Belfast travel agent shares most popular 2024 summer holiday destinations

Barrhead Travel have seen a January boom in bookings with ten destinations proving most sought after

A Belfast travel agent has revealed the ten most popular summer holiday destinations for people from Northern Ireland.

Barrhead Travel, based in Victoria Square in Belfast city centre, said they have noticed an early January boom in bookings for this summer , with ten destinations proving the most sought after.

All-inclusive holidays remain the most popular for summer 2024, accounting for more than 35% of bookings in the UK. But there is also a noticeable growth in cruising holidays amongst families and couples, with the number of holidaymakers under 40 choosing to cruise has grown by over 30% since 2019.

Holidays focused around touring and adventure are up 110% from 2023, as well as solo travel (up 19% in 2023) and multi-generational bookings (up by 29% in 2023).

Barrhead Travel also noted that holidaymakers are seeking out longer breaks, with the average length of stay now at ten days - up from nine in 2023.

The top destinations booked for 2024 so far include:

  • Med cruising from Southampton

Jacqueline Dobson, President of Barrhead Travel, said: "This time of year remains the most popular time to book a holiday. Cold weather, dark nights, and the festivities behind us, it’s clear that many people want something to look forward to.

"There has been a gradual trend of customers booking earlier – both to take advantage of early booking deals and discounts as well as to secure availability for their preferred date and destination. Getting the best value-for-money is top priority for people and we’re seeing a move towards all-inclusive breaks as well as cruising and escorted touring which have so much included in the price.

"We know how important holidays are to people, and we are seeing demand for multigenerational holidays continue to rise as people go away as part of a large family group to make the most of spending time together.

"From taking advantage of these early deals, to financial protection and general peace of mind, we’re seeing a mass return to reputable travel agents. This demonstrates just how important high street retail culture is and we hope it will continue to grow in 2024."

Barrhead Travel boss calls for more sector support

Last year's performance eclipsed pre-pandemic, but challenges loom in the form of removed funding for tourism education

Despite 2023 being a record-breaking year and 2024 looking on course to match, the boss of one of the UK's largest travel agencies has warned that the sector continues to need support in some areas.

Jacqueline Dobson, president of Barrhead Travel, told Insider that the travel industry has been dealt several major blows recently.

One of these came as the UK Government announced it was defunding travel and tourism courses. In Scotland, as well as delays to funding this year, courses for travel could be non-existent in colleges.

Westminster did pledge funding to support up to 20,000 apprentices for small businesses, while also allowing larger businesses to now transfer half of unused levy funds to different employers.

However, Dobson doesn’t believe the heart of the issue has been addressed – and certainly not across the UK. Scotland, for example, is bound to different levy rules, despite paying into the same pot as English counterparts.

Most recently, the Scottish Government has made the decision to withdraw the Flexible Workforce Development Fund (FWDF) – which is drawn directly from the levy.

An independent report that was commissioned and published earlier this year by the Scottish Government, stating that the funding should be increased and that there should be better ways of distributing it to levy-paying businesses.

"But the government’s actions are at odds with its report," Dobson said. "As well as penalising Scottish businesses - which will continue to pay into the UK levy pot without being able to access the FWDF that is funded through the levy percentage that is filtered back to the Scottish Government - it will have a knock-on impact on colleges and educational institutions across the country."

She continued: "Apprenticeships have been a real challenge, it feels like there's a lack of support and now a genuine concern around courses with City & Guilds withdrawing the qualification this year.

"We're trying to expand, and I firmly believe it’s important to have a mixture of people - including young and old, apprentices and those who don’t come from a travel background."

Barrhead Travel runs a four-year training course to help new recruits to the company and the industry, but Dobson is disappointed about the removal of FWDF funding.

She also took aim at the government's retail revitalisation policy, noting that one in six units are empty on Scotland’s high streets.

"We're continuing to engage with the government to make sure they're working with us and listening to the business community.

"We do feel somewhat disadvantaged compared to England, but we’ll continue to invest in our current stores."

Barrhead Travel Kilmarnock closed 2023 as its “best ever” trading year

Barrhead Travel struggled along with the rest of the sector during the pandemic, but now the recover is in full swing, with 2023 figures 26% ahead of 2019, and this year is on track to be beat that again.

"People are prioritising holidays over other discretionary spending," said Dobson, referring to a recent TTG and PwC report which showed travel spend features within the top five spending priorities of all age groups, while a Barclays consumer update revealed that year-on-year spend with travel agents grew by 7.1% in March and 10% in February.

People still want value-for-money though, with more than one in four bookings with Barrhead being for all-inclusive board basis, and similarly, cruise packages are continuing to rise in popularity.

Elsewhere, the company's touring and adventure division finished up by more than 80% last year.

Dobson said that Barrhead is looking to expand its store estate, while using artificial intelligence to help enhance efficiencies, although she "firmly believes" that people still want to talk to a specialist.

As for post-pandemic connectivity, Scottish airports are still not back to where they once were, especially to and from destinations in Asia and the Middle East - with demand currently outstripping supply to places like Dubai.

On this, and problems with a lack of airport staff in key areas, Dobson said the industry is working with operators and they have "definitely learned lessons from last year".

She added: "Efficiencies have been made in terms of travelling through Scottish airports, I think the Easter rush was handled well and we've got a much smoother summer ahead."

TTG - Travel Trade Gazette

New to TTG?

‘clear shift’ towards spring getaways, says barrhead travel boss.

Harry Kemble

Barrhead Travel boss Jacqueline Dobson says there has been a “clear shift” among the agency’s customers towards spring getaways as the annual holiday calendar “evolves”.

eCard

Dobson on Tuesday (2 April) revealed the Scottish independent’s passenger numbers jumped by 20% over the Easter weekend compared with the same period last year.

Demand for the final weeks of the winter season remains high across Barrhead’s retail network with around 10% of new bookings made during the past week being for April departures.

Booking patterns show customers – particularly families – have been taking advantage of an early Easter to go away for longer early in the spring.

All-inclusive beach breaks and cruise bookings, including sailings from Southampton and Miami, are among the most popular types of holidays.

Dobson said: “Easter is one of the first opportunities of the year for families to enjoy some quality time together.

“There’s been a clear shift in the last few years when it comes to spring getaways. We used to see more long weekends or domestic breaks for families during Easter, but now it’s evolved into a key date in the annual holiday calendar."

Dobson added the value available to clients during the “latter half of the holidays” had driven last-minute demand.

She also confirmed that while summer 2024 continued to be the most popular booking season, Barrhead was gearing up for "another flurry of late bookings for the upcoming May bank holidays".

Barrhead’s Brilliant Travel division, which includes its Managed Service Travel Partners and homeworkers, also reported 20% of March sales being last-minute bookings.

Top Easter destinations for their clients include favourites such as Tenerife and Lanzarote, with long-haul locations like Dubai and Barbados making the top five.

Members are also reporting higher sales for cruise this year, citing increased customer demand.

A F50 catamarans sails by the Statue of Liberty.

F1 on the Water? Yachts Race at the Statue of Liberty.

Thousands of spectators turned out over the weekend for SailGP, which brought a high-speed competition, and lots of champagne, to the New York Harbor.

At 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with New York City under a heat advisory, a gaggle of sailing enthusiasts, dressed in polo shirts and summer dresses, boarded a ferry for Governors Island to watch towering F50 catamarans race along the skyline of Lower Manhattan and in front of the Statue of Liberty.

It was the second day and the finals of the New York Sail Grand Prix, part of SailGP, the growing international sailing competition in which teams, grouped by country, compete in $5 million-dollar boats that race up to 60 miles per hour.

The competition was founded in 2018 by Larry Ellison, the tech billionaire, and Russell Coutts, a five-time America’s Cup Winner, to build a mainstream sailing league. Unlike America’s Cup which occurs roughly every four years, SailGP has events around the globe throughout the year, allowing audiences to follow along.

“It’s this high-adrenaline, high-speed sort of racing product right in front of you,” Mr. Coutts said.

A crowd of spectators sit together on a bunch of stands. Three people hold up white letters that say USA.

Organizers and fans are comparing the competition to Formula 1 racing on the water, which also has billionaire and celebrity backers and flashy backdrops including St. Tropez and Dubai. Now in its fourth season, the number of SailGP teams and events has doubled. The races, filled with Olympic sailors and state-of-the-art catamarans, are broadcast throughout the world and attract millions of viewers, according to organizers.

The sold-out race was held at the tip of Manhattan. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch the race by boat or from Governors Island, a 172-acre island in the New York Harbor. (Tickets started at $85 for the grandstand.)

A private tent on a paved area by the water was reserved for team owners and invited ticket holders. There was sushi and dumplings and a high-tea service catered by The Plaza.

The teams were spread around the lounge, marked by flags. Lindsey Vonn, the Olympic ski racer, is on the board of directors for the team from the United States.

“I love speed and adrenaline, so when the opportunity presented itself it was a no-brainer,” Ms. Vonn said in a text message. She attended the race live on Saturday.

On Sunday, the races started around 1 p.m., prompting many guests to put down their champagne and Aperol spritzes and approach the edge of the water to take in the sailing.

Unlike in Formula 1, where a spectator can only see a short stretch of the track at a time, all of SailGP’s racing happens in a tight area in full-view of the crowd.

The event is a series of three short races (each one lasts about 15 minutes) in which the boats circle the track multiples times, depending on the wind conditions.

For the boat to turn, 32 functions have to be performed by the team in unison. The catamarans are close enough to shore to see the sailors — there are usually six on each boat — in action.

Jennifer Falvey, 63, a real estate agent, had traveled from Woodstock, Vt., for the event after hearing it about it from a friend. “The boats are just so sexy,” she said.

Daniela Forte, who came with her husband from Westport, Conn., was struck by the speed.

“I don’t have a sailing background, and I had never heard of SailGP before this event, but it’s kind of an amazing idea,” she said. “Sailing has always felt like something you had to do, not just something you can watch, but this is amazing.”

An hour and a half after the first race started, the team from New Zealand was declared the winner (a television broadcaster announced: “The Kiwis have conquered Manhattan.”) The top three contenders are now New Zealand, Australia, and Spain — ahead of the season finals in San Francisco in the middle of July.

Then sailors, still wet from the water, filled the lounge for “Apres Sail.” Hundreds of people remained in the private lounge for hours, snacking on fresh plates of pasta and freshly shucked oysters.

Despite the stifling, 90-degree temperatures the party continued until late afternoon. Dance music blared over the loudspeakers, fans mingled with the sailors, and at least one bar ran out of champagne.
