Tour de France Guide

With the Race mode, you can take part in stage races or classic races (single day). Choose 1 team from the 26 teams available and try to fulfil your objectives so you can earn XP to unlock new races.

For each stage raced, you earn XP (5 XP on Amateur difficulty, 10 XP on Professional and 15 XP on Champion or Legend). If you win a stage, you earn double the XP. If you fulfil your team's objective, the XP is doubled at the end of the challenge, which helps you to unlock races quicker.

For each race, the game registers your various victories in each classification to draw up your list of Accomplishments for each team.

The Pro Team puts you in charge of a team that will have to prove itself to attain peak Pro Cycling ranking.

To reach the number one spot, you will need to score the maximum amount of PC points per season. You can earn these points by finishing stages in well-placed positions, through your overall classification, and also by winning other classifications (green jersey, polka-dot jersey, combativity, best young rider).

The more you participate in prestigious races, the more points you can earn. Depending on your classification at the end of the season, you receive bonus points which will enable you to recruit better riders. But watch out: the riders have exacting standards and will only join your team if it has a high enough PC classification.

Your team starts at the very bottom of the ladder. You will have to prove yourself to get an invitation from the race organisers. To take part in the most prestigious races like the Tour de France and Paris-Roubaix and score a high amount of PC points, you must first demonstrate your skills in lesser races such as the Route Corse or the Open Tour.

In Pro Team mode you will manage a squad of a maximum of 15 riders. You must keep them in peak condition in order to perform well in races they are suited to. To this end, you can give each rider 2 peaks per season. While in peak condition, their chances of performing in bad condition are greatly lessened.

You must also manage the riders’ weak moments as they will have a much higher chance of performing badly when not in peak condition. This would all but eliminate any hope of coming out on top in the overall classification. You will have to rotate the members of your squad in order to maintain a competitive team at all times.

Pro Leader mode lets you create your own rider and guide them through various missions. Each mission you complete will allow you to improve one or more of your rider’s ratings, making them stronger. Completing all 136 missions will turn your rider into a downright cycling legend.

You can choose between 4 career paths: climber, sprinter, puncher and versatile. Depending on your choice, your rider will begin their career with different ratings which will help or hinder them in completing certain missions. For example, a climber will have more difficulty winning missions that improve their Sprint rating, and more ease on missions that improve their Mountain rating.

The Editor allows you to create 3 databases so that you can live your own customised experiences. You can alter the ratings of riders, the starting line-ups of each team, as well as the teams invited to each race. You can also alter the wearers of distinctive jerseys, the names of riders, as well as the names of teams.

Watch: A funny Tour de France ad for the riders just getting back into it

You don't have to be a pro to enjoy watching the race.

The Tour de France is coming up quickly and cyclists around the world are getting excited for the three-week cycling event of the year. Danish channel TV 2 Play (the country’s broadcaster of the event) just put out an ad that features some of the cyclists who didn’t make the cut for this year’s Tour de France, but who are nonetheless feeling the energy of the Tour.

The ad features cyclists getting ready to ride and participating in cycling culture by shaving their legs and wearing the full road cycling getup. One cyclist takes a very dusty cover off his road bike but seems proud and ready to hit the road.

The riders are a bit judged by their confused family members (particularly a teenage daughter), their fitness is probably not at its peak and clipping into clipless pedals is not always easy, but they still seem to be enjoying themselves back on the road regardless.

All the middle-aged cyclists come together in the end to form a peloton, led by TV 2 Play Danish Tour de France commentators Dennis Ritter and former professional cyclist Rolf Sørensen. “So we roll again,” says the text at the end of the ad, which finishes by cutting to a cyclist napping on the couch, tired out by a ride, as the Tour streams in the background.

Tour de France 2021

The 2021 Tour de France will be the 108th edition of the race. It was originally scheduled to kick off in Copenhagen, Demark, but due to the pandemic, the first stage was relocated to Brest, France. Denmark will now host the  Grand Départ  in 2022.

This year’s race will cover 3,417.5 km throughout 21 stages around the country. In Canada, cyclists can stream the Tour de France on Flobikes , from Saturday, Jun. 26 to Sunday, Jul. 18.

Tour de France | 10 tips voor je Tourspel, wie moet je wel en vooral niét kiezen?

De Tour de France begint bijna. Zaterdag gaan de renners in het Baskenland van start. Tot die tijd heb je nog kans om aan je Tourploeg te sleutelen als je meedoet aan een van de bekende Tourspellen. Wie moet je wel en vooral niet kiezen? Wij helpen je een klein beetje op weg en geven je tips voor je Tourspel.

Doe je trouwens met ons mee aan het AD Wielerspel? We hebben een eigen ‘vriendenleague’ aangemaakt, zodat je het tegen andere Fiets-lezers op kunt nemen. Aan het einde van de Tour geven we aan de vijf beste spelers leuke prijzen weg, dus twijfel niet en schrijf je in !

Tip 1: Wat zijn de spelregels?

Om te beginnen is het goed om te weten waarmee je punten kunt verdienen. Gaat het in het spel om de daguitslag of telt uiteindelijk ook het eindklassement mee? Sprokkel je ook punten als een ploeggenoot van een renner wint of niet? Kortom: verdiep je eerst in het spel en de spelregels alvorens je een team samenstelt.

Tip 2: Kies voor Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard

Dit is de meest saaie en voor de hand liggende tip: kies voor Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard. Deze Tour de France is er eentje voor de klimmers, en wat dat betreft steken Pogacar en Vingegaard er bovenuit. Zonder pech of ander ongemak gaan zij veel punten scoren in de Tour. Twijfel dus niet en neem ze sowieso in je team, anders sta je waarschijnlijk voor de start al met 1-0 achter.

Tip 3: Bekijk het parcours

Een goede voorbereiding is het halve werk. Haal de Tourgids van Procycling in huis, blader door het etappeoverzicht en kom erachter dat het een loodzware Tour wordt met veel bergetappes. Stem je team daar een beetje op af.

Tip 4: Wissels maken het verschil

Bij de meeste Tourspellen is het mogelijk om renners gedurende de Tour te wisselen. Meestal heb je zo’n vijf wissels achter de hand. Soms moet je ze vooraf al doorgeven, soms kun je ze tijdens de Tour nog aanpassen. Denk hier ook goed over na: telt bijvoorbeeld het eindklassement mee voor de punten, zorg er dan voor dat je klassementsrenners achter de hand houdt.

Tip 5: Tijdrijders, ja of nee?

Deze Tour de France staat er maar één tijdrit op het programma. Dubbel pech voor de specialisten: de race tegen de klok loopt ook nog op. Wil je voor iemand als Stefan Küng kiezen puur voor die ene tijdrit? Doe het niet. Gelukkig doen er al niet heel veel specialisten mee aan deze Tour, dus dat maakt de keuzestress wat dat betreft al een stuk makkelijker.

Tip 6: Kies voor de kopmannen

Bestudeer altijd goed de ploegen en lees wat ze er in de media over zeggen. Wie worden er naar voren geschoven als kopmannen? Bij veel sprintploegen weet je al zeker voor wie ze gaan. Lotto Dstny mikt bijvoorbeeld volledig op Caleb Ewan, Jayco-AlUla zet in op Dylan Groenewegen en Fabio Jakobsen wordt bij Soudal-Quick Step uitgespeeld. Zij gaan punten pakken. Maar hoe zit dat bij bijvoorbeeld Bora-hansgrohe? Jordi Meeus en Danny van Poppel zijn gelijkwaardig aan elkaar. Het is dan maar de vraag wie er daadwerkelijk gaat sprinten, ook al zou Meeus op papier de sprinter moeten zijn. Ga voor de kopmannen.

Tip 7: Trap niet in Peter Sagan

Heb je een zwarte lijst samengesteld? Grote kans dat Peter Sagan erop staat. Natuurlijk heeft de Slowaak een enorme erelijst opgebouwd en ja, heel misschien sprint hij nog wel een keer in de top 10, maar op basis van zijn laatste resultaten is de kans klein dat de Slowaak rendabel voor jouw team wordt. Twijfel je over een renner die je al vaker in de steek heeft gelaten? Doe het niet. Ander goed voorbeeld: Simon Yates. Zal je net zien dat Sagan het groen wint en Yates de Tour, dan verwijderen we deze tip gewoon

Tip 8: Kies voor klimmende sprinters

Misschien wel de belangrijkste tip: kies voor sprinters die goed een berg kunnen verteren. Dylan Groenewegen heeft in aanloop naar de Tour vooral etappekoersen gereden waarin er geklommen moest worden. Dat om straks ‘frisser’ aan de sprintetappes te beginnen. Biniam Girmay, Wout van Aert en Jasper Philipsen kunnen prima een berg over, bij Alexander Kristoff, Sam Welsford en Fabio Jakobsen is dat meer de vraag. Hoeveel sprinters halen de slotweek? Gokje: niet veel.

Tip 9a: Speel op de verrassing

Pogacar, Vingegaard, Jakobsen, Philipsen, Van Aert en Van der Poel heeft iedereen waarschijnlijk wel in zijn of haar team, het gaat er meer om wie je daarnaast opstelt. Elke Tour is er wel een verrassing, en jij moet die renner in je ploeg hebben om je vrienden en collega’s te slim af te zijn. Wie harkt voor jou de punten binnen?

Tip 9b: Pello Bilbao

Met zo’n achternaam moet de renner van Bahrain-Victorious in het openingsweekend wel punten scoren.

BRUSSELS (AP) — World champion Mathieu van der Poel will focus on the Olympic road race at the Paris Games this summer, after competing in the Tour de France, and skip mountain biking.

The versatile Dutch racer said Wednesday that combining the Tour and the road race is “the most logical” choice.

“It ensures that I have a little more time and thus can prepare longer and better,” he said in a statement released by his Alpecin-Deceuninck team.

Van der Poel has won titles in many disciplines and thought at one point about competing in the cross-country mountain bike event at the Olympics. But he faced what he called a “difficult puzzle to put together” with the route of the road race suiting his skills.

“Just the road race? Only mountain biking? Or both?” he said. “Whether or not in combination with the Tour de France, which I personally consider the best possible preparation for the Games.”

Van der Poel finally made his decision.

“Let’s say I chose the most logical thing,” he said. “So, in consultation with the team, I opted for a slightly longer rest period, after which I can build up to the Tour de France and the Olympic road race without time pressure.”

The 29-year-old rider, who has been in impressive form this year with victories at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix classics, said he will work in support of teammate Jasper Philipsen “in his hunt for stage wins and a possible green jersey” of Tour de France’s best sprinter.

“And the goal is to win a stage myself this year,” he said. “Last year I got sick when there were a few stages where I had chances. Hopefully I will be spared from that in this edition.”

Van der Poel added that wearing the world champion’s rainbow jersey this season played a role in his decision to race at the Tour.

“It’s a special year,” he said. “As world champion I like to ride in that jersey as much as possible. So I also prefer not to miss the Tour de France. And that proved to be a good preparation last year, then towards the World Championships.”

He also hinted that he could compete in mountain biking at future Olympics. Van der Poel crashed out of the mountain bike race at the Tokyo Olympics.

“Who knows what’s still possible in 2028 in Los Angeles? That’s still a long time away, but I’ll be in a different phase of my career then,” he said. “Maybe then I can put everything on that mountain biking. This year the combination is just too difficult.”

Van der Poel, who is currently training in Spain, will not compete before the June 29-July 21 Tour de France. The men’s Olympic road race is a challenging 273-kilometer (170-mile) trek set to take place on Aug. 3.

2026 Tour de France all-but-confirmed to start in Barcelona

T he Tour de France is set to welcome its fourth Grand Départ in five years in 2026 with Barcelona all-but-confirmed to host the start of the race in two years.

Following Grand Départs in the Danish capital of Copenhagen and the Basque city of Bilbao in 2023, the 2024 race will kick off in Tuscany this summer, and the race will head to Catalunya in 2026, according to a report by local newspaper El Periódico .

A deal has been reached to start the race in Barcelona after over a year of negotiations between the city's council and Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme, El Periódico reports, with the official announcement set to be made next month.

The deal means that Barcelona will host the start of a Grand Tour for the third time, following Gran Partidas at the Vuelta a España in 1962 and 2023. No Spanish city has yet hosted a Grande Partenza of the Giro d'Italia , while both San Sebastián and Bilbao have hosted Tour de France starts in the past.

Last year, Barcelona hosted an opening team time trial at the Vuelta, followed by a GC-neutralised hilly stage 2 won by Andreas Kron. The city also hosts the hilly closing stage of the Volta a Catalunya, while back in 2009 it hosted a Tour de France stage finish and start.

News of the agreement means that Grand Départs of the next three Tours de France are now set, with Lille hosting the start of the race in 2025 . The race will begin with two sprint stages and a punchy uphill finish, with stages 2 and 3 both bringing the potential for crosswinds by the North Sea.

With the 2026 Barcelona Grand Départ yet to be officially confirmed, nothing is yet known about how the race's opening days will pan out in terms of route planning.

However, with the race likely having to pass the mountain passes of the Pyrenees to return to France, an early mountain stage could be on the cards, a la stage 4 of this year's race, which crosses the Alpine border from Italy, passing the high-mountain climbs at Sestriere, the Col de Montgenevre, and the Col du Galibier before a descent into Valloire.

Unlike the Tour, the starts of future editions of the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España have yet to be announced. The Spanish race will this year kick off with three stages in neighbouring Portugal, while a start in Monaco has been rumoured for the 2025 edition.
