Cayman Crystal Caves Adventure

Your trip will begin with a drive along the South Sound where you will get a glimpse of the luxurious houses and the Old-Style Cayman homes & pass through the district of Bodden Town, the first capital of Grand Cayman. Arrive at the lush tropical forest where 3 hidden gems of caves can be found. After a short briefing your guide will lead you down to the first cave. These caves are believed to be the past hideouts of pirates. Inside you will have the chance to take photos and witness within these cool rooms spectacular formation of stalagmites and stalactites. Amaze at the crystal structures that were formed 100s of years ago and why they are called Crystal Caves. Be quick to spot some wildlife like birds, iguanas, and fruit bats inside the caves. Although new, this attraction already earned a must-see recommendation from both locals and tourists alike.

Editor's Comments

If you want to get away from the cruise terminal and see a bit of Grand Cayman without renting your own vehicle, an island tour will be your cheapest option. Although a private taxi tour will cost more, the experience is almost always better. Keep in mind that renting your own vehicle and exploring on your own is in the same relative price range as a tour.

About Cayman

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory and as such English is the official language and people drive on the left. The Islands are on Eastern Standard Time (or GMT -5) however daylight savings are not observed. The currency is the Cayman Islands (CI) dollar. Although US dollars are accepted island-wide, change will always be given in CI$. The exchange rate is fixed to the US dollar: CI$1 is US$1.25 or US$1 to CI$0.80. Banks are open 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and there are plenty of ATMs in George Town and across the island.

Getting Around

There are plenty of ways to get around Grand Cayman including some inexpensive options. Whilst it can feel a bit overwhelming when you arrive as the George Town port is bustling with activity, the information below should help you make the best choice for your needs.

How you get around will largely depending on the amount of time you have and how much you'd like to spend. Make sure to think about the logistics of your day in Grand Cayman in relation to all the activities you'd like to do.

  • Walking: If you intend to stay in the George Town area then you will be able to get around on foot with no problems. Check out our online maps of Cayman or pick up a copy of Explore magazine which you’ll find in racks located around George Town and across the island as it has excellent maps of the George Town area with shops, restaurants and historical sites clearly marked.
  • Taxi : Taxi fares are based charged per person and are fixed by the government, although it is worth confirming the price before you set off. There will be plenty of taxis waiting at the port when your ship docks. Taxis look like mini vans and drivers prefer to have a minimum of four passengers to make it worth their while.
  • Bus : Buses are a very cost effective way to get around, most journeys are between CI$1-CI$3. Buses look like mini vans - you can hail one by waving your hand when they toot at you. The bus depot is next to the library in George Town (across from Heroes Square fountain). When you board tell the driver where you would like to go and usually you can be dropped off outside the door. Click here for more information on bus routes in Cayman .
  • Rental Car : To make the most of your time in port it is worth considering renting a car to give you the flexibility to see what you want at your own pace. Car rental agencies offer one-day prices for cruise ship passengers and will meet you at the port. The island is small and easy to navigate so you won’t need to worry about wasting time getting lost. Some recommended car rental agencies in Cayman include Go Cayman Car Rental and Economy & Discount Car Rentals .

My Favorite Cruise Ports

M y favorite cruises are those with ports of call in the Caribbean islands. While you might think that this Miami girl would want a change of scenery when she travels, that isn't the case.

I love the tropics, I love the sunshine and the smell of salt water in the air...as the saying goes, "If it's not broken, don't fix it." When I begin planning a cruise, I always look through the ports of call to ensure that at least one of my favorite ports is included in the itinerary.

While I do love discovering new places, there are certain Caribbean islands that are quite expensive to travel to from Miami via air, so spending a day there on a port of call is the perfect solution!

Prepare to experience a serious case of Wanderlust, because today we'll be talking about My Favorite Cruise Ports!

Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas

Half Moon Cay is a private island owned by Carnival Cruise Line and is only accessible via a port of call. It's really the perfect spot; you can spend the day on the beach, eat at the restaurant on the island, have a few tropical cocktails...and charge it all to your stateroom card!

As it's a private island run by Carnival Cruise Line, you can pay for everything with your Sign and Sail card.

When you arrive, you'll find the most picturesque Caribbean waters, a palm-tree lined beach and the friendliest people you'll ever meet!

I love the Bahamas, and Half Moon Cay is no different in that everyone embraces the spirit of hospitality and friendliness.

You can book an excursion to go horseback riding, snorkeling, or a number of other exciting water sports, but you will find that you can enjoy the day just as well by lounging on the beach and soaking up the rays.

You'll find children and adults alike busying themselves building sandcastles - the last time I was there, the ship had even organized an island-wide sandcastle-building contest!

Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos

I've written about my love of Turks and Caicos before, but it bears repeating: Grand Turk is one of the most beautiful ports of call I've ever seen.

There's just something about the atmosphere in Grand Turk: the people are friendly, the water is gorgeous and there are so many things to do right at the port that you don't even need to book a shore excursion to have an awesome time!

There are plenty of beach chairs, there are cabanas for rent, there are name-brand restaurants, a huge pool and water slide, as well as an area of duty free shopping and places to pick up trinkets and souvenirs.

Of course, if you love the water and want to book a shore excursion, Grand Turk is the place to do it! There are so many options when it comes to shore excursions, but my favorite is snorkeling! One of the best snorkeling trips of my life was a shore excursion in Grand Turk.

That trip is actually what prompted me to invest in waterproof camera equipment; the experience we had underwater was so amazing that it just about broke my heart not to be able to share it through photos when we came home.

Grand Turk is definitely on my "must go snorkeling there again" list!

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

I have two great loves in my life: the water and animals. One of my favorite cruise ports offers both of these in abundance: Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. On my last visit to Grand Cayman, I booked a Carnival Cruise Line shore excursion to visit the Turtle Farm and Stingray City.

I was not disappointed! It's one thing to see marine life in the wild, but it's another entirely exciting experience to get up close and personal with some of your favorite sea creatures!

At the Turtle Farm, you walk through a guided tour to learn about their conservation efforts and then have the option of snorkeling with sea turtles or lounging at their pool or water park.

You can touch the baby sea turtles, feed them - it's really a fun experience for nature loving adults as well as children.

Stingray City was by far one of the best experiences I have had on a cruise. Your tour operator will take you out to "Stingray City," an area off shore where stingrays tend to congregate to feed.

After giving you a lesson in safety, your tour operator will allow you to get into the water with them!

It is really quite amazing how many stingrays appear in this area - at one point I counted ten different stingrays!

Family’s $15k carnival cruise vacation canceled just 2 days prior, without their knowledge, after sharing booking number on facebook.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Kentucky family’s $15,000 Carnival Cruise vacation they had been planning for a year was canceled just two days before the ship was set to sail after they accidentally shared their booking number online in a case of identity theft.

Tiffany Banks was devastated to learn that her trip aboard the Carnival Celebration ship with her husband and their four kids was canceled without her knowledge the day before the family was going to fly to Florida to leave on the boat.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

Tiffany Banks

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship’s largest room — the Excel Presidential Suite — through the online system.

The mom and nurse practitioner said she went into “a full-blown panic” and she and her four kids were all in tears.

“We have nearly $15,000 tied up in for this vacation including excursions. The room itself was I think $12,000 or $13,000, and then we’ve got a few grand tied up in excursions, and actually with almost $2,000 for flights,” she said in a May 12 TikTok video.

Banks said she never canceled the trip and wondered if it was a system glitch.

Carnival said the room they had booked was now reserved by another customer and offered the family two interior rooms — the cheapest on the ship — instead, but the mom did not feel it was an adequate replacement.

Carnival also refused to offer a full refund as its cancellation policy states that no money will be returned within 15 days of the cruise date.

Banks said in a series of TikTok videos that she had no idea their vacation, for which they had already paid in full, was trashed until she got an email about off-ship excursion cancellations and called to investigate.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyway, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

They instead stayed at an Airbnb in the Sunshine State, hoping to make the best of their change of plans while the mom shared frustrating updates on TikTok.

In one clip, she responded to “haters” who accused her of hiding things or not sharing the full story.

“I’m an open book. I talk too much. I give out too much information — that’s just me naturally,” she said in remarks that would become an ironic prediction of what was to come in the saga.

A Carnival customer service representative told her that she had canceled her $12,000 reservation for the ship's largest room -- the Excel Presidential Suite -- through the online system.

A few days later, Carnival called Banks back with an explanation of how her long-awaited cruise trip was canned.

The cruise line told Banks that she was the “victim of a form of identity theft” but that there was no security breach on Carnival’s part, according to a recording of the call she shared on TikTok.

Banks and her husband accidentally shared their cruise booking reference number when posting a screenshot of an email with the countdown to their vacation on Facebook a few weeks out, according to the clip.

The family flew to Miami and tried to board the ship anyways, hoping for a last-minute solution, but were unable to get on and the ship sailed off without them, Banks said in a teary follow-up video.

The same day they posted the booking number on Facebook, someone created an online Carnival account and added the number to their profile.

Then, 48 hours before the cruise sail date, the person canceled the family’s entire cabin booking, the Carnival rep told Banks in the recording.

Banks said Carnival told her that it believes the IP address of the person who canceled was in British Columbia but it was unable to get an identity of the fraudster.

The company offered her future cruise credit for $10,404 contingent on the mom posting on social media “something to the effect of Carnival has now resolved the issue.”

But Banks said she wasn’t interested and questioned the ease with which someone was able to take over her booking with no verification process.

“We’re not sailing with Carnival ever again,” she said.

The Post reached out to Carnival but did not immediately receive a response.
