The Bobike Tour Exclusive rear mounted children’s bike seat is a smart, protective, comfortingly large and cocoon-like bike seat with the clever touch of security locks.

When I revealed the Bobike from it’s packaging, I was impressed by it’s smart appearance, but immediately concerned that I’d been sent a cream-coloured version. Panic set in! Admittedly it has survived pretty well over the weeks of use and is still looking really good.

The shape of the seat provides a wonderful shell more so than many on the market, protecting your child from every inevitability. It certainly did its job shielding my son from harms way, as the first time I attached it to the bike, I had fitted the seat too far back, completely unstabilising the back end and causing the bike and my son to topple over. Don’t worry, the Bobike saw to it that he was untouched by the ground, and totally unfazed by the whole experience as he just lay their trying to claw his way out of his helmet that had been bugging him.

I was sent the bike seat with the universal adaptor that is fixed onto the column of your bike. It has been great with bike seats in the past but something is definitely not quite right with this one. I’ve spent hours waiting for the “click” to let me that the bars have neatly slotted into the right place and that I can put my child into the seat. A few times I willed it to be true but then a bit of pulling at the bike seat made me realise that yet again it hadn’t worked. I would never recommend this method of fixing this heavy bike seat to a bike, as it is exhausting and very time consuming.

It has taken me a while to get used to the bike straps – the tops buckle into the fabric of the seat itself. When I first put them on I was concerned about them coming out and once one did. This is not the fault of the actual straps just my ineptitude at using them. It was certainly a good lesson that you have to triple check they have “clicked” into place, which can be fiddly with a young child wriggling to get out. Of course the straps do mean that a child cannot unhook itself from the seat and that will be useful, as our son gets older.

Feet are also buckled into place, a reassuring feature. The height of the back and the length of the ankle/ leg guards all change and so will develop while your child grows. It dries quickly after getting wet and has survived some pretty bad downpours recently, without any obvious impact.

Another neat feature of the bike seat is that it comes with a padlock that is internal and locks round underneath the saddle of the bike it’s attached to. It is just a clever way to feel a bit more secure about your bike.   

Overall I genuinely liked the Bobike rear mounted maxi tour children’s bike seat because fundamentally it protected my child incredibly well.

I’m unsure as to whether I would choose this against others on the market, partly due to the experience of the weight that seems to make me feel like my bike is less balanced than it has been with other child seats and the experience of trying to get it on and off the bike is beyond irritating, it now lives on it!

For those who are keen to have an incredibly protective seat, and not bothered about it being a permanent feature on your bike, then this will take care of your little one, no problem.

The Exclusive tour plus is the updated version of the Exclusive tour edition. We have given the Exclusive line a make-over so that this international bestseller complies even better to the wishes and requirements of its fans and is more user-friendly. The Bobike Exclusive tour plus is the perfect choice for longer trips. The seat features an adjustable headrest, a LED light, a new 5-point seatbelt with soft and luxurious padding for extra comfort and is suitable to transport children with a body weight between 9 to 22 kg (19,84 to 48,5 lb). The seat comes including a new frame mounting sytem which eliminates the step of having to mount the Easy mount to the frame bar because the mounting system is already integrated in the seat. This makes the seat lighter and easier to mount. It fits on round and oval seat tubes and is specifically designed to accomodate the brake cable and avoid it being pinched. This system fits on bikes with or without a carrier.

Review: Bobike Maxi Tour child’s bicycle seat

The mistake I made when I received this Bobike Tour Exclusive child seat was to assume it would take ages to fit on my bicycle. As a result it sat in the garage for almost two weeks until I had the time to tackle the job.

When I eventually got around to it, I was very pleasantly surprised to have it mounted on my bike in just 15 minutes. It was very straightforward and required only the one Allen key to complete the job.

This particular model is essentially made up of two components; a hardened steel fixing that you attach to the bike and a detachable seat for the child. The seat seems to be held very firmly in place and I can’t imagine it coming apart very easily.

My eldest daughter, who is almost five, was particularly keen to go out for a ride and so we found a suitable area with no traffic to test the Bobike. I confess that I was flummoxed as to how I was meant so safely get my daughter in the seat.

My bike is very basic and doesn’t have a stand that could have taken the weight while I lifted her in. What followed was a hilarious scene where I laid the seat on the ground and she laid down in it while I strapped her in. I then lifted child and seat on to the fixing and to my amazement got it in place first time.

In an ideal world I ’ d have got my wife or someone else to steady the bike while I lifted her in but there weren ’ t any responsible adults around to help me at the time. I would keep this in mind if you are interested in buying the seat.

I hadn’t used one of these seats before so wasn’t feeling massively confident at first. I repeatedly asked my daughter if she felt comfortable and safe and she reassured me she did. Having the weight of a young child on the back destabilised the bike, especially going uphill where I eventually chose to walk. In fairness, I think you’d get this with any similar product so I you can’t criticise Bobike for this and it was much easier on to ride on a flat road.

The Bobike itself seems very protective. It offers side impact protection around the head and you can strap your child’s feet in place which offers extra reassurance.

One issue I had was the shoulder straps coming undone. The anchors, which are detachable, are set very low in the seat and so they were slightly below the height of my daughter ’ s shoulders. As a result the left hand strap popped out of its socket at one point which wasn’t very reassuring. I was surprised at this as the product is designed for children up to six years of age but it seems Helen might be too big for it.

Ultimately this was the only criticism I could make. I haven’t had a chance to take our baby out in it yet but I suspect she’d get on much better in the seat because of her small size.

In summary, if you enjoy cycling this may be the product for you, but I’d recommend   it for smaller children. Expect to pay around £ 130. For further information about the Bobike and stockists please go to Bobike.com.

The Bobike Exclusive Maxi is a bicycle safety seat that can be mounted on the back of your bike and is suitable for children from approximately 9 months till 6 years of age or with a body weight of 22 kg. Click & Go mounting material for mounting the seat on the carrier isincluded. This attachment is suitable for EN 1487 approved luggage carriers with a width of 120-175mm. There is a separate mounting bracket available for bikes without a carrier.
