Dimona Israel – the Third Largest City in the Negev

However, this infamous desert town is most popularly known to the outside world as the location of Israel’s “secret nuclear weapons” facility. Actually there is a Negev Nuclear research center located about 13 km. (8 miles) southeast of the town. The purpose of this facility is assumed to be the manufacture of nuclear weapons although Israel does not confirm or deny this claim. My cousin Avishai was actually stationed there during his military service and refuses to discuss it as well. So, I guess you can draw your own conclusions.

What is there to see and do in Dimona?:

Mamshit, now a National Park and Unesco World Heritage Site, is a Nabatean city historically known as the place where Arabian horses were bred and raised. It is the smallest of the Negev’s Nabatean cities, but many consider it the best restored. It contains uniquely restored architectural elements that you won’t find in any other place. On your visit, you will evidence this first hand due to the restoration of the streets, as well as the terraces, courtyards, and rooms comprised of stone with strong arch ceiling supports.

Don’t Miss: The Nabatean floodwater dam over Mamshit Stream . It is about a one hour hike with great views.

Dimona is a small town in the north-eastern Negev desert of Israel . It is the third-largest city in the Negev, with population of about 34,000. Dimona is mostly known for the nearby nuclear research facility, which according to various unofficial publications is the home of Israel's nuclear weapons program.

Dimona was settled by immigrants from North Africa in the 1960s. A sect of Black Hebrews who left Chicago in search of self-fulfillment (as Christians) in the Israeli desert arrived in Dimona. Whitney Houston has relatives among them.

The most convenient way to get to Dimona is by bus from Beer Sheva .

The Black Hebrew Israelite community lives mostly in a neighborhood in the east part of the city. These are African-Americans who immigrated to Israel several decades ago, and follow practices similar to those of Judaism. They are welcoming to outsiders, and their celebrations of holidays like Passover and Shavuot are very colorful.

Dimona is generally quite boring, where the only excitement may be the occasional wind storm. You can't even see the famous alleged nuclear site from the city.

Dimona is an Israeli city in the Negev desert, 36 kilometers to the south of Beer-Sheva and 35 kilometers west of the Dead Sea in the Southern District of Israel.

Dimona was one among several "development towns" that were created in the 1950s at the initiative of David Ben-Gurion. Dimona itself was conceived in 1953, and settled in 1955, mostly by new immigrants from Northern Africa, who also constructed the city's houses. When the Israeli nuclear program started later that decade, a location not so far from the city was chosen due to its relative isolation in the desert and availability of housing.

In spite of a gradual decrease during the 1980s, the city's population began to grow once again with the beginning of the Russian immigration in the 1990s. Currently, Dimona is the third largest city in the Negev, with the population of 31,200 (1995 estimate). About a third of the city's population works in industrial workplaces (chemical plants at the Dead Sea, high-tech companies and textile shops), and another third in the area of services. Due to the introduction of new technologies, many workmen have found themselves fired in the recent years, creating a total unemployment rate of about 10%.

Dimona is the center of the Black Hebrews, a small religious community that lives according to their own special rules.
