Francis Ford and Eleanor Coppola purchased this 28-acre property in Alexander Valley in 2006. Inspired by Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens, filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola wanted to create a family-friendly, resort-like winery where guests could "celebrate the love of life." Accordingly, this property has something for everyone, including two swimming pools with private "cabines" (cabanas), a poolside cafe and dining with a view at Rustic. The property also boasts a gallery filled with movie memorabilia from Coppola's feature films, bocce ball courts, and other activities and amenities. As for the wine, reservations are highly recommended if you want to enjoy a 45-minute seated tasting flight on the terrace, while the 30-minute tasting on the main floor operates on a more casual first-come, first-serve basis.

The inspiration for Jordan Vineyard & Winery, founded in 1972 by Tom and Sally Jordan, came from France's food and wine culture. The winery chateau houses the winemaking operation, wine cellars, kitchen and other facilities; it's also one of the venues where you can sample the vineyard's notable cabernets and chardonnays. Tasting experiences include a winery walking tour with a seated wine and food pairing in the new French-inspired cellar room. A guided vineyard tasting includes two vintages of Russian River chardonnay and two vintages of Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon paired with a selection of artisanal salumi and cheeses chosen by the winemaker – amid panoramic vineyard views. The wines you'll sample on a three-hour estate tour are accompanied by food pairings and an olive oil tasting, along with a light lunch. Keep in mind that reservations are required for all tastings.

To accompany the family's long history of growing grapes, Clay Mauritson sought to add winemaking to the farming operation in the 1990s, debuting the winery's inaugural zinfandel in 1998. Today, signature flight tastings are available to visitors by reservation. The winery owners, Lester and Linda Schwartz, purchased the stunning 976 coastal acres in 1988, only farming the grasslands, leaving the pristine forests and meadows untouched. This area is set apart from other Sonoma Coast AVAs by its elevation and proximity to the ocean, creating an optimal environment for farming pinot noir and chardonnay vineyards. Carneros straddles Sonoma and Napa, and the impact of the maritime effects of San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean creates the environment for a long growing season – and the optimal terroir to produce sparkling wines. Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards in 2016 was certified as sustainable. The estate comprises a total of 335 acres spanning two ranches, and guests can visit the winery and sample its sparkling wines with a selection of reservable tours and tastings. The 15 Best Sonoma Wineries To Visit

Allison Levine [January 2024]

Sonoma wine country

When visiting Sonoma , where does one get started wine tasting? As a region, Sonoma County encompasses more than fifty miles from Carneros in the south to Cloverdale in the north. It is home to seventeen American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Some are well-known such as Russian River Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley, to name a few, and others are lesser known such as Moon Mountain, Fort-Ross Seaview, and Green Valley. Sonoma is home to the state of California’s oldest commercial winery, Buena Vista, as well as the oldest continuously operating family winery, Gundlach Bundschu. And, there are more than 425 wineries on almost 60,000 acres. That means there are a lot of decisions to be made before you start a Sonoma wine tasting adventure.

Unlike Sonoma’s neighbor to the east, Napa , where there are wineries located off of the main highway, many of the wineries in Sonoma are spread throughout the valley. So where do you begin? It is easier to find some of the bigger known wineries in the county, but seeking out small and medium-sized boutique wineries is what I prefer to do. Here are eleven Sonoma wine tasting finds that are worth a visit throughout the valley.

Enjoy this article? Sign up to create your perfect Sonoma wine tasting itinerary

As you enter Sonoma Valley, the first area is Carneros, which actually sits in both Napa and Sonoma Counties.

1) Schug Carneros Estate (www.schugwinery.com) |  Save on Schug tastings with the Priority Wine Pass

Started in 1980 by Walter Schug, Schug Carneros Estate sits on fifty acres that overlook Carneros. Walter Schug was a pioneer of pinot noir, having been raised in Germany where his father ran the first pinot noir estate along the Rhine River in Germany.

Schug emigrated to the U.S. in 1961 and after working for Julian Gallo, he worked at Joseph Phelps where he created the infamous Insignia. Desiring to make pinot noir, Schug created his own label in 1980 and opened the winery in 1989. Although Walter Schug passed away in 2015, the winery is still family owned and run by his son Axel.

Winemaker Michael Cox has been with Schug for twenty-one years and is focused on producing elegant wines. Stop by the tasting room for a $10 tasting or set up a private winery tour and tasting where you will enjoy the Schug Rouge du Noir Brut sparkling wine, as well as selected chardonnay, pinot noir, and cabernet sauvignon, paired with cheeses.

Continue your Sonoma wine tasting tour north of Carneros is the town of Sonoma. Centered around the largest plaza in California, the Sonoma Square is home to a number of tasting rooms worth a visit.

2) Sojourn Cellars (www.sojourncellars.com):

soujorn winery tasting

Beginning with sourcing pinot noir from the famous Sangiacomo Vineyard, today they work with some of the best vineyards in Sonoma and Napa.

Focusing on balanced wine, Sojourn Cellars believes in being hands-off in the winemaking process by using natural yeasts and not filtering or fining the wines. In the end, they are able to capture the time and place in the bottle. Today they produce 8500 cases of wine. They include nine pinot noirs, seven of which are single vineyard They also produce cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay.

Schedule an appointment in the Sojourn Salon. Here you can enjoy a seated comparison tasting of the wines produced from various vineyards.

3) Pangloss Cellars (www.panglosscellars.com):

Located in the Sonoma Plaza, the Pangloss tasting room is in a restored building built in 1902. It is a magnificent space, with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, a large bar in the center of the room. There are couches and chairs positioned throughout the space for small groups.

Winemaker Erich Bradley of Sojourn Cellars also makes the wines for Pangloss. Bradley focuses on expressing the terroir in the wines he produces. He wants each wine to have its own personality. The wines are accessible and taste good, and are even better when enjoyed in a wine and food flight.

Enjoy a flight of white wines with a selection of caviar, a Burgundy flight with cheese, a Sonoma flight with charcuterie, a Bordeaux flight with pate or a red wine flight with chocolates.

Producing less than 1000 cases of each wine, ranging from Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and a Rhone blend, the Pangloss wines are only available for purchase at the tasting lounge.

4) Auteur Wines (https://www.auteurwines.com):

auteur tasting room

The winery was recently written up in Wine Spectator as one of the Top 10 Sonoma Pinot Noirs to Try Now, so be sure to schedule an appointment if you want to visit.

The Auteur tasting room is a small house just off the Sonoma Plaza and visiting is like going to a friend’s home. It is relaxed and intimate and each room in the house offers a cozy tasting area. In the living room, you can sit on couches as you taste.  Larger groups can center around the dining room table or head outside to the outdoor patio.

5) Three Sticks Wines (www.threestickswines.com):

three sticks winery

Founded in 2002 by owner William Price III, known as Billy Three Sticks growing up surfing in Hawaii, Three Sticks focuses on producing wines from some of Sonoma’s best vineyards, including Durell and Gap’s Crown. Three Sticks produces approximately 4000 cases per year of chardonnay, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, as well as a tasting room exclusive of white, red, and rosè Rhone blends. These wines can all be enjoyed at The Adobe where the tasting room is located. The Adobe was home to Don Juan Casteñado, secretary to General Vallejo, in 1842. Price and his wife purchased this historic home in 2012 and spent two years renovating and restoring it. Today it is open via appointment only. Enjoy a tasting of four current releases for $35 or a library tasting of seven wines for $70. The Adobe is a place of warmth and hospitality and whether you sit inside the home or in the outdoor garden, an intimate tasting of Three Sticks winery will be memorable.

6) Kamen Estate Wines (www.kamenwines.com):

kamen winery vineyards

The vineyard is one of the first organic certified vineyards in the country. Kamen Estate Wines produces 3000 cases of primarily cabernet sauvignon, as well as sauvignon blanc, grenache, syrah and cabernet franc. Stop in at the tasting room along the Sonoma Plaza or schedule a tasting that will take you into the vineyard at the top of Moon Mountain where you can sip wine as you overlook Sonoma Valley.

Your Sonoma wine tasting adventure continues a little further up the road from Sonoma in the town of Kenwood, home to more tasting rooms and restaurants.

7) B Wise (www.bwisevineyards.com) |   Save on B Wise tastings with the Priority Wine P ass

Brian Wise purchased 100 acres in Moon Mountain in 2001. He was drawn to the undeveloped property that had been an old stone quarry at the turn of the century because of its proximity to the iconic Monte Rosso vineyard. The twenty-one acres of vineyards are planted at an elevation of 700 feet in red volcanic ash which gives the cabernet sauvignon a fresh, vital quality with bright aromas of dark red fruits and minerality.

The tasting room in Kenwood is a modern lounge with a bar, tables, and couches but the real treat is to book a private tasting in the Cellar Reserve Room at the vineyard. Heading up Moon Mountain, you will be taken into the caves that are home to the perfect “man cave” where you can enjoy reserve and library selection.

Up the road from Kenwood is Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa is the largest city in Sonoma County. You will head off the main road to the wineries of the Russian River for more great Sonoma wine tasting options.

inman family wines

8) Inman Family Wines (www.inmanfamilywines.com):

Inman Family Wines has been producing wine since 2000. Owner and winemaker, Kathleen Inman organically farms 10.45 acres at her Olivet Grange Vineyard in the heart of the Russian River.

Producing 3000 cases of pinot noir, chardonnay, and pinot gris, the wines are elegant and subtle. These are not big ripe wines but rather wines with low alcohol, high acidity, and perfect to pair with food.

The Inman tasting room is located at the winery in the vineyard. Inman’s focus on sustainable winemaking translates to the winery which is made almost entirely from recycled materials. Tastings are available Thursday through Sunday by appointment only. And, if you are looking for somewhere to stay, Inman offers a three-bedroom, one-bathroom farmhouse on the property with the motto of “bed and get your own breakfast.”

As you continue to head north towards Healdsburg, make a stop in the town of Windsor. The town is not much larger than a few streets but tucked in some warehouses is Artisan Alley Windsor, home to artisanal wine, cider, and spirit producers.

9) Two Shepherds (www.twoshepherds.com):

two shepards winery

From his writing to his natural ability to make wine, he was known as the “palate shepherd.” As a shepherd of both the palate and the wine, the name Two Shepherds was born.

Allen takes a minimalist approach to winemaking. With only 1500 cases of wine produced, the wines are unfiltered and unfined. Allen is focused on Rhone blends, including amazing carignan and rosè carignan from 45-year-old head-trained vines that are dry farmed. Producing wines for wine geeks, be sure to try the trousseau gris made from the only planting in California.

Two Shepherds tasting room is open every Saturday but if you are there on another day, call ahead to make an appointment.

From Windsor, head further north to the town of Healdsburg. This is a prime Sonoma wine tasting spot.

10) MacRostie Winery and Vineyard (www.macrostiewinery.com):

MacRostie Winery was originally opened in 1987 by Steve MacRostie. A visionary, MacRostie was one of the first people to plant in the fog-shrouded vineyards of Sonoma County. After thirty years, he sold to Distinguished Vineyards and Wine Partners in 2011 but still guides the winemaking along with winemaker Heidi Bridenhagen.

MacRostie produces pinot noir and chardonnay from numerous sites including the fifty-eight acres from the Wildcat Mountain Vineyard that was planted in 1998. In February 2015, MacRostie Winery opened the winery and tasting room on Westside Road.

Sitting on twenty-eight acres, thirteen of which are planted to pinot noir, the estate house is a modern facility with views overlooking Sonoma County. From the moment you walk up and are greeted with a glass of chardonnay to sitting on the patio or in the living room, you may never want to leave.

11) Jordan Winery ( www.jordanwinery.com ):

Located in Healdsburg, but within the Alexander Valley AVA, Jordan Winery produces Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon and Russian River Valley Chardonnay.

After a drive up the long hill and driveway, you will find the magnificent Jordan Winery Chateau that sits on the 1200 acres owned by the family. In addition to 112 acres of vineyards, there are eighteen acres of olive groves, a two-acre vegetable garden, fruit trees and flower garden, a bass lake, and livestock, including fifty-three black Angus cattle, seventeen chickens, two mini-donkeys, a maverick, and a goose. And, the winery is one hundred percent solar-powered, especially in the summer.

Visits to Jordan Winery are appointment only but you can select a library tasting, a winery tour, and library tasting or an estate tour and tasting which will take you by luxury shuttle around the immense property.

12. Pedroncelli Winery (https://www.pedroncelli.com)

On the home ranch, there are 33 aces of Zinfandel, with some of the oldest vines more than 100 years old.

Pedroncelli produces an extensive line that includes three Zinfandels, three Cabernet Sauvignons, three Chardonnays, and more. Make a reservation for a tasting at Pedroncelli and you can choose your own flight of wines or let Pedroncelli chose a preorganized flight for you.

13. ACORN Winery (https://acornwinery.com)

ACORN Winery, located in the Russian River Valley, is owned by Bill and Betsy Nachbaur. In 1990, they purchased the historic 32-acre Alegría Vineyard which included eight-and-a-half acres planted to heritage grapes dating back to 1890.

The Alegría Vineyard is certified sustainable, and Bill and Betsy are maintaining the tradition of the vineyard with field blends. Twenty-six acres are planted to approximately 40 different grape varieties, including heritage grapes, such as Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, Carignan, and Alicante Bouschet, as well as Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, and Dolcetto. They also have many other lesser-known varieties, such as Freisa, Graciano, Plavac Mali (from Croatia), and Liatiko (from Crete), to name a few. The diverse grape varieties grow together, are harvested together, are crushed together, and are co-fermented.

ACORN Winery specializes in interesting and delicious field blends. Book a tasting in advance and you will likely be joined by either Betsy or Bill who will share a selection of their wines in a casual, private tasting.

14. Benziger Family Winery (https://www.benziger.com)

The Benziger Family created their family winery in 1980 after purchasing the Wegener Ranch on Sonoma Mountain in Glen Ellen. The first winery in Napa and Sonoma County to be certified as a Biodynamic winemaker, the Benzigers have farmed their 86-acre property using certified Biodynamic, organic, and sustainable farming methods for more than 20 years.

Rated among The 7 Best Sonoma County Wine Tours by Winecountry.com and USA Today Readers Choice Awards winner of the Best Winery Tour, a visit to Benziger is not complete without an in-depth tour of the biodynamically farmed estate. Book the Biodynamic Vineyard Tram Tour to get a broad overview of the property, the history of the winery, and the winery's Biodynamic farming practices. Visit the insectary, a garden of plants that attract beneficial insects, the wine cave, and see the Scottish Highlander cattle and sheep whose job it is to eat the weeds, till the soil with their hooves, and fertilize the vines.

15. Ram’s Gate Winery (https://ramsgatewinery.com)

Ram’s Gate, founded in 2011, sits on a 28-acre estate in which the Sonoma Valley ends on the south side of the vineyard, the Sonoma Coast on the east, and Carneros on the west. Primarily Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers, Ram’s Gate also makes small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Blanc. Ram’s Gate offers a diverse selection of wines ranging from blends that express the diversity of the Sonoma region to single-vineyard wines that speak to where they are from.

Reserve one of the experiences offered by Ram’s Gate, ranging from a seated wine tasting to a caviar experience. Between May and October, Ram’s Gate offers the Sip and Savor at the Pond Experience where you can relax in a cabana or in Adirondack chairs around the pond and enjoy a bottle of wine with friends. And if you bring your appetite, indulge in a wine and food pairing experience with five seasonal courses crafted by Executive Chef Ruby Oliveros paired with five wines, hand-selected by General Manager and Director of Winemaking Joe Nielsen.

Getting There

The southern end of Sonoma Valley is about an hour north of the Bay Area, accessible through Marin to the west or through Vallejo to the east. Northern areas of Sonoma can take 3 to 4 hours to reach from the Bay Area directly, so be sure to map out the route in advance. Since it is a large area, visitors are best advised to rent a car and have plenty of time to fully explore it.

Private day trips and tours through Sonoma Valley are also offered by Hansom Tours . Check current flight deals into San Francisco on Kayak.

Sonoma is quite close to Napa Valley, which runs parallel, to the east. However, mountain passes between the two are often very windy and can be quite dangerous to navigate, particularly at night. We recommend focusing on one valley or the other to fully enjoy the experience.

Frequently Asked Questions about Visiting Sonoma Wineries

How many wineries to visit for one day in sonoma.

When planning a delightful day trip through Sonoma’s wine country, it’s all about striking the perfect balance to make the most of your experience. While the number of Sonoma wineries to visit can vary based on your personal taste, travel tempo, and the particular vineyards on your list, most #Winetravelers aim for 3 to 4 wineries in a day. This leisurely pace allows you to savor the wine tastings, embark on fascinating tours, and truly appreciate the breathtaking landscapes without any time pressure. So, why not immerse yourself in the enchanting world of Sonoma wines and create memories that last a lifetime? Be sure to also set aside some time digesting food and wine within Healdsburg while you’re into the Sonoma region.

Is Napa Valley or Sonoma better?

Ah, the age-old question: Napa Valley or Sonoma? Which wine region should take the crown? Truth be told, each has its own unique charm and allure, making it difficult to pick just one as the ultimate winner. Napa Valley , renowned for its prestigious wineries and luxurious experiences, tends to be a magnet for those seeking opulence and glamour. On the other hand, Sonoma, with its laid-back atmosphere and diverse range of wineries, often captures the hearts of those yearning for a more relaxed and approachable vibe. Sonoma also tends to be more affordable. Either way, both regions are very close to each other, so you could get a taste of both if you have a few days to spare. In the end, the choice between Napa Valley and Sonoma boils down to personal preferences and what kind of wine adventure you’re craving. Are you dreaming of sipping world-class Cabernet Sauvignon amidst the glitz and grandeur? Napa Valley is calling your name! Or perhaps you’re seeking a tranquil escape where you can explore the hidden gems and savor a variety of delightful wines? Sonoma might just be your perfect match. Whichever destination you choose, rest assured that unforgettable experiences and exceptional wines await you.

Is Sonoma more affordable than Napa?

In general, Sonoma is often considered more affordable than Napa Valley, both in terms of wine tasting fees and other travel expenses like accommodations, dining, and transportation. While there are certainly luxurious and high-end experiences available in Sonoma, the region is known for its more laid-back, approachable atmosphere and a broader range of budget-friendly options. Wine tasting fees in Sonoma tend to be lower on average compared to those in Napa Valley, and there are more wineries with affordable or complimentary tastings. Additionally, accommodations and dining options in Sonoma often span a wider price range, making it easier to find something that suits your budget.

What is the average wine tasting fee in Sonoma?

Wine tasting fees in Sonoma can vary greatly depending on the winery, the type of tasting experience, and whether or not the fee includes a guided tour or food pairings. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $15 to $50 per person for a standard wine tasting at most wineries. However, some premium or more exclusive tasting experiences can cost upwards of $75 to $100 or more. Keep in mind that some wineries may waive the tasting fee if you purchase a bottle of wine, while others may offer complimentary tastings for wine club members or by special invitation. Also, if you’re a Visa Signature credit card holder, many Sonoma Wineries participate in discounted tasting and tour experiences. You can read our guide to the Sonoma Visa Signature credit card program here. It’s a good idea to research the wineries you’re interested in visiting to get an accurate idea of their tasting fees and any available discounts or promotions.

What is the best time of year to visit Sonoma wineries?

The best time of year to visit Sonoma wineries ultimately depends on your preferences and interests. However, there are certain times of the year that offer unique experiences and more favorable weather conditions. Here’s a quick overview of what to expect during different seasons in Sonoma: Spring (March-May): Spring is a beautiful time to visit Sonoma, as the vineyards awaken from their winter slumber and the landscape is adorned with vibrant wildflowers and lush greenery. The weather is mild and pleasant, making it perfect for outdoor activities and wine tasting. Spring is also less crowded than the peak summer and harvest seasons, so you can enjoy a more relaxed experience. Summer (June-August): Summer is a popular time to visit Sonoma, with warm, sunny days and plenty of events and festivals taking place. The vineyards are in full swing, and you can enjoy long days of wine tasting and outdoor activities. However, summer can also be quite crowded, and accommodations may be more expensive and harder to find. Fall (September-November): The fall season, particularly September and October, is a favorite time for many wine enthusiasts to visit Sonoma. The harvest season is in full swing, and the vineyards are bustling with activity as grapes are picked and crushed. The weather is still warm and pleasant, and the changing colors of the leaves create a picturesque backdrop. Keep in mind that this is a peak season for wine tourism, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodations. Winter (December-February): Winter is the low season in Sonoma, with cooler temperatures, rain, and fewer tourists. While the vineyards may not be as visually stunning during this time, you can still enjoy wine tastings and tours, as well as discounted accommodations and a more intimate experience. It’s also a great time to explore Sonoma’s dining scene, as many restaurants participate in the annual Sonoma County Restaurant Week.

Jordan Vineyard & Winery

jordan winery

Inspired by the great wine châteaus of France, Jordan Vineyard & Winery was founded in 1972 in honor of the powerful connection between wine, food, and hospitality. The label produces cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and sparkling wine, all of which enhance the gastronomic experience and are mainstays of French hosting.

A visit to the Jordan Winery estate is a true feast for the senses with culinary events, tours of the breathtaking estate, and much more. Designer Maria Khouri Haidamus recently reimagined the lobby and guest rooms, blending together French elegance and Californian ease.

Alfresco lunches, vineyard hiking adventures, and library tastings are just a few of the activities one can expect from a gorgeous day at the 1,200-acre Healdsburg estate. It's also home to one of the few California wineries that offer luxury accommodations on the property for members of Jordan Estate Rewards if you're seeking a truly immersive wine country experience.

Hanzell Vineyards

hanzell vineyards sonoma

A visit to Hanzell Vineyards begins with stunning ascent into the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, offering a harbinger of the spectacular vistas to come during your tasting. The winery was founded in 1953 by James D. Zellerbach who was one of the first American winemakers to introduce the Burgundian varietals of pinot noir and chardonnay to the region.

Today, those varietals still thrive at Hanzell, which has been owned by the de Brye family since 1975, thanks to its holistic approach to bio-diverse farming. Farm life is, charmingly, a central feature of any visit to Hanzell: Tastings occur in a wooden and stone barn overlooking one the of the property’s vineyards and animals—from turkeys and chickens to cats—may make an appearance. Reservations for tastings are required.

Three Sticks Wines

three sticks winery sonoma

Cap off a day of vineyard visiting with a tasting at Three Sticks Wines’ historic adobe home, just off the plaza in downtown Sonoma. Known as the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe, the 19th century building is a Sonoma landmark with rich ties to California history as it first belonged to Salvador Vallejo, brother of General Mariano Vallejo, who founded the town of Sonoma.

Today, it exudes contemporary comfort with interiors respectfully yet creatively reimagined by designer Ken Fulk, plus courtyards with mature plantings and transportive water features—an idyllic setting for sampling Three Sticks’ chardonnay and pinot noir produced from its nearby estate vineyards. Reservations are required and limited to six people. Upgrade your tasting by booking a food pairing experience or a "merroir" tasting, which offers oyster and caviar pairings.

Flowers Vineyard & Winery

sonoma wineries

While Flowers Vineyards & Winery 's House of Flowers looks like a hip, modern estate, its legacy runs deep. Husband and wife team Joan and Walt Flowers bought a stunning mountaintop piece of land on the first ridgeline of the Sonoma Coast, which was then uncharted territory for planting grapes, and yet, they planted pinot noir and chardonnay anyways. And now, after more than 30 years, Flowers Vineyards & Winery's minimal-intervention, sustainable wines have become a vital piece of California wine history.

The House of Flowers estate is home to indoor and outdoor tasting experiences, sprawling gardens, and a perfect location just seven minutes from downtown Healdsburg. Sip on Meghan Markle's favorite pinot noir and the 95-point 2018 Flowers Camp Meeting Ridge chardonnay alongside a seasonal picnic created by the House of Flowers Culinary Team or try a flight underneath the estate's picturesque outdoor patio. Reservations required.

Buena Vista Winery

sonoma wineries

Buena Vista Winery 's stunning, circa 1857 property is California's first premium winery and remains a key player in the region today. The California Historic Landmark is home to well-balanced, structured wines boasting just the right amount of acidity for a new world vino, making them an excellent representation of the state's vibrant wine country.

Buena Vista's original winery is open daily to visitors for a variety of tasting experiences. Our pick is the Grand Reserve Experience which offers private tastings of the label's exclusive wines in their historic wine caves with glorious ambiance. Founder's is the highest-rated collection of the label, and the port is not to be missed. Reservations required.

Hamel Family Wines Estate

sonoma wineries

Hamel Family Wines is a beloved label by experts and everyday drinkers alike for its commitment to top-quality, small-production wines made with organic and sustainable practices. It's equally as renowned for fabulous tasting experiences at the family's gorgeous wine estate that offer something for everyone—even teetotalers who are along for the ride.

Each wine experience is led by an estate ambassador and includes a tour of the property. You can't make a trip to Hamel Family Wines without the Reserve Experience, a personalized food and wine journey featuring thoughtful, seasonal pairings from the estate's executive chef. Guests are greeted with a glass of sauvignon blanc as they begin the tour and finish with a four-course dinner served with the label's best cabernet sauvignon blends. Reservations required.

Landmark Vineyards

sonoma wineries

Landmark Vineyards was founded in 1974 and is famous for producing exceptional chardonnay and pinot noir. Grapes are aged in French oak barrels to bring aromatic, complex, and expressive wines to life in the California vernacular, while nodding to the old world way of doing things.

Landmark is home to two tasting rooms, one in Kenwood, and the other in Healdsburg. The former, shown here, is located in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains and offers tastings of the label's most renowned wines, plus small production, winery-only bottles. Horticulture lovers will adore the Sensory Tasting at the estate's lush gardens that allows guests to experience wines alongside fresh herbs and flowers to further explore the sensory aspects of enjoying wine.

Scribe Winery

sonoma wineries

Scribe Winery has developed a cult following for its terroir-driven wines since fourth-generation California farmers (and brothers) Andrew and Adam Mariani brought their passion for sustainable agriculture to viticulture. Their chef sister, Kelly Mariani, is also part of the family venture and frequently hosts Scribe dinners that feature produce grown on the estate property.

The Scribe Farm & Winery—featuring charming 19th century Mission-style home on grounds that have been making wine since before prohibition—is currently only open to members of the Scribe Viticulture Society . The membership model makes for a fabulous opportunity for wine enthusiasts to connect on the property, at events around the country, and to discover the label's best bottles and latest releases before anyone else. Membership currently required.

Aperture Estate

sonoma wineries

Jesse Katz has certainly made a name for himself in the world of wine with Aperture Cellars , which he founded in 2009. The winemaker loves Sonoma for its ability to offer "new world fruit and old world elegance." While cabernet sauvignon is the signature offering of Aperture, the label's other offerings are all highly lauded and favorites of wine experts and enthusiasts alike.

Aperture Estate opened in Summer 2020 and is ready to welcome guests to the art- and design-centric structure just two miles from downtown Healdsburg. There are a variety of ways to enjoy a tasting at this fabulous destination, and the Soil and Site Series Experiences offer insights into Katz's passion for the region's terroir and the soil that brings such richness to his creations. Reservations required.

Gundlach Bundschu Winery

sonoma wineries

Gundlach Bundshcu Winery , affectionately known as "GunBun," is California's oldest family-owned winery and is one of the region's most renowned producers. Named "Rhinefarm," the wine estate has been producing grapes since 1858 and offers 11 varietals today. The label's gewürztraminer is a favorite and pays homage to the family's roots, as founder Jacob Gundlach brought over this grape from his homeland in the mid 19th century.

The bucolic Rhinefarm is a must-see for oenophiles, history buffs, and travel aficionados alike, as the property features an abundance of opportunities for learning more about GunBun and California's rich wine history. The private tastings offer exclusive ways to explore the heritage and diversity of this historic estate. Reservations required.

Lytton Springs at Ridge Vineyards

ridge vineyards

Ridge Vineyards is famous for single-vineyard, "pre-industrial" winemaking that relies more on the impeccability of the grounds and mother nature than machinery and additives. The sustainable winery even labels every action and ingredient used to produce each bottle. While Ridge focuses primarily on reds, the label also offers highly rated chardonnay.

Ridge Vineyards has two estates that hold tasting experiences: Lytton Springs in Healdsburg (shown here) and Monte Bello in Cupertino. The Lytton Springs property features a Century Tour & Library Tasting that immerses visitors into the world of sustainable California winemaking and allows one to experience the best Ridge Vineyards vintages from the property's gorgeous terrace overlooking 155-year-old grapes. Reservations required.

Villa Fiore at Ferrari Carano Vineyards & Winery

sonoma wineries

Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery grows its grapes across 24 vineyards and six appellations, and it now has two winemaking locations that focus on reds and whites, respectively. The Estate Winery, where the brand's white wines are made, resides in Dry Creek Valley and houses the breathtaking Villa Fiore Wine Shop & Tasting Room.

Here, visitors will be able to peruse through lush gardens, taste an array of varietals, enjoy panoramic views of the valley, and even enjoy a spectacular, Italian-style Sunday brunch on the terrace if visiting between April and October. We suggest the Enoteca Reserve Wine Tasting, which offers the most exclusive experience with the brand's smaller production, hard-to-find wines and best vintages in the villa's underground cellar. Reservations required.

Wines at Hartford are not fined or filtered, preserving every ounce of flavor and texture from the vine in every sip. The grapes are not crushed during their winemaking process. Instead, they are cold-soaked and stirred in open-top fermentors to extract optimum color and mouth feel. The resulting wine is spectacular. Try the exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Old Vine Zinfandel from their wine cellars (with a stupendous library of vintages) while enjoying the outdoor BBQ.

  • Why we chose it: Dry farming practices at Emeritus Vineyards create distinctly dry and refreshing glasses of wine.
  • Who it’s for: People looking for a relaxing getaway – and a place to top up their electric vehicle!

Taste the Best of Sonoma Wines at Emeritus Vineyards

Experience the breathtaking views at Emeritus Vineyards, a dry-farmed and sustainable vineyard in North Sebastopol. The atmosphere here is equal parts elegant and rustic. You’ll see wall-to-wall glass doors on the former-apple-barn tasting room that open up onto an expansive terrace. Dry farming means no supplemental irrigation is used. The vines are only watered through natural rainfall. Since rains are scarce in California summers, the roots have to dig deep for water. The helps to prevent excess sugars in the grapes while preserving delightful acidity. Emeritus takes sustainability seriously. They even offer visitors both universal and Tesla charging stations for electric cars. So you can refresh your palette and your battery at the same time. But don’t confuse dry farming with the Sonoma County Wine from the Dry Creek AVA. Only a few of the Dry Creek wineries are actually dry-farmed.

  • Why we chose it: If it’s good enough for the president, then you need to try it. Plus, the view is pretty spectacular.
  • Who it’s for: Anyone with a penchant for sparkling wine, and those looking for a good cause to contribute to during their wine tour.

Celebrating Tradition and Excellence: Iron Horse Winery in Sonoma

Green Valley is home to a vineyard producing California’s most celebrated sparkling wines. Iron Horse has been handcrafting estate-exclusive and exquisite bottles of bubbly for decades. And they’ve named the place after the railroad stop that crossed the property in the 1890s. Iron Horse has truly perfected their craft, and it shows. Their sparkling wines have been served at the White House for six consecutive presidential administrations. They also produce a limited-production Blanc de Blancs with National Geographic, contributing a portion of the proceeds to protect the world’s oceans. Now that’s something we can “cheers” to.

  • Why we chose it: Lambert Bridge provides an absolutely idyllic location to taste wine. They also have a particularly exceptional Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Who it’s for: Anyone who wants to enjoy some small-lot wines in a beautiful and intimate setting.

Indulge in a Unique Wine Experience at Lambert Bridge Winery in Sonoma

Lambert Bridge Winery lies nestled among forested redwood hills just west of its namesake trestle bridge. The grounds are a joy to visit, boasting lavish gardens and rolling hills. The wines are cultivated carefully here. They use berry-by-berry sorters, small-lot fermentors, and pedigree French oak barrels to extract the perfect balance, complexity, and concentration of flavor. Sit on the shaded patio and watch butterflies dance across the garden. Or enjoy your wine from the intimate picnic vistas or stunning redwood tasting room.

  • Why we chose it: Marimar provides a different wine experience than any other Californian winery. You’ll swear you’ve been transported to Catalonia!
  • Who it’s for: Lovers of Spanish-style wine – this is the real deal.

Solar-Powered Sonoma Winery: Marimar Estate Vineyards

Marimar Estate Vineyards is unique in California because it is totally European in style. The planting density is 2000 vines per acre, four times that of Californian tradition. This high density promotes root competition and reduces yield, but the fruit that does come forth is more flavorful, refined, and balanced. The entire property at Marimar is 100% solar-powered. And they incorporate thoughtful, sustainable practices when possible. For example, they have beehives to aid plant growth and cover crops to keep harmful pests at bay. When you walk through the doors, you step straight into Catalonia, as winemaking equipment, furniture, and crockery were all brought over from Spain. Fifth-generation Torres family member Christina Torres was recently appointed General Manager of the family estate winery. She previously worked with Jackson Family Wines.

Stop by and relax by the fireplace while sipping some of the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir on offer.

  • Why we chose it: VJB is as close as you can get to a trip to Italy – and that Italian hospitality is hard to beat.
  • Who it’s for: People who want to try some unique Italian wine varietals while partaking in pizza on the piazza.

Taste Rare Italian Varietals at VJB Cellars in Sonoma’s Vineyards

Now it’s time for a quick trip to Tuscany (that is, as close as you can get to it without leaving Sonoma). VJB Cellars is quintessentially Italian, from the warm hospitality to the wood-oven-fired pizza to the stunning Tuscan-style villa. At VJB Cellars, you’ll be able to taste some hard-to-find Italian varietals. This is your place if you’ve ever wanted to try Sagrantino, Nebbiolo, Nero d’Avolo, or Tocai Friulano. In fact, the family produces over 20 types of wine for you to sip and savor. You can even enjoy some delicacies from their Italian marketplace while you sip your wine on the piazza.

  • Why we chose it: Three Sticks has some of the best Chardonnay around. You simply can’t miss the Adobe if you’re passing through Sonoma.
  • Who it’s for: History buffs, Chardonnay-lovers, or those looking to add a little Mexican flare to their wine tasting trip.

Discovering History and Wine at Three Sticks, a Sonoma Winery

Visiting Three Sticks is like being transported back in time. The tasting room rests in the historic Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe, one of the few remaining structures from California’s Mexican Period. Built-in 1842, the Adobe has been lovingly restored by the team at Three Sticks. It is now an iconic landmark right in the heart of Sonoma. But Three Sticks isn’t only about the ambiance – it regularly produces award-winning Chardonnay wines. Drop by for a taste of these Sonoma delicacies, and enjoy a meal from their renowned partner restaurant, El Dorado Kitchen.

  • Why we chose it: The “Zero Manipulation” winemaking methods result in some unique and flavorful wines.
  • Who it’s for: Fans of Zinfandel wine – this here is some of the best.

Sonoma’s Family-Operated Peterson Winery: A Vineyard with Character

Dry Creek is home to some of Sonoma’s best Zinfandel wine – and Peterson Winery is a cut above. That might have something to do with their unique wine-making approach, which they call “Zero Manipulation.” This low-tech yet high-touch approach produces soulful wines with amazing characteristics.  Peterson Winery is completely family owned and operated. The Peterson family has been making wine here for over 30 years, and has learned how to truly maximize the flavors each bottle of wine. Even more amazing? They do it all sustainably.

  • Why we chose it: Hanzell Vineyards has one of the best vineyard tours in the region, and the passion of the staff is contagious.
  • Who it’s for: Those looking to learn a little extra about winemaking while being greeted by some truly adorable animals.

Hanzell Vineyard: Where Wine, Nature, and Animals Come Together in Sonoma

Hanzell Vineyard was founded by James D. Zellerbach 1953 with the hopes of creating wines that could compete on the world stage. We would say he’s done it; the vineyard produces truly exceptional wines. But it’s not just the wine that makes Hanzell stand out. It’s the people.  Every staff member is passionate about winemaking, and super informative about the process. Your personalized and intimate tour will teach you all about the biodynamic farming, geography of the landscape, and history of the caves.  At Hanzell, they practice “Holistic Integrated Farming” which makes use of natural nutrient cycles and helps reduce their carbon footprint. They hope to one day be 100% self-sustained, but in the meantime, any material brought in must be ethical and Certified Organic. Check nutritional on wines here . And, while you tour the fascinating property, you may just meet sheep, chickens, deer, baby piglets, Edsel the cat, or Scout and Radley – the Maremma Livestock Guardian Dogs. The animals are all SO sweet and friendly, and can only add joy to your visit.

Sangiacomo is undoubtedly one of the best wineries in Sonoma. While their tasting room is still relatively under the radar, it’s somewhere every wine lover should be aware of.

The Sangiacomo family has been growing wine grapes for three generations, and their fruit is some of the most sought-after in the Valley. Many well-known Sonoma wineries use grapes from their vineyards to craft award-winning wines.

As of the most recent generation, the Sangiacomo family also crafts wine under their own label and hosts tastings in their Sonoma tasting room. Surrounded by vineyards on all sides, enjoy sips of incredible wines while taking in the wine country views from their relaxing patio.

Sonoma Wineries FAQs

How many wineries are in Sonoma?

There are over 425 wineries in Sonoma. That means there’s something for everyone!

What wine is Sonoma known for?

Sonoma wineries are most known for their expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  However, the AVA is broken down into 19 sub-AVAs with something unique about each and every one. Some areas are better known for other varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec.

What to wear to Sonoma wineries?

Generally speaking, Sonoma wineries are considered “wine country casual” – i.e. cute sundresses and flat shoes for women and nice pants with dress shoes for men. You can read our complete guide to what to wear wine tasting here !

How to get around Sonoma wineries?

In Sonoma wine country, it’s recommended to rent a car or hire a driver. Uber is difficult and unreliable at best. If you want to do Sonoma without renting a car, I recommend staying in downtown Sonoma and visiting the tasting rooms that are located in downtown and nearby. Most downtown Sonoma hotels will even offer bikes for you to take wine tasting!

The best wineries in Sonoma

The best wineries in Sonoma offer a tasting experience as gorgeous as their wines

Napa  may get all the attention, but Sonoma is where Northern California locals go to relax in the sun. In fact, if Napa is all wine-fueled luxury—with its chic wine tastings and fancy  wine tours —then think of Sonoma as its laid-back cousin, the one who shows up with a picnic blanket and an unassuming bottle of award-winning vino before a hike.

In fact, you've probably already tasted some of Sonoma's best cabs, merlots and sauvignon blancs in restaurants across the country, but there’s nothing like a day in Wine Country or, better yet, an overnight stay at one of the finest Sonoma hotels , to make you fall in love with this beautiful land. Whether you prefer rustic-chic tasting rooms, historic chateaus or brisk vineyard hiking, you’ll find it at the best wineries in Sonoma.

Best wineries in Sonoma

1.  emeritus vineyards.

Emeritus Vineyards

When Brice Cutrer Jones learned of a piece of land opening up for sale in the Russian River Valley named Hallberg Ranch, he knew what a unique opportunity it was. This was back in 1999, and Jones had already built a successful winery, Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards. He decided to transform the land from a farm to a winery focused on pinot noir. Over the years, he's done just that, with Emeritus producing award-winning pinot noir varietals. Uniquely, all of the wine is dry-farmed using deep roots that enhance their complexity. Today, the winery is run by his daughter, Mari Jones, and winemaker David Lattin. The tasting room is elevated yet comfortable, with various seating options, as well as an outdoor terrace overlooking the vineyards. Appointment only.

2.  Donum Estate

  • price 3 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Donum Estate (@donumestate)

Donum Estate has two primary focuses: aged pinot and contemporary art. Wine tastings here are thoughtful, private affairs that include samples of pinot noir during a stroll around the 200-acre estate. The dichotomy between the natural surroundings—150-year-old olive trees, vineyards, and an organic farm—and museum-worthy sculptures is stunning. Curated and owned by Allan and Mei Warburg, the collection features 30 large-scale works by well-known artists from around the world including Ai Weiwei, Yayoi Kusama, Louise Bourgeois, Keith Haring, and Tracey Emin. Appointment only .

3.  Gundlach Bundschu

  • price 2 of 4
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gundlach Bundschu Winery (@gunbunwine)

Just down the road from the haute hipsters of Scribe Winery lies Gundlach Bundschu, California’s oldest family-owned winery. With a century-old pedigree and a sixth-generation vintner at the helm, Gun Bun is a lively and idyllic place to taste; the 320-acre property is shaded by towering olive trees and bordered by a scenic pond. Gun Bun is also known for its weekend concerts, including the annual Huichica  music fest. Don’t miss the pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon, as well as a refreshing gewürztraminer. Appointment only .

4.  Hamel Family Wines

Hamel Family Wines

Funded in 2014 by a family of University of Wisconsin alums—hence the jaunty badger gracing all the labels — the Hamel estate is a real gem with a sleek, modern tasting room designed by Gould Evans architecture. The space features 18-foot windows with views of Sonoma Mountain, an outdoor deck overlooking 100-year-old olive trees and an infinity pool, and a 12,000-square-foot wine cave. The vineyard employs organic and biodynamic methods, producing wine in limited quantities. Tastings can include cheese and charcuterie pairings all the way up to a four-course meal. Appointment only .

5.  Scribe Winery

Scribe Winery

Scribe Winery produces vibrant, terroir-driven wines. The property is managed by fourth-generation wine-makers and brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani and is known for its cool, laid-back vibe which attracts a young, hip crowd. There is no fancy tasting room here; when you arrive, you'll be given a blanket and encouraged to find a spot for yourself in the shade of a tree or at a nearby picnic table. Snack on fruit and nuts grown on the property, and the wine will come to you in the form of chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling and, perhaps the most unique—and delicious—of the bunch, sylvaner. Appointment only .

6.  Hanzell Vineyards

Hanzell Vineyards

This scenic, historic winery was originally founded in 1953 by ambassador James D. Zellerbach, who returned to the U.S. inspired after a sojourn in Burgundy, and is known for standout pinot noir and chardonnay. Perched at the southern tip of the Mayacamas range, the vineyard (owned by the de Byre family since 1975) offers bird’s-eye views of Sonoma Valley and the San Pablo Bay. Though the facilities date back to 1950s, the small-batch wines are produced using state-of-the-art technology. Appointment only .

7.  Viansa Sonoma Winery

Viansa Sonoma Winery

For a private tasting worth splurging for, reserve one of Viansa’s private outlooks, which range from intimate nooks to pillow-decked open-air cabanas. From the front terrace, you can gaze out over the estate vineyards, replanted in 2015 with 10 acres of pinot noir and 15 acres of chardonnay. The hilltop property includes 33 acres of vineyards in all, plus nearly 100 acres of picturesque wetlands, a gourmet market and a wood-fired pizza oven for all manner of food to pair with flights of pinot, chardonnay and sangiovese. Ap pointment only .

8.  Buena Vista Winery

Buena Vista Winery

The oldest commercial winery in California, Buena Vista's historic charm remains—as do the original Champagne cellars, now used as wine production facilities. The Carneros grounds feature a museum of 19th-century wine tools (more interesting than it sounds), a stylish lounge devoted to French bubbly, and tranquil picnic grounds. The winery’s location at the top of the San Pablo Bay means a diverse variety of microclimates, ideal for varietals ranging from merlot and syrah to chardonnay and pinot. Request a cave tasting, which concludes with samples drawn straight from the barrel.

9.  Three Sticks

Three Sticks

Situated in the historic Vallejo-Castanada adobe, this downtown Sonoma winery is a haven for design lovers. Although the building received a grand facelift from San Francisco interior design legend Ken Faulk, it remains one of the few structures from California’s early Spanish Period. Three Sticks’ produces small batches of wines grown in various local vineyards. Sip it while you can—the winery only produces 4,000 cases a year, and much of it sells out before leaving Sonoma Square. Appointment only .

10.  Seghesio Family Vineyards

Seghesio Family Vineyards

One of Sonoma's oldest wineries, Seghesio Family Vineyards is known for producing a wide variety of zinfandels from sustainably-planted vineyards across Sonoma County. Taste a flight of their bright, bold vintages at the Italian estate's grand tasting room along with food pairings. In the Old Vine Cellar Lounge downstairs, sip Seghesio's best at a seated tasting surrounded by the winery's original redwood tanks. Appointment only .

11.  Francis Ford Coppola Winery

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

Yes, this is a winery by six-time Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola. Don't let the fact that it's founded by a celebrity deter you, though: the wine is excellent. Plus, it's worth a visit to check out the property alone, which is far more than a winery and more like a full-on resort. You'll find wine-tasting bars, two restaurants, a full bar, a swimming pool with cabanas, a movie gallery, a performing arts Pavillion and a park with bocce courts. Coppola likes to refer to the winery as a "wine wonderland," and we do not object.

12.  Ravenswood Winery

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ravenswood Winery (@ravenswoodwinery)

Founded in 1976 by Joel Peterson, a scientist and microbiologist with a side gig as a wine consultant, Ravenswood made a name for itself with zinfandel and, these days, Peterson is known as the 'godfather of zin.' The winery's fruity, full-bodied wines— which also include chardonnay, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon—are produced from grapes harvested throughout Wine Country. Sample flights from an Adirondack chair on the terrace, tour the barrel room or taste rare bottles in the library cellar.

Best Wineries for First-Time Visitors

Best Sonoma Wineries for First-Time Visitors.

Sonoma County wineries are anticipating a new beginning with the recent easing of pandemic restrictions. So, with spring around the corner and things looking up (fingers crossed they stay that way), this is a great time to explore vineyards, tasting rooms and winery patios at some of the more than 425 wineries in Sonoma County. Here is a short list of the ones that are close to the town of Sonoma:

Buena Vista for a taste of history:

Founded in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy, Buena Vista Winery is the second-oldest winery in California and a worthwhile destination for history buffs. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the winery is currently owned by the Boisset Collection and underwent a renovation in 2012.  Choose the tour and you’ll catch a glimpse of the renovated Champagne Cellars and historic wine caves, followed by a wine flight in the Press House or outdoor courtyard. The Wine Tool Museum is slated to reopen this summer. Tastings from $25. Open 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday; and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 18000 Old Winery Road, Sonoma, 800-926-1266

Gloria ferrer caves & vineyards.

Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards 1

  • Address: 23555 Arnold Dr, Sonoma, CA 95476, United States

José Ferrer, in the 1980s, ventured from Barcelona, Spain, to Sonoma, California, with his wife Gloria in search of the ultimate region to make sparkling wine. They settled upon Carneros and established Gloria Ferrer . For the Ferrers, whose Spanish sparkling wine growing experience goes back generations, the potential of Los Carneros was unmistakable, even before it became an established AVA.

Specifically, Sonoma’s warm days, cool nights, predictable winds, summer fog, and a long growing season coax grapes to maturity slowly and consistently with a desirable balance of sugar and acidity. Thus it is the perfect environment for Pinot Noir vines, Chardonnay vines and sparkling wines.

Their house style of sparkling wine is rooted in a dynamic blend of innovation and consistency. Here the winemakers use creativity, ingenuity, and a gentle hand to reveal the distinctive Carneros terroir through Pinot Noir-dominant sparkling wines.

Editor’s Note: This is the first sparkling winery in Carneros.

Buena Vista Winery

Buena Vista Winery 1

  • Address: 18000 Old Winery Rd, Sonoma, CA 95476, United States

Buena Vista Winery has been producing premium wine since before California, and Sonoma Valley became well-known worldwide for wine. Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California’s first winery, and its history is colorful.

Today, the legend is being re-born under the vision of Jean-Charles Boisset. Just outside the town of Sonoma, the original winery is now a California historical landmark and home to our Winery, Tasting Room, and Visitor’s Center.

Through traditional techniques and modern enological knowledge, we make wines that tell the story of viniculture from the historical to the contemporary to genuinely reflect the character and style of each grape and vineyard.

Editor’s Note: This is the oldest winery in Sonoma.

Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery

Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery 1

  • Address: 8761 Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg, CA 95448, United States

Don and Rhonda Carano, natives of Reno, Nevada, and second-generation Italian-Americans, founded Ferrari-Carano in 1981. Don and Rhonda were introduced to the beauty of Northern Sonoma County in 1979 while searching for wines to enhance the wine lists at Eldorado. They eventually purchased a 60-acre parcel in the Alexander Valley.

Realizing this area’s potential, the Caranos’ began to acquire additional vineyard land in Dry Creek Valley in 1985. The first wines bearing the Ferrari-Carano label were released in 1987. Those first wines were a 1986 Fumé Blanc and a 1985 Alexander Valley Chardonnay. Today, Ferrari-Carano produces those wines and over 20 other white, red, and dessert wines.

Editor’s Note: In 1973, Don established the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Downtown Reno. Today, Eldorado Hotel is the area’s premier location for fine dining, excellent wine lists, and impeccable service.

Truett Hurst Winery

Truett Hurst Winery 1

  • Address: 5610 Dry Creek Rd, Healdsburg, CA 95448, United States

The two founding families of Truett Hurst had storied careers in wine long before joining forces. Phil Hurst is a UC Davis winemaking alumni, and Paul Dolan has been growing wine grapes for over 40 years. However, both wanted to join forces, to build a legacy for future generations. The Dolan family has always been passionate about wine and winemaking.

Paul’s great grandfather left north Italy in the early 19th century. He settled in Sonoma County and established the Italian Swiss Colony. The Truett name originates from the first vineyard planted by the Dolan family three generations ago to supply grapes to that historic brand. The Hurst’s had a vision for making dark, rich, and robust wines from the famed terroir of the Dry Creek Valley. From this combination of passion and vision, Truett Hurst was born.

Editor’s Note: Truett Hurst is a vibrant 26 acre certified organic and Biodynamic vineyard and farm that is home to a small herd of goats and sheep, a restored creek and riparian ecosystem, seasonal steelhead and coho salmon, osprey, red tail hawks, golden eagles, blue herons, white cranes, ducks, and even an occasional otter.

Matanzas Creek Winery

  • Address: 6097 Bennett Valley Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95404, United States

Matanzas Creek is in the remote but breathtakingly beautiful Bennett Valley region of Sonoma County. Since its launch in 1977, the winery has built its reputation on Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. These are two varieties that thrive in Sonoma’s temperate climate.

Still, Matanzas Creek also produces Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Bordeaux-style reds, the most famous wines of Sonoma. The winery’s fruit comes from sustainably farmed estate vineyards scattered throughout the county’s AVAs.

In addition to its wines, Matanzas Creek is also famous for its spectacular lavender gardens. The unique character and beauty of Matanzas Creek’s winery, vineyards, lavender fields, and gardens have earned the Estate worldwide recognition as a premier California wine country destination.

Editor’s Note: The winery and stunning mission-style Tasting Room are in the heart of Sonoma Valley, surrounded by estate vineyards. The bell tower houses a 1,000-pound bronze bell cast by the Marinelli Foundry in Italy. It chimes every hour and can be heard throughout the valley.

Ram’s Gate Winery

Ram's Gate Winery 1

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

Francis Ford Coppola Winery 1

  • Address: 300 Via Archimedes, Geyserville, CA 95441, United States

Francis Ford Coppola was influenced by Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, which was the inspiration for all the modern amusement parks. The beautiful theater pavilions with the curtains painted with peacock feathers, the little ballet performances, the rides, but more importantly, the cafes and the refreshments, gave the sense of being in a children’s garden.

Thus, Francis Ford Coppola Winery aimed to become such a park. It is a place where the family can go and enjoy, where there are things for kids to do, so they can be close to their parents who are sampling wines and foods.

Sonoma vs. Napa

There’s so much to love about California wine country that choosing between Napa and Sonoma almost feels like choosing a favorite child. Both have their unique charms, incredible food, memorable experiences, fantastic scenery, and, of course, delicious wine.

An essential piece of information to remember is that there is Napa Valley and the town of Napa. And there’s Sonoma Valley and the town of Sonoma. It can get confusing sometimes, especially for people who haven’t visited either before.

Nevertheless, Sonoma County and Napa County are next doors, but there’s a big mountain between them, so it takes a while to drive from one valley to the next. That’s why it’s not a good idea to book a morning tasting in Santa Rosa and then an afternoon tasting at a winery in Yountville. You’ll just be spending the day in a car rushing, and that’s so not the vibe for wine tasting.

Truthfully, one is not better than the other, but they are both very different. A better thing to know is which region is more your style. Generally, in Napa Valley, you can hit the high road in a limo while the scenery glimmers with Michelin stars and more than 95 point ratings. While in Sonoma County, you can drive slowly down a dirt road to a casual outdoor patio with inexpensive tastings.

The second most renowned North American wine region, Sonoma , has long suffered the fate of being compared to the more famous wine valley that runs parallel to it: Napa . But outside of sharing a border, these two regions couldn’t be more different.

Sonoma wine country is actually double the size of Napa Valley, extending far beyond the town of Sonoma to worthwhile destinations like Healdsburg and the Russian River Valley, the funky town of Sebastopol, and even the Pacific Ocean.

While Napa Valley has zeroed in on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varieties, Sonoma is far more diverse.

Home to more than 60 grape varieties (though Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the stars) and upwards of 400 wineries spread throughout 19 AVAs, Sonoma is also known for its abundance of farms, creameries, breweries and distilleries.

Due to its vastness, there are two common mistakes visitors to Sonoma make. They either plan only a day or two, hardly scratching the surface, or they schedule winery appointments, meals and hotel stays without realising it can easily take an hour to get from one to the next. As a result, they’re constantly running late to reservations on what’s supposed to be a relaxing holiday. By focusing instead on a specific area, you can spend time experiencing rather than rushing, and really immerse yourself in the best of what Sonoma has to offer.

The town of Sonoma: The perfect place to begin

Understandably, most people who visit Sonoma wine country start with the town of Sonoma. An easy, one-hour drive from San Francisco, Sonoma is anchored by the charming and historic Sonoma Plaza . The birthplace of the California flag, this square played a pivotal role in the state’s declaration of independence from Mexican rule. The historic buildings and adobes are now occupied by shops, wine tasting rooms, hotels and restaurants. Miles of vineyards and winery estates surround the town, offering a plethora of tasting options.

Check into the MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa for the weekend. Located in the heart of Sonoma and within a mile of the Sonoma Plaza, this idyllic resort recently completed a massive transformation.

The Spa at MacArthur is accented with modern, luxury elements, new treatment rooms, locker rooms complete with steam showers, an outdoor Hydrotherapy Spa Garden and Lounge, and a brand-new outdoor pool space complete with private pool cabanas. The Spa at MacArthur’s treatment menu offers a range of unique, bespoke therapies including skincare, body renewal treatments, massage techniques and 100-minute Journeys that include holistic healing elements.

Relax at the pool or spa before dinner at Layla, MacArthur’s Mediterranean restaurant, and then enjoy a nightcap at The Bar, a Gatsby-era lounge serving signature cocktails and late-night nibbles.

Embark on an easy stroll to the Sonoma Plaza for a Lavender Mist mimosa and breakfast in the back garden of Sunflower Caffé , known for simple and healthy dishes made from hyper-local ingredients. Afterwards, take a walk around the square, pop into interesting-looking shops, and visit Sonoma State Historic Park , where, for a $3 admission fee, you can access six historical sites, including the Mission San Francisco Solano, the last of the 21 California missions built.

Book a lunchtime tasting at Three Sticks Wines , housed in the Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe, the longest-occupied residence from California’s Mexican Period. The food and wine pairing ($110) includes a flight of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (crafted by Bob Cabral, former winemaker for the renowned Williams Selyem) paired with five bites from Sonoma Plaza restaurant El Dorado Kitchen. Or, you can make it a three-course private lunch.

Schedule a second wine tasting in the intimate salon of Sojourn Cellars , which sources fruit for its Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from some of the top vineyards in Sonoma County. Moreover, Sojourn is unique in that it also crafts Cabernet Sauvignon from both Sonoma and Napa. Through Sojourn’s comparative tasting format, you’ll learn to identify the nuances of each vineyard source.

Dine at Valley , an unassuming, French-inspired wine bar, restaurant and bottle shop that opened inside an adobe in 2020. Valley’s list is focused on natural and minimal intervention wines and simple, shareable plates. It combines seasonal ingredients with international flavours like XO eggs, Don Bocarte anchovies, and lamb with garlic yoghurt and za’atar. End the night with a glass of Champagne from Sigh , a glamorous bubbly bar located just around the corner from Valley.

Following a light breakfast at The Porch at MacArthur, a grab-and-go café, drive out to the bucolic Carneros AVA, which spans parts of both Napa and Sonoma. Start the day at Donum Estate ; even though it’s only a 10-minute drive from the hotel, once there, it feels like a totally different world. The Explore Experience ($200 per person) includes an ATV tour of Donum’s impressive open-air art sculpture collection, working farm, lavender fields and vineyards, culminating in a private tasting of its finest wines. Crafted with minimal intervention, Donum’s lineup showcases the diversity and uniqueness of California’s top-producing Pinot Noir regions, including the Russian River, Anderson Valley and its home base of Carneros.

Turn left back on Highway 12 and, after a few miles, pull over at the old country roadhouse that reads Lou’s Luncheonette . No reservations, so you may have to wait for a table out on the back patio (often shared with a few chickens), but the array of fried chicken options is worth it.

Lou’s hearty fare has probably whetted your appetite for something a bit different, so a trip to Carneros might be the right choice. Among Gloria Ferrer ’s many tasting offerings is the Extended Tirage Experience ($125), a tasting of all of the house’s vintage and longer-aged sparkling wines. The experience showcases the ageability of sparkling wine over a 90-minute tasting session.

The first wine country outpost from world-renowned chef Michael Mina, Wit & Wisdom has been the talk of the town since opening in 2020. From seafood towers to handmade pasta, wood-fired pizzas and hearty meats, the best strategy here is to order several plates and share, though the craft cocktails and duck wings are a must-order. You’ll leave feeling stuffed, but your bed at MacArthur is less than a mile away.

Return to Sonoma Plaza for brunch at the girl + the fig , a Sonoma staple. This buzzing and classic French bistro serves up comforting country food made with local ingredients – croque monsieur, quiche Lorraine, duck confit – that will soak up all of the weekend’s imbibing. Before you leave, take one last stroll around the plaza to digest and purchase last-minute souvenirs.

The world’s most sustainable wine region offers far more than vino — though it does that beautifully as well.

As California wine goes, Sonoma County is a recognizable name, boasting some of the country's best pinot noir and chardonnay. But there's more to Napa's ample neighbor than meets the eye — or, in this case, palate. There are 425 wineries and 60,000 acres of vineyards — 99% of which are sustainable — but also 55-plus miles of coastline, including deserted sandy beaches, sheer cliffs, and turquoise coves. And then there are the epically beautiful inland landscapes containing glittering rivers, forested trails, and stalwart old-growth redwoods. There's history, too, from a 19th-century Spanish mission to landmarks dedicated to local luminaries, including author Jack London and Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz.

With three iconic valleys — Russian River, Dry Creek, and Alexander — Sonoma is the most sustainable wine region in the world with lots of permaculture and biodynamic farming of not only grapes but bounteous produce and plenty of sustainable and ethical farms raising livestock and producing dairy. Generally speaking, it's a slightly more laid-back and family-friendly destination than Napa, and the cost of wining, dining, and overnighting in Sonoma is typically more affordable.

Many small, friendly towns make up the county. Those include the colonial town of Sonoma itself with Mission San Francisco Solano; artsy up-and-coming Sebastopol; bucolic culinary destination Glen Ellen; architecturally significant '60s-era Sea Ranch; Petaluma with award-winning distilleries and small cheese farms; and Healdsburg, which has as much charm as it has immaculate food and drinks.

To reach this idyllic Eden, fly into Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) — nonstop from more than 10 major airports — if you're taking a weekend trip and want to avoid the traffic from the Bay Area. Otherwise, rent a car at SFO and drive the hour-plus up the 101. Then, prepare for your multi-sensory feast of an adventure to unfold. Here, find everything you need to know to savor Sonoma to the fullest, no matter when you go.

When to Visit Sonoma

As with most wine regions in the Northern Hemisphere, peak season in Sonoma is fall because of the yearly harvest. But after the exciting crush, as autumn’s flaming reds and oranges shape-shift into winter and winter blossoms into early spring, there’s lots to see and do — and also deals to be had. Mustard season, as January to April is known, is still quite sunny and, like the weather all year round, is subject to wild swings in temperature throughout a single day, so pack layers. That even goes for undeniably gorgeous — and typically incredibly busy — summer, since intensely hot afternoon temperatures can dip down low at night. Seafood lovers should also note that Dungeness crab season starts in November.

Things to Do in Sonoma

Wine may be the main event, but it’s far from the only attraction in Sonoma, where wellness and outdoor pursuits are aplenty. Hiking, cycling, horseback riding, canoeing , kayaking, and SUP-ing — the vast and spacious ecosystems are ripe with opportunities to breathe in fresh air and get physical. Camping is an option, too. There are wildflower walks, vineyard yoga classes, and ancient trees to hug at Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve. Spas scattered throughout Sonoma offer proven therapies and detoxifying rituals using farm-fresh ingredients from the fertile destination — think honey, lavender, and grapes, of course, plus seaweed and shells at The Lodge at Bodega Bay . Get into the mix at you-pick farms offering sustainably grown produce ranging from apples and peaches to olives and citrus.

As healthy as Sonoma can make you, there are numerous chefs at the ready to plump you back up with world-class cuisine, much of it truly Californian, fueled by the farms, ranches, and fishermen of Sonoma. Eating, specifically eating well, is a definite to-do in the wine region that claims the three-Michelin-star SingleThread Restaurant , where the husband-and-wife owners, a chef and a farmer respectively, produce each exquisite element of their 11-course tasting menu, informed by the local terroir as well as their time in Japan. Other reservations to snag ahead of time include the culinary couple’s plant-based Little Saint , the Michelin-starred Barndiva , homegrown chef Dustin Valette’s The Matheson , and the magnificent Farmhouse Restaurant .

Sonoma has a cheese trail for the dairy-obsessed, and for those craving variety, the town of Sebastopol features The Barlow. This 12-acre outdoor market district is home to distilleries and craft beer brewers as well as wineries (the Old World–styled Pax Wines is especially worth a stop), endless mouthwatering food options (everything from Detroit-style pizza to sushi), and the studios and shops of artisan makers who craft their products onsite.

Where to Stay in Sonoma County

Sonoma’s hotel scene is wonderfully diverse. For a rose-studded, wine-tinged stay with mythical cuisine, there’s Farmhouse Inn , where artisanal bath amenities are over the top, and the owners’ generational connections to nearby winemakers, patissiers, brewers, cheesemakers, and other talented individuals make for highly customized, heavenly stays. On a larger scale, Montage Healdsburg is a slice of paradise where guest bungalows overlook rows of vines, Hazel Hill restaurant serves up the most flavorsome bounty plucked from Sonoma’s rich soil, and experiences from hiking to beekeeping await.

Design aficionados will appreciate interior design master Jay Jeffers’ The Madrona , a lovingly reimagined Victorian manse that comprises 24 rooms and bungalows with breathtaking views plus lush gardens, intriguing art, and a restaurant worth dressing up for. Right along Healdsburg’s plaza, highly walkable options include the luxe Hotel Healdsburg , with chef Charlie Palmer’s Dry Creek Kitchen , and h2hotel , an eco-aware gem that leans boho rustic and boasts a living green roof, complimentary bikes, and a solar-heated creekside pool. Sister property Harmon Guest House has local art galore and a similarly sustainable vibe, with chic, spacious rooms and free yoga classes for guests.

In the heart of downtown Sonoma, there’s The Lodge at Sonoma Resort, Autograph Collection , a serene hideaway celebrating the down-to-earth spirit of Sonoma in a decidedly plush way, with some guest suites and cottages featuring outdoor soaking tubs and fireplaces, and a spa serving up treatments featuring found indigenous botanicals. Meanwhile, on the stunning Sonoma Coast, The Sea Ranch Lodge is a restored property and restaurant blending pristine natural scenes with iconic architecture.

Wineries to Visit in Sonoma County

As mentioned, there are more than 400 wineries in Sonoma County, which means there’s no risk of ever having to search for vino. That said, when planning a vacation — and booking tastings ahead of time, always advisable and often required — there are definite must-visit wineries throughout the region to keep in mind. The Donum Estate is one of the most stimulating and elegant winery experiences in the county, thanks to its delectable organic pinot noir and chardonnay, of course, but also the ever-growing collection of both architecture and monumental sculpture art. See world-class works by the likes of Ai Wei Wei, Yayoi Kusama, Tracey Emin, Doug Aitken, and Louise Bourgeois. Reserve the Transcend Experience for a pairing of estate and library wines with beautifully composed bites inside Studio Other Spaces’ prismatic Vertical Panorama Pavilion, and allot time to wander the regenerative, museum-like grounds.

Flowers Vineyards & Winery is equally an experience, with the opportunity for tastings in the House of Flowers that allow the sipper to truly appreciate the nuance and terroir of each wine, grown on the extreme Sonoma Coast since 1991 when the first organic estate vineyards were planted sustainably. Visit California’s oldest family-owned winery, Gundlach Bundschu , for 160-plus years of winemaking expertise that comes through in creative, cool-climate Bordeaux-style wines, soon to be certified regenerative organic. At Abbot’s Passage Winery & Mercantile in Glen Ellen, sit amid gnarled vines heavy with grapes to try sixth-generation vintner Katie Bundschu’s novel, experimental field blends that are beautifully named and happily surprising to the palette.

The adventurous estate with shuffleboard, bottle service, and multi-course shared-plate offerings is very family-friendly, as is Bricoleur Vineyards outside Healdsburg, where co-owners Mark Hanson and his daughter named their first sparkling rosé, Isla Rose California Brut Rosé, after her baby girl, the sixth generation of this storied Sonoma winemaking family. With easy-drinking wines, excellent food pairing and picnic options (plus wood-fired pizzas), and delightful grounds to explore, it makes for a fun half-day. (A father-and-daughter duo is also behind Vérité Wines , which has a salon 20 minutes from Healdsburg for intimate tastings.) Groups can spend even more time at Francis Ford Coppola Winery , where the spotlight is on the preeminent director’s many wines, but offerings also include two swimming pools, a full-service restaurant, bocce, and movie memorabilia.

With its 1,200-acre sustainable estate and fine culinary experiences, the renowned French-style Jordan Vineyard & Winery gives guests opportunities to immerse in all things local and thoughtful. Far smaller in production, immense care goes into the bottles at DaVero , a regenerative vineyard and winery growing grapes — such as Sagrantino — many Americans have never heard of under the ethos of, “Grow what belongs here. Be patient.” In Dry Creek Valley, the holistic and tranquil Truett Hurst takes a similar approach, producing vinos that authentically impart the tastes of the vineyards and the characters who make them. And worthy wine tasting rooms in Healdsburg include Bacchus Landing wine cooperative, cool coastal chardonnay and pinot noir operation Marine Layer , and sommelier-owned wine bar Maison Healdsburg .

Best Merlot

The word Merlot is derived from the word merle , which translates from the original French to describe the common blackbird. The grapes are very dark in color while ripening and maturing, and it’s not known for sure whether the variety was named for the color of the blackbird or that it may have been one of its favorite snacks. Merlot is the second most widely cultivated red grape in the world and the number one grape grown in France. The main variety in the St. Émilion and Pomerol appellations, on the right bank of the Garonne River in Bordeaux, it is vinified there either as the major grape in blends or as a single varietal.

Merlot has softer tannins than many red grapes including Malbec , Carmenere, or Cabernet Sauvignon , so although it will age well for decades, it is usually very drinkable shortly after release. Bottlings from Bordeaux can have a more pronounced floral aroma than you may find elsewhere, but well-made Merlot from around the globe usually have aromas and flavors of blueberry, black cherry, black currant, and vanilla. We would typically describe the tannins as velvety or suede-like, and you can expect soft leather or earthy notes in the palate. Outside of Bordeaux, Merlot thrives around the globe, but some of the best bottles on the market hail from Bolgheri, Napa, Sonoma, and Washington State . Here are nine to drink now.

PlumpJack’s original winery dates to the 1800s and today it is surrounded by more than 40 acres of land planted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines. Winemaker Aaron Miller started his university career with the dream of becoming a doctor but fell in love with winemaking after earning a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior from the University of California at Davis. PlumpJack 2021 Merlot opens with aromas of black cherry, red raspberry, and dried savory herbs that lead to flavors of brown baking spices, blackberry, mocha, and red plum cloaked in a sheath of feathery tannins.

Pierre Seillan began making wine at his family’s estate in Gascony, France and after 20 years in Bordeaux he was persuaded to make wine in Sonoma by the founder of Jackson Family Wines. Pierre reports the 2019 Verite growing season had abundant winter rainfall, April budbreak, and a hotter than average summer. His 2019 La Muse combines 90 percent Merlot, 5 percent Cabernet Franc, and 5 percent Malbec with deep ruby-garnet hues and aromas of Bing cherry, dried Mediterranean herbs, and red raspberry. It has bright acidity and silky tannins on the palate with flavors of red plum, red currant, and dark cherry.

Today, winemaking is headed by Chris Figgins who continues to craft exquisite wines. His 2022 Merlot is garnet colored with aromas of mocha, freshly baked black berry pie, and red plum. Alan David Hickinbotham first planted vines in McLaren Vale, Australia in 1971 and the estate remained under family ownership until it was sold in 2012. It’s interesting to note that the estate never produced wines under its own name until after the sale because prior to that grapes were purchased by numerous Australian wineries such as Penfolds and Hardys for their premium wines including Grange and Eileen Hardy Shiraz. The 2016 Revivalist is garnet colored with aromas of crushed violet petals, red plum, and a whiff of shale. It has bright acidity and plush tannins with flavors of red currant, pomegranate, and cranberry.

Now in its third generation, the family continues to make quality wines from both indigenous and international varieties. Their 2018 Merlot is garnet colored with aromas of black plum, ripe cherry, and fennel frond. It is full bodied on the palate with flavors of dried plum, brown baking spice, and black currant.

In the late 1990s Pierluigi Tolaini returned to his native Italy and purchased land in Tuscany with the intention of building a world class winery. He planted vines, built from the ground up, and hired Michel Rolland as a consultant. The team has produced consistently well-crafted wines from the onset but their 100 percent Merlot from 2018 is exceptional. It is garnet colored with aromas of red raspberry, black cherry, and cherry vanilla. Full bodied yet balanced, it has rounded tannins and flavors of anise, red fruits, and brown baking spices.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SIDEWAYS, Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, 2004

What are the differences among Merlot wines from various regions?

While different soil types, climate, and winemaking team have a strong effect on Merlot’s qualities, you can generally expect blueberry, black cherry, black currant, and vanilla flavors with velvety tannins and soft leather or earthy notes. Outside of Bordeaux, Merlot grows around the globe, but some of the best bottles on the market come from Australia, Napa, Sonoma, Italy, and Washington State. While Bordeaux has long been considered a cold weather region because of its damp maritime climate, most of its vineyards are at sea level, so warming temperatures there can add to a sense of over-ripeness if grapes are not picked early enough. Australia and Italy’s vineyards are generally close to sea level as well. In contrast the Napa AVA’s known for Merlot are mainly on mountainsides and hillsides high above the valley floor. These altitudes contribute to large swings in day-to-night temperatures, which aid in maintaining freshness and acidity in the grapes. Different soil types contribute to the flavor profile; volcanic soils or those with high mineral content can add traces of salinity, smoke, or what is simply known as minerality.

How should you drink Merlot?

Merlot should be served in a large wine glass, that is often called a Bordeaux glass. A large, deep bowl allows for more airspace above the wine and offers the best conditions for aromas to be released and appreciated and for allowing the wine to open. It should be served at a temperature between 55º and 65º F; if you store your bottles in a temperature-controlled cooler or cellar, they should be perfect when removed. Decanting before serving can also bring out the best in your Merlot.

How did we choose the nine Merlot wines on this list?

We took many elements into consideration when making our choices, and the most important is taste, but how a wine actually “tastes” involves a variety of impressions, including flavor, texture, tannins, acidity, and finish. We also considered ability to age and a combination of rarity and accessibility: We sought out wines that are made in relatively small quantities but at the same time are available to purchase without having to join a winery club or allocation list. The majority were tasted blind in comparative tastings with similar wines, but some were enjoyed at dinner with winemakers or opened by friends.

Why should you trust us?

Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jenssen, Robb Report’s wine editors, have been writing about wine for two decades, have visited wine regions and wineries around the world, and have tasted wine with the people who make it. Last year they tasted over 6,000 wines and are on target to sample more than 7,000 in 2024. They are judges for the internationally renowned Concours Mondial de Bruxelles wine competition, and their work has appeared in Wine Spectator, Forbes, Wine Enthusiast, Huffington Post, Saveur, and books published by Oxford University Press. They have been featured for their expertise in wine on The Today Show, The Martha Stewart Show, CNN, CBS, Fox, WGN, WPIX and NBC. Known as the World Wine Guys, they are the authors of six wine books which have received various accolades and awards including “Best Wine Book in the World” from Gourmand International.
