2022 PGA Tour Champions schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

champions tour golf 2022

The PGA Tour has announced the 2022 PGA Tour Champions schedule, with the 50-and-up docket boasting 28 official events, with several new sponsors and tournaments.

The nearly $63 million schedule starts in Hawaii from January 20-22 with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.

All five PGA Tour Champions majors return in 2022, with the US Senior Open at Saucon Valley in Pennsylvania and the Senior Open at Gleneagles Hotel.

The Senior PGA Championship moves back to Harbor Shores in Michigan, as it will continue to do in even-numbered years.

The Morocco Champions is back after it has been gone from the schedule during the pandemic.

The Charles Schwab Cup playoff remain the same, with the Dominion Energy Charity Classic kicking off the proceedings with 72 players from Oct. 16-18. The Boca Raton Championship will have 54 players in Florida after a week off ahead of the 36-player Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Arizona.

The Five Players to Watch Closely on the Champions Tour in 2022

champions tour golf 2022

All You Need to Know About the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, April 22nd-25th 2021

The 2020-21 PGA Tour Champions Super Season was undoubtedly one for the record books. In a season filled to the brim with highs, not many would argue against Bernhard Langer’s unprecedented sixth Charles Schwab Cup being the seminal moment. Phil Mickelson playing six times and claiming four victories was huge for the profile of the tour, and both he and Jim Furyk will hope to be in contention this year for the Schwab Cup.

Steven Alker and David Duval make up the top five list of players most likely worth keeping a close eye on in the chase for the 2022 PGA Tour of Champions Schwab Cup.

  • Bernhard Langer

The question is simple: Can Bernhard Langer still compete at this level in the same year that he reaches his milestone 65th birthday? The German has no problems answering that question in all the previous years he has been swinging a stick, and he now has more top-ten finishes, more victories, and more Schwab Cup titles than anyone on tour. Is he in a position of health to continue winning, however? It is unlikely he will play most weeks this season as he did in the 2020-12 Super Season, but it’s impossible not to think he will give this push for a seventh Schwab Cup everything he has. Langer, after all, in typical German style, loves nothing more than proving his doubters wrong.

2. Phil Mickelson

Mickelson started six times and finished 12th on the Schwab Cup points list. The question on everyone’s lips is, how much will he play? He has made it clear on several occasions that he loves playing with and against the golfers that he grew up idolizing, but the pull of competing at the highest level against the worlds best young players is what still motivates him the most.

If Phil was to double his appearances from six to twelve, then you have to think he would be playing enough golf to put himself in contention to win the Schwab Cup.

3. Steven Alker

When Alker celebrated his half-century birthday early last season, many wondered if he would become the man the rest would chase, and in ten starts, he had nine top-ten finishes alongside his one victory. He also finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson at the end of year Schwab Cup Championship.

Alker finished in 18th place on the Schwab Cup points list from only ten starts. He will be around on this tour for many years to come, and he will be highly competitive. In 31 rounds in 2021 on the PGA Tour Champions, Alker finished under par 27 times.

4. Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk had the Schwab Cup very much in his sights heading into the back nine on the final day of the 2020-21 season. On the 10th and the 13th, Bogeys ultimately cost him, and he finished behind Langer in 2nd place on the Schwab Cup points list. Despite falling marginally short, Furyk had a great first season on the Champions Tour, banking three wins and 18 top 10s in 26 starts. It is more likely than not that Furyk will win the Schwab Cup at some point in the coming years. He will be a full-time player on the Champions Tour, and his incredible work ethic and world-class game will no doubt see him get his hands on plenty of trophies in the coming years.

5. David Duval

Duval will be making his debut at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai. He hasn’t played regularly on the PGA Tour since 2014, so questions are lingering about just how good his game is and if he will be able to reach the levels necessary to compete against the best over 50s. Let’s not forget, though, David Duval is a former world number one and a 13-time winner on the PGA Tour, so he makes the list of top five. There is a lot of excitement as we wait to see how his game fares. See also: The PGA Tour is Coming to Netflix

PHOENIX — To think it all started at a Monday qualifier 15 months ago.

Thirty-two events and $4,710,612 later, Steven Alker has reached new heights. On Sunday, he clinched his first PGA Tour Champions series title at Phoenix Country Club, punctuating his win with a big smile and a fist pump on the 18th green.

Alker shot a final-round 68 to finish solo third, which was a whopping eight shots back of tournament winner Padraig Harrington , but still good enough to clinch the series title for the first time. With a Harrington win, any finish inside the top five would have been good enough for Alker.

“Amazing. Honestly, just having friends and family and the support here this week has been amazing,” said Alker, who has lived in Arizona since 2002. “Playing with Padraig today, it was kind of difficult because ‘Do I chase him, do I protect?’ … I just tried to play my game as good as I could, but he played amazing and just glad to be champion.”

This moment is the culmination of a rapid-fire success rate for Alker since joining the senior circuit.

In 2021, 18 days after he turned 50 which made him eligible for the PGA Tour Champions, Alker flew to Seattle looking for an outside shot at getting into the Boeing Classic. He got in thanks a strong Monday qualifier score, a rout he had to take because he had no status on the tour.

He hasn’t played in a PGA Tour event since 2017 and he spent the majority of his pro career slogging through Korn Ferry Tour events. According to Harrington, Alker grinding on the Korn Ferry Tour into his late 40s is what most likely set the table for his amazing run now.

“The fact is he was always a nice player,” Harrington said Wednesday before the championship got started. “He’s probably as physically fit now as he was 20 years ago, so he hasn’t gone backwards. The players who tend to do nicely out here are the ones who are still trying to be competitive from 45 years of age to 50 years of age. Those are the ones. You can’t give the game up for five years or eight years or 10 years and hope to come out here and find it again, you know, unless you were a world-class player. You’ve got to keep being competitive and he did that. That’s why you’re seeing his good play now. He was still on the Korn Ferry Tour when he was 49 years of age. There’s not a lot of guys at 49 who could do that.”

Rounds of 67-73-67 in his first Champions event netted him a tie for seventh in the 2021 Boeing Classic, and that would be it for his Monday qualifying days as that top-10 finish earned him a spot in the field the next week at the Ally Challenge, where he finished solo third. From there, he kept getting into more Champions events because he kept stacking up top-10s.

In fact, he posted six straight top-10s and earned a spot in the 2021 Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. In the second of the two playoff events last year, Alker found victory lane at the TimberTech Championship. A second-place finish at Phoenix Country Club the following week capped a whirlwind stretch and put $1,146,207 into his bank account.

The calendar change to 2022 didn’t slow him down. Alker won three times before June 1 and then won for a series-tying fourth time to open the Schwab playoffs.

By the time they got to Phoenix, Alker had a commanding lead in the points race. Even Harrington’s blistering weekend scores of 62 and 65 had no bearing on the steady Alker. He didn’t make a bogey until the 12th hole Sunday. He had another one on 13 but then birdied the 14th. A birdie on the 16th was his 21st of the week.

Alker’s third-place finish is worth $210,000, bringing his 2022 total $3,544,425 and career total to $4,710,632.

“Just a lot of hard yards. It’s just, you know, I’ve played everywhere, I’ve played everywhere and I think that kind of helped today in a way just playing the PGA Tour and Australasia and Asia and Korn Ferry,” he said. “I’ve played everywhere. It’s been an amazing journey and just to be here and to have this opportunity has been amazing.”

Now it’s time to celebrate, but how?

“I like red wine,” he said. “I don’t want to mix drinks tonight, won’t be a good idea, but we’ll have a couple. It will probably sink in a bit more tomorrow, but yeah, this is neat, it’s so cool.”

Alker will also collect $1 million in bonus money for winning the Schwab Cup series title, money that will be paid out as a lump sum deposit into a Schwab brokerage account.

  • First place: $1 million
  • Second: $500,000
  • Third: $300,000
  • Fourth: $200,000
  • Fifth: $100,000

For winning the tournament, Harrington earned the first-place prize of $440,000, bringing his season total to $3,293,255.

Cameron Young, top-ranked golfer coming to 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, shoots 59

Cameron Young will be coming to Detroit for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic in a few days after a historic round.

Young, top-ranked player in next week's PGA Tour stop at the Detroit Golf Club, carded the 13th-ever sub-60 round on the PGA Tour, posting an 11-under-par 59 on Saturday in the third round of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Connecticut at TPC River Highlands. He's the 12th player to shoot 59 or better on Tour after making seven birdies and two eagles.

It's the lowest round on Tour in almost four years.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Jim Furyk shot a 12-under 58 in 2016 at the Travelers Championship, the lowest round ever on the PGA Tour.

Young only hit six of 14 fairways, but stuck 15 greens in regulation, was 3-for-3 scrambling and made an astounding 115 feet, 11 inches worth of putts on just 24 putts, according to the Tour .

Young started the day tied for 43rd at 2 under par, but finished the afternoon as the co-leader with Tom Kim — who had yet to tee off — at 13-under. (Kim, the No. 26 player in the world, is also in the 156-player field for the Rocket Mortgage Classic .)

More: It's unlikely but Rickie Fowler must save us with another thrilling Rocket Mortgage Classic

Young went 4-under 31 on the back nine, including an eagle on the par-4 drivable 15th, which saw his long iron bounce short of the green but run up to the front pin hole location to 4 feet.

Young, 27, missed a 7½-foot birdie on the par-3 16th , but birdied the par-4 17th from 5½ feet after sticking an iron shot over the water from 162 yards. That allowed him a chance for 58 if he could birdie No. 18.

He missed the fairway and came up short of the green, but got up-and-down by rolling in a nervy, sliding 10-footer to secure 59.

"It was a little bit tricky there at the end," he said on CBS. "I feel like it would have been one of the worst 60s ever shot, given the few chances that I had kind of on the back nine. Thankful that that putt went in on 18, but I definitely really had a chance all day (to shoot 59) even though it didn't feel like it necessarily for a few holes there."

Young shot 7-under 28 on the front nine, including a hole-out eagle on No. 3 from 142 yards, as he started birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie on his first four holes.

He benefitted from a wet course from Friday's rains, which forced organizers to institute the "lift, clean and place" rule for the third round.

Young, who played with Jordan Spieth on Saturday, had posted 10 consecutive rounds of par or worse before shooting 4-under 66 on Friday after a 72 in Round 1.

Young is ranked the 23rd player in the world, but has yet to win on Tour since his debut in 2019, despite seven career runner-up finishes, including in the 2022 Open Championship to Cameron Smith. Young was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year that season.

Young finished in a tie for second in the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, five strokes behind winner Tony Finau.

Young will have a chance to get his first win Sunday in Connecticut, before coming west to Detroit ahead of Thursday's first round for his 69th career start on Tour.

2024 Travelers Championship odds, predictions: Scottie Scheffler projection from model that hit past 3 majors

Scottie scheffler, the no. 1-ranked golfer in the world, will aim for his sixth victory of the season in the travelers championship 2024.

scottie-scheffler-1.jpg

Xander Schauffele is on fire as he hunts for his second win of the season at the 2024 Travelers Championship. The Southern California native and world No. 2 got his first win of the season at the PGA Championship, which was also the first major title of his career. He heads to TPC River Highlands with four straight top-10 finishes and should be confident given he won the Travelers Championship in 2022. According to the latest 2024 Travelers Championship odds, Schauffele is going off at 15-2.

Scottie Scheffler, who finished T-4 at TPC River Highlands last year, is the 4-1 favorite on the PGA odds board. Should you back Schauffele or Scheffler to win the 2024 Travelers Championship at such short odds? Before locking in your 2024 Travelers Championship picks or Scottie Scheffler props, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot on its PGA Tour picks in recent years. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since June 2020, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000!

McClure's best bets also included Bryson DeChambeau winning the 2024 U.S. Open at +1800 odds and the model correctly predicted his second major victory heading into the weekend. And at the 2024 PGA Championship, the model correctly called Xander Schauffele's first major championship heading into the weekend.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters -- its third Masters in a row -- and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the Travelers Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 Travelers Championship predictions

One major surprise: Corey Conners, a massive 50-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

In order to score well this week, players will need to be extremely accurate with their irons and few do it better than Conners. The 32-year-old Canadian enters this week's event ranked second in strokes gained: approach to green (0.920) and sixth in greens in regulation percentage (70.37%). He's also been accurate off the tee, ranking 19th in driving accuracy (68.67%). Those impressive stats, plus his long odds, make him a strong value pick for your 2024 Travelers Championship bets this week.

The model has also examined where Scheffler finishes. Scheffler finished T4 at the Travelers Championship last season, and he has won five tournaments this season. He is coming off his worst showing of the year though, barely making the cut before finishing T41 at 8 over in the U.S. Open last week.

The 27-year-old won the Masters and RBC Heritage in April before adding a T8 in the PGA Championship and a T2 in the Charles Schwab Challenge. He picked up his fifth win of the year in the Memorial Tournament at 8 under prior to his dud in the third major of the year. Scheffler leads the PGA Tour in total strokes gained, scoring average and birdie average, so he is considered one of the top threats to win the Travelers.  The model just locked in its Scottie Scheffler Travelers Championship picks here.

How to make 2024 Travelers Championship picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 22-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title, and McClure's best bets include a massive triple-digit longshot. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Travelers Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Travelers Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Travelers Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 13 golf majors, including the last three Masters and all three majors this year .

Lauren Hartlage

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Lauren Hartlage might not be super familiar with being in professional golf’s limelight. But she isn’t shying away from the big moment this week at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Through three rounds at Sahalee Country Club, Hartlage is tied for second at 5-under total, two back of 54-hole leader Amy Yang at the year’s third major championship. After a ho-hum 1-over 73 start on Thursday, the 26-year-old turned up the heat on Friday and Saturday in Sammamish, Wash., making five birdies in her last seven holes in the second round to post a 3-under 69, two pairs of which came back-to-back on holes 12 and 13 as well as 15 and 16.

Moving Day saw Hartlage go bogey-free, an impressive feat at a difficult ball-striking venue like Sahalee. She made three birdies on holes 4, 11 and 16 en route to another 69, hitting 15 of 18 greens and 12 of 14 fairways, the latter of which is also a stellar accomplishment considering how narrow this venue plays off the tee.

After her strong play over the last two days, the University of Louisville alum now finds herself squarely in the mix at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship with 18 holes to play. And even though this is only the third time she has been within five of the lead entering the final round since she joined the LPGA Tour in 2022, Hartlage is more than ready to contend on Sunday for her first major championship title, a lifelong goal she’s had since getting into golf in the first place.

“I'm super excited,” said Hartlage. “I’ve never been in this position before, and this is something that I dreamed about growing up as a kid, so it's really awesome to be in this position and see how it goes and learn from every day, every round.”

Hartlage hails from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, one of few LPGA Tour athletes to ever come from the Bluegrass State. And while Elizabethtown Country Club – the course at which she when she is home – bears little similarity to Sahalee with its towering evergreens and tight fairways, the tree-lined look still feels familiar to Hartlage, something that has appeared to be beneficial for her this week.

“I love tree-lined golf courses and rough. It’s what I'm used to at home,” Hartlage said of Sahalee. “Obviously, the trees are a lot bigger than in Kentucky, but I do like this style of golf course. I was excited to see how my game shaped up around here.”

Despite being quite a ways away from home in the Pacific Northwest, Hartlage does have a few people cheering her on this week at Sahalee. Her swing coach, PGA Tour winner Grant Waite, has been on-site all week, working with Hartlage on some little things in her golf swing and helping to keep her grounded when the major championship anxiety starts to creep in.

“(We have) been working on a couple of things throughout the beginning of the year. Working on those same things and getting more comfortable and being able to play with those feels has been really helpful,” Hartlage said. “Yesterday, before my round, I wasn't hitting it great on the range, and Grant was there. He's like, ‘I've seen so many people hit terrible on the range and then win the tournament.’ Little things like that, knowing how it is as a player out here. He understands what we're going through, so it's been super helpful for me, especially this week.”

Her mother Kim is also in the gallery at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, traveling as much as she can with her daughter as Hartlage competes week in and week out on the LPGA Tour. Of course, having a parent around can help an athlete both mentally and emotionally as they chase their dreams on some of the world’s biggest stages.

But Hartlage’s mom has a unique experience with the game, one that allows her to have a different perspective when it comes to her daughter’s success and helps her provide invaluable encouragement that has been critical to Lauren’s success as a professional athlete.

“She was my high school golf coach. She got me into it, so it’s great to have her out here because she understands everything that comes along with playing golf, the ups and downs,” said Hartlage. “It's been nice to have my parents come whenever they can. Especially during the summer, they're able to come to more tournaments. They love golf, and they're very supportive of me.

“They don't add any extra pressure. They just want to see me happy and do as well as I can. It's been great to have them in my corner just to always be there for me.”

Sunday’s final round will see Hartlage contend for a major title for the very first time in her young career, a position she has yet to find herself in after competing for three years on the LPGA Tour. Even the most storied of veterans can struggle to feel like they are truly meant for the brightest spotlights in golf, and Hartlage has definitely fallen into that trap in the years since she first earned LPGA Tour status.

But Hartlage has worked hard this season on her mentality, efforts that appear to finally be paying off at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

“I have been back to Q-School the last few years, so haven't been playing my best, and it's easy to think that you don't belong or you're not able to win a tournament,” Hartlage explained. “But I have people on my team helping me and leading me along the way and keeping my confidence up, which has been really, really nice to have.

“A problem I had had at the beginning of the year is I like to look at the future, and if I miss a cut or two, I'm already like, I'm going to miss the next three cuts. It's hard to not to give yourself some negative thoughts (about) your day or round if you hit some bad shots. So just staying more in the moment. Recognizing that one bad shot or tournament doesn't mean the rest of your season is going to be bad.”

No matter what happens tomorrow, Hartlage can certainly chalk this week in Washington up as a huge success, one that should serve as a confidence booster as she looks ahead to the rest of the 2024 season.

But she has still got one more opportunity to make the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship her maiden professional title, and even if the nerves start to crop up as she makes her around Sahalee tomorrow, Hartlage will take solace in the fact that she is more than good enough to contend on the LPGA Tour, a fact that has never felt truer than now for the 26-year-old.

“I don't think you're ever going to be completely comfortable out there,” said Hartlage. “It's just managing your feelings and letting yourself stay in the moment. I know I'm not going to be comfortable on the first tee tomorrow. Just accepting that and letting it play more freely out there.”

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Richard Green has won three times on the DP World Tour and ranked as high as No. 29 in the world. Just one thing was missing on his resume. He had never played a full season in the United States.

The 51-year-old Australian made amends at Final Stage of the PGA TOUR Champions Qualifying Tournament. Green carded a four-round total of 18 under at TPC Scottsdale (Champions) to finish four clear of Wes Short, Jr., for medalist honors. With five PGA TOUR Champions cards available at Final Stage, it was more than enough to punch his full-time ticket to the circuit.

Green and Short join Tim O’Neal, Brian Cooper and David McKenzie as players to earn 2023 PGA TOUR Champions status via Final Stage of Q-School. The top five at Final Stage (no ties) gain access into all open, full-field events on PGA TOUR Champions next season. (Finishers 6-30 and ties earn PGA TOUR Champions Associate Membership, gaining access into weekly event qualifiers).

“It means everything,” said Green of earning PGA TOUR Champions membership. “I’ve had a long career playing overseas in Europe and I’ve wanted to always play in America. I tried my best to get a card on the PGA TOUR in the 2000s and just fell short all the time. It’s like a goal achieved, so that’s a big deal.”

Green geared up for Q-School by competing on the European Senior Tour this summer, winning twice at the Jersey Legends and WINSTONgolf Senior Open. He cruised through his First Stage site in Mesquite, Nevada, with a 21-under total, a whopping 12 strokes clear of the field. He didn’t miss a beat this week in the Phoenix metroplex, carding rounds of 68-65-68-65 to assume an all-important spot in the top five, with medalist honors to boot.

Short, Jr., 59, has long professed a goal of playing 10 seasons on PGA TOUR Champions. Short, a two-time PGA TOUR Champions winner, achieved his goal with a 14-under effort at TPC Scottsdale. The Texas native spent time as a club pro early in his career before gaining status on the Korn Ferry Tour and then the PGA TOUR, on which he won the 2005 Shriners Children’s Open. Now his journey in professional golf continues.

Drama existed around the all-important top-five number, with a playoff looking inevitable at several points throughout the day. The cut line stood 12 under into the final round, but at one point drifted back to 10 under as the tension built. Players turned on the jets on the back nine, though, led by veteran pro Tim O’Neal, who began the day at 7 under but carded 6-under 65 to post 13 under in the clubhouse. Australian pro David McKenzie matched 13 under one group later, followed by Pittsburgh native Brian Cooper in the subsequent group.

Several players had a chance to post 13 under and force a playoff – including England’s Simon Griffiths, Colombia’s Jesus Rivas and Massachusetts’ Fran Quinn – but none managed to do so.

The Q-School success marks an appreciative change in narrative for O’Neal, who narrowly missed at PGA TOUR Q-School on multiple occasions and never earned a TOUR card. Now he’s

set to compete against some of the game’s greats on a season-long basis. McKenzie and Cooper both earned their PGA TOUR Champions cards in emotional fashion – McKenzie in tribute to his younger brother Justin, who passed away last fall, and Cooper after a public battle with depression earlier this year.

Here's a capsule look at the five players to gain access into all open, full-field events on the 2023 PGA TOUR Champions, beginning at the Chubb Classic in Naples in February.
