The BEST Food Tour In Portland Maine

Some of my favorite parts of traveling are trying local food and drink. While in Maine recently, I had a chance to take a complimentary tour with Maine Foodie Tours. After my three hours, I can give this the best Portland food tour moniker. Some links in this post are affiliate links that earn me a commission if you purchase through them.

While you probably know Maine for seafood – especially lobster – there’s so much more to offer. I had my lobster rolls, and I made it to Holy Donut for the requisite potato donuts. 

I even tried a local farm to table restaurant  because Portland is totally a foodie town. My biggest disappointment? I never found time for whoopie pies.

One of my favorite ways to find and try the best local eats in a town is to take a food tour. The companies already scouted out the best places to try, and you get a ton of bites packed into a short time. This lets you know where you go back to visit again.

With Maine Foodie Tours, they offer multiple food tours to fit your needs. In fact, they offer tours in Portland, Boothbay Harbor, and Kennebunkport. 

Whether you travel to the area for vacation or just spend the day in port from a cruise ship, this is a great way to get a sense of the area. The tours provide a history of the area in addition to more than enough food to fill you up.

They currently offer five food tours in Portland ranging in price from $24.95 (where you purchase your own food and drink) to $69.95 (all food and drink is provided). They also provide VIP tours for $95 that include special gifts from a discount to ship lobster home to all the tools you need to enjoy lobster once you get home.

Find the tour and the time that’s right for you. Maine Foodie Tours offers tours daily with morning, afternoon, and evening options.

Most tours have a maximum capacity of 14 people, with some maxing out at 10 people. This keeps you from feeling crowded or missing out on the tour.

Because Maine Foodie Tours partners with over 70 businesses in Portland alone, tours change regularly. While this gives you an idea of what to expect, know that your tour is likely to be different from these exact stops.

While I’ve been on food tours that end before the appointed hour, this tour lasts the full three hours (plus a bit) for the tour we took. Note that a couple tours are slightly shorter in length.

All tours run rain or shine, and they involve walking, so come prepared. You want comfy shoes, and dress in layers as the temps change throughout your tour. If you need an umbrella, grab one of the new fashioned ones that open upside down and aren’t as prone to breaking in wind.

Stops on the best portland food tour, hifi donuts.

Though HiFi Donuts wasn’t actually open during our tour, our guide picked up the famous donuts and brought them to us. We had the churro donuts, and they were delicious. 

While so many know Holy Donuts and their potato donuts, these are a completely different style. They’re light and in the style of a cruller.

Everything at HiFi Donuts gets made from scratch, and they’re open 7 days a week. This store opened two years on National Donut Day, an auspicious time to open, don’t you think?

The donuts were a great first start as the guide walked and provided us with highlights of the area.

Maine’s Pantry

Our first actual stop was Maine’s Pantry, a general store that sells all sorts of goods and products made in Maine. This is the place to get anything from Maine for your pantry – ergo the name.

Here, you try Moxie. The sample is fairly small, just a few sips in a small cup. This is a traditional soda, mostly enjoyed by old salty men in northern Maine according to our guide.

The general consensus? It tastes like a mix of cough syrup and Dr. Pepper. 

Once you finish your sample, you have some time to browse and shop, but be quick. You have just a couple minutes before it’s time to move to the next stop!

Blake Orchard

Blake Orchard focuses on cold pressed juices and raw smoothies. This business got its start selling in Boston farmers’ markets. As her popularity grew, she moved to Portland and opened a storefront.

Here we had a sweet ginger smoothie with house made almond mylk, banana, pineapple, maca, almond butter, date, and ginger. It gets garnished with chopped almonds.

This small basement storefront has a unique interior design that fits with the business’s persona. We had a fairly large size smoothie, which we needed at this point. 

Unlike most stops on the food tour, we picked up our samples and kept walking rather than enjoying it in the shop. Thankfully it’s easily portable, so this works out.

The first two hours of the tour focus more on walking and history and less on food, while the last hour packs in a lot of food. In fact, we couldn’t finish the last two samples because it was simple too much food in too short a time!

Monument Square

While we enjoyed our smoothies, we spent time in Monument Square – which is the second real “stop” on the tour that didn’t focus on food. We learned that Maine lost most men per capita in the Civil War than any other state. This square and statue commemorate those who served and fell.

The square is more than simply a memorial, however. Every Wednesday, Portland hosts a farmers’ market there that’s 300 years old. Many restaurants buy from vendors for weekly specials, which draws even more vendors and quality produce and other goods.

A fascinating fact about Portland? Any maker can sell without licensing or permitting. That’s why you see so many various vendors along many streets, whether selling artwork or in a farmers’ market selling anything from flowers to cheese.

Market House

Just off the square, we stopped at Market House. This is a building that acts as an incubator for many restauranteurs.

They may start with a food cart then move to a stall in Market House and grow from there to a full restaurant. It’s a way to people to test and perfect their offerings without as much risk.

In fact, a restaurant we wanted to visit while in Portland literally moved from Market House to their permanent full restaurant the day before we took the tour. This gives a ton of options for food in general when you visit, no matter what you have a taste for.

This visit, we stopped a KamaSouptra, a fun soup shop where you can choose your soup – and topping, if you wish. We loved the baked potato soup with bacon on top, and the grilled cheese soup with extra cheese was another favorite.

This stop gives you time to sit down to enjoy your soup and the huge, fresh roll that accompanies it. This is also your first chance on the tour to use a restroom if you need it. Make sure you take advantage.

Gritty’s Brew Pub

Gritty’s Brew Pub may have been one of my favorite stops on the best Portland food tour I took. In fact, I brought friends back here after our stop because we enjoyed it so much.

Gritty’s Brew Pub opened in 1988 as an authentic English pub, with fun murals and artwork on the walls. My favorite part though? The mug club they offer their regulars.

As you walk in, you see hundreds of numbered mugs hanging over the bar. Regulars have their own mugs that provide larger than standard servings. It’s the kind of small thing that makes me want to come back again and again.

Here, the food tour offers a stout and a blueberry beer. This changes seasonally, and the half glasses are a generous serving. If you prefer, they have a cider option – and I loved their cider.

Gritty’s Brew Pub also offered my favorite lobster roll of all the ones I tried in Maine. Seriously. It wasn’t yet on the official menu, but it is coming soon. Our portion was a small lobster roll with fries.

The lobster roll was served on a delicious toasted garlic roll that was the perfect texture and flavor with not overly seasoned lobster. This was a true winner!

Yes, you have a chance to use the restroom here, as well as at the next stop if you need. I appreciate places that have bathroom breaks – and I know I’m not alone.

Independent Ice Company

This was my other favorite stop, and again, they offered a significant portion size. I wish the tour had split up these two locations to better allow us to digest our food between, but I’m so glad we visited!

This stop has the most friendly owner who gave us the history of ice harvesting and shipping, which I found fascinating. Their main claim to fame is as a whiskey bar, and wow do they have a collection for you to try!

We enjoyed a meatloaf slider wrapped in bacon that is one of the best sliders I’ve had the pleasure of eating and a drink. I loved the unique twist on a classic. If only I had more room left in my stomach!

Each person received the choice of three cocktails. For us, that meant an alagash white, bourbon punch with five fruits, or a bourbon sangria with prosecco floater. Additionally, they offer juice or sodas if you don’t drink alcohol.

I didn’t know I liked bourbon until I tasted that sangria. It was just enough bourbon to give it flavor without overpowering it, and it’s something I would happily drink all summer long sitting on a patio.

Between this stop and the last one – that really is almost all it takes for me to call this the best Portland food tour.

Dean’s Sweet Shop

Our last stop had to be dessert, right? Dean’s Sweet Shop is a tiny chocolate shop where they make all their chocolates onsite. Here we had the opportunity to try two different chocolates they produce.

The first was a Needham chocolate. I enjoyed one of these on my chocolate factory tour in nearby Freeport, Maine . Traditionally, they’re made with mashed potatoes and powered sugar and dipped in chocolate.

Here, Dean’s Sweet Shop uses potato vodka instead of actual mashed potato. They also include cocoa powder so the inside is chocolatier and different from what you’ll see elsewhere.

We also had the chance to enjoy a layered confection of dark truffle with vanilla buttercream and splash of passion fruit. It was a fancier chocolate and more like what those outside Maine are used to seeing.

If you follow them on Instagram, they will also give you an additional truffle. To be honest, we were so full from the previous two stops that we couldn’t do more chocolate.

What makes this the best Portland food tour?

First, you don’t leave hungry. Remember me saying we couldn’t even take an additional piece of chocolate? The three hours was more food than we expected, and it more than encompasses a meal.

I love that Maine Foodie Tours can also accommodate allergies. If you let them know ahead of time, they can handle most common allergies from shellfish to gluten to dairy and more. We had a couple people on our tour with allergies, and the stops provided solid options for them throughout.

You don’t just go to the places everyone does. I love finding the smaller “hidden gems” type places that I otherwise would miss. It’s easy to know we need to hit from a quick Google search, but this gets us into amazing small businesses we otherwise likely would miss.

There’s plenty of walking, which gives a chance to learn about the history of the town and get more tips and tidbits. We walked about 2 1/2 or 3 miles on the tour, which is pretty typical. That helps walk off the calories we ate, right?

The food tour cost $69.95, which with six stops and two alcoholic drinks plus hearty food in many of the stops was worth the cost. I felt good about the value this food tour provides, especially when you count in the history and other details we learned along the way.

Portland Food Tour with Maine Day Ventures

The culinary scene in Portland, Maine, has much to offer travelers, and a walking food tour of the Old Port neighborhood is one of the best ways to begin. I recently had the opportunity to join an Old Port Culinary Walking Tour by Maine Day Ventures at no cost as part of my attendance at the AdventureELEVATE travel conference.

Whether you're a seasoned foodie or simply curious about exploring Portland's culinary landscape, this walking food tour is a great way to discover the Old Port district. So, put on your walking shoes, bring your appetite, and prepare for a fun experience that will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the flavors of downtown Portland, Maine.

First, I'd like you to feast your eyes on the Portland food tour as I experienced it. And then, I'll tell you more about the female founder, Pam, and her company.

Artist, raconteur, and food guide. Timothy Goldkin is all three and more, as he demonstrated during a three-hour walking of Portland's historic Old Port. We met Tim at 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday at the first stop on the tour.

At Andy's Old Port Pub, he led us from the front bar to the back room, where the walls were plastered with promotional posters for past performers. Everyone in our group took a seat, and Tim began telling us about the pub.

Located on Commercial Street, which runs along Portland's waterfront area, Andy's Old Port Pub is a local favorite among fishermen, women, and nearby islanders. They often grab local craft beers before catching the last ferry home. The Casco Bay Lines ferry service is on a pier one block north of the bar.

Andy's opened in 2007; however, it's clear from the worn floorboards and exposed brick walls that the building is much older. At this point, we were given a small glass of Andy's Old Port Lager by Island Dog Brewing, a brewery in South Portland, which I enjoyed.

Our first bite of food soon followed: a fresh fish taco made with haddock, cabbage, onion, pico de gallo, and lime crema. Andy's Old Port Pub's owners support sustainable fishing practices and source their seafood from the Gulf of Maine. Their menu includes lobster bruschetta, fish and chips, lobster rolls and BLTs, shrimp po'boys, and pulled pork poutine.

Leaving Andy's, we strolled one block south on Commercial Street and hung a left onto the Portland Pier. At the far end was another of Portland's restaurants and our next stop, Luke's Lobster . Here, Tim gave us the option to sit outside at picnic tables or inside. Despite the wind chill, we all chose the patio. The waterfront view alone was worth the visit. Tim was quick to inform us that we were on a working pier.

To that point, Luke's is adjacent to the station where they buy their lobster. You won't find Maine lobster any fresher! Also, we could see a woman painting buoys for lobster traps on the pier. Rocky Bottom Fisheries provides lobster demo tours and sunset cruises in Casco Bay.

Our drink at Luke's was a refreshing iced tea with lemon, and we had a hot cup of New England clam chowder with oyster crackers to eat. Tim also used this opportunity to tell us about Peaks Island, which he highly recommended we visit via the ferry.

One of the reasons I liked Tim was that he was very passionate about Portland and the Old Port in particular. After leaving Luke's, we walked to the end of the Portland Pier and hung a right. The photo below shows what we were looking at when Tim talked about the slow gentrification of the Old Port neighborhood.

The left shows old, somewhat rickety-looking buildings extending along Custom House Wharf. Contrast these with the newer buildings on the right, and you see where he was going. He also shared an enlightening anecdote about what it's like to empty an offshore lobster boat.

Next, we crossed Commercial Street and walked another block to Wharf Street, a two-block cobblestone alley lined with historic buildings. Tim described it as Portland's version of Bourbon Street in New Orleans , at least on Friday and Saturday nights.

But we were walking through this old cobblestone alleyway on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, and you'd never know it's a raucous nightlife spot. Our guide stopped in front of a bar called Bar of Chocolate. He recommended it for the drinks and vibe. I'd come across it in my pre-trip research. Cocktails served with dessert sounds like a winning combination!

A few doors down was Rigby Yard , our third stop on Maine Day Adventures' Portland food tour. Here, housed in an industrial building formerly used to repair train cars, we sat at a large high-top table and were served a Lunch IPA Beer (7%) by Maine Brewing Co. in Freeport. I'd been wondering whether we'd be treated to a lobster roll on our walking tour, and the answer was yes!

Each of us received a 3-ounce cold Maine lobster roll with light house-made mayo and a side of potato chips. Whole claw and knuckle meat were used, a sign you're getting the meatiest bits of the crustacean. This was my second lobster roll that day, as I'd gotten one earlier at the Bite of Maine food truck in Fort Williams Park. Of course, that didn't stop me from eating the entire thing and licking my fingers afterward.

At this point, I was craving a sweet finish to our Portland food tour, and Tim delivered. Our fourth and final stop was Dean's Sweets , less than a block away on Fore Street. Co-owners Kristin and Dean Bingham began making chocolate from their home nearly 20 years ago and built a business from it before long. Over 30 varieties of hand-dipped chocolate truffles are made in the kitchen at their Old Port location.

Every effort is made to source local food, such as:

• Organic maple syrup tapped in Madison
• Sea salt from Marshfield
• Butter from Casco Bay Creamery in Scarborough

If you have a nut allergy, you're in the right place. Their truffles don't contain nuts or nut products.

Everyone on our Portland food tour by Maine Day Ventures got to try two chocolate truffles in the shop. The first was provided for us, and the second we could choose ourselves. I picked a delicious seasonal offering, Dean's Derby Mint Julep, made with spearmint and bourbon buttercream.

Over three hours of learning about the local history of this port city, we enjoyed the following:

• Lobster rolls
• Handmade chocolates
• Craft beers from Maine x2

This is an example of the local cuisine your tour may include. However, some of the places you visit may differ. For example, maybe you'll end up at one of Portland's fantastic donut shops instead of a chocolate shop.

An entertaining and knowledgeable guide makes all the difference between a fun walking tour and a boring one. Tim was an excellent tour guide, and while I know it's unrealistic for everyone who takes one of Maine Day Ventures' Portland food tours to get him, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

The Old Port Culinary Walking Tour includes all food and beverages, plus the guide and gratuities for staff at the locations you visit. Tips for the guide are not included and are at your discretion.

One of the best ways to explore a city is through its cuisine. That’s why I booked a Portland Old Port Culinary Walking Tour through Viator on my recent trip to Portland, Maine, for the Women in Travel Summit .

I had heard great things about these Portland, Maine, food tours and had to try them out for myself!

Portland Old Port

Maine Foodie Tours offers all kinds of Maine walking tours, mostly in downtown Portland (like their new “Bon Appetite” Culinary Walking Tour, Fun-Filled Progressive Dinners, Tastes of the Top: A Restaurant Tour, Old Port Lunchtime Lobster Crawl, India Street Food Artisans, and The Culinary Palette: Art, Culture, and Food Tour.)

However, I chose to do their Old Port Culinary Walking Tour in downtown Portland.

Portland’s Old Port is a historic neighborhood right on the waterfront. Here, you can find boutique shopping and tasty restaurants, as well as a real working waterfront with fishing and cruise boats.

As you walk on the cobblestones (well, technically, they are pavers), you’ll feel instantly transported back in time.

Something you’ll notice about Portland Old Port is that you won’t find a lot of chain restaurants or stores. There are a few, but the vast majority are independently owned and operated.

And I have to talk about the architecture! It’s really stunning! So much of Old Port Maine tourism involves historic buildings.

As you walk around town, you’ll see Portland’s City Hall, which was built by the same people who designed the New York Public Library.

You’ll also see how the city changed after the big fire of 1866 when some kids lit fireworks and ended up torching all of Portland. Darn, kids!

Maine Foodie Tours: a Portland Old Port Culinary Walking Tour

I walked down to the meeting spot at Old Port Wine Shop about 15 minutes early and was surprised to see the rest of the guests also got there early!

I guess we were all hungry!

We met our tour guide, Chuck, who enthusiastically told us all about Portland Old Port and what we could expect on the tour of Old Port Maine restaurants.

He did an awesome job of introducing everyone on the tour and we instantly started chatting away.

Since I attended the tour on my own, I really appreciated being included from the get-go and not feeling isolated.

After introductions were out of the way, it was time to start the tour!

THE HOLY DONUT

Chuck actually brought our first stop to us! On his way to Old Port Wine Shop, he grabbed a box of donuts from the infamous The Holy Donut .

I hadn’t heard about them until I started researching places to eat in Portland, Maine, and they kept coming up.

They are the trendiest donut shop in Portland, and lines are usually out the door!

What sets them apart is that they are made with potato flour. They are super light and fluffy, and the flavors come through well.

He brought fresh lemon (there was even lemon zest!) and sea salt chocolate (one of their most popular flavors!)

Chuck cut them in half, so we got to try half of each flavor. OMG, they were tasty!

I almost went back on my last day so I could bring them home, but I wasn’t sure they’d make the flight home!

Insider tip: Bring a container so you take a few bites and save the rest for later. You won’t want to fill up on donuts at the start of the tour!

TOURED PORTLAND OLD PORT

This was actually my first tour of Portland Old Port, so it was nice to do it on foot. Part of that is because when we talked about the paver stones, I could reach down and take a closer look.

USA Today Travel Experience America actually rated Portland, Maine’s Wharf Street as one of the ten prettiest cobblestone streets in America.

When you stroll down it, you’ll understand why!

We also stopped at the Maine Lobsterman public art piece designed to represent Maine in the 1939 New York World’s Fair.

There, Chuck talked to us about the vital role of fishing in Maine’s economy.

Then, we walked past the Farmer’s Market, which locals claim to be the longest-running farmer’s market in America!

The Farmer’s Market is located in Monument Square. That’s where you’ll find the statue of Our Lady of Victories.

It’s in honor of the 5,000 Portland soldiers who died in the Civil War, fully one-sixth of its population.

Throughout the years, Monument Square has been the location of many protests, including ones focused on prohibition.

Coming from Seattle, I’m a huge connoisseur of seafood. We have some amazingly fresh sushi and I was very curious what sushi was like in Portland, Maine.

Chuck took us to Mr. Tuna, one of the top sushi restaurants in Portland, Maine. There, we tried their crab hand-rolled sushi, also known as a sushi burrito.

This was the perfect size to try!

The nori (seaweed) was crispy and the crab had the perfect blend of mayo with just enough veggie for a crunch.

Mr. Tuna used to be a food cart. Then, they upgraded to a food truck.

Now, it’s a full brick and mortar inside the Public Market House, a cool place filled with delicious food options and lots of seating.

The whole place had an eclectic vibe. And I heard that upstairs they have even more ethnic foods and shops.

SCATTOLONI BAKERY

Next up was Scattoloni Bakery, not too far away near a bookshop.

They offered us some water (we were all so thirsty!) and gave us the option of trying their minestrone or creamy tomato bisque.

I chose the tomato bisque, as did the majority of the group.

The soup was served with homemade focaccia bread. The focaccia was doughy in the best way possible and was incredible on its own or dipped in the soup.

While we ate, Chuck showed us sketches of the Portland Observatory , a historic landmark that was used to tell the community what ships were coming into harbor.

As we left, we each got to pick a cookie or bar to take home. They wrapped it up, and we were on our way!

MORE PORTLAND OLD PORT TOURING

I really couldn’t get enough of Portland, Maine’s fascinating history, so I was glad we got to learn a bit more as we worked up an appetite.

One of my favorite spots was the Colesworthy building. The builder decided it would be interesting to decorate the exterior with a real English cannonball.

It’s one of the things I probably wouldn’t have noticed had I walked around by myself.

We also heard the story about the huge Portland fire of 1866. It was started by 2 kids playing with firecrackers, and by the end, 13,000 people were homeless.

Thankfully, no one died.

However, that’s the reason so many buildings have distinctly different looks, especially from the bottom to the top.

BLAKE ORCHARD

I’m all about smoothies when we travel. I find it hard to get enough fruits and vegetables at restaurants, and so I feel better when I get some fresh juice or a smoothie.

Blake Orchard a very small place inside, but they have gorgeous pink wallpaper just screaming to be posted on Instagram! It’s my featured photo in this blog post!

We got to try a half serving of their Sweet Ginger smoothie made with: house-made almond milk, banana, pineapple, maca, almond butter, date, ginger, and garnished with chopped almonds.

I’ve never had that combo before, but it was so tasty! Not too sweet, but definitely flavorful!

They are opening up a second location soon.

GRITTY’S

Just as I thought it was odd we hadn’t tried Portland’s most famous dish (the lobster roll), we walked inside Gritty’s .

This is one of the most famous restaurants in Old Port, Maine, because of its lobster rolls and beer selection.

This was definitely the biggest meal of this Maine foodie tour, and it was fantastic.

We started by getting to try two different ales: one dark and one light. I’m not a beer/ale drinker, so I’m not the best judge. I will say the light one tasted pretty good with the lobster roll, though.

Under Gritty’s is where they make the beer, which goes directly to the tap in the bar.

There’s a mural on the wall depicting the entire process (although the naked people on the mural are not part of the process!)

After learning about the ale process, our food was ready!

We each got half a lobster roll and a generous portion of fries. The lobster roll was on a nice, buttery roll, and the lobster was mixed with mayonnaise.

While we ate, we learned about soft lobster and why they can’t ship it. Apparently, that’s what Mainers like to eat, and I’m hoping to visit during the soft lobster season!

DEAN’S SWEETS

This Maine Foodie Tour ended the way it should: with chocolate!

We headed to Dean’s Sweets where we got to try their version of a Needham, a traditional Maine potato confection. Dean’s Sweets uses Maine Cold River Vodka (distilled from Maine potatoes) and it was delicious!

We also tried a salted chocolate truffle that was divine!

All tour guests get 10% off, so I grabbed a few lobster lollipops for my kids before heading out.

Why I Loved Portland Old Port’s Maine Food Tour

For me, a big part of travel is meeting new people. As they say, people bond over food. So, what better way to get to know other travelers than by doing a food tour of Maine?

Maine Foodie Tours keeps their tour group small, and that facilitates quality conversations.

I met an older couple from Maine who told me how they are doing a photo contest for Down East , a Maine magazine, where they have to take selfies in specific spots around the state. It’s called the Great Maine Scavenger Hunt.

Even though they live in Maine, their adventures have taken them to places they haven’t been before, and they even involve their friends and family.

Apparently, they have won the past couple of years!

Their prize? Huge poster collages of all their selfies, plus bragging rights!

These folks also brought their cousins on the Portland food tour. They were two sisters from California who were in Boston for a wedding and decided to drive 4 hours to cross Maine off their bucket list.

We talked a bit about family travel and how important it is to make good memories while traveling with kids.

And then there were two older ladies from Texas who asked when it gets warm in Maine. Like 80 degrees warm.

It was hilarious to see their reaction when our guide Chuck told them that’s a very rare occasion, maybe in August!

From the fishing piers and wharves lined up like piano keys along Commercial Street to the ocean views and historic Queen Anne-style homes atop Munjoy Hill, Portland offers a lot for visitors to take in. And then there is the food. Maine's largest city has long been nationally known as a top food destination, and just this year two Portland bakers won James Beard Awards. To host travelers, culinary or otherwise, five boutique hotels have opened since 2020. The hotel construction, new high-end condo development and rising coastal real estate prices have exacerbated a housing crisis here. But the elements that make this New England city such an attractive place to visit — a dynamic creative economy, juxtaposition of the old and the new, and the distinctive character of a working waterfront — endure.

Recommendations

• The Eastern Promenade offers picnicking, beach access and a playground with an unbeatable view, plus lots of food trucks to explore.
• The Portland Museum of Art , which stretches across four buildings, has a collection of established and emerging Maine artists and includes a small sculpture garden.

• Hot Suppa! brings from-scratch Southern cooking to this very northern city — and the crowds show up.
• Bite Into Maine ’s Fort Williams food truck offers a very Maine experience: eating a lobster roll with a lighthouse in view.
• Oxbow Blending and Bottling is where this popular Maine brewery blends and packages its aged beers, with a large bar and patio area and frequent live music.
• Anoche offers Spanish gin, wine and a wide array of hard ciders, plus all that goes with it, including Spanish cheeses, meats and tinned fish.
• One Longfellow Square draws folk and roots musicians and their fans to its intimate performance space.
• Blue Portland Maine is expanding its legacy as a jazz bar to include other genres, with an emphasis on live sound quality in this small listening room.
• Rabelais sells rare food-and-drink books and will operate a tiny pop-up shop on Washington Avenue this summer.
• Open House is a showroom of antique, vintage and handmade furnishings and clothing.
• Onggi is a market and newly opened cafe with a focus on fermentation.
• Strata is a high-end kitchenware shop with an emphasis on beautiful quality knives.
• Back Cove Books is a neighborhood bookstore with a lovely children’s section and a cozy reading nook for the littlest readers and the grownups.
• At Print: A Bookstore , the staff are funny on Instagram and helpful in real life.
• The Longfellow Hotel , named after Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Portland’s most famous poet, opened in May, with 48 guest rooms and a spa on the edge of the historic West End neighborhood. A bar named for Longfellow’s five-man literary group, the Five of Clubs, is the lobby’s focal point. Rooms start at $499, higher during the summer season.
• Canopy by Hilton on the Portland Waterfront opened in 2021 and has one feature that truly sets it apart: a year-round rooftop bar, called Luna , where you can watch the sky over the Fore River change colors in the evening. With 135 rooms, it sits on a quieter block on Commercial Street, a tourist destination for shopping, dining and exploring the waterfront. Rooms start at $399 during the warmer months, higher for a water view.
• The Holiday Inn By the Bay is a more affordable mainstay. Guest rooms and event spaces in this 239-room hotel, built in 1973, have been renovated since 2020. The location is convenient — a block from the Portland Museum of Art — and room rates start around $160.
• While regulated Airbnbs are allowed in Portland, short-term rentals can be hard to find in summer months. With advance planning, look in Munjoy Hill, for easy access to the Eastern Promenade. To expand your search, consider staying in South Portland, just across the Casco Bay Bridge.
• Many attractions on the Portland peninsula are within walking distance of one another. Greater Portland Metro’s bus service offers connections to the Portland Transportation Center, with bus and train service from Boston and other points, and also runs a route that circles most of the peninsula. A single ride for most adults is $2. Be sure to check for updated schedules . Uber and Lyft offer generally reliable service. The city has a biking culture but a long way to go in developing bike lanes . Those who travel by car should read parking lot signs carefully, as ticketing can be aggressive.

Post Supply

A four-block stretch of Washington Avenue is a food hub good for shopping as well as eating. Start your stroll at Onggi , a fermentation market and cafe, where shelves are stocked with sake, chili crisp, pickled blueberries and more. Buy a hojicha-butterscotch oat cookie ($3.25 each) to enjoy as you wander south to browse high-end kitchenware and Maine-made home goods at Strata and Post Supply , found inside what once was the J.J. Nissen bakery, where the New England top-split hot dog bun was created. On the way: The repurposed shipping containers at the Black Box , which serve as five tiny shops with month-to-month leases. Arriving in July is a pop-up version of Rabelais , a renowned seller of rare food-and-drink books.

On to the eating, but how to choose? Texas-style barbecue is served on Terlingua’s sprawling back decks (one pound of house-smoked meats with a side, cornbread and pickles, $35), while sake and shared plates, such as fried tofu with jalapeño soy sauce and bonito ($7) or sautéed udon noodles with duck breast and vegetables ($15) can be found at Izakaya Minato . Công Tử Bột offers a warm welcome, with Vietnamese food ordered family style, great cocktails and a buzzy dining area that’s especially pleasant when the garage-style doors are open. Try the salad of puffed rice, oyster mushrooms and “pickled stuff” dressed with chile oil ($17) or the twice-cooked eggplant ($14). Leave room for chè chuối, a dessert of tapioca, coconut and banana that is more than the sum of its parts ($11).

After dinner, take a short stroll up Munjoy Hill, which dominates the eastern end of the city’s peninsula, to enjoy not one but two incredible views. At the end of Marion Street, follow the stone steps up to Fort Sumner Park, which looks west over Portland’s Back Cove. On a clear day, you can see the peak of Mount Washington and an exceptional sunset. From there, walk up Quebec Street to arrive at the Eastern Promenade, a 78-acre park that looks east over Casco Bay. Lounge on the grass or head back downhill on Congress Street to sit outside at Oxbow , one of the many Maine breweries that make beer in Portland or have outposts here, or choose from a long list of ciders on tap (from $7.50) at the Basque-inspired Anoche .

A four-block stretch of Washington Avenue is known for good shopping as well as good eating, including at places like Island Creek Oysters.

Ugly Duckling

Ugly Duckling , which opened in 2023 with a big U-shaped counter and a come-as-you-are vibe, is the latest project by Ilma Lopez and Damian Sansonetti, owners of the nearby Spanish-French brasserie Chaval. Breakfast sandwiches come on housemade English muffins. The No. 2, which includes two fried eggs, house pork sausage, American cheese and ketchup, is a popular order ($11.75). You might need a fork to finish the Como Se Dice Buongiorno ($12.75): fried egg, hash brown, prosciutto, jalapeño, arugula and garlic aioli on an English muffin with everything-bagel seasoning.

Catch the 10:15 a.m. boat to Peaks Island at the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal on Commercial Street. The island, with nearly 1,000 year-round residents, was once home to an amusement park and now has a no-shoes-required vibe. Part of the city of Portland, it sits just three miles offshore but feels much farther. During the 17-minute trip (from April to October: $14 roundtrip for adults, $7 for seniors and children), take in a view of Portland from the water, watch for harbor seals and pass by Fort Gorges, a formidable granite military fort built in the mid-19th century and now a frequent host to kayak tours and history buffs.

You can explore the island by foot, but a bike is handy to make the nearly four-mile loop around the perimeter. Bring your own on the ferry for an extra fee ($7 adult, $3.50 children), or rent one from Brad & Wyatt’s Island Bike Rental ($20 for two hours, $30 for four hours — rentals are first-come, first-served, no website). You’ll find great spots for exploring the rocks on the east side of the island, with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Before catching the return ferry, circle back to Il Leone for salad and pizza cooked in a wood-fired oven and eaten at a shady picnic table. The menu typically includes at least one pie that follows the harvest, highlighting Maine-grown garlic scapes, heirloom tomatoes or squash blossoms (pizzas start at $17.95).

Think of an indoor flea market and you might imagine rows of booths, some full of beauty, others full of dust. Back on the mainland, Open House instead arranges furniture in cozy living-room vignettes throughout its 10,000-square-foot shop on Congress Street, which has a large selection of vintage clothing and handcrafted goods. Items range in price from $5 for packable trinkets to a few thousand dollars for midcentury-modern antiques. And the owners welcome browsers — no stuffy gatekeepers here.

Maine has a rich literary past and present — for starters, Stephen King and Lois Lowry live and write in the state. In Portland, used, independent and specialty bookstores abound. Linger in the beautiful children’s section at Back Cove Books , in the Woodfords Corner neighborhood, which displays its biographies and current affairs books in an old bank vault. Or visit Print: A Bookstore , with its expertly curated staff picks and a large section highlighting Maine writers. Both shops draw an impressive slate of author readings and other events each month, so check their calendars online.

Plenty of restaurants in Portland serve lobster, but few get you as close to the lobster boat as Luke’s Lobster , a lobster-shack chain that has a full-service restaurant on the end of Portland Pier, off Commercial Street. The two-story restaurant, with a view of the Fore River as it meets Casco Bay, sits next to the company’s commercial lobster-buying facility, where lobster boats dock to sell their catch, some of which goes directly to the kitchen. (No reservations during the peak summer season.) Or reserve a table at Bar Futo in the Old Port to try skewers of squid, fish, pork belly or chicken ($7 to $9 each) grilled over binchotan, or Japanese charcoal, alongside a perfectly carbonated whiskey highball made with a Suntory Toki machine ($14).

Blue Portland Maine

Portland’s go-to venue for summer concerts by nationally touring artists is Thompson’s Point , an outdoor stage near the bank of the Fore River. Included in the 2024 lineup are Goose, Counting Crows and Dark Star Orchestra. But One Longfellow Square , in the West End with 180 seats, has a cozy feel that lends itself well to the folk and roots music that makes up most of its shows. Ticket prices vary but start around $20. Just half a block away is Blue Portland Maine , which hosts jazz and more. Half the shows are ticketed, with prices between $10 and $20, and half are free with a hat passed for the artists.

The Old Port, with its cobblestone streets and old brick buildings, is Portland’s traditional tourist district.

Start your Sunday at Hot Suppa! , with some shrimp and cheesy grits ($22) or scrambalaya ($17) — that’s eggs scrambled with jambalaya. Don’t choose your meal without consulting the specials, which highlight the kitchen’s from-scratch Southern cooking and seasonal produce. Recently, they included eggs Benedict with bacon and ramps ($23). And if your plate doesn’t already include corned beef hash, order a side for the table ($16).

Intricacy and devotion are on display in “ Jeremy Frey: Woven ,” through Sept. 15 at the Portland Museum of Art . Mr. Frey is a seventh-generation basketmaker from the Passamaquoddy tribe in Maine whose works have been shown at art markets for years and are found in major museums across the United States. This is the first solo museum exhibition for Frey, with more than 50 baskets and a short film documenting his process. While at the museum, you can see paintings by Winslow Homer and N.C. Wyeth, but don’t miss the work of artists who have broadened and deepened the legacy of Maine art in recent decades, including paintings by Reggie Burrows Hodges and Daniel Minter , and sculpture by Lauren Fensterstock . (Admission free for ages 21 and under. Seniors and students, $18. All others, $20.)

Portland Head Light

Leave time for the 15-minute drive out to Fort Williams Park , a 90-acre park owned by the nearby town of Cape Elizabeth that has a cliff walk, a children’s garden and a panoramic view of Casco Bay. It’s also home to Portland Head Light , a historic and much-photographed lighthouse. If you haven’t eaten a lobster roll yet (or even if you have), visit the Bite Into Maine food truck to choose between a Maine-style with mayo or a Connecticut-style with butter, or try the picnic-style roll, with lobster piled on a bed of coleslaw ($29.95). Yes, these rolls are pricey, but consider the view.

A restaurant in Winthrop is getting national attention after being named one of the best in the country.

Producers of the website and YouTube series "America's Best Restaurants" visited The White Duck Brew Pub after it was nominated by customers.

Veteran and quadruple amputee Travis Mills is one of the four owners of the pub.

“It’s been a really crazy and wild ride to have a restaurant, but as we’ve grown over the last two years, we have the outside that brings more people in, we have the outside kitchen with a different menu with live music Friday, Saturday, Sunday in the summer,” said Mills. “It’s been really cool to have everybody just come together and really welcome us into the community, for one, here in Winthrop, just having people come from all over to try our food here at the White Duck.”

White Duck Brew Pub has been open since the 1940s and is located on Route 202 in Winthrop.

Mills says he is also working on a brewery next to the restaurant that is set to open later this summer.

White Duck is one of eight restaurants in Maine spotlighted by "America's Best Restaurants." The others are:

Juneteenth, which became both a federal and state holiday in 2021 , celebrates the anniversary of federal troops’ arrival in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to ensure all enslaved people had been freed. This year, the holiday falls on Wednesday, but celebrations are happening over the next two weeks.

One of the best food trucks I've tried! Amazing fried rice, Korean corn dogs and much more. My favorite was the chicken fried rice but everything was great. The flavors are a bit on the spicy side and everything was so fresh. Make sure to follow them on instagram so you can see where they are parked. I'll be watching so I can have the food again!
