Having made your way to Ushuaia, you will be met by a representative and transferred to our group hotel. This evening, enjoy a light refreshment as you meet your fellow expeditioners at a Welcome Reception. Afterwards, dine at your leisure (dinner not included).

Embarkation

This morning, please ensure your cabin luggage is fitted with cabin tags clearly labelled with your name and cabin number. Your luggage will be collected from your hotel and transferred directly to the port for clearance and delivered to your cabin ahead of your arrival on board. Please keep any valuables or personal items with you throughout the day. Enjoy free time after check-out, meeting back in the hotel lobby at 2.00 pm to commence a short sightseeing tour of Ushuaia.

Ushuaia, capital of Tierra del Fuego is located at the shores of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by the Martial Mountains giving you a unique landscape in Argentina, which is the combination of mountains, sea, glaciers and forests. On this brief introductory tour, you will visit “La Mision” neighbourhood, the old Government House, and the upper area of the city, which offers beautiful panoramic views of Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. During the excursion you will see the antique houses that belonged to the first families settled in Ushuaia. The excursion ends with a visit to the Old Prison Museum before transferring to the pier for embarkation at approximately 4.00 pm.

If you choose to not participate in the sightseeing tour, you will need to make your own way to the Prison Museum carpark by 3.45 pm to re-join the group for the transfer to the pier for embarkation.

After embarkation, you will have time to settle into your cabin before our important mandatory briefings. As the ship pulls away from port, we will gather on the deck to commence our adventure with spectacular views over Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego.

Drake Passage crossing

As we commence the Drake Passage crossing, we make the most of our time getting comfortable with the motions of the sea. Our expedition team prepare you for our first landing with important wildlife guidelines and biosecurity procedures and start our lecture program to help you learn more about Antarctica’s history, wildlife and environment.

Our wildlife experiences begin as we enjoy watching and photographing the many seabirds, including majestic albatrosses and giant petrels following our vessel. On sea days, you may can enjoy the facilities on board the vessel including the gym, wellness centre or the relaxing in one of the observation lounges.

Nearing the South Shetland Islands and the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula on the afternoon of day four, the excitement is palpable with everyone converging on one of the observation decks watching for our first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once we are below the Antarctic Convergence and are surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures. The memory of your first big iceberg sighting is likely to remain with you for a lifetime. Time and weather permitting, we may attempt our first landing in Antarctica by late afternoon.

Antarctic Peninsula and Antarctic Circle Crossing

It is almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Spotting your first iceberg and taking a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth is an experience that will stay with you forever.

Once we arrive, the western side of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands are ours to explore, and we have a host of choices available to us. Because we are so far south, we will experience approximately 18-24 hours of daylight and the days can be as busy as you wish.

Your experienced expedition team, who have made countless journeys to this area, will use their expertise to design your voyage from day to day, choosing the best options based on the prevailing weather, ice conditions and wildlife opportunities.

We generally make landings or Zodiac excursions twice a day. You will want to rug up before joining Zodiac cruises along spectacular ice cliffs or among grounded icebergs, keeping watch for whales, seals and porpoising penguins. Zodiacs will also transport you from the ship to land, where you can visit penguin rookeries, discover historic huts and explore some of our favorite spots along the peninsula.

While ashore we aim to stretch our legs, wandering along pebbly beaches or perhaps up snow-covered ridgelines to vantage points with mountains towering overhead and ice-speckled oceans below. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do participate in the activity whenever conditions allow, and of course keen polar plungers will have the chance to fully immerse themselves in polar waters – conditions permitting! The polar plunge can take place at any time during the voyage, so listen out for the announcement from the expedition team and get ready for the most exhilarating dip of your life!

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, we may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales traveling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge (open at the captain’s discretion) for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendor. Listen out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of the pristine paradise of the splendid white continent.

On this voyage, under favorable conditions, we plan to cross the Antarctic Circle, an imaginary line located at latitude 66°33′ south. This is certainly a special highlight for many expeditioners, and the moment will be celebrated with a toast on deck (conditions permitting). You have earned some boasting privileges, joining a small group of lucky adventurers who have ventured to this part of the world. As we approach The Circle, you will notice subtle changes in the landscape and in the distribution of wildlife. The waters at this time of year are rich with krill and we hope to see plenty of whales – particularly humpbacks and minkes. We also hope to enjoy the spectacle of penguins feeding their ravenous chicks.

On our way to South Georgia, we will sail cross the Scotia Sea, following the route that Shackleton and five of his men took in order to find help for the rest of their crew. On 24 April 1916, they piled into the James Caird, the most seaworthy of their lifeboats, to attempt this perilous journey to South Georgia, some 1290 kilometres (802 miles) distance. Shackleton hoped to reach South Georgia in two weeks. There he would enlist the help of the whalers to return to Elephant Island and rescue the men who had been left behind.

As excitement builds for South Georgia, catch up with fellow expeditioners in the bar, keep a close watch for marine wildlife, or perhaps hear more tales of the Shackleton story from our historian.

South Georgia

As you near the rugged island of South Georgia, spare a thought for Captain James Cook, who arrived here in 1775 and believed it to be the northern tip of a great southern continent! In fact, it is a small island only 176 km (110 mi) long, but with a 3,000 m (9,842 ft) snow-capped mountain range, some of the world’s largest congregations of wildlife and a truly fascinating human history, South Georgia is an island of incredible riches.

On approach, jagged mountain peaks rise steeply, while seabirds are often spotted soaring around the ship. You will sail along the coast, taking in the spectacular glaciated scenery. This enchanting coastline is yours to explore!

Make sure you layer up before joining Zodiac cruises around craggy coves and along the rocky coastline in search of porpoising penguins, seal haul-outs and bird cliffs. Remember to keep an eye out for South Georgia’s kelp forests—these remarkable underwater ecosystems are quite mesmerising as their fronds sway back and forth on the water’s surface.

Zodiacs will also shuttle you shore, where you can visit some of the largest king penguin colonies on Earth, take a guided walk among fur seals and elephant seals (making sure you listen to your guides and keep your distance!) and wander along pebbled streams and grassy glacial outwash plains. We also hope to visit the remnants of South Georgia’s thriving whaling stations and pay our respects to Sir Ernest Shackleton, whose incredible voyage of survival is synonymous with this island. If you have chosen an optional activity, you will have the option to do that whenever conditions allow.

We also aim to ship-cruise through fjords with towering cliffs of ancient stone, or into deeply indented bays towards dramatic glacier fronts. This is a great time to find a comfy spot in the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge to enjoy uninterrupted views of South Georgia’s majestic coast.

As we sail towards the Falklands~Malvinas, there is plenty to keep you occupied on board. Our expedition team will continue to share their wealth of knowledge about the wildlife, history and natural world as part of the onboard lecture series. You will have ample time to enjoy observing seabirds from the stern of the ship, keeping a close watch for whales and other marine wildlife, or simply enjoying the many facilities available to you on the ship.

Falklands~Malvinas

The Falklands~Malvinas comprises two large islands (East and West Falkland), with over 700 islands scattered off the coast. All but seven of these are uninhabited, with windswept coastlines, white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. These beautifully barren islands are true wildlife havens, sheltering an impressive diversity of birdlife, including the largest black-browed albatross colony on Earth. The cold, nutrient-rich waters surrounding the islands make this a prime location for spotting marine life.

There are many beautiful areas to explore across the Falklands~Malvinas, each offering a unique perspective on this magnificent archipelago. We plan to land in historic Stanley, the capital of the Falklands~Malvinas. This charming town has a distinctly British character, with terraced town houses, pioneer cottages and even an iconic red telephone box! Colorful buildings house cosy cafes, English pubs, souvenir shops, a post office and the fascinating Historic Dockyard Museum, with displays on the maritime history of the Falkland Islands, natural history and links to Antarctica.

As we sail towards Ushuaia, you may choose to spend your precious time editing photos, enjoying the onboard facilities, or attend final lectures. Celebrate the end of an unforgettable voyage with newfound friends at a special Captain’s farewell dinner.

With lectures and film presentations to complete our Antarctic experience, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the magic of the Southern Ocean and the life that calls it home. There is time for reflection and discussion about what we have seen and experienced. Disembark in Ushuaia

During the early morning, we cruise up the Beagle Channel, before quietly slipping into dock in Ushuaia, where we will be free to disembark around 8.00 am. Farewell your expedition team and fellow passengers as we all continue our onward journeys, hopefully with a newfound sense of the immense power of nature. A transfer to Ushuaia airport or to your hotel is included in the voyage fare.

Note : At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing Ushuaia prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

Sea kayaking.

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of Antarctica are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas.

Led by experienced guides, you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit.

What’s involved?

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

Required Experience

You must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.

You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a meter swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.

What about beginners up to the challenge? Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions

Fitness Requirements

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Climates & Weather Conditions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, is generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica.

This latest innovative activity option is led by our expert polar diving guides, and utilizes state of the art equipment including drysuits, gloves, hood, fins, mask, and snorkel. Passengers who take part will enjoy the opportunity to snorkel daily (weather dependent), taking delight in sheltered bays, off shore islands and secluded ship wrecks which make for spectacular wildlife viewing.

Our team of experienced guides have over 20 years’ experience and provide snorkelers with detailed briefings and best practice procedures to ensure a safe snorkeling experience.

In our inflatable kayaks, you can paddle safely among brash ice and along rocky shorelines where penguins and fur seals might be sunning themselves.

It’s a unique opportunity to remain fully immersed in your surroundings, at water level in your sturdy kayaks. You might see Adélie penguins darting around you or, perhaps, an Antarctic fur seal slipping off its rock as you glide past. Your experienced guides will look for wonderful opportunities for you to enjoy a paddle, and hopefully push you beyond your comfort zone, safely.

What’s involved

When you sign up as a paddler, you have the bonus of enjoying normal landings along with other expeditioners, plus an added paddling excursion.

In a small group of up to six paddlers, you will have a Zodiac dedicated to your group and two guides to look after you and to scout out ideal locations to enjoy a fun paddle.

When we visit the polar regions, the elements play an important role. Our Paddling program is suitable for complete beginners, and we will only offer a paddling excursion in calm conditions. Bring along your adventurous and positive attitude and you will have an unforgettable experience.

Our Paddling Activity is suitable for novices and no prior experience is required to participate. However, you must be able to swim independently for up to 25 meters and be confident in the water.

You must be able to walk on loose, uneven surfaces such as gravel or pebble beaches. You must also be able to get into your inflatable kayak at knee level. Although our Paddling activity requires no prior experience to participate, you are more likely to enjoy the experience more if you are mildly fit and undertake some regular gentle exercise at home, such as walking.

The Paddling activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and paddling equipment.

Aurora Expeditions actively monitoring developments around Avian Influenza outbreaks closely and is in constant communication with key authorities such as IAATO. We have implemented enhanced biosecurity measures for arrival in Antarctica and reinforced our onboard protocols, and our expedition team will continue to closely assess each landing site to ensure to determine any risks.

In the spirit of expedition travel, we encourage you to adopt a flexible and adventurous attitude when joining our voyages. This itinerary is a guide only and is subject to change due to weather, sea state and other conditions beyond our control.

Day 1 Arrive Punta Arenas

Arrive in Punta Arenas, where you will be met by a representative of Aurora Expeditions and transferred to our hotel. We ask that you arrive no later than 4.00 pm so that you may attend our important briefing this evening.

Please visit the Aurora Expeditions hospitality desk in the lobby between 10.00 am – 6.00 pm to collect your luggage cabin tags. Our team will confirm details regarding your embarkation day, answer any questions and provide you with information about where to dine or purchase last minute items.

Overlooking the Straits of Magellan, the city sits astride one of the world's most historic trade routes. Today, Punta Arenas reflects a great blend of cultural backgrounds, from English sheep ranchers to Portuguese sailors. It remains an utterly fascinating testament to Chile's rich history. Modern day Punta Arenas is home to many popular restaurants, and bars, offering a mix of local and international fare (meals at your own expense today).

At 7.00 pm this evening, meet your fellow expeditioners at a voyage briefing where we will reconfirm your transfer times for tomorrow, explain the procedures for your flight to King George Island and outline important IAATO regulations for visitors to Antarctica.

Day 2 Fly Punta Arenas to King George Island, Embarkation

This morning we will be transferred to Punta Arenas airport for our charter flight to King George Island, Antarctica (weather permitting). The flight will take approximately one hour and forty-five minutes. On arrival into King George Island our expedition team is on hand to greet you and to prepare you for your Zodiac transfer to the vessel. You will have time to settle into your cabin before our important safety briefings.

Note : King George Island is located at the northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula in the South Shetland Islands and is one of the most remote places on Earth. A clear sky with perfect visibility is required for safe take-off and landing. A contingency plan will be applied to your itinerary should your flights not proceed today. Your safety is our upmost priority. We apologise in advance for any delays caused due to this unpredictable situation. Please refer to our terms and conditions for a more detailed explanation.

Days 3-10 Antarctic Peninsula

It’s almost impossible to describe the feeling of arriving in Antarctica. Spotting your first iceberg and taking a deep breath of some of the most fresh, crisp air on earth is an experience that will stay with you forever.

In addition to Zodiac cruises and shore excursions, we may ship cruise some of the narrow, dramatic straits separating offshore islands from the mainland, or linger in scenic bays to watch whales travelling or feeding. This is a great time to enjoy the observation lounge or make your way to the bridge for uninterrupted views of Antarctica in all its splendour. Keep an ear out for the creak and deep rumble of glaciers as they carve their way from summit to sea. Take a quiet moment to experience the wonder of this incredible white continent.

Days 11-12 Drake Passage Crossing

Enjoy a final morning landing in the South Shetland Islands before we re-enter the Drake Passage for our return journey to South America.

With lectures and film presentations to complete our Antarctic experience, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the magic of the Southern Ocean and the life that calls it home. There is time for reflection and discussion about what we have seen and experienced. We hope you become ambassadors for Antarctica telling your family, friends and colleagues about your journey to this magical place, advocating for its conservation and preservation so that they might one day visit the region to experience what you have been lucky to see and do here.

As we approach the tip of South America, our Captain may sail close to legendary Cape Horn, weather and time permitting.

Day 13 Disembark Ushuaia

Upon disembarkation, for those continuing their travels in the region, transportation to the hotel will be arranged exclusively for guests who have booked their accommodations through Aurora or for those staying in downtown areas near the port. Expeditioners departing on flights prior to 12:30 pm will be directly transferred to Ushuaia Airport, those with flights after 12:30 pm will have the opportunity to explore Ushuaia before an afternoon airport transfer, and the transfer procedures and details will be communicated onboard before disembarkation.

Note : At the conclusion of the voyage, we do not recommend booking flights departing Ushuaia prior to 12.00 pm on the day of disembarkation in case there are delays.

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of Antarctica , the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle around brash ice and near icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

This Kayaking Program was created by kayakers for kayakers! Our program style offers the chance to develop and enhance your skills and to connect with our expert guides and your fellow Expeditioners. Participating with the small group through your voyage will minimise wasted time with briefings and equipment tryouts and maximise time on the water.

All of our Expert Guides are professional kayak guides, who have led trips around the world, specialise in the Polar Regions and have been chosen for their passion for the sport.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit .

You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.

Our purpose-built ships have been designed with the activities in mind, each equipped with dedicated space for our high-end equipment, including Kokatat dry suits, Seals sprayskirts, PFD’s from Astral and paddles from Werner and Aqua Bound.

Kayakers must be 14 years or over. A Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.
There is upper size limit in the drysuits we provide onboard. If you cannot find a suitable size within our range and you would like to bring your own, please contact our Activity Specialist to discuss in more detail.

Kayaking is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and make the most of your time in the wild and remote destinations we visit . You have the option to discuss with the guides what you want out of your trip and they will help with recommendations on when to paddle, when to go ashore and when it’s possible to do both in one outing.

Our purpose-built ships have been designed with the activities in mind, each equipr with dedicated space for our high-end equipment, including Kokatat dry suits, Seals sprayskirts, PFD’s from Astral and paddles from Werner and Aqua Bound.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often offering a combination of both kayaking and onshore landings so you won’t miss out.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

The level of experience required differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting. For all trips, a basic level of sea kayak experience is required, equivalent to that gained in a half day Paddle Australia “Intro Sea Skills” course. You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll; however, it is encouraged that you are comfortable in a sea kayak in the ocean, and are required to be able to swim, have a moderate level of physical fitness, and no medical conditions that prevent you from safely participating. We are happy to assist you with any preparation you may need or want prior to your voyage.

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. If your experience is limited, we encourage you to contact us to discuss your suitability. There is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for 15 minutes without stopping at a moderate pace, for up to three hours at a time with breaks. We encourage a moderate level of fitness and recent kayaking experience as much as possible.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12°C / 53.6°F. In the Antarctic Peninsula, and Svalbard we often paddle in sheltered locations with generally calm conditions. In exposed locations places like South Georgia, we often encounter stronger wind and more challenging paddling conditions. Your guides will be constantly searching for a way to get you out safely and enjoyably.

Temperate regions

The northern waters in Scotland, Faroes, Iceland and Norway are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

There are 20 paces available and our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac.

Kayakers must be 14 or over. Parent or Guardian’s signature is required for participants between 14 and 18 years old.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in th e astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

In our inflatable kayaks, you can paddle safely among brash ice and along rocky shorelines where penguins and fur seals might be sunning themselves.

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. When you sign up as a paddler, you have the bonus of enjoying normal landings along with other expeditioners, plus an added paddling excursion.

In a small group of up to six paddlers, you will have a Zodiac dedicated to your group and two guides to look after you and to scout out ideal locations to enjoy a fun paddle.

Our Paddling Activity is suitable for novices and no prior experience is required to participate. However, you must be able to swim independently for up to 25 metres and be confident in the water.

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Paddling activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and paddling equipment. Fares for this activity are US$640 for all applicable Antarctica voyages, or for Wild Scotland voyage: US$580, AU$800, £440 or €250.

Yes, you will be supplied with a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. You are also welcome to bring along your own 5-10 litre drybag for personal items.

Paddlers should be aged 14 or over.

Yes, but we highly recommend a waterproof camera or phone, or a good quality waterproof case. Pelican cases are highly recommended for good cameras. A 1300 or 1400 model Pelican case is well suited for this activity if your camera and lens combination fit. However, you may be able to strap a larger case onto the back deck of the kayak.

Our paddling activity is generally done in combination with a shore landing and we paddle close to shore. Your group will have a dedicated safety Zodiac, and your guide will be in constant radio contact with our ship captain and expedition leader if additional support is required.

The inflatable kayaks are made of a soft multi layer pvc plastic and are easily paddled through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Travel insurance including emergency evacuation coverage, is mandatory on all Aurora Expeditions voyages. You will need to ensure that your insurance policy covers you for your activity and any related equipment. An additional policy or premium may be required to ensure you have adequate coverage. No. Each paddling place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to ‘share’ a kayaking place as the kayaks and drysuits are individually issued and fitted for the duration of the voyage.

It is your choice how often you want to paddle. If you decide to spend more time during a landing to explore ashore, you just need to let your guide know in advance. However, we do encourage you to get out as much as you can! Please note that the activity surcharge is non-refundable and we are unable to assist you if you change your mind once on board. If you decide to fully cancel your participation in the activity during the voyage, please be aware that you will not be entitled to a refund – neither partially nor fully. Eating and drinking.

Eating and drinking in Antarctica is done aboard your expedition ship, with all meals provided for the duration of your journey. Tea and coffee, as well as soft drinks and juices, are ready to greet you when you come back from a shore landing and at meal times, while alcoholic beverages are also available, but for an additional price.

Breakfasts and lunches tend to be buffet style, while dinners are typically served tableside and usually feature three courses. The range of food is diverse, with professional chefs preparing a wide selection of gourmet dishes, and a vegetarian option is always included. Afternoon tea, with pastries or cookies, is also provided every day.

If you have any dietary requirements or food allergies, please let us know before the trip starts. If you have a more restrictive dietary requirement (vegan, gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, etc) it is likely you can be catered for. Unfortunately, we are unable to cater for a kosher diet.

There may not be any stores on the Antarctic Peninsula, but that doesn't mean you can't do any shopping. The Ocean Endeavour has its very own polar boutique equipped with every little knickknack and thingamabob you might need to help commemorate your journey to the seventh continent (think all the essentials, clothing and souvenirs).

Geography and environment

Encompassed by the Antarctic convergence (an uneven line of latitude where the cold waters of the Antarctic merge with the warmer waters of the world's oceans), Antarctica is both cold and remote, located in the Southern Hemisphere. Due to its south-polar position, the Antarctic continent is covered in ice and experiences very harsh conditions unsuitable for permanent human residency.

While plenty of animals live in Antarctica (such as various species of whale, penguin, seal and bird), there are very few humans that call Antarctica home, instead using the region as a base for research. There are no cities in Antarctica but there are several research stations positioned on the continent belonging to various countries like Russia, the United States and Australia.

History and government

Antarctica was formed around 35 million years ago and remained undiscovered until around 1820 when Russian explorers spotted the mainland. However, this may have only been the first documented discovery of Antarctica, as it's believed that Pacific Islanders may have reached the white continent in 650 AD.

There were many attempts to set foot at the South Pole in the early 20th century, so much so that it was dubbed the 'Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration', with many trying and failing until a Norwegian explorer by the name of Roald Amundsen reached in 1911. Exploration didn't stop there though with a total of 17 major expeditions launched in the following years from 10 different countries, the last one being Ernest Shackleton's last ill-fated voyage in 1917.

Antarctica isn't owned by one single country, instead governed internationally through the Antarctic Treaty system signed in 1959 by 12 countries who had sent scientists to Antarctica during and around that time. These countries included Argentina, Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

What country is Antarctica in?

Antarctica isn't part of one single country, rather it is a continent governed under a series of recognized guidelines and agreements called the Antarctic Treaty System.

What are the possible landing sites in Antarctica?

Each expedition includes stops at various landing sites around the Antarctic but when you stop at them and for how long often depends on the weather, as well as sea ice and wildlife movement.

What types of animals live in Antarctica?

While Antarctica may not be hospitable to human life, there are plenty of animal species that call the seventh continent their home. This includes penguins, whales, sea birds, seals, and more.

What is it like travelling solo on a cruise to Antarctica?

While you can't embark on an expedition to the world's seventh continent alone, you can travel solo on a group tour to Antarctica.

This means you'll still have plenty of free time to do your own thing (and use the ship's excellent amenities) but also have the comfort of knowing expert leaders are handling the pesky logistics.

Antarctica is best visited in the summer months from November to March when the weather is warmer and the sea ice has melted enough to get closer to the island shore.

What is the weather like in Antarctica?

The climate in Antarctica is the coldest one on Earth with cold summers and freezing winters. The warmest month is January with averages of around 50°F.

What do I wear in Antarctica?

You have to be prepared and thorough when packing for Antarctica due to its remote location. Make sure you bring lots of layers, gloves, sunscreen, and moisturizer among other items.

Is there internet, wi-fi, email or telephone access available on the ships?

Internet access is available on most Antarctic ships, at a cost. Alternatively, there may be a ship-based email system where you will have an email account to stay in touch with family and friends. Because of the remoteness of Antarctica, connections can be slow, so all ships charge for data used rather than time spent online. Please refer to your detailed pre-departure information for more information on Internet facilities on your ship.

Will my cell phone work in Antarctica?

Your cell phone will not work during your Antarctica cruise as the continent is still considered extremely remote and doesn't have the right telecommunication infrastructure in place.

Can my family and friends contact me while I’m on board in the case of an emergency at home?

Yes. There is a number to call the ship and you can purchase data for the wi-fi onboard, although the connection is intermittent and not to be relied on.

Experience Antarctica in all its natural majesty

Nothing quite prepares you for it. Surrounded by looming glaciers, and icebergs the size of floating cathedrals, Antarctica will fill you with wonder.

Large groups of penguins huddle on the ice floes, avoiding the cunning leopard seals that hunt them. Majestic, migrating whales glide among amazing icebergs, hunting the shoals of krill they feed on. Bird enthusiasts should look skywards to spot some of the 45 species of Antarctic seabirds that live here, such as skuas, cormorants, petrels and terns.

Here, nature is king, and we are mere observers. Our experienced Captain will continually monitor conditions to create the best possible itinerary for your adventure. You’ll spend an exciting 11 days busily exploring several of the many possible landing sites. Rest assured, each day will offer something different and thrilling. 

Crossing the Antarctic Circle and continuing well south to Marguerite Bay, we’ll explore various islands along the way. You'll join the Expedition Team on landings and ice-cruises whenever opportunities present themselves. You may even get a chance to go kayaking among the icebergs.

Back on board, the Expedition Team will continue their lectures, helping you grow in your insights into the frozen continent.

Four of Hurtigruten's explorer ships take you as close as possible to Antarctic wildlife and untouched wilderness. Each of our vessels offer a fascinating and varied schedule of landings, all designed to create unforgettable memories. MS Fram will carry only 200 guests, while MS Roald Amundsen and MS Midnatsol (MS Fridtjof Nansen from 2019) will carry 500 each. This relatively small passenger size allows Hurtigruten explorer ships to make landings in some of the most spectacular scenery of the area, following IAATO regulations. MS Fram is a category 1 vessel, offering the widest possible range of landing sites.

How Hurtigruten does landings

Completing successful landings require experience - in Hurtigruten we have over 128 years of it, and take pride in offering seamless landings to all our guests. From our tender pit - a small pier folded out on the side of the ship - you board small rubber boats that take up to 20 people. Then we take you ashore. But before this happens, we make sure to follow a few simple principles to make every landing run smoothly:

Guests are divided into boat groups of approximately 40 guests

Groups are called by name over the ship's speakers to avoid lines

Groups are put together by the Expedition Coordinator by language. Friends and family

All guests can eat whenever they want - before or after their outdoor activity. We put expeditions first, and fit your meals around them , which is what our explorer guests really love.

Once ashore, you will be greeted by the Expedition Leader or Assistant Expedition Leader at the landing site, offering you steps and helping hands to make the landing easier. Information about the landing site is provided, with tips on where to go and where to see animals. All guests are free to walk around the landing sites on their own, with the Expedition Team members nearby to answer questions or provide information. Special hikes and other excursions are always guided by experienced lecturers and team members.

Weather, wind, ice and local conditions will determine the exact nature of your programme and schedule. Safety is paramount and the ship’s captain will decide the final sailing itinerary during the voyage. Therefore every voyage is unique and all advertised routes, by the very nature of the region, can only be indicative.

Below you will find a selection of some of the possible landing sites in Antarctica depending on your voyage’s planned itinerary:

Deception Island, South Shetland Islands

One of the highlights of the South Shetlands, Deception Island is a distinctive ring-shaped volcanic caldera, a portion of which has collapsed and created a navigable opening into the flooded interior. The natural harbour within includes Whalers Bay, home to an abandoned whaling station known as Hektor, as well as a derelict British base.

Half Moon Island, South Shetland Islands

Staggeringly photogenic and blessed with some of the most spectacular Antarctic scenery imaginable, Half Moon Island is a glittering gem amongst these island treasures. Its serrated and creviced cliffs are home to a large colony of chinstrap penguins, as well as Antarctic terns, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills, Wilson’s storm petrels and several species of seals who are regular visitors to the island.

Yankee Harbour, South Shetland Islands

Early sealers in the area used Yankee Harbour on Greenwich Island as a frequent base of operations, its remarkable setting providing a natural safe haven for the sailors. Remnants of those early days can still be seen littering the shoreline, but the big draw for visitors here is the large colony of Gentoo penguins, whose numbers are estimated to be around 4,000 breeding pairs.

Cuverville Island

Situated in the scenic Errera Channel, Cuverville Island boasts the largest known colony of Gentoo penguins. The narrow Errera Channel offers a spectacular passage to and from Cuverville as icebergs become trapped and grounded in the nearby shallows. Watching from the observation decks as our navigators weave the ship carefully between the icebergs is as exciting as being surrounded by the throngs of nesting penguins onshore.

Neko Harbour

Neko Harbour with its Gentoo penguin colony lies nestled in Andvord Bay, surrounded by the mountains and high glacier walls of the peninsula. Named after a factory whaling ship from the early 1900s, Neko is one of the rare places in this area where you may land on the Antarctic mainland.

Paradise Bay

The harbour is paradise not only in name, but in splendour and scenery as well. Protected from the winds of the nearby Gerlache Strait, Paradise Harbour offers another rare opportunity for a mainland landing and some of the finest vistas the Peninsula has to offer. Here you can find the Argentine base Almirante Brown and the Chilean base Gonzalez Videla, as well as colonies of neighbouring penguins.

Lemaire channel.

This 11 kilometre long and 1.6 kilometre wide channel is one of the most beautiful passages in Antarctica. It bestows upon the traveller a glimpse into what fascinates us most about this incredibly contrasting environment; it is sublime yet imposing, delicate yet daunting, alluring yet inhospitable.

Petermann Island

Its location in the picturesque Penola Strait makes Petermann Island a great spot for iceberg- and whale-spotting and offers spectacular views across the channel to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Port Lockroy

The British base of Port Lockroy on Goudier Island was built in 1941 and abandoned in 1962. It lay empty until 1996 when it was refurbished as a museum by the Antarctic Heritage Trust. It has since become one of the most popular sites in Antarctica and offers a unique peek into life in an Antarctic base in the 1950's.

Wilhelmina Bay

The mountains and high glaciers around Wilhelmina Bay ensure plenty of dramatic scenery and sculpted ice from tiny floating pieces to large bergs. The bay is a choice feeding ground for whales and seals and therefore was a rich hunting ground for the whalers of the past.

Antarctic Sound

The huge ice shelves of the Antarctic continent give birth to mile-long tabular icebergs. The strong currents of the Weddell Sea conspire to bring these massive flat-topped bergs north into the Antarctic Sound at the north-eastern end of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Brown Bluff

Brown Bluff lies on the coast of the Antarctic Sound at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. As the name suggests, the landscape is dominated by an ominous 745 metre high cliff. The towering, rust-coloured bluff is volcanic in origin and the beach is peppered with lava “bombs”. Adélie penguins, Gentoo penguins, kelp gulls, and cape petrels can be found breeding here and Weddell seals are also regular visitors.

During the summer months temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula range between -2°C - +5 °C. In the Ross Sea it can get significantly colder with temperatures down to -20°C.

Antarctic Weather

Witness some of Earth’s most beautiful scenery in one of Earth’s least hospitable environments. Antarctica is the coldest, highest, windiest, and driest of all Earth’s continents, though it grants our cruise passengers access to many of the most dazzling sights our planet has to offer. Gray rock peaks punch out of the wind-carved snow, passing icebergs dot the dark blue waters, and wildlife abounds that can be seen nowhere else – all serving to remind us that we are truly in another world.

Along the Antarctic coasts (where we travel on our cruises) temperatures can reach as high as 10°C (50°F) during a hot summer day, and on a regular day can plummet to barely above freezing. But just because you’re in the coldest spot on Earth doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable: Our vessels are consummately designed to make your voyage as pleasant as possible. And if you’re still unsure what clothing to pack, we’ll give you all the information you need to stay warm and dry before you join us on our exploration of the Antarctic.

All the Major Cruise Lines That Sail to Antarctica, From the Cheapest to the Most Expensive

V isiting Antarctica may have been difficult just 20 years ago, but today, it’s only a matter of booking one of dozens of cruises that travel to the seventh continent. Every year during the Antarctic summer (from November to March), a variety of cruise lines take travelers to see icebergs, go kayaking, and observe Antarctica’s fascinating wildlife with their own eyes.

But there’s a catch: Not all cruises lines have the same privileges while in Antarctica. According to the rules and regulations of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), only ships with 500 guests or fewer can organize landing activities, including penguin-viewing hikes, overnight camping expeditions , kayak tours, and more. The cruise lines that are allowed to land in Antarctica are usually much more expensive than the bigger ships, so you’re going to have to weigh your options and choose your cruise line wisely.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Celebrity cruises, princess cruises, holland america, swan hellenic, lindblad expeditions, seabourn cruise line, aurora expeditions, silversea cruises, regent seven seas.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), which only started sailing to Antarctica in 2023, has only one ship making the trip to the seventh continent: the Norwegian Star. NCL sails to Antarctica between six and seven times per year as part of larger voyages in South America.

Guests traveling to Antarctica with NCL do not disembark the ship and can only take in the beauty of the Antarctic region and its wildlife from the comfort of the Norwegian Star as it sails by Paradise Bay and Elephant Island.

Antarctica cruise cost with Norwegian Cruise Line: Starting at $1,750 per person.
Can guests go on shore ? No

Celebrity Cruises has been sailing to Antarctica since 2010, with a very limited number of voyages per season. In 2026, the cruise line will offer only three cruises to Antarctica, all of which will be on board the Celebrity Equinox and will depart in January.

The Celebrity Equinox can accommodate a total of 2852 guests on board, a number that does not allow for landing on the seventh continent. Guests on board the ship will therefore only enjoy Antarctica’s dramatic landscapes from afar, but thanks to the onboard expert naturalists, they will be able to spot penguins, seals, and whales.

Antarctica cruise cost with Celebrity cruises: Celebrity Cruises’ 14-night Antarctica itinerary visiting Elephant Island, Gerlache Straight, Schollart Channel, and Paradise Bay start at $2,105 per person.

Princess Cruises has been sailing to Antarctica since 2003, and currently offers less than than 10 trips to the continent each year. Princess Cruises’ Sapphire Princess , accommodating up to 2,670 guests, is the only ship of the fleet to sail to Antarctica’s waters.

Because of the large number of passengers on board the Sapphire Princess, guests are not allowed to land in Antarctica and can only see the continent from afar. Sapphire Princess takes more passengers to Antarctica than any other ship on the IAATO list.

However, passengers don’t have to stay on board the entire time, as Princess Cruises’ voyages to Antarctica are combined with other destinations in South America. So guests can go on land and book excursions in countries like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, and Brazil.

Antarctica cruise cost with Princess Cruises: Starting at $2,619 per person

Holland America began sailing to Antarctica more than 20 years ago, but only a few of the cruise line’s itineraries include the continent. Holland America’s Oosterdam and Volendam are the only ships of the fleet to travel to Antarctica, and they only do so as part of larger South America or Grand Voyage itineraries .

When sailing to Antarctica, Holland America travels through the bays and islands of the Palmer Archipelago off the northern tip of the long Antarctic Peninsula, along the Danco Coast, and through the Antarctic Sound. Because the number of guests on board the ships exceeds 500, landings are not permitted. Atlas Ocean Voyages’ ships, which carry fewer than 200 passengers at a time, are purpose-built for Arctic and Antarctic exploration. But they are also meant to provide guests with luxury experiences, with exceptional food and service on board, high-end staterooms, a L’Occitane spa, sauna amenities, and more.

Lindblad Expeditions was a pioneer in the field of Antarctica tourism, having sailed to the white continent with citizen (i.e., non-scientist) travelers for the first time in 1966. Now, Lindblad offers eight different Antarctic itineraries of eight, 12, or more than 20 days on four different expedition ships: the National Geographic Explorer, the National Geographic Endurance, the National Geographic Resolution, and the National Geographic Orion.

The National Geographic Endurance and the National Geographic Resolution both launched in 2021. They’re built to safely and comfortably sail in the rough, ice-covered waters of the Antarctic, but also to be as sustainable and fuel efficient as possible. The ships’ designs reduce propulsion power in rough seas, as well as noise and vibrations, which creates less disturbance for wildlife.

While in Antarctica, guests can take guided hikes, paddle on kayak tours through sea ice, and go on cross-country ski excursions. On board, a slew of experts share their knowledge of geology, wildlife biology, climate science, and more with the guests.

On certain itineraries, Lindblad Expeditions offers guests the chance to skip the crossing of Drake Passage by flying one or both ways from King George Island.

Seabourn has been taking passengers to Antarctica on ultra-luxury small expedition ships every year since 2013. While every outdoor activity in Antarctica is dependent on good weather, all Seabourn sailings to Antarctica intend to land and take guests on various activities, such as Zodiac cruises around icebergs, kayak tours through sea ice, photo classes at penguin colonies, and plenty of hiking options. Hurtigruten Expeditions (HX)

England-based HX (Hurtigruten Expeditions), the world’s largest expedition cruise line, has been sailing to Antarctica since 2002. It’s now the largest operator in Antarctica by number of guests. During the 2024-2025 season, HX will sail 33 times to Antarctica, following eight different itineraries.

Three of HX’s ships sail to the seventh continent: the MS Fridtjof Nansen (a hybrid-powered ship rated the world’s most sustainable cruise ship in 2021), the MS Roald Amundsen (the world’s first hybrid-powered cruise ship), and the MS Fram.

HX offers its guests itineraries filled with outdoors activities, including Zodiac excursions, kayaking, wildlife viewing, and regular landings. Guests can participate in the cruise line’s Citizen Science program via seven different projects, such as penguins and whale research, fisheries management, and more.

Aurora Expeditions is an Australian-owned cruise line that specializes in voyages to polar regions and remote corners of the world. The company sails to Antarctica around 25 to 30 times per year during the Antarctic season, and has been since 1992.

Three of Aurora Expeditions’ ships are purpose-built to sail to Antarctica: the Greg Mortimer, the Sylvia Earle, and, starting in late 2025, Aurora’s newest ship, the Douglas Mawson. There is an average of 132 passengers per ship on Aurora’s ships traveling the Antarctica, and this very low number allows for guests to get out of the ship up to three times per day for activities like Zodiac tours, sea kayaking, ice camping, skiing, and snowshoeing.

Aurora Expeditions is a certified B-corp, meaning it practices the highest levels of sustainability efforts. Travelers can take part in its “Sustainability in Action” or Citizen Science programs, the latter of which focuses on whales, seabirds, microplastics, pollution, weather patterns, phytoplankton, polar fjord lands, and marine biodiversity.

Antarctica cruise cost with Aurora Expeditions: Starting at $10,556 per person (the Spirit of Antarctica itinerary)

Silversea Cruises began sailing to Antarctica in 2008 and is one of the most luxurious ways to visit the polar region. Each suite on the cruise line’s three Antarctica-bound ships (Silver Cloud, Silver Wind, and Silver Endeavour) has its own butler, whose role is exclusively to cater to guests’ needs. Silversea Cruises organizes around 40 sailings per year to Antarctica, more than any other cruise lines on this list.

But what makes the company stand out is the Fly & Cruise program, which lets guests skip sailing through the dreaded Drake Passage and instead fly business class to Antarctica on a chartered flight. Guests will first fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas to spend the night, then fly from Punta Arenas to King George Island, where the sailing begins. Look for cruises marked with the “Antarctica Bridge” label if that option interests you.

Antarctica cruise cost with Silversea Cruises: Starting at $11,700 per person.

Viking started sailing to Antarctica in 2022 and now makes nearly 20 trips to the white continent every year. But only two ships from Viking’s large fleet sail to Antarctica: the Viking Octantis and the Viking Polaris, known collectively as Viking’s expedition fleet. Both luxury ships can accommodate a maximum of 378 guests and are specifically built for safe and comfortable expeditions to remote and ice-covered waters.

Because of the small number of passengers onboard Viking cruises to Antarctica, landing activities are possible. Led by expert guides, guests can go on kayak, and Zodiacs excursions, or even opt for a submarine dive to go more than 400 feet below the surface.

Viking is an all-inclusive cruise lines, so boat excursions, Wi-Fi, access to spa facilities and fitness centers, self-service laundry, 24-hour room service, and specialty dining have no extra charge. Guests on Viking sailings to Antarctica also receive a keepsake Viking expedition jacket as part of their cruise fare.

The Viking Octantis and the Viking Polaris are considered the companies floating research labs, with on-board scientists working on polar research. Fortunately, guests have plenty of options for learning about and even helping with the research.

Scenic cruises makes roughly eight to 10 trips per season in its two purpose-designed ships: Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II, both of which accommodate a maximum of 200 guests.

Beyond the fact that Scenic Eclipse I and Scenic Eclipse II are specifically engineered to navigate ice-covered waters (with features like enhanced stabilizers and reinforced icebreaker hulls), the ships are also extremely luxurious. Guests get what the brand calls a “six-star experience,” thanks to roomier-than-average balcony suites, tailored butler service, a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio, the immense spa, and the state-of-the-art theater. There are also 10 dining options, plus nine bars and lounges.

When the weather permits, guests can leave the ship for hikes on land, Zodiac cruises, and kayaking or paddleboarding tours. Those who want to see the seventh continent from the air or from underwater have options via the cruise line’s two helicopters or custom submersible.

Regent Seven Seas is a fairly recent addition to the list of companies sailing to Antarctica, having only started in 2019 and making just six trips per year. In 2025, two of Regent Seven Seas’ six ships will travel to the seventh continent: the Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Mariner.

Both ships have a guest capacity in the 700s, so neither is permitted to make landfall on the seventh continent. Most of the Regent Seven Seas cruises that go as far as Antarctica are several weeks long, leaving at least three or four days to spend in the water near the continent looking for wildlife and watching icebergs.

Ice Paradise

Paradise bay is one of the most beautiful inlets in the Antarctic peninsula. Surrounded by mountains and full of icebergs made of ancient ice, that reflect against the bright blue skies.

Can you Feed Me?

Elephant seal pups are quite possibly my favorite type of seal. Usually quite plump from feeding on milk for several weeks and always hungry for more. In the summer season they can be seen waiting patiently for mom to return so they can satiate their hunger. Often seen burping, hiccuping or farting and lazily scratching here and there.

Goodbye and Good Riddance

Old fishermen’s boats sit beached inside the crater of Deception island. This is the crater of an active volcano and the former killing and processing site for thousands of whales and seals. These are the remains of a cruel and thankfully no longer allowed practice of whaling and sealing. The Antarctic treaty brought together dozens of countries to form an alliance and protect Antarctica and its waters from hunting and pollution. This treaty also helps manage tourism practices in and around the continent and keep the place as pristine as possible.

The albatross is one of the most impressive bird species on earth, able to fly for up to 13 months, and a constant friend to ship passengers as you near areas of land and mountain in the Antarctic region.

Snowy Sheathbills

The snowy sheathbill is the only landbird native to Antarctica, not having webbed feet like most if not all other birds in the Antarctic region, the sheathbill does not swim, or dive in the water for food. Living solely off what it finds on land. Finding them nearby research stations where they can find scraps from humans is quite common.

Smooth Sailings

One thing I never got used to in Antarctica is how different each and every day looked. With an ever changing scenery from weather, light and locale. It is truly a pristine and stunning place.

The Perfect Pose

Chinstrap penguins are easily recognizable for the thin black line that runs under the face. The have great numbers in the Anartic region and are one of the least threatened species of penguin. Often seen propelling themselves along the snow on thier bellies, this one slid over a few piles of poo on the way home.

A Dark History

Antarctica’s history is dark, with centuries of sealing and whaling that almost decimated the entire population of fur seals, and several species of whale. These practices went on until as recently as the 1980’s, when a moratorium on whaling was finally enacted in Antarctic waters. These ruins are what remain of one of the biggest whaling stations located on Deception island.

Obstacle Course of Icebergs

Every day and almost every moment in Antarctica offers something truly unique and different to behold. With constant changes in the light the reflections of the ice and snow and sea are always moving. No visit here would ever be the same.

In January 2025, Holland America Line will sail simultaneous world cruises of longer than 120 days for the first time in the line's history: this 124-day sailing and a 133-day "Pole-to-Pole" Grand World Voyage. The shorter 124-Day Grand World Voyage sails round-trip from Fort Lauderdale.

In January 2025, 700 guests will call Regent's Seven Seas Mariner home for its 150-night Navigate the World cruise. Holland America's 133-day grand voyage is believed to be the first-ever pole-to-pole round-trip sailing from the U.S. The voyage aboard the 1,432-passenger Volendam will sail from Fort Lauderdale to the Dominican Republic, Colombia and Costa Rica before transiting the Panama Canal. Other ports of call in South America include Ecuador, Peru and Chile, where guests will get to experience scenic cruising in the Chilean fjords. The journey also offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to cross the infamous Drake Passage and see the surreal beauty of Antarctica.

After a stop in the Falkland Islands, the ship will return to South America with calls in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. After several ports of call in Africa and the Canary Islands, Volendam sails to Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The ship will then navigate the waterways in Northern Europe, the North Cape, Iceland, Greenland and Canada, before sailing along the East Coast of the U.S. toward Florida.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.
