Schedule, venues confirmed for England WTC25 tour of New Zealand
New Zealand Cricket have announced dates and locations for the England Test series, beginning in late November.
Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the Basin Reserve in Wellington, and Seddon Park in Hamilton will host New Zealand's three Tests, all part of the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test Championship.
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink says the early announcement of England's Test tour comes after a surge in popularity in the long format, where seven of the eight days of the two Tests against Australia earlier this year were sold out.
“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” he said.
“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers.
“We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.”
Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.
World Test Championship standings
Both Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, alongside the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer.
The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later in the year.

This is one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions, where Pinot Noir and Riesling grapes thrive. Stop for lunch at a local winery for wine tasting and a leisurely lunch before climbing the Hundalee ranges and following the Pacific Ocean coastline to the township of Kaikoura. The sea here is particularly rich in nutrients, attracting a wide variety of sea life. Sperm whales, the largest of all toothed whales, can be seen off this coast for 95% of the year.
Accommodation: Sudima Hotel Kaikoura Superior Room – 2 nights
Wednesday 04 Dec – KAIKOURA
Today, take a Whale Watch experience on a modern purpose-built catamaran for an exciting close-up encounter with the Giant Sperm Whale in their natural environment. The upwelling of nutrient-rich waters around Kaikoura supports an abundant and diverse fauna of vertebrates, fish, and marine mammals. At times, you may also see Dusky Dolphins and the rare Hector Dolphins, NZ fur seals, sea lions, and a large variety of seabirds, including the smallest of the penguins, the little Blue Penguin.
The remainder of the day is at leisure in Kaikoura. You may like to explore the small township or, for the more active, walk unguided on the Peninsula Walkway. The walkway juts from the rugged east coast of the South Island, with a backdrop of steep mountains, snow-capped in winter. An impressive collection of information panels along the walkway explains the rich history, geology, animals, and plants that make the area so special.
Thursday 05 Dec – KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON
Travelling north, the road follows the rugged coastline, affording spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean before turning inland through the Marlborough wine region that surrounds the town of Blenheim. Continue north a short distance through a delightful valley to the bustling port town of Picton, located at the head of picturesque Queen Charlotte Sound. In the mid-afternoon, depart Picton onboard the Interislander Ferry and cross Cook Strait to Wellington. The 92km voyage takes approximately three and a half hours and has been described as “one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world.” The first part of the cruise through the magnificent Marlborough Sounds is especially scenic.
Arrive in Wellington and transfer to your hotel for an evening at leisure.

What it’s like travelling to New Zealand with Elite Sports Travel
“Travelled to New Zealand on 12th Feb for the two test series. For me I was doing the South Island tour after the tests finished. The organisation and guidance we received throughout was first class. Everything worked like clockwork. We were unable to visit Napier because of the cyclone. Elite quickly added another great activity. All the activities were of a high standard and worth doing. Hotels and transport connections outstanding. I would recommend Elite Sports Travel whole heartedly. Brilliant.”

England set for New Zealand tour in 2024
Steve Borthwick’s first tour as England head coach is set to be a box-office series against the All Blacks in 2024, a decade on from the national team’s previous trip to New Zealand.
There will be no summer tour in 2023, with Borthwick instead having the Six Nations and four warm-up matches on these shores for the World Cup, which starts in September, before England fly out to face the All Blacks the following year.
Wales are due to face Australia, Ireland are primed to go to South Africa and Scotland are set for Tests in the Pacific Islands. It is also understood that the plan is for France to visit Argentina and for Italy to play the United States and Canada.
England have not played in New Zealand since 2014, when Stuart Lancaster was the head coach and they lost the series 3-0. They have only faced the All Blacks three times in the past eight years.
Borthwick succeeded Eddie Jones — who never took his team to New Zealand in his seven years at the helm — this month, and has nine Tests before the start of the World Cup. Five of those come in the Six Nations, with four World Cup warm-ups against Wales (twice) Ireland and Fiji in August.
England have only toured New Zealand fully twice this century; the 2014 trip preceded by a two-Test series in 2008. England lost both those games.
Sir Clive Woodward’s all-conquering 2003 side did beat the All Blacks in Wellington in a one-off Test that year, before lifting the World Cup in Australia in November.
When this set of north-versus-south tours were pencilled in five years ago, at a global rugby summit in San Francisco, the original plan was for them to comprise only two Tests, to reduce player workload in the year after the World Cup, but that may be altered by 2024.
The full schedules for these trips have not been finalised, but it is believed there are options for teams to add in a third Test against an emerging nation to their tour programme.
For example, England could arrange an extra match against the likes of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa or the Maori All Blacks, if they wished to. Those games could provide Borthwick with a chance to analyse his strength in depth.
This summer, Ireland brought enough players to New Zealand to fill an “A” team and faced the Maori in a midweek match.
These match-ups between southern and northern hemisphere nations could be the last of the fully-fledged traditional tours, as the British & Irish Lions will go to Australia in 2025, and then the Nations Championship is set to begin in 2026. Global rugby executives are still thrashing out plans for a revamped calendar with the centerpiece a 24-team, two-division international league with a promotion and relegation and a grand final every two years.
If that comes in for 2026, as planned, it would involve teams playing multiple countries in July and November as part of a league table, rather than the present model where standalone cross-hemisphere series are played each summer.
The touring model is a lucrative one for the southern hemisphere countries. Sanzaar, their governing body, which includes representatives from South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and Argentina, signed a new multi-million pound broadcast deal with Sky Sports this March which will cover the summer tours and end with the 2025 Lions series in Australia.
Redpath and Spencer commit to Bath
Cameron Redpath and Ben Spencer will become the latest Bath players to commit to the club this week, following Sam Underhill, who has also signed a new deal (Will Kelleher writes).
Redpath, the 23-year-old Scotland centre, and Spencer, the 30-year-old English scrum half, will play either side of new recruit Finn Russell next season at The Recreation Ground as part of an exciting backline.
The pair have agreed extensions to their contacts at Bath, joining Ollie Lawrence, Alfie Barbeary, Josh Bayliss, Chris Cloete, Jaco Coetzee, Ted Hill and Miles Reid who have also agreed to stay.
While up to 20 players could leave Bath next summer, as the head of rugby Johann van Graan overhauls the under-achieving squad, the England flanker Underhill, 26, will be part of the rebuild. His fresh deal was announced by the club on Tuesday.
“I have learned an incredible amount over the past five years at Bath and I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing where I can take my game with the group of staff and players we have here,” Underhill said, having played his first match since July on Christmas Eve against Exeter Chiefs, on his return from shoulder surgery.
“I want to contribute to a successful Bath side, and I know everyone is pulling in the same direction to help the club achieve great things in the seasons to come.”
Van Graan added: “Sam has proved his quality at international and club level for a number of years.
“He is a leader, has fantastic defensive qualities and still has a great desire to develop his game. Sam complements the other back row players who will be with us next season and we are excited by the impact he will continue to have on the group.”

Black Caps announce 3 Test tour by England in Nov/Dec
Hagley Oval, the Cello Basin Reserve, and Seddon Park will host the BLACKCAPS’ three ICC World Championship Tests against England at the end of this year. Following what has been described as an extremely competitive venue allocation process, the Tests have been scheduled to be played in Christchurch from November 28-December 2, in Wellington from December 6-10, and in Hamilton from December 14-18. Strong demand for details from domestic and international fans prompted New Zealand Cricket to expedite decisions over the England Tests, with the remainder of the 2024-25 Home International Schedule to be announced later in the year. The Alternative Commentary Collective will have LIVE & FREE commentary of every ball on iHeartradio! The Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, and the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams will also be touring next summer. Interest in the England Test series follows sell-out crowds on seven of the eight days of the two Tests played against Australia earlier this year, as well as massive TVNZ audiences. NZC chief executive Scott Weenink described the growing interest in the Test format in New Zealand as “exciting”. “We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.” 1st Test Hagley Oval, Christchurch Thursday, 28 November – Monday, 2 December 2024 11:00am 2nd Test Cello Basin Reserve, Wellington Friday, 6 – Tuesday, 10 December 2024 11:00am 3rd Test Seddon Park, Hamilton Saturday, 14 – Wednesday, 18 December 2024 11:00am

England and New Zealand will meet on Saturday in what could prove a dress rehearsal for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup final.
More than 40,000 tickets have been sold for the first match to be staged at Twickenham since it was rebranded as part of a £100million deal with insurance giant Allianz.
Both countries will continue preparations ahead of the Canada-hosted WXV1 that starts on September 29 when England tackle the United States in Vancouver.
But September 27 next year is a potential date with destiny at Allianz Stadium for the Red Roses and Black Ferns.
It would prove a major surprise if they do not contest the World Cup final that day in south-west London, and this weekend provides an enticing appetiser.
“There is always an excitement around it, definitely,” England vice-captain Zoe Aldcroft said.
“It’s world champions against world number one, and you always want to get that extra edge.
“We know they have got elusive runners in their backs, and their forwards have big ball-carriers, so it is about stopping them early and shutting them down.”
England have beaten New Zealand in three of the last four meetings, but that one loss was the 2021 World Cup final at Auckland’s Eden Park.
The record on home soil is also impressive – eight wins, one draw and three defeats – and the Red Roses know that victory would underline their status as clear world number one nation.
Their WXV1 build-up began with a 38-19 success against France at Kingsholm, and head coach John Mitchell has made five changes following that first hit-out.
Centre Emily Scarratt will make her 100th start for England, replacing Helena Rowland, while Mitchell fields a new front-row of Mackenzie Carson, Lark Atkin-Davies and Sarah Bern, with lock Abbie Ward also starting.
Mitchell said: “We have chosen these two challenges (France and New Zealand) because we want to get experience and we want to get lessons to learn from.
“It is one thing being a winning side, which is good for you, but also when you win often you can sometimes take your eye off the ball in terms of not focusing on problems.
“We want problems, and that is the reason why we wanted to have that exposure in these two pre-season games to put us in good stead for WXV.
“It is obviously a big fixture, and a really good experience for us.”

'A hug, why not?': King Charles III enjoys group hug turned scrum with New Zealand rugby team
Posted: 11 September 2024 | Last updated: 11 September 2024
The King found himself at the centre of a hug that turned into a scrum as he hosted the New Zealand women’s rugby team at Buckingham Palace. The monarch, 75, who has been undergoing treatment for cancer, told the Black Ferns that he found the “warm hug” to be “very healing” as he delivered an off-the-cuff speech to the team ahead of their match against England’s Red Roses in Twickenham on Saturday. Addressing the players in the Bow Room at the Palace, the King said: “I much appreciate this chance to meet you and to have such a warm hug from you. Very healing.” Speaking about a recent decision not to include New Zealand in his travel plans when he visits Australia next month, the King said: “I’m extremely sorry I can’t come to New Zealand in later October – it’s on doctors’ orders. “But I hope there will be another excuse [to visit] before too long. In the meantime, give my love to New Zealand.” Read more here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2024/09/11/king-enjoys-very-healing-group-hug-new-zealand-womens-rugby/ #kingcharles #royalfamily #newzealand
