The 12 Best Things to Do in Chattanooga

Tucked alongside the banks of the Tennessee River in the southeastern corner of the state, Chattanooga is a former industrial and railroad town that's transformed into a must-visit destination packed with green spaces, museums, restaurants, and concert venues. From the sprawling Tennessee Riverwalk multi-use greenway to the expansive caverns and dramatic summits of Lookout Mountain, the city is ideal for outdoor lovers, who can cycle, hike, cycle, and paddle here year-round. Those who prefer the indoors also have lots to choose from, ranging from art galleries and museums to a world-class aquarium. From the works of Jasper Johns and Elizabeth Catlett at the Hunter Museum of American Art to the tumbling underground Ruby Falls, here are 12 of Chattanooga's can't-miss attractions.

Visit the Hunter Museum of American Art

Courtesy of Visit Chattanooga

Housed in three distinct buildings (including a striking classical revival mansion) on a cliff overlooking the Tennessee River, the Hunter Museum of American Art holds an impressive collection of decorative arts, paintings, sculptures, and mixed media pieces from the 17th century to today. Permanent collections include American impressionism, Hudson River School, and contemporary art from Ansel Adams, Jasper Johns, Elizabeth Catlett, Andy Warhol, and Loïs Mailou Jones. Don't miss the outdoor sculpture gardens, which offer sweeping views of the river below.

Explore Water Ecosystems at the Tennessee Aquarium

One of the world's largest freshwater aquariums, the Chattanooga Aquarium is a can't-miss attraction. Located along the banks of the Tennessee River downtown, the museum is two aquariums in one. Start your visit in the River Journey building, dedicated to river ecosystems from the Appalachian Cove Forest to the Tennessee River and home to turtles, alligators, river otters, and more. The second building, Ocean Journey, features interactive stingray exhibits and aquatic creatures ranging from colorful reef fish to playful penguins and imposing jellyfish. The aquarium also has an IMAX theatre, which offers daily 3D screenings of films on marine animals and global wildlife.

Stroll through the Bluff View Arts District

Compact at just one and a half blocks and situated on a rocky bluff high above downtown, the historic Bluff View Arts District is packed with coffee shops, restaurants, art galleries, gardens, and more. Grab a coffee from Rembrandt's Coffee House and some sweet bread or a pretzel roll from Bluff View Bakery to stroll through the River Gallery Sculpture and enjoy sweeping views of the city, Tennessee River, and Walnut Street Bridge below. Then stop by the nearby Hunter Museum of American Art or the River Gallery, which features rotating exhibits from local and national artists.

Walk Across the Walnut Street Bridge

Several massive bridges span the width of the Tennessee River along the northern edge of downtown Chattanooga. Still, the Walnut Street Bridge is the only one dedicated solely to pedestrians. Built in 1891, the iconic blue iron and wooden structure is one of the world's longest pedestrian bridges and connects downtown to the city's North Shore neighborhood. Pedal or stroll after a visit to nearby points of interest like the Hunter Museum of American Art and the Tennessee Aquarium, and then connect to the 13-mile Chattanooga Riverwalk multi-use path for a longer ride or walk.

Play at Coolidge Park

Walk or cycle across the Walnut Street Bridge from downtown to the city's North Shore and this waterfront park, part of the Tennessee Riverwalk greenway. Picnic in the expansive grassy meadows, try your hand at rock climbing, splash in the water fountains on a hot day, or take a ride on the restored 100-year-old carousel. The park regularly hosts special events like concerts and music festivals and is located near several shops, restaurants, and galleries.

Visit Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park

The site of an important Civil War battle, today, the nearly 10,000-acre Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park is one of the city's largest green spaces. Hike, cycle, or ride a horse along almost 80 miles of trails dotted with historic cannons, monuments, homes, and scenic vistas. Canoe or kayak in West Chickamauga and Lookout Creeks, or rock climb at Sunset Rock on the western bluff of Lookout Mountain and Eagles Nest on the northern lower slope of Lookout Mountain. Explore exhibits dedicated to the Civil War era and the 1863 Campaign for Chattanooga at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center in Fort Oglethorpe, GA, which also screens a 26-minute orientation film.

Play at Rock City Gardens

Rocky City is one of Chattanooga's most breathtaking outdoor spaces. Perched atop Lookout Mountain, the gardens include the 4,100 Enchanted Trail, which winds through caverns, rock formations, wildflowers, and a cascading 100-foot waterfall. Don't miss Lover's Leap, where you can see up to seven states on a clear day. Other highlights include a 180-foot suspension bridge, gardens with seven art installations and 400 native plants, and Fairyland Caverns, sculptures depicting scenes from classic fairy tales. Timed tickets are required for entry, and Rock City has on-site dining and shopping.

Tour the Caverns at Ruby Falls

Signs for Ruby Falls are plastered along roads throughout the area, and for a good reason: it's the country's tallest and deepest cave waterfall open to the public. Buy a ticket to take a glass-front elevator ride down 260 feet to the thundering falls, where you'll receive a guided tour of the ancient limestone caverns and shimmering pools below. Tour schedules vary by season, and tickets sell out quickly, so plan ahead. Want to stay above ground? Soar through 700 feet of tree canopy above Lookout mountain with a zip-lining tour or scale a 40-foot climbing tower, with routes available for all levels.

Ride the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

Courtesy of Lookout Mountain Incline Railway

Take a ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway for the city's best views. With a nearly 73 percent grade, the one-mile track is one of the steepest passenger railways in the world. The trek to the top last fifteen minutes and rewards with panoramic vistas of the Chattanooga Valley from an observation tower at the summit of Lookout Mountain. The summit also has a small gift shop that sells souvenirs and snacks.

Check Out the Chattanooga Choo Choo

Courtesy Visit Chattanooga

Immortalized in the Glenn Miller Orchestra's song of the same name, the Chattanooga Choo Choo is one of the city's most iconic buildings. The ornate brick facade was originally a hotel and then transformed into a railway station, with more than 50 trains passing through daily in its heyday. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the property is now a multi-use complex with two music venues, a comedy club, a distillery, shops, restaurants, and bars. Spend the night in one of the preserved Pullman Train Cars or traditional hotel rooms, or stroll through the 2-acre gardens, with manicured lawns, yard games like Jenga and corn hole, and rocking chairs.

Learn at the Creative Discovery Museum

Little travelers can enjoy animal meet-and-greets, story times, science demonstrations, and more at this downtown children's museum. The perfect rainy or hot day activity, the museum has interactive activities ranging from digging for dinosaur bones to jamming with musical instruments in a music studio, splashing in an outdoor water feature, or learning about vegetables and herbs in the scenic rooftop garden.

Tour Raccoon Mountain Caverns

Courtesy of Raccoon Caverns

Raccoon Mountain is one of the most geologically active caverns in the South, just a 15-minute drive from downtown Chattanooga. Take a walking tour of the more than 5-mile cavern network to learn the cave's history, spot wildlife like bats and salamanders, and see ancient fossils and formations like soda straws and stalagmites up close. The caverns also offer a more challenging cave expedition tour, plus other activities like go-kart rides and panning for gemstones.

25 Best Things to Do in Chattanooga (TN)

Chattanooga has been named one of the top places to visit in the United States, and for a great reason.

The southern city in Tennessee mixes outdoor adventure with laid-back charm, so you can enjoy a mixture of the two, and so that all of your traveling companions can find something that perfectly suits their tastes. The riverfront, the mountains, the history, the restaurants, the arts…it’s all right there for you to explore.

Let’s have a look at the best things to do in Chattanooga :

1. Ride the River

The River

It’s hard to visit Chattanooga and not get on the river! It accounts for so much of the city’s character and gorgeous scenery.

There are a ton of options for you to choose from, though, when it comes to how you see the Tennessee River Gorge.

You can easily charter a yacht, rent a party boat (which is a very small boat powered by the sun and pedals, and you and your dozen or so friends are encouraged to come out, drink and pedal all at the same time), take a tour on a speed boat, go rafting, etc.

Though it may be hard to make your decision, you won’t have a hard time finding a recreation company that’ll get you out on the water — there are tons of them and they’re all waiting to cater to visitors’ every need.

2. Take a City Tour

Chattanooga

A great way, of course, to start out any visit to any city is to get a brief overview of the area from a professional.

There are several options for this in Chattanooga, whether you want to be part of a group led by an actual tour guide, or you’d rather have a more private experience with a local.

Whatever your taste, there are also plenty of tour modes of transportation to choose from, whether you want to walk, take a bus or even zip around town on a Segway!

3. Take a Ghost Tour

Chattanooga Ghost Tours

If you’d prefer your tour to have a little more excitement and maybe something slightly scary, sign up for a ghost tour.

In fact, those provided by Chattanooga Ghost Tours Inc.

, have been named one of the Top 10 ghost tours in the Untied States.

They claim that you’ll actually get to talk to and see ghosts and spirits while on the tour, nightly, in the downtown area of the city.

In addition to the downtown tour (which is open to both adults and kids), other tours take you to a haunted cemetery and tavern.

4. Go to a Whiskey Tasting

Whiskey Tasting

If you’re going to be in Tennessee, you’re going to need to go to the oldest registered distillery in the United States.

The name’s Jack Daniels, and they still make the entirety of their Tennessee whiskey right there on site.

There are several different tours you can choose from, but all are led by experts with tons of stories to share, while you enjoy a taste of some of the best Tennessee whiskey in the world.

5. Head to the Chattanooga Zoo

Chattanooga Zoo

Great for travelers with kids (or those that are kids at heart, or who even just want to enjoy a beautiful setting), the Chattanooga Zoo is known as the “Best Little Zoo,” because it makes a real attempt to allow visitors to connect with the animals and the wildlife that they’re seeing, rather than just peering at animals behind plate glass before being hustled along by the crowd.

There are more than 300 animals living there, with more than 200 species, with a fair share of endangered species as well.

However, what’s really going to shock you is the price.

Adults are just $10 a ticket, and kids are just $7, making it by far one of the cheapest zoos in the entire country.

6. Hike Audubon Acres

Audubon Acres

If you’d rather get out of the city and see a little nature, but you want to do so in a way that’s totally convenient, maybe try Audubon Acres on for size.

There are more than five miles of hiking trails, making for an easy and not too challenging hike, and there are 130 acres along the South Chickamauga Creek.

The small visitor center has an archaeological museum, and there are even historic spots on the property — such as a a site significant to the Trail of Tears.

Plus, if you visit during the summer, you can hit the creek for canoeing, kayaking and swimming.

7. Stroll Through the Art District

Art District

If you want to enjoy a nice little slice of Chattanooga neighborhood, go to the Art District, which is easily accessible from downtown.

You’ll not only find what you probably typically think of as art, but also great restaurants and awesome views.

Perched on a hill overlooking the river, you’ll pass lovely handicrafts at various local stores, plenty of mouthwatering treats and even a cute little bed and breakfast.

A small spot, this area of the city is definitely worth visiting, even if it’s just for a few hours in the morning, lunch or a nice walk at night, if you want to stroll a bit before grabbing dinner at one of the district’s quaint restaurants.

8. Walk the River

Tennessee Riverpark

If you’d rather walk beside of the river, than be on it, you want to go to the Tennessee Riverpark.

One of the best green spaces in the city, it has 10 miles of beautiful waterfront.

You can even hop on one of the piers, if you like to fish, or you can watch the boats come in and out from the boat ramp.

In addition, the park is home to outdoor art pieces, and even a marsh that is great for birdwatching.

The end of the park is right within downtown Chattanooga, and you can take it all the way up to the Chickamauga Dam.

9. Visit the Tennessee Aquarium

Tennessee Aquarium

You wouldn’t think it, but Tennessee is home to the largest freshwater aquarium in the world, the Tennessee Aquarium.

Built a little over 20 years ago, the attraction is in town parts, one freshwater, and one saltwater.

It’s easily one of the most popular attractions in the city, and has all of the interesting and eclectic sea creatures that you’d expect from a world-class aquarium.

10. Climb Lookout Mountain

Lookout Mountain

Just like the river, Lookout Mountain is a can’t-miss when you’re in Chattanooga, as it practically looms over the city and partially separates the state from its southern neighbor, Georgia.

There’s a 4,100-foot-long walking trail with gorgeous landscaping and fantastic views of the entire city and its surroundings, including the river.

In addition, it’s set inside the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, so you can brush up on your Civil War history while you’re there.

This is where you’re going to get the best Instagram photos during your entire trip to Chattanooga, that’s for sure!

11. See Ruby Falls

Ruby Falls

Set inside of Lookout Mountain, Ruby Falls is inside a cave and highly fascinating.

Both the waterfalls and the caves are referred to as Ruby Falls, and the cave version is the deepest commercial cave in the country, and also the largest underground waterfall in the country, at 145 feet tall.

Of course, you can’t just go wondering around the caverns underground by yourself, but you can book a guided tour and check out Ruby Falls (both versions) for yourself.

In addition, there’s nearly always some kind of event or special occurrence going on there, so see what’s up before you go and plan to attend if it catches your eye.

12. Walk Walnut Street Bridge

Walnut Street Bridge

Again, Chattanooga sets a record for itself, and it’s both surprising and fascinating to hear.

This time, they boast the longest pedestrian bridge in the world.

It’s the Walnut Street Bridge, which at one point was going to be torn down.

It connects the southern and northern sides of the city, which, at the time of construction was a huge deal, as the two areas of Chattanooga were very racially segregated.

It was in the late 1970s that the bridge was closed to automobile traffic, and now it’s a great pedestrian bridge for awesome views, and some pretty fantastic events, like an annual wine tasting and annual country music festival.

Oh, and yet another fun fact — it’s the first non-military bridge on the Tennessee River.

13. Go Climbing in the City

High Point Climbing And Fitness

When you hear rock climbing, you’re probably thinking of going out to a mountain or somewhere in the wilderness to scale the side of a cliff.

One of Chattanooga’s more modern attractions, though, gives you the thrill of the climb, right within the convenience of the city.

High Point Climbing and Fitness is a rock climbing facility that features both indoor and outdoor climbing walls, that go up to 60 feet in the air.

It’s one of the largest fitness centers in the country, and can accommodate both novice and experienced climbers.

Not too sure of your skills? You can sign for a class and learn the ropes (quite literally!).

14. Explore Raccoon Mountain

Raccoon Mountain Caverns

You’re going to have to drive out of the center of the city for this one, but it may be worth it for the adventure.  Raccoon Mountain Caverns have more than five miles of mapped cave systems, and the cave is always expanding, people are always discovering new passageways and caverns and it’s just an overall fun activity for the whole family.

Beyond exploring the underground, you can enjoy go-karting or just chilling in the relaxed setting.

15. Play Ball

AT&T Field

What’s better in the summer than a baseball game? Not much.

Enjoy the great American past time even in a city where there’s no major league team, when you head to AT&T Field, where you can see the Chattanooga Lookouts, a minor league team that’s a Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins.

While you may wonder what the perks are of going to a minor league game over a major league game, there are actually quite a few.

Crowds are thinner, tickets are cheaper, seats are lower and you can have a great up-close-and-personal experience with the game.

16. Zip Down Lookout Mountain

Ruby Falls ZIPStream Aerial Adventures

If you’re headed to Lookout Mountain or Ruby Falls, make sure to stop at Ruby Falls ZIPStream Aerial Adventures.

You’ll get all the adrenalin you can handle when you’re zipping through the trees! The course isn’t just a zip line, though.

Instead, you’ll go through in-air obstacle courses, that require you to climb through the forest, using ladders, nets, bridges, tunnels and more.

It’s not only a fun family activity, but it’s also a great idea for a business retreat or trust activities for a group!

17. Create and Discover at This Museum

Creative Discovery Museum

Head to the Creative Discovery Museum if you have an eager learner that’s elementary school age.

This museum is specifically created for kids to explore and learn through play.

There are tons of activities all across the venue, from art lessons to science experiments to music time.

It’s all fun and all with a purpose, so you and your child can enjoy learning together, while still having an awesome time.

18. Visit Chattanooga National Cemetery

Chattanooga National Cemetery

If you’re not terribly worried about having a roaring good time filled with giggles and laughter, like what’ll ultimately happen at the Creative Discovery Museum, and are more into the solemn, scholarly, historic learning side of Chattanooga, you may appreciate a visit to the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Set on 120 acres, it was first established in 1863. It’s the largest national cemetery in the state, but that’s not the only thing that makes it interesting.

It’s also one of the few national cemeteries where you can see three different Civil War Battle sites — Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga.

19. Jump Out of a Plane

Chattanooga Skydiving Company

Okay, back to the adrenaline rushes and tons of fun! If you’ve always dreamed of skydiving, but never had the guts, this may be your lucky opportunity.

The Chattanooga Skydiving Company gives you a great tandem skydiving experience, as you’re strapped to an instructor before leaping from the plane.

You’ll get to see the Tennessee River Gorge, Lookout Mountain and the Sequatchie Valley, all from the very best seat in the house — the open air. You’ll have to drive about half an hour from downtown to get to the takeoff spot, but no worries.

You’re in great hands with this family that’s been teaching skydivers since 1960.

20. See Some Art

Hunter Museum Of American Art

If you visit the Bluff View Art District, you’ll want to stop in the Hunter Museum of American Art.

Established in 1952, the museum is set within a 1904 classical revival mansion that was designed by none other than the son of U.S. President James A. Garfield.

Much of the art you’ll see on display actually is from the Hudson River School.

Genres of art that you can view include modernism and American impressionism.

In addition to the galleries, which were expanded twice over the life of the museum, there are also lots of educational programs to choose from.

21. Smell the Roses

Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center

If you’re more of a plant person than someone who’s into animals or art, then head to the Reflection Riding Arboretum & Nature Center, where you can see tons of different varieties of not only plants, but also wild animals.

Lots of the plants on display are what you would see right within the southeastern United States.

There are 14 miles of trails, a boardwalk (where you can spot blue heron), a butterfly garden, children’s areas, canoes and even a library.

22. See Some More Art

Gallery 1401

But back to the art…Gallery 1401 is in the Southside neighborhood, and you’ll see a ton of different art styles and trends within its walls.

There are more than 40 artists on display, including some that are internationally recognized.

You’ll see classic works, impressionism, realism and more.

In addition, there are all kinds of artistic mediums as well, beyond your traditional paint on canvas.

See multimedia art, sculptures, hand-blown glass, photography exhibits, etc.

23. See Some Trains

Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum

The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum was built almost 50 years ago, and was part of the National Railway Historical Society.

There’s a reconstructed rail line, and you can even ride on the track, on a daily service that’s highly educational as well as fun.

24. Shop at Chattanooga Market

Chattanooga Market

Visiting farmers markets in various destinations can teach you a lot about the city you’re visiting.

Stop by the Chattanooga Market, an open-air pavilion filled with vendors selling not only farmers market-type items, but also arts and crafts.

There are 300 vendors, and thousands of people visit each weekend.

You can be assured that each and every item sold there is created, grown or hand-made by the person selling it, per the market rules.

25. Take Flight

Chattanooga Balloon Company

If you don’t want to jump out of a plane, at least see the city from up above, from the comfort of a hot air balloon.

The Chattanooga Balloon Company offers rides that are one mile long, and that take you as far as 10 miles, following the Tennessee River Valley.

Chattanooga

Chattanooga has charisma to spare. With world-class rock climbing, hiking, cycling and water-sports opportunities, it's one of the South's best cities for outdoorsy types. It's gorgeous, too: just check out those views from the Bluff View Art District! It's also remarkably eco-forward, with free electric buses, miles of well-used waterfront trails, and pedestrian bridges crossing the Tennessee River. All this makes it hard to credit its reputation in the 1960s as America's dirtiest city.

Why Go To Chattanooga

Situated along the Tennessee River and nestled among the mountains of Southeast Tennessee, Chattanooga has truly earned its nickname as the "Scenic City." Once named the most polluted city in America by the Department of Health, Chattanooga has experienced an urban revitalization over the past few decades, making sustainability a priority and giving the city a much-needed boost of diversity without losing touch of its small-town charm. Chattanooga is known as a historical hub, having served as a Civil War battlefield and the grand central station for southern railway travel in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, the city is a pioneer of different sorts, as one of the first cities in the U.S. to offer its citizens 2 gigabits per second (read: extremely speedy) internet service, and the first American city to have its own typeface, appropriately named "Chatype." Silicon Valley better watch its back.

Technological advancements aside, travelers of all types could spend days enjoying Chattanooga's diverse array of attractions. Adventurers can explore the nooks and crannies that lie within Lookout Mountain, history buffs can traverse terrain once inhabited by Civil War troops at  Chickamauga , engineers can marvel at restored trains (several of which are over 100 years old) at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and foodies can eat their way through the delectable North Shore district. Or, you can simply take a stroll along the city's riverwalk and catch a sunset atop the Walnut Street Bridge, one of the world's longest pedestrian bridges.

Chattanooga Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit Chattanooga is during the fall, from September to November. The end of summer peak season ushers in thinner crowds and cooler temperatures ranging from 40 to 80 degrees. The best reason to visit Chattanooga during the fall, however, is the season's colorful foliage. Experts say this is the most beautiful time to visit Chattanooga's plethora of natural attractions. Plus, RiverRocks, the multiweek outdoor adventure festival, is held in October. Travelers tend to steer clear of Chattanooga come wintertime, thanks to chilly temperatures and rain. However, various annual holiday events, such as the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum 's North Pole Limited, do draw some visitors. Spring is another attractive season, with temperatures becoming more moderate. Summer is the busiest season for tourism in Tennessee, which means you'll find the highest hotel prices, not to mention temperatures, this time of year.

Weather in Chattanooga

Data sourced from the National Climatic Data Center

What You Need to Know

You should bring the family  Many of the city's top attractions cater to children or offer kid-friendly events and programs. Along with the  Tennessee Aquarium , take your little ones to the Chattanooga Zoo, the amusement park and SOAKya Water Park at Lake Winnepesaukah and the Creative Discovery Museum, which was made exclusively for children.

Sustainability is key  Solar panels, zero-emission buses and locally sourced ingredients are all the norm in Chattanooga. You don't want to be caught throwing your recyclables in the trash bin.

Plan a fall visit  Chattanooga's fall foliage is not something to miss. Plus, during the summer, locals and visitors say the humidity is killer.

How to Save Money in Chattanooga

Ditch the car  Not only does Chattanooga have an affordable bike-share system, but the city offers a free shuttle that transports passengers throughout downtown where some of Chattanooga's biggest attractions are located.

Spring for a package  Many Chattanooga  hotels   offer package deals that include tickets to top attractions and other amenities not covered in standard room rates, such as free breakfast or parking.

Check the tourism website  Chattanooga's tourism site  offers free coupons to attractions, restaurants, tours and entertainment venues throughout the city.

What to Eat

Well-known for its natural wonders and ties to the Civil War, Chattanooga may not stand out to foodies as a must-visit destination at first glance. But at closer inspection, visitors looking for a great bite will see that there is much more to this town than fried chicken. Chattanooga's dining scene is filled with comfort dishes, yes, but it's also involved in the farm-to-table culinary movement. Many of Chattanooga's beloved local eateries source produce, meat and dairy products from farms within a 100-mile radius of town. Among the most notable is the upscale Public House , which severs Southern dishes and has long-standing relationships with local farmers and purveyors. Along with sourcing regional ingredients, Chattanooga prides itself on its large community of local eateries. You won't find a Starbucks on every block here.

Taco Mamacita  reigns supreme as the area's top Mexican joint, while  GOOD DOG  is the only restaurant of its kind in the city, offering nothing but hot dogs and sausages with loads of toppings. If hot dogs aren't enough to satisfy your carnivorous appetite, head to  Urban Stack Burger Lounge  for a variety of flavorful patties, including the Philly Cheesesteak Burger. For a great cup of joe, wander to  Rembrandt's  and indulge in anyone of its breads, French pastries or chocolates. The Italian eatery  Alleia  is run by Daniel Lindley, a Chattanooga native and five-time semifinalist for Best Chef in the Southeast by the James Beard Foundation.

When you're craving something sweet, sample some of the handcrafted ice cream from  Clumpies , referred to by locals as an "institution."

There's also the beer. Chattanoogans love beer. Held in March, Chattabrewga is Chattanooga’s premier craft beer festival, where 75 different types of brews are showcased from some of the country's most popular craft breweries. If you aren't in town for the festival, squeeze in  Brewhaus , Chattanooga's only German-American-style gastro pub or stop by the  Chattanooga Brewing Company .

And last but not least, MoonPies. MoonPies were invented in Chattanooga. For those unfamiliar, MoonPies are graham cracker marshmallow sandwiches covered entirely in melted chocolate. The name originated when a local coal miner asked a traveling salesman for a snack "as big as the moon" at the beginning of the 20th century. The traveling salesman brought the request back to the Chattanooga Bakery and thus MoonPies were born. Because of their low cost (5 cents!) and small size, they were bought up quickly and eventually sent to the front lines of World War II to give soldiers a taste of home. Today, you can find some at the MoonPie General Store in downtown Chattanooga.

Getting Around Chattanooga

The best way to get around Chattanooga is via public transportation or by bike. Chattanooga's public transportation system offers a free electric shuttle service that drops visitors off at various points of interest in the city, including the  Chattanooga Choo Choo  and the  Tennessee Aquarium . The city also offers the Chattanooga Bicycle Transit System, which has more than 40 stations spread throughout the downtown area and some in the North Shore district. If traveling by wheels isn't necessarily your cup of tea, then you won't miss much from simply walking. Chattanooga's downtown riverwalk snakes 13 miles along the Tennessee River and boasts numerous shops and restaurants, as well as popular attractions including the  Bluff View Art District , the Passage and the Walnut Street Bridge, which is one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the world. If you're looking to explore some of the famous natural attractions that Chattanooga has to offer, such as the  Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park , you'll need a car.

To get from the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) to your hotel, you can take a taxi, use a ride sharing service or take a shuttle bus, since getting around downtown Chattanooga doesn't require a car. Taxi rates are approximately $30 one-way from the airport to downtown Chattanooga. Additionally, ride-hailing services and cabs are available to take visitors throughout Chattanooga, but be forewarned: rates do add up.

Once considered to be the most polluted city in America, Chattanooga has since cleaned up and earned the rights to its nickname.
