Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Dinagat Islands summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while on Dinagat Islands.

1 | Lake Bababu

Located in the main Dinagat Island, Lake Bababu is hidden amidst lush greenery in the town of Basilisa.  From a small secluded beach, one must trek for at least half an hour through steep and rocky trails in order to be rewarded with the peaceful vibe and scenic views of the lake and its surroundings.  The lake is meromictic which is characterized by having both freshwater and saltwater.

In the waters of the lake is a 650-meter underwater cave which is connected to the sea.  So aside from boating, swimming, and camping, cave diving is also one of the activities to do in the lake.

2 | Hinabyan Beach

Looking for a white sand beach with a lush mountain backdrop?  Hinabyan Beach is for you!  The beach has pristine waters and is less touristy as there are no restaurants, resorts, and other amenities.  It is great for swimming, fishing, or if you just want to lounge by the shore in peace and enjoy the sound of the waves.

3 | Unib Island Beaches

Unib Island is a small island off the coast of Basilisa.  Its beaches are known for their pristine waters and white sand.  Don’t miss Bitaog Beach, Gealan Beach, and Cabacongan Beach which also has a cove and tall limestone cliffs.

4 | Waterfalls

There are at least three waterfalls found on Dinagat mainland.  The town of Tubajon alone has two – Bangkaw Falls and Paragamac Falls.  Bangkaw Falls is accessible to the public and is developed with a  pool and native cottages.  Paragamac Falls has multiple tiers and cascades into natural pools where one can enjoy a refreshing dip.  Dako Falls in the town of Loreto is surrounded by rainforest and also has a natural pool.

5 | Mountains

Most mountains on the island are home to bonsai forest where trees grow to a maximum height of 4 feet.  Mount Redondo, the highest peak in Dinagat Islands, has a bonsai forest which covers an area of more than 600 hectares making it the second-largest bonsai forest in the Philippines.  Mount Redondo is also home to a rich biodiversity including the endemic Dinagat cloud rat and tarsier, both are classified as endangered.

Other mountains with bonsai forests are Mount Palhi (Babaeng Bukid) and Mount Cambinliw.  Aside from their rich biodiversity, the three mountains are interesting hiking and mountaineering sites offering scenic views of lagoons and lush forests.

6 | Hagakhak Island

Hagakhak Island is known for its Sondayo Beach, a white sand beach with its shore lined with coconut trees.  It boasts of crystal clear water and is a great spot for various water activities including snorkeling, diving, and kayaking.  West of Hagakhak Island is Little Hagakhak, though devoid of sandy beaches, is well-known among tourists for its unique rock formations.

7 | Isla Aga

Like Little Hagakhak, Isla Aga hosts different rock formations where lush vegetation grows.  The island features a hanging bridge held together by rock formations and suspended over the tempting blue waters.  Its peak offers scenic views of the island and the neighboring islands.

8 | Tambongon Lagoon

Not only is it a fish sanctuary where endemic aquatic life thrives but is also a great spot for swimming and boating.

There are two known caves in Dinagat – Kamangon Cave in the town of Loreto and Quano Cave in Libjo.  Both caves have stalactite and stalagmite rock formations and are inhabited by bats.

10 | PBMA Shrine

PBMA Shrine, which stands for Philippine Benevolent Missionary Association, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Dinagat.  Located in the town of San Jose, it features an impressive architecture and well-manicured lawn that make a perfect backdrop for your travel photos.

10 | Other destinations

More destinations to see in the province of Dinagat are Pangabangan Island, Oasis Islet, and Cab-ilan Beach on Cab-ilan Island.

For the best pizza on the island, Melitz Pizza is definitely the choice.  Their prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly so it is something you may want to try when in Dinagat.

4 | Mang Camiling’s

What is a trip to the island without feasting on barbecue?  In addition to their specialty, they also offer vege salad.

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.    AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  AirBnB . 

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly. 

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys ) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips. 

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.  

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option. 

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter. 

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!  

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

• Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
• Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
• Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
• Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
• Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
• Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
• It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
• Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
• Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
• Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling on Dinagat Islands or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

How to get to Dinagat Islands

There is no commercial airport in Dinagat Islands. The closest airport is in Surigao City. From Surigao City, you can take a boat/ferry to San Jose, Dinagat Islands. The travel time is around 1.5 hours.

There are also land attractions which you can do as a side trip if you have ore time. I personally love Dinagat Island and feel that it has a lot of potential to be the next Palawan.

The closest airport to Dinagat Island is Surigao Airport.

• From Surigao Port (aka Pantalan Dos Port) in Surigao City, ride a passenger boat en route to San Jose (P120 per person, 1.5-2 hours).
• The earliest schedule is 5AM and the latest boat going back to the city is at 3PM.

Make sure that you’re getting on a ferry to San Jose instead of Dinagat, which refers to another town.

Island attractions in Dinagat Island

These are the places you can see in the municipalities of Basilisa and Libjo during island hopping. There are a lot more to discover in Dinagat Island and this is just the tip of the iceberg, so I encourage you explore the province on your own.

If you’re only doing a day tour in Dinagat Island, most likely you will be visiting Basilisa. Here you can visit several beach coves. The nearest island in San Jose is called Unib Island or Lalaking Bukid, and here alone you can find 5 white-sand beaches: Bitaog Beach, Duyos Beach, Gealan Beach, Pagkawasan Beach and Cabacungan Cove.

• Bitaog Beach . A small beach cove with fine white sand and clear turquoise water. There are cottages that provides shade from the sun. It’s said to be the best beach in Dinagat.
• Gaelan Beach . Another beach, though not in par with Bitaog Beach.
• Pagkawasan Beach . This features twin white-sand beaches and interesting rock formations.
• Duyos Beach . A favorite local beach, particularly by families. Here you can rent a cottage and videoke.
• Babas Cove and Bababu Lake . From Babas Cove, a 30-minute trail will lead you to Bababu Lake. Babalu Lake has an emerald-green surface, surrounded by limestone formations and foliage. Interestingly, the lake has both fresh water (down to 20 feet) and salt water (20 feet and below) which does not mix due to lack of wind. It’s believed that the lake is enchanted, so it’s recommended to go here with someone.
• Little Hagakhak Island . Features sedimentary rock formations, similar to the ones in Biri, Samar .
• Aga Island . A private island with an abandoned house set atop a cliff. The view from the cliff overlooks the vast green ocean and several islands in the distance. There is a small beach cove where you can see swim.

These places are also located in Basilisa, but currently off-limits to visitors.

• Cabacungan Cove . This features intersting karst cliffs.
• Sundayo Beach (Hagakhak Island) .

Again, Libjo will take your breath away. It has beautiful islands and karst formations, similar to Palawan. The prime attraction in Libjo is the Pangabangan Pool. The rest are scenic private resorts.

• Pangabangan Pool . One of the most beautiful natural pools in the Philippines . The pool is a dazzling blue-green, as if it jumped out of a fairytale. You can trek up the hill to get a better photo of the pool.
• Punta Villa Nature Resort . This resort has a white-sand beach set across karst islets. You can swim, snorkel to see corals, enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding islets from the viewpoint or trek to Quano Cave.
• Jelmar’s Islet Resort . This is a humble resort with a boardwalk where you can take pictures or plunge directly into the water.
• Punta Buena Suerte . A lively resort known for its wonderful marine life including various types of fishes and sea turtles.

If you have spare time, you can also do a land tour in San Jose, the capital of Dinagat Islands.

The most prominent among these land attractions is the Islander’s Castle , also known as “White Castle”, which is owned by the Ecleos, a political family in the province who once lead a cult. The castle is notable because it’s a stark contrast to the surrounding dirt roads and shanties in the island. I suppose it falls under dark tourism.

If you’re into beaches, San Jose has a couple of nice ones which can be found in Cab-Island Island, Stingray Islet and Puyo Islet.

Island hopping tours

Boat tour rate depends on boat size and how many days you’re staying. Entrance fee to resorts are usually not included.

• Boat rental for 1 day : P2500 (good up to 2 pax) / P3500 (good up to 4 pax)
• Boat rental for 2 days : P5000 (good up to 2 pax) / P6000 (good up to 4 pax)

The 1-day itinerary covers the islands in Basilisa. You may also visit Pangabangan Tidal Pool in Libjo for an additional fee (around P500).

A joiner tour for 2 days island hopping in Dinagat costs around P2000 per person, including boat tour, entrance fees and accommodation.

• Currently, there is little tourist infrastructure in Dinagat Island so adjust your expectations accordingly.
• Bring enough cash with you as there are limited ATMs in San Jose.
• For DIY tours: you can buy food and water in San Jose Public Market. Usually resorts can cook your food for a minimal fee.

Hi Mrs Retchie, sorry we weren’t able to ask the names of accommodations in Dinagat, but definitely there are existing ones in the mainland. There’s no ferry from Dinagat to Siargao, you have to go back to Surigao City. Hope that helps.

Dinagat Islands, Mindanao. Ready to be discovered.

Dinagat Islands is not yet known to most travellers as a tourist destination. And the Filipinos who have heard of it, often associate it with the mining industry as well as stories of a mysterious religious sect and its fugitive leader. But there is so much more to this province, its jaw-dropping moments of natural beauty and its gentle, welcoming people. We spent almost 2 weeks exploring the islands, finding out why it is, for the most part, ‘undiscovered’.

From Surigao City to San Jose

A one hour plus banka trip from Surigao city takes you to San Jose, Dinagat Islands’ capital and main hub. Here is where you’ll find Bahay Turista, the islands’ tourism office, run by its charming and friendly Mayor, Danilo “Danny” Bulabos. The house offers basic accommodation (500 Pesos per room) as well as information on the island’s various points of interest and how to get there. Bearing in mind Dinagat’s status as a relatively new destination to travellers, the tourist office is an invaluable starting-off point.

The Love Boat transports you from Surigao to San Jose in an hour for around 100 pesos

Mayor Danny told us about the young history of Dinagat Islands and outlined the most interesting sights of San Jose. We opted to leave a tour of the capital for the end of our trip and instead headed South to Cagdianao, riding our bicycles along bumpy roads and over the kinds of hills that mountainbikers revel in. After around three hours and 25 km of heavy cycling with two short stops to fill our water bottles, we finally reached the Tagbirayan Beach Resort. Located in Barangay San Jose, Cagdianao, we found the place well into the night with help from a local guiding us on his motorbike to the hidden brown sugar beach.

There are three basic resorts along this beach and, having arrived in the dark, we chose to stay in the first one (rates are 350 Pesos for fan-room and 600 Pesos for aircon-room). Dirty, sweaty and hungry from our bike ride, we opted to shower (Filipino style tabo-tabo), eat (a lovely simple meal of grilled fish and rice) and sleep in our cosy but clean cabin, leaving the exploring for the following morning.

At first light we were greeted by the pretty, tranquil scene of a protected cove. Coconut trees sprout from the brown sand leaning into the calm waters of the bay.

Even on an overcast day, the scenery is worth taking in.

A simple Filipino breakfast of longanisa, eggs, vegetables, rice and of course 3 in 1 instant coffee.

As the day progresses however, you can’t help but be slightly bothered by the occasional noise of motorcycles on the road right next to you. And unless you are still charmed by the sounds of karaoke while relaxing on the beach, you might want to avoid coming on weekends. (Something to bear in mind with regards to most public beaches in the Philippines, actually.)

The municipality of Cagdianao is along the southern and eastern region of Dinagat Islands. The Barangay of San Jose (not to be confused with the capital where we began our journey) where Tagberayan Beach is a laid-back, small town on the eastern side of Dinagat Islands. With barely any internet service and the most unreliable of phone connections, it’s no wonder that this remote place is still a secret-ish destination, known only the more intrepid of backpackers looking to get away completely.

Tranquil waters and brown sugar sand

It can be reached by jeepney from the capital, but probably the best way to get to this part of Cagdianao at the moment is on motorbike, in order to discover the place as independently as possible. Keep in mind that the non-coastal roads throughout Dinagat Islands can be tricky and, especially during the rainy season from November to June (different to other areas in the Philippines), it might sometimes be difficult to use the still unfinished roads.

After some quiet beach time and ok snorkelling, we decided to head back to the municipality of San Jose, stopping by Dinagat town along the way. This is the oldest town on the islands and seemingly poorer than the others. It’s obvious not many travellers come through here as our visit to the sari-sari store for lunch drew some interest from the locals. We went from alone upon arrival to surrounded by the time we left.

Realising that most of these roads are bicycle-unfriendly, we decided to ride back to San Jose, the capital, and leave the pedal-powereds there for the rest of our Dinagat Islands adventure. We found no official motorcycle rental agencies so just asked around and struck up a deal with one of the locals. Tip: bring a motorbike along from the mainland if you can, or if you do manage to rent one on the island, make sure its capable of handling hills and rocky and muddy roads.

The next day, we took off and headed north through Basilisa and into Libjo. It was a long, tiring journey but with many pretty sights along the way.

Basilisa is known for Lalaking Bukid, the man shaped land formation incorporated into the legend of how Dinagat was born. Also of significant interest here is Lake Bababu which we did not get to go to this time around but look forward to seeing on our next visit.

The central road goes from being brand new in some parts to almost non-existent in others. Construction is evident throughout, and guesses as to when the approximately 80km long north to south highway will be completed vary depending on who you ask.

Libjo – Kisses Islets

Crystal clear waters, hidden beaches and limestone formations reminiscent of El Nido.

The town of Libjo itself is not exactly a tourist destination, more a jumping off point to get to the Kisses Islets and the secluded beaches surrounding them. It’s a relatively comfortable pump boat ride from the dock by the public market, depending on the season, and easy enough to organise with any of the local fishermen. Having visited during the Habagat season, our trip across was wavy enough to keep most other small vessels on shore. But once cruising through the waters that these jaw-dropping limestone formations project from, it was certainly well worth the one hour plus trip.

The scenery here reminds you of El Nido and even Koh Phi Phi, Thailand with one important exception…you are almost completely alone. Alone in the sense that there are no other tourists around, only the very occasional one man fishing boat or lone caretaker on a private beach. You get the feeling that you’ve discovered something special.

The shallow turquoise waters protected by these gorgeous little islets are calm and inviting. You can barely wait to jump off the banka and soak into the welcoming aquamarine. And perhaps if this were more developed, like El Nido, kayaks would be the ideal way to explore the islets. But for now, the easy swim (in some places) from one to the next with mask and snorkel isn’t bad either.

Accommodations available in Libjo include H2 Your Place Inn & Resto and Seaview Inn, both located on the main road of the town. And apart from the odd barbecue stall (which won’t be operating if it’s been raining), there isn’t much choice for food in Libjo. The locals mostly eat at home and the place is not yet set up for tourists. Don’t let the word “Resto” fool you into assuming that food is served at H2 Your Place; it isn’t or at least wasn’t at the time that we were there. With regards to accommodation though, we would recommend this over Seaview. There is no menu at Seaview Inn but the proprietors can prepare you an over-priced, highly seasoned, fatty meal, if you like. Other attractions in Libjo include the Quano Cave and Blue Lagoon.

The next day, it was back on the motorbike and again heading north. We rode through Tubajon and straight into the town of Loreto.

Upon arriving in Dinagat Islands’ northernmost municipality, you get a sense that here is a town more accustomed to visitors than other parts of the island. The mining industry is very evident here. With their head offices often in Manila and their buyers from China and Japan, it makes sense that there is an infrastructure set up to receive visitors at their base of operations. It has considerably more accommodation options – a couple of boarding houses and hotels that receive guests regularly, as well as Cups and Plates, a decent restaurant also offering rooms above it. It is a long tiring ride to get here as the roads, like in other parts of the island, are under construction.

Bonsai Forest, Loreto, Dinagat Islands

Loreto’s main claim to fame from a tourist perspective is the Bonsai Forest, thought to be the largest in the Philippines. However, a very important point to note before you make the trek out there is that it is not normally accessible to tourists. The mount that the forest sits on is owned by a few different companies actively mining chromite from it’s depths. As we learned when we arrived, special written permission has to be applied for and granted through the mining company’s head office in Manila in order to obtain access; a process which would take days. So the next few hours consisted of locating the local council officials and negotiating a way into the forest so that the arduous trip to the north of Dinagat would not be in vain.

By evening, after calls between officials and their contacts within the company, it was agreed and organised that we ‘d be picked up and driven to the forest the next morning. Sure enough and exactly on time, our chariot arrived and we were escorted by the barangay captain himself, along with company employees through the mining operations and onto the mountain top.

To be honest, after all the trouble it took to get here, I was initially a little disappointed. For a novice like me, it just looked like a pretty landscape covered in knee-high bushes. It wasn’t until after closer inspection that these “bushes” revealed themselves to be perfect miniature versions of the same full grown trees we’d seen at lower altitudes. That’s when I thought: “impressive!”

There was some fog that hid much of the scenery that morning but it was still worth the look.

Tubajon: adventures on a sub-standard motorbike

We left Loreto, started to head back down south through Tubajon intending to check out its Bat Sanctuary when we got a flat tire in the middle of nowhere. With not a house, let alone vulcanizer in sight, we were extremely lucky to stumble upon a group of miners who took time out of their lunch break to repair the tire with makeshift tools, expecting nothing in return. And on top of that, they were kind enough to invite us to share in their food.

After that 2 hour plus break, we were on our way again, opting to forego the bat sanctuary and negotiating our way down the rocky roads, fingers crossed that the temporary repair would hold, when suddenly we were struck by some heavy rains.

At this stage, we realised how an off-road motocross bike would have been more appropriate than the one person city bike with bald tires that we hired for the very hilly and now slippery clay roads. But hey, beggars can’t be choosers and as, on many occasions, one of us had to get off the bike while the other negotiated it though super slippery hills, we had to laugh and remind ourselves that it is all part of the adventure.

The laughing stopped when the rain and roads got so bad that we decided to find some accommodation and bunker down for the rest of the day and overnight. Finding out that our list of available accommodations was out of date, it was back to Libjo for the night. At this stage, the bike’s chain also decided to give way, so the overnight stay became a necessity.

The next day, we got on the road again heading back to San Jose for our last days on Dinagat Islands. The laughing resumed when we had to buy this bright blue plastic children’s raincoat for the ride.

On our third and final time in the capital, we managed to get to know it a little better and gained some affection for it’s hilly roads, panoramic views and friendly people. Signs of the PBMA (the Philippine Benevolent Missionary Association) are more prevalent here than anywhere else on the islands. With their founder’s shrine and castle dominating the vista, its hard to ignore. But despite the air of mystery that shrouds the secret handshakes, members’ signet rings and ceremonial whites, they are open and happy to talk about their beliefs if you are interested enough to ask.

Mayor Danny took us on some pleasant walks through the town at night and to a couple of good eateries. Habal-habals are also available though and recommended if you struggle walking up the steeper roads.

Tourism on the islands

Tourists are still somewhat of a novelty in Dinagat, but this is slowly changing. And although the locals can initially be shy, we found them to be friendly and even eager to invite us to meals at their homes. The infrastructure to cater to visitors is far from set up and in some areas completely non existent, which of course lends Dinagat the charms that adventurous travellers are in search of. However, the tourism office is actively working on plans to welcome more tourists and encourage investment in an ecologically balanced manner.

And with Dinagat Islands’ abundance of appealing destinations, the well-received triathlon it hosted last year, and the eventual completion of its main road, it won’t be too long before this gem is ‘discovered’.

My friends and I are planning to go to Dinagat Island later this year. There are tour packages available but they don’t include the bonsai forest since it is under private management. Can you recommend a contact/local that can give us access to the forest? We’d really love to do a highland to island tour of Dinagat!

When we visited a few years ago now, we were fortunate enough to meet, by chance, with a barangay official who facilitated our tour (we no longer have their contact details). But normally, you would have to contact the head office of one of those mining companies ahead of time (I think there are 3 or 4 that operate in the bonsai zone) to get clearance. I’ve probably said this so many times here in my blog, “this _____ is one of the best island I’ve seen in the Philippines “. Honestly, every single time I tick a province off my list I just keep realizing that Philippines is made of 7,000+ pieces of heaven on Earth. There’s no denying that if you travel around the country with your backpack on, you’ll keep stumbling onto new islands that will capture your heart. And Dinagat Islands is one of those provinces that I’m lucky to have stumbled onto. (Dinagat Islands DIY)

About Dinagat Islands

Dinagat Islands is located West of Siargao and North of Surigao City — a group of islands constituting a province in the Caraga region in the Philippines. The language spoken are Surigaonon , Cebuano and the local dialect of Dinagatnon . Tagalog is not common in the island province which makes it a bit hard to communicate to some locals in the area.

The best time to go here is during the summer season in North-East Mindanao which is from February – June . As per a local friend I met here, typhoon start from the months of November – January.

How to go to Dinagat Islands DIY way

The closest airport will be Surigao Airport and Butuan Airport (BXU). Whichever airport you come from, you need to go to Surigao Port to get to Dinagat Islands as there are no humanitarian airports in the island province.

Outside the airport of Butuan, there are van transportation available going to Surigao City for Php460.00/person and travel time is 2-3 hours. Make sure to ask the van conductors that you are going to Surigao City. From Surigao City, ride a tric/multicab going to Surigao Port. Fare is Php30-50.00.

From Surigao Port, ride a ferry bounfd to San Jose Port in Dinagat Islands. Travel time is 1 hour and fare is Php180.00, while terminal fee is Php10.00. There are lots of ferry and shipping lines bound to Dinagat. For instance, Montenegro Shipping Lines offers daily and hourly departure which starts at 4:30am until 5:30pm only.

I highly suggest to book homestays in San Jose since you will be arriving there from the port. Here are a few homestays near San Jose port in Dinagat:

• Along D Road Homestay – rate starts at Php1,500.00 good for 2 person (AC room)
• Rose Pink Lodge – rate start at Php500.00 per night good for 2 person
• Come & Lodge @ Sofia’s Bed – rate starts at Php800.oo per night good for 2 person (AC room)

How to Get Around in Dinagat Islands

Take note that there are no jeepneys in Dinagat. The main transportation in Dinagat is a bao-bao tricycle. Fare starts at Php10.00/each for short trips around San Jose. Contact Kuya Alon at 09076102770 for bao-bao tricycle service. Take note that there are lots of drivers who likes to scam non-residents as soon as you arrive at the port. Make sure to contact Kuya Alon prior your visit to avoid unfortunate events.

Places To Visit in Dinagat Islands

Visiting the island province after typhoon Odette’s catastrophe made a huge impact during our travel. For instance, (1) the rate of boat rentals went up, (2) some resorts are still closed due to the damages, and (3) our mother nature is still in the process of healing. Wrecks were everywhere, palm trees were like match sticks from afar, houses and establishments were damaged as well.

We managed to rent a boat for our island hopping for 2 days for Php6,500.00 good for 4-8 people. The trip covers Libjo on the 1st day and Basilisa on the 2nd day. Our pick up point is in San Jose Public Market, beside the docking area of the pump boats.

Libjo Island Hopping

• Hagakhak Rock Formation
• Pangabangan Tidal Pool
• Punta Buena Suerte
• Kisses Islet
• RSG Resort with Cave Pool

The best part of the Libjo tour is Pangabangan Tidal Pool ! The entrance fee is Php20.00. If you plan to do an overnight here, make sure to bring your own tents as there are no rooms available here, no electricity and no water. Day tour cottage is Php1,000.00 and overnight cottage is Php1,500.00.

RSG resort entrance fee is Php50.00 and to enter the cave pool is Php250.00. The water is about 3-4 meters during low tide season and 5-6 meters during high tide season.

Basilisa Island Hopping

• Jelmar’s Beach Resort
• Lake Bababu & Bababu Beach
• Duyos Beach
• Pagkawasan beach
• Cabacungan Cove
• Bitaog Beach

Jelmar’s is the place to be if you’re looking for a budget overnight stay during the island hopping tour. Entrance fee at Jelmar’s is Php20.00, overnight cottage is Php1,000.00 and tent rental is Php250.00. There’s a kitchen you can use, activities like swimming, snorkeling, freediving, kayaking, and karaoke .

Lake Bababu requires a 30-45-minute hike from Bababu beach. The tour guide fee is Php300.00 for the whole group and entrance fee is Php50.00 each. After hiking the Lake Bababu, you can go back and do some swimming and snorkeling in front of Bababu beach.

The name “ Duyos ” means a pice of land that rises and sinks depending on the tides. Hence the name of the beach. This beach is also perfect for photoshoot because there is a small islet in front of it.

Our last island to visit was the white beach of Pagkawasan Beach. It’s another island that looks like Palawan’s islands because of the limestones features, caves, and coconut palm trees. There is an area where you can do cliff jumping at 5-15 feet.

San Jose Land Tour

If you have more time in Dinagat Islands, you can go around San Jose and visit some of its attractions.

• Islander’s Castle – the castle is owned by the Ecleo family and they govern the island province as well. The castle can be seen during island hopping trips because it’s on top of the mountain. To get here, you can ride a bao-bao from San Jose to take you here. The fare is Php20.00 each.

• Angat Dinagat Landmark
• New West Virginia View Deck
• San Jose Beach, Santa Cruz Beach, and Lawis Beach

Freediving Spots in Dinagat Islands

Tips From Joan’s Footprints (Dinagat Islands DIY)

• Do not ride tricycles outside Surigao port. These drivers harass their passengers and charge unreasonable fare. I highly advise that once you got out from the port, ignore these tricycle drivers and walk 2-3 streets away. From there you can hire a tricycle to take you where you wanna go.
• If you are riding a bao-bao in San Jose port, locals speak Dinagatnon . Make sure to contact my recommended local tour guide in Dinagat Islands Kuya Alon at 09076102770 to avoid getting scammed.
• Book your tour in advance. I advise to contact island hopping tours beforehand.

Top 10 Things To Do in Dinagat Islands, Philippines

Dinagat Islands is the next top must-visit tourist destination of the Philippines yet to be discovered. It consists of 7 municipalities namely Loreto, Libjo, Basilisa, Tubajon, Cagdianao, Dinagat and San Jose. A lot has been improving in this progressive province since its creation in 2006. Apart from newly constructed roads, hotels and ports, there will be a plan in the future to improve internet connectivity and build an airport. Currently, the nearest gateway to the province is by riding a ship from Surigao City (travel time is about an hour).

Here are the Top 10 Things You Can Do in Dinagat Islands, Philippines!

1.) Meet the People of Dinagat Islands

In my week-long stay, I have enjoyed the gentleness of its people. I have met most of them through my stay with Ms. Lulu Gilmore (the girl from the United States who was prophesied by a religious group to bring prosperity to Dinagat), Kuya Nols Nolli Redula (baranggay councilor of San Jose), Aura Chekadora (famous influencer in Dinagat Islands) and Raden Docena (bao-bao driver who toured me around Brgy. San Jose).

2.) Islander’s Castle

The so-called Islander’s Castle is one of the only few castles in the Philippines which can definitely compete with other castles of the world. It is situated on top of the mountain with an amazing view of the bluish waters and greenish hills of Dinagat. It is the home of the famous ex-governor of Dinagat Islands Mama Glenda Ecleo. Many still wonder what the interiors of the castle look like as not all would have entry access to the property. (Swipe photo for more pictures)

3.) Divine Master’s Shrine

The Divine Master’s Shrine is not only flocked by the followers of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association Inc. and the Rubenian International Inc. It is also flocked by curious tourists visiting Dinagat. The shrine houses the remains of the Divine Master Ruben Ecleo Sr. His charisma and ability to “heal” drew followers from the Philippines and the World. His organizations were formed with an intent “to promote national and international peace and unity; preach and practice the virtue of benevolence by being charitable, giving voluntarily, helping generously, serving faithfully, without discrimination or distinction as to race, religion or nationality.” (Swipe photo for more pictures)

Dinagat Islands Travel Guide

Dinagat islands overview.

Formerly a part of the province of Surigao del Norte ,   Dinagat Islands officially became a province in 2006, composed of 7 municipalities. It is the third newest province in the Philippines (2006), with Maguindanao del Sur as the newest (2022). The tourism infrastructure in the province is not yet well-developed and the main attractions on the island province are mainly by boat. There are a few tour operators on the island but I can assure you that the atmosphere in Dinagat Islands is very laid-back – a calm place, with cool and nice people. This is one of the few provinces in the Philippines  that I have been to that is very rural and the province life is what makes them happy.

Simple living in the islands is one of the main highlights I have observed and fishing or aquaculture is one of their main sources of livelihood (aside from the island tours some locals offer). They are more ventured into nature tourism because of their numerous island hopping attractions and natural places that are definitely pleasing to the eye.

Best Time to go to Dinagat Islands

Since the Philippines only has two predominant seasons (wet and dry), the province of Dinagat Islands is best visited during the peak of the Dry (Summer) Season from April until the wee months of the wet (monsoon) season until September . During these months, the waters are calmer and the weather is more bearable and rainfall is just spotted on some occasions. It is also the perfect time to explore its neighboring province of Southern Leyte if you want to discover the Visayas or go to Siargao Island if you want to catch the Pacific waves. The average temperature in the province is 24°C – 29°C.

How to get to Dinagat Islands

The nearest and most accessible airport from Dinagat Islands is the Surigao Airport (SUG) in Surigao City. You can also go and hop into the Sayak Airport (IAO) in Del Carmen, Siargao Island but boat transfers to Siargao from Dinagat are quite limited. Surigao City is approximately 1 hour away from Dinagat Islands (San Jose Port). Tricycle fare from the airport to Surigao Boulevard Port (Pantalan Dos) costs ₱ 20-30 and the travel time is around 15-20 minutes.

Passenger boats and barges are the main means of getting to the province of Dinagat Islands through their main ports (San Jose, Dinagat, and Cagdianao). Boats along Surigao Boulevard are easily spotted and unfortunately, they only have a makeshift terminal (a table, basically) for you to register on before riding the boat to Dinagat Islands. The fare is around ₱ 200 and the travel time is 1 hour (to San Jose Port).

Things to know about Dinagat Islands

Dinagat Islands is one of the smallest provinces in the Philippines and only has an area of 1,036.34 km², smaller than the whole of Surigao del Norte. The people in the province predominantly speak Cebuano and Surigaonon (in some areas of Dinagat and Cagdianao), and they can also speak Filipino and English (for foreign guests).

The cellular signal on the island is quite poor to none, especially for Globe and TM users. Smart and TNT users can have poor to fair signals in some areas and in the island resorts found within Basilisa and Libjo. To address the scarcity of cellular signal in the province, “Piso-WiFi” is also evident in the municipalities’ poblacions. You can connect to someone’s Piso-WiFi for as low as ₱ 1 for 10-15 minutes.

The mode of payment in Dinagat Islands is cash only . I advise you to bring enough cash before visiting the province. The main currency used in Dinagat Islands is the Philippine Peso (PH₱).

Exploring around Dinagat Islands

Getting in and around the Islands is challenging as they have a limited transportation system. Only bao-baos, tricycles, motorbikes, and motorboats are the modes of transportation in the province. Traffic congestion is not a problem here as their highways are wide and only a few people travel within the seven towns of the province. The minimum fare around Dinagat Islands is about ₱ 20-35, depending on the destination.

Top Reasons to visit DINAGAT ISLANDS

Little has been known about the Dinagat Islands if the general public from Luzon would speak. Apart from being one of the newest provinces of the Philippines, Dinagat Islands has been on traditional media just because of a clan that made it their political stronghold. Usual news was usually about issues against the clan. But beyond this varying news, Dinagat Islands keeps its pristine beauty from the eyes of the general public. Within its micro-archipelagic boundaries, lies a number of picturesque islands, clean lakes, virgin forests, breathtaking views, and amazing white beaches. Its quiet state has long protected these landscapes and seascapes away from the inquisitive eyes of the domestic travelling community. It would be one of the least chosen destinations but having visited there for two days, I would like to share these reasons why you should explore Dinagat Islands. Generally, I would describe it as the fusion of Hundred Islands of Pangasinan, Karst Cliffs of Coron, Beaches of Boracay and reach marine life of Batangas, all straddled together in one promising destination.

IT IS THE VIRGIN VERSION OF THE FAMOUS SIARGAO

Many have already set foot in Siargao, thanks to a film that brought that paradise to the limelight. Siargao had already developed its fair share of the tourism market. Little that many do not know lies near the shores of Siargao is the mini archipelagic province of Dinagat Islands. This new province features almost the same natural wonders of other mainstream tourism destinations, sans the crowd and tourists. There are also much fewer commercial developments there, tourism activities are managed by locals instead of the oligarchs or foreign operators.

LESS CROWDED WHITE BEACHES AT PAGKAWASAN BEACH

We have visited many white beaches in a day, most often, we own the area. We were the only group at that place. We only hear mother nature and its amazing symphony running through our ears. We trampled around its compact white sand beach against the clear turquoise waters and ran around the shadows of tall coconut trees. We discovered its karst walls leading to a view deck.

TOWERING KARST WALLS AT CABACONGAN BEACH

We have enjoyed various karst formations in Palawan, with a huge fleet of tourist boats around you. Dinagat Islands also boasts of its own karst cliffs, but somehow, taller. The wall particularly in Cabacongan Beach features at least a hundred meters sheer height with a colossal cave opening above us. I could imagine the colony of bats exiting upon sunset.

EXPLORE ITS OWN BLUE HOLE – PANGABANGAN TIDAL POOL

It was an alternating rainy and sunny climate during our visit in Dinagat Islands. It was about to rain when we docked at Libjo, rain clouds above us, shrouding the remaining rays of the noontime sun. The white sandy beach was covered with thick green grass, a rare sight for me. From the docking area is about a 5-minute short hike to the shores where we would see the blue hole. We were astounded by the clear waters and a chance to explore the tidal pool on a floating makeshift raft, however, the drizzle continues. We discovered a trail to upwards to a cliff leading to a view deck with a commanding view of the lagoon. It is too is an easy climb and we exchanged places to have a quick snap. This for me is my best Dinagat Island experience.

IT WON’T COST YOU MUCH

Unlike its neighbouring touristy and mainstream Siargao, the cost of touring around Dinagat Island is not that expensive. There are many boatmen you can charter and meet halfway on the agreed payment. The accommodations too are at rock-bottom prices. The meals we bought are pocket savers. I wished we could have explored more of this paradise.

CRAZY SUNSET

When we arrived back in San Jose proper, the ever-glorious sun starts to dance above the horizon and sends its burst of golden rays splattering warmth all around us. The sky burned dark orange and the trees sway against the golden hour. The cool misty salty breeze rushed ashore as we marvelled at the sinking radius of the golden disk from afar. Soon, the sky turned mauve and houses nestled in the sloping town of San Jose starts to twinkle with artificial lights, signalling, it is about time to rest.

EXPLORE THE MANSION

On our second day on the island, we chose the explore the mansion grounds owned by a prominent clan there. We hired a motorcycle to bring us there. At the gate, we are instructed to don long pants for modesty purposes, since the sect managing the grounds believes the site to be sacred. We walked around, checking its amazing garden, the mansion facade and the view deck offering amazing views of the sea below. It was a short visit since we need to catch the ferry taking us back to Surigao proper.

WILL I EVER RETURN?

Definitely! Dinagat Islands has more beaches, lakes, rivers, summits, trails and culture to learn and experience. Despite that it has no direct connectivity to the capital Manila, the multiple transfers itself is already an adventure added to your experience of the islands.

HOW TO GO THERE?

From Manila, take flights to Butuan. From Butuan, take bus or van to Surigao. At the terminal in Surigao, charter a tricycle to bring you to the port bound to Dinagat Island.

From Cebu, you can take a flight direct to Surigao. From the airport, charter tricycle to bring you to the port for Dinagat Islands.

Exploring DINAGAT ISLANDS: the Underrated and Mystical Province of CARAGA

One of the least known provinces in the Philippines lies at the northeastern part of Mindanao: Dinagat Islands . Some people actually think it’s not a province but just an island where travelers can go to. Others even call it Dinagat Island (yes, without s) for a reason: it is not yet widely known. Travel bloggers in recent years have tried to change that, and this blog is my attempt to help make Dinagat Islands something Filipinos (and non-Filipinos) would try to visit and travel to.

Albeit one of the newest provinces in the country, Dinagat Islands has a rich history that predates the Spanish occupation when it was already considered a holy place. During the Spanish times, the settlements in the island province became a result of migration of people from Bohol and Leyte. It then served an important role during the World War 2.

With a total land area of 1,036.34 sq km, Dinagat Islands is one of the smallest provinces in the country. It comprises of 7 municipalities, home to 128,117 Dinagatnon (as of the year 2020). Most people of the province speak the Cebuano language, while those who live in the islands near Leyte can speak Waray-Waray. Many Dinagatnon also speak Surigaonon, Tagalog and English so you won’t have to worry if you’re traveling here.

The province may be most popularly known for the religion founded in it: the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA). Its former governor, Ruben Ecleo Sr., established the non-sectarian organization in the early 1960s. Called the “Divine Master” by his followers, Ecleo saw PBMA’s membership grow as he “healed” the people from the island province. According to this article, it was in 1967 when he used his influence to break into the political scene, and until now, his family has a hold in the Dinagat Islands’s elective posts.

Now, let’s take a look at some of the travel spots you can visit here in Dinagat Islands!

Hagakhak Rock Formations

Still relatively unknown compared to other travel destinations in Dinagat Islands, these rock formations have beautiful patterns comparable to the rock formations of Biri and Burias. Nestled in the historic Surigao Strait, Hagakhak Rock Formation can be reached via boat from the port of San Jose in 30 minutes. It was the first travel destination that we visited during our Dinagat Islands tour.

We looked around the rock formations when we got there. I saw an altar, and it somehow pleased me that there’s one out here to show reverence to the Virgin Mary. It’s like she’s looking after the island where these rock formations can be found.

Blue Lagoon / Ao Beach Resort

This beautiful natural wonder is one of the amazing places you can visit in the province of Dinagat Islands. It is adjacent to Pangabangan Island that has this small strip of white sand and is surrounded by limestone cliffs.

FEELING THE MOMENT: I sometimes close my eyes and just feel the moment of being where I am when I travel. I don’t know but it’s like I wanted that delightful feeling I was experiencing to linger – a rare chance during our busy, fast-paced lives. One of the nicest things in this trip is that we had the place all to ourselves so it’s extra peaceful and calm, which is how I want it.

Jelmar’s Resort

Resort in an islet? Check! This travel destination in Dinagat is best for families and friends who want to experience a whole day of fun or even a memorable overnight stay in the coastline. Upon arrival and while walking on its wooden platform, we immediately heard a clash of singing voices! Haha. Apparently, there’s another resort nearby.

The resort is surrounded by these rocky cliffs found at the coastline of Basilisa. Wondering how’s the view on top? Let’s see!

It took us about five minutes to go up the view point. It was actually rushed, which means If you’d go up here in a more casual manner, it would probably take you ten to fifteen minutes. Be warned, too, that there are pointy rocks here so be extra careful shall you go.

The view on top is definitely beautiful! I just think, though, that it would be more beautiful at sunset.

This resort is one of the many places in the province that were gravely affected by Typhoon Odette last December 2021. It’s really great to know they’re rebuilding and rising up again!

RSG Compe Beach Resort

There’s a beach resort in Libijo that’s called RSG Compe Munting Paraiso (“Little Paradise”). It isn’t a typical resort because it doesn’t only have a small strip of creamy sand beach and swimming pools with a great view of the sea, it also has a cave pool! Swimming in the cave pool is one of the highlights of our trip in Dinagat Islands!

We weren’t able to take a photo or video of the inside of this small cavern but it was definitely an extraordinary experience! Lights here are operated by a generator, which is where the fees paid by the visitors go.

This is what a part of the resort looks like from the outside. Just like the other resorts in the province, they’re slowly but surely rebuilding after the onslaught of Typhoon Odette. Here are some of the views from RSG Compe Beach resort. I just love how clear and cool the water is here.

Lake Bababu

This lake is one of the beautiful places we were able to visit while in Dinagat Islands. After exploring the travel spots in the town of Libjo, we went back to Basilisa to experience and witness this must-see place!

Bababu Lake is a meromitic lake, which means a lake with layers of water that do not intermix. It appears that there is an underwater cave system here that connects the fresh water of the lake and the salt water of the sea. The said underwater cave is considered one of the longest in the country. Interesting, right? These information made me a lot more curious about Bababu!

There’s a trail that would guide visitors going to the lake. The time going there would depend on how fast you hike. Our guide said we could reach it in 30 minutes. We wanted to reach it faster because it was already late in the afternoon.

Now here’s the view when we were returning to the town of San Jose. See the structure on top of the terrain? Guess what that is on the comments section!

By the way, the port used for boats of travel tours is located beside San Jose’s public market. It is different from San Jose Port where ferries to and from Surigao City load and unload.

PBMA Shrine

Also called the Divine Master’s Shrine, this shrine of the PBMA is located up in the hills of Bgy. Aurelio in San Jose. Considered to be sacred grounds of the Dinagatnons, visitors of the place must follow a dress code before they could enter the premises. When our habal-habal reached the shrine’s gate, we had to go to the “security office” and rent for P20 a pair of loose pants that we can wear while touring inside. The pants are too big, which is why if you want to look good in your pictures, better come here wearing following their dress code. Males are expected to wear a shirt, pants and closed shoes, while for females, skirts and closed shoes are required while no sleeveless shirts are allowed.

Islander’s Castle

Built in 2007, the palatial house of the Ecleos called Islander’s Castle was constructed by then governor Glenda Ecleo. It was said to have cost P350 million, which was reportedly sourced from mineral production sharing agreements as the island province was abundant with chromite. The Ecleo family may see it as a monument to show how Dinagatnons love and respect the “Divine Master” and his wife, but the others don’t. The castle provides a great contrast to the majority of the province’s population, which remains poor. How about you? What do you think?

How to go to Dinagat Islands?

Dinagat Islands can be reached via ferry or passenger pump boat (also called fast craft) coming from Surigao City, the capital of Surigao del norte. It is the primary transportation going to Dinagat as it is an island province. The earliest schedule of the fast craft from Surigao City going to San Jose, Dinagat Islands is from 5 to 6 AM, and travel time is about 1 to 1.5 hour. The last trip is early afternoon at around 2 to 3 pm. You can check their Facebook account to be updated about changes in their trip schedule.

How can you go to Surigao City if you’re coming from other places? Let’s find out.

If you’re coming from Manila, take the plane going to Butuan City. From Butuan Airport (Bacasi Airport), hail a taxi or multicab going to the bus terminal in Langihan where you can ride a bus going straight to Surigao City.

If you’re coming from Davao City, take the bus or van in Ecoland Bus Terminal and ride for __ hours going to Surigao City.

Where to stay in Dinagat Islands

There’s a lot of accommodation available in the island province! If you’re searching for a budget accommodation that is suitable for travelers, you may want to contact Amas Ra Homestay. For P700, you can stay in a small but air-conditioned room that is already good for 2 pax with comfort room. Isn’t that a good deal? Plus, there are a few restaurants around Amas Ra that you can go to if you’re feeling hungry! Most restaurants and stores are concentrated in San Jose Port, but if you don’t want to spend more by riding the tricycle going there, you can just opt to walk and find these restaurants around the area of Amas Ra.

There are resorts in the province you may opt to choose from especially if you’re going to stay for a few days here. You may check Cape Seaductive Resort & Spa, which is located near the coastline. It may be farther from San Jose Port, but the view you can have in the resort may just be well worth it!

hi, do you need to have a boat to visit around the island ? Kasi if im planning to go there sa nov, which is maalon daw

There are many tourist spots that you don’t need to rent a boat in order to visit. It would take a longer time to go in those places, though kasi nasa ibang parts sila ng mainland. Siguro ask their tourism office if it’s safe to travel by boat when you get there. Marami rin kasing kailangan talagang magbangka para mapuntahan. 🙂

MinDA and Dinagat Islands bind to boost economic development

Davao City, Philippines – The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) and the Provincial Government of Dinagat Islands on June 27, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to boost the economic development of the islands.

The agreement aims to establish Economic Zones (EZs) in Dinagat Islands, designed to attract local and foreign investments, create jobs, and alleviate poverty in the province.

The MoC, which focuses on technical assistance, capacity building, and information exchange, was signed by MinDA Chairperson Secretary Leo Tereso A. Magno and Dinagat Islands Governor Nilo P. Demerey Jr. This vision is aligned with MinDA’s Mindanao Agenda 2022-2028, which emphasizes sustainable development and economic integration within the ASEAN region.

Governor Demerey Jr. highlighted the “i2 FAME” strategy, targeting innovation and industrialization in the fisheries, agroforestry, mining, and ecotourism sectors. Secretary Magno emphasized MinDA’s role in coordinating efforts and promoting investments aligned with national development goals.

“This partnership is a significant milestone in Dinagat Islands’ journey towards socio-economic development,” said Demerey. “By leveraging strategic partnerships and integrated planning, we aim to uplift the region and create a more prosperous future for our people.”

Secretary Magno added, “MinDA is committed to supporting the Dinagat Islands through coordinated efforts that promote sustainable investments. This MoC will pave the way for economic zones that will bring substantial benefits to the local community.”

The signing of this MoC marks a critical milestone in the socio-economic development of Dinagat Islands, leveraging strategic partnerships and integrated planning to uplift the region.

The Dinagat Islands, are endowed with a variety of natural resources and economic assets.

Here are some of the key resources of the Dinagat Islands:

Natural Resources

• Nickel and Chromite : The islands are known for their significant deposits of nickel and chromite, which are the main minerals extracted in the region.
• Other Minerals : There are also deposits of gold, silver, and iron.
• The islands have forested areas that provide timber and non-timber forest products, such as rattan and bamboo.
