Halifax, Nova Scotia Cruise Port Guide
A Halifax cruise will bring you to the enchanting capital of Nova Scotia, set on one of the largest natural harbors in the world. Culturally, compact Halifax punches way above its weight. It’s packed with attractions including exciting museums, a fine art gallery, and the oldest farmers’ market in North America. You’ll also find a collection of handsome 18th- and 19th-century buildings, a long waterfront walkway, and a beautiful park.
On a Canada and New England cruise that stops in Halifax, you’ll have a chance to learn more about the naval history here, from imposing 18th-century forts built by the British to the Titanic connection. The city’s Scottish heritage is widely celebrated, too. You’ll be shown around by tour guides dressed in tartan, pointing out statues of Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott. Experience the city’s vibrant live music scene in one of its cozy pubs, where it’s fun to relax with a craft beer and a lobster roll or poutine.

Top sights & attractions on cruises to halifax, nova scotia, halifax citadel national historic site.
High atop a hill with seemingly infinite views over the city and beyond is the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site, a star-shaped fort built by the British. Explore the barracks and the guard room. Time your visit to include midday, so you can see the firing of the Noon Day Gun. True military history enthusiasts can also book a three-hour “Soldier for a Day” experience, in which you can dress in a 19th-century battlefield costume and learn to fire an antique rifle.
The Museum of Immigration
Between 1928 and 1971, Pier 21 served as an immigration hall that processed over one million immigrants hoping to start a new life in Canada. Now a museum, the space features interactive displays, moving film footage about individual stories, extensive archive material, and a replica railcar. Visitors of immigrant descent can trace their own family’s journey via ships’ rosters. You can also try the Customs Challenge to see what new arrivals would have been allowed to bring to Canada.
Peggy's Cove
Peggy's Cove is a tiny, picture-postcard fishing village on St. Margaret’s Bay along the rugged Atlantic coast, a short drive from Halifax. Peggy’s Cove is especially known for its colorful fishing boats, quaint houses, and stately lighthouse, which dates back to 1915. This brilliant white icon with a red lantern room on top is perched on wave-lashed rocks. The seafood in town is as fresh as can be, so make time to stop for lobster rolls.

Things to do in halifax, nova scotia, stroll the waterfront.
A car-free wooden boardwalk extends two and a half miles along much of the downtown waterfront area. It’s perfect for strolling, cycling, people-watching, and admiring the views across the water. Visit the Historic Properties area, which features three blocks of fine 18th- and 19th-century stone warehouses and wharf buildings. They’ve been carefully renovated and house art galleries and studios, restaurants and bars, and boutique shops.
Visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
This fascinating museum houses fascinating collections covering everything from the Age of Steam to archaeological finds from the seabed. One of the most popular exhibits is the poignant Titanic exhibition; Halifax was where the survivors were brought after the 1912 disaster, and where many of the victims are buried. You can also explore the CSS Acadia, a hydrographic vessel that survived both World Wars and the great explosion of 1917.
Explore the Halifax Public Gardens
A handsome example of a formal Victorian garden, the 17-acre Halifax Public Gardens have been open since 1867. Splashing fountains and statues are dotted among colorful flower beds, while waterfowl inhabit the ornamental ponds and 140 species of trees create leafy shade on a hot day. Come here for a picnic, to people-watch, or on a Sunday afternoon to listen to live music at the bandstand. From August onwards, visit to see the dazzling displays of dahlias.
Top Food & Drink in Halifax
Seafood plays an important part in Halifax’s cuisine, as does the city’s Scottish heritage. Look out for creamed lobster, crab cakes, oysters, fish and chips, and East Coast chowder, a creamy stew rich in fresh scallops, haddock, and shrimp. You’ll find the Canadian staple of poutine—fries topped with cheese curds and gravy—everywhere, although Rappie pie may be less familiar. This Nova Scotian comfort dish comprises grated potatoes served with a rich broth with chicken or seafood adding flavor.
Scottish immigrants brought with them a strong culture of brewing, and Alexander Keith’s Brewery is a great place to sample fine craft beers. You’ll also find Nova Scotia wines and ciders produced in the orchards, and Annapolis Valley vineyards near the city. If you’re in the city on a weekend, head for the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, where artisan producers sell everything from local cheese to organic fruit and fresh oysters.
Culture & History of Halifax
Before it became a major commercial port, Halifax served as a fishing spot for the Mi’kmaq, who referred to the Halifax area as “Jipugtug,” which meant “the biggest harbor.” French settlers arrived in the 17th century, establishing the colony of Acadia and disrupting the peaceful existence of the Mi’kmaq, followed by the British who in 1749 established a colony and numerous fortifications here. Tens of thousands of immigrants were brought across the Atlantic from Ireland and Scotland. Other immigrants came from Germany and the United States.
In 1912, Halifax’s history became inextricably linked with the Titanic disaster, as this is where the survivors and the dead were brought from the scene. Many of those who perished were laid to rest in three of the city’s cemeteries. Halifax endured further disaster in 1917 when, on December 6, two ships collided in the harbor, creating a catastrophic explosion that killed 1,800 and destroyed several buildings.
Today, Halifax is a thriving container and cruise ship port, with a rich culture of music, pubs and cafés, and year-round festivals. It’s especially popular as a cruise destination in fall when the trees in the surrounding countryside are sporting their dazzling colors. You’ll see signage in English and in French here; Canada is officially bilingual, but English is the main language spoken in Nova Scotia.
Halifax Cruise Port Facilities & Location
Cruises to Halifax, Nova Scotia, dock at the Port of Halifax. Bagpipers often provide a lively welcome to cruise ships. After you depart your ship in the cruise port, you’ll walk down covered hydraulic gangways that take you to Pavilion 20 or 22. You’ll find a visitor information center in Pavilion 22, as well as souvenir stalls and restrooms. Right outside is where you’ll meet tour buses and can find taxis. From here, it’s a short walk to the waterfront attractions in Halifax and other downtown sights.
Transportation in Halifax
Getting around Halifax is easy. You can walk along the waterfront right from the cruise terminal, or rent a bicycle. Taxis wait outside the terminal and rideshares operates here. Metro Transit runs bus routes throughout the city and beyond to Bedford, Dartmouth, Halifax, Sackville, Timberlea, and Cole Harbour. The ferry is a great way to get around and enjoy views of the skyline. It takes 15 minutes to cross from the waterfront to Dartmouth and is an enjoyable and affordable way to travel like a local and take in the scenery.
Shopping in Halifax
If you’re in Halifax on a Saturday, you can visit the oldest-running farmer’s market in North America, which is located on Lower Water Street. Pick up souvenirs from here including handmade sea glass jewelry, tins of maple syrup, local wines, and Nova Scotian knitwear.
Otherwise, great things to buy include local art, pottery, Amos pewter, crystal, and beauty products. Packs of cherry-flavored lobster-shaped gummies are a fun and novel trinket to take home for kids.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
The currency in Halifax is the Canadian dollar. You’ll find plenty of ATMs around the city. Credit cards are also widely accepted in Halifax, though check with the business or taxi driver beforehand if you’re not sure.
Tipping for services is common in Halifax and is expected for dining or taxi rides. The tipping culture in Canada is similar to the United States. A tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill is appropriate for good service in a restaurant, and 10% to 15% for taxi rides.

Get to Know Carnival Venezia
It's a long way from Venice to NYC, but Carnival Venezia thinks the two could be next-door neighbors. This ship is now sailing from its Big Apple homeport... and already has big Port Canaveral plans for the winter/spring 2025 season! What can you expect to find in this ship? Well, there’s more than a little Italy in this one — that’s why we’re calling this new type of cruising Fun Italian Style ™ . It starts with the Venice-inspired atrium Piazza San Marco , the onboard flavor and flair continues at the three-course Marco Polo and Canal Grande Restaurants , La Strada Grill ™ and its Italian street food, plus fusion spots Tomodoro ™ (Mexican-Italian, yum!) and Guy’s Burger Joint (new burgers with Italian flavors — also yum!). And in authentic ristorante style, the elevated Italian of Il Viaggio . Sip well at bars that each specialize in their own thing: complex and sophisticated cocktails at Amari ™ , bubbly stuff (plus snacks and coffee) at Frizzante ™ , frozen everything at Rococó ™ and fine Italian wines at Carnevale Bar & Lounge ™ . There’s great entertainment at the red-velvety Teatro Rosso and its Playlist Productions ™ shows, plus Gondola Lounge was inspired by the famous canals of Venice. Terrazza staterooms are a whole new way to stay in style and comfort, all in a great location close to amenities like the exclusive Terrazza Carnevale , a private terrace deck made for lounging, sipping and fun, day or night! There’s also a lot of the classic Carnival fun that repeat cruisers ( hey there!) know and love. Deliciously familiar flavors come from spots like Bonsai Teppanyaki ™ and Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse ™ , while celebration spots include Piano Bar 88 and Serenity Bar , and relaxation happens at Cloud 9 Spa ™ and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat ™ . For the kids, there’s spaces just right for their age like Camp Ocean ™ , Circle “C” ® and Club O2 ® . And outdoors, get ready for a very splashy WaterWorks ™ and SportSquare ™ featuring a ropes course, jogging track, mini golf and outdoor fitness center. So as we were saying… hey, we’re cruising here! Carnival Venezia and all this Fun Italian Style sailing now from NYC. Andiamo!

15 Hours in the Halifax Airport: A Blizzard-Bound Food Diary
By J.R. Patterson
This article is part of our airport food survival guide , which includes tips and tricks—even a hot take or two—that challenge the notion that airport meals are always dull, overpriced, and tasteless.
We were flying from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland, and the first fringe of the blizzard had already coated the ground. My friend and I are prudent fliers and had arrived at the airport early, giving ourselves three hours before the flight—plenty of time to check-in, plenty of time to wait, plenty of time to chew our fingernails in nervous anticipation. Our promptness was an attempt to alleviate, as much as possible, the inevitable feeling in airports that the world is against you.
But there's much you can't prepare for, and once you enter an airport you become subject to its rules; life happens in an alternate reality from the rest of the world. When that blizzard led to what ultimately totaled 15 hours in delays—made more painful by the extra time we had allowed to catch our flight—we found that the only way to pass the time was by eating our way through it, exploring everything the airport offered us as new announcements crackled over the loudspeakers.
4:45 p.m.: Burnside Brewing Toller Gold Lager
As we watched the storm brew, wary of our still-on time departure, we sought comfort at one of the airport restaurants, the Firkin & Flyer Pub . There, we nursed pints of Burnside Toller Gold while we looked alternately from the whitened window to the departures board.
5:15 p.m.: Lobster roll
The first delay came sooner than expected, pushing us back an hour, no more. It was manageable, though, by staying at the Firkin and working through some comfort food.
It was my first time on the Canadian east coast , and food hadn’t been the focus of my visit. I’d missed out on much of the local fare: lobster, râpure (a potato casserole), potato skins, blueberry grunt (cobbler), seafood chowder, deep fried Mars bars. As I was saving cod for our destination of St. John’s, all I’d had in a local sense was a late-night Halifax Donair (cousin of the döner), the taste blurred in equal parts by a smothering, sweet milksauce, and the effects of Annapolis Valley white wine.
I opted for the lobster roll, my friend the fish and chips. His sea critter came atop faux newspaper; mine came with a creamy lemon beurre blanc that turned the hanks of claw meat into something divine. The meal was enough to distract us from the buildup of claggy snow against the window, from the blinking panel of delays, from the growing sense of frustration that was in the air around us.
6:30 p.m.: Potato skins
Around the time our original flight would have started boarding, I joined the crowd staring into the departures screen. We were still delayed by a few unlikely hours. “It’s comin’ down some bad out there,” said a man at my side. I asked him about our chances of takeoff. His answer was an inhaled shilly-shally. “Can’t rightly say. But looks none too good.”
I returned to our place at the Firkin & Flyer pub, which at that point was our foxhole in the war zone, as other delayed travelers piled up. Also piling up were plates and glasses. We’d decided to run the Firkin’s gamut of Nova Scotia brewing: Tatamagouche ales, Big Spruce stout, 2 Crows IPA, Garrison sour ale, Propeller pilsner. And to help the medicine go down, potato skins: Nova Scotia’s answer to nachos, that replaces tortilla chips with slices of potato and doubles down on the jalapeño. Susan, the waitress, had become one of us, a traveler in-kind, making tracks across the incredibly busy pub.
At this point, an announcement was made. No arrivals would be coming in. And nothing would be going out, nothing at all: the highway had been closed. We were snowbound.
9:30 p.m.: Fried pepperoni
After the beer, and a round of burgers, we must have been looking glum: Susan came by with a plate of fried pepperoni. We’d been trying to eat our way through to the other side of delay—the side where movement is bodily impossible. But this pepperoni wasn’t ours, and we shook our heads at it.
“On the house,” she said. She was on her way to another table, two plates of burger and fries balanced on her one forearm, her other hand on a chucked hip. “My granny used to say ‘Feed a cold, starve a fever.’ Well, we’re feeding cold here tonight. Cold people!”
That was Nova Scotia : accommodating, ready to commiserate in any circumstance, particularly the bad times. The peninsula was a confluence of Indigenous Mi’kmaq people, and Black Refugees from the United States, Acadian, and Gaelic cultures; a shared history of hardship formed the basis for a strong sense of community. And a snowstorm might be major, but it was nothing new. Not like the time Dan, from the next table over, dug his truck out from under six feet of wet-pack snow. Or the blizzard in which Silvia, also flying to St. John’s, had lost power to her Musquodoboit Harbour home, and decided to invite her neighbors over to eat all the ice cream in her freezer before it melted. “I know I could’ve just put it outside,” she said. “But where’s the fun in that?”
5:00 a.m.: Deep-fried Mars bar
We kipped on the airport floor, our luggage around us as both bedding and a protective shield. We slept fitfully, the sleep of the overdue and the overindulged. I woke up in the darkness of pre-dawn, but in the working light of the tarmac, I could see the snow had stopped. The ground crew was already clearing the path for our exit.
We were still keen on St. John’s, of course, but there were other alternatives: Susan’s place, or Dan’s, or Silvia’s, all of whom had offered beds and a hot meal “if things went looney.”
The Firkin & Flyer was just opening, a few shadows already bent over eggs and coffee. I needed some of that myself, but there was something else, something sweeter, that could perfectly cap that endless last day in Nova Scotia. Under any other circumstance, a deep-fried Mars bar at 5:00 a.m. would have been inexcusable. But this was just dessert at the end of a very long night.
8:00 a.m.: Departure
We arrived in St. John’s late for our appointments, but happy to have arrived at all. After a few days and even more meals in the city—cod tongues, salt fish with drawn butter and a side of brewis (hard bread), and sweet toutons (fried bread dough)—we prepared to leave. The forecast wasn’t good; another blizzard was coming across the Gulf. We didn’t mind. Another delay was just just another series of opportunities.

An ‘Extremely Dangerous’ Hurricane Beryl Grows to a Category 4
Beryl became the earliest in a season a storm has strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane in the Atlantic.

By Judson Jones and Aimee Ortiz
Judson Jones is a meteorologist and a reporter for The Times.
Beryl developed into a record-breaking Category 4 hurricane on Sunday as the earliest in a season a storm has reached that strength as forecasters warned it would continue to rapidly intensify while moving west toward the Caribbean Sea.
Before Beryl, the record earliest Category 4 hurricane was Hurricane Dennis on July 8, 2005.
The first hurricane of the 2024 season, Beryl is expected to bring “life-threatening winds and storm surge” to the Windward Islands, southeast of Puerto Rico and north of Venezuela, the National Hurricane Center said on Sunday.
By Sunday afternoon, sustained winds were reaching 130 miles per hour, forecasters said, making it an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane.
A hurricane warning was issued for Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and the island of Tobago. The island of Martinique was under a tropical storm warning, while Dominica and Trinidad were under a tropical storm watch.
Life-threatening winds and storm surge were expected in the Windward Islands starting early on Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center said on Sunday morning .
Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean are now twice as likely to grow from a weak storm into a major Category 3 or higher hurricane within just 24 hours, according to a study published last year .
Devastating winds from Beryl will occur where the eye wall, the area that surrounds the eye of a hurricane, scrapes across the islands. Across the higher elevations of the hills and mountains of the islands, the winds might be even stronger.
Beryl is the third earliest major hurricane to ever form in the Atlantic, according to Philip Klotzbach, an expert in seasonal hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University. The only hurricanes to have formed earlier in a calendar year were Alma on June 8, 1966, and Audrey on June 27, 1957.
Both made landfall on the U.S. coastline in the Gulf of Mexico: Alma near St. Marks, Fla., and Audrey near Port Arthur, Texas.
Beryl became a tropical storm late on Friday when its sustained winds reached 39 miles per hour. At 74 m.p.h., a storm becomes a hurricane.
Here are key things to know about the storm.
Swells created by Beryl are expected to reach the Windward and southern Leeward Islands by late Sunday, forecasters said, and are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
The storm is expected to cross the islands of the eastern Caribbean as early as Sunday night before traversing the central Caribbean Sea through the middle of the week.
Three to six inches of rain, hurricane-force winds and dangerous storm surge are possible in the eastern Caribbean Islands, including Barbados, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines Sunday into Monday.
Countries prepare for Beryl.
Dickson Mitchell, the prime minister of Grenada, said that the country will be under a state of emergency starting at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
“This is necessary to safeguard your life, to safeguard your limb, to safeguard our collective security and property,” he said.
Except for the police and essential workers, “everyone is expected to be in their homes or in a shelter,” he said.
In a national address on Sunday, Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, urged residents to take the storm seriously, saying that many buildings could lose their roofs.
“This is a major hurricane,” he said. “There are some persons who are hoping for the best and we must all do that. But we all have to prepare for the worst.”
The prime minister ordered that people remain where they are from 7 p.m. Sunday. Emergency shelters are set to open at 6 p.m. on Sunday. In Barbados, Grantley Adams International Airport said that it would close at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
This hurricane season is expected to be busy.
Forecasters have warned that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could be much more active than usual.
In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted 17 to 25 named storms this year , an “above-normal” number and a prediction in line with more than a dozen forecasts earlier in the year from experts at universities, private companies and government agencies.
Hurricane seasons produce 14 named storms, on average.
The seasonal hurricane outlooks were notably aggressive because forecasters looking at the start of the season saw a combination of circumstances that didn’t exist in records dating back to the mid-1800s: record warm water temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the potential formation of the weather pattern known as La Niña.
When it is strong, La Niña typically provides a calm environment in the Atlantic. This allows storms to develop more easily and to strengthen without interference from wind patterns that might otherwise keep them from organizing.

Suri Cruise is officially a high school graduate!
The daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise celebrated getting her diploma from LaGuardia High School on Friday with her mom by her side.
In photos and video obtained by Page Six, she could be seen ringing in the milestone moment by snapping pics with Holmes and a friend in New York City, where she resides.
The teen was also photographed animatedly hugging another recent graduate.
Suri, 18, looked thrilled as she posed with Holmes, 45, for photos outside a brick building before heading into the United Palace Theatre, located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan.
She rocked a dainty white dress under her red graduation robe, and paired the ensemble with white sandals that had floral embellishments on them. Her brunette hair was styled down.
Holmes, meanwhile, opted for a matching set that consisted of light yellow pleated pants and a collared long-sleeve shirt.
Suri’s father, Tom, was not present at the special event, as they have been estranged for most of her life. He instead attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in London .
It was even revealed in the teen’s graduation ceremony pamphlet that she goes by “Suri Noelle” and seemingly does not use her famous dad’s last name.
Suri is expected to attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the fall.
On Tuesday night, she looked all grown up as she headed to senior prom with her friends and a brunette date, who was seen holding her by her waist.

Suri opted to wear a ’90s-inspired floral gown, which featured a bustier top and maroon piping.
She channeled her mom with her brown hair styled in half-up, half-down.
The brunette beauty is Holmes’ only child. Since the “Dawson’s Creek” alum’s split from Tom in 2012, she has not remarried.
