Sharing is caring!

If you’re looking for one of the best summer road trips in North America, look no further than a leisurely exploration of New York state and Canada! You’ll enjoy beautiful places, wonderful food and varied cultures and more as you go through this ~two week summer trip.

In this Canada and New York road trip guide, I’ll show you how to put the puzzle pieces together to plan your own incredible adventure.

Quick Overview

Days 1-4: Finger Lakes Days 5-6: Thousand Islands Days 7-10: Quebec City Days 11-12: Montreal Days 13-14: Prince Edward County Days 15-16: Toronto Days 17-18: Niagara Falls

You can use this itinerary as a general guide, but feel free to modify it to suit your needs. It would be easy to expand this to a three week summer road trip itinerary by adding time in Montreal and Toronto, though harder to cut it down to exactly two weeks.

If you’re pressed for time, consider starting with Day 7 by flying into Quebec City and then flying out of Syracuse or Rochester after spending a few days in the Finger Lakes. While you’d miss Thousand Islands, you’d also save yourself more than 6 hours of driving.

Of course you can always reverse the order of this Canada & New York road trip itinerary if it’s more convenient for you.

New York State + Canada Road Trip Logistics

canada road trip from nyc

Our family did almost exactly this itinerary, departing from our home in Columbus Ohio. It’s a loop, so you can begin pretty much anywhere. For those who live outside of the area, you’ll want to price out flights to Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse on the US side and Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City on the Canadian side.

If you’re American and planning for a summer road trip with kids, know that your children do need a passport if flying to Canada. However, if you fly in and out of New York state your children can cross the border with only a birth certificate. If your kids don’t already have passports, be sure to factor in the costs ($135 for standard/$215 for expedited processing+delivery) and lead time (6-13 weeks) required as you decide where to begin.

The other option to consider is whether you want to fly roundtrip in and out of a single airport or if it makes more sense for you to book either an open-jaw (in/out of different cities) or even two one-way tickets. Why might you want to do that? Maybe one of the destinations isn’t interesting to you, or you can get a better deal or save time by skipping a connecting drive. One example might be flying into Buffalo and out or Toronto – you won’t miss anything except an hour or two of traffic. Be sure to factor in one-way drop fees on your rental car if you do this!

Time to get into the details of our New York & Canada road trip itinerary!

4 Days in Finger Lakes, New York

canada road trip from nyc

The Finger Lakes region of western New York is the perfect place to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with what you really love. It has something for everyone: eleven beautiful lakes, hundreds (or even thousands) of waterfalls of all sizes, wineries, museums, historic sites, cute towns and more. Check out my reel to see how much fun you can cram in!

canada road trip from nyc

Things to do in Finger Lakes

In my complete guide to Finger Lakes with kids you’ll find plenty of inspiration for your own trip, but there are a few things you have to do when you visit this area:

  • Explore waterfalls – It’s hard to beat Watkins Glen , but if accessibility is important put Taughannock Falls near Ithaca on your list! Our favorite waterfall in the Finger Lakes is Letchworth State Park, which you’d want to visit as you enter the region from the west.
  • Corning Museum of Glass – You’ll be blown away but the world’s largest collection of art glass, and don’t miss the excellent demonstrations and workshops to make your own glass souveniers!
  • Lake life – Whether you kayak, go on a tour boat or just enjoy splashing in one of the lakes you can’t miss getting out on the water.

Where to stay in the Finger Lakes

  • Best Western Plus Vineyard Inn & Suites
  • Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel
  • Seneca Lake Effect
  • Merlot Bungalow

2 Days in Thousand Islands

canada road trip from nyc

You’ll make the easy 3 hour drive from Finger Lakes to Thousand Islands today, landing you on the US side of the St. Lawrence River. If you get an early start, stop at Green Lake near Syracuse or Fort Ontario in Oswego (only open select days) along the way depending on your interests.

1000 Islands is even quieter than the Finger Lakes and many of its visitors stay for the full summer in vacation homes, so its infrastructure isn’t geared as much to those planning a brief stay. But it has one can’t-miss attraction for your full day in the area: Boldt Castle . The restoration of this incredible American castle is second to none, so be sure to book a Boldt Castle and Two Nation Tour .

canada road trip from nyc

The boat will take you up and down the St. Lawrence River’s Millionaires Row past some of the most spectacular homes in the US and Canada before you bringing you to Heart Island, home of Boldt Castle. You’ll explore Heart Island on your own with the excellent audioguide app – I recommend bringing headphones and a splitter if you want to share, as it’s extremely informative! I recommend taking the earlier tour boat so that you have plenty of time to explore the island.

When your boat returns, cross the bridge to picture-perfect Wellesley Island where “summer” is a verb. Hit up Wellesley Hotel & Restaurant for dinner and then stroll through Thousand Islands Park as you watch the sun set.

Things to do in Thousand Islands

  • Boldt Castle and Two Nation Tour
  • Wellesley Island for dinner and sunset

Where to stay in Thousand Islands

We based ourselves in Alexandria Bay, but in retrospect I wish we had stayed in nearby Clayton. It’s cuter and has higher quality food options. The dining and atmosphere in A-Bay were somewhat disappointing.

  • Top vacation rentals in Clayton, NY
  • 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel

4 Days in Quebec City

canada road trip from nyc

The furthest destination on this road trip is a truly special one, Quebec City. It has maintained its distinctive French-Canadian culture over the centuries and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into 17th century France rather than a modern North American city. On day 7, you’ll be spending 5-6 hours driving so you’ll arrive in the evening.

canada road trip from nyc

Things to do in Quebec City

There are so many incredible activities that I’ve put together a detailed guide to help you plan your day-by-day Quebec City itinerary . Here are a few highlights to be sure you include:

  • Quebec history walking tour
  • Citadelle de Québec tour
  • Montmorency Falls
  • Saint-Louis Forts and Châteaux National Historic Site
  • Musée de la Civilisation
  • Whale watching tour

You may notice that some of the suggestions on that list aren’t in Quebec City. That’s because there are so many wonderful day trips from Quebec that will show you a completely different side of the province!

Where to stay in Quebec City

  • Save: Hôtel Manoir Vieux-Québec
  • Splurge: Fairmont Le Château Frontenac

2 Days in Montreal

canada road trip from nyc

Get an early start on day 11 to head down to Montreal, one of the coolest places in Canada (at least in my personal opinion). The drive is an easy 2.5 hours so you’ll have most of the day to explore Montreal in addition to all of day 12 and the morning of day 13 if you want it!

Spend the afternoon when you arrive strolling the city, enjoying St. Catherine Street, the Old Port and more. If you have kids with you, consider visiting the excellent Montreal Science Center – free if you’re a member of a local ASTC museum.

Evening is a perfect time to explore the cobbled streets of old Montreal, which was founded in 1642.

canada road trip from nyc

The next morning kick off your day with an Old Montreal walking tour – you can choose between three different options depending on which sites are most interesting to you and how much time you have. At mid-day, head to Marché Jean Talon to load up your bags with incredible breads, produce, local cheeses and more to bring to Mount Royal Park for a picnic. While you’re there you can enjoy amazing city views, take a hike or row a boat around Beaver Lake.

You can also consider taking a Montreal food & drink tour in the evening. Montreal’s food scene is amazing and brings in traditions from all around the world. There are tons of options for Montreal food tours !

For your final half-day in Montreal (Day 13 if you’re keeping track), visit the excellent Éspace Pour La Vie . It’s home to the Biodôme, Botanical Gardens and Insectarium. It’s located on the site of the former Olympic campus. Rather than leaving the site to waste, it’s been transformed into an incredible place to explore the natural world. If you have time, I’ve heard that the planetarium is well worth visiting – be sure to check the English schedule in advance, as show times are limited.

canada road trip from nyc

Things to do in Montreal

  • Shopping on St. Catherine Street
  • Stroll the Old Port
  • Old Montreal walking tour
  • Montreal food & drink tour

  • Hotel Place D’Armes

2 Days in Price Edward County

canada road trip from nyc

Around mid-day on Day 13, hop back in the car and keep driving south until you reach lovely rural Prince Edward County – locally referred to simply as “The County”. PEC is known for lovely beaches and high-quality agriculture.

In the town of Picton, Ontario you’ll find plenty of tasty restaurants and small shops. Don’t miss Bocado for excellent Spanish food!

For activities, spend Day 14 hopping between the beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park and the numerous wineries and cideries scattered around the County.

  • Stroll through Picton’s stores and enjoy its restaurants
  • Hit the beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park
  • Go wine and cider tasting

2 Days in Toronto

canada road trip from nyc

On Day 15 you’ll drive the easy 2.5 hours to Toronto, though be warned that the drive time can creep up during high traffic times.

Torontonians may be offended that I’ve only given their incredible city a day or maybe a day and a half. It’s not because I dislike the city or there aren’t enough things to do in Toronto. But the reality is that it has a big city vibe that will feel familiar to visitors who have spent time in places like New York and Chicago without some of the unique cultural aspects of Montreal and Quebec, and it’s also simply easier to access than everything else on this road trip thanks to its robust international airport.

canada road trip from nyc

Things to do in Toronto

Since your time in Toronto is limited, you’ll have to pick and choose how to spend your visit. I’ve put together a detailed play-by-play Toronto one day itinerary to help you maximize your experience.

If you’d rather build out your own itinerary, be sure to include some of the following in your ~day and a half in Toronto:

  • Eat as much Asian food as you can – 30% of the city’s residents are Asian immigrants representing all of the continent’s nations, so you’ll find plenty of great options
  • Ride up the CN Tower at sunset
  • Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada
  • Visit the Hockey Hall of Fame
  • Enjoy the views and architecture of Casa Loma

2 Days in Niagara Falls

canada road trip from nyc

Day 17 is the home stretch! In the morning you’ll drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls – but stay on the Canadian side. It has better views than the American side, plus plenty of unique attractions to keep you busy. Just be sure not to make these Niagara Falls mistakes during your visit. You’ll get to enjoy the best of Niagara Falls on the afternoon of Day 17 and the first half

What to Pack for a New York & Canada Road Trip

There are a few things you’ll definitely want to pack for a summer road trip in New York and Canada. We brought these and found them very helpful!

  • A paper map – Some of these areas, particularly Finger Lakes, don’t have great phone service because they’re remote and mountainous. I suggest downloading maps to use offline in the Google Maps app, but also bringing this paper map as backup. You may also want to grab a Quebec driving map and an Ontario driving map though we didn’t need them.
  • A cooler – This route covers about 1,000 miles so there are plenty of days when you’ll wind up driving around mealtime! We were really happy to have this adorable (and effective) cooler and these serious ice packs (2 of the XL size) with us for picnic lunches, quick hotel breakfasts and snack breaks. Everything stayed cold when we needed it to and the cooler has enough organization to consolidate paper plates, utensils, paper towels and even a bottle opener.
  • Summer clothing (mostly) – We were able to get away with almost exclusively summer clothes – you can see that I wore the same two dresses many times in the photos above! In addition, we each brought one pair of jeans, one pair of hiking pants, a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece or sweatshirt. Thankfully it’s a pretty easy trip to pack light for.

After over a year of border restrictions, Canada is now allowing fully vaccinated Americans to visit —and a U.S. to Canada road trip is a great way to take advantage, while also avoiding the often-crowded airport experience. For travelers looking to head north of the border this summer in the privacy of their own car, these are nine scenic routes that we love, with tips on where to stay, eat, and more. The best part? Each of these Canada road trip itineraries has starting points in the U.S., so you can enjoy every bit of the drive.

Niagara Falls Ontario

Ontario's Niagara Horseshoe Falls

Niagara Parkway: Buffalo, New York to Toronto, Ontario

Just across the border from Buffalo, New York, lies the city of Niagara Falls , best known for being the home of the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. For those looking to extend their trip, travel along the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), which will take you from Niagara to downtown Toronto in 90 minutes (if traffic is flowing smoothly).

Where to stop:  Follow the Niagara parkway to the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, where you'll spot preserved 19th-century colonial architecture. The Niagara region is also known for having dozens of wineries on the Niagara Wine Trail , and some are as close as 10 minutes to the border.

Where to eat:  The family-run  Ravine Vineyard Estate  has an on-site restaurant and general store-style gift shop offering a la carte selections, and pantry picnic essentials to stock up on between wine tastings.

Where to stay:  Charming Niagara-on-the-Lake has several landmark properties like the  Harbour House Hotel and Prince of Wales Hotel . If your road trip takes you to Toronto, continue your trip back in time by staying at One King West Hotel & Residence , inside Toronto’s original Dominion Bank skyscraper, which dates back to 1914.

Banff National Park Canada

Lake Louise, Banff

Icefields Parkway: Montana to Banff National Park, Alberta

The quickest way from the American border to Banff National Park in Alberta is to drive through British Columbia. From northern Montana, head north on the BC-93 highway driving through the small towns along the way. The Icefields Parkway links Lake Louise in Banff National Park to Jasper National Park , and whirls drivers through the Rocky Mountains, beside glacier-like icefields and along the Continental Divide.

Where to stop:  On your way to Banff National Park you'll pass though several mountain towns brimming with outdoor activities, like skiing and waterfalls to visit; Cranbrook, Fernie, and Kimberly are all just off the BC-93 and worth pulling over for. Stop by the village of Radium Hot Springs , which is open to visitors year-round, for a dip in the Lussier Natural Hot Springs, or one of their thermal pools.

Where to eat:  During your drive on the Icefields Parkway, dine beside the Columbia Ice Field at the  Glacier View Lodge . From the on-site Altitude Restaurant you’ll have spectacular dinner views of the mountains, or you can visit the more-casual Chalet for lunch fare.

Where to stay:  Known as the “Castle in the Rockies,” the Fairmont Banff Springs was built as one of the original Canadian Pacific Railway hotels in 1886. Today, Fairmont also operates other historic properties in the region that include the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge .

Fundy Coastal Drive New Brunswick

Mulholland Lighthouse, Campobello Island

Fundy Coastal Trail: Maine to Saint John, New Brunswick

Explore New Brunswick's 286-mile drive along the Bay of Fundy coastline to see the world’s highest tides up-close. Depending on the time of day, you can marvel at the tides two ways: by kayaking on the water when it's at its peak, or by walking on the sprawling ocean floor when the waves have recessed. The Bay of Fundy can be seen from Saint John to Moncton, or plan a visit to the otherworldly Hopewell Rocks , which were formed by tidal erosions and stand alone when the tide goes out.

For a short visit, wander down the town's main strip and along its historic pier; if you have some more time, wander through the 27-acre  Kingsbrae Garden  or play 18 holes at the award-winning  Algonquin Golf Course .

Where to eat:  Dine at the  Saint John City Market , where you'll find locally caught seafood and other seasonal goods. For a sit-down meal, stop by  Bigtide Brewing Company  for craft beer and pub fare.

Where to stay:  In downtown Saint John, the  Delta Hotel by Marriott Saint John  is conveniently within walking distance to the city’s best attractions and its famed  reversing falls , which appear to swirl backwards into the Bay of Fundy. For the resort experience, book a night at  The Algonquin in St. Andrews  by the sea.

Sea to Sky Highway British Columbia

British Columbia's Highway 99

Sea to Sky Highway: Washington State to Whistler, British Columbia

You can drive from the edge of Washington state to the mountains in Whistler in just over two hours, cutting through vibrant Vancouver along the way. The Sea-to-Sky Highway, also known as the BC-99, connects North Vancouver to Whistler on a picturesque coastal drive where the mountain and the water meet. Where to stop: To break up your drive, stop in Squamish at the Sea to Sky Gondola to get an aerial view of the region. If time permits, enhance your visit with a free guided tour to learn about the history of the land on the Spirit Trail .  Where to eat: Head to the Nicklaus North Golf Course to try and snag a spot on the patio at Table Nineteen for scenic views of Green Lake, and the descending floatplanes flying in from Vancouver.  Where to stay: Book a few nights in Whistler to explore this bustling mountain town. Budget-travelers flock to the boutique capsule Pangea Pod Hotel , located in the center of the main strip. For a lakeside respite, the Nita Lake Lodge is a stone’s throw away in Creekside Village.

Quebec City's Old Town

Autoroute 73: Maine to Quebec City, Quebec

While several of the New England states border Québec, the capital city of Québec City is in the Eastern part of the province, closest to Maine. This Francophone city feels more like Europe than other areas of Canada, with narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets. Continue your road trip along the St. Lawrence River to scenic Baie-Saint Paul in Charlevoix for country walks, cheese shops, and the Galerie d'art Iris .  Where to stop: Mark the Montmorency Falls on your map for a quick stop just outside of Québec City, on your way to Charlevoix. The magnificent falls tower 99 feet higher than Niagara Falls and adventurous travelers can explore them by cable car, a suspended bridge , or zip-line. Where to eat: Stop by the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac for an afternoon tea at the castle, or dine onsite at Champlain Restaurant or Sam Bistro.  Where to stay: Auberge Saint-Antoine in the Old Port of Quebec City is a Relais & Châteaux that has preserved relics from the archeological dig within the property. In Baie-Saint Paul, the Hôtel & Spa Le Germain Charlevoix blends a peaceful escape in a charming town with sophisticated amenities and an onsite Spa Nordique Le Germain.

The Southwest Nova Scotia Route: Bar Harbor, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia

When the  CAT ferry  that travels between Bar Harbor, Maine , and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, resumes in spring 2022, you can get from coast to coast on this high-speed catamaran in just over three hours. RVs, pickups, SUVs, cars, tour buses, motorcycles, and bicycles are welcome aboard—making this the best way for road trippers to cross the Atlantic Ocean into Canada. Once in Nova Scotia, drive along the jaw-dropping coastline along the 101 to Halifax, and back down the 103 to the ferry in Yarmouth.

Where to stop:  Plan to make several stops during your road trip, in the small coastal towns of Digby, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay. After Halifax, head to Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse to visit one of the most recognizable sites in Canada.

Where to eat:  A trip to Nova Scotia isn’t complete with indulging in fresh seafood. Swing by one of the stalls at  Halifax Seaport Farmer’s Market , or grab a lobster roll along the water’s edge in one of the small towns that you visit along the way.

Where to stay:  Break up your drive by staying a night or two in downtown Halifax. For a touch of history, book your stay at the  Lord Nelson Hotel and Suites  by the Halifax Public Gardens. For a contemporary option, check out  Muir, Autograph Collection Hotel –slated to open in fall 2021 .

The Alaskan Highway Yukon

Emerald Lake, South Klondike Highway

Alaska-Canadian Highway: Alaska to Haines Junction, Yukon

The 1390-mile route along the Alaska-Canadian Highway takes you through the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to British Columbia, and then into Alaska and the Yukon. For a shorter jaunt, take just the northern leg along the St. Elias Mountains and Kluane National Park and Reserve, traveling north from Alaska through Haines Junction. Where to stop: At the Thechàl Dhâl Visitor Centre , you can pick up hiking maps, register for backcountry camping, and learn more about Kluane National Park and Reserve. During the spring and fall, Dall Sheep can often be seen nearby. This national park is home to Canada’s highest mountain, Mt. Logan, the largest non-polar ice fields on the planet, and is part of one the largest internationally protected areas connected to Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park in British Columbia, and Glacier Bay National Park and Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park in Alaska.

Where to eat: There are several dining options in Haines Junction, but due to the secluded nature of this region you’ll want to pack a few snacks in a bear-proof container to bring on your drive. Rely on on-site dining options during your hotel stay, and healthy breakfasts and hearty family-style dinners at the Mount Logan EcoLodge .  Where to stay: The  Mount Logan EcoLodge  is a rustic escape tucked within the mountains, in a prime location for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis during the winter months.

For the closest crossing to Grasslands National Park , head north along the 191 in Montana crossing the border in Morgan. Where to stop: Visit the wide-open plains of Grasslands National Park on your way from the U.S.-Canada border toward Highway 13. This national park is one of the largest Dark Sky Preserves in Canada, making it the perfect place to stargaze during your overnight stay.  Where to eat: Stop by  Harvest Eatery  in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan, located along the Red Coat Trail. Their extensive globally inspired menu serves farm-fresh salads, family-style mains, and a kid’s menu to accommodate young travelers.  Where to stay: Stay within Grasslands National Park in a Parks Canada oTENTik . The Ultimate 2 Weeks Road Trip from NYC Through the East Coast to Canada

I'm traveling with a friend and it's our dream to visit New England and Canada . We love small towns instead of big cities. What do you think about this itinerary: NY (2 days because we have been there twice) Newport (1 day) Provincetown - Cape Code (2 days) Portland - Coast of Main - Bar Harbour (4 days) Quebec (2 days) Montreal (2 days) and the last day we want to spend a complete day shopping so we are thinking going to Woodbury Common in Central Valley and then back to NY. Somewhere worth visiting between Montreal and Central Valley? Our travel starts and finishes in NY and we would like to rent a car. We are not visiting Boston, because we have been there. Any suggestions about the itinerary? We will be traveling on September or October. Which month do you think is better? I have heard that October is beautiful because of the color of the trees. Thanks a lot for your guidance!!!

The road trip itinerary:

Day 2 newport, day 3 newport.

Your day in Newport RI should is going to be great! The downtown area is perfect. There are shops everywhere and plenty of restaurants. For lunch, I would suggest the Black Pearl for a bowl of clam chowder (it is the absolute best), a little shopping for the afternoon, maybe some ice cream. If you want to see a beautiful sunset, I suggest the Hyatt Regency Newport on Goat Island . You don't stay there for the night, you go to the restaurant in the back and they have a sunset ceremony with champagne and a little canon every night. They have a fire pit, a little lighthouse, and the Newport Bridge is near. It will be warmer in September, but if you're looking for the leaves changing color I clearly suggest October. You will love to go and take the scenic route up through Franconia Notch where you'll pass the Presidential mountains, the spot where the Old Man Of The Mountain used to spend his days, and see all of the beautiful colors on the trees.

Day 4 Provincetown

Day 5 nantucket and portland.

Check out ice cream at The Juice Bar but go at off hours to avoid the lines. 10b, also known as Ladies Beach, is a great place to find some waves. American Seasons is delicious for dinner, and I would highly recommend it. Renting a bike is not a bad idea because Nantucket is a beautiful place to ride around!

Day 6 Portland and Bar Harbor

The real beauty in the Portland area is outside of Portland though. Two must visits: Two Lights State Park . Bear right to the park when you arrive, not left toward the lighthouse. Park and head toward the water on the right. It's simply gorgeous. And Fort Williams Park , home of the most photographed lighthouse in the world! And take a look at Freeport when you're driving up the coast of Maine . L.L.Bean mothership store is there and it's a great shopping town.

Day 7 Bar Harbor

I have stayed in several places in Bar Harbor they are...Edenbrook Motel, Acadia Inn, The Days Inn Bar Harbor/Frenchman's Bay and Isleview Motel and Cottages. In the summer there is a shuttle bus called the Island Explorer that picks up visitors at many of the motels and will take you to downtown Bar Harbor or Acadia National Park. The motels a few minutes out of Bar Harbor are cheaper but the shuttle can take you where you need to go. I'd check with the motel to see if they use the shuttle. The rides are free. I hope this helps. If I can be of any more help let me know.

Day 8 Bar Harbor

Day 9 quebec city.

Stayed at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Honestly, we signed up for the Fairmont credit card and, after $2,000 spent over three months, received President's Club status. We received two free nights at any Fairmont in the world. We stayed three nights and paid for one. With our status, they upgraded us to the gold floor. Tony Bourdain was spot on with his recommendation to L'Affaire est Ketchup. Outstanding! We also had a great lunch at La Galette Libanaise. Must see would be the La Citadelle de Québec, the farmer's market, and a stroll on Rue Saint Louis out to Grande Allée. Kind of a mini Champs Elysee. They also have some decent street performers, most of which take their turn around the statue of Samuel de Champlain.
The problem would be, would you have enough time. There is so much to see in Quebec City. You cannot mist the Vieux-Québec (old city). You will have lost of choices at all ranges of $$. Leave you usual fast food chains aside. Live a little experience good food and historical landscapes. Try one of the nice restaurant in the steps going from the Vieux-Québec to the Basse-Ville (original site of the city during colonisation). Another street with lots of good choices is Rue Cartier. If you don't have a place to stay yet, try Relais Charles-Alexandre ( go on Internet for there site) on Grande-Allée E near Rue Cartier. It several transformed joined buildings into a Inn, with cackeling floors, breakfast included. Very nice ! I used to go there frequently for work. It's within walking distance of Vieux-Québec.

Day 10 Quebec City

Day 11 montreal.

Essential in Montreal: Vieux-Montreal, Mont-Royal to get the city view, Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal, Olympic Stadium, Jardin Botanique (those two are close), Saint-Laurent, St Denis St and Mont Royal Blvd (lots of restaurants, bars and stores). Two smaller hidden streets which have great restaurants: Rue Prince Arthur and Rue Duluth. Other options: Casino de Montréal, Chinatown, Place des arts, Underground City (which is basically stores).

Additionally, if you are from a country that requires a visa to enter Canada, ensure that you have obtained the appropriate visa before your trip.

Note: If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not need a visa to enter Canada, but having a valid passport is still mandatory.

Using Parking Garages and Meters

The maximum speed limit on most city streets is 50 km/h (31 mph), unless otherwise posted. Adhering to these speed limits and following the rules of the road will help ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience in Montreal.

Tips on crossing the US/Canada border

As you’ll be crossing two countries, avoid a visa blunder and make sure to check the independent visa restrictions for both the US and Canada. The US has a reputation for stricter conditions but their Visa Waiver Program is available for most Europeans who wish to stay for up to 90 days. You’ll undergo a separate visa and passport check when you make a border crossing into Canada where you will similarly require an Electronic Travel Authorisation from the Canadian government to enter. For the chillest border crossing possible, be ready to answer questions about your travel purpose and length of stay. Possession of alcohol, tobacco and firearms will be monitored, so save your trip to the liquor store until after crossing.

Bear in mind that major highway crossings tend to be busier than smaller highway and truck routes, meaning that a small detour can save you potential hours queuing in traffic. The Canadian Border Services Agency’s Twitter feed can provide up-to-date information on border waits and opening times, or check here . Those wanting to cross in style should consider investing in a NEXUS card which gives pre-approval for travellers who pay $50 for a five-year card and take an interview with US and Canadian officials at the NEXUS enrolment centre.

Don’t get caught out speeding down the freeway on the other side without first getting to grips with Canada’s metric system. You’ll see speed limits written in kilometres, not miles so check closely on your speedometer for the conversion, or otherwise, check online before heading out.

New York to Quebec City – Itinerary

After a hectic few days pounding the asphalt in NYC, begin the epic journey towards Montreal at any pace you choose. The direct journey will be a six to seven-hour drive northwards on I-87 North Highway. (FYI, as well as being a great destination road trip from New York, Montreal is also a 455-mile leg from Philly, 308 miles from Boston and 260 miles from Portland and Maine).

Opt for the scenic route towards Montreal and take a brief interlude at Niagara Falls. The falls are also seven hours from New York, but instead, we take the I-80 West, I-81 North or I-90 West. From there, travellers have the added option of driving to Toronto (1.5 hours via the Queen Elizabeth Way) before making their way to Montreal (5 hours via ON-401 East) and concluding in Quebec City (2.5 hours via Route Transcanadienne / Autoroute 20 East).

A foodie’s last stand, Toronto honours Canada’s indigenous heritage while embracing diversity, with an exciting range of fusion and authentic global cuisine. Whether you’ve come straight from the border or taken a sojourn in Toronto, Montreal will feel like a whole world away. Distinctly Canadian yet licked with French heritage, Montreal features European-style avenues side by side with chaotic Chinatown alleyways and, of course, an internationally contending Gay Village. The second-largest city in Canada, Montreal is also the world’s second-largest French-speaking city, although – unlike Paris – English is widely spoken.

Either way, brush up on your Français and you won’t regret it. A little effort goes a long way and a few words in French can quickly make you a local friend or two. Montreal to Quebec City drive

Take your sweet time on the next leg which will take you from Montreal to Quebec City through rural Canada at its most mesmerising, dotted as it is with quaint towns, local wineries and boutique districts. More slow-paced than its opposing urban ends, Quebec province allows visitors to return to nature, rekindling an appreciation for the simple things such as moseying through forests, indulging in farm-to-table fare and exploring the provincial sites of a gone-by era alongside a friendly diverse community.

The wider Quebec province encompasses the majority of Canada’s northeast, flanking Ontario in the west and rugged Newfoundland in the east. Feel free to venture further north for hiking excursions and picturesque drives, but for now, we stick to the more populated areas, following the St Lawrence River east to where Quebec City sits spoiled with stunning backdrops including Montmorency Falls, the Jacques-Cartier National Park and a variety of idyllic isles just moments from the centre.

Quebec city

Unique across North America for its colonial fortifications, QC is an intriguing endpoint for our NYC to Quebec City road trip, where historical sites and cobbled streets provide the backdrop for a packed cultural calendar and lively night-time escapades. Of the many things to do in Quebec City, be sure to take a romantic walk and soak up the city’s Nouvelle-France architecture before winding up in the Saint-Jean-Baptiste neighbourhood, where the city’s queer centre lies on Rue Saint-Jean. Despite lacking an official gay village, Quebec City is as liberal as they come, being one of the first jurisdictions in the world to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. The energy, passion and inclusivity in this city are clear – your rainbow flags and excessive PDA won’t even raise an eyebrow. While the use of English is pervasive in Quebec, attempting a greeting in French will again win you much favour with the locals… Essayez-le aujourd’hui!

Do you want to visit Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto, or all of the above? Make a list of must-see destinations, and plan your route accordingly. You can use Google Maps to estimate the driving time and distance between each stop.

Next, decide on the duration of your trip. Do you want a quick getaway for a long weekend, or a more extensive journey over multiple weeks? Keep in mind that the more destinations you visit, the longer your trip will be.

Once you have your route and duration planned, it's time to think about accommodations. Will you be camping, staying in hotels, or a mix of both? Make sure to book your accommodations in advance, especially during peak travel season.

Finally, don't forget to pack appropriately for your road trip. Bring comfortable clothing and shoes, snacks and drinks for the car, and any necessary travel documents such as passports or visas if you plan on crossing the border into Canada.

New York to Montreal Road Trip: Where Past Meets Present

Whether exploring the Great Camps of the Adirondacks, cheering on your horse at Saratoga Springs or biking amongst the outdoor exhibits of a forward-thinking art center in Hudson Valley, this New York to Montreal road trip balances the glamor of an era gone by with the area’s forward-thinking, contemporary heart.

The Catskills and Hudson Valley

Days 1 & 2

Leave New York City behind as you venture into the bucolic Hudson Valley just a few hours drive north of the big city. Thanks to generations of artists escaping the city to find inspiration in nature upstate, Hudson Valley is awash with trendy boutiques, fantastic restaurants and acclaimed art institutions.

Indulge in a farmer-led visit and lunch at the renowned Stone Barns Center for Food & Agriculture, then stop by Storm King Arts Center to explore this leading open-air museum by bike. At the end of the day, rest your head at Troutbeck – a beautiful 250-acre estate that has hosted naturalists, poets and other romantics of the likes of Emerson and Hemingway.

On your second day, Troutbeck has a myriad of activities to immerse you in the surrounding forests and valleys that have long inspired its visitors. Whether you’re interested in hiking, a guided fly-fishing experience or meditation, there’s something for everyone.

Saratoga Springs

Day 3 & 4

Continue to step back in time as you venture further upstate. First, you’ll stop by Olana Estate, home to one of the major figures in the Hudson River School of landscape painting, for a private tour through the historic building and sweeping grounds. Then it’s onward to Saratoga Springs , where you’ll enjoy the nostalgic glamor of thoroughbred horse races. We’ll arrange your VIP box seats at the track with a private paddock pass and access to the winner’s circle. Don your race day best (don’t forget your hat!) and hope the odds are in your favor.

The Point in the Adirondacks

Continuing north, you’ll drive a few hours to enter the Adirondacks. This wild landscape sprawls across over 6.1 million acres of beautifully rugged mountains, lakes and natural beauty. Soak in your beautiful surroundings with cocktails from the epic vantage point of the Lake Placid Olympic Ski Jump.

Enjoy the best of this beautiful wilderness from the comfort of The Point , a secluded luxury property on Saranac Lake. The Point is a true vestige of the past and a member of the elite ranks of the “Adirondack Great Camps.” In the early 19th century, Gilded Age magnates– such as the Vanderbilts and Guggenheims– built idyllic log mansions along the lakeshores of upstate New York as much-needed escapes back into nature. The Point, built by a member of the Rockefeller clan, is the paragon of this Great Camps era and continues to promise the offer of peace and natural beauty to this day.

During your luxurious stay at The Point, unwind without the distraction of television and with the serenity of the lake and forest at all sides. Twice a week you’ll have the opportunity to dress up in formal attire and join an elegant seven-course meal, in the glamorous style of the Rockefeller’s Great Camps of old. During the day, participate in as many (or as few!) activities as you choose– from waterskiing, fishing and paddle-boarding on the lake to hiking, tennis or croquet amongst the trees.

Finish off your journey by crossing the Canadian border into Montreal, the cosmopolitan heart of Quebec. This city is a convergence of the Old and the New World, the French and English language, exciting new ideas and centuries of history. Your accommodation at the Hotel William Gray mirrors the dichotomy of the city itself with its unique blend of modern design and historic architecture.

Walk the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal with a local historian and peel back the layers of time as you discover the city’s journey from a 17th century fur-trapping town to the multicultural hub it is today. Alternatively, get a taste of Montreal’s multicultural influences on a food tour of North America’s largest open air market with a local chef.

Time to head home! You can fly from Montreal or choose to make the long haul driving back to New York City (6 hrs).

View this photo on Instagram

What to see: The Catskills are filled with so many different natural wonders to kick-start your trip. Give yourself a break from the road and go explore some nature. You'll find sweeping panoramic views from overlooks at Hoopole Mountain, hidden waterfalls like the Vernooy Kill Falls, and more.

Distance and parking: Sundown Wild Forest is about 103 miles outside of New York City. We recommend parking your RV in the lower field parking lot .

2. Cool off at Peekamoose Blue Hole.

Why go: Tucked inside the Catskills in the Sundown Wild Forest is a beautiful, inviting oasis. Peekamoose Blue Hole is the perfect place to cool off during the summer or reflect during colder months. Just make sure you clean up after yourself when visiting.

Distance and parking: Keep your RV parked in the lower field lot. From there, the Peekamoose Blue Hole is approximately a 1.6-mile hike , right near the Peekamoose Mountain Trailhead Parking.

3. Stock up on food to cook at a farmers market.

Why go: One of the beautiful things about having an RV is that you have a full kitchen to cook meals. Stop by Vinny's Farm Market and Bakery to stock up on delicious locally grown and crafted goods to cook, snack on as your drive, or pack up for a picnic at Kaaterskill Falls.

Distance and parking: Vinny's is about 40 miles from the Sundown Wild Forest. The store is small, but there are plenty of large lots nearby to park your RV.

4. Picnic at Kaaterskill Falls.

Why go: Kaaterskill Falls is a captivating two-tier waterfall that towers over 260 feet tall. Just imagine eating some of the delicious food from the farmers market while the natural sound of water cascading surrounds you.

Distance and parking: Kaaterskill Falls is around 10 miles from Vinny's Farm Market. We recommend parking at the North-South Lake Campground and hiking toward the falls.

5. Spend the night at Watkins Glen RV Campground.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: Watkins Glen KOA Resort rests at the south central tip of the Finger Lakes. There are plenty of activities at the campground families will love, like zip-lining, bumper boats, bicycles to rent, and more — plus they have full hookup sites, so you can spare the generator and tend to your tanks.

Distance and parking: Watkins Glen is a little under 200 miles from Kaaterskill Falls. They have a variety of options for overnight RV camping.

6. Hike through Watkins Glen State Park.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: Start off your morning with an easy and alluring hike through Watkins Glen . Serene trails snake through the park, hugging the banks of flowing rivers and waterfalls.

Distance and parking: The entrance to Watkins Glen is just about five miles from the campground. Rent bicycles from the campground or order a taxi/ride-share service on your phone to avoid moving your RV.

7. Grab lunch at Ryan William Vineyard.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: A trip to the Finger Lakes isn't complete without trying some of the world-renowned wines, and Ryan William is one of many great vineyards in the area that also serves food. Grab lunch at The Tasting Barn while enjoying the vibrant green fields of grapes. Don't forget to grab some bottles so your driver can enjoy the wine with you at the campground or on one of your adventures.

Distance and parking: This vineyard is a 10-mile drive from the Watkins Glen campground. There is enough parking space available for an RV, but depending on the time of your visit, space may be limited.

8. See some live music and the spectacle of Taughannock Falls.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: Nestled up next to Cayuga Lake is the enchanting Taughannock Falls State Park . Its eponymous waterfall towers 215 feet from the ground, and its surrounding cliffs reach a staggering 400 feet. During the summer, the park offers concerts by the lake if you want to sit and enjoy some great music while surrounded by nature.

Distance and parking: Taughannock Falls State Park is a little under 20 miles from Ryan William Vineyard. You can find parking for your RV inside the state park.

9. Camp for the night near Niagara Falls.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: After taking in all the beautiful nature and vast vineyards of the Finger Lakes, drive about three hours west toward the Canadian–American border. Stay at the Branches of Niagara Campground so you can wake up early and take in all the splendor of Niagara Falls. Since Niagara is so popular, we recommend booking in advance.

Distance and parking: The drive from Taughannock Falls to Niagara is about 150 miles. The campground offers multiple sites for RV camping.

10. Marvel at Niagara Falls.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: After whetting your appetite with some of the best waterfalls of New York State, it's time to take in the utter majesty of Niagara Falls. There are a lot of ways to see Niagara Falls, like bike rentals or a boat tour !

Distance and parking: Niagara Falls State Park is about nine miles from the campground. Luckily, there's RV parking at Niagara Falls State Park in New York, so park your RV before following the energizing sounds of the roaring falls.

11. Bike through Niagara-on-the-Lake.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: Niagara-on-the-Lake has old-town charm and is bustling with so many great restaurants and boutiques. Rent some road bikes so you can cover as much of the town as you desire. The bike rental company also offers wine and beer biking tours if that's your sort of thing.

Distance and parking: Niagara-on-the-Lake is less than 20 miles from the US side of Niagara Falls, but plan for time to cross the border. Once inside Niagara-on-the-Lake, you should find plenty of shopping centers, like Outlet Collection , with large parking lots for your RV.

12. Chow down on Tuscan pizza at the Old Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar.

Why go: While you're there, reward yourself with delicious pizza and Tuscan food from the Old Winery . Niagara-on-the-Lake has a rich community of local vineyards, so for those of you not driving, be sure to try some of their wine. (You can always thank whoever's driving with a bottle for them to enjoy at the campground later.)

Distance and parking: Niagara-on-the-Lake is small enough to get around, which is why we encourage renting road bikes. Old Town is right by the bike rental, so it's a great last stop before returning them.

13. Spend the night at Gulliver's Lake RV Resort & Campground.

canada road trip from nyc

Why go: Before the rest of your trek to Toronto, catch up on sleep at Gulliver's Lake campgrounds . They have full hookup stations (water, electricity, and sewer), as well as paddleboat and kayak rentals if you want to get out on the lake.

Distance and parking: Gulliver's Lake is about 59 miles (or 95 kilometers because we're in Canada now — adios, miles!) from Niagara-on-the-Lake and should take a little over an hour to get there. There are plenty of sites for RV camping.

14. Go tubing at Elora Gorge Conservation Area.

Why go: You've had a full trip of hiking, driving, and exploring. Finish off your trip floating the calming waters of Elora Gorge before making the rest of your trek to Toronto. You can rent tubes there or bring your own.

Distance and parking: Elora Gorge is about 60 kilometers (or 37 miles) away from Gulliver's Lake. There is parking within the area for your RV.

Our Favorite 7-Day Road Trips From New York

7-day road trip from new york to vermont and new hampshire.

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Marthas_Vineyard_Boston_Killington-1

After planning a packed visit to New York, with all its museums, restaurants, and Broadway shows, take a road trip to Vermont and New Hampshire to really enjoy one of America’s most beautiful spots. With New Hampshire about four and a half hours by car from New York and Vermont just an hour or two from New Hampshire, this is a trip that prioritizes time outside.

Head to Bretton Woods in New Hampshire in the White Mountain National Forest for some of the region’s best snowshoeing in the winter and incredible mountain biking and hiking during the summer. Over in Vermont, the Killington Resort is one of the region’s biggest, also offering snowmobile tours, a tubing park, and more.

Wondering when to plan your Vermont and New Hampshire road trip? It’s easy to take advantage of your preferred season. For skiing in Vermont and New Hampshire, the snowfall can start in November and often lasts until mid-April. For hiking and fishing, come in the summer. For the stunning colors of changing leaves, come in autumn.

Roadtrip from NYC to Watkins Glen and Letchworth State Parks, Niagara Falls and 1000 Islands

Roadtrips from New York Finger Lakes Watkins Glen Niagara Falls 1000 Islands

We have again made a great tour from New York: The route leads once through the entire state of New York, with Niagara Falls on the northeastern border with Canada, along the beautiful Finger Lakes to the 1000 Islands on the northeastern border. You can expect a beautiful landscape with many farms, rivers and dreamlike nature.

After this tour, which incidentally follows the course of the Erie Canal, which is largely responsible for the rise of New York City, you can also proudly claim to have been in Lebanon, Athens, Rome, London, Amsterdam, Russia and Hamburg. Because all of these places are located along this great road trip.

The next road trip from New York on my list is quite similar but you spend more time in Canada with Toronto and Montreal on your list.

7-Day Road Trip From New York to Canada

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Toronto_Montreal_Thousand_Islands-1

Did you know that New York shares a border with Canada? It can be easy to forget with all of the focus on Manhattan that New York state is actually a fairly big state – and one that connects with America’s neighbor the north.

For a break from New York city life and to experience Canadian culture, you’ll enjoy a weeklong road trip to Canada with stops at Niagara Falls (even taking a boat underneath the falls!), Toronto (where you can size up the city with the view from the CN Tower), and Montreal (where you’ll see the French influence is still alive and well).

Driving from New York to Niagara Falls will take just under seven hours. From there, you’ll drive for two hours to Toronto. Toronto to Montreal is about five and a half hours. Then returning to New York will take about five hours. Though chillier in the winter, this is a beautiful roadtrip from NYC to take no matter the season.

Get To Know America’s Roots on this Roadtrip from New York

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Richmond_Shenandoah_Valley_Baltimore-1

New York can feel like the most American of cities: lots of cultures, lots of opportunity, lots of, well, everything. If you want to spend some time getting to know American history, then use a weeklong road trip to head to Washington D.C. and Virginia.

In Washington, D.C., which is about fours from Manhattan by car, you’ll find the National Mall, one of the most concentrated and impressive collections of museums in the United States. Continuing onto Virginia, which was home to four of America’s first five presidents, you can visit living-history museums like the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg.

After your fill of culture and history, you can take advantage of the stunning Shenandoah Valley before taking a four-hour drive over to Virginia’s Eastern Shore to soak up the ocean sprays.

Given this mix of city visits and natural parks, this is a trip that’s enjoyable throughout the year.

Taste Southern Hospitality in South Carolina on this roadtrip from NYC

Roadtrip_From_NYC_South_Carolina_Charleston_Blue_Ridge_Parkway

After a few hectic days in the hustle and bustle of New York, a trip down the coast to South Carolina can be a wonderful experience. The total driving time from Manhattan down to South Carolina is about 11 hours. Spread out over six or seven days, that means you can enjoy visits to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina on your way to Hilton Head and Charleston, South Carolina.

So-called the Birthplace of Barbecue , South Carolina is as much a culinary destination as a cultural one. Enjoy the change of pace and scenery over your weeklong road trip as you enjoy true Southern Hospitality.

If you’re planning a winter vacation in New York, South Carolina may be a bit warmer, offering you a chance to thaw out. During the summer it can be more humid. Either way, the barbecue is always delicious and the people are always charming.

Roadtrip from NYC to Boston, White Mountains, Niagara Falls and Washington D.C.

Roadtrip from New York Martha

This tour along the East Coast is one of the most impressive road trips I have taken in the USA so far. In October 2016, my father and I started in New York – where else?! I wanted to show him why I have loved this city so much for years and which spots are close to my heart.

In total, this route takes you a total of 1,600 miles through 12 US states. What are our highlights of this road trip on the East Coast of the USA for us, I show you here in the travel review.

History And Food In And Around Philadelphia

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Philadelphia_Brandywine_Valley_Washington_Hershey

If you are looking for an amazing weekend road trip adventure from New York look no further! Apart from being known for Rocky’s hometown, Philadelphia is also one of America’s most iconic and historical cities. It’s even where the signing of the Declaration of Independence happened on August 2nd, 1776! So if you’re looking to add a weekend trip onto your time in New York, Philadelphia and a few of its surrounding cities could make for a great choice.

At just under two hours by car (and even less by train!) Philadelphia is an easy trip from New York. Along with stopping by to see the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall, you can also see the birthplace of the American flag and the Museum of the American Revolution (before taking a lunch break to grab a renowned Philly Cheesesteak).

To make a weekend of it, it’s worth turning toward the countryside and heading toward Brandywine Valley. Filled with quaint towns and rolling hills, the region also has a number of renowned wineries making up the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail.

And what pairs with wine better than chocolate? Just an hour and a half by car to the west, Hershey is the birthplace of Hershey chocolate and the so-called Sweetest Place on Earth. Ideal for families, Hershey features the Hershey Story Museum, Hershey’s Chocolate World, and Hershey Gardens.

Though there are a number of Christmastime activities that make for even sweeter seasonal celebrations, the attractions are open year-round, making Philadelphia, Brandywine, and Hershey a great weekend trip to take from New York.

My tip: An additional stop in Washington D.C. is a great extension to this road trip from New York. Besides the White House, you can visit the Lincoln Memorial, the famous Smithsonian Museums, the United States Capitol or the Washington Monument.

Hike Upstate New York: One Of The Best Weekend Road Trip Adventures From New York

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Hike_Upstate_New_York

When you want to get out of the city for a few days, hiking in upstate New York is one of the best options. No matter the time of year, hiking in the Adirondacks, the Catskills, and the surrounding regions always offers incredible views, serene nature, and charming small-town atmosphere.

To get to the Adirondacks from Manhattan, you’ll need about four and a half hours in a car. Perfect for a morning start and a leisurely afternoon hike. Among some of our favorite Adirondack adventures are the Ausable Chasm (which also has white-water rafting for those summer month trips), Cascade Mountain (the supposed easiest of the 46 High Peaks), Mount Marcy (the highest of the 46 High Peaks), and the Saranac Lake 6er (a delightful hiking challenge you can try and tackle in a single weekend).

At just over two hours driving time, the Catskills are an even more accessible weekend trip from New York. With stunning waterfall hikes (don’t miss the Haines Falls!), the Hunter Mountain Fire Tower (one of the region’s most challenging hikes), and plentiful Nordic skiing and snowshoeing , there are plenty of outdoors activities to choose from.

With well-marked trails for any season, you’ll find the snowy hikes and the summertime strolls equally enjoyable. Just make sure you’re dressed for the occasion!

Go Wine Tasting In The Finger Lakes

Roadtrip_From_NYC_Finger_Lakes_Region_Wine_Tasting

Want to taste some of the best wine in New York? Soak up the small-town life in some of the state’s quaintest towns? Enjoy some idyllic lakes?

Then it’s time to head to the Finger Lakes Region. Located in upstate New York, the Finger Lakes is home to towns like Ithaca (and Cornell University, the region’s Ivy League), Watkins Glen (some of the best hiking in the area), and Geneva ( recent winner of the All-America City award ).

If you’re looking to get your wine on, the Finger Lakes themselves have four official wine trails ready to be embarked on. This includes

  • the Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail
  • the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail (“America’s First Wine Trail”)
  • the Keuka Lake Wine Trail,
  • and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.

From Manhattan to the Finger Lakes, you can expect to spend about 5 hours in the car. Perfect for a Friday departure with a few roadside attractions, a lazy Saturday, and then a return late Sunday afternoon. With wine-tasting rooms and events all year round, the time is always right to stop by the Finger Lakes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Road Trips From New York

If I rent a car, does my road trip have to end back at New York?

Nope! Most rental car agencies are flexible with the return location for your rental car. There may, however, be a slight surcharge for returning it in a different spot than you started.

Which states make up the New England region?

This is one of the most gorgeous areas to visit during the autumn. But for those not familiar with the area, the name can be a little misleading. New England is the name given to a northeastern region of the U.S., and it includes Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

What’s the best time of year to do a road trip from New York?

There’s an argument to be made for each season. New York City is the hottest during the summer, so a road trip can be a nice way to escape the heat and explore some of the amazing nature around it. If you’re planning to spend time exploring other cities, a road trip in the spring and fall will give you the most agreeable temperatures. And if you’re planning to do some winter sports, then the winter season will work best. The only risk with winter is, naturally, that a large snowstorm could make travel by road difficult. Fortunately, the region is well-prepared to handle this kind of weather and delays would likely be minimal.

The New York State Museum has been open since 1836 and includes works of art, documentation and more from the state’s history.

Another significant museum stop in Albany is the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Opened in 1791, this museum is considered one of the oldest in the USA and has one of the most important historical collections of American artefacts.

Spend some time taking in the architecture surrounding Empire State Plaza.

The impressive New York State Capitol building takes centre stage here, with a large rectangular pond leading up to its doors.

Guided tours of this 1899 building are available, so bring your camera.

Driving from Saratoga Springs to Albany covers 34.3 miles (55.2 kilometres) and takes approximately 40 minutes.

Board a tour boat to take in the beauty and history of Hudson Athens Lighthouse, a unique stopping point on your road trip and a fun thing to do with children.

The lighthouse dates back to 1873 and is unique in its design as it reflects a traditional home but it is placed in the Hudson River’s centre.

On a 60-minute tour, you will cruise around the lighthouse and disembark to explore the insides of the building.

Inside, the rooms are set up to reflect the lighthouse’s early days with age-appropriate decor and objects of interest.

Climb to the top of the lighthouse to uncover how it works today and for good views over the Hudson River.

Driving from Albany to Hudson Athens Lighthouse covers 38.3 miles (61.64 kilometres) and takes approximately 45 minutes.

After visiting Hudson Athens Lighthouse, drive to the nearby Olana State Historic Site.

Frederic Church, a famous 19th-century American landscape artist, had Olana built for him as a family home and studio.

The artist designed Olana to reflect his love for the natural world and to serve as a base whilst he travelled the world painting some of the most famous landscapes.

Church raised his four children at Olana with his wife Isabel, and they were frequently visited by impressive guests from the arts and literary worlds such as Mark Twain and Susan Hale.

Visit the carefully designed gardens of Olana and explore its 250-acre site before taking a tour of the building itself.

Inside the home are many paintings by Church and rooms preserved to reflect when his family used it.

Driving from Hudson Athens Lighthouse to Olana State Historic Site covers 4.4 miles (7.08 kilometres) and takes approximately 10 minutes.

Spend the day immersed in nature and relax at Lake Taghkanic and its lush forested surroundings.

The lake has plenty of activities on offer for everyone to enjoy.

There is a large playground for younger children, a swimming beach, a rental area for kayaks and paddle boards, and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy a picnic.

There are several hiking trails from the lake through the forests and around the shore of the lake.

If you plan on extending your stay, camping grounds, cottages and RV-accessible sites are available.

Driving from Olana State Historic Site to Lake Taghkanic covers 14.6 miles (23.5 kilometres) and takes approximately 25 minutes.

Further up from Wappingers Falls is the tiny, quiet and beautiful Little Wappingers Falls.

This peaceful attraction is rarely visited, so expect quiet solitude when you arrive.

Walk through the woods along the river’s edge to access the falls.

The water cascades over a rocky plinth down into the pool below. Pack a picnic by the water’s edge before continuing your journey.

Whilst visiting Little Wappingers Falls, look out for Bloom’s Mill, a former sawmill used to house soldiers during the Revolutionary War.

Driving from Lake Taghkanic to Little Wappingers Falls covers 24 miles (38.62 kilometres) and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Driving from Little Wappingers Falls to Poughkeepsie covers 12.9 miles (20.76 kilometres) and takes approximately 20 minutes.

Take time to reflect at Chuang Yen Monastery, part of the Buddhist Association of the United States.

The monastery is open to the public to explore the grounds and some of its buildings and temples.

The monastery includes Woo-Ju Library, Thousand Lotus Memorial Terrace and the awe-inspiring Great Buddha Hall.

Inside the Great Buddha Hall is the largest statue of Buddha indoors in the western hemisphere.

If you visit around lunchtime on the weekend, head to the Dining Hall to enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch provided by the monastery’s volunteers.

Donations of $6 are suggested for this, which is incredible value for the delicious food you receive.

Driving from Poughkeepsie to Chuang Yen Monastery covers 25.4 miles (40.87 kilometres) and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Autumn foliage on Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain State Park is on the Hudson River’s western bank, a leafy natural area spanning 5205 acres (2106 ha).

Take a longer and more challenging hike up to the summit of Bear Mountain for panoramic views over the river and the surrounding wilderness of the Hudson Highlands.

While at Bear Mountain, make the most of the great outdoors by hiking, swimming in the lake or cycling, or simply enjoying a picnic at the foot of the mountain before continuing your road trip.

Driving from Chuang Yen Monastery to Bear Mountain covers 19.9 miles (32.03 kilometres) and takes approximately 30 minutes.

Continue making the most of nature before heading into the city by spending the day at Blue Mountain Reservation, a country park in Westchester.

The park spans 1538 acres (622 ha) of forests, parkland, and Blue Mountain.

This long stretch of golden sand runs along the Long Island Sound and is the ideal destination if you are road-tripping in spring or summer.

There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and a long promenade to stroll along.

During summer, the beach has lifeguards and swimming is possible thanks to its shallow waters.

Nicholas Schmidt/Travel + Leisure

Venturing to Old Town Alexandria will help you feel a world away from the bustle of NYC. Architecture enthusiasts will love Old Town's 18th- and 19th-century facades, while the shopping-inclined traveler will enjoy patronizing the inviting local businesses. Right on the Potomac, Alexandria is one of our favorite southern U.S. cities — right up there with Savannah and Charleston — but it's only four hours from NYC by car.

5. Catskills, New York

Cooperstown is a four-hour drive from NYC through the scenic Catskill Mountains. Stay close to Otsego Lake at The Inn at Cooperstown ; built in 1874, the historic, award-winning hotel is home to 18 beautiful guest rooms. From Cooperstown, it's a short ride to the north end of the lake and Glimmerglass State Park , a perfect spot for out-of-town visitors to explore.

Meanwhile, the charming Catskills town of Roxbury is a quick, three-hour drive from NYC. Stay at The Roxbury at Stratton Falls , a lovely boutique hotel with eclectic decor. If you love to stargaze, book the astronomy-focused Galileo's Gate cottage with its own glass-ceiling observation deck.

6. Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania

The Pocono Mountains are an easy getaway from New York City, just under two hours away. For those who want a full nature immersion, consider a stay at Cranberry Run Campground . It's surrounded by 65 acres of woodlands, and campers can hang out at the on-site outdoor pool or explore the nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting.

7. Lexington, Massachusetts

Situated approximately 15 miles from Boston in bucolic woodlands, Lexington is the perfect destination for American history buffs. Stay at the stunning 22-room Inn at Hastings Park , a Relais & Châteaux property that's centrally located to Walden Pond, Battle Green (where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired), the Hancock-Clarke House, and the Orchard House (where "Little Women" was set). You can reach this town in less than four hours from NYC.

8. Niagara Falls, New York

It'll take seven hours from NYC, but if you trek 400 miles north of the city, you'll make it to Niagara Falls, New York. The trip itself is exceptionally scenic, with plenty of opportunity for hiking or picnic lunches along the way. Once you arrive at Niagara Falls State Park , you'll be overwhelmed by the rainbows, mist, and thunderous roar generated by the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls.

9. Newport, Rhode Island

Only a four-hour drive from NYC, Newport is a must-visit for all East Coast road trippers. This summer, stay at The Vanderbilt for a taste of opulence. With 33 rooms located in the authentic former mansion of a real Vanderbilt, the property was recently renovated and offers unique experiences, like a wine tasting paired with a vinyl listening session on a vintage gramophone and tea leaf reading sessions with a professional psychic.

10. Haines Falls, New York

The Catskills are so nice that they made the list twice. With majestic waterfalls, unique towns, and beautiful scenery, the region offers incredible outdoor experiences. The hamlet of Haines Falls, in the Great Northern Catskills , is home to the highest cascading waterfall in New York state, Kaaterskill Falls . The trail, which is open year-round, is about a mile and a half round-trip. Road trippers should also head to Round Top to see Glen Falls, which doubles as a popular swimming hole during the warmer months.

11. The Berkshires, Massachusetts

Drive three hours from NYC, and you'll wind up in the stunning Berkshires in western Massachusetts. While visiting, grab iced coffees and croissants from Six Depot Roastery & Cafe and picnic along Shaker Mill Pond. For a quintessentially charming New England stay, check out The Old Inn on the Green .

12. North Fork, New York

Head out to the North Fork of Long Island, which has great dining and wineries, but is still quieter than the buzzing Hampton towns on the South Fork. On your way to the North Fork from NYC, stop off at Jerry & the Mermaid for lunch. Your first winery in North Fork should be Bedell Cellars . And when you're driving back to the city, if the season is right, take a detour to see the lavender fields at Lavender by the Bay .

13. Keene Valley, Adirondacks, New York

The Adirondacks are worth visiting in any season. Keene is well-situated in the highest peaks of the Adirondacks, offering great downhill and cross-country skiing in the winter, and hiking in the summer (we recommend taking the Giant Mountain trail at the base of Roaring Brook Falls). For a lovely bed-and-breakfast, check out the Keene Valley Lodge .

T he Northeast is the perfect region for a road trip. Filled with diverse cities and towns, the East Coast offers ski resorts, beaches, attractions, history, and so much more.

I’ve selected specific start and end points for demonstration, but keep in mind that you can adjust these trips based on where you live and where you want to end up. If you are looking for an epic East Coast road trip itinerary, you may consider combining some of these road trips along the East Coast to make a longer trip.

7 of the Best East Coast Road Trip Ideas

Canada – boston road trip.

I have so many fond memories of traveling to Canada each summer from my home in Rhode Island. If you live in the Northeast, there are several great Canadian destinations to visit, including Toronto, Niagara Falls, Montreal, and Quebec City .

Our favorite road trip to Canada is from Boston to Quebec City. There are two main routes to take, and to see more sites, you may want to take one route on the way there, and one route on the way back.

The first route takes about 7 hours and goes through the White Mountains National Forest . We typically try to stay overnight part of the way through that trip – usually stopping in Lincoln, New Hampshire.

Our pick in Lincoln, NH is the Mountain Club on Loon

  • Great location
  • Nice family rooms
  • Indoor and outdoor pools

The second route takes about an extra half hour and goes through Maine, including the southern coast of Maine. Although it isn’t halfway, you may consider staying in Portland, Maine . There’s so much to do, including some fantastic restaurants and great shops.

Our pick in Portland Maine is the Press Hotel

  • Fantastic theme with some great fun touches
  • Member of the Autograph Collection

If you’d rather visit Montreal, you’ll travel through both New Hampshire and Vermont. A good stopping point is right on the NH/Vermont border, near Hanover, NH. That trip, from Boston to Montreal, takes a little over 5 hours. It can definitely be done in a day, but it’s also nice to stop over in New Hampshire/Vermont on your way.

New England Road Trip

You could easily explore much of what New England has to offer with a road trip. For this type of trip, you’ll want to start and end at the same point. There are so many scenic drives as well as historic sites in the area.

During your trip, you may want to visit the following places:

  • Rockport, MA
  • Lake Winnipesaukee, NH
  • Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor
  • Lincoln, NH
  • Cape Cod, MA
  • North Conway, NH
  • Portland, Maine
  • New Haven, CT
  • Newport, RI

A few years ago, we did a culinary road trip from Portland, Maine to New Haven, CT. This trip was a great way to sample delicious food and see fabulous museums. Make sure you research in advance to figure out which attractions you want to see on this type of trip.

If you aren’t from the New England area, I’d recommend starting and ending your trip in Boston. It’s a good central location, and that’s the largest of the airports in the area. Getting a flight to Boston from most larger United States airports is pretty easy.

Northeast – Florida Road Trip

When I was a kid, my family road-tripped from our home in Rhode Island down to the Orlando area in Florida several times. This journey, which takes about 24 hours, can seem very long. But there are also some great places to stop along the way.

To break things up, you’ll want to have several drivers or stop at least overnight. You can also make several stops, seeing varying sites along the way.

For much of this trip, you’ll be traveling down I-95. Ideas for stops include:

  • New York City
  • Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Washington DC
  • Richmond, Virginia
  • Fayetteville, North Carolina
  • Savannah, Georgia
  • Jacksonville, Florida
  • Daytona Beach, Florida
  • St. Augustine, Florida (the oldest city in the United States)

Other popular spots, like Bethany Beach Delaware, and Charleston South Carolina, would be detours of the route. But if they are must-dos, definitely build some time for those side trips.

Typically, we would do this type of road trip to visit Walt Disney World. However, you could definitely go beyond that, and visit the Southernmost point of the United States, all the way in the Florida Keys at Key West. Just keep in mind that you will likely need to make several overnight stops. Those are best reserved in advance for the best availability.

Northeast – Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a popular summer destination. If you are thinking of traveling there, a road trip from the Northeast can be a great option. Overall, the trip will take about 12 hours (depending on where you depart from), and there are several stops you can make along the way.

  • New York City, NY
  • Norfolk, Virginia
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia

Boston-Washington DC Road Trip

A few years ago, we drove from our home in the Boston area to Washington DC. This trip takes about 8 to 8 ½ hours if you drive straight through. However, if you are trying to make it more of a journey, there are several East Coast road trip stops you can make along the way.

  • Hartford, Connecticut
  • New Haven, Connecticut

During our trip, we decided to leave after school on the last day before spring break. So, we drove in the evening until we reached Greenwich, CT. We stayed overnight there and then continued to DC. On our way back, we wanted to get home, so we drove the whole way back straight through.

If you want to stop at multiple cities for a longer stay, I’d recommend stopping in NYC and Philadelphia. These two large US cities offer so many attractions and historical sites that they are great for a family vacation.

Our pick in Philadelphia is the Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia City Center

  • Fun boutique hotel
  • Unique rooms
  • Fantastic location

Boston-NYC Road Trip

It’s a short trip, but there are tons to see on the journey from Boston to New York City. It’s a bit longer, but if you are looking to see a few places along the way, I’d recommend taking Route 95. This trip will take you through Rhode Island and the coast of Connecticut.

On your trip, you can stop in Mystic, Connecticut, and New Haven, Connecticut to visit their attractions and eat the delicious local food (don’t miss trying the iconic New Haven pizza).

You can easily do this trip in one day. If you do choose to do that, I’d recommend picking one attraction in Mystic to visit. With younger kids, the Mystic Aquarium is probably the best choice. It’s one of my favorite aquariums and is usually a big hit with kids.

Revolutionary War/Hamilton Road Trip

The East Coast is home to so many US history sites that you could easily plan a road trip right around those sites. One idea is a Hamilton road trip, which will take you to many of the sites mentioned in Hamilton: An American Musical.

For this road trip, I’d recommend the following stops. This itinerary starts in the south and moves north, but of course, you could do it in the opposite direction.

  • Yorktown Battlefield Virginia (Mentioned in the song Yorktown (the World Turned Upside Down)
  • Monticello (Mentioned in the song What Did I Miss?) – Charlottesville, VA)
  • James Madison’s Montpelier (not explicitly mentioned in the musical, but Madison is a main character in the second act)
  • George Washington’s Mount Vernon (Mentioned in Right Hand Man and Stay Alive)
  • Washington Monument/Thomas Jefferson Memorial (Washington Monument mentioned in Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story)
  • The Bureau of Engraving and Printing
  • Weehawken, NJ (Mentioned in My Obedient Servant)
  • Richard Rodgers Theater, NYC

Expect a record-breaking number of travelers on Fourth of July week: How to avoid traffic

canada road trip from nyc

  • An estimated 70.9 million people will travel for the Fourth of July holiday, a record-breaking number.
  • The most popular domestic destinations are Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, Honolulu and Miami.
  • The worst times to drive for 4th of July week are July 3 and 4 between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

If you’re one of the projected record-breaking 70.9 million travelers going on a Fourth of July trip, get ready to pack some patience.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a statement. “We anticipate this July 4 week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Whether you’re going by airplane or car, traveler numbers are hitting historic highs. An estimated 5.74 million people will fly to their Independence Day destination, a 7% increase from 2023. (We can thank domestic airfare being slightly cheaper this year for that.)

This year, 2.8 million more people will travel by car than last year, for a total of 60.6 million travelers. According to AAA partner and rental car company Hertz, cities like Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver and San Francisco are showing the highest rental car demand.

Here’s everything you need to know about Fourth of July travel.

On July 3 and 4, drivers should avoid being on the road between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., when traffic will be most congested. On Friday, July 5, the worst traffic will be between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.

7 Scenic New York Road Trips to take in the Fall

The air is crisp, the leaves are changing color, and it is harvest season at the apple orchards, farms, and wineries across New York state. Before winter arrives, it is the perfect time to escape from NYC or visit from a neighboring state on one of these New York road trips. Hop in the car and then go on a hike, visit a farm or winery, check out some of New York state’s unique museums and attractions, and enjoy the beautiful fall foliage.

Get ready for your road trip and download some audiobooks to pass the time or road trip games for the kiddos. Soon you will be driving past glowing fields of goldenrod, winding through mountain roads rich with color, and sitting at the edge of peaceful lakes enjoying the view.

There are so many great spots to enjoy New York fall foliage .

1. Hudson River Valley

Beacon NY harbor

If you are looking for a quick escape from New York City, the Hudson River Valley awaits. In fact, you don’t even necessarily need a car, as trains can get you there just as easily, but it will help when you want to explore outside of the towns that line the rail tracks. Dutchess County, on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, is home to many indoor and outdoor attractions that are perfect to visit in the fall.

Base yourself in Beacon, the hip town called the “Brooklyn” of the Hudson Valley. Here you can explore the galleries and boutiques or hop a boat tour out to Bannerman Castle , an abandoned “castle” that was formerly a munitions depot sitting on an island in the Hudson. You won’t want to miss the fabulous Dia: Beacon contemporary art museum nearby.

Further afield, you can follow the Taste NY wine or food trails to visit Millbrook Vineyards and sample exemplary maple syrup at the Crown Maple Estate . Finish off with a meal or cooking class at the Culinary Institute of America.

History buffs should also plan a visit to Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum . And Downton Abbey fans or those that enjoy the homes of the Gilded Age should also visit the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park.

FDR Library in Hyde Park NY

For scenic views, check out the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie. After your walk you can enjoy a great meal and views at Shadows on the Hudson.

Who should go: This road trip can be adapted for families but is best for romantic getaways, girls’ trips or solo travel.

Suggested length of time : 2-3 days — a long weekend is perfect for this trip

Where to stay: Roundhouse in Beacon. The Roundhouse is located right on the falls in downtown Beacon, walkable to local restaurants and shops. Located in former factory buildings, the simple and minimalist aesthetic gives this hotel a unique, boutique feel, unlike other chain hotels in the area.

Roundhouse has been restored with exceptional attention to detail. There are three buildings, the main building which houses the restaurant overlooking the falls, lounge with a wood-burning fireplace and guest rooms; an event space; and a second building of guest rooms. The rooms feature exposed brick walls, huge wood-paned factory windows, and reclaimed wood beams.

2. Catskill Mountains

The Catskill Mountains are a great destination for families and outdoor lovers. You can ride the rails with the unique Rail Explorers , swing from the treetops at the outdoor adventure course at Hunter Mountain , or go mountain biking at Windham Mountain.

This area is also known for fly fishing and hiking in places like the Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Catskill Park. Adventure junkies will enjoy white water rafting on the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River.

If you enjoy scenic drives to go leaf peeping, make a plan to check out some of the area’s covered bridges. Plan on a hike to Kaaterskill Falls, but be aware that this popular destination has limited parking so it is best to go mid-week and avoid illegal parking.

Autumn on Lake Minnewaska State Park, New York

Who should go: the Catskills have been a family travel destination for generations, but couples and solo travelers will also enjoy the area.

Suggested length of time: given the proximity to NYC, it is easy to fit in a visit to the Catskills on a weekend, or you can rent a bungalow for a week and just relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Where to stay: While most of the “Borscht Belt” resorts that you see in Dirty Dancing or the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are no longer, there are some family resorts such as Scribner’s which have reopened. Families will also enjoy the Kartrite Water Park Hotel in Monticello.

The Catskills are a perfect spot for a vacation rental on longer stays. But many families will prefer camping or glamping at the Deerpark KOA , nestled by the historic Neversink River. This KOA Holiday campground offers fun family activities including a Jumping Pillow, mining sluice, fire truck rides, slides, rock wall, and fun-bike rentals.

For something truly unique, try a stay in a retro Airstream trailer at AutoCamp Catskills . You can read my full review of AutoCamp Cape Cod and book using my referral link and save $20 off your stay.

3. Adirondacks

waterfalls and walkway at High Falls Gorge

If the mountains are calling and you are in the mood for hiking, canoeing, and outdoor adventures, head north to the Adirondack Mountains. For the easiest access, base yourself in downtown Lake Placid or quieter Saranac Lake. There are so many things to do in Lake Placid , from hiking and boating to riding the scenic gondola at Whiteface Mountain, taking in the waterfalls at High Falls Gorge, or driving the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway to the summit of Whiteface.

There are hikes for all levels, but it helps to plan ahead as many trailhead parking lots fill up early. Mt. Jo offers a short but steep hike, which is good for older kids and somewhat experienced hikers and rewards you with beautiful views.

If you are willing to take a longer hike, Mt. Von Hoevenberg is a 4.5-mile trail that winds past a beaver pond before it climbs to the summit. For more of a challenge, head over to St Regis Mountain near Saranac Lake. This 6.6-mile hike is quite steep at the end but offers a large bald summit with amazing views and a fire tower to climb. Just remember to Leave No Trace behind and take only pictures.

For longer stays, you can split your time between the Lake George area and Lake Placid. In Lake George, tour the lake on the Minne Ha Ha Steamship, drive to the top of Prospect Mountain, or visit the Fort William Henry museum.

If you are looking for day trips from the Lake Placid area, the Wild Center in Tupper Lake is a must-do for families, and thrill seekers will enjoy rafting or the adventure course at Ausable Chasm .

Who should go: this trip is perfect for families of school-age children and older, couples, or solo travelers.

Suggested length of time: since this is a long road trip from NYC, you will want to stay at least 3-4 nights but you will also find it easy to fill a full week if you enjoy hiking.

Where to stay: The Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort in Lake Placid is very family-friendly and offers a great location on Mirror Lake in downtown Lake Placid. For a more luxurious stay, you can choose the Mirror Lake Inn or the posh Lake Placid Lodge .

For a quieter, more private stay, you can also look at renting a cabin. We really enjoyed our stay in the Bear Cabin on Lake Colby. In Lake George, there are many hotels/motels in the southern section of the lake, but you may enjoy finding a vacation rental a bit further out of town.

4. Finger Lakes Region

waterfalls at Watkins Glen state park

There are eleven lakes that comprise the Finger Lakes region, with the three largest being Cayuga Lake, Seneca Lake, and Keuka Lake. Right in the center, the town of Watkins Glen at the southern tip of Seneca Lake is a perfect home base for exploring the region. Watkins Glen is also known for its Sports Car racing and the popular Watkins Glen State Park . There are so many things to do in the Finger Lakes that you will find something for everyone.

The park is not to be missed, with a mile-long path that passes 19 waterfalls along the Gorge Trail. Be prepared to climb some steps and wear sturdy shoes, as the path may be slippery when wet and muddy. It is also fun to explore the lake via boat. You can rent a boat but a boater’s license is required. It is easier to hop on board one of Captain Bill’s sightseeing cruises.

Seneca Lake pier house

If you enjoy wine, you will want to explore some of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail or the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and sample some of the Rieslings that the region is famous for.

A number of wineries offer beautiful tasting rooms with sweeping views of the lake. Pick a few to taste and compare such as Lakewood Vineyards, Chateau LaFayette Reneau, Lamoreaux Landing Wine Cellars, or pop over to Ravines Wine Cellars on Keuka Lake. Here are my recommendations for the best wineries on Seneca Lake .

Make time to also explore some of the local farms and dairies. Reisingers has apple picking, Shtayburne Dairy offers ice cream and cheese tasting flights, and at the Lively Run Goat Farm, you can meet the goats and sample any number of goat and cow cheeses.

Don’t miss a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass , which is just 30 minutes from Watkins Glen. When we visited years ago I was expecting a tribute to Corningware, but I was blown away by the beauty of the contemporary art wing. You can also watch master glass blowers in the hot studio and even participate in glass-blowing projects.

An hour west of Watkins Glen, you can also enjoy hiking by the waterfalls in Stony Brook State Park. Adventure seekers may enjoy soaring in a glider plane in the “Soaring Capital of the World” in Elmira. And history buffs can head up to Seneca Falls and visit the Women’s Rights National Historical Park and the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

If you don’t want to go that far west, Ithaca also makes a good home base for exploring Cayuga Lake. You can do everything from sunset boat cruises to wine tastings, waterfall hikes, and even talk alpacas for a walk. See more things to do in Ithaca on a girls’ trip.

Woman feeding a black alpaca

Who should go: this NY road trip is ideal for wine lovers — either couples or friend groups, but can also be a great family destination.

Suggested length of time: the Finger Lakes region is perfect for a long weekend but you could easily spend five days in the area if you are looking to do wine tasting or day trips.

Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel at night from the pier

W here to stay: The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel offers the best location for exploring the Seneca Lake wine trail and the east side of Keuka Lake. This lakefront hotel is also within walking distance to the famous Watkins Glen State Park and downtown Watkins Glen.

The Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel was named the “Best Waterfront Hotel in the Nation” by  USA Today  and is the area’s only AAA Four Diamond property. (Note: I was hosted for a two-night stay at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel. All opinions are my own.)

The rooms are large, many offering lake views, and beautifully appointed with a fresh and bright design, utilizing natural materials and soothing colors. The hotel also offers a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining.

5. Lake Chautauqua

Sunset and ducks on Lake Chautauqua

Lucille Ball was born in Jamestown, NY, and grew up in nearby Celoron on the shores of Lake Chautauqua. It is therefore no wonder that this area became a center for culture and comedy. Make a home base in Celoron on Lake Chautauqua, allowing you to explore the beautiful outdoors and the cultural attractions.

Don’t miss a visit to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown. This modern museum has the most engaging and interactive exhibits of practically any museum I have visited. Start off by setting up your comedy profile and then engage with the exhibits that have been personalized for your style. You can participate in comedy karaoke, try your hand at famous comedy sketches on a green screen, and explore the off-color adult comedy in the “Blue Room”. At the end, they will analyze your comedic style and even provide you with a custom joke to tell your friends.

Nearby, you can also visit the Lucy and Desi Museum , which tells the story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, and the lasting impact Lucille Ball has had on the TV and film industry, especially for women. The museum also includes recreated sets from I Love Lucy. Culture seekers should also see what is happening at the Chautauqua Institution , which is a summer educational and cultural resort offering classes, concerts, workshops, and more.

family exploring Panama Rocks

If you would rather stay outdoors, plan an afternoon exploring Panama Rocks Scenic Park . This privately-owned, family-run park is home to lichen-covered, towering rocks and tree roots that snake over their surfaces. Families will love venturing off the path to explore the deep crevices, passageways, and small caves, like something out of a movie set.

To get out on the water, you can rent kayaks or a pontoon boat, or take a tour on the Chautauqua Belle steamship. There are many local farms to visit in the fall, or you can take a day trip to explore the Lake Erie Wine Trail. Finish up with an afternoon of live music and craft beer at Southern Tier Brewing Company , famous for its pumpkin beer.

Who should go: this NY road trip is best for a couples getaway or a family trip.

Suggested length of time : Lake Chautauqua is a 6.5 hour drive from NYC, so you will want to spend at least 2-3 days, or combine it with a visit to Niagara Falls and the 1,000 Islands.

Chautauqua Harbor hotel view from the balcony

Where to stay: The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel offers a perfect location on Chautauqua Lake in Celoron. Lakefront rooms are spacious and offer picture-perfect views from the large balconies or patios. This hotel, which opened in 2018, has 135 rooms on the former site of Celoron Amusement Park.

The hotel features classic Arts and Crafts design, highlighting the beautiful views. This is an ideal destination hotel with indoor and outdoor pools, a full-service restaurant and bar with inside and outside dining, the Carousel Bar near the pool, and “Sunset Island” offering up the best place to enjoy a cocktail and watch the sunset. (Note: I was hosted for a two-night stay at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel. All opinions are my own.)

6. 1000 Islands

Boldt Castle from the water

The 1000 Islands is an archipelago region of the St. Lawrence River, acting as a buffer between New York and Ontario, Canada. Popular with outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs, this region has a storied past shaped by trade on the river, its role in the War of 1812, and the bootleggers during Prohibition.

Make a home base for exploring the charming town of Clayton, home to shops, restaurants, and the Clayton Opera House. From here you can explore Thousand Islands Seaway Wine Trail, famous for Ice Wine and featuring eight wineries and a distillery.

History buffs will enjoy learning about the region’s fascinating boating history at the Antique Boat Museum and Rock Island Lighthouse, complete with the keeper’s quarters and museum. There are also battle sites and military fortifications, including the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site.

A must-see with all visitors is Boldt Castle , a tribute to the Gilded Age millionaires. This turn-of-the-century castle is built on an island in the St. Lawrence River, accessible from the Canadian and U.S. sides of the border. You can also soak up the scenery with a cruise down the St. Lawrence River with Classic Island Cruises, Clayton Island Tours, or Uncle Sam Boat Tours.

The St. Lawrence River is also a popular fishing destination. While the river is teeming with fish like bass, northern pike, and trout, in the fall season, anglers hope to snare one of the elusive monster muskie fish, which can reach lengths of 60 inches or more.

Who should go: this road trip is great for families and couples.

Suggested length of trip : it takes 5.5-6 hours to drive from NYC to the Thousand Islands, so you will want to stay for at least a long weekend or combine it with a visit to the Finger Lakes or the Adirondacks.

1000 Islands Harbor Hotel from above

Where to stay: The 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel is situated on the banks of the St. Lawrence River just a short stroll away from the picturesque town of Clayton. It is the only AAA Four Diamond Hotel in the region, with over 100 guest rooms and adjacent to a new 40-slip transient dock.

7. Niagara Falls

Horseshoe falls at Niagara Falls

Of course Niagara Falls is beautiful at any time of year but it especially glows in the fall when the autumn colors rim the thundering falls. A boat ride on the Maid of the Mist is a must-do iconic experience.

Thrill-seekers can also zipline over the water, take a Journey Behind the Falls, or ride the Whirlpool Jet Boats. There are family fun attractions like the Niagara Skywheel, historical sites like Fort George National Historic Site, and outdoor attractions like the Botanical Gardens.

Who should go: Niagara Falls used to be a honeymoon destination but today it has turned into a family vacation destination.

Suggested length of trip: Niagara Falls is a 7 hour drive from New York City so you will want to spend at least 2-3 days exploring the many attractions in the area. To make a week of it, stop in the Finger Lakes or Chautauqua Lake on the way or add on a few days in Buffalo afterwards and return home along the Upstate Eats Trail .

Where to stay: most of the major hotel brands offer hotel properties in Niagara Falls (just check if they are on the USA or Canadian side) including the Sheraton Niagara Falls and the Hyatt Place .

Travelling for Canada Day or U.S. Independence Day? The CBSA gives tips for a smoother trip

From: Canada Border Services Agency

News release

June 25, 2024 Ottawa, Ontario

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reminds travellers of what to expect when crossing the border for the upcoming Canada Day and U.S. Independence Day holidays.

Every day, the CBSA works hard to protect Canadians, support the economy and ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across our borders. In 2023, we welcomed over 86M travellers and intercepted more than 72,200 kg of prohibited drugs, cannabis, narcotics, and chemicals, representing an increase of close to 30% from 2022.

The CBSA dedicates significant efforts to planning and preparing for peak periods, including long weekends and summer months. We monitor traveller volumes and plan to minimize border wait times at land ports of entry and at international airports, without compromising safety and security.

Here are some tips to help you plan for your trip:

Before you travel, plan ahead

  • Early mornings are the best time to cross the border to avoid wait times
  • The Mondays after holiday long weekends tend to be the busiest.
  • Consider an alternative port of entry with shorter wait times or less traffic.
  • Check the port of entry’s hours of operation on the official  CBSA Directory of Offices and Services
  • If you are using a GPS application (such as Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze) to direct you to a port of entry, consider checking different navigation options (such as fastest and shortest routes) to determine the preferred route of travel.
  • Have your  travel documents  handy.  Speed up processing times by always coming prepared with your travel documents.
  • Travelling with children? When  travelling with a child  who is not your own or for whom you don’t have full legal custody, we recommend you have a consent letter from the parent or legal guardian authorizing you to travel with the child. We are always watching for  missing children , and in the absence of the letter, officers may ask additional questions.
  • Flying into Canada? Use Advance Declaration and make your customs and immigration declaration up to 72 hours in advance of your arrival into Canada at participating airports.
  • Entering Canada by boat? You must report to the CBSA without delay. Review  reporting requirements for private boaters  before making travel plans.

At the border, b e prepared to declare

Declare everything you have with you upon entry into Canada. If arriving by land, you are responsible for everything inside your vehicle. If you are the operator of a boat entering Canadian waters with the intent to disembark, you are responsible for reporting your goods on board.

Are you bringing any of the following into Canada?

  • Food, plant, or animal products:  Consult the  Automated Import Reference System (AIRS) before bringing any food, plant, or animal products into Canada.
  • Poultry products: Be sure to review current restrictions on poultry and birds from the United States  before bringing these products across the border. Homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada.
  • Fireworks:  Consult  Importing, exporting and transporting fireworks  to ensure that the fireworks you are bringing in are authorized.
  • Medication:  Make sure you understand  your responsibilities when travelling with medication.
  • Firewood:   Firewood  from outside of Canada is not permitted as it may contain diseases or invasive insects. Buy local and burn local.
  • Make sure know how much you are bringing back in Canadian dollars and have your receipts readily available for the officer.
  • Use the  CBSA duty and taxes estimator to help estimate the amounts owed on goods purchased abroad.

Restricted and prohibited goods

Make sure you review the necessary information before attempting to bring certain items into Canada.  If not, you risk having your goods seized or facing fines and/or prosecution.

  • Firearms: Leave them at home. You are encouraged not to travel with firearms. If you choose to do so, be sure to check the  rules on importing firearms .
  • Weapons: Other restricted and prohibited goods include pepper spray, switchblades, and butterfly knives.
  • Narcotics :  Narcotics such as cocaine and heroin, are illegal in Canada. If you are found to be in possession of illegal drugs (on your person, in your vehicle, or in your luggage) you will be arrested and may be charged. The drugs will be seized.
  • Cannabis: Don’t bring it in. Don’t take it out. While cannabis is legal in Canada, bringing it across the border in any form, including oils containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), without a permit or exemption  authorized by Health Canada is a serious criminal offence subject to arrest and prosecution. A medical prescription from a doctor does not count as Health Canada authorization.

Not sure? Ask a CBSA officer.  The best way to save time is to be open and honest with the CBSA officer. If you are not sure about what to declare, don't hesitate to ask.

Best road trip route from Toronto to New York

The route for our road trip from Toronto to New York begins in the province of Ontario, in the most populous city in Canada. It will take us across the border and through the US states of New York and New Jersey, before bringing us to our destination in America's most populous city, NYC.

It goes without saying that, as this route crosses the international border between Canada and the US, you will need to check whether you need travel documents ahead of your journey. These will vary depending on your nationality, so make sure to plan ahead to avoid any last-minute delays to your trip.

Road trip route from Toronto to New York

Set off west on Queen Elizabeth Way and follow it around the western shore of Lake Ontario, until it brings you to Ontario Highway 420, which you will follow across Rainbow International Bridge and into America. This border crossing can get busy in peak season, sometimes adding an extra hour to your journey.

After crossing the border take Rainbow Blvd south to John Daly Boulevard. Turn right onto this and then, almost immediately, cross the roundabout onto Niagara Scenic Parkway.

Follow this its entire length, along the banks of the Niagara River, until it merges with the I-190. Take that south across Grand Island and then, once you have passed back onto the mainland, exit onto the I-290.

Merge onto the I-90 at Exit 1-49, and follow this all the way to Albany, passing Rochester and Syracuse on the way.

At Albany, you'll switch onto the I-87 and follow it south along the historic Hudson valley.

If you're stopping at Woodstock, leave the I-87 at exit 20, then make your way back to the Interstate to carry on your journey. Or alternatively, simply remain on the I-87 until it merges with I-287, some 193 km (120 miles) away, in Hillburn.

Take that west and then immediately switch onto New Jersey 17 going south. Follow that to its conclusion in Rutherford, where you will switch to New Jersey 3 going east.

This will take you all the way to Union City, where you will make one final change, onto Route 495, and follow it through the Lincoln Tunnel and into New York City.

Best places to stop between Toronto and New York

A tale of two Capitals: from Toronto to Albany

One of the oldest cities in America, originally founded as a fur trading post in 1614, Albany has a population of less than 100,000, compared to NYC's 8.4 million, so it's is a place with a much slower pace and considerably fewer tourists.

With its historic buildings and vessels, dating all the way back to when the city was founded, Albany will fill your trip with a true sense of what the state of New York was like when the first settlers arrived. The beautiful State Capitol and the Schuyler Mansion are well worth a visit, as well as the museums which will help you learn about the legacy of this often overlooked city.

You can be sure of a great stay during your trip to Albany with a stopover at Staybridge Suites Albany Wolf Rd-Colonie Center, an IHG Hotel . A little outside the city center, this traditional style hotel boasts great sized rooms, and beautiful outdoor terrace and gardens, with heated indoor pool and hot tub to relax in after a busy day.

You are also just a short drive to many of the top attractions including Albany Institute of History Art and Capitol Building, with convenient on-site parking as an added bonus.

Chill out in Woodstock

With its bohemian heart and beautiful setting, Woodstock makes for a great final stop. A couple of hours away from New York, take some time here to slow down and relax - the town is a real contrast to the big city that awaits you.

While the legendary music festival of 1969 didn't actually end up here (it ended up with four venue changes, settling in Bethel, NY) you'll still catch an alternative vibe and musical heritage in Woodstock. Take a stroll down Tinker Street to explore its independently owned stores, or enjoy a meal in one of the town's excellent small eateries.

Engage with your creative side when you visit the town's galleries, live music venues and theatres - check ahead to see what's showing when you're in town. If you're planning on spending a longer in the area you could even sign up for a short course at Woodstock School of Art, though these often run across two weekends so they won't suit every road trip itinerary.

Nestled in the beautiful Catskills and with mile after mile of stunning scenery on hand, Woodstock is also a great base for exploring this wild area.

With this in mind, where better to stay than the fantastic Woodstock Way Hotel, where striking modern design connects perfectly with the natural surrounding s. With immaculately-presented cabins and rooms in a fabulous river-side setting right in the centre of Woodstock, you're perfectly located to explore the town.

While you're here we'd also recommend a walk over to KBD, the town's own Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. It's the perfect place to pause and reflect before you pick up the pace again and carry on towards the bustle of New York City.

Things to see on a road trip from Toronto to New York

At eight and a half hours, a road trip from Toronto to New York is a journey of a reasonable length, so you are going to want plenty to see along the way to keep it interesting.

  • Lake Ontario - A member of the legendary Great Lakes, it is the smallest of the group by area but still ranks as the 13th largest lake on Earth.
  • Niagara Falls - This collection of 3 waterfalls is one of the world's most popular natural attractions, and also an important hydroelectric plant. Reaching across the US-Canada border, you can enjoy the beautiful views or take an exhilarating boat trip out to the falls.

  • Rochester, New York - Recognised as a global centre for science, technology, research and development, this is a perfect stop for those interested in learning about the industrial evolution of America throughout the years.
  • Seneca Falls - A small town with historic significance, break your trip here to stretch your legs on a walk through the historic district or beside the water. Just don't expect to see a waterfall, despite the town's name.
  • Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge - An important location along the Atlantic Flyway, this beautiful, swampy, refuge is the perfect location to spot some rare and unusual species of birds.
  • Albany, New York - The capital city of New York state, it is one of the oldest and smallest state capitals in the country.
  • Zipline New York - One of the longest and fastest in the country, giving you a whole new perspective on the beautiful Catskills.
  • Harriman State Park - The second largest state park in New York, this stunning location features more than 320 km (200 miles) of hiking trails, surrounded by lakes, streams, beautiful views and an abundance of wildlife in every direction.
  • Karma Triyana Dharmachakra - Woodstock's Tibetan Buddhist monastery is open to visitors, either to take a tour or to join in with the daily practices.
  • Opus 40 Sculpture Park, Saugerties - A beautiful sculpture park in a stunning natural setting, with performance art and sculpture displayed in reclaimed quarries. Check opening dates before visiting.
  • Staatsburg State Historic Site - This impressive mansion with views of the Hudson and the Catskills will give you a glimpse of life in America's Gilded Age in the early 1900s.
  • Historic Huguenot Street, New Paltz - A museum built around the stone houses of French settlers, which tells their stories and those of Indigenous communities they lived alongside.

Best time to go on a road trip from Toronto to New York

Deciding on the perfect time to make a road trip from Toronto to New York is a tricky one, as it depends largely on what you are looking for from the trip.

New York's world-famous Christmas attractions can turn the city into a winter wonderland in December, when you'll be able to see the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, the Saks Fifth Avenue Light Show, or take a horse-drawn carriage through snow-covered Central Park.

However, you're likely to encounter snowy conditions in Toronto and upstate New York from December to March, meaning that some of the attractions we've recommended along the route won't be accessible. You'll also need to be prepared for driving in harsh conditions.

Waterfall at Niagara with snow covered ground and foliage

A lot of this route lends itself to a visit in the late spring or early fall - May, June and September. Although the state's location on the North Atlantic coast means rain can roll in at any time of year, temperatures at these times are in the mid-20s.

This means you'll be able to enjoy the many lakes, mountains and forests along the route, then stroll around New York City's famous parks and landmarks at your leisure. You'll also skip the crowds and high, humid temperatures that can make summer in the city less relaxing.
