Trekking routes to bhimashankar, tips for the trek.

  • Trekking gear is essential. Make sure you carry a rope to climb through the steep, rugged portion with large rocks.
  • The trail does not have any eateries till the point the two routes (Shidi Ghat pathway and Ganesh Ghat route) meet. This point has only a few local vendors selling refreshments for passers-by. So, trekkers must carry enough water and snacks for themselves.
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers (nearest police station, hospitals and fire brigade), carry a torch, charge your mobiles completely and carry a power bank just in case.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and good trekking shoes. The forests are infamous for leeches, so choose your clothing accordingly or properly tuck them to avoid any injuries. Carry a raincoat if a trek is planned during the monsoons.

Dhak Plateau

The Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek route passes through deep wild rainforest, head-high bushes, lost-and-found trails, small rivulets, remote tribal villages, eerie temples, green meadows, hidden waterfalls and a plateau of flowers.

Due to the remoteness of the Bhimashankar Wildlife sanctuary, there are a few tribal villages where life still revolves primarily around hunting, gathering, and subsistence agriculture.

You explore the best features of the Sahyadri range on this trek. The Bhima river originates from Bhimashankar hill and passes through the deepest part of the forest. It attracts abundant wildlife, as there is no other water source around.

Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek

Tungarlu Dam, start of the trek

Once you reach Lonavala, take an auto-rickshaw to Tungarli Dam. This is where the trek begins.

At Tungarli, walk straight ahead on the wide trail. After about 2 hours you will reach a fork. Proceed along the trail on the right. An hour on this trail will bring you to Valvand village. While trekking through this stretch, you will get breathtaking views of the Rajmachi hills. Numerous birds and butterflies dot the landscape. You might even be able to spot trains in the distance.

The wide trail ends at Valvand village. Once you cross Valvand, you enter a forest. The trail ascends steeply as soon as you're inside the forest. The forest is very dense and the trail is barely visible. Wishing 15 minutes, you reach a clearing. Shirota Lake becomes visible to your right - this is a blue reservoir surrounded by hills.

Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek

Shirota Lake

Continue ahead on the trail. The forest begins again in about half an hour. After monsoons, it might get difficult to locate the trail. Continue making your way through the forest. After about an hour, Dhak plateau becomes visible to your left. At this point, the trail also becomes clearer. This can be very reassuring, especially if you're fumbling your way through the forest without a trail at all!

Around 200 meters on, this trail brings you to a grassland. You can take a break here.

Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek

The forest which begins soon after the grassland is not as dense as the previous stretch. The trail is clearly visible. In about 10 minutes, you get to a spot where multiple trails proceed in different directions. Take the one descending to the left.

Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek

Jungles around Kusur plateau

You will reach the temple outside Kundeswar in about 45 minutes. The village is another 15 minutes away. You can rest in the village for the night or back at the temple, in the courtyard. You can arrange with the villagers to provide you with dinner and breakfast the following morning. The villagers can also help you with a mattress and candles.

There is a rivulet flowing just behind the temple. Dhak plateau is visible to your right.

Day 2: Kundeswar to Talpewadi via Kusur

  • Time taken:  5 hours trek to Kusur and 1 hour bus ride to Talpewadi
  • Trek gradient:  Moderate
  • Starting point: Ganesh temple outside Kundeswar

Start early and proceed towards the village. In about 30 minutes, the flat trail starts climbing onto a hill. The trail curves to the right after a while. Kusur plateau lies ahead of you. After the monsoon, the plateau is filled with flowers. It almost reminds you of the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand.

You walk through the plateau on a very narrow trail. The flowers grow more colorful as you move ahead. You can stop for tea at one of the huts that you reach shortly. It is easy to lose track of time, admiring the flowers and clicking photographs.

Lonavala Bhimashankar Trek

Wildflowers

Kusur village is an hour's trek from here. It's mainly a descending trail. Kusur is a reasonably large village. You can buy food here. Board a bus here for Talpewadi village, which is 15 km ahead.

bhimashankar trek route

Villagers at Talpewadi allow you to stay with them for a fee. You can approach any of them.

Day 3: Talpewadi to Bhimashankar through Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary

  • Time taken: 10 hours
  • Water sources: Carry 2-3 litres of water. Bhima river, which you will reach after 8 hours of trekking is the only water source.
  • Starting point:  Talpewadi village

Start early from Talpewadi. The trail from Talpewadi is straightforward and you enter Bhimashankar Widlife sanctuary in about an hour. The trail inside the Sanctuary is clearly marked. However, you can also get a guide from Talpewadi if you're unsure.

Once you enter the sanctuary, it's wilderness again. You see occasional bushes of wild flowers. The trail is undulating and turns frequently. In about 2 hours, you reach a waterfall. It's 100 ft high and hidden deep in the jungle.

Continue on a similar trail after taking a break at the waterfall.  In about 2 hours, you will reach a plateau. This is similar to the Kusur plateau - brimming with flowers. Once you cross the plateau, the trail enters thick bushes. Within minutes you're out in the clear again. To your right, you get unobstructed view of a vast uninhabited valley. Numerous streams flow across it.

Two more hours on this trail bring you to the other side of the hill. Two tribal villages appear at a distance. Descend towards them. At the backdrop of these villages stands the imperial Bhimashankar hill and on the other side lies the endless basin that had kept you mesmerized for the last 2 hours. A rivulet gently flows. Bhimashankar base is 30 minutes away, down this trail.

From the base, the Bhimashankar temple is a straight climb up. The trail enters a deep and dark forest yet again. If you're lucky, you might spot a  shekru or giant Indian squirrel. In about an hour, you reach the Bhima river. It can get tricky to cross right after monsoon. The Bhima river originates at Bhimashankar and flows deep through the forest. It's the only water source for animals in the forest.

The trail up from the river is steep but well laid. You will reach Bhimashankar after about an hour's climb.

What to pack for the trek

No, stuffing it all in isn’t the right way to do it Packing a backpack correctly saves precious time that you might waste trying to find your things later. It is wise to spend some time on learning what really goes into packing a backpack.

What should I pack

On a trek, you only get what you take. Something as simple as a forgotten matchbox can cripple your cooking plans throughout the trek. So, it’s essential to prepare early and prepare well. To begin with, make a checklist. While shopping, remember this thumb rule - keep it light. “Every item needs to be light. This ensures that your backpack, on the whole, stays light,” says Sandhya UC, co-founder of Indiahikes. Balancing out heavy items with light ones isn’t going to have the same effect as having all light items. “Always opt for good quality, light items,” says Sandhya.

How to pack

The thumb rule for this one is to eliminate air spaces. Make sure that everything is packed tightly, especially clothes and jackets, as they tend to take up maximum air space. Put in all the large items first. Then squeeze in the smaller ones in the gaps. This ensures minimum air space. A good way to pack clothes is by using the Ranger Roll method.

Click on the image to view the Video

Where to pack

Bottom Sleeping bag : Make this your base layer. Sleeping bags tend to be voluminous, but do not weigh much. They’re perfect for the bottom of the bag. Tent : Just like the sleeping bag, even tents are voluminous and light. Keep the tent poles separately and place the fabric at the bottom of the backpack. Middle Heavy jacket : Roll up the jacket in a tight ball and place it in the middle of the backpack, close to your back. The middle region of the backpack should always have the heaviest items. You can store other things like ration or mini stoves in the middle. Other clothes : Roll other clothes and place them in the remaining space, to fill air gaps.

Top Water : Water, although heavy, needs to be easily accessible. So put it in the top most region of your backpack. Medicine box : This is another component that you wouldn’t want to be scavenging for when in need. Poncho : It could rain at any time in the mountains. So, ponchos should be accessible easily. Also, having a waterproof poncho at the top of the backpack provides additional waterproofing to items in the bag.

How to Get Fit for the trek

Cardiovascular endurance

The secret to ascending any trail lies in building your cardiovascular endurance. You can begin by jogging every day. Ideally, you should be able to jog 4 km in 20 minutes before the start of the trek. It takes time to be able to cover this distance in the given time. Start slow and increase your pace every day. Swimming, cycling and stair climbing without too many breaks in between can help too. Strength This is another area you should work on. You will need to build strength in your muscles and in your core body. You can do some squats to strengthen your leg muscles. Do around 3 sets of squats, with 8 squats in each set. Apart from this, you can add planks and crunches to your workout.

Flexibility

Another aspect that will help you trek comfortably is flexibility. For this, you can do some stretching exercises - stretch your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, lower back muscles and shoulders regularly. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you to be in good shape before the trek. Working out indoors

If you can't go out and jog because of time and space constraints, here's a video you can use to work out indoors.

Trek Starts from Khandas Village, Karjat

For the easy-going, Bhimashankar, about 275 km from Mumbai by road is a weekend getaway. For Hiking, Bhimashankar Sidhi Ghat Trek is a 3250 feet high and a 4.5-hour grueling trek from Khandas village. It is a test of endurance for our muscles, joints, and perseverance for our minds.

Trekking Bhimashankar

The temple on top dedicated to Lord Shiva dates back to the 18th century. Legend is that Lord Shiva killed Bhima, an Asura who lived there. Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is home to a variety of endangered species of flora and fauna. The Giant Indian Squirrel is a significant attraction, while the other species present include Panther, Sambar, Wild Boar. The Bhima river originates from here and joins river Krishna.  Trekking Bhimashankar  during the monsoons is ideal and the most enjoyable, with endless stretches of greenery right from the base with waterfalls and gushing streams. But it is also risky. River Bhima, also known as Chandrabhaga River, especially at Pandharpur, resembles the Moon's shape.

Bhimashankar-Ladder-Route

Bhimashankar Trek Plan

Initially, we planned to cover only the first plateau and a hike through the forests, since trekking up to Bhimashankar and back on the same day could be a daunting task. But the enthusiasm was infectious, and each had a point to prove to oneself. Even the first-timers were determined. It is an experience that you can never forget, and our trek was one of them. So here we go, we were 30 plus trekkers of different age groups with a mixed bag of experienced casual and first-time trekkers.  Bhimashankar  located near to Pune in the ghat region of the Sahyadri hills

Train Journey Bhimashankar Trek

Trek to Bhimashankar was planned by Treks and Trails India. I asked everyone to be on time & catch the last train leaving from CST Railway Station to Karjat Railway Station from their respective stations. The meeting point was 2nd last boogie of the train. Everybody was excited and caught the train through some of them caught the earlier train, and some got into a different boogie. And as usual, few were following Indian Standard Time and missed the train.

Everybody was scattered in the boogie as it was a full boogie till Kalyan, but and many of us did not know each other. I was trying to talk with everyone so that they don’t feel left out. We reached Karjat and headed to the State Transport Bus stand, where we rested for a couple of hours. Early in the morning, we got into Four TUM-TUM bigger versions of auto-rickshaw and headed for Khandas, the base village, an hour-long ride.

Bhimashankar-Trek-River-Crossing

Tum Tum Ride to Khandas trek start point for Bhimashankar

It was dark when we started our ride before dawn, but later while traveling to Khandas, we had a real feeling of the countryside as we saw small villages, farms, animals, bullock carts, which we don’t get to see in our day to day life. There are two Trek routes for Bhimashankar Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat or Ladder route. We were going to ascend Via Shidi Ghat and descend Via Ganesh Ghat to save time and enjoy the beauty of both the courses.

We had hired a local villager to help us while ascending till the Shidi Ghat were over. We briefed everyone about the trek, gave some instructions, dos, and don’ts and then started the trek. Everyone was very excited and started the trek.

Bhimashankar Trek Blog

Within an hour, we reached the first ladder out of the three ladders were we met two other groups who were climbing the ladder. The other groups were also big like us but were slow and didn’t have experienced people to assist them in the climb, so I had to step forward as they had already slowed us down by an hour.

Bhimashankar-Trek-Ladder

Small Break

We were running behind schedule, and our group had got divided into two due to other groups. We still managed to catch up with the 1st half of our group after crossing the three ladders as there is a plateau after the ladders where there are some huts that sell tea, buttermilk, lime juice, biscuits, Bhakri with chutney. The Plateau is where both the routes meet, and from here, there is only one single route. From here, the path ahead was steep, but our first-half group had waited for us over there for more than half an hour, so they requested me to allow them to go ahead. I hesitated to let them, but they were bored, so I permitted them to go ahead, as it consisted of experienced trekkers who had done this trek before.

Bhimashankar-Trek

  • Gupt Bhimashankar

I had instructed them to meet near the Bhimashankar temple and give the order for lunch as it was Shravan season there would-be pilgrims in huge numbers visiting Bhimashankar and we had to save time. After two hours, the first group called me and said they had reached the top, and there is a lot of crowds and a very long line for darshan due to Shravan Sunday. So they are thinking of skipping the darshan and visiting Gupt Mahadev, also known as Gupt Bhimashankar, to which I agreed. Gupt Mahadev is around half an hour's walk from the temple near a flowing river. They had also placed the order for lunch with a resident homestay over there.

Bhimashankar-Mandir-Monsoon

Finally Reached Bhimashankar

While climbing, we got a delightful climate and not much rain, so we were able to get a good view of the natural beauty. And after a few hours, we finally reached the top. On top, there is a lake. It took approx two hours and thirty minutes to reach till the Mandir.

After reaching the top, we went near the temple where we were supposed to meet but couldn’t find any network to contact the first group. So we had to wait there, and while we were waiting near the temple, we realized that some of our group trekkers are not with us, and we had to search for them as cell phones were not reachable, and the crowd was increasing. After looking for them, we found some of them and came to know via other trekkers that four of our trekkers had decided to quit and left by bus for Mumbai to which we were upset and disappointed.

Descend return Bhimashankar Trek starts from Ganesh Ghat

But we had to carry on and descend to complete the trek. During this, our first group had come back, and we proceeded for lunch with them. There we had to wait for some time as the food was not ready, but it was worth waiting as the food was hot and delicious. We all enjoyed it as it was typical home food.

Descend return Bhimashankar Trek starts from Ganesh Ghat.

After lunch, we started our journey back right away, and we had to ensure that we reach down soon as it would become dark, and very few of us had carried the torch. So the instructions were given to the entire group clearly, and we started descending. While descending, we were enjoying the scenic beauty around us and also meeting many devotees climbing up for the next day darshan.

Ganesh Ghat

By God's grace, we did not have too many people slip and fall, which generally happens in this trek during this season, and all of them maintained a reasonable speed also. One of our trekkers was around 50 plus but was very sporty as we had taken only one short break and descended via Ganesh Ghat, which is a long and easy route. We reached the Ganesh mandir and took the darshan and a small break and again started to descend.

Karjat Journey Begins

We all reached down within time, and there was still daylight. I had already called the Maruti vans when we reached the Ganesh mandir and informed them that we should be down in an hour or so. He said that it would take some time as one of the vans was on his way from Karjat, so I decided to send the other Vehicle ahead so that they can reach home soon, and I stayed back with some other trekker for the last vehicle to come.

Finally, after some time, the last van came, and we started our ride back to Karjat station. We reached Karjat station, and a train for Mumbai just left, which we were unable to catch, so now we had to wait for around 20-30 minutes for the next train. Then the next train came we got into it and were relaxing. By this time, everyone’s energy levels crushed, but we still chatted, and everyone alighted at their respective stations as we had boarded. We wished a final goodbye of this beautiful journey to each other, as this was one of the most memorable treks we had.

What is the best time to visit Bhimashankar Trek?

The best time to visit is during the monsoon season from July to September, as the weather is pleasant, waterfalls are rejuvenated, and faunas can be spotted.

Spring and winter are also great seasons for a trek. Spring, from February to March, offers a magical time to explore the forests with temperatures ranging from 15ᵒC to 31ᵒC. Winter, from November to February, is perfect for recreational activities, although trekkers may want to carry jackets or woollens as the temperature can drop to 11/12ᵒC at night.

However, it’s not recommended to visit between June and September due to heavy rainfall, making the climb slippery and dangerous. Summertime trek is also not recommended due to high humidity, which can be extremely exhausting. Nonetheless, daredevils can head to the trails if they are ready for the rains or the hot and humid season.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Khandas village is the starting point for the Bhimashankar trek and can be reached through Karjat. To reach Karjat/Neral from Mumbai, you can board a local train or outstation train to Karjat or Pune and alight at Neral or Karjat, which takes about 2 hours from Dadar railway station. If you’re traveling from Pune, board a Mumbai bound train and alight at Neral or Karjat, which takes about 2 hours.

To reach Bhimashankar from Neral, take a sharing Tum-Tum/Van to Kashele, which costs 20 Rs per seat. From Kashele, you can either wait for the bus to Khandas base village or board another sharing Tum-Tum, which costs 30-40 Rs per seat. Private jeeps/autos are easily available from Neral/Karjat to Kashele/Khandas base village, and you can bargain for a decent deal. It costs Rs 500 to travel from Neral to Khandas base village.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

Travellers to Bhimashankar have several options for food during their trek. They can find hotels and restaurants set up by villagers at Khandas village and small stalls near the Bhimashankar temple. However, it is advisable to carry your own food. During the trek, travelers can also find authentic local food like Jhunka Bhakhri and Kande Pohe at makeshift stops set up by the locals.

In Bhimashankar village, there are no restaurants, but travelers can head to nearby hotels for the local cuisine. There are also some delicious local snacks available at the point where the two trekking trails meet, including Misal Paav, Roasted Corn, Fruits, Groundnuts, Batata Wada, Idli Sambar, Pakoras, Lemonade, and Ginger Tea. Some restaurants also serve Maharashtrian Thalis with traditionally cooked vegetables, curries, flatbreads, and salad.

Accommodation:

Night stays can be arranged at Khandas at the start of the trek. Bhimashankar temple has a few lodges and hotels, and local villagers can also help with accommodation at the village and the top. Additionally, there are options for hotels, guest houses, and lodges in all budgets in Bhimashankar.

You can check for good hotel deals here.

The Difficulty level of the Bhimashankar Trek

The Bhimashankar trek is a moderate-difficult trek with steep slopes and rocky terrain. There are two routes available, Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat, with the latter being more difficult. The trek is filled with stunning artifacts by nature, and the Ganesh Ghat route is relatively easier, but still demands caution and energy. The most difficult part of the trek is braved while passing through steep pathways.

Preparation required for the Bhimashankar Trek

The Bhimashankar trek is suitable for those with good stamina, endurance, and fitness levels, and not necessarily for expert trekkers. Light workout sessions or cardio can be done at least two weeks before the trek to help prepare the body. It is also important to keep the backpack light. Network connection is available at the base village but as you climb up, mobile connectivity will fluctuate due to the remote location and high altitude, with poor connectivity and scarce availability of telecom towers.

BHIMASHANKAR TEMPLE TREK – JYOTIRLINGA DARSHAN

Last Updated on April 8, 2022 by asoulwindow

About Bhimashankar Temple

Bhimashankar Temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas located across India, making it a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindus. Famous for its S wayambhu Lingam (Self emerged linga) , one can’t ignore the awe inspiring scenes from ancient scriptures carved in the pillars and door of the Hindu temple. Apart from 12 Jyotirlingas, Shiv Bhagwan has 64 forms. Many people also trek to Bhimashankar like we did. Keep reading for a complete guide to Bhimashankar trek in monsoon, based on a personal experience.

The Bhimashankar Shivling is much revered. Do pay your respects to the sacred Bhimashankar Shivling. Millions of bhakts and devotees have been visiting the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple since times immemorial. Trimbakeshwar in Nashik and Grishneshwar are the other two Jyotirlinga shrines located in Maharashtra.

The other Jyotirlingas are as below:

South India – Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh.

West India – Bhimashankar, Trimbakeshwar in Nashik and Grishneshwar, both in Maharashtra, Nageshwara Jyotirlings at Dwarka in Gujarat, Somnath in Gujarat

North India-  Kedarnath in Himalayas of Uttarakhand , Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh , Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh , Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh .

Bhimashankar History

How old is Bhimashankar temple? The ancient Bhimashankar temple was constructed in 13 th century C.E. by Vishwakarma sculptors. There had been many additions to the temple over the years. Nana Phadnavis , a well known Maratha statesman and influential minister, added the shikhara or the spires in 18 th century.

Even Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj , the most celebrated Maratha ruler has visited Bhimashankar Temple and offered his prayers. A dedicated shrine for Lord Shaneeshwara is also located within the temple premises. You must pay a visit to both, especially the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga. It is the best place to visit in Bhimashankar.

Bhimashankar Architectural Style

The Bhimashankar temple was built around the Swayambhu Linga or the Shivlinga that self emerged from the ground. This holy Linga is located right in the middle of the sanctum of temple. Lingam is the main image here which represents the stambh or pillar with no beginning and end. Therefore, it is a symbol of the infinite nature of Shankar Bhagwan. Outside the main shrine, you can see an idol of Nandi Bull , the vahana or mount of Shiv Bhagwan .

The fact that this spiritual abode is built in a picturesque location, adds to its appeal.  The temple reflects different architectural designs because it has been altered several times over the centuries. Built in the Nagara architectural style, its shikhara was built by Nana Phadnavis.

You can notice exquisite carvings of Hindu deities, human beings, celestial being etc on the pillars of temple and the door of the shrine.

Mahashivratri at Bhimashankar – Festivals

Owing to the influx of people, especially during the Mahashivratri, the area around the Bhimashankar temple is bustling with lodges, hotels, restaurants, shops and dharamshalas , parking lot and even a bus stand. It is the top things to do in Bhimashankar.

Pilgrims visit Bhimashankar in large groups during the Shravan month, more so on Mondays. Also watch out for Poornima festival.

Legends and stories of Bhimashankar

There have been various accounts of legends associated with Bhimashankar Mandir. Below are the main legends:

As per Hindu beliefs, Bhima and his mother Karkati used to live in the Dakini jungles of Bhimashankar. Bhima was Kumbhakarna’s son, who was the brother of Demon King Ravan from the Hindu epic Ramayana . Enraged after learning that Kumbhakarna was killed by Vishnu ji in the form of Shri Ram , Bhima decided to take revenge. He started performing penance to impress Brahma ji.

Pleased with his devotion, Brahma ji granted him with enormous strength. But Bhima used this advantage to harass the people and bring them trouble. He locked up Kamrupeshwar, a passionate devotee of Shankar ji and pressurized him to worship Bhim (himself) instead. Such was the devotion of Kamrupeshwar to Shankar ji that he refused these demands by Bhim.

Furious, Bhima tried to demolish the Shivalinga with his sword. In no time, Shiv ji appeared and killed Bhima, turning him to ashes. It is believed by Hindus that the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is located at the same spot where Shankar Bhagwan manifested himself. Isn’t this story interesting? Let’s have a look at another legend below.

According to the ancient Hindu scripture, Shiv Mahapuran , Vishnu ji, the Hindu deity of protection and Brahma ji, the Hindu God of creation had an altercation about the creation of the world. Bhagwan Shiv pierced the 3 lok or worlds, viz. Earth or bhu lok , world of Gods and underground world or patal lok as a Jyotirlinga, the infinite light pillar. Vishnu ji and Brahma ji were given the task to ascertain that which direction the light ends. While Vishnu ji searched in downward direction, Brahma ji searched in upward direction.

While Vishnu ji accepted to lose, Brahma ji said a lie that he finally managed to discover where the light ends. Unhappy with his lie, Shiv ji appeared as 2 nd light pillar and cursed Brahma ji that he will never be worshipped or included in religious ceremonies.

Pleased with honesty of Vishnu ji, Shankar ji granted him with a blessing that he would be worshipped by people till eternity. All the 12 Jyotirlinga sites are thus the spots where Shankar ji manifested as a blazing column of light. Hindu devotees believe that Shankar ji partly appears from Jyotirlinga, a supreme partless reality.

As per the other legends, Tripurasura , a demon did penance in the deep forests of Bhimashankar in order to impress Shiv Bhagwan . He wanted to be immortal. Pleased with the dedication and devotion of Tripurasura, Shankar ji agreed to give him the gift of immortality on the condition that he will exercise his power to help the needy people who are in trouble.

Tripurasura though agreed with this condition but eventually he broke his vow and started giving trouble to both humans as well as Gods. The Gods requested Bholenath to end this cycle of trouble, Shankar ji then prayed to his wife Parvati ji. Both Shiv ji and Parvati ji took the form of Ardhanari Nateshwara and killed the evil demon Tripurasura.

Bhimashankar Trek – Complete Guide

Bhimashankar trek is the most beautiful trek in the Western Ghats. The trek passes through dense deciduous forest. Bhimashankar Wildlife sanctuary established in 1984 is spread over 131 square kilometers. One must keep the eyes peeled for spotting a Giant Malabar Squirrel or Shekru along with tiny crabs, deers, rare birds etc.

Throughout the trek, one comes across few shops where trekker can sample authentic local food like Jhunka Bhakhri and Kande Pohe along with tea. The locals have set up these makeshift stops. It is the next best things to do in Bhimashankar after Jyotirling darshan .

Monsoon is the best time to trek here owing to perfect weather and beautiful views. The valley in monsoon is verdant and blanketed by a thick mist, lending it an aura.

The trek culminates at the ancient Bhimashankar Temple. Being one of the 12 jyotirlingas located across India, it holds great importance for pilgrims. The melt in mouth kandi peda available at the temple is not to be missed. Those who do not want to trek can easily reach Bhimashankar Temple via Government run buses or private vehicle.

Bhimashankar is one of the most popular treks in Maharashtra. Every monsoon, trekkers flock to the Sahyadris in Maharashtra to enjoy the bounty of nature. Though trekking in Maharashtra is great in all seasons, monsoon is the most delightful time. The western ghats come alive with rain powered greenery, mist and pleasant weather.

Time taken for Bhimashankar trek

A medium level trek, it takes 5 hours to reach the Bhimashankar temple from the base village Kathewadi. Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat are the two routes for trekking. Ganesh Ghat is easier and less tricky than Shidi Ghat. From either ways, it remains one of the most beautiful trek in the Western Ghats.

Base Village Kathewadi

As we reached Karjat from Mumbai’s local train, we headed straight away to Kathewadi, the base village of Bhimashankar Trek.  Even before we started to ascend, the simple yet beautiful Kathewadi usurped all our attention. We decided to spend some time here before beginning the trek. The fields were nearly empty when we reached.

Translucent yellow colored crabs scampered around as we sat next to the small water stream. Few local villagers, toting umbrellas, went about their work. Bright colored spiders kept themselves busy expanding their webs. Flowers of multiple hues and fruits filled the trees. In the far distance, the mountains enveloped in mist, loomed large.  The view of the mighty mountain from the plains of Kathewadi gave us a perspective of what lies ahead. We realized, in few hours, we would be on top of these mountains.

Stop at Ganesh Mandir

After having our fill of the lemonade sold in the lone hut in vicinity, we started our march to the trekking trail. As soon as we started to ascend, a herd of goats welcomed us on the rough rocky patch. Half an hour later, we arrived at a Ganesh Temple which offered shelter. Some trekkers seeked blessing for a successful trek. 10 minutes later, we arrived at a flat surface. Exhausted, the group decided to take rest on the rocks. The rocks faced the valley and offered us breath taking views of the plains and mist laden mountains in the distance.

Eat Jhunka Bhakari near waterfall

After the brief rest, we reached a small waterfall after 10 minutes. We used the opportunity to wash our sweaty faces and of course for photo ops. Just 5 minutes away, we took another break. We didn’t need this break for rest. What made us stop was the irresistible aroma of food which escaped a hut.

A local woman was making Jhunka Bhakri on the clay oven fuelled by wood fire. A hanging lantern indicated that she lived in the middle of the forest without any neighbours to speak of. Jhunkha Bhakri is the staple food of rural Maharashtra.

Bhakri is a round, flat unleavened bread made often with rice flour, bajra (pearl millet), jowar (Sorghum), wheat or other flours. It is thick and typically harder than the usual roti . Jhunka is a thick gram flour based curry.

High in protein and carbohydrates, Jhunka Bhakri was a perfect meal to power our trek. We settled ourselves on the wooden logs and shared the Jhunka Bhakri which was served with onion and chillies. The smell of burning wood and pleasant weather made it taste even better.

Views at Bhimashankar Trek

Energized, we started the Bhimashankartrek again. More crabs awaited us as we negotiated the water filled patches on the trekking trail a little ahead. What followed 20 minutes later stopped us in our tracks. A series of 7 waterfalls , located next to each other on a large mountain made our best moment on the trek.

This spot is one of the main reasons why people choose Bhimashankar trek.  We stood there mesmerized and watched the spectacle agape mouthed.

We came across many small water streams as we trekked on wet patches again. By now the forest had become denser. The bird calls had become more concentrated. The rocks were now covered in green moss. So were the branches of the trees. Some trees were so tall, we had to crane our neck to admire their beauty.

Snails leisurely moved around the tiny red mushrooms. The small termite homes made their presence felt, thanks to the unique design. Water droplets dropped lyrically from the translucent new leaves. This patch of Bhimashankar trek slowed us down. We often stopped to admire the nature’s bounty, even bending down to observe small plants, mushrooms and insects.

Pass through Bhimashankar Wildlife sanctuary

We tried hard to spot shekru (Giant Malabar Squirrel) and birds in the dense forest but failed. Bhimashankar Wildlife sanctuary spread over 131 square kilometers is rich in flora and fauna. Established in 1984 with intent to protect the habitat of the Giant Malabar Squirrel, the deciduous forest is home to 9 tribal villages.

Rare and common wild animals such as mongoose, monkeys, leopards, Sangai deer, bhekar (Indian Munjtac or Barking Deer), sambar , randukkar (wild boar), Ud manjar (Indian palm civet), porcupine, wild hare etc are found here. Trees like Karambu (clove tree), oba, jambul are commonly found in this region.

What to eat – Kanda Poha Break

After burning calories, we were hungry again. Luckily, we came across another hut occupied by only one man and his pet dog. He didn’t live here but operates the small shop to serve food for the trekkers. We savoured the kanda poha with tea and it drizzled lightly. He told us that before sunset he would pack and leave for his home along with the pet dog, lest the leopard drags the dog away.

Routes of Bhimashankar – Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat

We moved on and braved the most difficult patch of the trek. There are two routes to trek on the Bhimashankar trail. Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat. Shidi Ghat is slightly more tricky and difficult. We chose the Ganesh Ghat route. It’s relatively easier yet demands caution and energy. Steep pathway on this patch had us huffing and panting.

Going forward, we had to skillfully cross a narrow path. It was close to a sheer drop in the valley. The rain had made the rock slippery so we had to maneuver our way skillfully and with great caution. We crossed the path one person at a time. As we reached the other side, we were rewarded with beautiful views of the villages below. The green vistas complemented the tiny rural houses.

Arrive at Bhimashankar Temple

Around one hour more of trekking through dense forest , we arrived at a wide clearing. Suddenly the forest disappeared and we found ourselves in the midst of a vast green field shrouded in thick mist. Cows grazed along the large pond while dogs came running to us looking for food. We knew civilization is around the corner.

Just 5 minutes later, we were thrilled to see the Bhimashankar temple complex bustling with activity. Tourists, trekkers, devotees, shopkeepers and locals filled the streets and seamlessly blended with each other.

Pay respects at Bhimashankar Temple- 12 jyotirlingas

We headed to the ancient Bhimashankar Temple. We arrived late evening here. The light was fading and we were surrounded by dense fog. It was also slightly cold when we reached.

What to eat at Bhimashankar Temple area

We stayed overnight after buying bags of kandi peda , a local sweet offered at the temple as prasad.   The melt in mouth peda is sinfully delicious. We packed some for home the next day before catching the bus for Pune. From Pune we traveled to Mumbai via train. It was a perfect weekend destination from Mumbai.

Best Time To Go To Bhimashankar Mandir Trek.

Winter – Though Bhimashankar is a year round destination, but the winter months of October, November, December, January and February are the best time to do the Bhimashankar trek as the weather is very pleasant in these months.

Monsoon – Monsoon months are the best time to trek through the verdant hills of Bhimashankar forests. Another benefit of trekking during monsoon is that we saw many waterfalls and the weather was really pleasant. Monsoon months in Maharashtra are from June, July, August and September. Beware of heavy rains though, we were lucky that it didn’t rain much!

Bhimashankar Trek In August – I trekked to Bhimashankar in August which was the perfect time. We enjoyed trekking on a clear sunny day mostly with a slight drizzle and dense mist at the top near Bhimashankar Mandir. This is why, I realized, it is the most beautiful trek in the Western Ghats.

Summer – Summer is also a good time, but you will get dehydrated easily. Also it is very sunny and hot during summer in Maharashtra. Summer months in Maharashtra are March, April and May. This is also the time when Bhimashankar forests do not look very beautiful. Expect dry brown landscape as compared to the lush green scenes during monsoon and winter months.

Bhimashakar weather- Built at 3,250 feet of height, the temple is enveloped in mist during monsoon .

Bhimashankar Trek Difficulty level

It was a moderate trek. I did huff and puff like many but I managed easily as I was young. Some men in their 50s were having a hard time trekking. So do trust your fitness level before deciding to go on Bhimashankar trek. It is also not technically difficult trek. It is just a walk in forest with very few steep paths and just one slightly risky patch. Watch out for slippery rocks when trekking in monsoon.

Shopping venues near Bhimashankar District

There are many shops which line the streets outside Bhimashakar temple from where you can pick assorted items. From Pooja samagri (Things required for rituals and prayers), to toys for kids and from delicious local specialty Kandi Peda to daily use items, you can buy a lot in and around Bhimashankar temple. Do buy some of these and support local economy.

However, do not expect any shop throughout the trek except some makeshift places to eat, run by local people. Bhimshankar trip is incomplete without local flavor.

Locals Go Here

The local people of Maharashtra come in large number to Bhimashankar Mandir on daily basis. Most of the pilgrims you will see at Bhimashankar district are the local people of Maharashtra as it is very close to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune.

How many steps to Bhimashankar Temple

There were around 230 broadly made stairs or steps which we walked on to reach Bhimashankar Mandir. You will see many makeshift stalls selling food, snacks and pooja samagri on either side of the steps. It is a very easy ascend and descend. We walked on the steps when it was heavy mist here. It is easy to go on Bhimashankar tour.

Internal Transportation

You do not need any internal transportation in and around the Bhimashankar temple as it is a relatively small place. Most of the points of interest are located at walking distance from each other. That said, Auto Rickshaws and buses are available right outside the Bhimashankar Mandir premises, in case you fancy going to places to visit near Bhimashankar. This will help you in planning Bhimashankar trip.

Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary

Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for the much revered Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, voluptuous waterfalls , lush green rolling hills, dense jungles , vivid flora/fauna and ample trek opportunities. One of the best wildlife sanctuary near Mumbai, it is home to some interesting animals such as leopards, Giant Flying Squirrel etc. Bird watching enthusiasts can also spot many rare and common birds in Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary.

While pilgrims are interested in Bhimashankar Mandir, the trekking enthusiasts love the incredible views Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary offers. It is one of the most popular things to do in Bhimashankar.

Bhimashankar Forest

The Bhimashankar Forest consists of a mix of evergreen forests, semi- evergreen as well as deciduous forests. Bhimashankar is also known since it is the source of the Bhima river which merges with Krishna river near Raichur.

Thanks to the various tributaries (Ghod, Bhima etc) of the Krishna river and Ulhas river that flows in this region, there is a constant water supply in the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. I visited in August and did witness a glimpse of the heavy rainfall that this region receives during the monsoon months, mostly from June to August.

In summer however, lack of water is not uncommon in Bhimashankar forests. It is one of the best places to visit near Bhimashankar temple.

What is Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary famous for

Well, below are some of the major reasons why Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is so famous not only in Maharashtra but across India:

Bhimashankar temple

Much before Bhimashankar district became a cool trekking route for urban youngsters, Bhimashankar temple was still visited by millions from across India. The much revered Shri Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is very sacred to Hindu people from across the world.

This is the number one reason why Bhimashankar temple is so famous. It is one of the 12 important Jyotirlingas of the world, thus making it a very important Hindu pilgrimage destination of India. Shiva Bhagwan Bhakts come here every day in large numbers. Bhimashankar Shivling is one of the most worshipped Shivlings of the world.

Also known as the flying Giant Squirrel or the Indian Giant Squirrel, the Malabar Giant Squirrel calls dense jungles of Bhimashankar as its home. I heard their voice while I was on a Cobra trail in Agumbe in the South Indian state of India Karnataka , which incidentally also is home to western ghats. No wonder, the Malabar Giant Squirrel is Maharashtra’s state animal as well. The Indo Malayan Squirrel is an endangered species. It is called as Shekru by locals of Maharashtra.

This herbivorous animal feeds mainly on flowers, nuts, fruits, tree bark etc. Some exception has been noticed as some squirrels are seen eating small eggs of birds and insects as well. Indian Giant Squirrel is arboreal and diurnal.

Thanks to the conservation efforts made by the alert authorities at the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Malabar Giant Squirrel has a safe and protected haven here. Its scientific name is Ratufa indica.

The Complete Guide to the Bhimashankar Trek

bhimashankar trek

Table of Contents

The Bhimashankar Trek is a nature lover’s paradise. It passes through thick forests and enters the center of the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. The Bhimashankar trip provides a complete dose of action, with stream crossings, ladders, and rock climbing all rolled into one trek.

While the monsoon season is ideal for this journey, it is also possible to complete it during other seasons. The path is scenic and exhilarating. Trekkers can take the Shidi Ghat route to reach Bhimashankar on foot.  For beginners, we recommend the Ganesh Ghat route, which has spectacular vistas and is easy.

Birds, langurs, and spotted deer will keep you company while you’re in the jungle. If you’re lucky, you might spot the Malabar Giant Squirrel, sometimes known as ‘Shekar’.

The walk to Gupt Bhimashankar, one of the 12 jyotirlingas, is the highlight of the trek. Gupt Bhimashankar sits beneath a rock in the middle of a stream.

➤ Trail information

  • Altitude: 3,050 feet.
  • Time taken: 3.5 hours via Shidi Ghat (ladder); 4 hours via Ganesh Ghat. It takes two hours to descend.
  • Trek gradient: moderately challenging.
  • Water sources: none. Carry 2-3 liters of water. During the monsoon, you can refill your water bottles from seasonal streams.

The Bhimashankar Trek begins in Khandas. About 500 meters after passing through Khandas village, you will come across a tiny bridge at a T-junction. The route on the left leads to Shidi Ghat, and the one to the right leads to the Ganesh Ghat walkway.

Ascent through Shidi Ghat:

The first 20 minutes following the T-junction are a leisurely walk. You get to a creek in approximately 20 minutes. After crossing the stream, the trail ascends for around 40 minutes until you reach the first ladder. After climbing the first ladder, you can swiftly go on to the next. There is a cave after the second ladder where you can rest for a while. This location provides magnificent views of the valley below.

Soon after crossing ladder 3, there is a section of massive rocks. You must exercise considerable caution while traveling this portion. Although not required, a rope will be useful here.

Immediately after this segment, the route connects with the one from Ganesh Ghat. This is the halfway point. There are a few shelters where people sell snacks.

Ascent through Ganesh Ghat:

For the first hour following the t-junction, the trail runs through deep vegetation. This is a gentle rise. After an hour, the trail opens up onto a meadow. After 30 minutes of ascending through the meadow, it enters a dense forest. This finally connects to the Shidi Ghat path.

The trail after the two paths meet is a hard ascent through dense forest. It leads straight to the top, where you may discover the Bhimashankar temple.

➤ How to contact Gupt Bhimashankar

The trek to Gupt Bhimashankar starts to the right of the temple (SBI ATM). Walk along the brook behind the Bhimashankar temple. Within 100 meters, the route enters a deep forest. Arrows indicate the way.

After one kilometer, the trail forks. One portion crosses a creek directly, while the other moves parallel to it. Both of these lead to Gupt Bhimashankar. The first one passes through the Sakshi Vinayak temple.

Descent through Ganesh Ghat:

The downhill route is the same as the ascent until the halfway point, where the trails from Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat intersect. There is clear signage at the junction where the road splits. You pass a few huts around this junction. After passing the huts, take the trail to the left.

The walk passes through dense woodlands and meadows. Around 20 minutes into the descent, you’ll come across a Ganesh mandir. As soon as you arrive at the base, you will find yourself on a neatly laid-out tar road.

Walk along this road for 500 meters till you reach the T-junction from where you started. Shared jeeps and autos are available to transport you to Karjat/Neral.

Apoorva Karlekar and Sneha Rao researched and documented this hike in September 2017.

Alternative treks:

While the Bhimashankar trek is incomparable, there are a number of easy-to-do hikes in Maharashtra that are ideal for first-timers who prefer to go gently. Keep in mind that GoPlanReady does not organize these hikes. We send trek researchers to investigate and document treks so that people may read about them on our website and go trekking on their own.

Trek start in Karjat’s Khandas Village

Karjat’s-Khandas-Village

Karjat’s-Khandas-Village

Bhimashankar, which is 275 kilometers away from Mumbai by road, is a great weekend destination for the laid-back. The Bhimashankar Sidhi Ghat Trek is a strenuous 4.5-hour hike from Khandas village that reaches an elevation of 3250 feet. It’s an exercise in mental fortitude as well as physical endurance for our joints and muscles.

Ascent via Shidi Ghat:

It’s a leisurely stroll for the first 20 minutes following the T-junction. After around 20 minutes, you approach a brook. After crossing the brook, the trail climbs for around 40 minutes to the first ladder. You swiftly go to the next ladder after climbing the first one. After climbing the second ladder, you can unwind for a moment in the cave. This location provides breathtaking views of the valley below.

Huge rocks are scattered in a region just after you pass ladder 3. You must proceed through this area with utmost caution. A rope is not required, although it will be useful in this situation.

The trail merges with the Ganesh Ghat trail just after this stretch. This indicates the halfway point. Refreshments are sold by residents in a few huts.

Ascent via Ganesh Ghat

Ganesh-Ghat

Ganesh-Ghat

The Ganesh Ghat route to Bhimashankar is a shorter, more gradual alternative to the Shidi Ghat. It’s around 15 kilometers long and takes about 4-5 hours to complete. While it may not be as challenging, it offers its own unique charms:

The initial ascent is a gentle walk through dense forest, followed by a gradual climb through meadows and rocky sections. No relentless stair battles here!

The route passes alongside a stream and waterfalls, offering refreshing breaks and stunning views. You might even spot some wildlife like monkeys or deer.

You’ll encounter an old temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh, adding a touch of history and serenity to your trek.

Panoramic Views: Though not as dramatic as Shidi Ghat, the Ganesh Ghat still rewards you with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding valleys and hills.

Overall, the Ganesh Ghat is a perfect choice for those seeking a scenic and enjoyable trek to Bhimashankar, without the extreme physical demands of Shidi Ghat. It’s ideal for families, nature enthusiasts, and moderate trekkers looking for a beautiful escape.

BHIMASHANKAR JYOTIRLINGA TEMPLE – DAY TRIP FROM PUNE

bhimashankar trek route

Soon, the monsoons will be upon us. So, what are your plans? That means it is the perfect time for a short road trip. A long drive, lush green mountains, a steaming cup of tea, and hot bhajjis (pakoda). What better way than this to spend the weekend? Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is 109 km from Pune and perfect for a monsoon day trip.

In this guide to Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple, discover the legend, how to get there, sights to visit along the way, darshan-related info, and the best time to visit.

Let’s begin with the legend of the Bhimashankar temple.

LEGEND OF BHIMASHANKAR JYOTIRLINGA TEMPLE

Once upon a time, there lived a demon named Tripura. He atoned for his sins. Brahma was pleased with him and granted him three wishes. Tripura’s first wish was immunity against gods, demons, yakshas (nature spirits) and Gandharvas (celestial beings). His second wish was for his three puras (fortresses) to be unbreachable. The third wish was for him to be able to travel the universe. Brahma granted all his wishes.

Tripura then set out to defeat the three Lokas – devlok (heaven), Prithvi Lok (earth) and Patal Lok (hell). He defeated devlok. So, Lord Shiva decided to destroy Tripura.

The battle between Lord Shiva and Tripura took place in the Sahyadri hills. Shiva took the form of the Bhima Shankar and defeated Tripura. During the war, the Bhimarathi River had dried up. After the battle, Lord Shiva rested in the Sahyadri hills. His sweat dripped down, refilling the Bhimarathi River.

The Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is a 12th-century Nagara and Indo-Aryan style temple. The original temple was a swayambhu Shiva Linga (self-born). Later a new temple was built in place of the old one.

The temple is beautiful and carved in intricate carvings of scenes from the Shiv Puran, Ramayan, Dashavatar and more.

DARSHAN INFO

The Bhimashankar temple is in the Sahyadri hills. A long stone staircase leads to the Bhimashankar temple. You have to climb down about 230 steps to get to the temple. The entire path is covered, so you are safe from rain during monsoons.

While walking down, note the darshan line on the left side. It is the free-darshan line. Free darshan usually takes 1 hour. If you don’t want to wait, walk down to the bottom. Here you can find pandits who will take you inside the temple for a VIP darshan. The VIP darshan costs around Rs. 150-200 per person. During weekends and special holidays, the cost might rise. VIP darshan takes 20-30 minutes.

TIP:- Avoid coming to Bhimashankar temple during the weekend. It is super crowded, and VIP and free darshan take a long time.

HOW TO REACH BHIMASHANKAR TEMPLE?

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is 109 km from Pune and is a 3-hour long drive. There are two routes to Bhimashankar from Pune- via Mansar and Rajgurunagar. The road via Mansar is broad but less scenic, and the road via Rajgurunagar is a narrower but scenic route.

PUNE – BHOSARI – MOSHI – ALANDI FATA – CHAKAN – SHIROLI – PACHARNEWADI – BHORWADI – SHEWALEWADI – MANCHAR – LANDEWADI – SHINOLI – TALE GHAR – RAJPUR – BHIMASHANKAR

I recommend driving through both routes. Travel via Rajgurunagar en route to Bhimashankar temple and return via Manchar.

PLACES TO VISIT NEAR BHIMASHANKAR

Chaskaman dam.

If you take the Rajgurunagar route, you will come across the Chaskaman Dam. It is a beautiful sight. Lush green hills surround the dam.

If you visit after monsoons, you can walk down to the water. A steep path from the road leads to the water body. However, this is not possible during monsoons. The water level is on the rise and is unsafe. So, admire the dam from afar.

The road near Chaskaman Dam has a stall or two. Here, you can enjoy a steaming cup of tea and a plate of hot onion bhajis. If you are lucky, maybe even a Vada pav.

BHIMASHANKAR TREK

The most common and widely preferred way to Bhimashankar temple is by road. But the Bhimashankar trek is just as popular. If you are a trekking enthusiast, this trek should be on your list.

It is a 4-5 hour long trek. The trek begins from Khandas village. It is a moderate trek. The trail runs through the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary. So, look out for a wide range of flora and fauna.

Several companies organise treks to Bhimashankar .

This trek is scenic all year round. However, if you are a beginner, avoid this trek during the monsoon months.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is open year round. However, the best time to visit is during the monsoons.

During the monsoons, a dense fog descends, creating a magical scene. Also, during rainy months, the Sahyadri hills are dotted with thousands of small waterfalls. It is a breathtaking view.

Entrance to the stairway to Bhimashankar temple.

After the monsoons, the lush green mountains slowly turn yellow, and the waterfalls stop flowing. You might still spot one or two waterfalls. It is still beautiful at different times of the year.

Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple is one of the twelve jyotirlingas. You can read my guides on Omkareshwar , Ujjain , and Trimbakeshwar jyotirlingas.

I hope this guide was helpful, and if I missed something, let me know in the comments. Also, I hope this ignited your weekend wanderlust because

Can we take our car to the khandas village and park there safely??

You can park your car at khandas, but during shravan time, it is crowded and little bit difficult to find parking for cars. I generally go from Pune to Karjat by train and from there I reach Khandas by bus. Further after climbing Bhimashankar, I take bus to Pune, I don't come back to Khandas again.

The 10 Most Amazing Stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway

Where are the best places to visit along the Trans-Siberian Railway?

Ekaterinburg, novosibirsk, ulaanbaatar, vladivostok.

Travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway promises an adventure like no other, whether you want to venture from European Moscow to the Far Eastern city of Vladivostok, take the Trans-Mongolian through the Gobi Desert, or the Trans-Manchurian to Beijing. The majority of our customers spend no longer than a day aboard the train and disembark in search of cultural and historical wonders along the way. So, what are the 10 most amazing stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway?

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Moscow

Photo by Artem Beliaikin on Unsplash

The capital city of Russia, Moscow is the center of the country’s political, financial and historical life. Spending a weekend (or even longer!) in Moscow at the beginning or end of your Trans-Siberian journey allows you to explore this treasure chest of landmarks: enjoy a performance by the world’s leading ballet company at the Bolshoi Theater; absorb centuries of Russian history with a visit to the Kremlin; get acquainted with Russian and Soviet art at the Tretyakov Gallery; and admire the striking architecture of St Basil’s or Christ the Saviour Cathedral. After a day’s exploring, head to one of Moscow’s countless restaurants, bars or food markets for refreshments and a well-deserved rest.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Vladimir

Photo by  Artem Beliaikin  on  Unsplash

Russia’s seat of power was moved to Moscow following the 13 th century Mongol invasion, but before this, Vladimir was the capital of medieval Russia. The city, founded in 995 on a hilltop high above the Klyazma River, is home to several UNESCO monuments which have been preserved for nearly 900 years. Visitors can get a rare glimpse of the pre-Mongol architecture of the Assumption Cathedral, Cathedral of St Dmitry and Golden Gate, and visit one of the city’s history museums. Vladimir is part of the Golden Ring of ancient Russian cities and is located just 200km east of Moscow.

Straddling the border between Europe and Asia lies Ekaterinburg, the fourth most-populated city in Russia. Up until the collapse of the Soviet Union Ekaterinburg was a closed city, but is now home to just under 1.5 million people and a rich arts, music, sport and foodie scene. Ekaterinburg is also a fantastic base from which to explore the Ural Mountains dividing European Russia and Siberia. Those interested in Tsarist Russia should visit the Church of the Blood, which marks the spot where one of the darkest moments in Russian history unfolded: it stands on the now-demolished Ipatiev House where Tsar Nicholas II and his family were executed.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Novosib

Novosibirsk is Russia’s third-largest city and one of the world’s most rapidly growing cities, referred to as the capital of Siberia. In the city you can visit the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or the Theater of Opera and Ballet (the largest theater in Russia). Or for a day off the beaten track you can venture to Academgorodok, known as the Russian Silicon Valley. Alternatively, lovers of the outdoors who are looking for adventure can travel south from Novosibirsk to trek in the stunning Altai Mountains.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Baikal

Photo by Daria Gordova on Unsplash

Irkutsk is a major transit point on the Trans-Siberian Railway and an attractive destination for international tourists. A number of high-profile dissidents were exiled to Irkutsk during Tsarist times, including the famous Decembrists who revolted against Tsar Nicholas I. These banished intellectuals and political figures played a significant role in the cultural and educational development of Irkutsk, which is today a thriving student city. Aside from visiting museums and marvelling at the mix of architectural styles, many travellers disembark the Trans-Siberian in Irkutsk to travel to the Pearl of Siberia – Lake Baikal – which lies just an hour away.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Moscow

Ulan-Ude is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia and is located near the south-eastern shore of Lake Baikal. The city was established during the Mongol rule of Russia and one third of its 400,000 inhabitants are ethnic Buryat Mongols who mainly follow Buddhism. Ulan Ude’s distinct eastern atmosphere makes it one of the most unique stops on the Trans-Siberian Railway: after getting your fill of Russian Orthodoxy elsewhere, you can visit the Ivolginsky Datsan – the spiritual center of Buddhism in Russia; or head to the open-air Ethnographic Museum to learn about centuries of local history in the region. The Trans-Mongolian route separates from the Trans-Siberian a few kilometres after Ulan-Ude.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Vladivostok

Photo by Sung Shin on Unsplash

At the far end of the Trans-Siberian Railway, on the eastern shore of Russia, lies Vladivostok. Its name aptly translates as ‘Ruler of the East’ and Vladivostok has recently undergone extensive development, making it a beautiful place to explore. Travellers can adventure through the city on foot, take a funicular to the Eagle’s Nest Hill for a marvellous panorama of the cityscape, or sail out onto the Golden Horn Bay underneath the Russky Bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. The local cuisine is an interesting fusion of Far-Eastern and Russian dishes, and seafood lovers are in for a treat when dining out in Vladivostok’s excellent waterfront restaurants. Those ending their adventure in Vladivostok can easily travel on to South Korea, Japan or China.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Ulaanbaatar

Photo by Altansukh E on Unsplash

400km after crossing the Mongolian border the train stops in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia’s capital city which is home to half the country’s population. Explore the city’s vast central square, Sukhbaatar Square, visit its temples and monasteries, and learn about Mongolia’s heritage at the National History Museum (or see an impressive collection of dinosaur bones at the Natural History Museum!) During the summer the city basks in sun and hosts the Nadaam Festival in mid-July, Mongolia’s main sporting festival which is based around wrestling, horse-riding and archery. Winter sees some truly icy temperatures descend on Ulaanbaatar, which is the coldest capital city in the world.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Harbin, Ice Festival

Photo by Erica Li on Unsplash

Harbin is one of north-eastern China’s most important cities, where Han, Manchu and Russian cultures meet. One of the clearest examples of Harbin’s Russian influence is its architecture, leading the city to be compared to St Petersburg! Aside from walking the historic streets you can explore Harbin’s riverside parks or visit the Siberian Tiger Park. The city is most famous for its magical Ice and Snow Festival held in January and February each year.

the Trans-Siberian Railway, Beijing

Photo by zhang kaiyv on Unsplash

The final stop on the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Manchurian routes is Beijing. The capital of China showcases millennia of human civilization – from the ancient Great Wall of China, to the vast Forbidden City of medieval times, to the towering skyscrapers of the modern age. Spend a long weekend in Beijing walking the narrow streets (hutong) of the Inner City, sampling cuisine from all corners of China, or travelling outside the city limits to the Summer Palace and its spectacular imperial gardens. Whether Beijing is the first or final stop of your Trans-Siberian train journey, it’s sure to be an unforgettable one.

Whichever Trans-Siberian route you choose, book your tickets through Trans-Siberian Express. We have over 10 years of experience arranging the train trip of a lifetime for travellers from around the world.

Get ready to be whisked along on a smooth and magical ride on the Trans-Siberian Railway.
