I'm a self-taught painter. Stylistically I feel an affinity to surrealism, symbolism, and the decadents - with a healthy appreciation of the Pre-Raphaelites and the Nazarenes.  I love strong lines, and containment. I destest the degenerate cezannisms/renoirisms that led to the greater part of the 20th century being an artistic wasteland... Not that I dislike wastelands, but we must be particular in which particular dystopia we choose to invest ourselves in. I like a dystopia that can be preserved in formaldehyde, behind glass. Even the most intolerable atrocity can be tolerated if it's behind glass.

I suppose at some point I will add a list of previous exhibitions and the like, but honestly I'm finding this site is to be enough work as it is. I'm fairly hopeless when it comes to self-promotion, so just bear with me. I do sell my work - unless it's already been sold (t'would be unethical to do otherwise). LONDON – Pete Alonso threw a curveball.

Several minutes into his press conference Friday, Alonso began peppering local reporters about where to best locate the cuisines most associated with the city, including if he could find a traditional Sunday roast before Sunday.

This was the day after the Mets traveling group and their families had a huge welcome dinner aboard the Cutty Sark, which is now a museum, and Alonso and a few relievers drifted to a pub for what the first baseman colloquially regaled was “a proper pint of Guinness.” It also was not long after his dais mate for the press conference, Sean Manaea, had playfully sparred with a reporter if Hershey or Cadbury was the better chocolate and the Mets lefty was recommended to the snack Pickled Onion Monster Mush.

Not long after, out on the field, I joked to Alonso that he asked the best questions of the press conference and to stop messing with my job and he laughed and was about to answer, when he was pulled away by two former West Ham footballers, who Alonso would later throw batting practice to at London Stadium – which is usually the home of West Ham United.

And, well, you get the general idea. There was a lot of flavor added to this London Series event – or more aptly writing from here: flavour.

This is an event designed to sell the game to a larger audience. It is a chance for players to sneak in as close to a summer vacation as they get – for example, J.D. Martinez, who was part of the initial Red Sox-Yankees London Series in 2019, led a group of Mets to watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace. And it is a mixing of cultures as press conferences seemed to center as much on cricket as anything, notably MLB players being congratulated for the shocking U.S. victory Thursday over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.

But it is built around regular-season games between the Phillies and Mets on Saturday and Sunday. This ultimately is a business trip and the Mets are amid the business for the next 5-6 weeks of trying to play well enough to convince Steve Cohen and David Stearns to be buyers in the days leading up to the July 30 trade deadline.

“We are in a different county, but we are playing a good team and the games count,” Carlos Mendoza said.

In the real baseball world, the Mets feel as distant from the Phillies as New York to London – 16 1/2 games back of the NL’s best club. Yet at 27-35 and coming off a three-game sweep in the American capital before visiting the capital of the United Kingdom, the Mets went into their workout day just three out of the last wild card and with team officials still insisting baseball operations has not pivoted one way or the other yet for the trade deadline.

Instead, the attempts to upgrade internally continue. Brett Baty was brought across the pond to serve as the 27th man and told reporters that part of his Triple-A stay will be to play some second base. That is another shot at Jeff McNeil, who did not start any of the games against the Nationals and is expected to sit for a fourth straight with Philadelphia starting lefty Ranger Suarez on Saturday before he is likely back Sunday against former teammate Taijuan Walker. McNeil has yet to share public thoughts on his benching as he proved as capable of dodging reporters in Europe as back home.

Mendoza said Francisco Alvarez returned to Venezuela for a personal matter and if he is not able to return in time to play again on his rehab Sunday, he will not play until Tuesday and that will slow his calendar somewhat to rejoin the Mets. Thus, the battle between Tomas Nido and Luis Torrens for who sticks as Alvarez’s ultimate backup persists .

The Phillies lack such problems. The league, for example, is going to have difficulty limiting the number of Philadelphia All-Stars with so many deserving while figuring out which person should rep the Mets. The Mets’ offense has perked up of late, but the Phillies are averaging an NL-best 5.1 runs per game, though both teams should not expect the offensive orgy of 2019.

Mendoza, Martinez, Adam Ottavino and Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski were involved in the first London Series in which the Yankees swept two from the Red Sox in which 50 runs were scored in two games on 65 hits and 22 walks. In a stadium that took 18 days for MLB to transform, the alleys are five feet deeper than in 2019, center field seven feet deeper and the turf less pinball fast than it was then. There remains wide gulleys of foul territory and all the lack of familiarity that is part of a trip off MLB’s beaten path, despite all the info shared, for example, about how to best conquer jet lag.

Both teams seemed to embrace the spirit around these games and the business reality that will conclude Sunday, when the field will begin disassembly. The Foo Fighters are due to play here in two weeks. I wonder if Dave Grohl will be as open to discuss and partake in mushy peas as Alonso was.

Short-Term Rentals Haven’t Fully Caught On for Business Travel, but They’re Getting There

The uptake of vacation rentals for business travel depends on proving safety and reliability to road warriors and travel managers.

A number of travel management companies and corporations are starting to allow vacation rentals as accommodations, but there’s room for growth.

A recent Mastercard survey found 53% of those involved in coordinating travel say their companies allow them to book vacation rentals.

Sabre’s Global Distribution System lists over 400,000 accommodations beyond hotels. Sabre also manages corporate booking tool GetThere, meaning those going on business trips can stay in these properties.

“The interest from our agency partners on this segment has been increasing, and we have been selectively adding more supply in this category based on their needs,” a Sabre spokesperson wrote to Skift. “The booking volume compared to hotels is still low, but the growth is encouraging and is in the high double digits compared to the same timeframe last year.”

Corporate travel and technology company BizAway spotted a “noticeable trend of increasing preference for short-term rentals among travelers.” 

A desire for flexibility, which mostly started around the pandemic, has impacted office and corporate travel culture. Vacation rentals could help meet this growing demand as some travelers want to extend business trips or “work from anywhere,” said Chad Wallace, global head of commercial solutions at Mastercard. 

Skift Research surveyed over 50 business travelers who stayed in short-term rentals last year. 

Out of these guests, 58% said they are “very likely” to book another short-term rental in the next year.

The Potential Benefits: Convenience, Comfort, and Cost

Location and comfort for longer stays were the top two reasons travelers opted for a rental. 

“We see that extended stay-type hotels are really popular for travelers that are going to be staying in a location more than three or four days,” said Jamie Lane, chief economist at short-term rental analytics firm AirDNA. “And likewise, that’s why short-term rentals can be popular for business travelers. You can stock a fridge. You don’t have to have every meal out, that sort of thing — and also just having a desk.”

BizAway observed how, among its clients, retail chains sending employees to train staff at new stores have gravitated toward short-term rentals. Companies involved in machinery and construction installations do, as well, “due to the lengthy nature of their projects.”

Some short-term rentals may also be cheaper , another consideration for business travelers. 

“Now, travel managers are adjusting their policies to offer more flexible options to not only meet employee demands for more convenient travel options, but also establish cost efficiencies for the organization,” Wallace said. 

The Divide Between Companies and Travelers

While just over half of decision makers permit vacation rentals on business trips, there is a discrepancy. In that same Mastercard survey, namely 74% of corporate travelers claim their companies allow vacation rentals.

Lane guessed this discrepancy could stem from how some companies “explicitly allow” rentals, while other employers may not outline a clear policy. This data could reflect how many employees are “actually doing it.”

What’s in the Way

Safety, and being able to track employee whereabouts, is a priority.

“As it became more and more popular, companies came out with specific policies against it if they didn’t want it,” Lane said. “And a big part of the decision to not allow it was to not be able to track it.”

Companies use corporate booking tools to keep tabs on their travelers and ensure employee safety. This can prove useful during lockdowns and other events, according to Lane.

“Six in 10 companies also require travelers to comply with certain minimums: use of a booking tool, travel management company, payment card, or all three,” Wallace said. “These minimums allow companies to provide duty of care [encouraging health and safety] to travelers and control costs, allowing the expansion of vacation rental policies to coincide with duty of care responsibilities.”

A potential pitfall of some short-term rentals is reliability.

“If I’m going for a night, I’m staying in a hotel,” Lane said. Time is of the essence.

Business travelers need to know they will get a decent accommodation when booking a short-term rental.

“You’re on business — you’re in and out, you don’t have a second to spare, you can’t deal with a problem. So you need that reliability,” said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky in a recent interview with Skift.

This can deter travelers from considering rentals. There is more unpredictability, especially with individual hosts.

“There are some additional risks that go along with booking a short-term rental, especially through an individual host — that may not exist as much with if you’re booking through a larger property manager — of what is the quality and reliability that you’re going to get,” Lane said. 

Moving Forward

Chesky emphasized Airbnb’s shift toward “higher quality listings.”

“We have Guest Favorites, which have been hugely popular — two million [of] the best-loved listings,” Chesky said. “And I think the reason I bring this up is business travelers especially have a lower tolerance for error.”

With Airbnb as the most common choice for the surveyed business travelers, the company’s growing focus on reliability is essential.

“They’re sort of trying to call out and really build a brand within Airbnb of, ‘These are the listings that you can know are going to be reliable,’ in the same way that you consider a hotel room to be reliable and not a potential risk of booking for a shorter stay,” Lane said.

The future of rentals in corporate travel hinges on more widespread acceptance by travel managers and booking platforms.

This is something Mint House , a vacation rental and apartment company, still struggles with. At the Skift Short-Term Rental Summit on Wednesday, Mint House CEO Christian Lee explained how the company engages corporate travelers.

While Mint House can stock groceries and partner with local amenities to give guests an elevated experience, Lee said travel managers still need a bit of convincing. He described the back and forth as a “hand-to-hand combat exercise.” Lee hopes legacy systems, in particular, can harness technology to ease the traveler experience going forward.

Sabre is one platform that believes it can expand these offerings even more.

“We have the ability to add more of this inventory type,” the Sabre spokesperson said. “We will be driven by the needs of our travel agency partners, which includes solving for some of the duty of care requirements.”

Ohio man plans to take a 2-person submersible to Titanic depths to show the industry is safe after the OceanGate tragedy

• A submersible imploded last year as it descended to view the wreck of the Titanic.
• All five passengers on board the OceanGate vessel were killed.
• Two men are now planning a trip in a new submersible to try to prove the industry is safe.

An Ohio real-estate investor is planning to take a two-person submersible down to Titanic-level depths to prove that the journey can be carried out safely following the Titan sub's implosion last year .

The investor, Larry Connor, told The Wall Street Journal : "I want to show people worldwide that while the ocean is extremely powerful, it can be wonderful and enjoyable and really kind of life-changing if you go about it the right way."

He's working with Patrick Lahey, a cofounder and the CEO of the submersible manufacturer Triton Submarines.

They aim to show that such an expedition can be carried out repeatedly and safely despite the implosion of the OceanGate sub in June, which killed all five people on board, including the company's CEO, Stockton Rush.

Lahey said that Connor called him a few days after the implosion and said: "'You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption.'"

Connor, who has been to the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench on Earth, said they planned to do the journey in a two-person vessel called the Triton 4000/2 Abyssal Explorer, named "4000" for the depth in meters it can reach. He did not say when the trip would take place.

Lahey was one of the many industry figures who criticized OceanGate before and after the disaster, accusing it of questionable safety standards.

After the implosion, he described Rush's approach to persuading people to get on board as "quite predatory."

Others in the industry and the company also voiced their concerns.

A former chief submersible pilot for the company said years before the fatal trip that he was worried Rush would get himself and others killed in a "quest to boost his ego."

The filmmaker and Titanic explorer James Cameron also weighed in, saying he and some engineers had told OceanGate officials that using the Titan could lead to "catastrophic failure."

The waiver that Titan passengers were required to sign mentioned multiple ways that passengers could die and described the vessel as "experimental" three times.

Previous passengers had also described errors, failed trips, and feeling unsafe.

CBS News' David Pogue said his trip on the submersible was canceled after the Titan reached 37 feet because of an equipment malfunction, while one diver who made it to the wreckage said there were multiple aborted attempts, calling it a "suicide mission."

Nevertheless, Rush and his company repeatedly defended the submersible and its design.

The subsequent disaster raised concerns, with some experts calling on the industry to reassess taking people to such a remote location .

But Lahey said he believed that OceanGate's problems weren't reflective of the wider industry, adding that classed submersibles were considered very safe because of the extensive testing they undergo.

Rob McCallum — a former OceanGate consultant who had warned Rush about the safety of the Titan — agreed with that assessment.

"In that sense, OceanGate didn't make the industry look bad," McCallum told the Journal. "It made us look good."
