Premiere: Cathedral Bells Debut New Single “Spiral”

New ep out june 21st via spirit goth.

Last year, Orlando-based outfit Cathedral Bells returned with their third full-length album, Everything At Once , drawing on layered and evocative strains of dream pop and shoegaze. The record came soon after their 2021 effort, Ether , and their 2020 debut, Velvet Spirit . The band are planning to keep up that momentum with the release of another new EP later this year, arriving via Spirit Goth Records on June 21st. Today, they’re sharing the first taste of the forthcoming record with the EP’s lead single, “Spiral,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“Spiral” finds the band once again exploring lush and airy heights, with lead singer Matt Messore’s vocals immersed in jangly guitars and energetic drum work. Rather than the vocals rising and floating unmoored above the instrumentation, they instead melt into the melodies, forming a lush haze of melancholic tones. The results are at turns both decadent and desolate, letting the instrumentation shine with a gentle dream pop glimmer as the lyrics explore a dark descent: “Down the rabbit hole again / It’s too late to turn back / Been this way before / Went into a spiral / Nothing else to believe / So it goes in a whirl / Down to the bottom / This is right where I belong.”

Messore says of the track, “‘Spiral’ is about continuously getting back into a rut and not seeing through the other side. Sometimes being at the very bottom is where you get the best perspective on your life.”

Check out the song below. The band’s new EP is due out on June 21st via Spirit Goth. Accompanying the track, the band are also announcing a series of upcoming tour dates. Check them out below as well.

Stations of the Cross

thomas hawk stations

The stations combine elements of traditional iconography and American Southwestern coloration within a postmodern style. In developing each scene, the artist uses flowers, animals and various symbolic elements to draw out its meaning and significance. The frames of the stations were carved and installed in 1918 by William F. Ross and Company of East Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Blessed Sacrament Chapel and Tabernacle

Tabernacle

The brass tabernacle proper is in the shape of a building and is inspired by the design of the north end of the cathedral exterior.

At the north end of the Blessed Sacrament chapel is the tomb of the Right Reverend Lawrence Scanlan, the fist bishop of Salt Lake, under whose leadership the Cathedral was built. The tomb was adapted from the high altar used in the Cathedral from 1918-1965.

Directly in the center of the chapel is the reliquary of St. Mary Magdalen, patroness of the Cathedral. The reliquary rests on the tomb of Bishop Scanlan.

The St. Joseph Chapel on the west side has three carved nativity scenes depicting the annunciation to the Shepherds, the birth of Christ and the Adoration of the Magi. The carved figures are those of St. Nicholas Toletino (left top); St. Anthony the Great (left center); St. James the Great (left bottom); St. Martin (right top); St. Dominic (right center); and St. Sylvester (right bottom).

Over the Lady Chapel stands a prominent statue of St. Peter; and over the St. Joseph Chapel is one of St. Paul, both carved by Franz Aretz of Pittsburgh.

Wood Carvings

Wood carving mural

Wood carvings in the Cathedral were completed by famous sculptors. Those in the reredos are by Johann Kirchmayer, considered the best wood carver in the United States. The linen folds on his carvings are a characteristic trademark of Kirchmayer. Above the main altar on each side of the picture of Mary Magdalene, the Kirchmayer statues represent founders of religious orders: on the east, Benedict, Clare and Dominic; and, on the west, Ignatius of Loyola, Terese of Avilla and Francis of Assisi. Several sculptors in the same family worked on the Cathedral and one father and son pair regretted not having anyplace to leave their signature. So the father and son each took a block of wood and facing one another, carved the likeness of the other. They then affixed these two carvings to the sedilla (seat or bench for presiders at Mass), which now serves as the ambry (place of reservation for the holy oils). The carvings remain a fitting signature to the ingenuity and talent of these sculptors.

Murals in Sanctuary

Madeleine West Mural of Saints 1

The left mural depicts prominent Christian figures (St. Joan of Arc, St. Venatius, St. John the Baptist, St. Gregory, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Agnes, St. Pascal Baylon, St. Jerome. St. Helena, St. Stephen), and the right mural depicts Old Testament figures (Adam and Eve, Isaiah, Ester, Ruth, Melchizedek, Moses, David, St. Anne, Judith).

The mural in the west transept is of the woman (traditionally identified as Mary Magdalene) washing the feet of Jesus. In the east transept there is portrayed the appearance of Jesus to Mary Magdalene following the Resurrection.

The crossing over the altar contains panels of angels, as do the upper regions of the vaulting throughout the Cathedral. The coats of arms of the eight bishops of the diocese are also found in the walls of the transepts.

The Striking blue and starred ceiling over the Blessed Sacrament chapel signifies the vault of heaven. Also painted by Felix Lieftuchter, it represents the influence of modern art on the artist's work.

Gallery Organ

thomas hawk organ

By the mid 1980's, this organ had come to the end of its natural life and was replaced in 1992 by a new 77/79 rank mechanical action English-style organ built by Kenneth Jones and Associates of Bray, Ireland.

The organ, which has 4,066 pipes, stands in a Gothic case designed to match the woodwork installed in the Comes interior of 1918.

A notable element of the organ is the Fanfare Trumpet that extends from the front of the choir gallery. The organ serves both liturgical and concert purposes.

Stained Glass Windows

untitled 6169152

The windows on the east side (from front to back), beginning with the large east transept window, depict the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary (The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Assumption of Mary, and The Crowning of Mary as Queen of Heaven). The Resurrection window also contains a medallion of Christ appearing to St. Mary Magdalen. Around this scene are (clockwise from the top) St. Farancis de Sales, St. Agnes, St. Stephen, St, Ignatius, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Bernard, St. Vincent de Paul, and St. Monica.

The two windows in the Blessed Sacrament chapel were designed by George W. Sotter of Pittsburgh in 1918 and display images of the twelve apostles. These windows exhibit a distinctly different style of stained glass from that in the body of the church. At the rear of the Cathedral above the organ is the great Rose Window depicting St. Cecilia, patroness of music, surrounded by angels with musical instruments.

Gothic Interior of Cathedral

Madeleine interior V

The second interior was created under the leadership of Joseph S. Glass, who became the second Bishop of Salt Lake City in 1915. A man of strong artistic sensibility, Bishop Glass undertook a thorough reconstruction of the art and furnishings, inspired by the Spanish gothic art of the late Middle Ages. The colorful murals in the sanctuary and transepts were added at that time, as was the ornate and dramatic coloration evident throughout the building. This interior was completed before Christmas, 1918.

Under the leadership of William K. Weigand, seventh Bishop of Salt Lake City (1980-1994), the restoration of the second interior, which had suffered the effects of dirt and pollution, was planned and executed. This included the renovation of the liturgical elements of the Cathedral to bring them into conformity with he liturgical reforms that followed Vatican Council II. It was completed in 1993.

Cathedral Exterior

thomas hawk ext

The Cathedral's Romanesque exterior, composed of Utah sandstone, remains substantially the same today as it was upon completion in 1909. Exceptions are the removal of the original stained glass windows in the sanctuary and the addition of a tympanum over the main doors.

Between 1975 and 1980, under the leadership of Joseph Lennox Federal, sixth Bishop of Salt Lake City, exterior renovations took place, including a new copper roof and work to restore and preserve the porous sandstone exterior from further erosion. The gargoyles were also replaced at that time.

Things To Do

Lifestyle | take a hidden tour of grace cathedral, san francisco’s gothic masterpiece, secret passageways and ancient artifacts are the stars of new “behind-the-scenes” tours of the famous church..

cathedral bells tour

It’s a blustery spring afternoon in San Francisco, and we are gathered for one of the first-ever behind the scenes tours of that Gothic wonder, Grace Cathedral .

The seat of the Episcopal Diocese of California – and it holds the literal seat of its bishop, more on that in a bit – the cathedral is about two-thirds the size of Notre-Dame. With a similar Gothic Revival-style architecture with Northern French influence, it gives Parisian visitors deja vu , our guide says.

It may look like a grand flourish sitting atop Nob Hill, but the cathedral is still under construction — as you’ll discover now that these tours have opened to the public. Built in 1862, the original structure was destroyed during the 1906 earthquake and ensuing fire. Construction began on the current cathedral in 1927.

Today, the vaulting near the ceiling is unfinished and some statue niches remain empty. “It has been said that a great cathedral is never finished, words that echo the unfinished work of the Spirit,” says Julie Knight, director of cultural membership and visitor experience. Grace will one day be completed, but in the meantime it holds all sorts of neat fundraising activities. There are concerts devoted to the music of Nintendo and Hayao Miyazaki movies , yoga atop its labyrinths, sound baths and now, architectural tours like this new exploration of historic rooms, hidden passageways and ancient artifacts.

A view of the altar of the Chapel of Grace which was made in 1521 A.D. shown during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Our guide today is Kenn Sparks who, with a trimmed beard and rumbling basso, has the presence of an Orson Welles.

We stand in the cavernous central hall of the cathedral, which has massive organ pipes in front and also in back. If it didn’t, there’d be a quarter-second sound delay, and the front part of the congregation would be singing earlier than the back rows – presumably annoying god.

Waterfalls of peacock-colored stained glass filter in natural light. There are nearly 7,300 square feet of stained glass in the building, depicting more than 1,100 famous figures from Adam and Eve up to Albert Einstein.

Tour group visitor Kelly Huibregtse, of San Francisco, stands on a balcony overlooking the indoor labyrinth during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Up on a mezzanine is what looks like a child’s toy piano. If a child actually played it, though, the results might cause a public emergency. The keys link to dozens of bells in the tower, including a six-ton one that rings the hours. The bells clang to celebrate World Series and Super Bowl wins and other commemorations. Sometimes after service, musicians like to noodle on the keyboard, playing popular songs like “Over the Rainbow” and “I Left my Heart in San Francisco.”

We enter an ambulatory or hidden passageway located behind the altar. Clergy use this shadowy hallway during services to scurry from one side of the church to the other. A number of beautiful stained-glass windows point toward the Anglican Churches of the Pacific Basin, from New Zealand to Taiwan to Japan.

Now we’re inside the vestry, which is paneled entirely in ornate walnut and smells like a classy antique shop. This is where the California bishop (currently Marc Handley Andrus) keeps a private camp to pray and store liturgical vestments. We observe a bible open to Ezekiel: 35 (“I lay your towns in ruins; you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the LORD”) and run our fingers through the bishop’s cloaks – not sure if his eminence would approve of this, but he’s not here right now. The vestments are all hand-sewn, and a member of our group jokes she has a friend who became a bishop “only for the clothes.”

A view of the bishop's vestry seen during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Next up is the Chapel of Grace. This small chapel is normally closed and has Spanish-style wrought-iron gates barring passage from the outside. William Randolph Hearst’s body was laid in state here, and Bill Clinton booked it in 1994 to pray during a trip to San Francisco — just him, his thoughts and the Secret Service lurking in the background.

The cathedral holds all manner of unexpected artifacts. There’s a circa 1521 stone tomb from France with a coat of arms from the monastic-military Knights Hospitaller, Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. According to legend a Crusader knight was interred here but no longer, as French revolutionaries scattered his bones. A Romanesque limestone credence table for the host and wine likely dates to the 12th century; it’s the oldest furnishing in the church.

The next large room is filled with art and furniture, including the bishop’s chair, carved from redwood with armrests shaped like an owl (wisdom) and lion (strength). A hallway holds Ansel Adams photographs and an oak eagle carved by Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore. It served as the cathedral’s lectern up until the 1960s. Lit from below is a brilliant, colorful portrait from photographer David LaChapelle of a Haitian model as the Virgin Mary; it was gifted a couple years ago and consecrated as an icon of the cathedral.

Docent Joe Garity gives a tour of the columbarium located inside the Chapel of St. Francis during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

The cathedral’s crypt is unusual in that it’s above ground. There’s room for 3,000 souls, and it’s only half full, so get your plans in order today and you can spend the afterlife here for $8,000 . (Though $10,000 will get you a space at a more desirable “eye-to-heart” level.)

We climb into the upper recesses of the cathedral and, crossing a catwalk, encounter E=MC2, the stained-glass Albert Einstein tribute. A glassy version of astronaut John Glenn is nearby. Our guide cautions us to tighten our hardhats, lest they fall off while we’re looking around and bonk the noggins of the faithful below.

Tour group visitor Kelly Huibregtse, of San Francisco, smiles as she ducks down to enter a small passage way inside the south tower during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. The passageway allows visitors to view the stained glass window of Albert Einstein located 174 feet above the floor of the cathedral. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

The final stretch takes us up multiple levels of stairs to an open-air observatory protected by pigeon netting. Bells crash and powerful winds blow, as we take in the cathedral’s nearly 250-foot-tall spire, called Le Fleche, because it represents an arrow shooting prayers directly up to god. There are no gargoyles on this steeple, but there are grotesques, in this case wyverns that look like fire-breathing dragons with scorpion tails. They’re meant to ward off evil from not just the church but also the city.

“I think we might need more dragons,” rumbles our guide Sparks.

The tower offers nearly 360-degree views of the expansive city below. Our attention is caught by a building in a park across the way. It’s the Pacific-Union Club at the top of Nob Hill, one of the largest men’s-only clubs in the U.S. The motto, our guide intones, is rumored to be “No women, no journalists, no Democrats.”

A view of the Albert Einstein stained glass window can only be seen during a behind the scenes tour of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, Calif., on Friday, April 5, 2024. The window is located almost 200 feet above ground. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

Details: General admission to San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, located at 1100 California St., is $12. Behind the scenes tours are $27 to $30. Reserved a timed entry ticket at gracecathedral.org .

For over 200 years this cathedral held the revered Our Lady of Vladimir Icon, which Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky brought from Vyshgorod in Ukraine to Vladimir. The icon was later transferred to Moscow and can now be seen in the Tretyakov Gallery. According to legend, the icon was created by Luke the Evangelist.
  • Golden Gates - a rare monument of Russian 12th century defensive architecture and all that remains of the walls which once surrounded Vladimir.
  • St Demetrius’ Cathedral - one of the most remarkable monuments of mediaeval Rus. It was built in the 1190s as a palace temple of Grand Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest of Vladimir and is decorated on the outside with engravings of plants and animals, while the interior still retains fragments of frescos by Andrey Rublev.

6 DAY / SUZDAL

cathedral bells tour

  • Suzdal Kremlin - this is the oldest part and historical core of the city. Although the kremlin's walls no longer stand, parts of the earthen mound fortifications do remain. The buildings inside the kremlin are now used as museums.
  • Nativity Cathedral (1222) – the kremlin’s cathedral is the Nativity Cathedral and the current version stands on the place of an 11th century version which was built on the orders of Vladimir Monomakh. The interior features stunning frescos as well as a necropolis where the sons of Yury Dolgoruky have been interred along with several members of various noble families from Suzdal.
  • Spaso-Yefimiev Monastery (1352) – this is the largest monastery in Suzdal and with its large fortified walls it is often mistaken for being the Suzdal Kremlin. Today it is a museum with various exhibitions including its main cathedral with its amazing frescos.
  • Museum of the Wooden Architecture and Peasant life – this collection of wooden buildings, including churches and windmills, from various parts of European Russia is one of the best of architectural museums in Russia. It now resembles a village in itself made up of beautiful examples of 17th - 19th century wooden buildings which have been brought here to protect them from fire or from being dismantled.
  • Trading Rows (1812) – Suzdal’s set of trading rows are still used for their original purpose and a souvenir market is held outside where you can buy a whole range of souvenirs, including bottles of the mead for which Suzdal is famed.

During the transfer you will pass through the territory known as Opolye where the landscape is not at all typical for the north-eastern part of European Russia and characterised by its open fields and wide open spaces.

7 DAY / ROSTOV VELIKY

  • Rostov Kremlin  – the former residence of the metropolitan of the Rostov Eparchy which is called a kremlin due to its large, fortified walls which were built more to look impressive rather than to provide a defensive function. The white stone kremlin is a monument of pre-Petrine Russian architecture.
  • Dormition Cathedral  – the main cathedral in the kremlin which dates from the 16th century and was modelled of the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. It is 60 metres in height. Next to the cathedral is a belfry containing 15 unique bells, whose sound is widely celebrated across Russia.
  • Museum of Rostov Finift  – Rostov finift enamel painting has been a famous local handicraft since the 18th century. This museum has over 3000 examples on display.
  • Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery  – Rostov’s Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery was founded in approximately 1390 by Bishop Jacob (Yakov) of Rostov, after whom it is now named. After the Kremlin it is the most beautiful sight in the city with its eclectic Conception of Anna Church and St Jacob of Rostov's Church.

8 DAY / YAROSLAVL

  • Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery  – one of the largest, richest and best fortified monasteries of the 16th century. It is closely associated with the volunteer army of Minin and Pozharsky which was based here while it prepared to liberate Moscow from the Poles in the early 17th century. Inside the monastery is the Transfiguration Cathedral which is the oldest surviving building in Yaroslavl and was built on the site of an even older church between 1506 and 1516. It interior is decorated with spectacular frescos. To protect these unique frescos it can only be visited between May and October.
  • Volga Embankment  - this embankment running along the River Volga is one of the prettiest places in Yaroslavl and several historical churches and other buildings are located here. From here you can enjoy great views of the largest river in Europe.
  • St Elijah the Prophet’s Church  (17th Century) - this church is a masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture which is stunningly beautiful on the outside and on the inside thanks to its detailed frescos and amazing iconostasis. To protect these unique frescos it can only be visited between May and October.

9 DAY / ARRIVAL IN ST PETERSBURG

st petersburg

10 DAY / CITY TOUR - HERMITAGE - PETER AND PAUL FORTRESS

  • Our Lady of Kazan Cathedral - one of the city's most famous landmarks with its instantly recognisable semi-circular colonnade with 96 columns.
  • Peter the Great Monument (The Bronze Horseman) - the most famous monument in St Petersburg and one of its most recognisable symbols. It was a gift from Catherine the Great to the city.
  • Field of Mars - a memorial field where many revolutionaries were buried and also where the first eternal flame in Russia was ignited.
  • Rostral columns  - symbols of the city which were used as lighthouses up until 1885.
  • Guided Tour of the  Peter and Paul Fortress – the original point of foundation of St Petersburg which later served as a prison for political prisoners. Its cathedral is the resting place for almost all Russian monarchs after Peter the Great.
  • Guided Tour of the State Hermitage - one of the most famous art galleries in the world which receives over 3.5 million visitors a year. It is located inside the Winter Palace which was once the official residence of the Russian emperors and empresses. Many of the palace's 365 rooms are filled with sculptures and paintings of world-renowned artists of all ages, although quite often the interiors of the palace outshine even these masterpieces. It is said that if you stand next to each of the exhibits or pictures for a minute, it will take eight years of your life to see everything. Our guide though knows shortcuts and will take you to the must-see exhibitions and rooms so you won’t need to stay there that long!

11 DAY / SAVIOUR CATHEDRAL - CATHERINE PALACE

St Petersburg

  Breakfast in the hotel.

  • The collection of mosaics of this cathedral is one of the largest in Europe. The mosaics cover the whole interior of the cathedral, and the production of these masterpieces delayed the completion of the cathedral by ten years! Famous Russian masters - Vasnetsov, Nesterov, Belyaev, Kharlamov, Zhuravlev, Ryabushkin - took part in the work. Even the iconostasis features mosaics .
  • Pushkin (formerly known as Tsarskoe Selo) is located in 25km from St Petersburg. The Catherine Palace here is among the top five most beautiful palaces in Russia and its Amber Room is often called as the most beautiful palace hall in the world. About 100kg of gold was used to decorate the palace .

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.

Covered Snow Trees with New Year Balls at GUM in Twilight

The sky lightens over the illuminated with hundreds of lights GUM building at Red Square after heavy snowfall during morning twilight in Moscow. The line of trees along the building decorated with new year balls for winter holidays lowered down under the ice and heavy snow.
