Jor Bangla Temple

In 1655 AD, King Raghunath Singha, a Malla ruler, commissioned the construction of the Jorbangla Temple. Renowned for its unique Bengali architectural style, it stands as a prime attraction in Bishnupur. The temple is designed in the form of two huts topped with an ornate tower, adorned with intricate Terracotta carvings. The oldest brick temple, Rasmancha was commissioned by Malla King Bir Hambir in 1600 CE. The temple has one inner chamber housing the idols of Radha-Krishna.

Dalmadal Kaman Canon

This royal canon was built by Maharaja Bir Humber around 1600 AD. Dala means ‘a group’ and mardan means ‘to destroy’. And true to its name, this mammoth canon, made of 63 iron plates was used to defend the Malla territory against the enemies. Due to the lack of easy availability of pure iron, it is believed that charcoal was used to melt enormous amounts of iron in order to construct Dalmadal Kaman Canon. Moreover, due to its extensive weight, big wheels and elephants were used to carry the canon to the battleground. Legend has it, that the canon was lost after the decline of the Malla dynasty, only to be rediscovered later by the Britishers. This royal canon stands as an example of the great past of Bishnupur.

Your guide to Bishnupur—Bengal’s terracotta town

Miles and miles of fluorescent paddy fields, hills that cup brilliant blue ponds, tiny rivers that cut across the landscape, and the odd group of tribals dancing on the road—travelling to Bishnupur, a small town in West Bengal, is like travelling into a picture postcard.

Bishnupur may not ring a bell today, but there was a time when it was the cultural capital of Bengal. The prosperous Malla kings ruled over their empire from here. Bishnupur was famous world over for its arts, architecture, crafts, music, and textiles. And once you get past the narrow lanes and the mossy ruins of the town, the enchanting kingdom reveals itself in surprisingly well-preserved glory.

What to see and do in Bishnupur

Begin your day with the famous Terracotta temples. Though traces of the older structures can be found scattered across the town, the major temples—Rasmancha temple, Shyam Ray temple, Madan Mohan Temple, Jor-Bangla Temple, and Lalji Temple—are still in great condition and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Made over four hundred years ago, between 17th and 18th century, these temples display diverse styles of architecture. Rasmancha, for example, made in the year 1600 AD by king Bir Hambir for the annual ‘ras' festival, looks more like a baradari (pavillion) and less like a temple. The building stands on a high platform and is held together in an intricate pattern of thin bricks with indigenous mortar of lentils, spices, milk, rice husk, etc. Low-arched corridors run across its length and breadth, surrounding the dark pyramidal sanctum while the dark garbhagrigha is devoid of any ornamentation or deities.

The Southern Group of temples, not very far from Rasmancha, is made of laterite and is an interesting mix of architectural influences: single spires, curved roofs and arches, taken from contemporary architectural styles of Odisha, West Bengal, and Persia respectively. Some of these are painted in lime others are bare-bricked. Dotted by teak and jackfruit trees, enclosed in mossy walls, inhabited by birds, squirrels and critters, the place transports you into another time. The newest and the only ‘living temple' in Bishnupur is the Radhashyam Temple. Built in 1758, it stands a little away from the rest but is worth a visit for the local flavour of rural Bengal. You can offer prayers to Radha and Krishna glimmering in the dark sanctum, or sit by the gate and look at small town go by: elderly women in starched taant saris, men in dhuti, bare-bodied boys running around, and school girls walking home.

The Bishnupur Museum, also known as Acharya Jogesh Chandra Purakriti Bhawan, should be next on the list. This little museum in the middle of the town is home to hundreds of artefacts, figurines, and manuscripts that speak of the town's glorious past. The ground floor is dedicated to manuscripts, pictures and musical instruments from the Bishnupur Gharana, figures of Hindu and Jain deities and medieval models of Bankura Horses found in excavations. The first floor contains arts and craft like Terracotta tiles, Dasavatar playing cards and textiles. The most charming sight here, however, is the army of clay horses drying in the sun.  (The museum is shut on Mondays and national holidays.)

The Chinnamasta Temple, dedicated to the headless devi, is good for a quick evening visit. It's located in the shopping lane, next to the famous Dalmadal cannon of the Malla dynasty. The temple is built in the famous tantrik style of Bengal's temple architecture. Locals swear by the supernatural powers of the deity Chinnamasta. Stop by for some stories and lebu cha (lemon tea) or rong cha (black tea) and some tele bhaja (fritters) at one of the shacks outside.

(Tip: Local guides, certified by West Bengal Tourism, will give you a tour of the town for Rs250–300.)

What to buy in Bishnupur

Bishnupur is home to thousands of artisans and craftsmen who have continued to carry the town's cultural legacy. The weavers of Bishnupur create mythological stories on the panels of Baluchari saris, the potters mould lumps of clay into majestic Bankura Horses; ironsmiths fashion idols out of bell metal and brass and Sankha Banik, a specialised community of craftsmen, carve conch shells.

Terracotta work, however, remains the most exquisite craft here. Bankura Horses, which range from a few inches to over 5 feet in height, are not only famous within the country (you'd see them in many a hotel), but are also exported all over the world. Most shops are set up right outside the workshops on the Chinnamasta Road, at Dalmadal Para and are reasonably priced.

Where to eat in Bishnupur

Bishnupur has the perfect setting to sample authentic Bengali cuisine. Small hotels, tiny shacks, and unnamed shops sell the most delectable and affordable sweets, snacks and meals. Hotel Monalisa, for example, offers many versions of the Bengali Thali (primarily non-vegetarian). The restaurant at Bishnupur Tourist Lodge has good dining options including Bengali, North Indian and Chinese. For ‘jal-khabar', as the town calls its snacks, the small hotels/dhabas at the bus stand offer a rustic yet delectable menu of luchi, ghugni, singhara, mishti, chops, kachauri, and of course tea.

Sweets of Bishnupur are famous all over Bengal. Small shops selling traditional sweetmeats like pantua, mihi-dana, kodapak, sondesh, cham-cham and of course rosogulla can be found at every corner; each one is as good, if not better than the other. With the treats starting at as little as Rs5 a piece, we recommend you sample as many as you can, and pack some for home too.

When to visit Bishnupur

While the town has moderate summers, it is best to travel to Bishnupur in the cooler months between September and March.

The Bishnupur Festival, organised in the last week of December, in the Madan Mohan Temple Complex, is a great way to enjoy local music, dance, crafts, and culture as a whole. Craftsmen, musicians, singers and artists assemble from all over Bengal to showcase their skills and trains full of devotees make way into the town.

While the Bishnupur Festival showcases arts, crafts and textiles of Adi Malla's capital, the Bishnupur Music Festival brings together some of the biggest names in Bishnupur Gharana of Hindustani Music (set up by Bahadur Khan, a disciple of Tansen, under the reign of Raghunath Singh Deo II).

Performances from prominent singers and musicians from the only musical gharana (style) from Bengal render the town magical every evening. Sitting in the shadows of the temple, on deep red earth, under the starry skies and listening to the maestros perform, is an experience like none other – just like Bishnupur is a town like no other.

Hotels in Bishnupur

Bishnupur is a very small town with limited places to stay. WBTDC guesthouse, Bishnupur Tourist Lodge is a good option with rooms, suits, open spaces and complimentary breakfast. (Air-conditioned rooms start at Rs1,200).

Banalata Resort , a little off the main town, at the edge of Joypur Jungle, offers country views, forest safaris, fishing and a multi-cuisine restaurant. (Air-conditioned rooms start at Rs2,280).

Should you not wish to stay Bishnupur can also be easily done as a day trip from bigger towns like Jamshedpur and Kolkata.

How to reach Bishnupur

Bishnupur is well connected by rail and road from Kolkata and Jamshedpur (Tatanagar). The nearest airport is Kolkata (139km), from where it is a three-hour drive, or a three-hour train journey. Jamshedpur (167km), in Jharkhand, is about four hours by road.

The drive to the town is picturesque and green, with paddy fields, lakes, hills and tiny hutments along the way. There are, however, limited options to eat on the way, so carrying your own picnic is a great idea. The train journey can be basic though beautiful.

Crafted from local laterite and brick, the temples were covered with terracotta tiles depicting scenes from the epics Mahabharata and Ramayana. Shyam Ray Temple, the twin shrines of Jorbangla and the Rasmancha, Lalji Temple, Raghunathji Temple, and Madan Mohan Temples are the must-visit. Besides, the charming town of Bishnupur is also known for its traditional handloom saris as well as terracotta pottery, artifacts and jewelry and the Bishnupur school of painting. The most famous of the terracotta products are the handmade beautiful jars, disks, terracotta horses, elephants, Ganesh and Nataraj. The famous Baluchari sarees depicting scenes from the Mahabharata on the border and pallu are also created here. Made of tussar silk, the exquisite design and fabric make these saris one of the costliest in the country. The rich tradition of the Bishnupur Gharana, a school of Hindustani classical music is kept alive through local music academies. Bishnupur Mela is the major festival celebrated every year in the last week of December, which holds the status of a national fair. This four-day festival celebrates the cultural richness of the region and provides the visitors a glimpse of the Bengali cultural heritage. There are various stalls of artworks and trinkets including sea-shell works, terracotta works, and clothes, sweets, etc. The local handmade fabrics and the handprints clothes are simply exquisite and lure domestic as well as international tourists. A recent addition is Bishnupur Utsab, held after the Mela. It is a classical music and dance festival in recognition of the 'Bishnupur Gharana' in music. Besides, Snake festival, Durga Puja and Diwali are the other festivals celebrated with great pomp here. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata is the nearest airport which is about 140 km from Bishnupur. Adi Malla established the Malla dynasty. Jagat Malla, the 10th Malla king shifted his kingdom to Bishnupur. Due to short supply of stone in Bengal, burnt clay bricks came as a substitute and architects of Bengal found the new way of a beautiful craft known as ‘Terracotta’. During the seventeenth century, the art of terracotta reached its highest peak. Raja Jagat Malla and his descendants built numerous temples made of terracotta and stone art.

1. Rasmancha Rasmancha, the oldest brick temple was established by the King Hambir in 1600 AD. The majestic temple is architecturally so unique and unparalleled that it is one of its kind in the whole Bengal as well as the country. Rasmancha proudly stands on a laterite plinth and owns a single chamber neighbouring hut shaped turrets along with an elongated tower. You will get to witness a heritage that is enthroned with a pyramidal superstructure and is blessed with three circumbulatory galleries, tranquil pillars and mysterious arches with terracotta lotus motif. In the presence of daylight, when you will be walking through the galleries, you will feel history whispering in your ears by the language of light and shade. In the dark, glowing lights from the monument makes a thrilling ambience.

2. Mrinmoyee temple Mrinmoyee temple, the oldest temple of Bishnupur was established by King Jagat Malla in 997 AD. According to local history, Maa Mrinmoyee ordered the king in his dreams to build the temple. Goddess Durga is worshipped here as Maa Mrinmoyee. Although the temple had to be reconstructed, the idol made of Ganga clay remained same. Experience the oldest Durga Puja of Bengal (1021 years) and rich heritage immersing into a different flavor of religious warmth during the Puja. The festival starts with the worship of “Baro thakurani”, “Mejo thakurani” and “Choto thakurani” respectively, after setting up of a clay pot or “Ghat”. On the sacred moment of “Mahastami- Sandhipuja”, a cannon is fired and then vegetables are sacrificed.

3. Jorbangla Temple Jorbangla temple was established by Malla king Raghunath Singh in 1655. The temple is one of the exceptional examples of the terracotta art of West Bengal and owns a unique architectural structure. The temple is named as “Jorbangla” because of its special “Do Chala” shape. The temple has its roof along with double-sided curved thatch, known as porch and shrine respectively, joined together. See the detailed sculptures of terracotta portraying multiple scenes from Mahabharata, Ramayana, Krishna’s childhood on its walls and get amazed. The panels decorated with terracotta-tales beautifully depict epic scenes like ‘Bhisma’s Sarasajya’, ‘Marriage of Ram-Sita’, ‘Maa Parbati with her two sons’, ‘Balgopal’s activities’, ‘story of Laxman and Surpanakha’ and many more.

4. Shyam Rai temple The temple was built by King Raghunath Singh in 1643, is popularly known as ‘Panch-chura’ temple as it owns five pinnacles. The temple looks beautiful with triple arched passage on its four sides. It is one of the star attractions of Bishnupur because of its breathtaking terracotta art-forms on both interior and exterior panels. Various scenes based on religious stories like ‘Indra fighting sitting on Oirabot’, ‘Saga of Ram and Raban’,’Glimpses of Krishna Lila’, ‘love of Radha-Krishna’, ‘Hunting scenarios from old society’ etc. are truly representing the terracotta art at its best. Another attraction of this temple is a giant Raschakra that depicts various forms of ‘Radha-Krishna Lila amidst of Gopinis’.

5. Gar Darja In Bishnupur, there are two proud gateways to the fort. Local people addressed them as ‘Gar Darja’. Beside ‘Murcha Hill’, you will see a small mound made of stone. After crossing the small gate, there comes a gigantic gate that was the entrance of the Bishnupur Royal Kingdom. ‘Gar Darja’ was made to protect the royals from enemies. It has a huge terrace and secret chambers. Soldiers used to keep track trespassers from the ‘Gar’ and made surprise attacks to smash them.

6. Madanmohan Temple When you are in Bishnupur, this one pinnacled ‘Bishnu’ temple is a must see. Certainly, the temple is one of the main structural forms carrying the message of finest terracotta art in its body. Malla Raja Durjan Singh Dev established the temple in the name of Lord Madan Mohan in 1694. This is an active temple, till date.

7. Jore Shreni Temple / Poramatir Haat Area Though known as Jor Mandir (meaning pair of temples), it is actually a complex of three Eka-Ratna temples: Two big temples of same size and a small one. These temples were built by Malla King Krishna Singh (pronunciation: sing-ho) in 1726. These ‘Eka-Ratna’ or ‘single towered’ temples are made of rust-coloured laterite. The big temple has a square base of 11.8m X 11.8m and a height of 12.8m above a low platform. The roofs of all three temples are typical Bengali ‘chala’ type surmounted by a ‘sikhara’ or tower. Around the innermost sanctuary where the idol is kept, there are covered porches on three sides. Except the rear wall, on each of these three sides there are three arched openings.

8. Archeological Museum Acharya Yogesh Chandra Purakirti Bhawan is the local Museum in Bishnupur and is a must see for people who love archeology, art and history. You will get to see around 100 sculptures from the 10th-12th century, near about 5000 manuscripts, different types of folk arts, photographs, irreplaceable specimens of textiles and many more ancient items.

9. Lalbandh – History remains in water Bir Singh built the seven lakes named Pokabandh, Shyambandh, Kalindibandh, Jamunabandh, Gantatbandh, Krishnabandh, and Lalbandh in 1658. Lakes were made for drinking water and to protect the town from enemy. Malla Raj Raghunath Singha is said to be infatuated with a Persian dancer, called Lalbai. He took her under his protection and later dug this large pond in her name Lalbandh.

10. Sareswar and Saileswar Temple These twin temples are dedicated to Mahadev and located in the village of Dihar which is 8 km distant from Bishnupur. You will see a Nandi Bull seated at the entrance of the Sareswar Temple as if it is protecting it. These temples, made of laterite stone, are majestic examples of Oriya Deul style architecture. This place becomes a pilgrimage during ‘Mahashivratri’ festival and ‘Gajan’.

Bishnupur: The Land Of Terracotta

Bishnupur or Vishnupur is a little town in the Bankura district of West Bengal. The town was the administrative capital under the reign of the Malla kings. It is believed that the town derives its name from the Hindu  God, Vishnu.

Bishnupur has a rich cultural past, and much of this is evident in the architecture and intricate handicraft that the town boasts of. The town is especially known for its intricate terracotta work. Jewellery, artefacts and pottery made of terracotta are particularly known.

Bishnupur is also known for its wide variety of Baluchari sarees, a distinct musical Gharana, distinctive art of making Dashavatar and Naqsh Tash, articles of conch cells, coconut shell carving, bell metal craft, lantern etc.

The most interesting remains found in Bishnupur are a number of terracotta temples as well as stone temples representing the most complete set of specimens of the Kalinga school of temple architecture as well as the typical Bengali style of temple architecture.

The best season to visit Bishnupur is winter. The temperature remains comfortable and is apt for sightseeing. The best months to visit are October, November, December, February, March. August marks the beginning of the Monsoon season and lasts till early October. 

There are many tourist spots in Bishnupur, out of which I will discuss the top tourist places of Bishnupur.

1. Rasmancha

The Rasmancha pavilion used for housing the idols of Lord Krishna from other temples during the rash festival was built in brick by King Veer Hambir in 1600 AD. This is the oldest brick temple in Bishnupur and is shaped like an elongated pyramidal tower surrounded by hut-shaped turrets.

The outermost gallery is elegantly surrounded by Bengal hut-type roofs. The floor is paved with bricks. The entire structure stands on a high platform made up of laterite blocks. However, this heritage site is protected under the Archeological Survey of India(ASI).

2. Radha Govinda Temple

Radha Govinda Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Bishnupur town in Bankura district of West Bengal. The temple was built by Krishna Singh, the Malla king in 1729 CE. The temple is situated right opposite Radha  Madhav  Temple.

The temple is located about two km from Bishnupur bus stand,4.5 km from Bishnupur Junction Railway Station and 2.5 km from Bishnupur new bus stand. There are seven Eka Ratna (meaning single pinnacle)temples located in Bishnupur. Radha  Govinda temple is one of them.

It is a beautiful laterite temple built as per Eka Ratna temple architecture style dedicated to Lord Krishna. The temple has a sloping roof surmounted by a single shikhara thus making it as Eka Ratna. The temple is made of rust-coloured laterite.

The roof of the temple is a typical Bengali ‘Chala’ type surmounted by a shikhara or tower. There are covered porches on three sides around the sanctum. Except for the rear wall, on each of the three sides of the temple, there are three arched openings. 

3. Madan Mohan Temple

The Madanmohan temple was built by king Durjana Singh Dev by the late 17 th century. The architecture of the temple is Eka Ratna style, has a square flat roof with curved cornices and a pinnacle over the top.

Madanmohan temple is one of those temples in Bishnupur where the deity is still worshipped. The terracotta temple was constructed within the fort complex in 1694 AD. It was built in the Eka Ratna style of temple architecture with a square flat roof, cornices that are curved and a pinnacle on the top.

This temple is even more ornately carved and sculptured than the other famous terracotta temples in Bishnupur. Anecdotes and stories of the legend of Lord Vishnu, also known as Madan Mohan are quite famous in Bishnupur and also during the rule of Malla kings. Stories from the Mahabharata, the Ramayana and the Puranas, adorn the ceilings and walls in the form of paintings and carvings.

4. Jorebangla Temple

The Jorbangla temple resembles two thatched huts joined together and a single tower. This temple and brick were built by the Malla King Raghunath Singh in 1655. The structure was erected on a high metre high platform using laterite bricks.

The entire outer surface is decorated with terracotta plaques displaying various aspects of human life and culture, gods and goddesses, animals, floral and geometrical designs. The architecture includes two skeuomorphic construction that depicts the conventional thatched huts of the region, both the huts are connected together and are surmounted by a single tower.

In the local language, such huts are known as the porch. With the help of laterite bricks, the entire temple is erected on a high elevated platform which is one metre in height. Moreover, the roofs of the temple boast a classical Chala architecture along with the terracotta works that are unequally enthralling.

5. Gum Garh

The word “Gum Garh” can be translated to “torture tower”.It is said that if one enters inside this tower, he cannot return. This little known monument is located in the interior of Bishnupur. It is situated on top of a small mound.

Nothing is known about the construction period or even the purpose of this structure. The structure has no door or window. It is square in shape. Few people believed that it was used as a prison and the others believe that it was used as a granary.

6. Garh Darwaja

Garh Darwaja is a Terracotta gateway situated in Bishnupur. This gateway is also known as the “Chota  Patthar  Darwaja “ or “small gateway” of Bishnupur. Garh Darwaja is an arched terracotta structure with a plain exterior.

At a short distance from this gateway lies another gateway which is larger in size and is known as the “Bara Patthar Gateway” or “Main Gateway” of Bishnupur.

Apart from the terracotta temples and monuments, there are some places not very far away from Bishnupur which gives us immense scenic beauty.

Susunia is a 1500 ft high hill of Southern West Bengal, situated at the northwestern part of Bankura district. It is often believed that Raja Chandra Varma had once built his fort on this hill. With plenty of natural beauty in the form of cascading waterfalls, plenty of greenery and river Gandheshwari flowing down the hill.

Susunia is a picture-perfect look with the rock faces meant for mountaineers. Susunia has rich resources when it comes to medicine. It is well known as an archaeological and fossil site. The fossil of lion, giraffe, hyena and many other animal species was discovered from this area.

The oldest rock inspiration of West Bengal is located here. There is an ancient curved monolith standing at the point where the spring water is coming out of another stone curved project. The top of the hill is tough to climb because of the stony path through the forest. But it can be a thrilling experience for mountaineers.

Rock climbing and camping are organised in the winter season. Netkamla and  Bindya Jam are the villages near Susunia which houses the famous Dokra art craftsmen.

8. Mukutmanipur

Mukutmanipur is 80 km from Bishnupur. It’s a place of relaxation, far away from the crowded and busy life. The 86 sq Km giant lake with blue deep water, formed by the Kangsabati water reservoir provides an irresistible temptation to take a boat ride. The special attraction point is Deer Park,5.5 km away from the main place.

9. Dal Madol

The cannon named Dal Madol was built by the Malla kings to fight the Maratha invasion. This cannon is near Chinnamasta temple and is significant for the people of Bishnupur as well as Bengal. The cannon measures about 3.8 m in length and has a barrel of 28.5 cm.

It was built in the year  1742 under  Raja Gopal Singh to protect Bishnupur from the Marathas. The cannon is built with iron materials and does not have any rust, though it has been exposed to rain and sun since the 18 th century.

Dal  Madol cannon is massive, measuring about 4 meters in length and having a barrel of approx. 30 cm. Due to its enormous size, large wheels and elephants were required to move the cannon to battlefields.

10. Acharya Jogesh Chandra Purakriti Bhawan

The Acharya Jogesh Chandra Purakriti Bhawan in Bishnupur is a museum related to art and archaeology. In the archaeological gallery, there are tools from the Mesolithic and Paleolithic era, metal ornaments, terracotta structures etc.

This Museum accounts for the coins and artefacts from the ancient days of Bishnupur, starting from the Gupta kings to the Pal kingdom. Also, there are contemporary art and paintings, manuscripts and rare photographs.

A section of the Bhawan is dedicated to the musical culture of Bishnupur Gharana and has many instruments and photographs displayed. The Bhawan remains open on Saturdays and Sundays for the tourists.

11. Bishnupur Fair

The Bishnupur fair (mela) is held every year around the last week of December. This fair stretches over four days and people from all the nearby villages come together to celebrate the agricultural season. A recent addition is the Bishnupur  Utsav, held after the mela.

It is a classical music and dance festival in recognition of the ‘’Bishnupur  Gharana’’ in music. Nowadays every year, many celebrity singers also attend the fair to increase the speciality of the fair.

12. Shopping In Bishnupur

Bishnupur is also the place for shopaholics. Bishnupur is widely famous for its Baluchari sarees, shawls. It is a unique sari which is handwoven in richly dyed silk. They depict stories from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Some designs include kings, noblemen and graceful dancing girls with celebratory scenes and ceremonies. Many sari retail shops are available on the streets of Bishnupur. Terracotta products like handmade jars, disks, horses, elephants and Ganesha are also popular buys. Bellmetalware and conch-shell jewellery are also worth buying.

13. Joypur Jungle

It’s a dense forest located 10KM away from Bishnupur. It’s a thick forest stippled with sky crapping Sal, Palash, Kusum, Mohua, Neem and Teak trees, which does not allow the daring sunlight to touch the bottom at some places.

Staying in an exceedingly dense forest with noticed deer herds crossing the lush forest path every now and then. One can also find elephants crossing the roads but very rare. There are also some resorts which are located focussing on the forest itself. Adventurous people can have a thrilling night stay there.

Apart from the above-mentioned places and things to do, there are many other places to visit in Bishnupur. One can have a great travel experience in this small city especially people who love to do photography, art and craft lovers and shopping lovers.

1. Rasmancha

This historical building was built in 600 century by the Malla King, Vir Hambir. The temple has a unique and unparalleled structure. It stands erect on a square shaped lateral plinth. A pyramidal superstructure covers the plinth. The inner sanctum of the temple is enclosed by three circular shaoed galleries. These galleries are surmounted by a colossal pyramidal structure. Further, these majestic pyramidal structures are embellished with exquisite terracotta work and motifs. Rasmancha was built in order to enable a mass scale worship of the deities during the Ras festival. This was a significant festival during the reign of the Malla kings. During this festival, images of deities from across the town were brought to this temple and venerated. As this mammoth structure lights up during the night, it provides a mesmerizing sight to the devotees.

2. Jorbangla Temple

Jorbangla Temple was built in 1655 A.D by Raghunath Singha, a Malla King. The temple is known for its unique architectural style, particular to Bengal. It draws much from ancient Bengal architecture. The temple is constructed on the shape of two huts surmounted by a tower. One of the two huts serves as a porch, while the inner hut functions as the shrine. The Jorbangla Temple is famed for its opulent terracotta structure and delicate carvings on the walls. The carvings on the walls depict episodes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and other prominent holy scriptures. The temple witnesses an enormous number of devotees from across the globe every year. This temple besides attracting massive numbers of devotees, also witnesses a number of students and archaeologists, who are interested in ancient architecture.

3. Madanmohan Temple

Built in the 17th century, Madanmohan temple is constructed in the Ekaratna (single tower) style. It has a flat square-shaped roof with craved cornices. It is surmounted by a pinnacle. Made of mud and terracotta, the inner walls of the temple depict various scenes from the Hindu scriptures.

4. Dalmadal Kaman Canon

This royal canon was built by Maharaja Bir Humber around 1600 AD. Dala means ‘ a group ’ and mardan means ‘ to destroy ’. And true to its name, this mammoth canon, made of 63 iron plates was used to defend the Malla territory against the enemies. Due to the lack of easy availability of pure iron, it is believed that charcoal was used to melt enormous amounts of iron in order to construct Dalmadal Kaman Canon . Moreover, due to its extensive weight, big wheels and elephants were used to carry the canon to the battleground. Legend has it, that the canon was lost after the decline of the Malla dynasty, only to be rediscovered later by the Britishers. This royal canon stands as an example of the great past of Bishnupur.

5. Radhe Govind Temple

The Radhe Govind Temple was built in the 1729 A.D. by Krishna Singha, another of the Malla kings. The structure of this temple resembles the multiple other temples built by the Malla kings in this region. Made of mud and terracotta, this temple is widely known for its intricate craftsmanship. The shrine is devoted to the pair of Radha and Govind and multitudes of devotees from across the globe visit the place in veneration of the two Gods.

The town of Bhisnupur is thus renowned not only for its opulent terracotta work and baluchari saris, but also much frequently visited by devotees who seek calm and peace in the many temples that stand as proofs of the majestic rule of the Malla kings.

Bishnupur is 27 Kms away from Imphal City on Tiddim Road. Here stands the conical temple of Lord Vishnu built in 1467 during the reign of King Kyamba. It is interesting because of its antiquity and artchitectural design which was influenced by Chinese style. Bishnupur is also known for its stoneware production. The district head quarted is popular for hill-grown oranges, yongchak (tree-bean) and vegetables. Shoibum (fermented bamboo-shoot) scents the air around the town market.

Bishnupur is one of the smallest districts in Manipur, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up in its natural beauty, historical and cultural attractions. A tourist looking to have a peaceful but quality time will find it a great place to be in. It is extremely popular among Japanese tourists, and particularly those that are the descendants of Japanese armed forces. There is a famous Vishnu Temple too, which reminds visitors of its rich past. There is a waterfall, a lake, hills, and a national park, all of which make for some exciting sightseeing and exploration.

While travelling to Bishnupur, you can observe the lifestyle of the people, most of whom are engaged in agriculture, which is their primary source of livelihood. It also celebrates several festivals throughout the year, one of the most famous of which is Lai Haraoba. Celebrated in May, it is dedicated to Lord Thangjing, an ancient deity which predates Hinduism. Planning a visit in April would give you an opportunity to be a part of the Cheiraoba festival.

Interestingly, it coincides with the Meitei New Year. Some of the temples which you can visit in Bishnupur are Ibudhou Thangjing, Konung Lairembi and Ibudhou Pakhangba Khubam. A particularly beautiful sight is that of the Sangai, which is a brow antlered deer found in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake. It is the largest freshwater lake in eastern India and is home to floating marshes which are locally called phumdi. Once there, you can also observe the lifestyle of the villagers who live in close proximity to the lake.

Another place which you should visit during your trip to Bishnupur in Manipur is Keibul Lamjao National Park. It is the last natural habitat of the sangai, which is fondly called the dancing deer of the state. Other than sangai, the park is home to other animals like hog deer, otter, water fowls and migratory birds. There are two watch towers which offer some great views of the wildlife.

‘Burglary Tourism’: 3 Members of Foreign Crime Group Sentenced for Carlsbad Home Break-in

Three men who local prosecutors say were part of a foreign burglary crew that broke into a Carlsbad home were sentenced Monday to state prison terms.

Prosecutors say the defendants, who hail from Chile and Italy, operated much like other foreign theft groups whose members enter the U.S. through the ESTA Visa Waiver program, then target homes in wealthy neighborhoods.

San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan said in a statement that the case was “part of a crime spree that has plagued our nation where organized criminal rings, often with criminal records in their own country, are given a visa to the United States that they use to commit burglary tourism.”

In this case, police were called to a home on Jan. 25 and spotted a vehicle with stolen plates, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office .

Police surrounded the home and saw the men running from the residence into neighboring yards. The men were eventually caught and found to be wanted for similar crimes in Illinois and Colorado, the D.A.’s Office said.

Christian Tapia, 39 and Romai Aranedapogge, 36, were sentenced to six years in prison, while Joe Acevedo, 20, received a four-year prison sentence.

All three pleaded guilty last month to charges of conspiracy to commit burglary, residential burglary, identity theft and resisting arrest.

“These criminals not only stole cash and valuables from the victims, but they also stole the community’s peace of mind,” Stephan said. “The message is clear: If organized criminal burglary rings come to San Diego County to commit crime, they will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

New Zealand tourist killed in robbery attempt at Southern California mall

The victim of a botched robbery attempt at an upscale mall south of Los Angeles has been identified as a woman from New Zealand

LOS ANGELES -- A 68-year-old tourist from New Zealand was struck and killed by a car during a botched robbery at an upscale mall in a popular Southern California beach city south of Los Angeles, police said.

Violence broke out Tuesday afternoon at Newport Beach's Fashion Island mall when two men, one with a gun, tried to rob a woman and her husband at a Barnes and Noble store, Newport Beach police Sgt. Steven Oberon said at a news conference.

The woman was dragged into the street by one of the suspects and killed by a third man driving a white sedan, Oberon said, adding that the three men then fled in the sedan.

The woman was identified by police Wednesday as Patricia McKay, 68, who was visiting from New Zealand.

Newport Beach police officers pursued the three suspects in the white sedan onto an interstate and eventually arrested the men.

Police said one of the suspects fired his gun three times during the robbery, but no one was struck.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon called the killing “an absolute tragedy” in a radio interview Thursday . Luxon knew McKay’s husband, former bank chairman Doug McKay, very well, he said.

"He’s a great man and it’s a great family. … I think the family will be in huge shock and all our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Luxon told Newstalk ZB.

Without identifying Patricia McKay by name, a spokesperson for New Zealand’s Foreign Ministry said in an emailed statement that consular officials were providing assistance to the family of a citizen killed in Newport Beach.

Record number of travelers expected to hit the road for the Fourth of July

Nearly 4.1 million Illinois residents are traveling over the Fourth of July holiday, AAA says.

Travelers can expect congested roads, crowded airports and extended travel times heading into Thursday’s Fourth of July holiday.

AAA projects travelers will set a record, with more than 4.1 million Illinoisans and nearly 70.9 million people nationwide expected to travel 50 miles or more between June 29, the start of the holiday travel period, and Sunday.

AAA also predicts that 60.6 million will drive, 5.7 million will fly and 4.6 million will use other means of travel.

O’Hare and Midway airports are expected to handle more than 1.75 million passengers between Wednesday, and Monday based on airline predictions. O’Hare is expected to see 1.43 million passengers and Midway up to 320,000 travelers — a 10.4% increase over last year.

“As one of the nation’s busiest airport systems, O’Hare and Midway International Airports are ready to welcome the many passengers coming to our City for the Fourth of July weekend,” said Jamie L. Rhee, who heads the Chicago Aviation Department. “The great employees at both airports, along with everyone at the [Aviation Department], will work tirelessly to ensure a safe, efficient and enjoyable holiday travel experience for our passengers.”

For those traveling by car, gas prices have risen slightly throughout the state. The new motor fuel tax that went into effect Monday increases the levy to 47 cents per gallon from 45 cents.

As of Tuesday, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Illinois is $3.83, according to AAA’s gas prices tracker.

Traffic congestion will be a major concern for motorists traveling on the holiday, said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for the AAA-Auto Club Group.

“ We recommend that people leave extra early as congestion is likely to be heavy in the afternoon and evening hours,” Hart told the Sun-Times. “We want everyone to get to their destination safely, so be sure to have seatbelts on, no distracted driving and know where you’re going.

“If using a navigation system, program the destination before driving. Also, we urge all motorists to avoid driving while impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other drug, choose a designated driver.”

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car on or before July 4 are between 2 and 7 p.m.

To beat the peak traffic, INRIX recommends that drivers begin their journey in the morning and, for travelers returning home Sunday to avoid rush-hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

Street closures are expected to start Thursday at 9 p.m. and Friday at 12:01 a.m. and continue into the weekend for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race .

The race is set to take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday in Grant Park.

The National Weather Service forecast shows highs of 89 degrees on Wednesday, 85 for Thursday, 83 for Friday and 81 on Saturday. There is also a chance of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday.

To avoid traffic and other travel issues, residents and visitors are encouraged to take public transit when possible over the weekend.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A wildfire burning near the entrance of Denali National Park and Preserve forced the temporary closure Monday of one of Alaska’s most popular tourist destinations.

Cars were turned around at the park’s only entrance, tour buses were canceled and public facilities, including the visitor’s center, were closed at the park, which is about a five-hour drive north of Anchorage.

Trails were also closed Sunday, as were campgrounds for both existing and new reservations, the park service said in a statement. About 150 National Park Service employees housed in a facility near the fire were evacuated, park spokesperson Paul Ollig said in an email. An evacuation center was set up in the nearby town of Healy.

About 50 firefighters and aircraft dropping retardant and water contained the fire north of the park’s entrance, the Bureau of Land Management’s Alaska Fire Service said in a late Sunday update.

The fire burning in black spruce was reported Sunday about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) north of the entrance to the national park, home to Denali, the tallest mountain on the North American continent. The wildfire was estimated to be about half of a square mile (1.3 kilometers) in size.

The fire is burning on the west side of the Nenana River, which separates the fire from the national park.

Officials said there were no immediate threats to structures. The Denali Borough said on its website that the fire is burning northwest, farther into the park, and away from a tourist area on the highway, commonly referred to as Glitter Gulch, that includes hotels, gift shops and restaurants.

The weather could provide some help for firefighters, with cooler temperatures and a chance of isolated thunderstorms expected later Monday. A strong low-pressure system is expected to bring westerly winds on Tuesday, following by cooler and wetter weather, the fire service said.

As of Monday, 309 wildfires so far this year have burned nearly 672 square miles (1,740 square kilometers) in Alaska, the nation’s largest state. Seventeen of those fires started in the last day.
