jump starting with cables shows it’s probably not your battery.

Could try to confirm with a multi meter. When key is turned all the way to engage starter, the small wire at the starter should have battery voltage signal that is sent by the key switch.  Could even confirm that with 12 volt test light.  The click sound probably means the starter is getting this signal and solenoid on starter is worn.  If light tap on starter with mallet makes it work a few more times,  another sign it’s bad contacts inside solenoid on starter.  So new or rebuilt starter assembly needed.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply.

My Journey is close to 85k kilometers.  We think that is not baterry because all the electric things works just fine, head lights, radio, horn, dash cam and we also try to jump start it with cables and didn’t work. Also checking with both scanner and multimeter shows on stand by around 12.7 and with engine running (when it starts ?) around 12.3-12.4.

The test on the key I cannot do it because the start is with button and the wireless key fob, so I press the brake and the button and starts. In this case I press it and just hear a click (when the door is open, otherwise its not that loud to hear it from inside the cockpit) and the engine don’t turn on, and the check engine light flashes a couple times on the dashboard. It’s like when I press the run button but without pressing the brakes plus the check engine flashing.

I scanned it when it did this but my scanner only shows, as I mentioned before the Fuel Level sensor issue.

I tried to start it again a few minutes ago, first with no luck, but after a couple of tries it started just fine, so I am confused.

There are a few safety switches that need to work for car to turn over and engine to actually run.

Next no start (turn over) try putting car in neutral and see if it starts. Transmission range selector switch when in park or neutral provides a ground for the starter relay to engage.

A bad starter solenoid can be intermittent. Sometimes working and other times not. Worn internal  contacts  and springs.  The starter relay under hood can be manually jumpered with a piece of wire across the two contacts 85 and 87 on the fuse box base when relay plugs in. If it still clicks then it is clearly a starter issue. This test bypasses all safety switchs and the push button start.

I am confident the fuel level switch and code are not preventing the engine from turning over.

A 12 volt test light on the starter motor small wire plug, would show if push button is always sending a signal when pushed.

Deadf spot in your starter..  had this issue on my 78 Chevy Nova!!  was a dead spot in the starter..  new starter fixed that

If the battery is over 3 yrs old get it tested ,,,,, have it load tested to see if it is in good shape....no matter what you think if it is good or not get it tested as that is the easiest to check and cheapest usually free at most part stores,,,also it will involve some time and labor but if it checks out good then remove the cables and clean and tighten them before doing anything else.... 95 % of non start problems are from weak batteries that will run the radio show the lights work and the horn can work but not start the car..also checking all grounds on the frame and starter for corroded or semi loose connections will create on and off starting problems..LIKe i said simple and free things to do before going after expensive fixes by guessing

  • 3 months later...

good evening, I as will is having same issues like markfs33 is having on the exact same 2014 dodge journey 2.4L  86,000miles on it.   took mine to AutoZone to get battery check out at first an they told me it had a bad battery so I purchased a new one, but it still does the same randomly start no crank issue but all interior lights on.     I've check my relay fuses n placed my fingers to hear n feel the clicks on them but it just won't engage like when we first bought it.  after a couple of tries it starts.

CPS crank sensor can do random no start , sometimes without storing a code.

would it be possible to test starter  an how ?

what bout the push start button?

or the cps ?

Starting point is always codes. Starter can be bench tested and tec can also  jumper starter relay base connections to by pass all security stuff like transmission range selector, key security and even push button.  If lightly tapping starter with rubber mallet makes it work, contacts/springs in solenoid bad, new or rebuilt starter needed.

Find a shop that diagnoses and doesn’t just guess at things.

CPS very tricky to test, maybe with an oscilloscope. Electronic lab equip that mechanics don’t have. Scanner often will show a CPS code, but not always. $30 part for oem.   It,s can becconsidered a wear item after 100k or so, on some cars.  Heat and vibration eventually affects part.

A loose starter can be tested on the ground with a battery and jumper cables and a screw driver.

Power connections arced out with screw driver to engage solenoid and motor.

Dodge Journey: Clicking Noise But Won’t Start – How to Fix Fast

2014 dodge journey will not start

Does your Dodge Journey have lights that come on and a clicking noise when you turn the key, but it won’t start? This article is meant to help you diagnose this exact scenario.

The good news is that this is a fairly common no-start situation and is usually pretty easy to repair.  A weak battery is the most common cause of no start and a clicking sound.

Quick Diagnosis Chart

Dodge Journey Clicking Won't Start

Here we’ve listed a few things that can help you narrow down why your Journey clicks but doesn’t start.

Did the Battery Light Come on While Driving?

Battery Light on Clicking Won't start Dodge Journey

An alternator that hasn’t charged the battery enough to provide sufficient voltage for the next start can cause your vehicle to click but not start, even if the lights are still on.

The battery or alternator light coming on while driving is good anecdotal evidence that the alternator has gone bad. It’ll usually come on when your Dodge Journey’s charging system voltage drops below 13.5 volts .

If your Journey’s battery or alternator light came on while driving the last time it ran, and now it won’t start, that’s a strong indication that your vehicle’s alternator couldn’t charge the battery enough.

You can test it with a multimeter (see below).

Is it Clicking or Clunking?

2014 dodge journey will not start

If you hear a single clunk when you turn the key, it can still be the battery, but it’s more likely a starter.  A series of rapid clicks is usually battery related.

Try this First

Turn everything off that requires electricity in your Journey.  Every electrical system draws amperage from the battery.  If it’s just a little too low on juice to crank the starter, you might be able to turn your vehicle over by temporarily disabling the following:

  • Automatic headlights
  • Climate control
  • Dome light (just make sure the door is closed)

No Start But Lights Come On/Clicking Causes

A weak battery is the most common cause of a no-start and clicking condition in the Dodge Journey.  We’ve listed the causes and things you can check in an order you can check in a parking lot if you’re stranded.

1. Loose or Corroded Battery Posts/Terminals (Likely)

The first thing you should do is check the battery cables at the terminals.  The terminals are what connect the battery to your vehicle’s starter and wiring harness.

Loose Battery Terminal

Clicking While Starting

Tools needed: Wrench

If your battery terminals aren’t corroded, grab them one at a time and see if they wiggle.  They shouldn’t move at all.  If they wiggle, they’ll need to be tightened.

If you’re stranded without a wrench, push down and twist the loose terminal.  Now, try starting your Journey.  Repeat this process a few times until you can get it to bite and start.  Once you get home, tighten the terminal properly.

Corroded Battery Terminal/Posts

2014 dodge journey will not start

Tools needed: Wire brush, Wrench, Gloves

CAUTION: Battery acid can burn the eyes and skin, proceed at your own risk

If your Journey’s battery posts are corroded, you’ll need to clean them off enough to get back on the road.

How to Clean a Battery Terminal

  • You’ll need a wrench to loosen the terminal(s).  Always start by taking off your vehicle’s negative terminal first .  Make sure not to touch your wrench to both terminals at one time (you’ll get zapped).  Don’t let the wrench hit bare metal when taking off the positive terminal (zapped).
  • Next, move on to the post.  You can use a wire brush or sandpaper if you’ve got some around.  Most gas stations sell battery post cleaners or wire brushes.
  • Put the newly cleaned positive terminal back on first, then move to the ground side.

Once the corrosion is cleaned, put the battery terminals back on the posts and see if your Journey starts.  If it does, make sure to let it run for a bit just in case the battery isn’t fully charged before shutting your vehicle off.

2. Battery Insufficiently Charged (Most Common Cause)

2014 dodge journey will not start

An insufficiently charged battery is the number one reason your Dodge Journey is clicking but refuses to start.  When this happens, either the battery is bad and can’t hold a charge, or the alternator isn’t charging it enough.

A battery’s main job is to provide enough electricity to power the starter motor.  Once your vehicle has started, the alternator can provide enough voltage to run everything.

Your Journey’s battery voltage can get too low to turn the starter over, even if it is still powering the lights. A parasitic battery drain can also cause the battery to drain.

Testing the Battery

2014 dodge journey will not start

You can test your vehicle’s battery, or you can have it tested.  Here’s how to test it with a multimeter:

  • Set the multimeter to volts and touch the negative and positive terminals.
  • With the engine off, a healthy battery should read at or north of 12.6 volts.
  • After jumping your Journey (see below), the voltage should read somewhere between 13.5 and 14.5 volts.  If it’s lower than that, the alternator is probably bad.

If you don’t have a multimeter available, you can take your battery to the local parts store, and they’ll test it for free.  You’ll have to pull it and have someone run it up there with you.  It takes a little while, they’ll charge it for you and see if it holds a charge.  Be prepared to wait a bit.

How to Jump Start Your Journey

If you believe your battery is too low to start your vehicle, jump starting it will get you back on the road. Here’s how to do it:

Jump Start Flashing Dash Light Fix

  • Connect to the positive terminals first : Connect the red jumper cable to your vehicle’s positive battery terminal, then connect the other end to the running vehicle’s positive battery terminal.
  • Connect to the negative terminals : Connect the black jumper cable to your vehicle’s ground terminal. Then connect the other ground wire to a good ground source on the running vehicle. There’ll usually be a spot close to the battery labeled ground. Any engine or accessory bolt that’s clean will usually work fine. The ground on the running vehicle’s battery will technically do the job too, but there’s a small chance that hooking up this way can start a fire at the battery, so don’t do it.
  • Do nothing : Let the battery charge for a few minutes.
  • Engage your Journey’s Starter : If it seems like it’s acting differently (flashing less or trying to start), adjust the jumper cable contacts and let it charge some more.
  • Remove the jumper cables : Reverse the process.

3. Faulty Starter Motor (Somewhat Likely)

Starter motor clicking

After you’ve confirmed that the battery voltage is OK and the battery terminals are tight and corrosion free, the next most likely cause of a clicking noise and no start condition is a bad starter motor.

A bad starter will usually make more of a clunk than a click when turning the key forward.

If you’re stranded, you can always take a hammer to the starter and see if that’ll get it to turn over.

4. Bad Ground Connection to the Starter

Your Journey’s starter uses a strong ground cable that should be securely bolted to the engine.  If the connection has gotten weak due to corrosion, melting, or rodent damage, the vehicle won’t be able to start.

A quick visual inspection will quickly tell you if anything is wrong and only takes a few seconds.

Conclusion: Dodge Journey Clicking and Won’t Start

A dead battery is the most common cause of a clicking sound and no start in the Dodge Journey.  Checking the battery cables is something that you can do on the spot and fast.

If you have to jump-start your vehicle, make sure to drive it straight to a place that will test your car’s battery.  Otherwise, it might not start again when you park.

Dodge Journey: Hard Brake Pedal And Why Your Car Won't Start

The Dodge Journey is known for its versatility and reliability, making it a favored choice among families and adventurers alike. However, like any vehicle, it's not immune to problems. A common issue some owners may encounter is a scenario where the car won't start, and the brake pedal feels unusually hard. Understanding the root causes of these issues is crucial for any Dodge Journey owner. We're here to dissect the problem of Dodge Journey not starting as the brake pedal is hard, offering insights into why they occur and how to resolve them effectively.

Brake System Complications

The sensation of a hard brake pedal can be alarming, especially when accompanied by starting troubles. This issue often points to a problem within the brake system itself, such as a vacuum leak or failure in the brake booster. The brake booster relies on engine vacuum to multiply the force applied by the driver, making it easier to stop the vehicle. When there's a leak or the booster is failing, it can result in a hard brake pedal. Checking for hissing sounds when the engine is running or inspecting for visible damage to vacuum lines can help identify a vacuum leak. If the brake booster is at fault, it typically requires professional replacement.

Electrical System Anomalies

Another potential cause for your Dodge Journey like Dodge 024 (1978 - 1989) Chilton not starting, paired with a hard brake pedal, could be related to the vehicle's electrical system. Issues such as a drained battery, faulty starter, or problematic ignition switch can all prevent the car from starting. These problems may also indirectly affect the brake system, as modern vehicles rely heavily on electronic signals for various operations, including the braking process. Ensuring your battery is fully charged and testing the starter and ignition switch are vital steps in troubleshooting these electrical issues.

Power Brake System Issues

In addition to the traditional brake system and electrical anomalies, the power brake system itself can also contribute to the problem. This system enhances the brake pedal's effectiveness, reducing the effort needed to stop the car. If there's a malfunction within this system, it could lead to a hard brake pedal. This might be due to issues with the power brake pump or problems within the system's hydraulic lines. Regular inspection and maintenance of the power brake system can prevent these issues from arising.

Addressing the Problem

When faced with a hard brake pedal and a Dodge Journey that won't start, the first step is to calmly assess the situation. Checking the brake fluid levels and ensuring there are no leaks in the system is a good starting point. If the problem seems to be electrical, verifying the battery's condition and the functionality of the starter and ignition switch is crucial. For more complex issues related to the brake booster or power brake system, consulting with a professional mechanic is often the best course of action. They can provide a comprehensive diagnosis and recommend the most effective solution.

Encountering a hard brake pedal and a non-starting Dodge Journey can be frustrating and concerning. However, by understanding the potential causes behind these issues, you can take informed steps towards resolving them. Whether the problem lies in the brake system, electrical components, or power brake system, there are solutions available.

Dodge Journey dashboard lights flicker and won’t start – causes and how to fix it

Flickering dashboard lights in Dodge Journey when attempting to start the engine might seem like a major malfunction has occurred, but in the majority of cases it’s not a serious cause for concern.

Dodge Journey

The most common causes for flickering dashboard lights and no engine crank in Dodge Journey are weak battery, corrosion on battery terminals, and bad ground connection.

1. Weak battery

The leading cause of flickering dashboard lights and no start in Dodge Journey is weak battery. You may also hear rapid clicking noise when you try to start the engine. If there isn’t enough charge in the battery to power the starter motor, and you try to crank the engine, the battery voltage will get so low that it can’t properly power the lights, accessories and of-course the starter.

Symptom: Rapid clicking sound

How to test the battery in journey.

The easiest method to check the 12v battery in Journey is by measuring the voltage with a multimeter. A healthy battery should have 12.6 volts or more when fully charged. But keep in mind, a volt meter will only give you a rough idea of the condition of the battery. Sometimes a battery showing over 12.4 volts may not be able to supply enough current to crank the engine.

2014 dodge journey will not start

Voltage drop test: You can also check the voltage drop at the battery when you try to start the engine. If the voltage drops too much, below 10 volts, your battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the engine. This can happen due to internal degradation of the battery, if the vehicle has been sitting for a long time, or if the alternator in your Journey has malfunctioned and not charging the battery properly.

How to jump start Journey

To rule out dead battery, your best course of action is to jump start your Journey using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available. Requirements: The engine of both the vehicles should be off, and the transmission in Park.

  • Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery in Journey.
  • Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of donor battery.
  • Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery.
  • Finally connect the other end of the black cable to any bare unpainted metal part of the body or engine of your Journey. Safety warning: Connecting black cable directly to the negative terminal of Journey battery can ignite flammable gases from the battery due to sparks.
  • Start your Journey.
  • Remove the cables in the reverse order.

Warning: There is always a risk of burning up the alternator or other electrical components if the engine of the donor battery vehicle is running during jump start. Therefore it is recommended to keep the engine of the donor vehicle off when jump starting your Journey.

2. Poor battery connection

It is possible the battery in your Dodge Journey is in good health, but the current flow is interrupted due to loose electrical connection, damaged wire, or corrosion on the battery terminals.

Corrosion on battery terminals

Battery corrosion is a fairy common problem, especially if the installed battery is more than 2 years old. Corrosion occurs when the battery acid reacts with the metal terminals which can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow. If there isn’t enough current flow to crank the engine, the dashboard lights may flicker and you may also hear clicking noise from the starter solenoid when you try to start the engine.

Check battery terminals

To know if your Journey starting problems are from dirty battery terminals, you need to investigate them. Lift the plastic covers over the terminals and check for any signs of corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you may not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

2014 dodge journey will not start

Clean the battery terminals

Quick cleaning: There is a neat little trick with which you can clean corrosion on the battery terminals of your Journey in under a minute. Pour hot boiling water over the corroded terminals and the corrosion will just melt away. Do one terminal at a time and don’t let water puddle on the top of the battery touch both terminals at the same time, this can short the battery.

Thorough cleaning: To thoroughly clean the battery in your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the terminal cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative terminal using a wrench or a plier. Next you can unplug the red positive terminal cable. Be careful not to touch both terminals with your metal tool, it will be one expensive mistake. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery with sandpaper. After cleaning, reconnect the cables in reverse order, positive first, then negative.

3. Bad ground connection

What is a ground connection.

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body/chassis of Journey, called a ground connection. The engine also requires a ground connection to function, but the way the engine is mounted, it does not allow the electric current to flow between the engine and the body (due to non-conductive rubber insulated engine mounts). For this purpose, a ground strap/wire is used to connect the engine and the chassis.

2014 dodge journey will not start

What happens when the ground connection goes bad?

If the ground connection of the chassis or the engine goes bad in your Journey due to rust or corrosion, you will face all sorts of electrical issues, including clicking noises, flickering dashboard lights, and no start problem. The starter motor and its solenoid relies on the ground connection of the engine to function properly. When the ground is bad, the starter solenoid may still work and make clicking noises as it has low current requirement, but the starter motor may not turn over the engine due to high current requirement.

How to check if the ground connection is good?

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Journey by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the chassis/body of the vehicle and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal (unpainted) part of the chasses/body. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and any exposed metal part of the engine.

Inspect the ground connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Journey. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables (battery to body, body to engine) for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper.

There are many reasons why your Dodge Journey dashboard lights flicker and won’t start. When looking for the reason, you should start with the most obvious causes that are easy to diagnose: weak battery, and poor electrical connection.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop. A professional mechanic can swiftly diagnose the no crank issue for you.

6 Causes of Dodge Journey Won’t Start Hard Brake Pedal

Dodge Journey Won't Start, Hard Brake Pedal

Experiencing a Dodge Journey that won’t start and has a hard brake pedal can be quite frustrating. This common issue leaves many people wondering what the cause may be. In this article, we’ll dive into some possible reasons and solutions to help you get your vehicle back on the road.

To begin, let’s explore some of the potential causes for this problem. When a Dodge Journey won’t start and exhibits a hard brake pedal, it could be due to a variety of issues. Some common causes include a dead battery, a faulty brake light switch, or a bad brake booster.

Possible Causes for Hard Brake Pedal and Solutions

Brake booster issues.

If you’re experiencing a hard brake pedal in your Dodge Journey, one possible cause could be a malfunctioning brake booster. The brake booster assists your braking system by using vacuum pressure to make it easier to press the pedal. When the booster fails, it can result in a stiff or hard brake pedal. To fix this issue, check for any leaks in the booster, the vacuum hose, or the check valve. If necessary, you may need to replace the faulty component(s) to restore normal braking function.

Brake Light Switch Problems

Another reason for a hard brake pedal could be a problematic brake light switch. The switch activates your brake lights when you press the pedal, and it may interfere with the brake pedal’s movement if it’s not working properly. A simple solution is to inspect the brake light switch for any visible damage or malfunction – it’s usually located near the top of the brake pedal assembly. If needed, replace the switch with a new one to resolve this issue.

Brake Vacuum Booster Defects

Lastly, your Dodge Journey’s hard brake pedal issue might be caused by a defect in the brake vacuum booster. This component amplifies the force you apply to the brake pedal, making it easier to brake. If there’s a vacuum leak or an issue with the booster’s diaphragm, it can lead to a stiff or difficult-to-press brake pedal. To address this problem, inspect the vacuum booster and its connections for any leaks or damage. If you find any issues, it’s crucial to replace the defective part to ensure your vehicle’s braking system functions safely and effectively.

Potential Reasons for Car Not Starting and Solutions

Battery complications.

One common issue you might face when your Dodge Journey won’t start is related to the battery. A weak or dead battery could prevent the engine from cranking. To diagnose this problem, perform a battery voltage test. If you find that the battery is indeed the issue, consider charging it or replacing it with a new battery. Additionally, inspect the battery cables for corrosion and clean them if necessary.

Starter Motor Malfunctions

A faulty starter can also cause your car not to start. The starter motor may fail due to wear and tear or electrical problems. To fix this, check for any loose connections or blown fuses related to the starter circuit. If necessary, replace the bad starter with a new one to get your car running again.

Ignition Switch Failures

Ignition switch problems could be another reason your Dodge Journey won’t start. Issues with the ignition system can prevent the flow of power to the starter motor, making it difficult for the engine to crank. To resolve this, inspect the ignition switch for any damages or loose connections and replace it if needed.

Key Fob and Keyless Ignition Problems

If your car features a keyless ignition, issues with the key fob could be preventing it from starting. The key fob might be out of range, have a dead battery, or suffer from signal interference. Ensure that the key fob is charged and in proper working order by testing its functionality, and replace the battery if necessary. If your Dodge Journey uses a traditional key, make sure it is not worn or damaged, as this could also cause ignition issues.

Remember to consult a professional mechanic if you’re unsure about any of these fixes. By addressing the potential reasons outlined above, you’ll be on your way to resolving the issue and getting your Dodge Journey back on the road.

Final Thoughts

Your Dodge Journey may not start due to a hard brake pedal. A weak battery, bad brake light switch, or issues with the starter could be the culprits. Don’t worry, though. By troubleshooting and addressing these issues, you’ll have your vehicle starting smoothly in no time. Remember, staying attentive to your car’s needs is crucial for a reliable driving experience.

Drove my 2014 Dodge Journey Home. I was here for about 20 minutes and went to get back in it and start it and it won't start. All the lights come on, it beeps and everything else but when I engaged the foot brake and push the start button it just does nothing. This is not the first time it's happened and this is fluffing annoying.

I will never...ever purchase another Chrysler/Dodge vehicle again. I called Dodge and the best they could do, according to the representative, was give me $35.00 a day toward a rental...for 3 days. What the hell will that do for me?! Its not like I have spare cars laying around at my damned disposal. For work, I am a home visitor which means I go to people's homes. I can't do that if I don't have a car. I'm jeopardy of losing my job if this issue isn't resolved soon.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

What was their favourite thing about Russia?

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
