Travel Industry Brand Ambassador Programs

Traveling experiences - brand ambassadors

Travel brand ambassador programs reward a company’s customers or non-staff representatives with perks, such as discounts, upgrades and other rewards, for representing the brand in essential, public ways. Brand ambassador marketing cultivates long-term company/influencer relationships by benefiting both parties. We are firm believers that just about can brand can benefit from a well-managed ambassador program .

Today, we are focusing on travel as so many people are planning post-pandemic trips or visiting their loved ones for the holidays. If you are planning to launch a brand ambassador program, strengthen the one you have, or join one yourself, you should study some successful examples. Remember, your program can and should be as unique as your company, and our platform streamlines the management process.

Airbnb Ambassador Program

Airbnb, the online marketplace for vacation rentals and homestays, has created a sophisticated ambassador program that aptly rewards those accepted into their program. Of course, you need to be a successful host in your own right before you apply to the ambassador program. You must also strongly believe in the company’s methods. If you are a devoted Airbnb host who believes they can help others begin hosting, you should apply for the position on the company’s website.

The company only names you an ambassador if they consider you an exceptional host. If you are accepted as an ambassador, aka a Superhost, you will refer people to the program whom you think would make great hosts. You would then guide them through the process and help them as they host their first guests. The company will then pay you for every new host you refer. You’ll earn more per referral this way than you would outside of the ambassador program. As an added incentive to prospective hosts, your referrals also get a cash reward when they begin hosting. The program attracts and rewards excellence and makes hosting even more lucrative than it already is.

EF Ultimate Break Ambassador Program

Ambassador exploring in Bangkok roads

EF has been a mainstay of the educational travel business for over half a century. In fact, several generations of your family may have taken part in these exciting and culturally rich tours. But you don’t have to be a student to be a part of the EF experience. You can apply to be an ambassador.

EF rewards its ambassadors with exciting world travel opportunities while making it easier for their friends or students to travel as well. The company looks for certain criteria in their ambassadors. It targets 18-29-year-old people who love to travel and who want to spread the word about EF trips. Former student travelers are ideal candidates, but others can participate as well.  You should be the person in your group that others turn to for travel advice and who is an expert at using social media if you are interested in applying.

The rewards are excellent, and travel is the best perk. Earning a free trip is straightforward. People who book their trips while using your unique promo code will get a $100 discount. When 15 people have booked using this code, you will earn your free travel experience.

You can also earn other rewards, including a dedicated EF Ultimate Break Support squad, extra promotion of your social media posts and a chance at exclusive Ambassador Trips at special discounted prices. This ambassador program is one of the best ways to travel to exotic locations on someone else’s dime. You can enjoy yourself while helping educate students about the world.

Wandr Ambassador Program

Wandr is a travel app company that lets travelers share their past itineraries through photos. Users can then literally follow in each other’s footsteps and share in the Wandr community. Once you download the app, you import the trip photos you want to share to an interactive map . Wandr then creates an itinerary that shows the route you took and how long you spent at each stop. Community members who like the look of your trip and save it and plan their own adventure. You can also look at other posted itineraries and add them to your Wandrlist. Members give each other advice about what to expect at each stop, which enriches the travel experience.

The company looks for Ambassadors who are experienced travelers and have already created quality content. To join the program, you have to fill out an application and then wait for an invitation to their private Facebook community. Once you’ve been accepted, you will have chances to earn money for doing what you’ve been doing for free: traveling and sharing your experiences.  The company also pays for travel through third-party vendors and helps you establish paid relationships with their trusted partners. You can also create and sell itineraries on the app.

How travel brand Béis was able to grow during a pandemic

beis travel ambassador

When the coronavirus pandemic hit in 2020, DTC luggage startups were among the hardest-hit brands.

Béis, founded by actress Shay Mitchell, launched in 2018 and has since quadrupled its business. Despite the pandemic, the company found ways to grow. Like other luggage brands , Béis stayed afloat by pivoting its product assortment and tweaking marketing campaigns.

Being an influencer-owned and operated brand gives Béis an edge in areas like building brand awareness, given Mitchell’s built-in audience of over 30 million social followers. However, scaling the company in a couple of years also comes with several challenges, like balancing merchandising and navigating fluctuating demand during the coronavirus.

At the Modern Retail DTC Summit — held in New Orleans this week — Béis president Adeela Hussain Johnson and vp of brands and creative Liz Money discussed the startup’s early-stage growing pains.

‘We didn’t want to be Away’

As a brand launched by a celebrity influencer, Béis tried to tap a different customer segment within the DTC luggage market, said Hussain Johnson. “Shay [Mitchell] was known for her ‘Shaycations’ on YouTube, so people trusted her expertise in this area,” she explained.

Hussain Johnson added that when the company was founded in 2018, buying luggage online was still a novelty. “Brands like Away paved the way [for] creating a DTC channel for this category,” she explained. Béis didn’t want to be utilitarian, and instead targeted a fashion and price-conscious audience.

When the pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020, Béis was still a nimble company at less than $20 million in revenue. Being an aspirational, travel-geared brand that saw tourism ground to a halt overnight “was scary,” Hussain Johnson said.

“We scrapped our upcoming assortment, and pulled back heavily on core travel SKUs and repurposed dollars on our core products,” she said – such as a hands-free bag solution for going on walks or socially-distanced gatherings.

Cut to today, Hussain Johnson said that Béis has bigger focus on day-to-day bags that stay true to the brand’s highly functional and well-designed ethos. While Hussain Johnson said the Béis customer loves newness, “we now think about seasonal items that drive buzz.” This is in contrast to when Béis was a younger brand and tried to consistently launch new SKUs every six to eight weeks.

As a company scales, constant newness isn’t viable, said Hussain Johnson. “The operations and supply chain can’t withstand it,” she said. For instance, retail partners like Nordstrom and Revolve require large volume fulfillment, so we have to be more strategic. “We can’t move the ship as fast anymore,” she said.

Adjusting marketing to accommodate changing habits

When the pandemic hit, “we completely renovated our marketing,” said Money, Béis’ vp of brands and creative. In the past two years, the company has ventured into different categories, such as baby products and commuter-friendly bags. In turn, Béis’ marketing material became more focused on day-to-day use and less so on vacations. This was a departure from its earlier jet-setting social media and paid advertising.

The inflection point also highlighted the pros and cons to a celebrity founder’s business involvement, said Money. The trick is to utilize their role in effective ways. While Mitchell is currently hands-on in the product design and marketing campaign approvals, Money said the biggest challenge is for Béis is how to make the brand live past Mitchell, especially as Béis tries to reach customers in new channels who may not be as familiar with the actress.

Béis recently began using other influencers and models, instead of solely Mitchell herself, as a way to test out how that plays to the Béis audience. The company is also set to test more advertising channels this year, such as connected TV, podcasts and direct mail.

The Strategy Behind Shay Mitchell’s Travel Brand Béis

Actress Shay Mitchell sits among two olive-coloured suitcases and weekender bag from her brand Béis.

Actress, entrepreneur and executive producer Shay Mitchell launched her lifestyle and travel brand Béis in October 2018 with the vision of catering to an on-the-go lifestyle by creating bags, luggage and travel accessories she could not find in the market. In just five years, the brand is nearing $200 million in profitable gross revenue by the end of 2023.

This summer, the brand hosted a tour of pop-ups, experimenting with physical retail and in-store creative marketing moments in three North American cities and will be doing a holiday pop-up in New York with Shopify.

“We have an exceptionally high return customer rate, far higher than what is typical in our category,” Béis president, Adeela Hussain Johnson, tells BoF. “As we look to the future, we will continue to engage with our current consumers in a way that builds loyalty and trust while investing meaningfully in brand building and awareness-driving initiatives. [...] Our objectives as an organisation are to maintain the momentum of our growth trajectory, but to do so responsibly and in a way that is both sustainable and scalable, long-term.”

Since its launch, Béis has built a significant direct-to-consumer e-commerce offering, with the majority of traffic to Béis’ website primarily driven by growth within paid search, paid social and affiliate marketing, supported by Mitchell’s 37 million-strong follower base. Béis works with retail partners — Nordstrom , Revolve , Bloomingdale’s and, most recently, Canada’s Indigo — to diversify their consumer reach.

“DTC will continue to be the lion’s share of our business, as we are a digitally native brand and we intend that to continue. However, we have learned through our pop-ups in the last two years that our consumer does love IRL experiences and interacting with our brand through the brick-and-mortar channel. So, we will continue to learn and expand that channel as it makes sense for different categories within our portfolio,” adds Hussain Johnson.

The pop-up tour is one strand of the brand’s exploration of expanded marketing arenas, alongside the likes of billboard advertising and major brand partnerships, such as its collaboration with Mattel and Barbie The Movie around the launch of the Greta Gerwig blockbuster. Béis is also working with innovative materials, exploring the likes of cactus leather in its Premium Collection, which launched on November 8. Product lines have also expanded to include lines for travelling parents and their children, as well as baby and pet bags.

“We are investing significantly in R&D and testing to understand how we can continue to improve and expand our portfolio with materials that allow us to achieve durable, long-lasting products,” says Hussain Johnson. “Though the majority of our business is in our classics, which are always around, we recognise that we do drop seasonal collections and not everyone needs 10 weekenders. So, we are in the process of exploring how we can offer consumers ways to give their bags and accessories a second life.”

Now, BoF sits down with the brand’s founder Shay Mitchell to learn more about her strategic vision for the future of the brand.

Béis founder Shay Mitchell in a Béis campaign for the brand's anniversary.

How do you respond to evolving consumer needs and expectations?

We have an analytics department that gathers all data for the brand. I also gather feedback from my friends, family and my assistant. She will sit in on design meetings and I will ask her: “Would you carry this?” It may seem small but we are a consumer feedback-driven brand, so in addition to hard data, I’m always collecting my own feedback from my immediate circle to better understand how they shop.

We’re still a small enough brand to be nimble. For example, when Covid-19 hit, we had a whole line-up of suitcases that were about to be rolled out, but we paused the drop and reassessed. We make bags for people on-the-go, so with the world drastically changing, we asked ourselves “what are people still going to be doing?” They’re going to be going to markets, to parks, beaches, to the grocery store, so we designed for that. We are not just designing for long-haul, plane travel — whether you’re going on a walk, to the gym, to the grocery store or to work, we have a product for you to make it easier.

It’s also about being able to pick up on cultural moments quickly and what makes us so good at this is our team, whose eyes and ears are always open. We can quickly react to trends or feedback that are relevant, in order stay fresh in the content and product we develop.

How do you test out new category and product ideas?

We create what I call “energy drops”, which is when we try something new and share a smaller run with our consumer. It’s a way to play with ideas and collect feedback and insight from the consumer as to what it is that they like about it, what we can improve upon and what should become a core offering. It’s a nice way to test the waters without having a full-on commitment because we’re not buying heavily into those drops.

We are also starting to do more collaborations for energy drops and those projects offer learnings, too. For example, when we dropped the Barbie The Movie collaboration, some people loved the colour and others loved the glossy finish. They said, “You should do this [finish] for beige and black.” I pocketed that feedback and thought, “Cool. Now I know.”

The first time we did a collab was with the model Elsa Hosk. That process was different because we were not just offering existing bags in new fabrications but designing new bags and prints for a Baby line. It was interesting to get her perspective on what she would design. We had hits and misses on that one, but we played around with print, we played around with the fabric and we created something that Béis had never done before.

Béis founder Shay Mitchell dressed in a pink suit dress and hat, holds a pink Béis wallet standing in front of a pink convertible car, in a campaign for the Béis and Mattel 'Barbie Pink' colourway collaboration in May 2023.

How has community feedback guided your design approach?

We have a two-way conversation with our audience. I will post from design meetings and have our community weigh in on colourways or patterns. We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes. We test our bags through the design process and we continue to refine them even once they are on the market.

One of the things we have learnt is that there are people that want to pay a higher price point for a different kind of material, while others will say: “We love this bag. We just wish you could do a more basic, simpler version of it.” All of this feedback helps inform our approach. So, we have our core line, which we have had from the beginning. Then we came out with the Béis-ics, a more simplified design for a Gen-Z consumer at more of an entry price point.

We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes.

Then, this November, we dropped our Premium collection, which offers existing core bag silhouettes in cactus leather fabrications, with elevated design elements. This collection is at a new price point for us. We wanted to design with a more sustainable fabric that looks and feels more premium. I’m curious to see how it is received.

This evolution of various categories at different price points came from consumer feedback. I love the feedback our consumers share. With the help of my team, when we drop a new product, we are keeping our eyes peeled for feedback — and this feedback loop helps us learn for next time. It’s a two-way street that we really value.

Béis founder Shay Mitchell standing in the lobby-style pop up store for Béis in Los Angeles.

How has the Béis brand and your vision for it evolved?

Béis started when I drew up my ideal travel bag on a cocktail napkin while on an airplane, with all the features I had mentally taken notes of over the years, like a key leash or a strap to attach onto your suitcase. With those ideals in mind, we started with our weekenders and our luggage.

Then, when I was pregnant, I needed a diaper bag, so we came out with our baby line. We also created a backpack with a rollout changing pad because sometimes, bathroom facilities are not equipped for parents to change their kids. My elder daughter then started needing her own bags for school, so we moved into the kids’ space — but we added features that add value to the parent, because I know the parent is going to end up carrying the bag.

So, in a lot of ways, we have been (selfishly) designing products for ourselves and our evolving families, but then we go into it with the perspective that those needs can be applied to the consumer who is also looking for functional, good-looking products to make their lives easier while on-the-go. So, we have grown by expanding into new categories that have grown as we have.

What role will a physical retail presence play in growing the brand?

We are majority direct-to-consumer and, until our first pop-up, we had only partnered with Revolve and had a very small section in Nordstrom, which was important for us because I wanted people to be able to touch and feel the product. However, with wholesale accounts, I’m not in control of that retail experience and that’s the part that has been missing for me.

I want our consumers to see how the products live in a room, because if you see it in a store, there’s no lifestyle there. The pop-ups are important because we can create an experience. They allow us to play around, to try something new, to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s not forever; it’s not a commitment.

One day, when we do go into brick and mortar, there will have been a lot of research into where we do it and how we do it. But for right now, I’m having so much fun just doing these timely hits. As a matter of fact, we are currently planning a pop-up with Shopify in New York at the end of November into early December.

What is next for Béis?

I want to be that go-to brand where consumers think, “That’s the place where I go to get what I need to make on-the-go life easier.” Just like how there are certain stores that, if I’m going camping, I know to hit up this specific place and they will have everything I need.

I’m creating bags and accessories to help whenever you leave the house. But I want to make that easier for you. Every single product is thought out. The sky has no limits.

This is a sponsored feature paid for by Béis as part of a BoF partnership.

The Rise of BÉIS Travel: Inside the Marketing Strategies that Quadrupled Sales

The Rise of BÉIS Travel: Inside the Marketing Strategies that Quadrupled Sales

BÉIS Travel has become one of the fastest-rising ecommerce DTC brands out there. In 2018 (the year it was founded by actress Shay Mitchell) it brought in $20 million in revenue by selling luggage and travel accessories.

Since then, BÉIS Travel has quadrupled in size and become a leader in the travel industry.

They’ve signed deals with Nordstrom and Revolve while remaining focused on the DTC side of their business. And they’ve stayed true to the principles that inspired Shay to found the company, namely the need for “functional, but affordable and chic-looking luggage.”

In this marketing breakdown, we’ll examine the strategies that enabled such rapid growth.

Let’s get started!

Shortcuts ✂️

  • Have a great product launch strategy on Instagram
  • Drive brand awareness with Facebook ads
  • Create different content for each channel
  • Listen to customer feedback

1. Have a great product launch strategy on Instagram

BÉIS Travel relies heavily on Instagram to reach their audience. In fact, the social media platform is responsible for 80% of their ecommerce traffic . And it makes sense, as their core customers are predominantly female millennials.

That’s why the company promotes its product launches (and even restocks of popular products) on their Instagram page.

Here’s their formula as used in one recent restock.

The day before the restocked items would become available, they shared multiple stories to announce and hype up the newly available product line. Take a look below.

BÉIS Travel Marketing Breakdown Instagram Stories

Notice how these stories use both clever copy (“We Have Some Trash News”) and a countdown timer to build a sense of anticipation and urgency .

They also use posts to generate hype before restocks, like in the examples below.

BÉIS Travel Marketing Breakdown Instagram Posts

How about new product launches?

Their promotional strategy for completely new products has a few extra steps. Let’s examine their recent launch of the BÉIS SPORT line in more detail:

beis travel ambassador

Jan 19 – Jan 24: Teaser campaign

Five days before the launch, BÉIS Travel started running a big pre-launch campaign with different posts each day. They slowly unveiled the new products in order to build a sense of anticipation around the launch.

Here’s a breakdown of the pre-launch campaign.

  • Jan 19: A brand video announced that the BÉIS SPORT line was coming on Jan 25. Shay commented on the Instagram post.
  • January 21-24: Each day, an Instagram video featuring Shay introduced a new product from the upcoming line.
  • Jan 23: They announced a partnership with Flexpower, making their BÉIS Sport Pack available in a bundle.
  • Jan 24: A final post showcased all the products at once.

Jan 25: Launch

On launch day, the BÉIS Travel social media team was busy.

They made three posts announcing that the line was now available as well as a video that showed the new products in action.

Finally, they recreated an iconic photo of Princess Diana using products they’d just launched, which showed people their inspiration for the design of the new products.

Jan 26 – Feb 4: Post-launch

After the new products went live, BÉIS Travel continued making daily posts to promote them. Here’s a selection of what they posted about.

  • Jan 26 – Jan 30: Daily (or even twice daily) posts with new images and videos featuring the products.
  • Jan 31: The brand hosted a charity Pickleball Tournament.
  • Feb 2: A post about National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is proof that they really thought about the timing of the launch.
  • Feb 2 – Feb 4: Daily posts about the new products.

BÉIS Travel’s product launch strategy shows an amazing example of how you can use social media. Instagram provides a fantastic opportunity for brands to generate hype around products and let followers know what’s happening.

In a podcast interview , Adeela Hussain Johnson, President of BÉIS Travel, opened up about the reasons why the company relies so heavily on social networks to market their products.

“People want to be able to experience and purchase and interact with the brands that they love through every channel that they interact in. And that means you have to invest in those channels and understand them. Social media tends to be, I think, the way we receive a lot of that information,” she said.

2. Drive brand awareness with Facebook ads

BÉIS Travel made the decision not to pay influencers to post about the brand. “If we have anybody posting about us, that’s always organic,” says Shay Mitchell .

However, they do use lots of paid ads, which Shay regularly appears in. They often run walkthrough videos as ads, where the founder introduces a product in detail.

BÉIS Travel Marketing Breakdown Facebook ads

According to Adeela, these videos are the best performing content because “at the end of the day, consumers, when they’re wanting to buy a product, they want to know what that product does.”

Just like Instagram content, it’s important to adjust your Facebook ad strategy when needed.

For example, when COVID hit, BÉIS Travel had to change some ads that were focusing on plane travel.

So they pulled ads that spoke to plane travel and repurposed those dollars to driving home the brand message of being a versatile, on-the-go brand. They also focused on creative content that highlighted the functional aspects of their products.

This realignment brought great results. Products that were useful on a day-to-day basis saw a jump in sales. Adeela said that “the weekender, as an example, drove 4x DTC revenue and the work tote 2x DTC revenue, almost overnight, as we pivoted the message and creative.”

3. Create different content for each channel

Many brands make the mistake of simply reusing the same content on each social channel. BÉIS Travel, on the other hand, recognized early on that their audience expects to see different types of content on different platforms.

“What works on a paid ad won’t work on social and what works on social won’t work on TikTok and won’t work on email or your website… This is something we’re learning here as we are trying to move into TikTok,” said Adeela .

When they first started getting their TikTok up and running, the BÉIS team tried to reuse the videos they created for YouTube.

However, nobody on TikTok found them even remotely interesting, despite the fact that they had performed well on YouTube. So they had to change their strategy.

Today, they share totally unique videos on TikTok that work well on the platform, like these examples:

@beis Replying to @paigetapp_ ♬ Sunshine - WIRA
@beis Yes, it converts into a backpack 😱 ♬ Are You Ready - AHMAD
@beis Innovative brand new product? Of course ♬ Funk Rave - Don´t Let Me Down 140 Bpm - kirtap

4. Listen to customer feedback

BÉIS Travel takes customer feedback very seriously, and it means more than just listening to their customers on social media.

For example, before the company released their Baby collection, they sent prototypes to lots of moms and asked them for feedback.

“We very much took that feedback and changed the product. Our first version was far too big. The handles weren’t working properly,” said Adeela .

Sending prototypes of new products to your best customers allows you to collect information from your audience and adjust your product to better fit their needs. It will also make these early adopters even more loyal to your brand.

Wrapping up

As we can see from BÉIS Travel’s rapid rise to the top of the ecommerce game, a little bit of marketing savvy goes a long way. They’re great at adapting their message to different platforms and different audiences, effectively communicating what makes them different from their competition.

Now it’s your turn! How do you adapt your marketing content to different audiences?

  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Leticia Almeida

Previously known for her role on Pretty Little Liars , Shay Mitchell is now the founder of one of the most trusted luggage brands on the market: Béis. Debuting minimalist-chic luggage to rival the likes of Away, Béis luggage is moderately priced, stylish, and uber-functional, so we had to get our hands on one of pretty much everything.

After months of testing 17 pieces of Béis luggage and other accessories in both the Travel + Leisure lab and our real-world travels, we can confidently recommend these nine items for anyone looking to invest in Béis travel products. While we’re big fans of the brand's suitcases, we also love the weekender and duffel bags, cosmetic cases, and packing cubes for staying extra organized on the go.

Best Carry-on

Béis the carry-on roller.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Organization 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 5 /5
  • Durability 2.5 /5

It’s easy to pack thanks to all of the organizational features.

The handle can get stuck if the bag is dented a certain way.

Both minimalist and maximalist packers alike will appreciate the simple and spacious design of the Béis Carry-on Roller. Whether packing for a weekend or week-long trip, the clamshell suitcase has a removable compression system with a mesh pocket on one side, while the other features two zippered pockets on the opening flap for storing undergarments or smaller pieces of clothing. The various pockets and separate compartments makes it intuitive and hassle-free to pack bulky and small items, and the suitcase isn’t so big that it’ll get too heavy to wheel or pick up. After traveling with this bag over a six-month period, we love that it's incredibly durable. The wheels roll well on concrete, grass, and gravel and have held up well throughout our many travels. Other thoughtful features we love include the padded handle, expandable zippers, weight limit indicator, and retractable bag strap for attaching another suitcase or smaller bag. We recommend avoiding checking in this carry-on when possible since it scuffed and dented fairly easily during testing.

The Details: 22.8 x 15.7 x 9.8-12 inches | 8.36 pounds | Polycarbonate | Expandable

Best Checked

Béis check-in roller.

  • Durability 4.8 /5

The medium size helps with portability, but it also has expandable zippers if more space is needed.

After six months of use, the lighter color does show some significant scuffing.

We’re big fans of the just-right size of the Béis 26-inch checked roller bag. It’s big enough to fit up to two weeks’ worth of clothing, but the medium size is better for maneuvering it on the go or storing it at home than even larger sizes. Throughout six months of testing, we loved the smooth wheels that make navigating through airports easy and seamless. The organizational features are similar to the brand’s carry-on suitcase, with a detachable compression flap and various zippered pockets for packing smaller items. If you need extra room for longer trips, the suitcase has expandable zippers that add an extra two inches of space. Worried about the weight of the suitcase? There is a helpful weight limit indicator on the side of the suitcase that will turn red when the bag is over 50 pounds so you’ll never run the risk of overweight baggage fees. During lab testing, the polycarbonate material scuffed and dented with rough handling, so if you want to avoid noticeable scratches, consider opting for one of the darker colors offered.

The Details: 28.3 x 17.7 x 11 inches | 10.2 pounds | Polycarbonate

Best Weekender

Béis the weekender.

  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 4.5 /5

It offers an impressive capacity without compromising portability.

It's difficult to fit under plane seats, so you'll have to place it in the overhead bin.

The Béis Weekender bag is one of the brand's best-selling items and we understand why after testing. It wowed us with a spacious interior that could fit more than enough for a weekend away, especially with the separate compartment on the bottom of the bag. The detachable compartment is perfect for bulky items like shoes and jackets, or you can remove it entirely to make the bag more compact. After using this for six months, its durability has not changed and we're calling this our "Mary Poppins bag" because it fits so many items.

Business travelers will appreciate that the bag comes with a vegan leather laptop case and designated laptop pocket to safely store technology while traveling. Similar to the Sport Duffel, this Béis bag comes with a removable strap so you can carry it as a tote or duffel bag for a convertible design. We also love that the weekender has a structured build to stand up on its own while packing it and there are metal feet at the bottom to protect the bag from the floor (although we did notice the metal feet scratched a bit in testing).

The Details: 19 x 15.7 x 9.8 inches | Poly canvas, vegan leather | 15-inch laptop pocket

Best Duffel

Béis the commuter duffle.

  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Portability 5 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

You'll reach peak organization with the various pockets and compartments featured in this bag.

It becomes heavy quickly since the bag itself weighs over three pounds.

This high-quality duffel is durable, comfortable to carry, and features more pockets than you'll know what to do with. It was made with so much obvious attention to detail that's perfect for any traveler from weekend adventurers to business travelers . The duffel is a lot more spacious than it first appears as it easily fits our four-day packing list thanks to the many compartments (six on the inside, and four on the outside of the bag). Throughout our tests, we noticed that every pocket is multi-functional and purposeful — the side of the bag even features a pocket with a zippered bottom that can be opened to double as a luggage sleeve. The duffel is also comfortable to carry and all of the zippers glide easily making this one of our absolute favorite personal items, weekender bags, overnight bag, and more.

The Details: Nylon and polyester | 21.5 x 9 x 12 inches | 3.15 pounds

Best Gym Bag

Béis the sport duffle.

It has a modular design so you can carry it as a tote, duffel, or backpack.

We think the straps could be more size-inclusive.

Versatility in a piece of luggage is super important, so we love that the sport duffel has a convertible design to carry it in multiple ways. It has handles to carry it as a tote, and it comes with a removable crossbody strap to toss it over the shoulder like a traditional duffel. We love the discrete backpack straps that are tucked away in a pocket on the bottom of the duffel to be fully hidden when not in use. No matter which way we carried the duffel, it was comfortable and convenient with the weight distributed across all the straps. The only downside we ran into is the crossbody strap doesn’t adjust to a long length to accommodate all body types. Still, after six months of using this bag multiple times a week, we found this to be one of the most convenient, innovative, and intuitive bags we tested — and it still looks brand new. While the bag appears to be small, it can fit enough clothes for a weekend getaway and it has impressive organizational features for packing various items. It also comes with a drawstring bag for dirty clothes, which is a thoughtful feature for travelers and gym-goers alike.

The Details: 17 x 10 x 8.5 inches | Nylon, recycled polyester | Trolley sleeve

Best Cosmetics Case

Béis the cosmetic case.

  • Quality 5 /5

It has a wipeable interior and a handy travel mirror for doing makeup on the go.

A few more organizational features would be helpful for bottles or other fragile makeup.

A reliable makeup case is a must-have for traveling, especially since beauty products can be costly and difficult to replace while traveling. The brand’s cosmetic case earned a perfect score during testing thanks to its sleek and structured design that safeguards toiletries whether packed in a carry-on or checked bag. It has room to fit all of the makeup essentials, including foundation bottles, eyeshadow palettes, mascara, and toiletries like mini shampoo and toothpaste. Arguably, the best part of this case is that it comes with a removable standing travel mirror so you can turn any small space into a vanity.

We love the removable brush holder with straps and a clear plastic window to hold down makeup brushes and protect the bristles from bending. While no makeup got damaged during testing, we think there could be a few more straps or dividers in the spacious main compartment to tie down bottles or palettes more securely. However, if there is some spillage while traveling, the interior is lined with a fully wipeable fabric for hassle-free clean-up.

The Details: 9.5 x 4 x 7 inches | PU leather, nylon, PVC, poly | Zipper closure

Best Hanging Cosmetics Bag

Béis hanging cosmetic case.

  • Value 3.5 /5

The structured materials protect makeup and cosmetics from getting damaged in transit.

It’s a little too bulky to pack in smaller luggage.

Counter space can be hard to come by when you’re traveling, so a travel hanging organizer can really come in handy. This one from Béis has a structured case design that unzips and hangs via a hook with three compartments for storing makeup brushes, foundation bottles, eyeshadow palettes, and more. The stiff exterior material protects the makeup, and we didn’t notice any damage when we rigorously shook, tossed, and threw the case across the room. Our only gripe with the makeup case is that it’s very large so it will take up a lot of space in a small carry-on or weekender bag. However, the case comes with a clear zippered pouch that you can remove from the middle compartment to use as a mini cosmetic pouch for shorter trips.

The Details: 9.75 x 7.25 x 6.5 inches | Nylon, vegan leather

Best Packing Cubes

Béis the packing cubes.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Quality 4 /5

It’s easy to see what is packed inside each cube since the opening flaps are made with mesh and have label holders.

The cubes are better for organization than saving space.

This packing cube set is the ultimate solution to staying organized while traveling since it comes with three cubes, two drawstring bags, and one zippered pouch. The small, medium, and large packing cubes make it a breeze to pack various pieces of clothing like jackets, pants, tops, and undergarments, and the range of cube sizes is helpful for mixing and matching depending on the suitcase size you’re using. Plus, the packing cubes have mesh opening flaps and label holders so you can seamlessly access the item you’re looking for without making a mess. And once your clothes are no longer clean, the zippered pouch makes an excellent dirty laundry hamper. To further separate clean items from dirty ones, you can also use the two drawstring pouches to keep shoes separated. If you’re looking to save space in a suitcase, you may want to opt for compression packing cubes , but if organization is a priority, you can’t beat the brand’s set of six packing cubes and pouches.

The Details: 6 bags included | 12 x 9 x 4 inches (small), 15 x 11 x 4 inches (medium), 17.5 x 12.5 x 4 inches (large) | PVC, polyester

Best Backpack

Béis the expandable backpack.

Béis Travel

The bag has expandable zippers that add extra space to use the backpack for weekend or overnight trips.

We wish the zipper opened up all the way for easier packing.

This backpack is a game-changer for avoiding extra baggage fees if you buy too many souvenirs while traveling. With the ability to add an extra two inches in depth, the expandable gusset provides enough space to pack enough clothes for an overnight trip or short weekend getaway. However, if you’re looking to use the backpack as a personal item for flying, the backpack offers pockets for every carry-on essential you could ever need. It has a designated padded laptop pocket to store both 13- and 15-inch laptops that can be conveniently accessed from the separate pocket in the back. After carrying the backpack in an airport for several hours, we didn’t notice any pain or discomfort thanks to the adjustable padded straps and back panel that balance the weight for all-day comfort. And after six months of regular use, the bag still looks good as new.

The Details: 13 x 15 x 5-7 inches | Recycled polyester | 15-inch laptop pocket

Other Béis Travel Products We Liked

We’ve tried nearly everything from Béis, but not everything could make our list of winners due to slight issues revealed in testing.

Béis The Jewelry Case : The structured design is super protective, but the button closure isn’t very secure, so it came undone and the jewelry fell out when we dropped it on the floor.

Béis The Convertible Weekender : We’re big fans of the separate bottom compartment that you can completely remove, but tricky zippers make it hard to get it back onto the bag. We prefer the regular Weekender above.

Béis The Backpack : This backpack lacked padding for protection and comfort, but we like the simplicity of the design and useful pockets for laptops, chargers, and wallets.

Our T+L editors have tested hundreds of pieces of luggage and to try every item efficiently, we divide up the tests by category to evaluate in our labs and while traveling out in the world. We tested a total of 17 Béis travel products, including suitcases, backpacks, weekenders, and accessories like jewelry cases, packing cubes, and cosmetic bags.

To test suitcases, we first start in our lab utilizing our specially-designed airplane set complete with row of passenger seats and overhead storage bins to analyze the capacity, design, and maneuverability. We test the durability by taking a baseball bat to each bag and throwing it off a counter. Similarly for backpacks and weekenders, we pack the bags full of travel essentials to get a feel for the capacity, design, and portability. For bags that aren’t suitcases, we pay close attention to comfort and portability since those are two very important factors in buying a travel bag that gets schlepped around.

For accessories like jewelry cases, cosmetic bags, and packing cubes, we pack them with relevant travel items and test durability by dropping, tossing, and throwing the items (but to the dismay of our editors, no baseball bats are involved). All of the products we test in the lab are sent out for up to six months of further testing in real-world conditions.

Tips for Buying Béis Travel Products

Know how much space you need.

While it depends on the product, Béis has luggage and accessories in all types of sizes to fit the needs of all travelers. When it comes to luggage, the carry-ons and checked bags have expandable zippers so you can add two inches of space when desired. The weekender bag is massive, so if you’re looking for something more compact, opt for the mini or convertible weekend, or the duffel bags. The accessories are pretty straightforward with sizing since there is only one of each, except for the hanging cosmetic case, which is a bit bigger than the regular cosmetic bag, and the cosmetic bag set, which are the smallest sizes offered for storage pouches.

Evaluate organizational features

Throwing everything in one large bag or suitcase tends to result in, well, an organizational disaster once you get to your hotel room and need to find something. Instead look for organizational features that’ll best suit your needs. Béis luggage pieces tend to do double duty: a carry-on duffel or weekender has compartments suitable to work as a gym bag, and the backpack can also work as a catch-all for heading into the office thanks to its tech-specific compartments. Several checked and carry-on suitcases have built-in pockets and pouches, so decide which you’ll actually use and seek these out in your desired bags.

Buy for the intended use

Béis products are moderately priced for the luggage industry, however, it’s still important to invest in luggage that you know you’ll use. If you’re heading on a long international trip , you may want to consider purchasing a luggage set to save 15 percent when you get three suitcases. Business travelers or those traveling with laptops often may want to invest in a weekender or mini weekender bag that comes with a laptop pocket and a removable vegan leather laptop case for extra protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the best selection of products, the Béis website is where you’ll find all the items the brand offers in every colorway. You can also shop Béis online at Nordstrom and on the Revolve website .

Twenty-twenty posed challenges to even the most esteemed brands, let alone a year-old travel brand.

Béis , which was founded by actor Shay Mitchell in 2018 in partnership with Beach House Group, the incubator behind Florence By Mills , grew triple digits in 2020 despite travel restrictions and moratoriums. The brand’s chief executive officer, Adeela Hussain Johnson, said the L.A.-based brand, credits its success to rethinking travel products.

“Something that held us in good stead and helped us be really successful over the past year, and this is something that’s very near and dear to Shay as well, we wanted to redefine travel , and we didn’t feel that travel had to be that you’re getting on a plane and going to this faraway destination. You’re traveling when you’re going to work, or when you’re going to the gym,” Johnson added.

The brand’s rollers took a backseat to its debut products, like its shoulder bag, which Johnson affectionately called a “mobile office piece. If people’s lives are anything like mine, I have my kid’s school desks in the same room as my work desk, so any time I had an important meeting, I had to go to a different room,” she said. “Our work totes did really well, our messenger bags did really well, and are continuing to do so.”

As consumers felt more comfortable taking weekend trips, overnight bags also began seeing a lift. “Those have been our top-selling items, so that didn’t change. You don’t necessarily need an enormous 29-inch roller,’ Johnson said.

The brand’s shift in messaging to smaller, hands-free options was an instantaneous decision between Johnson and Mitchell, they each said. “Social media is something I take a lot of ownership over, usually planning everything out a lot in advance,” Mitchell said. “But last year threw so many curve balls that it was really just about being nimble and strategically reactive to what was going on as a business practice in general.”

The company’s social media strategy did a fair amount of shapeshifting. “The pandemic was the big cloud over the year, but there was racial injustice, social and civil unrest, and political upheaval. We felt very early that we had an obligation on the platform. We have to stand up and speak up, we can’t be quiet in times like this because we believe in transparency and authenticity,” Johnson said.

“We absolutely use social media the way we had previously, to have a connection and dialogue with our consumer, to showcase our brand, but we also used it to showcase opinion” Johnson continued.

Mitchell remained optimistic about a rebound. “The function of travel has definitely changed, but from a philosophical perspective, travel will remain much the same,” she said. “People travel because they want to explore. They will continue to get on planes, but maybe they are going to wipe their seats down, or not use the seatback on the plane, or think twice about stacking their clothes in the hotel dresser.”

Béis Luggage Review: Is the Buzzy Travel Brand Actually Worth It?

Our honest thoughts on everything from the viral Weekender Bag to the best-selling Carry-On Roller.

a photo of the beis carry on luggage and beis weekender bag

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

Our honest Béis luggage review

Is béis luggage worth it, more of béis luggage to consider.

Between hectic airport lines, crowded public transit and dreaded delays, traveling is already stressful enough. Drab, poorly made luggage should be the last of your concerns. Enter Béis, actress Shay Mitchell's travel brand touted as one of the Internet's favorite places to shop functional and stylish suitcases — at equally attractive prices.

There's no denying its stunning designs, but we had to see for ourselves just how practical their offerings were. So, I recruited the best-selling Front Pocket Carry-On Roller as my travel companion from Brooklyn, New York, to Boston, Massachusetts. I also compared notes with our Good Housekeeping Institute pros who regularly perform rigorous tests on suitcases to determine which ones best suit different needs. We tapped Senior Textiles Analyst Emma Seymour for her expertise on all things Béis, including the coveted Carry-On Roller .

Read on for our complete Béis luggage review , and get answers to the frequently asked questions about the celebrity-owned luggage brand.

The bottom line: Béis luggage is an excellent investment for style-conscious, casual travelers — but frequent flyers willing to splurge may want a more durable option.

What is Béis?

Founded in 2018, Béis (pronounced "base") made waves for its color-coordinated luggage, including a creamy Beige that became the brand's signature and a bubblegum Atlas Pink that perpetually sells out. TikTok helped propel the brand to viral fame thanks to hearty endorsements of the Weekender Bag , while luggage tags , tote bags and toiletry cases accompany its popular luggage.

That lineup includes four styles: a Carry-On Roller and a Front Pocket Carry-On , plus a medium-sized 26-inch Check-In Roller and a large-sized 28-inch Check-In Roller . Each suitcase is outfitted with a hard polycarbonate shell and 360-degree spinner wheels. But unlike other brands, Béis incorporates smart details like a retractable bag strap, a built-in weight indicator and a padded trolley handle.

As a frequent traveler herself, Mitchell said she thought about features she wished her old suitcases had. "I wanted to add a feature to the luggage to make it easy and simple," she told Bustle about the weight limit indicator. "It goes to one of the biggest goals for all of our products: Trying to make travel easier for people so they do it more."

Béis Front Pocket Carry-On Roller

Front Pocket Carry-On Roller

Béis Carry-On Roller

Carry-On Roller

Like other GH Institute-tested luggage such as Monos and Away , Béis suitcases feature a hard polycarbonate shell. Tougher than plastic and lighter than aluminum, polycarbonate suitcases generally earn high marks in our Lab tests — and Béis's carry-ons are no exception.

When traveling with the front-pocketed iteration, all my belongings (including my laptop, glass perfume bottles and souvenirs) remained perfectly intact throughout a bumpy ride in the luggage section of a Peter Pan bus. The padded front pocket cushioned my 16-inch MacBook during subway and train rides. I noticed some minor scuffs forming on the exterior. However, the Béis carry-on endured the excursion with no bumps or dents.

Our Lab expert, Emma Seymour, also performed several tests on the Carry-On Roller (sans front pocket) to determine how it may hold up over years of traveling. She put weights in the suitcase and dropped it repeatedly at a three-foot height from different angles. Similar to my own experience, the Béis carry-on didn't dent during any of the drop tests, though we did notice a few scuffs developing .

beis luggage with scuffs

Seymour tested the suitcase's scratch resistance in the Textiles Lab, and she found that it scratched and scuffed easily, especially around the edges by the zippers and handles. Fortunately, the textured matte finish wears the scratches and scuffs better than a shiny suitcase. We recommend buffing out scuffs with a sponge, like the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

Ease of Use

Whether you're traveling by subway, train or bus, the Béis Carry-On maneuvers like a dream. Its 360-degree spinner wheels glided smoothly across a variety of surfaces despite my heavy duffle strapped atop. Another one of my favorite features is the cushioned, telescoping handle. The squishy padding made rolling the suitcase through crowds far more comfortable, and it added a luxe touch compared to more expensive suitcases I've tried.

All Béis suitcases also come with a built-in scale, which Seymour appreciated when she had to check in her bag at the airport. Simply lift the suitcase by its side handle, and the discreet weight indicator window will turn red if your bag is over 50 pounds .

Béis makes light work out of packing. Using the carry-on with a front pocket, I had more than enough room to stash essentials for a long weekend — though, strategic packers (armed with handy packing cubes ) could probably fit a couple of weeks' worth of clothing. I fit everything from winter clothing and a pair of boots to a Béis toiletry bag and a full-sized hair dryer.

beis luggage review

Compared to the Monos Carry-On Pro (39.9L) or the Away Carry-On (39.8l), Béis claims the Front Pocket Carry-On offers a 47L interior — all while staying within airline regulation-approved dimensions. Those who need a smidge more space can opt for the classic Béis Carry-On that expands from 49L to 66L of packing space, per the brand. However, it's important to note that this model exceeds some airline regulations, meaning you may be asked to check it on smaller planes.

Both carry-on styles open butterfly style, with a zippered compartment on one side and a main compartment on the other . Inside the zippered side, there are two additional pockets built in — one frosted and one opaque — for holding toiletries, undergarments, chargers and more. A fabric divider keeps items organized while the adjustable compression straps give optimal packing room and help prevent items from shifting.

Just be careful not to overstuff the zipper pockets; otherwise, it can be difficult to close the bag. An added perk I loved: All Béis suitcases come with drawstring bags for dirty laundry or shoes.

For casual travelers, yes! Stylish and affordable, Béis luggage best suits those who only travel a handful of times per year or those who don't mind treating their suitcases with a bit more TLC.

During both personal use and Lab drop testing, the carry-ons were easily scuffed. Frequent flyers who need a suitcase to last them through years of continuous use may want to invest extra money in workhorse suitcases like Samsonite or TravelPro . I also found the Béis slightly harder to zip up than other suitcases when fully packed.

What it lacks in durability, Béis makes up for with premium details: an ergonomic telescoping handle, a built-in weight indicator, a bag strap and a handy TSA lock system. Weighing in at 8.6 lbs, it's slightly heavier than Monos or Away, but as an overpacker, I find that added storage a fair trade-off.

Aesthetics aside — luggage is a big investment at the end of the day. We appreciate that Béis offers some of the most attractive luggage we've tried while ringing in slightly less expensive than its competitors at $218 to $248 for a carry-on.

Béis shot to viral fame for its Weekender Bag — available in standard and mini sizes. Those on TikTok loved its sleek silhouette and clever details like a separate shoe compartment and a padded laptop sleeve. It also helped re-popularize the concept of weekender bags. Impressed by its airline-compatible dimensions and under-$100 price tag, we dubbed the Mini Weekender the most stylish weekender bag . The Béis Work Tote also earned nods from the GH Institute as the most fashionable work bag .

If you prefer a more classic style, the BÉISics Duffle is a great alternative. Similarly, it features a handy trolley strap that secures your bag on top of your suitcase — a lifesaver during long commutes. The Dopp Kit was larger than I expected, conveniently designed with two separate compartments for my makeup and skincare. I had a difficult time getting it to lay flat in my carry-on suitcase when packed to the brim, but it fit all the products I needed for my trip with room to spare. Plus, it's under $50.
