1. Bridge of Lovers in Ayia Napa

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Love Bridge Cyprus

Bridge of Lovers is probably the most famous rock formation in Cyprus! It has the looks, it has the name, it has the atmosphere! And it is very easily accessible and looks good at any time of the day!

Bridge of Lovers is a beautiful natural rock formation on the South coast of Cyprus right next to Ayia Napa resort town. Read more about the most iconic and unique rock formations in Cyprus here !

2. Millomeris Waterfall in Troodos mountains

Waterfalls in Cyprus - Millomeris Waterfall

This is the waterfall you can visit any time of the year, any time of the day. It is easily accessible having a parking lot just 150-200 meters from the waterfall.

The waterfall itself is inside a mountain and therefore has this mystical atmosphere around it. Like a hidden gem that almost doesn’t want to be found!

If you are brave enough, you can actually have some swimming photos taken here, because it is not too deep and very suitable for such photos.

Beware tho, that the waterfall is very popular. To enjoy some alone time, come here early! Read more about the most amazing waterfalls in Cyprus here !

Location: Millomeris Waterfall

3. Aphrodite’s Rock / Petra tou Romiou

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Aphrodites Rock Cyprus

This place doesn’t ask for any explanations! Beautiful rocks standing in the sea at the shore. Said to be the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite, it attracts many tourists.

You can actually climb the biggest rock. There is a parking lot next to it as well as a wide beach for everyone to enjoy! it is one of the best places to watch the sunset in Cyprus as well as a perfect place for a picnic.

Location: Petra tou Romiou

4. Avakas Gorge

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Avakas Gorge Cyprus

Avakas Gorge is one of the most unique places in Cyprus . It is a deep and narrow gorge that follows a riverbed. This particular spot with a boulder stuck in the gorge above my head is amongst the most famous Cyprus Instagram spots.

It is located less than 2 kilometers inside the gorge, so follow the trail and get the photo! You will definitely not miss this spot! However, the accessibility of this place depends on the weather.

During more rainy and harsh weather (usually in winter or spring) the path could be dangerous, so check the weather forecast before heading there. A little rain won’t hurt you, tho!

Location: Avakas Gorge

5. Tombs of the Kings in Paphos

Tombs of the Kings located in Paphos city is a former underground necropolis. It sounds like a strange place for sightseeing, but it is one of the most unique places to visit in Cyprus.

And it is just the place to go to get some of the most unique Paphos Instagram spots! The tombs are carved out of solid rock and reminded me of history lessons at school when the teacher showed pictures of ancient Egyptian funeral customs.

This place has opening hours and an entrance fee – see more information about Tombs of the Kings here . When entering the territory, you will be given a map (or you can take it yourself at the entrance) with all the tombs marked with numbers.

There are only three underground tombs with columns, so go directly to those if you want a photo like this. The one in the photo is marked as Tomb 3. This was one of my favorite photo spots in Cyprus!

Location: Tombs of the Kings

6. Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa

Nissi beach in Ayia Napa Cyprus

What is so interesting about a beach? Well, if you have been to Cyprus, you will know, that most of the coastline of Cyprus is rocks, cliffs, and stones. Most parts are not accessible.

But only a couple of actual beaches have sand – some have pebbles, there is Governor’s Beach with black sand, and some have yellow sand, but there is this unique Nissi beach with white sand and amazingly clear and shallow water.

It is the best place to go with kids or if you don’t want to fight waves while swimming. Besides, there is a small island next to the beach, where you can walk to. Although the beach is in a resort and normally is very popular, I still recommend going there. Outside the most crowded hours at least.

Location: OPEN MAP!

7. Sea caves in Cape Greco

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Sea Caves Cape Greco Ayia Napa Cyprus

This is probably the most famous hole in the rock in Cyprus. Many people take pictures inside it and it can be very crowded, but you can always go there in the morning to get some alone time.

You will see many sea caves in Cyprus, but most of them are at sea level and are difficult to access. This spot is actually above sea level and you can easily access it without getting wet. A nice place for some unusual photos!

8. Edro III shipwreck

Sea Caves Peyia Cyprus

Probably the most famous shipwreck in Cyprus. Other shipwrecks are either on the bottom of the sea or further into the sea.

Although it is not allowed to go inside the ship, it is so close to the shore, that you can see everything. How often do you get to see a shipwreck so up close? This place is very easily accessible, as you can park your car next to the beach.

9. Mitsero Red Lake

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Mitsero Red lake in Cyprus

Mitsero Red Lake is one of the most unique places in Cyprus. How often do you get to see an actual red lake? Note – the red color will be visible only on a clear sunny day. Otherwise, the red color won’t shine as bright.

Why is the lake red? The lake is toxic due to high acidity levels and no life living there, so I don’t recommend going too close to the edges or to the water. There is a fence, but you can easily access the area and see the lake.

Location: Mitsero Red Lake

10. Venetian bridges in Troodos mountains

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Venetian bridge in Cyprus

One of my favorite Cyprus Instagram spots is the iconic Venetian Bridges! Sitting alone on a medieval stone bridge sounds like a cool idea to me! You will find many Venetian bridges in Cyprus’ Troodos mountains.

The bridges were built during the Venetian rule in Cyprus island in the 15th and 16th centuries and today they serve for…well, some nice photos and for a place to relax in nature!

The biggest of the bridges is the Tzelefos Bridge, however, it is extremely popular among locals and tourists. It is very difficult to catch some alone time there. We went twice to Tzelefos Bridge and it was just like we were in a parking lot at a rock concert.

But some 3.5 kilometers further is another Venetian bridge – smaller, but beautiful. It is called Elias Medieval Bridge. If you see large crowds at Tzelefos Bridge, I recommend going straight to Elias Bridge just a couple of minutes further!

Location: Tz elefos Bridge – Elias Bridge

11. Madari Fire lookout station in Troodos mountains

Madari Fire lookout station Troodos mountains

During the day this is one of the most beautiful hiking places in the Troodos mountains, but during the evening it turns into the most special place for watching the sunset you can have.

Madari Fire Lookout Station is a building on a 1613-meter mountain and offers you amazing views over the Troodos mountains as well as a glimpse of Northern Cyprus and its Kyrenia mountain range.

There are a couple of other peaks around the station, so you can explore them as well. There are many benches to sit on and have a picnic with unforgettable views. And there are trails in every direction to walk to and get some nice photos.

Probably the best part is that you can actually drive your car up to the top and park it a couple of meters from the station. Read more about the most amazing nature hiking trails in Cyprus .

12. Akamas peninsula, top of Moutti tis Sotiras

Akamas peninsula Cyprus

This is the highest you can get at the Westernmost part of Cyprus – the Akamas peninsula. There are many nature hiking trails like Aphrodite’s trail, which leads to the top of Moutti tis Sotiras peak.

It is a 370-meter cliff with amazing views over the whole peninsula, the sea, and the Troodos mountains behind you. A perfect picturesque place to have a picnic and enjoy nature. The climb to the top can be demanding, but it is worth the effort!

And you will get the desired picture from the trip as well as some unforgettable memories. It is a 7.5-kilometer (4.6-mile) trail, so be prepared to dedicate a couple of hours to this adventure!

13. Aiva Natural Arch in Peyia

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Prestos beach Cyprus

Who else is a fan of natural arches? Isn’t it amazing how nature can form them in such a beautiful way? Prestos Beach and Aiva Natural Arch are some of the most stunning seaside areas in Cyprus. Sometimes it felt like I was on another planet!

The rock formations there are crazy and I really recommend you to explore this area. There is a parking lot at the end of the street uphill from Prestos Beach and a trail down to the shore.

The walk downhill can be quite steep, but take your time, because it is worth it! And grab some snacks, because you will probably want to sit there and take in what you have seen!

14. The abandoned Tseri airplane

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Abandoned airplane in Tseri

Tseri airplane has become more popular on Instagram. Although the airplane has been lying there for quite some time, people started to post more and more pictures of it and it became more popular.

There is absolutely nothing else to see around, but if you are into airplanes or have never seen an abandoned aircraft, then follow the link to find its exact location!

Location: Tseri airplane

15. Stairs of Love in Lympia

Instagram spots in Cyprus: Love stairs in Lympia Cyprus

Stairs of Love sound just wonderful, right? And they look even more wonderful. These colorful stairs are a popular Instagram photo spot for locals because not many tourists stop in Lympia and not many tourists know about the stairs. However, if you are a local and haven’t been there, here is the link to the exact location of the stairs.

Best Instagram Locations in Cyprus [2024]

Photo of author

It may have been Instagram that attracted you to Cyprus in the first place.

Or perhaps you’re looking for gorgeous Instagram locations in Cyprus for your upcoming trip.

Whatever the case may be, Cyprus offers plenty of breath-taking photo opportunities pretty much at every turn.

Above all, a variety of gorgeous landscapes contrast perfectly with the buzz of cities and charming little villages scattered around the Troodos Mountains.

Before we dive into the list, first things first: Cyprus is a popular tourist destination and therefore very busy in the season.

For your chance to get the best photos, aim to be at your chosen location before sunset or sunrise. Beach photos during the day are almost impossible to do without other people in the photo.

If you absolutely must do it during the day, drive down the coastline to find a more remote beach with plenty of space for posing.

Cities and villages tend to be less crowded during the day when it’s too hot.

For your best chance to explore all that the island has to offer, definitely consider renting a car .

With that out of the way, let’s dive in!

Table of Contents

1. Fig Tree Bay, Protaras

One of the most popular beaches in the area, Fig Tree Bay certainly lives up to its reputation of looking more like a Caribbean paradise than a Mediterranean island.

The beach stretch itself is not long, so it does get crowded very fast.

To get your best snaps without other people in the image, head there early in the morning (best before sunrise) to capture gorgeous light and an empty beach.

If you’re staying in a hotel in the city, it’s easier to get yourself to the spot without having to drive a long time to get there.

2. Petra Tou Romiou, Paphos

Another place that’s probably already on your itinerary.

Petra tou Romiou is located just off the main highway between Paphos and Limassol, with easy access for parking.

In summer, the sun sets almost right behind the rocks and most tourists stay there during the day, so at sunset, it tends to be less busy.

No matter how tempting, it’s forbidden to climb on the rock itself and I wouldn’t recommend it. I’ve seen lots of people taking silly risks just for a photo from the top of the rock, and it’s certainly not worth it.

Just further down the beach path is a short hiking route that will take you up to the hill to the gorgeous viewing point pictured below.

My photos were taken during winter , so the sunset was further away from Petra tou Romiou, but in summer it’s almost directly opposite the rock.

cyprus coastline

3. Cape Greco, Protaras

Cape Greco is a national park at the edge of Protaras and also one of the popular tourist hot spots.

If you’re not ready to throw yourself off the rocks into the crystal clear waters, it’s fun just to sit there and watching people do exactly that.

The white-washed rocks provide gorgeous contrast with the colour of the water and at sunset, the sky turns into shades of pink and purple.

For a bit of fun, rent a quad bike to get there and go wild.

4. Akamas Peninsula, Paphos District

This must be my favourite spot for sunset photos – I used to do a lot of sunset picnics in here as it’s about 30 minutes drive away from Peyia (close to Paphos).

No matter what time of the year you arrive, it’s pretty much empty.

The steep cliffs make a wonderful viewing point to watch the sunset and at each turn provide unique photo opportunities.

If you drive further into the peninsula, you can get to Lara Beach or Blue Lagoon for even more spectacular views.

sunset picnic

5. Sea Caves, Ayia Napa – Peyia

Probably the most photographed spot on the island, the sea caves near Ayia Napa are a draw for thousands of tourists each month.

Naturally formed caves in white-washed rocks provide the perfect photo frame that’s been so frequently captured on Instagram.

If you find yourself on the other side of the island in Paphos , you don’t have to despair – although less know and perhaps also impressive, there is an area with sea caves also near Peyia (pictured below).

Get there in time for sunset and wait for nature to do its magic.

6. Blue Lagoon, Akamas Peninsula

Similar to Fig Tree Bay, the other side of the island has also a piece of Caribbean charm – it’s called Blue Lagoon .

Easy to access with a boat from Latchi, or for the more adventurous souls – with a quad bike from the shores.

The bay is usually filled with big and small boats that park here for a few hours, so it fills up fairly fast.

There is no long stretch of beach around it, just a few sandy spots to stretch your feet.

For photography options, it’s better to approach from the coastline and park your camera just over the top of the cliff.

7. Paphos Old Town

If you’re in for a bit of a city vibe with a lot of charm, Paphos Old town is the place to be.

Cute little tavernas and coffee shops stretch along the narrow streets, shaded under trees and away from the busy roads.

Even though a lot of the buildings still look like a set of a horror movie, there’s been a lot of work done in the old town to bring its old charm back.

Find gorgeous street art, get lost in the bazaar market area, and admire the views towards the coast from high up.

Head to Muse Cafe Restaurant for dinner to enjoy breath-taking sunset views along with delicious food.

8. Sea You Beach Bar (& Other Beach Bars) – Paphos

Also known as the best place to watch the sunset in Paphos, Sea You Beach Bar is just outside of Kissonerga village, on your way to Coral Bay .

Loved by locals and tourists alike, this place has boho vibes written all over it.

If the decor wasn’t enough, take a few steps and you will find yourself right at the beach.

At sunset, the place turns into a sea of mobile phones trying to capture the best sunset photo. Make sure you book a table on the edge of the restaurant to get the best photo spot.

Just a few minutes’ drive away towards Paphos is another gorgeous spot – Vardas Beach Restaurant – while the food is nothing to be excited about, they too are right on the beach with stunning views.

9. Troodos Villages

Away from the tall rising buildings, crowded beaches, and flashy hotels, you will find small old villages dotted around the side of the mountains.

Not only do they provide the perfect escape from the summer heat, but also the perfect photography backdrop.

Some of the most photogenic include Omodos (which has a winery and a monastery), Platres, Kalopanayiotis, and Kakopetria (last one most popular by locals).

omodos cyprus 1 10

10. Nicosia Old Town

Nicosia is the last divided capital in the world and offers an opportunity to see history with your own eyes.

The city is divided to the south (Cyprus side) and the Northern side controlled by Turkey.

The contrast of walking around a beautifully renovated old town and hitting the border with a wired fence, Turkish flags, and ‘no photography’ signs all around is a bit of a shock to say at least.

The borders themselves look a bit like a warzone still and it’s chilling to think what has been happening here.

The architecture reflects a mix of the two cultures and you can spend hours just getting lost in the streets of the old town.

nicosia cyprus

11. Agios Georgios, Paphos

The small fishing village of Agios Georgios just outside of Paphos is a surprising find that’s well worth the drive just for the views.

The water here is so clear you can see all the rocks on the seafloor and the colourful fishing boats are beautiful backdrops for photos.

Further down the coastline, you will discover small naturally formed lagoons and caves carved into white rocks.

While there is no beach to speak of, you can get adventurous and find your own way to the water somewhere along the coastline.

moving to cyprus expectations vs reality

12. Konnos Bay, Protaras

One of the prettiest beaches on the island, you can’t miss visiting Konnos Bay .

Only 2km away from Cape Greco, the sandy beach has perfect swimming conditions even for inexperienced swimmers and the surrounding cliffs provide a stunning vantage point to capture some amazing shots.

13. Grape by the Sea, Kato Pyrgos

If you’re up for a road trip, head to Kato Pyrgos (close to the borders with Northern Cyprus ).

This small village is home to probably the best beach restaurant on the island – Grape by the Sea .

Located just at the end of the village, the simple setting offers spectacular views of Turkey and uninterrupted sea views.

The drive from Polis towards Kato Pyrgos is an experience in itself – stunning views from everywhere the road, dramatic cliff drops, and another hidden gem on the way – Koullas Sandwiches.

grape by the sea

14. Oniro by the Sea, Paphos

Loved by locals for their food and sunset views. Oniro by the Sea is near Peyia, tucked away between banana plantations and overlooking the shipwreck Edro II.

As you enjoy your cocktail or dinner, you can hear the waves crashing against the rocks and the sun is setting right in front of you.

Book your table just before sunset time and hop out of the restaurants to capture the shots.

oniro by the sea

15. Limassol Old Town

Just like Paphos old town , Limassol has also plenty of adorable alleyways and hidden corners to explore.

Start at the Limassol castle and get lost in a maze of small streets lined with local cafes and restaurants.

I liked it best when it gets dark and the streets fill up with cheerful locals chatting away over a glass of wine.

boho resto bar limassol

16. Beach at Sunset

You can’t go wrong with a good sunset photo, right?

In Cyprus, you are spoiled with options and if you get your timing right, it’s pretty easy to get a perfect shot each time.

Agios Georgios is a beautiful, small fishing village located in Paphos, and a short drive from Coral Bay. It’s the last village in Paphos, and the entrance to the Akamas Peninsula.

The Agios Georgios Chapel is located in the Peyia Village, in Cape Drepano. It’s a quaint, litle chapel, which has two bell towers.

22. Pomos Village

The beautiful Pomos village is in the northeast of Paphos, and geographically part of the Tillyria District. Pomos is a laid back village, and if you want to get away from the busy parts of Paphos, this is the best part to go as it is considered as one of the remaining undisturbed and unspoiled areas of Paphos.

The road from Polis to Akron Pamos is actually one of the most beautiful and scenic paths in Cyprus.

23. Ayia Napa

And now we moved to Ayia Napa destination spots. Ayia Napa (officially romanized Agia Napa), is a touristic resort part at the far eastern end of Cyprus southern coast. It is officially a part of The Famagusta District.

Ayia Napa is one of the most popular resort areas in Cyprus, especially from international travelers, and it has the reputation of being a huge party place because of the night clubs, karaoke bars and foam parties in the area.

However, it still has Cyprus’ signature historic vibe – the cobbled streets, the tavernas in the harbor, and the Medieval monasteries.

24. Cape Greco National Park

The main attraction of Ayia Napa, the Cape Greko National park is a mixed of natural trails, botanical beauty and sea cliffs views. What more can you look for? One of the nature trails of Cape Greko forms part of the European Long Distance Trail E4 (this runs from Cyprus to Gibraltar), and the Aphrodite Nature Trail.

This trail a a 2km nature trail which also doubles as a cultural route because of how it is believed to be Aphrodite’s mythical birth place. Cape Greco also has beautiful marine life which also makes it a good place to visit for divers. In this photo, you’ll see high limestone cliffs – all natural without any human intervention.

25. The Bridge of Love

The Bridge of Love / Love Bridge is one of the most instagrammable places in Cyprus to see in Ayia Napa. It is a natural bridge, and considered one of the most remarkable spots in all of Cyprus.

This is very popular as a point where lovers “lock their love”. The romanticism, and the beaut especially during sunsets makes it so popular to photographers, and honeymooners, and all types of couples.

The Bridge of love is one of the Cypurs instagram spots that you can’t miss a natural arched bridge with an edge that extends to some of Cyprus’ bluest waters. And the bridge is all natural.

It is believed that if you kiss your special someone while you are on the bridge, and make a wish, whatever it is will come true. Whether that’s true of not, it is still one of the most sought after areas in Ayia Napa, and is a part of Cape Greco National Park.

26. Sea Caves in Ayia Napa

Another must visit while in Ayia Napa are the Sea Caves , beautiful rock bridges, hidden caves and tunnels. These mark the start of Cape Greco National Park and you will see them along Ayia Napa’s mesmerizing coastline.

To get to the Sea Caves in Ayia Napa, you can drive east from Ayia Napa, towards Protaras. Turn left at the first sign for Grecian Park Hotel and Cape Greco, and then turn right onto a dirt track which will then lead you to the sea caves.

The local bus route 101 / 102 passed by here too, but it can be a short walk from the main road. Just follow the coastal pathway from Ayia Napa if you want to reach them by walking, although it’s quite a long walk.

There are a lot of ways to enjoy the sea caves and the Cape Greco including tours, cliff dives, and more.

27. Oniro by the Sea Peyia

On the other side, near the sea caves is this shipwreck – Oniro by the sea . This is a beautiful view that just adds so much attitude in the area, and with the sunset, and the restaurants around, you can just get a crazy beautiful view of this.

28. Nissi Beach

Nissi Beach in Ayia Napa is one of the most stunning beaches of Cyprus. The crystalline blue water stretches 500 meters, with beautiful white sand, and with warm water. There are definitely a lot of activities to enjoy here on your beautiful Cypriot holiday.

There are a lot of beach parties that you can definitely join as this is one of the most touristic beaches of Ayia Napa, and the whole of Cyprus.

29. Konnos Bay

Next to the Nissi Beach, Konnos Bay is also one of the most Cyprus instagram spots and beautiful scenic water areas of Ayia Napa. A beautiful secluded beach, perfect for swimming, even for kids, as there are no caves.

Konnos Bay can be found 2km north of Cape Greco. It also has amazing crystalline blue waters, stretching 200 meters.

30. Fig Tree Beach / Fig Tree Bay Protaras Cyprus

Awarded as the third best beach in Europe, the Fig Tree Bay in Protaras is one of Cyprus’ beautiful sandy beaches. The Fig Tree Beach is popular as a family beach, and there are a lot of water activities available.

It’s very interesting why it’s named the Fig Tree, and this is because there is a single fig tree in the bay, that has been there since the 17th century!

31. Makronissos Beach

Makronissos Beach is one of the most instagrammable places in Cyprus a stunning and beautiful blue beach, The Makronissos Beach is 5km from the center of Ayia Napa, and stretches to 3 other small bays. The beach is suitable for families.

32. Makronissos Necropolis / Necropolis Tombs

Apart from the beach area, the Makronissos Beach, this is also very close to the Makronissos Necropolis , the Archeological area which has 19 tombs also built during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

33. Nicosia Old Town / Venetian Walls

A walk around Nicosia old town is definitely one of the things you have to do when you are in the capital. Nicosia is the last divided city in the world (dates back to the Bronze Age), and you’ll discover so mush culture and heart and archeology in the city.

Signs of the historic past – old churches, medieval buildings. Visit Ledra Street, a cobbled-street area which is full of local shops, cafe’s and bars. Close to the Ledra is the Onasagorou Street where you can experience another authentic feel of the Nicosia Old Town vibe.

34. Kato Pyrgos

Kato Pyrgos is a village in the foothills of Troodos Mountains. It’s a rather remote area to visit, but you’ll definitely see a lot of old temples and churches and chapels here.

A beautiful oak tree stands in the heart of Pyrgos, which dates back to 110 years, just crazy! Pyrgos also has a beautiful blue coastline during Cypriot summers.

35. Caledonia Waterfall / Kalidonia Falls

The Caledonia Waterfalls is one of the highest waterfalls in Cyprus, located in the village of Platres in the Trodoos. and surrounded by beautiful forest greenery and views. The waterfalls is 12 km in height, and can be reached by a 3km hike.

This trail can take up to 3 hours, however there’s an easier path that you can take, and the shortcut can take around 20 minutes, from Aedonion road.

36. Kyrenia

Kyrenia is the main town of the Kyrenia District, the smallest of all of Cyprus’ Districts, and the only one controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. It’s popular for the historic harbor and its castles. And it is considered the cultural capital of Northern Cyprus.

The Saint Hilarion Castle lies in the Kyrenia Mountain Range of Cyprus, and was built by the Byzantines. The castle itself was named after St. Hilarion.

He was a hermit monk who ran away from persecution in the Holy land and was believed to have died in the mountains. The Byzantines build a monastery here in the 10th century.

16 Top-Rated Attractions & Places to Visit in Cyprus

Written by Jess Lee Updated Mar 22, 2022

This island has a grand history. Coveted by empires across the centuries, Cyprus' enviable position has made it a prized possession for all who rose to power in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Today, people still flock here, but it's now to seek out the island's beaches rather than to gain power and glory.

For travelers interested in more than sand and sun, you're in for a treat, as Cyprus has archaeological sites , fine Byzantine churches, and monasteries and museums galore among its historic tourist attractions.

It's also a wonderful place to go hiking , with an incredible wealth of unique flora and fauna. Best of all, it's so small that you can easily base yourself in one town and head out on sightseeing day trips from there.

Make sure you don't miss any of what's on offer by using our list of the top attractions and places to visit in Cyprus.

1. Ancient Kourion

2. st. hilarion castle, 4. karpas peninsula, 5. ancient salamis, 6. kolossi castle, 7. cape greco, 8. troodos villages, 9. house of dionysus, 10. cyprus museum, 11. nissi beach, 12. kyrenia, 13. underwater museum, 14. famagusta old city, 15. protaras beaches, 16. nicosia old city.

Ancient Kourion

There's no shortage of ancient sites in Cyprus, but Kourion is the pick of the bunch. Exploring the grand monuments and mosaics here is one of the best things to do in Cyprus .

Romantically situated across a coastal cliff, with tumbling views of the countryside and Mediterranean below, it's a magical place.

The entire site is vast, but the most famous places to visit while here are the theater and the House of Eustolios , which holds a clutch of fine, well-preserved mosaics.

For those with more time up their sleeves, the large Byzantine basilica area is wonderfully picturesque with its tumbled columns and scraps of mosaic floor.

St. Hilarion Castle

One of the Mediterranean's most beautiful castle ruins, St. Hilarion is an old Crusader bastion and home to many myths and legends.

Local lore claims the castle itself was built by a fairy queen, who used to charm local shepherds on the slopes here.

The castle's extensive ramparts and chambers snake up the mountain and are explorer heaven. A trail runs through the lower castle buildings of soldier barracks and stables, up to the remnants of towers, royal apartments, and chapels.

For those that climb right to the top, the views across the hills and down to the coastal plain are phenomenal.

St. Hilarion is in north Cyprus, so you need to cross the Green Line to visit. The north has three major castle ruins, but St. Hilarion is by far the best preserved. This is the one to visit if you're only on a day trip to the north.

Larnaca

Easygoing Larnaca, on the island's southeast coast, may be a seaside resort, but it's kept its local soul.

This is by far the most laid-back base for holidaymakers here. All the facilities for sun- and sand-based fun can be found, but the old crumbling Turkish Quarter (called Skala) and ornate Agios Lazaros (Church of St. Lazarus) give the town an interesting historical edge, while the center itself has retained the atmosphere of a proper workaday town rather than just a summer resort.

Even better, the salt lake , just to Larnaca's west, is packed full of flocks of pink flamingos during spring, and plenty of hill villages and cultural tourist attractions lie in the surrounding hinterland.

Golden Beach on the Karpas Peninsula

The most beautiful region in Cyprus is the lonely and rugged Karpas Peninsula, which stretches out in a long finger of golden beaches backed by rugged hills in the northeast of the island (in north Cyprus).

It's Cyprus' least trodden area with sublime hiking, quaint villages, and hidden historical sites in abundance.

This is the place you need to head if you want to experience the undiscovered and undeveloped island life of old.

Agios Filon church

Venture out for the day in a car (the area has virtually no public transport) and visit the mosaics of Agia Triada at Sipahi village before heading further northeast to remote Dipkarpaz village and the small ruin of Agios Filon church.

Afterwards, move on to the peninsula's famous Golden Beach, a vast swath of sand that sums up the Karpas' rugged appeal.

Ancient Salamis

This huge archaeological site is home to a wealth of marble ruins and ranks up there with Ancient Kourion as the top historical site on the island.

Wandering along the dirt tracks of Salamis between sets of ruins from a muddle of different time periods is a lesson in the vast history of Cyprus.

Grand Hellenistic statuary – missing their heads, which were lopped off by over-zealous Christians – sit amid the ruins of the Gymnasium.

Two substantial ruins of Byzantine churches stand amid fields of wild fennel and weeds, and a humongous reservoir area showcases the engineering ability and management of what must have once been a grand ancient city.

Ancient Salamis is in north Cyprus and is easily combined with a day trip to Famagusta.

Kolossi Castle

If castles had cuteness competitions, Kolossi would surely come up trumps. This tiny but perfectly formed castle just outside of Limassol is an old Crusader stronghold and a reminder of Cyprus' importance for the Europeans during the Holy Land Crusades.

First held by the Knights of St. John, the castle was used as a commandery for the area, with an excellent location looking out over the coast line.

Today, the castle's appeal is mostly down to its dollhouse proportions and its tranquil position amid snoozy Kolossi village.

Cape Greco

Even along Cyprus' buzzing south coast, there are regions where you can escape the crowds.

Cape Greco is a rugged and rocky coastal national park covering the promontory that makes up the island's southerly tip. There's a variety of walking trails here that start just east of the resort of Agia Napa.

The longest trail winds across the rocky headland, with staircases at points along the cliff, where you can descend to swim by the sea caves, and ending at the tiny cove of Konnos Beach, where you can cool off with another swim after your walk.

There is a wonderful variety of local flora here, particularly many of Cyprus' endemic wild orchids that bloom in early spring but the real highlight is the absolutely gorgeous coastal scenery with azure blue sea beyond.

Agros village in the Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Massif (Troodos Mountains), in the hill region of the southwest, are packed full of pretty villages full of stone-cut traditional houses and cobblestone alleys.

They're also home to some of Cyprus' most amazing churches and monasteries that hold vibrant frescoes and wall paintings that date from the medieval era.

The Troodos churches are so important historically that nine of them have been given UNESCO World Heritage status.

Hiring a car and tootling around this area, searching out stone cut chapels is a great day out but if you only have time to view one, the Church of Archangelos Michail in the little village of Pedoulas should be top of your things to do list.

For self-drive day trip potential, the Troodos Mountains are easiest accessed using Limassol or Nicosia as your base.

To cut down on the driving there are also plenty of small boutique-style hotels in the main Troodos Mountains villages themselves.

House of Dionysus

The big-hitter site in the resort of Paphos is the House of Dionysus, home to an incredible collection of mosaic floors that are feted for their excellent preservation and vibrant coloring.

Part of the larger Paphos Archaeological Site which contains the excavated remains of ancient Paphos, the area is home to a variety of Greco-Roman ruins, as well as several other mosaic houses.

Mosaic at the House of Dionysus

The House of Dionysus remains the most visited part of the site because it contains the best examples of intricate mosaic artistry.

The house is named after the god Dionysus who crops up in many of the mosaics throughout the house, which mostly depict scenes of Greek mythology.

Cyprus Museum

With so many archaeological sites, Cyprus is packed full of museums, but the Cyprus Museum in the capital Nicosia is where you go to pull together all of the island's history.

Extremely well-curated, the museum takes visitors on a journey from the Neolithic age right up to the Ottoman era using beautiful artifacts to show the sophisticated artistry of each period.

The standout exhibits are the huge collection of terra-cotta votive statues that date from the 7th century BC.

Even if you're based on the coast, you should definitely make a half-day trip to the capital just to view the museum.

Nissi Beach

A swath of white sand loveliness that rolls onto the turquoise sea in Agia Napa, Nissi Beach is Cyprus' most famous strip of sand.

Yes, it gets crowded in summer (a beach this gorgeous doesn't stay a secret), but even with rows of sunbeds, there's no denying Nissi's beauty.

The water is very shallow at the shoreline and very calm within the bay as a whole, making it a great spot for families with young children, and in the summer high season, bags of facilities are on offer, meaning you can make an entire day at the beach.

Kyrenia

Kyrenia (Girne) is north Cyprus' prettiest town having clung to the old Ottoman character of its harborside district.

Kyrenia Castle overlooks the quaint harbor on the eastern side, and climbing up onto the castle's ramparts rewards you with fantastic views across the town.

A squiggle of narrow lanes meander back from the waterfront area, full of wooden-shuttered houses in various states of disrepair. It's a great place for strolling and soaking up the timeless atmosphere and there are plenty of cafés overlooking the harbor for when you want to put your feet up.

MUSAN Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa

Opened in 2021, the underwater museum park (officially called MUSAN Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa) is an underwater forest featuring 130 sculptures created by reef artist Jason deCaires Taylor.

As well as being a major new tourist attraction, the forest has been created to help the local marine environment, with the sculptures (all made from PH neutral cement that will eventually attract coral) set between kelp, which will grow to become a dense forest attracting marine life to the area.

Both snorkelers and scuba divers can explore the underwater museum, though divers will be able to head down to the farthest depths of the park.

MUSAN is situated off the coast of Pernera Beach in Ayia Napa.

Official site: http://musan.com.cy/en/home

Famagusta old city

In north Cyprus, don't miss the old city of Famagusta, surrounded by sturdy, high Venetian-era walls and inside, scattered with the crumbling ruins of Gothic churches.

In the center is the Lala Mustafa Paşa Mosque, which was originally the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in the early 14th century during the reign of the Lusignans.

Sprinkled throughout the old city's lanes are several other churches in various states of ruin or disrepair, mostly dating from the 14th century and built in the Gothic style but also some earlier Byzantine examples.

Famagusta's biggest tourist attraction, though, is its 16th-century Venetian walls, with its bastions and gates, which can still be climbed up and traversed across at some sections.

Beautiful beach in Protaras

In the island's southeast corner, the coastline running north from Cape Greco up to the Green Line (which separates the Republic from the north) is speckled with beaches.

This stretch of coast is a summer resort haven, with the little town of Protaras the central base for family-friendly holidays devoted to sun, sea, and sand.

Protaras Beach and Fig Tree Bay are the two most popular strips of sand, with plenty of water sports on offer and facilities for a full day of beach time, though the small white-sand cove of Konnos Beach, on the northern edge of Cape Greco, comes a close third.

To the north of Protaras, the little sand strips of Agia Triada Beach and Skoutari Beach are great options if you want to escape the biggest crowds, but during mid-summer, don't expect any patch of sand along this coast to be empty.

Nicosia old city alleyway

Nicosia is Europe's last divided capital. Nicosia (Lefkosia) is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus, and North Nicosia (Lefkoşa) is the capital of UN-unrecognized north Cyprus.

The Green Line slices right through the center of the walled old city district, and you will need to have your passport (and fulfill any of the current border requirements, which change regularly) if you want to cross.

In Nicosia (Lefkosia), the old city lanes are home to several excellent small museums, including the Makarios Cultural Foundation Byzantine Museum, and some fresco-covered churches, such as the Agios Ioannis Church.

Two of the city's best preserved architectural sights are in North Nicosia (Lefkoşa). Here, you'll find the glorious Gothic architecture of the Selimiye Mosque, originally the 14th-century St. Sophia Cathedral, and the Ottoman-era caravanserai of the Büyük Han.

8 Useful Things to Know Before You Visit Cyprus

cyprus tourism instagram

Did you decide to spend a couple of days in Cyprus ? Great! Before you visit Cyprus, there are a few things you should know in advance.

This blog post includes all the useful information to make your dream trip as smooth as possible and to learn more about the small country in the Mediterranean Sea!

Btw, it’s never a mistake to check out a complete Cyprus travel guide to find the best accommodations, restaurants, beaches, etc.!

(This post contains affiliate links, which means I receive a certain percentage of a sale if you purchase after clicking.)

1. Cyprus is Part of The European Union

Despite its location close to Turkey; Lebanon and Syria, Cyprus is a European country and part of the European Union since May 2004.

Even though the country is divided (I’ll talk about this later on in this post), the whole of the country is EU territory.

Most of the countries belonging to the EU use the Euro as currency and so does Cyprus. Since 2008, it’s been the country’s official currency, replacing the old one called the Cypriot pound or lira.

In the northern part of the island tho, the official currency is the Turkish lira (another fact, I’ll explain soon).

Visa Requirements

If you live in the EU, USA, Canada, Australia or the UK you don’t need a visa if you visit Cyprus .

However, if you’re a non-EU visitor, you need a passport valid for at least three months from the date of entry (six months if you’re from Australia). Visitors from the EU need a valid passport for the duration of their stay only.

The fact you (probably) don’t need a visa makes traveling to Cyprus really easy. But if you plan on staying more than 90 days in the country, you have to get a registration certificate.

If you want to get more information about all the requirements and visa applications on the Cyprus Visa website .

2. The Country is Divided Into Two Parts

Cyprus’ modern history has always been full of tensions between the Greek and Turkish people living there.

In 1974, Turkey invaded the northern part of Cyprus – apparently in response to a military coup on the island by the Greek government.

Since then, the country has been divided and the Turkish Cypriot government now runs the northern third whereas the Greek Cypriots lead the two-thirds in the south.

Its capital city Nicosia is the last divided city in the entire world.

Official Languages

Being divided into two parts also means the country has two different official languages. In the south, the everyday spoken language is Cypriot Greek whereas, in the north, people communicate in Cypriot Turkish.

3. There’s Left-Hand Traffic

Something I hadn’t known before and found out only shortly after we booked our rental car for our road trip in Cyprus is that there’s left-hand traffic.

For someone who hardly drives long distances not to mention on a motorway – well, it was a real shock. Nevertheless, I drove most of the time and it was better than I’d expected.

If you’re from the UK, Malta, Australia, India, etc. great, you’re already used to it. But if you’re used to driving on the right side of the road like me, it can be quite a challenge.

The best is if you rent an automatic car – you can do that beforehand, for example via rentalcars.com – and always stay on the left side!

Plus don’t forget the turn indicators are on the right and windscreen wipers on the left side of the steering wheel.

Tours you might find interesting :

Speed Limits

The speed limits in Cyprus are 100 km/h on motorways 80 km/h on other roads 50 km/h in built-up areas.

If you drive 100 km/h on the motorway you’ll probably see many cars pass you at a higher speed. Apparently, police only stop you if you exceed 120 km/h but there’s a huge number of mobile speed checks .

4. Sockets and Power Plugs Are of Type G

The left-hand traffic isn’t the only thing Cyprus got from the British colonization back then. Like in the UK, the power plugs and sockets are of type G.

So if you visit Cyprus and you’re not from the UK, don’t forget to pack an adapter!

If you’re from Europe, Australia or Asia you can easily use your electric appliances in Cyprus because the standard volt is 240 V and the frequency is 50 Hz.

However, if you’re from the US, Canada or South America you’ll need a voltage converter.

5. The Island is The Birthplace of Aphrodite

Even though Aphrodite is a Greek goddess, her birthplace is said to be Cyprus.

A geological formation of huge rocks named “Petra tou Romiou” along a beautiful coastline is the place where Aphrodite was born.

According to legends, the Greek goddess rose from the waves and was then brought on a shell to this specific beach.

Some popular myths say that if you swim around the rock three times it’ll bring you eternal youth, good luck, fertility, true love, and beauty!

Who wants to give it a try?

6. Temperature Differences Can be Significant

I learned during my time in Cyprus that temperature could vary a lot depending on which part of the island you are in.

For example, if you visit Cyprus in winter and want to explore the Troodos Mountains , be prepared for temperatures around zero and icy wind.

I really underestimated these temperature differences and didn’t pack enough warm clothes.

The day we went to the mountains the weather in Larnaca was really warm with temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius. Whereas in the mountains they were as slow as 5 degrees Celsius with a strong wind.

Even if you visit Cyprus in summer, don’t forget to pack appropriate clothes if you want to explore the higher-located parts of the island as well.

7. Getting Drunk in Public is a No-Go

Enjoying a glass of wine or one or two cocktails with some friends in a Cypriot bar is completely acceptable and that’s what locals do too. However, public binge drinking is mostly considered shameful and frowned upon.

This is mostly because certain parts of Cyprus are Muslim whereas other parts are Greek Orthodox.

So if you don’t want to attract public attention and people staring at you avoid getting drunk.

8. Cypriots Are Very Helpful People

Last but not least, there’s one thing you’ll recognize very fast if you visit Cyprus: Cypriots are SUPER friendly and helpful!

On our first day on the island, we were looking for our apartment but couldn’t find it. A man who saw how desperate we were, approached us and offered his help. Thanks to him, we found our apartment only a few minutes later.

Another time when we walked down the road to the sea caves, a small bus stopped next to us. It was a tour guide showing tourists around and he insisted on taking us with him the rest of the way.

It was such a nice and kind gesture, we couldn’t thank him enough. He even offered us two free spots for the rest of his tour but we rejected them since we had other plans.

Be prepared for a heartily welcome in Cyprus! 🙂

Deputy Minister of Tourism Elena Rapti was a keynote speaker at the Attica Green Expo 2024, where she addressed the roundtable theme “Promoting Sustainable Tourism Beyond Peak Seasons”, on Wednesday.

Rapti emphasized the importance of promoting the sustainability of destinations throughout the year, beyond the usual tourist peak months.

She outlined several initiatives aimed at achieving this goal, including the establishment of the Regional Tourism Council, comprising 13 regional leaders, as a key advisory body to the Minister of Tourism. Additionally, Rapti highlighted efforts to disseminate the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism Development and the role of the National Observatory.

In her address, Rapti also underscored the significance of financing thematic forms of tourism through the Recovery Fund, specifically mentioning cultural tourism, pilgrimage tourism, agro-tourism, gastronomic tourism, and wine tourism.

Attica Green Expo 2024 will continue until Saturday (June 1), at the Tae Kwon Do Stadium in Paleo Faliro.

Politics to porn: what is Cyprus looking at online?

cover Politics to porn: what is Cyprus looking at online?

‘We’ve moved out of the villages, but we still like to know what our neighbours are up to!’ ALIX NORMAN looks at what the island uses the internet for

‘After a slow start, the internet has finally become part of the social fabric in Cyprus, 42 per cent of Cypriots are logging on, mostly for an hour a day’!

Wait, what?

Let’s clarify: this quote isn’t recent. But it’s not from all that long ago, either. In fact, the data comes from an article that appeared in the Cyprus Mail just 15 years ago.

Yes, in 2009, only half of the island was online on a regular basis.

This was long before the days of Netflix and Spotify, well before we all discovered we could explore everything from cats to crochet online. In fact, what Cyprus was reading back then was fairly specific: world affairs for the most part, although a significant number of web users (nearly 25 per cent) were logging on purely to check the football results.

“I think it was 2010 when I got internet in my home,” says 52-year-old repatriated London-Cypriot, Stelios Mavrou. “And it was painfully slow compared with today! The primary reason was so I could get a bunch of English channels through Cytavision. But I also used it to check up on the sports scores in the UK – stuff you couldn’t find in the paper, like darts and snooker.

“I had Facebook, of course, but I rarely used it. Nowadays, I’m on it all the time – I’ve run charity campaigns that were dependent on social media, and it’s how I keep in touch with my friends all around the world.”

Today, according to the latest round of the European Social Survey, more than three quarters of Cyprus residents use the internet every single day (making us second only to Sweden). And we’re now online for an average of 5.5 hours every day – which gives us an increase of 450 per cent since the original article was written!

in the past, social netowrking took place in person

In the past, social networking took place in person

The biggest increase has come in our social media usage. Back in 2009, a mere 18 per cent of the island used Facebook. Compare that to 2024, and the jump is staggering . As of 2024, Cyprus’ social media usage is the second highest in the EU (after Denmark), with over 83 per cent of the island actively using platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Tik Tok.

Given that the EU average is 59 per cent, we’re certainly a highly social nation. But then weren’t we always – even before everything went online?

“When I was growing up,” says 72-year-old Kyriaki Paraskevi, “you’d walk round the village every evening – the peripato – to see what had happened during the day. So you’d stop and chat to your neighbours sitting outside: find out what they were making for dinner; ask after the health of their father who you knew was suffering from arthritis; discover whose children had got a good grade in their exams.

“Nowadays, all that happens online. On Facebook, I can see photos of what my friends are eating, updates on their ailing relatives, posts about their kids getting into university or doing well in school. We’ve moved out of the villages, but we still like to know what our neighbours are up to!”

In 2009, the average local internet user was a 25-year-old male who enjoyed sports, gaming, and politics. Today , Cyprus’ average internet user is a highly educated 35-year-old female, who primarily goes online to communicate with friends and check her socials!

Clearly, the way Cyprus uses the internet has changed a huge amount over the last 15 years.

Skype, WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger and Facetime are now the island’s favourite online activities, closely followed by Facebook, Tiktok, Instagram and YouTube. News comes in third, while goods and services (buying that pair of Adidas Spezial you’ve had your eye on while ordering a Toronto pizza via Foody) are fourth.

Interestingly, the fifth most popular online activity in Cyprus is looking up health-related issues . Which tells us we’re either a nation of hypochondriacs or we trust Google over our doctors!

“There’s rarely a day I’m not looking up some symptom or cure,” says 45-year-old Daphne Loizou. “I have chronic fatigue, and there are very few doctors in Cyprus who can even begin to understand the condition. Most of my information comes from medical sites, the NHS portal, and social media support groups. They’ve helped me far more than any local doctor ever has.”

Emails and banking come in sixth and seventh, with job searches and job applications taking eighth (from which we can probably surmise that a great many of us are unhappy with our current employment and/or salary!).

And just ahead of Cyprus’ tenth most popular online activity (selling our own goods and services), comes a delightful category called ‘expressing opinions on civic or political issues’. No surprise there.

However, it’s not just what we’re looking at that’s changed in the last 15 years. Who’s doing the looking has also shifted dramatically as early internet adopters have grown older: today, the 30 to 55 age group use the internet just as much as the 16 to 30s. And 75 per cent of residents aged between 56 and 75 are also regularly online.

many older people now use digital technology 2

While our yiayias and pappous clearly love the internet, the older generation mostly use smartphones, and do so for connection. But the younger generations appear to spend a great deal of their online time streaming or downloading.

Films and series take top place, closely followed by music and games. Though the internet’s most prevalent online activity doesn’t get a mention either in the initial article or in more recent surveys…

Four whole months before the original online article, the Cyprus Mail ran a piece entitled ‘Cypriots most avid porn viewers in Europe’!

Apparently, 2009 data on the most viewed websites in each country showed that an unnamed porn site was the 14th most-viewed site in Cyprus – the highest ranking of a porn site in the EU. Back then, the site was more popular than Protathlima.com and Twitter!

Three other adult sites also appeared in Cypriot browsers’ top 50 back then. Given that the rest of our internet usage has jumped hugely over the last 15 years, it makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
