Isst Du billig dann bist Du billig.

Do it yourself.

This area where the East European Plain touches the Black Sea has seen habitation by civilizations stretching back to Scythian, Roman, Greek, and Ottoman times. In the 18th century, the Russian Empire started to lay a foothold by establishing outposts on this frontier, but then eventually with expansion of the empire it became more of a commerce center due to its premier trade location where the Black Sea meets the Don River. And it saw industrialization, too, causing it to draw people and become one of the largest Russian cities for a time. But it was not without adversity that it passed through the ages, as it saw incursions from the Russian Civil War, cholera epidemics, and occupation by the Germans during the Great World Wars. One of its darker moments was the execution of 30,000 Russian Jews by occupying Nazi forces at Zmievskaya Balka.

But today it is a peaceful metropolis full of green esplanades and theaters and cafes.

Hydrogen-powered aircraft in development by Australian company AMSL Aero aims for net zero aviation

While the race to transform electric vehicles on land speeds up, it is a different story in the sky.

Battery technology is not yet able to power even the smallest aircraft beyond 200 kilometres, and in Australia, that is hardly worth the effort.

But an Australian aviation startup on a mission to decarbonise air travel is developing a battery that could power a small aircraft to travel 1,000 km using hydrogen, and it already has a customer.

AMSL Aero received the first commercial order for its Vertiia aircraft from Aviation Logistics, the company behind regional airline AirLink.

AirLink chief executive Matthew Kline said the purchase was key to meet industry plans to be net zero by 2050.

"Using hydrogen is a game-changer for us, we can get up to 1,000km flight distance and that's what we need for the work we do," he said.

A person in a fluro jacket pushes open the door of an aircraft hangar to reveal a small electric aircraft

The next decade of aviation policy will be outlined with the release of the federal government's Aviation White Paper later this year.

Last year's Green Paper indicated two areas of focus were net zero emissions and accessibility for regional and remote communities, both of which could be supported by aircraft known as Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) services.

Vertiia is the first Australian-made aircraft to apply for AAM-type certification through the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

A rendered image of an electric aircraft on tarmac with the sun setting in the distance

In a statement, CASA called it an exciting yet "daunting" task, considering Vertiia had features of both a helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft.

"Nobody's done this in Australia ever and in that sense, it will be breaking new ground," said manager of aircraft certification, Klaus Schwerdtfeger.

Testing is already underway at an airstrip near Wellington, in central-west New South Wales, and if all regulatory approvals are met, operations could begin in 2027.

AirLink plans to initially rollout Vertiia for its freight and charter flight services, with a view of later introducing the hydrogen-powered aircraft for its scheduled service flying Dubbo, Walgett, Bourke and Lightning Ridge.

A man and a woman stand in front of an electric aircraft inside an airplane hangar

"At the moment, we fly out to Bourke and leave the aircraft out there all day before we fly back in the afternoon," Mr Kline said.

"But because the running costs are so much lower, we could bring that aircraft back and do other flights or run there and back a few times in a day."

Takes off like a helicopter, flies like a plane

As companies across the globe work to improve the fuel efficiency of existing planes, AMSL Aero co-founder Siobhan Lyndon said they chose instead to start from scratch.

"There are companies who are retrofitting fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters but this is a clean-sheet design," she said.

Co-founder and chief engineer Andrew Moore took inspiration from another Australian inventor while developing the Vertiia's box-wing design.

a small box wing aircraft hovers just above ground at a regional airstrip

"It's an evolution of the box kite which Lawrence Hargrave invented, and it's one of the oldest, funnily enough," he said.

Lawrence Hargrave was an Australian aeronautical pioneer who experimented with theories of flight to construct different flying machine models in the late 19th century.

"We actually did lots of configuration studies and just happened to come to the same conclusion that Hargrave did, the box-wing works really well."

Historical photo of two men preparing to launch box kites to fly

The Vertiia design uses eight motors pointed vertically for take-off and landing that rotate to a horizontal position when at cruising altitudes up to 10,000 feet, or 3,000 metres.

While other electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) do exist, AMSL Aero hopes to be the first long-range eVTOL to market using hydrogen.

"Nearly all other eVTOL are focused on electric batteries which have a shorter range to serve the urban air mobility market like Manhattan, or that Silicon Valley-to-San Francisco route," Ms Lyndon said.

"Those aircraft will have a 160km range to start with, but we see hydrogen as a game changer for us to allow that longer range of 1,000km non-stop."

60 million drone flights annually by 2043

In October last year, researchers from Swinburne University of Technology completed the first flight of an uncrewed hydrogen fuel cell eVTOL drone in Australia.

By retrofitting existing drones with electric and hydrogen fuel cell systems, the Aerostructures Innovation Research (AIR) Hub team has been able to develop flight data for hydrogen-powered aircraft.

It is an area sorely lacking in data, according to AIR Hub director Adriano di Pietro.

"There is some work happening internationally, but it's usually locked up in a proprietary sense," Dr di Pietro said.

"The other reason we're doing this work is to really drive the use case and demand, to help Aussie companies actually justify doing first development for aviation systems."

Aerial view of people preparing a hydrogen powered drone for its first flight

AMSL Aero is also developing its own uncrewed aircraft after receiving a $3 million grant from the federal government's Cooperative Research Centre program to build a remotely piloted version of Vertiia to be used for aerial firefighting.

"Being remotely piloted, you might use it in ways that are too risky for a pilot today," Mr Moore said.

"It could potentially save people's lives on the ground by getting to those situations where there's a raging fire threatening people."

In March, Airservices Australia announced plans to develop a digital air traffic management system after an analysis projected the growth of drone and uncrewed aircraft would reach 60 million annual flights by 2043 .

"I think what is not talked about a lot is the fact that aviation underpins a lot of industry in Australia that most people aren't aware of," Dr di Pietro said.

"Most of the land area of Australia is serviced by aviation and certainly, there is a big government push at the moment to drive that forward."

What's your chance of seeing the northern lights tonight? A look at Saturday's forecast

Illuminating the night sky with pink, green and gray colors, the northern lights made its appearance in the United Kingdom and the northern half of the United States on Friday. The magical phenomena could happen again tonight.

The show fascinated many onlookers as they took out their phones to capture the beauty of the night sky. On Friday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued extreme (G5) conditions across the United States. A storm of this intensity has not been seen since October 2003. The storm gained the name "Halloween Storm" and caused many power outages in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, according to Earth.com .

Meteorologists have predicted that the northern lights can be visible on Saturday as well as Sunday. If you are going outside to see the northern lights, forecasters want to remind the public that their solar eclipse glasses can be used for viewing the phenomenon.

Here's what you need to know to prepare for the next viewing of the northern lights.

The northern lights: Danced across the US last night. It could happen again Saturday.

What is the cloud forecast Saturday night? Will clouds block the northern lights?

If you missed the aurora borealis Friday night, you might still catch a glimpse on Saturday or Sunday, depending on where you live. But not if clouds get in the way.

The cloud forecast for Saturday night is generally good for most of America, but some of the people who missed their chance last night due to clouds may have a similar problem Saturday, said AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines. Areas that are likely to be cloudy include New England and Mid-Atlantic regions, as well as parts of the Southern Plains, including Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado.

“Even just a few breaks in the clouds will allow the aurora to be visible,” Kines said. “There’s always hope.”

Peak visibility time Saturday night will be between 9 p.m. and midnight, with some chance until 2 a.m., Kines said. The best views will be in dark areas away from the light pollution of cities, he said, though some reported seeing the auroras Friday night from metro areas like Milwaukee and Detroit.

Sunday night, if there is any aurora to see, those in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic can rejoice, because Kines said the skies should be clearer.

Where can you see the northern lights tonight?

The Space and Weather Prediction Center  offers an experimental forecast map  that shows the aurora may be visible in a wide swath of the U.S. including Oregon, Nebraska, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Other states like California, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida could also see the sky light up again for an encore performance. But visibility will depend on shifting factors that include weather, pollution and cloud cover.

Below are forecast predictions for seeing the northern lights in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Indiana on Saturday.

Rain and clouds are expected to damper expectations to see the aurora borealis around the Rochester, N.Y. area . Elsewhere in NY, the  Lower Hudson Valley could see the lights again, if weather permits.

NWS maps predicting the intensity and location of the northern lights Saturday and Sunday show the aurora will be visible in mid to northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.

Saturday and Sunday are predicted to be mostly cloudy with some rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. The NWS predicted 48% to 58% sky cover in metro Detroit from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday. The western portion of both peninsulas are expected to have a lower cloud cover.

In the Milwaukee area , the evening is expected to bring mostly clear skies and overnight will have scattered clouds, said Tim Halbach, local meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Those living around the Cincinnati region could be treated to the northern lights Saturday night with the NWS' Wilmington, Ohio , office forecasting dry, partly cloudy conditions. Clouds shouldn't be an issue as many Ohioans reported seeing the lights Friday despite some cloud cover.

In a telephone interview, Mike Bettwy, operations chief of the NOAA's  Space Weather Prediction Center  in Boulder, Co, said Indianapolis and surrounding areas might have a better chance of seeing the aurora today and Sunday.

They can expect clear skies tonight, Bettwy said.

"The aurora itself might be actually a little bit less active than it was last night," he told IndyStar. "I think the ability for you to see it will be better because the skies will be clearing out — at least in the Indianapolis area and that immediate vicinity."

Northern lights forecast path

If you want to get a better idea of if you will be able to see the northern lights from your state, check NOAA's aurora forecast tool , which has a 30-minute forecast window.

The auroras are a natural light display in Earth's sky that are famously best seen in high-latitude regions.

Scientist left amazed by the aurora

The aurora seen on May 10 amazed Antonella Fruscione, an astrophysicist at Harvard University. She sent photos of the lights and the April eclipse to her friends in Italy. The northern lights weren't as prominent in Italy as it was in other places.

"And I sent them the picture that I took at the solar eclipse and I said, 'Can you imagine how fortunate I was this year, one month apart, I see these two incredible spectacles of the universe,'" she recalled telling them.

The phenomena seen Friday and possibly Saturday night isn't usual, she said.

"It's a very rare occurrence, especially because last night it was really visible," Fruscione said.

That's because the Earth's magnetic activity was at a nine, the highest the index goes, coupled with the Sun being at an active peak, causing eruptions. She added the colors cannot be predicted either as it depends on how the solar energetic particles interact with oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Oxygen appears green, while nitrogen appears purple, blue or pink, she said.

"It just depends on which atoms in the atmosphere this particle interact with," Fruscione said.

She declined to predict how strong Saturday's aurora could be as it's not in her expertise, but said people make predictions all the time about space weather not just for the northern lights, but to ensure communications, space stations, astronauts and other matter in space doesn't get majorly disrupted.

Down on Earth, however, the activity is harmless to humans.

"It's completely harmless because the particles do not don't do not reach us," Fruscione said. "The reason why we see the colors is that the particle interacts with the atoms and they make these beautiful colors and that's it."

For Saturday, and any other day where chatter about the aurora borealis is high, Fruscione encouraged people to download an aurora forecasting app to their phones so they can see the colorful skies.

What are the northern lights?

The northern lights materialize when energized particles from the sun reach Earth's upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph,  according to Space.com . Earth's magnetic field redirects the particles toward the poles through a process that produces a stunning display of rays, spirals and flickers that has fascinated humans for millennia.

10 Things That Delighted Us Last Week: From $28 Target Shirtdresses to Met Gala Stripper Heels

aeroh travel kitchen

We write about hundreds of products every week. Here, in our version of the Sunday circular, we’ve plucked some of our recent favorites: expert-recommended essentials, life-changing stuff you didn’t know you needed, newly launched gizmos, and very good deals we uncovered while trawling the vast online-shopping universe — including the $28 shirtdress one writer owns in multiple colors, the pigmented sheets that inspired one editor to swap out her white bedding, and an easy-to-assemble gas grill just in time for outdoor-dinner-party season.

The $50 stripper heels everyone wore to the Met Gala

Pleasers Sky-301

While scrolling through photos from the Met Gala, we couldn’t help but notice multiple celebs — including Kim Kardashian, Doja Cat, and Janelle Monáe — wearing the same sky-high, see-through plastic footwear . Pleasers, a line of stripper heels that retail for about $50 to $100, were the shoes, and writer Erin Schwartz says it’s no surprise to them in a fashion context: Pleasers add approximately six inches to the wearer’s height, and “they’re almost a neutral,” Schwartz wrote.

Tinted mineral sunscreen for a (white-cast-free) glow …

RMS SuperNatural Radiance Serum Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen

Mineral-based sunscreens had always been a no-go for Strategist contributor Mbiye Kasonga because of how “ghostly white” they made her look — until last year when RMS Beauty sent her a bottle of its new tinted formula. The darkest shade, Rich Aura, has a caramel hue that, after being rubbed in thoroughly, deepens into a brown color with a slight shimmer, leaving skin dewy and radiant. “All in all, this is the first mineral sunscreen I’ve found that I can wear with confidence,” Kasonga said.

… and the glittery setting spray that will make skin sparkle

ONE/SIZE by Wicked Popular Glitter On ‘Til Dawn Setting Spray

In last week’s edition of The Strategist Beauty Brief , our writer Rachael Griffiths tested the One/Size beauty collaboration with the Broadway show Wicked , which includes a glittery version of the brand’s best-selling setting spray . After thoroughly coating her finished makeup with it, Griffiths said, the fast-drying formula created a completely matte finish and the flecks of cool-toned glitter instantly caught the sunlight. “I’m 100 percent going to pack it in my makeup bag for Glastonbury,” she wrote.

Editor’s note: The spray is currently sold out, but you can sign up  here  for updates on a restock.

The protein powder Juliette Lewis “lives and breathes” by

Simply Tera's Organic Whey Protein

“I am one of these people with a hummingbird metabolism where I have to eat every couple hours to sustain energy,” Juliette Lewis told us this week. That’s why she turns to this whey protein — which she says is easy to digest and even tastes good — to stay satiated. Lewis uses it to make protein shakes and has a simple recipe: “This protein powder , almond milk, blueberries, and a banana in a Nutribullet , and you’re set.”

The $28 Target shirtdress one writer owns in multiple colors

Universal Thread Women's Long Sleeve Cinch Waist Maxi Shirtdress

Strategist contributor Diksha Basu uncovered this no-fuss, delightfully soft shirtdress for less than $35 at Target . Basu, who owns the dress in dark navy and blue stripes (and is considering buying a third color), says the material is easy to machine wash and doesn’t wrinkle easily, making it great for travel. “The Target pictures don’t show it, but the dresses can be quite sexy,” Basu wrote. “They have slits up both sides so you can show a little leg when the breeze blows, and you can unbutton according to how sexy you’re feeling.” Another bonus: They have pockets.

Nick Viall’s weighted jump rope

All In Motion Weighted Jump Rope Black

Another item to add to your travel packing list: the super-portable jump rope Nick Viall always brings with him on the road. “Not every hotel I stay in has a gym or a gym that I want to use, so it’s just a great easy way to get cardio in when I’m on the go,” Viall told us. Plus, the weighted handles add a little extra resistance.

A magnetic knife block that will keep blades sharper for longer

Material The Stand

If your kitchen knives are taking up premium drawer space, consider a magnetic knife block, which can be wall mounted or sit upright on your counter. In our roundup of the best magnetic knife blocks , chef Ana Castro recommended this Material Kitchen stand for its simplicity. The white-ash wood has a particularly sleek look, and despite its slim silhouette, the block can hold eight to ten knives.

The moss-color sheets that inspired one editor to swap out her white bedding

Studio Sutram Fitted Sheet

We put a lot of work into tracking down everything you need to get a good night’s sleep — from testing mattresses to studying the difference between percale and sateen sheets. When it comes to our own beds, we’re a bit obsessive, too. In our guide to making a bed , senior editor Simone Kitchens said she has moved away from white bedding because “it’s not easy to keep looking good” and instead loves these earthy olive-green sheets from Studio Sutram (which was featured in our Secret Strategist newsletter). The brand has “beautiful pigmented sheets and duvets in solids, and you can build a tonal mono-color look with them,” Kitchens said.

A no-assembly-tools-required gas grill for summer dinner parties

TYTUS Fresno Series Gunmetal Gray Island Grill

As seen in our guide to the best gas grills , the TYTUS is our top-rated choice for an affordable at-home model. Strategist contributor and grill expert Jonathan Deutsch, who tested the TYTUS for himself, said, “Even for me, the least handy person you could imagine, I had the grill assembled in the promised five minutes without tools.” The TYTUS also delivers where it counts most: It provides reliable, even, intense heat that’s ideal for achieving a high-quality sear.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.
