Luxury Cruises to Scotland

Scotland cruises bring you to a world rich in legend, history, and extraordinary beauty. Mist-shrouded mountains are reflected in glassy lochs. Wild deer graze on hillsides purple with heather. Towering cliffs plunge into water that is as turquoise as anywhere in the Caribbean. Brooding castles lie amid dense forest, guarding the secrets of the centuries.

A cruise to Scotland offers you a thrilling range of places to visit. Stroll the Royal Mile in chic Edinburgh and tour Edinburgh Castle. Join a whisky tasting—you’ll find opportunities to sample the country’s finest at every turn. Take a cruise along the tranquil shores of Loch Lomond, hemmed in by forested, sometimes snow-dusted mountains. Further north, the islands of Orkney are dotted with fascinating Neolithic remains, while Shetland is famed for its birdlife, white-sand beaches, craggy mountains, and shaggy little ponies. Scotland and its islands are without doubt a highlight of Europe cruises in every sense, from history and nature to cuisine and culture.

Scotland Cruise Highlights

Haggis & whisky.

Scotland’s cuisine is unique, with specialties you’ll want to try. Haggis—a dish of spiced meat and offal—is a classic, served with neeps and tatties (turnips and potatoes). The game and seafood here are spectacular. You’ll find opportunities for whisky tasting everywhere; at the 150-year-old Glengoyne Distillery, you can even create your own blend. Have a “wee dram” on your oatmeal in the morning, or try a whisky-flavored “tablet”, which is similar to fudge.

Historic Castles

Scotland is dotted with magnificent, turreted castles and stately homes, many of which are open to the public. The fairytale Inveraray Castle, on Loch Fyne, is home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and houses priceless treasures in its soaring Armoury Hall. From Glasgow, you could also spend a day at the imposing fortress of Stirling Castle. Another option is to travel to Edinburgh and explore Edinburgh Castle, perched on the black crag of Castle Rock.

Remote Islands

Cruises to Scotland visit Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney, and Lerwick in Shetland. Both are remote archipelagos scattered off the north coast. In Shetland, you’ll find jaunty, red timber-framed houses that cling to the treeless hills and seals basking on creamy-white beaches under vast skies. In Orkney, meanwhile, you can explore five-thousand-year-old Skara Brae, one of the best-preserved Neolithic villages in the world.

Featured Scotland Cruise Ports

Edinburgh, scotland.

Beautiful Edinburgh lies on the shores of the Firth of Forth, the dramatic Edinburgh Castle at its heart, which clings to Castle Rock. Stroll the Royal Mile, lined with historic buildings and medieval alleys. Visit the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Scottish residence of the royal family. Royal enthusiasts can also tour the Royal Yacht Britannia for an inside glimpse into the life of the late Queen Elizabeth II. Make time for a whisky tasting while you’re in the Scottish capital.

Glasgow (Greenock), Scotland

Imposing architecture, world-class museums, and a lively pub scene make Glasgow a captivating city to explore. Follow the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Trail to admire the work of the city’s pioneering architect. Gaze at the Monets and Renoirs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and admire the blooms at the impressive Botanic Gardens. Out of town, take a trip to Inveraray Castle, gazing over the shore of serene Loch Fyne, or visit Stirling Castle, dating back to the 12th century.

Lerwick, Scotland

A remote archipelago off the northern tip of Scotland, Shetland is a landscape of towering cliffs, sweeping beaches inhabited only by seals, and grassy hills where hardy Shetland ponies graze. In Lerwick, the bustling little capital, speed through 5,000 years of history at the excellent Shetland Museum and visit the Textile Museum to learn about the islands’ famous knitwear. Take a trip to the fascinating Jarlshof archaeological site to see settlements dating back to the Stone Age and Iron Age.

Scotland Cruise Itineraries

Cruise itineraries featuring ports in Scotland last 11 or 12 nights. There are multiple choices of itinerary available. You could sail from Rotterdam on a cruise visiting Ireland, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Lerwick, in the Shetland Islands. Alternatively, sail from Rotterdam to Kirkwall in Orkney, Iceland, and Lerwick. Round-trip Iceland and Ireland cruises from Southampton include a day in Kirkwall, while Iceland and Scotland itineraries include both Glasgow and Kirkwall.

Itineraries

Why cruise to scotland with celebrity cruises.

On board a Celebrity cruise to Scotland, you’ll find a luxurious spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and live music and entertainment all over the ship. Multiple restaurants and bars offer everything from delicious sushi and seafood to French classics. If you’ve chosen Celebrity Apex, then take in sweeping views of the wild Scottish Highlands from the vantage point of the Magic Carpet. On Celebrity Silhouette, get into the spirit of the destination with a Highlander cocktail featuring Scotch whisky at the intimate World Class Bar. On either ship, choose The Retreat ® for suite accommodation, and try signature dishes created by chef Daniel Boulud in the exclusive Luminae at The Retreat.

Marvel at the highlights of Scotland and its islands as you explore Neolithic ruins, majestic castles, whisky distilleries, towering mountains, and serene lochs. Whether you’re shopping for tartan, tracing your family’s roots, following in the steps of the Vikings, or learning why Scotland is so beloved by Britain’s modern royals, you’ll be endlessly surprised by this multilayered country.

The Majestic Line has been hosting Scottish cruising holidays on the waters off the West Coast for 20 years. Most of our cruises depart from Oban, gateway to the Highlands and the Islands of the Outer and Inner Hebrides – sailing in these waters is the best way to explore the islands and the beautiful coastline of Scotland. Our five small cruise ships are beautiful floating hotels and have been designed to access remote and sheltered anchorages that larger boats find inaccessible. Sailing from April to October we make the most of the longer summer days with opportunities for walking ashore and wildlife spotting or just relaxing onboard. You can find out more about where we go on our Cruising Area.

The Scottish Small Ship Cruising Holiday

Our five small cruise ships offer you a truly unique experience, a Scottish holiday with a difference. Our converted fishing trawlers, Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan , provide accommodation for up to 11 guests, whilst our purpose built vessels, Glen Etive and Glen Shiel , can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. Each of those boats has a crew of four onboard; Skipper, Chef, Engineer and Steward.

For 2024, we are delighted to relaunch Glen Rosa following a extenisve refurbishment. With a crew of Skipper and Chef, she can accommodate up to 6 guests in 3 ensuite cabins.

Our crews provide the very best in Scottish Hospitality and do their best to ensure your cruise runs smoothly. Meals are freshly prepared on board utilizing the wonderful Scottish Larder with our Chefs focusing on locally sourced seasonal produce – seafood is of course a highlight for many on our cruises with mussels from Loch Spelve, langoustine and occasionally a lobster caught in the creels that we keep on board.

The Majestic Line offers a choice of 17 different cruise itineraries from 3 nights , 6 nights or 10 nights . We cruise waters surrounding some of Scotland's iconic islands such as Islay, Jura, Mull, Skye, St Kilda, Staffa and Iona, the small isles of Rum, Muck and Eigg. You can go ashore to enjoy the fantastic scenery, take a walk, visit one of the malt whisky distilleries or gin distilleries, watch the local wildlife. We also operate a river cruise through the Caledonian Canal and Neptune’s Staircase to Loch Ness and sail to Inverness. Discover our Cruises .

The seas off the West Coast of Scotland provide an incredible habitat for all sorts of marine wildlife and our guests regularly see dolphins, porpoises, seals, basking sharks, minke whales, orca, not to mention the amazing sea birds from puffins and petrels to gannets and guillemots. Find out more about the species we regularly see at Wildlife of the West Coast of Scotland and Hebrides .

Our Captain did an excellent job in sometimes difficult conditions with regards to the weather. The crew were always helpful and seemed to have everything under control. Our steward was charming and very hard working and does a great job in the table settings. Everyone enjoyed Chef’s food, he was also very diligent with food allergies which we so appreciated. Everyone was extremely warm, friendly and helpful. The vessel was great! Both inside and out with good windows upstairs and very elegant decor. We found our cabin incredibly comfortable with lots of space for clothing etc. We both very much enjoyed the holiday with the highlight being St Kilda as well as the other guests and crew.

cruise to scottish isles

Captain was highly committed to getting us to St Kilda. The crew as well as having high regard for our safety also spent a lot of time pointing out various places and the wildlife. This was all topped off of course with the high quality of meals and vert well balanced. The overall areas within the boat were of very good quality with ample space, we would recommend this trip to our friends.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much stricter in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Scotland's climate is temperate and, as in the rest of the U. K., the weather tends to be unpredictable. In general, Scotland tends to be cool, damp and cloudy, and is colder on average than the rest of the U.K. The coldest areas are the highlands, and the northern latitude has short winter days and very long summer evenings. The east coast experiences more sunshine, but colder winters, compared to the west. The average high temperatures for May through September range from 55 to 65˚F (13 to 18˚C) and the average low temperatures range from 45 to 55˚F (7 to 13˚C). Glasgow on the west coast has almost 50% more rain per year than Edinburgh.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here .

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with New Headings (Necessary Gear) who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. Formal wear is never required.

In the ship's main dining room, slacks and a collared shirt are acceptable for gentlemen, and for women, slacks/skirt and a blouse are appropriate.   We have found, however, that the international mix of travelers on board tend to dress somewhat more formally than one might expect.   Thus, you may prefer to wear a jacket and tie or a cocktail dress for special evenings like the Captain's welcome and farewell dinners aboard the ship and for the special welcome and farewell dinners at the beginning and end of your journey.   For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing swimming shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts, tennis shoes or flip-flops.

Valet laundry and dry-cleaning services are available for a fee at the hotels. Onboard, valet laundry and pressing services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

Hairdryers are available at the hotels and aboard the ship. For safety reasons, curling and clothes irons are not permitted aboard the ship.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for a cruise:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Hiking boots for those who choose to hike
  • Trekking poles or a walking stick
  • Water shoes or sneakers for those who choose to go on the rib boat (recommended)
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella, waterproof shoes/boots
  • Long pants, fleece jacket or warm sweater; light sweater for warmer days
  • Warm hat, gloves and socks (It can be cool and windy on the Scottish Isles)
  • Sport coat for men (with tie suggested for Captain's dinners) and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, chargers and extra memory cards
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Small flashlight
  • Daypack for your photographic equipment or other belongings
  • Washcloth - not all European hotels provide washcloths, so you may want to bring one along.  A package of pre-moistened towelettes is an excellent alternative.
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Why Cruise the British Isles

The British pubs, Parisian artwork and Irish castles invite you to live like royalty.

Storied and splendid

Castles are the emblem of these regions. Between the chandeliers and tapestries, step into luxury when you visit the British Isles. Cruise to Dublin and parade through the 13th-century halls of the city’s fortress. Experience the grandeur of Urquhart Castle, and search for legendary ghosts in Glamis Castle. Or visit Edinburgh Castle, where kings, queens and nobles once lived and medieval secrets continue to linger.

Melodies of memories past

As the birthplace of many music icons, the British Isles invite you to sing, dance and raise a glass to songs played around the globe. Visit Liverpool to walk in the footsteps of a beloved boyband, and head to a local pub to hear the boys at their best. Cruise the British Isles for an evening of Irish song and dance in Dublin, or watch the Edinburgh Military Tattoo assemble bands, bagpipes and drums for a soul-stirring show.

Globally recognized, historically prominent

The British Isles are a mecca of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Cruise from Southampton to Liverpool, and walk along the Royal Albert Dock, the first structure in Britain to be constructed without wood. Shop along Princes Street in Edinburgh’s New Town. Or travel to Brú na Bóinne in Dublin and get up close to Europe’s largest collection of prehistoric megalithic art.

Raise a glass to adventure

In lands famous for their stouts and ales, pubs are the cornerstone of tradition. Cruise the British Isles and step into age-old establishments that are bustling with spirit. In Dublin, get a taste of true pub “craic” — an Irish term that equates to an atmosphere of fun, entertainment and good company. With festive music playing in the background, sip on world-famous beers that originated nearby while sharing a laugh with locals.

Natural Phenomena

Unexplainable yet undeniable

Discern fact versus fiction on a British Isles cruise, where mysteries and mythologies abound. In Portland, learn about the 5,000-year-old stone circle that displays an advanced understanding of arithmetic and astrology. On itineraries that sail to Cork, search the sea for the Bioluminescence beams created by the region’s gleaming plankton. Or hunt for Invergordon’s legendary monster in the waters of Loch Ness.

Museums & Art Galleries

Ancient artifacts and acclaimed artwork

No cruise to the British Isles is complete without a visit to Paris. See “Venus de Milo” and da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” or tour Notre Dame, a work of art in and of itself. Visit the Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin, where interactive galleries invite you to explore. Those departing from London can also stop by the Victoria and Albert Museum which houses over two million artifacts.

British Isles excursions

Our award-winning shore excursions bring you up close to beautiful coasts, monuments and historical wonderlands. On a British Isles cruise, snap photos of Dublin’s iconic sites — like St. Stephen’s Green and Christ Church Cathedral — and taste a world-famous stout at the Guinness Storehouse. Or ride through quaint villages in Belfast on your way to Giant’s Causeway, and revel in the natural structures that surround you.

Enhance your cruise

Each of our cruises has been carefully designed for you to get the very best out of your time on board; and now you can enhance your cruise to make it even more special.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Scottish Small Ship Cruises:  Discover Scotland's Wild Isles

Visit Scotland's Wild Isles aboard one of our unique, small cruise ships. We take our passengers (couples, solos,  groups  and  families ) from Dunstaffnage Marina, near Oban, to the majestic Outer and Inner Hebrides - beautiful, unspoiled coastlines of spectacular sea lochs, stunning Hebridean landscapes and incredible wildlife. Spring, summer and early autumn are, without doubt, the best times of the year to enjoy Scotland’s Wild Isles.  In the summer months the days are long and the nights are short allowing even more time to enjoy the wonderful wildlife and scenery.

The spectacular Isle of Skye, the nearby Small Isles (Canna, Rum Muck Eigg), the Southern Hebridean Islands of Islay and Jura and the Outer Hebridean islands of Uist, Harris, Lewis and the Shiants are just some of the Scottish islands you can explore. You can even venture off-shore to St Kilda.

At this time of the year Scotland’s Wild Isles are at their best for wildlife sightings. See whales, basking sharks, dolphins, seals, otters, sea and golden eagles, seabirds, including nesting puffins and the unique St Kilda wren and the special plants, orchids and butterflies of the Machair of the Outer Hebridean beaches. We have even seen a breaching humpback whale! There are rock pools to explore, spectacular coastal walks and kayaking from our small ships even entering, for example, Staffa’s Fingal’s cave.

Book The Whole Boat

All of our Scottish cruises are perfect for small groups or famil ies . Groups, friends and families often charter the whole boat. Any un-booked cruise can be booked for a private charter. However, as soon as a cruise has just a single booking a private charter is no longer possible for that date - so early booking is recommended. All ages can enjoy fishing, sea kayaking, swimming, wild swimming, coastal walks, rock pooling, dinghy trips and even hoisting the sails on St Hilda.

Solo Travellers

We host many solo travellers. We have single cabins available on Seahorse II and Gemini Explorer and various cabin-sharing options in twin cabins on all four small ships.

Guest Reviews

We receive fantastic feedback from our passengers who think that our Scottish cruises and our cruising areas offer something truly unique at very good value. Take a look at our latest reviews HERE.

Our four small ships are authentic, traditional vessels: a Norwegian ferry that plyed the rough North Sea and the fjords of Norway; a cruising lifeboat that spent days at sea in the Western Approaches; a Norwegian rescue ship that worked the unpredictable waters of the North and Arctic Seas, rescuing and towing many a crippled vessel; and a sail training vessel that raced across the North Sea on a number of occasions with merchant navy cadet officers being trained under highly experienced Master Mariners. All four small ships have been modernised for passenger safety and comfort but, where possible, keeping the traditional "look" and insides in their traditional state so as to reflect the roles they once played. Many of the cabins are finished in their original hardwood and the berths have been kept as they originally were so as to keep the passengers safe in a seaway and when sleeping at night. Of course the bathrooms and heating systems have all been updated.

Me and Jonathan, had the most amazing time, on our cruise, on Emma Jane. Everything was perfect, from the ship, to the staff, to the weather, the food that Pete served, was the best we had ever eaten. Pauline worked so hard, to make everything perfect for us. Lynsey gave us all the wildlife, we could have ever hoped for, and brilliant walks. And James made the experience possible, with his expert knowledge, of where to go for the best of everything, (Including mackerel). On top of all that 9 strangers shared some amazing experiences together, and I think that all of us took more away from the cruise, than we could have ever imagined. And I know we’ll all stay in touch. It was so lovely to meet you too, and james’ mum, and daughter. What else could I say but, thanks so much. We had the best experience of our lives, and look forward to planning our next trip.

Cruise port schedule, live map, terminals, news.

Kirkwall cruise port

Region Ireland - UK - British Isles

Local Time 2024-06-11 02:08

Port Kirkwall cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Kirkwall, Orkney Island Scotland. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Kirkwall is a seaport, the biggest town (population around 10,000) and capital city of Orkney Islands. Kirkwall is located on Mainland Orkney Island, off Great Britain's northern coast. Port Kirkwall serves mainly ferries to Lerwick and Aberdeen , as well as to North Orkney islands. The company serving these routes with regularly scheduled (daily) overnight crossings is Northlink Ferries .

The town was first mentioned in a 1046 saga as the residence of Rögnvald Brusason (Earl of Orkney), who was killed by his uncle Thorfinn. In 1486, King James III of Scotland gave Kirkwall the royal burgh status. The town's name comes from the Norse "Kirkjuvagr" (meaning Church Bay).

At the town's heart stands the St Magnus Cathedral, which was established in memory of Saint Magnus Erlendsson, Earl of Orkney (1108–1117) by Earl Rögnvald Kali. Next to the Cathedral are the ruins of former Bishop's Palace and Earl's Palace. The town has two museums. The bigger (Tankerness House Museum) has items of local historical importance. Its prehistoric, Viking and Pictish collections are of international importance. The other museum (Orkney Wireless) is dedicated to the history of recorded sound and radio.

Orkney Islands cruise ship tourism began in the 1980s. The archipelago is among UK's most popular British Isles (Around Britain) cruise itinerary destinations and Scotland's most favourite ship travel destination. An average of 125 cruise ships visit Orkney annually, carrying over 100,000 passengers and ~30,000 crew.

In 2018, Viking Ocean  rated Kirkwall as "top cruise destination" among 46 seaports in Northern Europe. The rating was based on feedbacks from passengers, following company's 2018 itinerary program analysis. For season 2018, Port Kirkwall handled 140 cruise ship calls. For season 2019 were scheduled 170 calls. Around half of the visiting vessels are smaller-sized luxury ships (with max capacity  500 passengers).

"Shore excursion" options from Kirkwall include the bus tours to Skara Brae (stone-built settlement on Bay of Skaill / west coast Mainland Island, Orkney) and to Ring of Brodgar (aka Brogar - approx 6 mi / 7 km northeast of Stromness , Mainland Orkney).

Kirkwall cruise terminal

Kirkwall port has Scotland’s longest deepwater berth (at Hatston Quay). It measures 385 m (1263 ft) in length and has draft (depth) of 10,5 m (35 ft).

Hatston Quay is just outside Kirkwall, offering a complimentary bus shuttle into the town.

Stromness is Mainland Orkneys' second largest town and also offers excellent berthing for cruise liners.

Kirkwall Bay is another area used for ship anchorage.

  • Balfour Castle
  • St Magnus Cathedral
  • Earls Palace and Bishops (both are former Royal Residences)
  • Highland Park is a distillery producing finest Scotish single malt whiskey.

As we approach the Isle of Man, admire the imposing ruins of Peel Castle above the pretty seaside town that bears its name.

There is plenty to see in Peel, the 14th-century town that was once the Manx capital. Motor racing buffs will enjoy the vintage car museums, a nod to the island’s modern racing heritage. Or visit the House of Manannan to discover more about the island’s Celtic, Viking, and maritime past.

The Isle of Man is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is home to a wide range of birdlife, including hen harriers, red-billed choughs, peregrines, black guillemots, Manx shearwaters, puffins, Arctic terns, and many more.

Islay’s whisky and nature

Fire up your spirit of discovery on ‘whisky island’

Islay is the proud home of world-famous peaty single malts, but that’s far from the only reason to visit. Here, you’ll discover fascinating ancient monoliths and the enigmatic settlement of Finlaggan.

Today, Islay is a wildlife paradise, with over 200 species of birds. These include oystercatchers, gannets, and golden eagles. From its sandy beaches, you can sometimes spot dolphins and basking sharks.

Port Ellen is the gateway to three of the island’s nine distilleries. Of course, no trip to Islay is complete without a ‘wee dram’ from a famous and historic whisky producer, including Laphroaig or Ardbeg.

Wild St. Kilda

Discover the untamed beauty of St. Kilda

A visit to this UNESCO double World Heritage Site is an unforgettable experience. If conditions allow, we’ll spend the day here.

This is one of Europe’s most important seabird colonies. St. Kilda’s volcanic outcrops are home to thousands of nesting seabirds, including northern fulmars, black-legged kittiwakes, and over 60,000 pairs of northern gannets.

In 1930, St. Kilda’s last residents asked to be evacuated due to the island’s wild and windswept conditions. Explore the abandoned village and see the distinctive cleits – circular stone buildings used to store peat, eggs, and smoked puffins. Then, head back to the ship and happily indulge in more contemporary dining options.

The best things to do in Scotland with kids

Jun 13, 2023 • 8 min read

cruise to scottish isles

With inspiration for the perfect family trip, here are the best things to do with kids in Scotland © Paul McGee / Getty Images

Scotland is a stronghold of child-friendly favorites, and you’re here for superlative, soul-stirring experiences that ambush parents as much as itchy-footed kids.

Take the road north from Edinburgh — leaving behind three fantasy brick-block castles and passing through a storied countryside home to tales of giant water spirits and a humped, ancient loch monster— and, between the fairy glens and newfangled Harry Potter tradition, you’ll find yourself transported into a moody landscape ripe for a travel-bragging family adventure.

This is a country brimming with family-first cultural and wildlife encounters and a wealth of hill, loch and river adventures for bigger kids. Plus, it tastes as good as it looks — sugar-sweet fudge, tablet, shortbread, Tunnock’s teacakes and fizzy Irn Bru will fuel even the stubbornest, tantrum-throwing toddler.

Indeed, a trip to Scotland is the connoisseur’s alternative to an all-inclusive resort or theme park holiday — less a Disneyworld, more a Caledonian magic kingdom — and, at the end of it all, the reward isn’t so much the place, but the open-armed hospitality and absurdly friendly people.

Is Scotland good for kids?

In one word: yes. Traveling with children is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy (as locals say) and the combination of plenty of public amenities, wallet-friendly family tickets at attractions and short distances to travel (compared to many other kid-friendly destinations, at least) is an irresistible proposition. Then there’s Scotland’s trump card: the great outdoors. It’s a brazen, open-air playground and escapist joy, with trees for climbing, beaches for castle building and rivers, waterfalls and lochs to splash and dip toes in.

Comfort is also king. Breastfeeding in public is widely accepted and encouraged by government campaigns, while restaurants regularly have high chairs, dedicated children’s menus and kids-eat-free deals. Equally critical to know is licensing laws mean pubs have to have a special Children's License for children to be able to eat there. Check with the bar staff to be sure.

For those with little ones, a stroller or buggy is also perfect for roaming all towns and cities, even if Edinburgh’s medieval cobblestone parades take no prisoners; at times, you feel as if you’re mere moments away from a puncture. Also a non-negotiable for outdoorsy families is a baby carrier or backpack.

Perhaps the biggest factor to consider before visiting is the weather. Notoriously fickle, heavy rain and midge clouds can blot even the most glorious summer day, while a simple forest walk, picnic, or bike ride can be ruined by a carousel of conditions. A sturdy pair of shoes or waterproof jacket is no match for the lashing rain and high velocity gusts that often play peekaboo from Perth to Paisley to Portree .

Where is best in Scotland for kids?

From the galleries of Glasgow to the bike trails of the Borders to the fabulous beaches of Fife , it’s obvious why so many families carry grins as wide as the Clyde.

You’re in Scotland for the history, so start in Edinburgh with its rock-topped castle and wizard-worthy Royal Mile; equally, Stirling is a more manageable version for those with short legs. Leave for Aviemore in the Cairngorms , a mountain amusement park with plenty of adventures, then Loch Ness , where the prospect of realizing the childhood fantasy of monster hunting is only a short boat trip away. To the west, Glencoe and Glenfinnan deliver Harry Potter movie magic. And the beaches ? You’re spoilt for choice in Argyll and the Northwest Highlands, particularly on Barra, Harris and Lewis in the Outer Hebrides .

Two massive horse-head sculptures on the edge of a canal being visited by people

Best things to do in Scotland with babies and toddlers

Cruise the kelpies by canal boat .

The Kelpies , two gigantic, 30m-high (98ft) equine sculptures at the eastern gateway of the Forth and Clyde canal, deliver more than a wow factor for wee kids. Rather, they have come to embody a new-found spirit around Falkirk in Scotland’s Central Belt.

Start close by examining the almost dragon scale-plates, then head to the nearby monster-sized playground at Helix Park. Better still is to cruise from the Falkirk Wheel — the only rotating boat lift in the world — to eyeball them, pirate-style, from the water. For the uninitiated, Scottish myth holds that kelpies are water spirit demons with humongous horse heads — maybe, best not tell any younger kids that.

See a show at the world-beating Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Over the past few years, the world’s largest arts festival has had to evolve, with venues changing to become more accessible and the program for children more inclusive than ever. From master magicians and puppet dragons to balloon-bending acrobats and a soap bubble circus, this month-long cultural extravaganza every August has something for every age group, every taste, every mood, every huff.

For first-time parents, there’s no shame in being intimidated. Count around 3500 shows across 300 city-wide venues and it can be hard to know where to start. Ask around: locals rely on newspaper and digital reviews as well as word of mouth to find out what not to miss. Lastly, book ahead. It means you’ll miss the freedom of spontaneity, but this is particularly advised when traveling with younger children — especially as the most popular shows tend to sell out long in advance.

A young child stands looking out towards the water for wildlife in Scotland

Best things to do in Scotland with kids

Follow the whale trail in the hebrides .

The Isle of Mull , with its cliffs tumbling down to pogoing seas, has many of the magic properties of the west coast islands. But it is also an entry point for the Hebridean Whale Trail, a self-guided route that encourages accessible, low-impact wildlife-spotting from land. Silhouettes creep from the depths. Shadows swirl below the surface. Rolls of dark skin emerge from the water.

In total, 33 sites have been tagged for their extraordinary marine diversity and these are scattered from Mull right along the west coast, around Ardnamurchan and all the way to the tip of Lewis. For kids and adults who have never seen bottlenose or common dolphin, harbor porpoise, basking shark, or humpback, minke, fin, beaked, pilot, or killer whale, the prospect is a pure, undiluted thrill.

Feel the magic of Harry Potter

Diagon Alley is based on Victoria Street in Edinburgh. George Heriot’s School is the precursor to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Several wizards, witches and mad-eyed loons are named after those laid to rest in Greyfriar’s Kirkyard .

J.K. Rowling was inspired by the city’s magician’s hat spires, Gothic steepled schools and squiggly lanes and, just as Edinburgh is the city of Harry Potter, Scotland is a Potter fan’s dream. For the ultimate kid-friendly trip, follow The Road to the Isles towards Mallaig, stopping in Glencoe, Glen Nevis and then Glenfinnan. All were production locations for the big-screen wizarding saga and few can resist stopping to see where Harry Potter and pals rode the Hogwarts Express over the Glenfinnan Viaduct railway bridge.

For further literary inspiration, check out Dumfries . It’s home to the National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling , and where Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie found inspiration for Neverland.

A young person on a mountain bike follows a trail in beautiful hilly countryside

Best things to do in Scotland with tweens and teenagers

Go wild in the cairngorms.

The itinerary looks like this: canoeing on Loch Morlich in the morning, off-trail biking through stag-filled Rothiemurchus Forest shortly after lunch, then finishing with a trip up Cairngorm Mountain on Britain’s only summit funicular. The problem with Aviemore, the basecamp for adventures in Scotland’s largest national park , isn’t the lack of things to do. It’s having time to catch your breath.

Timing in the Cairngorms is everything, of course. In winter, skiing and snowboarding are the buzzwords, while summer is for watersports galore and autumn brings out the rutting stags — an off-road Highland safari to see osprey, black grouse and red deer has a bit more grit for the older kids.

A word of warning: Aviemore can get mobbed in summer, so book your activities in advance. For a quieter, if more expensive alternative, consider Braemar on the eastern side of the national park in Aberdeenshire .

Bike the 7Stanes

There’s no better way to pull teenagers away from their smartphones — and, possibly, out of their comfort zones — than to take them downhill biking in southern Scotland. Both the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway are wellsprings of gnarly biking trails and home to the 7Stanes , a matrix of dedicated centers including competitive hot spots Glentress, Innerleithen, Glentrool, Newcastleton and Kirroughtree.

While many of them are all about the teen- and adult-appropriate downhill roller coasters, wooded chicanes and face-slapping descents, there are plenty of easier routes for novices and kids keen to push their skills beyond the pump track.

A family with a young toddler follow a hiking trail and cross a stream

Planning tips

As easy as it is to travel with children around Scotland, a few in-the-know insider tips will certainly help you — and your budget — go the extra mile.

Traveling at the weekend? ScotRail’s Kids for a Quid promotion means tickets only cost £1 return each for up to four children for every paying adult at the weekend. Added to that, kids under five always travel free.

Many museums and galleries are also free of charge for all ages. Three standouts are the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow and V&A Dundee on the city’s river esplanade. Otherwise, plenty of attractions, activities and transport options offer discounts and savings for families.

With so many islands to explore , island-hopping by ferry is an affordable and thrilling way to see everywhere from Islay all the way to Shetland in the far northeast. A more digestible journey to Gigha, Cumbrae or Arran — from 20 minutes to less than 1 hour — is a great way to introduce toddlers to sea travel, but bear in mind Atlantic swells can make journeys uncomfortable and sailings do get cancelled. Check the forecast before travel.

Dior’s show at Drummond Castle revels in the best of Scotland’s stylish history

O n the same day that honorary Scot JK Rowling leapt to the defence of Kemi Badenoch after the latter was accused of being spiteful and toxic on social media, Dior’s Scotland show presented jackets and corsets embroidered with the words “Bossy”, “Fierce”, “Difficult”, “Feisty”…

Coincidence? Of course. These embroideries have taken weeks and were inspired by Mary, Queen of Scots’s own accomplished needlepoint, which often contained (not so secretive) political messages and covert digs at her biggest frenemy, Elizabeth I of England.

But what a timely moment to reclaim the words “bossy” and “difficult”. “How often are male politicians called ‘spiteful’?” Rowling tweeted. “And what’s the issue with her [Badenoch’s] manner, Ian? Did she fail in womanly sweetness, kindness and deference?”

Mary, Queen of Scots sure did. She also sometimes dressed as a man so that she could roam the streets unrecognised and escape the suffocating confines of her various castles and disastrous husbands.

Scotland’s tumultuous history, stunning scenery and rugged fabrics and knits are catnip to designers. Karl Lagerfeld presented a Chanel show in Linlithgow Palace more than a decade ago. Now it’s the turn of Dior’s head of womenswear, Maria Grazia Chiuri. And boy did she throw herself into the challenge, spending months researching its history and crafts, visiting its remote corners, including the Outer Hebrides, where she initiated a collaboration between Dior’s Paris atelier and the islands’ Harris tweed industry. A similar entente cordiale was brokered with Johnstons of Elgin and Le Kilt, a small label which works with manufacturers across the UK to update traditional emblems of Scottish dress.

The results made for one of Chiuri’s most stunning collections. Johnstons recoloured tartans to her specifications, which were inspired by the gorse and rhododendrons running rampant in the formal Italianate gardens of Drummond Castle, the show’s venue, and the surrounding hills: enter hazy mauves, yellow and green, as well as a crisp red and navy tartan used for slim, punk-ish trousers and corsets as well as a “relaxed” bar jacket and matching slouchy kilt.

Harris tweeds were given the maxi- or mini-kilt treatment (possibly the chicest kilts ever) and paired with knits or zippered biker jackets. The outerwear was suitably impressive too – quilted capes, fake fur chubbies and chic, swash-buckling, monogrammed canvas-lined gabardine trench coats that Burberry should be doing, but isn’t quite. Mary, Queen of Scots was present not just in the embroideries or the square necklines, puff-shouldered narrow sleeves, and flowing long dresses – some in velvet, some in a deluxe, light(er)-weight chainmail – but in puff-ball minis and corsets which clearly riffed on the doublet and hose she’d have worn on her cross-dressing excursions. Jewellery was delicate, sculpted into thorns or studded with pearls and threaded through ears and hair.

Dior has form in Scotland. Christian Dior was fascinated by the country and in awe of its fabrics. A maxi kilt and Shetland knit in this 2025 collection featured screen prints of photographs taken of the audience, models and Dior himself, taken at the 1955 show he staged at Gleneagles Hotel .

It’s impossible in the space here to do justice to the depth of Chiuri’s commitment to forging lasting working relationships with the artisans in whichever country Dior’s annual cruise shows land. “I visited Scotland many years ago, before I worked in fashion, and I found it so beautiful,” she said. “I came back with the specific idea to make a show here, it’s a very cinematic place.”

In her broad sweep of cultural references – she also acknowledged a debt to Alexander McQueen in some of the sculpted leather motorbike jackets, fluted “bondage” corset dresses, as well as to the ball gowns and checked skirt suits that Dior himself showed at Gleneagles – she proved to be a designer at the top of her game, someone who can weave powerful narratives into desirable, wearable individual pieces. And in yet more startling news, for the first time this cruise show season, the sun shone throughout.

Retracing the Beatles' steps in Liverpool is the highlight of this British Isles cruise

cruise to scottish isles

LIVERPOOL, England – Sixty-four years ago the Beatles embarked on a long and winding road toward international superstardom, ultimately becoming what many consider to be the most influential, culturally significant and celebrated band in pop-music history.

All these decades later, Beatlemania has barely missed a beat.

Nowhere is this more apparent than this city on the River Mersey in northwest England, where John, Paul, George and Ringo were born, raised and played their first gigs together.

The Beatles’ far-reaching and colorful legacy is one of the main reasons Liverpool attracts more than a million tourists each year – double the city’s population. According to a government report, Beatles-related tourism to Liverpool brings in more than $150 million annually and supports 2,500 jobs.

I recently joined the throng of nostalgia-hungry Beatles fans during a visit to Liverpool, a port stop midway through a two-week cruise around the British Isles on the 2,668-passenger Holland America Rotterdam.

Day-tripper: Seeing the Beatles sites in Liverpool in 1 day

Unfortunately, I had to cram all of my Beatles sightseeing — including visits to two museums and venues where the group honed their musicianship and the places that inspired some of their songs — into just one jam-packed day before our ship set sail for Wales.

Yes, to borrow the words of Lennon and McCartney, I was a day-tripper.

I was on a sold-out tour with 43 fellow cruise-ship passengers called “In the Footsteps of the Fab Four.” The excursion was led by John Bruce, a Liverpool musician and guide who proudly noted that he was born in the same hospital as John Lennon.

“She’s got a ticket to ride,” he quipped as a woman boarded the bus at the start of the tour. It was the first in a day full of references to Beatles songs and amusing — and sometimes poignant — stories.

John Lennon's orange glasses and the famous bronze statue of the Fab 4

We started on Liverpool’s waterfront at the Royal Albert Dock, a mid-19th-century complex of dock buildings and warehouses that also houses several museums, hotels, bars and restaurants.

At the dock a sign in front of the popular Beatles Story museum beckoned us inside to learn “the story of the band that changed the world.” It features re-creations of key locations and events in the band’s career and includes fascinating pieces of original memorabilia. There are sections on each band member’s solo career following the group’s breakup in 1970.

It was especially moving to see John Lennon’s iconic orange-tinted spectacles, which he was wearing when he wrote the 1971 song “Imagine.” Lennon was fatally shot outside his New York City apartment nine years later.

Two blocks away is the most popular selfie spot in Liverpool: a bronze statue of the Beatles, inspired by a 1963 photo of the group strolling along the River Mersey. The statue was unveiled in 2015 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the Beatles' last performance in Liverpool.

Exploring the Cavern Club and other Beatles haunts on Mathew Street

Many of Liverpool’s must-see sites related to the Beatles are clustered on Mathew Street, less than a mile east of the Beatles statue. You’ll know you’re in the vicinity when you pass the Hard Days Night Hotel, the Hey Jude Hair and Beauty Salon and the Rubber Soul bar.

Mathew Street is home to the legendary Cavern Club, where the Beatles played an astonishing 292 times between 1961 and 1963 when they surged to prominence on the Liverpool music scene.

The original Cavern Club was demolished in 1973 but reopened 10 years later at a spot 20 yards down the block, using the same dimensions and many of the club’s original bricks. The Cavern Club still hosts live music; McCartney performed there as recently as 2018.

Across the street is a statue of a young John Lennon and the Wall of Fame, which showcases 58 records from Liverpool-based artists that reached No. 1 on the U.K. singles chart. Besides the Beatles, Liverpool has produced numerous other hitmakers, including Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Searchers and Cilla Black, who once worked as a hat-check girl at the Cavern.

The Liverpool Beatles Museum, another attraction on Mathew Street, has more than 1,000 items of Beatles memorabilia displayed on three floors. I especially enjoyed seeing two of the original seats from Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a landmark concert in 1965 in front of 55,000 screaming fans. The museum is owned by the family of Pete Best, the Beatles’ original drummer who was fired by the group in 1962 and replaced with Ringo Starr.

Seeing Penny Lane and Strawberry Field in south Liverpool

After visiting Mathew Street, we drove through south Liverpool and passed by the Beatles’ childhood homes and schools. We stopped at Penny Lane, which Paul McCartney immortalized in a 1967 song that was a tribute to his Liverpool upbringing. Over the years, Beatles fans have pilfered so many of the Penny Lane street signs that the city has had to affix them to metal posts.

We also stopped at the entrance to Strawberry Field — formerly the site of a Salvation Army children's home — where John Lennon played as a child. It inspired him to write the 1967 song “Strawberry Fields Forever.”

Bruce, who has been leading Beatles tours for six years, played the two songs over the bus’s sound system — along with his own recording of “Let it Be” — while he offered his interpretation of the songs' meaning.

“I’m a musician and I have a passion for the Beatles,” he says. “When you reveal the reasons about why they wrote some of their songs, it’s incredible. Sometimes I’ve had people at Penny Lane with big tears in their eyes because it means so much to them.”

British Isles cruise on the Holland America Rotterdam

The cruise started and ended in Rotterdam, Netherlands, where the Holland America line was founded 151 years ago. The Rotterdam ship, which took its maiden voyage in 2021, is the newest addition to Holland America’s fleet of 11 ships.

Our sailing was close to capacity, with more than 2,600 passengers, about half of whom were Americans. There was also a large contingent of Dutch passengers; all of the ship’s announcements were made in both English and Dutch. Cruises to the British Isles typically run from late April through October.

We stopped in 10 ports over the course of two weeks in such places as Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency that was the birthplace of another famous pop group, the Bee Gees.

But it was Liverpool — and my pilgrimage to trace the footsteps of a group that produced so much groundbreaking and enduring music — that I’ll remember the most.

Fittingly, as our bus returned to the cruise pier at the end of the tour, Bruce ended his commentary with yet one more reference to a popular Beatles song.

“Congratulations,” he told us. “You’ve just spent a day in the life of the Fab Four.”
