Siem Reap - Angkor Wat - Banteay Srei Temple

Explore the remote temples of the Khmer Empire on a full-day tour of Banteay Srey and the early Angkor temples of Roluos from Siem Reap. Admire bas reliefs, and sandstone carvings. Return to the city for a buffet dinner and Apsara dance show.

Video Travel Inspiration

Discover some of the unique temples and carvings of the Angkor complex on a full-day tour of Banteay Srey and the early temples of the Roluos group, and end with a traditional Apsara dance show and dinner.

You will be picked up from your hotel in Siem Reap at approximately 08:00 for the drive to Banteay Srey near Phnom Dei. Located 16 miles (25 kilometers) from the main Angkor complex, Banteay Srey was part of the medieval capitals of Yasodharapura and Angkor Thom, and is a jewel of Khmer art. Admire mythological carvings in the temple’s red sandstone walls, and see ornate pediments that depict Khmer legends.

After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to the early Angkor temples of the Roluos group. You will visit Preah Ko to marvel at the first temple built in the ancient city of Hariharalaya. Preah Ko (Sacred Bull) takes its name from the 3 sandstone statues that face the temple's central towers, representing the white bull that served as the mount of Shiva.

Continue to the temple mountain of Bakong, the state temple of King Indravarman I in Hariharalaya, and see fragments of the original bas reliefs. Next, admire the carved lintels of the temple of Lolei, the last of the 3 temples of Hariharalaya.

Return to Siem Reap for a buffet dinner. En route, and time permitting, you will stop at a local village to learn how sugar is produced from the sugar palm plants. Back in the city, watch a traditional Apsara dance show, and be dazzled by the costumed dancers presenting a graceful display of Cambodian folk stories.

Banteay Srei Tour

Welcome to Bantey Srei & Kbal Spean Tour!

Even if you’re feeling pretty templed-out, you’ll probably be captivated by Banteay Srei , 35km northeast of Siem Reap. Built of fine-grained rose-pink sandstone, it’s the most elaborately decorated of all Angkor’s monuments, its walls, false doors, lintels and exotic soaring pediments all richly embellished with floral motifs and Ramayana scenes. Comprising just a single level, it’s positively diminutive compared with the region’s state-temples. A little way further out from Siem Reap, at Kbal Spean , you can trek along the river to see fabulous scenes of Hindu gods and sacred linga carved into the river bed.

Banteay Srei (closes 5pm) is easily reached from Siem Reap on the new road from National Route 6 or by the old road which heads north from Pradak and passes through countryside and villages before reaching the temple. It’s a further 10km to reach Kbal Spean (closes 3pm), and it’s best to allow at least an hour and a half for the visit – it’s around 45 minutes to climb the hill. You need a valid Angkor pass to visit both sites; a one-day pass only can be purchased at Banteay Srei ($20) . For refreshments there are restaurants at Pradak and on the new road near Banteay Srei, and food stalls at Banteay Srei and Kbal Spean. A new visitor and interpretation centre was opened at Banteay Srei in 2009, and things are now fairly organized with visitors being directed through the site in an attempt to prevent jams – unfortunately it doesn’t work very well and it’s as well to make sure you have plenty of time to make the best of this wonderful temple.

This tour take around 6 to 8 hours to finish.

Temple and place to visit:

Bantey Srei Temple – Kbal Spean Mountain (water fall) – Bantey Samre Temple – Local Villages & Market

See our  How We Roll  page to learn about the general rules of thumb for visiting the temples. We encourage all our guests to follow these rules, as the authorities enforce them, and we cannot make exceptions.

Small group tours!

Small enough to explore each location separately, yet large enough to foster a pleasant social atmosphere! Our group size is never more than ten people.

We maintain this as our typical maximum small group size as it has always been a crucial strong point in all our guests’ reviews. Our guests have consistently praised our ability to accommodate small groups, and we’ve decided this to be our standard maximum group size.

Why visit Pre Rup?

The pyramidal temple with three levels that is devoted to Shiva.

The Pre Rup temple dates back to the 10th century and was constructed by King.

Rajendravarman. The Temple Mountain is often overlooked and is not as popular with tourists as some of the other temples in the region.

However, the stunning brick structure is something that tourists to the region absolutely have to check out.

A short distance to the south of East Baray’s most southern wall is where you’ll find Pre Rup.

The current name for Pre Rup, which refers to an old ritual that involved twisting the body after the cremation, translates as “turning the body.” Pre Rup is an impressive and unique temple mountain.

At the turn of the 20th century, the Pre Rup had become entirely engulfed in vegetation and was buried under dirt. George Trouvé and Henri Marchal, both of whom were French conservators, undertook the excavation of the temple in the 1930s.

Today, you should make an effort to investigate the temple because it is in remarkable shape, and in comparison to other, more well-known temples, it is relatively peaceful and quiet, making it an ideal location for such an investigation.

  • From the peak of Pre Rup, one may take in some breathtaking panoramas and shoot incredible pictures.
  • When you turn your head to the east, you will be able to see Phnom Bok as well as the mountains that makeup Phnom Kulen.
  • The towers of Angkor Wat may be seen on the horizon to the west of the location.

When compared to other temples built during the same period, the many towers and sanctuaries that make up the temple have a distinct appearance.

If you are interested in taking photographs at Pre Rup, you should go there either very early in the morning or very late in the afternoon, as this is the time of day when the light is ideal for capturing the laterites and brick’s warm tones.

Why visit Banteay Srei?

One of the most impressive structures at Angkor is the Banteay Srei temple, which can be found around 29 kilometers (18 miles) to the northeast of Angkor Wat.

One of the rare temples in the Angkor region to have been commissioned not by a king but rather by a Brahman, Banteay Srei is believed to have been a tutor to Jayavarman V during his reign.

Banteay Srei temple is home to some of the most beautiful and elaborate carvings that can be found anywhere in Angkor.

One of the most, if not the most, decorated temples in the Angkor complex in Cambodia is called Banteay Srei. This Hindu temple in Cambodia dates back to the 10th century and is well-known for the stunning pinkish sandstone and complex wall carvings that it features.

The temple is dedicated to the god Shiva.

Banteay Srei, The Lady Temple, it is also referred to as The Jewel of Khmer Art. Many also call it the “pink temple.” Banteay Srei gets this nickname from the pinkish color of the sandstone that was used in its construction.

This sandstone is malleable and can be carved like wood. This helps explain why there are so many different kinds of ornamental embellishment spread across the entire building. Nearly every surface that may be used has elaborate depictions of various stories and designs on it.

The temple, located in an isolated region, was found again in 1914 and cleaned up around ten years after that. During the 1930s, it was restored by the French conservator Henri Marchal, who used the anastylosis process to put it back together again.

  • It is recommended that you go during the cooler parts of the day, which will also provide you with the best opportunity to capture some breathtaking pictures of the pink temple as the light changes.

Banteay Srei temple is one of the most popular temples in Siem Reap. It’s known as the “lady temple” or the “pink temple” and is a 10th century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva.

It’s often said that Banteay Srei is the “jewel of Khmer art” because of all the intricate carvings. In fact, the name means the “citadel of the women” and this modern name comes from the belief that the carvings are so fine that they could only have been done by the hands of a woman.

Uniquely, Banteay Srei wasn’t built by a king. Instead, it was constructed by two courtiers named Yajnavaraha and Vishnukumara who were counsellors to Rajendravarman II.

Alternatively, you can take Road 6 towards the Roluos Group and then turn north along Road 66.

Getting There

Most people will either take a tuk tuk or a taxi to get to Banteay Srei.

However, if you’re a keen cyclist, then the 35km ride won’t put you off. Remember, that you have to cycle back again, so the total distance will be closer to 70km. You should only attempt this if you are a fit enough to make the return journey. Remember, it gets very hot in Cambodia, so remember to bring a lot of water with you.

Banteay Srei can be combined with a number of tours. Many guests decide to combine a trip to the temple with the Grand Circuit Tour .

The Cambodian Landmine Museum and the Butterfly Centre are also nearby.

Banteay Samre is also a popular choice to combine into one trip. Moreover, Kbal Spean and Phnom Kulen are often combined with Banteay Srei into one tour as they are also nearby.

Accommodation

You won’t find many places to stay in the vicinity of Banteay Srei. There are a couple of local guest houses and homestays in the area. However, most tourists will opt to find accommodation in Siem Reap and make the 30km journey to the temple from town.

Why Visit Banteay Srei?

Banteay Srei is one of the most popular temples on the tourist trail, and for good reason. The beautiful carvings, the unique style, and the fact that it can be combined with so many tours makes it a popular choice for visitors.

You’ll need a temple pass to visit this temple, so it’s a good idea to combine it with other temples so that you get good value for money. It’s not too far from the town but it doesn’t attract the thousands of visitors which the temples closer to Angkor attract. Therefore, it can be a refreshing change to visit Banteay Srei away from the large crowds.

Officially, Banteay Srei was completed on the 22nd April 967 AD. The temple was dedicated to Shiva as were many of the temples built during this time.

Originally, Banteay Srei was called Tribhuvanamahesvara which means the lord of the threefold world. In fact, different parts of the temple were dedicated to different gods. The east-west axis and the buildings to the south were dedicated to Shiva and the ones to the north of the axis were dedicated to Vishnu.

The more modern name “Banteay Srei” was given to the temple because the intricate carvings. The name means “citadel of the women” or “citadel of beauty” in reference to these bas-relief carvings which contain many carvings of devatas.

12th Century

In the early part of the 12th century, Banteay Srei was expanded. The temple remained in use until at least the 14th century. Although it’s not known exactly when the temple was abandoned, it’s thought that it would have been around the same time as the other Angkor temples in the 15th – 16th century.

20th Century

In 1914, Banteay Srei was rediscovered. After World War One in 1923, the French writer and minister, André Malraux , stole four devatas. He was caught and the four devatas were returned.

In the 1930s, the temple was restored using as near to the original methods as possible.

During the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979) and the following civil war, the temple was ravaged by looters.

21st Century

Drainage systems were installed between 2000 and 2003.

The temple has grown to be one of the most popular temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park and attracts many hundreds of visitors each day.

Layout and Design

Banteay Srei was largely made out of pink sandstone. Brick and laterite were used for some walls and structural parts. The temple is known as the “pink temple” and this name comes from the colour of the sandstone. The sandstone was used because it could easily be carved.

There are three enclosures which contain some beautiful carvings. There are scenes depicting Hindu stories including where a demon seizes Sita, Rama’s wife. Another popular scene depicted in the second enclosure shows a fight between Vali and Sugriva, the monkey princes. There are many carvings which show many scenes from Hindu mythology.

The first or inner enclosure is the most decorated part of Banteay Srei and it’s also the part which as been the most successfully restored. This part of the temple was only open to visitors from 2010, but parts of it are still inaccessible to visitors.

There are two libraries made from brick. The carvings here are some of the most superior of any carving done during the Khmer empire. They show true craftsmanship which you won’t see at any other temple.

There are scenes showing Shiva in his home, Mount Kailash, with Uma sitting on his lap. The scene also contains the heads of animals and humans, many lions and Ravana – a ten-headed demon.

There is another scene showing Shiva. This time, he is looking at Kama, the god of love. Again, there are carvings of mythological beings and people.

There is also a sanctuary with six stairways leading up to a platform which is guarded by kneeling statues of humans with animal heads.

Unfortunately, most of these are replicas. The originals having either been stolen or taken away for safekeeping in museums.
