GMC Vehicles w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (All 8 Models)

Adaptive cruise control has been available mostly in luxury vehicles but is now common in many mainstream cars, including GMC.

The GMC SUVs, trucks, and EVs in this post have adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

gmc

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The more-basic cruise control in older GMC vehicles helps maintain a steady cruising speed for a relaxing highway drive.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the vehicle’s speed to match the car ahead, slowing or accelerating accordingly in response to the driver’s set speed.

Newer GMC models have Pro Safety or Pro Safety Plus, a suite of safety features that includes ACC.

Automakers that produce trucks and SUVs with adaptive cruise control include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .

Meanwhile, these manufacturers specialize in making capable off-roaders:

  • Ram trucks with cruise control .
  • Jeep SUVs and trucks with cruise control .
  • Ford SUVs and trucks with cruise control .
  • Chevy SUVs and trucks with cruise control .

GMC SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 gmc terrain.

In a small SUV class dominated by all-stars like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, the GMC Terrain can seem mediocre in many aspects.

Still, prospective buyers will be happy to know that all GMC Terrain models have had cruise control since its 2010 debut.

No GMC Terrain has the more-advanced adaptive cruise control, unfortunately.

#2 GMC Acadia

If you need an extra row of seats than the Terrain has, the midsize three-row Acadia will meet your requirement.

Like its smaller sibling, all GMC Acadia models have had cruise control as a standard provision since 2007.

No GMC Acadia models have sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

#3 GMC Yukon

This large SUV is one of the leading models in its class.

All three-row GMC Yukon models from 2001 to 2022 had standard cruise control.

The Denali Ultimate trim of the 2023 GMC Yukon has adaptive cruise control, while other less expensive ones have conventional cruise control.

GMC Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#4 gmc canyon.

For those that don’t need a full-size truck, the midsize GMC Canyon with relatively high towing capacity is a solid pick.

Most GMC Canyon trucks have cruise control, except for the lower trims; unfortunately, no GMC Canyon has adaptive cruise control.

#5 GMC Sierra 1500

With serious competition from full-size Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 – both with available cruise control – the GMC Sierra 1500 has its work cut out to stay class-competitive.

Still, the GMC Sierra 1500 has had adaptive cruise control in the AT4X trim since 2022, while the rest (including Denali) have conventional cruise control.

All Sierra 1500s from 2004 to 2021 had standard cruise control, Denali and AT4 included.

Sierra 1500 models from 2001 to 2003 only had the cruise control system in the upper trims.

#6 GMC Sierra 2500HD

Cruise control has been available only in the higher trims of GMC Sierra 2500HD since 2001, and the system is optional for the lower trims.

No Sierra 2500HD has the higher-spec adaptive cruise control, unfortunately.

#7 GMC Sierra 3500HD

Like the 2500HD, the GMC Sierra 3500HD has optional cruise control, with no variants or trims with the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

GMC Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#8 gmc hummer ev.

Besides the six-figure price tag potentially a deterrent, serious off-roaders will find many reasons to love the Hummer EV.

It has a potent, 1,000-horsepower electric powertrain with exceptional off-road prowess.

Adaptive cruise control is standard in all GMC Hummer EVs.

Cruise Control

With cruise control, the vehicle can maintain a speed of about 40 km/h (25 mph) or more without keeping your foot on the accelerator. Cruise control does not work at speeds below 40 km/h (25 mph).

If the brakes are applied, the cruise control is disengaged.

If the vehicle has the StabiliTrak® system and begins to limit wheel spin while using cruise control, the cruise control automatically disengages. See StabiliTrak® System on page 9‑36 or Traction Control System (TCS) on page 9‑35. When road conditions allow you to safely use it again, the cruise control can be turned back on.

Cruise control can be dangerous where you cannot drive safely at a steady speed. So, do not use the cruise control on winding roads or in heavy traffic. Cruise control can be dangerous on slippery roads. On such roads, fast changes in tire traction can cause excessive wheel slip, and you could lose control. Do not use cruise control on slippery roads.

RES/+ (Resume/Accel): Move the thumbwheel up toward RES/+ to make the vehicle resume to a previously set speed or to accelerate.

SET/− (Set/Coast): Move the thumbwheel down toward SET/- to set a speed and activate cruise control, or to make the vehicle decelerate.

Setting Cruise Control

If the cruise button is on when not in use, it could get bumped and go into cruise when not desired. Keep the cruise button turned off when cruise control is not being used.

Resuming a Set Speed

If the cruise control is set at a desired speed and then the brakes are applied, the cruise control is disengaged without erasing the set speed from memory.

Once the vehicle reaches about 40 km/h (25 mph) or more, move the thumbwheel up toward RES/+ briefly. The vehicle returns to the previous set speed and stays there.

Increasing Speed While Using Cruise Control

If the cruise control system is already activated

○ Move the thumbwheel up toward RES/+ and hold it until the vehicle accelerates to the desired speed, and then release it.

○ To increase the speed in small amounts, move the thumbwheel up toward RES/+ briefly and then release it. Each time this is done, the vehicle goes about 1.6 km/h (1 mph) faster.

Reducing Speed While Using Cruise Control

If the cruise control system is already activated,

○ Move the thumbwheel toward SET/− and hold until the desired lower speed is reached, then release it.

○ To slow down in small amounts, move the thumbwheel toward SET/− briefly. Each time this is done, the vehicle goes about 1.6 km/h (1 mph) slower.

Passing Another Vehicle While Using Cruise Control

Use the accelerator pedal to increase the vehicle speed. When you take your foot off the pedal, the vehicle will slow down to the previous set cruise speed.

Using Cruise Control on Hills

How well the cruise control works on hills depends upon the vehicle speed, load, and the steepness of the hills. When going up steep hills, you might have to step on the accelerator pedal to maintain the vehicle speed. When going downhill, you might have to brake or shift to a lower gear to maintain the vehicle's speed. When the brakes are applied the cruise control is disengaged.

Ending Cruise Control

There are three ways to end cruise control:

○ To disengage cruise control; step lightly on the brake pedal or clutch, the indicator light will go off.

○ Press * CANCEL.

○ To turn off the cruise control, press ON/OFF 5 CRUISE. The cruise control cannot be resumed.

Erasing Speed Memory

The cruise control set speed is erased from memory if ON/OFF 5 CRUISE is pressed or if the vehicle is turned off.

GMC Terrain Adaptive Cruise Control

  • Add to quote

Anyone know if they are planning to add this? seems like a major oversight since for 30k you can get a mazda cx5 that looks really nice with the tech, or a crv for that matter.

cruise control gmc terrain

The 2018 doesn’t have it. I suppose they could introduce it on later model years but I doubt it will happen until the next major body change.

are you sure the 2018 doesn’t ? i was told by my dealer that the equinox premier has it and also the terrain denali for 2018? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

i was wrong, well my dealer was wrong telling me that. odd that they didn’t include it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

cruise control gmc terrain

Not odd at all. Often, other features are added later in model years. The 2018's are brand new so adaptive cruise many show up a year or two from now. Also, the GMC brand often has had a few extra features that Chevrolet does not get, except sometimes , on an upper level Chevrolet or with more $$$ upper trim level packages.

cruise control gmc terrain

It would be a nice add on, but since most of my driving is in the city its not a deal breaker for me.

cruise control gmc terrain

I've never driven a vehicle with adaptive cruise and have no idea if this is a option I would like.

its great for stop and go, especially on long trips It is a great feature on long highway drives, but especially on your morning commute if you get on the highway at all. Basically, you get to take your foot off the gas and let the car do the work for you. There are two main versions, limited and full stop. Limited (like in the 2016 yukon xl denali) stops around 16 mph etc, some preset speed. So below that, it won't work and will automatically disengage. Then there are full stop versions that will take the car to a complete stop in stop and go traffic. I think with those, when traffic in front of you starts moving you just tap the gas and it will resume moving. Most non gm cars are coming with it standard or as a reasonable option. Ford even has it on their F450 and will work while towing a 30k lb trailer, while GM has yet to put it on any pickup as far as I know. It is no wonder than Ford is owning that market even though I like GM trucks better. Except now, I probably would buy the ford because GM refuses to help me get my car repaired. They say it is working fine. I am even willing to pay for the repair, but if they acknowledge they have to repair it, they would likely have to recall more Terrains and so in my opinion are ignoring it as much as they can. So they just say it is working as described.

I hardly ever used cruise until I got adaptive cruise. I use it all the time and love it. It is a great feature.

Adaptive cruise might be dangerous. It can cause the drivers to be lax by not having to pay attention. "Cruise Control" should not be used in heavy traffic morning commutes where traffic varies in speed and vehicles can bunch up. Adaptive Cruise - - might be just another "nanny" to allow drivers to be less responsible.

When we were car shopping, we were considering a new style GMC Acadia, which has adaptive cruise control as an option on the Denali. We saw low mileage used Acaidias on two occasions that GM took back due to problems with adaptive cruise control. It may have been customer acceptance as much as mechanical issues but who knows? Our salesman recommend against the system as it can be scary for some drivers and also said the "adaptive" function can't be completely shut off if you don't like it.

look into the Mazda CX9 much more handsome vehicle, especially signature trim. I believe you can turn off the adaptive part of the cruise control if you want to which I thought was a nice touch. There are some scenarios in which I would prefer to have standard cruise control, instead of having the vehicle slow down. i.e. you are in the right lane and someone in front of you is going slow so you get into the left lane to pass them. With adaptive on, this is not as easy because your car will usually start to slow down before you move over which is annoying and also makes passing more difficult because you are now entering the passing lane at a slower speed. I believe the CX9 also has brake hold which is really nice at stop lights, which as far as I know no GM product has. I know smaller hondas and mercedes have it too. unrelated but important http://www.terrainforum.net/9-terra...-brake-assist-terrain-equinox.html#post142281

GMC Terrain

What's new for 2023.

There are few changes to the Terrain for 2024, and the main difference is the addition of two new paint colors: Riptide Metallic and Downpour Metallic.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2024 GMC Terrain starts at $30,095 and goes up to $39,995 depending on the trim and options.

To keep the Terrain's price from getting too out of hand, we'd stick with the SLE model. It comes standard with plenty of equipment that compact-SUV buyers now consider must-haves, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, touchscreen infotainment, and a host of driver-assistance features.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Terrain comes standard with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine teamed with a nine-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive. We haven't tested one yet, but we put that engine through our testing regimen fitted to its mechanical twin, the Chevrolet Equinox ; it took 8.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. The Terrain provides its passengers with a comfortable, cosseting ride. Although the softly sprung suspension is a boon on long highway drives, the comfort-oriented setup drains the compact crossover of driver engagement once the tarmac gets twisty. Likewise, the direct but syrupy steering, which provides effortless turn-in at low speeds, proves as uninformative as a mob boss in a police interrogation room.

2022 gmc terrain

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA estimates the Terrain with front-wheel drive will earn up to 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway; going with all-wheel drive drops the highway estimate to 28 mpg. We've yet to put the Terrain through our real-world highway fuel-economy test, but we'll update this story when we do. For more information about the Terrain's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

A spacious and accommodating interior is let down by subpar build quality and a middling mix of materials. Meanwhile, the Terrain's ergonomically challenged push-button shifter sprinkles salt in the compact crossover's interior wounds. It consists of several switches that look like power window controls, located low on the center console and less than intuitive to use. Although it's something we think owners would grow accustomed to over time, we found the small buttons difficult to locate at a glance—especially when groping for reverse—making it difficult to pull off three-point turns quickly or operate the transmission's manual mode. The Terrain is an amenable partner for lugging large loads of various sizes. Credit a standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat, as well as an available fold-flat front seat. The Terrain's cargo area offers class-competitive space. In our carry-on luggage test, the Terrain held 24 cases with the rear seats folded; those in search of the absolute maximum cargo room will be better served—albeit only slightly—by the CR-V.

2022 gmc terrain interior

Infotainment and Connectivity

Easy to operate and quick to respond to commands, the Terrain's infotainment system benefits from clear graphics, logical menus, and the latest in-car connectivity features. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot are all standard. An in-dash navigation system is standard on the top Denali and is available on other models. A head-up display is available—it's standard on the Denali and optional on the SLT and AT4—but unlike other GM vehicles which project this feature onto the windshield, the Terrain utilizes a pop-up panel on the top of the dashboard.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

A host of driver-assistance features is standard and more can be added as options. For more information about the Terrain's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

GMC's warranty matches those of most of the Terrain's class competitors. Shoppers seeking more coverage ought to look at models such as the Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson .

  • Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • Complimentary maintenance is covered for the first visit

  • GMC has teased the third-generation Terrain for the first time.
  • The first image of the crossover shows updated headlights and front fascia.
  • Expected to share a lot with the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox, GMC plans to reveal the Terrain later this year.

Here it is, folks. Our first look at the third-generation Terrain has been provided by GMC, giving us a taste of what the new headlights will look like.

The teaser shows the more rugged AT4 model, hence the dark trim surrounding the grille. Widening our scope, it seems that the grille will grow with the generational update since the new headlights look narrower than those of the outgoing model.

GMC promises that the next-generation Terrain will be “bolder and more assertive” than the outgoing model but stopped from sharing any additional new info.

As ever, the crossover is expected to share a lot in common with the Chevrolet Equinox , which has also been redesigned for the 2025 model year. Now in its fourth generation, the Equinox grew two inches wider with its redesign but kept similar proportions to the 2024 model otherwise.

2023 GMC Terrain

The big changes were to the interior, and we expect the GMC Terrain to benefit from a similar set of updates. They include an 11-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.3-inch infotainment screen with Google built-in — a big improvement over the outgoing model’s seven-inch touchscreen. Overall, the interior design of the Equinox just looks better, with soft-touch materials, and physical climate control buttons.

Under the hood, the Equinox benefits from a refreshed 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The power unit still makes 175 hp (131 kW / 177 PS) and 203 lb-ft (275 Nm) of torque, but new software improves fuel economy. Front-wheel-drive models get a CVT transmission, while all-wheel-drive models get an eight-speed auto.

GMC says it will unveil the new Terrain later this year. The automaker is also updating the Yukon in the coming months, while the new 2024 Acadia is set to hit dealers this spring.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

cruise control gmc terrain

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

cruise control gmc terrain

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

cruise control gmc terrain

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

cruise control gmc terrain

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

cruise control gmc terrain

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

cruise control gmc terrain

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

cruise control gmc terrain

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

cruise control gmc terrain

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

cruise control gmc terrain

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

cruise control gmc terrain

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

cruise control gmc terrain

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

cruise control gmc terrain

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

cruise control gmc terrain

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

cruise control gmc terrain

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

cruise control gmc terrain

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

cruise control gmc terrain

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

cruise control gmc terrain

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-21 06:16

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

Ch. 9 The Development of Russia

Ivan i and the rise of moscow, learning objective.

  • Outline the key points that helped Moscow become so powerful and how Ivan I accomplished these major victories
  • Moscow was considered a small trading outpost under the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal into the 13th century.
  • Power struggles and constant raids under the Mongol Empire’s Golden Horde caused once powerful cities, such as Kiev, to struggle financially and culturally.
  • Ivan I utilized the relative calm and safety of the northern city of Moscow to entice a larger population and wealth to move there.
  • Alliances between Golden Horde leaders and Ivan I saved Moscow from many of the raids and destruction of other centers, like Tver.

A rival city to Moscow that eventually lost favor under the Golden Horde.

Grand Prince of Vladimir

The title given to the ruler of this northern province, where Moscow was situated.

The Rise of Moscow

Moscow was only a small trading outpost in the principality of Vladimir-Suzdal in Kievan Rus’ before the invasion of Mongol forces during the 13th century. However, due to the unstable environment of the Golden Horde, and the deft leadership of Ivan I at a critical time during the 13th century, Moscow became a safe haven of prosperity during his reign. It also became the new seat of power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Ivan I (also known as Ivan Kalita) was born around 1288 to the Prince of Moscow, Daniil Aleksandrovich. He was born during a time of devastation and upheaval in Rus’. Kiev had been overtaken by the invading Mongol forces in 1240, and most of the Rus’ principalities had been absorbed into the Golden Horde of the Mongol Empire by the time Ivan was born. He ascended to the seat of Prince of Moscow after the death of his father, and then the death of his older brother Yury.

image

Ivan I. He was born around 1288 and died in either 1340 or 1341, still holding the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir.

Ivan I stepped into a role that had already been expanded by his predecessors. Both his older brother and his father had captured nearby lands, including Kolomna and Mozhaisk. Yury had also made a successful alliance with the Mongol leader Uzbeg Khan and married his sister, securing more power and advantages within the hierarchy of the Golden Horde.

Ivan I continued the family tradition and petitioned the leaders of the Golden Horde to gain the seat of Grand Prince of Vladimir. His other three rivals, all princes of Tver, had previously been granted the title in prior years. However they were all subsequently deprived of the title and all three aspiring princes also eventually ended up murdered. Ivan I, on the other hand, garnered the title from Khan Muhammad Ozbeg in 1328. This new title, which he kept until his death around 1340, meant he could collect taxes from the Russian lands as a ruling prince and position his tiny city as a major player in the Vladimir region.

Moscow’s Rise

During this time of upheaval, the tiny outpost of Moscow had multiple advantages that repositioned this town and set it up for future prosperity under Ivan I. Three major contributing factors helped Ivan I relocate power to this area:

  • It was situated in between other major principalities on the east and west so it was often protected from the more devastating invasions.
  • This relative safety, compared to Tver and Ryazan, for example, started to bring in tax-paying citizens who wanted a safe place to build a home and earn a livelihood.
  • Finally, Moscow was set up perfectly along the trade route from Novgorod to the Volga River, giving it an economic advantage from the start.

Ivan I also spurred on the growth of Moscow by actively recruiting people to move to the region. In addition, he bought the freedom of people who had been captured by the extensive Mongol raids. These recruits further bolstered the population of Moscow. Finally, he focused his attention on establishing peace and routing out thieves and raiding parties in the region, making for a safe and calm metaphorical island in a storm of unsettled political and military upsets.

image

Kievan Rus’ 1220-1240. This map illustrates the power dynamics at play during the 13th century shortly before Ivan I was born. Sarai, the capital of the Golden Horde, sat to the southeast, while Moscow (not visible on this map) was tucked up in the northern forests of Vladimir-Suzdal.

Ivan I knew that the peace of his region depended upon keeping up an alliance with the Golden Horde, which he did faithfully. Moscow’s increased wealth during this era also allowed him to loan money to neighboring principalities. These regions then became indebted to Moscow, bolstering its political and financial position.

In addition, a few neighboring cities and villages were subsumed into Moscow during the 1320s and 1330s, including Uglich, Belozero, and Galich. These shifts slowly transformed the tiny trading outpost into a bustling city center in the northern forests of what was once Kievan Rus’.

Russian Orthodox Church and The Center of Moscow

Ivan I committed some of Moscow’s new wealth to building a splendid city center and creating an iconic religious setting. He built stone churches in the center of Moscow with his newly gained wealth. Ivan I also tempted one of the most important religious leaders in Rus’, the Orthodox Metropolitan Peter, to the city of Moscow. Before the rule of the Golden Horde the original Russian Orthodox Church was based in Kiev. After years of devastation, Metropolitan Peter transferred the seat of power to Moscow where a new Renaissance of culture was blossoming. This perfectly timed transformation of Moscow coincided with the decades of devastation in Kiev, effectively transferring power to the north once again.

Peter of Moscow and scenes from his life as depicted in a 15th-century icon. This religious leader helped bring cultural power to Moscow by moving the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church there during Ivan I’s reign.

One of the most lasting accomplishments of Ivan I was to petition the Khan based in Sarai to designate his son, who would become Simeon the Proud, as the heir to the title of Grand Prince of Vladimir. This agreement a line of succession that meant the ruling head of Moscow would almost always hold power over the principality of Vladimir, ensuring Moscow held a powerful position for decades to come.
