River cruise

Visit europe’s prettiest christmas markets as you sail the rhine.

There's almost nothing more festive than a traditional Christmas market, with sparkling fairy lights, pretty wooden stall chalets sprinkled with snow, and the heavenly scent of mulled wine, roast almonds and spiced cider filling the air.

This special Christmas-time cruise will take you to several of Germany's prettiest winter markets and will have you feeling festive in no time.

You'll begin your cruise in Cologne, where you'll have time to get to know this famous cathedral city. From Cologne you'll sail along the Rhine Valley. Your first stop is Rüdesheim, the centre of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and composers such as Brahms, who composed his 3rd symphony here.

Mainz is one of the oldest cities in Germany, and you'll visit its historic Christmas market on the Domplatz, set against a backdrop of the illuminated Mainz Cathedral.

You'll visit the centre of Frankfurt, where its towering Christmas tree shows it can compete with its neighbours when it comes to seasonal spirit. Pick up gifts and treats at its picturesque market like Bethmännchen, a marzipan pastry with almonds and Glühwein.

Koblenz is your next stop. This city is considered to have one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany, and is one of the largest in the Rhineland.

You'll be sailing on the beautifully-appointed A-ROSA Aqua, where you'll have everything you need for a luxurious trip included. There's a sauna, fitness area, and whirlpool, extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets, a range of drinks.

You'll start your Christmas cruise on the Rhine today, boarding your premium all-inclusive A-ROSA ship. You'll be boarding your ship in Cologne, where you can spend some time getting to know this enchanting cathedral city with its many elegant buildings and historical attractions.

You might choose to arrive one day before your cruise so that you'll have time to see all the sights, or extend your stay at the end of the trip.

Today you will visit Rüdesheim, the centre of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and musicians, including Brahms.

From a cultural point of view, the most famous place in the Rheingau has a lot to offer, including historic aristocratic estates and fortifications. Rüdesheim is also known for its winemaking, especially of aromatic Riesling wines. You may also want to stop off in one of the town's cafes to sip some delicious speciality Rüdesheimer Kaffee, an alcoholic coffee-based drink made with brandy and plenty of sugar.

You'll also visit Mainz today, a city with 2,000 years of history, making it one of the oldest cities in Germany. Traditions are fully celebrated at Christmastime at the historic Christmas market on the Domplatz, where you'll also spot the illuminated Mainz Cathedral.

Although Frankfurt is possibly better known for its business activity, it proves that it can do Christmas as well as with its tall, sparkling Christmas tree.

Between Römerberg and the historic Paulskirche down to the banks of the Main, one of the most beautiful and oldest Christmas markets in Germany takes place every winter.

There's plenty of opportunity to sample local delicacies here, with regional products such as Bethmännchen, a marzipan pastry with almonds, or hot apple wine being particularly popular.

Today you'll sail along the Middle Rhine Valley from Frankfurt to lovely Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers. This stretch of the river is the true centre of Rhine Romanticism, with vine-clad slopes, palaces and castles scattered across hills, and villages nestled along the riverbanks. It is clear why this area was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

On arrival in Koblenz you'll get to see why this city's Christmas market is considered one of the most beautiful on the Rhine. On Jesuitenplatz you'll find what is possibly the world's largest Advent calendar, made up of the colourfully-lit windows of the baroque town hall.

Your Christmas cruise comes to an end today as your ship docks once again in Cologne. You might wish to extend your trip to see more of this beautiful city before heading home full of the Christmas spirit.

Featured River, Small Ship and Land Journeys

Inspired by the destination.

For 90+ years, the Tauck family has had a passion for sailing — aboard small ships and yachts at sea, riverboats along great inland waterways, and at home on the rivers and lakes of Connecticut and New York. When we began blending our land experience with our strong passion for cruising in our first European river cruise back in 1992, we knew that no "ordinary" river cruise experience would do for our guests. We wanted them to travel Europe's rivers in the same beyond-the-ordinary Tauck style they experienced on our land trips. With that in mind, we searched to find a company to partner with that would share our values and our commitment to "do the right thing" by our guests... and found it in another family-owned company, Scylla. Together, we crafted a river cruise experience that was ahead of its time and inspired by the destinations we explore.

The Magic of a Christmas Markets River Cruise on the Danube

Four of my most memorable river cruise experiences

by Carolyn Ray

It’s almost midnight on my first Christmas markets river cruise. Before I drift off to sleep, I slide open the glass door of my room but see only darkness. With a shock, I realize that we’ve moved into a lock, and that we’re dropping down, down, down. The lock’s concrete wall is so close I can touch it, reminding me of the precision and discipline required for river cruising on the Danube River.

On my journey with Avalon Waterways along the Danube River , our ship, the Illumination , will pass through 18 locks, many of them at night. Originating in Germany, the Danube is the second longest river in Europe , flowing southeast for 2,850 km (1,770 mi), passing through or bordering Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, and Ukraine.

Often, our 443-foot ship shares the space with another river cruise that’s just inches away. The Captain of our ship is Nikola Novosel, who has spent years on the river . As someone who grew up on boats, I have deep respect for the women and men who guide these ships.

Before I came on my first river cruise, I had images of riverboats gliding smoothly through the water swirling in my head. After all, it’s not the ocean, where rough seas, tides and hurricanes can cause disruption. But as the week progresses, I learn that every day brings a new adventure and requires an on-the-spot ability to adapt.

One day, a car drives into the canal, causing a backlog of river boats that are forced to wait several hours until it is removed. Another time, a lock is under repair and can only take one ship at a time. When unexpected changes occur, the crew has to adapt quickly and find an alternate way to continue our journey along the Danube River, knowing that we may lose our coveted docking time. Surprisingly, on my nine-day river cruise with Avalon , there are only minor changes, a testament to the crew’s experience and creativity. This is living in the moment to the fullest!

Exterior of Avalon River Cruise in Europe

My first Christmas markets river cruise

Avalon’s eastbound trip begins in Passau, Germany and winds its way along the Danube River, with stops in Germany and Austria, including Nuremberg, Regensburg, Melk and Vienna. The reverse voyage is also available, starting in Vienna. There’s an optional side trip to Salzburg, Mozart’s birthplace and filming location for the Sound of Music.

The guests are mostly couples and families, many on their first trip outside North America.   On this particular cruise, there are several solo women. Tomas, our cruise director, tells me that usually there are more, and he makes every effort to help them connect, even to the point of arranging a special table just for solo women.

The first night, we are welcomed by the crew, many of whom are from Romania, Hungary and Serbia. They’re all friendly and speak English. Elena Zamfir, the Romanian hotel manager , welcomes us as ‘family’ and Austrian Michael Ferstl, Executive Chef, explains how they purchase fresh food from local markets along the way. For example, one night there are local snails smothered in butter, another evening I sip local peach schnapps. There are snacks, desserts, coffee, tea, and water available in the lounge and the Sky Deck at all hours.

A spacious room with a floor to ceiling views  .

The Avalon Illumination is fairly new. There are 67 rooms, including 16 staterooms.   My room is on the top floor (third floor) and I love it from the moment I walk in.

I’m used to living in a small 500-square-foot apartment, so the room feels spacious. Every space-saving detail has been considered without sacrificing comfort or style. There’s a luxurious queen-sized bed, a stylish bathroom, and two tables to choose from. One is a small circular table with a small couch and chair, perfect for relaxing and watching the world slide by. There’s also a working space with a fully stocked refrigerator underneath. The bathroom is outfitted with everything that I love, including a robe, an extra-strength mirror, and a shower.

Unlike some ships, this room has no deck, which makes it more spacious. There are four bars just outside the sliding door and privacy curtains that reflect the sunlight from the outside. I can already visualize my morning coffee, watching the views in complete privacy.

Safe and sustainable travel

Avalon has embraced sustainable travel , including  lower emissions, more local food production and sustainable shore excursions . The company has also made a commitment to unveil the first, fully electric river cruise vessel by 2027.

There is fresh water available to fill up my steel water bottle, and towels and sheets are not replaced unless necessary.

Every room has its own emergency button, not to mention the many buttons in the hallways and shared spaces. Hand sanitizer is everywhere, and on most buses we are asked to wear masks. Returning from excursions, hot towels, tea and yummy treats are provided.   They seem to have thought of everything.

Four of the most memorable experiences from my Christmas Markets River Cruise

1. prague’s old town market and prague castle.

My Avalon experience begins in Prague two days before boarding the boat in Passau.  Tomas hosts an orientation session the first evening and on the following morning there is an optional tour of Prague Castle and the Old Town Christmas Market. I’ve spent a week in Prague already, so I know the market well, but Wencelas, the Avalon guide, knows a surprising array of miscellaneous information about Prague .

For example, while visiting Prague Castle, he tells us that The Rolling Stones financed its new lighting system, and that   Mick Jagger celebrated his 60th  birthday in Prague.   As with so many places in Europe, Prague Cathedral ran out of money because it took over 600 years to finish, so there are 14 statues on the façade, with some empty spots that were never filled in. It’s the third church on the site and is a functioning church, yet less than 10 people regularly visit for church services on a daily basis. Sunday services generate about 100 people.

Prague’s Christmas market is centuries old, with crafts, food and music. It’s so heartwarming to see friends and family gathering – it’s as much a social event as anything. Set under the fairy-tale spires of the stunning Church of Our Lady before Týn. Prague’s Old Town Christmas Market is where friends and family gather, enjoying hot mulled wine, trdelník  chimney cakes and sausages. There is a bird’s eye view of the whole market from the top of the Prague Astronomical Clock, and an elevator for those who don’t want to take the stairs.

2. Charming Christmas Markets in Germany

On the first morning, I wake up docked in Nuremberg and join a guided tour of Nuremberg Castle and walk down to Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt. This   Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany is a mix of food and handicrafts. In addition to the handmade angel ornaments, toys and nutcrackers, Nuremberg is famous for its gold foil ornaments modelled after the Christkind, a young local woman dressed like an angel with golden wings and a crown. I have my first taste of blueberry wine and the famous Nuremberg Lebkuchen gingerbread.

The next morning, we pass through more locks and spend the day in Regensburg, the oldest medieval city north of the Alps. It’s a short walk from the river to the town, which  has a medieval Christkindlmarkt surrounded by more than 1,000 historical buildings featuring Roman, Gothic, and Romanesque architectural styles. The best views are from the Stone Bridge, a 12th century bridge across the Danube, which is known as ‘the 8th wonder of the world’ and on this beautiful day I don’t want to leave (It was modelled after the Charles Bridge in Prague.)

Regensburg is incredibly scenic. Although there are small markets around the town, its Christkindlmarkt on Neupfarrplatz is the main and most popular Christmas Market in Regensburg. I wish I could have stayed longer to appreciate all the small markets around the city and handicrafts.   I couldn’t resist a new woolen hat, in addition to one that I bought in Prague. Hats seem to be my latest addiction, along with scarves, which I also pick up along the way.

3. Austria’s musical heritage in Salzburg

We arrive in Passau the next morning, where a full day of music awaits. As a music lover, I couldn’t wait to visit Salzburg, the home of Mozart and “The Sound of Music.” Visiting Mirabell Palace, where ‘Do-Re-Mi” was filmed, I couldn’t resist singing on the steps! Just outside Salzburg, in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, is the Silent Night Memorial, where this classic song was written and played for the fist time.

Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart, so be prepared for an overabundance of Mozart chocolates, figurines and other memorabilia. Constance Mozart is also featured with cookies and treats in small heart-shaped boxes. There are Mozart candles, pretzels, ornaments, books and even Mozart ducks.  The Mozart Residence on Makartplatz and the Mozart Birthplace on the Getreidegass e are now museums.

Silent Night was originally written and performed as “Stille Nacht!” in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, just outside Salzburg. A young Catholic priest, Joseph Mohr, composed the lyrics in 1816. On Christmas Eve 1818, Mohr brought the lyrics to schoolteacher and organist Franz Gruber and asked him to put it to music as a way to bring comfort and peace to the villagers. Travelling folk singers carried the song across Europe and the first performance of the song in the US was in 1839.

Two men, a priest and a guitar player sang the song in its original format – all six verses. Not even understanding the words, I could feel the peace and stillness in that small church.  Silent Night has become one of the most beloved Christmas carols of all time and has been translated into 300 languages. It has been declared a UNESCO cultural intangible asset.

The charming Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at the Dom and Residenzplatz is one of the world’s oldest Advent markets,  mentioned in history as early as the 15th century. Of all the markets, I thought this was the most beautiful, in a historic square surrounded by the Cathedral. Not only are there ornaments, there are pretzels in every shape and colour, so I had to sample a few!

Having seen more cathedrals than I ever imagined, I can honestly say that the Baroque Salzburg Cathedral is among the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. It was seriously damaged in 1944 during WW2, when a single bomb crashed through the central dome but rebuilt and still contains Mozart’s baptismal font.

Just a short funicular ride away up the hill is Hohensalzburg Fortress , built in 1077, which offers stunning views and hosts concerts. There are three museums at the Fortress, including t he  Fortress Museum, which shows historical exhibits, the  Marionette Museum and the  Museum of the Rainer Regiment   Open year round, the Fortress can be reached on foot or by Fortress Funicular , which is located in the Festungsgasse.   A return trip for seniors is € 3.70.

4. Vienna’s many historical sights and museums

Our last stop is Vienna, the largest city on the Danube.  The trip along the river is sunny and warm enough to explore the top deck of the ship and watch as we pass small villages, like Dürenstein, on the Danube.

When we arrive in Vienna we are greeted by a guide who takes us to see its highlights. Vienna is an ancient city, settled 2,000 years ago by the Romans.  Our guide told us that a third of Vienna was bombed during the war by the Allies, in an effort to get rid of the Germans. It was also home to Sigmund Freud and Mozart.

Years ago, I read Allison Pataki’s book, Sisi: Empress on Her Own, on Empress Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary, which provided some historical context. Vienna has over 100 museums.  On our walking tour, we passed by several of them, including the Belvedere, Albertin,  Leopoldo and Sisi museums. At the Belvedere, The Kiss by Gustav Klimt is among its most famous painting and I wish I had purchased tickets in advance for the Spanish Riding School , with the famous Lipizzaner horses.

The Imperial Crypt , located beneath the Capuchin Church, is fascinating. Here, 149 members of Austria’s former Habsburg dynasty have been laid to rest since 1633, including Maria Theresia and her husband, Emperor Franz I.  It’s worth a visit just to see the ornate baroque sarcophagi – unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

Vienna Christmas Market

Vienna has several Christmas markets around the city, but the best-known include Rathaus Christkindlmarket, Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz Christmas at Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s). St. Stephen’s is a place to people watch, sip mulled wine and shop. Built in 1200 after the first church burned down, its coloured turqouise tiles are gorgeous and the steep roof is designed to keep the snow off. I was fortunate enough to  see a Christmas concert in the church.

The largest Vienna Christmas market is the family-friendly Rathaus Christkindlmarkt at Vienna’s elegant City Hall, which offers gluhwein punch, ice skating, and a ferris wheel. Most of the markets close by 10 pm and are family affairs.

Our last evening on board the ship is wonderful, with the staff saying goodbye and a delicious dinner, everything from salmon to lobster tail. I feel like a princess on the river.  The next morning, I reluctantly leave the ship, and return to every day life. I hop on the subway and am joined by my daughter. After Vienna, we take the train to Budapest, another magical city, for more adventures in the off season.

My tips on Christmas Markets River Cruises

Admittedly, I never imagined I would enjoy a river cruise so much, but after experiencing this Christmas Markets cruise with Avalon, I would happily go on another one. You can learn more about Avalon’s river cruises here.

If you are considering this experience, my advice is to look for deals, and book early, particularly if you want a room to yourself.

Indulge in the food and beverages which are all unique to each village and connect you to their history and culture.

The shopping is so delightful, if you see something that appeals to you, don’t judge it – buy it. While I loved the glass ornaments, it just wasn’t practical for me to buy them, so I looked for wood and tinfoil ornaments I could pack without fear of breakage. There are handicrafts of all kinds, from hats to gloves, scarves, woollen sweathers, all made locally. Lastly, don’t pack too much. You’ll want room in your carry on! Read more tips for first-time cruisers here.

I took a similar trip on Viking (Amsterdam to Budapest) last winter, but at a time when the Christmas markets were just setting up and not all were open. Thanks to Carolyn for telling me what we missed! I would definitely recommend ordering tickets for the Lipizzaner performance in Vienna before your trip. They only perform on weekends, but during the week you can tour the stables, meet the stallions, and possibly see some horses practicing. This region is also interesting for the castles and vineyards along the riverbanks and the lovely wines they produce, especially whites. I enjoyed sitting on the open upper deck, swaddled in a blanket and sipping mulled wine served by the stewards as we passed by countless vineyards and castles. As a past president of SATW, I’m always happy to run across a story by a member. Well done, Carolyn.

A Guide to Europe and Beyond

Best Christmas Markets in Germany 2024: Confirmed Dates

Last Updated: 15 June 2024 No Comments

Germany remains one of the top destinations for Christmas markets, with a long legacy of festive traditions and a welcoming atmosphere. However, with so many options, deciding where to go can be challenging.

Christmas Markets in Germany

This guide features the best Christmas markets in Germany to help you plan your trip. I updated it in 2024 with visitor feedback and additional insights from my experiences.

2024 Dates – Partially Confirmed

German Christmas market dates:  27th November to 24th December 2024 (specific dates vary by market – see below).

Expected Update:  Dates will be updated here as they are finalised. Want to know when they are confirmed?  Sign up for our newsletter  to get notified as soon as they become available.

Quick Guide to the Top 5 Markets

1. dresden – dates confirmed.

Dresden’s Christmas history is well-known, with the famous Striezelmarkt continuing to attract visitors. The city has a range of markets, including the traditional Frauenkirche Christmas Market and the smaller Romantic Christmas Market.

Dresden dates:  27th November to 24th December 2024 (confirmed).

Make sure to leave time to explore Dresden’s baroque Old Town (Altstadt). Visit the Frauenkirche, a renowned church, Brühl’s Terrace along the waterfront, the Opera and the Zwinger, which houses several museums.

Dresden offers plenty of opportunities for exploration and memorable experiences. It’s my top pick!

Find more information and things to do with my recently updated Dresden Christmas Market guide.

2. Nuremberg – Dates Confirmed

In Nuremberg, you’ll find one of the world’s most popular Christmas markets. It’s known for its size and authenticity, even surpassing Dresden in terms of interest.

Nuremberg dates:  29th November to 24th December 2024 (confirmed).

Located in the historic Old Town Square, the market features timber stalls with vendors committed to selling handmade products from local artisans.

This market maintains its traditions by excluding plastic and foreign-produced goods, focusing solely on Bavarian crafts and foods, and even excluding items from other German regions.

Expect a lively, festive atmosphere and a special opening ceremony performed by Christkind, the market’s angel.

Read the full overview of Nuremberg Christmas Market .

Having friends in Munich has allowed me to explore the city’s numerous markets relatively often. What I like about Munich is that there are so many to choose from.

Munich dates:  25th November to 24th December 2024 (unconfirmed).

The main Marienplatz Christmas Market stands out as one of the best in Germany. It has a traditional atmosphere, stunning decorations and a Christmas tree at its centre.

Beyond Marienplatz, the market off Odeonsplatz has a cosy and intimate setting, while Wittelsbacherplatz has cute medieval-style market stalls.

For a more unique experience, the Tollwood Winter Festival is an interesting destination. The festival features themed tents, human circus acts and an alternative atmosphere.

Get the latest information for Munich Christmas Market .

4. Rothenburg

Known as the Reiterlesmarkt, Rothenburg’s market dates back to the 15th century. It’s named after the ‘Reiterle’, a character from local legends that has transitioned from a feared spectre to a symbol of the holidays.

Rothenburg dates:  29th November to 23rd December 2024 (unconfirmed)

As you wander through the market, you’ll find regional handcrafted items and local delicacies like the ‘Schneeballen’, a unique, snowball-shaped pastry. Full disclosure: I’ve tried Schneeballen and thought it was awful but to each their own.

My complete guide to Rothenburg Christmas Market provides everything you need to know before heading off.

5. Heidelberg

On the banks of the Neckar River, Heidelberg is one of Germany’s loveliest small cities, renowned for its panoramic views, iconic castle and charming atmosphere.

Heidelberg dates:  25th November to 22nd December 2024 (unconfirmed).

Beyond the castle, Heidelberg’s other attractions, include the picturesque Old Town, the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit, and the Old Bridge.

In winter, Heidelberg’s markets take over the Old Town. Read my Heidelberg Christmas Market to start planning.

Cologne has always been one of my favourite cities in Germany. Way back when I lived in Paris, it was quick, easy and affordable to hop on the train and head there for the weekend.

Cologne dates:  23rd November to 23rd December 2024 (unconfirmed).

Cologne is home to some of the most unique Christmas markets, including the waterfront markets that take place on the Rhine River. There is also the Christmas Garden at the Zoo, music events and thematic weekend-only markets.

I always recommend visitors walk over the famous Hohenzollern Bridge so you can look back towards Cologne Cathedral as the sun sets.

Cologne Christmas Market is located in front of Cologne Cathdral and Cologne Town Hall. Read my guide for details on these and each of the other markets in the old town.

Berlin is always buzzing with energy and excitement, especially over Christmas and New Year. The city’s streets are decorated, and the atmosphere is fun and festive.

Berlin dates:  25th November to 31st December 2024 (unconfirmed).

While the shops and bars can get crowded during the holiday season, there’s always something new and exciting to discover. Attend some art exhibitions, theatre performances, live music shows and winter festivals.

Of course, one of the main draws is the city’s many Christmas markets. From the traditional market near Berlin Cathedral to the hugely popular one at Alexanderplatz, there’s no shortage of options to choose from.

Gendarmenmarkt is a personal favourite, with its beautiful architecture and classy atmosphere. Hopefully, it will return to this location next year.

Another popular option is the event at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Kurfürstendamm, which is known for its live entertainment.

In this list, I share my thoughts on the best Berlin Christmas Market locations. Berlin’s always an incredible winter destination. Leave a comment below letting me know if you’ve been and which places you liked best.

Frankfurt hosts one of Germany’s most iconic holiday markets, attracting many international visitors.

Frankfurt dates:  26th November to 21st December 2024 (unconfirmed).

The event stretches through the city centre, starting at Mainkai on the waterfront and continuing through Römerberg, Paulsplatz, and Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz, before ending at Hauptwache.

This extensive route offers visitors a cosy, accessible experience, with plenty of opportunities to explore and discover new things.

The market is renowned for its stunning decorations, towering Christmas tree and beautifully adorned chalets.

  • Stuttgart Christmas Market – Landmarks like the Old Castle, Collegiate Church and New Castle become the grand stage for the Stuttgarter Weihnachtsmarkt and its 300 years of tradition.
  • Trier Christmas Market – Browse the 100 beautifully decorated wooden huts at Hauptmarkt, next to the Church of Our Lady and St Peter’s Cathedral.
  • Tubingen Christmas Market – This picturesque university town is stunning at all times of the year. Enjoy Swabian specialties this winter.

Sustainability

  • Shop mindfully: Make a plan and try only to purchase items you need.
  • Walk, cycle and use public transport: Germany’s big cities have excellent public transport networks, including buses, trains and trams. You can also explore on foot or by bike when the weather is good.
  • Stay in a sustainable hotel: Look for hotels powered by renewable energy or have eco-friendly practices in place. This list of eco-friendly hotels in Berlin is a great place to start planning.
  • Avoid plastic: Avoid items packaged in plastic, and bring your own reusable bags and containers when shopping. Several events in Germany are now going plastic-free or zero waste.
  • Eat locally sourced organic food: Order locally sourced, organic food options when possible.
  • Limit your consumption of meat and dairy: Consider vegetarian or vegan options during your travels. Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich have many locations serving plant-based specialties.
  • Be open to diverse cultures and experiences: Germany is a diverse country with many different cultures and regional traditions. Be open to exploring outside of the main tourist areas and learning about the local customs and history.
  • Support the arts: Attend local events, such as concerts, theatre performances or art exhibitions.

Recommendations are independently chosen based on personal travel experiences and extensive research. Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

christmas market cruise germany

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

christmas market cruise germany

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

christmas market cruise germany

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

christmas market cruise germany

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
