2003 Voyager Battery Drain

  • Add to quote

Van would not start originally, battery was OEM original, replaced it. Ran for 2 days and parked it. When I attempted to start the next day, battery was dead again. No lights are being left on left on, and after jumping, I'm getting 14.3 volts at battery, and 14.3 at positive lug on alternator. Have not checked amperage output at alternator yet. Any ideas to check for parasitic battery drain? Thanks........

The body control module may not be shutting down when you key off.Or else the diodes in the alternator are popped.Jump started anyone lately?

I jumped the new battery that's in it to get it started. Is the body control module part of the ECM box?

I was wondering if you had jump started someone before all this happened.Jump starting has been known to ruin alternator diodes. These items hold the current from flowing out when its shut down. The module (Body control/Forward control) is what everything goes thru to operate (wipers, headlight, cruise, power windows/door locks). Its under the hood in a steel colored box.I would try first unhooking the alternator to see if its draining.Sometimes a radio can do it too if the amp hangs up (had it happen to me before on an aftermarket unit).

I think the alternators are pretty durable. The diodes shouldn't have issues jump starting a vehicle. I once jumped a viper that had been sitting over a year, that thing nearly killed my engine which i had running at 4k rpm's, but the alternator was just fine. I would pull certain fuses when the van is parked and reinsert them before starting and see if any one fuse being pulled keeps the battery from dieing. Once you know where the draw is, the fixing is the easy part.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

To check drain, remove your battery ground connector, use your multimeter between the connector and the battery post you just removed it from. The meter will show you if it's over 100ma. I recently returned the Wal-Mart Battery I got for my GEN1 3 months ago. It has a 3 year full return warranty. Seems it had a cell or 2 shorted out, would not hold a charge, would be dead within a couple of days if not used. Later on, it wouldn't hold overnight. They were very nice, no questions asked. the new battery is solid and reliable. Check the rear gate latch "post", if the plastic around it isn't there any more, your gate may not be fully closing and the rear light may be staying on. This ate my earlier battery (4 years old). That gate post/pin is only about $11 at the dealer.

You may have a phantom ground in your cluster. There are several recent posts about "over heated" connectors on the cluster, causing strange behaviors. One commented about the turn signals and hazard lights. If you can, remove the cluster and closely check the pins on the connectors to the back of the cluster. Keep us informed

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Before you take a reading on the ammeter, let the van sit for 10-15 minutes to let everything time out. Scroll to "Checking out battery drain" towards bottom: http://free-auto-repair-advice.blogspot.com/search/label/battery drain

On my '97 T&C I once had a latched relay for the backlight heater that continued to draw current when everything was off. The relay was actually melted near its terminal. Perhaps that circuit is the same design on your van. To find the fault you need to measure the parasitic loss and pull one fuse or relay at a time to see where it stops. If your ammeter is out of range, put a resistor in series with the battery lead and measure the voltage drop. For example, a 2 ohm 10W resistor would drop 1 volt for a 500 ma draw.

Left the fuse out for Hazards and guages, no more drain, van starts right up after sitting overnight in 20 degree weather. Now I have to figure out what all runs off that fuse, unplug them and/or check connections, and see when drain stops with fuse back IN.

Time to pull out that Haynes manual you picked up at the local parts store for your year/make/model/engine, and trace some wiring. :thumb:

Fuse is a 20A mini, located in the IPM box under the hood. Last night I put the fuse back in, unplugged hazard connector and had same amp draw that drained it. Took instrument cluster out, unplugged connector to it, and had no more drain. Pins on cluster and wiring harness end look fine. Calling the dealer today to schedule an appointment. Van is still under warranty through April, and cluster is covered under my coverage :thumb:

What to consider when selecting a battery for your Chrysler Grand Voyager

When beginning the process of selecting the battery for your Grand Voyager, you'll want to consider several things. While there are clearly many options out there, you'll want to pick the one that is the best for your needs, as well as your family's budget.

If you're very price conscientious, or if you're just strapped for cash, there's nothing wrong with getting the least expensive battery that you can find. So long as the battery you're considering is suited for your vehicle, it will serve its purpose just fine.

Of course, going the cheapest route possible often means not having as good of a warranty. And it could mean that you are getting a lesser quality battery.

But as budgets can be tight at times, it's ok. The main thing is to get your family's car safely back on the road. You can always replace it with a better model battery when you can afford to.

If you don't mind spending a little more, some brands come with better warranties than others. Explore all of the warranty options of each brand in your price range.

Keep in mind that a battery should last three to five years. But if you are parking places with extreme heat or cold, then a solid warranty should be something worth your consideration.

Consumer reviews

Carefully reading and scrutinizing consumer reviews for car batteries might be worth your time. Does the battery you're looking at have a solid number of reviews? Are the reviews mostly favorable?

No matter what product you're considering, there will always be someone that wasn't satisfied with it. So take a negative review or two with a grain of salt. But if the reviews are noticeably negative, maybe think about moving on to the next brand.

How long does a Chrysler Grand Voyager battery last?

Expect any 12V automotive battery to last three to five years for the average consumer. These can last longer than conventional batteries due to their constant recharging via the vehicle's alternator.

As with any vehicle component, how long the battery will last greatly depends on how you operate your vehicle.

Temperature

Aside from time, the temperature is a factor in your battery's lifespan. If a temperature is too cold, the battery can only use a smaller percentage of its charge to start your engine. For example, at freezing, a car battery can only muster 65% of its full charge.

On the other end of the spectrum, extreme heat will also impact your battery. When it gets too hot, the fluids in the battery begin to evaporate.

This will decrease the useful life of your battery. A car that overheats on the road will also lead to battery corrosion. Corrosion is the number one reason for battery-related issues.

Driving style

If you do a lot of short trips, you are putting a little extra strain on your battery. And if you often need jump starts due to leaving your headlights on, you're also diminishing your battery's life.

A faulty alternator will cause your battery to discharge until it's dead. This can lead to your battery being unable to be recharged. Be sure to check your alternator routinely during maintenance visits with your local mechanic.

They will be able to identify any issues with your charging system and rectify them before they begin to damage your battery.

What are the signs your car needs a new battery?

Thankfully, your battery will likely show some warning signs before it totally conks out. These signs include:

  • If you need to get your vehicle jump started frequently, it's a sign that your battery is weakening. An occasional jump start isn't a sure-fire reason to replace your battery, but if you are getting it done more than once a week, then it's time to replace it.
  • Should the car not start, but your dash display comes on, this is a sign of a very weak battery. It will most likely start after being jumped, but weak batteries won't hold a charge as long. If this happens, have your battery inspected by a trusted mechanic to see if it's ready to be replaced.
  • Is it slow to start? If you hear your engine straining to turn over, then you might have a dying battery. Getting the engine to start will kick the alternator in so that the battery will charge. But if the battery is too old and weak, it won't fully charge.

How much should I pay for a car battery?

The price you can expect to pay for a car battery will depend on the brand you select, as well as the market where you're located. On average, it's reasonable to expect to pay an average of $100 to $200 for a new battery.

You'll be assessed a core disposal fee in addition to the price of the battery if you are turning in your old one. This fee varies from place to place.

The core disposal fee is so that the retailer can ensure that the old battery is disposed of safely. As there are corrosive materials in the battery and other agents that are harmful to the environment, batteries should be discarded with care.

Auto mechanic replacing car battery

How to replace Chrysler Grand Voyager battery

  • Pop the hood by pulling on the hood release, located on the interior driver's side of your Grand Voyager.
  • Locate the battery. It will be on the right side of the engine bay. Newer models will have a battery casing that needs to be removed before you can access the battery. You can do this with a screwdriver.
  • Once you've got access to the battery, you'll need to locate the battery safety clip holding the battery securely in place. Using a 13mm socket, you will be able to remove it. If it's corroded, you might need to spray it with some WD40 to help loosen it up.
  • Next, locate the positive and negative battery terminals. They need to be removed so that you can safely pull out the battery. Using a 10mm wrench, remove the negative first. Then remove the positive.
  • Remove the battery.
  • Set the new battery in its place. Attach the positive terminal, then the negative.
  • Fasten the safety clip back into place.
  • Start your van. Allow it to run for several minutes.
  • Securely close the hood of your Voyager.

Chrysler Voyager battery light is on – causes and how to reset

When the red battery light comes on in the dashboard of Chrysler Voyager, it indicates a malfunction in the charging system. This can happen due to a number of reasons which we will discuss in this article.

Chrysler Voyager

The most common reason for battery light illuminating in Chrysler Voyager is faulty alternator. But the battery light can also come on due to a damaged wire, corrosion on electrical connectors, corrosion on battery terminals, bad ground connection and slipping serpentine belt.

1. Faulty Alternator

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Alternators can fail at any time, but generally they last over 100,000 miles. Before replacing the alternator, you must rule out other causes that may stop or degrade flow of current from the alternator, for example: bad electrical connection or damaged wire.

How to test the alternator

The easiest method to check the alternator is by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running.

  • Start your Voyager.
  • Connect the black cable of the multimeter to negative terminal of the battery, and the red cable to the positive terminal.
  • The voltage should be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Switch on the accessories in your Voyager, for example, headlights, AC fan at full speed, and interior lights.
  • The voltage should remain around 14 volts. If it drops and remain below 13.5 volts, it indicates a problem with the current supply from the alternator.
  • If the voltage drops below 12 volts with the engine running and the accessories turned on, it means the current supply from the alternator is completely cut off and all the electronics are solely powered by the battery.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Can you drive Voyager with a bad alternator?

Yes, you can drive your Voyager with a bad alternator, but only for a short distance. The battery charge will go down as you drive since all the on-board electronic controllers and accessories are now solely powered by the battery. When the battery charge gets too low the engine will shut down, and you will be stranded.

2. Poor ground connection

What is a ground connection.

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body/chassis of Voyager, called a ground connection. The engine also requires a ground connection to function, but the way the engine is mounted, it does not allow the electric current to flow between the engine and the body (due to non-conductive rubber insulated engine mounts). For this purpose, a ground strap/wire is used to connect the engine and the chassis.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

What happens when the ground connection goes bad?

If the ground connection of the chassis or the engine goes bad in your Voyager due to rust or corrosion, you will face all sorts of electrical issues, including battery light illuminating in the dashboard. The alternator relies on the ground connection of the engine to function properly. When the ground is bad, the current supply from the alternator will be reduced or may fluctuate. Additionally, in rare cases the contact between the engine block and the alternator can also go bad due to corrosion.

How to check if the ground connection is good?

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Voyager by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal part of the engine. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and exposed metal part of the alternator.

Inspect and clean the ground connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Voyager. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables (battery to body, body to engine) for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper or wire brush. You may also have to remove the alternator and clean the ground contact area on the alternator and on the engine block.

3. Poor battery connection

It is possible the alternator in your Chrysler Voyager is working properly, but the current flow is interrupted due to a loose electrical connection, a damaged wire, or corrosion on the battery terminals.

Corrosion on battery terminals

Battery corrosion is a fairy common problem (except in AGM batteries), especially if the installed battery is more than 2 years old. Corrosion occurs when the battery acid reacts with the metal terminals which can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow. If there isn’t enough current flow, the battery will not be charged properly, and may cause engine starting problems.

Check battery terminals

To know if your Voyager charging system problems are from dirty battery terminals, you need to investigate them. Lift the plastic covers over the terminals and check for any signs of corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you may not have to replace the battery or the alternator, just clean the battery terminals.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Clean the battery terminals

Quick cleaning: There is a neat little trick with which you can clean corrosion on the battery terminals of your Voyager in under a minute. Pour hot boiling water over the corroded terminals and the corrosion will just melt away. Do one terminal at a time and don’t let water puddle on the top of the battery touch both terminals at the same time, this can short the battery.

Thorough cleaning: To thoroughly clean the battery in your Chrysler Voyager, you have to remove the terminal cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative terminal using a wrench or a plier. Next you can unplug the red positive terminal cable. Be careful not to touch both terminals with your metal tool, it will be one expensive mistake. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery with sandpaper or wire brush. After cleaning, reconnect the cables in reverse order, positive first, then negative.

4. Slipping serpentine belt

The serpentine belt, also known as accessory belt or drive belt, transfers the power from the engine to other components like the alternator and the AC compressor, that are essential for normal operation of your Chrysler Voyager.

If the serpentine belt is damaged or becomes loose, or if the alternator pulley develops a defect, it can cause the belt to slip. This can cause the alternator to spin slower or inconsistently and the electricity production is degraded. When the on-board diagnostic system detects low voltage from the alternator, the battery symbol light comes on in the instrument cluster of Voyager.

Symptoms of bad serpentine belt

The most common sign of bad serpentine belt in Voyager is squealing noise from the engine compartment. Another prominent sign is visible cracks on the ribbed part of the belt. A slipping accessory belt can also cause burning smell.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Sound of a slipping serpentine belt

If the serpentine belt is found to be defective, it must be replaced. Keep in mind that a slipping belt is not always defective, it can slip due to a number of reasons, including due to a bad tensioner pulley or any other pulley.

5. Rodent damage

If rodents like rats, mice, or squirrels have chewed up the cables for the alternator, it can cause the battery light to turn on in Voyager. Look for any signs of bite marks in the engine compartment, and examine all the cables for the alternator. If any cable has been damaged, replace it with a new one.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

How to reset the battery light

Fix the issue.

Resetting the battery light in Voyager without solving the underlying issue may not help, as the warning light will turn back on when the system again detects the fault. The light should disappear automatically after fixing the issue. If it doesn’t turn off immediately, driving your vehicle for a few miles should help.

OBDII scanner method

The proper way to reset the battery light in Voyager is by clearing the codes with an OBDII scanner. If the warning light doesn’t turn off automatically after fixing the issue, you will have to do it manually by connecting a diagnostic device and then deleting all the error codes related to the charging system.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

Disconnect the battery

If you don’t have a diagnostic device, it may be possible to reset the battery light in Voyager by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

Since Chrysler Voyager is equipped with on-board diagnostics (OBD), a fault diagnosis can provide initial indications of where the malfunction is located.

chrysler grand voyager battery drain

To begin troubleshooting, you must first connect the diagnostic tool to your Voyager. The OBDII connector is usually located under the dashboard. With the tool connected, turn on the ignition. Most diagnostic devices then ask for some information about the vehicle. It is important that you enter this 100% correctly, otherwise the result of the search may be inaccurate. In addition to the vehicle make, model, and engine type, you usually also have to type in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Since some OBD codes are manufacturer-specific, the scanner will be able to give you more accurate information if you enter more details about your Voyager.

When the battery light comes on in your Chrysler Voyager, you should always start with testing the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. If the voltage test fails, then move on to testing the alternator and its electrical connections.

In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop. A professional mechanic can swiftly diagnose the charging system issue for you.

Battery Drain?

Asked by brit644 , October 14, 2019

  • Ask a question

New [500 mile] Lucas battery, new alternator and belts all round.

If I dont drive every day..or miss a day theres not enough to start the car [2.8 cd] although turns over quite well.

To be honest only do maybe 100 miles per week. Local garage tells me not driving enough. Course I had to be clever bugger and pulled out the owners manual and asked show me where it says you have to drive every day.

I have all interior lights etc on permanent off. Nothing plugged in either, Did notice maybe 5 weeks ago left the doors open for 90 mins while carpet cleaning [interior lights off] resulting in low battery level.

Had battery checked and all good, alternator is just about 14a

I have a bat pack, connect and starts first crank. The vehicle runs extremely well, have to say love the many pluses and ride of the car..

Do you have a digital multimeter to check the voltage of the battery just before you try to start it?

This will confirm the above suggestions if it's less than 12.7 to 12.8 volts which is a fully charged unit (I think - please correct me if I'm out on that number)

If I'm right less than 12.3 is a fairly low battery. And the 2.8 diesel doesn't appear to like that, especially when it gets cooler.

I made a mistake, I bought an expensive 6 series battery it was $hite, someone gave me a 5 year old F11 [stamped into terminals] to this day it's the best battery in my long round world, turns out the F11 is really a VARTA but this comes close, the Exide EK800 12V 80Ah 800A AGM VRLA Car Battery MERCEDES-BENZ A0009822108.

Like most big beast's the terminals are wrong way round but I have a "big red key" fitted on the end of 3' of copper welders cable so I'm ok.

NOTE: since eu2006/66 Europe no longer sell 100% virgin lead starter batteries, they all must have a % of scrapyard lead by (damn the greens) law.

- NEVER use those "put your registration in here"

- reproduced from May 2017 post in this forum

- and if a battery is a store of energy / starting punch - why are in the UK do they suggest Voyagers use the  Optima 4.2  at about £160 ? - instead of a similar or better spec  TAXI battery  at half that price

- NEW: better still the  the Exide EK800 12V 80Ah 800A AGM VRLA Car Battery MERCEDES-BENZ A0009822108. The Optima SPIRAL  claim is that  : - It'll last up to 2 times longer than other batteries. - It can sit unused 3 times longer than other batteries. - It is over 15 times more resistant to vibration than other batteries. - It's non-spill-able and can mount in almost any position. - It provides more power in the initial 1, 3, 5, and 10 seconds of the vehicle starting process than comparably rated conventional lead acid batteries. I've read the  threads on here about the issue  with the Voyager in the UK and / or / lifestyle. Others have chosen and had success with different batteries / choices. Sorry about 'wall' of text So here's  the lazy way  : Circumstances / mobility / lacking ability. Fit a  red top , goes straight in without moddin, not cheap but about 30% cheaper when they were 1st released.

Best of luck folks.. ... .... ......

Thanks for all the notes.

Have been shy of getting into it..rain. Bit of a wuz playing with electrics while being showered from above.

Have been using a battery pack last few days. The down time has given space to gather tools etc. Multi meter [20amp] has just arrived.

From monday weather is better so will get at it. Decided to do full leak test, I know the IOD will have the known continuous use items on there but thought to test for other leaks then pull each fuse to find source.

Appears to be correct, battery at 90%....especially at 40deg or below where it shrugs the shoulders and says nah not going to start.

I did try and purchase a 800 crank amp bat but as someone pointed out terminals. I chickened and bought the 650.

Its weird. I have a vehicle in the USA with a 7.4l engine [454 c.in]  with 750 crank amp. At 22 deg  c below it fires first crank..after a month of non use.  Have to admit tho I change to winter oil, from 50 weight summer to 5/30 winter..Course its 15 quid a a gal.

Most UK AGM type batteries [.1.flat.2.spiral versions] that are called amp/hours will/can provide continuously until discharged. This is very different tor CCA (cold cranking amps) or CA (cranking amps) This is where the BA-9 handheld battery tester comes into play:

I've got an old  Solar BA-9 that still reads accurate - I tell it   SLA/AGM/et.al - I tell it chemistry AGM/ flat/spiral - I tell it CA or CCA (CCA - I push 1 button!

Unfortunately these things cost.

There's a whole paragraph in the workshop manuals covering this general subject and warning you about leaving for more than a month and in the particular a special fuse with a ledge built in just for pulling this fuse before parking at airports. I'm UK 2.8 CRD no idea what you are my friend, but what I describe as lifestyle is everything in the winter. Use it or lose it my mate.

Thanks for all notes/replies

Had it at my local mechs for a full day...Was the damn battery..new one at that with only 500 ml on it

Changed the battery..perfect since

Chrysler Voyager - chrysler voyager battery drain solved. Its all to do with the ignition key. You can remove the key and the van will still run. To remove the key correctly push in the button next to the barrel and turn the key towards you as far as it will go. Then turn away from you once. The key should line up with a small mark on the barrel.

  6. Huge Battery Drain.

My petrol 3.3 Grand Voyager (had since new, 2003) has for years shown signs of quirky electrical behaviour (headlight flickering, strange door/alarm/lights performance) but recently it peaked with a massive battery drain. NOW it just won't start at all even when battery disconnected then charged (to 11v). It will however jump start fine.

  7. 2008 Grand Voyager intermittent electrical drain.

The drain is up to 3.5 amps with everything off, but only when the car has got really wet. Obviously this flattens the battery overnight. Once it has dried out, the drain is only 0.25 amps, which is OK. So, I've got a short ( when wet ) somewhere in the electrical system. Whoopee.

  10. Parasitic Drain

The C/20 rate is 50 therefore over 20 hours pulling 2.5 amp will drain the battery; over 100 hours 0.5 amps drains it; over 500 hours 0.1 (100 milliamps); I would therefore assume the drain will result in the battery being 1/4 discharged..
