ABOUT BECK:

2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominee and eight-time Grammy-winner Beck has traveled light years from his emergence as a reluctant generational spokesperson when “Loser” exploded into a ubiquitous 1994 smash. Beck’s singular vision has since seen him utilize all manners and eras of music, blazing a path into the future while foraging through the past.

Surfacing just as mainstream and alternative intersected, no small thanks to his 1994 debut Mellow Gold, Beck quickly confounded expectations with subsequent releases including the lo-fi folk of One Foot in the Grave and 1996’s multi-platinum Odelay—which has remained a cultural touchstone for generations.

Beck’s creative evolution has always progressed at an exponential rate. From the atmospherics of 1998’s Mutations and the fluorescent funk of 1999’s Midnite Vultures, the somber reflections of 2002’s Sea Change, 2005’s tour de force Guero and 2006’s sprawling The Information, 2008’s acclaimed Modern Guilt, 2014’s Album of the Year Grammy-winning Morning Phase, the “euphoric blast of experimental pop” (Rolling Stone) that was 2017’s Colors and his 2019 “best in a decade” (People) Hyperspace… No Beck record has ever sounded like its predecessor — though The New York Times notes a consistent thread: “Though Beck’s records through the years have tended toward maximalism, a kind of meticulous sonic gorgeousness, melody remains central to his art.“

Beck is stage name of American singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Beck Hansen, known for his genre blurring, experimental style, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

With the creative juices of his arranger/conductor father David Campbell and mother Bibbe Hansen, who was a regular at Andy Warhol’s Factory and pertinent to the rise of the Fluxus art movement, Beck dropped out of school in 10th grade to busk on the streets and attend poetry slams. After adopting a folk and blues style on the home recording “The Banjo Story”, Beck worked alongside Karl Stephenson to create a collection of songs with folk sensibilities combined with hip-hop beats. The musician’s debut release came with the single “MTV Makes Me Want to Smoke Crack” followed by the 17-track cassette “Golden Feelings” in 1993.

Beck’s move into the musical consciousness however didn’t arrive until the label Bong Load released the 12” single of the timeless hit “Loser”. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with Geffen Records that meant he could released through independent labels, through which he released the 10” “A Western Harvest Field” in 1994. Beck’s debut full-length “Mellow Gold” arrived in March 1994, and shot to success on the back of the single “Loser”. Combining the infectious groove of blues guitar with the hip hop rhythm reminiscent of the Beastie Boys, the single and album became a smash.

In fear of becoming a novelty act, Beck quickly released a pair of LPs “Stereopathetic Soul Manure” and “One Foot In the Grave” in 1994. The minimalist nature of the latter showcased the singer-songwriter’s musical depth, and proved Beck wasn’t another one trick pony. After an extensive period of touring in 1994 and into 1995 including shows on the Lollapalooza tour, Beck enlisted the help of the Beastie Boys’ production team the Dust Brothers to work on his sophomore. “Odelay” appeared in mid-1996 to overwhelming commercial and critical success, earning a Grammy nomination in 1997. The album spawned the singles “Where It’s At”, “Devils Haircut”, and “The New Pollution”, and generated a huge amount of exposure and publicity.

Leaving the cut and paste process of the Dust Brothers’ production style behind, 1998’s “Mutations” was noted for its live, no-doctoring approach. The album once again earned positive reviews and resulted in Beck winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Performance in 1999. Taking influence from the hip hop and R&B act R. Kelly, the singer-songwriter worked alongside bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, to produce his seventh studio album “Midnight Vultures”. The album, released in 1999, aimed to be an upbeat and energetic record that would be enjoyable and fun to play on tour.

The acoustic album “Sea Change” arrived in 2002 as a result of the break-up of Beck's nine-year relationship, followed by the full-length “Guero” in 2005. “Guero” spawned the hits “E-Pro” and “Hell Yes” and led to the remix of the entire album entitled “Guerolito”. Produced by Danger Mouse, Beck released “Modern Guilt” in 2008, which debuted at No. eight on the Billboard 200 and earned favourable reviews. Beck subsequently focused on production and worked alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg, Thurston Moore, and Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. New material arrived in 2012 with the collection of sheet music “Song Reader” followed in 2014 by the album “Morning Phase”, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned Beck three Grammys in 2015 for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Rock Album, and Album of the Year.

Live reviews

Just saw his first headlining show in MSG in NYC. Tickets were a mess bc they kept lowering the prices with secret sales, angering fans who bought the $$$ ones quickly. Cheap seats for ex, went from 49 to 30 to 17 (Only I found the 2 day $17 deal on TM apparently). They wanted to fill the stadium to honor Becks 1st headlining tour to a large arena like Madison Square Garden I guess, bc sales were slow. Only pissed fans off.

I was like 6 when Beck came out, but I guess everyone else was MY AGE (30), bc lot of old farts in the crowd, many of whom sat the whole show, either writhing occasionally or stoic as if watching the ballet. I was up out of my seat dancing like silly string and singing, esp at the end of the set list, which was 80% filler. About 6 famous or fantastically upbeat songs were omitted.... Gamma Ray, Hell Yes, Nausea, Time Bomb, Tropicalia, etc. And he spoke more often than any artist I've ever seen (I've seen at least 100). Also sound quality was low during the first part of the 2 hr show. The encore was fake bc I was already told the show ends at 11, which it did after the encore. And oddly enough, a song that was JUST DONE was REPEATED for the encore, rather than choosing from his extensive catalog.

The highlight of the show was Beck saying that his grandfather emigrated from whatever country to the U.S.... ILLEGALLY, and the crowd roared in support!--me included! That was a big FUCK YOU TRUMP moment, and I was happy to be among that.

Seeing Beck live is by far a must for everyone. Whether you are a diehard fan of this güero or just familiar with "Loser" and other hits, you will surely be entertained by the creativity that Beck often puts into his shows.

While some of my favorite memories are from the last minute, "secret" warm up shows that Beck often performs at small LA clubs like The Echo, it is the tour shows where his production skills match his musical talent. From the large king bed that descended upon LA's Greek Theatre stage during the classic slow jam "Debra" to being accompanied by a very unique male dancer/cowbell instrumentalist at the OC Fairgrounds, a Beck show has it all.

Probably the most memorable show was at The Wiltern where the entire show was re-enacted in real time...on stage...by a full band of marionette puppets.

And as many fans of Beck know, the singer has two sides - mellow ("Sea Change") Beck...and funky whiteboy ("Midnight Vultures") Beck. If you are lucky, you'll get a bit of both when you see him live. In both cases, not only will you get great music but you'll definitely get introduced to Beck and his bandmates' often off-beat and spontaneously creative humor. (He loves to talk about his Hyundai Excel).

A Beck show is not to be missed! Bottles and cans, just clap your hands!

The Kansas City show was amazing, a perfect concert. I've been going to concerts since I was 15 (45 years) and this ranks in my top 2 all time. The band was a perfect fit, the stage was amazing, the visuals added did not detract from music (I was at another show last month in Boston where the visual totally distracted from the music). I have not seen Beck before despite highly ranking him, he was a bucket list artist. I was a little surprised by his comfort on stage, goofy but legitimate cool, relaxed in charge but allowed the band to do their thing. You realize the expansive genre's he crosses and it's amazing. At my age, it's a challenge for a band to get me off my feet but I was dancing entire concert. It was the happiest concert I've been to in quite some time. Strangely maybe because he crosses so many genres he remains vastly underappreciated. idiots like Kanye West don't seem to see the genius. He traces his lineage during the show, "I wanna take you higher" (Sly Stone), covered Rasberry Beret (Prince) first few bars of Strawberry Field (Beatles) that's Beck. Dude improved 1 of his songs to guitar of More than a Feeling then followed with Hank Williams cover and into I'm So Free- cmon who else can do that credibly? I want to go again tonight that's how good it was.

As darkness descended on Queens’ historic Forest Hills stadium Beck greeted a crowd still buzzing over the sweat-soaked performance art from Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant. But with cool self-assurance Beck and his six-piece backing band launched into “Loser” and the audience focus was completely reset. Hard to believe this genre-shifting rock elf from LA is 49 years old, because he still looks and moves like a twenty-something. His playlist leaned heavily on the albums “Colors”, “Guero”, and “Odelay”. He worked from a large physical set up, including a two-tiered stage with rear video panel. Pyrotechnics were subordinate to the music, except for large white and silver ballon balls that were released into the audience. Unfortunately, the wind was blowing towards the stage and the balloons kept bumping into the musicians, creating a minor distraction from an otherwise satisfying set from this immensely talented musician.

For the last 20 years, I've always been both aware of Beck and impressed with the variety of his work, but wouldn't consider myself a big fan. Of course I can sing along with songs like Loser and Where It's At, but I'd never seen him before in concert. I figure Beck will go down as one of the true great artists of my generation so I figured it would be worthwhile to check him out in concert. I really am enjoying his new album and in particular the single Blue Moon so I decided to attend his show in Raleigh. It was a fantastic show, full of energy on a hot and sweaty summer night in an outdoor amphitheater. Beck paraded out a tour de force through his 20 year career and kept the crowd singing, dancing, and sweating all night.

I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed this show, and his excellent backing band. I'll definitely see Beck again, and won't wait another 20 years to do it.

Beck was great. Fun, engaging, humorous, and, of course, more talented than just about anyone out there. I will always see him as much as I can.

Red Rocks, on the other hand, used to be the greatest venue in the world, but all the Colorado potheads are ruining it fast. We took four kids and they were miserable. The smoke was nonstop. The Red Rocks staff do not enforce their own rules. They completely ignore what’s going on in the crowd. And the sound was so loud that even with earplugs it was painful. From what I hear that’s been true of more and more shows at Red Rocks this year, so I’m not sure if that’s a venue thing or an artist thing. Either way, it’s just not necessary to be that loud.

This review in no way reflects poorly on Beck. This was the third tome I’ve seen him and he’s always fantastic. But Colorado needs to take a f-Ing break with all the smoking.

Secund time we've seen Beck and he was awesome and entertaining yet again-maybe even surpassing himself. Aligned with incredible musicians and this time a backing chorus with 2 women and a dude who also played various instruments (guitar, shoulder strap keyboard, mandolin/tambourine/etc., ) and danced in an elevated stage behind the front band-it had a throwback quality and was very entertaining. And as usual Beck excels art his solo breakout/improv/cover session which makes every performance unique regardless of playlist repetition. Beck is one of the hardest working acts out there (as is the Foo Fighters, whom we saw a week before!)

Absolutely perfect! Enjoyed every second of it from start to finish! Wouldn't hesitate to see the exact same show again!! Only two minor complaints:

1: I wish the concert had been longer, but a 100 minutes is pretty solid (I'm just super greedy)

2: I wish he had played more morning phase stuff (Waking Light and Blue Moon, would both had been welcome additions!) I also really wish he would have played Heavens Ladder (but that might be too much to ask if you're catering to less hardcore fans)

All in all I loved it and hope he'll do a full tour soon! (Morning Phade tour!? Pleeeease!!!)

Beck was a ton of fun! It is worth mentioning that he plays a lot of the new songs so if you hate the new album, this might not be the tour for you. That being said, if you want a rollicking good time, you gotta see Beck. He is so comfortable on stage he could almost be accused of being too loose, but it really does feel like hanging out with him. He worked in 3 songs from Midnite Vultures so there are plenty of treats for diehard fans but he will still play the hits. And the acoustic interlude featuring songs from Morning Phase and Sea Change will of course be my favorite part.

andy-morgan-3’s profile image

Amazing!! It's got to be Red Rocks that make artists want to try things at concerts. Getting the audience involved in making a song on the spot is something I've seen several artist do at Red Rocks now. Anyways, the band was spot on. He played a ton of classics, starting the show off with 'Devils Haircu'. A couple acoustic hits and just two new songs 'Dreams' and 'Wow'. Have the second half of the show with Preservation Hall Jazz Band added. A great show, I would give it an 8/10

Beck and Phoenix

From the Technicolor merch to the staging to the setlist, everything about Phoenix and Beck ‘s joint headlining Summer Odyssey Tour was breezy during a New York stop at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. The strictly fun vibe was best illustrated by the featherweight “Odyssey,” a new tune the two acts released this year to commemorate the trek (sample lyrics: “We’ll fall into the ocean / I’ll be there / On an odyssey in the sun”).

Oilers fans book the trip of a lifetime on charter plane to see Game 7 in Florida Back to video

But the last-minute charter flight he got off the ground from Edmonton to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday, with a pit stop in Kansas City to empty the toilets and fill up with fuel, will be something he recounts over and over.

Especially if the Oilers put the capper on this impulsive venture by beating the Florida Panthers on Monday night in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final.

Beck, a forty-something lifelong Oilers fan who has season tickets at Rogers Place, decided on Thursday, the day before Game 6, that not only would there be a Game 7, but he and a bunch of co-workers and old friends — as well as some strangers who would become fast friends — were going to be in Amerant Bank Arena for that deciding tilt.

“We pulled the trigger on Thursday. It was a ballsy move, very bold,” he said.

He arranged a charter flight through North Cariboo Air in Edmonton. The company just happened to have an Avro RJ100 available. With room for 100 passengers and a range of 2,465 kilometres, it seemed perfect for the job. Beck just had to fill it.

“So I called Jason Gregor from the Gregor (radio) show and said ‘Gregor, I need your help.’ He said don’t worry Beck, it will sell out. He announced it and within half an hour we had all our good buddies and about 60 other people all signed up and we booked the plane within half an hour.”

Ninety-five passengers paid about $2,540 each to cover the cost of the plane, which ran to about $241,000.

“When the e-mail chain started, I picked the guys who wanted the most seats, to make my life easier as I had to navigate this whole thing,” Beck said. “So yeah, there are a couple companies involved.”

They had themselves quite a party on the way down.

“It was basically an all-inclusive,” Beck said with a laugh.

The operations manager for HML Landscape Construction and Design said he couldn’t be happier with how fast everything came together and how the hockey trip of a lifetime was progressing on Monday.

“This is the best day of my life,” he said from the Four Seasons Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. “I have never felt so good. We had the whole pool chanting ‘Go Oilers, Go,’ and even the kids were screaming in the pool there at the Four Seasons. Even Daryl was laughing. It was good. Today is a big day for everybody.”

Daryl would be Edmonton Oilers owner Daryl Katz, who just happened to be sitting next to Beck at the pool.

“Right beside us, and we BS’ed with him,” Beck said. “My first question to him, I was so nervous, I said ‘you going to the game tonight?’ He was like, what do you think? No joke. I was so nervous. What are the chances I’m sitting beside this guy, who owns the Oilers? It was the coolest thing in the world.”

All 95 charter passengers have arranged tickets for the game, some in luxury suites, others in the seats. They will head to the game early in a chartered bus and they don’t plan on returning to their hotel rooms. The return flight to Edmonton is scheduled to leave on the same plane at 8 a.m. Tuesday from the airport in Fort Lauderdale.

“So as of now none of us are going to sleep tonight.”

And they are hoping to celebrate all the way home.

“I have 94 of the best friends I have ever met in my life,” Beck said. “I met some really cool, successful, awesome people from all over Alberta. It’s been awesome.”

Dingler's breakout season is finally here

Jason Beck

This story was excerpted from Jason Beck’s Tigers Beat newsletter. To read the full newsletter, click here . And subscribe to get it regularly in your inbox.

DETROIT -- Dillon Dingler was seemingly stuck in a rut a year and a half ago at Double-A Erie. He wasn't struggling, but he also wasn't graduating. That's when an evaluator who had watched him provided some words of advice: It can take time for catchers to develop.

For every Adley Rutschman or Cal Raleigh, who seemingly sped through the farm system, there’s a J.T. Realmuto -- who played 438 Minor League games before sticking in the Majors -- or a Jonah Heim -- who played 517 Minor League games across three organizations before making it with Texas. Korey Lee had 338 Minor League games before sticking with the White Sox this year.

Dingler, the Tigers’ No. 12 prospect , enters Tuesday with 331 games across four Minor League seasons, and the way he has played in 50 games for Triple-A Toledo this season has finally put Detroit in sight.

His 3-for-5, two-homer, seven-RBI performance in the Mud Hens’ 20-9 win at St. Paul on Sunday improved his slash line to .287/.350/.508 with 10 doubles, 10 homers, 35 RBIs and a 116 wRC+. Other Tigers prospects might have better production, such as Toledo teammate and No. 3 prospect Jace Jung -- who's batting .270/.390/.500 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs -- but none play as premium of a position as Dingler, who has strengthened his status as Detroit's catcher of the future.

While Dingler’s defense has always been the strength of his game, his offense has been the constant question. He had dominant stretches in past years, but he struggled to maintain success, either due to health, scouting or simply the physical and mental toll of catching regularly and handling a pitching staff.

This year, however, has been Dingler's most consistent stretch of production. While his .980 OPS in May clearly stood out, he has followed it up with an .866 OPS in June. Even Dingler's opening month, his weakest period, was anything but a skid, as he ended April with a .725 OPS.

Dingler’s power has been accompanied by improved discipline. His 19.9 percent strikeout rate is on track to be his best for a pro season by far, according to FanGraphs.

He has cut his swing rate outside the strike zone from 33.8 percent in his late-season stint in Toledo last year to 28.4 percent over a similar sample size this season. His in-zone swing rate has ticked up from 67.7 to 70.8 percent.

Dingler's 26.9 percent line-drive rate is on track to be the best of his pro career, while his ground-ball rate has dropped from 46.9 to 35.2 percent. His average exit velocity has also jumped from 90.7 to 91.7 miles per hour, according to Statcast.

Some of that might be a product of working with automated balls and strikes in Triple-A.

“It’s a step for hitting,” Dingler said in Spring Training. “Because the pitch that you know that’s off the plate is called a ball. You can hunt in your area and try to get off a good swing.”

There’s still room for improvement. While Dingler is batting just .188 off four-seam fastballs, his 45.9 percent hard-hit rate and expected batting average of .299 based on exit velocity and launch angle suggest he can raise that.

Still, he has done what he talked about going into the season.

“If I take care of my business and string together the type of months that I think that I’m capable of, I think good things will happen,” Dingler said. “I just have to take care of everything I can control and put the best product of myself out there as possible.”

Those good things could happen later this summer. The Tigers could use next month’s Trade Deadline as a chance to gauge the market on Carson Kelly, who’s on track for free agency at season’s end and could serve as a valuable backup or platoon catcher for a contender. That would open the door for Dingler, who’s already on Detroit’s 40-man roster.

Toronto summer tourism still recovering as international travel lags

New report says 2023 saw tourism reach close to pre-pandemic numbers, but more growth needed this summer.

beck tour toronto

Social Sharing

Toronto's tourism industry is still in post-pandemic recovery and projecting how the season will look is difficult even as summer officially kicks off, a leading tourism association says.

Factors like an affordability crisis are causing travellers to book trips with less notice than they used to, making predictions difficult, according to Destination Toronto, an industry association funded in part by the city.

While people used to book trips months in advance, Destination Toronto's CEO Andrew Weir says they're now waiting until they have greater certainty of their financial situation.

One positive is the city is seeing lots of travel from within the country, but after the pandemic decimated tourism, international travel still isn't where it was, says Weir.

"A lot of our major overseas international markets are still not all the way back," he said, adding travel from the United States is also at about three quarters of what it was.

"Toronto really is dependent on all of those engines firing at full strength and when only some of them are, then it leaves some gaps."

But things have been trending in the right direction. A report released by the Destination Toronto earlier this month said visitor volume in the city in 2023 reached within five per cent of pre-pandemic 2019 levels, while visitor spending was slightly higher than 2019. The higher dollar amount in 2023 was driven up by inflation, the report notes.

Year-over-year visitor growth was about five per cent through the first fourth months of 2024, but Weir says it's been flat through May and June so far.

A man in a suit against a black background.

"Flat is not good right now because we're still in recovery mode. We need to be in growth mode," Weir said.

In particular, Toronto isn't seeing as many travellers from China as it used to, he says. In 2019, Toronto saw more than 300,000 Chinese visitors, but is now seeing only a quarter of that.

Weir believes the dip in Chinese travellers can partially be blamed on diplomatic tensions between Canada and the country.

Hotels say business is good, tour guides see slump

On top of that, fewer people are booking walking and cycling tours than last year, says Jason Kucherawy, president of the Tourist Guide Association of Toronto.

"Trends in travel change. I think people are looking for more personalized experiences. They're looking for ways to not feel so much like a tourist," he said.

"A lot more people are just going to cities and relying on Google to get them around and online apps to give them information. But what they're missing out on is that actual connection, the person-to-person connection."

People walk down the middle of the street in front of the main TIFF theatre

On the hospitality side, things are looking better, according to the Greater Toronto Hotel Association.

Sara Anghel, the association's CEO, said business travel has been lagging a bit but she's confident her industry will see growth this summer with Canada Day coming up, the Canadian National Exhibition in August and the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Looking further ahead, there's also something happening in November that should bring lots of business for hotels: Taylor Swift's the Eras tour.

She said rooms may be hard to find downtown for that event, but people should take advantage of all the hotels in surrounding areas like Markham or Mississauga.

"We have many, many hotels connected to our public transit," she said.

Operators outside Toronto struggling

In other parts of the province, tourism operators are still struggling, according to the Ontario Chamber of Commerce.

Claudia Dessanti, the chamber's director of policy, says coming out of the pandemic, the expectation was the industry province-wide wouldn't recover until 2025 and that still looks to be the case.

"Inflation is a serious concern because the costs for [tourism] operators are going up, but the spending capacity of visitors and the economy is not keeping up," she said. "Last year we did see an uptick in spending, but still the costs are outpacing that.

 • Ontario's tourism sector won't fully recover from pandemic until 2025, report says
 • Downtown Toronto's pandemic recovery lags behind other cities, data shows

Another challenge is that the rebound of economic activity has mostly been concentrated to the larger cities, leaving smaller places struggling, she says.

"Ontario is such a diverse province, one thing that we want to always keep front of mind is that the vibrancy of the smaller and rural communities in the province sometimes gets lost in the conversation."

San Francisco Giants Receive Injury Updates on Several Players

 • San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants have been bitten by the injury bug on what seems to have been a consistent basis all season. The team currently has seven pitchers on the injured list and working their way back, as well as two everyday position players. On Monday, San Francisco provided updates on a long list of players.

One of the biggest additions the Giants have been waiting for is Robbie Ray. He underwent Tommy John surgery that prematurely ended his 2023 season with the Seattle Mariners , and was subsequently acquired by the Giants during the offseason.

Three years removed from winning the AL Cy Young with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ray has pitched just one full season, which was 2022. With a 3.71 ERA and 10.1 K/9, the lefty continued to be who he always was after winning his first Cy Young. Then, after just one bad start in 2023, he has been working his way back all season.

Ray recently made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento, where he had a good outing. In 2.1 innings, he sat 93 with the fastball and allowed just one hit while striking out two and walking one. Since the Giants traded for him, the goal has been to get him back around the All-Star break, and he appears to be on track for that.

With plenty of pitchers on the IL, Ray wasn't the only one to receive and update on how his injury is going. Tristan Beck, who has also not thrown a pitch this season, is "continuing his rehab." A pretty vague update, but Beck's injury isn't the normal UCL or shoulder affliction. The 28-year-old had surgery to remove an aneurysm in his arm.

Upon Beck's return, he will likely be pitching from the bullpen due to the San Francisco rotation being crowded.

Another pitcher in his sophomore season, Keaton Winn was recently placed on the 15-day IL on Saturday. On Monday, it was revealed that an MRI showed no structural damage, but he won't throw for a week due to a nerve injury in his arm. Winn has posted a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts.

Alex Cobb underwent hip surgery prior to the season and during his rehab suffered setbacks due to shoulder soreness. However, he is now getting healthy and will throw a live batting practice session in Arizona on Tuesday. After back-to-back breakout seasons with the Giants, he has earned a rotation spot. It will be interesting to see how the Giants divvy up starts, especially when all of them have returned.

One pitcher he will be competing with for innings is rookie Kyle Harrison. The lefty entered the season as the best left-handed pitching prospect in baseball and has provided 77.1 innings of league average ball. He was placed on the 15-day IL on June 13 and will throw off a mound on Tuesday.

To round out the pitchers, another offseason acquisition is making his way back. Ethan Small was purchased from the Milwaukee Brewers in February, but has missed the entire season due to an oblique strain. Small has thrown 10.1 Major League innings with 10 walks and 13 strikeouts, but has a career 3.14 ERA and 10.8 K/9 in the minors.

Finally, it seems the Giants will be getting their first baseman back soon. LaMonte Wade Jr. is on his rehab assignment with Sacramento, and will be starting in the field on Tuesday and Wednesday. The 30-year-old has already begun his rehab at the plate, going 0-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored. Before going down, Wade had a .470 on-base percentage, so he will be an important addition at the top of the lineup.

After making lots of offseason acquistions, the Giants have seen players drop like flies throughout the first half. Now, reinforcements are on the way in the rotation, and they will be getting arguably their best hitter back.

OMAHA, NE - JUNE 24: Pitcher Aaron Combs #28 of the Tennessee Volunteers celebrates with catcher Cal Stark #10 after defeating the Texas A&M Aggies to win the National Championship at the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on June 24, 2024 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska. OMAHA, Neb. — Zander Sechrist nibbled and located, curveballing and frustrating the Texas A&M Aggies, the joker-turned-ace finishing his Tennessee Volunteers career with a staggering flourish.

Christian Moore lined a home run to left to open the scoring. Dylan Dreiling launched one high and just out to right to finish the Aggies, or so it seemed. Hunter Ensley turned ballet-dancing running back for a split second to avoid a tag and score what turned out to be a necessary and winning run. The best lineup in college baseball finally proved too much in Monday’s winner-take-all game for the national championship at Charles Schwab Field, and veteran relievers Nate Snead and Kirby Connell and Aaron Combs made Sechrist’s work stand in the face of Texas A&M’s valiant late run.

When Combs struck out Ted Burton swinging on a darting slider at 9:32 p.m. Monday after the final 3 hours and 22 minutes of college baseball in 2024, the first SEC team to win 60 games in a season fell all over itself — as emphatically as it had picked itself up to meet pressure and make history on the final two days of its season. A 9-5 loss to the Aggies in the first game of the Men’s College World Series finals made way for a 4-1 comeback Sunday and ultimately tense 6-5 title clincher Monday, the biggest game and win in program history.

In that moment of joy, a person who has stuck it out with this program as faithfully as anyone on the planet — play-by-play announcer John Wilkerson, wrapping his 36th season — summed it up as such on the Vol Radio Network: “The climb is complete! They have reached the summit! The Volunteers are the very best in college baseball, and the championship flag has been planted in Rocky Top!”

Moments after that, college coach championship celebrations were redefined in Omaha. The toast of Rocky Top, Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello, took the usual sports drink soaking (Sechrist got him good), and was all over the field hugging and yelling, yelling and hugging. But then he went full sprint from the infield, into left field, vaulted off the tarp and went crowd surfing like a rock star.

Which rock star?

“I think Stone Temple Pilots,” he said. “And I promise I don’t do drugs, but that was my first rock concert right there.”

Vitello was still performing encores nearly an hour after the final pitch, taking every picture, signing every autograph, slapping every hand he could find from orange-draped remainders of a crowd of 24,685. The postgame spoke sufficiently to the meaning of the game.

“There was a lot of hunger and a lot of determination to get this done,” Moore said after his last game as a Vol, featuring that 34th home run to add to his program record. “And we did it, you know? It’s a beautiful thing. It’s a beautiful thing and I just want to enjoy it. I’m not gonna stop thinking about it. … I’ve cried maybe six times. Man, we’ve worked so hard for this moment.”

This was more than Tennessee’s first baseball national championship. This was more than the school’s first natty since the 2009 women’s indoor track and field team and the first among revenue-producing sports since Pat Summitt and Candace Parker won it all in 2008. This was more than the state of Tennessee’s first major championship in five years — rival Vanderbilt getting it done on the same field.

And it was more than the last box checked for Vitello in a program turnaround so dramatic, he should soon be paid as much as anyone who coaches this game at the college level (that was already close to assured, but Texas firing its coach and starting a search Monday should at least mean another car or country club membership for him).

This was legend status certification of a special group of players. This was long-delayed gratification for the masses of humanity who make up Tennessee fandom.

This team is loaded with talent, especially at the plate, finishing with the second-most home runs in college baseball history (184). A bunch of these guys will soon be drafted and some are destined to make an impact in the majors. Vitello’s program takes advantage of UT resources and the portal to field powerhouse teams, and it will continue to do so.

But it’s easy to see there’s more than that to this group. Collections of talent can win a lot of games, but it takes more than that to win championships.

“No better team to win for the University of Tennessee than a bunch of guys who were truly the definition of a team, and no better play for our program than (getting) the winning run on that slide, from a guy that’s just built with a ton of grit,” Vitello said of Ensley, who shares that description with Drew Beam, Blake Burke, Kavares Tears, Cal Stark and many others. “It’s a great example of how this group got things done.”

Sechrist and Connell are the heart of this fun-loving bunch, just as Drew Gilbert and Jordan Beck set the tone for the viciously competitive, uber-talented 2022 team that embraced villain status in the sport. That No. 1 overall seed’s shocking failure to reach Omaha, cheered loudly around the sport, ended up a prologue to this No. 1 overall seed becoming the first since Miami in 1999 to win it all.

Sechrist and Connell, hilarious dudes who pitched a little bit then, just played enormous roles in a run to a championship. Sechrist got the win Monday to cap an astounding run to finish his career — five earned runs allowed in 34 2/3 innings in his last six starts, all UT wins, including the Knoxville Super Regional clincher and an Omaha decision over Florida State.

“He does everything for this program, man,” Moore said of Sechrist. “He’s such a great guy and I love to see him in that moment, doing what he does best. He’s so funky, and I don’t know what it is but it works.”

Sechrist and Connell may be hilarious — Sechrist saw Tennessee AD Danny White in the back of the postgame news conference and urged him to give Vitello a “lifetime contract” — but they got serious amid the revelry on the field when asked about each other.

Said Sechrist: “I don’t know that I can really put that, or put (Connell), into words right now.”

Said Connell: “A lot of people didn’t believe in Zander. But this team did the whole way.”

You have officially entered, the Zander Zone. 📺 https://t.co/57mSIippEi (ESPN) #GBO // #OTH // #MCWS // #BeatTAMU pic.twitter.com/fyjnTjrLg5 — Tennessee Baseball (@Vol_Baseball) June 25, 2024

Vitello had a poignant moment, too, with his father, Greg Vitello, who coached him growing up in St. Louis and said Monday was “like I died and went to heaven.”

“Like you walked out of the cornfield,” he said, “and there it is.”

What it’s all about. pic.twitter.com/PLIs1mxVNH — Tennessee Baseball (@Vol_Baseball) June 25, 2024

That’s a reference to the 1989 Kevin Costner movie on baseball and fathers and sons, “Field of Dreams,” and Greg Vitello followed it up with a few minutes of chatting about his son with reporters. Then he looked to his right, saw a familiar face and said: “I think I’m gonna go say hi to Peyton.”

That’s Peyton Manning, the most famous of Vols, who took in the game with Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel , Tennessee men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes and country music star Morgan Wallen. Which brings us to Tennessee fans.

They clearly don’t have a Manning curse to worry about anymore, and now they don’t have to long for one of their teams with the potential for greatness to fulfill it. Heupel and Barnes have had teams like that in recent years that came up short, and they both have teams good enough for national aspirations in the months ahead.

Now that Tennessee fans have a champion, maybe it will be easier to appreciate what it means to knock on the door consistently, and how much more common that is at UT now than it was just a few years ago. That’s what Manning was talking about as he thought back to the heartbreak of the 2022 baseball team.

“I’d rather have my heart ripped out because it means you’re close,” Manning said. “And we’ve had our hearts ripped out.”

Now they’re living in the good old days, a championship flag planted and a parade to come on Rocky Top.
