The SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector is one of the few protectors we tested that never failed, staying completely waterproof through 10 cycles of washing and drying and two leak tests. It’s affordable and highly recommended in user reviews (and from our staffers who’ve owned it). We think it’s great for a child’s bed, and we recommend having at least two on hand to swap out if needed. The cotton/polyester terry top is a little noisy and it’s scratchier than pricier quilted protectors, but we don’t think that’s a big deal because it goes underneath the sheets, not against the skin. The SafeRest comes in twin to California king sizes.

Although fitted protectors are better at staying put on the bed, waterproof pads are easier to add or remove and simpler to wash because they’re smaller. Of the three we looked at, the Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector is the only pad that aced our leak tests. Available in three sizes (none as big as a twin mattress), it’s a great option if you need concentrated leak protection for one side of the bed. The Priva is backed with vinyl, and though the manufacturer says the vinyl is phthalate-free , we were unable to get independent, third-party verification of this at the time of this writing. For children and pregnant women, we recommend the polyurethane Linenspa protector.

Though it’s not as effective at fending off leaks for as long as the Priva pad, the Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector is backed with polyurethane, which doesn’t pose the potential developmental health risks that vinyl does, so we think it’s a better bet for kids and pregnant women. It stayed waterproof through some of our testing, but will need to be replaced more frequently than the Priva (probably at least once during a child’s potty training years). The Linenspa is comfy to sleep on, comes in three sizes, and is convenient to have on hand for intense, short-term needs, like potty training, sick days with kids, or travel.

The research

I’ve written many guides for Wirecutter, including reviews of sheets , robes , towels , and blankets . I’ve also been through tough potty training as a mom, and have had several waterproof mattress protectors fail. It’s frustrating and expensive, so I researched and tested these protectors for what I wish I’d had (and known) when we were going through it.

If you want to prevent leaks or spills from ruining your mattress, you probably need a mattress protector—a waterproof pad or fitted sheet that goes on top of your mattress. A protector is not only helpful when you’re potty training kids, it can also defend your mattress against spilled beverages, sweat, adult incontinence, pet accidents, and other bodily fluids. If you want to protect yourself from bedbug infestations and dust mite allergies you should instead consider a mattress encasement (which seals the mattress inside).

We spoke to Jamie Glowacki —potty training educator and author of Oh Crap! Potty Training —about protecting a mattress during potty training. Shannon Palus, author of several Wirecutter guides, spoke to Lakelyn Hogan, a gerontologist and caregiver advocate for Home Instead Senior Care , about what to consider when caring for elderly relatives. Harrison King, VP of engineering and quality at manufacturer American Textile Company , told us why waterproof protectors sometimes fail.

We spoke to experts, read user reviews and parenting blogs, and talked to our staff to find out what the most important features are in a mattress protector. We checked Amazon’s top sellers, took recommendations from our staff, researched offerings from bedding companies whose products we’ve tested in the past, and looked at protectors in stores, compiling a list of 36 products.

Our research helped us to determine the following criteria that make a great mattress protector:

Durable protection: A protector should stop leaks from reaching your mattress. Surprisingly, we found many user reviews complaining about protectors failing to do this, even out of the package. They also have a limited life span. If you wash and dry one enough times, the waterproofing will fail. According to King, one reason for this is the breakdown of the adhesive that attaches the polyurethane—the waterproof material used in many protectors—to the fabric top. “Different adhesives have varying levels of durability,” he said, “and some degrade more quickly.” Frequent washing, and drying on high heat, can accelerate that degradation. “Leading retailers require independent testing that proves effectiveness after multiple (5+) launderings,” King said. You could easily blow through five washes in a month potty training a toddler. King also noted that thinner, less effective laminates are sometimes used because they’re less stiff and make less noise. We looked for protectors with the most positive reviews, and we used staff feedback for our test picks wherever possible.

Safe materials: In our research we noted many concerns from parents about vinyl protectors, although one manufacturer told us its vinyl protectors are more waterproof than its polyurethane options. There is evidence that phthalates (added to some plastics, including PVC vinyl) can cause health problems in pregnant women and children, and several phthalates are restricted from use in products aimed at kids. Wherever possible we looked at materials like polyurethane and natural fibers first, and then also considered vinyl if it was phthalate-free.

Fitted and pad protectors: We focused on fitted and pad protectors because they received the highest user reviews. Fitted protectors look like a fitted sheet with a waterproof top and stretchy jersey sides. They provide good protection, and don’t shift on the bed. Pads are smaller and don’t attach to the bed (and thus can shift more). They’re better for targeted spills, potty training, and bed sharing because you can swap them in and out more easily. We passed on pads with elastic straps at the corners, like the toddler-bed-size ones at IKEA , because they didn’t get great reviews. We also looked at mattress encasements, which go around the entire mattress, but they’re generally better for protecting against bedbugs or dust mites .

Comfortable: Because these protectors are a barrier between your sheets and your mattress, we wanted to make sure they felt good to sleep on. No overheating, no bunching, no sliding around on the bed. We paid attention to complaints of discomfort in user reviews.

A wide range of sizes: A mattress protector is helpful for any size bed, so we looked for models that come in a range of sizes, including crib and California king.

Affordable price: It’s handy to own more than one protector for a bed, so you can swap out a clean one at any hour without needing to do laundry right away. We focused on protectors that were affordable enough (less than $50 for a queen) to buy multiples. We considered more expensive protectors if user reviews indicated they perform well and offer extra comfort to be worth the additional investment.

Based on this criteria, we brought in 14 protectors to test. We measured each, then washed and dried them five times, following the care instructions on each label. Next we measured them again and calculated any shrinkage, and we laid them out for our first leak test.

For the leak tests, we placed a thick layer of paper towels under a specific spot in each protector and then poured 2 cups of water with food coloring on that spot. We weighted the wet section down with a 1-pound bag of beans and left the protectors alone for an hour to see if any liquid would soak through. Then we removed the paper towels and noted any moisture that had leaked through. We also felt the backs of the protectors for wetness.

Only the protectors that were bone dry after this first test moved on, and the list narrowed from 14 protectors to six. We washed and dried them all five more times and repeated the liquid tests, but we left them soaking for two hours this time. After the second leak test, three protectors were left completely dry.

We then slept a night each on those three protectors to assess how comfortable they were to use.

The SafeRest Premium Mattress Protector was one of only three protectors we tested that stayed waterproof through all our testing. Its thin, soft material makes it more comfortable to sleep on than most of the protectors we considered, and it doesn’t bunch like our pad picks. The SafeRest is easier to wash than our upgrade pick, and it dries faster than any of our other picks. Like most of the protectors we considered, it comes in a wide range of sizes (including twin XL and California king), and it’s more affordable than other protectors we tested that didn’t perform as well in our tests.

The SafeRest is the thinnest of all our picks, but in our testing it was one of only three whose waterproofing held completely after 10 cycles of machine washing warm and drying on low, leaving the back of the protector and the layer of paper towels underneath completely dry. The top is constructed of a cotton/polyester-blend terry with polyurethane laminated backing.

We liked that the SafeRest didn’t add extra weight or bulk under the sheets, like many pads and quilted protectors do, and that it can be stretched virtually as smooth and taut as the sheets on the bed. The terry texture doesn’t show through sheets either. We didn’t notice it through the night, and it didn’t make us overheat.

The SafeRest feels more like a sheet than the thicker, stiffer protectors we tried. This made it easier to wash than the more expensive protectors in our test group. Even the king size we tested fits in the machine with other wash, while higher-end protectors, made with quilted layers of material, must be machine washed alone. The stains from our leak tests came out easily in the wash (our upgrade pick took a few tries), and this protector dried quickly.

The SafeRest fits true to size on a king bed. It also shrank the least of our picks (only about 0.5 percent on average, compared with 2.6 percent for The Company Store’s quilted protector and 1.2 percent for the Priva pad). The SafeRest is intended for use on mattresses up to 14 inches deep, and we tested it on a 10-inch foam mattress but didn’t notice much excess fabric along the sides when making the bed.

Like most of the mattress protectors we considered, the SafeRest could fail over time. We’ll long-term test it to see how long the waterproofing lasts. This protector also comes with a 10-year warranty . A few of our staffers have used and recommend the SafeRest, and online reviewers note that it can survive lots of urine , is breathable , and fits mattress depths of 12 to 14 inches . Some write that it has lasted well over a year , even with weekly washing . For the price (about a quarter of the cost of our upgrade pick for queen size) we think the SafeRest is an all-around great value.

We noticed that this protector seems to have a lot of fake reviews on Amazon, and for the twin and full sizes it has a C rating on Fakespot (the reviews for the queen and king sizes get a B rating). Because some of our staff have used this protector successfully, we decided to include it in testing. As with most of the waterproof protectors we considered, there are reviews noting it failed to protect the mattress from leaks and spills. Verified negative reviews noted that it’s not breathable , and that it’s noisy to sleep on. It is thin and thus tends to move and rustle more than our other picks, but it didn’t bother us while we slept.

The Priva Ultra Plus Sheet Protector is easier to use than our main pick for quick bed changes because it’s a pad and not a fitted protector. You can place it under the sheets, or use it on top of the fitted sheet, precluding the need to strip the bed if it gets soiled. But it won’t protect your entire bed, like our main pick, and it’s more likely to bunch up than a fitted pad. We also don’t recommend this pad for kids or pregnant women, because of the vinyl backing.

We tested three pads, and the Priva was the only one that retained its waterproof ability through all of our tests. It’s softer than our top pick, with a thicker, quilted surface, and it’s almost as easy to launder—it took a little longer to dry than the SafeRest—because of its smaller size. It’s also nice if you sleep with a partner and need extra protection on only one side of the bed, rather than the full-bed protection of our top and upgrade picks.

The Priva’s top is a cotton/polyester blend, and it’s soft and cool to sleep on (although none of our picks overheated us at night). Its thin layer of polyester fill makes it softer and less flimsy than some of the fitted protectors we tried.

The Priva was comfortable to sleep on, but it did bunch a little in the night. Not so much that it moved away from the body, making the mattress vulnerable, but just enough that we woke up with a slight lump under our back. (This was also an issue with the Linenspa pad.) The Priva comes in three sizes: 18 by 22 inches, 24 by 34 inches, and 34 by 52 inches. We tested the largest size, which provides sufficient coverage under an adult body.

We haven’t tested Priva’s claim that this pad can survive 300 washes and hold up to 8 cups of liquid, but we do think it can handle the output from an average adult bladder ( about 2 cups ), and after 10 washes it showed no sign of leaking—which was better than the other pads we tried. We like that it’s portable, easy to wash, and less wasteful than disposable pads. Fiberlinks, the manufacturer of Priva, told us that no phthalates are used in the production of the vinyl for this pad, but because we couldn’t verify current third-party testing to confirm that at the time of this writing we recommend the Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector for kids and pregnant women.

The Linenspa Waterproof Sheet Protector did not perform as well as the Priva pad in our tests, but we think it’s a safer option for kids and pregnant women because it’s backed with polyurethane. It also costs a little less. The Linenspa protector remained completely dry after our first leak tests, but after our second leak test the protector’s back and the paper towels underneath felt ever-so-slightly damp. It didn’t fail completely, but we don’t think it will last as long as the Priva. Some online reviewers note that the protector has worked for six months with daily laundering, and for more than a year with weekly washing. It’s inexpensive to replace, and we like a pad protector for kids because you can change it without removing all their bedding. It’s also convenient for travel, and it’s great for sick days when you want to protect a couch or a bed.

The Linenspa also comes in three sizes: 34 by 36 inches, 34 by 52 inches (the size we tested), and 44 by 52 inches. If you’re an adult looking for a mattress pad and want something roomier than the Priva, the Linenspa’s largest size may be a good option. We think that extra coverage works for a crib, toddler, or twin bed, especially if your kids tend to travel the mattress at night.

The Linenspa’s soft top is a cotton/polyester blend with a layer of synthetic fill. It was very comfortable to sleep on, but like the Priva it can bunch at night. Both pads we recommend shift around more than our fitted-sheet-style picks. The Linenspa is softer than the Priva and the SafeRest, and on the bed we didn’t hear any rustling at all, so we don’t think it will interfere with sleep. The Linenspa does not come with a warranty.

Following the care instructions on your mattress protector’s label is key to prolonging its life and preventing the waterproof backing from failing. For our top-pick protector, the SafeRest, the label says to wash it on warm (95 degrees Fahrenheit) or hot (200 ºF), but it can be sanitized up to 212 ºF. We recommend washing it that hot only if you actually need to sanitize it, not for everyday use and wear. The instructions for every protector we tested said to tumble dry on low, and we read several user reviews from people who prefer to air dry it to help it last longer.

Mattress protectors don’t need to be washed as frequently as sheets, especially if you put them under your sheets. Harrison King, of American Textile Company, told us that if you don’t have leaks or spills on your bed, you need to wash a protector only three to four times a year.

Fitted protectors

The Weekender Hotel-Grade 5-sided Mattress Protector has a smooth, T-shirt-like jersey surface instead of the terry used for several protectors we considered, and among fitted protectors, it came in third after our main and upgrade picks, leaving the paper towels underneath just slightly damp after our leak tests.

The Luna Premium Mattress Protector was completely dry on the back after our first leak test, but on the second, the waterproofing failed and soaked the paper towels underneath.

Malouf’s Sleep Tite Prime Mattress Protector was a staff recommendation. In the first leak test it failed in one spot, leaving a small (about 1 inch in diameter) wet spot on the paper towel barrier underneath.

The Casper Mattress Protector shrunk significantly—just over 10 percent, more than any other model we tested—after washing and drying, which could make fit an issue. Also, in our first leak test it left the paper towel barrier damp.

The Weekender Jersey Mattress Protector stretched out in the wash, enough that it would fit poorly on a mattress, and it was also damp (but not soaking) after our first leak test.

NaturePedic’s Organic Waterproof Fitted Protector Pad is made without any vinyl or polyurethane, the most common waterproof materials we found. After our first leak test the bottom felt wet and the paper towels were damp.

The Malouf Sleep Tite 5-Sided Mattress Protector failed completely in our first leak test, soaking the paper towels underneath.

Sealy’s Luxury Knit Waterproof Waterproof Stain-Release Mattress Protector also completely soaked the paper towels underneath during the first leak test.

We considered but didn’t test the Lucid Mattress Protector , PureCare StainGuard Waterproof Mattress Protector , and Lucid Rayon from Bamboo Jersey Mattress Protector because the reviews were mixed, or they had too few reviews.

Liquid soaked through the Royal Heritage Home Saddle Style Waterproof Mattress Protector and the paper towels under it in our first leak test.

Encasements

The Allearease Zippered Mattress Protector is the only encasement we tested for this guide, and it left a 6-inch wet spot on the paper towels during the first leak test.

How’s this for an alternative to endless loads of washing? These bed pads aren’t usually marketed to parents, which rather annoyingly means they’re a hell of a lot more affordable. 

The pad goes on top of your child’s sheet, positioned roughly where their bum will be while they’re sleeping, and the pad catches any accidents, wicking moisture away and protecting the sheet and mattress. Needless to say, if your child’s a bit of a wriggler, these might not work so well.

• Encased mattress protectors. These are a lot less common and encase the entire mattress, fastening with a zip. They protect not only the top and sides but the bottom of your mattress, too. This is great if you want to protect against bed bugs or dust mites, but they are trickier to fit and more expensive.
• Mattress protectors with elastic straps. These are the most affordable and offer the least amount of protection. The protector only covers the top of the mattress, leaving the sides bare; it's fastened with elastic straps to each corner.

Besides the type of mattress protector, there are a few other features to consider.

• The fabric. You'll most commonly have the choice of a cotton, synthetic or wool mattress protector. Cotton is breathable and can be purchased as hypoallergenic, while synthetic is the most affordable (yet least durable) and wool is biodegrade-able, warm in winter and actually quite supportive.

Mattresses don’t come cheap. While everyone’s first priority is to find one that’s supportive, comfortable and durable, it’s just as important to keep that mattress in the best possible condition once it’s on your bed . They do cost a small fortune after all.

The best mattress protectors will help prolong the life of your mattress , guarding it against spills, sweat, dust mites and allergens. Some can even help regulate body temperature or provide added comfort – although, you’ll need a mattress topper if you’re really looking for extra support and cosiness.

Before buying, you’ll need to decide what material you’d like your protector to be made out of. Synthetic materials such as polyester will be the most affordable but a mattress protector made of cotton is likely to be better quality and more breathable if you tend to overheat at night. There are now also more eco-friendly materials available, such as bamboo and Tencel.

Check carefully if the mattress protector is waterproof, too, as not all are. If you intend to use one on a child’s bed or want to cuddle up with your dog at night, it’s a good idea to choose a waterproof version. How we tested the best mattress protectors

We tested all these mattress protectors in our own home, to check for fit, comfort and that all-important rustle factor that often comes with waterproof versions. We checked to make sure each protector didn’t move during the night, and whether or not it helped to keep us cool. We even poured water on every mattress protector, to test just how waterproof they were. Finally, we washed and dried each protector according to the manufacturer’s instructions, to see how easily and quickly each one could be cleaned. Unless stated otherwise, prices included for every protector are for double-size versions.

This mattress protector ticks pretty much every box – and all for a great price. The top layer is made from fabric-of-the-moment Tencel, which is more environmentally friendly than cotton, and more breathable, so you won’t overheat while you sleep. It feels silky soft to the touch, and we really did find it cooling in bed.

It’s completely silent if you move during your sleep, too, despite the fact a PU layer makes it completely waterproof – it passed our glass of water test. It’s nicely stretchy, so fits well on the mattress and doesn’t bunch up at the corners.

Tencel is naturally hypoallergenic, and the protector can be washed up to 90C, making it perfect for anyone who suffers from allergies. The one drawback is it can’t be tumble dried, so we’d consider buying two, so you can keep one on the bed while the other is drying, to make sure your mattress remains in tip-top condition.

Staydrynights terry towelling waterproof mattress protector

Terry towelling is the ultimate waterproof fabric, so it’s no surprise this mattress protector can handle anything you can throw at it (or drop on it). It’s the ideal choice for anyone with pets or children, or anyone who is particularly accident-prone with their morning cuppa.

It’s also far softer than we expected – we couldn’t feel it at all under our sheet. Plus, it doesn’t rustle when you move, and we found that the wide skirt held it in place well.

Don’t worry if you do spill something on it, either, as it was one of the easiest protectors to wash. Be warned though, it can’t be tumble-dried afterwards.

The White Company temperature balance quilted mattress protector

• Clever temperature control
• Takes a long time to dry

If you’ve assumed mattress protectors are glorified but functional sheets to chuck on and forget about, think again. This luxurious version from The White Company is quilted, so really did make our bed feel more comfortable and certainly meant there was no need for an additional topper. The wide skirt made it easy to fit, even on our deep mattress, and it didn’t budge an inch during the night, plus it’s waterproof but completely silent, however much you move in your sleep.

It’s also made with advanced technology developed by Nasa no less. The 100 per cent cotton fabric stores excess heat until the body’s temperature decreases, then slowly releases that heat to keep the body at a consistent temperature through the night. All we know is we’ve never had a more cosy or comfortable night’s sleep, without feeling too toasty. The only drawback is the protector’s thickness means it takes forever to tumble dry, so speedy bed changes are a definite no-go.

Emma mattress protector

• Protects against dust mites

• On the thinner side

It’s no surprise the company behind the much-praised Emma mattresses also sells a top-notch protector. Though it is, of course, compatible with Emma mattresses, it should still fit on all other brands, though double check first, as the protector is not quite as deep as some others we tested.

Unlike some others, though, the skirt has a stretchy elastic band around the edge, so doesn’t budge at all once it’s on the bed. The tight grip means there’s no chance of it crinkling when you turn over, and it’s waterproof right to the very edge, which we loved.

Emma says its revolutionary AllergyShield technology also reduces up to 93.7 per cent of mites plus it dried quickly after washing, making it perfectly suited to those with allergies who want to wash their protector more often. Just be aware it is much thinner than some protectors, so you may still want to add a topper for extra comfort.

Don’t even think about tucking your child up in bed without making sure there’s a mattress protector in place first. There’s no telling what it might need to fend off during the night, so a waterproof protector is essential to make sure the mattress lasts as long as possible.

Getting sweaty while you sleep is no fun, so, if you tend to overheat at night (or share a bed with someone who does), this protector is a great option. It’s made of breathable 200-thread count pure cotton with a pure cotton fill to wick away perspiration. It’s also considerably cheaper than most other pure cotton protectors, and we liked the fact there were two depths to choose from, to ensure the best fit for every mattress.

It feels lovely to the touch, too, with a flat profile but a smooth, lightly quilted finish and an elasticated jersey skirt. Surprisingly, it doesn’t take too long to dry after washing, either.

The only downside is that while it does offer light protection against minor spills, it’s not completely waterproof. So, if you just can’t do without a morning cuppa in bed, you’d be better off choosing something else.

How we test mattress protectors

At the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, we extensively test all types of bedding, including comforters , sheets , pillows , mattress toppers , mattress protectors and more to help you achieve a great night's sleep. In recent years, we've tested over 15 mattress protectors, analyzing them for performance and durability properties and collecting over 200 data points for analysis in the process. Here are a few characteristics that we consider during our evaluations:

✔️ Waterproof abilities: To ensure the mattress protectors hold up to any waterproof claims, we conducted spill test simulations in our Lab. We lined a tray with absorbent blotting paper, weighed the tray for later comparison, then covered the tray with a mattress protector. Next, we poured a set amount of distilled water onto the material (pictured here). After waiting a set amount of time, we removed the mattress protector and weighed the tray again to determine how much water soaked through the mattress protector and into the blotting paper below. The greater the difference in weight, the less waterproof the mattress protector proved to be.

✔️ Washability: We also put each mattress protector through repeated wash testing to determine how well the protectors withstood regular laundering, noting any shrinkage or major changes in appearance.

✔️ Noise level: Some mattress protectors are made with materials, coatings or backings that create noticeable noise when rustled, which can be disruptive. To determine the noise level, we crinkled the material of each mattress protector and rated the sound produced.

✔️ Consumer tests: Our consumer testers try out the mattress protectors on their own beds, providing us with feedback about the ease of assembly and mattress fit, overall comfort, their ratings for noise level and more.

What to look for when shopping for a mattress protector

When shopping for a new mattress protector for your bed, consider:

✔️ Material: M attress protectors can be made with either natural or synthetic materials or a combination of both. Each material possesses different properties that impact overall performance and comfort:

• Polyurethane: This material gives most waterproof mattress protectors their waterproof abilities. The plastic material acts as a moisture barrier, which is great for spills and messes, but it can be uncomfortable and noisy on its own.
• Cotton: You'll often find cotton protectors with waterproof linings to add a layer of protection while still remaining comfortable to sleep on. It’s a great option for someone who wants a softer, more natural feel on their bed.

However, it is easier to take on and off, so it's a great pick for easy cleanup from incontinence or frequent spills.
• Encasement protectors: Complete with a bottom panel, encasement protectors cover the entire mattress and typically feature a zipper closure to keep them securely fitted. They provide greater protection than five-sided models and can help guard against bed bugs, but they're more difficult to remove during accidents for cleaning.

Not all mattress protectors are waterproof, but you should make sure that your little one's is.

The Lullaby Trust recommends a waterproof cover, or in other words a mattress protector, as it will keep your baby's mattress clean and dry, and prevent bacteria from collecting in the foam. The Rostov Academic Drama Theatre

A mock-up of the Rostov Academic Drama Theatre (Ru) represents Russia in the London Museum of the History of Architecture alongside a mock-up of St Basil's Cathedral . It was built in 1935, blown up by the fascists in 1943 and restored in 1963. Its unusual and monumental shape resembles a tractor.

Don River Embankment

This lovely pedestrian zone of about 3 kilometres is a favourite place for walking and cheerful festivities of all citizens. Along the Don Embankment , you will find statues of legends from the history of Donland, as well as restaurants and cafés. Astor Center (Mall)

Frunze Park

The history of this market goes back to the late 19th century, when an Armenian settlement appeared near the Rostov fortress. The Nakhichevan Bazar offers very tasty and fresh food, based on traditional Armenian markets. At times you may also hear the sounds of a duduk here.

The House of Margarita Chernova is a lovely and richly decorated mansion that was built in 1899 as a gift to the actress Margarita Chernova from her admirer, merchant Paramonov. Professor's House

Until the appearance of the Professor's House here in 1937, there was a church on this site. During the Soviet era, a constructivist apartment building was built for the professors of the university and the medical institute. That explains the name. Regional Council House and Watch Factory

The construction of the Council House , which would unite all governmental organizations, began in 1931 and was supposed to be in neoclassical style. Because of the war and a lack of funding, construction was finished by the early 60s. The style was completely changed into constructivism due to a specific decree (Ru). Get directions .

Greek Orthodox Church

The Greek Church was built in 2014 in a Neo-Byzantine style located close to the place of the former church, which was closed in 1959 and rebuilt into a puppet theatre in 1964. The church is the centre of the spiritual life of the Greek Diaspora of Rostov. Get directions .

Gorky Park is the oldest park of the city, founded in 1813. Ever since those days, it has been an important place for celebrations and festivities. Academic Youth Theatre

This theatre building from 1899 shows a mixture of styles, including Baroque, Renaissance and Classicism. Central mall TSUM

Komsomolsky Park (Ru) is a small and quiet area with tall deciduous trees, a popular place for people with children due to a nice children's town with a trampoline and slides. You can also find here many benches in the shade of maples along the alleys, and a nice café. Get directions .

House of the merchant Gench-Ogluyev

The Gench-Ogluyev House was the first multi-story apartment house in Rostov-on-Don, built in 1883 by the architect Pomerantsev for the merchant Gench-Ogluyev. Monument to the Strike of 1902

In 1902 railroad workers went on a strike (Ru), demanding a reduction of the working day and an increase in wage. After clashes with the police, several workers were killed. This impressive monument symbolizes the workers with a flag of revolution. Get directions .

The First of May Park

The 1st of May Park is situated on the territory of the former fortress. The main highlight of the park is a rotunda in neoclassical style, built in 1901. In about the same period, a linden alley was planted here – beautiful and very useful for escaping the summer heat. Get directions .

Museum of Fine Arts, Pushkinskaya

The Museum of Fine Arts is situated in a graceful mansion behind an openwork fence that was built in 1898. This branch of the museum houses a permanent exposition dedicated to Russian art, a place to find art of Bryullov , Repin , Kramskoy , Surikov , Aivazovsky and Levitan .

Museum of Russian-Armenian Friendship

From 1972 to 2007, the Museum of Russian-Armenian Friendship (Ru) was located in the Surp Khach monastery. Nowadays it is housed in this late 19th century mansion. The museum covers the migration of Armenians from Crimea, and treasures a collection of over 30,000 exhibits, such as household items and Armenian books from the 18th century.

Ostrovsky Park

With a territory of 63 ha, Ostrovsky Park is the biggest public park in Rostov. The park with cafés and beautiful century-old trees, includes various sports- and playgrounds, a children's railway, and unique Soviet amusement rides. Get directions .

Rostov Arena

The Rostov Arena was constructed especially for the 2018 World Cup, on the left bank of the Don River. After the World Cup it became the new home ground of FC Rostov . The stadium provides seats for 45,000 spectators. Get directions .

Marins Hotel (Former 'Hotel Rostov')

The former Hotel Rostov was one of the biggest hotels in the USSR, built in 1934. It was the last renovated building in Rostov-on-Don after the war. Museum of Fine Arts, Chekhova

This branch of the Museum of Fine Arts is dedicated to West-European art. The collection reflects the main art developments of the 17-19th centuries. You can enjoy here all the major European schools of that time: Italian, Dutch, Flemish, French and German.

Pushkinskaya Street

Pushkinskaya is the main pedestrian street of the city, a boulevard with tall trees that is very popular during the hot summers. The street contains many historical buildings from since the 1870s, monuments, museums, cozy cafés and comfortable benches. Get directions .

The State Bank Building

The magnificent State Bank Building was constructed in 1915 in neoclassicism style . Its big green dome can be noticed from afar. Builder's Park

Museum of Local Lore

The Museum of Local Lore (Ru) opened its doors early 20th century, and despite the fact that it was looted by the Nazis during the occupation, it still treasures an excellent collection of Scythian gold and an exhibition about the history of the Don Cossacks – the most numerous of the Cossack troops in the Russian Empire.

Palace of Culture of Railway Workers / Lendvorets

Lendvorets (Ru) was the first building in Rostov built in the style of constructivism in 1927. During WWII it was partially destroyed, and after its restoration in 1957, the main entrance received a giant portal with a colonnade in the style of Stalin’s classicism . Get directions .

The First Pioneer Gathering square

This small park is a popular resting place for locals living in the nearby high-rise buildings. One of the highlights of the First Pioneer Gathering square (Ru) is the fountain 'The Knight killing the Snake', to be found near hotel Rostov. North Caucasus Railway Administration

This magnificent building of the North Caucasus Railway was built in 1913 in Art Nouveau style, with elements of Eclecticism . The building has always been home to the railroad management. Get directions .

The Public Library

The history of the Donland Public library originated in 1886. The library has been housed in various places before this huge and particular building appeared in 1994. This cultural centre hosts film festivals, exhibitions and lectures. It’s also pleasant to sit in front of the library while resting and reading a book.

Vitya Cherevichkin Children's Park

Historically the Vitya Cherevichkin Children’s Park was named after Alexander II, containing an 11-meters copy of the Alexander Column , installed here in 1894. Since 1965, the park with its wide alleys and tall trees is named after Vitya Cherevichkin, a Rostov teenager who got killed by the German invaders. Get directions .

St Alexandra's Church

St Alexandra’s Church is dedicated to the Holy Queen Alexandra . It was built in 1904 in Russian Revival style, located in the Nakhichevan-on-Don area. It had not been closed in Soviet times, for its location on a cemetery. Get directions .

The Southern Federal University

The Southern Federal University was founded in 1915 as a satellite university of the University of Warsaw. The Russian staff needed to be evacuated from Poland in 1915, as a result of WWI. Today the university is one of the biggest educational institutions in the southern region of Russia. Get directions .

The Musical Theatre

Before the revolution, it was mostly visiting theatre troupes performing in the Rostov Musical Theatre . It received its official name and status in 1919, to become the oldest centre of musical life in the south of Russia. Its repertoire includes operas, ballets, operettas and symphonic music.

The Botanical Garden

The 90-years-old Botanical Garden is an island of pure nature. Guided tours are offered, as well as horse riding. In addition, there's a mineral spring, which is considered an Orthodox shrine.

Makaronka is a contemporary art center uniting an experimental theatre of modern drama called 'Theatre 18+', an exhibition space, artist's studios, a bookstore and a souvenir shop. Residential block for Skilled Professionals

Housing construction for the working class took place on a large scale in the time of Stalin's five-year plans . Budennovsky Prospect was one of these examples, and is very rich in constructivist architecture. Get directions .

Memorial complex Zmievskaya Balka

Zmievskaya Balka is a memorial on the place where 30,000 people (mostly Jews) were massacred on 11 and 12 August in 1942. Historians consider this to be the place of the largest mass extermination of Jews in Russia. Get directions .

Megamag (Mall)

One of the newer malls in Rostov-on-Don, still developing, but with a good number of clothes stores of mostly local brands. The mall already offers stores in nearly all categories, including cosmetics and electronics, and a hypermarket for instance.

Pleven Park

Pleven Park is located in the middle of a residential area. It's an excellent place for walks. Besides the many benches, the park offers an amusement park and some cafés. In summer season, you can also rent a bicycle here. The park was named after Pleven , the Bulgarian twin city of Rostov. Get directions .

Atlantes Fountain

The Atlantes Fountain from 1936 was designed by a young Yevgeny Vuchetich , who later became famous for his works The Motherland Calls! in Volgograd and the Swords to Ploughshares in the United Nations Art Collection. According to the legend, Vuchetich gave the animals' faces features of his contemporaries – city officials. Get directions .

The Synagogue

The only Synagogue of Rostov was built in 1872. The building was severely damaged by a fire during the Anti-Jewish pogroms of 1905 . After 1935 it got closed for a long time, in line with Soviet rules. Only in 1991 it was returned to the Jewish community. Get directions .

Water-transport Workers House

During the Soviet period, many buildings in the city were constructed for workers of different professions, such as this one. The characteristic features of these buildings are the simplicity of the artistic solution of the facades, combined with monumentality.
