CRUISING , FLASHPACKING

Cinematic voyages: 20 unforgettable cruise ship movies.

Are you looking for inspiration to plan your first cruise ? Take a cinematic voyage with my pick of movies set on a cruise ship.

Not all of these cruise ship movies are masterpieces (although some are). A few are utter stinkers. However, each of them showcases aspects of life on the high seas.

Although I have indicated the availability of these films on Netflix and Amazon Prime there may be regional variations. Information here relates to the UK market in March 2024.

Classic Movies About Cruise Ships

Let’s start with the best movies about cruise ships, from films from Hollywood’s Golden Age to a science fiction classic.

Now, Voyager (1942)

Now, Voyager is not only one of the best movies set on a cruise ship but it is also one of my favourite films of all time. I blub like a baby each time I watch it.

Cowed by her domineering mother, middle-aged neurotic Boston heiress Charlotte Vale (a stupendous Bette Davis) takes a cruise after a restorative stay in a sanatorium. Whilst on board, she falls in love with the married Jerry (Paul Henreid).

The movie is famous for an iconic scene where Paul Henreid’s character lights two cigarettes and gives one to Bette Davis.

A masterpiece of a movie.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

This melodrama directed by Leo McCarey and starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is considered to be one of the most romantic films of all time.

Playboy Nickie (Grant) and Terry (Kerr) fall in love on a transatlantic cruise to New York. Despite being engaged to other people, they agree to meet in six months at the top of the Empire State Building. But will all go to plan?

An Affair to Remember was introduced to a new generation of cinema-goers when it was featured in the 1993 movie Sleepless in Seattle .

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 87%

Death on the Nile (1978)

Agatha Christie’s 1937 murder mystery has been adapted for the silver screen three times but the original film version is the best of the bunch (don’t go near Kenneth Branagh’s woeful 2022 remake).

Directed by John Guillermin, Death on the Nile was Peter Ustinov’s first appearance as Hercule Poirot and perhaps his best. Soon after Poirot boards a ship for a luxurious cruise down the Nile, a newlywed heiress is discovered murdered on board. Who is her murderer?

The Fifth Element (1997)

Welcome to a cruise ship of the future.

For my money, Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element is up there with the best science fiction movies of all time. Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis giving one of his finest performances) is a 23rd-century cab driver who is unwittingly pulled into a search for a mysterious fifth element that will prevent an apocalyptic event.

Much of the action in the final third of the movie takes place on Fhloston Paradise, a space cruise ship patronised by the rich and powerful. This superliner features twelve swimming pools with two VIP pools, dozens of high-end restaurants and a concert hall.

A glimpse of the future of cruising? Minus the giant fireball of course.

Disaster Movies Set on a Cruise Ship

The poseidon adventure (1972).

The 1970s was the decade for disaster movies featuring all-star ensemble casts and The Poseidon Adventure gets my vote as the best disaster film set on a cruise ship.

This multi-nominated movie – it went on to win two Oscars – centres on the ageing SS Poseidon on her final voyage from New York to Athens. After it is upended by a tsunami on New Year’s Day, it’s a race against time to bring the survivors to safety.

Spoiler alert; not many passengers make it.

  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 81%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 76%

Titanic (1997)

The Oscar-winning, multi-nominated Titanic is one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Directed by James Cameron and starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, this epic movie about one of the most famous cruise ships in history is also one of the most expensive movies ever made.

The sinking of the Titanic is viewed through the lens of a fictional relationship across the social divide between Rose (Winslet), and Jack (DiCaprio).

  • Running time: 3 hours 15 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 87%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 69%

A Night to Remember (1958)

Despite Titanic ’s many gongs, I far prefer this treatment of the sinking of the ill-fated cruise ship.

Filmed in a semi-documentary style, A Night to Remember sticks closely to the facts of the ship’s sinking, unimpeded by fictional sub-plots. This riveting film portrays the events of the fateful night of 15 th April 1912 from the perspective of the luxury liner’s second officer, Charles Lightoller (Kenneth More).

Movies to Make You Laugh

Monkey business (1931).

lobby card of monkey business one of the best cruise ship movies showing 3 of the marx brotheres

Monkey Business was the Marx Brothers’ third feature comedy and takes place on a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic to the USA.

Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo play four stowaways who are forced to work for a pair of feuding gangsters to evade capture by the ship’s crew. After the ship docks, the zany quartet become unlikely heroes when one of the gangsters kidnaps the other’s daughter.

Out to Se a (1997)

Out to Sea is not Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon’s finest cinematic outing by any stretch of the imagination but it is a harmless bit of escapist fun.

Hunting for lonely women with hefty bank balances, Charlie (Matthau) coaxes his widower brother-in-law Herb (Lemmon) into working with him as a dance host on an all-expenses-paid luxury cruise. Under the watchful eye of the cruise director (played by Brent Spiner from Star Trek ), Charlie pursues wealthy socialite Liz (Dyan Cannon) and Herb unexpectedly falls for Vivian (Gloria DeHaven).

The Parent Trap (1998)

This romantic comedy directed and co-written by Nancy Meyers stars Lindsay Lohan playing the role of identical twins who discover their relationship when they are sent to the same summer camp. The twins then set to work trying to reunite their parents.

While much of The Parent Trap takes place on land, there are some scenes set aboard Cunard’s now-retired Queen Elizabeth 2 (they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California).

  • Running time : 2 hours 7 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 86%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 70%

Like Father (2018)

In this predictable rom-com, jilted bride Rachel (Kristen Bell) ends up on her honeymoon Caribbean cruise with her estranged father Harry (Kelsey Grammer).

Like Father is set aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas , so lovingly filmed that it feels like an infomercial at times.

  • Running time: 1 hour 43 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 46%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 47%
  • Available for streaming on Netflix

Carry on Cruising (1962)

Carry on films are a guilty pleasure for me. Cinematic masterpieces they are not but they are silly fun from a more innocent time.

Carry on Cruising is very much in this mould.

Sid James plays Wellington Crowther, the captain of SS Happy Wanderer, who is forced to replace five absent crew members at short notice. Not only are these the most incompetent shipmates to set foot on deck, but the passengers are no picnic.

  • Running time: 1 hour 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: N/A
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 51%

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Shot in glorious Technicolor and featuring a razor-sharp screenplay, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is one of the best musical comedies set on the seven seas.

Showgirl Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) sets sail for Paris with her friend Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), where she plans to marry her wealthy beau, Gus Esmond Jr. However, her plan is placed in jeopardy by the watchful eye of a private detective hired by Mr Esmund Sr. and by Lorelei’s love of diamonds.

Royal Wedding (1951)

Do you fancy on-board entertainment Hollywood-style?

In the run-up to the wedding between the then Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, an American brother-and-sister song-and-dance team Tom (Fred Astaire) and Ellen Bowen (Jane Powell) set sail for London. Then love intervenes for both siblings.

  • Running time: 1 hour 32 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 92%

Shall We Dance? (1937)

Was there ever a more perfect recipe than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers performing to the sublime music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin?

Set on a transatlantic sailing from Paris to New York, Shall We Dance? features Astaire as Pete “Petrov” Peters, a Russian ballet dancer, and Rogers as Linda Keene, a musical-comedy star. As a publicity stunt to prolong Linda’s career, her agent leaks to the press that the two performers are married.

Will a fake marriage turn into the real thing?

This exhilarating musical features some of the greatest songs ever composed, including They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off.

  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 84%

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Starring Doris Day in her film debut and choreographed by Busby Berkeley, Romance on the High Seas is a farce with romantic misunderstandings at its heart. Georgia Garret (Day) is a nightclub singer who is hired to assume the identity of a socialite, Elvira Kent, on a cruise to Rio de Janeiro to allow Kent to remain at home to spy on her suspected unfaithful husband,

Filming locations for Romance on the High Seas included Rio de Janeiro and Cartegena in Colombia.

Dramatic Movies

Ship of fools (1965).

This eclectic group of passengers on a cruise ship bound for pre-war Germany from Mexico represents a microcosm of 1930s society. Picking up eight Oscar nominations and directed by Stanley Kramer, Ship of Fools features a stellar ensemble cast including Vivien Leigh (in her final film role), Lee Marvin and George Segal.

Although the action takes place almost entirely on an ocean liner, the movie was filmed on a soundstage at Paramount Studios.

  • Running time : 2 hours 29 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 64%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 77%

Table for Five (1983)

In this poignant melodrama, divorced father J.P. Tannen (Jon Voight) takes his three children on a Mediterranean cruise in an attempt to reconnect with them. However, he quickly realises that this is not that easy and is faced with an impossible decision when he learns of a tragedy back home.

Partly filmed on MS Vistafjord (built for the now defunct Norwegian American Line ), shooting locations for Table for Five included Rome , Genoa, Haifa in Israel , Athens and Cairo and Alexandria in Egypt.

  • Running time: 2 hours 2 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 67%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 59%
  • Not currently for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime or to buy on DVD or Blu-Ray

Speed 2 Cruise Control  (1997)

Keanu Reeves was wise to decline the lead role in this lame sequel to Speed . In his place, Jason Patric teamed up with Sandra Bullock as they battled to get all of the passengers on a Caribbean cruise to safety when disaster strikes.

Seabourn Legend was rented for six weeks to film the movies and its multiple filming locations were used including those in the USA, the Caribbean and France.

  • Running time: 2 hours 5 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 4%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score : 16%

And the Award for the Worst Cruise Movie Ever Made Goes to …

Jack and jill (2011).

If you thought that Speed 2 Cruise Control  was bad, this is the cinematic turkey to beat all cinematic turkeys.

Improbably, Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill who join their family on a cruise vacation. Jack and Jill is so unfunny and its plot so preposterous, that I don’t have the will to say any more about it.

This became the first film to sweep the board of the Razzies, winning in each category including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor, Worst Actress, and Worst Screenplay. The cruise ship scenes were filmed aboard Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas .

  • Running time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score: 3%
  • Rotten Tomatoes audience score: 36%

And that’s a wrap.

Whether you are looking for inspiration to plan a cruise or simply looking for recommendations for a sofa and popcorn night at home, I hope that this cruise ship movies list hits the spot.

Watch, dream and book that cruise.

42 Cruise Hacks: Packing and Other Cruise Tips  – 2024

Cruise Hacks: Before You Go and More

Here are our personal cruise hacks (tricks) and other packing tips to make your next cruise easier and more enjoyable…

Each time you cruise, you’re likely to become a better cruiser.

You figure things out through your own experience, pick up a few tips from other cruisers, and learn about the different types of cruises (e.g., river vs. ocean) that can vary widely.

All that experience makes your next voyage easier and more enjoyable. These are some of the tips we’ve collected over the years. Maybe one or more will be helpful to you.

On a Douro River cruise on Viking Star

This short list of our favorite cruise hacks is broken down into three categories:

Cruise Hacks for Packing

Check the cruise line website

Almost every cruise line has a FAQ section on its website with essential information about dress codes, prohibited items, health and safety protocols, and accessibility services.

Be sure to read it even if you have been on prior cruises. Rules change and vary from ship to ship and line to line.

Read your boarding documents before leaving home

Your boarding documents will likely include information about dress codes and special events.

Check Cruise Critic boards or Facebook groups

You’ll likely be able to find a group going on the same cruise as you. You can also find out helpful hints before you do. You may even want to make plans to meet a new friend who is going on the same cruise as you.

Make a packing list and check it twice

As soon as you book your cruise, start making a list of what you want to pack and take.

Putting items on the list will unclutter your mind and ensure you don’t forget something important. You can even create the list on your smartphone.

When you return from your cruise, look it over again, delete the items you never used or thought about, add what you forgot, and save it for your next cruise.

Below are some of the items on my cruise packing list.

Prepare for AC and ocean breezes

Cruise Hair Sun Hat

For women, always pack a shawl or pashmina. Most restaurants and theaters on ships are air-conditioned and those venues can get chilly in the evenings.

Shawls take u p minimal space or weight in your suitcase and add a touch of elegance and color to evening outfits.

Be sure to pack a hat to protect you from the sun, whether on the ship’s deck or on a shore excursion. I love this whimsical baseball cap , perfect for a cruise.

Bring a whiff of home

Bring a small bottle of your favorite feel-good scent. It’s always nice to have a touch of home when you travel and a spritz of fragrance fits the bill; it also doubles as an air freshener in the bathroom.

Bring a bar of soap?

Most cruise ships offer liquid soap (as well as shampoo and conditioner). If, like my husband, you prefer bar soap for your shower, bringing one with you is no trouble.

And once it’s wet, throw it away so you don’t have to carry it home!

Bring a refillable water bottle

If you aren’t on a luxury cruise, bring a refillable water bottle to use at the gym or spa, where you’ll often find citrus-infused water that has been purified. Rinse it out each evening.

Purchase a hanging toiletry bag

Bagsmart Travel Toiletry Bag

Packing your toiletries and cosmetics in a hanging bag will keep items dry and your sink clear of clutter.

I like this large-size travel bag from Bagsmart Travel Toiletry Bag because it’s water-resistant and has zipped compartments to keep everything organized.

Forget the bling

Pack a few pieces of common sense travel jewelry to wear on the cruise that will make you feel glamorous—but free you of the worry about losing something precious while traveling.

I’ll never forget a shore excursion in Marseilles when I saw a brazen thief walk up to a fellow passenger and rip an expensive gold necklace off her neck.

Pack a “little black dress” for him

Vineyard Vines Nnutical blue polo

Buy your husband a nice dark-collared, short-sleeved polo shirt. To luck sharp, I would invest in one of high quality that will become a permanent part of his wardrobe. Ralph Lauren and Vineyard Vines are two brands that look crisp and wash well.

No matter where he dines on board, a black or nautical blue polo shirt (depending on his color preference) is comfortable and easily transitions into the evening once he’s run out of dress shirts.

Pack the right shoes for comfort and safety

For women, we recommend packing three different types of shoes:

Skechers Slip On Go Walk Sneakers

These are perfect for getting through airport security and comfortable enough to wear on shorter walks on your cruise.

They also have rubber soles so you will be less likely to slip if the deck gets wet. They can also fill in for a pair of slippers at night.

Frank Mully Round Toe Ballet Flats

Frank Mully ballet slippers

They are priced right and similar to the ones featured by a more expensive brand. I recommend tan or black to work with any outfit.

Rothy’s

Rothy's Ballet Flats

If you want to splurge and go for the Real McCoy, you won’t be disappointed by these Rothy’s Ballet Flats.

They come in a rainbow of fun colors as well as neutral. I have a few pairs and always use them for travel because they are comfortable, lightweight and easy to pack.

The ones shown are in nautical blue, a great choice for a winter or summer cruise.

Vionic Slip-On Walking Shoes

You’ll definitely want a pair of supportive shoes for walking, jogging and biking.

These Vionic slip-ons are a great choice. They have orthotic insoles for arch support and come in a variety of widths, including extra-wide.

Flip-Flops (optional)

If you have extra room in your suitcase, you may want to pack a pair of flip-flops ( I like Havaianas ). You can wear them when you go to the pool or spa, and they double for comfortable slippers in your cabin. (The terry ones, often provided on ships. can have slippery soles.)

After a lengthy shore excursion with lots of walking, particularly in warm weather climates that might cause your feet to swell, it’s great to be able to slip on a pair of non-binding shoes.

Stay powered

Compact Power Strip

Bring a travel power strip (or two, one for each side of the bed).

It’s unusual to find all the outlets you need for electronic and electrical gadgets in most staterooms. Bringing an electrical strip allows you to charge all your gear and use a hair blower and curling iron simultaneously.

Just be sure the strip matches the voltage and plug format (which may require an adapter) available on the ship as well as your appliance requirements. Most computers, smartphones and camera battery chargers will work on 110-240V, but cosmetic appliances vary.

Both compact and lightweight, this highly-rated, round power strip (shown) is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Travel Flat Power Strip

Although compact, it has three regular outlets, four USB ports (2 of them USB C), and offers no-surge protection.

The wide-space outlets, with 2.4 inches of space between them, are larger than the standard 1.5-inch socket. This allows you to fit the big adapters that often come with laptops and other electronic devices.

Hang on to the essentials

Bring a small purse or wristlet to take to meals on the ship. After you get your ship identification card and place your valuables in the safe, you will only need a keycard, cellphone and a tissue. A small purse can take a great deal of weight off your shoulders.

Men may prefer to wear a cruise lanyard around their neck with a plastic cardholder for the cabin key.

Don’t weigh yourself down

MZ Wallace Metro Crossbody

You’re likely to have a large tote that you’ve brought on the plane, but you don’t want to be weighed down with a large bag when you’re walking or transferring to a tender.

A cross-body bag is easy to carry and also can be placed right in front of you, away from pickpockets who prey on tourists.

This right-sized MZ Wallace Metro Crossbody Bag is large enough to carry your wallet, keycard, cellphone, and sunglasses. It is extremely lightweight, with two convenient outside pockets and an adjustable shoulder strap. Perfect for excursions, I also use it all the time when I take walks at home.

Prepare for a dip

Miraclesuit Swimwear Scoop Neck Tankini Top

Remember to take a bathing suit on almost every cruise (even on an expedition cruise to the Antarctic, you may want to use a hot tub).

The one time I didn’t take one, the weather in Monaco unexpectedly turned unseasonably warm, and I couldn’t take advantage of the ship pool.

There’s a saying that you can buy anything you’ve forgotten to pack if you bring enough money.

But for me (and I suspect most women), a bathing suit is one of the most difficult items to find and purchase in another country.

Figure-flattering Miraclesuits are a favorite of mine. I especially love the two-piece models with tankini tops. On a cruise, you can wash the bottom with each wear but wear the top several times.

Think sunny thoughts

Don’t forget a pair of optical-quality sunglasses. Sun reflects off the water, and you want to protect your eyes. They can also add a touch of glamour. On the other hand, you probably can leave your umbrella at home because you’ll find one in your cabin.

Use a travel laundry bag

You don’t want to co-mingle your dirty clothes with your clean clothes. Especially on Caribbean cruises, clothes can get sweaty and musty.

Pack a featherweight, inexpensive travel laundry bag, or use one of the bags intended for shipboard laundry and stow it at the bottom of your closet.

Out damn spot

Cruise Hacks: Spot laundry detergent sheets

Spot Detergent Sheets are the perfect take-me-along for laundry. They are featherweight, eco-friendly, and have a lovely scent. You don’t have to pay for detergent in your ship’s self-service laundry room because you’ll have these with you.

You can purchase a 10-pack for less than $2, and you may decide to use them at home so you don’t have to lug big jugs of detergent home from the supermarket.

Cruise with Bounce

The perfect partner to Spot Detergent: Bring along some Bounce dryer sheets . These are also light as a feather, add a fresh fragrance to your suitcase, and are great for removing static.

Needless to say, they can be invaluable if you opt to use the ship’s self-service laundry.

Ziploc bags can be handy for a variety of reasons. I always use them to pack my clothes; they keep them organized and neat. They are also great for storing a snack you’ve brought back from an excursion in your cabin. I previously wrote a post about the nine ways I use Ziploc  when traveling.

Get your bearings

Sea-Band anti-nausea wristbands

If you are prone to motion sickness, prepare ahead.

While large ships are usually stable, the tenders used to get to ports can be rocky, especially in bad weather.

In addition to seasickness, innocent cruisers can get felled by long bus rides during shore excursions over hilly terrains.

We like these anti-nausea Sea-Bands because they can be used to help prevent nausea and alleviate it once it’s started. Also, they offer relief without the use of medications (they can be used with Dramamine) and their potential side effects.

Some people swear by the use of ginger. You can usually pick up a pack of ginger candy at TJ Maxx. Check with your internist and see what they recommend.

Do your research

It’s a good idea to do some research on the ports you’ll be visiting before your cruise.

We use a multimedia approach: We check out YouTube videos and hit the library for books (novels, too) to familiarize ourselves with our destination and help us decide what we want to do, see and taste. (That’s what made me be sure to taste Pasteis de Belem tarts in Lisbon).

If you don’t have time to read up before your cruise, load a novel or two on your Kindle or download an audiobook. I recently finished reading The Good Left Undone , a historical novel set in Viareggio (Tuscany), and I can’t wait to retrace the author’s steps.

Don’t overdo it

Resist the urge to overpack. After you’ve decided what you want to take, carefully prune your suitcase and take out whatever isn’t necessary (except for the bathing suit).

Some people swear about the efficiency and sustainability of traveling with a capsule wardrobe.

Heavy bags are hard to manage, and an overpacked bag may be hard to stow under your bed in the cabin.

Pay it forward

It’s a nice idea to pack a few small gifts and/or notecards to thank the dedicated crew who served you during the course of the cruise.

No. It is not a substitute for tipping.

The gesture adds a personal touch that may be meaningful for people who work hard, usually far from home and family. Even a small souvenir from your hometown can make a hit.

Keep a copy

Of course. Be sure you have all your important documents (e.g., passport, proof of vaccination, airline tickets, and cruise documents).

Make copies of them to keep on your phone in case you lose them.

A few other hints

Whenever possible, reserve your table at the specialty restaurants before you embark. Depending on the ship and line, these reservations may be complimentary or available at a reasonable additional cost. They break the boredom of eating in the same places.

Spaces fill up quickly; if you didn’t book them in advance, do so on your first day onboard. And make sure that your dining reservations don’t inadvertently overlap with long shore excursions.

Speaking of shore excursions, also book them as early as you can. If you delay, popular ones may already be fully booked.

On Regent Seven Seas at the Port of Miami

Keep it handy

Hand carry a small suitcase or tote bag with essentials you’ll want to have at hand when you board (e.g. medication, change of clothes, etc.).

It’s tempting to let porters deliver all your baggage to your cabin, but depending on the size of your ship and when you board, it may take time, even hours, for your suitcase to reach you.

If you strategically pack a small carry-on with your valuables and essentials, you can feel secure and freshen up when you get to your cabin.

Pack, unpack

Unpack fully. One of the joys of cruising is having to pack and unpack only once. Do the job as soon as possible so you won’t live out of a suitcase.

Most cabins are so well designed that they offer a place for everything.

Don’t be left hanging

Don’t be shy about asking for extra hangers. There are never enough hangers in cabins (or hotel rooms, for that matter).

Since you’ll likely be staying for at least a week, ask your cabin steward for additional ones at the beginning of the voyage so you don’t have to hang layers of clothes on the same hangers.

Ask for extras

Maintain a good relationship with your cabin steward who can provide you with extra pillows, blankets or linens if you need them.

Don’t let it weigh on you

Weigh yourself when you board and whenever else you feel the need. Don’t bury your head in the sand if you worry about gaining weight from all the good food.

Most onboard gyms have a scale, so you can monitor any potential weight gain.

Take the stairs rather than wait for an elevator. Walk the deck each morning.

Weight loss while cruising seems to be a less common problem.:-)  But don’t be too strict with yourself! Good food (and not having to cook) is one of the great pleasures of cruising!

Tide Stain Remover Pen

Make use of the laundry/dry cleaning service onboard.

If you find a stain on something you absolutely love, get it dry-cleaned as soon as possible.

Most dry cleaning services are only slightly more costly on board than they will be at home. The extra expense will be far less than the cost of a permanently stained garment.

In a pinch, I always carry a Tide stain remover pen .

Call room service

If you have an early morning excursion or like to wake up slowly, take advantage of free in-cabin room service (available on most ships).

Order a relaxed breakfast delivered to your cabin before you start the day.

Make efficient use of your space

Because staterooms tend to be much smaller than your space at home, ask your cabin steward to remove anything you aren’t using from your stateroom. Do you really need that large ice bucket on the counter if you drink all your drinks at bars and lounges?

Listen to the sounds of the elevator

If you are unsure which elevator in the bank will be next, listen to the rings. One ring means it’s going up; two means it’s on its way down.

Cruise Hacks: On the Shore

Viking Star shore excursion in Bruges, Belgium

Play hooky from shore excursions once in a while or create on-your-own excursions .

Especially on port-intensive cruises, there may be little time to enjoy all the onboard amenities. Allow yourself some time to relax at the pool, spa, or on your stateroom balcony.

Do it yourself

While we have had wonderful experiences on some shore excursions sponsored by cruise lines , both ocean and river, we’ve also loved getting away from the crowds who are following tour guides with lollipops . It’s always fun to explore and discover on our own.

Often, ships are docked within close walking distance of a town or city, or the cruise line has a convenient bus service to take passengers to and from.

Like many, we travel for food:-)

Make it a point to eat a few meals off the ship. Yes, meals are included (and can be very good), but no cruise can replicate the ambiance and authenticity of eating with locals and tasting local specialties.

If you are a food lover, do some research on Yelp or Tripadvisor before you go. If a restaurant is very popular, you may need to make reservations in advance, sometimes far in advance. We especially love to try specialty foods at each destination.

Many cruise lines also offer food-centric shore excursions, including market visits, wine tours, cooking classes, etc.

Avoid the port

Get away from the port, proper. If you have the time and opportunity, try to explore the more off-the-beaten-path places, either independently or on excursions offered by your cruise line.

Ports are notorious for their crowds, ticky-tacky souvenirs, and pickpockets . This is another instance when research can help you make good choices.

Grab the right seat on the bus

If you like taking photos (and who doesn’t?), avoid the bus seats with window stickers.

Before you choose your seat on the bus, look up and see if seatbelt and no-smoking reminder stickers will interfere with your views (and your photography).

CRUISE HACKS: STAYING HEALTHY

Cruise lines have ended earlier passenger capacity restrictions on ships, dropped masking requirements, and reduced the proportion of passengers/crew who must be vaccinated. Nevertheless, COVID isn’t over.

What follows is a short packing list of items to bring to help protect yourself from COVID when cruising :

1-  Bring an adequate supply of antigen test kits .

If you’ve been exposed to someone with the virus and are experiencing symptoms, you may need multiple tests to ensure you haven’t become infected. The most recent FDA advice suggests repeat tests, spaced two days apart, to reduce the odds of false negatives.

2—Although almost all lines have eliminated masking requirements, bring an adequate supply of disposable high-quality masks when you’re near large numbers of people who aren’t social distancing, most likely at crowded ports. A mask can be handy if you come down with a respiratory virus onboard and want to ensure you don’t spread it to fellow passengers.

The decision of whether or not to mask (even when not required) has now largely been relegated to individuals. Here is some information on crafting your personal mask policy even if the cruisers around you are unmasked.

3—Use sanitizing wipes (like Lysol wipes) to minimize the possibility of the virus lingering on high-touch surfaces in your cabin (telephones, TV remotes, doorknobs, etc. ).

4- Frequent hand-washing is another pillar of COVID-19 and norovirus prevention.

It goes without saying: Use soap and water whenever you return to your cabin. Take advantage of hand sanitizing stations placed throughout cruise ships. Additionally, bring along a bottle of hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol) or, alternatively, hand wipes. These are useful when you’re in port.

You also will be protecting yourself from norovirus, which spreads quickly on ships and other congregate settings.

6- Bring extra underwear and download a few books on your Kindle in case you wind up quarantining before you get home.

Every trip requires a different packing strategy. Check out this glamping packing list .

7 Great Movies that Take Place on a Cruise

Sarah Bretz, Contributor

Sarah Bretz, Contributor

  • July 27, 2016

Most of us can probably say we love to watch a good movie now and then – especially ones that are centered on travel and adventure!  But did you know there are lots of films out there that are set fully or partially on our favorite method of transportation – cruise ships?  We’ve rounded up seven movies about cruising to watch…and this list is not extensive, so see what other ones you can find too!

1. Romance on the High Seas

This 1948 romance/comedy finds Doris Day’s character Georgia on a cruise instead of her friend Elvira – who backed out of her anniversary trip because she suspected her husband was cheating.  Little does Elvira know, her husband thinks she actually is on the cruise…and has hired a detective to spy on her.

DVD can be bought on Amazon by clicking here.

2. Jack and Jill

Adam Sandler plays twins Jack and Jill in this hilarious 2011 comedy (yes he plays both!) aboard  Allure of the Seas.   Jill comes to visit for the holiday’s, and together with their family they head out on a cruise vacation.  They get off on the wrong foot, and hilarity ensues.  Although this is considered one of the worst movies ever made, it still showcases a lot of  Allure ‘s awesome features – so you decide whether you want to sit through it.

Can be rented on Amazon Instant Video.

3. Out to Sea

Retired friends Charlie (Walter Matthau) and Herb (Jack Lemmon) pose as dance instructors on this much loved 1997 film.  Charlie convinces his recently widowed brother-in-law to come on the cruise, not telling him that he’ll need to dance.  Ship scenes were filmed aboard Holland America’s original  Westerdam  (now  Thomson Dream ).

4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

This 2011 movie is the third installment in the live-action chipmunks series, and this time the chipmunks, chipettes, and Dave go on a cruise aboard  Carnival Dream  for a musical awards show.  As usual, havoc erupts, and they find themselves on a deserted island.  This is a perfect movie for families to watch to get excited for an upcoming cruise.

5. Assault on a Queen

As you’ve probably guessed from the title, this 1966 film takes place on a Cunard ship –  Queen Mary  to be exact.  In it, Frank Sinatra (Mark) is a diver hired to search for sunken treasure.  He finds a U-boat, and their plan turns into a scheme to use the submarine to rob  Queen Mary.

6. Speed 2: Cruise Control

After saving a bus full of people in the first  Speed  movie, Annie (Sandra Bullock) is looking forward to a relaxing cruise with her boyfriend in this 1997 movie.  Their vacation becomes dangerous, though, when an explosion disables the ship’s communication and they realize someone else is controlling the vessel.  The film takes place aboard the luxury  Seabourn Legend  (now  Star Legend ).

7. The Parent Trap

While much of this 1998 movie takes place on land, there are some scenes set on a cruise ship, and I couldn’t help but include it.  Lindsay Lohan plays twins (yes, another twins movie where one person plays both!) that are working hard to reunite their parents, who haven’t seen each other in years.  While the ship scenes are set aboard  Queen Elizabeth 2,  they were actually filmed on  Queen Mary , which is docked in Long Beach, California.

21 tips and tricks that will make your first cruise go smoothly

Gene Sloan

Cruising is easy. Or so cruisers will tell you.

For starters, you only have to unpack once, even as you travel from place to place. You also don't have to go hunting for a restaurant every night. There usually are a bunch just steps away from your cabin with tables waiting for you. You'll also have no trouble finding entertainment.

But even in its simplicity, cruising still can be daunting for a first-timer. What should you bring? What should you plan on doing in ports? What is the best way to book?

As the head of The Points Guy's cruise content team , I get these sorts of questions all the time.

This brings me to the tips below. If you've read this far, you are likely a first-time cruiser looking for advice for an upcoming trip, and that's exactly what this story is meant to offer. It contains my list of 21 ways to make your first sailing go more smoothly.

It's a list drawn not just from my own experience over 25-plus years of cruising but also the observations of more than 100 cruising fans who shared their tips with TPG in a lively conversation on the topic at the TPG Lounge on Facebook. (If you're not a member yet, we highly encourage you to join.)

Arrive at your departure port a day ahead of schedule

If you only follow one piece of advice in this story, it should be this one. It is the only way to ensure you won't miss your ship — something that happens to cruisers more often than you would think.

Many cruises depart in the afternoon, so it might seem just fine to fly or drive to a port on the morning of departure. But all it takes is a moderate flight delay or a pile-up on the highway to upset those plans. If you're delayed in your arrival at the port, the ship will not wait for you.

If you're traveling overseas for a cruise, we recommend traveling to the port two or even three days in advance. This isn't just so you don't miss the ship. It's also so you have some time to recover from jet lag. European cruises, in particular, can be port-intensive, with lots of touring, so you want to be refreshed and ready to hit the ground running right after the cruise begins.

Pack your bathing suit in your carry-on

When you first arrive at a ship, before you even get on board, you'll likely be greeted by porters who will whisk away your luggage. It will be delivered to your room later in the day. This is a great convenience, as there's no need to haul your bags through the entire check-in progress. But it also means you might not have access to your luggage for many hours on your first day on board.

cruise tips movie

Be sure to pack anything you think you might need for these first hours of your cruise in your carry-on bag. This means things like medication, for sure, but also a phone charger, a bathing suit, a hat, sunscreen and other items that will let you head straight to the pool deck to start the fun.

Related: Use this packing list for your next cruise

Don't overpack

Use this strategy when packing for a cruise: Throw all the clothes you think you'll need on a cruise in a pile, and then take away half of them. You won't need them. Trust us.

Most cruising these days is casual, and you really only need a few outfits to rotate through a voyage. If things get dirty, it's no problem. Many ships have self-serve launderettes on cabin decks where you can run a load or two of laundry every few days. If not, you can send laundry out to be cleaned on board. It'll usually come back in a day or two.

The extra cost of doing a few loads of laundry on a ship is a small price to pay for the freedom of not having to lug a giant suitcase around as you travel to and from your ship. Plus, you'll want to save room in your suitcase for all the little treasures you're going to find along the way.

Bring your own drinks on board

Many first-time cruisers assume they can't bring their own drinks on board a ship. But many lines will allow this, usually with some limits. It's one way to save money when cruising, as drink prices on ships can be high.

Among the lines that will allow you to be your own bartender is Disney Cruise Line . Adults can bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or Champagne or six beers onto Disney ships at the start of a cruise and at every port of call. Note that these beverages must be packed in carry-on bags. At Royal Caribbean , the bring-your-own allowance is one bottle of wine or Champagne per passenger at boarding. You can also bring up to a dozen standard cans, bottles or cartons of nonalcoholic drinks per cabin.

One caveat: Many lines levy a "corkage fee" if you want to bring your wine into an onboard restaurant. Be sure to read the rules for your line before you bring any drinks on board.

Bring extra toiletries

Yes, you'll be able to find sunscreen, aspirin and Band-Aids on a cruise ship. But it'll cost you. Cruise lines know you're a captive audience and price their shipboard stores accordingly.

I have a small "go bag" of over-the-counter medicines that I throw into my suitcase for every cruise. It contains everything from cold medicine to seasickness pills. I rarely use any of it, but I also never get hit with a ridiculous toiletries charge.

While we're on the topic of sundries, don't forget extra batteries for your camera if you are bringing one.

Related: The ultimate guide to picking a cruise line

Bring these six other things, too

In addition to extra toiletries, cruising regulars often bring Clorox wipes or something similar to wipe down surfaces in their cabin upon arrival (and to bring along onshore excursions). I admit, I've never done this, though I know I should — if only to wipe off the remote control for the cabin TV.

Many cruisers also won't head to a ship without room freshener, a foldable shoe rack (which they hang in the cabin bathroom to store toiletries), a highlighter (to highlight activities on the daily planner) and a lanyard (to hold their cabin keycard). I am, of course, too cool to ever put a keycard lanyard around my neck, which means I lose my card once or twice on every trip. They always give me a new one at the front desk. My cruise team colleague Ashley Kosciolek also eschews lanyard-wearing on ships, but that didn't stop her from writing this wonderful guide to the coolest cruise lanyards around.

Some cruisers also swear by bringing magnets to ships to affix dinner invitations, excursion tickets and other important papers to their cabin walls. Walls on ships often are made with metal (even if they look like wood, thanks to faux wood veneers) and will hold a magnet. Some cruisers even bring magnets with hooks so they can hang up clothes and other items on their walls.

Skip the buffet on your first day on board

There's nothing more jammed than a cruise ship buffet on embarkation day. Everybody boarding heads straight up to it. To avoid the first-day buffet crowds, head to whatever secondary dining option is available. Sometimes, a ship will open one of its table-served eateries for lunch on embarkation day. It'll likely be much less crowded than the buffet.

Research ports in advance

There are some types of vacations — a beach trip, for instance — where you don't have to do much advanced research. You just sort of show up. Most cruises aren't this way — at least if you want to get the most out of them. At the heart of most cruises are port calls that, in many cases, are very short — often just a few hours. You want to have a plan for what to do in these ports, or you'll miss out on a big part of the cruising experience.

Once you know what ports you'll be visiting, research them as much as you can at travel sites such as The Points Guy. Here at TPG, we're starting to build out a series of home port and destination port guides for everywhere, from PortMiami to Bora Bora .

Join a Facebook group for your line

Another great place to get ideas for what to do in ports and on ships — and what to bring on a cruise, for that matter — are the many private Facebook groups dedicated to particular lines. I belong to a number of them, including the Royal Caribbean Cruises group, the COPs (Cruisers Opinion Page) group and the Holland America Line Fans group. You'll find thousands of cruise fans at these pages who often are more than willing to answer questions about their favorite line, its ships, its itineraries and the destinations on the itineraries. I've met some wonderful people in these groups, some of whom have become my longtime friends on Facebook.

Sign up for private tours

Booking a shore excursion directly through your cruise line is easy. You just check a box on an online form before sailing or while on board, and — poof! — it's all arranged. But booking tours through your line isn't the only option, and it's not always the best option. In many cases, you can save a lot of money — and get a better touring experience — by booking shore excursions through independent tour operators in ports or a tour booking service such as Viator or ToursByLocals .

Often, independent tours will be much more intimate than the tours offered directly through cruise lines. They might go to the same sites but in a small van instead of a big motorcoach. You might have just six or eight other people on a tour with you instead of nearly 40. If your group is big enough, you might even be able to book a private tour with an independent tour operator.

Related: The ultimate TPG guide to shore excursions

Independent tours can also take you to places that the cruise line-organized tours don't. Plus, they often come with excellent service. ToursByLocals has staff on hand around the clock to respond to questions, and — for those worried about missing your ship — they offer a return-to-ship guarantee with every tour.

Sign up for activities in advance or soon after boarding

Some lines will let you sign up for shows, tours and other activities (including meals at specialty restaurants) in advance of sailing using online portals. If you want to be sure that you get a seat for a specific show on a specific night or a specific tour or restaurant reservation time, it's a good idea to do this. It's not uncommon with some ships to find that some shows, tours and restaurant reservation times book up in advance.

If you don't sign up for activities in advance, a backup strategy is to do so just after you board a vessel. That said, whether you need to race to sign up for activities at the start of a voyage depends a lot on which ship you are on. I am more careful about signing up for many things in advance when I am sailing on a giant ship such as Royal Caribbean's record-breaking Wonder of the Seas, where thousands of other passengers are competing for the choicest reservations.

Don't feel like you have to do it all

While we're on the topic of signing up for activities, note that it's OK if you miss a few things. You don't have to do it all. In fact, you should force yourself to try to not do it all. Remember, you're on vacation. Relax. Take some downtime. Sit on your balcony, if you have one, and just stare out at the ocean for a couple of hours. You won't regret it.

Always carry the ship's contact information with you

When going ashore, always bring the ship's contact information with you. Those details are usually printed in the newsletter that's delivered to your cabin each night. If something goes wrong when you're away from the ship, you'll want to get in contact with the cruise line right away.

Keep your phone in airplane mode

Some of the biggest cruise ship horror stories you'll find on the internet are tales of cruising newbies who racked up thousands of dollars in cellphone charges while on ships. This can happen when you leave your phone turned on and, say, watch videos on the internet. Many phone plans — even international plans — do not include talking, texting and data on cruise ships, and you'll pay exorbitant roaming rates for such services that will show up weeks later on your phone bill.

There are ways to make calls and access the internet from ships without spending a boatload of money. You can buy a Wi-Fi package, for instance, that will let you make FaceTime calls and stream videos (on some ships) over Wi-Fi without using phone data.

Some phone companies have cruise-specific plans you can buy in advance of a voyage. But I personally never go that route. I keep it simple. I just put my phone in airplane mode the moment I step on board a ship and never switch it back on. I then turn on the phone's Wi-Fi, buy a Wi-Fi package and do all my calling, texting and internet surfing over Wi-Fi. That way, there's no way that I can be surprised by an unexpected charge.

Download the cruise app

A growing number of lines now have apps that you can download to your smartphone in advance of sailing. The apps vary in what they offer, but many will show you a daily list of activities and all of the things that you have reserved. Many also will let you make restaurant reservations and book shore excursions and other activities, and a few will let you order drinks and other items to wherever you happen to be standing. That's pretty cool, right? The best part: The apps will work on board even if you don't pay for a Wi-Fi package.

Use a travel agent to book

Given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process, trust us — we recommend that you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises to help you arrange things. A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. The agent can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage.

In addition, travel agents can often secure you extra onboard credit and other perks that you might not be able to get by booking directly with a line.

Related: Why you should always use a travel agent to book a cruise

Consider travel insurance

It's not always smooth seas when it comes to cruising — or any sort of travel. We hate to even bring it up, but you might need to cancel your cruise in advance due to the sudden onset of an illness. Or, maybe you'll fall ill during the cruise and need emergency medical attention. Maybe your flight to your ship gets canceled, and you miss the vessel's departure. These sorts of things can happen to cruisers, and they're all the sort of situations where you might benefit from having travel insurance. Here's a comparison of the top travel insurance providers and information about "cancel for any reason" add-ons .

Related: The TPG guide to travel insurance for cruises

Don't book a cabin near an elevator

Not every cabin on a ship is created equal. When choosing a room on your first cruise, you might want to stay away from those near elevators and just above nightclubs and other late-night venues. They can sometimes be noisy. Cabins just below the pool deck and near the anchor also can be problematic as well as cabins near casinos.

Related: 8 cabin locations on cruise ships that you definitely should avoid

Use a points card for onboard spending

You saw this one coming, no? Given TPG's origins as a points and miles website , we'd be remiss if we didn't remind you to maximize your credit card points while making purchases on ships. The way to do this is to tie a credit card that offers extra points for travel purchases to your onboard account. This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit). There's also the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on dining.

Don't tip twice for drinks and spa treatments

Most cruise ships now automatically add a gratuity to bar bills, often in the amount of 18% to 20% of the total. Such automatic gratuities are also becoming more common in ship spas. But many first-time cruisers don't know this and write in a hefty tip at the "additional tip" line on bills at cruise ship bars and spas. Be sure to ask if a gratuity has already been included before adding another 15% or 20% to the total. Otherwise, you may end up tipping twice.

Use points to get to your cruise

Using points and miles to pay for a cruise doesn't always make sense , as it often requires a huge number of them to secure a cabin. But that doesn't mean you can't save big time by booking your flights to and from a ship using points and miles .

You'll find plenty of stories here at The Points Guy about how to, say, pay the equivalent of $1,330 in points for a flight that costs $16,000 or book a $27,000 around-the-world trip for just $168 in out-of-pocket costs . Scroll around a little, and you may never pay cash for a flight to a cruise ship again.

21 Cruise Tips That Will Help Make Your Trip Even Better, According to Experts

Get ready for a trip to remember with these helpful cruise tips from industry experts.

Some 30 million people board cruise ships every year to hit the high seas in style. If you’re thinking about becoming one of them, first, congratulations, and second, there are a few things you should know. But not just from us. Here are 21 cruise tips and tricks from insiders to help you have the best sailing of your life .

Related: 11 Luxury Cruise Lines That Offer Stunning Suites, Fine Dining, and Exceptional Itineraries

Understand what’s included and what’s not before you step aboard.

“Make sure you know what's included before you board your cruise, so you're totally clear on what you've paid for in advance and what you haven't. It may make sense to purchase an all-inclusive beverage package ahead of your sailing — which means less to think about once on board and potential savings depending on how much you imbibe. Windstar, for example, books cruises with rates for cruise-only options or at all-inclusive rates with unlimited beer, wine, cocktails, Wi-Fi, and gratuities. Make the decision that fits your circumstances the best when you're booking, and simply enjoy once you're on board.”  — Chris Dodds, captain on the Star Breeze from Windstar Cruises

Get the lay of the land ASAP.

“When you arrive on the ship, take time to explore each deck so that you know exactly where everything is so that you do not lose time or arrive late to an activity because you got lost. Review the schedules to see when you may be able to avoid lines for certain activities on board. If there are games such as bingo, reviewing the schedule also helps to ensure that you have the right amount of cash for the activity." — Dr. Terika Haynes, owner, Dynamite Travel

For the best en-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship.

“Although our ships offer many amazing views, especially in the comfort of your suite, I personally love the decks located on the back of the ship. Not only are they nice and quiet, but they offer wonderful sweeping views of the ocean or port. Often whales, seals, and dolphins can be spotted at the back of the ship, and a must-see for photographers is the amazing sunsets and sunrises you can catch from this area.”

— Kelly Cochrane, executive chef, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

For the best sunsets, head to the observation deck.

“ There are a lot of places you can enjoy the views onboard, but my favorite is the observation deck. Quiet and secluded, the observation deck is a wonderful place for a spectacular view.”

— Allan Ortiz, head sommelier, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

ullstein bild/Getty Images

Explore all your shore excursion options.

"Just because your cruise ship offers a shore excursion doesn't mean you need to book the shore excursion with the cruise. I recommend working instead with an experienced travel advisor for your shore excursions in order to make your experience as immersive, private, and unique as possible."

— Andrea Galvez, director and expedition cruise expert, Craft Travel Group

Don’t overlook night time excursions.

“ Some cities are great for soaking up the sun, while others come to life at night – and some have special experiences to offer at every time of day. Do some research ahead of your voyage to find out what can’t be missed, and take advantage of all the time you have in port, especially during a late night or an overnight.”

— Andrea Baigorria, global head of PR and communications, Azamara

And pay close attention to the listed physical activity levels for excursions.

“Pay attention to the described physical activity levels when booking excursions. Many people don't anticipate (or perhaps don't believe it) when a Windstar excursion is marked as ‘strenuous,’ we actually mean it. Many of our guests are active travelers seeking a workout and will gleefully power up a hill on a mountain bike or paddle for hours. But if you're a traveler who is not seeking physical exertion like that on your outing, stick to the easy, easy to moderate, or moderate levels to ensure maximum enjoyment.” — Chris Dodds

Don’t overpack — take advantage of laundry service instead.

“My best packing tip for long trips at sea is to take advantage of the laundry services onboard. Additionally, I recommend limiting the amount of clothes you bring and packing smart. For example, windbreakers are handy in all climates and comfortable clothes for lounging around the suite and enjoying room service are a must.”

– Kelly Cochrane

And make sure to pack important items in your carry-on luggage.

“A lot of travelers overstuff their checked bags and don't give enough care to what they're carrying in their carry-ons. Keep in mind that it takes at least several hours to deliver your baggage to you. Based on the number of workers onboard and your cabin's position, the time it takes to receive your baggage can range from a few hours to half a day. Due to this, it's imperative to have a day pack that contains everything you'll need right away. Also, don't forget to pack some fun items. Fill a compact carry-on with essentials you'll need quick access to, such as prescribed medicine, contact solution, a set of clothes, swimwear, lotion, sunglasses, and footwear.”

— Sean Harris, managing editor, Family Destinations Guide

Don’t limit your vacation to the sailing dates.

"Be sure to pick destinations that easily allow for extension trips. For instance, if you visit Antarctica, you can easily visit Patagonia in both Argentina and Chile, as their ports also serve as the gateway to Patagonia. Another example is visiting mainland Ecuador in combination with a cruise around the Galapagos Islands. What's more, some cruises include one night at a hotel before embarking. If the cruise doesn't include this, I highly recommend one night at a hotel before embarking to err on the side of caution due to flight delays.”

— Andrea Galvez

Share your special moments with the crew ahead of time.

"A great way to make the most of your time at sea, particularly if you’re going to be celebrating a special occasion, is to mention it in advance to your agent/cruise operator. More often than not, you’ll end up with some freebies to make your day extra special, including in-room treats, complimentary upgrades, private picnics, and onboard chefs who are typically happy to show off their creative talents by making a cake."

— Jeremy Clubb, Founder, Rainforest Cruises

And make sure to get to know the crew, too.

“Get to know your crew members – they are from all over the world, and they’ve been all over the world, so they have some amazing stories to tell. They can clue you into the hidden gems of each destination, such as the best local shopping, restaurants, viewpoints, and more. Some of my favorite moments and discoveries across the globe have come from the recommendation of an Azamara crew member.”

— Carol Cabezas, president, Azamara

Always read the daily itineraries.

“ Keep an eye out for the ever-changing activities and food offerings onboard, especially during sea days. On Azamara, you’ll find these in your Insider delivered to your room daily. You never know when you might find me hosting our guests in one of our restaurants or an incredible local performer out on the pool deck.”

— Ryzsard Gusmann, hotel director on Azamara Quest

Let yourself enjoy a full day at sea.

"My tip to make the most of your time aboard — make sure you have at least one day at sea. Cruises are so destination-focused that travelers often overlook those ‘at sea’ days in the itinerary. But, as the saying goes, getting there is half the fun!”

— Carlos Caicedo, Marketing Manager, Luxury Cruise Connections

John Elk/Getty Images

Tip accordingly.

“You have two options: you can prepay the tips before the cruise and not worry about that. Some people really like to do that, but some people like to tip based on the quality of the service they received. And so, we normally recommend that you tip the crew $20 per person per day, which is divided among all the crew members, and the guides between $10-15 per person per day. Those are tipping guidelines. We like to recommend to guests that they tip when they’re there because really tipping should be a representation of the quality of the service.”

— Fernando Diez, marketing director, Quasar Expeditions ,

Have dietary restrictions? Speak directly to the chef.

“On a special diet, or have a food allergy/sensitivity that can make travel difficult? If you haven't been able to adequately address your needs virtually during the booking or pre-cruise process, ask to speak to the chef once on board to discuss your restrictions or requests. Sometimes just having the conversation in person is enough to put any worries at ease, and it will allow the culinary team every chance possible to make your dining experience the best it can be.”

— Chris Dodds

Book specialty dining as soon as possible.

“Always try to book specialty dining as early as possible. If you wait until you board the ship, the popular restaurants are often sold out or have limited times available. I once waited until the last minute, and the only time available to book the steakhouse was at 5:30 p.m. on embarkation day. That was also the same time the ship was scheduled to sail through the Giudecca Canal in Venice. — Ben Souza, editor, Cruise Fever

Ask about a chef’s table experience.

“If you love immersive culinary experiences, see if your ship has a chef's table. This will likely be a three to four-hour tasting menu with an intimate group of eight to 10 guests led by the chef and sommelier. Only a very small portion of the ship's guests will have the opportunity to take part in these limited events, so book early or inquire with the maître d as soon as you board.” — Lauren Quirk, owner, Travel With Character

Bring a converter just in case.

“Bring a European travel plug adapter.  Most cruise ships are built overseas, and you'll often find that lots of the outlets both in common areas and even some in staterooms are the European-style plugs.  If you're out and about and want to plug your phone in to charge, an adapter might give you access to many more plugs than other guests.” — Jonathan de Araujo, owner, The Vacationeer

You can’t count on onboard Wi-Fi, so make sure to do all your planning prior to departure.

“The Wi-Fi on ships is slow, unreliable, and expensive. When you're home and have unlimited access to Wi-Fi, plan your port days, so you don't waste the limited time you have in port researching things to do. Find out whether you're able to use Uber/Lyft in the port or find the transportation schedule ahead of time. Buy your museum/attraction/tour tickets in advance.” — Alissa Musto, cruise ship entertainer

Traveling with kids? Try connecting rooms.

“If you have a larger family, check out connecting room options. This has worked out really well for our family with children. Usually, one adult and one or two children can be assigned to each room. This setup allows for some more space and a separate space for the kids to nap while all still being connected.”  — Michelle Schomp, founder, Passport Explorers

  • Cruises come in all flavors! Some are family-focused, brimming with activities for kids and teens. Others might lean towards luxury, adventure, small ship , or even educational themes. Do you fancy a night at the opera or a zip-line adventure over the ship’s deck? Your choice!

  • While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, booking either well in advance or at the very last minute can yield some fabulous deals. Think about when you’re flexible and when you’re not.
  • Travel agents can offer insights, deals, and perks you might not find on your own. But if you’re a DIY kind of traveler, going direct can give you more control over your booking.
  • Not all cabins are created equal! Think about proximity to the ship’s amenities, potential for motion sickness, and whether you want that room with a view. Also review our cabins to avoid guide!

FAQs: First Time Cruise Tips

Q1: Is it necessary to book my cruise far in advance? A: While it’s not always necessary, booking in advance can offer you a wider selection of cabin choices, early bird discounts, and enough time to plan excursions and activities. However, last-minute deals can also provide excellent value if you’re flexible with your dates and accommodation.

Q2: Do I need a passport for a cruise? A: Generally, international cruises require a passport. For some closed-loop cruises (ones that start and end in the same U.S. port), a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID might suffice. Always check with your cruise line for specific documentation requirements.

Q3: What’s included in my cruise fare? A: Most cruise fares include accommodation, basic meals, onboard entertainment, and access to many of the ship’s amenities. However, things like specialty dining, shore excursions, spa treatments, and alcoholic beverages usually cost extra.

Q4: Can I get seasick on a cruise? A: It’s possible, but modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers to minimize motion. If you’re prone to motion sickness, book a cabin in the middle of the ship and on a lower deck, and consider over-the-counter remedies or consult your doctor before sailing.

Q5: How do I stay connected while on the cruise? A: Many ships offer Wi-Fi packages (often at an additional cost). However, the connection can be slower than what you’re used to on land. Alternatively, some people opt to disconnect entirely or use port days to catch up online at local cafes or hotspots.

Q6: Is there a dress code on cruises? A: While daytime attire is generally casual, evenings may have different dress codes ranging from casual to formal, especially in dining rooms. Some cruises host formal nights where elegant attire is encouraged. Always check your cruise itinerary and guidelines.

Q7: Can I bring alcohol onboard? A: Cruise lines vary in their alcohol policies. Some allow you to bring a limited amount of wine or champagne, while others might charge a corkage fee. It’s essential to check your specific cruise line’s policy beforehand.

Q8: What happens if I miss the ship at a port? A: If you’re not on a cruise-sponsored excursion and miss the ship, you’ll be responsible for catching up with the ship at the next port, including all costs involved. If you’re on a cruise-organized trip, the ship will typically wait or make arrangements for you.

Q9: Are cruises suitable for families with kids? A: Absolutely! Many cruise lines offer family-friendly amenities, activities, and dedicated kids’ and teens’ clubs. Always research the specific ship and cruise line to ensure they cater to families if traveling with children.

Q10: How do I handle tipping on a cruise? A: Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare, while others automatically add it to your onboard account. You can also give additional tips for exceptional service. It’s a good idea to check the cruise line’s tipping policy before sailing.

Q11: Are there medical facilities on the cruise? A: Yes, most cruise ships have a medical facility and trained medical staff onboard to handle minor illnesses or injuries. However, for severe cases, they may require a medical evacuation. Consider getting travel insurance that covers medical emergencies.

Q12: Can I do laundry on the ship? A: Many ships have self-service laundromats and offer laundry and dry-cleaning services for a fee. Some luxury suites may even include complimentary laundry services.

Q13: What kind of entertainment can I expect onboard? A: Cruises typically offer a wide range of entertainment options including live music, Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, dance performances, movie screenings, and themed parties. Many also have casinos, trivia games, and guest lecturers. Your daily itinerary will list all the day’s events.

Q14: Are there fitness facilities on the cruise? A: Yes, most modern cruise ships come equipped with fitness centers that include gym equipment, weights, and exercise classes. Some ships also have jogging tracks, basketball courts, and pools suitable for lap swimming.

Q15: Can I customize my dining options? A: Absolutely! Most cruises offer a main dining room, specialty restaurants, and buffet options. You can usually select between assigned seating times or opt for more flexible dining times. Make sure to communicate any dietary restrictions or special requests in advance.

Q16: Is smoking allowed on the ship? A: Smoking policies vary by cruise line. Most ships designate specific smoking areas and prohibit smoking in cabins and on balconies. Always check the specific guidelines for your ship.

Q17: What if I have special needs or require accessibility accommodations? A: Many cruise lines cater to passengers with special needs, offering accessible cabins, wheelchair assistance, and other accommodations. It’s essential to notify the cruise line of any requirements well in advance to ensure your needs are met.

Q18: Do I need to bring cash onboard? A: While onboard expenses are typically charged to your room account, it’s wise to bring some cash for tipping individual service providers, small onboard purchases, and expenses at port destinations.

Q19: How safe are cruises? A: Cruises prioritize passenger safety. Ships are equipped with lifeboats, life vests, and undergo regular safety drills. Additionally, they have security personnel and surveillance. However, just like anywhere else, always be aware of your surroundings and personal belongings.

Q20: Can I choose who I sit with at dinner? A: On many cruises with assigned seating, you’ll be placed at a table with other guests. If you have preferences, you can request specific seating arrangements or tablemates in advance. Alternatively, many modern ships offer flexible dining options without assigned seating.

Q21: Is there a limit to how much luggage I can bring? A: While there isn’t typically a strict luggage limit, cabin space is limited. It’s a good idea to pack efficiently and check your cruise line’s guidelines. Some also have restrictions on the number and size of carry-on items.

Q22: Are there age restrictions for booking a cruise? A: Some cruise lines require passengers under a certain age (often 21 or 25) to be accompanied by an older traveler. Many also have age restrictions for activities onboard, such as casinos or certain entertainment venues.

Q23: Can I bring snacks or drinks onboard? A: Policies vary. Some cruise lines allow you to bring a limited amount of snacks or non-alcoholic beverages, while others might have stricter rules. Always check your specific cruise’s guidelines.

Q24: Do I need travel insurance for a cruise? A: While not always mandatory, travel insurance is highly recommended. It can cover unforeseen events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost luggage.

  • Find a Cruise

Whether you’re planning your maiden voyage or have already sailed the seven seas, you can always get more out of your cruise with some smart advance planning. Here are some cruise tips and tricks for everybody from first-time cruisers to experts.

1: Make Creative Stateroom Choices

Butler serving family inside Suite

Celebrity Cruises Suite

If you’re traveling as a multigenerational group, be creative with the configuration of your accommodation. For example, parents and grandparents would appreciate a private veranda, while kids could have an inside stateroom across the corridor. Consider interconnecting rooms—there are plenty on Celebrity’s ships—or The Retreat , where your family of four could enjoy the comfort and space of a two-bedroom suite.

Take a look at The Retreat if you’re a couple, too, as the extra amenities in this blissful sanctuary make a romantic vacation that much better, from premium beverages to an exclusive restaurant, Luminae , and a serene, private lounge and deck.

2: Pack Smart

Luggage bag with clothes

Experienced cruisers have all sorts of cruise tips and tricks for packing , some more unexpected than others. For example, magnets will attach loose pieces of paper, like excursion tickets and party invitations, to your cabin wall. Colorful towel clips will stop your beach towel from flying off your lounger on a breezy day. Compression cubes are perfect for squeezing more into your luggage, while hanging washbags mean you can store toiletries vertically, rather than cluttering the bathroom.

Invest in a travel pill organizer for any meds to avoid packing endless bottles, and a jewelry roll to keep everything together. A USB octopus means you can charge multiple devices from one USB socket, although power extension strips are not allowed. A thermal water flask will keep your drinking water cool all day and is more environmentally sound, as you won’t be discarding half-full plastic bottles once they warm up.

A tote bag is perfect for the beach (if you’ve chosen The Retreat, you’ll find a very chic complimentary one waiting in your suite). If you’re planning kayaking trips or are headed to the Galapagos , where you’ll be zooming around on Zodiacs, a roll-top wet bag keeps valuables dry.

Finally, pack everything you need for the first afternoon of embarkation day in your carry-on, not least swimwear, a cover-up, and sunblock, so you don’t have to wait for your suitcases to be delivered to your stateroom.

3: Arrive a Day Early

Venice, Italy

If you’re traveling long distance, why not add on a night in a hotel before joining the ship? You’ll be able to enjoy a little local culture on your first night—for example, a stroll through Venice , or fresh seafood in Athens with a view of the floodlit Acropolis—and sleep off some jetlag. You’ll arrive at the port fresh and ready for an adventure at sea.

4: Get to Know the Ship

Family checking out Camp at Sea on Celebrity

Camp at Sea

Part of the fun of the first day is exploring your new home, and a wise cruise tip from experienced sailors is to take a self-guided ship tour. This way, you’ll figure out where you want to sunbathe, eat, and relax, find classes you like the look of, and see the array of activities on offer in Camp at Sea.

You’ll be given a map of the ship, or can use your Celebrity app to explore. Start on the highest possible deck and work your way methodically down. You’ll be amazed at how much you learn—which restaurants beckon, the enticing treatments on offer in the aromatic haven of the spa, the best spot from which to enjoy the thrill of sailaway on your first evening.

If you’re traveling as a family with young children, knowing the shortest routes around the ship is always a good idea, as you’ll inevitably be dashing back to your stateroom every now and then for forgotten items.

5: Budget for Beverages

People hanging out over drinks on a cruise

Depending on your habits, investing in a beverage package can be one of the best cruise tips to follow. It’s easy on the carefree, sunny days of vacation to enjoy a couple of glasses of wine with lunch, a sundowner as you set sail, more wine with your evening meal, and then some cocktails in the nightclub.

It’s not all about booze; other beverage packages offer non-alcoholic drinks, some cater to kids, and others include just soda or mineral water.

6: Match Your Tech To Your Itinerary

Photographer with camera while on an Alaska whale watching cruise excursion

There’s no need to bring an entire mobile office, but think about what you might need at the destinations you’re visiting on your cruise itinerary . In Alaska, binoculars are essential for wildlife spotting, as is a camera with a zoom lens. An essential cruise tip here is to bring a spare battery, as nobody wants a dead camera just as that pod of orcas appears.

You can’t fly a drone from a ship—but some of the tiniest models, for which you don’t need a license, are appropriate for catching those ‘wow’ aerial shots of, say, the Stockholm archipelago, or the dazzling gold and turquoise sweep of a Caribbean beach. Always check, though, whether your mini-drone is legal.

Couple snorkeling with GoPro camera

If you’re sailing somewhere tropical and are likely to be snorkeling or diving, consider a GoPro or a waterproof case for your smartphone for underwater shots. For long city tours involving a lot of walking, a heavy camera can be a burden, but a smartphone is perfect for street shots and video.

7: Use the Celebrity Cruises App

Celebrity Cruises mobile app

Celebrity Cruises app

If you haven’t tried the Celebrity Cruises app on previous cruises, now’s the time. On a practical basis, the app makes boarding swifter and allows you to snap up dining and excursion reservations. But it’s fun, too. The in-app calendar is a fantastic tool for scheduling your day, rather than scribbling on the printed daily program.

The chat function is the perfect way to keep track of friends and family on board. You can manage your expenses, too. You can even use your smartphone to open your cabin door or control the lights and shades from your bed.

8: Try a Capsule Wardrobe

Couple taking a selfie in St Petersburg

St. Petersburg, Russia

If you prefer to travel light, a good cruise tip is to plan a wardrobe that works hard. Each item needs to match other items, so keep the color palette minimalist. One pair of pants, for example, can be paired with any number of floaty tops, or with sneakers by day and strappy sandals by night.

One relatively simple summer dress can be accessorized with statement jewelry, scarves, and different shoes, and worn by day after it’s made an appearance for dinner. Lightweight travelers suggest just three pairs of shoes: one pair for walking, flip flops for the ship, and something more dressy for evening.

The dress code on Celebrity Cruises’ ships is smart casual throughout, with a couple of Evening Chic evenings per cruise. You don’t need a ball gown or tuxedo for these—although some cruisers nonetheless love stepping out in full sparkle. The reality, though, is that everybody is having too much of a good time to judge what you’re wearing every day.

9: Skip the Travel-sized Toiletries

Small bottles are generally environmentally unsound, so buy a set of reusable travel-sized bottles and decant your favorite products before leaving home if you like to travel with a particular brand. Shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, and soap bars are provided, in any case.

If you are bringing big bottles, like sunblock, double wrap them in plastic. Nobody wants to open their suitcase to a gooey mess. Aromatherapy oils, too, have a habit of leaking, and while tea tree is great for insect bites, and lavender for sleep and soothing sunburn, wrap them tightly unless you want to wander around the ship smelling like an intense herbal aroma.

10: Make Breakfast an Occasion

Plate of Eggs Benedict with juice

While the choices in the Oceanview Cafe are undeniably mouth-watering, mix it up a little, especially if you have kids in tow and you’re eating at peak time, when everybody is getting ready to go on tour. Change out the bustle of the cafe for a more serene experience in the main restaurant, where you’ll enjoy table service, made-to-order omelettes, and delicious specials like eggs Benedict or pancakes with maple syrup.

11: Plan Specialty Dining

People hanging out at the Lawn Club Grill

Lawn Club Grill

You’ll probably be booking several of the specialty restaurants on board, so plan your time wisely. If you’re ashore all day on a long excursion, you’ll most likely be tired, so this might be the night for a quiet dinner in the main dining room.

If there’s a sunset sailaway from somewhere exceptionally beautiful, like Santorini, for example, make that the day you dine at the Lawn Club Grill or the Rooftop Garden Grill on Edge or Apex. If you only choose one specialty experience and you’re cruising with kids, go for Le Petit Chef, a spectacular animation experience that thrills and entertains all ages.

People eating dinner in Murano

Booking spa treatments early evening, when there’s usually more availability, is tempting, but don’t leave it too late on big evenings like the cocktail hour. On the other hand, on a sailing day, especially if there’s an Evening Chic dress code, soak up some sun, dress up to the nines, and make this your night in Murano, where an elegant outfit matches the beautiful setting.

12: Take Time Out

Woman relaxing at the spa on Celebrity

If you’re a seasoned cruiser and are perhaps revisiting old haunts in Europe , why not take a day off? This is particularly rewarding—and feels slightly decadent—in the heat of the Mediterranean summer, but with so much sightseeing on offer, exhaustion is a real issue. So book a spa treatment for a port day when there are usually special offers, or occupy prime position by the pool, enjoying the sensation of having the ship to yourself, like a luxurious private yacht.

If you do venture ashore, do as the locals do. Sit for hours in a beautiful square with morning coffee and head back on board for a siesta. If your ship has a late sail, take a stroll in port at sunset and stop for aperitivos, followed by a late dinner on board.

13: Document Your Voyage

Man taking a photo in Russia

Most of us take photographs and videos, but thinking of other ways you could document your vacation is one of the best cruise tips to help you remember your vacation. You could pack a sketch pad and pencils and give drawing a try—nobody will judge if you can only manage a stick figure. Try creative writing; sit in some gorgeous waterfront café, or on deck at sunset, and describe what you see. Or try a video app and get creative with micro-movies.

You could even try a sound diary, recording snippets of sound on your phone as a memory—the chatter of dolphins, the cry of a bird, the clackety-clack of a train, the bustle of a restaurant. Ask the whole family for their best shots at the end of the trip and create a photo book. Or collect ticket stubs and other scraps—more of a challenge in the digital age—for a good, old-fashioned vacation scrapbook.

14: Keep the Family Happy

Family hanging out by the pool on a cruise

One of the joys of cruising in a multigenerational group is that there’s enough variety on board for everybody. A ship is the perfect environment in which families can scatter, do their own thing, and meet up at an agreed time and place to enjoy quality time together.

For example, your teens might want to visit the Teen Club, while grandparents may head out on a tour while you work out in the gym or relax in the privacy of your veranda. Maybe agree to meet for lunch, or take a couple of fantastic family-friendly excursions . There’s no pressure to do everything as a group, though, and the joy of a cruise ship is that it’s safe for all ages.

15: Make Exercise Fun

People doing yoga on a cruise

Celebrity yoga class

If you exercise regularly at home, there’s every possibility on a Celebrity Cruises ship to keep up your routine with some exciting classes. On Edge-series ships, join a high-energy, live-streamed class on the Peloton bikes. Get the whole family signed up for a salsa class, or simply inhale the sea air on an early morning power walk. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Wear an activity tracker and see if you can hit 10,000 steps a day—it’s really not difficult on a ship.

16: Manage Your Time Ashore

Couple wandering around Iguazu Falls

Iguazu Falls, Buenos Aires

There are some ports that invite wandering. Mykonos Town and Barcelona , for example, are easy to navigate. Venice is a place to lose yourself among the tranquil canals and alleyways, while Juneau in Alaska is a joy to wander at your own pace or try the friendly public bus service to reach the Mendenhall Glacier.

On the other hand, from Naples , you’ll want to visit the excavations at Pompeii, which is infinitely better with a guide. A tour is a reassuring and more effective way to navigate the teeming chaos of Bangkok. South American ports are trickier if you don’t speak Spanish, and cities like Buenos Aires and Santiago are, in any case, sprawling.

However you spend your day, though, be back on time! Unless you’re on an official excursion, the ship won’t wait.

17: Reinvent Yourself

People hanging out at Martini Bar on Celebrity

Martini Bar

Cruising is undeniably exciting and romantic, so let go of your everyday stresses and rediscover the real you. Nobody here knows you, so you can be whoever you like. This is the time for sartorial expression, so let your fashion imagination run wild. At home, you may not sit at a glamorous cocktail bar, sipping a martini and wearing a sparkly dress, or a suave summer tuxedo, but in the elegant setting of a Celebrity Cruises ship, why not?

Push your boundaries, however gently. Boost your adrenaline with a new activity, like zip-lining or a high-speed RIB tour. Stay up insanely late, dancing. Try karaoke. Or get up early, head up on deck, and watch the sunrise. You can always snooze during the day.

Join a class on board and learn a new skill. Meet new people and let them see the you that isn’t encumbered by school runs and office commutes. You may surprise yourself.

Table of Contents

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Check-in, arrival, and boarding

  • O nline check-in is open to first-time guests 75 days prior to your sail date.
  • When doing online check-in, select the earliest possible port arrival time. An earlier port arrival time will yield an earlier boarding group number when it comes time to board the ship.
  • You may arrive at the cruise terminal early despite your designated port arrival time.
  • Boarding group numbers (the order in which you get to go on the ship) are not assigned until you check-in at the cruise terminal.
  • Boarding typically begins at 12:00 PM noon.
  • Despite your extensive Disney Cruise planning and preparation , you will still be overwhelmed (with excitement!) when first getting onto the ship.
  • There is no one directing you where to go or what to do first once stepping foot onto the ship. My recommendation is to print off a map of the Fantasy ahead of time. Then, make your way to the lunch buffet at Cabanas restaurant immediately upon boarding.

Disney Fantasy Cruise tips: Sailing away

  • In cruise terminology, “Forward” is the forward part of the ship, and “Aft” refers to the back of the ship.
  • In cruise terminology, “Port” is the left side of the ship as you face forward. “Starboard” is the right side of the ship as you face forward.
  • Your Disney cruise stateroom will not be ready for you to use until around 1:30 PM. You will be informed via a general overhead announcement. This means having to make your way around the ship with your carry-on items and continue wearing the clothes that you came in until allowed into your stateroom.
  • For this reason, pack swimsuits and sunscreen if you hope to lounge around outside on the pool deck until your stateroom is ready.
  • Disney Cruise staff will be walking around before you are allowed into your stateroom selling water bottle and drink packages (beer and wine) that will then be delivered to your room.
  • For the best view, watch the Sailing Away party that is held on the main pool deck from the deck above the party. Deck 10 on the Magic and Wonder, Deck 12 on the Dream and Fantasy.
  • Disney Cruise staff walk around handing out drinks during the Sailing Away Party but take note, they are not free. We found the drink packages unnecessary when considering the carry-on alcohol policy .

Top US Travel Blog features Disney Cruise Advice: Disney Cruise-door magnets

Disney Fantasy Cruise tips: Your stateroom

  • There is plenty of storage space once inside your stateroom. Dresser drawers are deep, the beds are high enough to fit/store a suitcase underneath, and the ottoman top comes off and has storage inside.
  • No need to worry about assembling additional sleeping space each night. Turn down service is performed every evening and your beds will be all ready for you upon returning to your stateroom each night.
  • The porthole windows in the Oceanview staterooms are HUGE, provide excellent views, and let in lots of sunlight (the window sill is actually a bench that 2 small children can sit in). Do not shy away from these rooms if you don’t want to pay the price upgrade for a stateroom with a verandah.
  • On the Dream and Fantasy, your cabin light switch is activated by your Key to the World Card. You can also place a library card or other card in it for convenience.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Getting around

  • Most people tend to use the large, main stairways instead of the elevators to travel between floors on the ship.
  • Even though the ship is huge, you will get a general feel for the layout once you’ve been on it for 2-3 days. I would not let kids roam alone however, for it can be confusing how to get to and from places.
  • Make your own or purchase personalized door magnets from an Etsy shop to put on the outside of your stateroom door. Most people do so and you will regret not doing it if you don’t. This also helps children recognize your stateroom door among the thousands of other look-alike doors.
  • We did not participate in the ‘fish extender’ tradition and didn’t feel that we missed out, or wish that we had.

Disney Cruise-Goofy at breakfast

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Dining

  • Main Dining reservations begin at 5:45 PM with evening showtime starting at 8:30 PM. Second Seating dining begins at 8:15 PM with even showtime starting beforehand at 6:15 PM. (Double-check exact time per your itinerary.)
  • You may make requests for your dining time preferences through a Disney reservation agent, as well as again when you check-in at the cruise terminal.
  • Your Key to the World Card is coded with your reservation information and table number, as well as has an acronym on the front that depicts the order of the restaurants that you have been assigned to visit i.e. AERA (Animator’s Palate, Enchanted Garden, Royal Table, Animator’s Palate).
  • You can also speak with a Disney reservation agent to request which restaurants you’d like to repeat eating at during longer itineraries.
  • Many little girls dress up as princesses for dinner.
  • The non-alcoholic drink that you order for dinner the first night of your cruise will be automatically waiting for you at your table upon arrival to a restaurant on consecutive evenings. i.e. If your child orders lemonade on the first night, a lemonade will already be on the table for them upon arrival to evening dining the next night.
  • Disney Cruise Line serves Coke products.
  • Soda is free 24-hours a day at the soda stations on the pool deck.
  • Room service is quick and Mickey Ice Cream bars are the most popular item to order. We ordered them every night before bed.
  • Remy and Palo are great ‘date night’ options but do know that the food costs are extra and are not included in the Disney cruise fare .

Top U.S. family travel blog, Travel With A Plan, shares their top 50 Disney Fantasy cruise tips!

Movies, Shows, and Celebrations

  • The evening shows are as amazing as everyone says. Do not miss one despite being tired at the end of the day. In my opinion, the evening shows are just as good, if not better, than versus Disney World !
  • Watching a movie in the Buena Vista Theater is a great way to take a break during a hot and sunny day.
  • The popcorn and snacks available outside of the movie theater are very tempting but do cost extra money (and are spendy!).
  • You can bring food from elsewhere on the ship (pizza, chicken strips, snacks, etc.) into the theater.
  • Every cruise has a pirate night and most people dress-up. A red pirate bandana is placed in your stateroom for each member of your party. If you don’t have a costume, wear the bandana somehow (hair tie, necktie, on your head, etc).
  • Kids love the self-guided Midship Detective Agency game that is available on the Disney Dream and Fantasy. There are two locations where you can start the game at a Detective Agency booth; Deck 2 near Enchanted Garden, and Deck 5 near “It’s a small world” nursery.
  • Make note of when the evening Captain’s Reception is and be sure to attend. Kids can attend too. (Adults are given a free alcoholic drink.)
  • Do not miss pre-booking a Disney Character VIP Breakfast during online check-in. Though it costs extra, it is well worth it! Kids can take photos with all of the Disney characters.
  • On the day of departure, be sure to attend the See Ya Real Soon Farwell party . It is awesome! (Strange how not many people attend, probably because they’re busy getting packed up.)

Castaway Cay on Disney private island.

Activities and Excursions

  • The pools on the cruise ship are not big and are mostly shallow. They are more like ‘wading pools’.
  • Long waits accumulate for the Aquaduck waterslide . Get in line 10-15 minutes before it opens each morning for little to no wait.
  • On port days, many announcements regarding shore excursions, etc. will be read via an overhead speaker system. Listen carefully as valuable information is shared, as well as when guests are required to return to the ship.
  • As you get off of the ship to spend the day on Castaway Cay (pronounced ‘key’), there will be beach towels to grab as you get off of the ship.
  • Purchase the Castaway Cay Getaway Package . It is well worth it. We found the bikes to be the best as there are family-friendly biking trails that take you around the entire island.

Disney Fantasy Cruise Tips: Departure

  • You have to place your suitcase out in the hallway the night before you get off of the ship. MAKE SURE you save out clothes to wear the next day as well as all of your carry-on and necessity items.
  • Bring a spare emergency credit card in case your company freezes yours (if seeing international charges).
  • Settle your on-board account the evening before departure. The line for doing so on the morning of departure gets very long.

Disney Fantasy Fun Facts

The Disney Fantasy sails out of Port Canaveral, Florida on popular seven-night Caribbean itineraries. The itineraries alternate between the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

All of the Disney Fantasy cruise itineraries include a stop at Disney’s private island in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay.

  • The Disney Fantasy first sailed in 2012.
  • It was the 4th ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet after the Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, and Disney Dream.
  • The Disney Fantasy is 1,115 feet long and 125 feet wide.
  • It has 1,250 staterooms.
  • The Disney Fantasy can accommodate up to 4,000 guests.
  • Each Disney Fantasy sailing involves over 1,450 cast and crew members.
  • There are a total of 12 restaurants on the Disney Fantasy, 3 of which provide rotational themed-dining for dinner.
  • The Disney Fantasy also features 24-hour room service that is included in your Disney Cruise fare !
  • The iconic Disney Fantasy Aquaduck waterslide is 765 feet long. It has a translucent loop that swings you our 13 feet over the side of the ship.

Cost of a Disney Fantasy Cruise

Being a premium cruise line, Disney Cruise Line prices are higher than most mainstream cruises.

This is because the price is more all-inclusive of many on-board foods, amenities, and activities than what other cruise lines offer.

It is important to understand what is included in your Disney Cruise fare   in order to understand the charges and to comfortably budget for the final price.

If you have a party of 5 you really need to consider if one stateroom or two will be the better deal.

Disney cruises are one of the very few cruise lines which have staterooms that accommodate up to 5 guests.

disneycruiseverandahstateroom

However, these Disney cruise staterooms are very popular and tend to be pricey.

You should consider if 2 staterooms would be the better deal.

If you have young children you might want to think about choosing connecting staterooms on your Disney Cruise.

There are plenty of options available, particularly on the newer Disney Dream and Fantasy ships and of course the Disney Wish .

5. Book A Disney Cruise Onboard

This is one of the best Disney cruise tips to save money.

It will work once you are sailing on your first and any future Disney cruises.

The best deal is to book when you are onboard.

disneycruiseplaceholder

You will receive a 10% discount on the current brochure prices.

Unfortunately, a placeholder no longer offers any onboard credit.

Don’t know which Disney cruise you want to sail on next?

You can book what is called a Disney Cruise Place Holder and decide at a later date which one you want to sail on.

You have two years to sail on a Disney cruise from the date you booked your placeholder.

6. Look Out For Special Disney Cruise Sailings

Love Pixar movies? You will want to check out the Pixar Days at Sea.

Other themed cruises include Marvel Days at Sea and of course the Halloween on the High Seas , Christmas, and New Year Cruises.

7. It’s All Included on a Disney Cruise

Once you are onboard almost everything is included.

Your accommodation, food, and entertainment are all included in the price that you have paid to sail.

disneycruiseincluded

Yes, you can pay extra for things on board, but you don’t have to.

Here is our guide to What is Included on a Disney Cruise and What You Pay Extra For

8. Disney Cruise Gratuities Explained

Gratuities for your dining servers and stateroom host will be automatically added to your onboard account.

However, you can adjust them however, you want.

Service onboard a Disney cruise is excellent.

Guests do get confused about Disney Cruise tips and how to pay, but it’s really very easy.

Here is a Guide to Tipping on a Disney Cruise to help you know what to expect.

Check-In For Your Disney Cruise Online

disneysandiego

Remember to check in online for your cruise as soon as you can.

9. Use Your Disney Cruise Personalizer

disneycruisemilitarydiscounts

Once you have completed your Disney Cruise online check-in you will have access to booking onboard events and cruise excursions on the Disney Cruise Personalizer.

The  time that you can check in depends upon whether you have cruised with Disney before, and if so, what level of Castaway Club member you are.

This can be anything between 75 and 123 days before your cruise.

Platinum members and Concierge guests get priority so you may find that some things are booked before you get the chance.

A classic illustration of this is the Cabanas on Castaway Cay .

There are limited numbers and are usually snagged by Concierge and Pearl guests at one minute past midnight on the day online check-in opens for them.

Castaway Cay Cabanas are the hottest ticket on a Disney cruise and are very difficult to get unless you are a Concierge or Pearl Castaway Cay guest.

10. You Must Prepare for Embarkation Before You Sail

letthemagicbegindessertmenu

Things have changed quite a bit since Covid – but Disney makes things as easy and as safe as possible for all Guests.

Disney Cruise Line DOES NOT Guests to be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19.

DCL does continue to strongly recommend that guests are vaccinated and that they test before embarking on a cruise ship.

Requirements can change so the best place to go for this information is always:

Disney Cruise Line Know Before You Go

11. Book Tickets Online for Character Greetings

disneycruisecharactergreeting

Most character greetings are just announced every day in your Personal Navigator and you get in line to see your favorites.

The Disney Princess Gathering is a separately ticketed event and you must have this to attend the meet and greet.

If you want to see your favorites your best chance is to get tickets online in the Cruise Personalizer.

If you don’t get them online go straight to Guest Services when you board to see if there are any still available.

Note that right now the Anna and Elsa Frozen Meet and Greet is not scheduled on any of the Disney Ships.

12. Book Special Dining Online

disneycruisedining

If you want to book one of the adult dining experiences you can book one experience in each restaurant online.

If you book for the first night at Remy or Palo you can now also book a second night online. Remy, in particular, gets booked up so always try and book in advance.

If there is nothing available, you can still try and book as soon as you get on your cruise.

The Navigator will tell you where the restaurant Cast Members are on the ship to help you make a reservation.

Wine tastings and other special events are now offered online as well. Make sure that you log into your Disney Cruise Personalizer as soon as you can so that you can book the events that you want.

Remember though that there are usually spaces still available on the ship.

So visit Guest Services as soon as you get on board.

13. Sign Up The Young Ones for The Kid’s Clubs

disneycruisebalconies

See that long line at the cruise port over in the corner? That is for the grown-ups who did not sign up their children online for the kid’s clubs.

You can save a lot of time waiting in line if you just fill out the simple form online.

Then you can skip the lines and go straight to the place where they will be given their wristbands.

Disney Cruise Ship Kids Clubs – What to Expect

14. Book Port Adventures in Advance

disneycruisecabo

You will be visiting some amazing ports so you will want to think about which Disney Port Adventures you want to book.

Your online Cruise Personalizer has details of them all. You can book before you sail.

We always suggest that you book excursions via Disney. You can book independently and you will probably save money.

However, if you book with Disney you can be sure that they have the Disney seal of approval. Most importantly if you are late back from a Disney Port Adventure the ship will wait for you.

If you go independently you could be waving goodbye to your floating home from the dock.

We have seen it happen.

Don’t let it be you.

D ISNEY CRUISE PACKING TIPS

15. disney cruise packing 101.

One of the great things about a cruise is that you are not restricted to how much luggage you can take on board.

If you are driving to the cruise port this makes things easy.

Take as much as you want!

However, if you are arriving by plane you will still have to navigate their increasingly ungenerous baggage allowances.

disney cruise save money

Things to Take on a Cruise: 50 Must-Have Items to Pack

16. Pack a Carry On

Your luggage will arrive in your Disney cruise stateroom sometime in the afternoon and early evening.

If there is anything that you need as soon as you board, make sure that you have packed it in a carry-on bag.

This should definitely include your cruise and identification documents, and any medication that you need.

I also tend to pack swimsuits.

It is also a great time to experience the Aqua Duck if you are on the Disney Fantasy or Dream. Or the AquaMouse on the Wish.

17. Prepare For the Unexpected

disneycruisesandiego

No one wants to talk about this subject, but here we go.

Seasickness.

It happens.

The Disney cruise ships are very stable, but sometimes you may not find it possible to get your sea legs.

We have sailed in very challenging seas but never encountered a problem.

However, just in case you will find our guide How Not To Get Sick on a Disney Cruise useful.

18. Tell Your Credit Card Company Your Plans

Unfortunately, credit card fraud is very common these days. So your credit card company will pick up on any unusual activity.

They can and often will stop your card if they detect anything strange.

My card was canceled when I tried to charge $10 in Grand Cayman!

Fortunately, I had a backup card.

For more details check out Things Not To Forget on Your Disney Cruise

19. Arriving at the Port

disneycruiseembarkation

If you are sailing from Port Canaveral here is a guide to getting to the Port from Orlando International Airport.

20. Arrive the Day Before Your Cruise

Sometimes flights are delayed. We strongly recommend that if you possibly can, make sure you arrive at least within easy driving distance to the port the day before.

There are plenty of hotels at each Disney cruise port including Port Canaveral.

If you ignore most of the rest of this article just listen to this Disney Cruise Tip as it is one that can make a huge difference.

Don’t leave things to chance and be stressed about making it on time to your cruise.

Nothing could be worse than not making it on time and watching the ship sail away into the sunset without you.

21. Get a Call from Mickey or Minnie

This is another great feature of your Cruise Personalizer. You can schedule a call with Mickey or Minnie! You can schedule the date, and time and choose if you want Minnie or Mickey.

It’s another way Disney cruise lines make things that bit extra special.

22. Download the Disney Cruise Navigator App

You can do this any time you want, but make sure you do it before you get on board.

On the cruise ship, it shows you what is happening every day.

Before you cruise it gives you a countdown of how many more days, hours and minutes there are before you board!

The Navigator App also lets you send texts free of charge to members of your stateroom and anyone else who authorizes you to do this.

This is so much better than the Wave Phones you get in each stateroom. Make sure that all family members get the App before they board.

If you have an iPhone then iMessage works on the ship.

23. There May Be a Disney Cruise Stateroom Upgrade

disneycruisestateroom

Want to upgrade your Disney cruise stateroom? You can always ask at check-in if there are any upgrades available.

Sometimes, but not always, you can get an upgrade at a reduced cost. It always pays to ask just in case! You can then decide if the upgrade you are offered is worth the extra cost.

Never rely on a Disney Cruise upgrade though.

They are increasingly unlikely as Disney cruise ships are so popular and are often fully booked.

24. It’s A Key To The World

When you check in you will be given your stateroom key which is your Key To The World Card.

This allows you to charge all expenses to your room key.

You can limit the charging privileges of others in your stateroom.

You don’t have to give your 8-year-old the power to buy what he wants in the store!

B OARDING THE DISNEY SHIP

disneycruiseboarding

Finally, the time has come to get on the Disney ship.

All that anticipation and preparation.

Now the day has arrived!

27 Do’s and Don’ts For Your First Day On A Disney Cruise Ship

25. Wait For Your Boarding Number

When you check in at the terminal you will be given a card with a boarding number for your party.

Don’t ever think that you can board earlier than your group. You will be stopped!

26. Stop for A Photo

disneycruisecharacters

There are always photographers stationed along the gangway to take your embarkation photo.

Stop if you want or pass it by if you really can’t wait the extra few minutes to board!

We recommend you are not camera shy.

There are many photo opportunities on the ship, but the embarkation photo is one of our favorites.

Here is a Complete Guide to Disney Cruise Photo Packages.

27. Give The Disney Cast Members Your Name

disneywonderrestaurant

When you board the Disney Ship you will be asked for your family name.

Make sure that you give it to them as you have a special surprise welcome!

28. Go To Disney Cruise Guest Services

If you need to book any specially ticketed events, such as Beverage Tastings.

You may still be able to pick up tickets.

29. Start Eating!

disneywondericecream

The food offerings start as soon as you board. You can head up to the pool deck to experience the buffet.

If you want a slightly less crowded space one of the restaurants will also offer a buffet selection or waiter service option.

It won’t be as huge a choice as the pool deck, but fewer people head here so you may get a more relaxing start to the cruise.

Guide to Disney Cruise Food

30. Make Sure You Do the Drill

Muster drills have changed a lot in recent times.

But you still have to comply with the instructions and attend your muster station. This is about safety and it is important.

Don’t be late for your drill. It inconveniences a lot of other guests and Cast Members.

31. Put Your Phone in Airplane Mode

One of the most expensive mistakes that you can make on any cruise is not checking your cell phone coverage.

You can end up with a very hefty bill if you use your cell phone onboard. This applies to calls, text, and data.

You could just put your phone in your room safe and not connect.

However, if you want to use the Navigator App we suggest that you simply put your phone into airplane mode.

32. Take Advantage of Free Wi-Fi

disneywondertowelanimal

If you use your own cell phone provider data provision you will be paying a fortune.

All the Disney ships, except the Wonder, have new internet packages. The Disney Wonder will get the upgrade in October 2023.

Here is a Guide to Disney Cruise Internet Packages.

33. Enjoy the Sail Away Party

Disney knows how to put on a show and the Sail Away Party is no exception. Head on out to the pool deck for a very high-energy party.

You can also watch the port disappear into the distance by going up onto the deck above the pool deck.

Or if you have a balcony stateroom why not enjoy the Drink of the Day in your own private haven?

34. Take a Tour of the Spa

Disneycruisesensesspa

This is a great opportunity to see the Disney Rainforest and the Spa treatment rooms to plan what you would like to do in the spa.

There is always a free-to-enter spa raffle on the first day.

You may as well enter as you may win a free spa treatment or a discount.

D ISNEY CRUISE STATEROOMS

howtochooseadisneycruisesteroom

35. Not All Disney Cruise Staterooms are Created Equal

Disney cruise lines have some of the largest and the best staterooms in the industry. Your choices range from an inside stateroom right up to the magnificent Walt Disney Suite.

Your choice mostly depends upon your budget, but even within the same category, there are some staterooms that are a better choice than others.

Here is our video which shows the smallest of the Disney cruise staterooms which is a Standard Inside Stateroom.

This is the only stateroom category that does not have a split bath.

Read our Disney Cruise Staterooms to Avoid to help you decide.

36. Disney Cruise Staterooms Have Split Bathrooms

disneywondersplitbathroom

Another unique thing about Disney cruises is the “split bathroom” concept. This is ideal for families.

What does it mean? There are 2 bathroom spaces in most of the Disney cruise staterooms.

One has a toilet and a sink. The other has a bath, shower, and sink. Each has plenty of storage space.

The split bathroom idea cuts down waiting time in the morning when everyone is trying to get ready for breakfast!

37. Disney Stateroom Door Decoration is Encouraged

disneycruisedoormagnets

Walk along the corridors of your Disney cruise ship and you will see some spectacular door decorations. Your imagination is the only limit to just how creative you can get.

The doors and walls in your Disney cruise stateroom are magnetic.

Decorations are available to buy, or get creative and make your own!

Just make sure that you do not cause any damage to the stateroom – use magnets, not tape.

You don’t want a nasty shock on your final account if you are fined for damaging the wall!

You might want to check out What Not To Do in Your Disney Stateroom

38.  There is Plenty of Storage

disneycruisestorage

Disney cruise staterooms are very well-designed.

There is plenty of storage space for all your clothes and travel gear.

We always unpack as soon as we arrive so that we have everything to hand.

An invaluable packing item is these Packing Cubes make everything really easy.

You can keep items together. No more searching for socks or swimming stuff. Keep them all organized and you can then just transfer them to a draw in your stateroom.

All the Disney ships now have beds that provide enough space to store your suitcases underneath. You can unpack and forget about them for the rest of the cruise.

39. Yes You Can Do Laundry on a Disney Cruise

No one really wants to do laundry on vacation, but sometimes it just becomes a necessity.

There are several self-service laundries on all of the Disney ships. We always take our own laundry pods of detergent, but it is available onboard.

40. Interactive Television Choices

Of course, all Disney cruise staterooms have a television.

However, if you are sailing on the Disney Fantasy or the Dream you will have a much bigger choice of what to watch in your stateroom than if you sail on the Wonder or the Magic.

The newer ships of the Fantasy, Dream and Wish have on-demand television.

You have a huge choice of Disney movies and television to watch on demand. So if you really want to watch “Peter Pan”, “Toy Story” and “Mary Poppins” in your stateroom you can.

The stage shows from the Walt Disney Theatre are also shown on the television and repeated, so if you miss a show you can watch it in your stateroom.

41. Save a Hotel Key

It is a good idea to hang on to that old hotel room key. The reason? To make the lights work in the stateroom you have to put a credit card-sized card in the slow by the door.

You are supposed to use your Key To The World for this. However, we prefer not to as you are more likely to forget to take it with you and get locked out of your room.

42. Disney Invented Rotational Dining

disneycruisefood

Disney cruise lines are known for their innovative ideas. One of the very best is the concept of Rotational Dining.

What is this?

On each Disney cruise ship, there are 3 main dining restaurants.

All have their own very unique theme. Each night you will visit a different restaurant.

When you rotate between restaurants your servers will come with you!

This has a wonderful advantage in that your servers get to know you.

The Disney cruise servers are amazing and go out of their way to make sure that you enjoy the dining experience.

Your servers will get to know your likes and dislikes. They will even cut up your child’s food for them! Nothing is too much trouble for them.

For more information on how this works, you can see our Disney Cruise Rotational Dining Guide

43. Can’t Decide What To Choose on the Menu?

Overwhelmed by the great choices on the Disney cruise restaurant menus? No problem. You can order a couple of options and no one will mind.

If you want the salmon and the steak go ahead.

Two desserts?

Just be aware that your waistline may not forgive you for it!

44. Want Something Not on the Disney Cruise Menu?

disneycruisemenu

Your Disney servers want you to have the best experience possible and will do everything they can to accommodate you.

If you enjoyed a particular dish one evening make sure that they know. If you give them at least 24 hours’ notice they may be able to get it for you again.

Just be considerate.

They will make it happen if they can.

So if you want that same entree or dessert every night just let them know.

45. Don’t Skip Animator’s Palate

disneydreamanimatorspalate

Each ship has three rotational dining restaurants. They are all a little different from each other, apart from Animator’s Palate which is on all of the Disney ships.

Your first night in Animator’s Palate has a very special show for you. Be sure not to miss it.

46. The Disney Cruise Drinks are Free – Sort Of

disneycruisedrinkoftheday

Well, not all of the drinks are free, but you could sail on the whole Disney cruise without spending anything extra on beverages.

You just have to know which are free.

There is free soda from the dispensers on the pool deck which is available 24/7.

Soda, regular coffee, tea, iced tea, and milk are available for free in the dining rooms.

Your waiters will learn your preferences and bring them to your table to have them waiting for you for dinner.

disneypalodrinks

Of course, there are many tempting drinks that are not free.

All alcoholic beverages and cocktails are charged for.

You may be tempted by the drink of the day. There is always an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic drink of the day available at a reduced price.

For the complete guide check out:

Disney Cruise Line – Are The Drinks Really Free?

47. Sometimes There Are Free Cocktails

disneycruisedrinkspackage

Yes, you read it right.

On the formal evening of the Captain’s Dinner, there is a welcome reception with wait staff offering cocktails and wine.

The Ship’s Officers including the Captain will be there to greet you.

If you attend a Disney Vacation Club sales presentation it is used to be they gave out free cocktails. However, it is now many years since I have seen this.

In the last few presentations, I have been to they have only given out free bottled water.

You used to get a very nice gift when you attended but recently we have not seen this.

The presentation is fun and there is no sales pressure. You may be tempted though, so do your calculations carefully before you sign up!

There is usually a free draw to enter to win an onboard credit.

Also, you will probably be offered an onboard credit to attend a one-on-one sales consultation.

48. Have a Celebration?

Always tell your servers if you have a celebration such as a birthday or an anniversary. They will arrange something special for you.

49. Endless Disney Cruise Ice Cream

Self-service ice cream is available for free on the pool decks of every Disney ship.

Why not make your own float with the free soda and ice cream?

50. Didn’t Finish That Bottle of Wine?

disneycruisewinepackage

If you want to enjoy wine at dinner, but don’t think you can finish the bottle, Disney has a solution.

Your server will save your wine for you and the next day it will be waiting at your table for you.

Is The Disney Cruise Wine Package Worth The Cost?

51. Breakfast and Lunch are Not Just A Buffet

disneycruisebreakfast

Every Disney ship has an amazing breakfast and lunch buffet served up on the pool deck.

However, what some people don’t realize is that there is a sit-down breakfast and lunch served in one of the restaurants every day.

52. Disney Cruise Special Dietary Needs? No Problem

Disney cruise lines are incredible at catering to any special dietary need you may have. We have sailed with family members who need vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets.

Just tell your waiters or mention your dietary needs at the buffet or specialty restaurants.

You can also register this in your Cruise Personalizer before you board. Disney cruise lines will do everything they can to help you.

Disney Cruise chefs are more than willing to create special meals for you.

53. Breakfast is with Character

characterbreakfastondisneycruise

If you are sailing on a Disney cruise which is 7 nights or longer, you will have the opportunity to have a character breakfast. This is included in the cost of your cruise.

As anyone who has been to Disney World or Disneyland will know, this is a huge benefit!

Character breakfasts usually cost $40 and up per person on land. On your Disney cruise, it is included in the cost of your fare.

You do have to plan ahead for the Disney cruise character breakfast . You need a ticket and places are limited. You need to log in to your Cruise Personalizer as soon as you can, to book tickets.

There may be some available from Guest Services. Go as soon as you board the ship. They are limited and you do not want to be disappointed.

Note that this service is currently suspended

D ISNEY CRUISE ROOM SERVICE

54. disney cruise room service is free.

dineycruisebreakfastroomservice

Room service on a Disney cruise is free.

There are some items that are charged for such as alcohol and soda, but most of it is free of charge.

Just remember to tip the crew member who delivers your food.

Make sure that you have some $1 bills handy.

However, if you forget, no problem.

You can add a tip to the receipt that you will have to sign.

55. Not Everything is on the Room Service Menu

There are some items that are not on the menu but are available from room service.

One of the most popular items which are not shown on the menu is the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar.

Cake of the Day is on the menu, but the secret items are Dessert of the Day and Pie of the Day.

Obviously, these change every day, so we have a tradition of making sure we order these on sea days.

Disney Cruise Room Service Menu

56. Breakfast in Bed is On The House

disneycruiseroomservice

Breakfast in bed can seem like an extravagant indulgence. However, on a Disney cruise, you can indulge as many times as you like.

It is all part of the service. Just fill out your breakfast selections on the card in your stateroom and put it on your door prior to 3 am the night before.

Then wake up to your breakfast choices delivered to your room.

The best way to enjoy breakfast is on your verandah. One of the best times we ever had on a Disney cruise was sitting on our verandah eating breakfast whilst going through the Panama Canal locks.

57. Milk and Cookies in the Evening

Yes, we know that you will probably have consumed more food than you want to admit by the evening.

However, there really is nothing quite like ordering milk and cookies before bedtime.

58. Order Coffee at Night

disneycruisecovecafecoffee

No, we are not suggesting that you get your caffeine fix just before bedtime.

However, if you order a carafe of coffee just before you go to bed at night it will still be warm enough in the morning for you to enjoy.

This means you won’t have to be disturbed by room service early in the morning, but you will be able to stumble out of bed and have your first cup of coffee when you wake up.

59. D ISNEY CRUISE FOR KIDS

disneywonderkidsclub

A Disney cruise is for all ages. You just know that the kids are going to have a blast with all of the features on board for them.

60. It’s A Small World Nursery

Disney cruise lines are one of only a few cruise lines that offer a babysitting service for the under 3s.

Starting aged 6 months and going all the way up to the age of 3 the It’s a Small World Nursery will care for the youngest cruisers on the ship.

There is an additional charge and you do have to book in advance. You can do this online in the Cruise Personalizer.

The charge is $9 per hour for your first child and $8 per hour for the second and any additional children. in your family.

61. The Oceaneer’s Club and Lab is Paradise for Kids

Your kids probably won’t want to leave the kid’s clubs. The Oceaneer’s Club and Lab are for children aged 3 to 12.

Who wouldn’t want to meet Spiderman or pilot the Millennium Falcon? There are lots of organized activities or they can just play with their new friends.

62. The Edge is the Place to be for Tweens

disneycruiseedge

The 11 to 14-year-old set can often be the most difficult to please. Fortunately, on a Disney cruise, they have The Edge.

If you have an 11-year-old they have the choice of either being in The Edge or the Oceaneer’s Club.

63. The Vibe is the Place Teens Want to Be

disneycruiesvibe

Wondering what your teens are going to do on the Disney cruise ships?

The answer is to spend a whole lot of time in Vibe. Particularly if you are sailing on the Disney Dream or the Disney Fantasy.

The newer shops have a fabulous outdoor area for the teens which includes hot tubs and a sun deck.

64. Chill Spa is Open for Teens

Most spas are for the over-18s only. However, Disney has recognized that sometimes teens want to be pampered in the spa.

Check out the Chill Spa which is exclusively for the 13 to 18-year-old set.

D ISNEY CRUISE POOL DECK

65. ride the aquaduck.

disneyaquaduck

One of the best features of Disney Fantasy and the Dream is the AquaDuck. A water coaster at sea!

The Wish has the AquaMouse.

This is a lot of fun for all the family, but of course, the wait times can be long.

To get your best chance of riding with almost no lines on embarkation day or wait until night time.

Most people are either watching the show or eating dinner in the evening so the lines are short.

66. The Disney Cruise Pools are Fun

disney cruise swimming pool

All of the Disney ships have two pools on the family pool deck.

The first is a toddler pool and the second is the family pool. Don’t expect to get any real swimming done in these pools!

The family pool is small and on sea days tends to be crowded.

67. Relax on a Pool Lounger

disneycruisepooldeck

There are plenty of pool loungers around the pool and up on the deck.

Be considerate of others and do not reserve a lounger by putting a towel or your belongings on it.

Just not cool.

68. Towels are Provided

There is no need to bring your own pool towels on board or take towels from your stateroom.

There are plenty of pool towels up on the deck.

69. Catch a Movie on Disney Funnel Vision

disneycruiseconciergetips

One of the best features of the Disney cruise pool deck is Funnel Vision.

Disney movies are played all day and evening.

It’s fun to splash around in the pool and watch a Disney movie.

At night relax on a pool lounger and snag one of the blankets and watch a Disney movie.

D ISNEY CRUISE TIPS FOR ADULTS

disneyfantasyquietcovepool

Many people think that a Disney cruise is centered around the kids, but really this is just not true.

Sure there is plenty going on for the younger members of the group, but there are so many things for the adults to enjoy too.

70. Disney Dining for Adults

Disney has some of the best dining at sea.

All of the ships have dining which caters to the over-18s only.

Every Disney ship has Palo, which is an Italian-themed restaurant. Disney’s Palo offers dinner every night of the cruise and brunch on select days.

I think that the very best value is Palo brunch .

With a charge of just $45, you can eat your way through a huge selection of hot entree items.

Note that the buffet is currently not available at Palo Brunch but you can order all you like from the menu.

disneymagicpalo

Remy is available on Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Widely recognized as one of the best culinary experiences at sea, Remy is named after the lead character in the Pixar movie Ratatouille.

Dinner is available every night. The Champagne Brunch and the Dessert Experience are offered on select days.

Yes, it is pricey at $95 per person for dinner, and $200 if you want the wine pairing.

Enchante is the fine dining restaurant on Disney Wish.

71. Indulge at the Disney Cruise Spa

If you want to experience the ultimate in relaxation you can book a Disney spa treatment. There are lots of options offered including treatments for couples.

You can book ahead of your sailing to get the best reservation times.

Appointments do book up, so if you have something specific in mind, book online before you sail.

Remember though that all spa treatments will have an 18% gratuity automatically added.

72. The Disney Cruise Rainforest Room is Pure Luxury

disneycruiserainforesthottub

Every Disney Ship has a Rainforest Room in the spa.

This is truly the place to be if you want to indulge in some luxurious downtime and relaxation.

The Wish has the largest Rainforest Room. It is also the only one which is open to the outdoors from above.

The Disney Dream and the Fantasy still have probably the very best Rainforest rooms on the Disney ships.

Each has two steam rooms, a dry sauna, and scented showers with multiple different programs.

A fabulous feature is the heated hot stone loungers with views of the ocean.

You can even relax in one of the two hot tubs which overlook the ocean.

disneywonderrainforest

The Disney Wonder and the Magic also have the Rainforest Room, but it is not quite so luxurious.

They have saunas, steam rooms, heated loungers, and showers. It’s a nice space but not as great as on the larger ships.

Why The Disney Cruise Rainforest Room is Worth It

73. Adult-Only Pools on Disney Cruises

disneywonderquietcovepool

There is plenty of space reserved for the over-18s only on the Disney ships.

This includes adult pools and hot tubs.

74. Bars and Lounges on the Disney Ships

DisneyWonderBars

There are plenty of options of places to enjoy a drink or two on all of the Disney ships.

One of our favorites is the Ooh La La bar on the Disney Fantasy. Guests can choose from an extensive champagne menu.

The French boudoir decor is completely over the top, but it’s a lot of fun.

Guide to Bars on the Disney Wonder

75. Disney Cruise Lines Alcohol Policy

disneycruisealcohol

Disney cruise lines have a very generous policy about how much of your own beer and wine you can bring on board. Many cruise lines do not let you bring anything at all.

However, on a Disney cruise, you can bring up to 2 bottles of wine or 6 bottles of beer per adult.

You can drink the wine in your stateroom and there is no charge.

However, if you want to enjoy the wine you brought to the restaurant there will be a $25 corkage charge.

76. Disney Cruise Wine Packages Can Save You Money

disneywinepackageprices

If you enjoy drinking wine on a Disney cruise the Wine Package may be the thing for you.

The Wine Package allows you to pre-purchase either a Classic or a Premium Package.

You choose the number of days from 3 to 7 nights. Each night you can pick a bottle from the Classic or Premium Wine list.

Prices start at $95 for a 3-night package.

The more nights you have, the cheaper the per-bottle price works out to be.

If you don’t finish the bottle that evening it will be stored for you and you can drink it later.

You can see more details at Disney Cruise Wine Package

77. Pick Up A Coffee Card

disneycruisetipping

You can get free drip coffee on the pool deck or in the restaurants.

However, it isn’t the best coffee you have ever tasted.

If you enjoy a decent cup of specialty coffee you can pay extra for your drink of choice.

Ask for a coffee card. Each time you buy a drink you will get a stamp. When you have 5 stamps your 6th drink will be free.

It used to be that you could save these and use on your next cruise. However, now the card states that they are not to be used on a future cruise.

Time will tell whether or not the servers still allow it, but don’t bet on this trick still working.

Use your free coffee entitlement before your current cruise ends.

78. The Cove Cafe is a Must

disneycruisecash

One of our favorite areas on the Disney cruise is the Cove Cafe. It is a great place to sit and read a book and enjoy a coffee or something a little stronger.

There is a small selection of books and magazines, but bring your own as the selection really is small.

Cove Cafe is a very tempting place to pick up some snacks.

Check out the croissants in the morning. We challenge you to resist the selection of cakes and desserts in the display cabinet.

It is all included so you can indulge!

E NTERTAINMENT ON A DISNEY CRUISE

79. check your disney cruise navigator often.

The Navigator is where you will find out what’s happening on board the ship every day. The paper Navigator is now only delivered to your stateroom every night if you request this from your Room Steward.

If you want a paper Navigator you can pick one up at Guest Services. Or you can use the Disney Navigator App on your phone. Remember to download it before you get on board.

80. The Disney Cruise Shows are Amazing

This really can’t be overstated.

You will be amazed at just how good the shows are on the Disney cruise.

They are Broadway quality and you should definitely make time to see as many shows as you can.

There are two performances every evening. You can see the early one if you have late seating and the late one if you are dining at 5.45 pm.

81. Take Your Seats Early

waltdisneytheatredisneycruise

All shows are performed in the Walt Disney Theatre. There really isn’t a bad seat in the house, but there are some which are better than others.

We like to be about five or six rows back in the middle.

However, if you do not arrive early the front level of seats is likely to be gone.

We prefer anything in the middle over the ones on the sides, even if it is quite far back.

Saving seats for others is really bad form.

Don’t do it.

82. Each Disney Ship Has Different Shows

disneywonderwaltdisneytheatre

Each ship has a different selection of shows, although there is some overlap with certain shows being staged on more than one of the Disney cruise ships.

On the nights when the big stage productions are not scheduled, there will usually be another entertainer such as a magician or a juggler.

Many of these entertainers have been performing with Disney cruise lines for many years and they are generally very good.

83. There May Be A Show For The Adults

Not everything is family-friendly! Often there is a late-night version of one of the entertainer’s acts such as a comedian or a magician.

Treat yourself and let the kids go to the kid’s clubs while you enjoy a night out.

84. Go to the Movies!

The Disney cruise movie theatres show new releases and classic movies.

Each of the Disney ships has at least one. Disney Wish has two!

85. Skip The Popcorn

Outside the Walt Disney Theatre and the Buena Vista Theatre, you will be tempted by the smell of popcorn and the lure of specialty drinks.

These items are not included.

If you want to take a drink into the show with you stop on the pool deck to get your drinks for free. You can even bring some snacks in with you if you want – that is if you aren’t already full from the buffet!

86. There is Something for Everyone

disneycruiseaccount

Every day there are lots of events scheduled.

Want to learn how to draw Mickey Mouse, make that dessert you just enjoyed in the restaurants or enjoy a wine-tasting event?

Most things on board are included, but you will have to pay extra for wine-tasting events.

87. The Art of the Theme Tour is Not to be Missed

This adults-only tour of the ship is well worth joining.

It is free and will take you on a tour whilst showing you some of the design secrets of the Disney ships.

There is so much attention to detail on the Disney ships and it is nice to hear some of the behind-the-scenes stories.

D ISNEY CASTAWAY CAY

DisneyCruiseCastawayCayDoubleDip2015

One of the highlights of a Disney Caribbean or Bahamian cruise is a port stop at Castaway Cay.

Disney cruise line has its own fabulous private island in the Bahamas. Here are some Disney cruise tips to make the most of your visit to Castaway Cay.

Disney Castaway Cay – The Ultimate Guide

88. Send a Special Post Card

Castaway Cay has its own post office. If you want to send a card with a very special stamp just stop at the post office. It is on your left just after you get off the ship.

89. There are Trams to Get You Around Castaway Cay

You can easily walk to the beaches, but there are plenty of trams to get you there if you want to save energy. We usually walk to the beach if it isn’t too hot, but we always take the tram back.

90. Pick Your Perfect Beach

The most popular beach is the Family Beach on Castaway Cay .

However, there is a beach reserved solely for the over-18s. Make your way to Serenity Bay if you want some peace and quiet.

castawaycaydisneyprivateislandbanamas

Disney Castaway Cay Excursions and Activities

91. No Need to Get Back on the Ship to Eat

There is plenty of food on Castaway Cay. While it isn’t the finest food you will eat on your Disney cruise, the barbecue is perfectly fine. There is something about eating good barbecue food on the beach that makes it so much fun.

However, make sure that you have eaten breakfast. The barbecues are only open for lunch.

92. Special Dietary Needs on Castaway Cay

If you have special dietary requirements make sure that you let your waiters know on the ship. They will make sure that it is waiting for you at the barbecue.

93. Join in the Castaway Cay 5K Run

A very popular event on Castaway Cay is the 5K run. It is free of charge and ages 10 and up can take part.

You don’t have to sign up anymore.

Make sure that you get an early start though – it can get very hot on the island!

94. Try Something New

You can spend the day on one of the beaches, or you can try one of the Castaway Cay Port Adventures.

These range from snorkeling to parasailing, and kayaking to getting up close and personal with a stingray. You can book these ahead of time on your Cruise Personalizer, or when you get on the ship.

95. The Quest for a Castaway Cay Cabana

One of the most difficult reservations to get on a Disney cruise is a Castaway Cay Cabana.

Even though prices start at $399 this is one of the most sought-after things on a Disney cruise.

You can book them in your Cruise Personalizer, but as there are only 21 cabanas available, they sell out in minutes.

You really need to either be a Concierge guest or a Pearl Castaway Cay member to be in with a chance.

You can try your luck when you board the ship by putting your name on the waitlist.

You could get very lucky and someone may cancel. It happens, but just don’t bet on it!

96. Take Your Time

People tend to get back on the ship in the early afternoon.

Whilst we always recommend getting back on board in good time, you can wait until shortly before all aboard time on Castaway Cay.

This gives you maximum time on the island.

97. Be Safe

It is important always to wear sunscreen. Sunburn is never a good thing and it can ruin your vacation.

The combination of the sun sea and the perfect island can sometimes make you forget to keep reapplying sunscreen.

Just be careful.

We have written a Complete Guide to Castaway Cay where you will find lots more tips and ideas.

M EET THE DISNEY CHARACTERS

disneycruisecharacters

A Disney cruise is a great place to get to meet a huge variety of Disney characters.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of the experience.

98. Check Your Navigator

There are lots of character appearances every day. The schedule will be posted in your Navigator every day. You can plan who you want to meet.

99. The Character Attendant is Your Friend

All Disney characters have an attendant to keep them organized and safe. If you have any questions always ask the attendant.

They can help with questions like when the next appearance will be and what costume the character will be wearing. They will also take pictures of you with your own camera.

100. Arrive Early

We think that it is much easier to meet characters on a Disney cruise than it is at the parks. However, you should still be prepared for a wait.

The characters often spend more time with guests than they would in the parks.

Usually, if you arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled appearance you will be towards the front half of the line.

101. Bring An Autograph Book

Make sure that you bring something for the characters to sign.

We have heard recently that Marvel characters will not sign anything which has been signed by a Disney or Pixar character, so you may need to bring separate books if you are swapping universes!

102. Look Around You

Often the best character sightings are ones that you don’t expect. We remember seeing Chip and Dale up on deck during the Panama Canal cruise.

Or sometimes you see characters in the hallways walking to the meet and greet.

103. Meeting the Princesses

You can never guarantee which Princesses will be on board, but they will definitely be available for a meet and greet.

Usually, you will see Tiana, Cinderella, and Belle. However, don’t guarantee to your 4-year-old they will see a specific Princess as they may not be on board.

There is always a Disney Princess ticketed event. You can sign up in your Cruise Personalizer or at Guest Services. Tickets are limited and go quickly. This is not an essential event as you will see them at other times.

104. Anna and Elsa are Different

disneywonderfrozen

Anna and Elsa are rather more difficult to find. The only way to see them is to get tickets for the meet and greet. You will not see them out and about on the ship.

Note this is temporarily suspended

105. Tea With A Disney Princess

The best way to have time with the Princesses is by booking the Disney Cruise Royal Court Royal Tea .

This amazing opportunity to meet the Disney Princesses includes plenty of time to meet your favorites whilst enjoying a traditional High Tea.

You will have to book ahead and be prepared to blow the budget. This experience is designed for those aged 3 to 12 and costs $210 per child and $69 per adult.

The children will walk away with some nice gifts and some great memories – but obviously, the cost takes some thinking about.

106. This Doesn’t Work Anymore

You might read online that if you take a shirt or picture frame and some markers to Guest Services it will magically be returned to your stateroom having been signed by the character.

Unfortunately, it seems as though too many people got to know about this Disney cruise tip, so they had to stop doing it.

107. Characters on Castaway Cay

Some of the characters make it out onto Castaway Cay (although you will never see a Princess on the island).

One of the coolest characters is Captain Jack Sparrow who will often make an appearance out on Serenity Bay.

Top Gun: Maverick Made One Top Gun Story Decision Terrible On A Rewatch

5 moments in tombstone that really happened (& 5 that were completely made up), mad max 5 would be perfect for tom hardy as his $1.36 billion franchise comes to an end.

Two years after Top Gun: Maverick ’s incredible box office success, it looks less and less likely that Tom Cruise will ever star in a bigger movie than the hit sequel. Viewers waited a long time for Top Gun: Maverick . 34 years after the original movie hit cinemas, viewers were prepared to finally see its sequel on the big screen in 2020. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and another two years were added to the multi-decade wait between franchise installments. The pressure on the sequel was immense, and it was reasonable to assume no movie could live up to its pre-release hype.

Top Gun's original ending was replaced with a more uplifting, romantic final scene, but Top Gun: Maverick proved the original ending was better.

However, by the time Top Gun: Maveric k’s ending rolled around, it was clear the Tom Cruise vehicle had done the impossible. Top Gun: Maverick was better than Top Gun , with more emotional depth, sharper action sequences, and a more streamlined story than its predecessor. It is hard to see how Top Gun 3 ’s story could hope to top the conflict between Gooster and Maverick, one that was strengthened by the sheer length of time between franchise outings. Cruise’s Maverick aged visibly between outings and this made Top Gun: Maverick a more poignant viewing experience than anticipated.

Top Gun: Maverick Is Likely To Remain Tom Cruise’s Biggest Movie Ever

The top gun sequel made $1.4 billion upon its 2022 release.

Top Gun: Maverick ’s critical success was reflected in its box office performance, with the movie becoming the biggest hit of Tom Cruise’s career. Top Gun: Maverick made a historically huge $1.4 billion at the box office , becoming the biggest hit of 2022 thanks to Avatar: The Way of Water ’s December release date. While Top Gun: Maverick made Top Gun ’s ending worse with its revelations about the franchise’s unstable protagonist, the sequel managed to outdo all of Cruise’s earlier successes at the box office in the process. Even the Mission: Impossible series, another historically successful franchise, couldn’t compete with it.

Top Gun: Maverick had the smallest second weekend drop of any movie that earned over $100 million on its opening weekend (via BBC )

Top Gun: Maverick ’s success could be attributed to several factors ranging from its early summer arrival to a lack of robust competition at the box office, to a growing desire among cinema goers to return to theaters. The immersive, intense action benefited from big-screen viewing, but Cruise’s status as one of a dwindling number of true A-list hitmakers also helped the sequel. However, the performance of his movies both before and after Top Gun: Maverick makes it clear that the sequel won’t be outdone anytime soon, and he may never be able to replicate its massive financial success.

Top Gun: Maverick Massively Outperformed 1986’s Original Top Gun

Top gun earned $357 million.

Before the sequel’s release, it seemed impossible that Top Gun: Maverick could hope to out-earn Top Gun . Top Gun made $357 million in 1986 which, although it may sound like a paltry sum, was a staggering amount of money at the time. Adjusted for inflation, this would have amounted to $924.4 million in 2022 (via CPIInflationCalculator ). Since Cruise’s biggest movie before Top Gun: Maverick , Mission: Impossible —Fallout , earned only $791 million, this feat seemed almost impossible until Top Gun: Maverick arrived. Top Gun: Maverick not only outdid this number but ended up becoming one of the twelve highest-grossing movies of all time.

Regardless of Top Gun 3 ’s plot , it is hard to see how the sequel could not only repeat but outdo this historic success. Top Gun 3 would now need to earn over $1.4 billion to become Cruise’s biggest movie ever, meaning it would be among the 10 most successful movies in box office history (not adjusted for inflation). Until recently, it seemed as if Cruise’s other lucrative franchise, the Mission: Impossible movies, could have produced a sequel that would outdo Top Gun ’s follow-up. However, 2023’s box office proved this isn’t necessarily true thanks to one unexpected under-performer.

Tom Cruise’s 2023 Sequel Proves His Box Office Dominance Isn’t Infallible

Mission: impossible - dead reckoning part one underperformed badly.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One made only $567 million at the box office 14 months after the release of Top Gun: Maverick , proving that Cruise’s star power isn’t unassailable. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One ’s box office performance would be impressive for most stars , but the movie’s massive budget and the franchise’s history complicated this. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One was one of the most expensive movies ever made and was expected to outperform its predecessors. 2018’s Mission: Impossible - Fallout made $791 million and its predecessor Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation made $688 million, so an upward trend appeared likely.

Cruise’s biggest hit was simply too successful.

The success of Cruise’s Top Gun and Mission: Impossible franchises seemed like a sure thing after Top Gun: Maverick ’s incredible impact, so Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One ’s underwhelming box office came as a surprise to many. This could bode badly for Top Gun 3 but, even if it doesn’t, it remains unlikely that the sequel could ever match Top Gun: Maverick ’s success. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One would have been considered an undeniable success if it made $800 million, which is still $600 million less than Top Gun: Maverick . Cruise’s biggest hit was simply too successful.

Cruise’s Few Projects Make Another Huge Hit Less Likely

Cruise has only made movies since seven movies 2015.

The fact that Cruise makes so few movies is the main reason Top Gun: Maverick ’s success is unlikely to be replicated , as the actor is simply less likely to enjoy another huge hit when he can rarely be seen in the multiplex. This ensures every Tom Cruise movie is a cultural event, but it comes at a cost. Cruise made only seven movies in the nine years between 2015 and 2024, and one was the regrettable 2017 flop The Mummy . Unlike busier actors, his refusal to prioritize quantity over quality makes him starring in a bigger hit than Top Gun: Maverick less likely.

Top Gun 3 Is Unlikely To Outdo Top Gun: Maverick’s Box Office Impact

Top gun and its sequel’s 36-year gap helped top gun: maverick.

Top Gun 3 almost certainly won’t out-earn Top Gun: Maverick for numerous reasons. For one thing, there won’t be a 36-year wait between movies to build hype. For another, Top Gun 3 will have a hard time expanding on Top Gun: Maverick ’s self-contained story and the sequel may struggle without Iceman to ground Cruise’s cocky antihero. However, there is some hope left for the star’s attempts to outdo his own record. After all, until the release of Top Gun: Maverick , it seemed like Tom Cruise would never be able to match, let alone outdo, the success of the 1986 original.

21+ Best Cruise Cabin Tips, Secrets, & Things to Know (Read Before Sailing)

When you are on the ship, your cruise cabin is your home away from home. It’s a place for you to relax, take in a beautiful view (assuming you have a balcony), and generally enjoy yourself. It’s not just where you sleep; it’s your refuge away from the rest of the ship.

cruise cabin tips and things to know

But cabins on the ship have some unique characteristics that make them unique from any other place you might stay, such as a hotel room or an AirBnB.

Because of the small size of cruise rooms and the fact that you are literally on a floating hotel, things a little different than you might be used to… and you need to know how before you sail. There are also small things you can do that make your experience much better and more comfortable.

To get you prepared, here are more than 20 tips, tricks, and things to know for your cabin before you get on the cruise ship.

Note: The links to Amazon used below are affiliate links. Should you make a purchase, we receive a small percentage of the sale at no extra cost to you.

Save Money With Interior Rooms on Short Trips (Splurge for Nicer Cabins on Longer Cruises)

Interior cabin on NCL ship

Cruises come in all sorts of lengths, but two of the popular lengths are those that are short (around 3-5 days) and then trips that are a full week. If you’re not sure whether to spend more and get the balcony or suite, or to spend less and go with an interior room, we have a suggestion.

On shorter trips of less than five days, we say save the money and go with the lower-priced cabin. When you’re on the ship for just a few days, you’ll likely spend more time out and about, including by the pool and in port. So having an interior cabin isn’t a big deal and can save you money.

But on longer trips, it’s a good idea to splurge and get a nicer room. In this case, having a balcony will offer a sanctuary for when you need some time to recharge or just have some downtime on a longer cruise.

Don’t Eat Smelly Food in the Room (Especially Interior Cabins!)

Want to dine away from crowds? You can order room service on the ship or simply grab a dish from the buffet and take it back to your room. It’s a great way to dine without having a lot of other people around. Before you do, however, consider what you are eating.

In interior or oceanview cabins, there is no way to get fresh air into the room. That means any food you bring in will have a lingering smell. A piece of chocolate cake? Who wouldn’t want the room smelling like that? But a plate of eggs? You could be reminded of that meal well after you’ve eaten it.

This isn’t as big an issue with balcony cabins or suites as they have access to fresh air, but be aware of it in other rooms.

Be Careful of the “Wind Tunnel” Effect in Balcony Cabins

Balcony door open

If you have a balcony cabin, one of the big benefits is having access to fresh air. Many people choose to leave the door open to let in a breeze, hear the ocean, and generally enjoy the sea.

If you do this, you need to be aware of the wind tunnel that can be created should you open the balcony door and the front door of the cabin at the same time. If conditions are right, instantly a huge gust can move through the room, creating all sorts of chaos, blowing things off tables, and potentially slamming doors closed with the wind.

Instead, just have one door at a time and you don’t have to worry about anything.

Don’t Hang Things to Dry on the Balcony

On a cruise you’re going to have wet clothes and wet towels. The tempting thing to do is to hang them out on the balcony to let them dry versus hanging them in the cabin. But you’ll be warned against hanging clothes on the balcony, and it’s not a good idea anyway.

It can get breezy on the ship, especially if the ship is underway. All it takes is one gust of wind and your towels and swimsuits are taking a ride down to the ocean, never to be seen again.

Instead, cabins come with a small clothesline in the bathroom or you can bring magnetic hooks to dry things (see below). If you have wet pool towels, you can exchange them out for dry one at the pool deck.

Ordering Water for the Room is a Smart Idea

Many cruise lines will let you bring on non-alcoholic drinks . But there are often rules about packaging (for example, Carnival allows cans and cartons, but not bottles) and you have to deal with lugging those items around.

For that reason, we recommend simply ordering a small case of water for the cabin. Getting a drink of water on the ship can be tricky. You have to go to a bar or the buffet, or drink out of the bathroom tap, which just seems wrong. Instead, if you order a case of water, it will be there waiting for you in the room and you don’t have to go far to get a drink.

Bring a Few Magnetic Hooks for the Cabin

cruise tips movie

You might not realize it, but the ceiling of your cabin is made of metal. That’s nothing to write home about, but it can come in handy. If you bring some magnetic hooks ( you can find them for cheap on Amazon ), then they are perfect for hanging items in the room.

Where this can be especially helpful is hanging clothes to dry. As mentioned, you shouldn’t hang them on the balcony. And while there is a small clothesline in the bathroom, it is usually only large enough for a towel or a couple of swimsuits.

With these hooks, you can stick them to the ceiling and have another spot to hang items to dry.

Our Favorite Cabin Location? Upper Decks… Here’s Why

One tip for selecting your cabin is to look at the upper decks. We think it’s the most convenient location to sail.

The way that cruise ships are designed, there is usually an inner public area in the middle of the ship, with things like the casino, shops, restaurants, and more. This area is normally around decks 6-8.

Then there are the pool and outdoor decks at the top of the ship (these deck numbers vary widely based on the number of levels on the ship).

Getting a cabin between these two areas is ideal. Given that they are the two spots where you’ll spend the most time, it makes sense to be between them. That way you can take the stairs (much faster than the elevator) or simply don’t have to go as far to get to the fun.

Consider Hallway Noise When Selecting a Cabin Location

Cabin hallway on a cruise ship

Cruise cabins are fairly well insulated to where you don’t hear much from the adjoining rooms (within reason). The same can’t be said for the doors. When people pass through the hallway outside the cabin door, you can hear them well. That’s not a big deal most of the time, but if it’s 2 a.m. and a loud group is coming back from the bar, that can definitely wake you up.

That’s why we try to find rooms toward the end of the hall instead of in the middle of the ship. In these locations there is much less foot traffic, meaning less of a chance of passersby in the hallway disturbing the peace and quiet of your room.

Cabin Beds Separate (or Join!) for Your Convenience

cruise tips movie

Staying in a room as a couple? Then you’ll want a single large bed in the cabin. But if you are cruising with a friend, you likely don’t want to actually sleep in the same bed.

When you check-in online ahead of the cruise, you’ll normally be asked how you want the bed configured. If you arrive and the beds aren’t how you wanted, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean you’ll have to sleep in the same bed as your friend or sleep apart from your spouse. Simply ask the room steward and they can put the beds how you want them. Unlike a hotel room, the beds can adjust based on what you want.

Don’t Expect Much From the Cabin TV

We know that people don’t go on a cruise to watch TV, but when you just want some chill-out time there is little that’s better than hanging out in a cool room watching the tube. Unfortunately, there isn’t that much to watch. TV channels are limited, as you might expect when you are in the middle of the sea.

There are typically a couple of movie channels, some news stations, and a few other things to watch, but most channels are related to the cruise. This includes shopping channels, safety information, and replays of events happening onboard.

Put Your Bags Away on the First Day

Unless you pony up for a huge suite, the first thing you’ll notice about your room is that it’s pretty small. Most are around 160-200 square feet. For a cruise with a couple of people, it’s certainly enough space, but you need to do yourself some favors. The biggest is to unpack your bags and put away your suitcases on the first day.

Cabins have lots of storage space, so you’ll have plenty of room for your things. Putting them away right off the bat means you won’t be tripping over bulky suitcases as you try to get around the room where space is at a premium.

Store Your Suitcases Under the Bed

Cruise cabins are small but they make good use of the space they do have. Case in point is that cruise cabin beds are normally raised up with space underneath them.

This area is perfect for storing empty suitcases. They slide under and are completely out of the way, freeing up floor or closet space where they would otherwise be stored. And you also don’t have to worry about forgetting them because they are out of sight. After all, you’re not going to get off the ship without your suitcase.

Good Luck With the Thermostat

Every cabin you sail with have a thermostat in the room, usually located near the door. In our experience, however, it’s not clear if it works. We’ve had rooms where lowering the thermostat quickly turns on the air, cooling things off. Then we’ve had others where changing the temperature seems to do nothing.

As well, it seems like there are often wild swings in temperature even if you don’t touch the thermostat. Just know sometimes it can be frustrating to get the room comfortable.

Never Smoke in Your Cabin (Even on the Balcony)

Do you smoke or vape? It’s not allowed in your cabin . That also includes the balcony area if you have one. Cruise lines put on big fees if you’re caught smoking in the room. Instead, there are designated smoking areas on the ship if you need to light up.

Not only are cruise lines cautious of keeping the room from smelling like smoke for future guests, but the biggest fear on a cruise ship is fire. You’ll notice that most things that produce heat or flame are prohibited. But in the interest of safety, smoking in your cabin where an accidental fire could be an issue is not allowed.

Be Careful Being Naughty on the Balcony

Ships railing

Cruise ship balconies can be romantic places. Your own little cozy, private spot with a beautiful view, the person you love, and a drink in your hand… it simply doesn’t get much better than that. Of course, that may give you the idea of getting a little frisky with your significant other. Or maybe the sunshine makes you want to lay out and get a suntan all over.

Just know that balconies are private, but not completely private . There are dividers between each, but they leave some gaps between them. Sound can easily travel between two balconies and if someone were to simply lean over, they could get a peek into your area.

If you decide to get a little naughty, maybe wait until later at night when fewer people are out.

Let the Cruise Line Select Your Cabin to Save Money

When you go to a hotel, you usually don’t get to select the room you’re given. On cruise ships, you can select your specific cabin, but just know it can be more expensive that way.

While some people care a lot about where the room is, others simply want to get on the ship. When you book, you’re usually given the option to select a “guarantee” cabin. In this case, you select your room type (interior, balcony, etc.), but the cruise selects the actual spot. In return, you can save a decent chunk of change on the room.

But won’t you just get stuck with a bottom floor room next to the elevator? It’s possible, but in our experience having a poor location has yet to happen.

Scout Out an Alternate Bathroom

Ok, let’s get real for a moment. In the course of a cruise, there may be times when you have to go. Packing some air freshener (or Poo-Pourri) is a good idea, but it doesn’t always do the trick. Having smells linger in an enclosed cabin isn’t the best. As well, what if multiple people in the cabin need to go at once?

That’s why one tip is to scout an out-of-the-way bathroom that can be used during these times. Public bathrooms that are located in lower-trafficked areas are usually empty (look on lower decks at the ends of the ship), providing you some privacy and helps keep your cabin that much more pleasant for everyone.

Be Conscientious of Your Neighbors

On a cruise ship, we’ve already mentioned to you that cabins are small. But they are also packed in tight. There might be hundreds of cabins on a deck, and you can literally have another room on either side of yours, one above, one below, and one about three feet across the hall.

In other words, no matter the time of day or night, there is likely someone nearby trying to nap, getting ready for dinner, or simply just relaxing on their vacation.

That’s why it’s nice to be considerate of your neighbors. Things like stomping in the cabin, playing loud music, or having loud conversations shouldn’t be done. Think of the golden rule — if you wouldn’t want people disturbing you in your room, don’t disturb them.

Every Cabin Comes With a Safe That You Should Use

Your cabin is a secure spot, but there’s no reason to get lax. While you’re out at the pool you might leave your money, passport, or phone behind. Instead of just leaving them out in the open, be sure you use the calbin safe.

Every room you stay in will have a safe — usually located in the closet. Putting valuables in here keeps them more secure so you have less to worry about while you’re out enjoying the ship or in port.

Showers Are TIGHT

cruise tips movie

If you feel like a giant in the cruise cabin shower, you aren’t alone. For many rooms, the shower area is just a couple of feet wide. Some are round and you can hit both sides at the same time if you stick your elbows out.

While space is tight, the good news is that shower heads are on flexible hoses so you can take them down to get the water exactly where you need it instead of trying to position yourself just right in a tiny shower.

Hair Dryers Are Included in the Cabin

Save space when you pack and leave the hair dryer at home. No reason to pack a bulky device and take up precious space in your luggage. Every cabin comes with a hair dryer, but it might not be where you think.

Instead of finding the hair dryer in the cabin bathroom, it’s often in the built-in console that houses the mini-fridge and the television set. To be sure, the hair dryer isn’t super powerful (it’s the typical small one you might find in a hotel) but it’s plenty to get you through your cruise.

Be Ready for the Attendant to Be In Your Room Regularly

Cabin stewards are there to make your stay much more comfortable. They typically come twice a day — once in the late morning and once in the early evening — to straighten the room, change out towels, and provide anything else you might need.

With that in mind, be sure to put away anything you wouldn’t want the room attendant to see. So if you packed something romantic for your cruise or snuck on some alcohol you shouldn’t have brought, you might want to keep it out of sight, unless you like having some awkwardness between everyone.

Pack Three Important Things to Make Your Cabin Experience Better

cruise tips movie

Cruise cabins have everything you need… almost. There are some items we highly suggest you pack to make your life in the cabin more comfortable.

Outlet adapter: Newer ships are better, but many older ships have limited outlet space (sometimes just a single plug). That’s why bringing an outlet adapter is ideal. They plug in one spot and provide multiple outlets for all your electronics. Just be sure to pack one that doesn’t have a surge protector as they aren’t allowed on ships.

Small fan: If staying in a balcony room, you have some access to a breeze, but cruise cabins don’t have ceiling fans. Bringing on a small portable fan can give you some air circulation and also provide white noise while you sleep to drown out any sounds of the ship.

Nightlight: No, we don’t think you’re scared of the dark, but if you are staying in an interior room you might not realize it can be pitch black at night. Even rooms with windows or balconies can be pretty dark with the curtains closed. A small nightlight can make it easier to see for those middle-of-the-night bathroom trips.

Bring a Door Decoration (Even a Post-It) to Easily Recognize Your Cabin

Cruise cabins typically line hallways that can stretch the entire length of the ship. For hundreds of feet the décor, carpet, and non-descript doors can seem to simply repeat over and over.

That means finding your cabin can be hard, especially on the first couple of days of the cruise when you are still figuring your way around.

You’ll see many people decorate their doors to help them stand out. If you don’t want to do all that, then just put a bright-colored Post-It note on the door. It will be enough to catch your eye in the sea of blank doors.

8 things seasoned cruisers say you should know before setting foot on your first cruise

  • With so many things to do and see on board, taking a cruise for the first time can be overwhelming.
  • To help you prepare, seasoned cruisers on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas shared their tips.
  • Snag pool chairs early and don't fly in on the day your ship departs, they told Business Insider.

Insider Today

First-time cruisers may feel overwhelmed by the vacation style. It's a new form of transportation for some, and when you're traveling on a large ship with so many places to eat and so many activities and excursions, it can be hard to figure out how to spend your time.

It can be helpful to hear how to make the most of your cruise from those who have done it before. While on Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas in April 2022, Business Insider talked to people who had been on multiple cruises. They shared their best tips to help plan an incredible cruise vacation.

While packing for a cruise, try to keep it light, but make sure you have all the essentials.

cruise tips movie

Sharon Taylor, who has been on five cruises, told Business Insider that first-timers should be careful not to overpack .

"New cruisers think cruising is a fashion show and pack way too many clothes and shoes, but you wind up just wanting to be comfortable," she said.

For a seven-night cruise, Taylor said she brought two bathing suits, four pairs of shorts, two pairs of shoes, one formal outfit, eight pairs of underwear, and six tops. She planned to buy two more tops on the trip.

Paul Gallifrey, who has been on 30 cruises on various lines, said to pack what you need for the length of the cruise but add a few extra options just in case.

"Maybe you decide to change clothes between pool time and the buffet," Gallifrey said. "An extra shirt and pair of shorts will come in handy."

Gallifrey added that some activities on ships and excursions required specific clothing, such as lace-up shoes for zip lining. Check the cruise line's website for these requirements and pack accordingly.

Don't forget to pack a magnet to make finding your stateroom easier.

cruise tips movie

Large cruise ships typically have seemingly endless hallways of staterooms with identical doors.

Taylor said to pack magnets to attach to the outside of your door to help you spot it.

"You will be glad you did when you are looking for your room down those long hallways," Taylor added.

If you have to fly into the port your ship is leaving from, book a flight at least one day before departure to avoid missing the boat.

cruise tips movie

Unless you book a flight through a cruise-line package , the ship will leave without you even if your delayed or canceled flight is what makes you late, Stephanie Franks, who has been on more than 15 cruises, said.

With Royal Caribbean, if you book a flight through the cruise line and it's delayed or canceled, their emergency-travel team will get you on an earlier flight or fly you to the next port to join the cruise, according to the company's website . If you don't book through the cruise line, you'll have to figure it out yourself.

Franks said her friend's flight to Miami got canceled the day before her cruise because of the weather in Florida.

"They hopped in a car and drove 19 hours straight to get here on time. You just never know," she said. "But best to be prepared and early than late."

She recommended flying in at least one day before the ship's departure to leave extra time for delays and cancellations. She said to stay near the port, adding that there were plenty of hotels in Florida with shuttles to the port.

Experienced cruisers recommend booking anything with additional costs before boarding the ship.

cruise tips movie

On cruise ships , there are often restaurants and activities included in the ticket price and some specialty restaurants that cost extra. When stopping at ports, you can also book excursions for an additional cost.

Once your trip is booked, you can often prepay for dining on the ship and excursions at the ports. Reservations generally fill up quickly, so it's smart to get this done as soon as possible to ensure you get the experiences you want. Plus, you'll probably pay less than if you wait until your trip.

"Do everything you can before getting on board to save money," Tekeshia Browne , who has been on over 100 cruises, told BI, adding that there were discounts for restaurants and excursions ahead of the cruise.

If you are a new cruiser, it's easiest to book excursions with the cruise line.

cruise tips movie

At each cruise port, passengers may disembark to spend their time as they wish. They might sightsee independently, take a taxi to a beach, link up with a local tour guide, or join an official cruise-line excursion. Gallifrey said first-time cruisers would likely have the easiest time if they chose the last option.

Navigating ports can be confusing, especially if you're taking transportation to your excursion, but if you book through the cruise line, you'll be directed to exactly where you need to go. Some cruise-line excursions even include meals.

"If you are new to cruising and have not had experience arranging excursions, it is sometimes easier to go with the ones from the cruise line," he said, adding that these excursions guaranteed the ship would wait for you if an outing took longer than planned.

"Self-booked excursions are totally outside of this guarantee," he said.

Some say there's enough to eat, see, and do without spending any more money outside booking your cruise.

cruise tips movie

Some cruisers say that everything included in the ticket price is enough for a great vacation. You can eat at multiple restaurants on the ship, participate in games and activities, attend shows, and explore the ports at no extra cost.

"You don't really need to spend another penny after you have paid for your cruise. There are plenty of awesome free shows, foods — including the main dining room — and things to do at every port," Taylor said. "At ports, I roam around the shops and look at the artisan stuff made by locals."

No matter how you spend your days off or on your ship, you should always read the daily cruise planner.

cruise tips movie

On Royal Caribbean cruises, attendants deliver the daily planner, Cruise Compass, to staterooms each night.

From escape rooms and sports games to dance classes and karaoke, the ship is full of scheduled activities that you'll know about only if you read the Cruise Compass or check the Royal Caribbean app.

Vickie Carmody, who has spent 280 nights on cruise ships, said first-timers should read this planner, adding that she skipped it during her first cruise and missed out.

"My first cruise, I was so bored because I didn't know any better," she said. "I missed the welcome-aboard show, the quest, the poolside games like the belly-flop contest and sexiest-man contest, and a lot of the entertainment around the ship."

If you want to just relax by the pool, get a chair early in the day before people or towels have taken them all.

cruise tips movie

Franks said that by midday on most ships, people took up chairs on pool decks by saving them with towels. So she recommended getting up early to grab a spot at about 6 a.m.

There are rules against saving chairs on cruise ships, but Franks said she has rarely seen them enforced.

"It tends to be a bigger issue on larger ships, ironically," she said. "The smaller ships go to smaller ports, so I guess people focus more on island excursions than the pool deck."
