Providing Exeptional Care

We are a multi-generational family that has dedicated our lives to elephants in human care for the past fifty years. Since 1980 we have been providing elephant, camel rides, and educational programs at renaissance festivals throughout the United States. We have participated in breeding programs and studies to help better elephants in human care.

Meet the Family

Paige was brought to the United States in the mid-eighties as an orphan. After her parents were poached for ivory. She has been part of our Family since 1996. She is the tallest of the three standing nine feet tall at the shoulder and her weight is about 8,600 lbs. Paige kept cracking the end of her tusks while out debarking trees and digging for roots. We fitted her with stainless steel caps to prevent anymore cracking and encourage healthy tusk growth.

Krissy was also brought to the United States as an orphan in the mid-eighties. She has been part of our family since 1997. She is the smallest of the three standing 7 foot 10 inches at the shoulder and her weight is 7,800 lbs. She was born without tusks.

Jeanie, same as Paige and Krissy was also imported in the late eighties as an orphan after her parents were poached for ivory and has been part of our family since 1999. Jeanie is our heaviest elephant weighing 9,500 lbs. and stands 8 foot 10 inches at the shoulder. Jeanie is the most playful of the three and loves to eat. She broke her right tusk close to the sulcus (upper lip) while digging. Just like we did with Paige, we fitted her with a set of stainless-steel caps to prevent cracking, breaking and encourage healthy tusk growth.

Our Furry Friends

Earl Jack, the larger of our two Dromedary Camels, stands close to 7’ at the shoulder and weighs in at over 2,200 lbs.

Also a Dromedary Camel, Abu stands over 6’ at the shoulder and weighs in at roughly 1,600 lbs.

MR. Z is a Grants Zebra has been part of our family since he was two weeks old. He enjoys spending time with the camels in the pasture.

Our pygmy goats love to play and be social, they are known for being friendly and curious creatures.

The highlight of our trip! They’ve earned my trust!

I bought tickets for my teenagers to go with my elderly mom and dad who both have mobility issues. When booking tickets, I called two times asking questions and they gave me total confidence that elephants and treated well. They offered to have the owners speak with me if I had any other questions which I appreciated but did not feel I needed to take them up on it. My mom had no issues getting around despite her mobility issues, and they assured me she would be well taken care of, and I knew she was in good hands. My teenagers and both of my parents had a blast, and it was a highlight of our trip to Fredericksburg!

Glad I went! After reading some reviews, I was concerned. This was an amazing experience. The elephants appear to be treated very well and they limit their exposure. There was a brief demonstration of what they can do, but it wasn't circus like in my opinion. The grounds are beautiful. You have the opportunity to learn about elephants and they are truly amazing and intelligent.

elephant tour texas

This was a one-of-a-kind, amazing experience! We learned so much about Asian elephants, and it was such an honor to be able to see these beautiful creatures up close. Rosie, Becky, and Kitty (the "girls") were so majestic, and it is very evident that the staff who work with and care for these animals truly love, admire, and respect them. The staff were warm and friendly and made their presentations exciting and informative. They kept the audience invested by alternating between education and hands-on involvement, and they made us feel like we were truly part of the process to save the Asian elephants. From my 8-year old children to my 80-year old parents, we all left the Preserve feeling enlightened and inspired.

elephant tour texas

I am in awe how this place this has not been shut down. The make the animals done circus stunts and all workers carry bullhooks. Bullhooks physically harm elephants. Bullhooks resemble a fireplace poker and inflict physical injury and emotional distress on elephants. An elephant's skin ranges in thickness from one inch across the back and hindquarters, to paper-thin around the eyes and mouth, inside the ears, and at the anus. And these are precisely the same locations elephant handlers apply the bullhooks. This is NOT a non-profit organization NOR a sanctuary. It is a circus disguised as a preserve. The Preserve has supplied elephants for circuses, rides, parties, film and advertising. There are plenty of videos and pictures online that demonstrates HTWT trainers -including one of the owners- videotaped viciously jabbing, hooking, and striking elephants with a bullhook. Scenes include trainers hooking a baby elephant in the mouth, forcefully striking an elephant when she had difficulty raising a leg up onto a stool, and shocking an elephant with a "hot shot." In a letter to Congress, HTWT even defended the use of electric shocking devices on elephants. Tai, Dixie, Kitty, Rosie and Becky - who were all captured from the wild in the 1960s and 1980s -are forced to perform. Tai and Dixie were two of five Asian elephants — along with Kitty, Rosie, and Becky — all captured from the wild, residing at The Preserve, an animal facility operated by a business called Have Trunk Will Travel aka HTWT. Both Tai and Dixie died in the past year from "kidney failure". They charge $125 per person for the opportunity to bathe elephants and snap selfies while the elephants are forced to stand on their hind legs and other unnatural positions, These girls have been through enough. Please spread the word and urge anyone thinking of visiting The Preserve to avoid, avoid, AVOID. Please shut down this place. One thing to look for is an accreditation by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), which provides certification that animal sanctuaries are following the rules; the Preserve has no GFAS accreditation.

elephant tour texas

Shameful this place calls itself a sanctuary when barbaric tools are still being used on these animals. Bull hooks can be seen in the trainers hands in several different photos. Do better if you want to live up to the name you have given yourselves.

They had to leave California because of their practices with the elephants. They use hooks and badger the elephants when training. They lost two of the 5 elephants they brought from CA. Horrible. No preserve. What I saw were beaten down elephants. Closed eyes, no connection with people. Horrible! Should be outlawed.

We loved this experience! We went for my son's second birthday, and weren't exactly sure what to expect. We were able to interact with the elephants, including feeding them, bathing them, and taking a lot of pictures with them! I loved the education they provided about the elephants, including where they're from and what it consists of to care for them. These are beautiful creatures and you can tell they are well-cared for! We would highly recommend this!

One of the most amazing experiences I've ever had. The staff was incredibly kind and knowledgeable. The animals are beautiful, friendly and well cared for. I cannot say enough about this experience.

Team was super informative and friendly. Animals were an absolute treat to see and is well worth the money to visit with friends, family, or even by yourself. You must go here and experience this once in a lifetime opportunity!!

This was the most amazing place! Our encounter was absolutely magical and brought me to tears. I learned all about African elephants and their care. They are these brilliant beautiful creatures that have so much personality. In the wild they would face so many terrifying things like poaching and lack of food. Their family has devoted their entire life to the care and well being of their animals. Some would say they are even SPOILED! All the animals are very healthy with a team of care takers and veterinary medical professionals. We had a great time, felt very comfortable outdoors, and learned a ton. I am so thankful for this experience and will definitely come back!

This was a fantastic experience and was well worth the price. We did not expect to be as hands on with the elephants as we were. We were able to feed, groom and pet the elephants! Its a great up close and personal experience with the elephants. The camels and baby goats were fun as well. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and give a great presentation. We can not wait to go back.

Tried contacting and nothing. Left message and nothing. Emailed and was told that she was out for maternity leave. I asked if it was completely shut down due to maternity leave and no response.

Our trip to East Texas Elephant Experience was nothing short of unbelievable. The owners and employees are personable and knowledgable and the animals are very well cared for. The owner has literally grown up with these 3 girls and they are definitely part of his family. I've seen elephants in the wild, but from a distance, of course. But to have 3 of these beautiful creatures walk up and stand four feet away from you, almost moved me to tears. My 12 year old daughter LOVES elephants and this trip was her surprise bday gift. I don't think there could've been a happier girl in the world. To not only see them so close but to interact with them, feed them, brush them, touch them....indescribable. It was worth every penny and I know we will be returning!

This place has made my dreams come true! Being able to come in contact with majestic African elephants almost brought me to tears. These 3 beautiful girls are very obviously loved by their caregivers. I will Definitely be back!!

Elephant Sanctuary Texas: Two Unique Experiences

Note: This post may contain affiliate links! Check our disclaimer if you need more info!

elephant tour texas

This is a guide with everything you need to know about elephant sanctuary Texas.

There are so many reasons to love elephants. They’re tall, intelligent, loveable creatures with a certain air of majesty to them. Seeing some up and close and personal is on most people’s travel bucket list for that exact reason.

You may think you’d have to travel to Thailand in order to accomplish this but you’re in luck! There are elephant sanctuaries in Texas where you can be one with the animals!

Elephant Sanctuary Texas

Options for Visiting An Elephant Sanctuary Texas

When thinking of these beautiful creatures, elephant sanctuary Texas might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But turns out there are two elephant sanctuaries here in Texas that are open to the public.

East Texas Elephant Experience

The preserve in texas.

Please note that we don’t typically advertise or market animal tourism. But an elephant sanctuary Texas is a unique opportunity worth sharing with our readers.

Both are great options for an elephant sanctuary in Texas but let’s dive into the specifics of each.

Elephant Sanctuary in Texas

The Preserve in Texas is located in Fredericksburg, TX. This elephant sanctuary in Texas is about 80 miles west of Austin and 70 miles north of San Antonio and is owned by the Hill Country Elephant Preserve.

The non-profit organization’s mission is “To preserve all animals by building awareness through contact and education in partnership with our animal ambassadors.”  Who are those animal ambassadors?  Five beautiful Asian elephants who would otherwise be without a home.  Sadly, only 35,000 Asian elephants are left in the wild which makes the Preserve’s mission ever important.

The Preserve in Texas: What Is the Experience Like?

Each experience at The Preserve in Texas is approximately 1.5 hours. You’ll help give the elephants a bath and a pedicure during your visit. It is a hands-on experience that furthers their mission of “Contact cultivates caring which encourages conservation.”  You’ll also learn more about these beautiful animals and gain a better idea of why the Preserve’s mission is so great and why this elephant sanctuary in Texas is worthwhile.

The Preserve in Texas: How Much Does It Cost?

Admission to The Preserve in Fredericksburg is extremely limited and requires a ticket.  Spots fill up fast and you might have to get your ticket a month [or more] in advance.   Visiting this elephant sanctuary in Texas does not come cheap; prices seem to fluctuate so please check their website for up to date pricing.

Elephant Sanctuary Texas

Get more information and book your ticket at  The Preserve’s website .

The East Texas Elephant Experience is another elephant sanctuary Texas option. It is located near Conroe, TX close to Houston, and has been a family-owned business since 1980. Proceeds from their services are donated to non-profits worldwide to help further the conservation of the elephant population.

They are the only elephant sanctuary in Texas that features African elephants. Their crew is made up of three female elephants that have been in their family since the 1990s. But it doesn’t stop there! This elephant sanctuary Texas also has other furry friends like camels and a zebra.

The East Texas Elephant Experience visit lasts 1.5 hours and is both entertaining and educational. Not only will you get the chance to have a personal encounter with the elephants but you will also learn about their care and the challenges their population is facing in Africa.

The East Texas Elephant Experience: How Much Does it Cost?

Like most of these unique experiences, the price of this elephant sanctuary Texas can vary. They are also incredibly popular and events book up months in advance. Check their current pricing and availability on their website .

All ages are welcome to attend. In our experience, younger children most often do not have the attention span to stay engaged for 1 ½ hours and might enjoy it more when they are older. Every child is different but we notice that about 8 to 10 years old is a good age to really learn from and appreciate the animals. Children 14 years of age and over may visit The Preserve unaccompanied at parent or guardians discretion. Guests 13 years of age and younger must be accompanied by an older guest.

An Elephant Experience in Texas

I followed Google maps down a winding country road deep in the Texas Hill Country to what initially looked like a well-manicured private ranch where urban Texans might escape to on weekends to tend Longhorn cattle. I joined about 20 other people—masks on and socially distanced—beneath a large metal canopy on the 57-acre preserve. In the distance, horses and goats grazed in pastures surrounded by rolling hills, shallow ponds, and stands of tall shade trees.

Five gregarious elephants

Promptly at 2 p.m., five female Asian elephants–linked trunk-to-tail–lumbered up to the canopy. They bowed in unison as a staff member introduced them by name as “the five smartest, most beautiful elephants in the entire world.”

During the next 90 minutes, Tai, Dixie, Kitty, Rosie, and Becky showed off their many talents while we learned that the elephant population in Asia has dwindled to just 35,000 due to poaching, abuse, and loss of habitat.

Supported by a nonprofit foundation, the preserve works with international preservation groups to ensure the survival of the species, staff member Sevannah Stewart told me afterward. “The elephants receive extraordinary care here,” she said. “We create once-in-a-lifetime educational experiences with the elephants for people, including schools and military groups.”
