Tucson is located in the north of the US-Mexico border  and is heavily influenced by the desert region in which it stands. It is a great place to visit when traveling on a budget in the USA. The local people are very friendly, the food is amazing and there are lots of cool attractions just waiting to be explored. From hiking a scenic trail to ogling stunning architecture, there is definitely no shortage of amazing things to do in Tucson.

Cheap Things to do in Tucson:

• Hike the Turquoise Trail , the historic walking tour of downtown Tucson. The hike is about 2.5 miles long that includes 23 historical landmarks of the city such as the 1850s Sosa-Carillo-Frémont House, the Pima County Courthouse, and the old Railroad Depot.
• Visit the Tucson Museum of Art  which features over 8,000 works of Western, Latin American and contemporary art. On the first Thursday of each month, admission is free from 5-8 p.m. 
• Explore the  Saguaro National Park trail . Try to avoid hiking here in the summer months. Visitors can see the different types of cactus on the trail.

15. Big Bear Lake, California

On the east of Los Angeles by the rugged snow-capped peaks of the San Bernardino Mountains sits a charming mountain town called Big Bear Lake. It is the best backpacking destination in the USA to witness panoramic views of skiable terrain. 

The view of San Bernardino National Forest and the mountain is like a scene from a movie. The stunning vistas of the alpine region towering with Ponderosa pines are such a splendor to hike along the forested path and water skiing. 

Cheap Things to do in Big Bear Lake:

• In winter you can enjoy sledding and tubing at Grizzly Ridge Tube Park and Big Bear Snow Play
• It’s a little expensive but for the cool perspective of such beauty with mountains, lakes, and deserts, you can book a helicopter tour or Big Bear Jeep Experience.
• Sit by the sapphire Big Bear Lake water, soaking in the sun. You can also bring your food and have a small picnic with your friends
• Hike along the rocky terrain or ride a horse or mountain bike following the Castle Rock trail. The view from t800 feet above sea level is gorgeous
• In autumn and spring, come to Boulder Bay Park to capture extra color and timeless nature
• If you’re here in the Fall season, please attend Oktoberfest, one of the highest-ranked celebrations in the USA.  

16. Death Valley, California

Just as the name sounds, Death Valley seems to be mysterious. Will I die reaching there? No, my friend , you will fall in love with it. It looks desolate wasteland but in reality, is one of the budget-friendly cities to travel to in the USA.

Driving out to Racetrack Playa on the lowest part of the USA at Badwater Basin outside of Alaska sits Death Valley National Park which also earned its name as Dark Sky Preserve. Remember, though it is unique but is a land of extremes with unbearable heat and biting cold resulting in unending drought.

• The most fun thing to do in Death Valley is go sandboarding or boogie board
• Drive straight through the valley to Badwater Basin to get the most shocking view called Dante’s view. You can also drive up Aguereberry Point Road.
• Camp in the remote regions of Death Valley – Eureka Sand Dunes and Racetrack Playa. Explore the Backcountry, spend the night and understand its ecosystem
• Hike to visit the Natural Bridge or Historic Mosaic Canyon near Stovepipe Wells and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes is so thrilling 

17. Red Feather Lakes, Colorado

Have you ever thought of cheap vacation destinations for couples in complete remoteness? 45 miles west of Fort Collins and in the heart of Roosevelt National Forest sits Red Feather Lakes, a charming and rustic mountain town of Colorado .

Its location at the elevation of 8,245 feet offers a dramatic outlook with a golden opportunity to explore. Snowshoeing, sleigh rides, ice skating, and cross-country skiing are popular options to try.

• Canoe or kayak or paddle board at Lake Hiawatha. The Hiawatha Park sits on a 241-acre land with mature trees, open space to walk, and a lake to have fun.
• How can you not fish at Red Feather Lakes? They have three public lakes with valid Colorado fishing licenses. 
• Enjoy the rustic town sitting over the horseback riding and enjoying the view. Come to Beaver Meadows Resort Ranch
• Go for a drive taking the west side of the Continental Divide and continuing to Fort Collins
• Invest in your health and book a session or attend a workshop or educational program with Shambhala Mountain Center, a Buddhist retreat center offering meditation and yoga classes.
• You do not need to keep your dog at home, bring him hiking on Lady Moon trailhead. Also, follow the North Lone Pine trail for an easy-breezy walk

18. Fort Collins, Colorado

Along the Cache, Ia Poudre River sits the famous destination Fort Collins which is also known as “FoCo” and is a beautiful college town in Colorado. Not only that, it is Colorado’s Craft Beer Capital. Interestingly, 70% of Colorado’s craft beer is manufactured herein. 

With 2.53 (violent crime rate per 1,000) and ample job opportunities, Fort Collins is one of the cheapest and safest cities to travel to in summer in America for students. Colorado State University and the Rocky Mountains are just miles away!

• Change your weekend plans and take the free tour at New Belgium Brewing Co. 
• Wander along the Cache La Poudre River watching fishes teeming in the water. This is one of the famous spots among locals.
• Appreciate local art and enjoy the walking tour at Downtown Fort Collins’ First Friday Art Walk. 
• Explore and soak the beauty at Benson Sculpture Garden. The garden has been recognized as – “ one of the 200 most important modern and contemporary art sites around the world”

19. Klamath Falls, Oregon

Klamath Falls is the most inexpensive place to travel in the USA to witness nature without any makeup. It sits on Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway, halfway between Lava Beds National Monument and Crater Lake.

Klamath Falls landscape, lakes, rivers, and forests are so dreamy! Mostly, the place is famous for hiking, fishing, biking, and soaking in peace. Also, the restaurants offer a true taste of Klamath Falls’s southern culture.

• How can you miss the beauty of Upper Klamath Lake? Stop by Moore Park which sits on 450-acre land offering a view of lush forest trails, towering pines, flying great bald eagles in the sky and complete peace all around.
• Beside the Klamath Falls sits Link River Trail where you can enjoy the peace to the fullest. You can take the gravel path to reach Upper Klamath Lake. On the way, you will spot hundreds of rare water birds. 
• Klamath Lake sits on 91,000 acres; you can sit by the lake and just enjoy the breathtaking views or arrange a small picnic with your friends
• Spend a night under the sky camping at Lake of the Woods Resort. The experience itself was very rejuvenating. Do not forget to roast marshmallows and enjoy the darkness.

Crossing coast to coast to explore America’s states without spending an arm and a leg is a debatable topic. However, Nomadic Matt, my inspirational character, proved it to be true. 

Backpackers and Budget travelers, welcome to blog on the cheapest places to visit in the USA, informing you how to travel on a budget and experience more.

So, here are the ways to travel cheaply without spending millions of dollars on exploring and traveling. I will break your expenses into fixed and variable expenditures.

Accommodation :  

Hostels or dorm rooms are your saviors. Also, you can try Couchsurfing. A dorm room with 4-6 beds usually costs between $35-50 USD per night depending on the city and time of your travel. Check out these useful tips about how to book cheap hotels .

On the other hand, Couchsurfing allows you to reside freely in exchange for any service requested by the homeowners. However, always remember to check reviews and stats before booking any one of them. 

Thankfully, the USA has diverse options in terms of food. Starting from seafood, and BBQ to healthy salad and organic smoothies, there is no singular food culture. Every place has different types of food options at varied rates.

A sandwich or fast food combo meal costs around $10 -$15 if you get it from roadside stalls. The same food is available at $30-$34 at mid-range casual restaurants. On the other hand, if you want to save money on food while traveling , you can cook your food at hostels free of cost.

Public transport

Taking a bus for a cross-country trip is not weird, the best way to save “dollars”. Traveling in buses or trains, or metros is the best way to meet new people, watch and witness amazing sights while keeping the budget fixed. 

However, the only disadvantage you might face while traveling on public transport is long journeys and no WiFi to work along the way. Though you cannot change the first part but upgrade your travel router to work along the way.

Now let’s know your variable expenditure – 

Expenditures, like buying gifts or eating food at a fancy restaurant or participating in paid fest and more, are called variable expenses. However, you cannot completely ignore them but surely reduce their frequencies to save ‘dollars’. 

To reduce expenses on variable expenditures you can follow these points –

Travel the U.S. for $30 A Day: The Ultimate Budget USA Road Trip

Budgeting for a road trip can be difficult. Food, gas, parking, groceries, restaurants, much-needed coffee stops, all adds up. Especially if you’re planning to take on a route as large as the entire United States. But traveling in a van is the perfect way to do a budget USA road trip.

We traveled the United States for three months in our converted camper van Phoebe. She’s nothing fancy–Just a 1994 Dodge Ram Van that we laboriously dismantled and converted one summer. She has a massive bed, kitchenette, and a table with a u-shaped bench. We set out to explore America’s National Parks and also to sample all the best (& underrated) American food .

& we spent more than we had originally planned.

I recorded every single transaction. From the $0.44 water refills to the $75 gas tank fill-ups so that you can have an educated guess on your own cross-country road trip expenses.

& so that you can understand exactly what van life costs before you make the leap and begin converting your own vehicle. Because there are tons of benefits to van life but it may not be as cheap as you think.

The Ultimate Budget USA Road Trip

Let’s talk logistics.

Where are you headed? Whether your planning to live in your van full time & just want a look at the average expenses of van life or you’re planning an epic cross-country road trip & want to know how much to have in the bank before you go…this post will shed some light on the subject.

But be aware that traveling in cities tends to be more expensive than exploring the more rural areas of the USA. We did a bit of both on this trip.

Best Way to Travel America on a Budget? Van life.

Okay. I might be biased. But van life has changed the road trip game. It’s made it cheaper. More comfortable. & helped me to travel more off-the-beaten-path. But van life isn’t always as glamorous as it’s made out to be. & if you’re on the fence you should test out van/RV travel before you invest in your own rig.

My favorite RV rental company is RVShare. They have rentals all over the U.S. & are a very affordable option ( Van rentals can be so overpriced ). Another perk…they are locally owned RVs which means they are cozier than a generic rental and you’re supporting small businesses.

Our USA Road Trip Budget

We’ve been full-time traveling on a budget for quite some time now. I actually wrote a blog post all about how we traveled the world on a budget of $50 a day . But the U.S. is an expensive place to travel. & we wanted to get the full American Foodie Road Trip experience which meant we would be eating many meals in restaurants.

Our goal for the cross country road was to spend around $50 a day for the both of us.

Spoiler: We missed our mark a little bit. It was a lofty goal. Considering we drove over 18,000 in a vehicle that only got 13ish miles to the gallon.

But honestly, we were pretty damn close. & considering all the amazing food we got to try along the way…100% worth it.

What We Actually Spent on Our Cross Country Road Trip

Let’s break it down item by item. This is where our money went on our 3-month USA road trip.

That comes to a grand total of around $29 per person. About $720 over our total intended budget.

Food & gas were the bulk of our spending since we spent most of our free time exploring National Parks or people-watching in cities.

How We Saved Money on Our Cross Country Road Trip

First, let’s talk about the things we did well.

We NEVER stopped for coffee on the road . Which was painfully difficult sometimes. But I did the calculations and we saved around $500 simply by using our French press every morning instead of hitting the coffee stands.

We cooked the majority of our meals ( despite what our restaurant costs say ) inside the van . A major perk of van living. Groceries are just so much cheaper than eating out.

We used GasBuddy to find the cheapest gas available. When you’re living life on the road gas is a major expense. Especially when your “home” is a gas-guzzling 13mpg (if you’re lucky) tank. We saved on average $10 a fill-up just by choosing gas strategically.

We got a great credit card. Specifically, with gas rewards. We use the Bank of America card Cash Rewards Card and it gave us 3% cashback on gas. Which ended up being about $70 in earnings!

We got the A merica the Beautiful Pass. For $80 it gives you access to every single National Park and Monument in the United States. If you plan on visiting even just 3 of the major national parks it’s worth the money.

We also refused to pay for parking unless ABSOLUTELY necessary and Stealth camped all across the United States. If you’re looking for tips on Stealth Camping you’ll find them here.

& now let’s look at the ways you can spend less money on your road trip across America.

Tips For Spending Less on your Budget-Friendly USA Road Trip

We did a fairly good job at keeping our costs low. But there are a few things we could have done differently on our cross-country road trip to save us even more money!

1. Pick Grocery Stores Strategically

We just shopped wherever was convenient. We didn’t bother learning the budget chains across America & definitely spent more money at fancy organic places like Sprouts and Publix.

2. Eat Out Less Often

Obviously, our restaurant costs were huge. If you want to save more money on the road just cook more meals inside the van. It has a kitchen after all!!

I don’t regret spending the money we did on food across America because I discovered my love for Southern Food. Seriously. If you splurge anywhere…make it the south.

3. Cut out Alcohol

You don’t see it on the budget breakdown but hidden in those grocery and restaurant bills are copious amounts of local beer and cocktails. Post-hiking beers, nightcaps, and brewery stops after a long day of driving. We spent about $775 on alcohol. Pretty much the exact amount we went over-budget.

Cut out ( or cut down ) on alcohol consumption to save a considerable chunk of change.

Planning your budget for a USA road trip is difficult without seeing a budget-breakdown from other travelers. We spent $60 a day or $30 per person per day on our cross-country road trip.

Chicago to Los Angeles Road Trip, Route 66

This stretch is a historic route and one of the most famous trips around America. Route 66 deserves a try if you want to drive part way across the country on a 2 week cross country RV trip.

If you don’t have a vehicle at your disposal, you’ll need to rent one. It’s practically impossible to rent a car in the US for less than $40/day and it’s really hard to find a deal for an RV for under $100/night. So this will affect your road trip America cost – but it is a necessary expense.

Add in spending on gas, accommodation, food, etc and your cost of cross country road trip will quickly add up , making what seemed like a great vacation idea seem like a rather expensive getaway.

We’re always crunching numbers and asking ourselves, “how much does it cost to travel around the world?” But we really had no idea of the road trip across America cost!

Planning for our trip, we knew that sticking to a small daily budget was going to be tough, but we wanted to see if we could keep our road trip across America cost to $125/day for two people (Spoiler: we almost did!).

How Long Does it Take to Drive Across America?

It is totally up to you to decide how long does it take to drive across the US. Each of the road trip routes we have suggested can be completed comfortably in two weeks . However, there are innumerable things to do along the way and the States is a big country so you can take as long as you like.

We met people who had been on the road for years, making their way slowly across the country. So, as you can imagine, there are no hard and fast rules to answering how long does it take to drive across America – the decision is up to you!

But how long does it take to drive across America non-stop anyway? If you weren’t in it for the journey and were just trying to zoom from coast to coast as quickly as possible, you could do it in 35-45 hours. Some people even take it a step further and take on the 48 states in 10 days route . This is a surefire way to check off tons of states on your list but we much prefer to enjoy the journey as much as the end destination.

Is it Safe to Drive Across America?

Of course! Always be sure to educate yourself on state driving laws while following the speed limit and being aware of your surroundings. There are A LOT of large transport trucks on American highways so be mindful of passing etiquette and you’ll be good to go.

Cross-Country Road Trip Cost

Here is a detailed breakdown of our cross-country road trip cost to help you answer the question of “how much does it cost to drive across the country?” It is based on our 16 days 3,000 mile/4,500kms road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles .

If you are wondering “How much does it cost to drive across the country?” the first thing to consider is the cost of driving itself. 

The cost of driving from Chicago to Los Angeles was by far the biggest percentage of our overall USA road trip budget . We knew that we had to find a cheap way to get around or this USA road trip ideas would quickly be thrown out the window.

RV Rental – $610 ($38/day)

Luckily, we were able to use some of the tips and tricks we learned while traveling around Australia to determine how much it would cost to travel across America. Then apply them to help our 2 week cross country RV trip cost in the US.  

We were lucky to have been able to find a GREAT DEAL for a campervan rental at just $39/night.

While it wasn’t as good as $1/day, the deal offered us a longer rental, giving us more time on the road , and a brand new (hence the factory relocation) massive RV for our cross-country road trip. It was big enough for 7 people, so having all the space for just 2 of us felt like absolute luxury. 

The total for 16 days/15 nights added up to $610 of our cross country road trip cost.

Fuel – $682 ($42/day)

Gas ended up costing a bit more than we would’ve liked on our 2 week road trip across America, adding up to almost 30% of our total travel budget . With 3,000 miles (around 4,500 km) ahead of us on our 2-week road trip, we knew that we’d need around 6 tanks of gas to get us from Chicago to Los Angeles , but we underestimated the cost of gas across the country and our RV’s efficiency on the road. How much does a cross country road trip cost? More than we thought as far as fuel was concerned.

Propane = $60 ($4/day)

When budgeting for our trip, we completely forgot to account for the cost of propane . It didn’t add up to a lot, which was surprising considering that the stove, fridge, furnace, and water heater in our RV were all powered by propane. All things considered, it was a small drop in a big bucket but should be accounted for if you’re the designated road trip USA planner.

Accommodation Costs = $179 ($12/day)

Despite the fact that our RV was completely self-sustainable (it was equipped with a shower, toilet, and a full-size kitchen), we weren’t able to spend more than 2-3 days away from an RV park during our trip.

To our greatest surprise, RV parks in the US weren’t as cheap as we expected. We planned on spending $10-15/night for a powered site, but in reality, we never found anything for less than $30/night. It was yet another thing that added more than we thought to our United States road trip cost.

On nights when we didn’t need to be plugged in, we followed seasoned RV’ers advice and parked in Walmart parking lots or enjoyed being away from it all by finding an isolated spot in the middle of a forest road just off of our trip routes.

Food Costs = $339 ($21/day)

To keep our cross country road trip cost down, we choose not to eat out on this trip and cooked most of our meals in the RV . But we didn’t deprive ourselves.

We stocked up on fresh fruits and veggies, good quality meats, and nutrient-rich ingredients. Let’s face it, American groceries tend to be a bit more expensive than what we had been used to in Costa Rica so we had to keep our food expenses in check. Since our American road trip budget didn’t allow for daily meals out, we made sure to cook up a storm and make a big deal out of our meals.

We drank wine, enjoyed some beers, and even splurged on desserts! Needless to say, we weren’t starving throughout our trip and our food and drinks expenses reflected that.

Cost of Supplies

Rv supplies – $292 ($18/day).

It cost us a few hundred dollars to stock up on various supplies for the RV . There were a few road trip accessories that we can’t believe we didn’t think of before our trip and some bedding and kitchen supplies.  

Cruise America offers to rent bedding and crockery to guests for their USA road trips but we figured that we could find much better quality stuff if we were to buy it ourselves for our 2 week cross country RV trip. And we did!

At the end of the trip, we took all the supplies up to Oksana’s parent’s house in Canada. One day, we’ll dig them up from storage in the basement and use them for another drive across America! 

How much does a road trip cost? A lot less when you already have the supplies from a previous trip!

Mobile Phone – $60 ($4/day)

To stay connected on the road we purchased a 30-day 10GB mobile data plan from T-Mobile for $60 . It was a pricey investment and one that we completely forgot to account for at the beginning of planning a road trip across the States, but being able to stay connected and keep up with our work while on the road warranted the expense. 

A great alternative, which we didn’t know about it at the time, would have been a Solis Hotspot . Solis Hotspot offers flexible data plans , including Unlimited Data plans for heavy users or a Pay Per Use plan at just $9/1GB ideal for someone who just wants to stay connected and keep up with emails/messages or spends hours on social media while on this trip.

Cost of Activities – $160 ($10/day)

We didn’t spend a ton of money on activities throughout our road trip across America . Cost was factored into many of the things we did. 

We splurged on a Cog Railway ticket to the top of Pikes Peak, because hiking up the mountain wasn’t an option in my condition , and our 30 foot RV wouldn’t have made it up the winding roads either. Luckily, it was a great journey and money well spent.

National Parks Pass – $80

Another expense that we incurred on the trip was the cost of a yearly National Parks Pass ($80) . We got lucky with our timing as the first week of our trip coincided with the Annual National Parks Week , which gave us access to all National Parks across the country for free.

But by the time we got down to Arizona and California, the deal was off and the steep price at the Grand Canyon and at the Joshua Tree National Park made the $80 we paid for the pass completely worth it.

We think that $80 for an annual park’s pass was very reasonable. Especially considering they were some of the highlights of our American road trip. You can pre-purchase your National Park’s Pass here .

2 Week Road Trip USA – Total Cost – $2,382 ($149/day)

Our road trip across America cost us $2,382, or an average of $149/day between both of us for a 16-day road trip across the US. 

It’s more than the $125/day that we planned on for our USA road trip budget, but we’re not kicking ourselves for it. Our estimate for how much would it cost to travel across America was a bit off, but we had a great experience despite a bit of increased road trip cost.

Looking back on our spending patterns, we realized that the biggest cost drivers were RV rental and gas . And while it might be possible to reduce the daily gas costs by staying on the road for longer and spreading the cost of gas over more days, the increase in daily RV rental would probably offset that.

• If you’re driving your own car or an RV get it serviced prior to your USA road trip. Your RV or car rental agency will do this for you but you can still check your oil and tire pressure regularly while you’re on the road for better fuel efficiency.

• When it’s hot out roll down the windows instead of using A/C for better fuel economy.
• Choose eco-friendly accommodation options , and restaurants while on the road. Try camping or staying in national parks like we did, and shopping for food at local farmers markets.  
• Avoid single-use plastics and minimize packaging by using reusable grocery bags and collapsible containers when you need to restock food and refreshments. 
• Don’t forget to invest in a good reusable water bottle.
• Bring your friends! It’s always better to travel with a full car or RV. A five-person vehicle is so much more eco-friendly and cost-effective than traveling with a couple of two-seaters.

Excellent article. I was wondering what it was costing you to travel around. I know in New Zealand I got a great deal on Toyota Space Wagon and it was very cheap. Obviously your RV was much larger and better equipped but it’s still fairly expensive it would seem.

We never paid for RV parks or stuff either, we used to sneak into hostels and use their showers (I was young and on a budget so forgive me)!

But I remember the freedom of travelling around in the car and the complete freedom was an amazing feeling. I have been wondering how a road trip across America would compare to my recent trips to Uzbekistan and other more average priced destinations. It seems that the price is comparable if there are two people travelling.

We know we didn’t get the best deal on the campervan itself, so that’s a cost we can improve on, but the rest of it really just comes down to the price of gas and groceries. That’s really where the bulk of the costs comes from. Also, if you don’t have a large RV with a toilet and/or shower and don’t need to dump gray/black water, then there is really no need to stay in RV parks in the US either. There are tons of truck stops along the highways where you can actually shower and use the toilet for free or for next to nothing. Unfortunately, that wasn’t an option for us. At least not with this RV.

Thanks for sharing! I would love to do a road trip across the US in the next few years, and may look at doing an RV. My husband and I are doing a short RV trip from Darwin, Australia in a few weeks, and we learnt that it’s definitely not cheap – especially when we didn’t want to use Wicked, plus needed a guaranteed Auto. (Luckily as a travel blogger I managed to get a good discount!)

We found Apollo to be great in that part of Australia. They had some great $1/day deals from Darwin to Perth when we looked into it. If you end up doing more road trips in US or in Australia, look into Imoova – great rates on relocations in both Australia and the US.

My friend told me about how RV’ing is a huge culture down in the United States, and that it is quite common to park at Walmart parking lots overnight to reduce costs. I thought he was just kidding about that, but you have confirmed that it is not the case. I would have assumed you would get ticketed or towed if you did that.

Also, you can overnight at some large truck stops, some casinos, and our state parks and national parks are very reasonably priced, but some of the more popular ones are reserved up to a year ahead. For self-contained (no hook up)/boondock/’dispersed’ camp sites, there are many free places in the western part of the country–BLM (Bureau of Land Management) and COE (Corps of Engineers). Campendium is a good resource to find these.There are also apps where you can find pump outs and potable water to refill your tanks, without staying in an expensive RV park.

We usually travel on a budget of $100/day between both of us, which isn’t that high at all! On this trip, we went a bit over budget, which sometimes happens. Luckily, we are able to offset more expensive trips like this one with cheaper destinations and make sure that we stick to our $100/day budget on average for the year!

Sounds wonderful! We have recently retired and are really wanting to travel west, being from Illinois, but we always thought the RV would be way out of our budget. But, when you consider hotel rooms and restaurants in a car(even a fuel efficient one like ours), the RV rental makes a lot of sense. I always see them parked at Wal-Mart’s and truck stops. One question? Can we make it to Los Angeles, up the Pacific Coast Highway, Yosemite and back to Illinois on Hwy 80 in 2 weeks?

@SALLY Miller : I don’t see why not ,but here’s the thing , why would you want to put yourself in time constraints ? Taking you on that trip is about 5300 miles dividing that into 14 days is about 350 miles a day, taking you to Portland Or. and back. I’d try to take more time if it were me .

Did you ever drive and stay in the cities at that RV? Is that possible to go through Chicago by the way?

We mostly stayed in National Parks or in designated RV sites. There were some in the cities, but we did not stay in Chicago. We started our trip just outside of Chicago, so we did not need to drive through the city. But, there is no reason why you would not be able to go on the highway with your RV.

Just read your post on your drive across America from Chicago to LA. I have been wanting to take my family on a cross country trip for along time. I was just looking at RV rentals and chose Cruise America like the one you used. What am I missing? A standard RV rental for cross country trip both ways from GA to CA is over $4000 even with a 50% off promo code. You don’t just have to pay for the rental, you have to pay for mileage also. I was expecting a cross country budget for my family of 6 (me, my wife, and 4 daughters all under 9 years) to be around $5K-6K . The cost of RV rental would almost double that budget estimate and puts this trip out of reach. How did you rent an RV for 16 days for $600+?

Hi Will, we mention our “trick” in the article a bit. We found a great relocation deal for our road trip. These are quite common and are offered by many RV providers, but they do require you to be somewhat flexible with your dates and sometimes even destinations. A relocation deal is a special discount offered on one-way rentals when the rental company really needs to get an RV from one destination to another. Instead of hiring a worker to drive the RV to the desired destination, they put the vehicle up for rent, specifying the dates and route that needs to be taken. It’s worth looking through the deals if you have flexibility. Good luck with your search!

Hi Dario, yes regular price for an RV will be much higher. We got ours through a relocation deal. It was a one-way rental deal with a particular route and for specific dates. Check their relocation deals and see what they might have on offer right now. Keep in mind that you will need to stay flexible with dates and route if you want to score a deal like we did.

I have an interesting situation. Our leased car has 7000 miles left over due to lock down. So only gas cost is there. It is a suv large size very comfortable but gas consumption will be high. The first thought to interject itself when I think of the words “ travel cheap in the USA ” is, well, impossible. For many currencies, trying to live in the dollar's world can be pretty difficult. But based on my own experiences, I can tell you it is not.

I've been in road trips where we barely had money for gas but saw the whole state. Trips from North to South: New York, DC, Oregon,  California  etc. All of that with limited budget .

I even know friends who lived in Hawaii with 0 money, and somehow lived to tell the tale (check out How much does a trip to Hawaii cost? Learn different ways to save money ). 

So, maybe, okay, it is possible. Let’s be clear. It is not a cheap travel destination in the grand scheme of things...but that doesn’t mean you can’t figure out  how to travel cheap in the USA .

How to travel cheap in the USA? Tips for any kind of trip 

Two things to consider for your trip — the USA is enormous and the dollar is stronger than most other currencies. Given that, I suggest being very realistic about your budget and time. 

There is a great article  about some basic information everyone should know before they land in the US. Make sure to read up on essentials like this before coming to avoid unnecessary expenses.

Now here's some basic tips that can help you save money and travel cheap in the US — no matter what type of trip you take. 

Transport  — Sign up and use a credit card for airline points. If you’re planning a couple months in advance, you can easily earn enough points to pay for a couple flights. Just make sure to take advantage of a killer deal when you first sign up.

Housing — With housing, the easiest way to save money is to not spend it — so doing volunteer work with Worldpackers in major cities, make friends with people who have houses, stay with friends, and try camping if you’re going to be on a road trip.

Spending the night on the bus or sleeping in your car will also save you cash, but it's not for everyone.

Food — I recommend trying to cook all the time, and drink as little as possible. My experiences traveling for the last 3.5 years have been that the main costs were food and housing, but there are awesome ways to be cheap in both of those areas. 

Let's take a deeper look at each topic.

How to save money with transport in the US

Flying to New York city is a great start, and it’s normally cheaper than other cities in the US. (LA could be the same if you’re coming from the other side). 

From NYC, you can plan your next stop to any major city that interests you. Worldpackers has some great suggestions on the cheapest places to travel in the US right now. 

This type of trip offers you flexibility since bus (and train) fares don’t need to be booked far in advance. It’s also worth checking air travel since flights between major airports can be as low as 50$. Check Southwest for cheap deals, and set alerts on a website like Kayak to get low fare notifications.

Greyhound is the biggest bus company in the US, but Megabus has a fare finder feature that will show you cheap destinations. Another useful website is Comparabus , which shows you options from all bus companies offering the route you’re looking for.

When you’re choosing which city to visit, check your options with public transport and walking. 

If you can skip a city like LA (which doesn’t have much public transportation), you’ll save some money by avoiding Uber and taxi fares. Walking is one of the best ways to get to know a city without spending any money, and can cause you to stumble upon some of the best views.

Another answer for how to travel cheap in the USA is to use a CityPASS . You pay one price for all of the most popular attractions in a city. They are available for places like Chicago, Southern California, New York City, Atlanta, and more. It can save you 30-40% on entry prices.

Another important things to travel cheap in the USA:

• Avoid flying on holidays and weekends. 
• Try to travel with just a carry-on since this can save you 30-40$ each time you fly. My favorite carry-on bag for shorter trips of 1-2 months is from Cotopaxi. 
• Plan your travel around major cities and use buses, trains, and planes.

How to choose a good affordable accommodation

As with any trip, the more time you have, the cheaper you can travel since you’ll have more flexibility . BUT since you’re staying longer, you’ll end up spending more. This problem can be solved if you have a free place to stay.

When traveling between cities, I like to stay with friends as much as possible since hotel costs can add up quickly. In large cities I usually do Couchsurfing. Unfortunately hostels aren’t very common in the US, but it’s still worth taking a look as there are some options.

Another option to consider is to do a volunteer program. This is a cheap, simple, and awesome way to experience life in the US. Worldpackers has some really great options like permaculture projects ,  farms , holistic centers ,  hostels and more!

Centering your trip around volunteer experiences is the best way to travel on a low budget . You meet real people, experience the culture, and get to know an area without having to pay for lodging and most of your food.

Even expensive places like Hawaii and amazing tropical destinations can be affordable. Plus, you might meet road people to travel or stay with later which can help you save money on your trip as well.

How to have cheap meals in the trip

Eating is another big part of budgeting, and an important part of experiencing new places. When you’re not spending money on an important food experience, try to cook yourself. 

The USA has many cheap grocery stores including Aldi, Winco, Walmart, Grocery Outlet, and even the Dollar Tree where you can buy ingredients and cook at the hostel or other project in the US you are located in. 

You can also eat out (as cheaply as possible). 

It’s not healthy, but the dollar menu from McDonalds and cheaper items from Taco Bell, etc. can actually be a good way to have a cheap meal on the road. Just be very careful of which items you pick since fast food can easily cost you much more than cooking yourself, and as much as a nicer meal out. 

Drinking can also be a big cost. It's an essential part of enjoying life for most people, and I'm totally on board with that. However, if you really want to travel on a low budget, consider drinking only on special occasions, and finding ways to have fun without alcohol.

Extra: do a Road Trip, save money and make memories

The other type of trip you can take to travel cheaply in the US is a road trip, either using someone’s car and sharing gas or sharing the expense of a car rental. I like to use RoadTrippers to plan my trip because it gives super easy access to tourist attractions, hiking, camping, and your general route. 

This is a really fun and potentially cheap way to see the US with a lot of flexibility. You can focus on natural parks, the coast, hiking — whatever interests you. 

If you don’t have a friend in the US with a car or have a car yourself, a volunteer experience is a great way to meet people to travel with later on. There are some other choices as well:

• Check Facebook groups for ride sharing like Road Trip Buddies USA 2021 or Friends Across America.
• Make new friends through Instagram by messaging people who are living on the road.

I’ve personally met new people this way, and traveled in a van making new friends. It doesn’t always work out, but it’s one avenue that you can check out when you’re making your plans. 

Ride-sharing, hitchhiking, and meeting up with strangers do have certain risks so always be aware, communicate what you’re doing with others, and listen to your gut.

In my experiences, a lot of people living this lifestyle are hoping to make friends with the same interests and are open to traveling together for short periods. 

Traveling in a van is also a great way to save money. You save on food by cooking at home, don’t have to pay for parking (if you’re savvy), and have great flexibility.

If you decide to rent a car, there are some awesome ways you can save money and travel in the US by avoiding paying for parking in big cities, using free camp-sites, and cooking yourself. 

You can also consider using a car relocation service . These have tighter time frames, but can be a great way to get paid to go from place to place.

On a few separate occasions, I’ve taken road-trips around Oregon and California to camp and see national parks. If you’re interested in camping, it’s an awesome way to travel cheaply with friends. • Walmart provides free overnight parking.
• Free camp on BLM land, National forests, and State forests. Just give it a google to make sure you find out the exact restrictions for each situation.

In the end, there are many ways to travel on a budget to the US . It may not be a cheap destination, but there are many travel hacks if your are wondering how to travel cheap in the USA.

The best way is up to you, but hopefully some of these tips can make your dream experience possible.

According to data pulled from Priceline 's top 100 U.S. destinations, the 10 destinations below offer the most affordable average daily rates at hotels at all star levels. So, get wandering — without breaking the bank. These are the cheapest places to travel in the U.S.

1. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Head to Oklahoma's capital — nicknamed the Modern Frontier — for Western cowboy culture, working stockyards and oil wells, a surprisingly buzzy arts scene, and hotels averaging just $89.47 per night. It's an especially low price for a destination with a slew of new improvements and attractions like the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, 70-acre Scissortail Park, streetcar lines, and more. There are also museums , including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum , Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and Oklahoma City Museum of Art, but don't miss the opportunity to attend a horse show in the Horse Show Capital of the World — many are free or priced very low.

All Red Roof Inn hotels and motels are easily distinguishable thanks to their red roof, which gives this budget US motel chain its name. The brand covers more than 500 locations across the US , most of which are southern and eastern parts of the country.

Like Motel 6, Red Roof Inn is also pet-friendly and a great option if you are traveling with your loyal animal companion.

8. Econo Lodge

Econo Lodge is another great option for a budget traveler seeking for a great value. It has almost 1000 locations across the US , most of which are located conveniently very close to major roads you will find yourselves on during your road trip.

All Econo Lodge locations offer free breakfast that will give you the energy you need for another long day spent traveling and exploring.

9. Jameson Inn and Suites

Jameson Inn is a good budget-friendly option and boasts over 120 properties in 14 different states, mostly in the Midwest . They offer an assortment of amenities, such as continental breakfast, free HBO, and a fitness center. The rooms all have a microwave and refrigerator, and they offer the typical hair dryers, iron and ironing board, and coffee/tea makers.

Unlike most budget Inns, they provide live music in the bar area and allow vaping in designated areas. For travelers who are interested, they sell e-cigarettes and eLiquid, which is the fluid used to fuel the electronic cigarette. However, smoke-free rooms are available for motorists. They advertise the properties as convenient whether you are spending one night, or you plan a lengthier stay for business or vacation. The average cost is $55.00 to $83.00. 

They are pet-friendly and offer weekend and Valentine specials. The company has been in business since 1987, but it only began franchising in 2012. Headquarters are in Atlanta, Georgia. These motels are a good option for budget-weary travelers who want comfort, convenience, and a smattering of Southern hospitality. Free parking in these and all other motels helps to keep the budget on track.

10. Ramada by Wyndham

Ramada by Wyndham is a hotel chain that owns and manages all types of budget-friendly properties all over the world. 

Precisely because of that, this chain offers uncountable possibilities to all kinds of travelers across the globe. From solo travelers, to families, or couples there is always an option that meets everyone’s needs. 

The standard room offers amenities such as a flat-screen TV, free WiFi and a 24 hour front desk to help make your stay safer and more satisfying. 

Some properties also feature pools, children’s playgrounds, restaurants and -sometimes- free parking and a decent free breakfast. This depends on the continent and the city you are heading to.  

The hotel chain constantly offers great deals to their loyal clientele. As of now, if you are in the States, you can earn a free night if book, at least, 3 nights at one of the thousands properties they have in the territory. 

So, it works like this: if you stay three or more consecutive nights at a hotel by Wyndham you will get 7,500 points after the third night. Then you can redeem your points for a free night. Even if you stay only one or two nights you can also earn some points.

11 Cheap Places to Travel on the US Dollar

It’s never been easier to travel with almost no money . While post-COVID “revenge travel” has driven up prices in the short term, those are already starting to drop back down to pre-pandemic levels. And, with the spread of the sharing economy, plentiful cheap flights , and access to budget accommodation, getting away has never been more affordable.

If you’re an American, the strong dollar has made many places very cheap (or at least cheaper) to visit. While that’s not great for other folks, it is good for us Americans, as we’re getting the best exchange rates we’ve had in years. And although absolute prices are up, you’re still getting a ton of value right now.

While there are lots of great destination options, I wanted to list a few of my favorites. These are places I think are the most interesting, fun, and easy to get to, and offer excellent value for your money.

Costa Rica is my favorite Central American country. Though it’s one of the most expensive in the region, your money will still go far here. It also strikes a balance between budget-friendly and safe , while still offering plenty of amazing sights and activities.

In this magical place, there is a ton to see and do . You’ll find cloud forests, endangered turtles, incredible surfing, towering volcanos, epic white-water rafting , fantastic nature preserves, deep-sea diving, and some of the happiest and nicest people around.

And on the budget travel side, you’ll only need about $50 USD per day, if you use hostels and buses and cook your own food; you’ll also be able to do a few budget activities, like snorkeling or hiking trips. As a bonus, flights from the US are also very cheap. If you’re flexible, you can find round-trip flights for under $250 USD.

On a mid-range budget of $125 USD per day, you can stay in an Airbnb, eat out for all your meals, take the occasional taxi to get around, enjoy more nights out, and do more paid activities (like guided tours, surf lessons, and museum visits). In short, you won’t want for anything on this budget.

Vietnam is one of the cheapest countries in an already budget-friendly region. If you budgeted $25-30 USD per day, you would want for little. Hostels are just a few bucks a day, and you can get delicious street food for as little as $1 USD. (You can visit the country comfortably quite comfortably for $50-75 USD per day if you’re looking for more luxury.)

Be sure to spend some time in the hectic capital of Hanoi , and visit HaLong Bay when you’re in the north.

In the south, don’t miss the Chu Chi Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City (tunnels used by the Viet Cong during the war with the US). They offer an eye-opening look at the conflict.

For some adventurous activities, like canyoning and cliff jumping, head to Da Lat. If you’re looking for beaches, Nha Trang and Mui Ne should be at the top of your list!

Not only is Romania an underrated destination in Europe , but it’s also a budget-friendly one. Bucharest is a modern, up-and-coming capital, and the entire Transylvania region is breathtaking. Brasov, my favorite city there, offers lots of history ( including the infamous Bran Castle, known as “Dracula’s Castle” ). Transportation is cheap, and both ridesharing and hitchhiking are common. It’s a huge country, too so you can easily spend a few weeks and still just scratch the surface. In fact, I love it so much that I used to run tours there!

Backpackers can comfortably enjoy their time here for as little as $35-40 USD per day, which is a steal in Europe. And if you want to splurge and stay in hotels, eat out more, and enjoy a few drinks, you can easily do that for under $100 USD per day (or less).

Now that Romania is a (partially) part of the Schengen Area and there are no border checks via sea or air, I suspect the country will become more popular. That means more people and higher prices, so don’t wait to visit!

While India has always been a cheap country, with the US dollar doing so well, it’s even cheaper! You can get by on as little as $25-30 USD per day — often less! Mouthwatering meals can be found for under $2 USD, and accommodation is just $5-10 USD per night, depending on where you are.

Even if you go for mid-range accommodation and food, you’ll be hard-pressed to spend more than $50 USD per day unless you’re staying at fancy resorts — and even they are quite affordable! While flights to India can be expensive, once you arrive, everything is a bargain.

Be sure not to miss the epic Taj Mahal , the laid-back beaches of Goa, the holy city of Varanasi , and sweeping metropolises like New Delhi and Mumbai.

Argentina is brimming with history, culture, wine, football, and outdoor wonders like Patagonia . It’s one of my favorite countries in South America. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is considered one of the liveliest cities in the world. (Most people speak English, which makes it easier to get around.) I’ve never drunk so much wine or eaten as much steak as I did here (which blew my budget, but it was worth it!).

The only problem is the rampant inflation, so prices are always in flux (especially now that their current leader is making some sweeping changes). But even with that, you can still get by on around $40-50 USD per day by staying in hostels and sticking to cheap and free activities like museum visits, hiking, and free walking tours.

Patagonia is the main draw here, offering stunning landscapes and world-class hiking. Nature lovers will also want to visit Iguazú Falls , the largest waterfall system in the world! And while guided hikes cost upwards of $450 USD for a multiday trek, that’s still super cheap considering it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m not a big hiker or camper but even I thought it was amazing!

Safaris, wineries, mountains, and an endless coastline that is perfect for road trips. That’s South Africa. As a backpacker or budget traveler, this country is an amazing destination to visit as there are a lot of work opportunities as well as plenty of adventurous activities (and some great hiking) to keep you busy.

While it’s true that South Africa struggles with corruption and petty crime , it has a booming tourism industry and a growing backpacker and digital nomad scene. It’s an amazing place to road trip too.

With $50-60 USD per day, you’ll be able to enjoy the amazing beaches and laid-back lifestyle that makes South Africa so appealing. While there are definitely cheaper places on the continent, you’ll get a lot of value here.

Don’t miss hiking up Table Mountain or visiting the penguins when you’re in Cape Town . And if you’re looking for a world-class safari experience, head to Kruger National Park!

Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the world. The people are so incredibly welcoming, and even after a long absence between visits , I still found it to be one of the best destinations in Southeast Asia: affordable, friendly, and safe.

Prices have increased a little over the years, but not by much (it’s still cheaper than Thailand). Backpackers can easily get by for $45-50 USD or less per day. Street food is cheap and delicious (Phnom Penh is an amazing foodie city), and hostels cost under $10 USD per night. You can travel across much of the country via bus for $20 USD too.

Plus, Angkor Wat is one of the most amazing historical sites in the world. It’s $37 USD to enter, but it’s a Wonder of the World and should not be skipped (a three-day pas is $62 USD, and I do suggest spending more than one day here).

Be sure to  also visit the Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh for a sobering look at the country’s violent past. It’s heavy but necessary.

I don’t know why most people don’t talk about it, but if you want a cheap East Asian country with stunning countryside, South Korea is it. The country offers a lot of value!

When I went to South Korea a few years ago, I was stunned by how cheap everything was. Sure, it’s not as inexpensive as Southeast Asia , but compared to Japan or Europe, it’s quite affordable. With the South Korean won  at 1,309 KRW per USD and most everything costing only a few thousand won , I can’t imagine busting your budget here (unless you’re a huge foodie, because the cuisine here is delicious).

You can pick up bottles of beer at 7-11 for a couple of dollars. Hostels in Seoul start around $16 USD per night (hotel rooms start at $25 USD per night). Backpackers can get by for only $60-75 USD here.

Be sure to indulge in Seoul’s culinary scene while you’re here, and visit the Gyeongbukgung Palace (it’s the most stunning royal palace in Seoul). For a more luxurious getaway, head to Jeju Island for beaches and some fun in the sun. And if you want to learn about the country’s temultuous relationship with North Korea, take a guided tour of the DMZ .

I confess, I was late to the party on Mexico . While I had visited some of the touristy areas, it wasn’t until recently that I finally explored beyond the resorts. And I loved every minute.

Mexico City is a world-class metropolis with amazing food and nightlife, Oaxaca has incredible historic sites and an abundance of delicious eateries (and all the mezcal you can drink), and the Yucatán Peninsula is perfect for road trips and swimming in secluded cenotes (sinkholes).

While the country gets a bad rap in the US (thanks to overzealous media coverage), it’s actually much safer (and cheaper) than people think. Travelers can get by on as little as $50 USD per day ($100-120 USD if you want hotels and not hostels), and flights from the US are often just $200 USD round-trip.

In short, it’s a great option for US travelers who are short on time but still want to explore somewhere fun, sunny, and cheap.

In years past, the British pound (GBP) has been worth up to double the US dollar. That’s not the case anymore. Still struggling post-Brexit, it’s now worth just 20-30% more than the dollar. So, while the UK isn’t exactly a cheap place to visit, the weakened pound and strong dollar mean that now you’ll get a lot more value compared to years past. Backpackers can get around for as little as $75 USD per day by sticking to hostels, free museums, and cheap pub food. There’s tons of free things to do in London so you don’t have to break the bank here.

If you do want to splash out, skip-the-line tickets of the Tower of London are a must.

A strong US dollar makes traveling the world much cheaper than it would be otherwise — especially if you want to head to Europe and visit some “traditionally expensive” destinations. And while a strong dollar doesn’t mean “free,” it can definitely help you travel longer or in more luxury.

There are plenty of smart ways to save money on your travel plans, but refusing to buy travel insurance isn't necessarily one of them. How We Chose the Cheapest Travel Insurance Companies

To determine the cheapest travel insurance companies, U.S. News created sample traveler profiles for three separate eight-day trips to different destinations (the Cayman Islands, Spain and California) at a range of price points ($6,500, $10,500 and $8,500, respectively). We used that information to get quotes for the cheapest option for 100% trip cancellation coverage for each trip. We then calculated the average cost of the trips.

7 International and Domestic Destinations With Cheap Flights This Summer

When it comes to summer travel, shelling out for expensive airfare can feel like a foregone conclusion. But this year, it’s possible to find cheap last-minute flights during June, July, and August to even some of the most popular destinations.

Data shows that airfares this summer are notably cheaper compared to summer 2023. Domestic airfares for June, July, and August are $305 per ticket on average—that’s a 6% drop from last summer, according to Hopper’s report . In fact, Hopper says that this summer is the first time that airfares have gotten more affordable year-over-year since 2020. “Prices this summer are expected to peak around $315 per ticket at the end of May and early June,” says the Hopper report.

Some of the biggest savings can be found on southbound routes. Data from travel search site Kayak shows that flights to Central America, the Caribbean, and Mexico are 14%, 15%, and 16% cheaper this summer, respectively, compared to last year.

If you do plan on flying internationally, plan to travel in August if possible. During that month, Kayak’s data shows that international airfare drops by 3% compared to last year. Specifically, August 12 to 25 is the cheapest time to fly internationally, according to Kayak’s data.

With that advice in mind, here are seven destinations you can still score affordable airfare to for a summer trip. The fares represent the average price of summer flights departing roundtrip from the US; the actual ticket cost will vary depending on the airport or city you depart from. The average airfare from the mainland US to Hawai'i is 18% cheaper compared to last summer, per Kayak.

Kailua-Kona, Hawai’i

This summer, travelers looking to visit Big Island of Hawai’i and revel in its mix of tropical lushness, serene beaches, and volcanic wonders are in luck. The average airfare from the US mainland comes in at $663—that’s 18% cheaper than last summer, according to Kayak’s report. Thanks to the less-expensive tickets, you might be able to tack on a couple of inter-island flights to explore more of the gorgeous archipelago. Hops to neighbor islands like Kauai or Maui usually start at about $80 one-way.

Mexico City, Mexico

The electric dining scene and cultural attractions of Mexico City are within reach for budget-conscious travelers this summer. Airfares for the season are averaging at $479 round-trip, Kayak says. Summer is a cheaper time to visit some parts of Mexico because the country’s rainy season kicks up in May and lasts through September. Although rain is frequent during this stretch, it’s usually not enough to ruin a trip. Any precipitation typically comes as showers that pass relatively quickly, followed by lots of sunshine.

A summer trip to South Florida can be an affordable way to visit places like Palm Beach without the crowds—just be prepared for the 90 degree heat.

West Palm Beach, Florida

If it’s a domestic beach getaway you’re after, consider a visit to West Palm Beach. Flights to this charming Southern Florida enclave are averaging $346, per Kayak’s report. Once you step off the plane, you’ll have access to everything from white sand beaches to top-notch seafood restaurants and eclectic vintage stores in the city’s famous Clematis Street historic district. Beyond West Palm Beach, additional Florida destinations like Orlando ($328 average airfare) and Miami ($375) are also fun—and financially realistic—summer trip ideas for discount-minded tourists.

Belize City, Belize

One of the most popular destinations in Central America is Belize, which offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world, thanks to the Belize Barrier Reef . This summer, travelers don’t have to blow their budget to visit the Caribbean nation, which also counts Mayan ruins and tropical jungles among its many tourism draws. Airline tickets to Belize City for the season have dipped to an average of $604 round-trip, Kayak’s data says. That’s 24% less expensive than the average ticket price in summer 2023. From Belize City, you can take an inexpensive puddle-jumper plane to the sleepy coastal village of Placencia, known for its laidback resorts, or to one of the many small islands, like Ambergris Caye, that sit just off the mainland’s coast.

Nassau, Bahamas

Those seeking warm weather and sunshine would be hard pressed to find a better vacation spot than Nassau. Especially this summer, when the average price for flights is hovering right at $504 round-trip. Daily highs routinely hit 90 degrees or above during the summer months, which are also part of the area’s rainy season. But like most islands in the region, Nassau’s summer rain storms are typically heavy but short-lived, meaning there’s minimal interruption to your pool time or beach lounging. This can, however, become a more serious issue in late summer—especially August and September—when the brunt of hurricane season is in effect, so take note if you plan to travel during those months or later into fall.

Although the average summer airfare from the US to Sydney is well over a thousand dollars, we still consider it a good deal when considering how long flights are (it takes about 15 hours nonstop from California). This summer, Kayak says the average round-trip is clocking in at $1,304. That’s a whopping 22% cheaper than last summer’s average airfare and could be worth pouncing on. Because it’s in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia is actually in the midst of winter during June, July, and August. The temperature usually still reaches a balmy 65 degrees Fahrenheit in Sydney each day and can dip as low as the 40s, making it a perfect destination for travelers looking to cool off during the hottest months in the US.

Charleston, South Carolina

With its unique blend of important historical sites, an ever-evolving culinary scene, and powdery beaches along the Atlantic, Charleston is a summer destination that offers something for every type of traveler. What it doesn’t have: expensive airfares. The average ticket price for this summer is right at $349, Kayak says. Be warned that the summer months do bring sweltering weather to South Carolina, but with countless beaches (and even some small islands to explore) there’s plenty of opportunity to find relief from—and even revel in—the soaring temperatures.
