Cape Town’s Bo-Kaap Neighborhood: The Complete Guide

cape town bo kaap tour

Located in between Cape Town city center and the foothills of Signal Hill, Bo-Kaap is named for the Afrikaans phrase meaning “above the Cape”. Today, it’s known as one of the most Instagrammable places in the country , thanks to its pastel-colored houses and picturesque cobbled streets. However, there’s much more to Bo-Kaap than its good looks. It’s also one of the oldest and most historic residential areas in Cape Town. Most of all, it’s synonymous with Islamic Cape Malay culture – evidence of which can be found throughout the area, from its halal restaurants to the haunting sound of the muezzin’s call to prayer.

Bo-Kaap’s Early History

The Bo-Kaap neighborhood was first developed in the 1760s by Dutch colonialist Jan de Waal, who built a series of small rental houses to provide accommodation for the city’s Cape Malay slaves. The Cape Malay people originated from the Dutch East Indies (including Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia), and were exiled by the Dutch to the Cape as slaves towards the end of the 17th century. Some of them were convicts or slaves in their home countries; but others were political prisoners from wealthy, influential backgrounds. Almost all of them practiced Islam as their religion.

According to legend, the rental terms of de Waal’s houses stipulated that their walls must be kept white. When slavery was abolished in 1834 and the Cape Malay slaves were able to purchase their homes, many of them chose to paint them in bright colors as an expression of their newfound freedom. Bo-Kaap (which was originally called Waalendorp) became known as the Malay Quarter, and Islamic traditions became an intrinsic part of the neighborhood’s heritage. It was also a flourishing cultural center, because many of the slaves were skilled artisans.

The District During Apartheid

During the apartheid era , Bo-Kaap was subject to the Group Areas Act of 1950, which enabled the government to segregate the population by declaring separate neighborhoods for each race or religion. Bo-Kaap was designated as a Muslims-only area, and people of other religions or ethnicities were forcibly removed. In fact, Bo-Kaap was the only area of Cape Town in which Cape Malay people were allowed to live. It was unique in that it was one of the few city center locations designated for non-whites: most other ethnicities were relocated to townships on the city’s outskirts.

Things to Do & See

There is plenty to see and do in Bo-Kaap. The streets themselves are famous for their eye-catching color scheme, and for their fine Cape Dutch and Cape Georgian architecture. The oldest existing building in Bo-Kaap was built by Jan de Waal in 1768, and now houses the Bo-Kaap Museum – an obvious starting place for any new visitor to the neighborhood. Furnished like the house of a wealthy 19th-century Cape Malay family, the museum offers an insight into the life of the early Cape Malay settlers; and an idea of the influence that their Islamic traditions have had on Cape Town’s art and culture.

The area’s Muslim heritage is also represented by its numerous mosques. Head to Dorp Street to visit Auwal Mosque, which dates back to 1794 (before religious freedom was granted in South Africa). It is the country’s oldest mosque, and home to a hand-written copy of the Quran created by Tuan Guru, the mosque’s first imam. Guru wrote the book from memory during his time as a political prisoner on Robben Island . His grave (and shrines to two other important Cape Malay imams) can be found in Bo-Kaap’s Tana Baru Cemetery, which was the first piece of land designated as a Muslim cemetery after religious freedom was granted in 1804.

Cape Malay Cuisine

After visiting the neighborhood’s historic sights, make sure to sample its famous Cape Malay cuisine – a unique blend of Middle Eastern, South East Asian and Dutch styles. Cape Malay cooking uses plenty of fruit and spices, and includes fragrant curries, rootis and samoosas, all of which can be purchased at several Bo-Kaap street stalls and restaurants. Two of the most authentic eating places are Bo-Kaap Kombuis and Biesmiellah , both of which serve staples like denningvleis and bobotie (the unofficial national dish of South Africa). For dessert, try a koeksister – a spiced, plaited donut cooked in syrup and sprinkled with coconut.

If you want to recreate the recipes you taste in Bo-Kaap at home, stock up on ingredients at the neighborhood’s biggest spice shop, Atlas Spices . Be aware that traditional Bo-Kaap restaurants like the ones listed above are halal and strictly alcohol-free. Wash your meal down with one of South Africa's signature non-alcoholic drinks , then head to a bar in another part of the city to try Cape Town’s famous wines .

How to Visit Bo-Kaap

Unlike some of Cape Town’s poorer areas, Bo-Kaap is safe to visit independently. It’s a five-minute walk from the city center, and a 10-minute drive from the V&A Waterfront (the city’s main tourist area). The easiest way to find yourself at the heart of Bo-Kaap is to walk along Wale Street to the Bo-Kaap Museum. After exploring the museum’s fascinating exhibits, spend an hour or two getting lost in the scenic side streets that surround the main thoroughfare. Before you go, consider purchasing this audio walking tour by Bo-Kaap local Shereen Habib. You can download it to your smartphone for just $3.99, and use it to locate and learn about the area’s top attractions.

Those that want the expertise of a real-life guide should join one of the city’s many Bo-Kaap walking tours. Free Walking Tours Cape Town offers a popular free walking tour (though you’ll want to bring cash to tip the guide). It departs twice daily from Motherland Coffee Company and visits Bo-Kaap highlights including Auwal Mosque, Biesmiellah and Atlas Spices. Some tours, like the one offered by Cape Fusion Tours , include a cooking course hosted by local women at their own homes. This is a great way to try your hand at Cape Malay cooking, and also to gain a behind-the-scenes glimpse of modern Islamic life in Cape Town.

Practical Advice & Information

Bo-Kaap Museum is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm Mondays through Saturdays, with the exception of certain public holidays. Expect to pay a R20 entrance fee for adults, and a R10 entrance fee for children aged six to 17. Kids under five go free. Tana Baru Cemetery is open from 9:00am to 6:00pm. If you would like to stay in the Bo-Kaap area, we recommend Rouge on Rose . Located a four-minute walk from the Bo-Kaap Museum, it's ranked as one of the best guesthouses in the city and offers spectacular Lion's Head views, flawless service and cooked-to-order breakfasts.

If you decide to explore Bo-Kaap independently, bear in mind that this neighborhood (like most areas of the city) is safest during daylight hours. If you plan on being there after dark, don't walk the streets by yourself – rather book a taxi or go with a group. Ladies should dress conservatively in Bo-Kaap, in line with Muslim custom. In particular, you will need to cover your chest, legs and shoulders if you plan on entering any of the area’s mosques, while a headscarf carried in your bag is also a good idea.

Guide to Visiting Bo Kaap: Cape Town’s Most Colourful Neighbourhood!

Last Updated on May 6, 2024 by thecapetownblog

Hannah in Bo Kaap

If you’ve ever googled Cape Town, the chances are that you’ve seen photos of Bo Kaap’s brightly-coloured cottages. So if you’re thinking about checking out the area, well, I don’t blame you!

As well as being aesthetically pleasing, Bo Kaap is actually Cape Town’s oldest surviving neighbourhood and is steeped in tradition and culture, with family-owned businesses on every corner. Visiting this Cape Malay enclave not only taught me a lot about the area itself, but the history of Cape Town as a whole.

I’ve lived in Cape Town for a few years now, and I love exploring the area. In fact, I always bring friends who come to visit, as I consider checking out Bo Kaap a real must-do! And now, I’m going to share all of my tips for visiting with you.

Quick note: this is a complete guide to Bo Kaap, so I’ve included an overview of its history and culture. However, you can click here to jump to the best things to do in Bo Kaap .

Where is Bo Kaap?

Bo Kaap

Bo Kaap is smack dab in the middle of Cape Town. It’s on the slopes of Signal Hill, right near the city centre, so it’s super easy to get to. In my experience, it only takes 15 minutes (maximum!) to get there from any of the city’s central neighbourhoods.

History of Bo Kaap

Where to begin.

Bo Kaap started out in 1760 when Dutch colonist Jan de Waal built some small houses in the area which he leased out to slaves. These slaves were mostly Muslims who came from the Dutch East Indies, which included Malaysia. Thus, they became known as “Cape Malay” people – a term that is still used today.

The area began to grow, and this only continued after the abolition of slavery in 1834. Although slavery had officially ended, people here were still poor and not really able to leave. Bo Kaap became even more established and was cemented as a quintessential part of the city’s fabric. To this day, the area remains very working-class, although it is now experiencing some gentrification.

Apartheid

When I took a tour of Bo Kaap, my guide told me that the area still exists because residents were allowed to remain here during apartheid. This was unusual because people in other areas, like District Six, were displaced and forced into informal settlements under the Group Areas Act. This act was introduced 1950 and forbade different racial and religious groups from co-existing. Since Bo Kaap had always been a Muslim enclave, it was designated a Muslim-only area and so most Cape Malay people were able to remain.

The Colourful Houses

cape town bo kaap tour

I’m just going to come right out and say it:

Nobody REALLY knows why the houses in Bo Kaap were originally painted.

Some people say it was to celebrate the end of slavery. The houses had to be white while they were being leased by slave owners, so when slaves were able to buy their own homes, people say that they painted them because they could.

I wouldn’t blame them, but others will insist that locals painted their houses to help distinguish their businesses from one another. When I took a tour, my guide said it started with a butcher, then a doctor caught on… and so on and so forth.

It’s also said that the houses were originally painted bright colours to celebrate Eid in the 1950s. Again, I’m not sure that this has been conclusively proven. Who knows, maybe the real reason is a mixture of all of the above!

What I do know, however, is that nowadays, the City of Cape Town funds these colourful façades. Since Cape Town enjoys a tremendous amount of sunshine, the paint fades and peels fast, so the tourism board pays homeowners to ensure Bo Kaap stays bright.

What to See and Do in Bo Kaap

Check out the colourful houses.

Bo Kaap’s brightly coloured houses are so eye-catching! Probably the most iconic one is the pink house that usually has a vintage blue car parked out front. It’s hard to miss as it’s right where two of Bo Kaap’s main streets (Rose and Wale) intersect, but you can get the exact location here .

I will say though, please do remember that Bo Kaap was not created for Instagram. These brightly coloured cottages are people’s homes and businesses, so be respectful. Try not to block doorways, give residents their personal space, and dress modestly.

If you’re all about the pictures, then I’m a fan of this photoshoot tour of Bo Kaap ! It’s run by three talented South African photographers who know all the best spots to snap photos without disturbing anyone.

Faeza’s Home Kitchen

cape town bo kaap tour

Cape Malay cuisine is absolutely delicious, and I recommend eating some while you’re in the area! When I took a tour of Bo Kaap, my guide recommended checking out Faeza’s Home Kitchen afterwards. My friend, Liam, and I shared their 3-course meal, which cost us about R200 for the whole thing. We got a roti, a delicious curry, and some koeksisters, which are fried pieces of dough soaked in syrup.

However, you can also take a Cape Malay cooking class at Faeza’s to really immerse yourself in the culture. I haven’t done this myself, but I know it’s a really popular tourist activity in Cape Town and I’ve heard from others that it’s a great experience. It costs R700 per person, which covers all ingredients, and lasts for about 4.5 hours. I would love to do this in the future because, after all, the best way to get to know Cape Malay cuisine is to try cooking it yourself – and having tasted Faeza’s food, I can safely say that you’ll be learning from the master.

Check out the art galleries

There are a couple of small, independent art galleries around Bo Kaap. Liam and I checked a few of them out after our tour ended, and they had some interesting pieces. I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge art lover, but I still thought the galleries were worth seeing!

Visit the Bo Kaap Museum

The Bo Kaap Museum is housed in one of the area’s oldest cottages, and tells the story of the neighbourhood and the plight of the Cape Malay people under colonialism and apartheid. It’s only R60 for international visitors (and R40 for South Africans) so it’s definitely worth checking out while you’re in the neighbourhood.

Grab lunch at Bo Kaap Deli

If you’re not quite up for a full, hearty meal at Faeza’s, why not grab lunch at the Bo Kaap Deli instead? This place is renowned in Cape Town because it combines a fun, modern vibe with delicious Cape Malay cuisine. They do an awesome Cape Malay brunch menu and their salads are so delicious, but on a hot day I don’t think you can beat their electric lemonade, which even has tapioca pearls in it!

Catch dinner and a show at Marco’s African Place

I know, I know – you’re probably thinking “Really? MORE food?”

But Marco’s African Place is about more than just food, although it is undoubtedly one of the best places in the city to chow down on African cuisine. It’s also known for its nightly music and dance shows, so if marimba bands, home-brewed beer, and Kudu and crocodile meat sound like your idea of a good time, don’t miss this place.

Oh, and did I mention? Marco was the first black restaurateur in Cape Town, so this place is a really important part of the city’s history, too.

Best Tours of Bo Kaap

Free walking tour of bo kaap .

cape town bo kaap tour

I really enjoyed the free walking tour of Bo Kaap that I took. It was run by Free Walking Tours Cape Town , and I didn’t even have to book. We just turned up at 2 pm in Parliament Square and looked for the green umbrellas with the company name! They go daily and there’s also one that leaves at 4:20 pm.

I had already lived in Cape Town for about a year by the time I did this tour, so although I already had a general idea of Bo Kaap’s history, it was great to dive deeper into it. Our guide did a really great job and so Liam and I were happy to leave a tip (because as we all know, “free” tours are in fact tip-based). I can’t remember how much we gave now, but I think it was about R100!

My former housemate, Marianne, now works for Free Walking Tours Cape Town, so if she’s your guide please tell her I say hello. She’s amazing.

Local-led small group tour

Bo Kaap houses

I’m all about the free walking tours, but the only downside is that the group sizes can get pretty big during the summer, especially in December and January. So if you’d prefer a small-group experience, I would recommend booking this tour , which has group sizes capped at 20.

Another thing that sets this tour apart in my eyes is that it’s led by a Bo Kaap local, Sedick, who grew up in the area and still lives here to this day. Hearing anecdotes from his childhood is so entertaining, and he also knows a lot not only about Bo Kaap’s history, but about the current issues the area is facing. He’s also really insightful about issues like gentrification and the impact of tourism on Bo Kaap (both the good and the bad!) But at the same time, he doesn’t make you feel guilty for being there as a tourist.

So basically, if you’d like to support the locals and hear their stories about the area they grew up in, I can’t recommend this tour enough! It runs three times per day, everyday except Sunday, and at R350, I think it’s really reasonably priced.

You can grab your spot on this local-led tour here!

Food tour

Faeza's home kitchen

Okay, so I mentioned that my friend and ex-housemate, Marianne, is a guide on the free walking tours but she also often leads this Cape Town food tour ! And while the food tour doesn’t focus exclusively on Bo Kaap, it visits several foodie hotspots in the area, including some of the ones I talked about above. Marianne really knows her stuff (trust me, I lived with her when she was doing her guiding exams!) and the tour includes so much food, as well as beer at Marco’s African Place and a glass of wine, of course – this is South Africa, after all!

After exploring Bo Kaap, the tour continues onto De Waterkant, which is my favourite neighbourhood in Cape Town. I used to live here and it’s home to so many cute eateries, as well as pastel-coloured buildings, cobbled streets, and bougainvillaea. It looks like a postcard, is what I’m trying to say!

I always say that the best way to get to know a place is through its stomach, and this tour is perfect for exactly that. It costs R1,785, including all food and drinks, and lasts for 4 hours, so it’s an ideal way to spend an afternoon in the Mother City.

Photoshoot experience

I mentioned this Bo Kaap photoshoot experience earlier, but I’m giving it the full breakdown now!

Basically, it’s an hour-long photoshoot led by South African photographers, who are all passionate about Cape Town and its history. They’ll take you to the most photogenic spots and capture you in your best light, then professionally edit the photos before sending them to you a few days later.

I always feel a bit silly doing photoshoots at first, but you soon get into it, and these guys really know how to put you at ease. If you’re in a group of less than 4 people, then you’ll probably be paired up with another party for the shoot, so this can also be a fun way to make some new friends. Don’t worry, you’ll still get tons of amazing photos – in fact, they usually send 35-50, and you get a Polaroid picture to keep (and shake – sorry, couldn’t resist).

The tour usually costs R1,400, and I think it’s an awesome way to support Cape Town creatives, while ensuring that you get some absolutely bomb photos that will fill your ex with regret.

Self-guided audio tour

I like audio tours and all but sometimes they feel a bit… impersonal?

Well, this one is the exception to the rule because it’s narrated by a local resident, Shereen Habib. The route covers Bo Kaap pretty comprehensively and dives deep into the area’s history. Shereen’s commentary and personal anecdotes will have you laughing, and I think it really helps you to feel connected with the area. Plus, for R105, it’s a wallet-friendly way to explore the area.

After you purchase the tour, you’ll get to download the app for free, which gives you offline access to the audio tour. It works through GPS, so it doesn’t matter if you lose signal (not that you’re likely to in Bo Kaap) or run out of data.

You can grab your audio tour here!

Is Bo Kaap safe?

Mostly! During the day, you should be fine walking around Bo Kaap. Just employ common sense: don’t wave your phone and wallet around, and don’t wear a super ostentatious gold chain or anything like that. And if you feel worried, joining a guided tour is a safe bet as there’s safety in numbers, and the guides know the area very well.

I wouldn’t recommend walking around after dark, though. If you go to Marco’s for dinner, for example, I would recommend Ubering there and back rather than walking.

Can I stay in Bo Kaap?

Yes, you can! However, there aren’t THAT many options. A lot of places say they’re in Bo Kaap but are actually in nearby areas like the CBD or Dewaterkant. I think Dewaterkant is amazing, but if you want to stay IN Bo Kaap itself then I think your best bet is La Rose B&B . It’s colourful and cosy, with friendly staff, and it’s designed to be a home away from home. They do delicious, communal breakfasts every morning so this is a great way for solo travellers or couples to make friends in Cape Town!

Check out rates and book your stay at La Rose B&B here, with free cancellation up to a month in advance!

However, I always recommend that travellers stay in De Waterkant , which is just over the road from Bo Kaap. I mean this literally – Strand Street divides the two neighbourhoods!

Home Suites hotel De Waterkant

De Waterkant is generally quieter than Bo Kaap, and lots of streets here have security guards on patrol, which really helped me to feel safe when I lived here. Plus, the houses here are also colourful, although they’re more of the pastel variety, whereas in Bo Kaap the cottages are bright and eye-catching. The last time I needed a hotel in Cape Town, I opted for Home Suites De Waterkant and had a fantastic stay, although there are plenty of other great options .

Thanks so much for reading this blog post! I hope that you love exploring the colourful enclave of Bo Kaap as much as I did. And if you need help planning your other adventures in Cape Town, check out the following…

Walking Tour of Bo-Kaap in Cape Town

If there's one place that I must visit every time I go to Cape Town , it's the Bo-Kaap. I'm ever so fascinated by this historic, colourful district, which is always a sight for sore eyes. On my most recent trip to the Mother City, I did a walking tour in the Bo-Kaap with  Walk Cape Town  and learnt so much more about the area.

Bo-Kaap

Guided walking tours to the Bo-Kaap leave from the City Sightseeing Bus offices in Long Street daily. That’s where we met our local guide, Sheldon, and began the tour. Our group of about a dozen people were from Nigeria, Germany and Switzerland. There were also other South Africans like us.

Bo-Kaap Houses

Tourists in Bo-Kaap

En route, Sheldon pointed out the Jan De Waal house on Bree Street. Originally from Amsterdam, Jan who was a church sexton, built the first houses in the Bo-Kaap which he subsequently rented out to the slaves. They were known as huurhuisies (rental houses).

Cape Heritage Hotel

Cape Heritage Hotel

We then stepped into the Cape Heritage Hotel located in Heritage Square. Historic features such as original walls and windows can still be seen in the hotel, alongside murals depicting the history of the square and Cape Town. The hotel houses the Sisonke Gallery which was created to promote upcoming young artists, as well as some eateries and shops. The central courtyard is shaded by South Africa’s oldest grapevine which was planted in 1771 and still bears fruit!

From there, we proceeded to the Bo-Kaap, walking up the cobbled slopes while Sheldon told us about the history, culture and traditions of the area, as he pointed out the best photo spots.

Bo-Kaap

Lying on the lower slopes of Signal Hill, the name Bo-Kaap means “above the Cape”. It was previously known as the Malay Quarter. Unlike the multi-coloured houses that line its narrow streets, attracting tourists and photographers from far and wide, the Bo-Kaap has a somewhat dark history.

Bo-Kaap Houses

Bo-Kaap Houses

It was first established in 1760 as a slave quarter, and many of the current residents are descendants of these slaves, who were brought to the Cape by the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries from Malaysia, Indonesia, as well as other Asian and African countries. There were traders, religious scholars, skilled craftsmen, artisans and convicts too. They brought their religion, cuisine, culture and language with them. I realised this to a great extent when I visited Malaysia and heard words being used that I normally associate with the Cape Malay community.

Bo-Kaap House

Bo-Kaap House

Most of the Bo-Kaap houses were built before 1860 and reflect a mixture of Cape Dutch and Cape Georgian architectural styles. The oldest house there still in its original form, is now home to the Bo Kaap Museum where you can learn more about the history of the area. It was built by Jan de Waal in 1768.

The houses of the Bo-Kaap are painted in vivid shades of vibrant colours, making the Bo-Kaap one of the main attractions in Cape Town, mainly due to its Instagrammability . There are several theories about the origins of the rainbow colours but the most popular one seems to be that residents were previously restricted in the colours they were allowed to use and when this rule was finally lifted they painted their houses in bright, cheerful colours to express their joy and newly-found freedom. They often re-paint their houses in celebration of Eid or other special occasions, and usually after consulting with their neighbours, to avoid clashes.

Bo-Kaap Houses

There are currently no restrictions on colours. Sheldon said that he asked one of the residents why he painted his house dark green, and he responded that it was because it was the colour of the Springboks (South Africa’s national rugby team). Another resident painted her house purple because it was the colour of royalty.

In between the streets of colourful houses, you will see walls with brightly painted murals.

Cape Malay cuisine is unique and includes delicacies like koeksisters, boboties and bredies. Many of the residents offer cooking experiences in their homes. Faeeza’s Home Kitchen is one of them. Faeeza also has a tea garden which has hosted celebrities like Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Roger Federer. Other popular local eateries are Biesmiellah Restaurant, Bo-Kaap Kombuis, and Against The Grain.

The Bo-Kaap is predominantly Muslim and there are 10 mosques there, the oldest being the Auwal (First) Mosque which was built in 1794. Inside the mosque, there is a Quran handwritten from memory by Tuan Guru , an Indonesian prince who was incarcerated on Robben Island long before Nelson Mandela . He was the first imam of the mosque. Built in 1820, the Palm Tree Mosque is the second oldest Mosque in the Bo Kaap. The 5 palm trees outside the mosque represent the 5 pillars of Islam.

Mosques in Bo-Kaap

Palm Tree Mosque

Recently, Bo-Kaap residents have been fighting against gentrification, price hikes and evictions, which is threatening the heritage of the area.

We walked back to the City Sightseeing offices, after a thought-provoking walk. The tours are free but tipping is recommended. We’ve done them in several countries and they’re well worth the tip, as the tours are normally given by local guides with in-depth knowledge and inside information about the area. I would highly recommend doing the City Sightseeing Bus tour to see the rest of the city.

Where to stay in the Bo Kaap

If you want a luxury stay in the Bo-Kaap, the Hyatt Regency Cape Town is ideally located at the beginning of the Bo-Kaap district, close enough for one to immerse oneself in the culture and colour of the neighbourhood but not enough to encroach on its ambience.

If you’re looking for a vibrant and colorful cultural experience in Cape Town, Bokaap is the place to be. This vibrant neighborhood in the heart of Cape Town is teeming with history, culture, and people who are proud of their heritage. So, what exactly is Bokaap, and why should you visit?

Bokaap is a historically Muslim neighborhood that dates back to the 1700s. It is famous for its brightly painted houses in shades of pink, purple, blue, and yellow, which are a sight to behold. The houses have been restored to their former glory, and the facades are adorned with wrought iron balconies, ornate gables, and decorative street art.

One of the highlights of visiting Bokaap is tasting traditional Cape Malay cuisine. The Cape Malay community, with roots in Southeast Asia, brought with them a culinary tradition that was heavily influenced by the Dutch, Indian, and African cultures. You can find dishes like bobotie, Malay curries, and samoosas on almost every corner. Don’t miss out on the chance to try koeksisters, a sweet pastry that will have your taste buds dancing.

Besides the food, Bokaap is also a hub for culture and entertainment. You can attend a live music show or visit one of the many art galleries that showcase local talent. The streets are alive with color and energy, and you’ll find yourself never running out of things to do.

If history is your thing, then Bokaap definitely won’t disappoint you. The neighborhood is home to several museums and historical sites that tell the story of its past. Visit the Bo-Kaap Museum to learn more about the Cape Malay community’s history and heritage. You can also visit the Auwal Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in South Africa, where you’ll learn about the role of Islam in shaping the neighborhood’s identity.

The best way to experience Bokaap is to take a walking tour. Several groups offer guided tours that will take you through the streets while providing an insight into the community’s lifestyle, history, and traditions. You’ll be able to meet locals, listen to their stories, and experience the warmth and hospitality of the people. Don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, as the streets are cobbled and hilly.

In conclusion, Bokaap is a must-visit destination in Cape Town for anyone interested in history, culture, food, or art. The neighborhood’s vibrant colors, friendly people, and rich culture will make your visit unforgettable. Don’t forget to bring your camera and capture the beauty of this hidden gem.

Tips for Visiting Cape Town Attractions

Embarking on a journey to Cape Town is a thrilling adventure, and to make your experience truly unforgettable, we’ve curated a list of essential tips for navigating the city’s most iconic attractions with ease and enjoyment.

Best Time To Visit Cape Town

Envision setting forth on a tranquil adventure to Cape Town, a city where each season unveils a new facet of its alluring beauty. Your perfect moment to visit? It intricately depends on your desires and the experiences you seek in this vibrant metropolis.

From our perspective, the prime time to immerse yourself in the wonders of Cape Town spans from December to April, the summer months in the southern hemisphere.

However, it might be wise to sidestep the peak periods of Christmas and New Year to truly enjoy the city’s essence without the hustle and bustle. January, a bustling and pricey month, could also be avoided to ensure a serene and budget-friendly experience.

February emerges as the golden period, where the summer vibrancy is still palpable, yet the city gradually transitions out of its peak season.

Following suit, March and April present themselves as excellent choices, offering splendid weather and a respite from the crowds, allowing you to explore Cape Town in its full glory but with tranquility.

How To Get To Cape Town

Navigating your way to the heart of Cape Town is a breeze, with several convenient options at your disposal. The Cape Town International Airport (CPT), situated approximately 20 km from the bustling city center, serves as your gateway to this vibrant city.

Depending on your exact destination within Cape Town, the journey from the airport might extend by 30 minutes, so plan accordingly. While various modes of transportation are available, many visitors find Uber the most economical and convenient choice.

Not only is it a popular service in the area, but it also offers affordability that is hard to beat – a trip from the picturesque Sea Point to the airport, for instance, generally costs around R237, roughly equivalent to $13 USD.

If you prefer steering the wheel yourself, renting a car for your stay is a fantastic option, allowing you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace.

How To Get Around Cape Town

Navigating through the picturesque landscapes and vibrant neighborhoods of Cape Town is a vital part of your adventure. Here, we explore the most convenient and popular modes of transportation that the city has to offer:

Uber/Rideshare Apps

In Cape Town, rideshare apps like Uber have become a popular choice for locals and tourists. These apps offer a safe, reliable, and affordable way to traverse the city without the hassle of finding parking spaces in busy areas.

Download the app on your smartphone, and you’ll have quick access to rides wherever you are in the city.

Get a Rental Car

Renting a car is a fantastic option for those who prefer more autonomy in their travels. It not only allows you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace but also makes it easier to visit the picturesque locales that are off the beaten path. This will give you access to more places to see in Cape Town in a shorter time.

I recommend using Discover Cars to scout for the best deals. This platform compares prices from various rental car agencies in the area, generally helping you save substantially in the long run.

Public Bus System

Taking the public bus is an excellent choice if you want to immerse yourself in the local culture. Cape Town boasts a well-maintained and efficient bus system connecting all major city parts.

It’s not only a cost-effective way to get around but also gives you a chance to experience the city like a local, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere and perhaps discovering some hidden gems along the way.

Acquaint yourself with the different routes and schedules to maximize this transportation option.

Where To Stay in Cape Town

Embarking on a journey to the expansive city of Cape Town can initially seem overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure about the best locales to settle in. But fret not; I’m here to guide you through the prime neighborhoods that have enriched my visits to this vibrant city.

This locale often evokes a sense of affordability akin to a budget-friendly San Diego for visitors.

It stands out as a secure area in contrast to the bustling Central Business District (CBD), offering numerous dining options and a stunning seaside promenade that eliminates the need for a vehicle.

It has become my preferred destination for leisurely summer getaways lasting approximately three months.

Central Business District/Kloof:

Positioned east of Signal Hill, extending around the famous Kloof Street towards Lion’s Head, this region is a hub for modern eateries, bars, and lively nightlife.

Despite its vibrant atmosphere, be prepared for a denser urban setting, slightly removed from the coastal charm. It stands as the premier choice for those seeking an energetic nightlife.

Nestled between the hills and the sea, Camps Bay offers a luxurious retreat with a picturesque backdrop, albeit at a higher price range.

While it houses a few establishments, anticipate a longer commute, especially during peak hours, to reach the CBD for a wider variety of amenities. It’s the ultimate destination for those yearning for a tranquil seaside retreat away from the urban hustle.

Green Point:

Situated between Sea Point and the Waterfront, this residential enclave is renowned for its lush surroundings, featuring numerous public parks and the iconic Cape Town stadium. It is an excellent base for digital nomads or those seeking a homely atmosphere.

Dewaterkant/V&A Waterfront:

This area is a hotspot for tourists and is close to the vibrant activities at the V&A Waterfront. While there might be better choices for extended stays, particularly for digital nomads, it offers excellent walkability, making it a favorite for short-term vacationers.

I have meticulously selected the top 4 hotels in Cape Town, South Africa, each offering a unique blend of luxury, comfort, and picturesque views, promising an unforgettable stay.
